Reviews (page 2 of 7)

This vaulted Missy to the Queen of hip-hop for me. This album was crafted! Who else could get 50 cent, Jay Z, Beyonce, TLC, Ludacris and Method Man. Loved it.

Classic from one of the best to ever do it.

So glad I’m doing this 1001 albums thing otherwise probably wouldn’t have listened to this album. So good, powerful, fun, sexy, empowering, emotional. Love that literally every song has the ‘missy elliot exclusive’ tag, kinda iconic.

Ooo I loved this !! I can’t believe I never have listened to a Missy Elliot album

DJ, please pick UP your PHONE im on the REquestLINE

This one really surprised me. I had only heard the singles before listening to this, and I'm just shocked how great all of the beats are, and how listenable every single track is. There's zero filler here. Can't believe I'm giving 5 stars to a Missy Elliott album, but that's the beauty of this whole experiment.

The fourth album from the legend herself Misdemeanor!! This was a fun experience for me from top to bottom because this is my first time hearing this project from front to back. With two personally classic tracks like Work It and gossip Folks, I liked the theme of her just trying to inject some positivity back into the rap scene after the recent tragedies around that time. I think she did a fantastic job of creating a project that’ll make you feel good and want to dance a little. Unless you’re the person in the second comment, of course.

What a voice for women, for hip hop and for the east coast

wow.kochsm wiadomości głosowe między piosenkami, pussycat hell yeah missy wie 9 co chodzi, otwarcie freaky kocham

fav one so far, love an album that tells a story

Oh my gosh Work It was such a throwback!!

I'm well aware of the hits on here, but haven't listened to the full album. This is great. The hits are total bangers, and even the non-singles are solid.

Early 2000s rap. All her epic songs. Outstanding album.

Already loved the singles off of this album. It was a treat to listen to the whole thing. Immaculate production. I still love Missy.

Excellent album. Great production. Excellent lyricism with her very own unique style. Encouraged positivity at times as well which is missing a lot in hip hop, especially at that time. Funny as well.

*This album has great cohesion with its message of using hip hop to elevate people instead of resorting to violence and honor past hip hop heroes who have passed away. She also does an amazing job of using her status and creativity to empower women with her message. *The cameos are crazy- Jay-Z, Method Man, Beyonce, etc. and the sound is such a dynamic and unique hip hop sound.

I wrote a glowing review and accidentally clicked off to another tab and erased everything. I'll sum it up, fantastic early 2000's rap and hip hop. Great album.

Damn every song brought the heat. If you told me Timbaland produced a Clipse album but then replaced all their vocals with Missy I’d believe you. The beats on this album are insane. Loved it!

Love this album

Brilliant.

I’ve always enjoyed Missy Elliott, but never listened to an entire album. But I really enjoyed this.

A certified freaking banger and not even Missy’s best

Rating: 4.7/5 Short Review: Time traveler in a tracksuit creates funky feminist bops in the middle of a boy-band apocalypse. Favorite Track: “Work It” – the sonic equivalent of someone rewinding your brain and then making it dance. Still sounds like the future.

Missy Elliot knows how to lay down a good beat. Well, maybe she doesn’t know how but whoever she employs to do that, knows how to do it. And ahhh yes the token Donald Trump shoutout in hip hop before they were told to not like him. Ahhh such simple times back then. I didn’t expect I’d hear a Missy Elliot version of Bring the Pain. Well, well, well. Missy has done the job, I will give her another listen. I’m really mind blown over this one. Each track is different from the other. The only constant is the groove, you want to get moving listening to this and I don’t dance. Like not even a little bit. I could pass on Nothing Out There for Me. It’s not a good song. In fact I was thinking “this song sucks, it sounds like Beyoncé bullshit”and that is never listenable. Then I look and it’s gosh darn Beyoncé. Go figure. Skip. Choice cut: Gossip Folks

I unexpectedly loved this

This album is a masterpiece. Great messaging in the interludes also.

5/5. Что-то на великом.

Hey, everyone, did you know that this Missy Elliott album is full of Missy Elliott exclusives?!?!

f o d a

Finally a famale singer, I was waiting for this for so long. I'm not really a hip-hop person but much enjoyed this album. Don't know what else to say

One of the bester Missy Elliott albums, not a single song on this is bad.

The flow is smooth and the beats are hard. Album was constructed good. 10/10

5 *s from the moment Bill Gates and Donald Trump get name dropped for not fighting. If this was an early 00s look back at the 80s and 90s, I felt that

A perfect album.

Singles are still fresh. Was her career kinda peaking here and then just done?

This album is timeless.

Banger after banger love Missy and her little spoken sections, so much charm in this.

## In-Depth Review: *Under Construction* by Missy Elliott Missy Elliott’s *Under Construction* (2002) stands as a pivotal album in hip-hop and R&B, blending nostalgia, innovation, and raw personal reflection. This review explores the album’s lyrics, music, production, themes, and influence, and concludes with a critical assessment of its strengths and weaknesses. --- ## **Lyrics** Missy Elliott’s lyricism on *Under Construction* is both playful and profound. The album opens with Missy speaking candidly about the loss of Aaliyah and her disillusionment with the direction of hip-hop, immediately setting a tone of introspection and cultural critique[1][2]. Throughout the record, Elliott oscillates between braggadocio, humor, and vulnerability. - **Playful Wordplay:** On tracks like “Work It,” Missy employs clever reversals, double entendres, and even reverses her vocals, showcasing her inventive approach to language[1][3]. The song’s nonsensical hooks and playful delivery are balanced by sharp commentary on gender and sexuality. - **Social Commentary:** “Back in the Day” (featuring Jay-Z) reminisces about the “good old days” of hip-hop, lamenting the rise of violence and beef in the genre while paying homage to icons like Tupac, Dr. Dre, and Salt-N-Pepa[2][4]. - **Empowerment and Sexuality:** Songs such as “Pussycat” and “Nothing Out There For Me” (featuring Beyoncé) celebrate female sexuality and autonomy, with Missy unapologetically addressing desire and fidelity[2][4]. - **Grief and Resilience:** The album’s closing track, “Can You Hear Me?” (featuring TLC), is a heartfelt tribute to Aaliyah and Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes, reflecting on loss and the enduring strength of Black womanhood[2]. The lyrics throughout the album are marked by a blend of confidence, wit, and genuine emotion, making *Under Construction* both entertaining and deeply resonant. --- ## **Music and Production** The sonic landscape of *Under Construction* is a testament to the synergy between Missy Elliott and Timbaland, with Elliott also stepping up as a co-producer[1][5][6]. - **Old-School Homage:** The album deliberately references the sound and ethos of 1980s and 1990s hip-hop, using classic breakbeats (e.g., Bob James’ “Take Me To The Mardi-Gras” on “Work It”) and nods to early rap’s playful, experimental spirit[1][7]. - **Innovative Beats:** Timbaland’s production is as futuristic as it is nostalgic, blending spacey synths, off-kilter rhythms, and unconventional samples. Tracks like “Funky Fresh Dressed” use the reversed drum patterns from the Beastie Boys’ “Paul Revere,” further blurring the line between homage and innovation[1]. - **Versatility:** The album traverses a range of styles, from the dancefloor-ready “Work It” to soulful ballads and hard-hitting bangers. Even when Elliott takes the production reins, as on “Pass That Dutch,” she demonstrates a deft touch with sultry R&B jams and energetic club tracks[5]. - **Guest Features:** Collaborations with Jay-Z, Ludacris, Beyoncé, Method Man, and TLC add variety and depth, with Missy often outshining her guests through sheer charisma and lyrical dexterity[5][6]. Overall, the production is dense, inventive, and meticulously crafted, balancing accessibility with avant-garde flourishes. --- ## **Themes** *Under Construction* is thematically rich, addressing personal, cultural, and social issues. - **Reconstruction and Healing:** The album’s title and intro frame it as a work of self-repair and collective healing, especially in the wake of Aaliyah’s death and the September 11 attacks[1][2]. Missy uses music as a means to process trauma and advocate for a return to hip-hop’s roots. - **Nostalgia vs. Progress:** Missy’s reverence for old-school hip-hop is clear, but she refuses to be trapped by nostalgia. Instead, she channels the genre’s original spirit of creativity and fun, even as she critiques its contemporary flaws[1][2]. - **Female Empowerment:** Throughout the album, Missy asserts her autonomy, sexuality, and artistry in a male-dominated industry, offering a blueprint for empowerment and self-expression[2][3]. - **Community and Legacy:** By referencing fallen icons and collaborating with a diverse cast of artists, Missy situates herself within a broader lineage, honoring the past while pushing the genre forward[2]. These themes are woven seamlessly into the album’s fabric, giving *Under Construction* a sense of urgency and timelessness. --- ## **Influence** *Under Construction* is widely regarded as a landmark album in hip-hop and R&B. - **Critical and Commercial Success:** The album debuted at number three on the Billboard 200, went double platinum, and received Grammy nominations for Best Rap Album and Album of the Year[2][3]. - **Cultural Impact:** Tracks like “Work It” and “Gossip Folks” became cultural touchstones, influencing a generation of artists with their inventive production and unapologetic lyricism[3]. - **Trailblazing for Women:** Missy’s success with *Under Construction* further solidified her status as a trailblazer, especially for women in hip-hop, showcasing that commercial success and artistic innovation are not mutually exclusive[3]. - **Lasting Legacy:** The album’s blend of nostalgia and futurism has kept it relevant, with critics and fans alike citing it as one of the best hip-hop albums of the 2000s[6][2]. --- ## **Pros and Cons** ### **Pros** - **Inventive Production:** Timbaland and Missy’s beats are both nostalgic and forward-thinking, creating a soundscape that is uniquely their own[1][6]. - **Lyrical Versatility:** Missy’s lyrics are witty, empowering, and emotionally resonant, covering a wide range of topics from grief to sexuality[1][2]. - **Cohesive Themes:** The album’s focus on reconstruction, nostalgia, and empowerment gives it a strong conceptual backbone[2]. - **Iconic Singles:** “Work It,” “Gossip Folks,” and “Back in the Day” are standout tracks that remain influential and widely recognized[6][3]. - **Strong Features:** Collaborations with major artists add depth and variety without overshadowing Missy’s presence[5][6]. - **Cultural Significance:** The album’s impact on hip-hop, especially for women and marginalized voices, is profound and enduring[2][3]. ### **Cons** - **Inconsistent Ballads:** Some critics argue that the album’s slower, more saccharine ballads pale in comparison to its uptempo tracks and Timbaland’s signature funk, occasionally disrupting the album’s momentum[5]. - **Occasional Overreach:** Missy’s ambition to blend old-school homage with new-school innovation sometimes results in tracks that feel less focused or lack replay value[7]. - **Lyrical Repetition:** The frequent use of explicit language and recurring themes of wealth and sexual bravado may feel repetitive or alienating to some listeners[4]. - **Polarizing Content:** The album’s explicit lyrics and brash persona have drawn criticism from more conservative audiences, with some finding its empowerment messages overshadowed by vulgarity[4]. - **Not Her Absolute Peak:** While many consider *Under Construction* a high point, some critics and fans view it as slightly below the creative peaks of Missy’s earlier albums, citing less overall cohesion or innovation in certain tracks[5][7]. --- ## **Conclusion** *Under Construction* is a masterclass in balancing homage and innovation, personal reflection and cultural commentary. Missy Elliott’s fearless lyricism, combined with Timbaland’s genre-bending production, makes the album a standout in early 2000s hip-hop. Its influence endures, not just in the music itself, but in the doors it opened for future artists—especially women and Black creatives—seeking to redefine the boundaries of hip-hop and R&B. Despite minor criticisms regarding ballad quality and occasional thematic repetition, *Under Construction* remains a vital, joyous, and deeply human work. It is a celebration of hip-hop’s past, a critique of its present, and a blueprint for its future.

An undeniable classic. I have such a vivid memory of watching the Work It video on TRL and then begging my mom for hip hop lessons.

Love Missy. Already had a few of these songs saved, added a couple more I didn’t remember. Slide was the dark horse on this album for me.

Obviously a millennial touchstone, great production and Missy’s flow still sounds fresh, inventive, and very funny. She really earned our love!!!!

Absolute banger

Legend

Wow. Beyond the two singles (which are bangers) this album was non-stop. Really surprised how much I enjoyed it. Love that early 2000s hip-hop sound. Probably a 4.5 but I'll round up

I really enjoyed the clips of her talking at the beginning and between some songs - the whole album felt like a time capsule to 2001-2, and it was cool to hear from Missy about what she was thinking at the time she was recording & releasing it. Work It obviously is a classic for a reason but other standouts for me were Gossip Folks, Nothin Out There For Me, and Slide. Pussy at was by far the weakest track, but everything else was so good, whatever. Joyful and fun, with real depth and an artist who’s not afraid to take risks while giving it 150%. Loved listening, will play it again many times, AND I feel like I got an education on a very particular moment in hip hop history. Thanks Missy.

She's so smooth god damn I thought every track was fucking incredible, bar the one with Jay-Z and Work It She's so underrated as a rapper. I never hear name mentioned with the greats. She's a phenomenal artist

The greatest female rapper of all time delivered a gem. This right here is prime 2000s Hip Hop featuring some of the most influential rappers of the decade. Favorite Track: "Gossip Folks".

Future perfect.

Fucking Banger "It still sounds incredibly fresh, in all meanings of the word," observed the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' guitarist, Nick Zinner.

Now this is a Missy Elliott exclusive, this album could just be Work It a dozen times and it would get 5 stars. But everything else here is great also. Yay!

Captivating encounter with an album path frequently walked

Some of it is a little hilariously outdated today (Donal Trump having no time for politics / Diddy being something to brag about) but you can’t deny she’s the best female rapper in the business

This is.... a Missy Elliott.....ex-clu-sive.

her message resonated with me

I should’ve listened to more Missy back in the day. Real fun how she rapped with some pretty famous talented rappers and actually rapping with them to their styles and flows. She’s extremely talented.

Such a great album! Missy Elliott has no misses on this album. "Work It" and "Pussycat" are the two standouts to me.

I frequently lament the state of early 2000s music, and then Missy Elliott reminds me that there was some really, really great stuff from then too. This album sounds years ahead of its time, and cements Elliott as a producer to look towards. She does everything almost perfectly here, with the exception of the spoken intro track. That's never a great thing. Some absolute tracks of the ages here, still sound brand new twenty years later.

This was great. I was wavering between 4-5 but went with a 5 because what the hell. She killed it.

One thing I've learned from this project is the hip-hop interstitial bit. I don't know the proper name for this. Missy's got the best interstitials. And it's safe to say I can now answer the question, "who is your favorite hip-hop artist." Fuck yeah! I loved this. I didn't catch the Missy wave in the early 2000s but I caught it now and will be working my way through her library. "We can all stand for going under a little construction"

I can't believe I never listened to this, I love female rappers sm, she's just amazing

These 90s albums just get better and better (whatever I know this one is a 00s album but you know what I mean). Too good. Perfect rap album, fun, playful, clever, and also impactful when it wants to be.

I loved this album. First, every artist should start out with a brief track explaining what they’re doing. But this album was so joyous, and had so many great guests on it. Gossip Folks is such a great track, but I liked it all.

A perfect feminist hip hop manifesto with brilliant music beds.

Can she work it? Yes, she can. An absolute belter of an album.

Well finding out that I adore Missy Elliott has been a real discovery from this listening project. It's so, so fun.

SO good. some classics like work it, and some amazing features including a maiden named beyonce. What's not to like.

Chucha yo como no he escuchado esta man todavía, absolutely goated

Mrs. Missy Elliot the woman that you are... 10/10.

A great listen. Had not heard it before.

Doesn’t feel dated. Missy definitely doesn’t get enough credit.

Why have I only heard the hits? Great album. Timbaland at his best too. Before he became a parody of himself.

WOW, <3 Missy Intro/ Go to the Floor - Message is authentic and raw, you can tell Missy is above the bullshit and on some. Set it Off!!!! Coming out swinging She delivers both smash radio hits and introspective emotional tracks on the album. As she said it herself, she is "Under Construction" working on herself and I'm here for it. You can hear Missy's influence in pretty much every female hip hop artist out now. They all want to be flashy and spit bars, but they lean too heavy on sexuality 🍑 to sell records and unfortunately that works (discussion for another place/time). Missy uses a fresh combo of funk, RnB mashups, old school hip hop, and her own Missy style to Bring the Pain and WORK IT! Combine her flow with production from Timbaland... shyyytttt it's a wrap... game, set, match! 🎾 I need a glass of water after this one 🥵🔥

Wow! This is the ME album that I was looking for. Great all around wonderful.

One of the best albums to come out of the early 2000’s

Straight fucking bangin’. Really really tasty shit

Well, this was exceptional, wasn’t it? I was especially pleased with the transition from yesterday’s outstanding album…I couldn’t have dreamed it up any better!

Fun samples and catchy beats with lyrics that are clever, sexy, and heartfelt. Missy Elliott has swagger and this album is fantastique!

So much fucking fun. Peak Timbaland production. Missy being great. And the entire album is just dedicated to old school fun hip hop. Love it

Holy shit, this is good. Missy is an all time great and no, not all time great “female rapper”. She’s here to remind you just who she is - she’s funny, sexy, biting and brilliant. Under Construction maintains the fire right to the end.

Our eldest cat is named after Mossy Elliot. This album is awesome. Old school hip hop at its finest.

It’s Missy. What else is there to say?

Slapped Missy is a G

Fuck yeah

lovely

Give me some of this in a bun. Varied, and I even like the slower singy ones, which doesn't often happen for me on rap albums!

Call it nostalgia (even tho I’m hearing roughly 12/13 songs for the first time today) but I loved this Both Missy & Timbaland bring out their respective best artistic qualities in each other, & the guests (e.g. TLC, Method Man) are also pretty excellent. I may have just had back-to-back 5-star hip-hop records (where’s that kid who only listens to the Beatles, Floyd & Queen now?), but while I’m still digesting the Outkast one, this more straightforward outing is easier to deliver a verdict with. HL: “Bring the Pain”, “Back in the Day”, “Slide”, “Funky Fresh Dressed”, “Can You Hear Me”, “Work It”

Alright alright. I've been postponing this album for... wow two years now I think, because I'm not the biggest hiphop fan in general but damn, Missy can get it. I can only guess the universe wanted me to enjoy it as much as I did today.

I don't think I've ever listened to any of Missy Elliott's albums before (maybe Supa Dupa Fly if I have), but I thought this album was fantastic. The beats were catchy, the rapping was great, and the lyrical content was outstanding. "Gossip Folks" and "Work It" are both so much fun, but they still feel like they belong on an album with a bit more serious of a tone. Is it gimmicky that she raps backwards in "Work It?" If that's what you think, keep it to yourself, because I think it's genius. I loved that Missy Elliott talked about loss (both personal grief and collective grief in a post 9/11 world), how her vision of hip hop shapes how she makes music, and criticisms of women in music. The duets were really great, especially "Nothing Out There for Me" with Beyonce. Missy Elliott raps with a personal brand of swagger that I don't think I've ever heard before; if I had to summarize it, I'd say it's a 'powerful confidence with a the perfect sprinkle of realistic humility.' I've been trying to stay away from albums on this list that I haven't listened to before, but I'm really tempted to listen to Supa Dupa Fly tonight, because this album has been rattling around my brain all weekend.

Every time I get a Missy album on, it's the best Missy album. I think it dropped off after this, but for four albums she could not put a foot wrong. This one is touching, looks back over hip hop without being regressive, is very sex positive, and just plain slaps. The first 20 minutes is relentlessly good. Work It, Gossip Folks, Funky Fresh Dressed, and collabs with Jigga and Meth that both hit. Genius.

Fantastic album with a lot of amazing guest contributors.

Amaze. Legendary. So fun!

This was a blast

A little patchy, but good overall; the sleazy funk of "Work It" more than makes up for the dire "Back in the Day." She reminds me of Prince in places. I think she helped reclaim hip-hop from misogynist assholes as well.

I think this was the first time I listened to "Work It" in headphones and good ones at that. It's super rad and I love how much layered detail there is to the song. I also love, love, love the opening speech from Missy! I've recently been listening to a lot of Doja Cat and I enjoy how sex positive and confident she is. Missy's "Pussycat" is a rad song and her speech at the end was a pleasant surprise! The track feels like one of the foundational tracks for Doja and others to write the type of stuff they do. I'm really into the sentiment, outreach, and positive messaging that's in this album and to be honest, I'm pleasantly surprised by it.

Classic rap

Disclaimer.

I will always love Missy Elliott, purely for the fact that she was one of my first favourite artists as a young 13 year old back in 2002 - she was so forward, so fresh and all her - and the same goes for the album. Amazing 👏🏾

a little preachy but good

Other than a passing reference to the former fascist douchebag President of the U.S. this holds up. Fun, brilliantly produced hip hop.

Fire from start to finish. Missy is such an underrated MC.

Quality

10/10 I mean come on now

5 Great hip hop

A classic of the kind. Miss Elliott is and will remain a queen and her association with Timbaland propelled her to superstardom. That album is star studded and remains a staple in rap and hip hop history.

Super hard hitting, all the collabs are awesome to hear. She's the real deal.

Great sound, and great non-violent message. Excellent features.

She is marvelous. Flawless production with bangers throughout, flows, features, and soul.

loved it.

Missy Elliott is a hero

Loved it, did not know this before, but it slaps.

This is a classic. Loving the chance to revisit the album. To those who hasn't heard it yet, you have something to look forward to.

Bamgers through and through. I usually don't like monologues, but these fit very well.

Let's go Missy! The sampling on this album is really heavy on the soul and jazz which gives the songs this sense of cool thats hard to beat. Work It is a generational groove. Back In The Day is just all up in my face with Jay giving the opening rap. Pussycat is incredibly explicit, but Missy comes in with an explainer. Aight cool. This album was great I loved it a bunch.

Classic

Sublime in every way

Every song is a BANGER

Owned this album when it came out. I remember 2002 as a blur but this was and still is a banger.

This was great! My first Missy Elliot album. I liked it very much

Maybe the best flow of her generation and the production on this is immaculate

Holy shit this was a surprise, I hated the other album, this one was fantastic

Intense.

Muy fresco, excelente álbum

Loved it. Made me laugh a lot.

5/5 - This album kicks ass

Great rap album by an outstanding artist.

Un poco largo. Pero pues es Missy. Brutal.

love me some 90s hiphop

This was a great album

Yessss girl power in its best form. Speak about sex, speak about how your sad, speak about how your feeling yourself. And do it the way male rappers have forever. A force of nature from missy Elliot here. I didn’t like all the tracks on this, but I felt like it was great at standing out.

This was great actually, something a bit different to the usual rap of this era. Still loads of bling and chrome wheels but a bit of vulnerability too. Had everything, maybe not aged into an all time classic though as it still sounds of its time.

Great 2000s R&B

Loved that this was something other than whiny white British dudes. Beats are killer. 4/5

as a child i thought there was a random man called Mr. Meaner on all her songs. it took so many years to realize that missy is, in fact, the Miss Demeanor in question. duh. i'm so sorry, queen. i liked your album!

I really liked her candor during the intro, interlude, and outro segments, and the beat on "Go to the Floor" was incredibly solid. I absolutely love the Ludacris collaboration on "Gossip Folks", too. Honestly, her guest list in general is just ridiculous, you have Jay-Z, Method Man, and Beyoncé all on one record! "Work It" is probably one of her best songs ever made. I also got major Beastie Boys vibes in the second half of "Funky Fresh Dressed" when they go into that breakdown part, and "Slide" just goes completely hard. It's such a fun, high-energy album that still holds up. Favorite song: "slide"

I put this one off for a few days and I'm sorry I did. What an excellent early 2000's hip hop album. She's got a great flow and some excellent collabs on this one.

Enjoyed this more than I thought I would, even though I quite like some of the well known hits already, particularly Gossip Folks, although at the time I was probably a bit tired of hearing them on the radio. A reworking of Bring the Pain with Method Man is also a highlight. The album as a whole is pretty tight, I could probably do without the last couple, one with TLC and the other a remix of Work It - without them it would be even more focused. It’s a 7/10 album for me but I’ll be generous and round up.

Really surprising album. I had heard the singles many many many times 20+ years ago. I come away impressed by the variety and Missy's rapping.

There’s nothing quite like a Missy album. Even now, so many years later, i feel that no one really managed to immitate her sound. Missy and Timbaland created something magical, their beats are always so satisfyingly beefed up, Missy glides over them like nobody else. I think there are two songs - Pussycat and Hot - that felt a bit superfluous to me, but that doesn’t diminish the quality of the album too much. The guest verses on here are done very well, i especially enjoy Beyoncé and TLC’s appearences. And of course, there is Worth It. A ruthless banger that knows no boundaries and will forever be one of the sickest tracks known to mankind.

Every song is a banger. Regnab a si gnos yreve

Not normally my style but I liked this a lot. Very well made, interesting songs. Had a lot of fun listening to this one.

fabulous

One of the most fun hip hop records I have listened to. Missy is able to craft such interesting flow that every song grabs you at least once, also the production on this is some of the best of the 00's truly a masterclass of hiphop. I do think the main theme of the record is a little underbaked even if I do enjoy the spoken portions of the record and the song that feels like an amalgamation of the emotions felt post 9/11 and post the death of so many great hiphop artist in can you hear me. Dope music by a dope MC. Fav tracks: Bring the pain, gossip folks, work it, funky fresh dressed, and can you hear me

Wednesday, 27 May, 2026 Killer beats and slick rhymes! You can’t go wrong with Missy Elliott and Timbaland. A sound that worked to define the era.

“Work It” is an eternal banger. There are plenty of other bangers to go around here, too. Great features and (as always) great performances from Elliott. I could do without the spoken passages, but at least they’re short. Timbaland and Elliott’s production defined this time. I think of these beats when I think about what was on the radio at the time. He’ll always have that legacy, even if he’s fallen off lately. This is definitely a huge improvement over her debut album (as you’d hope.)

Great songs

> the Beatles These final 10 albums have all been bangers so far

Weezer was right. Timbaland does know his way to the top of the charts. Loved this album, can’t stand still and it’s a steamy, sensual record.

I was not expecting to like this but it was so good. A female rap/hip hop artist just sounds better than a male artist- even though the tracks all follow the same theme and so much of it is about sex. I was thinking what would Jay Z think about this album and 2 tracks later he pops up as a featured artist! I was thinking about the tracks about sex and how it’s the same as male rappers and then we have an interlude explaining her thoughts. The production was on point- the featured artists worked so well on the album and I was disappointed when it came to the end. Fave track- ‘work it’ or possibly ‘slide’ which was superb. Worst track- ‘the intro’ 8.5/10

Pretty good, wild this came out over 20 years ago. Great guests.

Favorite Track: Work It

Well I didn't really expect to like this too much, but guess what. When I'm done with this project I'm going to say that the main thing I've learned from it is how much I like hip-hop. Hearing Missy Elliott's voice in the intro was so nice - she's from Tidewater Virginia and her voice reminds me so much of the voices of a lot of the folks here at home in DC. Every one of these tracks was great - both her fluid rapping and that of the guests like Ludacris. I was originally like "ok I'm just going to listen to one track now and finish it later,” but then I didn't want to turn it off. I don't know if I'll buy a copy of this and listen to it all the time, but I certainly enjoyed it today. 4 stars

Pretty cool, but I'm deducting a star for the spoken bits.

cool album. this sort of genre has never appealed to me but this album was really nice to listen to and it felt consistent

she is cool

Great.

Let's be honest, what makes this is Timbaland's production. Not to say that he didn't define an era and that era may sound dated to some now, but it was a banger of an era. Missy's rap is great in spots and uneven in others. The collaborations are top notch. It's an enjoyable listen all the way through. I get what she was aiming for with Pussycat, but it's the low point of the album. High points Funky Fresh Dressed, Back in the Day, Gossip Folks and Work It.

Always have enjoyed Missy. I've only heard the radio-hits tracks. Not really heard a full album or the deep cuts. This is good. Classic early-00s hip-hop

I liked this album! There was quite a few parts that gave off classic hip hop sounds. The one part that started to get annoying was hearing variations of "another missy elliot exclusive". I will say that her flows/rhyming schemes kind of sounded the same between songs, but it was subtle (luckily).

Really a gorgeous paean to being alive. Makes full use of all the collabs. Missy is one of the greatest to ever do it. Crazy how influential this album is 20 odd years on. The spoken interludes got a little grating. Threw a lot of ass to this in my house this morning.

Great beats from Timbaland and Work It is a classic. Maybe loses half a star to the spoken intro - if you got something to say, sing it! Or rap it! But no speeches pls.

All of this seems very dated now. But still, good album

Solid entry from one of the GOAT

Super cool album with good beats and i love a girlie in hip hop! Amazing features aswell.

Favorite track: Work It

really fun

Terrific album. Enjoyed every second of it.

Hip hop is not really my preferred genre, but I kinda liked this one. I gave her last album I was assigned a 3, but I’ll bump this one up a bit. 3.5 average makes sense to me.

I'll be honest: I thought Intro / Go To The Floor was kind of embarrassing, but after that, I enjoyed the hell out of this. Fun lyrics, great beats, and Missy kicks ass. Gossip Folks, Work It, and Pussycat are all great, but Slide is probably my favorite on the album. Also, nearly every track on this album starts with the line "This is a Missy Elliott exclusive" like she's Geoff at the Game Awards.

Work it. Second Missy album on the list is fucking ridiculous though. Old mate Dimery knows just the two female hip-hop artists, I can tell from his hat.

Favorite Track: Gossip Folks

Pretty fun album. Funky, good rhymes. Plenty danceable.

Album is hit or miss, but the hits are insane.

Love the queen vibes, she is for the girlies. I also like how she talks before the songs about the album

Actually a great album. I like the simple drum backing and repeated rhymes of the first full track Go To The Floor. For similar reasons I also really liked Gossip Folks. Pussycat is also a banger, genuinely funny. Slide another winner for me. I really enjoyed this.

Timbaland is a genius. Bring back artists just speaking to the audience and talking about making the album. Really liked the references to other songs and had some touching tributes.

Misssssssss E what a belter, it’s got everything you want from a hip hop record. Work It has filled club rooms ever since it was released, it’s a staple in the catalogue of any DJ, for nearly any themed night it can slip in. A chameleon. 4.5/5.0 Best Song: Work It

It took a few songs for her style to grow on me, but I found myself enjoying it. I recognized Work It and enjoyed it much more as a full grown women than I did as a child. I also enjoyed Gossip Folks, Pussycat, and Nothing out There for Me. So many talented collaborations!!

This was a fantastic, hiphop record that brought old school beats and a nice flow by Missy.

Very solid 4. I have a number of Missy songs on my running playlists and she always pumps me up.

A pleasant surprise. Good flow, fun lyrics, great guest stars, loved the samples — I’m assuming Timbaland’s production is a key to all this. A solid 4.

There are some really fun beats and songs here, I enjoyed all the features and she gives a great performance throughout. Not all of the songs were exactly my thing, but I still had a lot of fun listening to this. One thing that really bugged me though, was that she starts every song by saying "this is a Missy Elliott exclusive", I got it the first time... Mid 4.

Fantastic rap album. The beats/music are great, Missy’s a solid rapper who serves her music well, and there are great guest spots. The only thing keeping it from being a 5 star album is the lack of variance in the lyrical content; 90 % of the lyrics are about how awesome she is, how awesome her music is, or how horny she is. The only real exception is the Aaliyah tribute song, and while it was heartfelt, that is probably the weakest track on the album. Otherwise throughly enjoyed it.

Usually not into Hip-Hop/Rap.. but I enjoyed this one

This is pretty infectious. Missy Elliott is excellent live, and her energy translates well in a studio album. Timberland is great producer. It’s a fun album.

The Hakeem of the genre. Everyone forgets how good, smart, funny, innovative, talented she is.

Missy is so fucking good. I don’t really have any other comments.

Man. I only new Missy for the bigger radio hits. There is SO MUCH good stuff on this. For a while I was thinking this was a straight 5, but it fades for me with several of the R&B tracks on the back half. But when you've got Ludacris, Jay-Z, Method Man on tracks, and then 50 shows up on the Work It remix, all of whom just compliment and elevate what Missy brings, you've got a STACK of great tracks. It's really a time capsule of sound for the early 2000's, but I'm here for it. 4.5, just can't quite give it the 5 for the back half skips. Favorite discovery: Back in the Day (feat Jay-Z), Funky Fresh Dressed (feat Ms Jade)

Half amazing songs and half duds. The amazing songs win out though.

A very welcome change of pace from what else I've had this week. It's a good album, not amazing but I think its a pretty great showcase of Missy Elliott as an artist. I do think that it does lean on features from other rappers a little bit too much but all the features are good so its not like theres a dip in quality on any of those songs.

Great songs, features, production. So much about this album made me happy

FHiphop #anxioussss FAVS (top 3): gossip folks, funky fresh dressed, nothing out there for me mençoes honrosas: bring the pain, back in the day, slide, play that beat, can you hear me muito bom tudo especialmente a mensagem adorei, nao gostei mt da falação mas da pra aguentar nota final: 4.5/5

Missy Elliott – Under Construction (2002) On Day 63, Under Construction showcased the incredible technical chemistry between Missy Elliott and Timbaland, but the album as a whole felt slightly overrated. Missy is undeniably talented, and her work on each of Timbaland’s futuristic beats is high-level, but there wasn't enough substance for me to cling to. I did like "Pussycat" and "Back in the Day," and I really appreciated the tribute to fallen legends like Aaliyah, Biggie, Pac, and Big L. However, despite the great production and technical skill, there isn't much here that guarantees a return visit for me. It’s a decent listen and a high-quality production, but ultimately a 3/5.

Though I expect they're not going to hold up on repeated listening, I like the spoken word interludes here because they help me to contextualize this album, and how Missy Elliot sees herself in relation to what was going on in hip hop at the time and in the world at large. I'm not sure that she needs to justify why she's making sexually explicit music (you know, because men would never justify why they are writing the same kind of stuff) but for me, as someone who has a weak grasp on the history of rap music and the tendencies and currents in it, how things interrelate, it's helpful. Apparently, and again, coming from someone who doesn't know much here, this album was huge, and from an initial listen very deservedly so. There are a lot of other rappers guesting on here, and they show up strong, but Missy Elliot more than holds her own here. She's a very strong rapper, clever not just in terms of lyrics, but also in her delivery. The production is great. A couple of songs were misses for me, but this is a very good listen.

Listened going to and from work. Missy Elliott reminding the world she's one of the GOATs. Lots of great tracks but a couple misses and didn't love the monologue at the beginning. Wish that was in the liner notes instead. Enjoyed it a lot!

I give this album a 4, as I have a couple of the tracks saved, it was a good experience, but I didn’t find it amazing

dura esattamente quanto arbedo-giubiasco di corsa (lenta ma pur sempre corsa)

Album art 1/5 dreadful

Didn't know Missy Elliott was this fire

This album was on the surface so outside of my wheelhouse but turned out to be so good. Loved it.

A really enjoyable throwback. One of the better albums from the era

Surprisingly good, as it is not my really my genre. Favourites: Work It, Gossip Folks.

There are a few songs on here that broke through to the mainstream in a major way which already means it should be on this list. The other songs were not my style but had an effect on rap going forward. Listen to the hits skip the rest unless you’re a Missy fan

8/10 – Very Good

This album is beyond iconic. So many of the verses and play on words show why it is a notable hip-hop album. I was surprised by the Beastie Boys sample in Funky Fresh Dressed ft. Ms. Jade and I loved it. Favorites: -Bring the Pain ft. Method Man -Work It (duh) -Back in the Day ft. Jay-Z -Funky Fresh Dressed ft. Ms. Jade -Ain't That Funny -Can You Hear Me ft. TLC

Good stuff, well delivered 3.6

Missy forgive me because I was wrong. Fully expected garbage but girl delivered one banger after another. Mad respect.

Im kinda into hip hop ig

Such a classic album. Got a little repetitive in the middle but easily a 4.5

nije mi se sacuvaoo revieeew neee, nema veze, dobar album, dobar rep, svidja mi se sto prica sa publikom deluje intimnije

4.5 Full of hits

I prefer this to most other rap from this era.

Wow. There is some crazy genius talent here, both the rapping and the production. I may never be a real rap fan, but I can appreciate the delivery, the sway, the creativity on this record. The backward rapping on "Work It" is just awesome.

I really liked this, despite the Jay-Z drop in

She's awesome

so fucking good from one of the greats

Great album. Missy slaps

Really enjoyed surprisingly

yes. she sings, she raps, and her interludes show her depth as an artist and individual. a CLASSIC and keeps me engaged throughout

Did I just get Missy Elliott for my final album? Okay. Not too much to say that she doesn’t say for herself, but it’s a fun album with a ridiculous number of hooks per minute.

A lot of fun actually

Surprisingly good record. I remember when it came out and it was massive, but I never listened to it. Could do without the rambling sections but otherwise cracking

Some classics on there

Not sure why but this unexpectedly delighted me

Missy is considered one of the best female rapper of all time. This album has her talent on display, smart meaningful lyrics, funky and groovy beats, quick raps and flows, and a pretty good voice and tone. Insane production and beats, the combination of hip hop and R&B here is insane, amazing club music too and probably paved the way for many female MCs, and the fact that she managed to get the names of Bill Gates and Donald Trump in there is insane. I love the little before and after speeches. She often also adds heartfelt messages to channel the roots of hip hop and celebrate the lives of those that we lost over the years that left too soon, from Biggie, Tupac, Aaliyah, Big Pun to Left Eye. In a way this album is a memorial for all of these acts, these people who were at the top of their craft. This album's almost 24 years old and it still sounds so fresh and new! Songs from this album are still trending on social media to this day, mainly Work it. This album is packed with features from all of the biggest names in the scene with references to popular media and figures who you would hear about at the time. Overall very influential album, my favourite tracks are Into/Get To The Floor, Bring The Pain, Gossip Folks, Work It, Back In The Day, Funky Fresh Dressed, Slide, Ain't That Funky, Hot, Can You Hear Me,

Incredibly solid hip-hop album.

When Missy Elliott and Timbaland join forces it just works for me.

Second Missy album to come up, my first time listen, and I really dug this one. Could I do without the narration/commentary? Sure. But Missy's flow is impeccable as always, the production and guests are solid. Overall a pretty good balance of hip-hop and pop sensibilities, featuring her biggest hit and a certified capital-B banger, with plenty of interesting deeper cuts and no real duds IMO.

I was critical when her debut album made the list because I was aware that she had produced much better material since. Now you've gone and redeemed yourself with this one that unequivocally slaps.

The line about Bill Gates and Donald Trumo not fighting didn't age well.

Very very good! Somehow this album didn't land on my radar when it first came out, but it's powerhouse work. In terms of musical complexity, it reminds me Beyonce's recent work, although the lyrics definitely have a lot less gravity. The elephant noise in place of the lyric "dick" is one of those things that I (like undoubtedly many others) will remember forever.

I quite liked this. Have listened to 'work it' a million times, but enjoyed a lot of the rest of it as well.

3.75* Round up to 4.

The grooves! The grooves. Flip it and reverse it, the grooves persist.

This open intro is cold - never expected a DJT reference either. Go to the Floor - seems like a clear inspo for some Nicki tracks. Bring the Pain - that conversational back and forth that we associate with Missy is a nice interlude, especially before her solo verse. It feels like the album is coming to a close with that Beyoncé song but then it picks right back up with Slide. Hot falls short lyrically compared to the rest of the album. Could’ve done without it on the album and it wouldn’t have been missed.

Loved it. Very distinctive voice

On aikansa parhaimpia hiphop kunnianosoituksia, absoluuttinen massiivinen järkäle. Aikansa parhaat vierailijat, Methodman yks kaikkien aikojen parhaita.

This might be the most mid 2000s record ive ever heard but It just rules. Its so refreshing to hear a feminine voice who also raps. Growing up with Nikki it seemed like girls needed to sound tough and hard and masculine to make it. Maybe im just wrong but thats always what i saw. Its different now but as someone who prefers a feminine vocal usually it hits the spot. My biggest gripe is its a little crass or gross at times. Not that male rappers aren't 10 times more so. But some of the nastier tracks do loose me some. I dont know who produced this but the beat selection is top notch for real. Everything bumps. I was not expecting to like this nearly as much as I did but im happy as hell for it.

I knew this would be a fun album and Missy didn’t disappoint.

I fully expected to hate this one but what a surprise! Actually a very catchy album. Yes, dated - but its fun and also touches on some issues 4 ⭐️

First of all: The Features on this Album are insane Second of all great Album, from a great US Hip Hop Time, even if Missy mentions on this album that back in the days things were better :D Third of all: It would be 5 Stars but this constant mention of "exclusive" did bother me.

It was only the second hip hop album I have listened to all the way through. I enjoyed it immensely. I thought it had some danceable grooves, I thought it had an interesting point of view. I thought she was funny and overall, I just had a good time listeneing to iit.

A mi me gustan mucho más la apertura con Go to the floor y Bring the Pain o los temazos Play That Beat y Back in the day (con Jay-z) que los sencillos Gossip Folks o Work it, pero estos tuvieron mucha mejor suerte. Especial es Pussycat con Janet Jackson y Lil' Kim o Nothing Out There for Me con Beyoncé, heredando lo que Laurynn Hill no quiso seguir haciendo. También Can You Hear Me un tema de la vieja escuela con las TLC. Imprescindible.

Ok at the start of it I was having flashbacks to early 00's hip hop. Then the entire album clicked for me. I remembered how much I enjoyed Elliott. At some point in my life I forgot about an entire era of music. Seriously this album is good give it a listen and try not to want to dance.

Daddy like. I do think it’s worth mentioning that producers of digital media who tag hip hop skits onto the beginning or end of the music tracks will all burn in hell.

Gossip folks, bring the pain, work it and pussycat were stand out songs. Good album!

Wisdom

It's a 4.5, but I'm rounding down for the interstitial talking. The remnants of 90's hip hop sketch culture were still hanging on at this point.

I liked this album a lot. Some real processing that I think was authentic. I'm also assuming that at this time, missy making an album like this was impossibly difficult. Musically it's a three -- a few sick beats, but mostly the sound of the times. Message wise a four.

Veldig teit å forklare hva albumtittelten betyr i introen. Show dont tell! Men generelt et jævlig kult album.

FAVO: Gossip Folks, Work It, Back in the day

Good tunes thx !

this album kicks ass. the flow goes hard, missy just rips through the whole thing. absolute command of the music and what she wants to do. some catchy hooks in there as well.

Danceable.

"You don't see Bill Gates and Donald Trump arguin' with each other 'cause both of 'em got paper and they got better shit to do" as an album opener probably didn't age super well but the songs are bangers.

A couple of tracks didn't sit well with - the Beyonce one for starters, I can't stand her or her shitty music. On the whole though, this was a really good album.

I absolutely love Missy’s creativity, skills, and vital contribution to hiphop culture. She’s a goat. This album’s harder tracks are absolutely fire. The album is brought down a star for me by the r’n’B she includes, confusing mash of feminism and regressive lyrics like wanting to cook and clean for a man, and interstitials that sound too off-the-cuff for posterity.

Some hits some missy..s

I do think this is like the third best missy album, but i do kinda think it works so well bcuz Timbaland is really uninhibited... the production on this album is awesome haha

This album is 🔥🔥🔥🔥

Missy Elliott is somewhat underrated as a songwriter. She raps freely about some of the more typical things you might expect: money, clout, and sexuality. But there's also a sharp sense of humor lacing her music, which both undercuts and highlights the bragadoccio in interesting ways.

This is funky and fun

ti esrever dna ti pilf ,nwod gniht ym tuP! Really loved this--somehow had never heard it before. SO many great featured artists.

Less wide ranging than some of her earlier work, she still combines innovative sounds with clever, sometimes funny lyrics

Not my genre but pretty good stuff. Lovely grooves and very positive feminine take on rap/hip hop/rnb. Preferable , especially in this context to some of the other derivative stuff from heavier rock or indie genres. Also held together well as an album. Not my taste but v listenable and some great playing/ sampling too.

Very good, labai patiko intarpai, kur ji toesiog šnekėdavo ir pasakodavo.

I quite enjoyed this one. The collabs were good, I liked the samples, and the whole thing just kinda flowed really well. I was listening to Work It immediately after learning that Charlie Kirk was killed. One of my main complaints is the "Missy Elliott exclusive" bite at the beginning of some of the songs is dumb haha.

This record is rad. I love how it is just full on bonafied rap music. Its rough and raw, but killer beats. Fun lyrics and rhymes. There's a lot of attitude and feeling with this record. I love all of the guest contributors on this one as well. It also ages really well. It doesn't feel too 90s or too 2000s. Obviously, there are strong elements of that but production is really good. It slapped then, and its slaps now. I had a blast with this one today.

such a good album from the most underrated mc of our time we love you missy gossip folks is a classic

Excellent listen. Rhythmic and catchy beats. Missy is a master of flow, cadence, style. Must listen #204.

The first time I heard this album was on a long, long road trip from Dallas to Los Angeles with my dear friend Anthony (rest in peace big guy). I can't remember everything, or even all that much we listened to on the 24-hour road trip but I do remember this. It was Ant's suggestion, I wasn't too excited about it but I had to concede I was wrong to judge. This is a fantastic album. It's the epitome of Old School, combining Missy's irrepressible attitude and vocals with Timbaland driving the beats and samples to create a patchwork of both progressive and retrospective grooves.

I’m torn between a 3 and a 4. Hip-hop in particular is a genre that shifts so much over time so when you return to the past it can’t help but sound dated. There’s a lot of songs that I think went harder back in the day, but I’m not feeling the punch on like half the album. Few general bops for sure, shout to Nothing Out There For Me in particular. Big names dropping features as well. The star is obviously Work It. And I think it could be argued to be a 3 without that megahit, so I’ll go with a 4 because that song still slaps to this day, which to my earlier point of hip-hop suffering from recent bias, is even more impressive in that light.

This album rocks. Missy is super smooth, her flow is tight, and each song keeps this album feeling fresh. There’s a lot to like on this. Not to mention that Work It is on this album, and is an all time great Great features, with Method Man, Ludacris, and Jay Z too. All in all, really had a blast.

i enjoyed this. for sure

Amazing production. This is Missy and Timberland at their peak. Missy is hard to pin down- she's a top tier MC, however you slice it. This takes me back to a fun time.

Her flow on go to the floor goes hard. Gossip folks i know that kid ad lib apparently from double dutch bus by frankie smith. Damn paul revere shout out? If I had a nickel… “ But they use to call me fatty 'til I got with Puff Daddy” is so funny in retrospec

This is an amazing and original album. The unique sound is infectious. Storytelling keeps the listener involved. The guests add color. Songs have a dope beat but are so unique and colorful. Great album.

Really good yet underrated album. Has to be in talks of best female rap album ever

Work It is a classic but there were some great songs on here like Slide and Gossip Folks. Production is great with unique beats that have such a unique style.

Filthy good.

I was going to let this Slide, but this album is Hot! Play That Beat!

love the radio edit commentary

Pretty much every song is amazing Fav song: Not sure, maybe Bring the Pain?

Just really great.

I was not expecting to like this album as much as I did. To be honest, the worst track to me was “Work it” - probably because of the many times I was forced to listen to it by the then existing monoculture. I’m not going to be deep here, it’s a cool album.

This really hit hard, I was grooving like crazy today. Missy doesn't miss, great lyrics, vocal performance, the guest spots were fire...a lot to love on this one!

This grew on me nicely. Some nice old school vibes, great production, varied songwriting.
