Reviews (page 8 of 12)
The music was pleasant and relaxing, but way too vanilla for my Jazz tastes.
I like jazz but lack the ability to speak on it. I really liked the bassist and it's quite sad he died so young.
I'm not a jazz expert, so maybe the finer points of this one flew over my head. To me, it just sounded like, well... jazz. Not bad, not mind-blowing, just solid, classic-sounding stuff. I had it playing while I was working and it made for a nice backdrop. The musicianship is clearly top-tier, but nothing really grabbed me.
Bill Evans is truly a legend that helped popularize the movement from bebop into modal jazz and totally deserves to be on this list, in addition to his work for Miles Davis. Having said that, I personally have not been passionate about modal jazz. I did enjoy the energy of the live audience in what sounded like a dinner theater. Just like the live B.B. King album that appeared earlier, the ambience gave this album more kinetic energy than it might have otherwise had.
ovaj džez album nije me oborio s nogu :( iako je i dalje dosta dobar
It's fine. It doesn't really do anything for me but they all seem like competent musicians. It was good background music on a Monday morning. I think I need something a bit more pep now though.
pretty good for jazz, kind of hard to make it through a whole album. maybe i don't love all jazz?
nice bit of old school jazz. Will come back to this again
It’s not AiW
This was a great listen for productivity! I enjoyed having this is background noise. While I think the trio had great talent and chemistry, the music itself did not wow me. The difficult thing is that I am finding myself comparing this to Miles Davis for some reason. Kind of Blue felt more engaging than the songs on this album.
By the time we are done with the 1001 I can proclaim myself to be a jazz aficionado! This was well played but I would be lying if I didn’t say I lost interest in the album about 1/2 through Solar. It felt too Paris Nightclub Noir, like background in a Humphrey Bogart movie. Scott LaFare’s bass work was intriguing for many reasons: his use of tapping (bouncing the strings off the fretboard) and bending the notes/strings was uncommon until Eddie Van Halen mainstreamed it in the late 1970s/early 1980s, and no-one every did/does it on double bass. I respect the talent of all these musicians but this jazz just felt like a product of the time rather than enduring the test of time.
Random thoughts: * This was some chill jazz. Maybe almost stereotypical. * This would have been cool to have been in the house for this one live and then have it preserved on record. * I didn't realize several of the songs repeated. * I wonder if I'm too much of a jazz novice to really appreciate this one. * I'll play this one again when I need some chill jazz background music.
⭐️Solar
Excellent album de jazz live, très chill, avec de belles performances de tous les membres du trio. Rien de trop osé ou qui part dans des envolées lyriques à s'en essouffler, un album agréable pour se laisser porter et déconnecter le cerveau.
Gave it a good try, but it's becoming increasingly clear that jazz just doesn't work for me, did not finish.
Soft chill jazz album lots of bass solos so good for homework but not really one I enjoyed listening to while at work
a little subdued for my tastes, but still a nice addition to the rotation
Chill. Favorite: “Gloria’s Step”
Decent inoffensive jazz 5/10
Great jazz pianist. One of the great ones
It is Jazz. It is pleasant to listen to, but not a genre I gravitate towards. I enjoy listening to jazz as background music, but thats about as far as it goes
Back half was better, and a couple of listens made it more enjoyable
I get that this is very good jazz, but jazz is not my thing. What I can appreciate is three very good musicians who are clearly very good at their craft Fav songs: Alice in Wonderland
Smooth jazz (?) not my favorite but I can respect it.
favorite: Solar
Music is good, however the recoding has feedback from the bass guitar frets (isolated to the left stereo output) that is annoying and distracting enough to drop a star.
It all blends in together. Well.
Lounge Music
Could grow on me, but faded into the background a bit.
Jazz album, with live recordings. I feel like i cannot rate a jazz album i dont feel like i can apreciate it as it should be I wouldnt listen to the whole album again but maybe a couple of pieces for studying relaxing etc
quite nice actually but sound like loft music also
Buen álbum de Jazz. El jazz es como música para músicos. No creo poder recordar ninguna melodía en un par de días, pero vaya que uno recuerda el feeling que imprime éste álbum.
Nice jazz album, threw it on for dinner.
- Enjoyable Jazz songs - some songs drag out a little too long.
Not bad as far as jazz goes
Great background vibe. Late night drinks music.
Easy Listening
Very nice and soothing.
It's certainly easy listening.. Not the kind of album I can dive into and focus on for it's entirety.
Nothing I can critique here. Everything sounds good to me, but it's not something that I would put on unless it happens to come through on a Christmas spotify playlist for me. It was definitely relaxing and interesting to listen to. Had a pretty good time. Cool solos and good vibes. 3
Didn’t get it until Alice in wonderland. Great players but not my thing, definitely sets a nice mood though. 3/5
I’ll take the Vince Guaraldi trio over this one, but you know exactly what you’re getting here. If you enjoy light, background jazz recorded Live for small crowds who clap tepidly—this album may be for you.
Cover: 7. I don't know much about jazz. I've liked live jazz music. I could get into this. The bass sounds all over the place. He plays like how Elaine Bernice dances. Maybe I don't get it. OVERALL: it's ok. Almost there, except the bass throws me off
J'aurais jamais cru dire ça un jour: y'a beaucoup trop de solos de contre-basse, au détriment de l'album
Loungey bar chill jazz bliss
It was cool to see a live free form jazz album on this list but eh, a little too free form for my tastes. It just felt like the album lacked any punch, I was listening and it wasn't bad but it just went in one ear and out the next.
The ultimate "ta-tsss, ta-tsss" jazz album
rip scott lafaro free jazz legend
I’m not a huge jazz guy. But can appreciate it for what it is. Enjoyed
7/10
finally, something I can actually enjoy a little. This is still the kind of jazz that I feel is too avant-garde and don't entirely understand, so this wasn't the most interesting for me. Still very pleasant. Billy, from me you are getting 7/10
2.5 stars
Nice. Some jazz artists are immediately recognizable for their style, some are just good. This one was just good. I can listen to it several times but I couldn't recognize it if heard at other times.
calm elevator music. 3
It's ok. Probably wouldn't choose to listen again.
It's fine. Not real sure what elevates this v. other jazz albums.
Was good but it ain’t mine
5/10 They sure did drum and piano and I'd have no idea if they were good at it, but they sound like they are having fun so, you know, good for them. 5-5-2025
dont get me wrong this is a great album i just cant sit through a cool jazz album rn. dont get me wrong its great but ive listened to it before and maybe one day ill listen to it again. ill give it 3 stars cause i remember it being good
Fine listen but nothing stood out to me. Not much to say about this one, just solid jazz.
Well, I don’t like it. It sounds like something my grandfather, who was born in 1929, would have liked. So I’ll give it three stars because it made me think of my grandpa.
meget lettilgængeligt og afslappende, tættere på 4 end 2. Alice in Wonderland var den bedste
Really nice and chill!
Laid back, good groove, at times a bit too noodly but some excellent tracks with good interplay between the band. Worth more listens.
score based on talent. As with most Jazz, a lot of it blends together to form one long song, but I had a generally satisfactory time listening. +1 due to some really cool solos that caught my attention... referring to Jeremy Grey (Wedding Crashers) "Rule #6 – Do not sit in the corner and sulk. It draws attention in a negative way. Draw attention to yourself, but on your own terms." This applies
Wow. Jazz.
Not qualified to rate jazz, but i generally like putting it on in the background. Usually a high floor, low ceiling score of 3
The recording bothered me. I could hear the glasses and talking behind every track. The music was fine, but as I say in every jazz review here, I can’t tell the difference.
Sounds good. Definitely good background music for doing other things. Maybe I should listen harder… Loved the “live” little noises like the glasses clinking and the golf claps are adorable. Other than that it’s Jazz.
Nice
I enjoyed it more than I thought I would!
Nice jazz.
3/5 decent jazz but nothing special. Good music for background or focussing
Smooth
Restaurant music xD
It's jazz. Not much else to say, but it's jazz.
ахуенное пианино правда вот эти струны в левом наушнике заебывают
I am no great jazz fan, and much prefer music with lyrics, but the combination of piano, bass and drums is especially enjoyable in the jazz world. I wouldn't say I was a massively into it but I can see myself coming back to this for a specific backgroundy vibe.
3.5
elevator music but quintessential
No song i like in particular but its nice to listen
3.5
This is difficult to rate. I don’t have much experience with or insights into jazz. How do you listen to it? What matters? I don’t know. But it was pleasant.
Really pretty live jazz to do some work to. Really smoky, kind of lounge vibe that’s good to put on as the sun is going down. Love Bill Evans and he’s obviously a legend, but can’t say I’ve ever been able to fully enjoy really jazzy albums like this. It takes an unbelievable level of musicianship to play music that’s so hard that it comes back around to sounding confusing and bad. That being said, definitely love the feel and the live recording adds a ton to the ambiance. Fav track: Jade Visions
It was an enjoyable listen, but I'm not the correct audience. It sounds like a chill evening in a smoky jazz club in the 1960s, but I don't have much to compare it to because I don't have a lot of experience in this genre. I'm happy I know about it but would be interested to know how or why this is better than other albums of its ilk, would would take more time and effort to achieve.
Ok.
It sure was very jazzy, if you love jazz! It did not inspire me to love jazz, alas.
As someone trained in traditional Indian music, I have never understood how Jazz works. Some notes seem like they don't really belong in the song. But most of the parts of the songs were enjoyable.
Pretty alright album. Not really in a jazz mood currently but I think I'd like it more if I came back to it later.
Ya like jazz?
Relaxing, sounds to smoke to while the rain falls overhead
Not really my thing, but it wasn't bad. Just more like background music to me Couldn't believe it was live though - was very good quality 3 ⭐️
It was interesting hearing different takes of the same songs. I've heard some Bill Evans trio before, so wasn't terribly surprised. Good solid low key jazz, and a great soundtrack for a rainy foggy Sunday morning
Seems important to some. It's relatively mediocre to me.
Pleasant in the background, but it didn’t always make its way into the foreground.
Very enjoyable jazz. Easy to work listening to.
High expectations, but the music didn't reach me. It was kind of elusive, some soloing, not a lot of structure to be noticed. With my headphones on, it sounded as if they played in front of 30 people. Knowing nothing about Evans, I thought it should been packed.
Not a jazz connoisseur but not sure why this is on the list
Bill Evans is one of the best pianists of the hard bop/modal eras. However, I prefer to listen to Bill Evans with Miles than a piano trio setting. The interplay is fun but dynamically, it hits the ceiling pretty quickly.
Live album. na/10
Great Sunday morning album. A stereotypical sophisticated jazz album that evokes in me images of smart young people drinking strong coffee, smoking cigarettes and engaging in illicit love affairs after a long day of discussing French philosophy and modernist literature.
Really good for what it is but what it is is kind of boring.
3 maybe 4
Relaxing but different feel that special
Chilly
And the crowd goes mild. Everyone is very proficient at their instruments here as you'd expect. However, I felt the energy on this album was missing a bit compared to other albums. Its a pleasant enough listen but not one that really lasts for me.
I see this has been voted best live jazz album ever multiple times by credible sources. I believe them, I just don't possess enough sensitivity to jazz to be able to tell a difference. I liked listening to this and put it on my concentration list, but it weirdly tickles a part of my brain that needs to focus on other things when I listen to that playlist so I might take it back off. Glad I listened. 3
Not too bad, very easy to listen to as background music.
It's a solid album, but I would argue that better jazz records were left off the list.
it’s good jazz i suppose 👏🏼 smol rant about the most annoying track order on spotify, it’s just added the bonus tracks after the initial take, as the bonus are just other takes of some songs already on the record. if i would listen to this again, i’d preferably make my own playlist with the correct order leaving out the bonus tracks.
Jazz staples displayed Conveying effort with grace In night lounge magic
One of the coolest albums i've heard yet.
I generally want nothing to do with jazz. But when I'm working late and something mellow suits the mood... this fits the bill.
Some nice, easy listening. I’ve always enjoyed jazz and the piano, so i quite enjoyed this listen. But I found it lacks the flair of a Dave Brubeck style album.
Charlie Brown style. Not offensive but not enjoyable. The freneticism of jazz gives me anxiety. My ex was a jazz musician, upright bass, usually playing this style...and while I appreciate the musicianship, I've never enjoyed it, which probably in large part lead to our relationship's demise.
Good.
Near and dear to my heart, because of my Dad.
3.5
I liked it, but it's not something I would sit around an listen to. If I was a private investigator in a film noir, I'd give it 5 stars. But, since I'm not, 3 stars.
3.5
Pretty cool live jazz album. Starts off kind of slow but picks up steam at the end. All Of You was pretty awesome. 3.5 stars for RYM and 3 for the site.
Good; jazz i can definitely listen to. Nice background music.
Sunday at the village becuase it’s a fucking old folks home and everyone’s asleep In all seriousness if they mixed it up a bit I might’ve given a higher score but it’s whatever
Love Bill Evans
Very good. Much better than what I was expecting.
It's a 3. It's perfectly alright jazz. But it's not near the best of Bill Evans playing with others (Kind of Blue) or Bill Evans own trio best record (Waltz for Debby). Maybe it's here as it's a "historic" recording.
Beau petit album jazz qui d’écoute bien, mais qui devient un peu vite la même longue chanson. Belle découverte tout de même.
Tickled me. It’s no Love Supreme but it was pleasant.
Classic jazz album, good for a relaxing evening or cocktail hour vibes. Feel like I still prefer brass jazz though but really good live performances still! A 3 because I see its merit but not super my style
Nice easy-listening study music. This is my first time actually listening to real jazz. Favourite track: Alice in Wonderland
Not quite my vibe but appreciate the craftsmanship. Love that it's made me dig deeper into other genres. It's also live!!
I do like the sort of jazz Bill Evans produces but I found this hard to get into, I didn't find anything particularly compelling about it, not to say it's not bad. Just nothing mind blowing 3*
It's a nice jazz album but I would prefer if it had vocals instead of just being instrumental.
It's good. Kinda background-y music though, which I don't like that much since I'm more of an active listener. But it's still good. 3.5/5
These fella’s got talent. But without vocals, this becomes dinner theater pretty damn quick. Tough way to make a living.
The first few opening notes had me worried, but this is actually the kind of jazz I like. Reminds me of a CD I bought because it was playing in a record store in SF and I played it all the time: The Bob Brookmeyer Small Band, which I think was essentially the same line up except it had trombone. There was something pleasant about a trio of only piano, drums, and bass, although maybe could have used a horn at times--it got a bit monotonous and faded into the background at times. Still, it wasn't bad.
Not exactly my cup of tea but it did sound professional and a couple of tracks were of some interest.
Very modal improvisation - not my favourite, but it piques my interest through building tension and resolving the disonance. Cool to learn the Bill Evans played with John Coltrane and Miles Davis!
I don’t listen to a lot of jazz so I’m not super confident in this rating. It’s very beautiful it’s just I think this is the first jazz record I’ve listened to without any brass and I’m really missing it
Nice, chill jazz
gentle & relaxing
chill jazz joint
This album wasn’t really my style, but I appreciate the talent and artistry
This is much more related to my dislike of jazz in general than this specific album. I appreciate how talented the musicians are but I just can't get into it.
If Eddie Van Halen played bass in a jazz band
A nice chill cool jazz album. Enjoyed the Alice in wonderland rendition. A nice album for listening to in the background-nothing mind blowing.
Nice background music. Would work great in a cocktail bar. The bass solos are very good although let's face it does anyone get that excited about a bass solos? Of course Evans' piano playing is the highlight and he is incredible
Not a jazzer
Never heard this album before. I guess this is considered one of the greatest live jazz albums of all time. The production sounds great, you can really hear each of the artists and the crowd "noise" is nicely present without being distracting. But this isn't the kind of jazz I enjoy listening to. It's not offensive but not something I'd intentionally listen to again. Giving it 3 stars for historical significance and recording quality.
Not my thing but superb musicians
Very jazzy jazz that jazzes all over the jazz lands.
Not shabby
Since I have no idea how to judge jazz, the rating is a little arbitrary. Feels like a 2 or 3 to me; nothing special, but I don't hate it.
Beautiful jazz piano. Not what I normally listen to but great chill music to have on in background.
I dig
It was fine. Nothing I’d add to a playlist but good background music.
Not what I’d usually listen to but it’s nice music to focus with while working.
I really liked the album. A pretty cool sound. Bill Evans and his colleagues are probably brilliant on their instruments. But even though I like jazz and enjoyed this album, I probably won't be listening to it again any time soon. 3/5
Definitely some talented jazz musicians on the album, it just didn't move me like some other jazz albums on this list have.
I appreciate it for what it is, but this music is just not for me. I couldn't get through the whole album without skipping, but what I was able to tolerate was good! 3/5
Nice, not really something I would listen to often.
I feel like I should be wearing a tailored suit, holding a tumbler of whisky while chatting to a dame in a fox fur shawl while dapper gentlemen smoke cigars nearby. I appreciate the musicianship here, they're all amazing. I'm glad that I listened to this, but it's not something I would listen to again.
Fav song: Alice In Wonderland Flawless performances from incredible and very obviously highly experienced jazz musicians. This is what I think of when I think of proper Jazz. I’m not the biggest jazz head so I’m not as good at seeing the intricacies of each song, and as such find that it tends to blend together a little bit. That being said, it was a really enjoyable listen either way.
Hotel lobby vibes, forgettable
It was a jazz vibe. It was all right. Didn't love it but did not dislike it.
Can’t go wrong with some Jazz really can you
Jazz! Muito bom!
Jazz music to chill and relax to Gemiddeld
3 stars
Sounds like all the other jazz combos that I’ve heard.
Ahh, this one is relaxing. Smooth jazz for a rough day. I barely even noticed it's live, which is a compliment. Unfortunately, it mainly all just reads as "Linus and Lucy" to me. I am not a discerning jazz listener. Highlights: 'Solar', 'Gloria's Step Take 3' (Where is take 1? Also, these songs with the same name I would never match up in a million years, which either says something about jazz or something about me)
Still not into jazz but it was nice.
this would've been nice to listen to in a coffee bar or museum gift shop. i'm sure there's some really amazing musical stuff happening here, but it just didn't really grab me beyond pleasant background music.
hmm. i still don't think i "get" jazz, but this was pleasant enough to listen to most of the time. however, there were some weird sections where the bass sounded out of tune (not out of key/away from the current tonal center) and the songs were quite lengthy. also like half of them were repeats, just a different take? not that i really noticed when actually listening to them, lol. anyway, i'm a philistine who doesn't understand great art and probably wouldn't listen to this again outside of background music... sorry. i just like the sound of brass in jazz too much i guess... yeah, we'll go with that. favorites: gloria's step (take 2), jade visions (take 2), alice in wonderland (take 1)
5/10
Certainly jazz
Very good jazz piano, it's pretty chilled out. Nice beats perfect for background listening at work or some time you want to relax. I'm sure that I will be listening to this one again when the mood hits.
Jazzy
Solid background music, but not sure I’d take it on a road trip or to the gym or to the bedroom or to the wood shop or most anywhere else with much intention. Great musicianship with nothing to really pull me in.
Not a jazz fan, but this is good background music for hanging around the house.
Some nice moments but not for me
Pretty good though the bass solos seem to go on forever. There are much better Bill Evan’s albums than this one in my opion.
I really like to listen to jazz and I listen very much. I did not know this album and it is nice, but I was not able to find any deeper connection to Bill Evans' music on it.
I appreciate the rendition of Alice in Wonderland. This album is however a little boring but I can respect it for what it is.
One of the best Jazz live recordings ever, early 60s, unpredictable Jazz, quite modern but still easy to follow. Gets more chaotic. Not a style of Jazz I enjoy. The more traditional sections are delightful.
I'm not gonna pretend that I know Jazz in general, but I understand Cool Jazz even less. There's some great bass playing on here for sure, but the melodies and progression doesn't have enough oompf for me to make the music on this one consistently captivating. But again, I have no idea what I'm talking about, and I still appreciated it as a sophisticated background music, just not something I regularly actively engaged with.
Nice enough jazz, but a little long for my taste
# Album Name: Sunday At The Village Vanguard # Artist: Bill evans trio # Rating: 3/5 # Comments: A distinctly average album. Didnt hate it, didnt love. # Top Tunes: None. # Would I listen to it again? Doubtful
I don't have anything with Evans as the main feature in my library, but I have Kind of Blue, so his sound is familiar. Relaxed but not boring. Solid. Great quality for a live recording as well.
Not my favorite style of jazz. It's nice in a club atmosphere, but a little too smooth for my usually listening tastes. Still inarguably a great and talented performance by all.
It's fine. I'm not a big fan of jazz, and this album hasn't really done anything to change that. At the same time it also hasn't done a lot to make me dislike it Standouts Alice In Wonderland 3/5
Nothing like some sweet smooth jazz.
Smooth and mellow. Nice for quiet background music, I suppose.
Jazzy but background
Fine background music. Didn't make me feel much. 2.5.
3.5
Relaxation music.
Loved the jazz
Another album that I’d rather be listening to in a jazz bar than on vinyl
Good, smooth listening. Dude on the double bass was legit. A full album of elevator music gets a little boring. Solid 6/10.
too jazz too free
Pretty good Gret sound but today I had a long day and really didnt enjoy this as I should. Kind of listened to it tired and not paying attention so this rating should not be taken seriously.
This is very serious jazz. I'm sure it is very good. The drumming is immense.
Liked the authenticity and the rawness of the live set. The clinking of the glasses and chatter made this sound more like background music than the main event. Not terrible, but surprised it’s on this list.
I have to be in the mood for jazz, but once I was warmed up it was really enjoyable. I know nothing about jazz so I don't have anything intelligent to add. I liked it but don't know if I'd seek it out.
Easy listen, that is great background music 3/5
(FIRST TIME LISTEN) there were no lyrics or much to differentiate the songs from one another so i couldn’t really rate them overall rating: 2.5/5 i didn’t enjoy it personally because i don’t really like jazz or songs with no lyrics because i find it hard to connect to any of the songs. but, i can admit that the instrumental is incredible, especially the bass. genuinely felt like i was transported to a 20s american speakeasy
Background jazz. Great piano playing
It's jazz!
uhhhh this was pretty okay but it was probably helped that I had to do a bunch of repetitive tasks
Very vibey jazz, but a tad long overall, drops the score a little
Piano, drum and bass. Jazz, not drum and bass.3/5
This is some serious "cool jazz". It's goodish but very safe and predictable, which isn't necessarily my jam. Easy music for the background when guests are over for a winter cocktail party. 3/5
2.5
Listened Before? N Good white guy jazz. I enjoyed it but it's pretty mellow. Good background music for a restaurant. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Gloria's Step
Great jazz album.
But like two stars if we're judging based on its ability to captivate and hold one's attention, a criterion which it is too dormant and too genteel to meet. Pleasantly tingling and sophisticated background music otherwise.
jazz jazz jazz. :-)
Athmospheric, easy going Jazz. But still Jazz.
Decent music, but still hard to tell songs apart.
Don't usually listen to Jazz, found it hard to focus. But enjoyed the background noise of people enjoying the music and found the backstory of this being the last time they played together due to a road traffic accident created a feeling of time capsule
Alice in wonderland (take 2)
Hugely better than my expectations, which were absolute zero! Musically, it was really interesting and quite inventive, and it flew by very nicely indeed.
Jazz is really hard to rate but this is very good
Nice sound. But I remember none of it.
Jazz is not my go-to music, but this album was really good. I felt lulled into a different time. Great background music for focusing or haning out, although sometimes I did feel a bit startled by the actual clapping. A great album for a chill, nostalgic time.
I do like this. But it just feels like background music at an upscale wine bar. It’s not bad but I also don’t yearn for it. 3/5
I found a lot of this to be real nice. My kind of jazz. Super chilled and laid back, down-tempo, lo-fi. A bit moody, with some real atmosphere to it. Nice elegant keys and gentle backing bass. I'm not as much of a fan when it introduces more of a chaotic element in some songs, maybe more 'traditional jazz'? Drums in weird time signatures and the like. Overall, it was an enjoyable relaxing time while working. 3.5 rounded down.
This was an enjoyable listen, nothing more nothing less.
Music is great, and I get that it's live, but the talking in the background is unacceptable and not charming at all.
Excellent for atmosphere and an extremely pared down style, but it's not really for me. Maybe it's too subtle for my monkey brain, but I find it a bit boring, and there's a lot of had from the same era that I would pick before this.
Doo, doo, doo, da doo, doo, doo, bom, bom, bom, ba bom bee bee ba doo.
Not sure I'm qualified to say what's good jazz, lots of noodling as seems to often be the case with jazz. Nice enough to listen to though, sounds like something that would be playing in a swanky restauant.
Jazzy jazz
Not really a jazz fan. It's ok. Sounds like jazz. I guess it's good jazz, at least.
More of the basis of the sound of the music my parents listened to when I was a baby. Love this stuff. 3 stars
Probably not fair for me to judge, as jazz is a genre that leaves me cold. This is pleasant enough to have on in the background, but I couldn't imagine sitting down and listening to it.
Great jazz !!
yea, good album. Will pick it up.
Some solid/catchy songs- California dreamin, Monday Monday,
It is Jazz... I listened to it... I will give myself 5* As background music it isn't too bad, but if you have to actually sit-down and listen to it, then you might as well start cleaning the attic while you're at it.
Jazz in 1961 Easy listening.
Decent jazz. Not my favourite, but ok.
I like this style of jazz.
I’m not a huge fan of jazz so this one was a miss for me
Mellow jazz album. Was nice to listen to on a Monday mornging but nothing particularly interesting.
Soft jazz club.
The epitome of soft jazz.
Piano Jazz, 1961 -> 3
Not a big fan of jazz but this was ok.
I'm no jazz aficionado, but I do really enjoy some Miles Davis and other artists. I can tell this is technically very good but it just doesn't give me the same feeling as, say, Kind of Blue. It really just felt like one long song that didn't change that much and didn't resonate with me unfortunately.
i dont like the bass solos, im sorry, im a fake jazz player and lover
smooth and enjoyable
The songs on there are great by themselves but as an album it is lacking in variation and I found it a bit boring towards the end. Again don't hate the songs but rather the structuring of this album which is why it gets a 3.
I like the review that his piano sounds like "falling down." The bass and piano are heavy on this one and pulled my focus in. But there wasn't quite enough for me to keep it there.
This is a quaint, live jazz album from the Bill Evans Trio. Featuring Bill Evans, pianist and composer, and a bassist and drummer, "Sunday At The Village Vanguard" is lauded for their interplay and synergy. The unfortunate death of bassist Scott LaFaro only 11 days after recording these tracks left a deep impact on Evans and the jazz community as a whole.
An experience in escapism. With every key stroke and string pluck, that will never to be repeated, you are reminded of the absolute magnificence of these background music artists. My wife asked if it was on hold…
instrumental. chill. jazz
Im still not great Jazz fan but this was actually nice to listen to. Laid back and groovy.
Jazz halt. Klang aber ganz cool
Enjoyed. 3.5
All I can think about when listening to this is the show Frasier.
I don't listen to jazz very much. This is nice soothing music but it gets boring after a while.
Really makes you feel like you’re in a snooty jazz bar
I guess I'm a simpleton, but this album seemed on the safer side. Maybe I was expecting "more", especially since this was a live album. An easy and comforting listen, sure, but I was hoping for some more of that improvisational jazz "oomph". I guess listening to a few Miles Davis records skewed my view on this classic era of jazz.
Great as background. Sometimes it sounds like the musicians are playing their own tune....Doesn't seem to gel to my ear.
Pleasant but repetitive jazz. It had a little too much going on to be background music.
I don't have much to say about this album. But what I can tell you is that the bass sounds improvised. Also, I really like jazz so that's a good thing. It does get a bit boring towards the end. I can't wait until Monday for my next recommendation. I'll give it 3 stars.
Pleasant piano trio jazz. Bill Evans isn't my typical go-to in the genre, but it went down easy and I could give it a few more spins, easy.
I liked the piano. I liked the drums. I really didn’t like the double bass, especially when the solos trying to hit the high notes.
I’m sure I’m missing something with this album, love Bill Evans but the Vanguard album just misses the mark for me. Love Alice in Wonderland and Gloria’s Step but the rest didn’t hit me like other Bill Evans albums have
Bill Evans was sort of a blind spot for me, because he kind of siloed himself and his trio off from most of the other jazz greats of his era, but this was really enjoyable.
Not a big jazz fan (very hard for me to actively listen to), but this album makes for good background music.
Rating: 6/10 Very chill and pleasant jazz album, but every song sounds the same.
Nice jazzy set
I can't believe I actually got this on a Sunday. That is hilarious. I love getting weird little coincidences like that on this journey. Anyways, this is a solid little jazz album. It serves as good background noise and that's basically what my thoughts on this album amount to. The sound is nice. All of the instrument playing is good. The album length is good. It's not too short, but not too long. The live nature of this album really isn't all that noticeable. You kind of forget that this is a live album until a song ends and you hear the audience clapping. That's really the only live element to this, and that's okay. I'm not really a fan of live albums anyway, so I'm happy with this. The compositions are good. Overall, while this album doesn't stand out to me much, it also doesn't do anything wrong. High 3/5.
First date with jazz here, it’s a genre I have no idea how to review, I just think stuff either sounds good or bad. But this is definitely on the good side. Love the bassist, love the atmosphere, love that you can hear people and clinking glasses. God not to sound like I’m sniffing my own farts but there is something so romantic about hearing the people milling around, they really are this extra piece of improvisation. You can almost imagine the music is soundtracking their lives and it’s hard not to imagine what the audience members are doing with this soundtracking it. I think my only complaint, and it’s entirely personal preference, is I think I like quartets and quintets more, I like my jazz with brass or woodwinds. BUT that’s very much not the vibe here. But it's also boring...
Didn't impact on me in the way that Monk and Mingus did, but an enjoyable listed and music that I imagine needs to be heard and seen live to be properly appreciated. 3.75/5
Nice mellow Jazz album. Will definitely listen again
Just jazz. it took me a while to get round to this album… the musicians have great talent, its just not my taste, to much meandering. I wouldn’t listen again
My new favourite jazz album.
Nothing crazy but nothing bad. It's consistently smooth and groovy, but also just kinda there. It's great at being what it wants to be so positive points from me.
I liked the bass playing but nothing stood out to me here. Most of this faded into the background.
He's killing it in a way I probably don't understand, good study/work music
Chill jazz, good for working or studying.
It's an album
I'm always happy to hear some jazz on the list, but I feel like I need some horns or something else to keep me fully engaged, just piano, drums, and bass can get a little stale. The playing is great though, and the recording is too, just blends into the background a bit without something more going on.
Solid jazz
It's good music but god damn jazz is hard to get through sometimes
Great performances, this group has good chemistry and it really shows in this recording. Nothing really blew me away, though. I like more experimental jazz personally but this was still very good.
Cover Impressions: No clue what this is based on the cover. 60s has me thinking it could be traditional oldies style like Buddy Holly, but the cover guy being so old makes me think it could be big band kind of jazzy stuff like Dave Brubeck. Definitely was closer with the Brubeck. This album reminds me of riding around in the gigantic back seat of my grandparents Cadillac DeVille. It's very calming music for me, but the live claps and some distracting guitar noises kind of detract from the overall experience. I'd be interested in adding these to a home music playlist if there are some studio recordings. I wasn't able to keep track of which song titles were which, but I think one of the Alice in wonderland takes were probably my favorite. 3/5
I don't think I've ever heard of the Bill Evans Trio, but I'm not very familiar with jazz music, so I'm not surprised. Like pretty much all of the other jazz albums I've reviewed, this album was fine. I don't really have any objective ways to judge it, but it was fine to listen to. I did like that it was a bit more stripped down in terms of the number of instruments present, but I think that the simplicity really showcased how the form of the songs was structured through the interactions between bass, piano, and drums. Overall, this album was fine, and I wouldn't be opposed to revisiting it some day.
Appreciate the talent, but jazz is just directionless to me. Sounds like they are warming up.
I wish I knew more about Jazz to fully appreciate this. Was an awesome vibe though. I felt like I was in the movie Taxi Driver the whole time. I also loved how it was live so you could hear some distant chatter and the clinking of cups. Favorite track was My Man’s Gone Now. Did not add to Spotify library.
I like jazz and this made me feel like I was back in the 60s smoking a cigarette next to my right hand gal. However, I felt as if ever song was very similar.
This seems like very grown up music. Full of masterful musicianship and expertly played Instruments. I would definitely come back to this for chilled Sunday afternoons with a roast dinner and a glass of wine.
Did not hear completely
