Such a great album. Time After Time is an absolute classic. I know this on the album, but when I listen to this, I can basically feel myself on my couch in the 80's watching a VHS of The Goonies with Cyndi Lauper playing on the soundtrack. Good times...
Enjoyable and nostalgic
Cooky broad does 80s pop I get it. Embassador to the 80s femme fatale style, but there is nothing explosive here. Its just good. Sorry for all those gen x listeners with huge nostalgia around this album, its just okay.
In her debut, Lauper showed that she is a free and rebellious spirit. Here she served and continues to serve as inspiration for other artists in the genre on how to make a good pop album. This isn't an album that's just about "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun"; many tracks here stand out and prove why Cyndi has become a pop culture icon. Never mind that she didn't achieve the same success in subsequent works; the impact of "She's So Unusual" will echo for decades and influence many other artists.
One helluva debut album that basically epitomizes the sound of the 80s. The two big hits from here you’ve heard countless times, but Lauper’s vocal range takes over on the rest of the album.
It took a long time to fall in love with this album. Time after Time (track 4) picked me up a bit, and then All Through the Night (track 6) put me over the top. Wow! I had no idea I was a Cyndi Lauper fan.
Got off to a good start - Girls Just Want To Have Fun and Time After Time are bangers - bur side two wasn’t great and brings this down to a 4 overall

The songwriting is pretty decent, and Cyndi is a powerful and authentic vocalist. I like this album, but goddamn the 1980s electronic drums get monotonous. The arrangements are mediocre at best. Still within the constraints of 80s production the songs still shine through. Even the non-single cuts are high quality- unlike a lot of 80s albums, I was able to listen all the way through. Even the B-side is quite good- a fast paced almost rocker. (remixes on the 30th anniversary edition were dreck; the demos superfluous- but this doesn't count against the original album)
Tough 4. The bangers she has on this hard carry the album. Everything else is just way too out there for me. Fun instrumentals overall though! 'Time After Time' is my fave!

Sounds like the 80s. I enjoyed it more than imagined. Some great covers in here (including Girls, didn't know that was a cover!), and some interesting co-written songs. Kind of got bored by the end but overall a fun listen
Once again I’m taken by surprise, but this time it’s from an 80s pop album. The first six tracks are excellent and well crafted pop songs. The album dips in quality for the last four tracks, but the first six make up for it in a way. 7/10
This really surprised me, it was very fun to listen to, reminded me of a female informed new-wave take on Born in the USA.

Quick listen at 38 minutes. Lots of synth, very 80s sound. Not my favorite decade for music, but there are a lot of hits on this album. I can see why it's on the list.
The idea of listening to this album all the way through is kind of funny to me. Cindy Lauper isn't the type of artist I've ever really considered that a possibility. I don't really know anything about Cindy Lauper other than the songs that you can't avoid, but I'm optimistic. I'm open to being surprised. Cover art - how many times did they have to take that picture? how posed was that. "She's So Unusual" is a really annoying album name. First song - kind of ordinary. I'm not paying much attention to the words. Cool harmonica. Is this song a flex? Is Cindy bragging about how rich she is? Or is it about people abandoning you when you're broke? Girls just wanna have fun - i don't feel like i need to listen to this again when you were mine - cool synth intro. I like the synth in this song. Cindy's vocals aren't sticking with me. am i annoyed by them? am i tuning them out? People hated Joanna Newsom for that reason but I eventually came around to her. Quick check of the lyrics. She's talking about money again! Is Cindy Lauper just an agent of capitalism dressed in funny clothes to throw us off? yes. time after time - lol i didn't even know this was her song. I donno. It's a pretty good song. I like it more than Girls. I mean, I didn't reflexively skip it. She bop - awesome synth again. I feel like I'm playing Battle Toads. I just want to listen to the synth player's solo album. This song is about oral sex, right? all through the night - i like this song. it reminds me of another, better, song, but I can't figure out what it is. Maybe time after time? witness - ska song. gimme more horns. I'll kiss you - more boss music! The synth player owns this album. I think this is a very horny song. I think the video game synth is the signal. He's so unusual - is Betty Boop Cindy Lauper's inspiration? Yeah Yeah - thank god it's the last song. Sounds kind of like the other ones. Synth isn't out front here, which is a disappointment. I think the idea of seriously listening to Cindy Lauper is funny. I also think its funny that I'm giving her more stars than Cream. Please don't kick me out of the cool record club guys!
i’ve avoided this record since adolescence mostly based on the album art. she’s so unusual. she’s so random. look how interesting. no shoes wow. what wild hair. i’m also not drawn to pop. we've all heard “girls” and “time after time”, but i've avoided the rest. but now i’m grading essays while this bops along, and i'm enjoying it more than i thought i would. my wife told me she bop is about female masturbation, which is chill. on my way home from work, i remembered i inherited this record from my mom, so my second listen is on wax. money changes everything is excellent. like a springsteen tunnel of love instrumental. when you were mine is also excellent. prince song, but she sounds like female elvis costello. or he sounds like male cyndi lauper. the hits are memorable and as is usually the case, made better in the context of the album. uh oh, i'm into it. all through the night. shimmering synth. quieter instrumental so you can hear her voice better. wicked synth solo with a nobel prize winning bass groove under it. i’m a changed man, cyndi. thank you generator. she’s great. i'm sold. agile and peppy and alternately cartoonishly fun, desperate and aching. dumb apples and oranges recency comparison: so far, this album is everything yesterday's cream album isn’t. self possessed, cohesive, actually fun. a reggae song. good groove. good synth(?)/bass line. not the best tune for her though? the elvis costello comparison comes to mind again, briefly. i’ll kiss you is good. betty boop joke song, k. kept it short. good. last track is fine. stronger start than finish. good album. broadened my 80s synth pop horizons. glad to own it on vinyl and throw it into the mix.
There’s some solid songs on this album, like Witness, I’ll Kiss You and the first song. I like when she gets a little experimental with her vocals. Never realized that the person who sings for Fever ray/the knife sounds just like Cyndi Lauper. Love all the synths!!!
well shit, I enjoyed that. It's campy and so 80's and i love it for that. Cindy Lauper has a great emotive voice. She sounds like could go punk at any moment in this record. For me it's a 3, but almost a 4 - I enjoyed it more than Disraeli Gears ffs.

Not the 80s music style I like. I think she seems cool and would be fun to hang with. The stupid videos on MTV might have had some bearing on that. Being a teen in the 80s I wasn't into top 40 much. ALT/New Wave are more my jam. I do not think she should be in the Rock Hall of Fame because it's not rock to me. There are tons in there that don't belong and other shunned that should be. Is she horrible not her but the songs are.
I forgot how good this album is. The first side is 4 legit hits. The second side is not as strong, but still engaging. The only miss in my opinion is ‘Witness’ followed by ‘I’ll Kiss You’
A somewhat dated synthy pop rock album. It sounds just like the cover looks. It’s fun, flamboyant, not too serious. It has youthful spirit and love. Her vocals are solid and boisterous. But it’s not really my thing - a bit boring and the hooks don’t hit me too hard.
Less my thing, something in the 80's heavy synth vibes I find too gimmicky, at least to my hear. But there some well deserve "classic" in there for sure.

Pretty excellent piece of pop, all things considered. 1/3 timeless classics, 1/3 decent bops, and 1/3 duds. But the good is _so_ good that it gets 4/5

i just had Van Halen's 1984 and I thought it completely failed the premise of this list: the only things on there that you could even potentially argue deserved to be heard before you die were the singles that almost every english speaker has probably already heard a billion times. this album is basically the complete opposite. yes, there are huge singles we've all heard over and over, but it turns out they come with a whole album of no skips! basically every song on here could have been a single for a lesser artist, which really highlights how good the big hits here are, for them to have risen to the top of this selection

I’m sure that at time of release this alb was really game changing and stood out for how unique it was. Now it’s 40 years later and it’s just okay. The big singles Girls Just Wanna Have Fun and Time After Time still land very well, but the rest of the album just feels like any other 80s pop. I don’t doubt that this album was incredibly influential and launched many musical careers. I just think the successors went on to outshine this album in a number of ways.

Simply amazing from start to finish.
I didn't know much about Cyndi before listening, not much except for "Time After Time," and MJ looking at her disgustedly when they were recording "We Are The World." After listening, I understand why he looked at her like that. It's not even really like Cyndi is singing. She's really just hollering on almost every song. This album is only 38 minutes, but good lord are those 38 long, and loud minutes.

Pretty incredible, particularly the run from Girls Just Wanna Have Fun > When You Were Mine > Time After Time. The quality drops a bit toward the end, but I strongly considered putting this in the 5 star clud.

The only thing surprising here is that I've totally forgotten some of these tracks existed. Even so, this is a great album. Not quite five stars as the non-single tracks aren't quite as good.
It would probably get the bog standard eighties synth-pop vote, except for Cyndi herself who absolutely elevates it just by doing summat a bit different with it all - wonderfully offbeat through the whole thing, and in surprised I haven't actually listened to this before
“Girls Just Want to Have Fun” is the perfect pop song. “Time After Time” is also great. “I’ll Kiss You” and “When You Were Mine” are also fun. Lauper’s voice is a bit of an acquired taste and overall the record drags in the middle a bit (“She Bop” in particular). But still very enjoyable pop. Somewhere between 4 and 5 stars.

What a feel good album, whether you enjoy her music or not; this album really hits the spot on a blue sky, sunny Friday. Released in ‘83, I’d argue it’s way ahead of its time, this album gets a high 9.3/10.
Lauper’s unique voice has an affecting mix of raw punk edge and emotional vulnerability and it gives her the ability to make a song almost anything she wants it to be. Girls Just Wanna Have Fun becomes a song of feminist empowerment; When You Were Mine addresses the continuum of human sexuality in a way which sounds unbelievably modern for 1983; and of course Time After Time is a haunting classic which she makes her own. Is it a pop record? Certainly. But she understands that pop is powerful when it’s well crafted - it can deliver a payload of meaning right where it’s needed and this album does exactly that. Pleasing fact: The musicians are mostly from Philadelphia band The Hooters.
This is the epitome of a fun album throughout. Sadly, front-loaded with great tracks like the anthemic Girls Just Want to Have Fun and When You Were Mine (which has Prince's hands all over), but losing track by the end. Not bad, but definitely not amazing. Still, if this somehow found itself in my collection, I'd probably keep it and spin it sometimes when I just want to let my feminine side free. ⭐⭐⭐

Cyndi Lauper's voice is annoying, but her singing voice is 1000x better than her speaking voice. The beginning of Money Changes Everything sounds like INXS' Don't Change. RIP Captain Lou Albano. Girls Just Want to Have Fun makes me think of the Goonies because it sounds so much like the song she did for the movie. It's a catchy song. This sounds like the music that would be playing at the prom in an 80s movie. Time After Time is a good song. Definitely Cyndi Lauper's best and maybe the best New Wave song ever. Followed up by one of the worst songs ever, She Bop. All Through the Night is another single you hear in things. If this is some of the best New Wave has to offer, I'll pass. And now some ska inspired crap! I'll Kiss You is bad. And now some Betty Boop inspired nonsense. That should have been the title of the album.

Хиты узнаются сразу: Girls Just Wanna have Fun и Time To Time проигрывались в стольких фильмах и сериалах, что знаешь наизусть. И еще мне нравится обложка - её хочется разглядывать за деталями))

wait this was good. i also didn’t realize how much of it i already knew. “money changes everything” got me weirdly verklempt right off the bat—there’s a melancholy earnestness under the silly surface that almost reminds me of pulp (???) in that it evokes this really strong emotional reaction in me more or less involuntarily. what’s up with that…? i LOVEEEEE “when you were mine” of course. the synths got a little too squeaky for me especially in the last couple songs but overall i just find her voice really engaging even when she’s being crazy. she sounds like a cartoon character! it’s fun! i’m having fun! fav tracks: when you were mine; money changes everything; she bop; girls just wanna have fun
I flip flopped my opinion as this as I was listening to it so many times. I kept going between getting won over by how weird and interesting the songs were, and hating her voice so much that it was too grating to enjoy the redeemable aspects. For every interesting detail I appreciated, there was one I disliked. I was going to say that many of these less pleasant details sounded like bad renditions of Prince or Michael Jackson's most notable mannerisms, but then thought about when this album came out and that sort of didn't make sense. So maybe she actually foreshadowed those aspects of their iconic style by debuting drafts of them, which they perfected. It ends with a bang ("Yeah Yeah") but I still don't think it won me over fully. But I do respect her artistry for sure. This album is a banger, and I think everyone would agree. 'Girls Just Want To Have Fun' and 'Time After Time' are incredible songs. Every other song could be terrible and I'd still give this album a good review. It was my first time hearing all of the other songs, and I would say I generally liked them. I liked 'She Bop' 'Witness' and 'Yeah Yeah' the most of those songs. By the end I was getting a little bored of the Cyndi Lauper sound, but I enjoyed the album a lot. 8/10

31/1001 Whenever someone has to TELL you they are funny, whacky, zany or interesting, you can almost guarantee they are not. This has been my enduring take on Cyndi Lauper. That said, I can't deny Girls Just Wanna Have Fun has also endured, and deservedly so - it's an attention-grabbing, catchy, bratty pop single which sounds remarkably fresh and energetic to this day. Time After Time is a fair enough ballad - not my cup of tea though - and she did that song for The Goonies as well. Oh and True Colours, I know that one, of course. But we are getting ahead of ourselves there... really, listening to this album for the first time was just a matter of how long before her vocals began to grate. And to be completely honest, I was surprised to find Lauper's voice was the one thing that kept me interested through the middle-of-the-road offerings here, if anything she adds a bit of authenticity, and alternative edge, to standard 80s pop/rock fare. As side two plays out, of course, it everything begins to grate, but, credit where credit is due, she has gone up in my estimation a little. I always had her down as a poor man's Madonna, all crazy hair dos and raiding the dressing up box, but no real substance. Which is unfair. As the big singles from She's So Unusual suggest, with decent material, Lauper was worth the attention she demanded. Not my bag, little stands out besides the singles particularly in the second half, but respect to Cyndi, it's not necessarily her fault. Still only one star, but not as awful as Bruce Springsteen at least.

About a month into my album journey, my Nana passed away, and my aunt who took care of my Nana for most of her life ended up giving me her CD collection when she moved out for a short while. A few of these albums were on this list. One of the first I got was R.E.M.'s Green. This will have been the second one. I put this background upfront because I found some sentimentality in Cyndi Lauper's debut. For sure, "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" is a bop I heard before, but this was my first full-on connection to her music. It was nice hearing how charismatic and endearing Cyndi was at such a young age, and how the pop compositions surrounding her voice were tight and well-elevated. She could go toe-to-toe with Prince after how she covered his song "When You Were Mine". That said, the sound is very much locked into the synthesizer-drenched 80s style, which isn't unlike the Prince albums I've heard already. Though probably even more detrimental is that side one overpowers side two. While "She Bop" is a delight and there isn't a bad song in the second half, the album peaked in the front, particularly with the ballad "Time After Time" as one of the few songs to transcend the decade it came from. She's So Unusual is still a fun album backed by a strong and ferocious personality. Perhaps that's what my aunt gravitated towards when she got the album.

Decent pop. Flashbacks on primary school discos in the 80s.
Holy fuck there are some crazy bangers on here. "When You Were Mine" goes so crazy. And obviously the massive tunes rule completely. She like cannot sing, half of the songs are way under-written, and the entire B side is filler but the grooves rule so who really cares. It's the fucking 80's baby.
- The first four tracks are essentially perfect. Boisterous and energetic, but well-balanced by some solid emotion. ("Time After Time" is heavenly.) - Loses a bit of steam after that, though I applaud the inclusion of "She Bop." Unfortunately the last few songs just make me want to skip back to the beginning rather than drag myself through the rest. - Bonus point for the sheer amount of style ingrained in her performances.
Forget about "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" and "Time After Time" and you're still left with a pretty alright album. I'm kind of amazed by Lauper's consistency to pair thoughtful lyrics with a great 80s' pop sounds (though, that could be due to a producer").Regardless, this is a fun album. I underrated Cyndi Lauper before, thinking she wasn't unusual ~enough~. I won't that make that mistake again

Ouf, Ca ne me tentait pas. C'est comme plein d'autre mais en moins bon. La toune de Prince est sortie 3 ans plus tot et la version de Lauper n'y emmene rien du tout. Quelqes moments amusants mais ça ne me tentait pas.
J'ai toujours rêvé d'être une fille dans les années 1980 et de vivre la soirée du bal. Cyndi Lauper me rapproche de ce rêve. Une fenêtre sur le son d'une époque. Avec une chanteuse de haut calibre et une réalisation cohérente. Les synthés sont cool. Je n'ai eu que du plaisir avec cette écoute qui s'éloigne un peu de mes goûts dominants.
La première toune fonctionne aussi bien que de se faire traîner au bout d'une chaine sur un chemin de bois par un truck pendant 5m5s. Time After Time est l'ultimate slow. Correct.

fun pop. classics are masterpieces
I really enjoyed this. I grew up with Cyndi Lauper's music as background noise in the '80's, and never really listened to it because it was "girl music." But, now that I'm older, I really enjoy it. Her voice can be punchy and then sonorous in the same song, and the lyrics are great! There's a lot to recommend in a romantic way. Not so much in trying to woo someone, but rather in the way you do in a long term relationship. I also like the synthy and eclectic sound. I miss the experimental nature music had from this era. Music has become so cardboardy and uniform. We could learn a lesson from Lauper in trying new stuff and making music sound different but also appealing to a wide variety of people. Also, makes me miss Lou Albano and the Goonies...
All of the good songs of this album were released as singles. Everything else was "meh"
As a child in the 90s, this was one of the cassette tapes my mom would play in her van often. Girls Just Wanna Have Fun was our JAM when I was in elementary school. Listening now, I feel like this album has held up over time.
"She's So Unusual" is just pure, unadulterated fun! It's like a burst of colorful, joyful energy. Cyndi Lauper's voice is so unique, and the whole album is just a classic slice of the '80s that still holds up. It makes you want to dance and sing along every time.

This album was completely unexpected. I assumed that it would have a few top-loaded, stand alone singles and the rest would be filler fluff. The reality is that She’s So Unusual plays better as a full album listen than just listening to the singles. I never was a huge Cyndi Lauper fan, and certainly never thought I’d be able to listen to an entire album of that voice of hers, but really, this was pretty damn good. I also really didn’t expect the vague Heartland vibe that a few of the songs contain. Really solid. 4.2/5

After an underwhelming first track, the album opens up to be such a fun and iconic album. A lot of timeless hits (see what I did there) and other very energetic and quirky stuff which achieves exactly what she wants. Also that transition from He’s so Unusual to Yeah Yeah deserves all of the credit. Brilliant, fun album that everyone can enjoy, not just teenage girls from the 80s.
Kickass 80s pop record. Really this is up there with Talking Heads’ output around the same time. Energetic, confident delivery and sound, a lot of authentic, fun weirdness, and great tunes. Must-listen #98!

Great range
This one's a true gem, both the album and the artist. Lauper has so much force, talent, and an absolutely unique and impressive way to perform. Maybe that was a bit too much for that time to give her the credit she deserved. Time After Time is my favorite, followed by All Through The Night.

Cheesy? Yep. Dated? Sure. But not to the detriment of this bundle of rainbow coloured, synth-slathered pop oddments by the manic pixie dream chipmunk and co. A product of its time and all the better for it.
'We think we know what we're doing / We don't know a thing.' So sings Lauper on the opening track (the lead single from The Brains' 1980 debut), a song about money troubles of all things, a realism I wasn't necessarily prepared for but in no way rejected. After that, each song contains even more truth bits for us to chew over: 'girls just want to have fun'; 'I love you more than I did when you were mine' (Prince); 'You said, "Go slow," I fall behind.' That's just the first side. Sure, time after time, we've heard that tune, but that doesn't make it any less powerful. And the album in toto is well worth your ear. Lauper rebels by kissing you, and even gets avant-garde w/ a 45 sec cover of Helen Kane's 1920 'He's So Unusual.' A classic.

Weird that there was a time before these songs.
Like it a lot, reminds me of tango in the night slightly but with its own uniqueness, obviously has some classics, big fan of the last song with the audio in the background. Solid electric guitar and synths throughout. Give it a 7.5/10

Was looking forward to this, but beyond the singles, which are quite literally fun, but the rest was was lightweight 80s pop album filler.
I never tire of hearing the opening keyboard burst of Girls Just Wanna. I also enjoyed the Prince cover, although it didn't quite have the same energy or smut as the original. Time After Time is just LUSH. The rest of the album is early 80's production formula heavy. No surprise. Still decent.
Let's be clear, the purpose of a eighties pop album is to deliver four - minimum - gold-plated singles. Which the first six tracks here more than delivers. So on the downslope you can do what you like, an essential cover or two, a forgettable album closer. Probably only Madonna delivered a better eighties female pop album than this.

Holy shit, I had a feeling I’d like this but this is terrific. No skips at all. 80s vibrance at its finest. I feel it in my heart and soul. Hard to pick a favorite. Through the Night, She Bop, Money Changes Everything … and we haven’t even discussed the hits yet.

Cyndi Lauper has always struck me, as a child growing up in the 90's and early aughts watching VH1 for hours a day, as very annoying. I was aware of 'Time After Time' and 'Girls Just Wanna Have Fun', and the former is extremely cheesy (though OK) while the latter is brutal. But this pre-conceived bias towards her is why this exercise of listening to all these albums is good -- I was confronted full-on with having to address whether this bias was something based in reality or based in making a black/white decision one time while I was watching tv on a Saturday afternoon when I was 11 years old. I am happy to report that my findings were inconclusive. This album had a lot of really fun, really interesting pop instrumentation, but also a great deal of annoying Cyndi-Lauper-ness going on. For the full experience, throw on 'Yeah Yeah' in which you have this wonderful horn hook overlayed on top of her being, like, demonstrably *way too much*. I don't think Cyndi Lauper is for me, but I hope that my foray into this album at least shed some of the unfair assumptions I had and instead replaced them with barely fair assumptions that I know will hold forever, again, without thinking much about them.

I just remember Girls Just want to Have Fun from this album and the video and how little I identified with how Cyndi Lauper looked. I don't even know if Girls just want to have fun is a good song! It's just like part of my growing up history. But Time after Time is so good.

Time after Time perhaps one of the greatest songs ever. Girls Just Want to Have Fun undeniable bop despite how overplayed / overused it has become. As far as debut albums go it’s lightning in a bottle stuff. Overused synth keys, someone had a new toy in the studio and rinsed it. Enjoyable but won’t really return to anything bar the hits.
Listened to this for the first time as a young girl. Mom was a big Cyndi fan. Definitely will enjoy re-listening.

Boy, do I miss the 80s.... Cindy Lauper's debut is the quintessential Early-80s-pop-album. The music, synth- and guitar-laden, as is typical for the period, happily bubbles on, and the album opens with a number of very strong tracks - "Money Changes Everything", "Girls Just Want to Have Fun", "Time After Time" and especially "She Bop" are all extremely catchy as they are different, and all serve to show Lauper's talent. Side B opens with an equally stong "All Through the Night", but loses a bit of steam during the final couple of tracks. No matter - this album is a must listen for anyone even remotely interested in 80s music. 4/5

I find Cyndi impossible to dislike. But it shows how far the bar of unusual has moved.
This dug up some suppressed childhood car music memories. Maybe if I was listening to this for the first time I'd feel differently, but suddenly Time After Time hit and I was an 8 year old again feeling bored out of my mind. A strange cocktail of surreal emotions hearing this. I can tell this music is bold and original but it's ingrained in my brain already lol.
Knew about half of this already. Most of it is really good! Of the new-to-me songs, Witness is my easy favourite, and Yeah Yeah is the worst. Those Betty Boop samples are off-putting. I had to check I didn't have audio playing elsewhere on my computer when that started. Time After Time is the all-timer here, I think.
What a fun album! I love most of the songs. Some are just beautiful.

I expected to like this more, but then I remembered that I wasn't a huge fan back in the day. Check out the credits for some fun facts, though! Girls Just Want to Have Fun was composed by a man, for example. In fact, the tracks I like least were NOT written by Ms. Lauper at all! Maybe that's why I always felt she was a contrived character. I do not like the dumbed-down version of Prince's When You Were Mine at all. The songs that she actually composed (Time After Time, She Bops, Witness, and I'll Kiss You) are my favorites on this album.

Two of the biggest 80s hits that are surprisingly timeless for coming for an 80s album. The other songs are still very good but unsurprisingly not timeless and sound completely of their time. This is great if you like 80s and all the assortments of music troupes that come with it but not great if you don’t enjoy wobbly bass and synths. 8/10
Thoughts before listening: 80s pop star with a couple iconic hits. I've never listened to to the full album, but I do enjoy Cyndi's unique voice. Review: This starts off with a less new wave, more heartland pop rock style song that I surpisingly enjoyed. Then the hits started, and there are plenty on here. Its hard to deny that her hits are iconic even if they're not really for me. This is the sound of popular 80s music and Cyndi is one of the decade's true superstars. I am glad to listen to this album, but I can only give it 3-stars.

I often find albums on this list that are way too long, but this is the first I felt was too short. That's not bad in any other way than that I wanted thisurprisingly sophisticated pop masterpiece to keep going. Oh well, one can always press «repeat».
There's some bangers on here and some total crap. I can see how it's probably influenced a lot of artists though and has obviously tried to push boundaries.

As someone who was really into post-punk music, I'm not particularly familiar with Cyndi Lauper - she always seemed to me to be trying very hard to be wacky, zany and outrageous, but always ending up looking a bit gauche. That coupled with her voice, which always seemed a bit grating to me, has meant I've never spent much time listening to her music (though I heave heard 'Girls Just Want to Have Fun' - rather too many times). So when this album came up on the list, I was keen to give it a go. I think I lasted three tracks. I know this was popular, and Lauper probably shifted gazillions of units, but I don't think this is a great album, nor is it an album one must listen to.
It's just nonstop hits one right after the other for the first half, then it fizzles a little bit.

That sweet sound of 80s synth pop music. She was way more punk than Madonna - but Cyndi was just as much a Queen of Pop. An iconic female vocalist - one I can only dream of being able to sing a long with (those high notes are no joke!) Not the kind of record I'd sit and listen to front to back again, it kind of gets weird at the end...or maybe it's just that there's too many hits at the front of this one. When Cyndi comes on the radio, I'll never change it. I forgot what a jam "All Through The Night" is.
I know she's a pop icon, and I appreciate her impact on music and the general 80s aesthetic, but I am not and never have been a fan of Cyndi Lauper. Her voice is just too shrill for me. I did like 2 songs on this album, however. So +1 star for that.

Cyndi Lauper can sing!! I don’t necessarily love her voice — but lady hits those notes, every time. This album so very creative & it showcases Lauper’s huge & diverse musical range — it could have been named “She’s so unusually talented” Also, the album made an important contribution to female empowerment in the 80’s through 90’s — not to mention its influence on the lgbtq movement. The album could also have been named “Everyone is so Unusual & Just Wants to Have Fun (show them respect)” This is a powerhouse compilation with some great songs. I’m not the target audience and, i prefer smoother vocal styles, so it’s not a desert island album for me. But this is creative transgressive and well executed pop music. Great album — much respect.

She’s So Unusual presents an alternative option for 80’s Pop that stylistically takes it’s cues from Punk and New Wave rather than the Funk, Club, and Disco that Madonna and is, as such definitely more unusual as Pop and as a social document. Lauper has a distinct sense of humour and a clear love and appreciation for both Vaudeville and classic R&B. It makes for a fun, infectious and occasionally heartbreakingly beautiful and sincere listening experince

While a few of the songs are catchy, the music is plastic, shiny, and safe. On top of that, the vibrato vocals sound like the braying of a donkey. This combination means that the music is neither interesting nor well performed.

I've always struggled with music from the 80's, probably because my first influential music loves were from the 90's and likely a direct response to the previous decade. I'm trying to keep an open mind and an open ear, but oof, right off the bat not a fan of Cyndi's voice or the music. It's grating and kitschy. I do like the album cover, and "She Bop" was fun with the synth. ---- Update, I've made it to "All through the night" and I guess have acclimated to Cyndi's voice. Do I actually enjoy this song? But then "Witness" - what the hell did you just do to reggae? Sorry about your music Gen X.

The first two singles from this album have to be two of the greatest of the 1980s. It makes it all the stranger how poor the rest of the album is. The two covers are well chosen but far too long - she manages to add more than a minute to each of them. The second half of the album is dreadful. I will say this for Cyndi Lauper - she has an absolutely brilliant voice; sweet as a bell and at the same time full of character and drama. It’s only this that makes trash like She-bop, I’ll Kiss You and Yeah Yeah listenable.
Fun record and definitely a key representative for 80’s pop on this list. Ubiquitous, influential hits aside, Cyndi has a more than solid voice with quite a range to carry her young-lady-meets-grown-woman aesthetic. It bolsters the majority of this tracklist to relevance in the 21st Century and beyond.
