Reviews (page 11 of 12)

2.4/5 This sounds like if you ordered a weird mix between CCR and Lynyrd Skynyrd on Temu. It's honestly very generic in a pretty niche setting. Not thaaaat bad, but also not my kind of beer.

Vraiment bof j'aime pas le style

Decent album. Nothing really stood out as being particularly good or bad. 2.5 rounding down.

It's not horrible, but it sure felt long for being 40 minutes.

It's always these fuckass 60s albums that have you wondering why they're on the list, until you dig a little deeper and find out that they inspired basically every artist in their generation. I can't argue with history, I suppose, but the yodeling goes too far for me personally Standouts: Whispering Pines • Jemima Surrender • King Harvest (Has Surely Come)

I was listening to this while driving around without cell reception today, so Spotify only loaded half the album. I was very excited and thought it had way more punch and energy than Songs From Big Pink. Unfortunately, I listened to the second half later and it wasn't very good.

Not my thing, thought it was pretty boring honestly, found nothing particularly impressive about it

Their second album. Rock / Country / Folk. Distinctly average Good Ol' Boys singing about Dixie, Tennessee and a harvest. Cripple Creek sounds like it's full of frogs. One and done for me on this one.

A bit boring and bland

Good one but I was so annoyed by personal reasons that I didn't even play attention, I was just expecting it to end and play Khanate instead.

2.5 Not a bad album but not something I would revisit. Most songs sound a lot like Up on Cripple Creek

Your grandpa likes this band. The kid that is close to his grandpa knows them. It's not a terrible album but it shows it age. Several times. Both musically an lyrically.

Who put the L in Band….. B(l)and!

I remember listening to this early on in my 1001 journey and wondering why these guys were on here. A year later, after getting served up countless amounts of slop, I now know not to ask that question. But yeah, anyways, this was just generic ass 60's rock to me. No different to their other album on this list. Definitely listenable but nothing here screams "interesting" to me. Plus, I got sick of listening to this. 43 minutes ended up feeling like an eternity by the time I got to the 2nd last song. I was aiming to give this a 3, but the fact that I struggled to even finish this thing detracts from my score.

Fails to distinguish itself from the previous the band album. This is as rote and routine as a colonoscopy is for their geriatric fanbase.

added whispering pines to favorites.

Meh. Nothing more to add.

This album wasn't very easy to get through for me. But I literally found myself trying to like something from each song and found myself drawn to their more clearly country - esque songs. I loved the harmonies and vibe of Rocking Chair. My rating is what it is because I'm sure people who love this type of music love this album, I would just say it is not one of my favorites.

What a boring album.

Sounds like a bad hangover and yelling at your wife until she gets you another beer

Meh not too interesting to me, don’t think I’ll relisten

Pure Americana. Late '60's folk/country. Not terribly interesting - although highly rated for some reason. Pitchfork: 10.0 Rolling Stone: Top 500 Albums #46 (2020) Best Songs Across the Great Divide The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down Up On Cripple Creek King Harvest (Has Surely Come)

Not my cup of tea.

I've never truly enjoyed a song by The Band. They're plenty talented, but this sound is just not for me. I can't even begin to parse the significance of a Canadian band rolling in Lost Cause muck when I can barely even stand to listen to The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down on a musical level.

Once again: I don’t like The Band.

Theme is old-fashioned Americana. Late 60s folk rock. Dad rock. Country flair. Nothing special or gripping.

Not really my cup of tea

Groupe inconnu. Rien de bien original dans cet album, à part peut-être l'accompagnement (section de cuivre) sur certains morceaux. Il est un peu plus rock que d'autres albums de folk/country, ce qui lui évite la note minimale. =>2/5

Unique genre for me! Some were very catchy but I won't listen again.

Includes a nostalgic song about the old south and Robert E. Lee. Not feeling the groove, don't like the album.

Americana, Country rock with organs, twangy guitars and honky tonk pianos. Not really my thing.

Who’d have thought the band by the band would be so generic and forgetful. I instantly forgot this after listening

Folk country vibes. Their music was just okay but didn't feel great. Their last song hag a better groove but other than that, it was pretty lackluster

Was ok. nothing stood out to me. 2/5

I didn’t enjoy this much at all. Whispering pines was the only song I mildly enjoyed. They may be talented musicians but I just didn’t connect with or enjoy these songs. I may be too much of a yankee.

I'm instantly turned off by folksy, country, southern sounding rock. Songs that include fiddles and lyrics about "dixie" or "creeks." This is not for me, but others seem to enjoy it.

It’s not stuff I would listen to but it was ok. It was kinda calming, it reminds me of something my parents would listen to.

For some reason several years ago I noticed that a bunch of queer people I followed online were really into The Band and I was like oh should I be into The Band too? And I tried my best to be a butch conformist for a few months but I suppose it served as proof that I have never been nor will I ever be a butch because I do not care much for The Band or the album The Band. But I am not entirely opposed to folk rock and I get the feeling they would be much more enjoyable to me if I were to hear them in a live setting during broad daylight w/ a beer in my hand. I actually do not know if butches even like The Band.

Is this the Toy Story soundtrack?

"What album is this?" "Oh this?" "This is the album The band, by the band, The band". "The band by the band the band?" "Yeah have you heard of the band the band? The band by the band is their new album."

Proto yacht rock, nothing particularly exciting

This album just sounds like if Randy Newman’s “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” was written and recorded by Buffalo Springfield or some other country folk rock band

A very bland Band.

nu tāds meh ķipa foršs vaibiņš vai ne bet es nespēju atrast kaut ko, kas man piesaistītu ilgstoši dziesmā un dziedātāja balsī

Probably a bit better than ‘Music From Big Pink’, but generally I still don’t care for The Bands unique, rustic brand of musical Americana. This is a slog. Ironically for an album whose subject matter and sound is obsessed with America and its roots, four of the five band members were Canadian.

Racist misogynistic slop

This is fine, I took off a star because this album and therefor band is not so impressive as to be THE Band.

Apparently this album was very influential to a lot of bands I love. I see inklings of why, but unfortunately the lead vocals and the organ ruin it for me. 2/5

Not for me - maybe I'm too young or non-american.

Finally my first time listening to The Band. I know they have some pretty devoted fans but this album didn't do anything for me... 2/5

Every now and then the Muppet-sounding vocalist kicks in and I can't help but laugh.

This sounded pretty dated and wasn't really all that interesting

There’s so much praise and reverence heaped on The Band, it’s hardq to know where to begin. I decided long ago not to bother, I’ll just accept they’re legendary, quite probably for good reason. I’m sure if you were watching them in a field at a festival, stoned out of your mind, semi-naked and covered in mud, they’d be quite something. However, I’m at the kitchen table looking at a spreadsheet and their effect is a little lost on me. I don’t dislike it, it just sounds pretty ordinary.

Off the cuff remark: something about the folksiness of this that grates. I get their influence on many contemporaries, work with Dylan etc but just can't wrap my ears round this with any pleasure Standout track: Whipping Pines is a little different. King Harvest holds interest. Revisit?: unlikely

This is... fine. I like The Band's popular songs... which actually might only be The Weight now that I double check. It's just a bit too honky tonk and twangy, for lack of better words. I honestly expected to like their album more. I was planning to give it a 3, but I didn't even really want to finish the last 3 songs, and I don't feel like I'm missing anything. And for that reason, it's a 2.

All dad-rock er ikke like kul nei. Kjedelig og altfor twangy for meg.

I'm sure this was influential, it was largely inoffensive but it didn't do much for me. 2 stars may be harsh but just wasn't for me really.

Now I remember why I stopped listening to Southern country rock in the 70s.

I guess you can hear their influence on later artistes. Didn't really grab me at all.

Album’s fine. Doesn’t particularly do anything that by that point in time hadn’t already been done - but, does what it aims to do well in a relatively succinct and crisp manner. Across the Great Divide (7/10) Rag Mama Rag (5/10) The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down (7/10) When You Awake (6/10) Up On Cripple Creek (6/10) Whispering Pines (5/10) Jemima Surrender (6/10) Rockin’ Chair (7/10) Look Out Cleveland (6/10) Jawbone (6/10) The Unfaithful Servant (5/10) King Harvest (Has Surely Come) (6/10) 6/10

Hitting on women by asking them to just surrender is a choice. Not a terrible listening experience (apart from Rag Mama Rag or Jemima Surrender). Just not my choice of music really.

1. Muy 60's F is For Familywy? Así. Mid-good. 2. Fun. Liked. 3. Too country boring 4. Same. Boring. 5. Funky, good. 6. No. 7, 8, 9, 10, 11: Nada que ver. No gusta. 12: Se puso funky, not bad. 2 mano.

Helt ok men inget jag reagerade på

Personally, not for me...

I honestly thought this album was just kinda trash. Didn't hear any songs I really liked, and just sat there annoyed through most of the album. They were like a bad Beatles.

I tried to get into this album when I was much younger. I'm not doing that again.

Just based on the song Up On Cripple Creek, which is the only song I knew from The Band’s self titled album, I thought I would enjoy this record. Unfortunately, The Band was very underwhelming and I only liked four songs total. The call back to older Americana just didn’t do it for me. I can only get to a 2 rating for this album. 2/5

some good songs, a little too country leaning for me

Honestly, I don't really want to hear from Bob Dylan, let alone his hugely boring back-up band or whatever.

Bit nothing to me to be honest, don’t think I’ve heard them before, but nothing really stood out to me.

Boring

Just not my kind of music.

The missed opportunity to call this "The Album" is something I will never forgive The Band for.

Well, it is what it is.

Maybe a little left of neutral.

Twangy roots apparently isn't my thing. Thought I'd like this but too often it just reminded me of the Grateful Dead.

Just sounded like classic rock. Occasionally different sounds/instruments were used than I expected to hear but mostly uneventful for me.

When I saw the uninspired name of this group, I knew this was going to be uninteresting, and I was absolutely right. If you can’t put any thought process into your group name, it’s unsurprising the music follows suit..

Average

A few cool moments and a couple of good songs weren't enough to save this ultimately uninteresting album

It's fine... Joan Baez has much better versions of a lot of these songs.

It’s ok. Not my cup of tea per se but a pleasant way to start the day. For a layman this is run at the mill country folky swampy music

I'm too much of a zoomer for this. I would listen to most of these songs again in the background, but it isn't my taste. Some creep shit lol.

Not for me. Don't particularly like the fusion of rock and country. Barely listenable.

Remarkable singer, talented musicians. Not my style of music

The hits that I've previously heard are the only tracks that stuck with me.

It is apt that The Band has such a generic name, because their sound is awfully generic. I remember very little of their music despite listening to this album twice in a row. "Across the Great Divide" may be the most memorable, but not entirely for good reasons. The twang on that titular line is spine tingling. The trumpet connecting sections is foot tappingly good. But the subject matter is odd, seemingly about a man being threatened by his wife with a gun - possibly for doing drugs and gambling all their money away. For this, she seems to be the villain, and the singer assures Molly he tried to keep his hands to himself, but just couldn't, and he'll definitely do better next time and "crawl across the great divide" This line of misogyny is found in much of the subject matter.

A nice tune here and there but not my style of music at all

custom_rating: 5

THE band. That’s it folks. Pack it up. Time to go. Once we’ve heard THE band, what is the point of continuing. The finality. The omega. The band. Apparently comes from Canada too. I’ve obviously heard a few of the radio songs that these guys produced. God bless Canadian content laws. Introduced me to the Band and of course, the real band, Loverboy. Whether you’re snuggled in beside the fire in Pugwash, or you’re in the *shudder* outside world, let’s see what The band has to say. Ugh. This isn’t great. Riverboat music. Long time readers of this *ahem* “column” should be aware of two things. Firstly, their own failing sanity, and secondly that riverboat music is how I describe music that has jaunty piano and sounds like it would go down better with a sarsaparilla and a view of the mighty Mississipp’. In other words, the worst music ever conceived. Another trip on the Tulip of Missoura or whatever. Mama. Please take me to a song that doesn’t sound like it would be enjoyed by white guys who defend plantation owners while working as waiters on their yacht. Yeah see? Civil war jams. I’m always right. Completely infallible as a reviewer. Triggered, liberals? Wait. This about the south falling. That is pretty good. The song sucks, don’t get me wrong, but hey, we love the fall of racist regimes. At least we used to. No we all just bicker over which of the billionaires have the best tasting boot. God bless ‘murica. Yeah this vocal performance was ROUGH. More bad vocal harmonies. This feels super messy. When you awake, a group of Canadians will be above you, pretending to be American in a way that is even worse than that sounds. Oh they will also be pretending to be folksy to cover up bad musicianship. Radio song. Intro to a swamp themed kids show. Swamp Critters competitor. Hey. I’m a fair man, and in fairness? This song rips hard. A drunkard’s dream if I ever did see one. The song that is. And buddy, colour me six shades of sloshed. This is a change of pace, and the vocals are slightly better than we have heard. Oh wait. Here come the horrible harmonies. This is the elusive “Sixth Harmony” that the iconic pop quintet “Fifth Harmony” tried to keep hidden. The 7th harmony beckons a slug-like deity from its cavern beneath the ocean floor and will bring about the destruction of humankind. The apocalypse is at hand!! What the hell does this mean? I’ll rip my shirt and let my river flow? I’m telling you, this music was designed for patrons of middle American steamboat revival tours. This tour is for the adults where the river is a metaphor for your dick. Now. Who wants to wear the captain’s hat. I like the folk elements of this track but the music just isn’t coming together on these tracks. Honestly? Getting away from the piano is the my favourite decision they’ve made so far. Saying “ol’ rag time Willy” a 1000 times made me want to hang myself from the plastic replica bust off the bow. Grab your partner and spin ‘er round, make sure she don’t touch the ground. Look out (American city) there will be (weather event). Look out Vilnius, there will be scattered showers over the Caspian Sea. A opening that sounds like you’re being haunted by the least talented rejects of a 1950’s doo wop casting call. The curse of the forgotten Belmonts OoOoOoOoO We WeReNt VeRy TaLEnTED OOooOoOoOoo. Jokes aside, it gets better as it goes on. But that start. Consider my timbers shivering. This is fine. I guess. I’m so bored. I laughed, I grooved, I cringed. The perfect funny song. But yeah, it’s actually kinda good. Damn guys. Why choose now to be likeable and somewhat cohesive. It even has the riverboat organ! And I like it??? I have been waiting in sufferance, and all the while, an oasis was withheld? Choking on mediocrity for 3 quarters of an hour with a cool drink of water being concealed from sight. This thing was a mess and not even close to in a charming way. I understand that these guys might look cool or whatever, but I wanted so much more from this. It just doesn’t sound good. Even later songs from this group are so much better. But hey, if you’re a man in his late 80’s fading into the final fog of dementia who is now unable to discern current reality from the dreamlike recollection of your childhood, then have I got “The Band” for you! Hoping this album got Ban(ne)d in most of the world. It came from Ontario, and it died on a steamboat outside Peoria. 1.5-2 HIGHLIGHTS: Up on Cripple Creek, King Harvest (Has Surely Come)

unfortunately the album did not excite me much.

Hated it, thankfully it was short.

Well... it's fine I guess??? For the 60's??

Some what dated

Про-ход-няк. Ничего интересного в этом альбоме я не нашел, мотивы песен не запоминаются, и по вайбу он напоминает уже просмотренный мной next, поэтому выше 2 этому альбому я не могу поставить. Проходные 2/5

This was just meh to me

2/5 Too much folk, no psychedelic rock :(

Thought the other album was much better. Seems like a lot of average 70s rock. Meh

as boring as the album and artist titles suggest.

The Band? More like The BLAND.

Interesting folksy style. The vocals weirded me out. Very Randy Newman. And the harmonies fell flat for me. I only really liked cripple creek, and that's mostly because of the drums.

Kjipare enn forventa

Ehh I like the background sounds the lyrics are not really my cup of tea

This one just didn't appeal to me

Damn, I'm gonna feel kinda bad for this one. Its just boring to me. There isn't too many musical ideas that stand out in any way. It's just a few little guitar embellishments or even a little bass lick but it just ends there for me. Nothing wrong with the vocals but again there isn't enough interesting in the way he delivers his lyrics. I'll have to figure out what to give it. A one is kinda harsh but a 2 is almost giving it too much credit. Man.... Its not unlistenable it's just too blah nothing for me. Jawbone is alright. but alright isn't too high a bar to set. 2*

Very timid folk/bluegrass. Not my type of tunes, but I don't hate it. Rather, I just won't listen to this record again intentionally. Hopefully other folks enjoy it.

Didn’t like it

Did nothing for me. Had it playing while working, but with headphones. I eventually noticed that the music stopped.

Vocals are grating, liked this much less than their debut

2.5 It’s fine. I like the voices, I like the history, I just don’t like most of the songs. Also why are a bunch of Canadians writing a song praising the Confederacy? lol

Not really my thing up until maybe the last song.

Meh. I personally don't understand the hype that The Band gets. Fairly boring album, IMO.

Not my atyle

The Band sounds like the music I grew up listening to with my Dad. Back then, nothing really stood out to me as super catchy, no lyrics stuck with me to sing along with, it was just kind of generic “Dad music” that I tolerated. Decades later, I feel exactly the same about this. I really tried to give this a couple listens, give myself the time to sit with this classic and appreciate it - but I kept finding myself slightly bored, and reaching for the skip next track button. It’s not unlistenable music, just falls flat for Rock n Roll.

Not for me

Some really fun highlights, but also a clear drop off in the second half. I like the authenticity of the sound and acoustic-ness throughout, but some tracks didn't quite hit the mark. Best Tracks: - Across The Great Divide - The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down - King Harvest Worst Tracks: - When You Awake - Jawbone Rating: 4/10

Handful of ok songs, handful of godawful songs

Ultimate road trip with your Dad music. Enjoyed listening but won’t be adding anything to a playlist or liked songs. Can understand why it’s on this list.

Bland, uninspired, and dull -- a slog to listen to. I would never play this album by choice.

Bit boring tbh

da hemmers wider - bim erste album hanis scho einigermasse verstande aber ezt langets denn hey hans gester gloset und hüt wider vergesse wies tönt hett mini ohre sind aber no dra, das heisst nachem haagsche kriterum abkomme vom Dezember 2024 am europäische hof für menscherecht und sterndli vergeh uf websites: en klassische fall vo TWEE PUNTEN!!

First, Whispering Pines is clearly a lost Flaming Lips track sent back in time. This isn't great, but it's much better than the Big Pink one.

It's a sound I really detest: country-rock. Two stars for the obvious musicianship.

Not for me, I’m afraid.

Christ, am I missing something here? This is dull music. Dull 60s white boy, mediocre music. The big 100k+ streamed songs don't make up for the tiresome process required to listen to this. Would not go through the misery of hearing this again. A tolerable song was 'Across the great divide'. Overall I didn't like it.

It’s just dull

The vocals are completely uninteresting through most of it. But otherwise it is fine.

еще один альбом 60-х, скукота

Yawn inducing

I feel like The Band is one that I never really understood why they are so well liked. They have an interesting story I suppose but that doesn't make them better at writing music. The Last Waltz film was great but that was due to the guest artists if you ask me. My father-in-law contends that Robbie Robertson is some kind of once in humanity genius and I respectfully disagree. This album is really just Canadians playing Americana/country-influenced 60s pop rock. There are plenty of bands that did the same thing that are basically indistinguishable from this. Most of the songs are fine, a few bordering on good, and a couple are basically unlistenable. 2/5

It's a bit of a bland album tbh.

Somewhat a mixture of clichéd americana and clichéd 60s rock with organ (I was gonna write "Hammond organ" but apparently it's a Lowrey). It's not bad, but it feels so generic American rock from this period that it's boring.

I did not enjoy this album.

Is it country? Is it rock? Is it folk? Does it matter? What really matters? Not this album, not to me.

I meannnnn fine. Just fine. A few boos happened. I was a fan of The Night They Drove Dixie Down but calling yourself The Band is extremely annoying and I might never get over that.

I always think I'm going to like this album (and the Band in general) more than I actually do. Its fine, well played stuff, it just never really catches my interest. Up on Cripple Creek is the one that throws it all off. Super catchy, oddly funky for Canadians in 1969, I think the rest of the album needs more of that energy. It does remind me that I still need to read "Across The Great Divide - The Band and America" by Barney Hoskyns. Suppose to be a good one about The Band.

Great, another set of scruffy looking white dudes from the 60's. I don't really remember much about THE BAND except that I think my parents had a few of their albums. Oh yeah, I had forgotten about "Up on Cripple Creek". Nothing much to day about this album. Pretty forgettable, not really what I am into normally.

Very inoffensive. It's aight. I'd expect more from an album on this list 4/10

I can barely stand this. I finished listened to the record on the third try. It's boring.

Maybe this is a timing thing but for such a seminal group and album it felt really watery and diluted. I guess it was harder to access folk, rock, soul and fusions from Black and traditional artists so everybody's rich friend's dad's favourite group of white dudes was what you had.

I have to admit to being blissfully unaware of these guys. Is my life enriched by now discovering them? No, but I am not a rednecked American who harks back to the good old days (which I am sure they are hoping the Orange will return them too!). This album could only be more American if they used guns as percussion instruments. I can see the influences that the music has and it has some high points including the vocals and rock leanings. 2.5

Too rednecky for me

I don't get much out of this type of music, and I'm afraid I found this as boring as the brown cover. The most positive phrase that came into my head was "quite nice" as in, "That bit was quite nice"; then I'd doze off again. They were probably better live.

Snooze

At first I wanted to like this album a lot as one of the songs is a classic. But in the end it kind of failed for me.

In a nutshell: Drag Mama Drag I agree with some reviewers on here - there's something lacklustre about this album compared to their debut, Music From Big Pink. Felt drawn out. The band members can jam. The lyrics are good. The singing, hit and miss. Overall: 4/10

I didn't enjoy this as much as Music from Big Pink. Their style is inherently shambolic and experimental; when they polished it up, for this album, it just lost a little something. I'm not a huge fan of this late 60s hippy Americana to begin with. If I'm in the mood, I'd reach for American Beauty (for the quality of the songs), or Music from Big Pink before coming back to this.

The self-titled album "The Band" showcases remarkable lyrical craftsmanship, weaving together storytelling and emotion that captivates the listener. However, despite its strengths in songwriting, the overall pace of the album feels sluggish and does not resonate with my personal taste. The songs, while rich in depth, often fail to maintain my interest, leading to a listening experience that feels drawn out rather than engaging.

Interesting album. Not my style at all. Early yacht rock for Rednecks? Up on Cripple Creek is an ok song but rest is pretty meh.

Should've been The Banned. Like many artists of this ilk, the country/folk aspects are repetitive and boring, and the bluesy/funky parts are good. Unfortunately, the majority of the tracks lean hard into country/folk.

I listened to this as the common clay of the new West voted in Trump. Again. I reckon The Band is quite popular in that demographic. I didn't care for this at all.

I was kind of enjoying it, and then I actually properly heard the lyrics of The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down. Who fucking cares about the suffering of southern white confederate soldiers? Fuck em, I hope they burn in hell. Go look up quotes from the confederate soldiers, they were explicitly fighting to protect slavery. Even the ones that weren't were fighting out of "obligation to their friend's and family". Obligation for what, to join in protecting slavery? I'm sure that worked real well for the nazis. Grow a spine you fucking pieces of shit. Basically, I don't care if the person in the song suffered. In fact, I hope they did. A lot. The world would've been better if all the confederates died in the war or were shot afterwards, like the traitors they were.

just didn't click. not enough melancholic hilly billy in me.

Ehhhhhhhhh

doesn't really offer much in terms of excitement. It's quite plain and boring if I'm totally honest. Not my go-to! 2/5 ⭐️

Apple described this as log cabin music but I'm not so sure. It did feel like that long live the south type music with these mountain men on the front cover but there's other rock bands I'd rather listen to in a cabin. I'm not sure if the band The Band is famous but none of the songs really connected for me. No distinct sound compared to something like CCR.

Found this really mid. I feel like I could enjoy some of these songs if they were arranged differently or maybe with a different singer. 2.5/3

Man merkt dem Album das Alter an. "The night they drove old dixie down" kenne ich nur in der deutschen Version. Ansonsten kann man das Album hören, ein Highlight ist es heutzutage nicht mehr. 2/5

Boring

It's fine music, but I absolutely cannot bring myself to care about it at all.

Unremarkable to me, background music

Strong confederate soldier loosing the war vibes. I’ve have heard The Band mentioned a lot in various musical discussions but never actually listened to them. Also never have I heard any of the songs on the album so I am still unsure what their big hits are. A bit too trailer trash core for me. Sure they are talented musicians but this just isn’t my style. 4/10

Maybe the 3 stars I gave for the previous album was too generaous. This is not great.

A decent country/rock album. Their sound has been much duplicated since their time. Best song is The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down. The rest are ok. Not totally my type of music but I appreciate the vocals and musicianship.

A band so inspiring they named themselves ‘The Band’ and released, as their second album, and album called ‘The Band’. I’m not sure what I was expecting here but it’s about as exciting as pocket fluff and while I read that they inspired the likes of Dylan, Clapton and Harrison, I’m glad they took that inspiration and turned it into something more interesting than this lot. It’s slow, ploddy country rock with one or two toe-tapping moments and a lot of meh. The Bland.

Yeh I really don't like this. That guy's voice, Levon? It's kinda like he's sounding dorky on purpose, ruins for me what might actually be fine lyrics. I'll give 2 stars for the lyrics

It feels like I'm missing something, giving The Band a mediocre review. However, this album put me on edge. I found myself irritated by the shaggy, shambly sound and Robbie Robertson's yowly, impenetrable lyrics ("Pinball machine and a queen / I nearly took the bus" - what?). In particular, the porn-funk bass of "Cripple Creek" makes the track sounds like a joke that The Band doesn't share with the listeners. Not for me.

It's decent country rock music with old timey Americana themes (played by mostly Canadians), but it's really not my thing. No song makes me want to give it a second listen. Should have stayed as a backing band for Dylan. 2⭐️

Not my tune

More like “The BLAND” by The BLAND. Am I right???

Forgettable

Jesús, I really hate this style of music. It’s that old white guy music that I associate with small town racist boomers. Cannot listen to a full song.

It's a 2.5. There were some good parts, and some not so good parts. I'm getting more clarity on how I want to rate these, but I'm struggling with this one (I really wish we had a 7-point scale), but in the end, I don't think I'll be wanting to listen to this in the future, so I rounded down.

Not my taste but I could dig it

These guys couldn’t be bothered to think of a name, or album name, or write any interesting music, or get a good album cover design, so I didn’t bother listening beyond the first few boring tracks.

Gear: Hifiman Arya Artwork: 🟫 Mix: 🤷‍♂️ Musik: 🥱 Wertung: 🟫🟫/5

The Drums on "Dixie" are great... The rest of it isn't really for me.

Love Up On Cripple Creek. The rest of it, meh.

With the exception of like, 2 songs, this sounds slight, almost demo-like. I genuinely question if Janis Joplin would have been a big deal if she hadn't died

I don't get it

Sounds like music downtrodden alcoholics would order another shot to at an empty pub off the highway somewhere. Not sure I like. Reminds me of Coen brothers or Scorsese movies, which I'm sure I like. I don't know if these guys were THE band but they definitely are A band.

Classic rock, super creative name. Not bad, I imagine if I had been a teenager in their days I might like it a lot more. The hit songs are recognizable and the others are pretty good too. Easy to listen to.

Omg this sounds like Randy Newman doing a Van Halen impression.

the band by the band. generic sounding name, fits the album as well. not terrible, not great. probably won’t revisit.

omisbaar voor folkies... misbaar voor mij

The range on this list is so incredibly limited.

Was excited for this one cuz the only song I knew by then was The Weight which is a jam and I was hoping they had some more hidden gems. Sadly no gems, just unrefined unpolished rocks you know that you just find in your yard and there’s nothing really special about them at all and your like ugh I don’t want this rock in my yard and you don’t know what to do within them cuz you don’t want a big rock pile in your yard but you feel weird throwing a rock away in the trash but do it anyway just to get rid of it. That kind of rock. THEYRE MINERALS MARIE!

not into it, too country

Genuine old people music. Keeping an open mind, it's alright. Listening to my inner music taste, it's plain bad with a couple of tolerable songs. I definitely wouldn't be caught dead listening to it.

Reminds me of honky-tonk rhythms that I imagine I’d encounter if I went back in time to a bar in the rural southern U.S. Not my genre, but an interesting listen.

And The Band played on, and on, and on, and on….

the band

I have never found The Band appealing. They've always felt bland and boring to me. Upon listening to them, again, they feel like a "poor man's Grateful Dead" in a lot of ways. "Whispering Pines" kind of sounds like a Neil Young song, though, which I like. Overall, I still can't say I like The Band or really understand why so many people love them.

Look, this music simply isn't made for me. It isn't bad necessarily, but I find the album generic. The lyrics are fine and so is the sound, but it just isn't a genre that excites me and as a result the album kinda blends into itself. The last track 'King Harvest (Has Surely Come) is definitely a highlight of the album, but as a whole it doesn't stick the landing.

Really did not care for this album. Strange combo of country and folk which didn't hit any sweet spot for me.

Boring music, bland vocals, sounds like it was recorded in someone's garage. But not actively bad

I absolutely hate Bob Dylan, so I guess they are better for not having him as the lead anymore. Still dull.

This lot were famous back in my youth for backing Bob Dylan but even that did not impress me. Country Rock was nowhere near my radar back then and still isn’t really. But listening nowerdays i can understand their popularity- just. But still, yodelling along to a mouth harp does test my full appreciation and convinces me again that it wouldn’t bother me if i never listened again. 2/5 11/5/24

Exactly what I would expect from a self-titled album by a band with such a name. Generic rock without much character.

Another tough one to rate for this listener. I mean I enjoyed my listens, but really nothing stood our other than I have heard Up On Cripple Creek. I would call this decent background work music, but in the end, nothing I would go back out and revisit. Nothing bad, just nothing stood out either. So right down the middle it is.... 2.5

2.5 The review. Honestly, I feel like my rating could go a few different directions here. A part of me kind of liked this, a part of me found it unremarkable, and a part of me thought it was way too much of the same kind of thing. Regardless, I don’t feel like it provided me much to comment on, and I don’t think it’s any kind of all-time great (maybe by Canadian standards). The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down is both kind of annoying and charming, and I couldn’t tell you how any other of these songs went if I tried. It’s certainly an interesting take on Americana given these guys hail from The Great White North, but I can’t help but feel they were probably better off when they were Bob Dylan’s backing band - nothing here holds a candle to anything off of Highway 61 Revisited.

Too country

kind of bland

I can apréciate the bands talent, but not for me

С одной стороны как бы ок, ничего такого резкого-положительного или отрицательного сказать не выходит. Но в целом это не моя музыка. Лучшая песня - The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down.

Not a fan of this one. Generic southern rock that I can in no way connect with. The lead singers voice is weak and muted. The yodeling at one point made it more interesting. All around not a fan. 1.5/5 -> 2/5.

i don't know about this album. i wanted to like it. i mean, i hear these guys' influence on music i like as someone who sometimes dips into contemporary Americana but like...it's not what i was expecting. i thought it would be more like CCR? dad day-drinking/sports watching/bbq-ing music with gently racist and misogynistic undertones. and i guess it is. but it's like....little peeks of CCR-like guitar and drum arrangements with really dull piano and vocals that make me wonder how they had so many guys in this band and none of them could sing the songs they wrote? i found the lyrics and melodies dull. the harmonies iffy. everything kind of blended together for me, including the songs people listed as their favorites here. except king harvest. that one was pretty good. I'm not old enough to remember the 60s or 70s and I didn't grow up with a Rock Dad so this isn't nostalgic for me. I'm also a non- White woman living in the US South and i'm not charmed by the romanticization of the past in the US. to me, this is peak guys who make music for White people who are too scared and/or racist to listen to music that's actually adventurous and innovative. or even more earnest and more lyrically masterful. i found myself wishing this were a dylan or allman brothers or CSNY/some combination thereof album instead. as i search for something positive to end on, ill say i liked some of the mandolin parts. i thought it was a good length and the sequencing made sense. i feel like i "get" who these guys are now and they're...just not for me. but i understand why this is on here.

Den lyssningen kom och gick. När skivan var slut spelades For What It's Worth med Buffalo Springfield.

Yet another case of not my style. Listens: 1 Rating: 2

I'm not a fan of folk music, so there wasn't much here I enjoyed. The biggest thing holdng me back on this album is the singer, he just isn't very good. A lot of the songs sounded very generic and ended up sounding repetitive. But that may be due to my lack of experience in folk music.

It was okay. I’m neutral on it and I didn’t listen to the whole thing.

# 206 : I don't love it. I don't hate it, it is ok but it's not particularly exciting and doesn't have anything catchy enough to make me want to give it a second listen. Yawn

2/5 There's a peppering of good moments, but it's just not for me. Perhaps I need a sunny day and a cold american beer to better enjoy it. But even then, I think I'd much rather listen to Crosby Stills and Nash.

Not for me

Ok, but not for me 2/5

This is a rather dull album of country inflected rock, with insipid lyrics.

This sounds competent for what it is, but I don’t feel connected to it at all. I feel like it would be good playing on a jukebox in a bar, or something. But just not my playlist.

I'm biased, not crazy about a lot of 60's and 70's music...older is good, newer is good, but that timeframe just doesn't do much for me.

Not my cup of tea 2.4

Idk man, ik snap ergens wel dat t goeie muziek is ofzo, maar vind t saai

Pretty boring

This is the kind of music that plays in a small town bar at 2pm on a Tuesday.

Not bad. Not essential.

just not for me.

De typische jaren '70 sound. Ik vind het niet heel bijzonder eigenlijk. **

The band (no pun intended) has a few catchy tunes including a few on this album. Much like SD, I never had the need to own it, but the hits added to certain mixes I was around. Kind of swampy jug-band sound you would hear in the deep south on a random front porch, saloon, or town square. Other than the hits, overall I was pretty bored with the rest of it but a mellow listen. Interesting note: My favorite song from this band , “The Weight”, was redone with a click track sent to musicians around the world then later the video and audio were mixed together in a series called “Playing for Change”. Features most notably Robbie Robertson and Ringo Star. Check it out on YouTube if it strikes you… 2.5/5 rounded down to 2

The Bland. While yes their music might make the listener feel right at home on a sweaty porch drinking a Dixie beer or as Kevin Kline’s understudy in The Big Chill, but I simply never got it. And this collection of sound-alike songs of southern snooze rock did not change my mind nor make me reach for that second beer.

More like The Bland…. Nothing remotely remarkable about this. I didn’t mind it, but overall such an average band and average album.

Know their hits but never listened to a full album. Now I have. About what I’d expect. Minus points for least creative name.

While this album has a few of catchy song that grabbed my attention, it fell short in terms of overall replay value.

No idea why I had to listen to this before I die. Perfectly forgettable. 2/5

Best Song: King Harvest. There's almost a funky quality to this track... why'd they tuck it away at the end of the album? Worst Song: Rockin' Chair. This just sounds like a worse Randy Newman song. Overall: Boy did this feel a lot longer than 43 minutes.

I feel like a lost of the magic of these late 60s rock bands are really lost on me.

I feel like I have heard this exact album a few times now through the 1001 albums. Nothing exciting about it

Not sure why but this didn't stand out or stick one bit for me. Didn't find any song I liked.

Lots of duds on this record. Some songs had promise, but an overall unpleasant experience.

Boring ah music good backround noise tho

Well that answers my question of "what if the Rolling Stones had no talent?" 1.5*

whispering pines is the only tolerable one for me

Hillbilly anthem rock.

Could not get into this. Maybe it would grow on me with more listens, but I don’t feel motivated to listen again.

Sounds like a discount Old Crow Medicine Show. GF: It sounds like someone forgot about the deadline for their submission for 1001 Albums, panicked, googled "Bands" and submitted the first thing that came up.

Everything sounds like a 70's sitcom theme song.

Meh. Probably before their time at the time or something.

Day 28. Yesterday was hard. This whole thing may indeed be a challenge. On to the next piece of... Americana, again. Sigh. The Band. All sepia, "leather" "bound", looking like they just staked a gold mining claim... how old-timey! Well I was born an ocean away from anything this stuff wants to make me feel nostalgic for, then or now. While I'm at it, I could really do without this Roots Rock Country for at least two weeks? Please? There have been pleasant surprises, but I'm Up On Fatigue Creek here. badumtsh. This specimen? Just excruciatingly boring. Whispering Pines was rather pretty, I've had the old Old Dixie earworm (Baez' version) a couple of times throughout my life and didn't mind it but by and large, this is little more than elevator music for forgotten roadside diners. I'm sure this has a place in another country's music history, somehow, but I have no use for it.

Maybe i am to young to get used to this music. Good to listen when doing the dishes?

This isn't as bad as I remember it from earlier attempts to listen to The Band. I can definitely see why it's an important album from the perspective of the development of country-rock in the late 60s and 70s. I can see how it was a very different vibe from what else was going on with rock in 1969. But I don't have to like it. I get Richard-Manuel-fatigue right away in each song he sings. I HATE the sloppy rhythms of "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down." Garth Hudson's organ and piano are generally fun on any track, however.

I want to thank the algorithm for swinging back to music 50 years and older…first track sounded like a theme song to a 70s show or a Disney jamboree show.

I like them in theory. Actually they feel like a throwback to the worst version of 70s man.

Not that it was unpleasant but there was nothing to grab onto from this album

Can see how it may have influenced some 70’s rock but sounds dated.

Kjipare enn forventa

Maybe it's my lack of attachment to the era but this group and album do very little for me. We are over 50 years removed from the (late) sixties and I just don't care anymore. It's well produced and sounds fine but these songs are boring to me. The Band more like The Bland.

duplicate

Some old barroom favorites.

It starts with "Across The Great Divide". Very Tweedle Dum-Tweedle Di. Same with Rag Mama Rag. In fairness, The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down is a really good track. When You Awake has all the appeal of Yellow Submarine... i.e. none. The only other half decent track was Jemima Surrender. Just two decent tracks in the entire album. At least that's better than none, so it gets a 2 rather than a 1

Definitely a product of its time and age. An easy album to listen to but not a terribly memorable one. The Unfaithful Servent was my favorite track. If someone put this record on I wouldn't protest but I wouldn't be the one selecting it.

Absolutely not for me, I was surprised to see this was from '69...could've understood this earlier in the decade but not really picking up why this was so innovative/influential.

Opening song had me convinced it was the opening to a shitty sitcom. This record did not resonate with me. It just sounds like slow dirty hill music. Which is fine. But nothing special really.

Langweilig

Klassisches Country / Folk Album ohne Ecken und Kanten

It's fine

Okay in the background but nothing special

Didn't seem that well resolved to me. A bit all over the place.

The Bland strikes again.

Meh, not for me

Forgettable

Upbeat and modern sounding for the era, but not one that's left an impression

could not be more middle of the road

Not my cup of tea

Unfortunately, not for me. Having it on in the background as a chill presence in the room? All good. Actively listening? Unengaging for me. I may have a hard time separating records like this that helped originate these Americana sorts of sounds from the legions of hokey imitators that followed in the years after. Either way, I couldn’t really get into it. Certainly didn’t hate it, but it failed to capture my attention. Top tracks: The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, Jemima Surrender, King Harvest

Across The Great Divide - this is definitely a song. a lot more on the gospel side of a blues/rock song than i expected. (3/5 so far middle of the road and not jumping out at me) Rag Mama Rag - i like the big band sound. a little surprised to hear a tuba. it was actually a saxophone. (4/5 for the brass) TNTDOD - i can't tell if this is satire 2/5 When You Wake - i don't know why this sounds like psychedelic country almost? (3/5 this is what i could see a 60 year old listening to that might ride a harley) UOCC - i think i don't like this. (2/5 its getting samey) Whispering Pines - it's almost like a church song and i hate it (2/5) Jemima Surrender - nah (1/5 this is not as sexy as you think it sounds) Rockin' Chair - i'm getting pretty bored of this album now (2/5 i cannot relate to this at all) Look Out Cleveland - a pick up in energy. i can see this playing in a bar that is honestly just somebody's barn. (2/5 this is pretty predictable at this point though) Jawbone - lean really far away again please. (1/5 i can't keep doing this. oh my god it's 4 minutes. Bluey theme) The Unfaithful Servant - oh boo hoo. appreciate things while you have something or whatever. (2/5 the sax being used for train sounds was very good. that's it though) King Harvest - a way to close out the album. sure 3/5 i guess i feel like i listened to the same song at different points for 40 minutes. the blues rock n' roll thing wears me down really fast. due to personal taste i put this at 2/5. if you like the blues + classic rock n' roll sound mixed in with country you will like this.

Kind of fun! Liked the motown/honky tonk vibe to it. It didn't hold my full attention and I found it mildly enjoyable rather than a proper set of anthems

- meist sehr entspannt - ganz coole Rock, Country und Blues Mischung - The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down klang ein wenig, als würde Kermit singen - ab der Mitte hat es mich irgendwie verloren Rating: 2 / 5

Should’ve been called ‘the album’, might’ve got a third star

I can appreciate the musicianship but not really my cup of tea. Started off slow, and only slightly picked up for me.

A little too boring for me honestly, unfortunately.

I think soul music is too slow for me.

It started off pretty laid back, not something I’d choose to listen to, but would definitely leave playing. Song three though appears to be a lament for the good ‘ol’ days of the confederacy, and I couldn’t really get past that.
