I’m not totally against this album. I’m getting quite the appreciation for country. There were a few tracks that almost did it for me, but not all the way. Not bad, just no particular bangers. Great voice, very chill album. No playlist adds, 2.

Folk-singer/songwriter, god vokal, lidt kedeligt

There is not much to elaborate in regards to this album. "Red Dirt Girl" is nineteenth(?!) Record in Emmylou Harris' career. It's a folk/country music, which unfortunately combines two genres I'm not particularly fond of. It feels like a deeply American album, so my connection to it isn't really there. The self-titled track is supposedly the most popular song by Harris, but I really couldn't understand why. It's a rather typical song slightly in style of Dolly Parton, who I think is much superior singer in Country style. I like the song "The Pearl", it had some rock elements into it, so it stand out amongst the others, but that's all that I could enjoy. Discover, Listen, Forget.

Emmylou Harris is a 70s country artist who contributed with Dolly in 1987 in her famous Trio album and provided background vocals in lesser-known records by Gram Parsons, Bob Dylan, and Guy Clark among many others. In this late-career record, she incorporates modern production skills to fuse a somewhat indie instrumental style with her traditional country folk approach. In fact, the last song reminds me of Uncle Tupelo, a similarly sounding alternative country contemporary. (I know it's supposed to reference Elvis.) The instrumentation can be a bit spacious and ethereal at times, but feels more like minor ornamentation and only makes the songs more bearable. But at the end of the day, it's still just a woman singing about sorrow and family troubles with a guitar, nothing to write home about. I think a lot of is decent, but of course, it drags on, despite most of it is completely forgettable. Favorites: I Don't Wanna Talk About It Now, Bang the Drum Slowly, J'ai fait tout, Hour of Gold

I can imagine this as being pretty popular in 2000. In 2023, not so much.

For being a legendary country singer this album is really bland. It's overproduced and nothing really sticks out. It's almost like the album was run through a pop filter and everything got smoothed out.

Never heard this record and surprised it’s on this list considering the rest of her career/discography. I’ve never been a huge fan of her voice, but I like some things she’s done, like grievous angel and some of the other stuff with gram parsons. Some of her live stuff is kind of cool. Bruce Springsteen and his wife sing backup on track 4 of this record. 2.7? I wouldn’t listen again

This seems like it's going to be country. Huh, yup, seems like it, but like... weird country maybe? Idk, I'll give a few track a try, but this might be a skip. Good chance for me to explain my rating system and put it in writing for myself. One star = bad bad, will not listen to again. Two = I see the merit, but maybe not my thing or not my genre. Three = a solid album, I could see myself listening to it again. Four = I'm almost certainly saving this album, and I'll probably listen to it again more than once. Five = a great album, it will be saved, added to my heavy rotation, and likely bought on vinyl. Okay, so is this country or not? Maybe this is actually like, what's it called, adult alternative? Like Melissa Ethridge or something. I'm more neutral to it so far, like it isn't bad three minutes in. Way better than the Neu album or that dog shit Velvet Underground album. She definitely has a nice voice, and the lyrics seem solid (I'm not following them real closely). The title track is, so far, my least favorite. It's like straightforward cliché country. Still not a bad album 6 songs in, but I am getting kind of bored of it. Oh motherfucker, Dave Matthews is on this album? Hahaha weird. Had to look it up, thought it might have been the Mumford and Sons guy.

After 429 albums my main observation of this list is that there is too much Elvis Costello, too much Time Waits, and far, far too much country music. I quite liked this initially, but as it wore on I found myself increasingly bored and having nothing really to say about it. Basically fine but not for me. I ovaj album je lijep, pročitao sam da je ovo njen 19. studijski album, ali ovo je baš njen gdje je napisala pjesme koje izvodi jer većinom radi obrade u stilu countrya. Sve u svemu, malo vuče na Sandu kad je ozbiljna - na ovom coveru, a albumu mislim da se neću vraćat.

Nice voice, but no way this is something you need to hear before you die. The NINETEENTH album by her? Was this seriously such a huge step up from the first eighteen? Always eyebrow-raising when you check the Legacy section on Wikipedia and the only sentence is "The album was included in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die." Also not a big fan of country or folk.

Very standard country album to me. Not bad but don’t see what makes this so special or deserving to be on the list. But country is not my genre so maybe I’m not looking for the right things

One of those artists that I really should know more about, but sadly there are some major gaps in my listening history. There's only so much listening time available each day. This is defo Bob Harris alt-country R2 territory. Not the type of album I'd fire up for a Friday night. It had depth, both in terms of tunes and texture. That sounds pretentious bollocks. Sometimes it's the only way to describe AOR and the lack of irony or even humour within.

Nothing special at all. Emmylous voice is great and the music is quite soothing, but I'm honestly a little suprised theres so much country music in this list and I found difficulty distinguishing between much of it. This was mostly just one in the masses.

Oh god. I probably should be nice. I don't like this record. It's not for me. A lot of the records on this list aren't "for me." I get that. But, the thing is, this record doesn't compel me to even try. I'm sure there are a handful of Emmylou Harris records that I would like. But, I'm sure they don't involve this new-agey production. 2/5 because you don't slight a legend with a 1/5, but that's probably the only reason why.

Though I'm not really a big fan of the gospel/folk/country & western genre - I do like Emmylou Harris. She's got a unique "storyteller" voice that is perfectly suited to the genre. But, this seems misplaced and overproduced in the year 2000. It's like they were trying to make her relevant to a wider audience (queue Dave Matthews as a guest star on one track), but it didn't work. Sorry.

She can clearly afford some good session musos, the guitar work was great but - it's simple country music with cliched lyrics and vocal delivery.

Fine album, but not my favorite. A lot of snooze songs but “I don’t wanna talk about it now” is the type of the song that you listen to sitting around a campfire with like 5-8 people just vibing and enjoying life.

I'm going to be honest: I didn't listen to the whole thing.. I had enough. I didn't like it.. it was boring and bland.

I kind of liked the title track but the rest left me cold. The mild electronic backing added next to nothing. Probably exciting if you were already a fan, but certainly not winning any.

I find it hard to believe that anyone named Emmylou isn't going to do country. Yeah it's country. Like a theatre kid doing country. Not sure how I feel about it. Ok according to wiki she was already in her 50s when this came out. Definitely didn't get that vibe. 2/5 all the same, just don't care about it.

It's not quite as country twangy as where we started 26 years ago, but the music is still pretty boring. Pretty voice, but a slow pace and nothing particularly catchy to hang onto. Snooze-fest.

Emmylou Harris brauchte also knapp 53 Jahre, um ein Album fertigzustellen, auf dem hauptsächlich Eigenkompositionen vertreten sind, entnehme ich dem Wikipedia-Artikel zu dieser Platte. Man hätte ihr gewünscht, dass dabei mehr herauskommt als diese Aneinanderreihung von ausgewalzten, klischierten Belanglosigkeiten. Stellenweise einfach unerträglich, gerade so 2 Sterne.

IDK, Emmylou is great...but this is late nineties emo-country

I really wanted to get into Red Dirt Girl, but unfortunately it just didn’t do much for me. It’s a very slow, quiet, and understated album, and after a while I found myself losing interest. The songs all seem to live in a similar mellow, melancholic space, so the album started to feel a bit flat and repetitive. There’s no denying that Emmylou Harris is a great singer, and there are some nice melodies and thoughtful lyrics here. I can also appreciate that the album is clearly very personal and emotional. But for me, the emotional impact just wasn’t there. I never really felt pulled into the stories or connected strongly with the songs. The biggest problem was probably the pacing. Everything moves along at such a measured pace that I kept waiting for something to change—a little more energy, a different arrangement, or a song that would really grab me. Those moments never really came. Instead, the album maintained pretty much the same mood from beginning to end. I don't think it’s a bad album at all. It’s well made, sincere, and Harris sounds great. I can definitely understand why people who enjoy slow, intimate country and folk music would love it. It just wasn’t particularly engaging for me. Overall, Red Dirt Girl felt more like an album I appreciated in theory than one I actually enjoyed listening to. There are some good songs and performances, but the overall experience was just too slow and subdued for my taste. By the end, I was mostly ready to move on to something else.

I was excited to get an album from someone I've never heard of and know nothing about. That excitement died pretty quickly when I realised that The Pearl sounds like someone using hold music through a phone as a backing track. I understand that Emmylou Harris has released many albums and this might not be a fair representation of her work as a whole so I will try to keep my bias in check when she next comes up.

Nice enough voice, but enough of this country-ish shit. Not worthy of this list.

It's a typical Country music album. I've now had a 21st Century album on nine out of the last ten days in this generator. This is the fourth consecutive day I've generated an album between 2000-2004. Last year on this day, I generated an album from a Country singer who debuted in the 1960s. Favorite Track: "Bang The Drum Slowly".

Variety: 1 Adequacy: 2 Listenability: 1 Uniqueness: 1 Emotionality: 2 = 1.4 rounded down to a 1 "And when finally the bottom fell out, I became withdrawn / The only thing I knew how to do / Was to keep on keepin' on" Harris is one of those people who I've heard various tracks from over the years, and my reaction has always been of the lukewarm variety. I'm not the biggest folky singer songwriter enthusiast, and the country leanings never inspired too much further investigation. None of those qualifiers necessarily turn me away from an artist on their own, but that combination is a doozy. I find I bump up against stuff by Kris Kristofferson, Townes Van Zandt equally for example. And while I can see the craft and even enjoy some James Taylor stuff, it is VERY far outside my wheelhouse. There's got to a heavy dose of catchy melodies for it to gel for me. Someone like Neko Case is a modern example of an artist I adore, who on paper does not sound a zillion miles away from Harris. But here we are. This one also comes later in her career, so wondering if I'm going to get a "past their prime" Dylan or Springsteen vibes off of this. THE TRACKS "The Pearl" - This was not what I was expecting. Feels like some middle-eastern touches thrown in to the rhythms, and maybe some hevy electronic processing. Capable and has a not-uncatchy vocal melody, but getting very strong Phil Collins Tarzan soundtrack vibes on this. Kind of just on the edge of the kind of adult contemporary sound that with a good shove could push it into the Christian pop ravine to mingle with all the discarded Amy Grant albums. "Michelangelo" - This is much more of what I was thinking the whole album might sound like. Kind of haunting folk balladry. A little too overproduced for this type of thing. I would have maybe liked to have heard the creaking guitar strings and maybe some thumping on the body of the guitar for a beat. It still would not get this into the highlights, but imagine this as a very simple mid 70s sort of thing. "I Don't Wanna Talk About It Now" - Oof... that keyboard preset rhythm was a rough start, but otherwise this is a bit more of a success. Still not my thing, but I can at least see the appeal. This is reminding me of stuff by Meredith Brooks, or Cheryl Crow. Strong hooks, and composition, but drowning in overproduction. "Tragedy" - This sounds like an AI trying to emulate an Amy Mann song. The elements are there, but it just sounds generic. "Red Dirt Girl" - The first track on the album I found myself warming to. This leans much more traditional country with some added effects laden guitars. This is a lot stronger than any of the previous tracks for sure. But... But I would still have rather heard this as a stripped down solo guitar track with some warm 70s production. "My Baby Needs a Shepherd" - This one has instrumentation and a sound that is not too distant from "Hold On" by Tom Waits. If we just look at the instrumentation, what separates these two the most is the production. one is big, clean, and generic. the other intimate, warm, and rough around the edges. Both are most assuredly well thought and designed with intent. But one fails for me completely. "Bang the Drum Slowly" - This one works much better. Scaled back and just Harris with some spare instrumentation. Then the HEAVILY processed beat drops in and messes up what could have been a nice emotional number. Imagine this as a gospel number with JUST the vocals. That would have been great. The quality of the material and vocals rescue this from the fussy overbaked tone. "J'Ai Fait Tout" - Ugh... more bleeps and bloops. "Grandma, wear this Kangol hat - it'll look great on you!". This one was the most cringeworthy track. A rare DNF from me. "One Big Love" - Yikes. The opening of this sounded like when you hear one of those soundalike rock songs in a tv show or movie that you're watching where they couldn't clear the rights to re-use the original. Same thing with some classic soundalike wrestling intro music ( looking at you specifically DDP!). In song in question would be "You DOn't Know How It Feels" by Tom Petty , released 1994. Go ahead, look it up and compare. I'll wait... See! Otherwise , this felt much more like an unoffenisive bit of pop country. "Hour of Gold" - Did Sting secretly produce this one? This has a very nonspecific new agey vibe I could imagine on one of his later offerings. Harris deivers a fine vocal performance, but that's the only nice thing I can say about it. "My Antonia" - I might sound like a broken record at this point, but I once again this feels like Christian "praise" music. More so than anything else even on here. Just close your eyes and insert some random Jesus's in there and you'll hear it. "Boy from Tupelo" - I guess this was bout Elvis? I dunno, I was pretty checked out by this point. This was so generic. HIGHLIGHTS - "Red Dirt Girl" MIDLIGHTS - "I Don't Wanna Talk About It Now" - "Bang the Drum Slowly" LOWLIGHTS - "The Pearl" - "Michelangelo" - "Tragedy" - "My Baby Needs a Shepherd" - "J'Ai Fait Tout" - "One Big Love" - "Hour of Gold" - "My Antonia" FINAL THOUGHTS I can't say Harris failed to make the album she wanted to, as it's a professional outing by a veteran performer, and has all the hallmarks of a well-crafted attempt to reinvigorate a career. And by all accounts it was successful. There are a TON of artists who count Harris as a prime influence, and this even got some mainstream traction. It just feels like old person cosplay at times. Yes, I know she was only 53 when this came out. And this is maybe more of a successful attempt than some latter day Dylan, but that doesn't mean it's great. It might be good though. It's just aimed entirely over my head. Without sounding too harsh and cliched, this fits perfectly in my mind into the type of music you might hear in a Starbucks. Unoffensive, vanilla, and with the trappings of the day ( drum loops, antiseptic production, but with plenty of folky guitars and piano touches to give the illusion that this is a new artist. Not accusing Harris of trying pull one over, but it just feels like a producer got a hold of some Harris material and went to town with it, and you lose the artist in the atmosphere. Wonder how much my opinion would change if I heard a "naked" version of this album, similar to the Let It Be mix. Couldn't stand it.

Gentle western music. Guitar and a solo female voice. not my thing

Back-to-back country albums and this was was just dreary and dull. The tempo is slow throughout the album, and in some of the earlier tracks I find Harris' voice to be grating. The best of the bunch for me was the track One Big Love which seemed to stand out with a strong guitar riffs, but all-in-all, awful.

Emmylou has a really great voice. It’s too bad that most of the songs on this are so bland and dull that I can’t recall any of them. Except One Big Love, because the lyrics sound like someone who got their first rhyming dictionary and just had to give it a whirl. Congrats to Emmylou for putting out at least 19 albums, but this seat should be reserved for an album that’s the complete package, and this album is far from that.

Emmylou has a great voice but the weird techno-y country vibe isn’t working for me. Weird production choices. I’ll pass.

Overall I felt like the production was trying to do too much. Most songs were well-written folk/country songs, perhaps a little too full of themselves, and Harris is a good singer, but the songs just weren't distinct enough to get much from them. The production just felt kind of try-hard, as if to attempt a spin to make it novel or contemporary, but it just distracted and didn't fit. I found myself skipping around through tracks. I could see why people like this, but it felt like some safe pop country music trying to disguise itself.

This was the second Emmylou Harris album in this project. I had successfully forgotten that I had heard one of hers before. This whiny country lament gets on my nerves. Or is it just Emmylou's voice? Anyway, I haven't listened to it all the way through and I won't. 1/5

I... Just didn't really care for this one.

When I saw this was a country album I was prepared to give this a 1. After the first song and reading the big blob of context in the second or third review I was a bit invested and thought this might have been a turning point for my relationship with country. However after a few songs I was just bored to death, and there's something about country singing that irks me the wrong way. I can't put my finger on it but all country singers do it.

Replay value on this is, use it to go to sleep. Not my flavor but I can understand the appeal.

While I recognise Harris' great musical talents, her specific brand of balladsy country pop as exhibited on this album just isn't for me, therefore one star. That doesn't mean it's bad, it just means that it's not my thing. I have to acknowledge however the "homey" feel of her music that came up when I listened to it. I dunno what exactly that is, but listening to her somehow managed to conjure up a tiny bit of the feeling of being twelve again and vaguely hearing stuff similar to this from the radio that's playing in the other room, while I presumably read comics or something? Weird stuff.

Er zijn maar weinig artiesten, die op latere leeftijd nog een meesterwerk konden maken. De enige die me nu te binnen schiet, is Johnny Cash. Maar wat hij juist deed, nadat hij eerst jarenlang eigen composities had vertolkt, was om op latere leeftijd covers te maken van bekende nummers van andere artiesten. Emmylou gaat juist op latere leeftijd eigen nummers zingen, na een hele carriere succesvol gecoverd te hebben (althans, dat lees ik op de wiki). Ze zingt wel ok, al kan ze niet lang genoeg een toon vasthouden en dan gaat ze heel irritant trillen met haar stem. Er zit amper drums in, het blijft vaak bij wat eentonige percussie en het klinkt drumcomputerig. Met andere woorden: ik geloof het allemaal niet. Ik kan met dit soort muziek echt helemaal niks. Wat is dit ondraaglijk saai. Ik wil het bij het tweede nummer al uitzetten en met heel veel moeite sleep ik me naar het einde. De titeltrack is nog enigszins te beluisteren. Maar de rest is net als met die draak van een Eva Cassidy: zo ontiegelijk traag. Dat was een dingetje in die tijd blijkbaar. Afschuwelijk dit.

Don't get how an album with only mild acclaim makes this list. It has a little more musical depth than a lot of country music, but is otherwise typical country fayre.

This is the 166th album I’m rating. After I listened to Down by the Seaside I started to get interested in country rock so I listened to one Emmylou Harris song and it was awful. Adding to my Playlist - Nothing. Not Adding to my Playlist - The Pearl, Michelangelo, I Don't Wanna Talk About It Now, Tragedy, Red Dirt Girl, My Baby Needs a Shepherd, Bang the Drums Slowly, J'ai Fait Tout, One Big Love, Hour of Gold, My Antonia, and Boy from Tueplo. Red Dirt Girl - Not as awful as the rest of the album but still not good. All in all I liked 0/12 songs. Emmylou Harris is as bad as I thought she was. Not nearly as good as Lucinda Williams.

Good Lord this is bad. Such a beautiful voice. Way back when she was singing her grief at losing Graham she had some interesting ideas. But her musical instincts are utterly banal.

Good gawd this was a really tough to make it through for this listener. Very good voice but this music just bores the shit out of me. Yea, The Boy from Tupelo is Elvis. Cool. This was a struggle no doubt. Can't see any situation I would want to hear this again.

I was pretty bored by the halfway point, and practically asleep by the end. At least she wrote most of these tracks having mostly made her name doing covers. Her voice is nice but there's not much in the music or lyrics that I find interesting at all. Sorry Emmylou

I couldn't finish this. It was entirely too slow, boring, and meandering. It might be someone else's cup of tea, but it sure isn't mine.

Like a sort of cheaper Paul Simon? Kind of curious but I'm not sure about her voice. Interesting sounds. But mostly utter tosh.

An utterly boring album that drags on for far too long, with melodies that would make a Christian pop radio station blush, and the lyrical content isn't too far behind. Its slow, but it isn't lush, it has layered production, but there is nothing dreamy about it. Just an utter waste of time, only really challenging to your grandparents. The CD era was a blight on the music industry.

This is Emmylou Harris' nineteenth album and her first album composed of mostly her own compositions. She is best known for covering other songwriters' work. Harris' musical career has been propagated through successful collaboration with other artists. Her top songs are all collaborations with Willie Nelson and Dolly Parton. Considered contemporary folk, country folk, or Americana, this album is slow and dreadful.

Probably one of the most boring things I’ve ever heard. Every song just sounds like endless vamping, and you’re left waiting for the song to properly start every time.

One day a country album might get more than 2 stars from me. Not today.

To create such an album at the turn of the millennium is to be wilfully ignorant of over half a century's worth of musical history and innovation. The song titled in French offered hope of some flavour, but alas, it is a wet baguette.

Real relevant and impactful songwriting- a song about Elvis in..... the year 2000. A plodding and dreary mess of an album. Her singing is muddied and incomprehensible on some tracks. Often times it sounds like she didn't even know what the backing track was while she is singing. The few bluesy and interesting riffs are immediately buried in execrable vocals. Would not recommend.

Not my cup of tea. Fleetwood wannabe without any of the good qualities. I find her voice very irritating, especially with the forced vibrato… and the lyrics were a total snooze fest. The only good track was “My Antonia”, which was completely carried by Dave Matthews… so yeah.

I know she's highly respected but the album is a little boring for my tastes. It has some nice songs on it but I don't know if it's on my personal 1001 albums.
