Pretty good. Not something I'd normally listen to but some good rock tracks and a good vibe to it
Although not one of the greatest live albums ever! This is powerful and shows the band's energy.
Spotify was missing most of the tracks, but of the ones I listened to - really solid. I like his vocals, the guitar solos (especially the harmonies) were really beautiful. Nice driving pace, super tight. Probably helped by the fact that it was partially recorded in a studio. Sure, it's cheating. Sure, it's kind of long. But that's a pretty sick live album.
Not a huge fan of live albums
I'm not a big fan of live albums being on lists like this, however I'm glad I listened to this. I was dreading it but I ended up enjoying it quite a lot. High energy rock show. Fav songs: - Jailbreak - Still in Love with you - Cowboy Song - The boys are back in town
‘78 Marin County Fair sound. Boys are Back in Town.
This is the epitome of white boy rock. It's not bad, and for the record, I'm a "white boy", but it's not great. 3 stars
Great guitar interplay, no song outlives it's welcome. A LOT of early Iron Maiden in this, Dave Murray especially clearly influenced.
Forgettable live album.
3.5 I’ve never claimed to be much of a Thin Lizzy fan, but this album definitely made me more of one! I really thought all these guys had was Jailbreak and The Boys are Back in Town, but there was no shortage of great songs to be found here, with Emerald, Rosalie, Are You Ready, and my personal favorite, Southbound, all being highlights. I didn’t care as much for some of the later slower stuff like Dancing in the Moonlight and Still in Love With You, but I will say, as a whole, I really do think the songs are greatly enhanced by the band’s live performance - in most cases, I found them better than their studio versions. While I wouldn’t go as far as to call this one of the best live albums I’ve ever heard, it does have a great energy to it that makes me think these guys would have been a blast to see. Granted, there was apparently a lot of studio overdubbing work done on this, but that kind of thing happens with most live albums, so I don’t really fault them for that here, and I honestly, I think they did it more seamlessly than some other live albums I’ve heard (love The Mark, Tom, & Travis Show, but yeah…) I don’t think this is any kind of all-time great, but I do think this a fun live album and definitely has a place in a classic rock record collection.
It has a great sound. Not totally raw as they ,for example, edited some phasing to the drums solo at the end of ‘Sha-La-La’. The solo came out of nowhere and I really enjoyed it. ‘Still in Love With You’ hooked me in. What stands out are the two lead guitars harmonizing. But to be honest I don’t always like the sound of it. At first I also liked ‘Dancing In The Moonlight’ but it’s feels a bit generic towards the end of the song. I’m happy that I got to know the band but will probably not listen to the full album again. One takeaway for me is that a phaser sounds really good on cymbals.
9 hours. 9. Hours. No Nathanial, Oh no Nathanial, there must be more to life than listening to 9 consecutive hours of Thin Lizzy. Obviously I didn’t listen to it all, and to be fair, what I did listen to I enjoyed.
This was fun. If I had to listen to old rock I'd pick this over the sabbaths and deep purple and stuff. I moved to Ireland nearly a decade ago and Phil Lynott is a god here and I can see why. He is the Irish Hendrix. Plus the rhythm section slaps as well. The live album seems to do a good job of capturing their energy. My only complaint is that it didn't offer much variety and I found over an hour if this way too much. But if you are a fan then I'm sure you'd stuck this straight in your veins.
Kept thinking "this band sounds just like another band from that era". At first I was thinking of Tom Petty "don't do me like that", but turns out I was actually thinking of the songs JailBreak and The Boys are Back In town and didn't realize who sung them. So there... Thin Lizzy sounds just like the band Thin Lizzy. #HotTake
Fun
Honestly a lot of the songs were unmemorable. However, the guitar on this album was so incredible that I'm going to give it some bonus points. Even more impressive that this was recorded live. 3.5/5
70’s rock at its pinnacle.
It's fine, although nothing groundbreaking. Definitely too long. And weird that it's live but also not. Not bad enough for a 2 though.
boys are back in town
Thought i’d like it more than I did. “Boys” isnangreatbtunenofncourse
decent but drags on and doesn't stand out much, don't really see the point of including this on the list
Great guitar solos
I'd still rather have studio versions, but Phil Lynott is charming AF and they have the tunes.
good
Famous live album representing the essence out of two different live tours.
Fun live album Standout songs: Suicide Johnny the Fox Meets Jimmy the Weed Rosalie
Mid except for boys are back in town
Mmm Fav songs: southbond ×)
Is this one song or four? Live versions of all the best from this one hit wonder. Must say, I love their sound.
Liked it better than I expected, but then again didn't expect much. Good energy, but not a lot of variety to the music.
I was dreading my Monday morning rainy commute until I pulled up this power punch. I have always liked the hits and a few deeper tracks. I love the low rumble of the back line and the dueling guitar sound. I have a few new takeaways from this one, Massacre and Dancing in the moonlight. Loved the live versions of Cowboy Song/ Boys are Back. I will say I prefer the studio version of “Emerald”, one of the best guitar solos of all time IMO. Overall a great listen pretty much all the way through. 3.5/5
Outside of the hits I had never really listened to Thin Lizzy. On the controversial topic of whether this was truly a live recording, I would probably side with the producer. Unnatural crowd fades as well as moments of no noise at all during songs with space kinda support the fact those parts were studio overdubs. But it was still an enjoyable listen. And the twin guitar’ing really defines the band. More like…Somewhat live and somewhat dangerous but still rockin’.
This was definitely at times pretty fun, several tracks that rocked and were worth listening to, especially for a band that I had always thought (probably erroneously) was basically a one hit wonder. But not sure I needed this, and something tells me if I had a visual to pair with this audio I would have liked it less. The Spotify link initially took me to a four track version, inclusive of The Boys Are Back in Town… felt like that would have been sufficient for me.
Still on the fence if live albums should be allowed. The Irish joke was a bit of an eye roller but enjoyable rock album. RIP
I’m typically not a fan of live albums (says the guy who gave 5* to Nirvana Unplugged). Sure the hits are there, but I prefer the studio recordings. This one was pretty enjoyable and sounded good. I guess there’s some controversy surrounding the band overdubbing most of the album. Anyways, who cares? It’s an above average listen and I really enjoyed Massacre. 3.5/5
Seemed designed for the more hardcore fans. It was ok but i don't think I'd listen again.
I didn't like the start of this album. Not sure why this was considered a good enough live album to be included. There was a stretch of songs from Cowboy Song to Don't Believe a Word that were very strong, but I don't think it was enough for me to really want to put this album on again. I may check out other Thin Lizzy album releases out of curiosity, so that's not a bad thing.
I'm liking this. It's a solid live recording, and while I'm not a huge fan of this era of rock, I've grown to appreciate it so much more as the years have gone by. It's a tight band (with tight pants) and the live translation of their songs was great and the recording on the record is amazing. The drum solo panning and flanging on Sha-la-la!! I really enjoyed this one. 4/5 --- Rating meanings: since all of these records are master works and well regarded, my scale is going to adapt to how well I connected with a record. 1 being the least amount of connection and 5 being the most amount of connection.
*Live performance* Knew a good amount of these songs, but never knew what the band was. This is another one that sounds like my childhood. Fave: The Boys Are Back in Town 3.5
Pretty good but overly long. Some great solos in this, I especially liked Still In Love With You. Nothing jumped out enough to go more than three stars though.
Pretty good for a genre I usually don't like at all
i knew of thin lizzy's big hits. didn't know they were irish until i went to irish rock n' roll history museum (must-do if you're a music lover in dublin). and this live album was good. something i would put on in the background while cleaning my house.
Solid live-rock-album with the all their hits. I generally question the significanse of that kind of a live-album for this list. 2,5
Yeaaaah c'était fun mais j'écouterais plus les versions albums.
This one was better than I expected. Nice to pick an Irish band for St. Patrick's Day. I doubt I'll pick this one up much but it was a decent listen. Honestly though, I only made it 3/4 through this album. I'm sure I would have been a huge Thin Lizzy fan if I was in my teens or twenties in the 19070s.
While Thin Lizzy is an excellent hard rock band and one of their studio releases certainly belongs on this list, but I'm not sure another live double album does, particularly when it was created by cherry picking from so many dates and with so many overdubs. Having said that I did enjoy the live segue from the last chord from "Cowboy Song" becoming the first chord from "The Boys Are Back In Town". This album demonstrated that Thin Lizzy wrote and performed solid songs. I cannot help but wonder if Prince early in his career borrowed a ton of Phil Lynott's wardrobe look from this era. It would seem so.
These are their hits, so its nice, but why is this live album what one should listen to, it didnt stick out to me in any way.
Solid live performance.
Started off strong, captured the feeling of a live show quite well. Overstayed its welcome.
Not bad. Enjoyable guitar
Album Nr. 62 Nicht schlecht. Aber vom Hocker reißt mich das Album aber auch nicht.
"The Boys Are Back in Town", certified banger. What I didn't know is that the lead singer (Phil Lynott) is a black Irishman, the more you know. This album is a bit weird since it's a live double album. This is my first Thin Lizzy album on here, but the live album is basically just a compilation of their popular stuff at the time so it feels like it's kind of cheating to me. Allegedly there's also a dispute about how much of this is actually "live". I guess they were originally supposed to record an album this year but their producer was busy so they just decided to pull live recordings and slap a cover on that instead. The producer claims that 75% of the sound actually was overdubbed in the studio, but the manager says that's wrong and 75% of the sound is live and they only overdubbed some background vocals and things. If it's actually significantly dubbed, that makes it even a little more dicey for this list. Anyway, it's generally alright. It's definitely a hard rock album through and through, but there are enough solid songs. Obviously "The Boys Are Back in Town" is iconic, but "Jailbreak" is a great opener, "Dancing in the Moonlight" was really nice (I hadn't heard this one before), and "Cowboy Song" led into TBABIT nicely. The downside is that it's long (77 minutes) and there are a few stretches that feel like somewhat generic hard rock. They probably could have cut this thing after TBABIT and been just fine with it. Favorite song: The Boys Are Back in Town Other: Jailbreak, Dancing in the Moonlight, Still in Love with You, Cowboy Song 3/11/24
Thin Lizzy is another of those "good" basic bands that cover the entiire "core" of music, particularly within genre. In other words, Thin Lizzy is a hard rock, all in, put it out there 70's rock band. It doesn't take much research to realize that there were a LOT of bands like this, always has been, always will be. They are entertaining, "cool" and will have an overall generic appeal with a few hardcore fans. I suppose they also suffer from being around at a time when lots of amazing bands were around vying for air time. Nevertheless, they are solidly entertaining and good fun.
Wederom weer best oké voor oudewittemannenmuziek. Live optreden is opzich ook wel gezellig om naar te luisteren
Pretty good live album, however for some reason my spotify doesn't give me access to over half the songs. The ones I have access too were good though!
ten years ago, i would have loved this more. now it's okay, but not groundbreaking...
Pretty okay.
I quite liked this. Favourite song Still In Love With You
Live (but not really) And Dangrous(ly boring)
Fine guitar work
It's fine. I think it started out strong, then sort of got a bit boring in the middle. it picked up a bit at the end, but I was kind of over it at that point. It's not really my kind of music, so an hour and 20 minutes is a LONG time. A bit of a fun fact: Apparently Huey Lewis, who would later achieve fame as the guy with all the songs in the Back to the Future movie, was part of the backing band or something. He got a call out for playing harmonica. This is definitely not Huey Lewis and the News-style music. Anyway, 3 out of 5 seems about right.
Only listened to half. Kind of dig it
Thin Lizzy never really made my radar as far as bands to listen to, and I didn't hear much here to spark the kind of rabid fandom that I've seen around this band. It was fine for a '70s rocker.
Straight forward late 70s live rock. Nothing wrong with it, but not interesting to me. Includes big hit The Boys Are Back In Town.
kein Gedöns - ROCK
Clásico rock staple but not a huge fan
It's a four song live album, I'm not sure how this would be considered great but whatever. Typically live albums are never that great in the first place
Enjoyable albums. Simple & classic sound lacking some variety but they found their niche. Nothing really stood out for me too much they're good at what they do.
Some great moments here
Very generic 70s rock. Still fun to listen to though
Very interesting for a heavy rock album
It's aight. Pretty generic classic rock. Would rather just listen to their studio albums. Not even really a lot of band energy, or crowd energy. Energy ramps up closer to the end, nice drum solo on "Sha-La-La". If the whole album was like the last 3 tracks it'd be legendary!
Decent enough, but sometime it's a bit uninspired with really basic rock songs. I really do enjoy the lead singers voice though. I also think it starts off really strong and fall off big time around the 3/4 mark.. unfortunate, since if they just cut a few tracks it would've been a much better listen. 6/10
not on spotify
It’s okay, not a giant Thin Lizzy fan but the dual guitar lines are great. It’s good just not maybe the most subversive songwriting for me.
Could only listen to 4 songs. Would like to hear the rest.
There are only a few bands I can listen to an entire album and not get bored with it. Thin Lizzy is not one of those bands.
Only 4 of the songs would play. Very few reasons for a live album, but guitar solos are one of them. Still in Love with You has a pretty great solo.
Solid classic rock. Would sound good on a dive bar jukebox anywhere in the world.
7/10 i'm not the biggest fan of live albums purely because I feel as if yes, the performances are more lively but they don't really match up with my feelings towards the original recordings. this album was no exception. i also feel as if the songs performed weren't that interesting to me, like ok it's 70s rock? big whoop, do something cool with it. it sounds nice but it's just not that exciting.
Celtic rockabilly baby!
Didn’t grab me. Had high expectations from the wiki report. Not my taste I guess
Jail Break & Boys are Back in Town are bangers.
- The guitars are jammy but why does a live album need to be on this list again - Insanely fun to listen to tho - Great classic rock sound that's very guitar driven
- very good sound quality for a liv album - just some dudes rocking
Said before that I'm not keen on live albums. This was great though. I think more 'live' stuff should be produced like this was. Two weeks of studio improvements and polish. Helps that the band were seemingly at the top of their game.
Turn it up to 11 and enjoy!
Alright, but can't really pick any songs out of the mix
It’s a good album. It’s too hard for me at this time in my life but I appreciate it. My favorite song, which I absolutely love, is still in love with you.
Some good tracks. Don't love live albums.
Who knew the guy who wrote the boys are back in town had more than 1 song?
Live albums are shit, but this doesn't feel that live and shit just a bit of both. Too long, couldn't pay my full attention all the way through. Sick guitar harmonies, made me wanna pick up my guitar and play along with the juiciness.
This was fine. The crowd and the artists seemed to be enjoying themselves. As it started I expected an album of straight-up hair metal, a mode for which I wasn't in, but fortunately it balanced out with some bluesy, countryesque, even funky moments. None of the music was memorable for me—in one ear and out the other—but this was still a fun album!
They definitely closed the album on a high note. Fun drum solo on Sha-La-La. High energy, decent classic rock stuff in general. It didn't quite get to a 4 for me, but it was solid. 3.5.
In my opinion, Thin Lizzy had great hard rock and incredible live shows. I do not believe that this is the best live album of all time. Jailbreak is my favorite song of theirs. They are firing on all cylinders with this one! It is played and sounds different each time they play it from the original studio recording to every single live performance. Each one good, but different. I don't like that my favorite version is not the studio or the live one on this album though.
Catchy opener... Probably a 3/5 for me. Not bad but not blowing me away. A little corny in parts but some classic Hard Rock. Can't deny some of those riffs.
First of all, I hate a live record. Hate hate hate them. So we'll see how this goes. Ok, "Emerald" rips??????? And you can't really tell that it's live even so much? This album kind of lost momentum for me pretty quickly, to be honest. I will say I was prepared for the live aspect to be much worse and much more annoying than it actually was. The live aspect was fairly negligible. Thin Lizzy for me is just one of those bands that is INCREDIBLE when they are on, but more often than not it's just Fine and that's all. Looped back around to being a little dull for me at the end. "Baby Drives Me Crazy" is a whole long band introduction live album thing which is always boring as hell. However apparently Huey Lewis played harmonica on this live album only so that was a bizarre and interesting introduction to hear.
I can just imagine my pot smoking uncle being like "what? you've never heard live and dangerous by thin Lizzy? HOLD ON" Then slamming an 8track into the dashboard of his Buick lasabre. This album is really good but we are past it as a culture. Save it for the classic rock station. That being said I enjoyed having it on in the background.
eenrgetic, fun. not the best that i've heard, but probably due to not liking the songs that much
One of those albums that isn't hard work but isn't great either. I usually have a no live albums merit greatness award but I can understand why the odd one is put in - this was most definitely the best known Lizzy album when I was a kid.
Peter Frampton’s album was much better. But the song “Massacre” is a banger 🔥
A fantastic rock album front to back. The bassist is holding it DOWN on this one and the guitars are screaming. Standout tracks: Emerald, Massacre, The Boys Are Back In Town
Pretty good live album. Sounded like an amazing concert to be in attendance.
Solid music, but for me, nothing special.
It's always a bit odd having live albums pop up on this list, 'in the wild' I would only stick on a live album of a band I really liked, and even then it would have to be a pretty special performance. Thin Lizzy are cool enough but at an hour and a half, this was wearing thin towards the end.
Great live album, but still feel live albums should not be on the list, so 3 stars.
Apart from the live aspect in the context of this list: an entertaining album.
5.5/10 Surprisingly ok, though not that interesting. Highlights: Johnny the Fox The Boys are Back in Town
Not bad stadium rock, a bit generic: 3/5?
Good, hard rocking classic. I'm not a huge Thin Lizzy fan but this was a pretty good live album.
Sadly most of this album was missing from Spotify. It seemed pretty cool. The boys are back in town was the best track
Sounded dubbed. Probably not from one show. Mid
Very 70s, loud, with a few catchy ones
Pretty rocking blues rock, but when the guitars are front and center, they're all "excuse me, I will now demonstrate the NWOBM".
Definitely not an album I would have ever reached for on my own, but that's why ya gotta love this project. I am of course familiar with a few of Thin Lizzy's hits, "The Boys are Back In Town" is an undeniable banger, but never have been super interested in diving any deeper on them. But hey, this should at least be fun! I've always loved "Jailbreak" too ever since it was featured on the soundtrack for MLB 08: The Show, which I put way too many hours into as a kid. Rocks out fine enough here, not adding any Dead/Phish long 12 minute jamming sections or anything (dang, that would actually be kinda sick), but still fun to hear a live version of a song I know pretty well. Grooving through the next few as well, not anything really blowing my mind but it was good music to run to on my morning run. "Still in Love with You" is the first to make me stop in my tracks a bit, really nice tone & touch on the guitar here. Also, an aside, probably dumb of me but never realized they were an Irish band until I heard their accents in the between song banter. I think I just default to thinking any band is American unless they sound very obviously not. Very Amero-centric of me, I apologize. One thing this live album does give me is an appreciation for the front man Phil Lynott's vocals, very impressive, sounds kinda like Freddy Mercury at times. Why are they encouraging the crowd to clap along with the band, one of my biggest live music pet peeves, it always sounds awful and this is no exception, especially with the weird way the audience is mixed (going from non-existent to this weird separation from the rest of the instruments, guessing this is because of the way there were apparently a lot of overdubs, [which I don't hold against them unlike other reviewers, the greatest live album of all time Europe 72 has a lot of overdubs]). I think I would have a lot of fun with this album drinking beers with my buddies in the 70/80s, but sitting sober at my desk on Monday morning in the year 2023 it's not doing a ton for me. And an hour 20 is a bit much. But it's certainly not terrible. "Boys are Back in Town" sounds great here, I liked the transition from "Cowboy Song"
3.5
Very generic 70s hard rock. No reason to listen to this album over anything else of the genre.
First live album I have been tricked into listening to. Wasn't bad, guitar parts were pretty cool, and some of the songs in the beginning were pretty good I think. But I don't remember too much of it.
5/10 - Overall okay. There are some good songs but the Boys are Back in Town is definitely their most popular song and i do not really like it. I just think his voice is kinda annoying.
Kinda felt like a had heard the whole song 30 seconds into each song 5/10
Cool, but very repetitive. Kept thinking "Is this the boys are back in town?" Nope, just an extremely similar song.
Æ þetta var frekar boring því miður. Örugglega voða fínt ef maður nennir þessu endalausa gítar rúnki.
It was ok. Would probably have it on the background.
4 of 17 available to stream...so I had a look around and was able to give the entire thing a listen after the four that were available. It was worth it for being a live record and over an hour of listening time. I don't know if I could get into the image and all the other trappings but I appreciate loud, heavy music that has some hooks to it just as much as I love loud, heavy music that puts noise and anti-hooks front and center. Thin Lizzy obviously is the former and not the latter. I don't know where the record sits in their canon, but it's fun on its own.
Nice 80's rock album. The fact that it's a live recording makes it better. Fun listen.
This is a great live record, I will probably need to relisten. Thoughts: Pretty Decent Old White Man Rock Favorite song: Still In Love With You
Good classic rock album, but nothing to unique that makes it stand out.
Ok. Some good guitar on this. Odd that the one hit song is what it is - several others are better
Meh
Good album. Lots of energy.
Disjointed, not a proper live album, not a studio album either. But there are some good songs, good solos, overall a good listen. Massacre was my favorite ☘️☘️☘️
Nice to hear live versions of some of the studio stuff I loved: The boys are back in town, Jailbreak, Sha la la, Dancing in the moon light.
If only they left off the filler, it would have been a 4 star single LP. Favorite song: massacre.
was ok... but live is annoying af
A bop.
It was fine
Another live album, though this wasn't terrible. I'm feeling generous so I'll give this a 3 today.
I'm familiar with their hit "The Boys are Back in Town", but this is my first listen of a Thin Lizzy Album. A decent concert overall, but there are times the vocals are almost floating in front of the rest of the mix - it seems more noticeable in some songs than others. The fade in and out of some songs seems weird, but after reading notes the songs came from different concerts (as well as the discussion of overdubs) it makes sense. Notable songs in this one for me are Rosalie, Still in Love with you, and a young Huey Lewis (!) on Baby Drives Me Crazy, and The Boys are Back in Town. Sha-la-la had a fun drum solo that had a part that reminded me of Van Halen's Hot for Teacher.
Way less cheesy than I expected with pants like that. Rocked pretty hard.
Some fun riffs but I never liked how they just talk instead of sing sometimes
It’s very Thin Lizzy
Very good for a live album
A great live album but I think I would rather the standard songs more so it takes a hit for me.
Good musicianship but generally forgettable songs
Blind album and artist, only know the name. It's okay. Don't lime that the 1st album I heard of this artist was a live one, and it sounds like the band recording was maxed and put on top of the clapping and stuff...? Kind of bothers me compared to other live albums I heard.
Helt kiva bra bas
I can appreciate that this is an impressive live album, but I'd rather listen to recordings than a live album. Not a fan of the cheering.
I've always liked Phil and his swagger. This is a fairly standard live rock album though- most of the hits are on here.
Bruce Springsteen with sicker guitar and a slightly worse/iconic voice. After a few songs I thought 'this is a boys are back in town beat', lo and behold the song comes on later in the album and they wrote it. Crazy
Wow, lots of guitar solos. My son and I listened on an hour long car journey yesterday. It was a reasonably good experience. I can see these guys probably had a fair bit of influence on some more modern bands. Enjoyed the musicianship and crowd interaction. Took note to listen again to Massacre I think it was… there was a few really good tracks on here and I was glad of the mixture of styles and timings. But those guitar solos… one every 2 or 3 minutes perhaps? Easy on the solos!
Was not expecting to enjoy this, but surprisingly fun. Did not realize they basically invented having two lead guitarists, and you can really hear that come through in their live set here.
Better than I expected. Gary Moore's guitar playing was excellent. However a few songs did seem to start with similar intros and thought The Boys Are Back In Town was beginning about 3 times before it actually played. Enjoyable, will I revisit? Maybe. A low 3 for destroying my preconceptions of this band. Thank god there was no Whisky in the Jar (or Jarrow if you're that bloke from Metallica) or it would have been a lot lower
Boys are back in town! It was nice, pretty fun, but they can go back to their village now. Entertaining at moments, but ultimately quite a boring album.
What a pleasant surprise. I couldn’t listen to the entire album because Spotify had removed several of the tracks from the album, but I got a small taste.
Classic rock is classic. The fact that Huey Lewis played harmonica on this album blew me away. A fun listen.
Good ol' rock 'n' roll, really fun album, nothing too special. Still in Love with You and the transition from Cowboy Song to The Boys Are Back in Town were standout moments for me.
Pretty cool live album
Probably really good, but only 5 or so songs available in NA on Spotify.
Fairly generic rock album. Good for a live album nothing particularly special
Better than The Who and Queen. More straight hard rock. Gets boring after an hour, but a forty minute highlights cut would slap. These guys can play. Chugging drums, blazing lead, nice little double lead lines harmonizing guitars. Who and Queen probably better live. Solid late seventies live rock.
This is a decent live album, though I don't feel like the live recording sounds great. It's void of a lot of the energy that I feel is necessary for a live album to really hit. You don't feel any of the crowd energy/excitement and the production feels way too bass-focused, it just sounds super muddy to me. All of that being said, there are a number of solid songs on here and they perform them well. I saw somewhere that there was a remastered version of this somewhere but I'm assuming that's not what's on Apple Music because I feel like they should have addressed some of the production shortcomings (unless some of this was due to the mic setup that was used). I would really like to hear a remixed/remastered version of this one because I feel like that could add a full star to this album. Standout Tracks: Jailbreak, Rosalie/Cowgirl's Song, Dancing in the Moonlight (It's Caught Me in Its Spotlight), Cowboy Song, The Boys Are Back In Town, Suicide, The Rocker
Favourite Song: The Boys are Back in Town
Good live album, love how you can feel the energy
Day 5 (I think), and the first album we’ve gotten that I don’t own in one form or another. (Yes, I own a Meat Loaf album. I have hoarding issues.) Also the first one I’ve never listened to before, even though it seems like an album I should have and like. A lot critics and bands I like are Thin Lizzy fans. Out of the five or six albums we’ve been assigned here, one would guess that Meat Load would’ve been the album I’ve never heard (though truthfully I’d never listened to entire thing before). Some might even think the Pointer Sisters, but only those who were unaware of my soft spot for disco. I’ve listened to some album cuts from Thin Lizzy, but never gotten into them enough to make it through a full album. Which leads me to the album itself. I don’t have much to say. It didn’t really do it for me. I skipped through sections of songs just to get to the guitar solos. I liked the several hits I already knew. The band sounds good. I think it’s just that the songs weren’t catchy enough for me. And I just didn’t respond to the lead vocals with much feeling. I can see the appeal but I fell asleep before I got to the end. Maybe I’ll give it another try down the road.
I mean, sure. 2.5
Classic rock
Its good, but its not great. Maybe this album set a standard, but it sounds so much like all the other 70s rock, you know? Anyway, its got a few good tracks but it doesnt grab me for some reason. 3/5
Can't really say much about this. The songwriting is standard fare, but at least the performances were enticing.
Down-the-middle rock. I miss this.
we wpuld thank evrry body for coming especially if yoj xame teice lr three tkmes

Genuinely speaking, I find that live albums fall a bit flat. You don't have the benefit of precise mixing like on the album, and you don't have the energy that you'd get from actually being there in person. That holds true here, too. I do like Thin Lizzy and it was fun hearing a lot of their best songs in one place, but I'd rather be listening to a proper studio production, to be honest.
Very solid album. Great tight music for a live performance and perfect vocals.
It’s cock rock and live so of course they cock it up a bit more. It’s fine, whatever. They’re kinda lame as fuck though, like an Irish Kiss, kinda cool but I hate that I like bits of it. 3 stars I guess
No me guardé ningún tema, pero estuvo bueno escucharlo. Me hizo acordar al Queen rockero.
Pretty decent
y bueno qsy 7/10
Fun to listen to. Dancing in the moonlight 5/5
Totally decent, but no way essential. Enjoyable listen though.
C+ Jailbreak - 3 Emerald - 2 Southbound - 3 Rosalie / Cowgirl’s Song - 2 Dancing In the Moonlight (It’s Caught Me In Its Spotlight) - 4 Massacre - 4 Still In Love With You - 4 Johnny the Fox Meets Jimmy the Weed - 2 Cowboy Song - 3 The Boys Are Back In Town - 4 Don’t Believe a Word - 4 Warrior - 3 Are You Ready - 3 Suicide - 3 Sha-La-La - 2 Baby Drives Me Crazy - 2 The Rocker - 2 Usually not a huge fan of live albums, and this definitely could've been shortened by a few tracks, but it was a blast.
Here we are again with what feels like an insignificant inclusion of a live album. Yes they sound good, yes it's fantastic 70s hard rock, but does it seem like a significant live album, enough for its inclusion over other Thin Lizzy albums? Not really. So why not just a greatest hits album, if they were going to include this? I don't know. Anyway, I digress, but I enjoyed this so have your stars.
Between 2and 3
Better than I was expecting
Honestly pretty good listen
I love Thin Lizzy but find it really hard to enjoy live albums. Can’t hold it against them though.
Right group, wrong album. Go early young man, go early.
I really dug this recording. Live recordings are actually not always my favourite but this one had amazing power and urgency. Also since this is a live album it's worth mentioning they didn't mix 'crowd noises' in too heavily.
Finally listened to it more than 2 years after.. september 2025, pretty solid album, I like the deeper notes of his voice 3.5
didnt get this at all originally. turns out southbound is actually the key to immortal life
Would have been nice if I could listen to this whole thing on Spotify
Bonne qualité audio pour un album enregistré live. Du rock assez classique pour ce que je peux en juger. Me fait passer un bon moment, sans trop se démarquer
The only Thin Lizzy song I'd heard before today was "Emerald," the b-side to a song that I believe is titled "The Fellas Are Here In Our City Again." I kid, I'd only ever heard "The Boys Are Back in Town," which, for the record, is a very fun song. However, with that tiny sample of their catalog, and with the help of some user reviews, I had a pretty good idea of what I was in for: some okay '70's rock. And I think that's exactly what I got. Aside from Phil Lynott's vocals, not much else stuck out to me on this album. The guitar hooks were fun but unremarkable, the rhythm instruments were just kind of there, and the lyrical content was about what I'd expect from a band whose big hit sounds like it's talking about Danny Zuko and the rest of the T-Birds coming back after serving two years for larceny. I will say that the segue from "Cowboy Song" to "The Boys Are Back in Town" was really slick, which is an admittedly weird thing to admire, but I kind of had to take what I was given here. I don't think this album is bad, but it just takes a back seat to all of the other great things that were coming out in the '70's.
Some fun songs, some others I didn't enjoy.
I swear I didn't have a hairy back before listening to this!
Not a fan of live albums but apparently this was overdubbed so it sounded better than usual live albums. That doesn't really make it a live album and I can see why it rubbed people the wrong way. The album is incredibly long but there's some good guitar work here. Don't think I'd listen to it again though.
Classic radio rock
love Thin Lizzy, but prefer the studio albums
Download Festival 2011, Thin Lizzy on the main stage. Me on my friends shoulders as they play "Boys are Back in Town" which is kinda funny since that friend hadn't realised by that point they were a woman all along, and have since transitioned. I'm in my festival poncho and jester hat, and get featured on the main screen. We go wild!! It was even shown on the highlights on Kerrang, and that still image took ages for me to screenshot and save. That was my Facebook profile photo for years on end. A core memory. The albums just alright.
While I'm typically opposed to Live/ Greatest Hits albums being included on this list, and especially ones that aren't truly live and have been overdubbed, I found this was a very nice intro to Thin Lizzy. I was previously only familiar with the hits
alr
This is well made but the songs are not great.
Went in expecting to hate it. Not a big fan of 80s rock. Heard most of the songs a thousand times. But, I enjoyed it. Probably because it was live. Best song: Southbound
Much as I love Thin Lizzy and knew a lot of the songs I could’ve done without a very long live album. if it indeed can be called live. Too long, too many guitar solos, wore my patience a bit thin. Their singles are absolute belters though. But I prefer smaller doses.
The Boys are Back in Town is an all-time favorite. The album was enjoyable, even with the shenanigans that come with a live album.
I certainly knew the name Thin Lizzy, and it turns out, I knew them from the song "The Boys Are Back in Town." But other than that, I went into this totally blind. At first, I kind of rolled my eyes and wondered why this was on this list. The band can certainly play, though none of the songs seemed very inspired or interesting. But I don't know, it has it charms, too. I soon found myself nodding along to a couple of tracks. "Massacre" was pretty great, and it reminded me of early U2. A couple other songs had me thinking, "Oh, that's actually kind of cool." The drum solo was even kind of fun. I know there is some controversy over how much of this was recorded live and how much of it was overdubbed later. Whatever. It was perhaps more of a deep dive into the band than I needed, and I could have used a less weedly-weedly guitar solos, but at the end of the day, I'm glad I heard it. Maybe if I listened again, I'd get more out of it.
While not exactly my style of music, there is something raucous and fun about Thin Lizzy.
Vähemmän äijää, kuin muistelin. Ilahduttava perjantaiaamupäivän kokonaisuus.
En vieläkään tiedä livelevyistä, mutta eipä tässä liveisyys liikoja haitannut. Klassista rokkailua, sopii perjantaihin. 3/5, melkein nelonen.
The one and only Huey Lewis on harmonica for Baby Drives Me Crazy.
Well, the cover terrified me and I didn't expect anything good. Anyway, it was quite fun.
This is one of those times where I had to listen to an album I never would have freely chosen, and this time I was right. While this is never a bad album, it never caught my attention beyond being a whole lot of unmemorable mid-70s guitar rock to me.
For a live album, I thought that it was a pretty good one. For me, the rockin' from the 70s only goes so far on my enjoyment scale. In small slices, I can really rock out, but then it just seems to get less and less interesting. So, my appreciation for this album is limited.
I'm not a Thin Lizzy fan...and I don’t usually like live albums….but, this album, pulls it off. A good selection of songs, performed well in front of a crowd. After this listen, i just might pay more attention to other Thin Lizzy albums. Surprised. I am. 3/5
If you’ve ever been listening to ‘Jailbreak’ or ‘Boys are back in town’ and thought to yourself wow I wish I could hear live versions of these classic rock tracks plus one hour ten minutes more of other ones by Thin Lizzy this is the album for you
Great album if you're in the garage working on your car. But I'm not. Pretty solid guitar riffs though.
2.5/5 nothing special just 70s rock
Not a fan of live albums
Lekkere rockmuziek. Helaas vind ik live registraties niet zo fijn. ***
This guy has about the best voice and delivery in rock.
Far more enjoyable than I imagined. Even live, this band sound so good.
Good energy on this live album, but nothing else too remarkable to set it apart from anything else. Still, not a bad listen by any means. 3/5.
Cowboy Song and Boys Are Back in Town are pretty much the only tracks I cared about in this 77 minute live (but not entirely live) album. 6/10
I have a negative bias towards hard rock, but if I focus on the music on its own, it was alright.
surprisingly listenable. may have to come back and listen to the rest of the album
Fine live record but it's nothing special no idea why this is here
Classic rock, with just a bit of a harder edge
this album kind of requires that you like thin lizzy. some good ones on here, but they're not necessarily always my cup of tea. fun listen, though, and cool to hear the crowd engaged
live albums are super super hit or miss and this one didn't really do anything for me, definitely has some of their better tracks but i don't feel this is an improvement over the studio versions
Some great songs, just not a huge fan of live albums
Good classic rock album.
Seemed like pretty regular rock, nothing particularly special or unique about it. And an automatic deduction for being a live album.
Alright
I was a bit unsure of this as I started listening, frankly I think it starts off pretty weak with Jailbreak (an OK song) and Emerald (pass) We then get a couple of great songs in a row including a great love song Still In Love With You. We also hear the famous The Boys are Back In Town, which is the rare live version that I enjoy as much as the original. Ending is a bit weak imho, but not bad overall. Definitely would relisten to a few tracks, but not the whole album.
vagg og velta. ryþmi og melódía. allt í lagi. 3,5.
Only partially in Spotify
it’s pretty cool but there’s only so much i can take
Yeah, like the hits but it was a bit of a slog.
Otro disco en directo y que además no está completo en Spotify. No suena mal y está entretenido. Con "The Boys Are Back in Town", "Cowboy Song" o "Dancing in the Moonlight (It's Caught Me in Its Spotlight)" es suficiente para tener 3 estrellas. Aunque no creo que sea un disco imprescindible.
Well, I don't generally like live albums, and I don't generally like double albums, so we're not off to a great start here. Overall, I feel the same way about this that I feel about most live albums. This sounds like a fucking kick ass concert to be at, and the recording of it doesn't really do it justice. 3/5 Please stop sending me double live albums, I have no use for them
More like a 2.5 but overall enjoyed more than expected. I thought they were more metal for some reason, proven wrong!
For an album that didn’t fit my vibe i gotta say it’s pretty good
Even though I never really listened to this band, they somehow seem to have the archetypal 70s hard rock sound. Enjoyable in bursts, and the live energy on this album is great (as is the mix, at least for the time).
I've struggled with what to say about Thin Lizzy. I came across a review of the Jailbreak album by Marty Sartini Garner (https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/thin-lizzy-jailbreak/) which helped me bring my feelings into focus, and really applicable to Live and Dangerous. I shall now quote liberally: "Like many songs of its era, “The Boys Are Back in Town” evangelizes the poseur myth of rock’n’roll: It wants you to believe that the music can whisk you away from who you actually are. … Thin Lizzy’s unwavering belief in their power as a band and the simple joy they get from playing together is so strong, it nearly makes the legend feel like it’s worth believing in, no matter if you know how all of these stories pan out. Who wouldn’t want to feel this free, even if the freedom dies the moment the record’s over? …. The band is simply too happy, too taken by how much they enjoy what they’re doing—both the music they were making and the way it allowed them to see themselves—for the power and aggression of these songs to come across as truly dangerous or liberating. … In effect, it turned the band into something like professional wrestlers working the circuit—the muscles they flex are real, the fights themselves aren’t, and they can still feel the humming in their bodies for days afterward. They knew how to use this to their artistic advantage. On its surface, [“Jailbreak”] serves as a warning shot, the cry before the battle: “Tonight there’s gonna be trouble,” Lynott promises. It’s tough-guy shit, but it’s impossible to believe. All four of them are strutting, making a show of how easily they can control their power. This swagger—the knowingness of it, how plainly they telegraph their pleasure—is absurd; escaping prison has never sounded less risky. The original Thin Lizzy played with David Bowie and Slade, and Lynott’s experience observing expert showmen up close, as well as the band’s own connection with their audience, let them embrace the absurdity of living one’s life as a rock star. It’s a trait they shared with ZZ Top, and it’s what makes Lynott as irresistible on “Jailbreak” as Billy Gibbons is on “La Grange.” He’s clearly having a ball, savoring the posture of the chorus as he leans deep into the words “Don’t you be around,” practically cooing for the listener in a way that is anything but threatening. He obviously wants you to be around. … Lynott enjoyed a reputation as a poetic lyricist, and his rakishness has an air about it that is popularly associated with poetry, or maybe just with poets: He implies a self-contained sensuality, a somewhat tragic devotion to love, a presumed dedication to deeper things. Put another way: He was a little pretentious. It’s certainly a way of saying that his lyrics were usually decent at best, but that pretension makes him a compelling figure; it gives these songs a charge they would lack in hands that weren’t so silky." This really put a finger on what I liked (and also disliked about this album); they have rock and roll swagger to burn. They are tight and heavy, and can swing, and they are having a ball. They play the rock and roll outlaw bad-boy image for all it is worth, although (and this is the key point of the review that spoke to me), _nobody_ really believes it. But they are having a blast, and they are inviting the audience to have a blast with them. I listened through to this, and then checked out the footage of their 1978 gig at the Sydney Opera House (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5aif_E102wU&t=2174s), and man, they could tear it up. And the audience seems to be having a pretty great time. How live is this album? While there is certainly some post-production overdubbing and polishing (a lot less than on Kiss Alive, I suspect), this is a great sounding record, and the excitement comes through. I was reading up, and apparently the track Southbound was a soundcheck recording, and you can really hear the difference in energy level. The band is really feeding off the audience, and the energy level is really high. The twin guitar attack is tight and exciting (I enjoyed Robertson and Gorham trading fours on Emerald), and helps establish the blueprint that clearly influential on New Wave of British Heavy Metal and the bands that develop after that. Producer Tony Visconti has given the whole album a terrific sheen without compromising on the visceral excitement. Thin Lizzy had toured with Slade and Bowie prior to this, and learned a lot about stagecraft. Apparently Chas Chandler (then Slade's manager) threatened to throw Thin Lizzy off the tour because of Phil Lynott's poor stage presence and lack of interaction with the audience. How far he came in just a few years! You can hear on this record (and see on the Opera House footage) how he could work a crowd. Clearly, they were a terrific live band and a really great night out, I'm sure. It's a pity the songs are a bit weak. Well played, but a bit rote, and clearly just posturing at being dangerous. This also suffers from the problem of most double albums; too long, too much filler. Given their tendency to rely on their arrangements, this could have easily been trimmed to a tight and terrific single album, where the lack of variety would not have been quite as evident. Still, highlights for me include Jailbreak, Emerald, Massacre, Still in Love with you (cheesy though it might be), Suicide, and, of course, The Boys are Back in Town. Surprising cameo from Huey Lewis on harmonic on Baby Drives Me Crazy, a purely filler audience participation song that I would cut in a heartbeat. So, I found this album energetic and fun while listening to it, but it dissolves like fairy floss as soon as it is over. Three stars.
3.5 generyczny rock, "The boys are back in town" klasyka.
Not the Thin Lizzy album I would have liked to hear today, but it's pretty enjoyable. I was prepared not to like it, and I do agree that the "overdubbing" gives the album somewhat of an uncanny, live-not-live feel. Like something is just off about it. But then you know, I listened, and these songs still rock. I'd probably recommend the studio albums, which have better production, but you can't deny that TL were pretty awesome. Fave Songs: Emerald, Massacre, Cowboy Song, Still in Love with You, Suicide, Don't Believe a Word, Johnny the Fox Meets Jimmy the Weed, The Boys Are Back in Town
notes - live album by irish rock band thin lizzy - drums are SO GROOVY - really incredible instrumentalists - There’s some debates about whether or not the album was really “live” - a couple songs here are real standouts but none are awful - Very consistent if a bit long fav - still in love with you - pink floyd vibes a bit least fav - johnny the fox - funny but definitely not my fav song 3/5 - enjoyable but can only see myself going back to a couple songs
Typical 70's "Foghat Rule" album - double, live. The sound on this is really weird - apparently they overdubbed most of it in the studio and just left in the drums and audience noise from the live shows? You can tell the sound is really off. If you like Thin Lizzy I'm sure this is a fantastic record. Unfortunately, I don't like Thin Lizzy...
I like the parts that sound like Van Morrison. I don’t like the parts that sound like Kiss. This whole record is pretty standard toolbox rock but Lynott’s voice stands out as something unique among the standard 70s hard rock sounds.
Pretty bog standard hard rock mostly, obviously some important rockers in the mix, and also redeemed somewhat by some genuinely weird lyrical detours along the way.
A fantastic dive into thin lizzy’s best songs! it’s a real shame that it’s a live album. I do not like live albums man I do not like them sam I am. Saving grace: some of the solos are fire. best tracks (if they were not live versions: dancing in the moonlight, cowboy song, still in love with you. best track (live version specifically): emerald
Generic rock from the 1970s
Really enjoyed one ballad I’ve never heard before
If Boys, the only Thin Lizzy track I know going in, is anything to judge it by, Live and Dangerous contains nothing but solid renditions. The almost total lack of style change must be noted, but the record also contains a slowed-down moment of singing I didn't end up hating. The recording quality is consistently very good, the energy maintains for the full hour and change, and the band has a neat both-sides-of-the-Atlantic thing going on.
Couldn't get on with this, mainly due to the difficulty finding a copy to listen to and it being g a live album, but also classic rock. Shame as have liked thin lizzy sometimes.
You know I really like Thin Lizzy while simultaneously having simply no desire to ever listen to them. Phil Lynott is very charismatic and you can tell in this live album and you know what the songs are pretty good too but my life would basically be the same if I never listened to them. They are a band I would love to like but basically don't. Perhaps too many Liz songs ended up on Top Gear compilations and they have become indelibly marred. As far as this album goes, it's think Lizzy songs but live. There's some electricity in the air but otherwise there's limited benefit to the format. On top of that, the version I found was the deluxe edition which was perhaps overly deluxe. No one needs Thin Lizzy live for 1 hour 40 unless you were actually there. Felt like a slog by the end. I remain neutral.
This is fine. Fairly generic. Decent guitar work. Some good jams. 3 is probably too high
pretty good 70s era hard rock. I find myself hearing a lot of this in bands listen to now that are going for that throwback sound
I was beginning to wonder if there were no more live albums but here is another one. Nice performances although I’m reading it’s overdubbed. Well it’s a nice recording and lest leave it at that
Fine. Boys are back in town and all that.
Classic stuff and really listenable
2-3
Fun, energetic live album.
Tja best goed, misschien niet mijn genre
pas mal cet album de hard rock, bonne découverte
This was really fun! I struggle with live albums a bit - and this one (like many others) is cut from a few different shows. There's a bit too much instrumental (which works when you're there, but not so much when you're listening to it on your own at 9.30 on a Wednesday morning!), but that doesn't mark it down too much. Phil Lynott's voice and attitude is great, would've been great to actually see them live I reckon. Good, but not great. 3/5.
This Lizzy was a tour de force in the 70's. Whisky in the Jar followed by The Boys Are Back in Town spelled great success for the Irish lads. So, naturally, their 1978 live album serves as a testament to their success. Their best songs, a killer crowd, and the last Thin Lizzy release with guitarist Brian Robertson makes this an especially special live album. It's good! They mix their best stuff with their lesser-known stuff and make you work for The Boys Are Back in Town (on the second CD). I do think their less popular songs are like that for a reason, as they left very little impression on me. It especially loses me in the back half after The Boys Are Back in Town, which cements how overly long this live album this. Still worth a listen, but requires more of your time and attention.
Classic 70s rock Not much too it other than good recordings for 70-80s audio and catchy tunes The boys are back in town
the transition to boys are back in town was cool everything was what you would expect from rock of the time
Interesting album - lots of live performances
I think I finally figured out my problem with live albums. If it's really good then you keep thinking about how much better the concert itself must have been, and if it's bad you keep thinking about why you wouldn't just listen to the original song recordings. At least this one is pretty good (minus some stupid banter, but maybe in 1978 it was considered "fresh").
Estuvo ok, supongo.
NICE
A good live album, a lot of hits I’m sure any thin lizzy fan would enjoy this.
OK
Solid live rock album. I thought the dual guitars sounded great without sounding too crowded. Thought the album was a bit too long.
This album is a pretty decent collection of the hits.
The boys are back in town
Pretty good. Kind of repetitive but still a good listen. Good guitar
It “live” but not truly live.
It was good and fun, especially when The Boys are Back in Town came out of nowhere. Sounds mixing is also pretty good. This is the lowest 3 that I can give though; nothing else REALLY stood out.
A good laugh. Jailbreak as an opener had me bought in.
je toho prostě moc halo
The epitome of 70s hard rock, so you already know if you love it or not
I enjoy live albums and had heard songs from this here and there on other Thin Lizzy albums but it just doesn't do it for me. Also learning that there a lot of overdubs is quite disheartening. 2.5/5
sounds good for a live album, a bit too long and too many blues jams
On my first listen I thought the live performance was missing a lot of energy. I didn't really notice anything that stood out until the album hit Massacre at track 6. That song was pumpin' - give me an album full of that! Alas, it went right back to a snoozefest with the softy Still in Love With You. Even The Boys are Back in Town had just average energy. It didn't really crank back up until Warriors, but I'll admit those last six tracks were busting with energy and swagger, especially the last two to close it out (way more fan engagement and oozing stage presence). So, side 4 epic but side 1 pedantic, with only a few highlights in between. Granted, when I went back for a second listen after finishing side 4, I was more amped up and felt more connected to side 1. Still, a little too uneven to be great.
Pretty straight-forward 70s rock with some great guitar solos. Before listening to this, I couldn't have even told you who played "The Boys are Back in Town." Fun listen, but I was definitely ready to move on by the end. Favorite tracks: Jailbreak, Southbound (really nice guitar solo), Still in Love With You, The Boys are Back in Town.
well produced live album
i was underwhelmed because i assumed this would be a very fun rock album but it just wasn’t anything out of the ordinary. i did still like it but it wasn’t spectacular :):
Carino, ma non capisco perché live
It’s good enough, but not consistent.
Good, manufactured in places, quite samey throughout, but a couple of tracks made me sit up and take notice
Fínt rokk. fagmannlega flutt og kröftuglega. Þarf samt ekki að hlusta aftur.
The exact same (absurdly amazing) hard rock song for 1 hour. I didn't have the right feeling to really enjoy this live album, but it's very likable and impossible don't to note how much influent (also influenced by their predecessors) it is. Somedays I miss hard rock like this, even not being so good
A good live album - if you like Thin Lizzy. And I don't mind them - had a good time listening to it, but not something I'd probably revisit often.
I enjoy the 2 guitars duking it out on tracks like Southbound and Massacre. Overall it is a nice collection of live performances, but doesn't really exceed any expectations that I have of the band, which were mediocre to begin with. Solid album, but this is a band that really does blend into a crowd for me. I found the record to be a little long as well. Fave tracks: Southbound, The Boys Are Back in Town, Warriors
