Zzzz. Not my thing. Will I revisit?: low priority Current rating: 4.5/10
Is this country? Folk? Both? Whatever genre it is, I don't like it. Every song sounds the same and I don't find any of it very appealing. At one point I thought to myself, how did this get worse? And it turns out Dave Matthews showed up on one of the tracks.
Not for me this. It’s ‘mum music’ in my opinion. Not keen on her voice and it’s just generally not very interesting to me. Not a fan of this kind of country music in the first place.
Alright, not my style
Ugh that was a slog
Never heard of her, and not particularly interested in this album.
Snoozeville
Eh
Dear Bri'ish guy, Thank you for giving me this album. I don't know how I lived without it. Sincerely with love, Me.
Cheeks 1.5
Really pretty pointless album. Unless you were like a middle aged librarian twenty five years ago, who cares about this? So many better albums could've been here instead of this. Way too many of these older, late albums. They should've gotten someone who wasn't seventy to help with this list
🫠
Title track absolutely carries, the rest is forgettable
Ég mundir varla hvað ég hafði hlustað á eftir að ég hafði hlustað á þessa plötu. Hún skildi ekkert eftir. Ég sé hélt ég væri orðinn meiri kántrýæta en svo kemur þessi plata og þá langar mig bara ekki í meira. Ekki leiðinleg en ekki eftirminnileg heldur.
Moments of this album sounds country and other more folk. I guess it falls into Americana which can all sound very similar to me. Even though she has an iconic voice I didn't love this
Wasn't huge on this. "Hour of Gold" and the shepherd one was nice. Never heard of this artist so nice to hear something completely new.
Some songs were good. Generally not very memorable so can’t say much!
I was very relieved when this turned out to be an Americana album and not a Country one. It’s still not really my genre, but I still enjoyed this well enough. The first song was very good, and I thought it sounded a lot like Big Thief. Things got very samey quickly though and it went a bit into the background. I don’t have a lot else to say, but thought it was still perfectly good. I may like it a bit more if I did more listens.
Honestly I like her voice, but I just can't stand Americana. The intricate storytelling is annoying. I'll read a book if I'm looking for exposition. There are way too many christian references for my comfort level. It has its moments of beauty and melody, but more often than not bounces between boring and feeling like it's pandering to a specific demographic that I'm not part of. There are a few instances where it seems to break out of the Americana mold (hearing some trip-hop inspired drum production), but they are too few and still not super interesting to me.
Very bland and inoffensive, almost comforting as it's so well produced. It washed over me without making any impact whatsoever, in an almost pleasant way. I was almost impressed by how I listened to something that was almost an hour long without feeling anything whatsoever. It's music I could imagine being played in a dentists waiting room. I could see myself listening to this if I wanted to go to sleep. It's not music I would go out of my way to ever hear again though, unless I was really, really tired and had insomnia I guess? Two stars.
A bit meh
It’s fine. But emmylou has done better. Give us her best.
Stick to doing covers. Nice voice but this is really bland paint by numbers country music.
Really have no idea why this is in the list. Seems like the only remarkable thing about it is that she actually manages to write her own unremarkable songs after 20 odd albums of covers :/
I mean it's not offensively boring but it's not really that interesting and I've got really nothing to say about it.
Good performance, but the style mostly doesn't interest me. Sometimes I feel guilty for complaining about length but I'm still going to do it here: every song on Red Dirt Girl feels too long. Until you get to the last 2 tracks, everything runs 4 or 5 minutes. As a consequence, the album runs nearly an hour. Sigh.
I liked this more than I thought I would but I also didn’t like it…?
Seemed like a softer Melissa Ethridge. Heavy country bent while still trying to lean to the rock/pop charts. I think I liked her more trad country stuff more than this. The attempt to be a cross-over makes a result that is more like easy listening. When you polish off the rough edges of both genres, you leave a boring stone that slips out of your hands and your head. One Big Love is on this album but Patty Griffen version is MUCH better. Looking it up, Emmy Lou is covering the original and not doing it justice, IMHO.
This felt like the ghost of something. I actually would like to hear an album from earlier in her catalog. And I think I did earlier in this project. This album just feels like it's tired.
It's a decent spin. I will probably not return to it though.
Fine. Not a great country fan
i hate country music from the start 2/5
It’s fine. Harris’ voice is great and all the musicians play their parts well, but it’s just so dull. This is Harris’ 19th(!) album and her first with mostly original compositions and I can’t say I have much interest in hearing anyone’s 19th album. It’s usually not their best work.
Stor 2er.
If only this album could have been a set of songs like J'ai fait tout.
Langweilig.
Pleasant. But if I never heard it again, or never had heard it, I don't think my life would be any the poorer. 2⭐️
TIL that Emmylou Harris is not a good songwriter.
It’s fine. I knew nothing of her prior and doubt I will ever go out of my way to hear her again. Just not for me. But I still enjoyed it despite itself.
I love Emmylou, especially her work with Gram Parsons and her solo work immediately following, but this is not my favorite. It's boring and monotonous. And is that Dave Mathews? Fuck outta here with that shit.
Nah.
This isn't a bad album, but it took me 3 different attempts to listen to the whole thing. I'm assuming "Red Dirt Girl" is a return to form kind of album from Emmylou Harris since it came out around 15 years after her most popular songs. While I think it's important to highlight good artists deeper cuts, I don't think that this was essential listening. This is essentially off side road country music. I enjoy it, but I didn't NEED to listen to it. Best Songs: Red Dirt Girl, One Big Love Worst Songs: Tragedy, Bang the Drum Slowly
mmmm no
This was ok, but I doubt I will ever listen to this or any other Emmylou albums again
Beautiful voice, but the music didn't grab me.
Favourite song - one big love 2.5 stars
It's just so boring. Pleasant and pretty enough musically and lyrically though not without its occasional lazy feeling annoyance (everybody do like a monkey if you wanna go on and be funky" struck me as particularly lame. All of "One Big Love" in fact was a hard pass for me). It's just overall very, very boring.
En saa tästä muuta irti kuin että nättiä on… vähän liian kiltti tyttö -folkia. Herätä minut raflaavammilla soinnuilla tai sanavalinnoilla, toivon!
Same damn song 12 times
Was considering a 3 since I found it pleasant and technically good. However, I would never actually seen this out to listen to again, so that makes it a 2.
Not bad by any means but I feel like one of emmylou's earlier albums would've been a better choice. "My baby needs a sheperd" was good, but a lot of these feel a bit generic. Good album, but I think there were better choices for this list
Ugh, I don't like country music. Interesting that this was her 19th album, and the first to have a majority of the songs self-composed.
Long, Lame and uninteresting melodies 2
Meh. Had it on in the background and nothing stood out as something I'd ever choose to listen to again. Not my style at all.
Rating: 5/10 Meh.
honestly pretty dull. it was a lot of the same thing and that wasn’t good enough to keep happening
There are definitely some good ideas on this album, but my god 90% of this is just painfully boring. There are just a handful of tracks that really did stand out to me, and I must say I loved her voice. But unfortunately that doesn't save this album from a low rating.
Not very memorable
2.5
I just find this album boring, honestly.
Country music my dad would listen to
Probably as nice an album from a genre I have no interest (modern country) in, so I can see why it’s here but it’s not made me want to listen to anything else she’s done.
Eh boring
2/5. There is a story within each song that feels like I am at someone's funeral I do not know and listening to these events in their life. It's not necessarily sad, just distant. Unfortunately, that does not help the album. I kind of lose interest about a few songs in and some do stand out, but I don't think they are unique enough to keep me interested. I do enjoy the instrumentation choice with heavy non-country drums and country guitar. I think I would appreciate this one more if I was invested in Emmylou but with my lack of knowledge there, it kind of brings down the experience. That distant feeling again. Not good enough to feel like I need to listen again. Best Song: I Don't Want To Talk About It Now, Bang The Drum Slowly, One Big Love
Nice voice, some good songs. But realistically i won’t revisit this one in the future tho.
Three things I don't like: a) trip hop beats b) that weird, "I'm-in-a-cave" millennial dissonant feedback that plagues any album trying to get deep c) Emmylou Harris' voice Sucks to be me listening to this album then, aye?
No point and already forgotten
She has a nice voice, but this album is pretty bland and forgettable. Don't feel I was missing out on much.
My Antonia with Dave Matthews is the highlight
Not your usual country music album, but I'm still not a fan.
Red Dirt Girl is a perfect example of when an album (and this list) can feel like a chore. Boring, insincerely trying to rip off that ‘90s Sheryl Crow sound, and wayyyy too long. A couple okay songs, but even then 🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️
2 stars
3.5/10
I've loved the Emmylou and Trio albums I've been given so far on this list, but this album does not scratch that same itch. It's a decades later Emmylou, and much of this album is pretty boring light-country pop that sounds very 2000s without being special. That being said, Hpur of Gold is quite good, and I also liked J'ai fait tout too. Overall though, not sure this deserved to be here.
Kind of boring
It was ok but not something I’d go back to
I don't know much Emmylou Harris, I heard some of the tracks she did with Robert Plant and was never a fan. A legend of folk, the only problem is im not a folk fan!! Chilled music, nothing stands out and nothing is horrible. Its a very biege album. Favourite song: Nothing stands out Least favourite: Nothing was horrific Album artwork: A little scary
2.5
Should probably be docked down to a one for this line alone: "Everybody do like a monkey If you want to go on and be funky"
Another album in this list that’s a bit too out of my realm to fully appreciate. I don’t know if there’s some context to this I’m missing but I’m struggling to see how it’s in this list. Whether it’s some sort of seminal album that did something significant to country music? I don’t know. I’ve never heard of Emmylou Harris. I feel like she’s probably an important figure in some way and done something significant but this all just feels a bit too boring for me to be bothered to look into it. I feel like I want it to be one thing or another. Country or rock/pop. Actually I don’t want it to be country - I’m not a fan of country. Maybe that’s the problem? 2.4
first listen. Nice but underwhelming
..
A bit monotonous....
This is Cristian music, right? That only explains part of the reason why it is so pretentious and bland. This is what Britta from Community would listen to of she went to Calvin. The lyrics trick you into thinking there's meaning there, but it's just a stream of conscious nothingness. Can't think of any good lyrics? Just falsetto the fuck out of the song. This is Amy Grant if she grew up in Holland, MI and sucked.
Just another ho-hum country album indistinguishable to me from so many others.
Out of all the Emmylou Harris albums they choose this one? The whole time I'm listening to this I'm thinking that it's drum heavy and over-produced. I think that she shines in more of an acoustic/organic/country-oriented setting. This one is forgettable and doesn't inspire a repeat listen. 2.5/5
yeehaw amen 🙏 very umm religious
Not as country as I was expecting, but fairly middle of the road folk pop with an updated production. Maybe I'll like this when I'm 80 or something. She does have a great velvety voice.
Red Dirt Girl is musically more mature than yesterday's offering from a similar genre, and it's a nicer listen but not by much, still a 2/5 from me, though would be a higher 2. Her voice has more authenticity to it, even if I don't think it's technically better or anything. Get the feeling this album goes in and gets the acclaim as sort of an emeritus work, it's not close to outstanding by itself. The title track is nice though.
2.5 , not my style.
Best Song: I Don't Wanna Talk About It Now. The one song with a bit of a rock energy behind it. Worst Song: My Antonia. I don't know why, but the random dude's voice was a jarring, unwelcome addition to the album. Overall: For its genre, it's good. The problem is that I don't really like this genre. The breathless wispiness starts to grate by the end of the album.
I've never listened to Emmylou Harris but apparently she's a huge name I just never crossed. These past three albums we've listened to all have a similar vibe and all sing with a lot of depth about subjects which aren't carrying the same weight. Band the Drum Slowly felt personal. I do like her voice but nothing is really standing out.
I like her voice but the music sounds like background music for a southern drama that you don't really notice.
This sucks. It sounds like every other album from every other artist 20-30 years past their heyday was putting out at this time. All the boredom of easy listening, plus all the unrelatability of most country/folk, and topped of with a big pile of who gives a flying fuck about this simple guitar that you need to extend every song by 60-120 seconds so I can hear more of it.
Just OK
I'm sure she has a lot more better albums than this from the 70s or 80s. It's too mellow and overproduced for my taste.
Klote country, beetje balen dat deze lijst zó US based is
Te country, niet helemaal me ding. Ga er wel helemaal van linedancen
I’m not a huge fan of country & early 2000 country with the added pop beats is even worse for me. I think it’s cool she wrote her own lyrics for this album but for me I just did not enjoy.
she's a legend
Maudlin and pedestrian (neither of which are necessarily bad things but you know... meh)
Für country ziemlich gut
Oui CT bien ça m'a rappelé dolly parton un peu 2.5
Slow, sleepy, and mostly boring instrumentals supplemented by a grating singer who breathily adds an extra syllable to every other word. Not my cup of tea
Much better than the other one on list, but still C&W which I in general detest. Wished she used het beautiful voice for music that really moves me.
Didn't hate it but it became background fast and never pulled me back in.
FAVO: Red Dirt Girl, My baby needs a shepherd
I usually like country, but I found this just so boring.
Love Emmylou, but this a bit slow overall for my tastes. I prefer to switch it up every few tracks.
Are the lyrics good? The music doesn't compel me to care.
Only listened to 2 songs
Not a big country fan, and I already see Willie Nelson coming up in my backlog. Also, the fact that this is her 19th album, but I couldn't name a single song by her (or even recognize one of her "hits" by title) despite being raised in a country music bar in rural WI in the late 70s/early 80s. If I *have* to listen to country, give me Johnny Cash or Dolly Parton, or even the *really* old stuff they put on the radio stations in Fallout. That said, at least it's at least it's fairly inoffensive for country.
Those beats? It was a bad time in production. Not a fun listen.
I quite like this genre but as with many albums on this list I'm not sure why this album is on here. She has many better albums
I just don’t care
Musician is talented, no denying that. Not my type of music, nothing really stuck out for me either.
nope
Put me to sleep.
Even with such a rich, full sound I don't think this album is for me. Somewhere in the vicinity of Sheryl Crow or the Chicks, but not nearly as catchy.
Not sure what in this album reminds me of high school more - the fact that it sounds like boring Christian music or the fact that it has My Antonia in it. 4/10
Inoffensively bland. I can't give it a 1 as I would have it on in the background, but this is nothing special whatsoever.
-told the website not to give me country albums. It has some elements of rock…so I guess it still gave me this one. -I got to the fourth song in the album. I liked the third song, because it felt like it had more intensity and there was more going on with the vocals -the second and fourth song don’t sound originial to me because they have almost exactly the same melodies from Christian songs. For example, the fourth one resembled the song that goes “God you have been faithful. Oh God, you’ve been so, so good.” -the lyrics tend to be repetitive
Not my Kind of music.
Was hoping for more out of this, Red Dirt road was pretty good but rest was really tepid.
Gillar röst, men fruktansvärt enformigt och tråkigt. Lika tråkig som Äpplet faktiskt.
Mest meh. Mest trist.
Tråkigt men hyfsat ok i bakgrunden, eftersom man glömmer bort att lyssna
Country music is fuckin shithouse
I think I might go with another reviewer who notes this is one of her later albums and although quite pleasant it's not really that groundbreaking or unique.
Pretty, but not for me
A weird thing to be in this list. Suffers from the choice to make everything sound big & full & atmospheric. Emmylou Harris's singing and guitar playing are better than everything else on this but they're kinda smothered. a duet with Dave Matthews dropped this down to a 2. music: music. (⌐▢_▢)
I like Emmylou’s voice a lot, but I liked her a lot more on a 70s Gram Parsons record than I do here, with a 2000s country sheen that is hard to get past.
Not my thing, don’t care for the timbre of her voice.
Hørte ikke hele, kristent dritt
I like her voice but most of this album is very slow and doesn't really do anything that interesting. There's some good lyrics but they are wasted seen as you'll probably doze off to the boring compositions before you ever hear them. I found this album to be quite inspiring, because if this album can reach the top 1000, then anything can. That's not me saying this album is bad, just mediocre.
In one ear out the other.
It's fine, I guess, but it's long and boring. Plus, I'm not crazy about country music anyway, though I've definitely heard worse. Don't really know if this needs to be on the list. It's something I'll definitely forget that I listened to. My favourite song was J'ai fait tout.
Mediocre to okay country
Meh
It was all right, not bad and I somewhat enjoyed it but since I dont actually like this stuff I cant give it a 3 >Music for old women. I'm neither of those yet >yet 🤨
Christian country album?
At the start I was think "oh, it's a reinvention album." Modern production sound for an artist who had been around for 30 years, 19th studio album. But reading the wiki, it's kind of worse than that. The 18 prior albums were mainly cover songs? Kinda lame. She's got a great voice but this album didn't really connect
There was nothing egregiously wrong with this album, but nothing that really made it stand out, either. It was pleasant enough, but I'm never going to go back to it.
C- The Pearl 2 Michelangelo 2 I Don't Wanna Talk About It Now 2 Tragedy 2 Red Dirt Girl 1 My Baby Needs a Shepherd 2 Bang the Drum Slowly 2 J'ai fait tout 3 One Big Love 3 Hour of Gold 2 My Antonia 1 Boy from Tupelo 2 This was so f***ing boring. Worst of all, my Apple Music personalized Radio Station thinks I like this kind of music now, so it's playing me random 2000's female country and it's soooooo bad.
Honestly just bland and boring. It was fine enough in the background but genuinely hard to put any attention to.
All of these red dirt albums are starting to blend together and even use the same tracks reinterpreted through barely-discernible lens. Harris’ voice is great, but I need something a bit different and novel to keep me interested in the genre rather than the same dead horse beaten for the nth time.
No thank you.
I don’t want to talk about it now, tragedy, j’ai fait tout
Highlights: "Tragedy," "Red Dirt Girl," "My Baby Needs a Pearl" The lyrics are so dramatic that they need more grounded production. It would be hard to have production *less* grounded. Having the space age pitch shifted P+W reverb trails on this with the AIPAC exotica beatz is way too much. It really needed to be her alone in a room or something similar. Some of the sentiments ring true, but I get the nagging feeling that this is her overtly trying to be Leonard Cohen and just giving us lazy expositions of Cohen with a bunch of mystical hooey on top. This is on the list because gormless media tastmakers love whenever a "country" artist does some nominal performative left politics like "the bible DOESN'T tell me so", insofar as country is basically a floating ethnic category like "R&B". She lands some good punches in any given song, but it's a long album for this much moaning over music that is also moaning while also horrendously overwrought.
Forgettable
My mum would love this album.
Not for me
beautiful lyrics but ultimately a little boring
This was not made for me, thats for sure
This album was ok. I will never listen to it again.
By the second song, I was ready to rate this as a 2 star album. I get that maybe it had some impact at the time, apparently it won the Grammy for Best contemporary folk album, but it seemed like a pretty average folk album and didn't do anything interesting.
- Quality Americana/Folk - Really intrigued by some of the drum beats and sounds - Some songs have a hymn-like vibe - I enjoy some of the backup vocals (One Big Love)
Didn't care for the last thing from her (Pieces of the Sky, 1975), didn't care for this. There was pretty clearly some effort made to modernize the instrumentation to the era, which sometimes made for interesting fusion, because she's still doing country singing over everything. Like they had synths in the 70s and weren't using them back then, so I'm fascinated that the year 2000 apparently called for bringing them in
Idk it was alright I didn’t really like the drums but the songwriting was alright 2/5
Pretty enough but never get like it was going anywhere. The older style country singing is also not my favorite. Standout was probably the duet with Dave matthews
Not really for me.
More what i'd expect country to sound like. Not for me, at all.
Singer songwriter - mostly writer I presume
Nice enough, nothing that struck me.
Not quite country enough for me
Todella tylsä eikä koskettanut mustaa sielua.
Mukava ja rauhallinen. Tylsä paikoin
Too much Bible and God shit for me. I did like her voice, and that one song with Dave Matthews.
Don’t like country. So this album isn’t for me.
I’m not totally against this album. I’m getting quite the appreciation for country. There were a few tracks that almost did it for me, but not all the way. Not bad, just no particular bangers. Great voice, very chill album. No playlist adds, 2.
Folk-singer/songwriter, god vokal, lidt kedeligt
There is not much to elaborate in regards to this album. "Red Dirt Girl" is nineteenth(?!) Record in Emmylou Harris' career. It's a folk/country music, which unfortunately combines two genres I'm not particularly fond of. It feels like a deeply American album, so my connection to it isn't really there. The self-titled track is supposedly the most popular song by Harris, but I really couldn't understand why. It's a rather typical song slightly in style of Dolly Parton, who I think is much superior singer in Country style. I like the song "The Pearl", it had some rock elements into it, so it stand out amongst the others, but that's all that I could enjoy. Discover, Listen, Forget.
Emmylou Harris is a 70s country artist who contributed with Dolly in 1987 in her famous Trio album and provided background vocals in lesser-known records by Gram Parsons, Bob Dylan, and Guy Clark among many others. In this late-career record, she incorporates modern production skills to fuse a somewhat indie instrumental style with her traditional country folk approach. In fact, the last song reminds me of Uncle Tupelo, a similarly sounding alternative country contemporary. (I know it's supposed to reference Elvis.) The instrumentation can be a bit spacious and ethereal at times, but feels more like minor ornamentation and only makes the songs more bearable. But at the end of the day, it's still just a woman singing about sorrow and family troubles with a guitar, nothing to write home about. I think a lot of is decent, but of course, it drags on, despite most of it is completely forgettable. Favorites: I Don't Wanna Talk About It Now, Bang the Drum Slowly, J'ai fait tout, Hour of Gold
I can imagine this as being pretty popular in 2000. In 2023, not so much.
not very good
For being a legendary country singer this album is really bland. It's overproduced and nothing really sticks out. It's almost like the album was run through a pop filter and everything got smoothed out.
Never heard this record and surprised it’s on this list considering the rest of her career/discography. I’ve never been a huge fan of her voice, but I like some things she’s done, like grievous angel and some of the other stuff with gram parsons. Some of her live stuff is kind of cool. Bruce Springsteen and his wife sing backup on track 4 of this record. 2.7? I wouldn’t listen again
This seems like it's going to be country. Huh, yup, seems like it, but like... weird country maybe? Idk, I'll give a few track a try, but this might be a skip. Good chance for me to explain my rating system and put it in writing for myself. One star = bad bad, will not listen to again. Two = I see the merit, but maybe not my thing or not my genre. Three = a solid album, I could see myself listening to it again. Four = I'm almost certainly saving this album, and I'll probably listen to it again more than once. Five = a great album, it will be saved, added to my heavy rotation, and likely bought on vinyl. Okay, so is this country or not? Maybe this is actually like, what's it called, adult alternative? Like Melissa Ethridge or something. I'm more neutral to it so far, like it isn't bad three minutes in. Way better than the Neu album or that dog shit Velvet Underground album. She definitely has a nice voice, and the lyrics seem solid (I'm not following them real closely). The title track is, so far, my least favorite. It's like straightforward cliché country. Still not a bad album 6 songs in, but I am getting kind of bored of it. Oh motherfucker, Dave Matthews is on this album? Hahaha weird. Had to look it up, thought it might have been the Mumford and Sons guy.
Dirty, dirty red girl. This record dripped down my chin like being jizzed on by the entire Chelsea first team and backroom staff.
Bad/okay
Bizarre blend of country and triphop that I cannot get behind
Kind of slow and boring, nothing really stands out a great.
Favourite song: Michelangelo One for the karaoke: Michelangelo to get deep One for the car: One Big Love (at least I think it was that) Seemed to never end
I was looking forward to a little country number and whilst I enjoyed the first 10-15 mins a bit, I got bored and felt it went on too long. Cba
Not for me
Didn't enjoy this very much, but didn't make my ears blead
A low 2. Only gets that because some of the songs weren't completely terrible.
So many interesting melodic choices. Instead of going home, the vocals rise, or a minor lift instead of major, eventually to lead home but such an interesting journey
After 429 albums my main observation of this list is that there is too much Elvis Costello, too much Time Waits, and far, far too much country music. I quite liked this initially, but as it wore on I found myself increasingly bored and having nothing really to say about it. Basically fine but not for me. Rating: 2/5 Playlist track: One Big Love Date listened: 08/09/22
Meh
Lijepo.
Nice voice, but no way this is something you need to hear before you die. The NINETEENTH album by her? Was this seriously such a huge step up from the first eighteen? Always eyebrow-raising when you check the Legacy section on Wikipedia and the only sentence is "The album was included in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die." Also not a big fan of country or folk.
very boring... all the time throughout this album i wished it to end
Very standard country album to me. Not bad but don’t see what makes this so special or deserving to be on the list. But country is not my genre so maybe I’m not looking for the right things
One of those artists that I really should know more about, but sadly there are some major gaps in my listening history. There's only so much listening time available each day. This is defo Bob Harris alt-country R2 territory. Not the type of album I'd fire up for a Friday night. It had depth, both in terms of tunes and texture. That sounds pretentious bollocks. Sometimes it's the only way to describe AOR and the lack of irony or even humour within.
Not for me
Inoffensive country music, but not something I'd listen to.
Nothing special at all. Emmylous voice is great and the music is quite soothing, but I'm honestly a little suprised theres so much country music in this list and I found difficulty distinguishing between much of it. This was mostly just one in the masses.
Dull and dreary.
Didn't nobody ask for this christian shit
It's americana I guess? Could be worse probably
Oh god. I probably should be nice. I don't like this record. It's not for me. A lot of the records on this list aren't "for me." I get that. But, the thing is, this record doesn't compel me to even try. I'm sure there are a handful of Emmylou Harris records that I would like. But, I'm sure they don't involve this new-agey production. 2/5 because you don't slight a legend with a 1/5, but that's probably the only reason why.
Though I'm not really a big fan of the gospel/folk/country & western genre - I do like Emmylou Harris. She's got a unique "storyteller" voice that is perfectly suited to the genre. But, this seems misplaced and overproduced in the year 2000. It's like they were trying to make her relevant to a wider audience (queue Dave Matthews as a guest star on one track), but it didn't work. Sorry.
2/5 nothing memorable
Pref: The Pearl Moins prefs: Tragedy, Boy From Tupelo
Nice enough listen. Not much grabbed me but pleasant enough.
She undoubtedly has a lovely voice. But the album wasn’t very inspiring, it was quite boring actually.
Allt í lagi. Ekkert rokna kontrístuð.
80% boring
This is not good. What the hell is this? Do people actually find this enjoyable? It is like a worse Bruce Springsteen.
Only listened to the first couple of songs, didn’t seem like my kind of thing. I’m not into Jesus stuff.
2.5 / 5 Pleasant to listen to and not bad in any way, shape or form but nothing special to be honest.
Fine album, but not my favorite. A lot of snooze songs but “I don’t wanna talk about it now” is the type of the song that you listen to sitting around a campfire with like 5-8 people just vibing and enjoying life.
I'm going to be honest: I didn't listen to the whole thing.. I had enough. I didn't like it.. it was boring and bland.
I kind of liked the title track but the rest left me cold. The mild electronic backing added next to nothing. Probably exciting if you were already a fan, but certainly not winning any.
I find it hard to believe that anyone named Emmylou isn't going to do country. Yeah it's country. Like a theatre kid doing country. Not sure how I feel about it. Ok according to wiki she was already in her 50s when this came out. Definitely didn't get that vibe. 2/5 all the same, just don't care about it.
Great voice, but she's using it for the wrong purpose.
It's not quite as country twangy as where we started 26 years ago, but the music is still pretty boring. Pretty voice, but a slow pace and nothing particularly catchy to hang onto. Snooze-fest.
Bit boring
meh
While country music isn't my thing, this is obviously far from Harris' best
The style of country is too melancholy and drawn out with the singing. Not really enjoyed. 3.9/10
31. MotA: Michelangelo \"O the dragons are gonna fly tonight\"
Not in the mood for this at all
country is not my thing but she has a good voice for sure
Equalizzazione pessima!
Beautiful voice, some really strong tracks. But realistically won’t revisit
Interesting songs and pleasant vocals. Unlikely to revisit this album though.
It's an easy to listen and overall likeable countryish-pop album, but some of its songs are kind of meh. I didn't like the mixing.
Meh. Super singer-songwriter-y. Probably good to those who like that, but it just sounds like too much feels. Not for me.
Hat mich nicht so gekriegt. Musik für ältere Leute (hey, no age-ism!) würde ich sagen.
Found it kind of vanilla
2/5 I don't get how this one made the list. It doesn't stand out in any way.
Boring....
2 - Leider nix für mich
It's fine. 5/10
Stellenweise einfach unerträglich, gerade so 2 Sterne.
Not my favorite at all
IDK, Emmylou is great...but this is late nineties emo-country
It's a typical Country music album. I've now had a 21st Century album on nine out of the last ten days in this generator. This is the fourth consecutive day I've generated an album between 2000-2004. Last year on this day, I generated an album from a Country singer who debuted in the 1960s. Favorite Track: "Bang The Drum Slowly".
Tepid
Uninspiring folk that I was not in the mood for today. Sorry. 1/5
No this is not my bag at all. Kind of pop country? Not for me

Not my thing
That's definitely not an album I need to hear before I die. Thank you, next.
I don't care how many Emmylou Harris album the 1001 albums to hear before you die list throws at me I don't think i will ever be super big into her music. Red Dirt Girl is the latest in her string of projects and it feels exactly like how you'd expect it to, old lady being retrospective on a Country soundscape. Look I don't mind this album but I am not going to sit here and say it is the best thing in the world because it just isn't no matter how hard I may try to convince myself. I don't care for Emmylou's music and that is simply a preference thing. My preference finds this to be a pretty average album with not a whole lot to say or offer, what else do you want me to say?
Variety: 1 Adequacy: 2 Listenability: 1 Uniqueness: 1 Emotionality: 2 = 1.4 rounded down to a 1 "And when finally the bottom fell out, I became withdrawn / The only thing I knew how to do / Was to keep on keepin' on" Harris is one of those people who I've heard various tracks from over the years, and my reaction has always been of the lukewarm variety. I'm not the biggest folky singer songwriter enthusiast, and the country leanings never inspired too much further investigation. None of those qualifiers necessarily turn me away from an artist on their own, but that combination is a doozy. I find I bump up against stuff by Kris Kristofferson, Townes Van Zandt equally for example. And while I can see the craft and even enjoy some James Taylor stuff, it is VERY far outside my wheelhouse. There's got to a heavy dose of catchy melodies for it to gel for me. Someone like Neko Case is a modern example of an artist I adore, who on paper does not sound a zillion miles away from Harris. But here we are. This one also comes later in her career, so wondering if I'm going to get a "past their prime" Dylan or Springsteen vibes off of this. THE TRACKS "The Pearl" - This was not what I was expecting. Feels like some middle-eastern touches thrown in to the rhythms, and maybe some hevy electronic processing. Capable and has a not-uncatchy vocal melody, but getting very strong Phil Collins Tarzan soundtrack vibes on this. Kind of just on the edge of the kind of adult contemporary sound that with a good shove could push it into the Christian pop ravine to mingle with all the discarded Amy Grant albums. "Michelangelo" - This is much more of what I was thinking the whole album might sound like. Kind of haunting folk balladry. A little too overproduced for this type of thing. I would have maybe liked to have heard the creaking guitar strings and maybe some thumping on the body of the guitar for a beat. It still would not get this into the highlights, but imagine this as a very simple mid 70s sort of thing. "I Don't Wanna Talk About It Now" - Oof... that keyboard preset rhythm was a rough start, but otherwise this is a bit more of a success. Still not my thing, but I can at least see the appeal. This is reminding me of stuff by Meredith Brooks, or Cheryl Crow. Strong hooks, and composition, but drowning in overproduction. "Tragedy" - This sounds like an AI trying to emulate an Amy Mann song. The elements are there, but it just sounds generic. "Red Dirt Girl" - The first track on the album I found myself warming to. This leans much more traditional country with some added effects laden guitars. This is a lot stronger than any of the previous tracks for sure. But... But I would still have rather heard this as a stripped down solo guitar track with some warm 70s production. "My Baby Needs a Shepherd" - This one has instrumentation and a sound that is not too distant from "Hold On" by Tom Waits. If we just look at the instrumentation, what separates these two the most is the production. one is big, clean, and generic. the other intimate, warm, and rough around the edges. Both are most assuredly well thought and designed with intent. But one fails for me completely. "Bang the Drum Slowly" - This one works much better. Scaled back and just Harris with some spare instrumentation. Then the HEAVILY processed beat drops in and messes up what could have been a nice emotional number. Imagine this as a gospel number with JUST the vocals. That would have been great. The quality of the material and vocals rescue this from the fussy overbaked tone. "J'Ai Fait Tout" - Ugh... more bleeps and bloops. "Grandma, wear this Kangol hat - it'll look great on you!". This one was the most cringeworthy track. A rare DNF from me. "One Big Love" - Yikes. The opening of this sounded like when you hear one of those soundalike rock songs in a tv show or movie that you're watching where they couldn't clear the rights to re-use the original. Same thing with some classic soundalike wrestling intro music ( looking at you specifically DDP!). In song in question would be "You DOn't Know How It Feels" by Tom Petty , released 1994. Go ahead, look it up and compare. I'll wait... See! Otherwise , this felt much more like an unoffenisive bit of pop country. "Hour of Gold" - Did Sting secretly produce this one? This has a very nonspecific new agey vibe I could imagine on one of his later offerings. Harris deivers a fine vocal performance, but that's the only nice thing I can say about it. "My Antonia" - I might sound like a broken record at this point, but I once again this feels like Christian "praise" music. More so than anything else even on here. Just close your eyes and insert some random Jesus's in there and you'll hear it. "Boy from Tupelo" - I guess this was bout Elvis? I dunno, I was pretty checked out by this point. This was so generic. HIGHLIGHTS - "Red Dirt Girl" MIDLIGHTS - "I Don't Wanna Talk About It Now" - "Bang the Drum Slowly" LOWLIGHTS - "The Pearl" - "Michelangelo" - "Tragedy" - "My Baby Needs a Shepherd" - "J'Ai Fait Tout" - "One Big Love" - "Hour of Gold" - "My Antonia" FINAL THOUGHTS I can't say Harris failed to make the album she wanted to, as it's a professional outing by a veteran performer, and has all the hallmarks of a well-crafted attempt to reinvigorate a career. And by all accounts it was successful. There are a TON of artists who count Harris as a prime influence, and this even got some mainstream traction. It just feels like old person cosplay at times. Yes, I know she was only 53 when this came out. And this is maybe more of a successful attempt than some latter day Dylan, but that doesn't mean it's great. It might be good though. It's just aimed entirely over my head. Without sounding too harsh and cliched, this fits perfectly in my mind into the type of music you might hear in a Starbucks. Unoffensive, vanilla, and with the trappings of the day ( drum loops, antiseptic production, but with plenty of folky guitars and piano touches to give the illusion that this is a new artist. Not accusing Harris of trying pull one over, but it just feels like a producer got a hold of some Harris material and went to town with it, and you lose the artist in the atmosphere. Wonder how much my opinion would change if I heard a "naked" version of this album, similar to the Let It Be mix. PLAYLIST ALTERATIONS - Not sure I'll ever be revisiting this one FURTHER LISTENING - The Ballad of Sally Rose by Emmy Lou Harris - Bachelor No.2 by Aimee Man - Car Wheels on a Gravel Road by Lucinda Williams - Time Sex Love by Mary Chapin Carpenter
Couldn't stand it.
Gentle western music. Guitar and a solo female voice. not my thing
Not for me. Thanks x
Twee country bollocks
Pretty dull, I guess this was only included because of name recognition
Candidate for least liked album on this list. Not even a useful sleep aid.
I could never find myself telling anyone to go listen to this.
1/5
fav songs: michelangelo forgettable, dull, americana 10/100
Depressing lyrics about alcoholism and loneliness. Probably just what Americamns need during the Trump residency.
BORING
Snork

Uninteresting
??? Folk/Country...c
No artist or band that started in the late 60s and early 70s went on to create anything noteworthy in the 00's and beyond... With the SOLE exception of David Bowie. She is definitely not David Bowie.
An incredibly dull and boring album that drones on for far too long. The songs feel like they would fit in better in a modern church environment but that might just be me. Unfortunately my first 1*
only song i remotely liked even a little was my antonia
She has successfully crossed over two of my least favourite musical genres. A dull, warbly slog. My first 1 star.
If I could give this negative stars I would
Fryktelig kjedelig!
SNORK. Hater dette.
Not a fan of this at all, hear voice and lyrics just annoy me. Makes me angry
Good voice overall but melodies seem repetitive, almost churchy, and the music feels a bit dated. Country isn’t my favorite genre so maybe I’m the problem. 1.0/5.0
Nope. Not doing this one.
Two albums in a row I didn’t finish. Who’s putting these in here?
Emmylou has a really great voice. It’s too bad that most of the songs on this are so bland and dull that I can’t recall any of them. Except One Big Love, because the lyrics sound like someone who got their first rhyming dictionary and just had to give it a whirl. Congrats to Emmylou for putting out at least 19 albums, but this seat should be reserved for an album that’s the complete package, and this album is far from that.
Absolutely not... Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ in part Revisit ❌️ ★☆☆☆☆ (2/10)
Boring af
very slow, and no likey
Couldn’t keep listening and had to stop halfway through. Musical equivalent of watching paint dry.
Awful...
Emmylou has a great voice but the weird techno-y country vibe isn’t working for me. Weird production choices. I’ll pass.
