Reviews (page 6 of 7)
While I don’t hate this music…..I’m not in love with it either.
Not their best…and for me they haven’t aged well no matter how influential
Not for me. 2 stars.
2.3 I feel like this flavour of avant-garde stuff isn't enjoyable sober, and there's 1,001 other albums I'd rather be listening to if I was high.
J'ai dû manquer d'écoute active, mais c'était plutôt désagréable. J'aime la musique discordante, mais là on pousse.
Couldn't get into it.
Confusing, unappealing, but at times intriguing.
Good
I found some of this appealing and I like their doomy sound in some tracks, but overall not enough to bring it past a 2 for me. Interesting for sure but not quite there.
2 - Nope
It's not hard to imagine that this album was influential in 1981, although, as another reviewer pointed out, "Juju came out 4 months before Mask... and Juju is a much better album. The music is interesting enough, if repetitive. The screeching guitar feedback and thumping toms start to blur from one song to the next. Unfortunately, I just don't enjoy listening to vocalists who don't sing. I had to force myself to finish this one.
Not my cuppa
Kind of like a European knock off The Dead Kennedys mixed with a splash of The Cure. I guess this is probably the equivalent of the Talking Heads for 80’s dorky goth kids. Not my favorite. 2.5⭐️ rounding down
I always thought I liked post-punk before this 1001 album foray. 🤷♂️
Well this is a weird album (fish cakes?). I've heard about Bauhus before so I guess I'm glad it's included on this list but just too bizarre to listen to regularly (or ever again). I was dragging by the end. 4.25/10 (2.125/5)
Dark rock/post-punk. The melodies are very bass-driven, with the reverb-heavy, high pitched guitars mainly adding accents that contribute to the atmosphere. It doesn't come together into something catchy or interesting though.
Bauhaus is overrated.
Really didn't feel like this needed to be on this list. Poor cohesion between ok instrumentals and awful vocals.
IDK what to make of this. Punk-ish, but also 80s-ish. It's ok, not sure what merits it being here. 2*
This is one of the most unmemorable albums I've ever listened to. It's not unlistenably bad, but it's boring. There are barely any interesting moments. Won't elaborate more, 2/5
Meh
Артхаусный рокешник не очень
Trying too hard at something but I don’t know what
I love postpunk and most bands of the gothic scene but never really cared for Bauhaus. Didn't change this listen Rating: 2.4
Weird, experimental shit. Not really enjoyable
Не, ничего хорошего
Has some pretty interesting stuff going on. Too bad none of it is that good.
I can see why this is an Important Artist for music history, but it's not super enjoyable for listening.
Not good
Didn't like it at all. Grim 80s rock, very depressing and not in a good way
2.5
Loathsome
An album that was interesting mostly because I was surprised the goth rock sound originated this early. That said, I've no particular fondness for goth rock so that isn't exactly a point in its favor.
meh
eh
5/10 Not for me
2.26
Moody, creepy and avant-garde. Some of the songs with drive and momentum are really good, though there are too many that end up nowhere and lost. Particularly when they went on about fishcakes. Best Tracks: - Hollow Hills - Kick In The Eye Worst Tracks: - 1. David Jay 2. Peter Murphy 3. Kevin Haskins 4. Daniel Ash Rating: 4/10
Pra quem está fazendo esse tipo de arte deve ser incrível mas para quem está ouvindo, nem sempre vai soar bem!
I didn't enjoy this album all that much. The vocals, though a bit weird and different, I didn't think were particularly nice to listen to, and definitely got a little irritating when getting through the whole record. There were some decent and catchy enough tracks with a bit of drive and momentum here and there, but the 'sound' of this album does get repetitive and boring after a while. Overall, a moody, slightly creepy album. Nothing I would actively seek out to listen to but wouldn't necessarily turn it off if it was playing.
Another one that I simply don't "get" I suppose....
no thank you
Just not really my jam. Some bizarre stuff on here.
Very boring.
Pretty boring, nothing I would revisit.
4/10 - not very enjoyable
listen I like goth music but I'm starting to question the sanity of the publisher of the list because this is not casual listening here
I imagine this is another album where you could probably rightfully get on my butt for not paying close enough attention to the lyrics, or enough attention in general, and that's why I didn't like this thing as much as I should have, but... Goodness, I don't know. I just didn't get anything out of this whatsoever. The whole thing was jus' kind of this sludge that just kept going 'til it didn't anymore. Whatever subtly great playing there was, or amazing turns of phrase that were sung — I just can't bring myself to care too much, frankly. To be perfectly honest, I don't know what I can say about this album that I haven't said about every other goth album my group has gotten. I just don't understand what exactly they see in this music so much. I guess it's my fault for not really understanding this subculture beyond just an aesthetic and huge boobs, but I don't think I should have to in order to at the very least enjoy their music. Certainly I don't really get emo culture, but I love a **lot** of emo music. Even the shitty stuff like Good Charlotte or Simple Plan get a kick out of me in the right song. I suppose the difference is just that emo music is often very outwardly emotional, whereas gothic music is more than happy to just sulk and get all moody in the fuzz. So, y'know, consider me more a fan of My Chemical Romance than The Cure, I guess. Like, seriously, just the fact that I've been able to dedicate those two short walls of paragraphs to only ostensibly talking about the album... That should tell you everything, shouldn't it? And it's not like I'm not giving these albums a chance; there **has** to be one out there that speaks to me. But I'unno, this one is just mush in my mind. I didn't hate listening to it, though, goodness, if I could have been doing anything else... I like the font Bauhaus at least? And I guess I'd rather listen to this than the Dream song? Gosh, I hope there's not too many of these gothic albums left... Wow jakie teksty mocne, ale nie mój vibe
Oh look, another New Wave/Post Punk/Krautrock album. I'm only 1/3 of the way through this project and I have heard three times more of this than I need to.
did we really need this?
snooze
I was expecting a lot more. No Bella on this one. It's too bad, as I like Peter Murphy's solo work and I like Love & Rockets (the band of the other 3 guys). Liked Songs Added: The Passion Of Lovers
This is so far out of my wheelhouse. However It played through at least three times this morning while I was reading so eventually I got used to it. Although it did grow on me, there were only a few songs that were melodic enough for me to halfway enjoy them. Too harsh for me.
It's a pretty creative album with a lot of nonsense-babble sounding lyrics. I found some of the songs unbearable, and the style was pretty all over the place. Tough to get into a flow with this one. Sort of a high 2?
Love that aesthetic, not that into the record.
Not for me.
Mmmmmh
che barba, onestamente
too goth
Ugh. 2/5
Not a terrible album a wee bit weird at times but not genuinely awful yet. But not much I enjoyed either
The Passion Of Lovers //
I don't think the production on this was that bad, but all the music felt all over the place and erratic-sounding. Hollow Hills was a high point and didn't really like much after that. That song's baseline sounded so similar to Nirvana's Come As You Are. Low 2.
What the hell was that fish cake song. Whole thing was weird. 2 stars.
Good bassist. Whole album was a little lackluster and dreary for me. Random reggae song was something. Two five
Looking at the album cover and type of music I thought this was going to be complete ass of an album. To my surprise it was only slight ass
This was definitely very... different. I had a fun time looking Bauhaus up and understanding the cultural relativity of what could have produced such an interesting band. They are named for an old German art school (so emo, so goth) and they formed in 1978 in Northhampton (wherever that is... Wikipedia links to England). This is their second album and Wikipedia states that "Their 1981 second album Mask expanded their sound by incorporating a wider variety of instruments—such as keyboards, saxophone and acoustic guitar—and experimenting with funk-inspired rhythms on tracks like "Kick in the Eye"." I can confirm they really expanded their sound. I would be curious to go back and listen to their first album which almost certainly has to be better than this. The Wikipedia page mentioned "Their 1979 debut single "Bela Lugosi's Dead" is considered one of the harbingers of gothic rock music and has been influential on contemporary goth culture," so I of course had to listen to that song. It was better than this album for sure.
Kick in the Eye is probably my favourite. Plenty of groove and reverb on this album.
p481. 1981. 2 stars. Average Brit Goth rock. Makes you appreciate Siouxsie and The Banshees. Bonus point for having a sense of humour.
Was ein Schrott. Der Fischcakes Text war so scheiße ich musste lachen. Knapp an einem Stern vorbeigerauscht.
Not atrocious, just not my thing
Not for me (-0__0-)
Skimmed
80s. Post-punk and goth aren’t my bag. The bass work is definitely the most interesting element. Other than that a lot of the elements are not for me. They’re the same, predictable and lyrically uninteresting. Bunch of sad 80s boys. These bassists needed a different decade.
Schwierig. Mir zu abstrakt und düster.
Punk music, a bit all over the place. The singer can't enunciate for shit. Stand-out: The Passion of Lovers
its nice that make a wish is now giving kids their own bands
Two stars only by virtue of it not being horrible enough for me to hate it or for it to make me angry.
Band and album were all new to me. Reminds me on "Sisters of Mercy". favourite: "Harry" 2,5
A little strange for me
Bauhaus is alright. There were 3 songs I saved to maybe try again in the future. I get the appeal it’s just not for me and while I respect the depth of some the lyrics (Mask in particular) it’s hard to get into this music fully when I am not actively being rejected by both sunshine and society. And then wtf is Harry lol I didn’t think I’d be skanking at the warehouse vampire rave but here we are. Almost tempted to go to 3 because I appreciate variety and depth of skill and expression but it’s so out of place. I would’ve like them to meld their differing styles a bit. Feels like they all had caffeine and a good breakfast one day and forgot they were supposed to be gloomy but left it on the tracklist anyways. Maybe it’s the drum machine that takes me out of it. Their music overall feels disjointed and like it’s lacking some soul or talent. Like I can’t believe they were emphatic about any of the drums. Maybe it’s meant to feel hollow and inhuman or something but to me it’s lackluster and indicative of a lack of vision or execution.
All over the place. There were a couple of decent songs though. Weird, but better than some of the 1 stars.
Anyone else randomly get a couple Rock Lobster vibes at the beginning and end of the album? I didn’t dislike it but it definitely isn’t something I’ll come back to listen to again, especially with its length. The rest of the album being at least decent to listen to saves the fishcakes song from dragging this down to a one.
Rejected
Interesting sounds. I guess it was ahead of its time in the whole Gothic Rock genre. I liked the production and I had heard of Bauhaus before, so I really wanted to enjoy this more than I did. Unfortunately None of the songs really grabbed me.
Nah
That's a no from me dawg
Gothic rock ain't my jam. It didn't suck, just wasn't really any good.
Not a grim as I thought. Production seemed a little muddy. Lacking the vocal distinction of some contemporaries.
**An ok album nothing I enjoyed, but sure someone else might.
I didn't really like this one for some reason. Which I found odd because I liked the Bela Lugosi record..
I prefer later goth records that really turned up the dramatics.
The album started out OK, but it ended rough. Ear Wax is hard to listen to. So is the "fish cakes" song (next to last on the album).
I really wanted to like this more than I did. All the ingredients are there, it just never came together into a solid meal for me.
I sort of knew that an artist called Bauhaus would sound like it does. I found the whole sound offputting and anxiety producing. Hard to "enjoy"? Awkward.
Erm, hard to define. Hard to tell if I enjoyed this or not.
Why did the bands in the 80s think they could just "sing" monotone through a whole album? It's so boring and uninteresting. Even the instruments are boring and somehow monotone. The last song was the best one; there was no vocals and it sounded like a little jam session. I don't think I like any of the albums where the word "punk" is mentioned in the artist bio. Two stars but only because I can appreciate Bauhaus' effect on music.
In my second year of university I wrote an essay on Bauhaus. I didn't particularly like abstract art at the time and did dread it, but an assignment was an assignment and I took my lack of investment as a chance to learn. Quickly I became enamoured in all the modern art of the time, not just in Germany but in Denmark and Russia as well. It really was a special time to be a creative with raw experimentation and a lot of pushing boundaries. When it came to third year and my chance to write my dissertation I decided to write a follow up comparing the art of abstraction with the rise in video games and how some indie games are the modern day interpretation of things like Bauhaus. The idea never hit me to look into music as I wasn't that big of a music person at the time, but I can't help and think if I did stretch to another modern interpretation I would have found Bauhaus a lot sooner and would have known that this album would disappoint me despite the artists name. Favourite track: Of Lillies and Remains.
Not for me
No, not for me. If I want gloomy and dark (and I often do), then there are so many bands that do this so much better. It does get a bit of a groove on at times, when the lead singer gives us a break, and that’s when it’s at its best.
Not as bad as I anticipated it to be, but it really goes to show the author was out there just digging deep at random records to fill out this album. It's not my cup of tea, but, it was a damn of a sight better than some of the similar genre album's I have had. It didn't pain me to listen, but wouldn't say I got anything out of it either. Really curious how this project is going to mess up my Spotify wrapped in a few weeks :-)
Very much that mid- to late-80s sound, with maybe a bit of Frank Zappa influence mixed in. Mostly forgettable, though.
It's genuinely impressive that the one album can consistently make odd 180 degree turns between the genuinely interesting and *incredibly* annoying.
More like Boo-haus.
Not sure what to think
Super sloppy production and poor mixing—most of the songs are overtly underwhelming. Nothing against goths, but Bauhaus is definitely not 'one of the best' in its genre.
Boring, dull, uninteresting, etc.
Hair of the Dog is ok, rest of the album felt like track 6 ( Kick in the Eye) won't be listening to these boys again
Post-punk, gothic rock, experimental. Rollo
The school of Bauhaus sought to create practical objects that have the soul of artworks. Sadly the band of Bauhaus did not adhere to this philosophy as their austere, angry, dour music is utilitarian and lacks beauty. It’s the sort of music I would have revered as a late 80s teenager but today it seems distant and dated and of its time. The modern world is barren enough without adding to its bleakness. Let’s leave the band of Bauhaus as a curio of yesterday.
Not crazy about the sound on this one. Didn't give it a very close listen, but the only thing that caught my attention was fish cakes. 🐟🎂😵💫
“Bela Lugosi is dead” has long been a fave. Their debut ”In the flat field” is also great. “Mask” is disappointing and dated post punk experimenting. Thin and annoying sound.
Got next to nothing out of this entire album
Novel but I didn't really want to listen to it
Definitely some goth rock. Not terrible, but not my first choice of listening.
Erm .... what was that? Hello?!? ... Never mind. 2/5
It's ok
Some of it was good, but overall not very enthused.
I liked the title song but not much else
I'm sure in 1978 this would have lit me up. In 2024 I can't imagine myself listening to it more than once - and then only because the 1001 albums generator told me to.
I was really not into this
It's so shitty that somehow it works out. It is dark and goth with crappy vocals.
Didn't really work for me. Maybe it was really influential or something. But I don't plan to listen to this again.
Meh, it was okay—suitable but forgettable background music. I did like the second to last track though!
It wasn't awful, it was interesting in spots, but it was still decidedly not my jam. 2.3
After 1 listen, I’m not enjoying the almost spoken word singing and the music does nothing for me. It’s not bad enough for a one, so 2/5 it is.
like a poor man's The Smiths I guess?
I did not like this album/band/music.. Assuming “Bauhaus” was a big influence on “RadioHead”.. and I personally would rather listen to RadioHead for some “sad bastard” music.
This is bauhaus?
- lots of variety of sound - don’t love the voice - a little all over the place
This was not what I expected when I read Gothic Rock, seemed much more New Wavey to me. Was not a fan of this, I enjoyed a couple of tracks but this was mostly a miss Highlights Kick in the Eye The Man with X-Ray Eyes
Fik ikke så gotiske vibes, som jeg havde håbet på, det var væsentligt mere new-agey.
A little hard to listen to
Eher gewöhnungsbedürftig. Trifft nicht meinen Geschmack.
Bauhaus’ Mask is just blah. There is nothing good to say about this listen, to be honest; there is very little interest throughout the album for me. I like the album cover and the figurines in it. It felt way to Punk-inspired, and Punk, for me, is a really hard style to perfect and construct a good album in. With that being said, some were way better than others, like Kick in the Eye and Dancing. Still not good, though. All in all, Mask is a horrible album. Best Song: Kick in the Eye Worst Song: Hair of the Dog
so much dogshit on this list. The 80’s were the worst decade for music and this is another steaming pile.
Hard to rate for me. Can see what they were going for and sometimes it's interesting and sometimes falls flat. Best song: passion of lovers 3
Not my thing
tough one here. a couple songs i liked and couple that i had to skip. overall this is a 1 or 2 for me. liked Mask. Skipped the last 2.
I'm usually down for these strange & quirky albums, but this was a little too out there for even me. The group's sound is one thing I found interesting though; with hints of Joy Division, Talking Heads, and even the B-52's in terms of vocals.
Yet another example of what I believe to be pure mediocrity polluting this list
Completely overrated.
Meh, moody, some of it quite tuneful - nothing stood out and it felt quite long. Not for me.
Just ok
Damn bad
scuffed
Rating: 5/10 Meh.
Alternative, not special
Largely forgettable, but not terrible. Felt like I was listening to some rando band's homemade demo tape they made on a casio tapedeck.
I was hovering between a 2 and 3 but overall this just felt too dark and choppy for me.
Not the best or worst new age album
Struggled to get into this really. Plodded along steadily and then some strange Ska tune emerged which was a bit weird.
i wish i was the kind of person who liked this. but i am not. i did not enjoy this at all
I liked some of the instrumentation, and some of the songs grooved, but I just can't stand that 80s style of singing where the singers voice is almost a monotone on each pitch, and very nasally. It sounds whiny and I cannot stand to listen to it, it really bores me.
Was okay
No mate, it's the weekend. I really don't want to feel that gloomy. I managed a few songs. I should try harder since they are original and influential, I just think they influenced other artists I don't care for also.
Post-punk, gothic rock, experimental. Rollo.
I dig some early Bauhaus but this wasn’t it.
Very dark and broody. I liked the guitar work a lot. Vocals weren't my favorite. Solid album.
mid
Not enjoyable. Okay at best. The indie sound of this album is diminished when it’s so damn quiet, still it sure if that’s just me. The vocals were pretty boring and the instrumentals didn’t do much for it either. DNF.
Ugh. Not to my liking. 1 song started out with appeal, which quickly faded.
C Hair Of The Dog 2 Passion Of Lovers 3 Of Lillies And Remains 2 Dancing 2 Hollow Hills 3 Kick In The Eye 2 3 In Fear Of Fear 2 Muscle In Plastic 2 The Man With The X-Ray Eyes 3 Mask 3 I liked the...album cover? Can I say that?
Listened to this while playing Set A Watch. Meh. I didn't hate it, but I definitely wouldn't ever throw this on again willingly. It reminds me of when Adam (or Steve) is a gay goth kid in Adam & Steve. I'd rather watch that movie than listen to this album again right now.
got bored on track 6
Rock gótico experimental. No me ha gustado. Un 2.
Given this one a few gos, I don’t hate it, but really just getting a poor man’s Joy division from to it, going for the same vibe but doesn’t produced the same level of production so just doesn’t work as well. Not one I’d be recommending to people hence doesn’t make the criteria of deserving being on the list.
This sounds like a more punker version of Joy Division. Not better tho.
kind of annoying
chinese bear
Fitting music for the Halloween weekend. But there’s better music
Right off the bat, this record is mixed horribly. I thought something was wrong with my headphones because I really had to crank the volume to hear the music meaningfully. The tracks are drenched in reverb as well. I couldn't really get into the lead singer's voice. I think that Bowie fans might enjoy this one more because it reminded me of him. Still an interesting listen, venturing into the goth rock/post punk scene a bit. Just wasn't for me.
I enjoy the gloomy, minimalist sound. The vocals are not my thing. But I like the mood of the music.
Weird tone for me. Felt a little too wacky and a little too serious. I liked what seems to be a new sound for me in gothic rock. Fav song: 1. David Jay 2. Peter Murphy 3. Kevin Askins 4. Daniel Ash
Qué hueva.
Nope
It was alright but I'd take it or leave it if I'm honest.
Never listend to Bauhaus stuff before, opening track was simply the Peter Gunn bass riff with hair of the dog lyrics and vocals layed over it... and i couldn't determine if the lead vocalist was trying to be Bowie, Frederick William Schneider of B52s, or David Byrne of Talking Heads.... but either way, he didn't master any of them and i simply did not like his vocals. It's not the worst post punk album I've ever heard.... but then again... its just not great either.... but I sure as hell won't ever play this again.
This sounds like someone having an argument with a robot. I didn’t hate it, it knows exactly what it is doesn’t it? Won’t listen again but it was alright while it was on.
It’s not the cure or joy division
This kind of music is really hot or miss with me. This one was a miss. I liked "Harry" though, good groove. 2/5 Wouldn't listen again....except "Harry"
Very weird
Bauhas taustalla
In the Flat Field oli muistaakseni parempi, tässä oli vähän liikaa turhaa hörsköttelyä.
This was okay. It had the dark energy of goth music, and it definitely has that "haunted" quality that tends to be synonymous with goth music. That said, it just wasn't that entertaining.
Listened to a few songs, not really my thing.
That was pretty rough.
Meh
Kinda meh.
I can't really get behind the vocals; it's chaotic and rough. Some instrumentals are similar, some use more common patterns. It's an interesting piece of art. But I'd never want to listen to it on my own or in a group even
Me: Why can't you just be normal?? Bauhaus: FISHCAKES. FISHCAKES.
Mask by Bauhaus is an album that delves into the depths of darkness and explores twisted sonic landscapes. Released in 1981, it is a testament to the band's gothic and post-punk sound. While I appreciate their artistic vision, I found the album to be a little too dark and twisty for my personal taste. The songs, like "The Passion of Lovers" and "The Man with the X-Ray Eyes," embody a haunting and eerie atmosphere that might not resonate with everyone. However, the band's musicianship and Peter Murphy's distinctive vocals cannot be denied, making Mask an essential listen for fans of the gothic rock genre.
It was some interesting music.
2.5/5 Eh. Might be ok after I hear more of it.
Meh
bit disappointed with this to be honest. I only know Bauhaus from Bela Lugosi's Dead and I think they covered Ziggy Stardust, but haven't heard much on Mask that is that memorable. Can hear traces of Gang of Four and some gothic guitar in places, but overall I found this quite dull
Not a good album. Too raw and seems unfinished.
I can hear the influence, and understand why those who like it would love it, and there are a couple of good tracks, but as an album, I won't be rushing to listen again any time soon.
Kokeellista rockia. Sinänsä taas ihan mielenkiintoista mutta en mää tätä kuuntelis
Not my jam
The respect for this album being from 1981 and considered gothic rock is a bit tame forty years later. The campiness of the 80s, and the weird disco inspirations of the 70s make for an interesting set of grooviness that makes the sound of this album not as dark as gothic has become understood to be in the 21st century. That being said, if for purely historical reference this album is an education in observation of how far music has come.
Mid
kind of a weird album
Hmmmm. The cure did it better. Cool for early 80s. Declined towards the end, why does one of the last tracks sound like a mighty boosh number?
not bad, just not really feeling it. feels very of it’s time. a 2.4
ehh.. ok I guess
Like a less catchy The Cure
I happened to see Bauhaus live three times by accident. In all three cases, I thought that I liked Peter Murphy, but that the songs, even the good ones, were way too long. That is my review of this album. Too long song's for what is in them. The audio quality is great though and it's aged as well as it can. But I was bored. And Bella Lugosi's Dead isn't on this one. So there wasn't much for me to sink my teeth into.
The only praise listed on the Wikipedia page for this album was that it was better than their first album. Going to start hate rating these late 70s early 80s European post punk new wave albums
Thought would be more avant garde but wasn't. Still unremarkable.
Rock gótico experimental. No me ha gustado. Un 2.
Post-punk, gothic rock, experimental. Rollo
Some interesting grooves but I mostly didn’t enjoy this. I think I’d need more context to know what this album is about to fully appreciate it
This sounds like a bunch of bad songs that the Talking Heads rejected
Listens: 1 Enjoyed: bits and pieces The album doesn't start off great. The style of Hair of the Dog threw me off. The change in vocal style across the album really confused me. I feel he nails it on some but others just let down the decent backing. However I do feel this would grow on me after a few listens. It would be a high 2
what
bof, c'est vraiment moyen, il y quelque tounes qui sortent du lot mais a part ca ca ma vraiment pas fait ripper. 2.75
Just OK
Yeah, nah
A lot of this was actively unenjoyable (looking at you, FISH CAKES song), but there were a couple that will go into my rotation. In my quest to find something redeemable, I started listening to the drummer, who was doing some interesting things, as if he were a part of a different band in a different dimension. Best track: Mask
It's...something. I don't know how or why it's in the top 1000 list, it's weird, not terrible, not good, not memorable. Not groundbreaking. Kind of a waste of an hour.
This is pretty beige. Weird staticky start into some drums which sounds interesting, but it really fades into background music pretty quickly. Vocalist is crap, production mix is a bit weird so you can't really hear them anyway. The overall sound is actually quite good (if not that exciting) but the vocals really break it and don't seem to fit well with the rest. 2/5.
Sort of boring, sorry Bauhaus, I really tried.
Moody.
Vocalist makes a big difference. Even though the music is fairly high-energy, the delivery made me bored.
Wel oké, niet mijn ding
I kind of couldn't wait for this to be over. Just low tier new wavy and sounds like alot of other new wave of the era, just not as good at all. 4/10.
Not really my thing. I feel like this type of music, while new and different at the time, hasn't really aged well.
Didn’t finish, I don’t like punk. I’ll finish one day
Best Song: The Passion of Lovers. The least Buffalo Bill of all the tracks. Worst Song: Muscle in Plastic. I guess that was intended to be a jazzy interlude, but it just felt like noise. Overall: An hour of overly serious 80s nonsense. None of it is very good.
This CD starts very poorly. The first couple tracks are no good, and kind of slow. This band is noisy- like what the hell is that sound like an EKG they have going 24-7 on “Of Lillies and Remains”? Just about every song has some kind of unpleasant, vaguely identifiable noise in the background, which is more distracting than anything. That’s exacerbated by their singer, who’s very limited, with an abrasive, shouty voice. About midway through they start to find their footing- “Kick in the Eye” is the first solid track, a fun, fast, white-boy-funky danceable tube, only mildly marred by dissonant sound effects. That must’ve been the start of side 2 on the original record, but they should’ve put it first (probably should’ve had side 2 first, it’s better). Even that runs out of steam too though- “Muscle in Plastic” is incredibly unpleasant noise. I’m right on the fence for giving this a 1- but it does have the core of some decent indie garage rock, if they’d just cut all the noise rock impulses.
Skimmed, but not for me
While I enjoyed some of the individual tracks here, I never felt as though they gelled into a coherent LP. The mixture of grungy guitar and synths + abstruse songwriting is usually a winner, but a few annoying vocal choices and lack of cohesion derails this one for me.
Dette ga meg nada
Too weird and English 80's for me
This was a weird ass album but also a totally average English rock album at the same time. It sounded sorta punky and of its time but also sounded super stripped down yet not quite experimental. Idk man I didn't hate it but also didn't really enjoy it.
pretty noisy and chaotic at times but not in the fun jazzy way. other times its just very boring and too reserved. The only consistent aspect was the vocals which I disliked the entire time. Take a fish And a potato Hold the fish And the potato In your hand In your hand Put the potato In the fish Make it digest it Smash it up Smash it up Smash it up Smash it up This is how you make fishcakes This is how one makes fishcakes Smash it up Poke it up Fishcakes Fishcakes Fishcakes Fishcakes
Really couldn't get into this one. It sounded really boring. The very weak production didn't help. Also, fish cakes.
very strange album, the description above calls them an english gothic rock band and to me that is a recipe for disaster. At least in terms of the greatest albums of all time. Does not belong on this list, no matter how spooky they are trying to be.
old school punk
didn't do anything for me
Esperava mais.
Ehhhhh. Maybe it's better if you're in exactly the right headspace.
Goths are implicitly kooky, but too much of this album is straight up wacky.
Definitely some different and interesting things going on stylistically, but it just wasn't for me
After the first 2 songs, I thought I'd enjoy this album some but it got so repetitive. There wasn't anything interesting in any of the songs.
This is a forgettable, generic 80s album for me. It’s fine but not special.
Groovy bass lines can't save an album this bad.
Nope
couldn't finish it
Haunted goth sound, very early 80s. not a far four songs in but still willing to give it a chance. So far I'm not enjoying this album. May give some of their other albums a listen but this one wasn't one of my favorites.
not as interesting as other albums in a similar genre
Often a second listen helps me to appreciate an album more. It made it worse today. Sometimes a few decades help. Bauhaus was the favorite band of my first college roommate in 1986. I tried then, and I tried today. What is one supposed to feel when one listens to this? And is that something one would choose to feel? *sigh*
Another one that I don't think is for me. There is some interest for me with the music, maybe parts in minor keys are intriguing. But that wasn't enough to put this album in the keeper pile.
There were certainly some interesting points and a few fleeting, catchy moments - but most of the time I spent wishing it was over. I did not enjoy listening to this the first time through, and grew increasingly irritable as I slogged through a second listen. I have no desire to hazard a third.
More bouncy and fun than Joy Division but not as bouncy or fun as The Cure. I prefer Joy Division and The Cure
The typical goth kids trying to ape Bowie and smoking clove cigarettes sing about nasty things. Just listen to Bowie or The Cure instead. They still remembered the tunes. Best Tracks: The Passion of Lovers; Kick In The Eye; The Man With X-Ray Eyes
Het was er ook gewoon de dag niet voor.
Er zitten ook leuke stukjes tussen, maar over all vond ik dit niet voor herhaling vatbaar.
Couple of good tracks. Better albums by Bauhaus and better albums by others bands in 1981
So this is what I’ve been missing out all this years… quite forgettable
I do not dig it
Not for me.
So i'd listened to this when it came up a couple of months ago and forgot to rank it. That's because it's quite forgettable. So i've re-listened to it. It's how i'd imagine a soundtrack to East Germany (done by a 1981 English band).
Not too wild about this one either
Toisaalta kyllä tuolta pari ihan menevääkin rallia löytyi (Kick in the eye, In Fear of Fear). Silti kaksi kuuntelukertaa riitti mielipiteen muodostamiseen.
Not really my thing
Didn’t really know what to take away from this album. Felt Like it was all over the place as an alternative album. There were parts that were harder rock and others that felt more foreign and indie style. Overall it never really gelled together and felt messy. 3.6/10
Dystert, eksperimenterende 80’er rock, nyskabende
Post punk. Gótico. Extraño. Aburrido.
A band I have heard of, but can honestly say I never listened to before now. Sadly disappointed - the name invokes something on an industrial scale, this is more small workshop with employees who only want to talk about the poor performance of the local council
Fair
Didn't grab me at all. I haven't read why this album is in the list yet so I may miss its historical significance
I get that these guys were innovative and unique for the time. You can definitely tell they influenced a lot of my favorite 80s bands. That said, this album didn't really do anything for me.
I think the vast majority of people who know Bauhaus are really only familiar with "Bela Lugosi's Dead". But since that single never made it onto an album, 1001 serves up this LP to pay hommage to these pioneers of Goth. I like Passions of Lovers but which reminds me of Joy Division, the next track is edgy and reminds me of the aforementioned Bela, but the rest...
I was hoping this album would feature their cover of Brian Eno's "Third Uncle" as its my fav Bauhaus song, but no such luck. Unfortunately this album didn't have anything to hook me and I think The Cure and Joy Division were much better at the Dance/Goth thingy. I also penalize it for sounding so dated today.
Meh, pretty boring. Sounded a little like devo and talking heads combined possibly?
I'm not a fan of Bauhaus the art movement, Bauhaus the band, or even Bauhaus the font. It's all too tryhard. This album is no exception. It's trying so hard to be dark and gritty but without committing to the bit. Ultimately, this is just bland British take on a boring German art movement. The end result sounds like someone dropped their doomcookie in the schoolyard sandbox. And just like that sand-covered cookie, it's unpalatable.
Not good at all
Definitely not my style
While I do not find myself very engaged in the goth-rock theme or aesthetic, I was not entirely unconvinced by this effort. I appreciate the distinguishments shown in their style, in contrast to their contemporaries, Joy Division and The Cure, which I found to be a bit too aggressively poppy in parts of their discographies. However, I do wish Bauhaus went a bit further in vocal energy to showcase their unique style. Only on the Passion of Lovers did I find the vocals engaging, the rest is passable but not enough for me to be greatly memorable. On the instrumental-side, David Jay and In Fear of Dub are absolute highlights in their orginality and composition. Overall I feel a 2/5 is deserved.
most of the songs I didn't like, some for the music, some for the singer
just overall weird. not a great super fun vibe and it was just not my favourite
I don’t know what this is. Wikipedia tells me this band is knowns for their dark image and gloomy sound as one of the pioneers of gothic rock. Its not bad per se but I just can’t see a time I would ever choose to play any of this music. I guess it seems fitting for Halloween or a haunted house. 1.5 starts due to being so niche. The extra half of star is for the weird experience of simultaneously not disliking it while never wanting to listen to it again.
Was mildly interested in listening to this - I think the only song I'd ever heard from Bauhaus was "Bela Legosi's Dead" which is 9 minutes that should be 2, but I'll give them a pass since I think they were each like 7 years old when they recorded it. Quick research shows this is their second album and being Goth "pioneers" this was apparently where they expanded their sound. It's ... weird. Which was expected. It's also very 1981 which is neither good nor bad but the sound/production alone makes it very much of its time for what that's worth. "Of Lilies and Remains" reminds me a little of some old Gang of Four with the aggressive guitar parts. Overall it's definitely appropriate that I'm listening to this in my darkened basement :) - it's not bad at all, although I can see how some people might loathe this. I prefer [vocalist] Peter Murphy's later highly melodic and darkly catchy solo hit "Cut You Up" much more as this album is more experimental and aggressive/noisy. In the end it definitely does what it set out to do and invoke a very cold/dark mood - i.e. they're good at what they do but aside from a knowing nod if I hear it anywhere I doubt I'd go out of my way for this outside of Halloween :P 5/10 2 stars
Amazing. Not
Nichts schlimm wie befürchtet
Started with a 4 star and by the end of it I was ready to rip my ears off.
Sounded like bad Joy Division. 2 star for some of the bass playing in it, singing and lyrics are not for me.
