Reviews (page 9 of 12)

This is country music that, contrary to my usual reservations about this music, I can listen to well. I was pleased to be able to listen to The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down. I had only heard cover versions before, including the German fake version by Juliane Werding. Although it certainly wasn't a waste of time, I probably won't be listening to the album again any time soon. 3/5

Mostly pleasant folk & country rock. Coming in with newer ears, I honestly hear a twinge of Adam Duritz from the Counting Crows in the vocals. Not much stood out, though. Couldn't tell what the singles were, if there were even any. "Up on Cripple Creek" was maybe the closest thing.

sweet tea

If you aren’t Canadian, you probably assume The Band is from the Deep South. When they are at their best, they might actually be the best version of Southern rock, despite being from Toronto. The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down is a perfect example, but the rest is just decent. 7.0/10

This album grew on me. The lead singer's voice reminded me of The Counting Crow's singer.

Pretty classic. Some great songs.

The songs' endings are so weird? Like the story is still being told when it abruptly fades

I really enjoyed Rag Mama Rag, The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down and Jawbone (that piano interlude between lines!). Quite a good album with a consistent song style, worthy of a repeat listen, a high 3/5 overall.

Meh. It was an okay background music. Better than the first album tho.

Fun for what it is. Thought this band was better given the reputation.

A solid relistening to that classic rock era.

Not as good as I was hoping it would be

The long term influence of the first two Band albums can't be overstated - even reaching modern bands that I adore. But... but...for some reason I have never been able to find a way in. Sounds weird to say for a band like this but I just don't connect emotionally. I appreciate it. I respect it. I see why it's good. I know it's good. I just don't love it. That being said - When You Awake and Jemina Surrender are great tunes so maybe some day...

Some good ole mountain music. Nothing like driving through the Appalachian Mountains while having this album on. Overall, not something I would normally listen to, but there’s always a setting that this music just makes sense. Except for the Confederacy part… but hey, freedom l, am I right?? Yeehaw

Surprisingly enjoyed it. Would be interested to hear the background of these guys. Nothing groundbreaking, but a pleasant listen.

There have been some 60s rock albums that we’ve come across that have left me wanting more, and this wasn’t one of them. Great vibes, chord progressions that catch your attention, and a good mix of blues and rock. I think if there were one or two more songs I really liked I’d give it a four without question, but I feel comfortable sticking with a three.

Solid album, but no standout hits. Could easily have it on in the background anytime.

A very twangy country rock album. I enjoyed quite a bit of it, but sometimes I just got sick of how truly twangy it can get. So much twang.

Sometimes simplicity is best. The band played the music. But it’s pretty good folk rock music from a simpler time. This is similar to contemporary Americana but back in the 60s this was significantly more of a popular style. The old school folk rock style is done best by the band on this album. Worth revisiting but not outstanding. 6.5/10

Funny album for me. First time I heard it I didn’t get why it was universally loved. Enjoyed it a lot more this time, the emotion in the vocals a highlight though out. Also, the “concept” leanings of the songwriting resonated more, with great images of characters from the U.S.’s Civil War era. Great guitar work on Jawbone.

Fun album with a mix of rock and blues and very 60s/70s vibe.

Actually does a great job of finding it's own genere. Enjoyable tracks that switch it to just enough.

Really good music backing loads of cheesy rhyming pairs. Also weird song about the confederacy especially when I thought these guys were Canadian

Average laid back American rock. They're good at what they do, but doesn't do much for me 3/5

I had to do some research to know how to feel about these guys. Their music is good, if not a little antiquated feeling (even for their era) in places. But “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down” reeked of Confederate sympathy. I know they’re a southern rock band, and that sometimes, especially back then, that sort of came with the territory (see: Lynyrd Skynyrd). Nothing I read told me that this was the case with these guys, but still. I tread with caution. The album is good. A great example of its genre, and crafted by a group of musicians that are all excellent at what they do. Everything feels in its proper place, like a plan was drawn up and then executed. It doesn’t feel overproduced or over engineered at all. It just is. The songs feel like they were always as they are here, that they didn’t come from nothingness and then slowly crafted into existence. It’s that ease that gives the album its charm, and gives the listener an invitation to just enjoy what’s presented here. I enjoyed a handful of songs here (see below), but I can’t say I was blown away by anything. I even listened twice to be sure. The Band are clearly very talented (you’d better be if your name is “The Band”), but I doubt this is their best work. Three stars. Standout tracks: Across the Great Divide, Up On Cripple Creek, Whispering Pines, Lookout Cleveland

Pretty alright all around. The type of album that's good to just put on in the background.

I liked this. I didn't know the couple singles were The Band, but I knew them already. I wasn't in love, but it's a solid album. 3.49/5

This was an easy listen. I felt like I could be listening to different albums throughout because each song kind of had its own sound. They remind me of classic rock that I listened to growing up with my parents, but I don’t think I ever listened to them, specifically. I would give us another listen!

Not too bad, but not exactly great either. Some troubling lyrics but music generally OK.

Quite good album - not too much country style (like the later albums). Therefore 3 stars

Quite decent album, but nothing mindblowing

I swear 1969 is this website’s favorite year. I’ve gotten so many albums from this year. Anyways, this one is super mid. Sounds like a typical 1969 blues rock album. That’s about it.

Not my usual vibe but still can appreciate it! Maybe not regular listening and I know that’s been the case with quite a few albums, but I can still appreciate it.

This is my second and final album by The Band to review. I really didn't care for Music From Big Pink, so I didn't have high hopes heading into this one. I thought this self-titled effort was fine, and I enjoyed it more than Music From Big Pink. Musically, I thought this album was pretty well made. I enjoyed the clavinet and organ playing, and I felt like they both gave this album a distinct feeling. The sounds of the clavinet and organ really helped give this album a unifying feel, and it really helped create a physical setting through sound. The songwriting on this album was pretty good as well, and "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down," "Across The Great Divide," and "King Harvest" were among the best tracks on the album. "Look Out Cleveland" was pretty good too, and I liked how it alternated between piano and guitars driving the melody. Also, it's hard not to like any song that mentions my hometown of Houston. The biggest detractors on this album for me were the vocals and the fact that a good stretch of the album was pretty boring. There were times where I felt like the vocals worked well, but most of the time, I really didn't care for them. I think the singing just felt flat to me. The middle part of the album really dragged for me, and I felt like a lot of those songs just felt like generic folk rock. Still, this album was fine, but it's definitely not something I'd revisit.

The night they drove old Dixie down är en fantastisk låt. Övriga låtar är väl inte fantastiska dock. Ändock en stabil trea.

I've always suspected I'm not super into The Band and now here we are. Fine. Medium. 2.5

A couple of good songs, but this style of folk rock never spoke to me. The Weight almost carries this album though.

The Band

Good album

The Band makes some good cozy country folk rock music. Like the folk-alternative to Skynyrd. Just an all-time classic band with some great tunes! They deserved more credit than they ever earned during their time. Standout Tracks: The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, Up on Cripple Creek

5/3/24. Good and fun late 60s rock record. I believe this represents the sound of a straight up rock and roll record at the time.

Wish i could do 2.5 but 3 works.

would love some more variance in the band's sound throughout this album; I liked Music from Big Pink much more, although this one has its gems

Meh, fine. I liked Whispering Pines a lot, a bit Neil Young-y, but otherwise a bit boring.

I was hopeful, so I was disappointed.

Cripple Creek is a great song, but the non-hits are all extremely forgettable. Was really hoping to like this.

Was alri, didn't finish tho

Okayish Country Rock. Would'nt listen a second time.

Good Songs sounds Old

>>>>>>>>>>>> <<<<<<<<<<<< >>>>>>>>>>>>

This was a fun listen, I can vibe with it

Liked a lot of it

Good for it's time.

It's got some OK stuff hiding betwixt the twang

This album started pretty boring to me and I didn't really care for either of the big songs from it, The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down or Up On Cripple Creek. I did quite like some of the other songs though, like Whispering Pines, The Unfaithful Servant, and King Harvest. Don't think I'll be coming back to the band anytime soon though.

It was OK

This was fine. I thought it would be lazier given their efforts bending the band and promotion in general but it has a few decent tracks and a few thst were forgotten as soon as finished

The Band are never bad but the also rarely get out of 3rd gear

Quite forgettable but pleasant enough

Couple of good songs, overall not bad, not incredible.

Have I heard this album before? No Highlights: Across the Great Divide, Rag Mama Rag, The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, Up On Cripple Creek, Jemima Surrender Rating: 7.4/10 It’s an interesting listen with different members of the band singing each song. Nothing on here really blew me away, and I think Music From Big Pink is a stronger effort. For me this is just a solid folk rock record.

A very country Americana vibe. This would go crazy to some southern college boys near a lake drinkin some brews

Not much to say, I liked it but didn’t love it and most likely wouldn’t revisit again

Another band I’m surprised I’d never heard of before! Not quite my style but might grow on me as I go deeper into their discography.

2.5 stars

Mostly boring

Liked it, I feel that with a replay I would rate it higher

So...The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down. Racist or naw? I'm going with no since it was written by a Canadian bro...but I guess Canadians can be just as racist as the next bloke. Anyways, I thought this was a pretty decent and easy listen. Didn't blow my mind, but a couple enjoyable and recognizable songs. Def something I wouldn't mind listening to again. 3.5/5

gimme real shit

no estuvo mal

A nice comfy down home good time. How good a time? That depends on how down homey you like to get, I suppose. You at least have to respect the monster hits.

Why does it sound like the vocalist is in another room shouting, and the second vocalist is even further away shouting harder. The vocals really started to annoy, the music became quite stale after a while. Some good songs but an overall meh expierence

Kinda unremarkable, but not bad vibes

Quite Bob Dylan-y. Not bad!

It has that classic late 60s and early 70s country rock sound which is kinda nice, easy to listen to

schöner End-1960er RockRoll

The Band, The Album, The Songs. It feels that the generic name of this "musical group" is adequate to the content of this album. Okayish songs, some nice melodies on multiple instruments, an at times off-putting vocal. But overall, nothing stands out, for the better or worse. Just a forgettable experience.

The song “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down” is the best on the album, but even for that song the covers of it are better than the original.

Påminner of en del om Neil Young. Trevlig bakgrundsmusik. Jemima Surrender är dock creepy.

Folkrock.

There is no genre that I would ever deny outright. I have notiiced over my lifietime that every time I decide I don't like X genre, that I like something in it. This includes southern rock. In fact, it even includes several songs by The Band itself. However, southern rock is not among my favorite genres and outside a few outlying songs I am not really a fan. This album could metaphorically sum up my interest in the genre. Most of it is "meh" to me and a couple songs prop it up.

I'm getting quite tired of folk/soft rock, we've had quite a few of this music of late. This was an ok listen but nothing special. "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" is a great song and deserves being on this list, the rest was pretty meh, although I also liked "Look Out Cleveland" which stood out also as a better song than the others. 5 star for "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" 2 start for the rest, giving it a 3.

C'était brun mais du bon brun.

Interesting, dated, country'ish stuff

Honestly I wanted to like this because it's funky but something about it is too country sounding for me. Before people judge, I know it's rock and roll but the Americana has too much twang for me.

nice naman but unmemorable

Its a 2.5 for me. Had to listen twice.

Solid album. Great vibe. I love the how incorporated the drum fills are and the organ. My favorite songs were ones with piano. Super upbeat and happy. 6/10

Fun album

i mean i love the chill vibes but too blunt even after multiple listens

The twangy lyrics, and foot stomping beats make it feel a bit more southern than standard folk rock. Driving piano in "Jawbone" is upbeat fun. Standout is "Up on Cripple Creek".

Cripple Creek is still a banger, the rest is fine. 2.9

Terrific passing the time music.

It was ok for some background music.

Enjoyed the album but won’t make the rotation. A good album, well crafted songs, but nothing super special but like more songs than disliked. 3/5

Meh, not sure about the hype here.

Didn’t make it all the way through but enjoyed. For some reason I just don’t really get into it

I accidentally played this almost the whole way through for a second time without realising, says a bit

Pleasant enough to listen to.

The Band were great... for a time. Some songs are classics, but the others are very ordinary...

Album #2 This was a nice album. Not my typical kind of thing, but I enjoyed it for the most part. I didn’t think it was necessarily anything too special, but I liked songs like Whispering Pines, Jawbone, and When You Awake.

Reasonably good tunes on this album! Its definitely not my preferred genre, but I enjoyed listening through. Lots of unique tracks, some folksy vibes, hint of early era rock. The Band, never heard of them before. Exceedingly decent.

Great sophomore album from these guys - lots of wonderful songs including a favorite that I forget about, 'Up on Cripple Creek'. Great 60s rock though it doesn't really feel like anything is too earth-shatteringly experimental, especially considering everything else going on at that time, but it's still a great album. 3/5

it was alright, i was printing while listening so i didn't get the names of any tracks i really liked, it was a pleasant listen

A couple catchy songs, mostly just a bunch of sludge to sit through

Straight rock.

Tranquila. Llevadera. Folk rock.

Me gusto menos que Anne Fitzgerald

Some of these are absolute classics, but a few really dragged the album down.

Country regulinchi enjoyable

Favorite Songs: The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down Jemima Surrender Absolutely solid folk rock album but few songs that really excited me.

The twangy lyrics, and foot stomping beats make it feel a bit more southern than standard folk rock. Driving piano in "Jawbone" is upbeat fun. Standout is "Up on Cripple Creek".

I really wanted to be more into it than I was. But it was just kind of average at best. Not very memorable, maybe I wasn’t really paying enough attention but I just wasn’t into it. 5/10 Top 2: 1. Look Out Cleveland 2. The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down

Meh..they sound like a garage band

what can you say, another solid 60s rock album

3/5. The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down really is the star on this album and that’s what pushes this rather mediocre album to a 3 star rating.

Wasn't in a mood to listen to this as I never really liked The Band, but I gave it a shot. Musically, great. But my taste hasn't changed and I'm glad I'm finished listening to it.

Solid rock album, glad it had some personality to it and wasn't a generic album. The band certainly has their own unique sound and I appreciate them for it. My fa orite songs were up on cripple Creek, jemima surrender and jawbone.

Kan ikke helt huske

Good. Enjoyed it.

honky tonk

It's nice. Heartfelt, bluesy trad rock. It passed by pleasantly but I don't know if I could pick a track out if I heard it again. The band definitely have a few great songs, but only the closer on this is one of them.

Good stuff, definitely wouldn’t be ‘band’ from my playlist.

Folky, funky. Not necessarily my type of music and the song sound a bit samey to me. Not sure if I don’t have an appreciation for this album just because other things I’ve heard are a derivation of these guys.

Enjoyed the callback themes and another good entry for 1969 but didn't break through for me

wel een lekker album

Missing the The Weight, but otherwise fine.

Much better than I expected. Not some bland 60s folk rock, but actually had some great songwriting and performances, plenty of extra instrumentation to flesh the songs out too. Kept my attention the whole time. Can't bring myself to give it a 4 though as it wasn't blowing me away, and it's not really the sort of stuff i'm too used to, but a good album nonetheless.

Really really wanted to give them 2 stars because the Confederate song pissed me off so bad but I do mildly enjoy some of the songs. King Harvest is a great closer. Do you know that that one Village Voice critic said this was the best album of the year, beating out Abbey Road? Imagine if Paul had made Her Majesty be a sad song about a British person who suffered because colonialism ended or whatever the fuck. Give me a BREAK!

1. 3/5 2. 3/5 3. 3/5 4. 3/5 5. 3.5/5 6. 3/5 7. 3/5 8. 2.5/5 9. 3/5 10. 3.5/5 11. 2.5/5 12. 3/5 = 3/5

For most of this album, it was a pretty clear 2 for me. But the last 3 songs push it to a low 3. i'm just not american enough for this I guess, most of it I found to be pretty uninteresting. Maybe they were really revolutionary for a style that has become a convention later but it still feels really generic for most of the album

Cool to have

Good stuff

It was fine, not anything I'd seek out again but I didn't mind listening. If I could do half stars it would probably be like 2.5 but I'll generously round it up to 3.

Solid album by the band.

Was hoping to enjoy this more than I did, still not bad though. 3.5

not bad, just kinda dull

Some sort of loose jamminess was missed from the first album, but it was still a nice Americana vibe.

Didn't get a chance to really dig into this album, but I would like to revisit it.

nice rock

The Band is the second album by the Canadian-American rock band the Band. It is an Americana concept album focusing on people, places, and traditions, and the music genre is similar to folk/country rock. Critically acclaimed, this album contains many of the Band's best known songs and performed well commercially at release. This is a great album of folksy music from the late 60's. The songs are fun and some are really good like "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" and "Up on Cripple Creek". This is a classic Americana album and may be the best Band album, so give it a listen!

Has some good songs.

weird to hear some guys from ontario cosplaying as kentuckians the night they drove old dixie down jemima surrender the unfaithful servant

Alright, never heard of them before.

I have forgotten this album only three days after listening to it.Neither bad nor good.

It's definitely The Band.

My first 60s album Didn’t expect to enjoy it

Good enough but a bit tame for my general tastes.

big Crosby Stills and Nash vibes for sure, Stones too, the Americana and blues rifts are good, but didn't hook me

I feel very neutrally about this one. I can work with how it leans into folk vibes, not bad there. First song is pretty good, the rest were fairly forgettable to me. 3

I really like Up On Cripple Creek. & then Look Out Cleveland came on and it brought me back to Goose at Terminal 5 when they covered this song. Absolute ripper of a song! LFG. The rest of the album wasn’t too too memorable tbh

me copó bastante ah 7.5/10

Not bad. Could really hear the influence of Blues, Gospel and maybe soul.

Feels like a compilation rather than a complete album. Still got several of the hits

Who could have guessed that a band named "The Band" would be incredibly boring and middle-of-the-road dad rock? I mean... it's alright. It's competent. It's just not exciting in any way shape or form. 2.5 rounded up

Generic Americana. Pleasant listening, won't blow you away

This album is among the roots of seventies Southern rock. It's good, but seventies southern rock is just not my thing.

The band...

Nothing I hated but also not particularly inspiring

Fascinating. Dixie especially, the political shifts. And the cool time signature stuff.

meh. notbad either

Didn't think I'd like it but it has a very nice vibe. Vocals are top notch and some lovely acoustic guitar work. Favourite song: The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down

How many of them are the lead singer? Oh, cripple creek. Classic. Would give this a two and definitely won't listen again. Up it one point though, 3/5, but only for cripple creek.

This album started off great and then the back half is really boring.

Never heard of this band. 'Bout to listen ! Okay it's good but nothing too impressive. You can really hear the Beatles influence on this one. It's just not really my thing. 5/10

I've actually listened to this album before on a list of the greatest 100 albums of all time.... To me it kinda sounds of it's time but equally not too dated. I think the album starts well, but does tail off as it goes on and by the end I had had enough. My favorite tracks were: Across the great divide Rag mama rag Up on cripple Creek

First listen Saved 7/12 Top track: King Harvest (Has Surely Come)

yeah ok whatever

Just listened to this a few weeks back when Robbie Robertson died. Good stuff.

I enjoyed this, but also think the music is a bit generic and I’m unlikely to return often.

Folk-rock. Ni fu ni fa.

Folk-Rock. Bien.

Enjoyable enough. Felt like somewhere between The Beatles and The Eagles.

i'd enjoy it a lot more if i was drinking whiskey on my porch or at a woodstock festival with the boys, but folk rock isn't my thing in general

Enjoyed

I like this one more than Music from Big Pink. Good selection of classic country rock jams. 3.5/5

At the risk of sounding like a certain political leader, The Band is a band full of members that make up The Band. I’ve never really understood why folks think that The Band is so influential. To me, the music sounds a lot like other rock music that was put out at that time. Don’t get me wrong, it’s good rock music but I just don’t see how The Band influenced the acts that succeeded them. But what do I know? I am sure that some music critic, who declared this album “one of the most influential albums of all time” knows. My favorite tracks are “Across the Great Divide” and “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down”.

You know, I didn't mind this. It's not something I would listen to on my own, but if it were a road trip and someone put it on, I would listen.

Niet bijzonder, wel leuk!

how are you gonna call yourself "The Band" but not call your album "The Album" ???

After all these years, I’ve never got it. There are hundreds of albums from the seventies which I like more.

3/5 I started this project because I wanted to broaden my musical horizons and to be exposed to new music that will change my life. This is just not one of those bands. Sure they had good enough technical skill, and the music sounded ok. But when you know a song because another artist did it better, it makes me question the importance of an album. I'm sorry to be harsh, but they weren't The Band. They were just "A Band."

The band. Maybe "A Band" would be more accurate, as these guys were unremarkable to me. Not terrible, not great.

Not sure about this album, gave it at least two listens as I usually do but nothing stood out, just an average album to me

Is this where Americana came from? It's just not really for me. Maybe it takes a few listens, but I don't have the time or patience for that. Maybe I'll enjoy the debut since there's a few songs on it I actually know. Whispering Pines was alright, a bit Brian Wilsony. Look out Cleveland was alright, wouldn't be out of place on the Big Lebowski soundtrack. Actually the second half of this album is much better than the 1st. Or perhaps I acclimatised. Because of this I gave it another listen later on in the evening, and I still didn't much like the first two tracks. After that, it's a whole mood, I could grow to like this quite a bit. When You Awake just fades away when tbh I want more... I'm torn, there's great tracks here, and some I'm just not feeling. But would I given time... Unfaithful Servant is a slow burn banger. I think that leaves me with a stronger impression at the end of the album than the album does overall. Loads of words not saying anything from me there.

Well, not my style, but I see the appeal to those who sung their praises in the 80s. Folk, predecessor to southern rock, I hear it, I like understanding the lineage through the songs.

Fairly familiar with this album, very very familiar with certain tunes. I'd agree this is an album everyone should hear at some point. These days, the production seems very "open" i.e. the sound isn't very layered, so it is a sparse recording... it is both soulful and yet obviously a studio recording. There are classic tunes on this record, but I like Big Pink better.

Album 102 of 1001 The Band - The Band Rating : 3.5 / 5 Favorite Track : Up On Cripple Creek I find myself comparing this to their 'Big Pink' album, which was awesome. Their 2 big hits from this album are unquestionably great. The others hold their own, as well. Not as powerful as their 1st album but still enjoyable, without a doubt. I really wanted to go 4 on this on, but can't seem to do it. A delightful album, though.

I'm not a fan of folksy country rock but this has one of the most iconic songs of this genre and it's by a cracking legendary band sob that must be acknowledged

It was alright

im not all that country or blues but these guys were alright

Screwing with database is since the 1960's these guys clearly were experimental and willing to mix different styles which I guess that's why it's in this list it's a Fusion kind of crossover in a bit of Bluegrass mix it country mixed with I don't know probably do I love it no do I hate it no it's it's ok soft background country 20 fun stuff 600mm

For those about to drop, I have mixed feelings about whether to recommend this for your death list. While I prefer the Brown over the Pink, a lot of this has not aged well and it goes to Robbie taking over the song writing. Two things: one he never could write an album's worth of material and two, the other band members were clocking out for a range of reasons, drugs, booze and I think a sense that Robbie and Albert Grossman were pulling a scam on the publishing (they were right). Robbie himself admits that so many of his songs were completed with the other band members, Garth in particular telling him where to next on chords etc. What is good is great: the three lead vocalists and the harmonies, just brilliant. I'm not a big fan of Richard's lead, but Rick and Levon are amazing and do some of their best work with these tunes. Rockin Chair and Rag Mama are straight out white boy Americana and Cripple Creek is almost biblical in its tone and tenor, Robbie's finest lyric. The Night They Drove, is an interesting take on the demise of the slave autocracy, a white boy's lament on the death of his brother and what he knew, written by a Canadian through the eyes of an Arkansan son of the post Reconstruction South. Knowing the poverty that Levon grew up in, this is more a meditation on how it is that the disadvantage do the fighting, and Virgil wondering what that was all about, except for a reverence for that old slaver Lee. Fundamentally anti war, reflecting yet again the futility of Vietnam. Lyrically interesting, but a dirge like tune that has not aged well, and is of course sullied by Baez's out right weird cover, makes me ill just thinking about it.

When I signed up for this project, I was expecting more albums of this kind of stature and reputation. Despite constant prodding from my mate Dave Lewis to give the Band some attention, they have largely sat on my back-burner. I mean, I've seen the Last Waltz, I know the hits, I even have a favourite deep cut ("Don't Do It", probably the funkiest thing they ever recorded). And I've certainly read a thousand hagiographic magazine articles about The Band. I know the legends, and this is a legendary album from a legendary band. _The_ Band. So what is it like to sit down and properly listen to the album? Well, I can certainly hear how this was massively influential in both song-writing and production approach. And like many super-influential albums, it was followed by a few people who did it better, and a whole lot of crappy imitators playing terrible and increasingly pale carbon copies of this record. The Band really did set the template for Americana. People are still copying this record. There are a few absolute classics on this record (Cripple Creek, Dixie, King Harvest), but some filler, too. The recording quality is a bit more coherent than Big Pink. But here come my blasphemous opinions; some of the singing is weak (especially Richard Manuel), and I have never really rated Robbie Robertson's playing. This album is, possibly, a bit over-rated. But it really is hard to judge an iconic album like this; so much of what has come since has been shaped by it; "authentic" production, band dynamics, the embrace of American roots styles, country-soul... And I do love that it isn't polished to the point that there is no life left in it, unlike so many albums. I can respect it, but I don't know that I really love it. I'm glad I have given it some proper attention. See Dave, I told you I would, eventually.

different kinda rock more country i like it but some songs seem a bit dated and boring. I like the more emotional songs and slower songs, mostly good choruses

My 2nd The Band album - continues to be good ol' classic rock.

Some decent songs but a fair bit of filler for my taste

It's alright

Straight forward easy listening rock.

Pretty good and clearly very influential. I wasn’t a huge fan of the first couple of songs but from Dixie onwards it was relatively strong. There’s just no it factor for the songs really, and their work with Dylan is much more exciting

As far as folk music goes, not a bad album at all. I feel like maybe I would get more out of it if I were American though.

Easy listening

Whole Album seems solid, without much that really stand out or stays with you long after listening. Probably nice to put on some occasions as a fitting background

Alright

it was ok

Eh this album was just merely ok. Nothing really stood out to me while listening to this.

Good but just sounds so old!

Across the Great Divide on toimiva aloitus, ja Dixie on alisoitettu klassikko. Noh, kaiken kaikkiaanhan levyn biisimateriaali on varsinkin B-puolella vähän tasapaksua, rytmi turhan tallusteleva, ja laulajien kaverillinen taitamattomuus alkaa pidemmän päälle ärsyttämään. Toisaalta muistan miten esim.

Some great writing. A few classics. Overall, a fan of this band.

Good for the times. 3/5

Great classic rock album, shared with Dad.

Buenardo, el 1ro de The Band.

Quaint, sonically pleasant. Not something I would go out of my way to listen to, but I don't regret listening. Whispering Pines is FANTASTIC.

What am I missing? Was this proto-roots rock? Am I simply living in a post-"The Band" world much like my eldest son is living in a post-Beatles world and doesn't much understand what all the fuss is about? It's Americana. It's competent. But it's not blowing my mind.

Pretty sure I had this album back in my college days. I do remember most of the tracks, and although I rarely listen to The Band at present, I still appreciate their work. Such a great band.

It was ok, passable even, I didn't hate it and I found myself tapping away for most of it. Would I go back for a second listen? probably not though.

Bonus points for the original name of both the band and the album. Typical sound of that era. It was OK.

It was ok

I'm fairly certain I've never heard a song by The Band before or if I have I didn't know it was them. Good old 70s rock! Lots of different styles intertwined throughout the album.

I love this album. Alluringly unpolished.

I enjoyed it but I didn't super enjoy it.

The Band is like the Dead or Phish, you either really love them, or have no strong feelings. Overall this album was a nice chill, easy to listen to album. No real feelings about it one way or another.

I just don't get the Band. Tried to listen a few times. This album has some songs that i've heard before, know of, and think are ok, but its so ho-hum I can barely finish. Just sounds like hipster music from 1969. Very grateful dead vibe with no jam band/guitar work. Weak 3.

Not for me. A little boring and slow. Soft 3 to 2 territory

Fine but not really to my taste

The Band is undoubtedly a great group, but I just don't click with roots rock.

I don't hear that this is such a classic. It's definitely solid but nothing really grabs the attention.

I took up all of my winnings And I gave my little Bessie half And she tore it up and threw it in my face Just for a laugh Now there's one thing in the whole wide world I sure would like to see That's when that little love of mine Dips her doughnut in my tea Its funny in retrospect that a bunch of canadians wrote a song (not the quoted one) that the american south held so dearly. But in the end the whole thing is actually worth a listen. 3/5

Interchanging singers gives this album an eclectic feel but the organic instruments keep it linked together. King Harvest, Unfaithful servant, Drive old Dixie down and Cripple creek are such well crafted songs

Country correct

Got a little too Cletus the Slack Jawed Yokel by the end.

I like The Band and this was enjoyable to listen to. 3.5.

Yeah this was ok, but it didn't leave me longing for more of it.

In an unusual turn of events, I actually liked this album less on my second listen. So, 3 stars instead of 4 it is.

- Nice old folk songs - Enjoyed it, not sure I'd listen in full again - Criminal that they didn't call this 'The Album' - Fav songs: The Unfaithful Servant, When You Awake, Look Out Cleveland

Ok. Some better than others.

Classic rock_folk

Artistically well done, but not my cup of tea

Solid album by a solid band. I can't say I love it, but I definitely don't hate it either. I mean that in the best possible way. Like, it's good all the way through, but it doesn't "do" much for me either.

This is fine. It seems a lot of these album of ‘60s and ‘70s rock and this band The Band are a great example of it done right. Top to bottom it’s sufficiently made and has nice production quality to it.

I love the Last Waltz but this album is just run of the mill folk rock to me. I appreciate the influence they have to so many bands

Just a late 60s/early 70s sounding band. Nothing stood out on the album. In fact, it all sounded the same. 5/10.

American

6/10. The Band was all together, and it was... alright.

a banda

Un album que je qualifierai de gentillet

Not a huge fan of the twang. I don't even really like "The Weight" which seems to be a beloved song by almost everyone. Again, not a bad album but not one I would seek out again.

An album must click with you emotionally. No matter how good the music is, how non-intrusive the listens, when no song makes you listen closer and no lyrics stand really out, there's also not really a use to listen to it anymore after these first 3 playthroughs. The Band does nothing to me.

I don't really know what to say about this album. It has a cool sound. I enjoyed it. I don't think there's really anything wrong with the album, but I don't like it enough to give it a higher rating. My favourite song is Across The Great Divide.

Rock clássico que segue interessante.

Wanhanliiton juurirokkia. Kelpomaukasta. 3/5

Nautinnollista, mut on kyl aika faija :D Ehken oo vielä ihan valmis. Tyhmästä nimestä myös aina näille miinus.

The song I loved most on this album was actually the Wilco song that auto played after the closing track.

Classic 1960s

Decent album, with piano and synth. Lacks in energy sometimes, some songs could gain from a little punch to them. Decent 3/5

Still, don’t get all the hype,on the band. Emjoyed it. But not revolutionary

It all sounds nice and well done, but in general this style of Americana-ish rock does nothing for me listening back. Live I bet would be a hoot but it doesn't speak to me at all, unfortunately since I can recognize that it's all well done.

I think one reviewer said MEH. Pretty much sums it up. The Band doesn’t offend anyone but it didn’t advance much in the music canon. Cover art 2/5. Did anyone think it was good.

3 stars, good tracks.

Another good background album. Enjoyable but nothing jumped out at me though.

This is a nice album, was nice background music. But nothing really stood out other than Night They Threw Old Dixie Down.

Music seemed pretty generic. Cripple creek was fun, but not a huge fan of the album in general. 2.5 rounded up.

This was a fun listen. Crisply produced prog rock. I could hear a little Pink Floyd in here at times.

A good time

King Harvest

folksy, country sound. Just okay to me, didn't knock my socks off.
