Reviews (page 11 of 13)
Enjoyable to a fan of the genre. Good listen.
Awesome!
Fun!
Nice rock stuff, gross album cover :p
Did this album drag a bit in the middle? Yes. Was the strength of the beginning and ending enough to make me forget that? Also, yes. I haven't listened to much of The Who, but my dad really likes them (as dads are known to do). Although I am not a father, I agree with their consensus. This album was so fun to listen to. The lyrics were strong, and the music itself was engaging and exciting. Like I said, the middle did lull a bit, but who cares when the rest of it was so fire. I don't think this is a perfect album, but it is a very, very good one. And the album cover is one of the very best ever.
It sounds like what I expect classic rock to sound like. Solid with some great songs but overall not spectacular to me
Classic Who, what's not to like. Great listen and album.
The Who: Who's Next: This is a fine album. It sounds like music from the 60s and 70s and isn't really that remarkable? Its good, but it doesn't stand out aside from Baba O'Riley. Like I enjoyed it, but its just solidly enjoyable and nothing more. 7/10
I didnt realize a lot of songs I already knew were by the who. Good chill vibes. Dad rock
Pretty good
Okay. Behind blue eyes was pretty good though.
Wouldn't be rushing back to listen again.
It's been a minute since I've listened to this, but revisiting it confirmed my memory of it being...fine. It's bookended by two undeniable classics, with "Baba O'Riley" remaining the Who's high point (even with being massively overplayed). And "Bargain" is solid. But the rest isn't nearly on the same level.
You know when Alan Partridge is asked what his favourite Beatles album is and he says “best of”? That’s me with The Who. When they are good (won’t get fooled again, baba o’Riley, behind blue eyes) they are in the very top percentage of rock bands. But then they do rock opera bollocks and I lose interest. Similar to Pink Floyd’s The Wall where I’m waiting for the belters and sitting through songs from a musical bored silly. Iconic album cover though.
This is my 2nd Who album. The first one I really enjoyed and scored a 4. Most of this one feels unremarkable and I was thinking 2/5 before Going Mobile and Behind Blue Eyes which were stronger. This feels most classic rock which as a rule I do not enjoy. 3/5.
It's fine.
Baba O’Riley is a cracking album opener. Unfortunately whilst not bad the other songs dont live up to it’s standard until you get to Behind Blue eyes and Won’t get fooled again. For me the Who were at their best when Moon was let loose on the drums which certainly applied to the opening and clising tracks on this album (and even behind blue eyes to dome degree) but overall there’s not enough to elevate this album from a solid album to a great one.
I enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I did - more than last week’s offering - and there is nobody more surprised by that fact than me. “Baba O’Riley” is iconic and did a very weird thing, where it filled my chest and made me a bit emotional. The “filler” tracks, if you like, were fine, and then the album ends with the classic “Won’t Get Fooled Again”. Does it need to be 8mins long? Does any song? I think we know how I feel about this by now.
Baba O'Riley is a great start to an album, which is both promising and worrying (a disturbing number of albums seem to start with the most well-known - and best - song). But this seems to keep up a good standard throughout. I like Tommy a lot, which was the same era, so the fact I like this album so much more than I liked My Generation makes a lot of sense. This should be a 3.5, but as no half stars, it's going to still get a 3 (given it's not quite 4 star worthy for me).
Rating: 6.5/10 The ending surprised me by being so epic, Very interesting and impactful album for it's time it sounds good even by being so old it's still not that outdated sounding wise but the songs were unecessarily long and bloated especially in the middle bit of the record, My best song was bargain but i dont think i will be visiting it back and replaying it much.
Some is real good. Some is very forgetable. I understand a legacy pick; but there is a lot.lf dad rock on there. Dont know we needed the who
Some great songs but a little too classic rock radio for my ears
Solid album. Takes big shits all over that pinball wizard garbage.
Very monochromatic but such a smooth and easy going album.
some of these tracks get a little bland but the standouts like the opener are great
große Nummer dabei, nur die ganz großen noch nicht
I love the songs on this album, but they do run to sound the same
This album really is carried by its first and last two tracks, the middle felt like a sonic wasteland. As for those minutes of my life… they’re all wasted!
A good record that has all of the tracks that I know from The Who. Lots of hits, all of them enjoyable, and not very many lows. Favourite Track(s): Baba O'Riley Least Favourite Track(s): Getting Mobile
I kinda wanted to give it a 4 because the opener is a classic but to be honest, I didn't love the rest as much, sorry. Still a very nice album.
A pretty solid album in many senses but only really has the one stand out track, Won’t Get Fooled Again
The popular songs are bangers, everything else is pretty mid
Although rock, some chords remind of country and some blues/reggae influences. Great listen. There's a whole song my which felt like the "My wife so bad" joke as a song... but I am probably wrong lol. For the time frame, it might suit. Except that song everything was good. Seems like it was on purpose as parody really. Won't get fooled again and the song is over are really good songs.
Like other albums before it on my list, this album mixes some big hits with a lot of duds. I dislike the interlude in “Bargain”; “The Song Is Over” made my eyes roll; and “Getting In Tune” made me straight up annoyed. But the slosh in the middle is bookended by two all time classics in “Baba O’Riley” and “Won’t Get Fooled Again”. Ultimately I decided that as a whole I didn’t like it enough to give it higher score, so it gets 3/5.
the bangers are good but the other ones that don’t matter don’t really matter
ive sucked ur dads dick to this album
Yeah now we are on the right track.
A good album with a very strong start and end but found a lot of the songs made me want a bit more. Some fantastic songs, but some just ok
Awesome album by a goated band. 7.3/10
Solid Who, similar to Tommy and Quadrophenia minus the rock opera vibes. Just straight ahead rock. Solid bass and drums.
Bra arenarock. Jävlar vilken trummis Keith Moon var. En stark trea.
Svårbedömt. I vissa fall bra malande rock. Holland-Dozier-Holland-dängan Baby don’t you do it är riktigt fin. Men den var ju inte med i originalutgåvan så skit i det. Vissa spår kunde lika gärna varit hämtade från ett Baywatch soundtrack. Musikal, rockopera, punk? Oavsett bra driv från Moon plattan igenom.
Classic rock stuff , enjoyed the riftier parts … the soft stuff don’t hit as much for me but it was a fun bike ride album
Songs are a little longer than I’d like but sound good
Solid rock album. Some filler but there are some hits on here as well. Songs added to/on playlist: - Behind Blue Eyes - Won’t Get Fooled Again
"When my fist clenches - crack it open", good advice. This is the best full album The Who gave us. Not a wasted track.
Enjoyed
Pretty solid
Did not finish, I can tell it’s good and had quality musical quality, but it just didn’t stick up to me
Very wild album cover font decisions. I think this is our first album from The Who, who I know very little about consciously, but somewhat more subconsciously. (Not quite enough to distinguish between Roger Waters and Roger Daltrey and possibly Roger Dalton, a Timothy Dalton-Roger Moore hybrid I invented, though.) I first heard 'Baba O'Riley' from Jordis Unga on the great show "Rockstar INXS". (Actually, that's probably where I first heard of like 30% of the classic rock songs on this list.) The original does a decent job at living up to the cover. I like the jolly little ostinato and the fact that people mess up the song's title regularly. Hard to take any song called 'My Wife' seriously post-Borat. I like the random horn part, but this song (and others) are a little too country-sounding for my preference. I like 'The Song is Over' mainly because it sounds like a Disney movie soundtrack song. Like 'Down to Earth' from Wall-E or something from Tarzan. Genesis Does Disney. I like 'Getting in Tune' because it's very repetitive, with interesting Americanized vowels. I like 'Going Mobile' because of the synths and the "beep beep", although I don't agree with the song's message. "Watch the police and taxman miss me" is kind of a modern phrasing, though! I first heard 'Behind Blue Eyes' from Limp Bizkit (and listen, I bet a lot of people my age did), and I did not like it at all. Apparently that was a bad cover, and I do like this original better, but it's a little too slow for me still. I first heard of 'Won't Get Fooled Again' thanks to that classic GWB quote, "There's an old saying in Tennessee—I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee—that says, Fool me once, shame on...shame on you. Fool me—you can't get fooled again." The song lives up to the quote. Pretty good; far too long. Even though I wrote a novel here, this was like a 3.5 for me. I bet it's got a high average review, but other than Baba O, I probably wouldn't listen to any of these tracks on my own time. So another 3 for the pile.
Hit songs only.
Never heard a full album of The Who. It was an OK experience but honestly expected moree. The production is Ok, some voxals are good and it is good on the background but ..meh
I honestly thought I liked The Who more before starting this list. Incredibly strong opening to the album, but the middle section is such a struggle to get through. The highs are highs, but the rest is incredibly uninteresting
Some standout tracks that break the mold and serve as stupendous arena rock anthems, but outside of the bookend tracks the remainder of the track list lacks the same substance and sounds cliched by comparison
“To win you I’d stand naked, stoned and stabbed” 66/100 Favorite: Bargain
A few catchy classics. Passionate and powerful. Some are less interesting.
Klassikkokamaa. Who on niitä bändejä joiden biisejä on varmasti tullut kuultua mutta ei tiennyt että Whosta on kysymys.
Townsend's ambitious Lifehouse project was abandoned, and this album is the result - The Who probably set themselves up as a more straightforward rock band for the 70s in the process. The music is still thrilling for the most part - obviously, Moon is still behind the kit - but I can't help feeling the beat group, art-pop version of The Who from the previous decade is still the version I prefer.
Pretty good album but overhyped imo. Not the biggest fan of The Who tbh kinda get tired of Roger Daltreys voice. The bass on this album is pretty unreal but a lot of the songs don’t rlly grab my attention. However, the hits on this album are some of the biggest songs of the 70s so that is why this is getting 3 stars.
eh, very average dad rock
The most classic of rocks
Rock, 1971 -> 3
liked it but a bit repetitive, i didn’t find anything special about it :/ would hear it again though
Opening track is a classic, the keys intro and then the strings at the end, bellissimo. The rest of the album 2-5 hasn’t been that exciting for me.
chato
Opening SO strong with Baba O'Riley. I haven't ever listened to a Who album from beginning to end, I'm looking forward to it now. Oh shit I love that I have the option on Tidal to listen to it on Dolby. I wish I could listen to only Atmos. I should try and figure out how to do that. lol. I can see why the Who is one of the best rock bands ever. The songs, despite being sort of weird, the 70s roaring guitar and the sort of wandering long songs are great. That being said I don't know if this is necessarily my bag despite it being very good technically.
Generally I just find most 70s album rock to be kinda annoying and I dunno, dirty sounding, but not in a good way. More in like that dog-eared bargain-bin vinyl smell of mold and dust in an old record shop dirty where you have to wash your hands after browsing the crates. Just kinda tired, grimy, and played out. Or dirty like cruising in a Chevy El Camino with the windows down when it's 98 degrees out and your dad is wearing a tanktop while smoking Marlboro Reds, hot wind blowing armpit sweat and tobacco ash everywhere. 70s album rock on the shitty car stereo is the soundtrack of that. Maybe that vibe is some kinda heaven to someone else, but to me it's an aesthetic that I think I probably grew up with a little and find totally repellent now. Despite thinking Quadrophenia is a damn-near perfect film, I've never been a big fan of The Who, probably on account of my aforementioned overall distaste for the genre. Given that, I have to admit Baba O'Riley is a fucken epic track. Bold choice to open the record with it, because it gives such end-credits vibes. That said, many of the tracks on this record feel like they would be a good last song to close out an album, (The Song Is Over, Behind Blue Eyes, etc). It seems clear that these songs were part of a larger concept, as they seem to fit together as a whole pretty well. I am surprised to discover that I don't mind this record at all, even though I don't anticipate having a yen to listen to it much after this. A couple tracks are familiar already, and represent rock solid performances and songwriting. I would definitely give this five stars if it aligned with my personal tastes more. I especially appreciate the record cover art concept that is a literal piss-take.
dad rock dad rock dad rock
Obviously a classic, but I was never able to get into The Who like other people. I had the greatest hits and that was more than enough for me. This album was well-represented on there. The hits on this album are of course great, but the rest does nothing for me. I wouldn't use ANY of them for CSI theme songs.
who's next average album? The who.
6/10 I expected to like this more than I did. The opener and closer are stone-cold classics and lift it from a 4 to a 6. But everything in the middle just doesn’t really connect with me. I like individual bits of quite a lot, but I don’t think that all of the component parts actually gel together into a completely satisfactory whole except for on Baba and Won’t Get Fooled. If they did a whole album that used those as a starting point and went from there, they could have made something very special. Side note - Roger Daltrey just seems like a bit of a try-hard in places. Overall, it’s not bad, but I don’t think I’ll go back to many more tracks than the two aforementioned ones. I just think there were quite a few bands doing the more straight-forward rock stuff a lot better than this. Baba O’Riley - Banger. I’ve always thought the folky fiddle bit at the end is a bit weird though. Bargain - Decent bluesy rock song that lost me a bit in the softer parts and was too long. Love Ain’t For Keeping - Liked this one. Had a good groove and didn’t outstay its welcome. My Wife - This just wasn’t very interesting. The Song Is Over - I wish it had been over sooner. Somehow seems to meander along despite Keith Moon trying his best to inject a bit of drive. Thought it was finishing and it was only half way through. Getting In Tune - Paul McCartney seemingly took the best bits of this wrote ‘Live and Let Die’. It wasn’t bad and had a decent groove in places, but as a whole it just didn’t really do much for me. Going Mobile - Liked some of the Instrumental parts, but didn’t grip me as a song. Behind Blue Eyes - Again, a decent enough rock song, but not a keeper for me. Won’t Get Fooled Again - Another Banger. Didn’t feel as long as some of the much shorter ones because it was actually interesting and all of the transitions and sections were much more coherent.
Classic
Obvious classic, much holds up for me, some does not.
7/10 Highlights: Won't Get Fooled Again Baba O'Riley My Wife Getting in Tune
The best of the albums by this band that I’ve had to listen to. Beautifully produced and so of a time. Atmospheric too.
"And, like, one and one don't make two, one and one make one." Words of wisdom from the Who.
The Who is one of those groups that I've always been aware of but never listened to. Let's see what all the fuss is about First track seems to be their most famous and...it's ok! I was expecting to love it, maybe more listens will do the trick, but this left me kind of underwhelmed. Love the ending though. This is the most dad rock I've ever heard hahaha Again, this second track's cool, I'm just not impressed. Maybe the fame these guys have game me some unfair expectations, but yeah. My favourite parts of both songs have been their endings. "The Song is Over" is the first track i like all the way through, even if the beginning and other parts with different vocals the best. I don't know enough about this band to know who's who, but the vocals have been a part of why I couldn't like the previous songs. I prefer the vocals here, even in the parts where the same guy from the other tracks is singing. Getting in Tune was good too! I don't know if I'm just not in the mood for this, or if I'm just being a hater for no reason, but man this is just not hitting. It's crazy, cause I feel like Going Mobile should leave more of an impact, but as is it's doing nothing for me (like most of the album). I had no idea that the "No one knows what it's like" song was from here what the hell. Oh ok. Sure, it's in that group of songs that I have a difficult time taking seriously because of its existence as a meme, but it is good! Won't Get Fooled Again is good, but at the 4 minute mark it has already overstayed its welcome, and there are 4 more minutes to go so... Yeah, after the first few tracks I was just waiting for this to be over... Having said that, the second half is much better than the first! So, I am a bit surprised at the reception that this album seems to have had, considering what I just heard. It's not bad. At all. It's just not exciting. Maybe if this was the first rock album I ever heard I'd like it better. But the thing is that many better rock albums had been released in 1971. So I can't even use the "good for its time" excuse. Yeah, don't know what else to say. I'm listening to the first track again and I do like it better. But overall the album just doesn't make mee feel much. Yeah. Not for me I guess. Bye
Some great songs, the rest hasn’t stood the test of time
Much better than that terrible concept album
This album has my all time favourite Who track, “I won’t get fooled again’. This is a lovely album that reflects its times. Baba O’Riley and behind blue eyes would be familiar to most, and for a good reason. To me this was the scream at the Hippie movement for getting the world’s hope up and failing without a whimper. Don’t get fooled again-you look after you is what this one says to me
Very okay. Extremely okay. The okayest album I’ve heard this week. 3/5
AND NOWWWWWWWW FOR YOUR CHICAGO BULLS… Baba O’Riley is as iconic as they come, but the rest of Who’s Next is that of a good album. The aforementioned Baba O’Riley combines with Won’t Get Fooled Again to create two of the finest bookends an album can have, with Behind Blue Eyes and Song Is Over presenting great value, but the rest of the album pales in comparison to these four songs. Rock, and all its constituencies, is clearly home for me, I gravitate towards this more than anything else. The Who? Delightful, Three Stars.
I liked it. The version of it I listened to was way too long though.
Not a fan of The Who, but this one's ok
3.75
Probably very important to what i call classic rock. Just a little stale and hard to focus on!
Starts off so strong and falls off so hard after that at first I thought this was included only for Baba O’riley. Then we got to the last 3 song run and all 3 of those were fantastic. Tough cause the middle is so meh. Strong 3/5, but could’ve been the strongest EP of all time if it were just those 4 tracks
trwa 2,5 godziny i nie przebrnęłam przez całość... całkiem przyjemne ale dla mnie nie do słuchania na co dzień
Its good, but it never really goes beyond its introduction. Which is kinda sad.
rly weird to think about, or try to talk about, because in many ways this doesnt feel like an album to me at all, and it kinda isnt! its the gutted remains of a far more ambitious project. the actual material is mostly fine...ive never liked the two famous tracks that close it out but everything else ranges from moderately pleasurable to baba o riley, one of the overplayed radio staples ive never felt like ive heard Enough Times. in general i think this is prob the closest that the who came to bridging their ambitious but somewhat sterile studio material with the big raw power they could manage live, and it makes sense as a totemic inflection point in that way. but on the other hand idk, this doesnt hang together v well for me and never rly has, because albums are more to me than just song quality. like i dont like tommy, but i dont think it would be rly improved if u gutted the concept and just pared it down to its most agreeable songs...it kinda has to be what it Is, and i think this is sorta the same way. i might not have loved lighthouse, but its a shame this exists instead of it, yaknow
- moody, unterhaltend und relativ fix durch, ganz coole Platte 3-4/5 aber eher 3/5
This album is surprisingly mid. With Baba O'Riley as the opening track, I assumed this album would be something legendary. Instead, this album is just okay. Best Songs: Baba O'Riley, Behind Blue Eyes, Won't Get Fooled Again Worst Songs: The Song Is Over
Way too much of an decent thing
Would have been 3.5, perhaps even 4. If it didn’t take over 2.5hrs…
ouf.
I like this album but I don't love it. There are some real bangers at least a couple have soured for me, especially "Bargain" after having been in those car commercials forever. Also why is it "Baba O'Riley" and not "Teenage Wasteland?"
Started off strong and then got less and less noteworthy over time
Opening song was epic. After that there wasn’t much I liked. Getting in Tune was a hard listen. Also the singer often does something, that as someone born in ‘98, I can only describe as a Jack Black yell. It’s not what I’m really looking for in music.
Some classics on here….a bit too long though
That's a lot of Who, but they are who they are so it gets 3
Good album. I enjoyed listening to it
For a brief while in the late 90s, I played music with a dude who saw The Who as the greatest band ever. I've heard a lot of bands held up as the greatest, The Beatles, The Stones, Sabbath, Zep are common ones. I'd never heard of anyone who thought The Who was the greatest until that point. I can buy the arguments for any of the more commonly named as the greatest, but I don't get the hype for The Who. They're fine as they go. They have some definite bangers, but overall their music is pedestrian and wears on me at album length. This albums inclusion in the 1001 for me is an indicator of the age of the folks who participated in the polls that led to the lists creation. Put simply, this album is terrible. It's boring and predictable and I'm no fan of the sound.
Great band, great album. Nothing really stood out to me, but they definitely have a unique sound.
Compared to all the Who albums I’ve listened to, this one seems to be the one where they’ve actually got their shit together. Quite enjoyed it, and not just for the flagship singles.
Obviously, bookended by bangers. But man the middle is pretty mushy. I kind of forgot about how many squishy mid-tempo ballads there are here. Meh!
The first two and the last two are doing a lot of heavy lifting for all those 5 scores. The Who are the ultimate 'just get a Greatest Hits' band for me. Won't Get Fooled Again is irresistible but it is definitely the grand finale at the centrist Dad disco.
Fantastic bookend tunes
I mean… it’s the Who… unbelievable songwriting, commanding vocals, et all. Keith Moon absolutely wails on the drums (which I love).
Better than the last Who album (wasn't hard). Still don't really get them though. I don't think Daltrey can even sing very well and hate most of the lyrics
Sticking to my rule of only listening to the original format songs is proving a wise move with these meandering 70s reissues. 9 songs. I can do that, even if the album is largely a mediocre borefest, which this is. Quite liked the synths and a few slower tracks (Behind blue eyes is one of my fave Who songs), but I’m concluding that I just don’t like The Who after the single “My Generation”. That’s said, it’s better than a lot of the tripe they released so it scrapes a 3 stars, but I will never play this again as it’s just too self indulgent and dull like much of their “prime era” back catalogue
Obviously a good album. But it is just so long with all the different versions of the songs.
Iconic album cover. Easy to listen to (Psychedelic/Hard) Rock album. Most well known and my favourite song in this album ist "Behind Blue Eyes".
Instrumentals are good, vocals and lyrics are quite beautiful. Baba O’Reilly is my favorite song by The Who, and Bargain is an excellent follow up track. Ending with Behind Blue Eyes and Won’t Get Fooled Again leaves you haunted.
I know a few songs off this album, it does feel awfully lot of an experimental song. Who's Next is a perfect storm of power, innovation, and heart. It's The Who at their most mature, bold, and emotionally complex—a record that both defined and defied its era. It's not just a classic—it's essential.
Starts off strong and maintains a degree of enjoyment throughout
it sounds like the Who selling out
A lot of classic tracks here. It's a perfectly good album. But I guess I'm just not that into the Who.
3.5
It’s great for the three classics contained on it but everything else is very forgettable/filler. It’s carried hard by its 3 hits to a 7/10
marromeno
I liked this album more than "Tommy." Unlike the last rock opera, these songs felt complete with versus and choruses and hooks. They each had something that grabbed me. "Baba O'Riley" is an undeniable classic, and a strong start to the album, set the tone moving through the rest for me.
Great band. Great vocals. Good album.
I don't know.
This was fine. Well recorded. Couple classic songs but nothing that special in my mind, or at least I didn't personally get much out of this album.
Ei nyt ihan meikäläisen cup of tea mutta ihan jees. En kuuntelisi uudelleen, ainakaan tätä levyä. Baba O’Riley oli hyvä biisi ja Behind blue eyes.
"Baba O'Reilly" is a great song. A classic for a reason. And of course "Behind Blue Eyes, and "Won't Get Fooled Again" have stood the test of time. They're not for me, but they are known. I was hoping that the deep cuts would bring me something hidden and fun, but they are mostly forgettable.
3 great ones
For a band that takes up so much space in music history, they have surprisingly few memorable songs.
Who's Next...is exactly what I was looking forward to while listening to this grossly overrated album. I have never been a Who guy, nothing about their music ever really hit me or seemed to warrant the high esteem they are placed in alongside other genuinely legendary rock bands of their time. This is not to say that I don't think that as individuals they are truly gifted musicians and that on paper they have an incredible line up of talent, however to me they do not equal the sum of their parts. This album is a perfect example of this, while certainly containing a few great songs (yes two that are iconic), I fail to hear what is so special about the body of work as a whole. What am I missing here?? Understanding the track list was made up of salvaged songs from the abandoned Lifehouse project that was meant to be a rock opera follow up to Tommy, the songs don't flow well together and feel like a mashup of scattered ideas. Additionally the production is uninspiring with echoed vocals from Daltrey. 🎧 Classic Track: Baba O’Riley 🎧 Deep Cut Gem: Getting In Tune 🚫 Toss Away: The Song Is Over 🖼️ Album Cover: The boys pissing on it says all you need to know! Not a bad album overall, however nowhere near top tier. Click the thumbs up icon below if you enjoyed my take on the album :)
Baba o Riley starts the album off incredibly strongly, and for a while after that it feels like it fails to deliver. Not sure if this is because the opener is so strong or the album is weak. By the time you're finished, it feels like a good album again though. 6/10
3 - these guys are too inconsistent to get a biopic I guess. Most of it was mostly alright with three pretty standout exceptions. Also didn’t know behind blue eyes originated from the who
It's pretty good but a bit basic. It's not as energetic or riff-driven as hard rock tends to be, but despite that being the main reason I like the genre in the first place, Who's Next is never boring. It's just doesn't do anything unique or that exciting. 7/10
Honestly was a little disappointed at first, I thought I would like this album more. Don't get me wrong, it was still good, but I was expecting to be a big fan and I just wasn't. I'm not even sure what it was about it. My favourites were probably the slower songs from around the middle of the album.
good, first half is a lot more interesting to me than the back half
I like The Who, I don't LOVE The Who
Das erste und vorletzte Lied ist sehr gut, der Rest ist leider nichts Besonderes
I get it. Not bad. Would probably listen to again.
3.11.
Some good songs here but as a whole the album is pretty "meh".
Good album. First song is an obvious banger
There's some great songs on this album, but honestly also some forgettable ones. Personally, I love The Who and they have some great tracks/singles. But the album as a whole I think only deserves a 3
Classic folk sound with phenomenal lyrics
Considerably better than Tommy, but still, there are really only 3 good songs here
Good album
Though a hugely influencial album with great song, it doesnt mean that much to me as an album
Very strong start with Baba O’Riley. Behind Blue Eyes. Otherwise quite unremarkable.
Baba O'Riley is really great. Won't get fooled again is pretty good. The rest of the tracks are very mid. Poor vocals. 3/5
It’s good. Can’t say it surprised me or anything. Like Baba is the best track. Was hoping another track was going to grab me.
Ok fine by not nearly as good as I expected it to be
didnt get into this album. at first the drums and the guitar work were mind blowing, but it quickly became tiring to listen to. the songwriting felt repetitive. it's passable
Some really great tracks, but others range from okay to just good. I can see why it's a classic, though. What rocks really rocks. Standouts: Baba O'Riley, Getting in Tune, Won't Get Fooled Again
The Who have always been a band to me that aren't greater than the sum of its parts. While I respect every member as musicians, especially Keith Moon whose style I love, the music of the group never really does it for me. I knew the main hits and was a fan of Behind Blue Eyes and Won't Get Fooled Again. Love Ain't For Keeping was a new track for me, I loved the sound of it and Entwistle's performance. The rest of the track list just isnt very interesting to me and I've never been a big fan of Baba O'Riley. Decent album but not music I listen to very often.
6/10 Top 3: Baby O'Riley Getting in Tune Won't Get Fooled Again
3.5
Baba is overrated. Middle of album is boring. Last two songs saved rating.
I think I’ve heard it a time or two not super into the who 🤷♂️ but it was pretty good
Baba O' Riley and Won't Get Fooled Again the standouts here, rest of the tracks all fine.
I thought I liked The Who more. But now, after having listened to what is likely their best album, I think I’m changing my tune. It may be an unpopular opinion, but I am not a fan of Keith Moon’s drumming style. He completely lacked any subtlety, and instead of just hanging back and playing in the pocket, the listener gets treated to what seems like one long drum fill (exaggerated of course). I still think some of the songs are great, but I now know that this is a band I prefer in smaller doses. John Entwistle carried this band (maybe another unpopular opinion).
I'm not really into The Who, but Who's Next delivers what I want when I am; play the damn hits. The start and end of this album are top stuff, Behind Blue Eyes is among their best songs and one of my favourites of any band really, the middle is mostly filler but with a decent enough sound to not hate it. If the big hits are 4/5s and the fillers are 2/5s, this gets a solid high 3.
Auch Overall nicht das tollste besteht für mich nur aus paar einzelnen Songs
Classic.
I don’t like The Who. This doesn’t change it. It’s not ground breaking. All the songs sound the same. It’s average at best.
Solid & sonically consistent. Pretty hard for 1971. The novelty doesn’t land for me though because of how influential the who are. I dont love Daltrey’s voice, which knocks it down a peg.
Ok
New some of the songs, but didnt know who they were from.
I like songs by the Who. Not bad, but didn’t really inspire me overall.
Only listened to it once, a couple of good tracks but mostly felt relatively forgettable for me. Fred durst did it better 😂
This is a classic album. I’m not even a huge Who fan, but this is pretty great.
starts and ends with a couple of classics, and a few decent one in the middle there too, but it didnt blow my socks off like i was expecting. might be letting my expectations taint what is really a good album here though...
Who? The Who.
Automatic 3 for Baba. Won't Get Fooled Again is always welcome; it's giving Tommy (I saw the musical this past summer—w i l d stuff). Besides that, I liked The Song is Over.
Favorite Songs Baba O'Reliy Bargain My Wife Getting Mobile Behind Blue Eyes This album is good. This genre is not my thing so it's something I'm not really a fan of but it was surprisingly enjoyable throughout 3.5
Amazing hits on this like Baba O'Reilly and behind blue eyes, but some of the non hit tracks don't stand out very much and blend into some standard, but good, rock. The hits elevate it enough but I am not huge on the who
Just a few hits and filler. I really don't get why this band is so overrated. Quadrophenia is better than Tommy and all there othe records are just ok
It is the Who. Kind of what you would expect from a traditional rock band. Of all the classic rock artists, the who are probably the most tolerable as they have some variation in their music. Not a 4 though
I can see why this is considered their best album. High 3, maybe a 4 if I listened a few more times
Good music, not mind blowing tho.
Another classic rock album that I sat through wondering what the appeal is overall. I think maybe 2 songs I really liked, and everything else was just fine.
Who doesn't like the Who?
Nice, pleasant to listen to, but not particularly exciting.
3.5. Solid album
Always enjoy getting a new Who record, but I think it turns out I prefer their early stuff. How does this have a cheesy 80s vibe when it came out in the 70s?
Few Solid songs, liked the beginning few. Good drum work, #myboykeithmoon
Too long, but pretty good.
Who's Next is the fifth studio album by the Who, originally released in 1971. It's very interesting to look at the Who's sound progression over the years. They began as this proto-punk mod garage group, then dabbled in psychedelia a bit, and by this time, Americana and singer/songwriter was dominating the charts. They tried to adapt some of that sound onto this record, with stripped-back production and lots of acoustic guitar. They do a good job at keeping that hard-rock identity they had become known for. This may be their most iconic album, with most of their hits. I think John Entwistle really shines on here. His bass lines are heavy and quite complex. This was pretty good, though I do prefer the Who's live sound around this time like Live at Leeds.
The Who are fantastic and have some really incredible songs. That being said, there really never has been or at least one that I can recall, a Who album that was great album to listen to front to back. Same feelings here still. 3 maybe 3.5 but staying at 3.
When I saw the recommendation for the fifth album by yet another storied British rock band, I braced myself; mid-career albums often lack the fire of earlier releases. With Who's Next, I needn't have worried. This album features two if not three of The Who’s best-ever songs. Who's Next showcases The Who at the pinnacle of their creative powers, with each member shining. Listening to Keith Moon is an utter joy; his frenetic drumming injects explosive energy into every track. His innovative blend of power and nuance is evident on "Baba O'Riley" and "Won't Get Fooled Again," where his unpredictable style becomes integral to the album's dynamic shifts. Roger Daltrey's powerful, emotive vocals define the record. His performance displays his remarkable range and ability to convey deep emotion. The iconic scream in "Won't Get Fooled Again" is one of rock’s most unforgettable moments. Pete Townshend, the driving force behind Who's Next, wrote most of the songs and themes. His groundbreaking use of electric guitar and ARP synthesizers crafts a rich sonic landscape. John Entwistle’s intricate bass work adds complexity and drive, enhancing tracks like "My Wife" and contributing to the album’s intensity. While it's difficult to criticize such a seminal album, the middle tracks feel a bit homogenized, blending into a sound that might not captivate casual listeners. It is not badly delivered, but these tracks lack the woah factor of the band's key moments. Yet, with an album that opens with "Baba O'Riley" and closes with "Won't Get Fooled Again," all other tracks could sound like smashed bottles, and it would still be better than a lot of other selections. . Did/Do I own this release? No. Does this release belong on the list? The Who belong on this list, and this is the album that made them go supernova. Would this release make my personal list? I feel I don't have enough of a sentimental attachment beyond "Baba O'Riley," "Won't Get Fooled Again," and "Behind Blue Eyes." Will I be listening to it again? Definitely to those three tracks.
y a des bangers mais sinon mouaif
The more I listen to The Who - I realize that I do like that but I probably won't put them ahead of a 3 stars. Even this album with Baby O'Riley, Behind Blue Eyes, and Won't Get Fooled Again... the other songs I find are just alright. I like The Who's hits, but other than that I can really take them or leave them. I think a part of my enjoyment comes from learning a lot about them in high school back in my guitar playing days and focusing on Keith Moon's drumming.
This album is very similar in my mind ratings-wise to the killers album. A couple absolute bangers and then a bunch of largely forgettable songs. It’s slightly more balanced in having the songs at the beginning and end, but I was actually disappointed in won’t get fooled again. I guess I’ve only ever heard the CSI Miami version, but the rest of the song isn’t as hype as the snippet. I was pleasantly surprised by Baba O Reilly though. Just assumed it was called Teenage Wasteland. One of the best songs on the list so far though. High 3/low 4 based on my past ratings
The tracks that are still played on the rock stations SLAP. The others are fine I guess
OK, a couple of familiar tunes, but some tunes lacking usual pace of The Who, a bit of a background type album
I would say another classic 70es rock album. Or maybe these albums defined what we perceive as „classic 70es“? Favorite songs: My wife Going mobile Behind Blue Eyes
Oh wait, Baba O’Riley is THAT song??? Who, I did not recognize your game. Too bad nothing really hits after that. The Wife is ok tho. Song is Over is chill. Alright I’m hating, Getting in Tune is cool too. That whole last 1/3 of the album kinda go crazy.
1. baba - 3.5 2. bargain - 2.5 3. love - 2 4. uuife - 1 5. over - 1.5 6. tune - 1 7. mobile -1 8. blue - 2.5 9. fooled - 3.5 10. baby - 1.5 11. tune 2 - 1 12. pure - 1 13. keeping - 1 14. eyez - 3 15. fooled again - 3 1. love - 1.5 2. pure - 1 3. bluez - 1 4. time - 1 5. eyez - 2.5 6. myzelf - 1.5 7. anything - 1.5 8. tune - 1 9. bargain - 1.5 10. uuater - 1 11. generation - 0 12. runner - 0 13. naked - 1 14. fooled again - 3.5
ok
Bookended by a couple of good tracks... Ambivalent about the rest
Pretty mid
it's fun how I can see how something has so much influence on everything that came after it and still think it's fucking boring
Opens and closes with two actual bangers. Solid album, high threes.
Great album by a great band.
Love "Going Mobile"
69 albums in and I have now gotten my third The Who album. The gods are not smiling down on me this year when I have yet to get one Beatles album - yet The Who are being shoved at me on a seemingly regular basis. What kind of sorcery do thy gods play with me? Anyway - ‘Who’s Next’ is The Who’s follow up to the massively successful ’Tommy’. Most tracks here were for the ‘Lighthouse’ rock opera project that went ultimately rejected. Resulting in an album that is simultaneously more ambitious than its predecessor from a musical perspective, yet less ambitious from a conceptual point of view. Some tracks are absolutely legendary; the masterful, hard hitting ‘Baba O’Riley’, with its unforgettable use of synthesisers. The powerful ‘Behind Blue Eyes, which has been covered to death for good reason. And the rock ‘n’ roll classic ‘Won’t Get Fooled Again’, which is a little too long for its own good; but it is overall enjoyable. The problem is that the other six tracks sandwiched between the mentioned tracks above are quite… bland? Which ultimately highlights my problem with most of The Who’s catalogue. You’ll always get a handful of great songs per album, but the majority of it will be largely forgettable. Their debut gets away with it for being fun, and ‘Tommy’ gets away with it for its ambitious concept. ‘Who’s Next’, while it sees the band slightly expand their musical ingredients, sees them merely blend in with their peers rather than stand out this time around. It’s an okay album. It probably didn’t need to be included in the 1001 albums list, to be honest; as it is one of The Who’s weaker efforts in my opinion. It’s enjoyable, with a few standouts; but that’s it. 3/5
Overall good, good cohesion but a lot of the songs do kinda sound similar. 1. Behind Blue Eyes 2. Won’t get fooled again 3. Going mobile 3.25/5
first who album, decent intro but it all blends together into 1 big song. favs are going mobile and the song is over. 3/5
I really like most of the songs, good solid album.
Ok
Damn it haha ok there is wayy too much old rock on this list. The app linked me to the deluxe edition. Not a chance. This album came after Deep Purple In Rock. Haha I don't know why The Who puts me in a weird mood. They always just feel like the last straw. It's not bad it's just whatever. Idk
we start strong with the only The Who song i know, and fade into shockingly indistinguishable dad rock. 2.5
I think I like this less than I thought I did. Baba O'Riley and Behind Blue Eyes still good but there's a lot of kinda boring stuff in here too, and it doesn't feel as cohesive as I wanted
Only 9 songs and at lesst 3 are classics
Good but not something I’d choose to listen to.
Decent -1 for nonce tho
Hmm, I like the who but I reckon this is kinda shit, like iconic songs aside. It's majority kinda eh
Singles are great. Rest of tracks are meh
Only a personal opinion, I love Baba O'Reilly and Won't Get Fooled Again, the rest's a bit meh.
Very single heavy but those singles are amazing. Some good album tracks as well.
Why would you make an album with every song four times
I like the classics good enough
Dad rock. Not bad but I was ready for it to end
It's good, it's a classic of course. Lots of mid-level bangers. But nothing mind blowing to me. The Who just doesn't hit like a Zeppelin album does for me.
Some good singles and a lot of songs that are also there.
Pas écouté en entier, les tubes sont très cools mais ambiance un peu lourde.
It has three of the most iconic rock songs ever recorded in history and in The Who's discography, but the rest of the album lacks that same energy. I'm a bit disappointed.
I’m just going to have to accept that The Who are just a bit meh. I’ve tried really hard but I just don’t get why they are so revered. This is the best I’ve heard though. So? Exactly! 3.0
Some very strong stuff mixed with some other ok stuff. Not the biggest fan of the who overall, good album though. Will I listen to again: 5%
Not mad at this
I don't care that this is a classic or whatever, aside from the two biggest hits on this album the rest is average and forgettable.
The hits were grest hut the rest of the albun dudbt feel that special to me.
Good album!
Honestly u enjoyed this album, had. Nice vibe to it
strange mix of refreshing and boring
album cover to get me interested. tick great opening to the first track. tick Enough to make me need to hear it again? Its ok, but a bit ..... dated?
Pretty alright. One great song and a bunch of good ones.
Another (almost) rock opera from the Who. It's shorter (as the project was aborted) but apart from some nice highlights (synthesizer in the first track, the classic Behind Blue Eyes) it sounds a bit too much as (boring) classic rock.
I’ve had a soft spot for The Who over the past month as they’ve recently become my wife’s favourite band and we’ve been listening to them a lot. Tommy and Who Are You have been on high rotation but not so much of Who’s Next. It was nice to add these songs to our repertoire. Baba O’Riley is one of the all-time greats. I enjoyed Going Mobile, that was a good new discovery. Never been a huge fan of Behind Blue Eyes, I’ve always thought various cover versions from across the years have been superior.
Kind of a top heavy album. The notable songs are great, but the others kind of fall flat. 3.5/5 Might listen again
Didnt listen to any of the deluxe tracks but this would’ve been an epic album in the 70’s. 3.5
Two of their very best bookending some more forgettable tracks.
Tvö mjög góð lög, restin er frekar sjarmalaus.
Certainly a classic album and I think the best form of eye operatic style The Who had adopted.
Baba O'Riley and Won't Get Fooled Again are the highlights.
I so badly wanted to like this but I felt nothing
it was fine.
I know it's a legendary album but it didn't land for me personally. I did like going "oh, this is THAT song" though.
I'm really torn on this one. On the one hand there are some classics that really stand out. The opening bars are superb and the musicianship throughout is of the highest possible level. But on the other hand I found Getting in Tune had some of the worst lyrics I'd ever heard. I didn't care for Mr Daltreys voice a whole lot and it all seemed a big 'Jeremy Clarkson era Top Gear'. I'm really not going to revisit this and it hasn't sparked an interest in the who so for the quality of the musicianship I'll give it a three.
Sure is an album from 1971.
Nicht schlecht - The Who sind für mich besser als Beatles, Stones etc. aus der Ära. Grösste Überraschung: Behind Blue Eyes ist kein Original von Limp Bizkit! Wer hätte das gewusst/gedacht ..
Surprised at how many of the songs sound similar to their hits.
I just listened to this album about a year ago. I don’t feel the need to listen to it again.
Amazing opening and closing tracks sandwiching some more middle of the road songs. I expected this album to be higher but it was still a good listen. 6/10 (3/5)
Not as bad as I thought, considering I haven't enjoyed The Who in the past, and when I've heard the singles off of this album in other playlists, I've always found them rather boring. "Baba O'Reilly" was actually pretty cool, as well as "The Song is Over." "Bargain" is interesting lyrically with some chill production elements, but it's otherwise really repetitive and a bit boring. "My Wife" is kinda lame. The famous "Behind Blue Eyes" is an alright song. "Won't Be Fooled Again" is cool, but it shouldn't be 8 and a half minutes long!
Drums. Songs are a bit long for me but all works. 6.5/10 for enjoyement.
What I wish for from more rock albums of its time. Ambitious and focused, some generational singles to come out of this one. The British had rockestra down, I can point to this and all of ELO’s greatest hits as evidence
The singles are long dead and have only stopped bleeding because the last of their blood was drained by classic rock radio sometime around 2001. The rest of the album is nothing remarkable, even sounding like rehashes of other songs on the album at times.
Good old classic rock with some synths, what's there not to like?
Geggjuð!! þarf að skoða oftar, mörg klassísk lög
All of The Who’s music tends to blend together for me. It’s easy listening though!
If you graphed the quality of this album, it would be a perfect inverse bell-curve. Starts and ends with absolute banger tracks, the ones just next to them are pretty solid too, then the rest in the middle is just alright. Having 'Baba O'Riley' and 'Fooled...' on a single album should warrant a solid rating alone really, they're just too good. At least the album isn't very long but the mddle section still drags out for me, i'm just waiting for that closer to come as soon as the opener is done.
It's fine. Not really my cup of tea, but not the most annoying thing ever.
Some good songs on here but rushed through it 5/10
Good
Very bluesy, good but not my vibe
The Who just doesn't do it for me. I've never gotten on with their sound even though I love rock. Guess I'm just not a mod.
A couple of bangers but mostly meh. Best song: behind blue eyes ofc
No surprises. It's The Who sounding like The Who.
Really enjoyed the second half. Wish I could give it a 3.5.
what an enjoyable first song and then they beatles'd all over the place for the rest of it.
Baba O’Reilly was like oh yeah I know this one. This is such dad rock man but pretty good
Solid, consistent, enjoyable.
2hr 33 is a joke.
Back in the saddle for some classic Who, doesn't blow me away but fairly enjoyable
Tänäänkin on hyvä päivä laittaa Baba O’Riley soimaan ja tanssia ympäri kämppää bassetin kanssa.
Not the best. Baba O’Reilly and the other song are obviously cool but the rest of the album didn’t do much for me. The only real who album I like is the Tommy album so
I liked this one way better than the who sell out!
I knew some hits on this already which I liked. Most of the album I thought was a bit of a let-down though. Maybe I was expecting more from its reputation, but there was plenty of 'meh' in here for me.
I really like The Who, but I don't personally think this is their best album, besides Behind Blue Eyes.
This is a pretty good classic rock album and the source of a few songs that I was aware of, but wasn't aware of who sang them. All in all, pretty good stuff.
6/10
Best first song so far Rest of album very good
The only good who album
Three mega hits with a so-so rest makes for an OKish album. 3/5
I usually love when a band branches into new, more complex or experimental territory, but something about The Who post-My Generation just doesn't do it for me. Nothing wrong with these songs, but they're not to my taste. Keith Moon is an absolute beast on the drums though, consistently the best part of the whole album.
This wasn't bad. I recognized a few of the songs as The Who, but there were a couple that I had heard that I didn't know The Who sang. It wasn't bad overall.
It’s an upgrade on ‘The Who Sells Out’ that’s for sure. Mind you, the bar is low on that comparison isn’t it! This, however, was actually pretty decent!
Teenage wasteland! Makes me think of that movie where Emile Hirsch dates a porn star. 3 stars for me
I was very into The Who when I was a teen, so I owned and listened to this album quite a bit. I grew away from them over the decades that followed, but this album is so strong and brings back great memories. So many superb tracks on this album.
Contains one of their best (Baba O Reilly), a lot of filler, and one of their worst (Behind Blue Eyes). The live tracks are funny, if only because you realise who the inspiration for David St Hubbins was. I'm glad I've unknowingly spent 20 years laughing at Brexit charisma vacuum Roger Daltrey.
Tale of two halves. Great opening tracks. 3 & 4 also pretty good. 5 - 8 much weaker, (Fred Durst has forever ruined Behind Blue Eyes it seems). Outgoing song was pretty good. Not sure why it's heralded as one of the greatest releases ever though. Nowhere near as good as other seminal rock hits of the early 70s.
Good overall album, with some timeless tracks. However, the deep tracks are easily lost and just don't hold my attention.
The organ synth sounds are classic. Decent studio recording, but not a favorite. I feel like most tracks could have used more dynamic range. Some tracks sound like they are slightly dampened like under a sheet. I find the vocals uninteresting, but I’ve heard this album so many times I’m probably just burnt out on it.
good album, good band
Besides the singles this is pretty boring. But the singles are good enough I will rate it high. B
Mittel, aber Keith Moon
Ein Muss, und dann noch aus dem legendären Jahr 1971. Das gibt Bestnoten. Vom Rock-Opa. Aber nicht von mir. Wobei es mir besser gefällt als das langweilige Tommy.
6.5/10
