vocally iconic. didn’t expect to love it but did. some throwback classics but didn’t know how strong of a singer she was.

Girls just wanna have fun and I say let them. Some real cool early girl pop/disco, some cool bass.

Great album, a true pioneer of pop. And some classics with girls just want to have fun and time after time. A few new ones caught me as well such as Money Changes Everything. Glad to see this one on the list!

I've definitely heard this one before! I think Mom or Dad had this one on vinyl, I put it on once or twice in the basement to see what Cyndi was all about. It's got the two supermassive hits that she brought into the world, "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" and "Time After Time." And on top of that, you're telling me this was a debut?? To have hits like that on a debut album is just something special, man. It's tough to pick between the two, but I think I prefer "Girls" because despite feeling so upbeat, there's a lot of melancholy in her voice and in the lyrics. It's a plea for the world to let women be. I hope the world has let you be, Cyndi. Beyond those hits, the album is great; I'd give it another half star if it weren't for the last two tracks, which ended the whole affair on a sour note. But still, great job overall. Favorite tracks: Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, Time After Time, Money Changes Everything, All Through the Night. Album art: Really love this one, a classic in my book. Dancing carelessly in front of a brightly painted street facade. I like that she had to take off the heels for the dance, but left them in the picture. Cool. 4/5

Enjoyed this! Time after Time obviously classic and then also discovered some good tunes I'd never heard. I liked opening track Money Changes Everything, When you Were Mine and closing track He's So Unusual was kinda fun

Vocals are really cool, sounds like I’m in an 80s movie with the first song. Songs are bangers and feel good. According to Wikipedia “The album is primarily new wave-based, with many of the songs being influenced by synthpop and pop rock”

Good 80s album. Some very good stand alone songs. Think the album is very varied with brilliant and poor songs. Many better 80s albums about but rated as it is because of the stand alone hits.

I was never much of a Cyndi Lauper fan in high school, but she has grown on me over the years. She really is a good song writer and has amazing pitch. I'm not much of a fan of the timber, however.

Iconic artist that defines the sound and culture of the 80s. Great run time, 2 massive hits, the first half is amazing, the second half while a bit of a dip in songwriting quality is still decent, so all together a good and timeless pop album.

Entertaining and catchy pop, just like it should be! Couple of big hits, great A side, decent B side.

Love it! Actually like it more than I did as a high-schooler. The whole album holds up, and listening to it now I appreciate Cyndi's vocal prowess more.

Pop, rock, 1983. One of the most iconic records of the 80s and one of the most interesting pop albums of that period. "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" is a perfect timeless anthem and songs like "Time After Time" and "When You Were Mine" (the second is a well executed Prince's cover) helped her to become the popstar we all know.

This was released my freshman year in college. Thought it was OK for modern girl pop rock back then, and I appreciate Cyndi Lauper a bit more today. Four hits and the rest pretty good. 3.5 and rounding up because of Cosentyx.

Such a fun album and it is hard to believe it is a debut release. The first half of She's So Unusual plays out like a best of. The second half meanders a little but that is forgiven as it serves as a counter point to the first half.

First half of this album is stellar, from her hits to the very solid new wave covers. Don't know why she didn't have a career more resembling Madonna's.

I really enjoyed the album. Very nostalgic for me. I was 10 when it was released. I knew 60% of the songs and the unfamiliar ones were good. The song When You Were Mine was written by Prince, which is pretty cool

Just because this has Girls Just Want to Have Fun and Time After Time, I have this a 4. Money Changes Everywthing would probably be the other good song, but the rest of the album was strange and I didn’t like it too much.

Slaps

There are two pretty-much-perfect pop songs on here, which is a great return for any album. In fact I'd say the whole first half is shiny synth-pop gold - the kind that makes me think 'Cor, wouldn't it have been great to grow up in 80s America and hang out at the mall all day...?!' The quality dips a bit towards the end though.

Saved Prior: Time After Time Off Rip: When You Were Mine, She Bop, All Through the Night, Witness Cutting Edge: I'll Kiss You Overall Notes: 80's music gets shit for being ludicrous but the music that survives is some of the best pop music out there. Time After Time always makes me want to cry for some reason (positive connotation). If I was a bigger fan of Girls Just Want To Have Fun (it's fun at bars but wouldn't listen to it by myself) this would've been pushed into the low-5 zone.

Forgot how good the first half of this album is, especially with Girls Just Want to have Fun and Time after Time.

Got this on Vinyl for the wife, we listened to it the other day and you know what there’s some pretty good jams on here couple of the songs I don’t know why made me tear up just a little but definitely a great 80s album all the way around liked it a lot, heavy nostalgia for me on this one.

I’ve always liked Girls Just Wanna Have Fun but wasn’t expecting a good album. Glad I was wrong, this is an unapologetic 80’s sound but fun AF and very interesting. I recognized many of the tracks too. I like it.

The music is there. The energy is there. There’s a range to the album that I liked. I’d have to be in a mood to appreciate it all.

Really liked this album, shorter runtime allowed for the big hits to really keep their energy. The last 3 songs on the album were still missing in some parts, Cyndi's higher pitches don't come off too well in my opinion. First section is great though.

Fantastic piece of art with great hits and great b-sides. I definitely slept on Cyndi Lauper, but she rocks.

This is a really strong album from the 80s new wave era. I'd love to hear some of these songs without the cheesy synths, but that's a minor complaint. 4 stars.

I like Cyndi Lauper, but I've never listened to this album before. I can see why she was so popular after the release of this album. It's absolutely full of great songs. It shows a tremendous diversity of styles as well. 4/5

Wow. Just wow. I was cery impressed with how gripping this album was. Very entertaining with lyrics that were very thoughful for pop and pretty thoughtful in general. Tge music was mostly excellent and but overall it kept me hooked until the last song. I think the key was the song order - she or whoever is responsible really payed attention to the pace of each song, choosing shifting both mood and tempo very quickly each time. Awesome. Its also an obvious classic. Fun time. 4

Pretty good, some timeless classics on here for sure. I especially liked ‘witness’ sounds a bit like ska. And ‘she bop’ is about strumming one out. Nice.

Highlight: I'll Kiss You The thing that surprised me the most about this album is that I used to think all of these songs spanned multiple albums over several years. Nope, they're all here on one album, and it's not even a "best of". The songs I've already heard a million times and some new treats "I'll Kiss You" is especially bouncy and fun. Every track a banger!

This slaps a big one

This was one of the first albums I ever owned as a child so it holds a special place in my heart. It is dated af but charming and fun. Cyndi's vocals are wild and most of the songs are bops. When You Were Mine is a real standout. Lovely to revisit this 30+ years later.

Freaky deeky and too much going on at times but found myself singing my heart out not even to the hits. Money changes everything. I'll kiss you. I Cyndi Laup'ed it up x

Interesting album, not sure I love all of it cause it is extremely 80's coded, and some of the synth work (like on all Through the Night) is ridiculous and crazy. But I don't mind it all that much, what I do mind more is that the second half is not as good as the first.

I probably liked this more than I was thinking. I haven’t listened to much Cyndi and was thinking very superficial 80s. Sure a lot of that but felt a little deeper and complex. But what do I know. Girls Just Want to Have Fun is probably a victim of its own success. Really cool song. Generational but can be a little tough to listen to because I’ve heard it too much. Time after Time is a great song. I thought the rest was good, kind of fell in the back. 3.5 and I’m struggling which direction to go. The round up would be purely on those 2 hits. But maybe needed another big moment to go up.

Real talk: I didn’t enjoy this as much as I expected I would. The two big hits are still great for what they are, but the rest of the album was meh. 3.25/5

She really was unusual, and continues to be....... This holds up surprisingly well after >40 years, with a bunch of really quite good singles to start off the album (even though 2 of them are actually covers), leading into some absolute crackers in the middle section - Time After Time will always have a place in sad-lands to go and mope after a lost love. The 80s production is about as 80s as you can get, but it doesn't get too over the top at any stage. Close to 4 stars, but I think it just falls away a little too much in the latter part of the album so I'll give it a 3 for now,

The definitive 80s pop album. My displeasure of hearing blanketed pop music has been diminished a little bit the past ten years or so I've picked up synthesizers as my go-to instrument. Unfortunately it doesn't feel any different that this album is essentially music I wouldn't really ever want to hear because I hear the hits plenty of times in public spaces for better or for worse. She Bop rules, Witness is kind of dubby which was a surprise. Other than that, it's good music that is absolutely not for me. It's so 80s in some fine ways, but aside from a few songs that will outlive all of us on earth right now and be played for generations and generations of people to come, She's So Unusual is too cliche to stand the test of time as an album.

In an ideal world Cyndi Lauper should have had the same fame as Madonna. Lauper is the better singer, has better original music and is able to put a unique stamp on the covers. She was also willing to push the envelope more. While Madonna may have been wearing (for the time) revealing clothes in her early videos, Lauper managed to get a top-10 hit about the joy of masturbation with hardly anyone batting an eye. Part of Lauper's appeal (and, unfortunately, part of what limited her career) was her look and style. She made sure she stood out, with red hair, a mashup of thrift-store close and a Betty Boop voice. And this was probably where she hit the wall. Madonna eventually tried to fashion herself as the new Marilyn Monroe, where too many people ignored Lauper's talents and pigeonholed her as a cartoon character. Largely, her debut She's So Unusual has weathered the years and earned quite a bit more respect than it originally garnered. "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" was a major hit (and a cover, to boot), but "Time After Time" is the song that really caught my attention. "All Through the Night" and "She Bop" are also two of the better songsy, the cover of Prince's "When You Were Mine" and "Money Changes Everything" have received quite a bit of notice in later years as well. Where the album falls short is the second side, where Lauper tries to live up to the cartoon character side of her schtick. After "Witness" the album just falls apart. If she would have just decided to say "screw it" to the character and put some actual songs in to finish the album it would have received another star.

So interesting to learn about the songs on here that are covers she put a feminist spin on. It totally changes “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” for me. I used to find it a bit annoying, but the story of it got me on board. I like that her voice is unusual but after the full album it grated on me. There are definitely some songs that it works better on than others and I thought the first side of the album was much stronger than the second side. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the album as 80s synth pop is really not my thing, but I’m not sure I liked it enough to ever listen to the full thing again. Impressive that a debut album contains two absolute classics. The vocals are a bit hard to listen to in parts because of how all over the place they are, but some quite fun pop and synthy hits on this album.

This album came out on my birthday! How fun. Also the trickle from left to right earbud in the "girls just wanna have fun" opening was so delightful. I also sang this song in high school. So many wonderful 80s elements going on in this album. I think it's really fun, but also started to wear on me after a bit.

Album has a couple of bangers, a few really weird ones, and is quintessentially 80s. Happy to have heard those songs, don't need to hear them again for a while.

Good synth pop, I enjoy the bass. Lauper's vocals are an acquired taste, but the album doesn't quite outstay it's welcome. I kind of wish some of the insane personality from the last few songs were more present earlier in the album, because it for sure ended on a crazy note.

I am certainly a little sick of the two big hits of this album, but I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the other tracks! The instrumentals are really tight and fun, and though I almost wish it was someone other than Cyndi who got to sing over them, it still worked for me. This was exactly the kind of 80's girl pop that I enjoy, as it has just enough edge to it that I'm not rolling my eyes from it being overly saccharine. A fun pop/glam rock album with typical 80s synth. Cyndi Laupner’s voice is great in this album, even if it gets mashed with some cheesey 80s music, it’s a decent album that goes through different moods. The album drops a little on the second half, but I quite liked the closer Yeah Yeah. For all of the crap produced in the 80s, this is quite clear from that, albeit not an all timer for me or necessarily a game changer.

I didn't know she had so many classics on one album. Girls just want to have fun, Time after Time, and all through the night. The rest of the album was just ok tho.

Review - the songs you already know are very good, she's a good singer. A few you don't know might be good too. It's very of its time, slightly shock-rock adjacent pop music. Only big downside is the Prince cover is not a good version of the song. Score - 6.5/10 Need to listen? YES

Two big songs are obviously great but She Bop and All Through the Night in the middle of the album are absolute tunes as well. Very good wee pop album, enjoyed.

A strong and slightly off-axis voice, Lauper is a real talent who doesn't crack our contemporary consciousness as consistently as some of her contemporaries. 'When You Were Mine' is decent and otherwise, the first side of this record is all quality. This isn't a masterpiece but it's really good. Lauper was a cut above many of her solo-female-singer contemporaries, particularly because she transcended the pop sphere. She also has writing credits on a number of the hits (including 'Time After Time' and 'She Bop'). 'Time' is the jewel of the collection, proving a motivational anthem even thirty years after the album released. The instrumentation isn't going to revolutionize the way you think of music and the production is most notable for not sounding like the reverb-y garbage heap that characterizes the 80's but there are many good songs here and the album is an enjoyable listen (remember those?). I'll go with a 3/5 but I could be convinced of a 4 by a compelling fan, I'm sure. Well worth stopping by 1983 for an 38 1/2 minutes.

Kooky 80's synth pop, mostly. I hear some B52s influence here which is fun. I actually like some of the deeper cuts like I'll Kiss You over the big hit singles. Seems like a lot of cover tunes for an 80's album, but she did make them her own kind of electronic songs. There are a couple tracks I could do without but for the most part it is a fun new wave album.

This is definitely catchy, even throughout the deep cuts, and there are some incredible gems (Time After Time and Through the Night) on it, but Girls Just Want to Have Fun's overplay and the butchering of a classic Prince tune keeps me from seeing this as a great album

Too Synthy for me

She may not be the best vocalist or have made the best pop music of the 80s. But you can't deny that Cyndi Lauper made her mark on music and is a very important marker for pop music overall.

I was well familiar with “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” and “Time After Time” but I had no idea that these were from Lauper’s debut album. It’s an impressive feat, but it’s still hard for me to get past this degree of synth-pop production.

Day 24: 38 minutes of 80s pop with Cindy Lauper. The major hits from this album I remember well when I was in primary school. So there is some youth sentiment here for me, but I totally do not recognize the albumcover and never had the urge to listen to this album. It's not bad and has some catchy tunes but will probably never go back to it again. So a typical 3 start album.

6/10 Cyndi Lauper is definitely cool. She’s cool in a way that other artists try to achieve by being quirky, or attempting to be outrageous, but for Cyndi, it seems that her coolness is just down to her being completely and unapologetically herself. Yes, she is quite a kooky character, but you never get the impression that it’s an act, and the fact that she still maintains that style and character 40 years on only goes to prove it. On this, her debut record, Cyndi picks up a bunch of covers, bends them to her point of view and then augments them with a bunch of originals to create a respectable and enjoyable collection of songs. I was obviously aware of the big hitters, a fantastic selection of pop hits, of which Girls Just Want To Have Fun and Time After Time are the absolute standouts, but there’s a decent amount of depth here too. While they’re less commonly played (at least in my experience), there are four top-5 singles, as well as a couple of other, slightly less successful releases. That’s pretty damn impressive for what is essentially a 9 track (plus a 40 second 10th) album. Unfortunately, as a record from 1983, this hasn’t all completely stood the test of time. There’s bits and pieces of synth work that has dated poorly and, while the best of the record works that early 80s production palette into high quality, if cheesy, pop fare, there are moments when things fall a little flat. The Prince cover, the synth reggae of Witness and the slightly rambling I’ll Kiss You are all a bit uninspired and on those less buoyant tracks, the of-its-time production does further drag down the work. It’s a bit of a shame really, because there is some really good stuff on here and I really wanted to like it more than I actually did, but a combination of it being a little too bubble-gum for my tastes and a not completely consistent selection of songs means that it was a fun little ride that I’m unlikely to return to. But you keep being you, Cindi. The pop world needs people like you. Money Changes Everything - Holy 80s MTV, Batman! In all seriousness, this is a lovely slice of 80s new-wave pop. Cool synth lines, a solid groove and swaggering bubble-gum pop attitude. I don’t completely love it, but I can definitely see the appeal and it’s a well produced slice of pop with a touch of bite. I’m not 100% convinced by the force of Cyndi’s delivery, but hopefully I’ll settle into it as the record progresses. Girls Just Want To Have Fun - It’s an 80s pop classic. The blend of rhythms across the different instruments creates a cool shuffling groove against the straight beat. There are bundles of hooks all over this, from the main guitar riff to the chorus vocal and the “They just wanna, they just wanna-a-a”, it’s a fantastic blend of songwriting and production, with great vocal layering to keep things fresh towards the end. It’s cheesy as all hell, but isn’t that what you want from 80’s pop music? When You Were Mine - A Prince cover now. It feels a touch on the rigid side from a rhythmical point of view, especially compared to the original, which feels more fluid and groovy. It’s a touch repetitive and instrumentally thin too and, while I actually quite like Cyndi’s vocal delivery, the rest of the track doesn’t match her energy. It’s a hard one to appreciate when the original is so much better. Time After Time - Another classic now. It builds really nicely actually, and I think the arrangement is pretty interesting, ebbing and flowing until we reach the first run through the chorus more than a minute in. The interplay between bass and guitar in the chorus is really nice and adds movement set against the vocal. The main vocal hook in the chorus is excellent and, while the production is über 80s, it works really well for the song. Lovely stuff. She Bop - We get a bit of a darker vibe to this one now, which is a nice change and an interesting start to side two. There’s a bit of a Kate Bush vibe to this, but way more synth heavy. Those synth layers bring a cool, weighty presence to the production and the chorus is very good. There’s something about this that doesn’t completely convince me, though. I do like it, but it kind of feels like it could have been developed further to add a bit more range to the song and push it up a level. All Through The Night - Some more cool 80s synth action now, but melodically, this is a touch flat, particularly through the verses. The chorus isn’t bad, but almost sounds like a pre-chorus that’s going to take us to a hookier pop chorus. The synth solo is terrible though. Kind of sounds like it was a placeholder that they forgot to replace before the end of production. The general tone of the mix here is nice enough, but ultimately, it’s a fairly bland effort. Witness - There’s almost a reggae edge to the rhythms here, with the offbeat guitar work and rolling bass. There’s a decent enough groove to this, but it feels a little bit jumbled musically, like not all of the parts fully gel together, with the lead vocal in particular not particularly sitting that happily with the slightly weak synth-reggae of the instrumentation. Some 80s synth-pop has aged beautifully. This less so. I'll Kiss You - Again, this feels a little bit rambling and unfocused. There are some decent bits in there and the verses have a Talking Heads edge to them, but the chorus doesn’t deliver on the promise. It’s all very one-paced and there’s some fairly sketchy early 80s synth work that hasn’t aged particularly well, although there are some cool synth parts too. This is one that feels like it could have been developed into something decent, but she hasn’t quite found it with this production, and the record does feel like it’s winding down a bit at this point. He's So Unusual - Cyndi does her best Betty Boop. It’s a little bit of silly fun but it’s fairly inconsequential in the grand scheme of things. Yeah Yeah - This is a decent enough new-wave pop song. It’s a little one paced, but the groove isn’t bad and the chorus, while being pretty basic, is a decent enough piece of pop-melodic hook writing. The layered vocals are nice, adding a bit of depth and variety to the track. It’s not the greatest track in the world, but it definitely picks things up again for a decent little album closer.

This is my first time listening to the pop-rock album from start to finish, and I wasn’t disappointed! No feeling that I wasted my time, I felt this atmosphere of the 80s. The voice of this lady is beautiful! The musical accompaniment surprised me with its diversity. It’s true that I didn’t like a couple of tracks, but it doesn’t stop me from commenting on the album. If you’re interested in this genre, it’s a great opportunity to start right there.

Like many 80’s pop albums, Cyndi Laupers “She’s so Unusual” suffers most from sounding extremely outdated at times, there is a handful of that 80’s cheese that tends to be an instant no-go for me. However, the production here is also much better than many other 80’s albums which somewhat saves it. That and when it hits, it has some great pop songs like the iconic “Time after Time.” Bit of a mixed bag on the whole, but there’s some great pop songs to be found on this record.

Growing up in the 80's I heard only the hits of Cyndi Lauper now more than 40 years later I hear for the first time the album containing her greatest hits in The Netherlands, 'Girls Just Want To Have Fun' & 'Time After Time'. The other songs sounds familiair to the songs already known. So a trip to 80's synth memory lane but not one with a lot of depth or new insights. 3/5

Heard some before; 3.5; This is a very fun album that I feel like is a great example of 80s pop/new wave. I thought I would find this too cheesy or overdone, but it actually wasn't that bad. I actually found it to be a very tight and punchy. Lots of fun riffs and interesting sounds and the album doesn't overstay its welcome. Favorite Track: Money Changes Everything

Front loading the hits was a definite thing in the 80s, eh? The Madonna comparisons aren't really fair to either. Lauper clearly stays in a New Wave pop lane while by the time Madonna was making records she was clearly very much more influenced by club culture. For a brief moment I guess they shared some fashion influences.

I can imagine a weird girl in the 80s being too obsessed with this and acting like this is her personal bible, in an endearing way. However, as someone who does like 80s pop, I find that the instrumentals are often way weaker than the vocals. I wish they’d done more in the vein of I’ll Kiss You.

Aujourd'hui, la roulette nous crache un pur produit des années quatre-vingt. L'album s'appelle She's So Unusual et l'artiste, vous la connaissez tous, c'est Cyndi Lauper. Cet opus figure dans la liste des 1001 albums qu'il faut avoir écoutés avant de mourir, c'est un fait, on ne peut pas le contester car son nom est gravé dans le marbre de l'index de ce foutu bouquin. Mais comme je ne suis pas ici pour cirer les pompes de l'industrie ni pour réciter des communiqués de presse, je vais être d'une clarté absolue dès les premières lignes de cet article. Je lui colle la note de 3 sur 5 ni plus, ni moins. Un 3 sur 5 qui est pesé, soupesé, calculé et totalement justifié. Pourquoi cette note qui pourrait paraître tiède à certains adorateurs de la pop ? Parce que, soyons francs, je n'ai jamais été un grand fan de Cyndi à l'époque. L'hystérie fluo, les jupes qui tournent, les brushings démentiels, ce n'était tout simplement pas ma came. La pop de masse a toujours eu ce don de m'irriter quand elle en fait des caisses. Et pourtant, avec le recul et une écoute attentive aujourd'hui, je dois me rendre à l'évidence. C'est un bon album et pire encore... c'est un disque qui n'a pas trop mal vieilli. Il a conservé une fraîcheur, une dynamique qui force un certain respect. Mais attention, on ne parle pas d'un chef-d'œuvre absolu de bout en bout et mon 3 sur 5 s'explique par un déséquilibre fondamental qui plombe l'œuvre globale. Ce disque tient littéralement sur trois piliers. Trois tubes monumentaux, trois ogives nucléaires qui ont ravagé les charts mondiaux. Et excepté pour ces trois tubes extraits de l'album, le reste est malheureusement loin d'être à la hauteur. Et parlons-en de cette sainte trinité radiophonique, car c'est la locomotive du disque, le carburant qui fait tourner la machine. Quand les premières notes de ces hymnes retentissent, il est impossible de faire la gueule. « Girls Just Want to Have Fun », tout d'abord. Ce titre est une explosion immédiate d'insouciance, un hymne féministe coloré et furieusement contagieux qui a redéfini la pop de cette décennie. Cyndi Lauper y déploie une énergie de dingue, une folie vocale qui frôle l'anarchie contrôlée. Elle couine, elle hurle, elle minaude, elle maîtrise son organe avec une insolence rare. C'est le morceau-manifeste, celui qui a imposé son imagerie flashy sur MTV et braqué les charts mondiaux. Le deuxième choc s'appelle « Time After Time ». Et là on change totalement de trajectoire pour plonger dans un chef-d'œuvre absolu de mélancolie douce-amère. C'est la ballade intemporelle de la galette, d'une immense sincérité, portée par des arrangements épurés mais redoutables. Ici, elle prouve avec brio qu'elle n'est pas juste une attraction visuelle excentrique, mais une interprète et une compositrice d'une sensibilité rare, capable de suspendre le temps. Et enfin, pour fermer ce triptyque, « She Bop ». Un missile synth-pop au tempo sautillant et d'une efficacité chirurgicale. Derrière son air de comptine bondissante et ses lignes de claviers acérées se cache une audace textuelle totale pour l'époque, puisque le titre traite très ouvertement de masturbation. Un pied de nez provocateur et impertinent, emballé dans un tube calibré pour les masses. Bon, je pourrais rajouter la reprise nerveuse de "Money Changes Everything" ou la très belle ballade de Jules Shear, "All Through the Night". Mais en termes d'impact culturel massif, de puissance mélodique pure et de postérité, ce sont bien "Girls Just Want to Have Fun", "Time After Time" et "She Bop" qui constituent l'armature commerciale et artistique de cette galette. Sans ce triptyque en titane, le disque n'aurait probablement jamais passé l'hiver 1984. La production de ces trois titres est un rouleau compresseur de l'année 1983. Des synthétiseurs aiguisés, une rythmique implacable, des refrains conçus pour les stades. C'est le summum de ce que l'industrie américaine savait faire de plus efficace. Même le critique le plus cynique est obligé de s'incliner devant une telle maestria commerciale. C'est jubilatoire, c'est insolent, c'est la bande-son d'une époque d'insouciance absolue. Ces trois morceaux justifient à eux seuls la présence du disque dans le livre des 1001 albums mais c'est aussi l'arbre majestueux qui cache une forêt beaucoup plus rachitique. Car un album, par définition, c'est censé être un voyage complet, un format qui exige une consistance, une vision sur la longueur et c'est exactement là que She's So Unusual trébuche et s'étale sur le bitume. Dès que l'on sort du périmètre de sécurité des trois singles, le constat est sans appel, on se retrouve face à des pistes de remplissage qui sentent la naphtaline. Cet album est le parfait exemple du syndrome classique des disques pop de ces années-là. Les producteurs misaient tout le budget et toute la sueur sur les titres destinés à MTV, et le reste de la galette n'était là que pour justifier la vente d'un trente-trois tours au prix fort. On y entend des compositions faiblardes, des arrangements en pilotage automatique. Des morceaux qui n'ont ni la folie des tubes, ni l'émotion nécessaire pour marquer les esprits. C'est plat, c'est générique, c'est la face B de la pop qui s'oublie aussitôt écoutée. Et je refuse de m'extasier sur du vent sous prétexte qu'il y a le nom de Cyndi Lauper sur la pochette. Les titres secondaires sont des somnifères enrobés de papier cellophane criard. Ils ne font que diluer l'impact féroce des vrais hymnes du disque. Et c'est la raison qui m'empêche de lâcher un 4 ou un 5 à cette œuvre. Une galette inégale ne peut pas prétendre à la note maximale. Pourtant, malgré ces tares évidentes, je maintiens mon affirmation de départ, ce foutu disque n'a pas trop mal vieilli. Et c'est un véritable tour de force quand on y pense car la plupart des productions de 1983 sonnent aujourd'hui comme de la bouillie pour synthétiseurs bon marché. Mais si beaucoup d'artistes de l'époque sont devenus de caricaturales reliques ringardes, pourquoi Cyndi Lauper s'en sort-elle avec les honneurs ? La réponse tient en un mot : l'attitude. Le titre de l'album n'est pas mensonger : elle était vraiment inhabituelle. Elle dénotait dans un paysage pop souvent peuplé de potiches interchangeables. Elle apportait une étrangeté, une liberté de ton qui frôlait presque l'esprit punk. Et cette authenticité transpire à travers les sillons du vinyle car on sent qu'il y a un cœur qui bat sous les couches de maquillage outrancier. C'est cette étincelle de vie brute qui immunise l'album contre les ravages du temps. Sa voix n'a rien de lisse, elle est pleine d'aspérités, de hoquets, de ruptures de ton et elle donne de l'épaisseur même aux textes les plus légers. C'est ce qui sauve le disque du naufrage total lors des passages à vide. Alors oui, on peut dire que She's So Unusual est une photographie sonore d'une année charnière de la musique populaire et qu'on y entend la bascule vers une pop décomplexée, visuelle, taillée pour le câble. Mais je le répète avec force : excepté pour ces trois tubes en titane, le reste est accessoire. Je n'étais pas client à l'époque, et je ne suis pas devenu un dévot aujourd'hui. L'écoute de l'intégralité de l'album reste une expérience en dents de scie. On passe de l'excitation pure à l'ennui poli en l'espace de deux sillons. C'est frustrant, c'est irritant, mais mon avis n'est pas conçu pour faire plaisir aux nostalgiques aveugles. Pour conclure cette chronique, le verdict reste implacable. Un bon album, oui mais certainement pas un classique intouchable de bout en bout car il y a trop de déchets. Mais les morceaux forts sont d'une telle envergure qu'ils écrasent la concurrence. Ils ont survécu à la décennie, aux modes, et tournent encore en boucle partout. Rien que pour cette capacité de survie, Cyndi Lauper force mon indulgence. Mon 3 sur 5 est donc le point d'équilibre parfait entre l'admiration et la sévérité. C'est une note qui salue l'exploit pop tout en pointant les faiblesses du format. She's So Unusual reste à sa place dans la liste des 1001, mais pas sur le podium ultime.

Turns out Lauper is one of my “fine in small doses” artists. I like her take on synthpop but found her vocals a bit trying for a whole album.

La première est bien et me rassure direct Mais j’ai pas envie d’écouter GJWTHF. Finalement c’est une bonne chanson quand même Time after time aussi ! Il passe assez vite mais aussi est assez peu marquant, mais au global l’écoute est agréable ! Il y a quelque chansons plutôt désagréables genre la dernière 7/10
