Reviews (page 3 of 7)
Another one that sits right between a 3 and 4 for me. Very atmospheric and punchy. A little more down tempo than I usually go for, but it kept my interest the whole time. Biggest knock would be the homogeneity that I always like to mention. Biggest ups goes to just the general production. Very clean and felt like the focal point with the vocals being complimentary. I was going to round down, but I really enjoyed Coconut and I'm in a good mood.
Those singers were really weird and spooky at first and I was not sure how I would like them through the album. But the backing instrumentals and beats were so so good throughout the whole album that they really grew on me. Listening to a few songs again and the electronics are elite on this album. Such a cool and unique type of music. Started off as a 2 really but worked its way to a high 4
I liked this a lot. It sent me down the path of listening to their other albums.
I love this album, it's one I come back to a lot since first getting into it. Their music (along with The Knife's) is so unique and refreshing. Love the variation of vocal styles and chilly but immersive production. I don't think this is quite as good as Silent Shout, but still a 8/10.
I have heard this before and again despite the odd demeanor of Karin it's right up my alley.
I've never heard of the band or this album. Based on the genre description and average rating, I feared the worst. It turned out differently. I really liked the album. Maybe I'm not thrilled, but I will certainly listen to the album again. 4/6
This is a gem of a find. Recognised the vocals from the Knife. Definitely listen again!
Witchy ambient and electropop. Good winter music.
Better than I expected - very easy listening - nice melody
Mellow electronica - I'm here for it
Well this is it, the final album. After almost 3 years I'm finally done. I have to say, this was a nice one to finish one. I've seen Fever Ray live before, at some festivals, so I knew what I was getting into. Saying that, I am not the largest fan of them. It's got a vibe that you really have to be in the mood for and I've never quite been in that vibe completely. Still a really unique artist that is doing something interesting. Better than the enumerable long album boring British bands that barely have an impact on music.
Actually pretty great. A dark, icy electronic album that's not afraid to venture into odd places. Dare I say, in a particularly Scandinavian way. That said, it's not particularly abrasive. If anything it reminds me of the Donkey Kong Country soundtrack! (Actually, on that note, "Dry and Dusty" reminds me a lot of a track from Super Mario Odyssey lol) There are lots of vocal effects here, lots of pitching down and up. Sometimes they're layered on each other, in a way that reminds me a bit throat singing. And the synths are great, love the bell synths on "Triangle Walks". Anyway, great vibe, something to put on at night and get lost in. Fav tracks: When I Grow Up, Dry and Dusty, Triangle Walks
Well that was different, in a good way. This album stood out a lot to me for the way and style of the instruments. Kinda felt like I was wondering in a somber jungle for a bit there. The singers voice was a bit harsh for my liking. But I enjoyed this a fair bit overall. Unique and consistent
Went nice with a double scotch.
Slow burn this one. But I liked it in the end
Vibey, reminded me a lot of The xx. Nice for beach listening as we did
I really liked this. It has great sound and is great for just chilling.
Very interesting record and sound. It's more soundscapes than its predecessor, the Knife. Very atmospheric record.
Always liked the theme song for the show Vikings which is "If I Had a Heart"
a knife by any other name would smell as sweet
This album reminds me of that Kate Bush song “Under Ice.” One of my favorite songs. I love the feeling of this album, and probably never would have given it a chance based off the album cover! I love the Knife, but had never heard of Fever Ray and I’m so glad this album was on this list!
Delightfully weird, up a similar alley to Bjork but I think I enjoy it more, 4
Het spass gmacht zum lose. Wobi mer di 2. Hälfti besser gfalle het. S eint lied hani sogar scho i mine gspeicherete songs drin gha, was öppis will heisse. S lied "seven" isch mini grösst neuentdeckig uf dem album! Wiiter so fever

Reminds me of The Knife. I used to have a tough time with this genre but I'm loving it...it travels and gives a specific feeling.
Different than most electronic. Definitely better.
I have tried to love this album many times, after the hype that surrounded it in 2009. I readily recognize its originality and groundbreaking soundscapes, but I only *like* it. Quite casually, I gotta say, and not any more than that. Seeing it pop out today on this all made me think about the reasons I can't love this album. So I had to listen to it again (I even got it at home, given the sort of hipster I was in 2009). And after three spins, I think that the real effect of this record on me all boils down to the "a-lot--of-style-but-not-a-lot-of-substance" situation. By this I mean that in spite of the lush, nightly synth textures, not much happens harmonically speaking in this record. Quite often, Karin Dreijer's distinctive pitch-corrected vocals aimlessly wander around the many repetitive icy-cold patterns spiralling on themselves in those cuts. I played some parts of those songs on the piano during one of the times I spun the LP. Gosh, some of those synth parts are all very droney and one-note. And they're not droney in the hypnotic sense of the word, given that the rhythm patterns rarely convey much excitement either. Recently discovered The Knife's *Deep Cuts*, released years before Dreijer's first solo LP, and, on its first side at least, I found the pop potential that *Fever Ray* barely touches upon, so mired it is in its somewhat artsy-fartsy posturing. Maybe *Deep Cuts* should be on that list instead. Still, I'm gonna go as far as giving a rounded-up 4/5 grade to this album. Why, after so many harsh words on my part? First because of the iconic nature of "If I Had A Heart" and "When I Grow Up". Puts my head back 15 years ago. That's a pretty shallow reason to feel so benevolent towards an album I only merely like, but I can't deny the Pavlovian impulse here. Then there's "Seven". It's one of the rare moments when something truly interesting happens on a harmonic level, and it's too bad it doesn't happen that often on the record since it creates such a great song. Finally, there are the two last tracks "Keep The Streets Empty For Me" and "Coconut", where the post-goth moods manage to hit their mark after so many attempts when they don't. Now, my personal opinion is that 2009 was one of the worst years ever for music at large. Throughout my search for musical gems (hidden or not), I've managed to find quite a few of them for most other years in the last six decades or so. But my list for 2009 remains a huge letdown. There are only nine or ten LPs form that year I would like to see on a list such as the one used for this app. Which is *nothing*. Sometimes, I wonder why Fever Ray got such traction for her first solo endeavor. But maybe all it boils down to is the lack of competition in that year. 3.5/5 grade for the purposes of this list of essential albums, rounded up to 4. 8.5/10 grade for more general purposes (5 + 3.5). Number of albums left to review: 24 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 419 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 250 (including this one) Albums from the list I won't include in mine: 311
Strong Björk vibes. I'm into it
A new one for me. I liked it.
I've heard of Fever Ray but had not listened before. In learning that they were part of The Knife, a band whose record Shaking The Habitual was great, I was excited to listen. This is definitely an album that demands multiple listens. I didn't like it all that much with one listen, but I gave it another shot and found it to be really good. A third listen confirmed this. It's a chiller record than Shaking the Habitual, and has some trip-hop vibes. The gender-fluid high and low singing is interesting, and there are many great musical moments. It's a grower.
Great background music for going about your day. I could get used to it.
A good album.
-this is quintessential European gay culture and one of the most unique albums I think I’ve seen on here. can’t really put it into a single genre category but it somehow feels a lot more recent than 2009. The electronic instrumentals scratch my brain really well -Favorites are When I Grow Up, Seven, and Now’s the Only Time I Know
I liked The Knife, so of course I liked this. Great way to start the day!
I dig it!
Saw these at the Sydney Opera House for Vivid 2024. For such a famous venue for performing arts, the acoustics were terrible. We didn't have great seats either. That said, it was still a fun experience. This is an interesting album with some great tracks.
Very unique, haven't heard anything like this before. Good listen!
Vocals are kind of weird, but I didn’t dislike them, and the music is really cool.
Artpop, synthpop. Pretty good, I liked how mellow and introspective it was. Couldn't really pay attention to the lyrics but the bits I heard were cool. Might not be entirely my cup of tea but I understand it. Given the right atmosphere I could really dig it. 4/5
I like their voice. Solid sound.
This is a study in atmosphere and mood and texture, all icy and ethereal and hypnotic and robotic yet also full of (human) childlike wonder. As a Fever Ray fan I’ll admit I tend to gravitate to the poppier moments on their next two albums rather than playing the debut all the way through, but I suspect, not having read the reviews yet, that this album will be too challenging for many and could do with some extra love, so it’s a 3.5 / 4 from me.
I dig this kinda thing, though it falls a little short of Dead Can Dance which is presumably what it's shooting for. Wait..... there's no Dead Can Dance on the list? DIIIIIIIMERY!!! 😡 Anyway, yeah, I like this album - the theme tune to Vikings is awesome, and not many of the other tunes hit that level unfortunately. Fave tracks "If I Had a Heart", "Now's the Only Time I Know", and "Keep the Streets Empty For Me"...
chill vibe, I liked it
I've had some songs from this on my computer from some music blog since 2009. Didn't know the connection to the Knife before now. Just very slightly disappointed that this is semi-bigshot producer stuff coming down the pipe and not the weirdo eastern Canada basement thing I thought it might be based on where I found it. Feels very of its late-00s time. A rare case where that's not a bad thing. A solid 3.5, rounding up for uniqueness on the list. (⌐■_■): (⌐■_■).
Fun electronica, maybe 10 years ago I'd be very into it.
I live in the same city as Fever Ray started. We have a good music base here and quite a few people find fame. It is special. Also, I have never heard of Fever Ray even with the youtube recommendation algorythm and internet radio and ... my just being part of that pseudo-genre that they are in. Needless to say I was very excited to make this discovery and once again thank the 1001 album web-site for this experience. Funny how some of my favorite music will have like 10000 views in 7 years and a local band within my interest has millions of views over dozens of songs and I had never heard (or maybe offhand that one song one time) anything from them... The music world is so weird. I love it.
rigtig stemningsfuldt og lækkert. Vinteralbum
Mega 1.g-core album. Elsker produktionen her, det er sådan en fed organisk lyd, og generelt lækre sange! Det er den Fever Ray plade der lyder mindst som en The Knife plade
Overraskende fed. Jeg har altid haft lidt en svært forhold til Karin's stemme i det her Fever Ray projekt, men jeg har heller aldrig hørt den her plade før. Den her plade er relativt nem at lade sig forføre af og bare glide med på rejsen.
Like 3.7/5
4 stars, had only heard If I had a heart before - thoroughly enjoyed the album
It's a dark, interesting album. I'm glad this kind of stuff is out there, as it's so different. Plenty of atmosphere and mood. The music and vocals are quite effective. 3.5 rounded up.
A new artist to me, and I enjoyed the album.
My kinda weird, but strangely danceable. Kinda scary
I liked this more than I expected
When I saw that this album was electronic music, I was immediately skeptical that I would find it tolerable, much less that I would enjoy it. Color me surprised it's actually a very good album. Dark, eerie and very musically interesting. Definitely worth a listen. Top tracks: Dry and Dusty, Concrete Walls, Coconut
Rated it 4 because I like it better than the metal and punk rock music
I love the voice and the mood. Used to listen to the Knife but never got into Fever Ray and their solo work before.
A beautiful and haunting trip through the devilish mind of Fever Ray. A natural extension of The Knife to excite and delight.
Like a melancholic walk through the woods
Great piece of electronic/experimental pop, but the Björk influence on this is VERY apparent. It’s almost derivative.
An exciting discovery. Very atmospheric, best listened with both headphones in. Exciting from the first song, it really captured our attention immediately.
# Playlist track - When I Grow Up # Notes - I love the dreamy, hazy atmosphere and Karin's vocals and accent are just superb. - I get the comparison with Bjork, but I completely disagree! - 5/7 stars. Pretty cool!
makes me SICK
I never expected this album to be on this list, what a mood, what an atmosphere, love it.
Very atmospheric vibe. Cool mix of coldwave, post punk, and electronica/synth pop. It almost feels like a darker version of Lorde — kind of experimental and kooky, but with very poppy hooks. This is a really good album and something I’ll likely add to my regular rotation. I’m just not sure what makes it worthy of this list — it doesn’t seem particularly revolutionary given the existence of artists like Siouxsie and the Banshees, Kate Bush, Peter Gabriel, Bjork, Depeche Mode, Imogen Heap, Sigur Ros, Gotye, and countless other electronic / experimental acts. Highlights: “When I Grow Up” “Seven” - cool tribal sounding percussion, like a mix of Bjork and Talking Heads with a bit of Cyndi Lauper “I’m Not Done Yet” has a cool Cure vibe with the guitars “Keep the Streets Empty” sort of sounds like a mix of The Cure’s “Lullaby,” Phil Collins’ “In the Air Tonight” and Bjork 4/5
So so good.
When I grow up, sonst recht eintönig... Seven fand ich cool und sonst stranger than kindness
Alter Schwede - cool
Unique sound. Needs a good uninterrupted listen at night.
Another one of those where I suddenly hear a few songs I have definitely heard on the radio before. Quite like this one.
Totally weird but I loved it 😁
Coolt sound, som om Röyksopp skulle göra Depeche Mode covers med Tools psykadeliska känsla. Låtarna är dock lite lika men för mig gör det inget.
Never heard of Fever Ray but I immediately felt like I recognised her voice.... It was really bothering me but I finally realised it reminded me of the Royksopp track, "what else is there". I really liked this back in 2009 or so....Turns out it actually is her! She was then part of the knife, who I have never heard of. I would say this isn't really my thing, but I actually quite enjoyed it. It felt like the music could've been in the show Dark, which has got to be one of my favourite shows ever, I love it. Maybe it was? I just checked and it was! Ok, that explains why I was drawn to this. 3.5, but it's getting 4 because of Dark and the what else is there discoveries making me feel clever! Everyone watch Dark!
01) If I Had a Heart - 8,5 02) When I Grow Up - 7,5 03) Dry and Dusty - 7,0 04) Seven - 8,5 05) Triangle Walks - 8,0 06) Concrete Walls - 8,0 07) Now's the Only Time I Know - 7,5 08) I'm Not Done - 7,5 09) Keep the Streets Empty for Me - 8,5 10) Coconut - 7,5 TOTAL: 7,85 (79/100) I've never heard of the artist. This is weird because it sounds like something I would like back in 2009. And I do. My favorites are "If I Had A Heart", "Seven" and "Keep The Streets Empty For Me".
Feels like an evolution of The Knife and sets the stage for Fever Ray's future craziness. It's weird, it's bold, it's interesting. It's worth a listen
Interesting electro pop. Slow and glacial.
Atmospheric, moody, and delightfully strange. Dark, downtempo synthpop. I dig it.
4.0
Whoa Björk if Björk was actually listenable - what a nice surprise - ethereal but at the same down to earth in a way - strong sounds and songs. Enjoyed it very much.
Very good
- Never heard of this artist, but intrigued; instantly gives the vibe of being post-Björk and a more moody and experimental contemporary of Teegan and Sara. (In fact, their vocals are indistinguishable from the latter at times.) - Great vibe all-around. Easy to turn on and soak in. Not sure if any of the tracks stand out, per se. - Glad to have a break in genre and style on this list (I was getting so much 60s rock). Wish I knew how much music was like this was on the list--if it is standing alone, it deserves 4 stars for just that.
An electro-neopsychedelia experience. Euphoric and ethereal harmonies pushed by solid beats. Love from te first listening.
This was an incredible album and I enjoyed this immensely. It reminded me a bit of Alan Wilder's Recoil but newer. I've listened to it thrice over the last day and I'm currently and for this list putting it at 4 stars. But this album will make its way back into my playlists and I wouldn't be surprised if this became more over time
I really liked this
Wasn't sure I was going to like this album, but I loved it. I was familiar with a couple tunes, but not the band nor this album. 🔥🔥
Pop electrónico. Me ha gustado. Un 4.
Really good, I actually think it's better than Bjork. Probably an unpopular opinion. Funny thing is, I listened to a Bjork album yesterday. Day 24.
loved fever's most recent album. felt good to revisit this one. loved the vibes.
very unique sound, but that made it interesting to listen to and it wasn't bad
I would give it 5 stars but if I have to skip a song bc I can hear your saliva, it’s not a perfect album 😅
Great choice to put If I Had a Heart first. Best song on the album, it really got me in the mood to listen and vibe with the rest of the songs, that didn't stand out quite as much as the first one. Reminded me of If These Trees Could Talk, Sigur Ros, and some of the scandanavian progressive metal songs that I've heard before. Really atmospheric and cool to me.
Lovely and I’m glad it exits. Articulated sounds.
Never listened to this band before, but had seen the Riff Raff inspired album artwork and was curious. Enjoyed this one.
De va nice! Många olika ljud o kiva melodier
Surprising. Actually really enjoyed this album.
Loved it! Wish I heard this sooner! Played front to back no skips.
After 2 listens in a row I can't say with any certainty what this album is about. I can say how it felt though. Ominous. In tune with nature. Consistent in style throughout. It felt like a trippy TV show soundtrack. It specifically reminded me of a show called Three Pines (a murder mystery set in Canada's snowy forests). This album is a trip and I'm here for it.
Pop electrónico. Me ha gustado. Un 4.
Weird chill electronic experimental music. Not bad to have on on background, winter period.
וואלה חמוד
My genuine reaction: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KWQ34SGBtVU This is like if you took Björk and made her grow up in an alternate version of Plato's Cave, where instead of shadows on the wall, it's a playthrough of Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, featuring the evil King K. "Jebediah" Rool. Yup, it slaps.
I enjoyed what I've heard, but she's way better as part of The Knife.
I liked this album a lot, which normally means I’d give it a 5/5, but something about the production and Fever Ray’s singing really frightened me so I’m giving it a 4/5 instead.
Great song in an otherwise mediocre album. Honestly, for me Fever Ray was a one-song band/performance since the beginning. If I had a Heart is an absolute banger, top notch meditative, unsettling song, which was made immortal with Vikings show. First time listening to the album, I feel like the idea was very neat, more approachable Bjork with better beats, but it just didn't feel as exciting as the opening song. I'll give it a good note, but it is hard carried by all-time battle hype hymn.
Interesting, nice buildups, great musicianship and beats
I love the Knife more, but this is good stuff
The early tracks had me thinking I could really get into this, but by the end I think I wanted to like it more than I did. Worth another listen or two at least.
7/10
8/10 very interesting sound
Good stuff.
Never heard of it. This is good stuff. Maybe not groundbreaking but...
Really cool effects in both music and vocals. Slower beats and rhythms that are great for night time listening
Couple of duff tracks but on the whole I loved this & it's got better on a second play (apart from the couple of duffers!).
Excellent album, just the type of overlooked project I was hoping would be on this list.
Really interesting experimental music
Very smooth, very nice. Nothing blew me away, but I could see myself giving another listen.
Somber tones beside nostalgic themes create an interesting atmosphere.
I loved this weird norse viking invader music. I know the female lead vocalist from some other project and I've been trying to put my finger on it since the second I heard her sing on this album. I basically loved this weird awesome and sparse album. Totally enjoyable and weird.
Ghoulishly strange. Sparse, empty and yet intriguing. "Pardon me, do you happen to have any Grey Poupon?"
Yeah they're great
Ok, I didn't knew this was related to The Knife, which I love very much. Nice songs with an electro/marimba/kalimba vibe that is pretty unique in electro-pop music. I enjoyed it a lot.
I think I need to give it a few more listens, since it sounds good when you’re paying close attention, but I was getting sidetracked waaayyyy too quickly. 7/10
Decent 7
Pretty neat avant-garde shit. Definitely used eurorack
Fever Ray of The Knife presents a solo darkwave record, characterized by eery vocals (reminds me of Bjork) and cave-like electronic ambiance with hard beats and polished production that sound similar to the works of later electropop artists, particularly Lorde. It's a cool coherent experience that I'll mostly revisit for the dark ambience, but suffers quite a bit from repetition, with many tracks merging together. Favorites: Seven, Triangle Walks, Now's The Only Time I Know
Un solide 4.5
c'est oui
Score: 80 Album art: 70 This album sounds like an artist in the 80s died and came back as a ghost to record in 2009. Its ethereal and calming, subtle and reserved. If you like the soundtrack to donkey kong country 2 or John carpenter's film scores you will like this. The production is superb and the various vocal effects are interesting. I liked every song but I think concrete walls is easily my favorite. That track is perfect. The album rewards your patience as I feel like it gets better the more it goes on.
Slow, dark, minimalist, electro-synth stuff. Pretty cool.
I had heard of The Knife before but was under the impression they were a sort of Euro-dance group so I was a little apprehensive about this. But I was wrong, and very pleasantly surprised! This album was great. Incredible synth work, and great vocals too. Karin Dreijer's vocal style seems to owe a debt to Bjork but in some ways I like it more here on this album. While this isn't quite a 5 star album for me it is at least good enough that I wanted to listen to it again the same day.
Mesmerising stuff. A bit like the Cocteau Twins updated....
Creeped me out a bit, but the music was straight vibes
I was really digging this sound, but then the tracks started to blur together and it didn't quite keep me so interested. I may try again sometime, because the like that I felt at first was strong.
I kind of liked this stark kind of electronic music. Would be perfect for trekking across some featureless landscape. Some interesting lyrics. Although its bleak nature made it a little tough to fully love or listen to often. But at certain moments it could be perfect.
Dromerige synthpop naar mijn hart. Leuk om te luisteren en opnieuw te luisteren
I've never heard of the Knife or Fever Ray and I absolutely love their non-cheesy, unique, and exciting electro pop music. This album, which is an introduction to their music for me, is very interesting and exciting! I love their type of voice which I would compare to Robyn, Christine and the Queens, Bjork, M.I.A. and many other musical giants. Not sure how I've missed this artist completely but I really like the magical fairytale feel of this album. It feels like an adventure. I'm interested to listen to more of their albums now.
I loved this, definitely going to be re-listening. A great sound, an excellent voice, nom nom nom nom
Bien aimé les voix, le fait que ce soit vraiment différent de ce à quoi je m’attendais, surtout pour la chanteuse. M’a rendue curieuse
A very well done electronic pop album. This was referred to by a critic somewhere as a “singer-songwriter” electronic album and I agree with that. It seems very personal, as though in conversation with the singer but thoughtful enough to be understood by the listener for themselves. I enjoy the use of vocal effects to create the different voices for the songs, as well as the use of synthesis.
I like it, its very unique and very cohesive. I guess my only gripe would be lack of dynamics, it is a pretty steady presentation without ups and downs, all very similar songs. But I like those songs, and I feel more well-rounded for knowing this music. 3.5 rounding up
4.0 - It's like I'm listening to the tribal music of a pygmy mole people from the future.
Not re-listening, but this is one of the best albums of this era with a unique, genre-bending sound which I’ve always loved
Another installment in the electronic music genre that I like. Thanks to this project, I've heard more electronic music than ever before, and I've learned there is a lot of music in this style and genre that I like. That's fantastic!
Novel and interesting lyrics, sounds and voices
Karen Dreijer is a musical genius
The name of the album has conspiracy theory vibes and the cover is like a Unabomber woodcut. My interest is piqued. I have to admit to being pleasantly surprised. I like the music quite a bit. The vocals are like a less annoying Bjork. I didn't listen all that intently to to the lyrics I just enjoyed the overall vibe. 3.5 stars.
cool vibes, strong start but trails off for me
I genuinely enjoyed this one. From the get go it had me intrigued and caught in this subtle trance. It held my interest throughout, holding this haunting aesthetic both in music and vocals, but never felt gimmicky. Added to my music library. A very welcome surprise indeed.
Agh, I've been fretting over whether to give this a 3 or a 4 all day! I listened to this album religiously in college, and I'm drawn to it for the same basic reasons: very striking artistic vision, anachronistic production (the new age synths, sequencing, processed vocals, with a few clean guitars in there), creepy lyrics and vocal delivery. In essence, everything a girl could want. I'm just a little hung up on some of the lyrics. There are some really mysterious, stunning lines, but some just feel either repetitive, or others obfuscatory. But overall, I want to reward albums that feel confident and out of time, and this one really feels that way.
Fever Ray caught me completely by surprise. What a completely unique sound! Now this is an artist that knows the joys and wonders of the Voice Live, am I right? About half the tracks use that deep, haunting vocal and half use an almost Tegan and Sarah-like crone. I love all the mouth sounds in “If I had a Heart.” It makes me as uncomfortable as the subject: greed, lust, power. Concrete Walls is insane. Really insane. I think the subject is psychosis. Or maybe its from the perspective of a cockroach. Either way, the synths are haunting and the percussion is infectious. Keep The Streets Empty for Me is deeply unsettling. There’s something very un-human-like about this song: “I’m laying down, eating snow. My fur is hot, my tongue is cold. On a bed of spider web, I think of how to change myself.” Weird and brilliant artists are coming out of Sweden. This album reminds me of an incredibly disturbing Swedish fantasy film “Border” which is about trolls. I am shook. 4/5.
4 Unique icy sound
I liked it sounded like a dude wanted to make the Hotline Miami soundtrack in the style of Aphex Twin the vocals were consistently annoying but I really liked the production except for the one song that used the marimba I can’t hear the marimba without thinking of that shitty stock music every documentary uses solid 7/10
Vikings
Interesting
At first I thought this was just 'ambient beats to study and chill to'. It is that, but also a lot more. It's atmospheric and detailed and rewards an active listen. Somehow it manages to be both ambient and catchy at the same time. The more I listen the more I like it. Rating: 4/5 Playlist track: When I Grow Up Date listened: 21/09/22
Moody and unique. Sounds a lot like The Knife but also the same person so makes sense.
Favorites were "Triangle Walks" and "Keep the Streets Empty For Me". Solid album overall.
One of those albums that you hear the songs and go "Oh it's THEM!" - lovely spooky soundscapes that are so much more than scene setters for TV dramas. I'll be giving this another listen in late autumn, for sure.
I really like this, musically really interesting, a lot of different world music themes being used. It's like a non-shitty Bjork.
I liked it. I'm glad it had vocals. The female singer added to the creepy/moody feel of the album. I'm not sure if this would be an everyday listen for me but i won't mind revisiting it.
very interesting, voice was a bit annoying but i got used to it. if i could give half stars this would be a 3.5
While not my style there is a lot of interesting stuff on this record.
This feels like cyberpunk desert electro vibes. I'm not even sure what that means, but I'm here for it.
This is a groove that I could stay in for hours. Unlike a lot of other electronic music, one can hop in that groove without even thinking about drugs. The second half tailed off which cost it a 5.
Odd, but great. Nice one Karin.
The beats are very much my thing but the vocal pitch shifting and modulation ruin like 1/2 the songs for me. I'm so into the spare electronic sound though that I can forgive the vocals. I'd definitely prefer to have an album by The Knife on this list in its place.
Strong Björk and Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith vibes. Definitely can appreciate the great instrumentals as well as the general vibe, I'm not a huge fan of the lower-pitched vocals here though, that's just a preference. Overall pretty nice!
This was very cool. I'm not a huge fan of electronic music, so I wasn't expecting to love this, but it won me over. So sparse, dark and moody. It's an odd comparison, but it reminded me a little of Peter Gabriel's Security, which is my favorite album of his. 4 stars.
Sonidos electrónicos. Buena propuesta
Best Song: If I Had a Heart. The only song on the album I knew prior to listening. Dark and brooding, it builds satisfyingly towards this sort of sombre crescendo. The lyrics also feel heavy and mysterious, lending themselves well to the overall tone of the track. Worst Song: Now's The Only Time I Know. Lacks the grit and edge of the rest of the album, sounding more like a generic pop-rock song. Overall: Atmospheric, dark, with interesting lyrics and neatly layered instrumentation. The male and female vocals provide an excellent stylistic counterpoint to one another. For rainy days, dusk and dawn.
I liked this a lot. Interesting delivery good songs and not too long. Very mysterious. 4 🌟
serious and technical, sparse scandi
Sounds good, not the biggest fan of this type of music
Fiilaan kyllä Fever Raytä. Alkulevy on musta parempi kuin loppupuoli, kaks avausraita levyn kohokohdat. 4/5 kiehtovan synkkää
Interessante pop eletrônico da Suécia
Weird and ethereal, so it's a yes for me! Plus the title track to Vikings, which is absolutely ace.
Only knew Fever Ray from Vikings but really enjoyed this album, would definitely listen again.
Fever Ray is a new artist and new music for me. There is something in the vocals that reminded me of Tegan and Sara. Some of the music reminded me a of less serious Dead Can Dance, with Fever Ray having a little fun with the music too. The album works as a whole, but the individual tracks were different enough to keep my attention. "If I Had a Heart" is good example of what you'll get from this album. I also put "Triangle Walks", "Keep the Streets Empty for Me" and "Coconut" in my personal playlist to listen to again later. I enjoyed this album. I could easily come back for a second listen.
Otherworldly. An interesting and relaxed listen. Would defo listen again
Ekki skemmtilegt í hefðbundnum skilningi, en mjög töff og oft glettilega spooky. Minnir mig á sjónvarpsþættina Dark. Mæli með.
Good album, good memories of the times. Is still an interesting and inventive listen
This is very appealing goblin music.
Similar to Soldier Thread. Very easy to listen to while working.
Pretty good album. A bit slower-paced and atmospheric than The Knife, I'd say, but still very enjoyable. Having watched the TV series Vikings, I was of course very familiar with the opening song.
Cool progressive sound
Yesterday's album was one I said you swam in. This one you submerse yourself in. Also, knew it was the Vikings' theme song from the first note.
Woah, Wicked!
amazing album, unique sounding electronic songs that remind me of war chants or similar music
I thought the vocals were a bit grating sometimes, but I liked this album a lot. Favorite track might be Coconut.
7/10. Sounds good, but in a really boring way. Without the vocals this would make a fantastic video game soundtrack, but it's too slow for me to want to just listen to it.
I liked this!
A Mix of Sinead O'Connor's pathos nd a bit of icy Nico's voice. The music is easy to listen to, but the lyrics seem a bit banal. (7/10) Favourite Tracks: If I Had a Heart
Knowing nothing about this artist of album I was pleasantly surprised! Reminded me a bit of Bon Iver. Relaxing and good to work to.
Good vibes.
Rating: 7/10 Beat songs: triangle walks, now’s the only time i know, keep the streets empty for me
Enjoyed this. Surprised by the first track being the theme tune to vikings.
Overall I liked it. It's a different sound for sure. was kind of surprised it didn't start to get old and sound repetitive. Really enjoyed the enigmatic jam session on "I'm not done". 4.0
Really cool
Liked this and will listen to it again
So mint
Right up my street
Je m’attendais à rien et wow. Un album très différent des autres cette semaine. J’ai toute suite embarqué avec la première chanson. Genre d’album à écouter en faisant son jogging.
dark house pop. A bit slow to start but finds a groove. downtempo sensual moody
Feels timeless and locked in time at the same time, definitely pushes the envelope and is confrontational and comfortable at the same time
A pretty unique album, nothing really sounds like it. Also the loudest thing I have ever heard live
Big discovery!
wow. j'aime gros beaucoup en plus la trame sonore de viking est leur création belle découverte pour moi
This kind of stuff is extremely my shit. If late Tegan and Sara were Swedish and had a drum machine. I’m down to clown.
Really cool
Picked this up a while back under influence of the Vikings TV series opening sequence. On prior listens I felt like the latter half maybe dragged or got monotonous but I'm feeling on this listen maybe it merited closer attention.
Very good album. Great selection of songs, not something I'd listen to lots by myself but still great
I really like the knife, surprised I didn't know his single act before that. Definitely good for me
Really good!
Strange and beautiful!
11/07/2026 I was surprised by this album... I didn't hate it, but I didn't like it either! Spotify listeners: 717.2k
I’m always leery when I pull an album that has electronic sound. This one was a bit different. Wasn’t my favorite but it was weird enough to hold my attention.
Chille vibe, maar aan de saaie kant
rich in cold Nordic songs. as atmospheric electronic as it is synthpop. maybe more. delicate but not weak. i probably could've enjoyed this more in a different headspace, but it did its job well enough. deserves to be one of the 1001? it's not an offensive pick but i would swap it for Silent Shout
This is okay. I frequently thought I was listening to Björk, who I have mixed feelings on, so it's no surprise I have mixed feelings on this.
nice and moody, but a little slow paced for me. really relaxing
If I Had a Heart - 3/5 When I Grow Up - 3/5 Dry and Dusty - 3/5 Seven - 3/5 Triangle Walks - 3.5/5 Concrete Walls - 3.5/5 Now's the Only Time I Know - 3/5 I'm Not Done - 3.5/5 Keep the Streets Empty for Me - 3/5 Coconut - 3/5 A fairly dark and cold album that sounds like Bjork entered the scene about 15 years late. The sound though also sounds like it came straight for the SNES, which helps with the overall theme at points but for me it just makes everything sound the same. Everything sounding the same is the real detriment for me, though with some more variation this could be better. Overall: 3/5 Favorites: Triangle Walks, Concrete Walls, I'm Not Done
Wished I liked it more and I think I did when it came out
Immediately recognized the voice from Royksopp's "What else is there". It is quite unique. Sounds almost breaking.
I was ready to give this two stars, but the more I listened, the more it drew me in. Don't know if I'd ever just listen to this again of my own volition, but glad I gave it my attention.
не люблю такое :(
A more mellow electronic music ride than others on the list in the genre. Seven and Now's the only time I know are the standouts for me in rotation. The rest of the album was just nice.
I LOVE heartbeats by The Knife so this was promising and I liked it ok! First track had so many mouth sounds in it that it was almost unlistenable to me though which is a shame
It wasn't as bad as people made it out to be
Interesting dark ambience
It’s another one that’s good, but a whole album is a bit much, and some tracks are a bit…dreary?
Surprised by this one. I might give some more Fever Ray a go. Was quite enjoyable.
A foundational album in the 2010s indie synth revival - cool and dark, moody textured computer music with loads of tension that threatens to release itself into a euphoric dance breaks, but is too slow to really trigger the catharsis. Perfect soundtrack for a post-financial crisis historical era where the internet is really settling in as the monoculture.
Eh. Didn't hate this, but it also didn’t particularly grab me. I feel like I’ve heard the first song before. The opening notes definitely tickled my brain. Apparently it’s in an episode of Breaking Bad, so that’s the likely source. Oh, and I don’t have misophonia, but even I noticed the mouth noises. Either a terrible recording decision or a terrible studio blunder. 5/10 Decent
Don't know if I paid any attention to this album when listening. It is very spooky? But listening to it in a corporate setting is just the wrong setting I guess. Wasn't bad at all, but not something I'd ever voluntarily listen to. I think I see the vision... 3.5/5
I really enjoyed the instrumentals on this album. The vocals didn’t always add and sometimes took away from the vibe. I found the male singer’s deep voice was more aligned with the mood on his tracks. I wanted to like it, because it started strong, but definitely was ready for it to be over before the end.
Maybe I should get into this sort of thing (wrote this after initially writing "this is not for me"). It's creepy and vibey, not anything that jumps out at you or that I'd want to play while driving a car for fear that I'd either be bored or, if not, compelled to drive into a tree. But if I'm just working and thinking about laying waste to my enemies? Maybe. If I'm high and feeling vengeful? Possibly. So, sure, why not.
I’m close to a four…
Very fun groovy synthpop Triangle Walks was pretty good So is Keep The Streets Empty For Me
I've heard of this artist, don't know if I remember their music. Cool stuff. Not for me though, a bit slow with these first few tracks.
I was originally a bit turned off by the genre listing of 'electronic pop' but, much like other albums from this list, upon given a chance, it is actually quite good.
Have always been a casual fan of The Knife, but a whole album of this was too much for me. A song here or there would do me fine.
This was interesting. Something to listen to in the dark or with headphones. Not super entertaining but somewhat mesmerizing.
This mostly blended into the background and wasn’t bad, I guess it found me at the right time.
very atmospheric and peculiar synthpop music. it kinda leans towards ambient territory, but it never fully goes that way. vocals are a huge focus here; band member likes to layer their voice again and again in all sorts of weird and wacky ways, digitally altering recordings to make a creepy sounding choir from a single vocalist. really it's more of the odd alt-post-modernist electronic music today, it seems. with the weird vocal stuff and ambient, cold... minimalist production, it's a mixed bag for someone like me. i like some of the soundscapes on certain tracks and some of the eurocentric vocal running techniques, but a lot of it is a wide spectrum of meh. maybe if i'm in a better mood i can fuck with the sound more, but right now... it only gave me so much. it's a solid 3 star.
100% escandinavo das ideia não é ruim não
um synthpop bem sutil e soturno, foi melhor do que achei que seria, viu bacaninha demais
I liked this. I was pretty sure I wouldn't, but it surprised me. 5/20/26
3.5
Poor man’s Björk is still pretty cool. 3.5?
not my type, vocal too spikey
Big fan of the show Vikings
ну вайбово мені в принципі зашло
This album was strange for me. When it first started out, I thought I was going to hate it. As I went through the songs though, I found that I was starting to dig what they had to offer. There was a worldbeat aspect to it that just reminded me of what Enigma put out in the 90s. This band is definitely harder and there is more of an alternative bent to it, less of a pop one. But there are enough similarities here. Also, as I was listening, it felt like it was a father daughter duo as the lead singers, though I guess it is just one person doing this? If so, that's pretty incredible. The female vocal styling is much better though. My favorite tracks from this were definitely Triangle Walks and Now's the Only Time I Know. Really interesting sound, definitely worth the listen. Not sure I would come back to it a ton though.
I wasn't too excited about this, the vocals and stuff weren't my sorta thing. But definitely some interesting sounds. The second half of the album really brought me around to it
When Karin Dreijer, the driving force behind Fever Ray, released her debut album, I missed it. And when she released her second album eight years later and toured with it, her shocking image so repulsed me that I didn't really want to listen to the music anymore. Time to make amends. The very first song here will be familiar to many from the opening theme of the TV series "Vikings." Overall, the choice is logical — despite the album being primarily electronic, with elements of trip-hop, everything here sounds very ethnic, cold, and minimalistic; a northern feel, in fact. The deep, trance-inducing vocals, so heavily processed with various effects that it's sometimes hard to tell whether the singer is a woman, a man, a child, or some mythical creature, also add a touch of fairytale. Björk used to do something like this, and Aurora would later occasionally do something similar. Not a bad album, need to listen to it again on a foggy, chill morning.
A generally solid electronic album. No major stand-out tracks, but also no outright bad tracks, just generally average. 2.5 -> 3/5
Ok
Bit like a mix between Burial and Kate Bush (although not quite as good as either).
This one is a true 3 for me. It's a bit weird and outside my normal preferences, but there's a something factor I just can't put my finger on. I might have to revisit this one when I'm in a different mood.
Tämä oli jännää, jännää kamaa. Siellä oli omituisuuksia. Pitää tutustua vähän tarkemminkin.
Would do bits at Arctangent festival, put her on Bixler whilst Pig Destroyer tear the Yohkai a new one
Very Scandinavian sounding. Hear some Björk influence for sure. Especially vocals in When I Grow Up. Overall it held my attention and I generally liked most of it. Some of it was (especially male vocals) blah blah blah whine and mope. But Not bad for electronica overall. Pretty good.
Eerie, icy, and rich. I don’t know if I liked it but I can certainly appreciate it.
Feels like i shouldn't be listening to this in April. This is a winter album. I like the Knife, but i've never really listened to Fever Ray. This is good. Not AS good as The Knife, but some of those textures feel like they're going to strangle you. Fun.
Pleasantly surprised to hear it was vocalist from The Knife. 2nd song was where i worked it out. I like the World Music/Electronic/Chill/Sinister vibes. Maybe got a little bored of the voice changer thing by the end 3/3.5
Ooh, this is intriguing. Gloriously weird and aloof. I like it. And I really think it might develop into a 4.
Fine. I might have been more into this 25 years ago.
This was kind of nice! Not sure if I’ll come back to it, but a pleasant diversion.
I liked it and it had some really nice 4 or 5 star moments, but not enough to raise the entire album above a 3.
Great backing sounds.
I enjoyed most of this, I think I was expecting more The Knife type dance songs, but it's definitely different and more sparse and experimental. It's got dark, cold, atmospheric vibes.
A very strange little Electropop album. It's pretty good, but it certainly doesn't reach the heights of Fever Ray's duo with her brother, The Knife. There are similarities, though, especially to their 2006 album Silent Shout, which I'm surprised is not on this list. Either way, catchy and interesting, and the only thing that really throws me off is the vocal effects. Key tracks: Seven Now's the Only Time I Know
Meget fedt, men lidt for elektronisk til mig.
Another one of those, why is this album on the list. Vocals were all over the place. It was not horrible but not going to listen to again either.
It had its moments
pretty weird, but not really in a way that I loved. It was find and kinda cool in parts, really dug the soundscape, but the lyrics were just too poetic/cryptic or just felt random for me to really get into this. Didn't hate it so there's that. Didn't love all the vocal gymnastics the singer did.
while this isn't my style, it at least was an interesting listen. kind of Bjork vibe. 3.5 stars
Tepid vocal electronica. Thought the cover looked cool. That didn't really last. Thought it was going to have a bit of cool atmospheric edge to it in track 1 but that soon gave way as well. I'm left a bit confused as to why this is here. It's not terrible but it's decidedly mediocre and seems to have had zero impact on music. Odd selection.
En realidad es 3.5 porque es muy bueno, pero siento que es demasiado dark para mí.
Fever Ray: Fever Ray: Swedish ambient electronica, subtle and unobtrusive, quite pleasant. Could appeal to Eno fans.
I liked the vibes
Not the worst thing on here. I can see how some would rate this highly. 2.5-2.75 for me.
Random thoughts: * Interesting listen and vibes. Definitely not boring. * This album has some Bjork vibes. * I was surprised I never heard of this album or group before. Seems like this would be up my alley since I have heard of her previous group, The Knife. Kind of seem like The Knife should be on this list instead. * It shows how hard it is to pick newer and alternative albums for a must listen list. I can't wait for us to come up with 100 albums that should be on this list instead. Maybe that is how it goes when evaluating art. * I might stumble upon this again and listen but this will likely never become a staple album for me.
I like her voice. It is probably too ambient-y for my tastes. Maybe have this on while you get high with your crush?
An interesting album that feels like a fever dream of the late 00’s.
5.5/10
It's ok
hey we finally got a swedish DJ album here and surprise surprise its pretty underwhelming. Its really just generic electronica that doesnt set itself apart, and its weirdly sleep inducing.
Fine? Just a standard pop album with weird vocal affectations.
I like this vibe. It's kind of expansive, sparse, and contemplative. Definitely good background chill music with enough to stay engaging when you focus on it. I don't know how much I'll come back to it, but I enjoyed this listen.
The 00s are seemingly underrepresented on this list, which is a shame for me, because in the 00s I was a cool teen who knew about popular and/or "niche but good" music. Or at least I thought I was. So far I have heard of 0 entries on this list from that era. So I think they weren't super well known or culturally defining (which seems to be the case for other eras) and to my ear they are also not "unusual but suitably mind blowing as to deserve a spot on the list", which I would love. So what gives??
It’s very hard to put into words why this album is good. Vocally it is quite a unique experience, Fever Ray often jumping between various vocal styles and vocal processing. (I remember on my first listen thinking I should’ve been playing it at 45 cos the first track is pitched so low). Lyrically, I have a lot more work to do; it all comes across as intriguingly personal and I’m wondering if there might be more inclusive messaging. Musically again it is difficult to pin down. It’s not revolutionary, but it’s not simply derivative either. A positive for me was that every time I was inclined to compare the sounds to other artists, they were artists I have the greatest respect for. As the tracks slithered by I heard the creeping murkiness of Mezzanine (Massive Attack), the understated sophistipop of Talk Talk, some immaculate reverb that put me in mind of Kraftwerk. There was one song that wouldn’t have sounded out of place on Aphex Twin’s I Care Because You Do and there seemed to even be some darkwave era Cure. The thing is though, while it would be unfair to say the music was close to incidental, the drifting comparative thoughts dissipated as soon as the vocals start in any given track which I think reveals a lot about the focus. So currently I enjoy the album yet feel that I’m having two experiences at once rather than a fully gelled message. My expectation is that Fever Ray is an album that will reward every listen and will reveal itself more clearly as the contemplative artefact it truly is. It’s a 3.5 but for now I’ll round down and in time I expect to round up.
It’s ok. For every great moment there’s a moment that drags.
2.8 It was listenable but nothing really grabbed my attention. Pretty weird facade they put on
Trippy electrco pop.
Very interesting! I wasn't sure what I was going to think about this one but it exceeded expectations.
spooky vibe d'automne. J'ai l'impresson que je vais forger une épée à la main
