It’s fine
Definitely one to give some more listens. My kind of music, that gothic post-punk is something i love, and was familiar with their debut album already, which is great. I think it could do with a little trimming down, maybe the version i heard had some bonus songs added onto the end, because the quality definitely dipped in the final few songs. Glad i listened to it though, will have to check out the rest of their discography some time.
Started out very promising, but in the end it felt like just another post punk album, that I was trying to power through. Nothing special.
Interesting album, wouldn't bring me back to listening to it again, fun if you like that gothy vibe.
3/5
Interesting from a music history standpoint
Me: "Mom, can we listen to Joy Division?" Mom: "We have Joy Division at home" Joy Division at home: Jokes aside, I didn't hate it, but a song about fish cakes was a bit too far for me.
3.5
Some serious powerhouse songs to kick this off, too bad they couldn't sustain the momentum. 🐶🐶🐶
Pretty good.
This was very '80s. I appreciate that it spawned a goth pop genre. Had flavors of David Bowie.
As background music this was fine. Didn’t pay attention too much, though.
More new wave proto goth. Not as good as the last.
Listened Before? N I think I might have liked this album better in the 80's. It's pretty good, but I just feel like there's a lot of similar better stuff that was released between 81 and now. Overall, not bad but not my favorite. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Kick in the Eye
Goth rock remains a genre that isn't necessarily bad but all the added "fuzz" just doesn't reach me and seems obsolete to me
Just generally quirky and peculiar. Not bad, just... fine
Very influential, but I've tried and just can't get into it.
Interesting, probably worth another listen
Småstrevligt album.
Am I crazy to suggest that I hear some Dead Kennedy's influence in this? Vocally on some tracks, and a little East Bay Ray spice, elsewhere. Black & white cover with yellow font...
True story: in high school gym class they made everyone pair off and choreograph an aerobics routine and then lead the class for a day. My partner (and fellow weirdo) and I picked Kick in the Eye as our song and put in several hours of sincere effort coming up with moves. Surprisingly our dance was a big hit. To this day I am proud of making a bunch of nice normal teenage girls into Bauhaus fans.
Þetta er alveg, já, bara fínt. Smá nostalgía.
This is stepdad jazz.
One almost has to be a child of the '80s for this to have much resonance, by which one means an actual child in the '80s (like via time travel). Otherwise, this just sounds like a relic rooted in time, antique music, if occasionally engaging in shadowy sort of way.
Eh. That song about fish cakes, though.
eclectic early ‘80s resembling elements of PiL/Joy Division/Cure/Talking Heads. At times really enjoyable funky dance bass locked in with tight drums. Generally too diverse covering lots of styles. Not bad, just too varied. A very low 3 stars
It's of a different style than I typically hear, and I like it. A bit of a mash-up of electronic, rock, pop, etc. Very cool cover, too.
Kind of fun. Also kind of shit.
Oh thank god I was worried there wasn't anymore british post-punk on this list. Pretty enjoyable all told.
A combination of Joy Division, Bowie, and Nick Cave. This was wild. A decent amount to like and dislike so I’ll call it a push. Title track was probably my favorite.
I liked this album more than I expected to. Reminds me of joy division/new order. did not care for the tracks with talking.
Alright
Hair of the Dog- 3.2 😟 The Passion of Lovers- 6.6 (might grow on me) Of Lilies and Remains- 5.0 😖 Dancing- 7.3💃💃💃(Thom Yorke Dancing) Hollow Hills- 7.7 👻👽☠️ Kick in the Eye- 6.4 In Fear of Fear- 6.7 (nice bass) Muscle in Plastic- 4.3 The Man With X-Ray Eyes- 6.5 Mask- 2.7 In Fear of Dub- 8.0 (good bass line again) Ear Wax- 3 Harry- 7.4 1. David Jay 2. Peter Murphy 3. Kevin Haskins 4. Daniel Ash- 7.5(what I'd imagine multiple personality disorder sounds like) Satori- 5.0
It was interesting and I could see where their sound was influential. Not really big on it though.
3 stars
Groovy feeling "goth rock". Nothing too notable
3 Bauhaus has been on my perpetual listen list for years. I think I first heard of them from the blink-182 song, so I figured it would be punky or at least influential to punk. I think there’s about half to 3/4 of a good album here, with the best parts sounding like Joy Division if they got the chance to continue with Ian Curtis, and without the impending doom of what we all know is to come. There’s some really interesting instrumentation going on with some equally interesting and dark lyrics, shown best during Hollow Hills, which paints an insanely grim and haunted picture. Kick In The Eye feels like the shot in the veins the album needed, but the energy felt short-lived. Everything past Man with the X-Ray Eyes I could take or leave. I can sort of see why people like this band so much but I doubt it’s their best work. The experimental song is neat, but I think I was just exhausted by the album’s length/complexity by the time the end came around. Where Joy Division feels like a funeral march, this feels like a party at the graveyard. Favorites: Hair of the Dog, The Passion of Lovers, Of Lillies and Rainbows, Hollow Hills
3.5 Fish cakes? Fish cakes. When I think of Bauhaus, I begrudgingly think of that Matt-era blink-182 song She’s Out of Her Mind, which has the lyrics “She got a black shirt, black skirt and Bauhaus stuck in her head”. Outside of that, all I knew was that Bauhaus is 80s goth music. And I kind of dug it! In some ways it felt like new wave bands of the era without many of the pop elements, with also maybe a bit of German industrial mixed in? There are also some absolute killer bass hooks that I couldn’t help but bob along to while working. Even the more droning ambient tracks kinda worked for me in the way they helped flesh out the album’s doomy atmosphere. I could see myself listening again… maybe after a shopping trip to buy some black nail polish and eyeliner. Favorite songs: Hair of the Dog, The Passion of Lovers, Dancing Also the lead singer vocally is basically Fred Schneider from the B-52s but goth - change my mind.
It was okay, might give it a few more listens.
Great originality and energy. I came in wanting to love it, but the style just doesn’t grip me, so I came out liking it.
This falls into that category of music I don't mind but also don't love. It's decent, nothing bad about it, but it also doesn't grab me for the most part. 3 stars.
Lyssnar hellre på In the Flat Field eller Josef K
Ok
Enjoyed this one but I guess expected a bit more. Feels like they had plenty of great ideas but didn’t really finish working on them or as if these are merely leftovers from other projects. Still, The Passion of Lovers is a great track. And I guess I expected more of the same, but didn’t really get it in the end. Overall I really enjoyed the cold winter vibes and I got to listen to it on the first day of snowfall which was just perfect coincidence and helped me immerse more into the atmosphere of the album. One thought I had while listening: it could use much more synths In the back. The additional material on the Spotify version is simply bad and completely superfluous. 3.5/5
So anyone gonna follow up on that fish cakes recipe?
Great texture, and a couple of decent songs. Bauhaus as a school of thought is all about how form follows function. This is more style over substance. Great style.
Murphy's vocals good, music good too.
Was not expecting the mid-album switch to hip-hop! 3 stars
Killing Joke
5/10. Thoroughly blah
I liked the couple of songs where they pushed the envelope further, but generally I felt that most songs were just worse than comparable ones from The Cure. 5/10
I liked the vibe, just wasn't too impressed by it.
Pretty trippy
Innovative but now sounds a bit bland
Yea it's not bad I suppose
Standard 80's experimentalist indie music. ok but not anything i would bother listening to again although fair play for having a song about fishcakes!
Honestly this music seemed pretty silly to me.
Crazy weird album, I think I like their newer stuff more though.
first listen NOT my thing
Bauhaus is not for me.
Quirky as hell. At times it's spooky vampire music, with a couple departures for island vibes. It's weird but I kinda like it. I don't know a thing about this band but if they've got anymore Dracula in Jamaica albums, I'd be down to try 'em out. Favorite tracks: Mask, Ear Wax, The Passion of Lovers. Album art: Really like the art style, as much as I normally think black and white is bland. Guy on the left looks like Walter White as the Joker. He's with an alien and a panda bear? What the hell is this album? 3/5
The vocals remind me a little of the weirdo theatricality of The B-52’s and the music is similar to the muscular and moody post-punk we heard on albums by The Cure and The Smiths. The band also reminded me of a more modern indie band that I like, Wolf Parade. Bauhaus was probably an influence on them. Overall I enjoyed this. It’s dark and a little wild. But I enjoyed it at a bit of distance. Cool to hear but nothing I’ll revisit anytime soon.
Pretty good, groovy album. I know that bauhaus was like an art movement that was very ~cool~ and avant garde, so I was expecting some art rock type of sound here and it's a little more straightforward than what I expected. I guess I thought it would sound more like bauhaus art looks? I so however think the tracks "Ear Wax" and "1. David Jay 2. Peter Murphy 3. Kevin Haskins..." do bit of this abstract sound that I was looking for. I do like the wacky synths on "In Fear of Fear". I do love the piano slams at the end of "Muscle in Plastic". I do like the weird panned plucked instruments (filtered guitars?) at the midway point in "Mask". This whole track is cool and sounds like the band Interpol to me (even though Interpol came out after this band). I do like the mostly~ bass solo track "In Fear of Dub". Oddly enough most of the songs that I like the most on this album are the ones with the lowest play counts on Spotify. I ended up liking the album more the further I got into it.
Similar vocal stlyle to the Sisters of Mercy. Not bad, but a bit dirgy - though an incongruous track about pancakes surprised me.
An elusive album, hard to pin down and find its core. There’s something good going on here but what it is I don’t yet know.
I haven’t listened to much of them in the past. This one hasn’t changed that.
An artist taking risks. A collection of experimental songs. Creative sound all over the album. Post punk at the top. It worth to be in the list.
Good kraut punk
Bauhaus are one of the fewer seminal 80s "alternative" bands that I hadn't spent a lot of time with. This album makes me feel the rest of the catalogue is worth some further listens. Overall a really solid sound. 3.5/5
Fine
Industrial post punk
Interesting tidbit: 3/4 members would later become Love and Rockets.
not bad
This feels like one of those albums that either a) your already a fan of the band and know their music or b) put this on as background noise just to keep you company while you do other tasks.
This was fine. I didn't hate it.
It's somewhere between Joy Division's mechanical gloom and The B-52's' quirky yelping. Admittedly that sounds like quite an eclectic mix, but having heard quite a few albums of this era now I'd say other groups seemed to be doing similar kinds of things at around the same time, but slightly better. The title track was my favourite. 2.5
I’ve never listened to Bauhaus before and I get the sense this probably shouldn’t have been my first taste of them. It’s okay, but maybe a bit melodramatic for my tastes.
Was best leuk eigenlijk.
High 3.
Some of the songs were groundbreaking. Some sounded like a dude with a synth on a dare.
I didn’t listen to it all, but I enjoyed the dramatic gothic sound!
New wave & post punk.
not bad
I wanted to like it more, some tracks were 100x better than others.
Ah, the first goth band. The lyrics were the best part, with the style of song delving into funk at times. I can’t rate the bonus tracks, though I did like them a little better than the album. A lot more of the “spooky reggae” sound that Bauhaus is known for, including a song about Debbie Harry of Blondie, and a recipe for fish cakes. Still not sure why this album was chosen of Bauhaus’ debut, “In the Flat Field”, which is more influential and arguably a better album. Still though, this album wasn’t bad.
I enjoyed this early touchstone in gothic rock more than I thought I would, and grateful it's not anything above 35 minutes, but I won't be particularly excited to hear it again. Bassist David J is like someone in fancy dress at a funeral: he's having a great time and keeping things entertaining where nobody else is. His accomplished basslines are the reason to hear (and revisit) the songs "Dancing", "Kick in the Eye" and "In Fear of Fear". Peter Murphy's vocals are very low in the mix and occasionally cut through ("Dancing"). They have next-to-no finesse or technique, but serve the songs and add to the gloomy atmosphere very well. Drums are primal and tight, ranging from tom-based patterns on the opening track to a bona-fide disco beat in "Kick in the Eye." There are some other highlights here: "Of Lilies and Remains" is a bleakly engaging spoken-word narrative with an interesting concept and lyrics. "Hollow Hills" is dark, brooding, formless- gothic rock at its most indulgent. It's the upbeat material that appeals most to me here, mainly on account of the bass-playing. The songs and the mood are solid, but it's one I'll have to be under a certain cloud to revisit.
ok dunkelt
Couple of good ones
"Muscle In Plastic" has good bass and drums and energy and stuff -Some cool bass lines and guitar sounds in "Hollow Hills" -"Kick In The Eye" has got a nice bass and drum groove -Not a whole lot making me want to come back to it
Brilliant drumming. Surprisingly accessible. 3/5.
I've never heard of Bauhaus before, but you can for sure hear how they've influenced later post punk bands and early goth rock bands. It's not my go to genre by any stretch of the imagination and I'm just not into some of the songs. But there are some absolute winners here.
2.9
Average album 3/5
Pretty fun
Strong 3, not my thing but definitely enjoyable
Mask is "experimental" in that inconsistent way where half of these tracks kind of kick ass, and the other half makes them sound like a goth rock take on the B-52s—which is something I wish I could say as a compliment. That being said, the album is propelled by the MVP work of Kevin Haskins and David J to the point that even the misfires usually have a sick bass line or drum pattern to latch onto while everybody else is doing whatever weird bullshit they wanted to fit into the record. It's solid, just maybe steer clear of those reggae-infused bonus tracks.
kind of a weird pick for this list, but still a fun look into a lesser known bauhaus album. the entire thing seems and sounds slapdash which is pretty cool when it works, which is less often than you want.
groovy and ghostly.
Entertaining enough
It's raw, dark, and distinctively gothic. Very true to the punk formula but really takes the "screw everything" to an entirely new level. Vocals are bad. Production is off. Instruments clash. This all sets a high level of dissonance and chaos that makes for a haunting listen. Perhaps a "so bad it's good" situation. However, I feel their previous album did this a lot better. This album is still cohesive but experiments too much without having the ideas flourish as desired. The first side is pretty great, and if the second side were the same, I would have given it 4 stars. The second side of the album is way poppier, feeling more like a "dark New Wave" people can dance to. "Kick in the eye" is great, "The Man with x-ray eyes" is decent, "Mask" is ok (too experimental but I like it), and "In Fear of Fear" and "Muscle in Plastic" are poor choices. Favorite tracks: The Passion of Lovers, Hallow Hills, Kick in the eye
Full of funky bass lines, this record is a window into the house I lived in, in 1981/82. This record was always on the turntable and caused my roommate to die his hair black, and start wearing eyeliner. It sounds a bit sad and dated now, but the memories are worth at least a three.
I had some Bauhaus on vinyl back in the day. I thought they were good but not great. My view hasn't changed.
glad I listened, wouldn't put it on again
solid, did not seem to distinguish from other punk rock.
no strong opinions from me
Rating: 5/10
Love the first song. Hard, but not too hard. This album's influence can be found all through out punk and hardcore I think. It gets really weird, not in a good way, at the end.
Objectively a great album. Not really my cup of tea.
It's interesting hearing the roots of joy division and the cure but didn't really think too much of the album, and the second to last song was super out of place
the fathers of goth rock, they're certainly influential, but it's not really my taste
Pretty much passed me by. It was on while I was in the garden, I don't remember hating it, but I wasn't comfortable making the neighbours listen to it. I did have sudden urges to do some south park goth dancing though.
Early 80s goth
Really enjoyed this
Take a Bau, son
Goddamnit Bauhaus. It's 80F on a Wednesday, the sun is high, the birds are chirping, and I wanna listen to LA BAMBA. I've been one album behind on 1001 for weeks, and I want to catch up so I can chop it up with the Mayo crew. No one wants to chat about Bauhaus the day after Bauhas was supposed to be reviewed. I try not to do this, but cheated and read Bauhaus' Spotify description, which says they're the founding fathers of goth rock. Well Bauhaus, get your architecture straight. Bauhaus is quirky and utilitarian and has nothing in common with Gothic style. Your music is Dada. C-
🐼
The Godfathers of Goff sounding not very goffy. Presumably there was already a goff backlash by 1981 that they were trying to avoid. The album is fine but is very post-punk by numbers in comparison to the originality of their early output. The change of direction is pretty understandable though, once you've released Bela Lugosi's Dead, toured in a hearse and risen out of coffins on stage every night you're probably just about running out of goff road to run.
Sucks it wasn’t on apple, but it was surprisingly varied so pretty good
Second half way better than the first bc of how experimental it is.
Not bad. Some cool sounds.
Interesting. Not sure what I expected but I liked it.
I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this album.
Not tuneful enough for me but I liked the spikiness and mood.
5/19 3.5/5. Dark, experimental, interesting goth-rock album. Standout Tracks: Of Lillies and Remains, Hollow Hills, The Man with X-Ray Eyes, 1. David Jay 2. Peter Murphy 3. Kevin Haskins 4. Daniel Ash, Satori
I know of Bauhaus but never heard them. This kinda industrial/EBM/goth stuff is something I'm both interested in and skeptical of. Some of it is cool, some is a real pain to sit through tho, especially the early stuff (and this is 81). Ok this is catchy, has that early industrial ebm kinda rawness but it's almost surf rocky in a way. I know it is at least close to predating the Misfits, but there's a horrorpunk vibe to it almost, at least the more rockabilly kinda end. I think it's just a shame the production is so dated - it sounds almost antique in 2021. Compare to an album like floodland, which was only 5-6 years later etc. Not too bad though, better than expected 3/5.
this was pretty fun but wasn’t locked into this today tbh
I’m mostly here for it, but I don’t think people like this record as much they claim to. It’s like Unknown Pleasures or matcha: cool to say you’re into it when you’re around cool people, but no one is partaking alone.
An okay album, no stand out songs.
out there. fish paste.
Bauhaus is a truly odd band. With most other groups, the way they construct their songs is not always obvious, but with Bauhaus everything is laid bare. It sounds like David J comes up with a simple bass line, Daniel Ash makes some strange guitar noises, Kevin Haskins pounds the drums and then Peter Murphy improvises something on top of it. All the way back to "Bela Lugosi's Dead", the approach is always the same. As a result, their music is extremely hit-or-miss, and even their best stuff sounds like it falls into the "even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while" category. *Mask* has a few high points, including "Hollow Hills" and "Kick In The Eye" but the bulk of this record of this sounds like four guys jamming in the studio and slapping it onto tape. Might have been fun to do but unless you're one of those four guys it's not that fun to actually *listen* to.
A couple of cool tracks mixed in with mostly unpleasant wailing and screeching. Not my jam. Favorite Track: In fear of fear
I like some Bauhaus songs, here and there, but a full album's worth of this tenor and tone really didn't do much for me, and I was finding myself very numb to it all.
Rhythm never quite caught on for me.
I can see why people would like it, sadly not my jam.
Interesting, but nothing I really want to listen to again
mid
I like Bauhaus, but this didn't sustain my interest.
var något
not really my kind of music
i'm happy it exists for someone, but that someone is not me
A lot of the songs sound the same. A few really stand out this I enjoyed Dancing very much and I laughed out loud in public while listening to that fishcake song
Not my jam, but the fishcake song (track 14) holds a special place in my heart. 2.5
Kind of like The Cure but just marginally less insufferable. The goth rock stuff really doesn't work for me, but it is interesting to a certain extent. The lyrics are bizarre and confusing, but they do make you think. And the fishcake recipe is helpful. Not my favorite production, composition, or performance, but the album cover is lit and all of this could be a lot worse. Two stars. Fave tracks: - Hair of the Dog - Kick in the Eye - Muscle in Plastic - Mask
I thought I would find this more interesting
This definitely did not have me Dancing.
Started listening first thing in the morning and wasn’t that impressed but decided to finish the album off last thing at night. Once that time arrived had no motivation at, all such was the monotonous nature of the album, to listen to it again. But a good thing came out of bad - for the first time in years I listened to Floyd’s Ummagumma in its entirety. I recommend you do the same. 2/5 18/5/26
I didn't really enjoy this album att all but I'm unsure about why. It might be the mixing with the singing being so low behind the drums or maybe the music style just isn't a good fit with what I like. No song really stood out as better or worse and I have already forgotten all of them an hour after listening.
no sabria decirte jashdh, muy experimental i guesss
Weird, sad noise. It had some fun parts, but overall, it was very mediocre. The sound quality was fine at best, but the whole album was extremely underwhelming.
Feel like i didnt like
Just okay. There's a lot of punk I'd rather listen to.
meh, esperaba mas 2/5
Mouaif
They have an okay post punk sound, but every song was either too repetitive or just aimless
no thoughts. some stuff was ok other parts were just kinda whatever. too long. 2.25
Meh
It is... not great... I'll look it up, there must be a reason it's a classic
Fish cakes Fave track: The Passion of Lovers 2
Fish cakes indeed. 2.5/5
Depressing
they play too much
I like the album cover. I can see how this band maybe influenced a lot of bands I really like, such as wolf parade, or interpol, but I didn’t really enjoy the album.
A little too 80s weird for my liking.
This was ok, but not even classified as good in my kind.
yet another meh album on this list.
Disco de rock gótico, un poco aburrido. No me gustó
Could've been worse.
2.5/10
Barulheira chata pqp
Aggressively unpleasant. At least it was short.
Very repetitive...not a fan.
I would say I was not interested in this really. I appreciate it probably means something to someone but not me. I didn't hate it.
Hasn’t really held my attention that much. I’ve ended up listening over a couple sessions which i think isn’t super fair to the album but also might be a bit of a reflection.
These guys were popular with the kids at the art college next to where I used to live. They shared the same sort of 'what we're doing is very unique, witty, and awfully important' attitude between them. I mean, they're fine, it's okay. Not much more than that though.
There's certainly interesting stuff in here, but don't find it that enjoyable
The passion of lovers, David Jay). A produção é terrível.
I better have some indie credits by the end of this shit. two
Love the cover art. Don’t love the album though
Like Joy Division, if Joy Division weren’t as good as Joy Division. The sound is definitely an attempt to emulate them, sometimes giving a decent imitation. Songs like Kick in the Eye give it a bit more range, but overall this is quite derivative and uninteresting.
I was interested to hear this, as the only Bauhaus song I was already familiar with was ‘Bela Lugosi’s Dead’, which I do like to an extent. My summary of this album: a worse version of Joy Division. It isn’t an awful album overall, but it’s definitely not for me. ‘Of Lilies and Remains’ really IS awful, though, and ‘In Fear of Fear’ and ‘Hollow Hills’ aren’t much better. Conversely, ‘Kick in the Eye’ with its almost funk/disco groove is probably the best track (it reminds me quite of Bowie’s ‘Let’s Dance’). Generally fine, but not really very memorable.
I can appreciate that these are apparently groundbreaking in the Goth Rock genre, however, there is definitely a reason that they aren't as well remembered as many other similar bands. Not a bad album, but really not that good.
There was nothing that I enjoyed about this album. There were two songs that had moments that I thought were cool. I like the idea of goth-wave, but new-wave is a very hit and miss genre for me. It depends on the vocals and the melodies, and I liked neither of those things. Also, the additional songs that were included on the CD reissue were much weaker than the rest of the album IMO.
Out of respect for Christina Pazsitzky I tried to give these guys a fair listen but this sucked.
I did not care for this.
Started off dreary but then lifted its mood to a noncommittal melancholy. Didn’t hate it, but a day after listening to it I can’t recall a single track specifically.
Really didn’t care for this. Vocals were not great. Music was ok. Reminds me of the Cure a bit but darker. Decent variety between the songs. (2)
Bauhaus wrote a handful of absolute bangers, but generally were a bit boring and certainly nowhere near, say, The Cure. Completely superseded by the bands they influenced.
Short and sour.

Bowie-esque, but weird does not always mean listenable.
Nice combination of all early 80s stuff. Weirdly nice but nothing more to say.
This should be in my wheel house - early 80's new wave/ gothy rock but for some reason its just not landing for me. A bit too sparse and empty and not enough tunes? Too much fishcake content? I doubt I will return.
Meh
Fine, but boring
Overall Rating - 2.47/5 (4.93/10). (15 Tracks) Had no idea what to expect. It was weird. Not going to listen to it again, but I don't regret being exposed to Bauhaus's music.
Certainly interesting. Never heard of the artist before. This kind of gothic rock doesn't really appeal to me.
Men nei. Absolutt ikke for meg. Svak 2, i grenseland til 1.
This is how you make fishcakes.
German thrash metal. Standard stuff.
I'm just not into groups like this or the Cure. The heavy synth lines and dark emo-ey lyrics, while distinctive, just don't do it for me. It's weird.
Not good
Some decent moments, but as a cohesive project this had too many down moments for me to give it more than two stars.
Not for me but better than I thought
No standouts
Not really my cup of tea, I suppose it's goth rock? The Man with X-Ray Eyes, really sounds like the cure, especially the forest. Mask was quite enjoyable, at least the did something a bit different with that track.
Appropriately gothic. Supposedly these guys have a cult following. Unfortunately I’m not part of it.
Reminded me of a depressed B52s. Not my kind of music.
Niche, but not in a good way.
I forgot to write my review during the day yesterday and this morning I have woken up and completely cannot recall it at all. No impact.
Just kind of weird. 2/5

I can appreciate the importance of and inclusion of this album on the list but it’s not one that I’ll ever listen to again. I can hear how this was an influential band/album but it was kinda boring to me. I also did not like the singers voice.
Það er kannski eitthvað þarna í hófi, en ég nenni ekki að bíða eftir því. Rosalega mónótón og lítið spennandi þótt þetta fari ekki í taugarnar á mér. Platan fær tvist og ég fæ að halda áfram með verkefnið.
altern. rock, 1981 -> 2
So eh 1.5
I sure hope this spoke to somebody out there cuz it didn’t speak to me.
This one just isn't my kind of music. It felt discombobulated.
Gothtastic or gothoriffic, depending on your personal proclivities
This gets a big nope from me. What the hell was that 2 ⭐️
Could barely listen!
It’s just so strange and uncomfortable, would never bring myself to casually listen to this
Only made it a few songs in before reverting back to yesterday's album (Tusk). Not for me.
Twin peaks from hell combined with a little bit of Bowie.
The songs may be ok but this production makes it hard to listen to. Thin and separated and all treble.
Bleh
4/10
This was quirky as anything so far. Some bits enjoyable, some bits weird as hell. But sort of liked that madness?
Not a fan.
I expected to enjoy this a lot more as I'm usually a big fan of post-punk, but this album just seemed like a collection of boring dirges that rarely went anywhere interesting. I probably would have enjoyed it more if I had more time to give it my full attention. Favourite tracks: Mask, Kick in the Eye
Honestly didn't enjoy it
I mean the album was OK but really not a fan of the whole second half with the experimental yelling vibes. There was a few decent tracks and good riffs, but did not enjoy it a lot.
A little more goth and avant garde than I prefer, but I certainly respect the talent with which they did it. Some songs were more accessible than others. One was downright impenetrable. But still, their talent was on display and is worth noting.
kind of like a mix of the Stones, Neil Young, and Iggy. i liked it!!
Two words: Fish. cakes.
What the hell was that? Top 1,001 albums I need to listen to before I die - really? This one is on the list?! It's not the worst album we've seen here... but it's pretty damn bad. I'll say 1.5 and I will round up to 2...
yes, i would like to listen to dentist noises today, Spotify
Whatever, I can see how this band influenced many future artists, but this is not my style.
Compelling at first but gets tedious fast. I’ve always struggled with this production style I have to admit.
Struggled to get on with this. Bit sparse for my liking (I'm quite behind. Looking forward to the Cure based on reviews so far)
BAUHAUS. Once again, not sure how it made the list. I thought it was ok, nothing stuck out as being particularly great.
I get what they were going for. Others have done it better before and after though. The highs on this album were few and far between. Making this a chore to get through.
2.5
5/10
Weird heavy bass lines but not terrible.
Never heard of these guys before today. It's kind of opera rock something the goth kids at my school would have listened to. It's not bad some of the music is really good. Nothing really struck home for me though. Maybe if I had hung out with the goth kids at my school and given this a chance things would be different.
Not a fan of these cats.
Not a big Bauhaus fan...
Didn’t know anything about these guys and based on some of the lyrics I was thinking early goth German band around the fall of the Berlin Wall. Guess I was wrong! Overall this didn’t do much for me but I did enjoy some of the instrumentation. The mix sounded kinda crappy though and didn’t like the singers voice. Wouldn’t go back to.
It was ok.
Couldn't make it through the whole thing. Muddy and dull.
I partially enjoyed the first half of the album (especially The passion of lovers and Dancing), then they lost their focus. Apparently the sounds and the themes of some of these goth and post punk songs inspired the coming artists
Well, I am glad I listened to this as I think I may have been confusing Bauhaus with the likes of Sister of Mercy. This was new-age punky, not so goth, and so at least I learned that. But, I didn't really like it. A 2 is harsh, but a 3 feels disingenuous.
not for me
Bauhaus is obviously a group of talented musicians, and despite the dark vibes running through this album, I get the sense that they had a lot of fun recording it. Flashes of brilliance ignite throughout the tracks, but unfortunately, I just don't like their output. It's been some time since I've rated any album lower than a three, but as I'd be happy not to listen to it again at any point in the future, two is all I'm going to give.
Overrated. Not terribly interesting. It might grow on me.
Not bad, but definitely not my cup of tea.
Repetitive, generic, and dull new wave just doesn’t do it for me.
I didn’t enjoy it and it had no redeeming qualities
boring
Q: Hvor mye storbritisk angst-rock må du høre på for å forstå musikk? A: Tydeligvis alt for mye... Igjen, hadde sikkert likt dette på halvti.

This reminds me of the first Eurythmics album. Hear me out. So much of this early-80s British music seems, from 45 years on, seems to suffer from an all-encompassing obsession with sound and a consequential disregard for the importance of songwriting. It's like the tsunami of incredible new acts that broke through in 77-79 motivated all of these art school kids to abandoned pop-art and form bands instead. But they hadn't spent their adolescences honing musical skills and so all of their energy went into sonic exploration - some good and some bad, but all of it artsy and half-baked. It also seems like too many of them were rewarded with record contracts from coked-out suits who knew that new was in, but had no clue why people liked it. The sound of the 77-79 output from the Clash, Elvis Costello, the Cure, Devo, the Ramones, Blondie, Television, Wire, on and on, was definitely novel and exciting. But the reason the world fell in love with that class, and continues to love their music is because their songs were - and are - great. These guys and the Eurythmics are perfect examples of this create a-sound-as-you-go movement, along with Teardrop Explodes, Jesus & Mary Chain, Everything But the Girl... P.I.L. seems to have been at the vanguard with Metal Box, and, hell, even Robert Smith abandoned his (incredible) gift for melody in '80 to focus on creating a new sound. The sound here was almost certainly interesting at the time. The music, however, is consistently not good. And the novelty of the "new sounds" became quaint fast; leaving us all to realize how sophomoric and haphazard the sonic exploration was to begin with.
I like the goth aesthetic way more than the music.
Even as someone who listens to a lot of goth rock and post-punk, every time I listen to Bauhaus' albums I just find their style tedious. The way they love to repeat an idea and stretch it for 3 mins, just never winds up clicking with me. I don't know, I think every other big goth band managed to do music that was far, FAR more interesting without making it tedious to listen to.
Do not take culinary advice from this band.
Right after being introduced to the dulcet tones of Debbie Harry and Blondie I get this. 54 minutes of these guys braying and yelling and moaning, what a buzz kill.
I’ll always remember Pete Murphy in the Maxell cassette advert back the the 80s. Good looking guy and probably the best thing he ever did. Because this isn’t. Not bad, but totally forgettable 2½
Not horrible, just not my thing.
That was interesting, though fairly experimental for my tastes.
Time to bust out the black lip stick and finger nails. I'm goth now
I don't get it. The whole post-punk, gothic thing. This album is a blend of like Joy Division and Talking Heads, but is mediocre representations of both. I can see how in the early '80s this may have been the soundtrack to high school gothics, but it doesn't do a lot for me. The production sounds bad. The music isn't very good. I know it's the "post-punk" sound, but to me, it doesn't sound too good. It isn't offensively bad, but I don't see a world where I come back to it. But like, it isn't awful. I can see how people could enjoy it. The whole style just isn't for me.
Performative nonsense.
meh
Not that great.
This was weird and some of the baselines were really cool, but I am not sure I liked it. I think I would have really liked this in my skin depression and been like “this is who I am now”, but I’m feeling better so it’s not
Interesting music, I can see how someone likes this but it requires very active listening. The mix placing the drums so far forward is also a bold choice which I am not 100% sure i agree with.
Basta bom, hilsen Rigmor.
Meh
3 from Sian 1 from Deb
Dreary, meandering
Quirky early goth - interesting, but not something I can really get into.
Pretty repetitive and poorly produced.
Some of this is good. Some feels like noise.
In a nutshell: your Halloween warm up album. Are there too many 80s albums with goth vibes on here? Perhaps. But this one is different. It's more experimental in my opinion. Overall: 3/10
Interesting stuff here, but not for me.
Cool production and unique sound but not really my vibe.
