Reviews (page 9 of 9)
Dull and repetitive
I didn't really dig it. A little heavy for my tastes, and TOO LONG. I liked the cohesion though. I feel like each song managed to sound like the same band, while not all sounding like the same song. That was well done, but overall I just didn't really care for it.
Flum-album som i och för sig inte är dåligt men som kanske skulle behövt en producent som styrde upp saker och ting.
decent stoner rock, but nothing special.
Classic rock sound that mostly blended together for me
The first song has an indie / garage sound which I'm sometimes good with but it reminds me of songs CFNY would play after it went downhill. While the first song was nothing to write home about, things quickly got worse. They sound like boring metal from over a decade earlier. To be sure, there is decent guitar playing but the "ham sandwich" comment from my Hüsker Dü review applies equally in this case.
1998 eh? A very riff-oriented, 70s feel. The singer sounds a bit like Ozzy at times. I was thinking after the first few songs they weren't as depressing and gloomy as the Seattle Bands, but then I changed my mind once I hit the one-hour mark. A 36 minute vinyl offering might have garnered an extra point.
First Listen. After listening to it several times, none of the songs stand out to me. Doesn't mean it is bad, it just needs more time for me. For now, I'll give it a 2/5.
bored i think.
Absolute sludge and I say that as someone who has quite liked QOTSA in the past.
I like some of Foo Fighters' stuff, and "No One Knows" by QotSA. This album didn't strike a chord with me though
Not so bad,
Queens of the Stone Age explore rhythm as a defining characteristic of rock music in greater depth than just about any band out there. In fact, there are times where it seems like rhythm is all they’re interested in. It makes for a whole host of riffs that get you bouncing, but songs that don’t live long in the memory. I guess it makes sense why they call it “desert rock”: it’s as samey and featureless as a desert landscape.
The first two tracks are soooooo boorrrrrring. This is the simplified song structures of punk, but slowed down and all the fun or edge taken out. its like a masonry wall or a piece of concrete that is just there. How To Handle A Rope connected with me. What the hell this sucked.
Queens of the Stone Age's debut album comes tantalizingly close to being good. Unfortunately, in almost every area, from songwriting to vocals to lead guitar playing, they fall just short. Unlike most contemporary rockers, QOTSA can actually play their instruments. Josh Homme is clearly capable of writing interesting chord sequences and rhythmic hooks, but he stops short of where he needs to go. These tunes are screaming for a little more instrumental interplay and a little more melodicism, but Homme insists on keeping everything skeletal and basic. Again, the songs demand a charismatic frontman with vocal chops, like Gavin Rossdale, but Homme's vocals are flat and thin. Finally, these songs cry out for a guitarist on the level of someone like Metallica's James Hetfield, but instead we get barely adequate solos. I mean, I wouldn't turn this off if I heard it on the radio, but listening to an entire album's worth of what sounds like unfinished demos that have the potential to be great with two or three more revisions and a better vocalist and guitarist is just frustrating.
I do absolutely love some QOTSA, but I'm not sure this was so up my street. I love the newer stuff I guess, more poppy and less heavy
Album art: 1
Not bad.
I've never understood the hype here. It's fine, but not mind blowing stuff.
I liked it for the first few tracks but it just keeps going on forever and it’s so repetitive. This album could be so much better if they cut 4-5 tracks and got it under 40 minutes.
Never liked QOTSA and this hasn’t changed my mind
Didnt really get into this one. It all sounded the same to me. I did enjoy the last 3 tracks though. I would pass on listening to it again.
Listened for the first time in years. Still a meh.
Van eentonig tot zelfs vreemd. Objectief gezien doen ze wel coole dingen met geluid. Één nummer apart luisteren zou ze misschien meer eer aangedaan hebben dan een heel album.
Too repetitive and stonery for me. Unpleasant sounds at the end of the last song.
It's decent but nothing special. The 2 albums they did after this were much better I thought
It's fine. 5/10
Pretty repetitive. Not very impressed
I didn’t enjoy this at all but I could tell it was competent.
An unknown band to me. The music did not tough me. I only liked one song a little bit. 'Spiders and Vinegaroons'. It had a nice bild up.
not my style
Stoner “robot” rock, langsom tung metal, Josh Homme
Otroligt menlöst. Kassa vocals, långa tråkiga låtar. Våga släppa loss, grabbar!
Not rlly my type
uncreative
lol This is the worst of the worst.
I can understand the appeal for some but this kind of preening, muscular, churning rock isn't my bag. In small doses, I could definitely like some of these tracks, but overall this album is not anywhere close to being a favorite of mine.
Not a patch on later albums and although some nice riffs the vocal lack here. Lyrics are poor too they have had somne good songs in the past non of which are on here. They are a rare band that have got better in time. There is no gloss or clean beats here just muffled chuggy bass and distorted guitars overshadowing vocals blending into one . One or two songs are okay but seems an album of fillers no stand out tracks really. Shame
Rate the album, not the band. Queens of the Stone Age are great, but this album isn't. Every other Queens of the Stone Age album is very good excluding this one. It's sound is repetitive and uninspired. Big whiff. Honestly, I don't know how you put this album up on this list and not their break-out third album Songs for the Deaf.
dnf
Didn't do much for me, I'm afraid. Uninspired production rather befitting of the material.
Boring commercial hard rock.
Feo, feisimo el album.
Nope
Josh homme gives off strong date rapist vibes. This all sounds pretty scuzzy to me, with not much variation between the songs. The sound is cool for a few measures but then stays in the same menacing register for basically the whole album. The whole thing is dour and dull and I feel like I’m at a party where there’s one really drunk girl and like six guys w Oakley sunglasses and barbed wire tattoos leering at her and I want to go home but I’m worried something bad is gonna happen to her
Malo, muy metal, sin embargo no era lo suficientemente visceral la voz, tampoco era muy melódica la voz.
nope
Tapped out by the second song. Just bland post-grunge garbage.
didnt like it
Fuck me - it’s just noise. Made it about half way but that included 3 or 4 skips after I started to twitch from the assault on my ears.
17 - Queens of the Stone Age - Queens of the Stone Age - Rating = 1 I don’t like this band. No interest. No.
No.
Ugh.
Impressive musicianship and tight rock grooves, but the cool, mechanical vibe doesn’t click for me. A few standout tracks, yet overall not my jam.
So generic. Could've lived a whole life without listening to that album and I wouldn't have missed anything.
I have never heard a so-called "stoner rock" album that wasn't just way too much of the most boring hard rock imaginable. (And yes, that includes Songs for the Deaf!)
Música de vago pretencioso
Sounds like a thousand other rock albums. Leave it in the 90s and don't look back.
I am 3 months into 1001 and I am concerned at the album choices. This instead of Songs for the Dead, Court and Spark not Blue, Innervision instead of Songs in the Key of Life, Agaetus Byrgum instead of Takk etc. Those albums may be included in the 1001 but these should not. This is poor for a first album - full of filler. First 2 tracks are OK in their playlist, but some rubbish ……

Not special
I have gotten to listen to many fantastic albums from this site, a lot of mediocre albums, and a few godawful ones. This falls into the latter category. The only track that was even remotely interesting to me was Spiders and Vinegaroons.
Mage my head hurt
No
Woooooow I love rock
getting through this album felt like trying to swim under water, it was way too repetitive
There better be another Queens of the Stone Age album on this list because this one sucked and I know there are good QOTSA songs
Tungt, mörkt, inte jättekul.
I really wanted to like this especially with the interesting experimental stuff in the latter half of the album but fuck I did not. I already didn’t like this style of riff heavy rock and this did not help. Also 1 hour is too long
So repetitive Worst Song:Hispanic Impressions Best Song: Avon, Mexicola Added to Liked Songs:
Good grief. I think I’d rather listen to a jazz album.
Ei ole yhtään kappaletta omaan makuun. Sorit siitä.
Hoo boy, another album I have heard absolutely nothing about and would never have listened to in a million, billion other lives. You have my full attention, Dimery. This is what it's all about. "Hispanic Impressions" is alright. The main guitar hook is catchy, even if the idiosyncratic nature of the music loses me as the track goes on. "You Can't Quit Me Baby" is also alright - the growling guitars add a gratifying floatiness to the music. "I Was a Teenage Hand Model" is alright from a melodic perspective, though the 5-minute runtime and lousy vocals kinda kill the appeal (not trying to backhand complement - it's among the strongest songs on the album). But man if this album isn't stretched out the ass to infinity and beyond. An hour is complete overkill for both a debut album and an album comprised almost entirely of instrumental pieces. Too much, too soon. It also doesn't help that this album features a lot of extremely repetitive guitar performances, which only become more grating as I get deeper into the music. I'm gonna say it: this is a nowhere album. If the tunes of this album were a location I would be stranded wandering along a run-down paved road in the middle of a vast dune, the sand blowing all across my body and the warm summer heat creating visible ripples in the view ahead. It's been an exceptionally long time since I last rolled out the "nowhere album" moniker, which makes this one a special occasion. But it's true. I don't think that this album earns a spot on the list when a million and one more-deserving albums got shafted. I'm curious to see the reasons for why this album made it onto the list. Dave Grohl is on this album. A lot of guest appearances. "Distinctive sound" (I disagree). Uh, yeah nah. This one's goin in the album shredder. Hasta la vista, Queens. Your cave or whatever kingdom you rule is mine now.
I could do that!
I found it utterly forgettable and bland rock. Somebody tell AI I've found some jobs it can take. 1/5
nope. never could jive w this band didn't even listen I am sorry I had to make an executive decision : )
I never listened to them much back in the day. There were so many bands in roughly this style that they got lost in the mix, although "I Was a Teenage Hand Model" takes a fun departure and feels more Beck-inspired, which I liked.
Tuntu tosi mitäänsanomattomalle.
Tbh did not love this. Lots of electric guitar doesn't guarantee a hit. Very repetitive.
2/10 This was a tough listen for me, just not my genre and struggled to pick out any redeeming qualities to individual songs. Actually listened to this on shuffle accidentally which is obviously complete sacrilege but I very much doubt an in-order listen would redeem it. Regular John gave me promise that the rest of the album would be palatable, with the vocals being right up my street despite the chugging guitars they are set to. Sadly, nothing else hit the same spot and even Regular John isn't really worth revisiting for me. Best songs: Regular John Listens: 1?
just no
Meh. Boring guitar, boring lyrics, just another rock band banging away and saying nothing much.
Wish Green Day, but without any melodies.
it’s bland and forgettable , where it tired to be more experimental it doesn’t hit for me
Boring. It’s not new, it’s not challenging it’s not even noodley and angering. It’s just nothing. I wouldn’t even want it as background noise.
Overall I thought this album was pretty good but also had some notable flaws. It was a very mixed bag, which was evident with the tracks from this track list that i did enjoy, the ones I didn’t enjoy and the ones I just felt neutrally or couldn’t make my mind up. There are some really powerful one and some really meh ones. Didn’t quite click with me but I’ll be sure to visit some of his other music after checking out Queen of Denmark.
Taking me 2 days to get through this. Unobjectionable 2000s rock but SO repetitive and derivative I was sat waiting for it to be over. 'Hispanic Impressions' was particularly insulting : clearly playing at being experimental but was uncreative and maddening. Sonically the instrumentals are fine but unremarkable, vocals are whiny. Honestly knocking down to a one because of the myriad of better and (emphasis on this one) MORE INFLUENTIAL albums that could be in its place. Just listen to nirvana instead I'm begging you
Not my thing
Did not finish. I don’t know if my stomach illness was just a coincidence, but I’m sure this didn’t help.
Interesting- and beautiful in parts. Maybe too early to decide whether it is a classic?
Hell nah
Lead singer's voice way too anonymous... Sounds like Kurt Cobain super light... And I don't even like Kurt Cobain 😂 Actually some nice melodies here and there, but I can't say it's really something special 1/5
Not for me :(
I mean. Not a very interesting or creative album for me. Redundant, repetititve and derivative.
One of the few albums that I didn't finish. Had enough halfway through the third track. At that point I knew that the best parts of this album were the silences between tracks. But that wasn't the interresting part, that was that after failing to complete this album I listened to one of my favorite albums The Language of Life by Everything but the Girl and just now I found out that today's album is Idlewild by Everything but the Girl another of my favorite albums.
Shit
BOR (and I cannot stress this enough) ING
Simply too harsh for me. I did not make it through the album.
Rock band with no songs I’m familiar with.
More generic rock No thanks
Didn't enjoy
1. regular john - 1 2. avon - 0 3. if only - 0 4. uualking - 0 5. you uuould knouu - 0 6. the bronze - 7. rope - 0 8. mezicola - 0 9. hizpanic - 0 10. quit me - 1 11. droidz - 0 12. the mule - 0 13. zpiderz - 0 14. hand model - 0
I think they were still stoned when this was recorded. That was a difficult listen.
Something interesting about this list project -- I totally perceive the standards for selection if I was alive/musically aware at the time. For instance, this shit sucks and it's boring, and I don't really have to dig into the vaults or study up my historical contexts to modify or support that point. Next!
As metallic as the Guns N' Roses album but without any memorable tunes.
What a terrible album.
Not a fan, sounded generic to me, this genre of rock isn't really my cup of tea. Didn't HATE it, but also nothing really stuck out to me
Too hard for me. I hate same chords played over and over and over.
Do not like this album. Can't even identify the genre.
Ziemlich lahmer Rock
Not my jam
I was never a fan, but I really tried to get into it this time. No joy. I don't feel any emotion from the music. I like the genre, and there's nothing technically wrong with it, but somehow I don't connect with it. I kept having to resist giving up and listening to something else.
Meh
Can't get behind this band.
Not good
Queens of the Stone Ages have never clicked with me. I just find it grating, and frustrating to listen to. There was some great guitar work in this record, and some nice songwriting, I can see the appeal of it. It's just not for me.
An ok sound but I’m not going to finish this album so it’s going to be a “1”
I was really looking forward to this one because I've heard good things about Queens of the Stone Age. All I can say is... meh. The riffs are repetitive. The songs are literally only 3 chords. All are between 120 and 140 bpm. And the lyrics are non-sensical. What is there to hold onto here? This album was boooo-ring!
Power chords for days. Super repetitive and just drones on. Singer doesn't even sound like he wants to be there, his voice is so sterile and emotionless. Had to take a break during this album and couldn't wait to finish.
I rather disliked this half assed attempt at being cool. It’s mostly noise that makes you want to skip to the next song
This band never had drive, it's shit with only one song in their carrier
It started quit well, but ended badly in my ears..
Complete shit. An old persons idea of what grunge is. Hated it.
You would think that a supergroup like this would produce blockbuster albums that shake the very foundations of music. In this case, you would be wrong. Boring, uninspired, and feeling like this was an Adam Sandler version of a music album leaves the listener frantically looking for something, anything - that resembles rock.
Not one for me I'm afraid, I see no reason for this to be on the list!
I guess this might be called post-grunge? I never got into grunge as it seemed to take all of the macho posturing of punk and none of the more interesting bits. So an after-the-fact version of that definitely is not for me. The band’s Wikipedia entry, which mentions "Krautrock and electronica influences”, makes them sound much more interesting than I found this album. Didn’t enjoy the backing, the lyrics or the voice, which doesn’t really leave anything here for me to admire. Stoner rock, nein danke.
Nothing new or interesting with this one.
Not listening to it. Can't stand to hear the voice of a man known for being agressive and abusive, sorry.
Hate them
Det var så oinspirerande. tråkigt och dåligt. visste inte alls att de var såhär dåliga?
The best thing about this album is that I will have forgotten about it by this time tomorrow!
Pretty good Reminds me of the early Radiohead actually. I take it back, this sucks balls Second half of "Spiders and Vinegaroons" is the only good thing on this album.
really? top albums?
Not to my liking
Have a hard time listening to grungier stuff
Meh.
Nota: 1/5. Se m'ha fet insopprtable. Potser tenia mal dia.
meh
Not my favorite mellow punk-grunge rock. Just not that entertaining.
