Reviews (page 8 of 9)
Did not enjoy this. Not my thing.
Are you sure this isn't late career Alice in Chains after they had run out of good song ideas and rebranded? That Rooster song is twice as good as all the songs on this album combined. Or it could be City and Colour trying to play rock music? Wait a moment...it is City and Colour, not Color...that can only mean one thing...that there is a chance the torturous experience of listening to Save your Scissors is uniquely Canadian? Go look it up, you will probably regret it.
The sound is Great... but there are no hits i recognize and no new songs i can remember. Some of the instrumental noodelings can be a bit much. It is just the first album.
If I could give this negative stars I would
It’s all just a bit luke warm
Not my favorite type of music but can respect it. Couple songs that I liked. Thought I’d like it more than I did. Last couple songs almost dropped it to 1 star.
Got To Get You Into My Life Eleanor Rigby Here There and Everywhere
Not too bad, but a lot of the songs sounded similar with similar guitar sounds.
People around me who like the same type of music I do seem to love Queens of the Stone Age, but I have never really been a fan. There are a few tracks from their discography that I am quite fond of, but unfortunately none of them put in an appearance here. There isn't much unique about this album, but it's still good-just not something I will come back to often. Or maybe ever. 2.5/5, but I am rounding down. Favorite track: "Mexicola"
1, la la lala la la 2. la lala la la3. la la lala.repeat.. c
This band is epically boring.
Meh
Pleasant uncomplicated rock
Trying to be Nirvana and not succeeding.
Nine years before this album, Masters of Reality released their first album. I'd understand why that album would be on this list but not this one. QotSA are a cool band and have cool songs but a whole album of this music? Meh.
This is #day427 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… I've always overlooked this band. Not sure why. I've been aware of their existence, but I've never felt the urge to dive in. I had a brief infatuation with stoner/desert rock about ten years ago (think Get Your Gun), and that was that. Now that I've heard this record, there's little that draws me back. This is a 2 out of 5. Looking forward to #day428.
Another one that I wanted to enjoy more than I did but to be honest, I found it quite boring.
The most damning thing about this record is that I hadn't even clocked that I was halfway done with this until I went to check the tracklisting. It's all so one note and monotonous, but not in a way that allows you to lock in and just be taken along by it like a motorik rock record. Did enjoy You Can't Quit Me Baby, maybe they just needed to dial down the scuzzy sound a bit and let the music and vocals have a bit of room to breathe
Kind of boring
This feels pretty generic. Like, with my eyes closed I could assume this is Foo Fighters.
This is an obviously important album, but it doesn't fully click with me. Queens of the Stone Age don't really fit in with their contemporaries. They're harder than the Chili Peppers, but not as hard as actual metal bands. This makes their niche weirdly small. Anyway, I didn't hate the album, but it's not something I think I'll really revisit. Best Songs: Regular John, How to Handle a Rope, Mexicola Worst Songs: These Aren't the Droids..., Spiders and Vinegaroons
Background music...
Didn't really enjoy this but not awful enough for 1*
I'm not sure I'll ever quite understand why so many people hold QotSA in such high regard. There is something about the sound / mix that never sits right with me and makes everything sound not quite so good as it could have. There are a couple of good tracks on this album but it's mostly unremarkable fare that goes on too long.
Fine.
Oh cool, my like fifth or sixth favorite QOTSA album. This list is often lame. Rated R, Era Vulgaris, Songs for the Deaf…all like twice as good as this album.
Mmmm albums like these make me lose faith in this list...Not by far best or most influantial QOTSA album...for me no place in this list...unless you make a 1001 stoner album list....
I can't say it better than this random Redditor: "They suck. Their shit is buttock trying to be 10 different genres at the same time. At the end of the day it's boring ass shit."
Meh, not as good as songs for the deaf. Later songs seem too long for what they are. Not too bad to listen to in the background though
I'm not one for hard rock even though I like heavy music. It just reminds me of every lame stoner kid in high school and feels just as generic. This is a solid debut but so weird that Songs for the Deaf or ... Like Clockwork or not included instead. Nothing on this project rises above the genre in any meaningful manner.
Really not a great album if I'm honest
Nothing special. Another, “Why is this here?”
This sucked so much I’m surprised anyone let them make another album
I actually like Rock, but this got pretty annoying.
Josh Homme is a known to be a garbage human, but with that aside, my observation is… his voice doesn’t match the energy of the music. It rocks pretty hard, though.
Just could not get into this album. I like rock and guitar driven music, but this one left me saying, "So what?" after many songs. No real rockers that grabbed me. I feel like I should have liked it more given the band's wide fan base. Maybe later albums are better>
This is the first time I've ever listened to QotSA consciously. I can't see the reason why it is on this list. The song structure is simple and, in most cases, nearly the same. It gets boring pretty fast, and the singing doesn't help, either. Bland, boring, repetitive.
Never listened to a QOTS album. To me it sounds like Soundgarden lost tapes. This isn't their best album (Songs for the Deaf) - why is it even on this list. Best Songs How to Handle a Rope (A Lesson in the Lariat)
One, six, two, seven, eight... Two, six, three, seven, eight, nine... Where's your record label, Pearl Jam? En la lápida, el epitafio: “Aquí yace The Queen of the Stone Age”. Two, six, three, seven, eight, nine...Where’s your record label, Pearl Jam? I want to be Rated R.
Not really for me.
There were a couple that caught my ear for a minute, but largely forgettable.
This is some pretty generic power chord middle of the road rock. It’s not bad. But it definitely did not standout as memorable. There were some interesting drum dynamics on songs, but the guitar work and vocal delivery is pretty bland. A band trying to be like other bands that are better.
No character, no split second sense of pop profundity, just a droned out mashup of Radiohead and Jane's Addiction: the bad philosophizing, the bad hard rock. It's not stoner rock - it's not even pointless pop - it's bland and entirely burnt out: I like stoners who're still getting something out of it. Besides, in '98, hip-hop was the thing: Big Pun's Capital Punishment, anyone? Worse than Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains: those guys are in a rut they're trying to escape; these braindeads are in a rut they think is a groove: 'Hispanic Impressions.' Some interesting instrumental moments towards the end, but mostly a yard-age of gar-bage.
Every song felt like an eternity. Way too repetitive and boring for my taste. A couple tracks don't suck.
I don’t really care for this type of music.
Day 9 First listen- I really liked the gritty guitar in the songs. The album felt quite long and boring at times though. I guess I will appreciate it more with repeated listening but for now its 2.5/5.
I don’t need to listen to this again
I don't get it; I could think about it and get it but I don't think I would enjoy it still
Yep. Definitely stoner rock. This album made me think of sitting on a musty couch in a dank basement playing Killer Instinct on SNES trying to escape the humid July heat before my evening shift of flipping burgers and twisting soft serve at the miniature golf course. I'll give it a bonus star for somehow managing to evoke that nightmare.
Ugh ... more 90s drek. Please see my review on the 90s just picking up leftover scraps of prior decades, Queens of the Stone Age sound like they were the last to show up at that proverbial scrap pile. I know nothing about the author of "1,001 Albums to Hear Before You Die" ... but it feels like they were born in the 80s, so they completey ignore the good stuff from the 80s. They probably learned about the late 60s and 70s from their parents. They most likely spent their teenage years in the 90s, and wanted a source to share all their favorites here. Granted I have only hit 80 albums on the list at this point, but 20 of them are 90s albums. So does that mean I have to listen to 230 more 90s albums?
The first track “Regular John” was awesome. After that it got less propulsive and more sludgy which I liked quite a bit less
Harsh instrumentals and monotone vocals. Lots of repetition. Not particularly memorable.
It “rocks” but is just not for me
I dunno. It wasn't as bad as I remembered but still pretty bad.
Kinda felt like watered down Foo Fighters/RHCP - not for me, maybe
I guess I can understand the appeal to someone who liked this sort of thing but this was not for me.
There are two versions of this album. The original 1998 recording makes a lot more sense to me genre-wise, than the remaster with added guitar tracks and additional songs. I like the aggressive guitar work and the interplay with the drums is awesome. The vocals don't do much for me. Docking an additional star because Josh Homme seems like an abusive shithead
Never a huge fan of Queens of the Stone Age, but I like there later stuff better.
Not for me
First half is great. Acid rock/stoner rock/whatever you want to call it. Second half drags a bit.
Didn’t like it
Heard it before. I'm not the biggest QotSA fan but I do really enjoy them whenever I listen to their albums. This album though really suffers from being so long. I kinda got bored of all the filler material halfway through 2/5
I have learned I’m not a fan of stoner rock. This album was too specifically that for me. I heard a couple songs I liked by them after this album played, but I couldn’t tell one song from the next
QOTSA can fuck off
Not for me
I like the grunginess but the album at large didn't really wow me
Some dirty riffs but no particularly memorable songs. Surprisingly grunge inspired.
I actually enjoyed this more than some of the later QOTSA albums. A little more raw sounding.
They get a lot of mileage out of one chord rave-ups. Or at least a mile - give or take. A band I have always felt should be better for both obvious reasons (employing the greatest rock drummer of his generation) and less so (their highs are awesome but buried under mediocre tracks casting infinite permutations of brown). When they cut loose and go searching a bit - ala the last two tracks - things get a little more interesting. A little. This happens on every album - but not enough.
I know anecdotally that there are a bunch of Queens of the Stone Age fans. But I’ve never really got them. It’s fine, I guess. A whole album is too much for me. 2/5
The most interesting part of this album was discovering a sample used by Skepta. QOTSA are best in small doses in my opinion, an album feels too long.
Not my genre.
My original review back in January still stands: “I like QotSA, but this album seemed a little repetitive. I really like the overall sound, but the repetition is not for me. Sometimes it's bearable, other times just not at all! I think other albums are better.”
First half of the album was really strong but they lost me on the second half. Got a bit boring but as a whole thing its still a solid tape. (2.5/5.0)
It began to drag at the end. I also preferred the songs with no vocals.
What a weird cover. Not my jam at all.
Not really my thing and I likely won't choose to listen to it again. So, two stars.
Totally boring and unoriginal. Terrible album. 3/10
The fact this came out in 98 is crazy. There is almost nothing going on. It's just a wall of hard rock (derogatory). It doesn't even have context to help support lackluster and uninteresting musicianship. You had decades of rock music to work off of and this is what you come up with? As for the vocals, has Josh Homme considered adding any life to his delivery? I'm not even sure if drugs would help this one. Rating: 4/10 Favorite Song: Avon
Varenda låt låter ju likadant.
This might be the most repetitive album I've had the displeasure of listening to
The last track is unforgivable. Imagine listening to those god damn bleep bloops with earphones. Just annoying as fuck. Ruined the whole thing Pretentious boring dross
Like every other QOTSA album I’ve listened to, this is largely uninteresting rock moments with a few great moments over far too long of a run time. Doesn’t have one high that comes even close to some of their other albums, and the lows are generally lower. I do not like this band very much! The stereo output on this thing is kinda cool tho.
Like every other QOTSA album, some interesting highs but too much meandering music that goes nowhere. Josh Hommes voice can get very grating.
I mean, sure. Why not? I guess. Never been a huge Queens of the Stone Age fan. I understand this album being on the list, but I still don’t like it much.
I don't like the frontman of this nor the album cover ig 2 stars I could listen to other stoner rock I like the frontperson for
Very ok meh Grunge rock
not bad but not for me
Mostly okay, but not something I would normally listen to. It was fine for background noise
fine but i was bored there's better options out there if you want this kind of thing
Ehhhh....nothing really got my attention here at all. The vocals here never grabbed me and I found the guitar parts to be quite uninteresting. There were some songs here I "liked" but nothing here I really "loved." There are plenty of QOTSA songs that I enjoy, but none were here. Liked Songs: "Avon" , "If Only" , "The Bronze"
Singing words at different speeds over the same music.
boring rock
Dirge. Never did see what the fuss was about and album doesn't even have That One Song.
I started this a few times and then gave up sorry. It wasn’t horrible I just didn’t feel like listening to that
Meget groovy!
Kyllähän Queens of the Stone Age venyttää osaa, mutta tämä oli jo lähes extremeä: aivan liian pitkä, turhaa kilistelyä, kyllästyin. Bändin oma soundikaan ei päässyt oikeuksiinsa.
He aloittavat albumin todellisella, no, energialla - vähän kuin grungempi Hellacopters. Kokonaisuus on kuitenkin pitkä, junnaava ja raskas. Ai kutsutaanko tätä "stoner rockiksi"? Okei.
Kind of a forgettable album for me. I was never into them and I still think they are just okay. I'm not sorry I listened to it, it's good for a background track while working or something like that. Wouldn't go out of my way to hear it again though.
Dad rock meets Stone Temple Pilots and it makes for a nondescript, generic 90s but album
Meh, didn't like it, nether I hated it
At first this started out seemingly cool, but I got bored of it relatively quick. It’s a riffy album - little riffs of hypnotic repeating (almost droney sometimes) fuzzy chords under decent creamy lead riffs. The guitar tones are what I like most here. It’s certainly got that hazy stoner sound that can envelope you in a distinct way from a More overt psychedelic sound. While a few songs pack a punch, the ones that don’t are somewhat bland and generic rock-y. I just have little interest in coming back to this.
Meh. I didn't hate it, but it was not very appealing to me. I don't really have much to say on this one, it wasn't very interesting.
I've always found Queens of the Stone Age bland.
I could never get into QOTSA. I think it's because there isn't much in the way of talent there. If ya listen, they just wail out the same fuzzy power chords. Super simple songs. I can't really nail down why they never hit with me, but they didn't. I had a real hard time listening to this one. Took me all day, because I just don't care. They are just so.... Boring. Also, the album cover gives me the heeby jeebies for some reason. Favourite songs: Mexicola, If Only, Avon, How to Handle a Rope (A Lesson in the Lariat) Least favourite songs: Hispanic Impressions, Spiders and Vinegaroons, I Was a Teenage Hand Model, These Aren't the Droids You're Looking For 2/5
They called this "stoner rock." OK. I guess that it's fun with riffage and all -- but there's a difference to me between music that sounds good when you're on drugs and music that you have to be on drugs for it to sound good. This QOTSA album is the latter. Not my thing.
Queens of the Stone Age is one of those bands that I really want to like. They have such a cool fucking distorted heavy guitar sound. But they don't write very many GOOD songs. I couldn't find any on this album. Kind of boring.
This really lacked any kind of personality for me. Felt like underwhelming, bland garage rock. And I could barely understand any of the lyrics. Not a fan.
Didn't hate it, didn't especially like it.
2? 3? 2? 3? ...2.
barebones waiting room grunge rock that turns psychedelic. some interesting grooves but with a lot of wasted space. 2.5/5
Humdrum
I genuinely didn't know QOTSA had a self-titled album until this popped up, I always thought Songs for the Deaf was their debut. After listening to it, I'm not sure why this one was chosen as I don't really think it's even particularly close to as good as their best albums. Not a bad album, but shouldn't be on this list.
This seemed like Soundgarden without the necessary Chris Cornell vocals. It was ok. But struggled to grab me with any of the tracks.
kusisyöpää pääosin mutta muutama kuunneltava osio mutta pääosin huorapaskaa ripulikalaa koiravittua pissalutakko musiikkia suurimmalta osaltaan.2.7 - Ei todellakaan mitään erikoista. Siinä on suoraviivainen, kaupallinen hard rock -soundi. (en vitussa kuuntele) if only
I think that the skill level wasn’t exactly good because of the guitar play. If the skill was better, it would be a 3
They made some music here. Not my cup of tea, but not awful. But for most songs, if it were to come on, I'd seek other options on my radio/Pandora/or whatever.
Enjoyed it front to back which is pretty surprising for ostensibly conventional rock. Even the vocals were okay!
First track off rip if awful. Bad first impression that’s hard to pull me back. Second track is just a little mediocre. Walkin on Sidewalks and You Would Know are the only decent tracks. The rest is grating. It’s a dull new school band trying to be old school and it’s not landing for me. You Can’t Quit Me is interesting tho and I kinda wish this album was more of that. Truthfully there’s a point it almost grows on me near the end but it’s either too little too late or not enough to change my mind significantly.
Category is generic rock
eh. honestly just bland and boring
For me, I didn’t quite know how to feel about this album. I don’t love heavy rock and don’t listen to it much either. Of all the grungy 2000s albums I’ve listened to, this one was actually pretty good. The guitar wasn’t anything unheard of but it was a good listen and same goes for the vocals. I wasn’t surprised that this was their debut because some songs did feel like demos, QotSA have definitely made better albums since.
Just like yesterday’s offering Sonic Youth I know of the Queens of the Stone Age but I’ve hardly taken any notice of them. So like yesterday I was wondering if my indifference could be ignited. Yesterday the ignition was like holding a match to a wet leaf in the wind. Today it reminded me of a lighter when you first use it and it nearly takes your eyebrows off. An analogy to describe this albums first track. But just like a lighter the initial flame reduced to just above the wick and I was left debating whether or not to relight the lighter but didn’t bother. A lighter is more exciting than a match so it can have one more star. 2/5 25/7/24
First time with this one. I have to admit I expected more from this. It's pretty good generic rock but not very memorable. It is possible that I may have heard some of these tunes on the radio when this was released but like then I don't remember them. I am really not a fan of the Seattle-based bands of the 90s, they have a few good songs but it's not my thing.
This.. Is not my style. Gonna rate it low, but doesn't mean it was terrible. Walking on the sidewalks is one or two minutes too long, just self indulgence of the guitar . This whole album feels like it has a story that it refuses to tell us.
Stoner rock has never been a genre I've been a huge fan of. It's fine, but I find it rhythmically slow and kind of boring for the most part. Which is probably really cool if you are stoned. I'm just not a stoner and it doesn't catch me. I think the only QotSA song I know is 'No One Knows' which wouldn't come around until quite a few years later Standouts Regular John I Was a Teenage Hand Model How to Handle a Rope (A Lesson in the Lariat) 2/5
I agree with another reviewer that this is generic rock music. I usually give that description a three. However, now that I’ve listened to the album I am so annoyed by how often they take a riff and repeat it dozens of times that I am docking them a star. Figure out another way to pad your songs guys.
More mush than grunge. I'm not convinced by them or him, there's the odd exception but none on this album. All a bit dull to me. And he ruined the Arctic Monkeys! 😀
It was fine, probably won’t listen to this one ever again.
Nothing exciting at all
Mid. Repetitive.
Mostly noisy hard Rock. Most interesting spheric/ambient sounding instrumental is "Spiders and Vinegaroons".
An hour of chugging fuzzy nothing.
well the album started out decent, with a few songs that felt like demos or prototypes of later QotSA tracks. after that though? just an endless desert of sound with only the occasional tumbleweed for interest. the vocals, guitars, lyrics, songwriting, and basically everything else just felt like a tribute band for a big-name grunge act decided to try their hand at originals. it's rough, it's strange, and it's not particularly fun or interesting. though maybe I'm not the most reliable source. i thought songs for the deaf was their first album... first good album, maybe. not sure how this horny juvenile dreck made it on the list over SftD or any of the later albums where they actually knew how to write and record compelling songs. favorites: regular john, avon, if only
One of the ugliest covers i've seen so far. Whoever edited that photo and chose that font... I just wanna talk. It fits the music though, definitely not their best sound – it's repetitive and boring. Their more recent stuff is so much better.
Josh Homme should be on the 1001 list, no question. But not for this record, which is uninteresting and sounds unfinished - weak singing and repetitive songs. Lullabies and Them Crooked Vultures (side project) are much better intros. This album is staying on the shelf.
Never understood the hype
Sounds kind of grungy at times, heavy metal at others. Vocals sound like Ozzy on occassion. It's okay, but doesn't do much for me. 2.9
Zzzzzzz a couple neat songs but mostly boring
01) Regular John - 7,0 02) Avon - 6,0 03) If Only - 6,5 04) Walkin' on the Sidewalks - 6,0 05) You Would Know - 6,0 06) How to Handle a Rope - 6,5 07) Mexicola - 6,0 08) Hispanic Impressions - 5,0 09) You Can't Quit Me Baby - 5,5 10) Give the Mule What He Wants - 5,5 11) I Was a Teenage Hand Model - 6,5 TOTAL: 6,05 (60/100) I guess the only worthy albums in the world are rock albums. All of them. Every day. And it's getting boring. They all start to sound the same. Endless riffs, guitars, drums...I'm getting tired of it and my marks will reflect it. This one is so worthy that nobody but their fans know the songs from it. It reached fascinating number 48 in the UK albums chart and number 122 on Billboard... 121 albums were better selling that week. 121.
My first contact with the band. It was not a good first impresion.
never been the biggest fans. A couple of good songs. Otherwise not my jam.
Somewhat generic and nondescript with some decent material thrown in. Just not that memorable.
not my vibe
Not a big fan. There is nothing special here that would make me want to listen to this on my own. Extremely generic sounding rock with very repetitive lyrics and chords. It's not *bad*, but gets really boring, and it's certainly not good enough to justify that boringness. Vocals are also really weak, and the mixing is quite bad, I could barely hear the singing sometimes. A stronger 2, but doesn't reach 3 for me.
I liked the first song. I found the rest of the album very annoying.
Nein danke
Decent enough, a couple of enjoyable tracks, not enough to make me listen again.
This album was just okay as it was released. It was definitely a rookie album by a band trying to find their footing. There is a lot of talent for sure. With the inclusion of The Bronze i would add another star as that is my favorite QotSA song of all time.
Now I know what boredom is
It has its moments, enjoyed If Only and You Would Know, but Hispanic Impressions made me think of the theme music to 1970s animated Richard Briers vehicle Rhubarb And Custard.
Before I ever heard a QOTSA album, I heard them live on the NIN's WITH TEETH tour. My first impression was that each song was a barely different long dirge from the last one. I considered that perhaps my experience was just a result of the difficulties of mixing sound for an arena setting, but after returning home I listened to a couple of their albums and had the same impression. I suppose sameness is a legit creative choice, but it comes off feeling….I don’t know…lazy? As a drummer, I found the drum tracks pretty boring. Less trance-like, and just uninspired. When the drummer had a chance to imprint an identity on the song, they seemed to just resort to the most straight forward prior examples, instead of putting their own style on the song as a Matt Chamberlain, Dave Abruzzese or Dave Grohl would. Then again, Dave Grohl joining the band later didn't really change this on later records. When I hear them compared to a throwback to something like Black Sabbath, I cannot disagree more. While they explore rhythm as Black Sabbath did, they lack the exploration of dynamics as a group, and they don't possess the charisma/voice of Ozzy Osbourne to keep the listener interested. Kind of just a middling exploration of rhythm at one volume. Now, having listened to this album again nearly twenty years later, I am struck by the banality of their sound. It is like they referenced all the best stoner rock bands without bringing anything of their own to the table. Lyrics are dark and eye-raising, but they feel like they lack a voice unique to QOTSA. What I mean by that is that they feel like could have come from any of the countless stoner bands from that era. There is no Cobain/Dylan/Gordon Sumner/Trent Reznor gems here. The titles of the songs are best thing going on this album, such as: "Mexicola", "Avon", "How to Handle a Rope (A Lesson in Lariat)", "These Aren't the Droids You're Looking For", "Hispanic Impressions", "Spiders and Vinegaroons" (Looked upon Vinegaroons and they look frightening as *#@!). Unfortunately the tracks with the most interesting names were usually the least interesting sonically and lyrically. The tracks I found most enjoyable were "Spiders and Vinegaroons", which has the most creative construction and sonic palette of anything on the album, and maybe "Mexicola" if I wanted something a bit more straightforward, then perhaps the creepy creativity of "I Was a Teenage Hand Model". Not sure why this album is on the 1001 album list. I think if you want to reference stoner/grunge albums of importance to the genre and music in general there are more than enough other albums by other artists that actually bring their own thing to the form than any of these QOTSA albums. Props to the band for the bravery of the album cover choice, both the original and the re-issue. It would be interesting if they would be so brave with the social climate as it is these days.
This album is 30 minutes too long. Someone in the reviews said Josh Homme is a Dollar Store Chris Cornell and I can’t not hear that. There’s some interesting riffs at times, but again too long.
There are definitive Nirvana Grunge influences here, but that's about it. The whole album sounds generic, as if some label's A&R desperately needed to find the next Nirvana. Compositionwise, this is as bland as it gets. 2/5
i had no clue what they were saying the entire time
Tedious and one note, actively had me watching to see how much longer this was going to last.
This album feels like such an early grunge knock-off. The only reason it’s not a 1 star is because of the small hints at originality towards the end of the album.
I did not like it. Grunge has never been my thing, and this album was just that. All of the songs sounded the same to me, and not a single one stuck out. The only reason this doesn’t get a 1 is because it’s still better than the stuff out today.
Showed the potential of what they would become, but honestly was pretty medium.
Heavy movie soundtrack vibes. Too male for my current tastes. Hard to hear any of the lyrics, which is usually the most important part of a song for me. Wouldn’t seek out but does have a good tone/vibe for putting on in the background or setting a specific mood if wanted.
It was alright. Lots of the same thing
AWFUL. Is this from 1998? Were these people living in a basement for 25 years? I didn't like this sound when it first came out and I like it less now.
If this were earlier on in this project, I might have given this a more generous review. As it is, after 848 albums, I didn't feel the need to listen to this again (fully admitting that I might have found that I liked it more). I liked this fine and didn't hate it whatsoever, but listening to it I just didn't feel that it was really worth my time today when I'm still waiting for Breakfast in America by Supertramp (among others).
Annoying. Long songs that shouldn’t have existed to begin with, and definitely not for as long as they did. Started off good, ended poorly
Grungy
Ugh.
Didn't hate, but didn't care for
Just noise
A very standard rock album. More instrumental than I thought it would be. Chord progressions are predictable. Much of the album is basically a jam session. However, it is well produced. Nothing really grabs me on this album. Every song sounds the same. Again, not sure how this one is considered one of the greatest of all time.
Interesting but not my genre.
I love QotSA but this is a demo.
I enjoyed it! I just prefer their other albums; really like the sound, it's just maybe too long for its songs to be this repetitive. but there are some good riffs and vocals, like on If Only. with a couple more listens it could grow a little bit more on me :D
Most memorable thing is the cover art tbh; unique song names but underwhelming sound
I know these guys are pretty well regarded, especially Homme as a guitar player. Not 100% sure what my expectations were, but I definitely did not expect it to sort of just be Butt Rock.
It's ok
Better than I expected. No real hits but enjoyable enough.
don't really like this band.
Það eru þarna 2-3 lög með stoner rock drungafílingnum sem ég elska við QotSA. Restin er því miður rúnk. Ekki gott rúnk. Heldur finnst mér þetta stundum tilviljanakennt og óklárað.
Skrýtin plata að velja. Allt í lagi rokk, en ekkert merkilegt að gerast. Er ekki að fara að hlusta á þessa aftur.
What a terribly boring and generic album... While listening to it, it seemed like no song really stand out. This definitely isn't my style. This album however has some qualities, including some very good musicians (especially liked the guitar solo in the sixth song, "The Bronze").
I'm sure there's skill here but man this is not my vibe. I want it tighter or looser or angrier or calmer. It sits in some middle that just doesn't connect with me. I can't imagine anyone wanting to start a band to sound like this. Instrumental of You Can't Quit Me Baby I did get into for a bit. They are skilled for sure, I'm just not sure what they're doing with it. The Spiders song has a good vibe. Maybe these guys should fire the singer and do soundtracks.
Rock that feels kind of flat and souless. To much of the album sounds the same. It's fine, but not for me.
😴😴😴 I wish ‘Songs for the Deaf’ was on this list instead. Or ‘Like Clockwork’ for that matter. I thought this was a snoozefest.
more interesting than I predicted, not as good as their later work [edit - downgraded on a second listen, dull and sludgy]
I thought I would dig this more but most the album was incoherent mumbling alongside slick, distorted guitar riffs. A couple good songs but an album I wouldn't pick up again.
I went to college in California in the mid-2000s, so I heard a lot of Queen of the Stone Age. I do not like Queen of the Stone Age. They were boring when I was 18, and they’re boring at 35.
I dunno. Whatever. Noisy? Not for me.
I feel like I should like Queens of the Stone Age but I just don't.
Meh
I've only ever heard more recent stuff from queens of the stone age and never loved it, but compared to this, those albums at least have some unique and interesting artistic qualities even if they aren't for me. the best words to describe this are boring and generic
My socks are still firmly in place. I never saw the draw of Queens of the Stone Age. It is serviceable rock.
Felt like unfinished and immature compared to their later albums.
I didn't like this one.
Tired of drum beat songs ☠️
Decent, but way too long. Just could never really get into QOTSA. 2.5/5
2.5 Not bad, but nothing stood out much either
Tries to do some really interesting things, but much of it just never lands. Lyrically strange, but not in a fun or compelling way. Musically wants to be innovative, but never fully commits to make it. 2/5 Won't listen again
Bit of chore to listen to, the reissue even more so since it's a revisionist version with "bonus" tracks sprinkled in instead being tacked on at the end---it was already too long, dudes.
I was bored almost the whole time. There were moments I felt were slightly redeeming but not many. I did think it was cohesive enough.
It's just not for me
Forgettable
Not much of a fan of 90s hard rock.
Did little for me.
I like Queen queen better than these queens. Not too bad however, I wouldn’t download anything
I like hair metal as much as the next guy, but this is just jerking off with guitars.
I liked the opening track a lot, but as the album goes on it just gets more and more one-note and flat
Josh Homme's voice isn't great on this album and it's not helped by the poor vocal recording quality. The music here isn't as good as on their future albums either. A couple songs are catchy but I mostly wished I was listening to Songs for the Deaf or Like Clockwork instead. This album is too long even without the unnecessary instrumental tracks. I had heard this before and didn't like it much - today's listen didn't change that.
I think I accidentally listened to this album on shuffle while cutting the grass. That has nothing to do with the rating but I was just confused when it ended with the last song being in the middle of the album. As for the actual album, it was alright. None of the songs really stood out to me. I wanted to like it because I like a few Queens of the Stone Age songs that came out later.
This is nothing special couldn't really get into any song.
Not it for me bruv
Yes, some of the guitarwork is very good, but too much of this US macho music for me, give me e.g. Ragte ATM of Husker Du anytime if you want good, energetic, aggressive music.
A fine record, but without a doubt a bad choice for a QOTSA album on such a list.
Nunca he podido entenderlos.
Boring ahh album
alright catchy cover
I was hopeful for this album but it was quite dull and interspersed with points of monotonous repetitions that went on way too long
Another album that has great instrumentals and is ruined for me by the vocals. It sounds like the vocals are turned down, combined with the lead singer mumbling a lot of the words and not being to understand him. That alone made me not very interested. VERY good instrumental though. Whoever the guitarist is was impressive.
Bit boring innit
Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: Yeah it’s alright, I find QOTSA rather lacklustre though considering that talent they possess with their members Favourite song: didn’t have one on this
Not for me. Some good beats and interesting riffs, but overall I thought it sounded like generic rock as chatGPT might imagine it. I stopped halfway through.
I think I liked their more experimental instrumental back end versus their beginning. At least that was more dynamic and less constant loud Some exceptions. I liked "If Only." That hit me in the right way I found a lot of the beginning / middle boring. Not turn off completely, just not fully onboard. Max told me that their later albums are much better and more popular— I think I’ll have to check those out after. 2/5
It's ok, pretty noodley. Sounds like Foo Fighters. Don't think I'll be returning.
dad rock
I really did not enjoy this. Gets a 2 for naming a song after vinegaroons.
Very nice debut album, a little drawn out and kinda all seems the same, for sure like other QofTSA better, and unfortunately not as much anymore but still a good album.
Not one of the good qotsa albums.
It wasn't bad, it just wasn't anything memorable. They were like a really watered-down version of Soundgarden, but with the same annoying guitar distortion on every song.
Curious choice. Not the most influential QOTSA album but glad they made the list I guess?
Fovourites: -Walking on the sidewalks -You would know -I was a teenage hand model
Average at best. Generic. 2.5/5
Important to listen to as it marks the start of mainstream rock becoming profoundly boring
Only the best in Butt Rock
After two attempts to wade through this dusty, grimy debut album, up to my eyeballs in post-grunge jam sessions and finding it all rather dull, I realised I’d been listening to an extended reissue from 2011, which came as something of a relief. Giving it the benefit of the doubt, I switched over to the 1998 original, expecting a tighter, less bloated listening experience. I was wrong. Even at 46 minutes, “Queens of the Stone Age” treads the same ground so much that anything beyond about six songs feels like a small eternity. For every tight, intriguing few seconds there are a few more minutes of stoned, indulgent wallowing. Homme’s riffs and song structures walk the line between hypnotic grooves and mindlessly repetitive, and it’s often difficult to pinpoint which side they land. After a promising start with “The Bends”—alike “Regular John”, Homme plays the same hand again… and again… and again. High-gain, power chords, mid-tempo thrashing, vocals sticking within narrow range while occasionally gliding into falsetto. Each song displays little range or movement, keeping to two or three riffs rinsed and repeated. This rarely feels engaging, with the exception of the best track of all: “You Can’t Quit Me Baby”. Despite being six minutes built around the same riff, there’s at least a bit of drama and scale to it. From the snare-heavy drum pattern to the spacey slide guitar breaks through to a climactic accelerando, it presents a clear build-up and pulls it off. On the other hand, a track like “You Would Know” is irritatingly stop-start without getting anywhere. Elsewhere, there are three minute guitar grade-book exercises (“Hispanic Impressions”), one note accents for a whole song (“Walkin on the Sidewalks”) and so on. Critics likening the band to Neu and Can for apparent motorik rhythms, seem to have somewhat missed the mark: while there are traces of the same grooves, there’s little here to indicate the same worthy technical proficiency, and- with the exception of “You Can’t Quit Me Baby”- even less of a knack to build atmosphere, tension or transport the listener. “I Was a Teenage Hand Model” is worthy of some kudos for introducing more diverse percussion, splashy synths and a muted dynamic into the mix… but ultimately it’s too little too late.
Ok we're picking this instead of one of the two good qotsa albums. Not listened to this one before. Avon I liked. Sidewalks descends into the 'just too long' hypnotic groove that Kyuss loved, and I did too. Look, it's a good sound they've got. Sadly the main problem here is there are way too few actual tunes. Kyuss has better tunes, maybe they'd run out at this stage. On Rated R they are straight out of the gate with the tunes, but sounded less like Kyuss and more like a new band with it's own sound. Which is probably how this should work. They seem like they're enjoying themselves though, so there's that.
The dirge-like jam 'Spiders and Vinegaroons' reminded me of Amon Düül II. Apart from that (and other experimental stuff towards the end), nothing really stuck out to me. The actual songs are all choked in dust.
It's not the kind of music I hear but not so bad.
I like what I've heard of Queens of The Stone Age and I also like Josh Homme's performance on Them Crooked Vultures' only album, so I expected to like this album, but it was kind of boring. Every song felt longer than it actually was. Maybe if this was a different Queens of the Stone Age album, I'd like it more. I liked the idea behind You Can't Quit Me Baby, but it's too long. My favourite song is You Would Know.
Not great, feels very generic
A little of heavier rock, didn't love it but about average overall
Maybe I just wasn't in the right headspace, but every song went on far too long. I think you're supposed to be stoned to listen.
I've heard of the name of the band Queens of the Stone Age, but the album was completely new to me. I did not enjoy this album. I'm not even curious to other music from this band.
Not their best work imo, 2.5
generic
I expected this to be a bit more interesting, as I know Songs for the Deaf pretty well. I was disappointed - quite a lot of it was forgettable.
Boring as hell, there were some solid tines every now and then though
Nothing remarkable
Seems ok. Nothing really special for me. 2.5
I am sure I've heard Queens of the Stone Age but I can't summon any songs to mind. For sure I've not seen the album art before. Opens up with Regular John which sounds very much of its time. Nothing particularly interesting about it but I've got another 13 (!!) songs to go...and meh. Stays evenly fine throughout. Not sure I really *needed* to hear this. 2.5
wasn’t that good, only enjoyed one song
I did not care for the album. I was familiar with the group. The lyrics are not good. Musically the guitars are overpowering and become distracting. There is no need to revisit this album.
Quirky, odd, not for me. There are a couple tracks that I enjoyed on this, but for the most part I didn't enjoy it.
This experience has been interesting for me - I tend to think of myself as someone who is open-minded, about music and most other things, come to think of it. But, to quote Dwight Shrute - "False". I'm beginning to think that there AREN'T 1001 albums that people should hear. Probably more like 50. I did not like this. It didn't hurt my ears like Linkin Park, or push some violent reaction button like what's his name from the other day (man, I hated that guy!), but it just sounded like another bland, mid/late nineties grunge wannabe. Not a catchy tune in the whole thing. Nirvana? Catchy as hell. Stone Temple Pilots? Catchy. Dishwalla - well, who doesn't love counting blue cars. Catchy! This? Nah. It's background noise for a flannel-wrapped house party over on State Street (and you know what the houses were like on State Street in Athens, OH). So I just don't have any reaction to it. It gets a big "meh".
Not crazy about this one HL: If Only, You Can’t Quit Me Baby August 28 2022
If aliens were to come to earth and ask to hear the most generic hard rock ever, this is what I would choose for them. They'd listen to it and go, "eh, it's okay I guess. Nothing wrong with it but it sure is generic." (Of course that would be in their own alien language but because they are so advanced they have automatic translator machines so we can understand them. They actually have 12 different words for 'generic' in their language.) So, yeah, I guess that about says it all. 2 stars.
Some of the guitar music was pretty good, but otherwise it was ho-hum.
Has some good songs, but its overall noise.
i got bored 😐
I found it all a bit the same. Same droning guitar, same drums, same weird lyrics.
Meh
Some bright moments otherwise long and a bit drab
Strangely hypnotic in places. This is possibly the only type of metal that I can stomach.
i rarely like no singing but i thought it was pretty good otherwise. it was just kinda boring. i’d give it a 5/10
There's definitely "a sound" to these guys - that propelling/droning doubled guitar power chords, combined with Josh Homme's almost laconic singing style. I've just never been able to figure out how much I like it. Well I'd yet to hear this debut album so here we go.... and yeah it starts exactly as I'd expect on the first cut "Regular John" Maybe this is a Josh Homme problem (or rather me with his work...). I listened to a lot of Them Crooked Vultures when that album came out and I loved it. Well...I thought I loved it. I wanted to love it. I realized I didn't love it. My problem is that even though the sound is kinda cool - like a hopped-up Black Sabbath - none of these are great *songs* at all. It just sort of reveals itself as a stoner wallpaper that looks weird and cool in black lighting but sometimes you just need to turn that stupid light off and want to see something interesting on the walls. And it just ends up being a bunch of detuned sludgy progressions that all meld into one another. Terrible analogy but I just want to leave the room. And if that's the point, ok great - achievement unlocked. I just wanted a few songs - any song - to really sink my teeth into, but absolutely none of them are memorable and before the end i just wanted it to finish already... 4/10 2 stars
Riff-driven metal, but the riffs aren't good enough. Too complex, jumping around a lot - a substitute for melody. A sort of prog-metal. I'd rather go back to fundamental pentatonics. Occasionally it comes close, but there are no classics here. Music for teenage boys only.
Has a very unfinished sound, almost sloppy. Needs more refinement
04/11/2022 It all sounds the same. Can't hear anything special that would lead me to coming close to classifying this as an all-timer album.
BORING.
Better than I feared, but I wouldn't consider it a must-hear album.
Actually really didn’t care for this. 4/10
I didn't really dig it. A little heavy for my tastes, and TOO LONG. I liked the cohesion though. I feel like each song managed to sound like the same band, while not all sounding like the same song. That was well done, but overall I just didn't really care for it.
2/5 nope
It doesn't get better or worse. If you like the first song you will like the album but if you don't stop because each song just blends into the next feeling like 1 long song. This album gets a solid MEH rating.
Basic 90s rock with way too many crappy sounding moments. I'm going to talk about songs that had moments I couldn't stand: You Would Know, Hispanic Impressions, You Can't Quit Me Baby, These Aren't the Droids You're Looking For, I Was a Teenage Hand Model. Annoying album. I'll give it a 2 because there were a few cool moments. I'm very sparing about giving an album a 1, but this one was up there. Or do I mean "down there"? Who cares. Next.
somewhat grungy, not really impressive nor energetic enough, kind-of depressive
These may not be the droids I'm looking for, and this ins't the album that I'm looking for, either. I didn't get the purpose of this song. Maybe I'm searching for too much. Who knows?
This was really close to hitting 3 stars, but it's just a bit too experimental at times and there's nothing that just find a great groove and energy i was able to get into. There are much more interesting QOTSA albums to listen to.
Ikkje heilt min smak
Meh
Very inconsistent album, some of the songs were great and some very pretty trash.
Expected something much better. The last song is very good, tho.
Grooves along well, then gets a bit repetitive and tuneless. A pick n mix band. Very cool man, that Josh.
I thought it was alright but then there came some songs that were too repettive and some that actually hurt my ears with the sound effects. Overall a background music kind of album, not really in a hurry to listen to it again. 4/10
Honestly, I keep mixing up these guys with Kings of Leon or (even worse?) System of a Down. I can't find anything groundbreaking or even memorable here. An album to forget the instant it stops playing.
It's not my styl.
Alright!
Love the sound of the distortion but the songs are pretty aggressively average
