Reviews (page 9 of 12)
Easy soft jazz. Not life changing.
I guess I’m not a jazz person. Good for one listen but wouldn’t seek it out.
Smooth and buttery
Jazzy
I feel like I still have a way to go with Bill. A great performance but I wasn't listening in the right time. The trio is on fire, especially the bass.
Fantastisch lekker op de achtergrond!
This album feels instantly familiar, like slipping into a comfortable pair of shoes. It's that quintessential "elevator jazz" – the kind everyone instantly recognizes, the kind that's impossible to dislike. There's a reason these sounds are so enduring - It's undeniably smooth, catchy, and expertly played. While it might not seem ground-breaking, it's a chill and timeless representation of its genre.
Glad to be introduced to this album. It's certainly remarkable playing. It's easy to lose track of whether the piano or the bass are taking the lead. And the drumming is spot on too. It's not easy listening, though, and my attention wandered. Next time I listen it may be a 4, but for now it's a 3. Fave tracks Gloria's Steps (Take 2) and All of You (Take 2).
Very mellow, I like how long each song is and that it bleeds into the next!
This was fine? Each song was repeated twice which I found unnecessary. The live aspect was mildly interesting. Especially listening with headphones
3.5 very groovy
Started off OK, thought this may turn the tide of low jazz scores but sadly didn't last. Probably my most liked jazz album so far, but can't justify any more than 3 stars (and feel like it's bordering on 2 tbh). Just as well today is a good day.
I am not a jazz connoisseur, however this had a great vibe to it. 3 stars because its multiple version of similar songs.
Smooth Jazz. Moni ellei kaikki kappaleet oli jostain syystä kahdesti ja en osaa oikeasti sanoa oliko ne samoja kappaleita. Kertoo jonkin verran millaista musiikkia. Aika taustamusiikkia, mutta hyvää sellaista. Ei parhaita
No m'agrada especialment el jazz però l'he gaudit bastant Expected Lorenzo rating 1 BeCaUsE lIvE
i'm more of a mingus man myself, but it was a nice listen that soothed while i wrote and played games. nice stuff.
Not what I normally call ‘my thing’ but I enjoyed it.
Easy listening jazz. The piano is nice. Nothing in particular demanded my full attention but it's certainly not unpleasant to listen to. Would look up more Bill Evans in future.
Ljúfur og áheyrilegur jazz, en píanó-bassi-trommu tríó er í sjálfu sér ekki mitt uppáhald. Kannski þarf maður að renna þessu oftar, en þetta er ekki mjög grípandi við fyrstu hlustun.
I tried to keep an open mind, but jazz just isn't my thing.
A nice jazz album. Well record too
Felt like I was in a speakeasy with a pack of Newports and an Old Fashioned
Music for my next highbrow soirée. Actually quite relaxing after a while. Listens: 1 Fave Track: Solar
That's not my taste in musik. But ok
Pleasent, light jazz, perfect for an easy Friday afternoon
A pleasant listen heavy in jazzy improv. A good listen for jazz enthusiasts, but just a bit monotonous for those not as acquainted with the genre. I didn’t need all the standup bass solos…
Jazz for jazz heads. Not my favorite B.E.T album.
Felt like I was in an hour-long Charlie Brown TV special, except with more bass solos. I’m not mad.
Me this morning: yes, some Jazz! Yes, some Bill Evans. And one I haven't heard yet. Jazz is kind of hard for me to rate. A lot of it sounds the same to my casual/untrained ear so I have to rate it on how it makes me feel instead of its technical proficiency- which I gather is what makes a lot of great jazz albums great. This one would indeed be a wonderful album to play on a Sunday.
I'll admit, there's probably something about the performance I'm missing—a review of the album on this website mentioned how good the interplay is between the three is if you listen hard enough. Of course, like a lot of other albums I've covered, I don't really have the time to listen to it closely enough to hear that? Like I normally notice stuff like that to begin with, anyway. And besides, even the review mentions it's not the reviewer's favorite album by this album, so... For my money, it's good jazz trio jazz (I like that sort of atmosphere), but I think I'll stick more with the A CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS soundtrack.
Good background music, at least.
Liked it more than the first time I listened but think Bill Evans has better albums.the bass is just too much sometimes.
In all it was a fine album, but piano jazz just doesn't do it for me. Technically speaking it was well performed.
I don’t know how to appraise this. I feel truly neutral. The album repeated itself on my phone, and I only realized it started over when it occurred to me the album was incredibly long. 3. But not a 3 for “pretty good.” A 3 for “I dunno.”
Not my style.
Solid jazz record. Some of the Bass solos were a but much for me, and I didn't like that there were multiple back-to-back takes of the same songs. But those are pretty minor quibbles.
Cool jazz trio. I washes over in a pleasant way.
Pues muy bien el virtuosismo de los músicos, pero es que no soy aficionada al género y no veo que esté en camino de serlo, la verdad. 🤷🏼♀️
smooth chill jazz that was easy listening. not particularly standout but i'd rather listen to this than some of the more out there stuff this generator has been throwing at me. favourite song was all of you - take 3
I mean...I like it. It's really good--these are obviously incredibly talented musicians. I find myself easily distracted, however, which means it's good background music...?
Didn’t make it the whole way through, but good jazz is good jazz. Gets the standard 3 stara
3 out of 5. This was a nice listening experience. I am much more on the saxophone, or electric jazz guitar flavor for jazz, however this was enjoyable. 3/5
A- 2.5/5 could listen to it. D -3 definition of easy listening and not in the best possible way. Great skill tho
Pretty chill. Even a bit too classy for my taste. But can jazz be to classy? 3.5/5.
It’s good. Instrumental, didn’t finish
Nice album to kick back and listen to, maybe while reading or writing up a schedule. I don't really listen to jazz, but I have some renewed interest The ambience of the live performances adds a lot to the likeability, oddly.
Not usually a big fan of directly listening to instrumental jazz stuff, but this is well constructed. Feels like atmospheric music to me. Weirdest thing to me is to have multiple versions of songs with the same name under different "Take" numbers, but I guess that's common for jazz live albums at the time? Listening a second time. I enjoy this but I don't think I would pick it? Also just kind of washing over me rather than getting me to engage with it directly. Maybe due to working? Unsure.
Not really my thing. Easy listening and good musicianship.
Fine. It's just so hard to tell if you like jazz or not.
Not my style at all. I love piano, but not when it's part of jazz. Just not my favorite.
Bass player is amazing, not my favorite bill evans
Love the attention to the bass.
Was talented just I’m not the person to spin up a piano album. Was a bit to much on the classical for my liking.
Sehr angenehm und gute Musik. Aber halt Jazz, geht hauptsächlich nur nebenher. Spannend das in der Live-Aufnahmen so viele Leute zu hören sind. Das macht es sehr authentisch.
This really did nothing but provide some chill background music on my drive home from work. What’s special about this?
I did not like jazz at all in my younger days but as I have aged i have lost my jazz prejudices and have given it a try but in no way am I an aficionado. The elements of jazz I really like nowerdays are the more modern female jazz vocalists singing in a laid back smoky atmosphere. This album however was a joy to listen to. Have listened to Bill Evan’s before and found it ideal background music or to put on at bedtime. Can tell very accomplished and talented musicians involved. Liked this enough to put in my new discovery playlist.
Definitely felt like a Sunday At the Village Vanguard listening to this one. Not a good choice when you are needing to stay awake…but not bad either
Insofar as jazz goes this is some good stuff. Stellar production and wonderful arrangements working in service of an album that is great when you’re “in the mood” for some jazz.
This was just OK. My taste for jazz is young and underdeveloped but I don’t think I care for this type. I didn’t mind it, though. It would be good as background music while I putter around the house or something.
Sehr schön athmos. Nicht ganz meine Musik aber anregend.
Kinda lost track of it after a while. I know it's a quintessential jazz record, but was just ok for me.
Goede muzikanten, maar wel een beetje saai album.
Classic live jazz sound
A friend of mine is a big jazz aficionado and thinks Bill Evans is brilliant. I can recognise this as good jazz but otherwise I don't enjoy it a lot; I previously gave a Coltrane album 5/5 but that's because I want my jazz to have some saxophone.
Enjoyable, easy listening. Nice drumming at times too. Not something I'd listen to regularly but enjoyable nonetheless.
Although I have grown (both just through the years of life and with this project) to appreciate music from the jazz genre, this particular trio style still doesn’t thrill me. It makes for fine background music, like at a fancy dinner, but as the focus, it left me wanting. Maybe I needed the setting of a jazz club to make it sing to me today.
Fine background music. Not much really caught my attention though. I wanted to like it more than I did.
Solid. High 3+.
Better off spending Sunday at church under the steady gaze of the blessed sweet little blue eyed baby Jesus. Nah, it's fine. I'm not a jazz guy but I s'pose I'd throw this on in the event that it seemed like a time to throw on some jazz.
Ok
Good rainy day music
I'm not classy enough to really jam out to this album. I can recognize the quality enough to enjoy it though.
The performances on this album are great. The bass player is outstanding, and the standout was the solo on "Solar." However, this type of jazz borders on "elevator music," for me, and I don't find anything about the specific compositions to stand out and bring me back. Part of it may be the piano-focus, which is not as appealing to me as saxophone or even more bass or drum emphasis. However, I would revisit this album in the future while cooking or cleaning around the house.
amazing bass lines
Really solid jazz music - just not my kind of jazz. There is some impressive musicianship happening on these live tracks. I think the instrumentation is neat considering all 3 of the instruments used are considered “rhythm section” instruments in most forms of jazz, but each act in many roles, including soloist, in this trio. All that being said, it’s just not where my heart lies when it comes to jazz style which is why I gotta give it a 3.
3/5 niceish, but not enough
I really enjoyed this aside from the bass solos. I know they’re technically impressive, but they just sound grating.
Good Jazz
Pleasant jazz trio. These days, this sound has been sooooo overplayed, it is just background music now. Is it Bill Evans' fault that the format he perfected here became the template for a thousand mediocre jazz trios, playing ever fading carbon copies of this same style for the next 60 years? This album has to be considered best in class for its type. Clearly, warmly and intimately recorded, with quiet audience atmospherics, the interplay between three players at the peak of their powers is tight and relatively focused. The tragic death of bass player Scott LaFaro in a car accident less than two weeks after this recording adds a melancholy note to this album. I respect Evans' decision to make this album a tribute to LaFaro, by giving him a featuring credit and including two of LaFaro's compositions and choosing tracks with significant bass solos. A touching tribute.
Loved it, easy to listen to!
Heg er sgu ikke så meget till jazz, men det her var helt ok. Kunne jeg godt lytte til igen.
Slipped into the background a bit too much for me, but not bad.
Good jazz, I want to go to the Village Vanguard (didn't listen to all of it)
Jazz não é muito a minha praia.
Nice piano jazz, though in its nature, it is repetitive
Every song was kind of the same
I don't know much about Jazz. This seemed good. They played their instruments well. All the tracks kind of blur together into an hour long single track. Enjoyable, but not as good as the Getz/Gilberto album I listened to two days ago (for my taste).
JAZZ
Good piano background music.
not my tempo
Para quem gosta de um bom jazz, ótima pedida!
Cool smooth chill session jazz, which would be awesome to kick back and have playing in the background. Bill Evans trio had quite a fan base, but the sophistication of each track was kinda lost on me, with most of it feeling the same as the last track. Loved the double time brush drumming, silkily played out to compliment effortless piano and bass.
this was interesting! just not really for me
Heard before: no It feels like I need the 1001 Bill Evans Records I Need To Hear Before I Die; there’s a new one unearthed every year. So I’m glad one was assigned here. And… I might need to hear more bad jazz to appreciate the subtlety here. This is certainly masterful, virtuosic - the bass player RIPS - and there are a few tracks and passages that stand out. I appreciate the cool piano voicings that are so famous, and the more I ease in to it, the better it is. I just feel like there is a lot of context I just don’t have. 1000 Bill Evans records to go… Top tracks: Alice In Wonderland (Take 2), Jade Visions (Take 2), My Man’s Gone Now
Ok.. abstract jazzy
Felt like pretty standard jazz as a lay listener. Not deep into the musicology enough to know if it broke any barriers or influenced the jazz to come. Good to study to, but more relaxing and less dynamic compared to the electronic/lo-fi/house instrumentals in my study playlists. Would be a first choice if I were hosting a dinner party, which is probably the point. 5.5/10
It’s fine
Not a jazz fan...it’s jazz
It was fine, but nothing that I would listen to on my own
Not for my taste, but decent slow piano.
I'd find myself tuning out every now and again but if there was a bass solo I'd tune back in. There's lots of groovy stuff to enjoy in this album. I would throw it on again to work to but I'm not much for active listening to jazz.
I like jazz, I like Evans' contributions to the world of jazz, but this one errs a bit too much towards easy listening by my book.
Kind of sounds like lounge music though when it was recorded it was probably pretty new.
The first time I listened to this was in the car. That was months ago and I forgot to write up a score. From a vague memory I didn't enjoy it much. Today I came back to it, this time in the kitchen whilst cooking away a bunch of stuff. It's much better suited to that sort of thing. Light background music - and there's nothing wrong with that. The improv aspects, especially the drums, are a bit much at times for me. But I'm not a jazz aficionado and I guess that there will be people who love that shit. I'd take the gentle background nature of this, or one of the related performances. I won't actively seek this out to listen to regularly, but I might easily stick it on on a Friday afternoon when I'm cooking something good for dinner. It's another of those solid 3.5 star ones that don't quite merit a 4, but are better than some of the stuff that gets a 3.
Amazing recoding. Can place each of the two people in the crowd when they clap. But not the music for me
Background music and a very easy listen
I love jazz. This album really isn't different from many of the others in the space. I do understand it's hard to differentiate yourself on these. I can respect it and have listened to this album in it's entirety a few times, but there's nothing new here. Just well crafted jazz that you can get in a lot of clubs around the US.
Don't normally approve of live albums, but the audience is virtually nonexistent other than intro and outro clapping. Nice laid back piano jazz.
A new album for me. Really liked Alice in Wonderland. To me he has such a distinctive sound.
Not my style
Deep respect for the ingenious music, but not my thing. 6.5/10
Alice in wonderland had me creaming me jeans Music for being sophisticated
More Jazz. Not bad, but not my thing.
Skills on show but not the kind of jazz I can sink into on a cold listen. End of the last track synced up with me landing in Venice which was a moment. I'm sure it comes with more listening but I can't find anything to sink my teeth into with playing this loose. Fave track: Jade Visions - Take 2
objectively good by nearly any measure but i just don't like piano so let's compromise on a 3
It's not nearly as exciting as what Miles Davis or Charles Mingus were doing around this time, but I'm certainly not gonna say no to calming jazz
Pretty good tbf
I won't rate it too low as to not seem uncultured. This was fine as *background jazz* but didn't make much of an impact to my 21st century ears (but a break from dad-rock is always appreciated, of course).
Pleasantly enjoyable, but I'd be lying if I said I could tell the difference between good and bad jazz. Just short of upgrading to 4*.
3.5 Good album. Nice to relax to. Recorded live and there are people talking during the performance which is distracting.
Have to give it another listen some day, was not in the mood for it.
Do you know what this is? Yes, this is jazz.
De grandes nuances d’interprétation. Me semble assez « standard » comme jazz. Écoute facile et agréable. Superbe.
Good romantic candlelight dinner background music
7/10. very beautiful
Good! Just too long
This is music that's best listened to live in a jazz club where you're forced to pay attention and focus on the music. For me, this album evokes images of a rainy day in New York in the autumn.
Beautiful, but a bit bored, haven’t finished in one sitting. Will probably come back to it later (If I can remembrer)
It's gooodddd yeah lots of double bass solos lol that I didn't find the most um. Gripping, at times. Experimental. Some gorgeous phrasing but there is just so so much that a lot of it is going to miss for me.
This was nice background music for a cocktail party. I don't know anything about jazz so I can't really say if it's truly great or just ok.
Its jazz and hoo-boy is it Jazz.... its pleasant, its not my thing, it goes a bit all over the place at times and there are a few songs where the drummer seems to only want to hit the cymbal...but its unoffensive 2.5 rounded up to 3
This was fine.
Fine, if unexciting piano tinkling
A smooth lounge jazz, I can see myself there with a vodka gimlet, not as interesting as other jazz albums but did have some shining tracks.
Nice chilled album
It’s a cute little jazz piano moment, but not a life changer for me.
Expected more. Maybe wrong day wrong album. Smack in the double middle for me.
Nice background music
This is good, but also a tad to backgroundy
I like the general vibe but it's a bit too much for me as an album. As I'm typing this I realise I've listened to a lot of the songs twice (take1/take2) without realising this which might contribute to the fact it felt a bit montenous at times :')
Pure jazz. Was not in the mood for it, but can appreciate the technical mastery.
7/10
Jazz. Rating: 3.0
Good jazz album
this kind of jazz just isn’t for me, i don’t know what emotions it’s supposed to evoke, but it’s technically impressive and probably just the shit for some people
If I knew jazz, I’m sure this is 10. It’s easy to listen to and is really diverse when you pay attention to it
Respect the musical ability on display, always blows my mind that people can just whip out this kind of stuff live (and probably improvised) but just don’t really get jazz
I wasn't in the mood. It was alright. Jade Visions
Great listen during a Sunday cooking session with Sylvia
love bill evans, never heard this album. fantastic and emotive. a 3.2
Nice as background noise, will give it a more engaged listen some day
Every song sounds the same. With that said I can see how this music would be great to have the background while eating at a fancy restaurant or in a classy bar. I’d like to have this in the background with friends over while drinking wine.
Again, I don't understand jazz all that well. Lots of lovely double bass on this and it washed over me pleasantly.
smooooth jazz - though this is the first alb i didn’t listen to in full
I can tell it's all technically proficient I just don't get jazz. Pleasant sounding though. Don't think I'd search it out again
Sounded cool good to study too was a bit like elevator music tho
First Jazz album I've ever listened to, didn't really do it for me. Very talented musicians but the music just sounds like random bass/piano playing. Didn't really feel anything from the first listen. 5/10
Not a big fan of jazz.
After enough of these live jazz albums I'm beginning to realize that I shouldn't judge these the same as most of the other albums. I began to enjoy this much more when I back to listen to it ambiently as opposed to critically like I do with most of the albums. Unfortunately, I'm not sure how to translate that to a criticism and a rating because it was nice for around an hour of messing around on my phone but would've bored me if I had listened any more intently. In general, though, it was really nice, relaxing jazz and I didn't even notice that they put multiple takes of the same song on there.
I wish I knew what this music meant. "Waltz for Debby" was my favorite on this record.
Wallpaper Jazz – I'm sure it's amazing
Du bon petit jazz qui se laisse écouter
real jazz, viruous pianist, very chilly, i can appreciate this kind of music, but not directly my favourite style.
Smooth improvisations, great piano.
Not a fan of lounge jazz, but I appreciate the skill
Super chill, maar voor mij niet meer dan dat.
Per quanto sia interessante, non è il modo giusto di ascoltarlo. Va bene di sottofondo a una serata davanti a un cocktail.
Good yes
Perfectly pleasant jazz record.
I've heard other Bill Evans stuff that I enjoy more, but this was some perfect background-clean-the-office music the other day. I'll never listen to it again, probably. But it didn't annoy me.
Good to work to
I enjoy jazz, so quite liked this album. I found the piano parts particularly compelling.
Pretty easy-going listen
I find this sort of piano pootling alternately cool with a Capital C and just plain annoying.
Nice live jazz album with a big reputation - not spectacular, but very easy to listen to.
Nice palate cleanser in between all the pop and rock music. Smooth piano playing by Evans, but don't care much for the bass solos.
Smooth and subtle, nice music in the background.
Some nice mellow jazz, real pretty. Sorry, I honestly don't have much more to say, I'm no jazz aficionado. I could come back to this though.
Cool don't think I finished it around half way or more probably. OK, could tell there were really good musicians. Piano my fav, bass was annoying sometimes. Will listen again.
Great. Bur why all the takes?
Good album when in Jazz mood
This would be awesome if I was listening to it at a jazz club with a beverage. But in my home it doesn't feel the same. Interesting to hear the different takes.
These guys play well together. The bass and piano soloing over each other sounded great. The thing I didn’t like was all the bass solos. Nass solos are almost as pompous as drum solos.
This album is about Synergy. Although its pretty stripped down with only piano, bass and drums, the interaction and synergy between the three band members is lighting in a bottle. The other secret ingredient here is the venue. I've been fortunate to catch some jazz acts at the Village Vanguard and the intimate ambience of the club adds mystique and even more magic to the performance. This album is pretty iconic, but what I wouldn't give to have seen and heard this live.
Listened once, to return to later
Lovely stuff.
It was ok, but nothing really hooked me. I didn't dislike it in any way, but I don't have any reason to come back to it. 2.75/5
great jazz music but again with the live albums. I think jazz translates better than most but live albums can't be more than a 3 in my book
Can't fault it but i really don't like jazz
I mean, it's a lot cooler than I'll ever be.
Solid album primarly great for background music. I'm not a big listener of this kind of jazz but the album is good for what it is. The musicianship is top class. Special shout out to the bass player, the bass is what kept me primarily engaged here.
Nice background music for a soirée. Why is it on this list?
It is a jazz album but wasn't overbearing. It was pleasant and relatively short.
Nice easy listening
Fine, quite jazzy though
6/10. Chill jazz, it's nice but doesn't excite me
Good live jazz record but nothing mind blowing
Random but quite relaxing. Not sure about the bass
Nice background music, can't remember anything that really stood out
A mellow jazz album that works nicely has background music. Not sure I concentrated on the music enough to appreciate it fully.
Niiiicccee. Inoffensive background music.
-I'm still not smart enough to analyze jazz -I found these to be indistinguishable by memory from the Miles Davis albums that I've had ("The Birth Of The Cool" and "Kind Of Blue") -Idk 3 stars I guess cuz that's what the other jazz ones got
Very avant-garde, unreal bass playing that compliments the piano perfectly. The drums do a great job of building and dropping tension in a trio that seems to be more focussed on individual performances rather than a cohesive three parter. The drums do very well to give a sense of overall cohesion to the emotions of a particular tune. Some of the bass solos are genuinely not good as far as I can understand. Obviously he's getting up to some mad shit I've never heard of before, but it's so dissonant at parts and spacious that it feels a bit thrown together.
Fav song - Solar - super cool dissonant repeating piano chords - Wild bass solo in the middle - You can tell this is the drummers favourite - Jade visions is a fantastic song as well Least Fav Song - All of you, didn’t stick with me as much as the other songs
Listened as drive in to work music on. Friday morning.... Would have been slightly better as the home drive into the evening. Still a darn nice week of music ....
Bad day, might be worth another listen
3.5 This is more along the lines of the type of jazz I’ve been spending the year listening to. It starts off a little rough, it doesn’t seem like they’re jelling too much with the bassist being all over the board, but by the second song it seems like they find a groove and the music becomes much more hooky. I don’t think it stands out among the jazz that I’ve heard recently, but there are a few stand out tracks that will absolutely be added to my Jazz favorites playlist. Favorites: My Man’s Gone Now, Solar, Alice in Wonderland, Jade Visions
3 I really wanted to watch some Peanuts after this. What can I say? It's a jazz record. Never something I'd rush out to listen to, but also something I'd never complain to have on. However, I really couldn't tell you what the difference between this jazz record and every other jazz record in existence is, and I definitely couldn't have told you four songs were played twice (albeit different takes) without looking at the tracklist. Overall, it's a fine enough album.
Good trio. While the band plays very well, nothing in particular stood out to me about this album. Much more interesting things were happening in the jazz world by this time, so I don't think I remember this album much.
Plinkety
The invention of heroin?
Its hard for me to give jazz albums more than a 3 because my setting is key to my enjoyment, but in a on-the-laptop-at-work context I'm loving these jazz albums. 3/5 except when at work 5/5.
In the right mood this is a wonderful album. However it has to be the right mood or this sucks. Grab some wine sit back and enjoy someone in the kitchen cleaning dishes with jazz sounds in the background
Kinda in between on this one. I listen to it but nothing jump out for me. Was ok.
Ok for a jazz record.
Taas kerran se usvainen kellari-jazz-klubi nii 5/5. Muuten 2,5 eli kai se 3 annettava
nah
coffee house jazz starts good then falls off
Jazz
Cool.
Smooth and easy to listen to jazz music. I enjoyed this album. Nothing specifically stood out enough to make it spectacularly outstanding. If I wanted to put something on in the background I'd totally listen this to.
A little long for my personal taste, but a fairly exquisite listen. I wish I enjoyed it a bit more. Still, it was overall a solid offering.
I like the Bill Evans Trio, I listen to their Portrait in Jazz a lot so expected to like this one more.
I'll say it again. I just don't get jazz. It is good, they play well. But I can't tell if this is an exceptional collection or the guys I hear at a high-end corporate dinner party. What is the difference between the two collection of songs? Nothing really stood out to me.
Piano, upright bass and drums, classic combo. This was a good easy listen. Now hand me my smoking jacket and slippers.
Very chilled jazz, just what the Saturday afternoon ordered.
People in the 60s clearly didn't know how to clap properly.
vintage, clean, charming, background music
Pleasant jazz trio. These days, this sound has been sooooo overplayed, it is just background music now. Is it Bill Evans' fault that the standard he perfected became the template for a thousand mediocre jazz trios, playing ever fading carbon copies of this same style for the next 60 years? This album has to be considered best in class for its type. Clearly, warmly and intimately recorded, with quiet audience atmospherics, the interplay between three player sat the peak of their powers is tight and relatively focused.
Okay.
I really enjoyed how the playfulness of the trio. Can’t wait to give it another listen.
Jazzy
This was a nice listen, but I'm no jazz aficionado so it kind of sounded like any other trio jazz album. Great music for working, though!
It's ok, I wouldn't choose to listen it. It's ok as background music while I'm doing other stuff.
Not my favorite style of jazz but it was chill
I liked this for a jazz album. Was cool it was live and didn't get boring like some
Even though this is labeled as the Bill Evans trio, the real star of the show to me was the bassist, that man was riffing. Very sad to hear he died shortly after this recording. I really enjoyed the muffled sounds of the bar crowd in the background, adds to the ambiance of this album, perfect rainy Sunday afternoon listen. To me, this is a good jazz album with some good players, but it didn't do enough to stand above the crowd.
Reading about it, it sounds like an amazing technical feat. That didn't change my listening experience.
I think I've listened to a track or two from the Bill Evans Trio before. Sunday at the Village Vanguard is good music. I'd easily agree to listen to more from the band, but nothing stood out calling me back for a second listen.
This was nice, even though its not really my thing, I'm sure it's influential and fabulous and all that stuff too but it was nice background music while I cooked
Nice chill jazz vibes, excellent background for painting pots.
Good stuff
Lush laid back jazz tones
Really good, relaxing and perfect for concentration
Is this gonna be jazz? Yeah, it was jazz. Not too bad really, not my cup of tea overall but I didn't mind listening even though it went for an hour. Turned out to be a fun soundtrack to getting punished in Elden Ring. Some weird percussion sounds though - I kept thinking something inside my flat was making a noise but it was the music haha. 3/5.
Nothing exceptional, sounded like background music for the most part.
Good album, nothing stuck out
Buh
There is beauty in simplicity. It is what first drew me to punk and hardcore. Stripped off any bells and whistles, one is allowed to fully appreciate what is truly trying to be displayed, whether its unhinged rage or vitriolic thoughts. Other times, a simplicity in musical arrangements allow for each player to take up more space in the room, and not only display their prowess, but their ability to function as a unit. That ability is what first drew me to bands like Bad Religion and Radio Birdman, and today it is what I enjoy about this album. The album title really lives up to its name of being a Sunday; light, breezy and carefree, but not devoid of thought or emotion. The piano work of Billy Evans that I am entirely unfamiliar with, and while this writer would be hard-pressed to distinguish him from any other jazz pianist, it was the Trio's ability to have to play a part while playing apart. The walking basslines (of one Scott La Faro) and lively snare and hi hat work made for a fun listen on its own, and was only augmented by the melodically atonal piano of Mr Evans. The fact that this was recorded live makes it the more intriguing.
I am in a situation in which I appreciate jazz, I find it enjoyable. Yet, I find it hard to judge it. So I'll keep it on the average side (sorry jazz fans).
Jesus, what a reprieve after the Butthole Surfers. Every time I hear jazz, I think a few things: "This is really proficient and top-notch musicianship" AND "I have no idea where this slots in with other jazz music" AND "I could listen to this in the background constantly. That being said, I typically prefer non-piano jazz. I mean, I like jazz with pianos. Just not as as the focal point. Except the Charlie Brown Christmas soundtrack. That's my jam. This is fine. 2.5 rounded down for not standing out. Oh wait. 1961. It must've made a splash at that time.
I’ll reiterate this every time I’m presented with a jazz album on this list - jazz should be enjoyed live and in person, imho. Theres just something about it that I want to “see” when I hear it. It should be an experience. That said, this trio is clearly talented. Also, it was recorded live with all the glasses clinking in the background and everything - that was cool. And, admittedly, this is as close as you can get to experiencing these guys live at this point as I assume they’re all dead. So - nice work.
1st Listen. It's nice. 3/5.
What's the superior jazz arrangement? The trio, or the "classic quartet?" Since I don't know diddly about jazz music, other than it generally sounds chill, maybe the answer lies in an exploration of other trios and quartets. Groups of three can be great. The triple play-turning trio of Tinkers to Evers to Chance. The Musketeers were great as a three-piece, but weren't too bad as a quartet either. I've heard some enjoy a ménage à trois, but can't verify. Trios professional wrestling. The Three Amigos. Harry, Ron, and Hermione. Three's Company (oops, already covered that one). Luke, Han, and Leia (sorry Chewie). The Three Stooges. The Powderpuff Girls. And the list goes on. Wow, that's a lot of high quality trios. On the other hand you've got the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the Beatles, the Fantastic Four/Incredibles, the Ghostbusters, the South Park boys, the Four Horsemen (either of the apocalypse or of professional wrestling), the Golden Girls. This experiment has proven inconclusive. As has my attempt to review this jazz album.
This is a nice album, but simply not something you have to hear before you die.
No está mal, pero tampoco hay nada que me haya emocionado profundamente. Jazz tranquilo para escuchar de fondo y poco más. En cualquier caso lo voy a aprobar.
A little too sleepy for first thing in the morning, but I dig it
Fine as atmospheric music but some guys lengthy piano solos is not my idea of music to dedicate yourself listening to
This album is more jazz than I can bear. I can hear that the players are masters of craft, but all of the tracks are endlessly meandering, with the performers playing in a very self-serving manner, as opposed to song-serving. I know this is par for the course for jazz, and I know that I don't like that. I also dislike how more than one take of the same songs needed to be be included on this album. 2.5/5, which I'll round up.
Ya like jazz?
Smooth and jazzy. Feels like a fancy hotel bar.
Sunday At The Village Vanguard is an ok jazz album. It's a live album, but I do not really get if that factors in to it. No punishment to listen to it, but it does not stick. More like a high quality background sound setting a mood.
Overall, I liked it. Was kind of annoyed with the live setting at points. I didn't realize I'd just randomly having people chit chatting in the background. Was making me think someone was talking in my house or something. Bugged me out until like the 5th song lol. It's alright though, It's very much a hotel Lobby slapper.
Nice little jazz album. Very easy to listen to but nothing exciting here. Sort of generic sounding. Would gladly put this on in the background and just hang out with friends.
Nice relaxing music.
I enjoy Jazz well enough as a nice choice for background music; it's usually mellow, no lyrics to get distracted by and provides a noisy distraction during a lull in conversation. Don't really know what makes a good or bad Jazz album since a lot of it all sounds the same to me. Piano seemed to take more of a center stage than in many Jazz tunes which was immediately apparent on My Man's Gone Now and then throughout the album. I prefer more of the tsk, tsk, tsk of the drummer's cymbals and the bumb, bumb, bumb of the double bass along with some horns like the trumpet or sax. Album was pretty consistent throughout. A few tunes (can the be called songs?) started slow and thought they'd continue as such, Jade Visions being the exception. And what's with having the same tune multiple times on an album? I get they were different takes but sounded like the same versions to me.
Jazzy
7/10
Crazy bass run jazz, very chill
Jazz gut und schön, aber mir fehlt das Leben, es zu hören!
Decent background music but not more for today's ears
Trevlig jazz.
I actually enjoyed the ambient sounds of the Village Vanguard. Felt like I was there
Jazzsmúþí, róandi og ljúft
3/5
A very subtle and relaxed album. The song structures seem, to my untrained ear at least, to be completely linear and unrepeating lines throughout. There aren't verses and choruses, just a start, an exploration and an end. I'm so accustomed to hearing repetition in music, that I'm unsure of what to make of it. It must take an immense knowledge and comfort with your instrument, with your bandmates and with the foundations of music theory to make music like this. What I can't say for the album, is that any one track stood out to me. This is probably again due to my lack of understanding the format of Jazz and the challenge of what they are doing as musicians, but I feel like I could be dropped into the middle of any of these songs and I would have no idea which one is which. Again, I don't really know what to make of it. All told, I wouldn't likely go out of my way to put this album on again, but I do feel opened to something new and I'm curious to learn more from others that do have a deeper appreciation/fascination with the genre.
It was a lot of elevator music…
It was a pleasant listen but not one that I will likely listen to again.
I read that this is a commemoration of the bass player's virtuosity, but I sadly didn't enjoy the bass solos. Piano is great, however.
I still don't get jazz. Can 3 people seemingly be playing their own song at the same time and it not sound bad. I guess the answer is yes, but it also doesn't sound great either. There are a few times in Solar and All of You where i found that i was getting into the groove and it was working for me... but too often the bass line would go from "vibing" to "annoying" like a gnat constantly flying around my face. I'll give them credit for what they're doing, but it isn't something i'll return to. I definitely enjoy Bill Evans' piano work. Impressive.
I must say I don't love the virtuosic bass. I feel it interferes with the piano rather than supporting or driving and is simply playing too many notes and often too high for my taste. Wish their had been more individual mics on the drums. Sounds of the club atmosphere aren't too distracting but don't really do a whole lot for me either. I like a good jazz trio but the bass dominates to my ear so much I feel like it should be called the Scott LaFaro Trio not the Bill Evans Trio.
At first I enjoyed it a lot, but all the songs are about the same tempo/style so it wore on a little it. It's nice but, got sort of bored.
Classic jazz. Like the moving bass parts
little rat scat for my morning coffee prep! Good piano, rather chaotic but an alright vibe.
Enjoyable. Didn’t want to turn off. Impressed this is a live record.
I used to be an instrumentalist. Classical and jazz. I wanted to like this album, I truly did. I liked the concept. The execution didn't do it for me. Felt like cheap music at an awkward dinner party.
Good with a wine.
Enjoyable calm jazz album. First few songs were the highlights. The second and third takes became a bit stale after a bit. But overall decent. 6.2/10
Ist halt Jazz, kann ich nicht viel mit anfangen
This is without a doubt great playing, but I wasn't thrilled by it. I respect it, especially for being recorded in 1961, but I probably won't relisten.
Great piano and composition work. A little softer than I prefer, but pleasant.
Good live jazz album
Tinklelicious!
Seems alright, interesting that it was recorded live, had some parts I liked and a lot of gentle noise in between.
Late night, smokey Jazz. Best Tracks: My Man's Gone Now, Solar, Alice in Wonderland
Bill Evans sure can tickle the ivories
Well, it's jazz. Well done jazz. Would I know if it wasn't? I'd like to think so, but who knows. Honestly this album slipped by as a background track. I didn't pay special attention to it, but it was pleasing to the ear. I do not, however feel like everyone must hear this album in their lifetime.
Good for what it is! Jazzy jam sessions
Solid album, though I don't have a lot of knowledge of the genre. Will likely revisit
