Don't know much about Jazz. It was nice but it felt like I already heard it.
It’s nice to have a jazz album where the players have equal billing in the mix. That being said, nothing gets above ‘pleasant’. You’re willing the bass player on in his solo bits, but it just doesn’t hit that hard.
:OOOOOOOOOOO JAZZ?! FUCK YEA its chill I would love to be in a speakeasy with good company and a cocktail with this live. but I am editing excel sheets doing the most boring shit in the world. good music but day to day forgettable and wont ever listen to this again.
It's jazz .okay for the morning
I'm not really a jazz connoisseur, but some of the albums on this list have really stood out to me in a good way. This isn't one of them, but it's not bad. Just average jazz and decent, enjoyable background music.
This isn't bad--the playing of all 3 is in fact stunning--but it does little to convince me that Evans is among the greats. There's beauty here, but also a lot of monotony. My general aversion to Evans has always been a lack of feeling or soul and this is, to my ears, painfully apparent here too. Better as a backing musician than a band leader.
This was cool. That's about it. Nothing like exceptionally moving about it but could be really good background study music. Highlights: Alice in Wonderland
Dinner music
Album 27/1001. Listened 4/15/2026. I'm not a huge jazz fan, but I liked this one. I could put it on and enjoy it in the background, but honestly it's not something I'd reach for on a regular basis.
Very enjoyable.
It's jazz. You either like it, or you don't understand it. I fall firmly in the latter. Appreciate the musicality, but it doesn't stick with me. Someday I'll be sophisticated enough to appreciate it.
Chill jazz
This was very pleasant and relaxing to listen to, but I don't see myself coming back to listen to this album again, like I would other jazz albums.
Sounds like Jazz. Jazz is fine, I appreciate their talent, but I'm rarely in the mood for it.
I consider myself a “jazz” person but this album just felt a little boring. There’s no questioning the musicianship of everyone playing, everything was cohesive but it didn’t feel very moving. Of course, I’m more influenced by the big band era so I can understand my lack of interest while listening. I think this will be one I have to return to with a more mature ear and a better mood. Happy listening!
Chill piano album
Enjoyed this! The piano was excellent.
it was great, however for me personally intense jazz like this is good when it's really diverse one after another. if it's just a queue of songs that sound well enough similar and aren't really that different from one another, it's hard to listen to more than 3 pieces like this
I honestly don't feel qualified to give any sort of judgment on a jazz record. It's just not a style of music that I listen to much or know anything about. I enjoy it as background music, but my lack of knowledge about musical composition really makes me unqualified to know what's good or not good. My research on this album says that its considered the greatest live jazz recordings of all time, so I'll go with that!
Good background music for work.
2.5 stars Once again I’m not sure exactly how to judge jazz. I think I’ve determined that I do enjoy jazz trios with piano, like Charlie Brown type of thing. That’s what this was. I like this type of live record. Not overlong and full of unnecessary crap, just a presentation of the music. Jazz kind of always feels live so this is no different. Anyway this could be study music, but I don’t know that I would specifically seek this out for that over a handful of other jazz records that I have more familiarity with.
I enjoyed this but maybe moreso for the context of my saturday morning than the album itself. It was definitely good and my helped to heal some existing traumas regarding jazz piano but not something i’ll be revisiting outside of situations where i need background sounds.
Nice jazz background music if you just want something playing
Great piano music.
It's jazz alright. Kinda zoned out to it while playing Balatro. I guess that's what it's for?
Bill Evans?! Just as this album started, a flash snowstorm created the perfect accompanying atmosphere to what is a very relaxing and enjoyable record. This is like a warm mug on a frigid day. I usually criticize audiences for being overly boisterous on live records, but this audience needs to have more confidence in themselves. This record seems to have emanated from the gathering of the severely socially anxious, or the recently anesthetized. The clapping had a slowness to it that makes me think it was more likely to be the latter. I wanted a little bit more from this, but something tells me I will find that with repeated listens. 3.5 HIGHLIGHTS: Ivories tickled successfully
At first I was bored and then I really got into it. Still not wowing me but I definitely enjoyed it and would come back to in the future if that’s what I’m in the mood for.
Yeah, nice bit of business
Decent listen.
something id listen to if i wasnt listening to it just to listen to it aka background noise..
Favorite track(s): Gloria's Step, My Man's Gone Now
I don’t really know what to say about this other than that it’s very pleasant jazz. If and album elicits such a lukewarm response what do you even do with it. Fine I guess!
THE classic live jazz album - sounds exactly like I expected. Musicianship is excellent across the board, but the bass player is next level.
Ah, man.
Solid jazz jam.
Perfect for studying to.
In a world of so many jazz albums, this one failed to leave much of an impression upon me.
Nice vibe, played while reading
Enjoyable but not earth-shattering.
Perfect work/study background music. The only track that really caught my attention was Alice in Wonderland.
It's great for what it is, and the recording quality is outstanding (I love some good ambient crowd noise), but just not something that really got me.
This was too jazzy and yet not jazzy enough. Definitely wasn’t expecting the fantastic Alice I wonderland!
Perfectly lovely, I now know what to put on at my next dinner party.
The softest of jazz
it's good background music, but I dont think I can pinpoint anything great about it
Sad jazz played in a happy room.
If I’m gonna listen to 1950s jazz Dave Brubeck is right there and so is Miles Davis.
Meh
It's jazz. There is clapping involved. It's fine.
favorites: solar; alice in wonderland;
Not my cup of tea
Chill but meandering. Definitely tight and in sync but didn't really go anywhere, especially with multiple takes of the same song. The most bass solo I have ever heard, which was cool but a lot. Enjoyable as total background music, but hard to focus on. Highlights: Bass going crazy
It kinda faded into the background at times, but I still enjoyed it.
Solid jazz album filthy bass work. RIP
Pleasant jazz album, like the rest i’ve heard so far. I’m not good at reviewing jazz because it all blends together to me, i guess i don’t have the music theory knowledge to appreciate what it’s doing on a technical level. Sounds good though.
5/10 - I don’t get jazz. Maybe I’ll come around with exposure or maybe I don’t appreciate the difficulty because I haven’t played an instrument. Maybe I am like those people who never played soccer and don’t understand that a 1-0 game can be incredibly exciting or don’t get why the entire Juventus stadium stood and applauded when R7 nailed that bicycle kick. Might be a me thing.
A perfect example of a jazz trio - exactly what I'd reach for if the mood called for it. My issue is, my mood so very rarely calls for this. If I'm sitting there watching these guys, then yes, I'm all for it. But too many other times I'll pass this over for something else. That doesn't make it bad in any way, just...not what I'm going to reach for.
I've had a few goes at getting into jazz, but they've all failed, I just don't enjoy it. So I was happy to find that this is... pleasant. Not something I'd describe as good, or necessary, but nice background music. Even the audience seems to treat it that way - there's a lot of background chatter as people largely treat this as above average aural wallpaper
extremely pleasing but also I can't track the melodies/scales Evans is working with
This was pretty and chill. I liked that it was centered around a piano and bass. But ultimately it felt like hotel bar music. I enjoyed listening but nothing made a lasting impression other than it was a nice vibe
This is good smoky lounge music, but it's more of a vibe/background music than something I feel a connection to. It also all sounded very similar, which got a little boring. Alice in Wonderland had some cool moments.
Good brassless Jazz Album, the elevator music prejudice unfortunately shines very much in this, even tho it's got some really interesting bass lines. Overall not the absolute best Jazz Album i have ever heard.
I think jazz is a genre best experienced live. You can listen to jazz records and find enjoyment, but being in person, devoting your full attention to the music, and seeing top tier musicians performing at a high level is an experience I’d encourage everyone to try, even if you think you don’t like jazz. While these are obviously very talented musicians, I can’t say this album really grabbed me. If I was in the audience for this performance I think I would’ve loved it, but listening to it in my apartment, it was pleasant but never really grabbed me. That’s probably a character deficiency though.
If you like piano jazz you’ll probably like this
Taffeljazz.
Chille greier. En herlig liten søndags/lese/jobbeplate.
This definitely sits closer to the avant-garde end of the jazz spectrum, more free and formless than jazz I’d usually say I’m a fan of. Not to say it was bad, far from it. I just reckon it’s something I’d prefer to see live, as it feels like the kind of music that really gains from the space in which it’s performed.
Didn’t care for this jazz album quite as much as the others on the list.
These songs are so cool, they use all the notes in every song. Jokes aside, these are mostly vibe performances. There is a feeling of chaos because right away on the opening track each band member is improvising at the same time in different time signatures. Then the bass player Scott LaFaro gets his own improv solo while Bill chords out the background using 7ths, 9ths, 11ths, minor mixolydian 4ths, you name it. But the whole is greater than the sum of the parts, so if you can get past the dissonance and dig the feel it works - kind of like a magic eye poster.
A nice album. The live recordings make it very immersive because one can hear the people in the background talking such is really cool
Easy listening jazz
Another jazz album that came and went without making much of an impression
Back-to-back jazz albums except this one is live and not a studio one. The thing that stood out to me the most is the bass playing, which is nothing short of phenomenal, my favourite bass playing is on "My Man's Gone Now." The live album seems a bit rigid without any banter or talking, all there is just clapping, which with a live album I want a bit more than that, frankly. Solid album though. Highlight Song/s: "My Man's Gone Now" and "Alice In Wonderland"
Good background music
Ok, but this didn't set me alight. Some bits were cool enough.
210/1089 a well composed and played relaxing jazz set. 54/100
Yea that was Sunday
As a lifelong fan of Peanuts comics and animated specials, I heard similarities to Vince Guaraldi, but with stronger bass. This is an easy listen.
A million perfectly played notes. A fine example of the genre which encompasses smoky bar piano jazz. Have to say though I was only dimly aware of its completion when Spotify started playing other jazz albums.
The guy on piano is pretty good.
Not so much into jazz.. this was ok … good background music.
Very technically skilled. I do find myself zoning out or getting distracted. I probably don't have enough music skill to hear a lot of the complexity going on here. I tend to like hotter jazz better.
Jazz music is best experienced live
This was an interesting change of pace. I felt like I was in a speakeasy, having polite conversation with other socialites. Overall, a pretty good listening experience, but nothing too exciting.
Loved
Nice jazz album but not anything stellar to bring me back for a serious listen.
Jazzy jazz
Cheguei dende o puro descoñecemento e... desfrutei bastante co disco.
A charming album. Maybe Sunday at the Village Vanguard runs long--not in length per say, but rather in repetitiveness--but it was quite good regardless. This jazz can be considered common, but not simple, and the Bill Evans Trio does this style of jazz extremely well. I think you could even claim that this trio performs so well they make it look easy and uninteresting.
I don't typically go for music like this unless I'm seeking it played live or seeking a specific vibe. It was a slow burn, but ultimately this album ended up winning me over a bit! It was delightfully relaxing. The interplay here between piano and bass is what really makes this album fun.
Welcome to Jazz Club. However, I never feel smart enough for Jazz. Like going to a museum and even though you enjoyed the visit, you spent a lot of time looking at the other visitors and thinking "Are they understanding this better than me?" Still, this doo-be-dooed, rat-a-tat-tatted and plinkity-plonked with the best of them.
Like playing Transport Tycoon but not as catchy
Lovely stuff
Kinda Jazz I fuck with Don't know how to assign a fave track tho
Smooth lounge jazz. 3.5/5
Not something I would typically listen to, but this was good. Jazz that flows and is easy to multitask with in the background.
Good. ★★★
Always a fan of a solid jazz record.
First Listen; 3.5; Easy and enjoyable listening. Interesting enough that it doesn't blend completely into the background.
Good but not for me
It’s a jazz album. Chill background music. Not much for me to compare it too so I’ll give it a neutral score.
Fine background music
A live jazz album would never have been something I would have gravitated towards. I listened to it as background and enjoyed the experience, it was comforting and easy. Not mad about it but would only listen to again as a background dinner music kind of vibe
3.5
Im discovering morning jazz is the way to go. Enjoyed what I heard but I feel like I don't quite have th ear to appreciate what I'm hearing -- all the songs sound kinda the same. Nonetheless enjoyable step on my jazz journey l (the big JJ)
I enjoyed listening to this. It went on for a really long time. Ultimately background music to me, unless you were actually there in which case it would probably be way more fun.
not my favourite jazz record but pretty enjoyable
the young man on the bass was going absolutely crazy. got to respect it. was a nice listen but i don’t think i’m sophisticated enough to have much of an opinion on piano jazz
Heres the thing with being subjected to so much jazz through my time on the list, it can fit a certain vibe, as background music when I don’t have my critical head on I get it a bit more but still I’d never choose it. The list has also showed me the same with pretty much all music without lyrics.
Not for me. Sounds the same all the time
Pretty boring. Don’t get jazz. Yet.
You, an intellectual : mmm yes jazz. Me, a guy : why are they playing different songs. Do they not like each other??? Very good background music.
It's alright. Probably great for the jazz lovers out there, but this style always comes off as something I'd eat dinner too and nothing else. No real excitement in the bones and no feeling of wanting to come back to it. 2.5/3
It's good, certainly. Background music for me. The performance is really well done. I'm not the biggest jazz fan but it's obvious that these musicians are experts of their craft. I don't like the choice to put 2 of the 3 instruments on the left side of the stereo image, the drums should obviously be right in the middle. I'm not gonna knock it too much for that but it's certainly something that takes away. It's really good for jazz. I won't put it on myself, but I wouldn't mind if this was on in a restaurant. 3.4/5
I've listened to quite a lot of Bill Evans, but this recording was nearly ruined for me after the Complete Vanguard recordings were so hotly recommended to me as a new jazz listener. Damn, nobody needs 2.5 hours of this, with three takes of individual songs. I think this is the first time I've actually listened to the original curated album release - so I'm glad for the opportunity. Unfortunately, Bill Evans always seems to have very little of the things I love about jazz. The energy is subdued. The technical control and skill is there, but there's nothing exciting to me, and it makes me feel very little apart from mild appreciation. So many jazz albums of the 1950s and 60s get me fired up on life, but this isn't one of them. It's also a style of jazz where I can't see a live album being the natural format. There are definitely studio records from Bill Evans that I prefer. Overall, I respect this and I will gladly revisit it sometime, but currently I'm lukewarm. 3.5*
jazz
It was really good, for the genre. I struggle with jazz so much but I didn’t hate it
Pleasant jazz in an intimate environment. I've attended such events before. What is special about this album? 3/5
Honestly loved it!! Would’ve never found this trio without this app and prob will listen again!
nice sounds
Me gustó.
It's fine, pretty generic as far as jazz goes but not unpleasant at all. Also it's cool I can listen to jazz from 1961, it's less cool that I can listen to people's conversations from 1961 in the background
Great jazz piano album. I think I prefer Dave Brubeck or Vince Guaraldi, but this was good. I was surprised by the bass playing.
Jazz is an unfamiliar genre for me but I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this during breakfast. The fact that it's recorded live is impressive. I like to imagine the collaboration between the musicians and what the atmosphere must have been like in 1961. I definitely need to explore more in the genre
Good smooth vibes. Pretty slow overall without changes in tempo. Nice for dinner music.
Like sitting in airport lounge waiting for your twin prop plane to take you Kenosha, Wisconsin. There's some sweet soloing, and for the dreaded Kool Jazz, I actually enjoyed it.
5 - AVERAGE
Jazz never has and never will be for me.
Not my thing, would normally love to see it live but not as fussed here.
Not for me
Just instrumental, wouldn’t say it’s something that everyone has to listen to
GOING IN: Quite hopeful LISTENED WHILE: having breakfast FAMILIARITY: New to me SKIP RATE: Played it straight through REPLAY VALUE: Might come back to it DISCOVERY CURVE: Needed another go ALBUM ARC: Pretty even, consistent VERDICT: Fair enough BODY'S VERDICT: Toe tapping situation My Rating: 2.5 Needs another listen.
𝘚𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘢𝘺 𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘝𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘢𝘨𝘦 𝘝𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘶𝘢𝘳𝘥 is a beautifully intimate live document, but its age shows in the recording quality, and the trio format naturally leaves a lot of open space. The interplay between piano, bass and drums is subtle and refined, yet for someone who gravitates toward jazz with horns, the absence of saxophone or trumpet can make the music feel a bit too soft or restrained. It’s an important performance and a graceful listen, just not fully engaging if piano-trio jazz doesn’t connect on a deeper level.
Not usually into this genre. Didn’t mind it. Would probably be good background music.
Not really my thing but seems good
Ok, feels like there is just too much going on at times and its for the negative.
I liked each of these songs up until the bass solos. They weren’t poorly played, I just feel like the upright bass sounds bad on its own.
Jazz brunch
This should be fun
Solar is probably my favorite. Had no idea jazz guys liked herion so much
meh
Very good. This is the jazz I like. High 3s.
3.2
Like most jazz albums set to fancy restaurants but this time with a live audience.
calm, elevator/hotel lobby type beat, not really my style
By golly it’s jazz. Some of the jazziest jazz I’ve ever heard. I’m all jazzed out. I don’t think I can give any jazz album higher than a 3 on principle at this point.
Good stuff. I still know next to nothing about jazz and so I feel like a lot of this is lost on me, but fortunately this came up right around Christmas so like three separate times I queued it up behind the Vince Guaraldi Trio's Charlie Brown Christmas album and that worked out quite nicely. No songs in particular stood out, definitely felt like the kind of album that's meant to just be put on and establish a mood for the whole runtime. 7/10, three stars.
Smooth Piano Jazz, not my normal thing, good background/ cocktail party music.
3. You wake up put on this album, go to wash your face, make coffee and put some make up on to the sound of piano and drums. No words, no loud noises, but a peaceful morning started with jazz.
Schweet jazz
A pretty nice album to listen to in the morning with a cup of coffee but jazz instrumental albums will never be actively sought by me.
not bad, but I'd really rather see a live jazz performance than listen to one on headphones
This is not for me. Non-brass jazz is not for me. It's clearly an amazing performance, but it's also long and winding. I liked the idea and back story of this more than I liked the actual recording.
This was really nice but it became quite background musicky. Idk I didn’t hate it but I just kinda tuned it out after a while
Listened on headphones. Bass in the left ear, piano in the right. Very unnatural. I couldn't focus properly.
Held my attention longer than this sort of thing usually does, the constant bass noodling just got too much at some point. Not really my thing.
Good jazz piano. Not exactly what I want but very pleasant
Jazz
Not my favorite
This is a fun album - insane chemistry between the band, the bassist is the standout and sad to hear that he passed so young, so soon after this show.
Sounds like Phoenix Wright music
Live Jazz is neat background music I suppose. Best song: Can't really tell the difference between them
I don't really feel I can accurately rate jazz. I'd never heard of this man before but apparently he was Miles Davis's pianist. It's all really great musically and stuff.
Sehr schön, heftige Skills an allen Instrumenten.
Relaxing, sedative, calming and smooth music. Ideal for background
I like Bill Evans as a jazz pianist and he does a good job here. From research, it's clear to me that this release focuses on bassist Scott LaFaro who passed away shortly after its recording. The result is something that more highlights his playing than the trio itself. The opener and closer (the best songs here) are ones he wrote and the rest feature extensive bass solos. It's cool for a laid-back vibe, but not really something I would come back to when I want some live jazz. I guess I'm used to more chaos or just more in general when it comes to jazz. Stripping it down is good, but I guess maybe I wanted a little more to do with the piano more than the bass. It's still a fine record nonetheless (6/10, 3/5 on this scale)
nice background music for a classy restaurant or cafe - but I don't own a restaurant or cafe, let alone a classy one. highlight: let's say "alice in wonderland."
Instrumental, I rather like it
I fear jazz. I fear the lack of boundaries.
Smooth, relaxing jazz. This album is poorly timed though - I am SWAMPED with work and can't RELAX.
3.5/5 Zoned out to this at work. Not sure if that's good or bad. Definitely puts you in place of focus. But can also feel like dinner music at a restaurant. Also not sure if I'm sophisticated enough to critique jazz.
Don’t love live albums
Pretty loungey jazz, it didn't feel super adventurous but it wasn't boring either. Just a calm listen with a lot of bass solos
Mukavan leppoista kahvilamusiikkia.
Jee jatsia. Vähän liikaa tiluttelua, mut ihan jees tunnelma kun astiat kilisee ja porukka juttelee mukavia samalla kun basisti vääntää jotain maailmanlopun sooloa.
Not my genre, but good music
Nice but not outstanding
nice one for a sunday morning
Listens: 1.5 Standout tracks: Alice In Wonderland This album was pleasant enough. Nice background music or something you throw on while cooking or eating dinner. No complaints. One of the tracks, I think Alice In Wonderland, reminds me of the end theme song of The Boondocks. Could have been a sample or inspiration.
I thought it was OK. It my favorite jazz we’ve heard.
It was pleasant, but I felt like it was an hour of the same thing over and over with little to grab onto. Good working, or setting the mood at a coffeee shop on a rainy day, but no other spin case for me.
Deliciously smooth, but too slow for a Monday afternoon. Maybe I don't get jazz but the different takes were bugging me because they were a bit repetitive. Maybe re-listen to this one on a more chill day
Alice In Wonderland.
Instrumental jazz. It’s great, not my cup of tea at this point.
Possibly feeling a bit of jazz fatigue… I love Evans’ work as part of a broader ensemble but did feel having his piano work as a focus did not connect with me in the same way.
This started off really promising, thought it was going to build into something dynamic but it just didn’t really go…anywhere? Found it to be be quite soporific by the end. Probably bears a repeated listen but this feels more like background music to a cocktail party rather than something to be listened to front and centre.
Good background noise.
Special
It's lounge jazz with good piano and bass. Good mood music to throw some darts to! Not much else really to be said. If you're after smooth mood music with good piano and bass, chuck this on. Best songs: None really stand out, its basically good background music
That's some smooooooth Jazz right there.
An hour of jazz is too much jazz for me. No doubt this is important is music history but I have simple tastes and I like lyrics to go with my melody
Best Song: Jade Visions Phew, I was scared we weren't going to get more jazz! It falls as the rest, it isn't my thing but I respect it and I listened to it. I am not a musician so I have no way to competently say it was well done or poorly done. All I can really say is it isn't my thing so I had no real reaction to it one way or another. 3/5.
Rozumiem go intelektualnie, ale nie czuję go emocjonalnie. To pewnie moja wina. 6/10.
Felt like they were playing jazz on amphetamines--fast tempo. I liked the interplay between the piano and the drums.
Got this album when I was driving in the rain. Perfection for the moment.
really clueless about jazz but it sounds smooth and great for focus music. Tracks to Track: Gloria's Step
I used to not like jazz. I still don't, but i used to too. I can appreciate the artistry and the talent. There were a few nice moments on here, the musicians are great for sure, and the murmurs of the audience make the recording feel present and intimate but im not really moved by this style of jazz. My rating reflects my appreciation of the music but also my lukewarm enthusiasm for it.
Pre: know Bill Evans plays jazz piano but that's it Post: nice chill jazz for the most part , good to play on a rainy day
Like a relaxing, expensive dinner
There’s jazz that I like to listen to, jazz that I am fine if it’s playing but don’t particularly like to listen to, and jazz that I don’t like. This is the second one. Also maybe that’s my scale for music generally and not just jazz? I will say this though, that bass player was playing like it was his last week on earth.
This album is undoubtedly very pretty, and the musicianship is fantastic. I love some good bass, and the piano playing was gorgeous. However, I would only choose to throw this on for background music not to just listen to for the fun of it. 3 stars for the talent though.
Felt like early morning at a coffee shop. You’re sitting at an outside table with the sun warming your skin, slowly waking up. Sipping your espresso and nibbling on your shortbread cookie (made in-house of course), you watch the people emerging from their homes and setting out on their days while listening to the lively and energetic Bill Evans Trio playing on the coffee shop speakers. The jazz mixes with the bustle of the street like cream mixes with coffee—taking something wonderful and making it just a little better.
Great jazz performance
Not my type of music, maybe if i drink a beer in a jazz club, it would be fine.
Top tier elevator music right here.
Jupp, Jazz. Gediegen und ziellos.
The jazziest jazz to ever jazz
Short, sweet and very pleasant to listen to, a background album, but every song sounds complete, full and with reason. Will keep it in rotation.
Easy to slip into, like fireplace jazz. But if you listen a little closer and let yourself drift without getting lost, you start hearing the progressions, and behind the great Bill Evans, there are the loose yet free bass lines (I’m just discovering the amazing Scott LaFaro, who sadly died at only 25 not long after this live set), and a very delicate drumming. There is a real magical chemistry between the 3 musicians, a chemistry where each of them can shine. It’s also live, and the recording is stunningly well captured. Pure joy … as long as you’re in the right mood for this type of very smooth jazz.
Pleasant/10
This was a good background jazz listen, but nothing mind-blowing IMO. Three stars.
I am feeling like this album should be named "Scott LaFaro Plays Bass featuring the Bill Evans Trio." LaFaro really goes off playing bass on this one. He's just all over this recording and his bass is so prevalent on each track. This is fine jazz. It makes me feel like I am at a fancy restaurant staring at a 6 oz steak that cost $59.99 and I had to pay $11 extra for some mashed potatoes to go with it. So if that's the vibe Bill Evans is going for her then he definitely hit the mark. This is good background music. As I have been saying a few times on here, I am bad with jazz and don't understand what is and isn't very good when it comes to jazz. I have preferred other jazz albums on this album listing.
Bill Evans. Scott LaFaro, & Paul Motion! Awesome playing great straight ahead jazz!
good! i just don't understand jazz enough to maybe appreciate it. nice bg music.
Enjoyed this, it reminded me of going to jazz clubs in New York with my uncle. Reading about the album I was saddened by the tragic death of Scott LaFaro.
86/1001 Bill Evans Trio - Sunday at the Village Vanguard Heard before? ❎ Revisit? ✅ The Trio are undoubtedly tight when it comes to this performance and the interaction between all the instruments make this an interesting listen for me. It may fall into background music at times, but I genuinely had a good time with this.
Bill Evans and his Trio are amazing musicians, and this is a great change from all of the depressing goth I've been listening to on this project. But, it's a little TOO smooth for my tastes. Nothing really stands out between the different songs, and even less stands out between the different takes. I'm a fan of jazz, and of Bill Evans, but this could have been better, I think.
Jazz
When I got given my 3rd live album from the 60's out of 10 albums that I've got so far, I did initially roll my eyes. I enjoyed James Brown and Sam Cooke, but found the audience from each performance so distracting. Thankfully, this album doesn't suffer from at all, it's just a live Jazz performance. The songs are performed well and it's perfectly pleasant to listen to, though not something I'd go out of my way to listen to again. Whilst there are 10 tracks on this album, only 6 of them are made up of unique songs. Four of six the tracks have another version on this album and I don't know why they felt the need to include a take 1/take 2/take 3 of certain tracks, as there's very little difference, if any, between them.
No es mi estilo
Jazzzzz. Great playing but nothing captured me.
Nice album.
Fine but very forgettable.
Very pleasant. Still need to listen to more jazz.
Good background music while editing videos.
Das Album Sunday At The Village Vanguard wurde am 25. Juni 1961 im New Yorker Club Village Vanguard aufgenommen. Bekannte Songs wie Alice in Wonderland, My Man’s Gone Now oder All of You zeigen die lyrische Seite des Ensembles.
I don’t know much about jazz, but this seemed good? I wish I could play the piano. Listened a bit while driving through San Francisco and I felt like I was in a movie.
Orchestral good times
Jazz Bon jazz mais jazz quand meme
If you ain't in a trip, I don't wanna hear. If you like more ripping piano locks on the same style, check out Oscar Peterson Trio, hoping we get some of him one day. 6/10 because I wasn't completely locked in but I did become very productive.
Not my thing
Really liked alice in wonderland
Gloria’s Step //
The bassist is the best part. It's crazy to ever say "man, that bassist really stole the show," but here I am. Man, that bassist really stole the show. He's the one part of the album that stops it from being any lower, because it really is the definition of background jazz.
Pleasant but not something I’d listen to again
Again, I just didn't connect with it that much Edit Apr 2 2026: 2 --> 3. I do like jazz more now
Great background jazz for focusing, but interesting enough to hold your attention when you do dial in. Very approachable.
Great piano work, both intricate and relaxing. The interplay between the piano and bass make and intriguing listening experience, especially knowing that it would be their last performance together.
I normally enjoy Bill Evans Trio, but found this one to have a little more bass solos than I enjoy
Delightfully pleasant. Fancy hotel lobby music.
Surprisingly enjoyable considering I usually try and avoid jazz
Jazz innit
For maybe the first 20 mins I was having a great time, and filling a jazz void I've had for a while. Bill Evans has such deft and control that he gives just the right amount of emphasis through the song. I learned that this style bled into modern jazz so apparently he's a big deal. Then, as the album continued, it overstayed it's welcome. Once you get the first 20 mins, you've essentially heard the whole album. Special shout-out to Solar though, that was pretty good
Typical Jazz bullshit but listenable
More of a 2.75. Enjoyable but not at all memorable.
Jazz isn't my usual vibe, but I really enjoyed this. The songs started to run together a bit at the end, but overall a great time. Wish I could give it a 3.5 because 3 feels too low, but 4 also feels kinda high.
Real shit. Charlie Brown be bopping.
Nice but a little too mellow
A difficult listen, i can feel that the artists are in sync and talented but i struggled to enjoy listening to them play. Not a fan of the upright bass solo's, the energy was sucked out of every song when the bass became the prominent instrument in the mix
I lean positive on this album, but don't really know how to discuss it. I like the piano. I can tell there's really sweet jazz happening, and a lot of the time I am enjoying hearing said sweet jazz. The album is very long, and its hard to just listen to it in the background. There's a lot going on and it makes itself known too regularly to really let it slip pleasantly behind my work. I am not an experienced jazz-man, but I enjoyed listening to it. I just wish there was less of it, and that they'd do a little less sometimes. 6/10
Warning: Glass knock over jump scare! Quite an immersive live album that feels like you'd listen to it at a fine dining restaurant.
It was fun. Never thought I would enjoy just instrumental without vocals this much. My fav Gloria's Step
50/1001 :: Bill Evans Trio - Sunday At The Village Vanguard Heard before? ❌ Would I revisit? ✅ Rating: 6 Fav Tracks: Alice in Wonderland Listen before you die: Yeah 50 albums in and Sunday At The Village Vanguard is a great Sunday album. This type of jazz is what I’m most familiar with. Stand up thumping bass, freestyle piano dancing over the top and a rock solid drummer holding it down. I didn’t really get enough listens to decipher what the difference between the versions but I’m not sure it matters with this exercise. It’s all pretty good. This would be a good album to work too if you wanted music but also gets distracted easily (like I do).
Some brilliant interaction between bass and piano. I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would
This was a wonderful jazz record that was fun to listen to.
Fun, but it's not really much more than good background for me.
Very pleasant background music. 7/10
Not enough snakes.
It was alright, just not my style. I can appreciate the instrumentals though.
Very jazzy. Not sure it would be something I would put on, but if I was at a fancy club drinking fancy cocktails, I would expect to hear something similar.
RIP Scott Lofaro
Very much a Sunday album.
Not bad for some Charlie Brown ass music.
Can't believe there were chompers all the way back in 1961. Everyone tells me it's a post-COVID thing! Not a bad listen for a Friday morning. I could groove to this whist in a coffee shop or reading on the front porch.
Trevligt för vad det är!
Perfectly listenable background jazz while working. Aside from the fact the live nature (which wasn't obvious at first) and the subtle background conversation made me think someone was in the house about 3 times.
It was fine. Felt like I was listening to the same song for 40 minutes.
I found this album perfectly enjoyable but not as bold or exciting as other jazz albums.
Our noir detective goes back to the bar where he first met the femme fatale singing, seated atop the grand piano. She was right, her husband was trying to kill her. And now he sits alone in a corner booth, listening to the unaccompanied band on stage having failed to save her. He drowns in gin at the Village Vanguard.
7/10
It's not the kind of jazz that I'm familiar enough with to actually analyze critically, but it's pleasant enough. It probably requires a much deeper understanding to truly appreciate, but this was more engaging than other piano jazz works I've heard.
This is #day347 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… compared to some of the other jazz albums I've had so far, this one stands out. I think it has to do with the mix. Everything sounds almost pristine, as if the band's playing in your room. Little audience noise, except for occasional background chitchat, which makes the whole thing sound natural. That said, when it comes to this kind of jazz, I sort of belong to the "it's fine as background/restaurant kind of music" camp. I don't mind free or experimental jazz, which this isn't, but it doesn't mean this isn't good music either. It's just not something I'd return to. I must admit the album's quite long and begins to sound samey in the second half, though. I'm giving it a 3 out of 5. Looking forward to #day348.
Meh? It wasn't bad, but I didn't' find anything particularly special in it. Nothing that gripped me like, say, "Take Five". Competent, but kind of boring.
Nice easy listening but still all jazz. Man, these music critics love a jazz album.
Peak background music, I can imagine this being played in a high-grade restaurant with a cigar and a whiskey in my hand. Other than that, it's hard for me to judge this kind of stuff as it all kind of melds into one. Piano and drums were great, the bass at times felt like it was impeding on the composition a bit and I didn't like the stereo setup. Other than that, pretty good.
Enjoyable album, good background music.
I mean solid live jazz album. Top 1001? No 3/5
Overall, pretty alright jazzy album - it's great for when you're having dinner, but there are times when the drums try to look very cool and that is a bit too much, but apart from that - nothing really too bad.
