Lauper wills a debut album made up mostly of covers of songs written by men into a record that established her as a powerful voice for the independence and nuance of womanhood in an era where women were asserting themselves more and more in all facets of society. In the hands of an artist lacking her confidence and vision, this approach would surely come off corny or pedestrian or just plain bad. Not being familiar with her catalog outside of the hits, it’s the lesser known tracks that really showcase her talent on this album — she tries on lots of musical styles, fitting them into her mold and approach, one that helped usher in a more electronic pop-rock style that dominated the rest of the 80s. She sounds comfortable on pure ballads, synthy pop tunes, pub rock anthems, and songs that draw influence from punk, ska, and the NYC dance scene. Her infectious energy merges all of these styles into a record that is fun and danceable nearly throughout. Musically speaking, I love the female-male harmonies featured on most of the tracks. The sequencing makes it an enjoyable record to listen all the way through, and oddball moments like the second to last track that serves as a coda interlude before the final track is lovely. And she successfully pulls off a great Prince cover — honestly her and Prince could’ve made some great music together especially given they were good friends, but he served more as a mentor in the music biz than a collaborator in her career. Her influence on so many contemporary artists I love is self-evident too. Her unique vocal delivery and punk sensibility surely influenced the wave of women-centric indie rock, synth pop, and dance punk from the early aughts on. It’s hard not to mention Madonna here. They’re both living in NYC at the time, and this debut record dropped a few months after Madonna’s eponymous debut. Lauper is the rock/synth pop/singer songwriter counterpart to Madonna’s Danceteria club girl disco fueled record. Before these debut records of theirs in 1983, Lauper was in a prolific cover band while Madonna was clubbing in Manhattan. Madonna’s influence was always purely aesthetic imo: she had an incredible personal style and curated powerhouse trend setters to guide her music stylistically her whole career, but her vocal talents, song writing, and musicality by comparison was lacking. Lauper’s strengths were much more musical: she sits squarely in the singer/songwriter category, and her vocal range and delivery is one of her greatest assets. Exploring and researching this record sparked a huge interest in the synth pop of the time that I’m really enjoying at the moment. I’ve listened to this record a bunch over the last few days, and I’ve come to really admire her music.

Great pop album. Includes hits likt Girls Just Want to Have Fun and Time After Time. The vocal is a bit low in the mix on most tracks.

Thought I only knew one song on here, but I knew three! Who knew Cyndi Lauper had more than one hit? And Time After Time is a cool song, I just didn’t know it was her. I didn’t mind this album. I probably won’t listen to it in full again, but I will listen to some songs from now on a while so it’s a three for me.

This is so fantastically '80s and also uniquely Cyndi Lauper. It's a fun and timeless album. There has been none other like Cyndi Lauper, and I can't imagine there ever will be.

Strong start, it peters out at the tail end.

The hits on this were hits for a reason…but similarly the other non-hits are also that for a reason. It makes for a pretty uneven experience. The bad stuff is pretty screechy.

A seminal 80's pop record. "She's So Unusual" is an apt name for this album, as Cyndi Lauper doesn't sound nor look like your typical 80's popstar. Not to mention the new wave presence heard all throughout the album. It's quite the impression to leave on your debut album, and it's very effective. "Time After Time" is one of the greatest 80's pop/love songs ever recorded and stands the test of time. The rest of the singles deliver as well and the only potential duds are found near the end of the album. Best tracks: Time After Time, She Bop, I'll Kiss You

It’s a fun pop album. Cyndi has a unique voice, quirky, the arrangements are good. A lot of it still stands up 40 years later, obviously “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” and “Time After Time” but others too. And it has a bouncy song about wanking…

First 6 tracks are good, the last 4 not so much. So 6/10. Favs: Girls Just Want To Have Fun, Time After Time

80s synth pop. Pretty much what you'd expect, although not as insanely bubble gum as Girls Just Wanna would lead you to believe.

For me, this album aged well. Or maybe it was just revisiting my teen years.

Apart from the hits, I don't care to hear these songs again. Even the hits, I could go without ever hearing them again and not notice.

Cyndi Lauper sure made some good earworms back in the day. Love it or hate it, those singles are infectious. And the whole album is also surprising. It feels like the moment when New Wave finally abandoned its post punk roots and took off as 80s pop music. It's a lot better than I expected. On a side note, being a Weird Al fan as a kid introduced me to a lot of music but some songs just never recover his parodies. Cyndi Lauper is a strong example for me and it's hard to take it seriously now. Sorry Cyndi.

80s pop is not my thing, but I have always had a soft spot for Cyndi Lauper. Funky personality, great unique voice and some of her songs are really good (Time After Time). It's not all genius though, and I don't think, overall, that it's more than a 3 for me in terms of musicality, But a very good 3!

What a banging set of pop tunes.

Fun but some of the sounds (synths, laupers voice at times, and overall 80s production quality) were a little grating and some of the songs blended together. Girls just wanna have fun is one of the most well-deserving hits of all time. It hasn't left my head since and I still groove to it even though it's just playing in my mind. The 80s is one of if not my least favourite decade because of the sound of the time. But this was an exception.

Time After Time is a great song. Rest ok too 3/5

A very nice 80s pop album.

I hate to admit it, but this rocks. I'm always the first to complain when "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" comes on, as I find it overplayed and silly, but the full album made me appreciate Cyndi Lauper more. Her singing quirks drive me insane after a while though, so I'll only listen to this when I'm in a good mood.

I remember disliking Girls Just Wanna Have Fun came out because Cyndi Lauper seemed like a Madonna copycat, but she’s so much more than that. A solid 80s pop album.

It's a 5 based on the singles alone - with the filla not being too bad either (other than He's so unusual which sucks). Absolutely love girls just wanna have fun - it triggers this weird 80's Americana nostalgia vibes within me. Good times. Shame the song from Goonies not on this album.

“Girls Just Want to Have Fun” is one of my all-time favorite songs. It makes me so happy. If you were somehow able to measure how much joy a song has given me per minute listened over the course of my lifetime, it might take the top spot. If I’m at a wedding and just took a bite of my steak dinner, and the DJ plays “Girls Just Want to Have Fun,” I get up and dance for the next four minutes while my food gets cold. “Time After Time” is the other classic on this album. Beautiful song. And “All Through the Night” is a great pop tune too. The rest of the album leans toward new wave and it’s solid all around. Fantastic album cover. I could frame it and hang it up.

I love how this album starts. The band strikes an excellent initial fun and energetic entrance, and then Cyndi Lauper's voice pierces through like a trumpet soloing on top of an orchestra. When the chorus of this first track lands, I'm already thinking about how this sound is so perfectly 80's; how so many other choruses and songs and acts all borrowed from this idea. "Time After Time" for me is one of those songs where when I start to hear it, I get stopped in my tracks and get a rush of warmth and nostalgia and just a bunch of feelings. I don't necessarily attach it to any specific moment(s) in my life, but it's just so good that I have to pause and appreciate it. In 1995 she performed it live on Howard Stern's radio show with a dulcimer and a basic Shure $100 SM57 mic. She has a violinist and an organist with her too, but this simple setup leads to one of my favorite performances of any piece of music ever. I don't know when I heard it first (I was 5 at that time so probably it was years later), but it was my first time hearing her and being like "I like this music". The climactic moment where she sings the high harmony "I will be waiting" is pure art magic. I really adore the lyrics of "Time After Time", they are simple and profound and I think that those are often the lyrics that resonate the most with me. More approach-ability and less verbosity for the sake of complexity. I love the visual imagery throughout with her weaving in and out of problems with the pace of a relationship and how it connects to time and an actual clock next to her bed. Thinking about a list of the most quintessential 80's songs, "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" is near the top. It's the sound of 80s energy, it's so lyrically apt for the 80's, and it must be one of the songs that the everyday person thinks of when they think of 1980's music. It's an amazing song and one of the most fun songs ever. "When You Were Mine" is a super underrated bop as well. I covered it with my friend Jake for a birthday party concert a few years back. There's nothing quite like getting to know a song by learning all it's ins and outs. "She Bop" is also a standout track that is easily forgotten about. I love this album art. I've written before on this list about how I love when album artworks captures some kind of "moment in time", and this is a great example. It's the early 1980's, fashion is starting to explode into crazy saturations, music is starting to shed it's warm timbres in favor of sharper and edgier synthetic sounds, and everything feels a bit more vibrant. I've gone back and forth about this being a 4 or a 5. At first I thought it was a strong 4 as I knew it had "Girls Just Want to Have fun", and then I noticed that this album also has "Time After Time" on it. For me, those tracks along with "She Bop" and "When You Were Mine" are just too good to not be a 5.

Quintessential 80s sound, sounds to mainstream for me

Time after time is a pop classic, but it stands out more because a lot of the rest of this album is feeble

Some good tracks and at times a great vocal performance, but there's a fair bit of filler on here and some of the tracks are a real mess (yeah yeah).

Nope. Never liked her and this album has just cemented my belief. Her high pitched voice just grates and when she sings powerfully it almost as if she is shouting. I am sure there are worse albums out there so I will still give it 2*.

It’s okaaaay, I wish this was out of ten so I could go right in the middle with 5. I wanted to give her more points for covering Prince but Spotify says she gets nearly twice as many listeners a month and that made me angry. Sorry Cyndi

Cyborg Lauper 🌟 🌟 🌟 Despite the excitement of finally having a female artist on this list, my initial reaction to seeing CL come up wasn’t that positive! She always felt like someone who had released a couple of timeless singles, but was more of a 80s fashion icon. I always found ‘Girls just…’ so annoying as a child, probably because I was a 6 year old boy. Re-listening it’s hard to argue with the quality of that song. ‘Time after time’ sounds even more majestic. The rest of the album? Highlights: THE HITS - I stand corrected! It’s much more synthy and new wavy than I expected. ‘All through the night’ - synth powerhouse banger Lowlights: ‘Witness’ - pop reggae 😣 ‘Time after time’ - adds nothing to an incredible song ‘He’s so unusual’ - too bloody quirky for my liking

Very enjoyable. A couple of classics on here. “Time After Time” is such a great song. The whole album has a very 80s MOR rock sound, that although dated I feel is kind of creeping back in fashion and I actually quite like. The second half flags a bit but an enjoyable listen.

Bit torn with this one. Slight rebellious 80s MTV album. Not a fan of her voice or those synths or 80th reverb drums. But she's more interesting than Madge.

Bardzo przyjemny album. Primo - Lauper ma bardzo oryginalny głos. I robi z nim bardzo ciekawe rzeczy. Pod względem takiego bardzo dziwnego i niestandardowego wykorzystania głosu przypomina mi trochę Kate Bush (oczywiście to zupełnie inne style i style, ale taki vibe pokręconej laski mi się kojarzy; choć krótkimi momentami nawet podobne barwy mają). Secundo - jej piosenki są zróżnicowane. Cyniczne "Money Changes Everything", zadziorne "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun", nostalgiczne i smutne "When You Were Mine", dosyć futurystyczne "She Bop" i "Witness", które uderza w ska. Lauper jest na tej płycie bardzo wielowymiarowa - na zmianę silna i wrażliwa, zabawna i poważna. Silnie przebija przez ten album jej osobowość. Eksperymentuje ze swoim głosem i stylami, bawi się. Czuć młodzieńczą energię w tych utworach. A przy tym naprawdę spoko się tego słucha. Drugi odsłuch (w trakcie pisania tej recki) świetnie podszedł pod krzątanie się po chacie i porządki.

Mocne 4. Różnorodne kawałki, dobre teksty, w ogóle sporo zabawy tekstem i formą. Udało się Lauper pod przykrywką muzyki rozrywkowej przemycić wiele własnej osobowości i przemyśleń nt. roli kobiety w społeczeństwie - wyobrażam sobie, że płyta mogła być bardzo ważna dla kobiet w czasach, kiedy wychodziła, dodawać im pewności siebie, "emancypować". Normalizowała przy okazji takie elementarne (raczej) dziś kwestie, jak prawo kobiet do odpierdalania i frywolnej zabawy, masturbacji itp. itd. Charakterystyczny głos, muzyka wpadająca w ucho. Na pewno kawał historii i ważna płyta, nie tylko z kobiecego punktu widzenia :)

Kanon muzyki rozrywkowej. Produkcja albumu, bogata w syntezatory, gitarowe riffy i nietuzinkowe aranżacje, idealnie wpasowuje się w estetykę lat 80., choć miejscami wydaje się nieco przestarzała. Płytka jest żywiołowa i pełna osobowości. Zupełnie odwrotnie od Go-Go's Słabe 4

Enjoyed it. Fun album with an almost old-school rap amount of skit flavor. Which is perfect. I love how unserious it is. Her voice is great and the music is fun.

Blasting Time after time on my headphones, fully suited walking into my corporate job made me feel like Patrick Bateman! I really enjoyed it but then there are parts that annoyed me more. I’m not much of a new wave guy and I can’t get into it as much as I’d like. 3/5

I didn't think i would enjoy this as much as I did. That being said I preferred the first half of the album over the last couple songs. Still really good overall! Looking forward to any other Cyndi Lauper albums on this list

Her voice is phenomenal. The production is horribly dated, but back then it sounded (temporarily) fresh. More than just the one or two hits, there are quite a few great songs here.

Easy 5-star!

I really enjoyed listening to this, as a gen Z person who has only heard her biggest hits (both of which I would have struggled to attribute to her). This reminds me of no doubt (with less ska, I suppose), and I found myself getting really into it (taken out only by some questionable baby voices on the side of my ear)

I really want to like cyndi but it’s something about that voice that I don’t like. Time after time is a banger because she’s not yelling in that one lol. But it’s obviously a very big milestone in fashion and sound. Didn’t know she had made a cover of Prince or vice verse.

This is #day109 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and... here's to full-on 80s, right? Everything about this record is iconic, starting with the artwork, continuing with the new wave synth-pop-rock vibes, the production, and vocals. And let's not forget the mood it creates. While "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" is the obvious hit, this album is packed with singles and outright classics, such as "Money Changes Everything," "She Bop," and many more, each shining a neon light on the era's spirit. A true snapshot of the 80s. This is another solid 4 out of 5. Looking forward to #day110.

Aside from the couple of classics on this, I just really don't connect with it much. Her voice is a bit grating to me so hearing it for this many songs in a row got old. The tech-y musical notes were fun and so very 80's though. 3.5

Another surprise. I had assumed I wouldn't enjoy this album. Thought it would be Girls Just Wanna Have Fun plus filler. How wrong I was. The opener is great. The sound is 80s but not completely cheesed out. I am impressed.

Chappell Roan for ‘80s kids (complimentary to Cyndi Lauper, discriminatory to Chappell Roan). I hope this review ages poorly, because while the many highs on She’s So Unusual hold up, its lows are…strange. And I think Midwest Princess has a similar problem, even if I also really like it 🫢🫢🫢

Once you get past the fact you've heard half of these songs a billion times, there's a lot of great songs here. They're catchy, well written, and fun. Definitely worth a listen.

Yet another album that I can't properly be relied on to rate fairly. I always liked Cyndi Lauper, still do. It is fun, sometimes even moving, not so 80's that it is dated, but nevertheless ICONIC as such. Actually she is a good example of the second kind of 80's music I tried explaining on a review here once. It is not "oh that is so 80,s it is 'stuck there'" She is 80's by name and fame but a lot of her music is rather more timeless and some of her songs, even on this very album, remain in my favorites list. This is worth listening too, even if it is just for fun.

If you can get past the familiarity, the hits on this album are so freakin' good. They're played a lot, but I think it's so well deserved. The music itself is really fun and a bop on its own, but then her voice takes everything to another level. She's so incredibly vocally talented. The end and fade out of "Money Changes Everything" is a prime example of her talent. The non-hits on the album are still bops but are just good and not great. Still a very fun album to listen to from beginning to end. Favorite Song(s): Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, Time After Time, All Through the Night

Surprise 4/5! If you put the 80s production/sound to the side, this album has some great songs and the rest are good. They don't necessarily all sound the same either. A great pop album for the era!

Two big hits that are great pop songs. The rest is just mindless at best, and incredibly annoying at worst, like the final combo of “He’s So Unusual” and “Yeah Yeah” - some of the corniest vocal affectations make these tracks almost unlistenable. 2.5/5

Maybe it was the Monday blues, maybe I’m a musical genius, but I thought that all the songs were sort of similar. She was shrieking as if X-ray spex was toned down and put onto a pop record (of course, this is no criticism of poly styrene xoxxo) but I was not a huge fan - not even girls just wanna have fun could cheer me up

Još jedan album iz mladih dana 😁 I album kojeg znam napamet. Apsolutna kraljica od žene! Jedna od onih što jebe mame i ne da se zajebavati, pogotovo u muškom društvu. Ovaj album mi je isto baš onako tinejdžerski, topao, zabavan, iako je zapravo pomalo ekscentričan, kao i ona sama. Najdraže stvari su mi She Bop, ali ne zato što je oda masturbaciji (fan fact, tko još nije znao 😂), All Through The Night i When You Were Mine. Ali naravno, i hitovi će uvijek biti hitovi s razlogom. Opet, smatram da je apsolutno zasluženo mjesto na listi, iako moram priznati što se duže bavimo ovim projektom to mi je teže ocijeniti jer imam osjećaj da uspoređujem kruške i jabuke (isto mi je jučer bilo s Bon Jovijem). Ovo mi je generalno za 4, ali u usporedbi s jednim Coltraneom ili Beatlesima bi sigurno bilo niže. Still, pošto pokušavam izolirati slučajeve, reći ću 4/5 ili 8/10.

8/10 Nikad nisam (!) poslusao ovaj album u komadu ali na svoje iznenadjenje, znam vecinu stvari s njega. Prve 4 stvari su mi mini-remek djela 80s pop muzike, koliko god ova dva hita bila isfurana, meni su i dalje draga. Originalno Princeova, When You Were Mine mi je najdraza, skroz je super u njenoj izvedbi i bas mi odgovara njenom opusu. Witness mi isto ima bas zanimljivih instrumentalnih momenata, a zadnje tri stvari me nisu nazalost toliko osvojile. Svejedno, za prvi solo album imati 4 super uspjesna singla je ogromno postignuce. Album je jako krenuo pa mi u drugom dijelu malo gubi tu žar s pocetka ali generalno dosta kompaktan, tight album s glavom i repom.

Geez, I love this album so much. I've loved it since my Dad got it when it came out in 1983, and I love it now. I was also a big wrestling fan as a kid, and the Cyndi Lauper/Capt Lou team-up was all a kid could ask for. Is it perfect? No, I find the last 3 songs on the album are definitely the weakest. However, I'm still giving it 5 stars, one for each hit on this album, +1 for the wrestling connection. :star::star::star::star::star:

iconic and legendary

Cyndi Lauper just wants to have fun and it shows on this album. A solid debut from this iconic singer. She’s such a foil to Madonna in my mind - less serious, more willing to be part of the joke.

Really? Do you need a review for this album. It's quirky, fun, party music with just the right touch of pathos. I mean, Girls Just Want To Have Fun is on this album. A versino of Prince's When You Were Mine done in the least Price way is on this album. The sad and soulful Time After Time is on this album. The ever so slightly dirty She Bop is on this album. This was an enourmous hit when it came out in 1983 fueled by the party atmosphere in clubs and MTV in general. Even today, Girls Just Want To Have Fun is a staple of anything 80s plus alt-rock stations. Teenagers today still listen to it and Time After Time shows up in Rom-Com movies. I could go on by why? You all know this album and why it's great.

This just felt kind of nostalgic for what my mom would have playing in the car during ling road trips.

Ok! So I was super cynical when I first saw this was my album of the day. I don't have much familiarity with Cyndi apart from the obvious songs. But I thought, Cyndi Lauper, of course she's on this list, she had two popular songs and they had 1001 album book to fill. There's no way this album has made the cut. Now, I'm not saying this blew me away but...it wasn't as bad as I was anticipating. Did I have to hear it before I died, no. But, it's true 80s synth pop rock, and it was pretty fun. Who knew that Harry Styles was clearly inspired by She Bob for his song Cinema! In all, not an awfully bad album, voice is irritating and I don't think I'd run to listen to it again in full but hey, it was ok!

I wasn't mad on Cyndi at the time, but now completely get what she brought (and brings) to the picture. Great pop tunes with attitude, and thoughtful lyrics. A satisfying album.

One of the best pop artists of the 80s (and WWE Hall of Fame snubee) Cyndi Lauper killed it with this record. A terrific blend of pop catchiness and tenderness, this album perfectly encapsulates all of Lauper's strengths to a tee. Overly enjoyable but nothing on here was great and capable elevating the album to anything better than "just good." This was a 3.5/5 at its absolute best.

Being the first time I have ever heard this in its entirety, I found it pretty enjoyable. It's a solid 3.5 for me. The last 4 tracks were definitely leftover filler tracks judging by how good the front of the album was. Well produced and slick catchy songs even decades later.

Listener feedback graphs show a staggering 83% desire to switch to literally any other song within 45 seconds.

Only ever heard Time After Time and Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, never the rest of the album. Now I associate Time After Time with Parks and Rec. It is a very good ballad. He's so Unusual is out of left field, it sounds like it's from a musical from the 50s. Yeah Yeah sounds like a B52s song.

Really fun pop album, plenty of variance in style to keep it fresh. Not a super cohesive thing, but a nice collection of bops.

It's not quite a 5, but it's pretty damned close. After a week long streak of sad indie music and folk, this was so bright and sparkly. I absolutely loved it.

Wanted to like it, but, meh.

Pleasantly surprised by this one. Was expecting the usual 80’s album dirge but actually there were a number of pretty good songs. Not particularly my scene but a lot better than other similar offerings from that time. Definitely a couple of songs I may even revisit again if in the mood for some decent 80’s tunes. Album tailed off a bit towards the end though. Close to a 3.5 album this one.

This was like a trip down memory lane for me. I recall driving around with my young daughter in her toddler seat, trying to sing along to she bop. I enjoyed this, mainly because of the memories that brought back. But it’s very typical of 80s music that I’m not particularly fond of. Even so, I’ll give it a three.

my reaction upon seeing that my generator refreshed and chose this album was LET'S FUCKING GOOOOO and it turned out to not be an overstatement. i think it's pretty fair to call She's So Unusual one of the quintessential albums of the 80s pop music scene. standout track is All Through the Night, i've listened to that song pretty regularly for a while now. i do think the album slows down a bit right after that song and it kinda shows in the difference in spotify plays lol, but the first half is STRONG!!!! so for that reason, i dub it a 4/5 ❤️ cyndi lauper went OFF

She’s So Unusual Interested to hear this, I love Girls Just Want To Have Fun and Time After Time, classic 80s pop songs and they still sound great despite their ubiquity. Money Changes Everything is a great little new wave-ish synth pop song. I’m not familiar with the original but it’s a great opener with a nice drum sound and melodica solo. When You Were Mine does sound like a Prince song, but it suits her brilliantly well and I love the synth and guitar arrangement, the sound and overall feel. With Girls and Time After Time that is a great opening 4 songs, energy and excitement along with some genuine tenderness. She Bop carries that one too with a great 80s sounding synth and drum groove and All Through The Night is also a great song, with an excellent 80s shimmering falling synth. Witness is good, but maybe a little dip from the previous songs, but it does have a pleasing Ska effervescence. I’ll Kiss You is a great upbeat bit of polished angularity, with a nice dip into the softer pre-chorus. Has a slight B-52s vibe. I hate He’s So Unusual. But Yeah Yeah is great, a nice closer with great energy and I love that organ. It’s a great, fun listen, upbeat, infectious with a generous helping of fizzy quirkiness, but with a bit more depth and edge than you might expect, and with a couple of all time classics in Girls and Time after Time. This album is Cyndi Lauper's legacy. Besides the title track from the follow-up album, TRUE COLORS, I imagine if anyone thinks about Cyndi, they're gonna think about this album--and its big hit more specifically. From the quick overview I did, it just seemed nothing else she did (besides "True Colors") could really ever compare to how big and explosive her debut was. Which I don't think is a bad thing, entirely. Like, if you're gonna have a legacy, this album is a pretty good one to have. For one, as overplayed as "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" may be... It's still "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun". It's one of the biggest and most iconic songs of the 80's, and not for no reason. It's huge, it's anthemic, and, dammit, it's just plain fun. And "fun" is the word I'd apply to the rest of this album. Sure, it's all pure bubblegum. No one's suggesting you should live off of it. Take it from someone who chews a lot of Juicy Fruit, though: it's really tasty gum. Produced in the most superbly 80's New Wave pop kinda way. Lauper sounds like she's having an absolute blast recording this thing. Add on top of that a pretty good of my favorite early Prince single... Honestly, I have a hard time thinking of any negative points I feel worth bringing up. Maybe the fact that "He's So Unusual" is hard-right panned? And then in that same ear on "Yeah Yeah" you've got this squeaky Harley Quinn voice? And "Witness" might be the weakest song? I'unno. None of that makes me want to give this album any less than a 5, anyway. It's just fun, and that's all I, a girl, want.

I’m at a very fun 5. I’ve known Cyndi Lauper was good – Girls Just Want to Have Fun & Time After Time are quintessential 80s tracks. I didn’t know she was this good. The first 6 tracks on this one may well be all-timers, even if 3 of them are covers. Money Changes Everything surprised me, mainly because I was fully expecting the tone of this album to follow the poppier synths of Girls Just Want to Have Fun, but she pulls off that Springsteen-esque style really fucking well. Her vocals get one hell of a showcase, and it sets the tone that this album doesn’t have to be all bubblegum and sunshine. Jumping ahead, the When You Were Mine cover is pretty damn good too. She Bop is pretty fun, but I couldn’t quite place why I liked it so much. Just catchy as hell. All Through the Night is the emotional peak of the album, and I’m genuinely stunned it wasn’t the last track on the album. Beautiful, beautiful track that I’d never heard until listening through this, but it stunned me. The album sort of falls down after that – Witness & I’ll Kiss You are both really fun with their own neat production tricks and stylization quirks, but after All Through The Night, they just sort of pale by comparison. The last two tracks are where it just sort of stumbles to a finish line – the Betty Boop stuff didn’t click as well with me for a sort of feminist-driven album and just felt backwards, and Yeah Yeah has a great transition, but the rest feels like it was produced super early on in the album, and Cyndi just didn’t want it to go to waste. Either way, those first 6 tracks are so fucking good they deserve a 5 on their own, and the album doesn’t collapse so badly as to drop it any lower. When I think of 80s pop and 80s synthwork, this sort of soundscape is exactly what my brain thinks of. To hear it fully encapsulated and properly executed throughout an entire album of the era feels super satisfying, and it certainly helps that most of the tracks are about as catchy and fun as I was hoping for. It’s an incredibly easy 5 for me, even if it does sort of stumble down towards the end. I really, really enjoyed that.

ok'ish pop

I honestly wasn't looking forward to she's so unusual all that much. Cyndi Lauper's voice, whilst very distinct, can sometimes grate on me depending on what she's doing. However, the album is generally quite catchy, and I didn't even find her hit songs to be too annoying to hear for the umpteenth time in my life. Her voice still grated on me I some songs, especially the little cheer things she likes to do. Surprisingly enjoyed All Through the Night and When You Were Mine. Her music is obviously very 80s, but not generic sounding for the time.

I know as a man, this probably isn’t targeted towards me, but I mean it’s starting with a song that would have a 10am slot on a light rock radio station. Money changes everything. I wish it changed the chorus. I’ve never heard this next song. Girls? Having fun? Nah I’ve heard this song actually. In every gas station, roller rink, shopping mall, grocery store, dentist office, tv show, bus depot, and terrorism hostage video since I was born. It’s not for me. I actually don’t hate this one. It’s got that sort of melancholy 80’s tone that appeals to me at times. It’s kind of nice to start. Although the lyrics are dumb and again the repetition is just so gratuitous. It wears out its welcome. Pass. Every tv/movie prom scene ever. Man this album had the hits. Again, what can I say? I hate this song. I really don’t understand the appeal. It’s pop. Is this supposed to be a “great work” like the Beatles stuff we’ve heard or even fun like Boston? These are driving to work radio ballads that are kept on low volume. OH GOD MAKE IT SHE-STOP. This is BRUTAL. That chorus is poison. What is happening. Is she drunk? Off kilter schmaltz with garbage lyrics. Nah. Reggae guitars. The worst genre of music ever to exist seeping into an already bad pop album. This is a mess for me. This one sounded kind of interesting for a second. Kind of driving and cool, but it just devolves into her vocals and other garbage. The weird techno driving is a little cheesy and dated but better than literally anything on this album. Guys. This is kids music. Is this comedy? I’m embarrassed to be listening to this. It’s all too dumb. The lyrics are childish and rote. This album is not good. I get that people have fond memories or really like dim, catchy pop music. Hey I like dumb stuff, but please don’t attempt to make it high art. It’s dumb. End of story. This was unlistenable and made me feel embarrassment, misery and eventually anger that my Spotify algorithm has been ruined by allowing mainstream nonsense to be played. 1 HIGHLIGHTS: None

As a pop music fan I felt I had to choose between Cyndi Lauper and Madonna. It wasn't even close. I just love this album. No doubt I've heard it hundreds of times. I know every note of every song and enjoy it every time I hear any of them. Great vocals...fun vibe...awesome tunes...great memories. I also recommend the early album from her pre-solo years band Blue Angel...great tracks from the early 80s NYC Rockabilly scene.

Some great songs and unusual voice, which is a bit 'marmite'. 'Time after time' is utterly faantastic, but 'When you were mine' doesn't compare well to the prince version.

Hot Garbage

She’s so talented. It’s no surprise she was top of the charts. She had a great voice! And she was backed by good songwriting and studio work. But her fame faded quickly. Maybe getting involved in the pro wrestling scene diluted her credibility? Can’t be sure. But after listening to the album and hearing not only the hits but the great singing that didn’t get airplay it’s disappointing that her career was fairly short.

Objectively a great 80s pop record. Sadly I can only take so much of her voice. The hits have been played to death on the radio even still today, but that speaks to this album's influence in today's music.

I think without Cyndi Lauper that we would have never gotten to the same acceptance of women (and men) who are quirky, a bit different, and frankly, fun. I remember what it was like to grow up in the Regan era, so many of us felt like outcasts, it was always affirming when someone who was an outcast or a rebel got exposure for their art. I particularly like her version of "When You Were Mine", a fantastic Prince song which she does very very well.

It’s Cyndi Lauper, and most of the songs you’ve already heard by her. There’s some interesting synth parts here in there in parts of songs, but nothing stood out too much aside from the hits. Maybe I should give it a second listen to focus more on the instruments, but Lauper’s voice is a little too much (sweet? aggressive?) for me after about 3 songs. Good for Lauper from rising from the ashes of music industry bullshit and coming out with this album. I’m sure it’s still making her some money.

Is it blasphemy to say that I think this album is really overrated by most of the reviewers here? Sure, Cyndi Lauper was a far-reaching, flamboyant act that spoke to millions of music lovers (especially teens) in the 80s – but is her music really as good as her legacy suggests? Maybe not. Lauper's vocal, while powerful, quirky, and memorable, does not provide good material for an album's worth of music. After the first 20 minutes or so, her voice starts getting a bit abrasive – and of course you're only halfway through the album at that point. Combined with the overactive synths, electronic drumbeats, and backing vocalists, we have a product that's very much larger-than-life and a little exhausting to follow completely. But Lauper's music is a goshdarn fun time, I'll give it that. It's impossible to hate this woman. 3/5 Key tracks: Girls Just Want To Have Fun, Time After Time, All Through The Night

Cyndi Lauper's debut album She's So Unusual start with a heavy punchy drums on `Money Changes Everything` to continue with the World known Hit song `Girls Just Want to Have Fun`. The style is set and the quality of the production alone is worth the listening. The album is pretty good overall, with a small dislike for the 2 ending title.

I'm well familiar with this album, it was in the clubs and all over the pop radio stations in the 80s. This one had to sell a bajillion albums back then, it had quite a few songs that charted. I think "She Bop" is the one I liked the best.

Pure 80s pop bliss. So many of these have stood the test of time, and are an essential part of any soundtrack for any media set in that decade.

It's a fun classic however sometimes the vocals get a little whinny. With the power in her vocals this is a shame.

What a fantastic and nostalgic album. I've always loved her unique vocals and spunky attitude. I didn't own this album, but I did have Twelve Deadly Cyns. I can't wait to see her live in a couple of months...it'll be a childhood dream come true.

Cyndi Lauper can definitely rock. This one was a lot of fun. I love the energy, the excitement. It's catchy as hell and I appreciate that it doesn't take itself too seriously. After all, not everything has to be profound. Sometimes it's good to just have fun. I always find albums like these interesting where there are a couple of massive hits and then some songs are pretty much unknown. I actually enjoyed the unknown songs as much as the hits. I especially liked She Bop.

Going into this album, I knew it could go one of two ways: either a sleazy 80’s bubble gum pop album or an 80’s pop album with substance and quality. Thankfully, it was the latter. Although this is definitely an 80’s pop album aimed at the same crowd as Madonna, Cyndi Lauper approached it with a more mature touch. I was surprised by how heavily it leaned into new wave and synth pop, which I think made it more acceptable to people like me. Cyndi Lauper found a good balance, making an album that can reach a wider age demographic. Overall, this is a very colorful synth pop album, and it will definitely be added to my list of 80’s synth pop albums I enjoy.

Cindy Lauper's voice is annoying. Music is 80s bubblegum pop. "Time after Time" is the only decent song.

Inventive and catchy, doing a lot with just a few chords and rhythms. Lauper's album is quirky and endearing. Enjoyed the two listens. 4/5!

eh I like Girl Just Want to Have Fun, and Time after Time is just there, the rest were meh, but even those are not stellar to me

Ok, but hard to listen to all at once. Her voice can grind a little. Still good for it’s place in the 80s though.

Half the time I'm really grooving with this, and half the time she sounds like Annie Edison's sexy Christmas song. Time After Time is a huge song, and it's clearly the best song here, both in writing and performance. It's truly jarring to hear here sing legitimately well in multiple songs, and then sound like a drunk Towie in just as many. This might be a four if I didn't hate her singing choices most of the time. And this is clearly a choice, because she can be a good vocalist, she would just rather sound like a drunk mom taking her divorce out on the karaoke mic.

This one just got better and better. The hits are great but even the non-hits are amazing. I love her and will add this album to my favs :)

I did not "steal" my sister's tape cassette. I was just "borrowing" it ... for like 100 listens. I loved this album then and I love it even more today. Every song on this album is great. I love her voice and the songwriting is so catchy and creative. Fabulous instrumentation. And it's recorded so well. This is an album that you can listen to really loud and it sounds fucking amazing. She's not only unusual, she's brilliant. 6 stars.

Really quite listenable and I would even say good. Authentic and really quite accomplished early 80s songs that reminded me that for a while at least Lauper was a serious deal. Not something I would personally return to regularly by any means, but I will recommend it to the girls as a bit of history they should listen to.

Ah it’s just OK isn’t it. I really struggle with 80s pop, just the drum machines and synths just make everything sound so tinny and just lacking some depth. However, there’s no denying she had some decent songs in her and a good voice. Obvs will never listen again mind.

Really good 80s pop

There are some skips on the album, but that voice is simply incredible. Time After Time and Girls Just Want to Have Fun are absolute era defining bangers.

Multiple decade-defining hits which just scream the 80's. This album was upbeat and fun. 3.5/5 I'll round up for Cyndi's spirit and energy and because this was such a strong debut album.

I guess this was okay? Wasn't THAT unusual though.

Time after time is iconic. That song alone is 5/5. I liked this more than I thought I would.

Super 80s, which I love, some iconic songs on it, some experimental. 8.5/10!

9/10 I’d only heard the two big singles, I think, so this was a massively pleasant shock. It has aged extremely well, so much in fact that it would fit in with the musical zeitgeist of 2024. Fans of both Prince and Chappell Roan will like this I think (and the latter must have been heavily influenced by this) Impeccable synth-pop-rock, well produced, well sung, a perfect length too. Some brilliant synths in here. Best: All Through The Night

Alguns hits clássicos que te levam de maneira muito forte aos anos 80. Os filmes da sessão da tarde, as brincadeiras de escola, primeiras, paixões, etc. Porém, como muitos disseram nos reviews, é muito Cindy Lauper para um álbum todo. Cansa...é muito agudo. Mas não deixa de ser um clássico.
