Reviews (page 7 of 9)

Rokk og ról. Ágætis plata, gæti rennt henni aftur.

A solid album. It wasn't even a foundational album for settling into the catchier, rougher sound they would be associated with later as it sounds more like a continuation from frontman Josh Homme's band Kyuss. The tune "Walkin on the Sidewalks" is very industrial-era Swans with its repetitive riffage to close the track. They would only improve from here.

I like the guitar jams more than the vocals and lyrics. I can't give it more than a 3

The first half is good, but the second half is pretty bland.

What a lifeless, emotionless, and stale rock album. Yes, some cool guitar riffs and a generally good production all around, but this just reminds me of how alt rock in the late 90s got heavier but provided nothing of value.

Not a bad album but overall just very average and uneventful, not much to say about this

I too like listening to bands that sound like Soundgarden that are not named Soundgarden. 2.5/5.

A solid alternative rock album that may have used more instrumental tracks than necessary. They do a nice job with the guitar riffs and the singer has a unique but familiar sound. Felt overall it was good and would revisit some of the songs. 6.6/10

QOTSA are what you get when you turn every knob on your amp up to 11. It's not got the consistency or clarity that some of their following albums have, but it's got some bangers, and you can hear the direction they're about to start moving in

Dad rock

Very conceptual stuff. A lot of the time I thought there was just experimental stuff for the sake of it.

Not as bad as I thought it was going to be. Not quite my vibe, but not far off. I wouldn't judge someone too harshly if they were into this.

Being a Stoner Rock and Desert Blues fan, QOTSA should have featured more strongly in my music rotation. They are a neat band, with some great tracks, but never really hold my attention.

I'd only ever heard one of Queens etc's later albums. This was much the same but maybe less bombastic. Some melodic and interesting rock but not something I'd come back to much.

Regular John - 2.5 stars Avon - 3 stars If Only - 4 stars Walkin on the Sidewalks - 2 stars You Would Know - 2 stars The Bronze - Bonus Track - 3 stars How to Handle a Rope (A Lesson in the Lariat) - 3.5 stars Mexicola - 2 stars Hispanic Impressions - 1.5 stars You Can't Quit Me Baby - 3.5 stars These Aren't the Droids You're Looking For - 1 star Give the Mule What He Wants - 3 stars Spiders and Vinegaroons - 2 stars I Was a Teenage Hand Model - 5 stars

This album is decent, I enjoyed some of the songs, but other songs are just kinda noise. But overall I like this album. Favorite song: If Only Worst song: I Was a Teenage Hand Model

I was hoping for this album. Liked: 01 Regular John 06 How to Handle a Rope 1. "Regular John" 2. "Avon" 3. "If Only" 4. "Walkin' on the Sidewalks" 5. "You Would Know" 6. "How to Handle a Rope" 7. "Mexicola" 8. "Hispanic Impressions" 9. "You Can't Quit Me Baby" 10. "Give the Mule What He Wants" 11. "I Was a Teenage Hand Model"

Fuzzy, sludgy, badassery that rocks hard. My only critique is that this could have been one or two songs shorter. Fave Songs: If Only, Regular John, Avon, You Would Know, How to Handle a Rope, Hispanic Impressions

Didn't listen this album before. Not my favorite, but it was ok.

Another good debut from a fantastic band! It doesn’t yet feel 100% like the QUOTSA I would come to know and love, but the record still has a ton of good rock tracks (my favorite being “Walkin on the Sidewalks”) and leaves you wanting to see where they’d go next.

Raw and different.

Nice late 90s rock, nothing too mind blowing though

Kind of ok songs but probably would prefer some of their later work

Fan of QOTSA but I never actually got to their pre-"songs for the deaf" albums. It's cool, a raw interpretation of their sound. Personally prefer the later albums which are a bit less raw.

Didn’t finish. It was alright. The instrumentals were cool at some points but after a while I got bored.

samey as fuck

Nowy album od znanej wczesniej bandy

No words, just that's it's a 5/10

Not too bad, just not really my thing I suppose.

This is the debut album by the American rock band Queens of the Stone Age. It is a hard rock / stoner rock album that has the heavy side of rock mixed with the danceability of trance music. Super interesting music on this album that leaves the listener feeling satisfied. I highly recommend this album to any rock fans.

lul the first song was cool idk bout the rest

Ok, so, like, I like that one song that everyone knows (No One Knows; no pun intended) but I honestly thought that I would never like a full album by this band, but I've gotta say: I was pleasantly surprised. The riffs go pretty hard, and even though it seems like Overdrive is a hammer and every song is a nail but it kinda works. It's a solid 3.5 for me, but given that I just gave The Joshua Tree a 4 (honestly probably a mistake), this one has to get the 3. Standouts: Avon, Mexicola, You Can't Quit Me Baby, Spiders and Vinegaroons

me gustó mucho al principio y después derrapó honestamente? 7/10

This was generally good but the songs seemed very similar. The vocals were a bit muddled for my taste.

alles gleich

if I was feeling especially angsty one day I’d totally listen Favorite song- Give the Mule What He Wants

They don't do anything small. I really liked tracks 8, 9 and 10

Simple hard rock. not my first choice when want to listen to this kind of music, but quite good.

Good album, but I prefer Songs For The Deaf.

« Danceable heavy trance »… an interesting description that accurately portrays what this group is up to. Some pieces are bit monotonous, others are more venturesome and experimental. All in all, another fascinating discovery (to my great surprise!)

2/2 stoned

It was kinda just fine. I feel like it could’ve used some variation in the general sound, as the heavy, crunchy guitars don’t really let up much. I enjoyed a decent amount of the songs, but overall not too much to hold on to for me. 5/10

Really well recorded. Some great tracks, but it blends together a bit.

Todd Malone think it ok. Todd Malone approve

Much like Radiohead's first studio album, this is a very solid first effort from a group that would go on to make quite a name for themselves in the history books of modern music. Some okay songs, and some really killer songs. 3.5/5

Love QOTSA. Although I think they got even better later on, this is still a really great collection of desert rock.

I have listened to every QotSA studio album EXCEPT for this one. I can't tell you why, it just never grabbed me like the others. QotSA arose after frontman Josh Homme's previous band, Kyuss, hit the bricks. Kyuss came about in the early-mid 90's during the rise of stoner rock and stoner metal. With genres defined by slower, heavier riffs and raw, crunchy tones, Homme had fine-tuned his guitar for his new band's debut album. QotSA has a knack for catchy hooks that gel well with a heavy riffs, but I find this album to be a little rough around the edges. Perhaps being more concerned with the distorted tone than writing good songs have held Homme back from a truly excellent debut. I am being a bit harsh though, as some songs land way better than others, leading to a mixed bag of songs. Future QotSA releases would see them cleaning up the sound a bit to lean more into alt rock while retaining that crunchy stoner rock core that differentiated them from other mainstream rock bands going into the 2000's (mainly reeling in the post-grunge scene and being generally disappointing). While I'm biased towards many of QotSA's other albums, I'm genuinely shocked that Songs for the Deaf did not make the list, as that would be their most popular record while also clearly defining their sound. While I can at least understand why their self-titled debut made the list, it pales in comparison to Songs for the Deaf.

Respectable, but not my bag, baby!

late 90s early 00s rock

Was OK.

In general enjoyed, honestly overall a little more mellow and vanilla than I was expecting. Which was a pro and con. Ultimately fine to listen to!

One of the few QOTSA albums I haven't listened to. Pretty good, but compared to my staples, not one of their best. 3/5

Think like most people I’m a bit confused as to why this album is on the list. I actually really like the guitar tone and the pounding song structures which Josh Homme’s riffy playing facilitates. But nevertheless a strange inclusion. My only rationale is that it showcases a relatively new approach to hard rock/stoner rock. But no more so than Homme’s work with Kyuss. An enjoyable listen nonetheless .

I enjoy QOTSA's music although I have never listened to their self-titled debut album. The music is good but I believe they are still figuring out their iconic sound. This sounds like the prototype version. I'll give this one another listen to see what I think.

I can tell my rating will be impacted by my mood and what I’m doing while I listen. I forgot all about this album (and band) and it took me right back in time. I was driving the highway with the windows down and the stereo turned way up. It was a lot of fun. Wish there were .5 scores, as this is a 3.5 in my books.

Solid album... But i still prefer the Strokes lol.

QostSA e kje heilt for meg, men absolutt lyttbart

20th June 2022 Listened throughout the day while working from home. Chilled evening doing bits around the house. Sounds like a broken down radio on the Mexican border. In a really good way. 3.5 if I could.

I enjoy listening to QOTSA records but they never wow me.

pretty enjoyable

Not their best.

Kaiken kaikkiaan kiinnostava bändi. Tämä sieltä levyjen paremmasta päästä. Ei niin hittirikas mikä on varsin ok. 3/5

QotSA:n muu tuotanto on kunnon menevää rokkia mun makuun, mutta jotenkin tää levy ei vaan iskenyt. Ihan mukiinmenevää kuitenkin.

Just enough indie rock vibe and energy (“Regular John,” “If Only” “You Can’t Quit Me”) to keep this from being another tired and redundant hard-rock/metal-adjacent record (though “Walkin on the Sidewalk” and “The Bronze” get pretty close). Not my thing exactly and won’t listen again (might try Kyuss), but a few appreciable hooks save this from full-on forgettability.

Genre: Stoner Rock 3/5 This was disappointing. I had never listened to the debut album from Queens of the Stone Age, a group I've grown quite fond of over the years. Their albums Songs for the Deaf (No One Knows, etc.) and ...Like Clockwork (God Is the Sun, etc.) are both great rock albums, but neither are in the book, which gave me the impression that their debut was going to be something to behold. Turns out the group was still in its infancy, none of the songs have the polish that their later songs have, and what we're given is a fairly lackluster garage/stoner rock album, with some minor gems, but mostly stocked with filler. Regular John, the album's intro, is a great little rock song, which I thought was setting up the rest of the album for success. As Avon and If Only finished, two other popular songs from this record, they were just okay. Nothing special, and nothing which would differentiate itself from the rest of the pack. As the album progressed, even through Mexicola, another big song from this project, I ran into this problem a lot. Sufficient, high energy, but overall not very exciting. It all starts to sound like one big guitar distortion-fest, with not much in the way of interesting songs. Some moments stood out, the solo in You Can't Quit Me Baby is fucking awesome, but not enough to warrant anything more than a 3. Listen to their other albums, you can skip this one.

more interesting than I predicted, not as good as their later work

Liked this a lot - technically brilliant, super tight instruments and just driving powerful tunes. Not always sold on some of their songs but this was a good introduction to a lot of things I'd never heard before and really helped me warm to them as a band.

Stoner rock dude. I know Songs for the Deaf and it doesn't grab me the same way but still it contain some great riffs and I may well play again. (Must explore the albums of Kyuss) Feel this is a 3.5..

Straightforward stoner rock, done in late '90s. Not too outdated eh? Guitars are interesting and the overall atmosphere is heavy. But I don't think slithery spacey guitar solos are new during those years. Overall, it's surprisingly unremarkable. I expected more than just rough riffs and spacey solos with weak vocals.

Mer likt queens of the dull age

Why is this the one Qotsa album on here and no Kyuss bruuuhhhh 💀💀💀 give me some of what Rob’s smoking!

Mjukt och tungt.

Do I like this album? Yes. Would I call it essential listening? No, not really.

Yeah decent but a lot of meh album tracks

There’s not much here. The music is fairly standard late 90s rock. It’s unimaginative, especially when you consider how much innovative music came out of the late 90s. There is an excessive amount of noodling much of it repetitive and not terribly constructive. It sounds fine but it just doesn’t seem to belong on this list

It's good, not as good as later albums but still worth a listen. I love their sound but like so many others have commented are there no other albums out there more worthy than this? 'Songs for the Deaf' is better in my opinion. Still. This is a great sound.

Just ok. Nothing too exciting, most of the album sounded the same.

Really did not have much use for this and its popularity and regard escape me. I don’t even want to spend more time thinking about the specifics; will happily never listen to this band again. Escapes a lower rating by being mostly competent If unremarkable rock and only having a tiny bit of the synthesizer knob-twiddling that made me want to throw my phone in the garbage.

Song good songs, and then a lot of noise.

I like them but this album want my favorite

Not as incredible as Songs for the Deaf, but you can hear where they are headed on this one

Some good tunes throughout, but not a super winner.

Good enough, but notable only for painting the Queens' blueprint, trancey stoner rock with sexy dance vibes. Homme and crew would refine their approach to great success, becoming one of the best, most dependable rock bands of all time, but this album may be the least of their efforts. "If Only" is a standout track and best represents their path forward.

I'm only familiar with the QOTSA songs that get radio play, haven't listened deeply. And I definitely haven't heard any of the songs from their debut album before, just the hits that came after. I like it, it's in the vein of stoner rock that I dig. I think if I'd been listening to this in college it would have stuck with me more. But it's not breaking any new ground or blowing me away sonically. It's better than a lot of the shit I've waded through so far on this list, I'll give it that. The album artwork is horrifically dated and cheap looking though. It's giving me Bollywood hip-hop / basement porno vibes.

Gutes Album, catchy riffs etc bla bla Stoner Rockig.

A bit gungey for me. Come on guys, it’s 98, contemporize.

New to me. Because I missed this band when they debuted and beyond (had heard the name, but don't recall hearing any songs), I have a feeling their sound would come across to me as more original back then than it does now, but no doubt there is some really good driving rock here. They play very well and lock into a groove that many similarly-styled bands often miss. Put another way, their composition and musicianship are slightly more disciplined in the right way. Still edgy, still driving, but not sloppy. I don't know if I'll seek out more of their music or come back to this album for more listens, but overall I liked it.

Top Songs: > Regular John > If Only > Mexicola > You Can't Quit Me Baby

was a little unrefined. like their later stuff more

Des bangers et des morceaux moins fous. Pas leur meilleur album imo.

Slightly repetitive but some good tunes on the front half.

Okay -- prefer "Songs for the Deaf"

It's alright. Sounds a little dated. But some fun tracks.

I like QOTSA, but I don't fully get why this album was chosen for this list instead of "Songs for the Deaf". This album is just mostly them trying to find their footing. You can still hear the iconic "QOTSA sound", but it's not as refined as their later works. Still pretty good, but I'd rather be listening to Songs for the Deaf or Era Vulgaris.

This stoner rock album blew my expectations away. Somewhat competent and I vibe with it heavy.

Occassionally brilliant, occassionally interesting, often just another 90's US rock band. If I'd discovered them at the time and no other 90's US rock bands ever existed then I'd have been a fan, but I didn't and they did. Nice try QOTSA, nice try.

stone it up, fuzzball

Decent rock album. They sound better than I expected. They call it "stoner rock," but that doesn't sound like a fair comparison. They sound a little more technical and together than that. Still, nothing special overall.

Brilliant

Not really in my taste. The last songs are a bit too weird and psychedelic for me

Solid enough album.

Not their best, heavy sabbath influence.

It was fine

Really liked the production sound of this.

I feel bad bc i really liked the first album of theirs i listened to (...Like Clockwork), but this didn't affect me as much and felt a little bit too long. "If Only" and "Avon" were my favorites.

It was fine, nothing really stood out to me but I didn't think anything was that bad on it.

Could feel the early 2000s/90s vibe from ot

Great stoner

Queens of the Stone Age had better albums than this, and while I don't mind it I attribute its inclusion in this list to the "look at me, I knew Queens of the Stone Age would be great way before anybody else noticed its existence" hubris factor.

I like the sound but no song really impressed me.

I wish I liked this one more

Not a bad rocker for Friday drivetime

Really good at first, but got a bit much

Generic

The songs blended together. Nice for something to not pay attention to.

QOTSA is a popular band but this album is a curious choice for inclusion on this list since it didn't have any of their hit singles or do as well commercially. It's sort of a grunge/stoner rock album with shades of Soundgarden and Black Sabbath and the opening track was a bit Radiohead-esque.

It was okay, but didn’t really do much for me

Interesting use of dissonance. all rock, no roll. solid.

Not bad not bad

After a brief flirtation with liking Queens of the Stone Age in my late teens, I quickly grew tired of Josh Homme's songwriting, guitar tone, and personality. There are a ton of genre adjacent bands like Melvins or Sleep or Clutch or Mastodon who I would take over QotSA. I guess QotSA are a little catchier, a little more radio friendly, but I'm just not impressed. This album isn't terrible, it worked fine as background music while I played video games, but it's just kind of blah to me. Low three.

Couple good tracks.

It's fine... but I find this sort of rock to be quite boring and sterile. Reminds me of listening to the "hard rock" radio and thinking this was the best shit ever.

I get what they are doing. Never dug super deep into QOTSA but I'm familiar enough and I think I like them in smaller doses, in fact if this album had been, I don't know, fifteen minutes shorter I think I would've liked it a lttle more, it just gets a little too samey after a while.

This was much better than expected. I really liked the Kraut rock influence of the driving guitars on Regular John, and just when it starts to get samey sounding they really mix it up with I was a teenage hand model. Very creative writing and arrangements for a debut album and their post grunge sound is much more appealing to me than the bigger and more popular Grunge bands out there.

Starts off great, but got more monotonous and boring to me as it went on.

That was okay. Not brilliant though. I might give this one last shot.

Spotify only had the 2011 re-issue album in their catalogue, I believe the omission of some of the added songs may have made the album flow a little better. Might have given it a slightly higher rating if it was the original track-list. Overall I thought it was a good intro to QOTSA being their debut album. Best: Regular John Worst: These Aren't the Droids You're Looking For

Really good rock album. Just solid

Wasn't amazing, wasn't bad. Right down the middle. Didn't realise it had ended, which usually means I didn't hate it haha

Still can't vibe with the Queens.

This is better walking than driving music. It comes across as a bridge between 20th-century hard rock and the garage sound of the oughts, with QOTSA flair (I hope my lack of knowledge of Kyuss is as clear as it is deep). It could have come out in 2008, which suggests that songwriting has advanced unfortunately little since its release. Except for a few tracks at the end, the recording seems like one of an exciting if long session. There's rockstar swagger but not a whole lot of boundary pushing.

QOTSA before they hit the big time. Songs are all pretty good, but very similar.

There is absolutely no way this album should be on here ahead of "songs for the deaf". Having said that, this album did kind of invent "stoner metal" and for that we should be eternally grateful

It wasn't bad, but I don't think I'd revisit this album again. My favourite song was Regular John. 3/5 stars.

Pretty standard stoner rock. Not much as a whole stuck out. The guitar is good the rest meh. Dislike this style drums.

Listened while working and it was a good album for that. Not my favorite qotsa but has some bangers.

Was always a fan, but these guys blew me away live. This album doesn't really do it for me, but I'm a huge fan of the band.

I really like this album. It's distinctively stoner rock, staying true to roots like Black Sabbath for slower tempo metal combined with kraut and modern hard rock. However, their music tries to sound too much like other people. Too much like their former band Kyuss. Too much like Black Sabbath. Someone pointed out how the beginning of "If Only" sounds just like The Stooges "I Wanna Be Your Dog." The singer sounds too much like someone... but I can't pick out who it is... Eddie Vedder? I don't know what's up with the other reviews saying they have a distinctive sound... I raise an eyebrow. Either way, I immediately liked it because it sounds like what I'm used to. The album doesn't really go in any general direction. I'll listen to their other albums, but I'm expecting just to stick to their hits.

Rock bastante monótono.

Not bad but not great. All felt a bit simple and based off one sound. I think they got better as a band but this wasn't the best.

It's fine. I don't mind if I hear it again, but I don't mind if I never hear it again either.

I know the queens of the stone age, but never actually listened to any of their work. Regular John - It's a fairly neat one, It's for sure about a prostitute, or well the relationship between them and the John. I like it, Song writing solid, Production is sweet, some guitars noises I'm pretty unfamiliar with, Vocals are great. This one is good for sure. Was gonna do a track to track review on this, but nah, I don't think I have anything to intelligent to say, atleast not anything really interesting to add. It's just good stuff. Albums long but not in a boring way. Decent way to spend my afternoon. Some real neat sounds on this one.

Yeh was alright. Good indie guitar vibes for a bit.

It's a good sound, but it gets boring pretty quick

Some good songs. Some musical nerd stuff. Some duds.

Good punky album, uniform feel, liked the vibe. Nothing special

Decent overall sound. Lots of crunchy guitars and bassy tones. Vocally there's not much there and it's a bit too long for my liking. Not bad though.

Crunchy.

I had their second album as a teenager, and went through a phase with it. Never checked out their other stuff. This one has firmer roots in stoner & psych rock. But it's stripped back to the rock basics. Guitar sounds good. I always liked his voice and what I can hear of the lyrics sound intriguing. I prefer the bigger sound of the follow-up personally. Also massively not a fan of this trash album cover, but I won't factor that in.

Good stuff.

First song has a garage-type feel to it that I really like. Other songs starting to sound a bit more metal, but like pop metal you would hear on a mainstream alternative station. Not really something I’m totally into. Actually like the last song as well. It’s a bit more mellow.

Some decent tunes. Others a bit naff

I'm honestly not sure what to say or rate. Overall, it's likeable, nothing more.

I like QOSA, but this album is not excptional

CTE opened for them when they were starting out, good listen overall

Not my favorite album of theirs

good stuff

A good listen. I hadn't heard of singer Josh Homme before his venture into QOTSA but I found his music good to listen to. Though they're not as heavy a sound as I would prefer it still had an almost metal edge to it and I didn't mind that about half the songs on the album were under 3.5 mins in length. But I found the singing was a little underwhelming and soft at times. But the guitar work was pretty good and I enjoyed it for the most part.

Too lengthy rock

Solid album, in regular rotation for me already.

not really my thing

Not like their later albums

I wonder if I'd like this without knowing what comes after it, because they get so very much better in subsequent albums. There's so much promise here, they just weren't quite there yet but you can hear it coming over the horizon. They already had such a distinctive sound. The potential is an interesting listen.

Early QOTSA. Before the record I know, but still legit. They’ve always sounded very earthy and organic to me.

It’s ok- they weren’t on my radar til No One Knows. I can see why.

I was really into this type of music back in the day, but listening to it now, it's clear that I just didn't know any better. This was okay. Best track: Regular John

Real solid and shows the potential this band has, but not my favorite QotSA. The Josh Homme guitar tone is sick

6/10. Very early qotsa FT: Regular John

Don't mind a bit of QOTSA, couldn't say they'll ever be my favourite band or anything but I always enjoy it. I don't think I've heard this album before, but so far sounds pretty cool. I want to give it a 4, but it'll probably just be a 3.

Eh this was fine. Early 2000s rock core

Aika ankeeta menoa ja äänimaailma kävi paikoin korville. Parissa biisissä jotain yritystä mutta laulu pilas senkin.

Not very memorable

Homme’s music works best for me when someone else is singing. I mostly just don’t buy him as a singer and his melodies have never done much for me, but, throw in Oliveri or Lanegan and that pops the champagne bottle. Alas, while I admire the instrumental concepts here (and on Rated R), it’s not until Deaf that the style yields anything worthwhile.

Inoffensive, but utterly boring.

This is one of those bands that seem like I should like them, but then I listen to them and am decidedly underwhelmed. None of the songs grab....they're just Meh.

The grunge sound isn’t my favorite unless it’s accompanied by some killer melodies and instrumentation. Unfortunately I didn’t really find that here. Kind of droned on. Not an unpleasant listen but it didn’t really pop

This is a paradox in that it's a slog to get through yet I'm intrigued enough to consider exploring some of their other stuff.

I didn't like this one. On one hand it's well made, I guess, but i just don't find it interesting in anyway. It actually beggins quit good with good guitar and voice by Josh Homme. 2 or 3 songs in I had hope, but it all went downhill from there. It all felt to repetitive and lacks good ideas. Even trying to shake it with a long instrumental thing makes one of the worst tracks here. The last one is pretty nasty as well. Sorry, I'm on the verge of 1, but it's not quite there Flat 2.very flat

No me parece nada wow. 4/10

Boring. Not a fan. It wasn't the worst thing I ever heard, but I never need to hear it again.

Very Bassey, so I like the deep vibes.

I don’t know I don’t really like this one. 5/10

Sunday, 10 May, 2026 Not one track stood out above the rest. The most interesting part was the end of the last track. Other QotSA albums are more interesting. Them Crooked Vultures is also more interesting.

Queens of the Stone Age has some good songs, but this is the first of their entire records I sat through. Must say I'm a bit disappointed. Their guitar tone is on point. But these songs seriously lacks hooks and can get quite monotonous. And I think the singing is mixed weirdly or something as it sounds much more weak than it should. As this wasn't enough, it's way too long in my opinion. After reading on Wikipedia, I realized I might've gotten the 2011 reissue ,though, which is longer than the original by 15 minutes. It doesn't seem like their Songs for the Dead album is on this list, which feels criminal as that is miles better than this.

I had no idea they had been around this long. Most of this wasn’t terrible, but a lot of it did sound like them just practicing guitar riffs over and over and over.

Atonal vocals made this hard to listen to. DNF.

A bit too slow and samey

I liked the part where every song repeats the 5 second sound clip

- More DV. - I like the last song best! - The rest didn't really reel me in - I think it just kind of ends up feeling typical "alternative" 90s/2000s. There are definitely Queens of the Stone Age albums that I like(d) better than this one. I listened to it twice, but that was enough.

These vocals are horrific, this is like a milk toast nirvana. In general this does very little for me. Sounds like generic 2000s rock that is neither sufficiently grunge or shoegaze, some unfortunate in between. It's not godawful in net but just not doing much for me

Decent, nothing special or memorable.

I found this rather boring.

I didn't particularly like the last instrumental tracks, and some of them seemed a bit long. But overall, good album.

Regular, straight ahead rock. I just feel like this band has much better music and even that music isn’t really for me.

Not their best by a long shot. Too repetitive in places.

Nothing special, not bad though.

Pretty forgettable middle of the road hard Rock. Not feeling it much. 2 out of 5 stars.

These guys are unique - They may go somewhere

I assumed Queens of the Stone Age had more personality to them, but this was pretty bland and generic early 2000s rock

Number: 98 Date: 04/11/2026 Artist: Queens Of The Stone Age Album: Queens Of The Stone Age Year: 1998 Genre: 90s Alternative Rock Rating: 2 Notes: Before: ======= I've heard of them, obviously, but never intentionally listened to them. During: ======= Not too bad. It has a nice energy about it. So they are a stoner band? This should have been right up my alley back in the day, but I probably dismissed them as they were somewhat popular. 4 songs in now. It's OK, but I had much better stuff to listen to back then, or so I thought. Anyways, it's not really my favorite type of music. I guess it's a little too mainstream. I Was A Teenage Hand Model is interesting. It would have been nice if they had explored that path a little more. After : ======= Didn't Nirvana already do this, so what's the point? 4 Regular John 3 Avon 3 If Only 4 Walkin' On The Sidewalks 2 You Would Know 3 The Bronze 3 How To Handle A Rope 3 Mexicola 3 Hispanic Impressions 3 You Can't Quit Me Baby 3 These Aren't the Droids You're Looking For 3 Give The Mule What He Wants 2 Spiders and Vinegaroons 4 I Was A Teenage Hand Model ----------------------------------------------------- 3.07 WEIGHTED AVERAGE (accounts for song lengths) After : ======= 3 my personal rating 1 suitability for this list 2 impact ----------------------------------------------- 2 composite rating

1. The Bronze 2. Regular John Only 2 because it was kinda mid

Was never a fan of Queens Of The Stone Age. Though there are some bangers. “If Only” is great.

Thought I was getting into this, starting to get a Smashing Pumpkins vibe, but on the second listen I lost it and couldn't find anything to hang onto.

A real chore of an album to get through. I know QOTSA from the singles but was never inticed to listen to a full album before. I get that they are a highly rated band and live act but I just can't find the will the enjoy this.

This was fine - nothing particularly stood out - straightforward rock. I’m not against it - it just didn’t grab me.

Jeez could they find any bass lines and rhythms more monotonous if they tried. Have to admit it wasn’t as bad as I was expecting given the tasteless album cover but I remain unimpressed - some songs started off promising but just trailed into bleh.

Saw them open for the foo fighters in like 1999, good times but never really got into these guys.

This album is really boring, I wanted to like it after hearing some of their later work. The tracks with vocals are ok and inoffensive but the instrumentals are really boring with no changes throughout and I had to skip them.

A band I normally enjoy listening to whenever I take a notion but never seek out too often. The opener, Regular John, was really good but it went steadily downhill after that. I hated Hispanic Impressions and it was really hard to get back into it after that. I definitely think Songs For The Deaf should’ve been on the list instead or even Era Vulgaris.

mid et -1 pour la cover

Favorite tracks: If Only, You Would Know, Spiders and Vinegaroons This one was disappointing. A couple good tracks but most of them were just a little too muddy for me to enjoy.

Its ok. But it is objectively repetitive.

Totalno nezanimljivo, nisu mi nikad sjeli, baš ravna crta. Igrom slučaja slušat ću ih live ove godine, sve me strah 😄 2/5, 3/10

This is another debut effort, from that heavy metal band from the west coast. I listened to the remastered version, as I was too lazy to determine which of the added tracks to skip. The chatter and sounds at the end of the last track did not add anything in my opinion. The music was crisp, and I enjoyed the harmonies, otherwise everything else was forgettable.

teils langwilig, langatmig; nervigi musig, wieso schribt mer so öppis spiders and vinegaroons ganz geile groove

Meh. I'm sure it was great when it came out but it didn't grab me then and it's doesn't now either.

Jadu, antingen var jag inte in the mood idag men det här var så tråkigt. Tyckte inte om. Spolade igenom låtarna. Snark. Mitt fika tog slut på en sekund. Inte bra tecken. Inte katastrof dock. 3,5/10

Ok but a bit 'poor man's Nirvana' If this had been a book it would have needed editing .

Found this a bit dull and boring if I'm honest. There's much better mediocre rock on this list.

Boring

Some cool riffs

Not great. Each song seemed to have its own relatively simple rhythm/guitar theme that just repeated alongside droning vocals. Then it was time to change the rhythm/guitar a bit for the next track for some droning vocals. Not one I'll go back to.

Didn't love it.

Too chaotic

This was disappointing as I like their later stuff. The opening track has a bit about it, but little else caught my attention.

Few artists have been more disappointing in living up to my prior perception of what they sound like than this band. Boring AF. And I love guitar riffage, but maybe that's why - this is just not that good or clever as it is made out to be.

Wasn't really into this. Sounded like exactly what it was, a debut album where a band are trying to figure out their sound. Some of the riffs and guitar work were impressive but I didn't feel as though any track stood out. Knowing how much cleaner they sound a few years later, I was a bit disappointed with this one. 2.5/5

Grungy to start, glorpy at the end. Fun electronic influence on rock, industrial and moody. Sounded a lot like some influential Nine Inch Nails tracks.

This didn’t land for me overall, which was disappointing because I had high hopes. I liked the instrumental groove on Regular John, but the vocals really turned me off. Spiders and Vinegaroons was especially annoying, and that feeling carried across much of the album. There are a couple of decent tracks scattered throughout, but not enough to make this one a real win for me.

I'm not consider myself to be a QOTSA fan by any means. I know their 2-3 most famous songs because they were basically everywhere, but although I liked these, I never bothered to have a look at their albums. Honestly, it's hard to believe that these are the same guys. Never in my life have I heard such a boring and uninspiring album. Neither the guitar riffs, nor the weak lyrics could catch me, leaving me with an overall bad impression of this album. I really hope their newer albums are better.

From a modern perspective, this could be the play-along soundtrack to a how-to play rock music for beginners coursebook. Very standard, good execution, not-quite-boring but nothing special, for the most part. With Walkin on the Sidewalks, the album starts to exhibit a handful of interesting moments.

Variera mellan för monotont och för knäppt! En tvåa

You have to like it. This is not my style. maybe it’s useful as workout music, but it’s too repetitive for my taste.

Your dad loves track number 2

p834. 1998. 2 stars. Derivative, noisy Nirvana wannabes but without the songs.

Too basic. Too stoned. 5/10

Not into it. Don't like his voice, everything sounds dull/blurry. I think I would like this if I was very drunk....

Kinda sucks. Bass sounds muddy. Some tracks were pretty upbeat, and some had a decent sound to them, but I never got the message. Will never understand stoner culture (probably 'cause I have no plans of doing psychedelics any time soon), and this album doesn't really do anything to hype it for me.

While I like this album I believe the later albums from them with lannegan singing are better. Solid album but not the pinnacle.

This album confuses me. I honestly knew nothing about this band, other than their name. Were they from the 70s? Oh, no from the 90s, ok. That makes a little more sense. But the music is still confusing to me. I won't say I hate it, but I'm not going to ever choose to listen to this album again.

Not a patch on later stuff

A+ cover art damn. heavy rock is a hit or miss for me and this was sadly a miss.

I thought I was going to like this but it ended up sounding like it was made in their garage and they ran out of ideas so they just kept playing music

Cannot get into this band. Do not like the vocals or the tempo.

2 - liked a few things but most of it wasn’t great

Much powerchord. Such strumming. Very 4/4. First 2 tracks, multiple guitars, but all playing in harmony with a bland 4/4 time signature in 4 bar patterns? Drums just playing a simple rock beat. Repetitive and droll. "If Only" goes down to a 2 bar repeat. Still 4/4. Rest of the album is more of the same... find a riff, play riff for 2 minutes with no variation... switch to a very slightly different riff for the final minute, maybe sneak in a generic guitar solo if you're feeling a bit naughty. "Hispanic Impressions" managed some non-4/4 time signatures for the first 30 seconds at least, then back to 4/4 obviously, but at least it tried. The latter half of the album arguably got a bit more creative, but it wasn't good, it somehow got worse to listen to. This is probably the genre of music I spend most time listening to but I think there's a reason Queens of the Stone Age are a band I've never really bothered with. The only thing saving this from a 1 rating is the fact that it's not actively unpleasant to listen to, it's just boring. There's the odd bit of interest but everything is repeated to the point of irritation - maybe if I listened in 5-10 second bursts I'd think they were incredible.

Every song seems to find a riff that it refuses to move from for the next 2 minutes. Some riffs are cool, some are 1 Chord over and over, every single riff get boring after 2 minutes. This is like purgatory in album form You Would Know actually experimented with their sound at the end rather having the guitars copy each other I feel like the album starts getting better around half way through but I still feel like I'm going insane sometimes. The ending of the last song was atrocious, it's like they listened to some experimental music and thought "Oh it's a bunch of random sounds I can do that" High 2

I’ve been meaning to listen to QOTSA for a while and shocked it’s not their well known one. I got my hopes up a bit too much seeing references to Can to describe their music. It was fine and feels like something that would click better once I see the heights they reach later. The 45 minutes felt like 90 unfortunately. A bizarre choice. Just put the album where they fully realize the style instead of them working to it. An essential listen for fans of the band, not the music world as a whole. Rating: 2.1

This seems like an album I SHOULD like but I absolutely do not. Probably released just a year or more too late for me.

Not as good as their more famous album

interesting album, will not come back to it anytime soon. some of the songs were good but the separation in the ears was fucking me up too much

Viagra was approved by the FDA for erectile dysfunction in the U.S. in 1998, and also for limp dicked repetitive and fucking boring “rock” albums debuts. The 90’s had so much innovative and great music. This wasn’t apart of that. This album is mid at best, but it’s not even mid.

Ikke fan.

2/5 favorite song : mexicola

I like the sound of the music but the vocals arent my favorite</3 favorite is you cant quit me baby

I was excited to finally listen to Queens of the Stone Age. My excitement surely and steadily dropped as I listened more. Maybe they are doing something clever but in the end it's pretty dang boring.

I’m going into this very blind as I have literally never heard of this band in my life Regular John- 6/10 Aron- 5/10 If only- 5.5/10 Walk-in on the sidewalks- 5/10 You would know- 5.5/10 The bronze- 6.5/10 only banger so far How to handle a rope- 6.5/10 ok defo getting better Mexicola- 6.5/10 all three have been added to my rock playlist Hispanic impressions- 2/10 really jus not a big fan of music with no words ( the only people who can get away with it are pink Floyd) You can’t quit me baby- 4/10 These aren’t the droids you’re looking for- 3/10 again?! Give the mule what he wants- 4/10 Spiders and vinegaroons- 1/10 I was a teenage hand model-2/10 probably the weirdest song I’ve ever heard Really not a big fan of this album at all, there were 2/3 songs that I enjoyed but really nothing special

I have heard this record and multiple other Queens of the Stone Age records before, so I am biased on this one. Decent record. Parts that are pretty cool. But a lot of it is pretty musically simplistic, the songwriting is a little weak at times and the production is fine, but is missing something. Feels like a demo for what they would become. It’s weird that this is the album from this band that they chose. It’s very immature, but gives you an idea of where their sound is going to end up. I think they have far better records. 2.75/5.

A little boring? Not sure why this album over the much more popular and impactful one

Not for me

Not interested in this at all

I was disappointed by this one, I was looking forward to listening to more songs of QOTSA, but I felt I listened to the same thing the entire album.

A QotSA album with none of their songs that are worth caring about. Parts of the first track made me think of Lavender Town which is perfect because after an hour of this you might wish you were attending a funeral for a Marowak instead.

Stoner rock album from the late 1990s. It's pretty generic, typical alternative rock from the end of that decade, quite boring overall, but it's well played nonetheless. I can't give this 3 stars because there are better 3 star albums than this and many 4 star albums are brilliant compared to this! So it gets a 2.

Don't see the hype.

"The music is not in the notes but the silence between them".....in which case this album feels like it needs more room to make the overall sound less noisy/messy. Not a lot of range to the songs on this album (unlike later work)
