Reviews (page 4 of 7)

It’s now much clearer why we have Bloc Party

oooo sparkly vampiric ... archi bros?

Triggers a Republican because of their orange cult leader.

Maybe something here if you're in the mood for it.

interesting sound, not necessarily for me but a solid 3.5

Played this while I'm working and it's a vibe!

Not really had much like this on the list. Only knew the epic Bela Lugosis Dead before, which doesn’t appear on this album. As the album went on I found myself enjoying it more, a bit more upbeat that I expected from gothic punk. That said nothing really to right home about, of its time, deserves the be here but nothing more

Loved the bass. Everything else was a bit shit. Got old quite quickly

Didn't love this album. I'm not totally against the style of music, and some songs did work for me, but there were too many that I found boring and that failed to do anything for me. I felt as though some of the experimental stuff kind of failed and a few particularly poor tracks in the second half of the album left me very much underwhelmed. Obviously apart from the fishcake stuff which was profound. Positives - some interesting instrumental stuff, the first half of the album had some great tracks. Love the urgency of the vocals in Hair of the Dog along with the stripped back drums and the driving bass. Great when the heavy distorted guitar switches into a screech. Holllow hills is the right amount of mysterious. The chorus of The Passion of Lovers is great , a real hook and a proper volume up moment. Peak vocals. Definitely my favourite track. Overall 6/10.

Interesting listen from a band I had literally never heard of. I enjoyed almost everything for it's very specific vibe, but didn't take away any stand out songs. The sound was a mix of 80s synths and guitars with B52s-esque vocal stylings. I don't think I've truly listened to what is truly considered 'goth rock', on thinking about it, that's a label I would expect The Cure to fall under. Perhaps they do? Anyway, the eccentric arrangements and odd rhythms were inspiring. Odd choices like dueling melodic guitar figures suddenly bursting out almost atonally over the title track is cool. Does make me think making weird choices per your instinct is the way to make something good.

Interesting enough

This was sort of dark, gritty post punk. It didn't do much for me, even being post punk.

Goth rock forefathers. I thought it was alright, mainly forgettable with some songs that I don't enjoy. No particular standouts after a few listens.

Dont know what to make of this. Sometimes sounds shite, other great.

It was fine

I dont get all of goth. Aside from some drum and bass grooves there isnt much here for me. I like the Cure and some of Joy Division and some other examples of 1st wave "goth" music. But, its decent. I can see the appeal for some.

Gothy, post-punk. I can see why it's on a list like this, but wow it was not a fun listen.

Oscuro, delineado, engañosamente intenso.

Esse disco sempre fica um pouco perdido pra mim entre In the Flat Fields e The Sky's Gone Out.

This album oscillates between these weird dance style tunes (The Passion of Lovers, Kick In the Eye) and these songs that sound like a parody of a goth band, like Hollow hills and Of Lilies and Remains. IT's very weird in that way, and I've never really heard anything quite like it. It's almost as if they aren't taking this seriously, but maybe that's the point. In any case, I'm not even sure if I liked it or disliked it. There are points where they sound like Talking Heads, and points where they sound like The Cure, and points where they sound like shit. Considering the The Cure and The Smiths were around before this, I'm not sure what the big hype is around Bauhaus. They certainly are 80's Goth Rock, and maybe they are the archetypical example.

Gothic. Unusual. But, I guess that was what the band wanted? I don't think there are any reason stand out tracks. Above average and quirky. Very 1980's

Solid goth-punk, sounds a lot better than most of the pretender shit that came down the pike.

Para la epoca no es de lo peor, pero está lejos de ser memorable.

Interesting one. Very 80s but with its own unique, punk/goth touch. It's certainly a darker record, but reminiscent of Bowie or Joy Division. The rhythms can be fun and upbeat, while the vocals add a nice complement of reverb and chorus. I can also hear how this band influenced other groups that came up after them. This one is good.

Coming back to Mask decades after pretending to like Bauhaus to impress my hardcore punk friends, I wasn’t sure what to expect. This album is more varied than I remembered with equal parts gothic gloom, wiry funk, and theatrical art rock. Sometimes it worked. Sometimes I grimaced. T“Hollow Hills” is where the ride down nostalgia lane stalled for me. It’s the epitome of goth atmosphere: slow, reverbed, and ominous. I know this is the kind of track that goth fans live for, but it completely lost me. Can we talk about the start of the track “Mask," though? The opening split seconds sounded like the long-lost twin of The Police’s “Synchronicity II." Both songs deal with identity, pressure, and psychological unraveling. It made me wonder: is Bauhaus describing what "Daddy" becomes when the beast finally breaks free? Coincidence or cosmic post-punk synchronicity? Either way, I loved spotting that unexpected link. As for track 13; I tried, truly. But I had to tap out. I can’t do nearly seven minutes of legalese absurdism over cowbells and spoken-word chaos. It's one Dada fish cake too far for me.

Delightfully dark.

Quite cool sound - v like the Cure

Another album in the category "kinda cool and memorable, but also kinda shit, so it gets a boring-looking 3-star rating even though it's actually really interesting"

Started off strong with the opening tracks, but didn't really pull me in the same the rest of the way. Nothing bad here, though, and glad I listened.

More like a 3.5. I like the vibes.

Not just any monkey could make this music, unless . . . the monkey was a pretentious Englishman. 3/5

álbum bastante experimental, me gustan que utilizen diferentes ruidos o sonidos variados a lo largo de todo el album, me gustaron algunas canciones, mi favorita fue dancing. 3/5

I can hear these guys' influence in basically all of my favorite bands. Past that, it's a pretty good record that acted more like a history lesson for me. Not hugely likely to come back to it but it was pretty cool.

I like Bauhaus in general, but their magnum opus will always be 'Bela Lugosi's Dead' and every other output is just playing catch up.

jävligt ojämt. vissa låtar var coola men vissa rätt dåliga. go bas

An alright spooky sounding Midwest 80s alternative punk.

i thought that i'd hate it but if you skip some parts it's very interesting and fun

This was enjoyable, new for me. It’s got a lot of playback, I have actually never heard of Bauhaus before, but I’ll definitely go back and listen to their other stuff

Bit of filler on this

Spooky ooky fun that makes me wanna go trick or treating

Dark Wave!

Club music

Early 80’s gloom

Decent but probably wouldn’t listen to again. Couple of good tracks around middle, didn’t like the start all that much. 3 stars

Less gothy and more pop-funky than I expected. PMs Bowie-esque stylings are at the fore. Especially on the Deram/Newley sounding ‘Of Lillies…’

There are three types of song on this album, boring atmospheric failed attempts at being spooky songs(Hair of The Dog, Mask, Hollow Hills), louder almost dance songs (Dancing, In Fear of Dub, Kick in the Eye) and just plain bizarre songs (Of Lilles and Remains, 1. David Jay 2. Peter Murphy 3. Kevin Haskins 4. Daniel Ash). The dub/dance songs are this album at its best, the slow goth songs are its worst and I don’t know what to think of the weird ones.

Чувствуется концепция, но это немного не моё

Rock aus den 80ern. Teilweise recht wilde Meldodien. 3/5

What would you expect from a band named Bauhaus? This is some awesome 80s New Wave, Alt, Post-Punk, etc. 3/5

I genuinely thought I was going to hate this, but it really wasn’t too bad. Enjoyable at some points, even. I feel like the 80s style production actually fits this album, compared to some others on this list.

Dark? Yeah. Powerful? Ehhh, not really. The whole thing sounds like it’s trapped in a tin can trying to be mysterious. It wants to haunt you, but it's mostly just pacing around in combat boots with nowhere to go. Some cool guitar scrapes and a bit of life in the rhythm section but it's no match for The Cure's depth. Feels like one of those albums you pretend to like in college just to impress someone in eyeliner. Spins: 2 Playlist Additions: - The Passion of Lovers - Kick in the Eye

Its okay

I've liked Bauhaus since we lived in Hemenway. I've never done a whole album though, just bits and pieces. I dig the spooky goth sound, but there seems to be a limit. I really liked The Passion of Lovers, and the more melodic songs. I would have liked a few more of those. They start to lose me when its all clanging noises and he's wailing stuff like "Ooooooooh I'm covered in bats. Beware the Bats" or whatever it is. Anyway, Bauhause remains a band to pluck specific songs from. Album cover: (C-) It reminds me of early internet edgelord videos. Happy Tree Friends and the like.

I can see a photo of the band as I open their album on Spotify. They look like a glam-rock version of The Addams Family. This is a good sign. I'm enjoying this album. "Of Lilies and Remains" is the first song to make me look up. I love a spoken word song like this. The tempo is great. I like "Kick in the Eye". The rest of the album was fun, but not remarkable. I didn't take note of many more individual songs. I don't love the vocals, and the instrumental sections were a little too experimental and zany for me most of the time. 6/10

Ok album nothing great

I wanted to like this more but I was definitely not in the right mood for it, although the fish cakes song made me laugh. Their influence on Interpol and Franz Ferdinand is really evident

It’s OK

I listened to this under blue skies and sunshine which is not at all the right type of weather for this.

Weird that they’re supposed to be the quintessential goth band. “Mask” is the only track that screams “goth” to me. Mostly I find it’s Bowie derivative post-punk that’s not as emotionally powerful as Joy Division and has some annoying rockabilly thrown in there.

Love me some goth stuff once in a while, and great to get to know this one in more depth.

Going into this, I had never heard of Mask or even the band Bauhaus—so I was curious to see if this album could turn me into a goth. Right away, the sound reminded me of Joy Division: minimal, moody, and atmospheric. But as the album unfolded, it veered into darker, stranger territory—and I mean that in the best way. The production is raw and unpolished, giving the music an edge that feels authentic and deliberate. It’s goth rock stripped to its essentials, and done incredibly well. I gave the album a few spins to really sit with it. The first listen was compelling enough to hit replay immediately. Overall, I really enjoyed it and I’ll definitely be coming back to it. It’s brooding and unconventional, with flashes of punk energy woven into its gothic-rock core. It just sounds effortlessly cool. Favorite Track: “Kick in the Eye 2” was a standout—sharp, punchy, and full of energy. “Muscle in Plastic” also left an impression. Honestly, most of the tracks hit the mark. Least Favorite Track: The album lost some momentum toward the end. Tracks like “Earwax” and “Harry” didn’t land as strongly and felt a bit less focused. Album Artwork: The cover is excellent—strange, stylized, and perfectly aligned with the music it represents.

It wasn't terrible, but there felt like there was a lot of noise for noise's sake. The vocalist was a bit too whiny, but ... British, right? I can see where this opened up a lot of things for rock in britain, there's a lot of different styles and ideas. I just wish they percolated a bit more rather than being so punk-ish. "Of Lilies and Remains," WTH was that? Top tracks: "Kick In The Eye," "Muscle In Plastic"

Goth rock pioneers, yes. And similar sound to, but not as good as, Joy Division. Is there really that much else to say?

Complete

Bizarre. Not much more to say.

Sounded a little bit like Joy Division just not as good.

Some nice post-punk/gothy stuff. Feels like if soft cell fronted a joy division like band.

Tough listen personally - a lot of moments where I hear interesting sounds (that probably influenced bands in the 90s and 00s), but a lot where I just hear “noise”.

Weird. Best song about fish cakes I ever did hear.

Good sometimes but meandering 2.5/5

Good Short and sweet

It was fine

I’m at a 3. Honestly? Not that much to write home about. Perhaps it’s some distractions from the Switch 2 Direct lingering in my brain, but this album never quite found the hook to pull me in – Tracks 3-6 really worked for me, and the last track hit pretty nicely, but the rest of them (1, 2, 7-9) sort of felt flat. There’s not an expressly bad track here, just a lot of vague mediocrity, or at the very least, some uncompelling listens. This is definitely 1981 post-punk, but beyond that, nothing here really caught my ears as doing anything particularly special. A few Bowie-esque vocal patterns, some funky basslines here and there, but nothing out of the ordinary that makes me want to say “wow, I had to listen to this before I die”. I liked half of the songs, and I was less impressed by the other half. I don’t feel like I gotta expand on that too much, so… yeah, take it or leave it. I’m sure there are better Bauhaus albums, as I’ve heard the name before, but this one just didn’t click for me. It's not bad, but I'm not itching to recommend it or anything. Hence, the 3.

It was terrible. I loved it. I don't know.

(listened while cooking) Fish cakes, FISH CAKES! That made me laugh a lot. This was very interesting, and fun, and dystopian. Is this goth rock? Sometimes made me think of Joy Division and The Cure. Are they british? German Name. Funny name. Build house. Feels very british and industrial. Some songs were very dark and drone like, made me think of swans, bowie, syd barret. Also Nine Inch Nails must have been inspired by this. And then suddenly some songs felt like pop music and progressions. Kind of a relief. A strange combination. Hyper dynamic production. Sometimes there were super loud sounds that completely sprung out and sounded like it was coming from somewhere else. Don't really know what I thought about it. Very out of place, and scary. But definitely made me feel something. I was actually positively surprised by this album. I can't differentiate any of the songs from each other, and it's kinda one big mess in my head. But I was intrigued and it kept me interested through out most of the album. I enjoyed it.

I didn’t immediately love this album. I had to listen to it in full like 2-3 times. I saved a few songs off the album but what I really appreciate is how far ahead of its time this album is. A goth album in ‘81? That’s kinda crazy to think about. My biggest problem with this album is the ambition of it surprisingly. This album is the definition of style over substance. They have a very specific vision of what they want to sound like and they put all their eggs in that basket. They didn’t try and right like a catchy song or a “hit” punk song. Like had they just added alittle variety I think that would make me happier but I’m positive that would have compromised their vision so what do I know. At the end of the day I’d only recommend this album to people who were already fans of goth punk and wanted to see where it all came from.

I think Bauhaus has done better than this. The album seems a bit more nonsensical and lighter than their earlier efforts. The sparse goth-sound is still there, but the vocals are a lot less impactful than before. I also think it somewhat lacks a hit or other memorable bangers in here. No idea why they picked this over the IMO much better In the Flat Field.

Decent stereotypical 80's party movie soundtrack

This was a very... Interesting album, didn't know anything about it or the band, I was interested but not interested, they had a cool sound but just on the more meh side of it!

This album sounds so much like early Public Image Ltd, it’s hard to believe there wasn’t a very direct influence. Musically, Bauhaus rivals that edgy, post-punk, somewhat experimental sound of PIL and others (like, say, Gang of Four). Which is to say, it’s a good sound. But I couldn’t get into any particular song, which I think is more of an issue with the lead vocalist and the general arrogance these songs exude. I didn’t listen to later CD and bonus tracks, just the original track list, and give it 3/5.

These guys feel like the middle child in the family of the Sex Pistols and the Clash. Sure, they are rebellious and angry, but not that angry. They are more technical and to themselves and happy not be front and center among their siblings.

A couple of good songs, but a pretty average album IMO.

very weird yet captivating record. honestly pretty good but need to listen again to say for sure. 7.2/10

Day422 - i feel like you need to be in a certain state of mind to appreciate this and i’m not in it

2.5/5. Meh, I feel like I'v heard 15 other albums on this list that sounds very similar to this... I suppose it's not bad, but it's not for me.

Not bad - music, writing and vocals are all good enough for a dull listen. Maybe a repeat.

Like evil talking heads.

Bauhaus is kind of a mystery to me. I appreciate what they did for music, but I really have to be in the right mood for their music.

Expected to hate this but actually kind of liked it? I can definitely hear the influence it had on other artists. I was kind of surprised to see it came out in 1981 because it sounded like something from later in the decade. Some DEVO and The Cure vibes for sure. It was a little much at points, and the title track grated on me, but the rest was pretty good.

Excellent music, still sounds relevant today. Not really any classic songs though, just excellent front to back

This is pretty gothic but not in the way I have come to like. Pretty meh. Hollow Hills reminds me of Something In the Way which draws some cool inspiration. Muscle in Plastic reminds me of the Talking Heads in a good way. Started off meh but worked its way into a haunting groove. Meh 3.

This one was an interesting listen. I've never heard anything like this before and each song was dynamic and fun to listen to. There are no real standouts and I didn't feel emotionally connected to any of the songs. It's not quite my taste, but I enjoyed the experiment of listening.

This was such a tough album to rate! The tracks I loved, I really loved and the ones I disliked, were awful! I’m glad I listened to it.

There were bits of this I liked, and bits that were a little grating - particularly some of the singing. I think I'd listen to it again though. I was a bit on edge today!

stupid confession: i like this album more when it's trying to be Talking Heads than it is trying to be Joy Division. that's not to say i don't love Bauhaus being goth, but for me, the vocals are mixed way too flat for me to get the same exhiliration i feel listening to "Bela Lugosi's Dead" or "Dark Entries". why this is the only Bauhaus album on the list is beyond me -- it's like saying the only Bob Dylan album you need to listen to is Nashville Skyline. it's not a wrong choice per se, just an odd one.

An interesting listen from a band I hadn’t heard before, but in reading about them are more influential than I realized. I’ll certainly never think about fish cakes the same way again. Some great sounds throughout the album, but I think I’ll stick to the Cure for my goth rock.

I liked their first album much better

Mjoah, so la la. Konnte man sich anhören, aber schwanke zwischen 2-3 Sternen. Manche Songs schon hart nervig, aber wäre wohl fies da jetzt 2 Sterne zu geben nach dem gestrigen Desaster Album. Long story short: 3 Bussis

Not great, but interesting. 5/10

По мнению А: 3/5 По мнению С: 3/5 ИТОГОВАЯ ОЦЕНКА: 3/5 (27.01.2025)

First listen. Heard worse albums.

Mixed reaction to your album. Some tracks made me want to dance - others didn't catch my attention.

1981. Post-punk / gothic rock / experimental. 7/10 The Passion of Lovers / Hollow Hill / Mask

I will say I quite liked Mask (the song). I wasn’t expecting to enjoy the album seeing as I haven’t previously loved their stuff. Definitely a good album though, 3/5. Not a fan of Fish Cakes — 1. David Jay 2. Peter Murphy etc…

I had my own goth phase around 1982 but I was more of a Sisters of Mercy fan than Bauhaus, although I liked their later stuff.

Hahahah godverdomme zeg... FAVO: Of lilies and remains, Mask, 1. David Jay 2. Peter Murphy 3. Kevin Hasking 4. Daniel Ash

Listened to it twice. Didn’t hate it. Didn’t love it. Almost background music to me. 3 stars

Bowie skipped his sertraline

Good, not great. Some songs that stick in my memory but more that don't

I knew of Bauhaus goth but never experienced before this album. Surprisingly enjoyable!

Not my favorite kind of goth. Not unpleasant, but not my cup of tea.

It started wild

I wasnt familiar with Bauhaus going into this album. As someone who generally isnt a fan of post-punk, I actually enjoyed this album overall. It definitely dipped into a cocaphonous/ avant gard sound at some places, but also had some moments that were catchier. Overall- decent album.

This is all over the place. I love some of it, I hate some of it. Kind of disappointing tbh

Not a big fan but it is okay. 3 stars or C-.

Not bad. I could hear how they influenced a lot of other 80s and early 90s bands who did it better.

Album 621 of 1001 Bauhaus - Mask (1981) Rating : 3 / 5 Being a significant album in the post-punk and gothic rock genres, it is likely a favorite of those listeners. It was a fair album. It didn't totally offend the ear but still nothing to write home about.

Мрачно, отзвуки radioheads, есть интересные мотивы. Но я не насладился прослушиванием.

Rock muziek. Gewoon, niet bijzonder.

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. It wasn't as challenging as I was expecting. Not sure I'd listen to it again, but it was okay.

This wasn't as bad as I was expecting but I'm not sure it will be a regular listen. Some good tunes and some very random ones too.

Fish cakes. It was very Gothic. Nice bass rifts. FS: In fear of fear. Kat is not a fan

Tää ei olekaan aivan helppo levy! Synkät peruspiirteet pitää sisällään paljon, ja uskonkin että lisäkuunteluilla tää aukeaa paremmin. Annetaan alkuun kolme bongoa. Oon aina katsonut että kannessa on Komisaario Palmu 3/5

Pätevä, joskin vähän tylsän puoleinen levy. 3/5

Bauhaus like so many bands of the late 70s/80s a killer singles band - here Kick in the eye, passion of lovers - but couldn't nail a full album of consistently good tracks.

Entertaining sound. I'd listen to more of their stuff.

Mask is the second album from Bauhaus, the founding fathers of goth rock. The band made guitar and bass driven alt-rock, with a distant, synthesized sound. Peter Murphy's dramatic vocals add to the generally gloomy sound of Bauhaus' work. "Kick in the Eye" was the most successful single on the album; it's a catchy, near-pop crossover song for the band. The song could be the work of any of a number of 80's bands, demonstrating the influence of this band. Some tracks are not as engaging; the title track, for example, is a bit of a challenge to sit through.

I like this fine, but feel like it's one of those things where I appreciate them as an influence on other, later bands that I probably like more.

There's a murkiness to Mask that helps establish its world while also leaving the listener wanting a more dynamic exploration of its atmospheric potential.

I liked Bauhaus much more than I expected. Though that was starting from pretty low expectations. Pretty much every song had a bit that made me cringe or recoil. But every song also had at least one bit that I really vibed to. Overall too much goth indulgence for me, but there’s some great grooves and cool guitar licks buried in all that eyeliner.

I’m stumped. I was expecting to hate this and I don’t.

Ahead of its time for sure but in the end its a one and done for me.

my fiance is deep in the Bauhaus trenches, so I'm dimly familiar with this band, and with 80s post-punk generally. going into this album I expected something somewhat ominous, and I certainly got that, but I didn't anticipate how groovy and dancy it would be! I was definitely reminded of David Bowie's late 70s material more than a few times here. I don't love the tinny, reverb-drenched 80s production, but I've certainly heard more egregious, mushy mix jobs on other records from this time period. like with the Crickets a couple days ago, I think I appreciate this a bit more for its place in music history than anything else. after all, Bauhaus are one of the most beloved bands in the history of alternative music, let alone just goth rock; but goth rock's just not really a subgenre I'm as drawn to as others under this post-punk umbrella. it's possible I'd enjoy In the Flat Field or one of their other albums more, but this is the only Bauhaus album on the list, so I'll have to do that on my own time. strong 6/10.

interesting stuff

I wish I had more to say about this album. I really dig the bass lines in it. Nothing else to report though unfortunately

I only knew Bela Lugosi's Dead, which isn't on this album. And also Love and Rockets who formed from the pieces of Bauhaus. Innovative and influential, but buried in gloom. And reverb. Lots of reverb. Good album, would have loved it in my earlier days. Except Fishcakes, I just don't know what that is about.

Started off exactly as I expected. Finished off exactly as I didn't expect. On the whole not bad, better than a 2 so 3.

Halloween week. Good timing for some Bauhaus. Tbh I don't know anything besides Bela Legosi's dead and whichever that one is from the meme clip with the bats the right way up. Not sure anything here comes up to the quality of either of those. Kick in the Eye is good. Mask is alright. Kind of average really, a shame.

Evokes images of the Peanuts gang, wearing all black, dancing along to these songs.

The album reminds me a lot of wave and especially of the 'Neue Deutsche Welle' at the beginning of the 80s. I think I've heard something similar from DAF, Extrabreit and early gothic bands. It was interesting to hear something like that again. But that's enough for now. 3/5

Got a little better as it went on. The dub other weird stuff was ok but unlikely to revisit. I'm feeling like 2.45 but will round up.

Started well enough - darkly ethereal but driving tracks, music to headbang to horizontally, basically what I love about old Cure as in "A Forest" and it made me watch that funny video of some bats in their cage but it's flipped upside-down and becomes black weirdos dancing in a club - but then quickly lost me with its post punk noodlings/vocals and that respective 80ies white guys' "funk". [...] Why isn't their first album in here instead? That one seems much more meaningful and focused as a moment in music history and as a goth rock companion/contrast to The Cure's Seventeen Seconds. The CD's bonus tracks seal the deal here: I don't know what "Mask" wants to be, but it's not much of anything.

Love the Bauhaus Movement, some great art and design came out of it, it’s my vibe. Bauhaus the band though? I didn’t hate it, it felt like they were doing something interesting but I didn’t love it.

Its not so bad

First time I hear about these guys, and this is supposedly goth music? I always thought goth music is supposed to be some depressing stuff but this is actually pretty fun

FISH CAKES (2.5/5)

It was ok, and became less ok as it went on l. Not quite as bad as we expected though.

Started off a little slow but got somewhat better toward the middle of the album. I hear a bit of Brian Eno-type soundscapes that were engaging in moments but I never felt fully wrapped up in the musical tapestry. I think the lead singer’s voice and amorphous genre mixing and “just okay” songwriting left me a little cold.

Enjoy this. Quite Nirvana like 7/10

listened to this while watching the original dracula. good vibes

Fun stuff. I can’t really tell if it would go up or down in my estimation with more listens. That makes it a solid 3 for now.

Like so many of the artists on this list... it's fine. As I reach the end I think my patience for these types of band is just wearing thin with like "yeah it's fine... I feel like I've heard this 200+ times already". The thing is that it is short so I can't really complain a ton which is great.

Considering my favorite time and place for music is 1977 to 83 in England, its a bit weird that I've never owned or heard a Bauhaus album. Not surpisingly I liked alot of things about this album; the ringing guitars, the huge drum sound the prominent bass and he monotone vocals all sound familiar and comfortable to me. I lke both the atmopheric songs like Of Lillies and Remains with its simle walking bass and stabbing guitars it sounds like it could have come directly of of PiLs Metal Box and the foreboding creep of Hollow Hills as well as the hard driving songs like Kick in the Eye with its funky bass line and hard driving In Fear of Fear. But for me they really hit their stride on mid tempo songs like The Passion of Lovers and Mask. A nice discovery who's place in my library is long overdue3.5 stars

Fav: Kick In The Eye Least Fav: Of Lillies And Remains I was expecting to hate this based on the first track but I was pleasantly surprised. Not all of the ideas it’s going for manage to stick but it’s an admirable effort with some great songs.

2.5 stars. Experimental goth rock. Some nice melodies at times and the sax and keys are a nice touch but overall a bit too out there for me, especially with vocals that I'm not into. Cool bassline in "Passion of Lovers".

Don't mind a bit of post-punk. Heard of Bauhaus but first listen

I'm pretty sure I'd heard of the band before, but I doubt I ever heard anything by them (at least knowingly) prior to listening to this album. The album is OK, I suppose, but a bit hard to listen to it with an ear to what this might have been like in 1981 (instead of 2024), so I don't really know how ground-breaking or earth-shattering this might have been for fans and neophytes alike. I kind of enjoyed the spoken-word "Of lilies and remains", and "Dancing" was a bit more hard-edged than many of the others, but overall not much really spoke to me (although I didn't mind listening to it, and found the student-film-esque video for "Mask" more interesting than the song itself). Sadly, the Wikipedia entry was brief and completely unhelpful, and the book entry not much better. It's like everything conspired to keep Bauhaus from being intriguing or compelling....

It was okay. The only track I really liked turned out to be one of the bonus tracks: "1. David Jay 2. Peter Murphy 3. Kevin Haskins 4. Daniel Ash" This is like the Hot Topics of albums

Exactly what I expected from a Bauhaus album. 3.5 but as it is out of 5…

A cold, musical meander where the noise of the guitars echoes into an infinity of I guess it made sense at the time?

I liked it but I'm not sure why...

It's okay if you want to make fish cakes.

Dobry album, czuć innowatorstwo i coś innego, chociaż nie do końca moje klimaty do słuchania na codzień. Czasami wrócę do pojedynczych utworów ale ostatecznie nie zagości na stałe w bibliotece. Ostateczna ocena 3,5. Faworyt: "Harry"

I've got a real soft spot for post punk, even the ones that border on early goth. I only knew Bauhaus from their earlier singles, 'Bela Lugosi's Dead' and 'Dark Entries'. Truthfully, they're not quite as good as some who came before or after, such as Joy Division or the Banshees. But they do occasionally hit just right. 'Mask' is considered more accessible than their debut album and sure enough some tracks are very catchy and danceable. 'Kick in the Eye' is a highlight. The album drags in some spots. In others, Bauhaus maintain their experimentalism, which is good or bad depending on who you ask. If you're not a post punk fan, Bauhaus are unlikely to convince you otherwise. For the rest of us though, it's still a good album.

I can easily see not sticking this one through. It definitely has the feel of that one guy in college whose name was Steven but wore black turtlenecks and introduced himself as Dieter before his one man backed by boom box set at the open mic. The album seems to open in a way as to make itself hard to listen to, with an intentional discordancy and trying to mask the broad technical competence of the musicians. Although, I'm not sure anyone in the band can actually sing. Still, there is definitely something *there* right from the beginning. You can see why they were influential, even if you don't understand why they'd be popular enough to actually sell records. By the time I got to the second to last track, I went "Of course they are going to have a song that's really just 4 nearly unconnected snippets that's just named for each of the 4 members of the band. And then they are going to end with an instrumental with 5 seconds of dead air in the middle. It makes perfect sense." I can't really even rate this properly. I think if I was in the right head space I'd probably listen to it on loop for days. Other times I'd turn it off instantly right after I threw up in my mouth a little. I guess that makes it a 3, but it's a very confused 3. Probably what they were going for, a strongly held ambivalence.

Dark and unique. Not my favorite, but good.

It's got a vibe to it. I don't know if it's a good vibe, but it's definitely a vibe.

Average

Not bad but not good either

Early goth rock that would benefit from better production. Not bad.

I've heard of, but never heard, Bauhaus. I like some of the experimental aspects and it's fairly palatable with a few songs having radio potential. It's not something I'd seek out though. Good for today's spin. 3.4

I don't really know what to say about it. It's later than you think it would be, given the style. The strange bedfellows of austerity and avant garde is interesting, and I always enjoy experimental new directions - but on the whole I didn't exactly enjoy it.

I grew up with this album, but as time has gone on, I prefer their first album more. Side one of this is a bit ploddy, which I guess makes sense, being as Bauhaus pretty much invented the 80s Goth thing. Side 2 has a lot more of a spark about it, Kick In The Eye still sounding lithe and fresh. As does X-Ray Eyes. One of the band's great strengths was mixing funk and dub into their post-punk, and they are the best bits here. The ending of this album is still wistful and beautiful, too. They did - at times - have a way with a poignant tune. Not one I would play often these days, but still a great album.

An unlikely hybrid of goth meets funk. That's going to be quite a look. The bass is bloody brilliant throughout. I'd forgooten how good Bauhaus were.

The ´80s - some songs are working even in 2024, others not

This isn't too bad you know. I like the driving rhythms, and a lot of it is quite upbeat.

Typically weird

I’m not sure I’m in the mindset for this. Could be fun on drugs

Kick in the head is great. The others, a little grating and same-y.

Singing from the shadows in the corner of a dank tomb created great vocal effects. The most mellow trip hop electronica heard to date and I liked the sound. (2.8*s)

Kinda cool ambient rock album with a mix of dark and light tones. Sometimes keeping it relatively simple can still be effective. Couple quick decent songs that I might come back to. Earlier it felt relatively run of the mill but by the end of it I realized how much I enjoyed the listen. Nothing special but I'll take more stuff like this whenever it comes up on the 1001. Never heard of Bauhaus before, guess I'm glad to get exposed to this. One of the few times I actually listened to the bonus/added tracks after the album finished. 3.45 stars

The album was good for working while listening. it was noisy and eerie at points but in a good way. 3.5

Some of the songs sound like they were meant to be regular pop songs but were made weirder to fit the album. Aside from that it's a nice album, especially the last 2 songs

Strange. Only word I have for it. ... kinda like it too

- odd vibes but I didn't hate it? - I appreciated the musicianship of it but i wouldn't really go back and listen to it I don't think - Mark Hoppus mentions Bauhaus in a blink song so they're valid

little too different

At first, I was very irritated and rather turned off, but if you approach it with an open mind, you can't help but like this charming early goth vibe. Somehow under the black mascara and white make-up there's still funk and something like goth-ska to be found.

Seemed to be a mix of 80s synthy indie, angular art rock and a bit of ska for good measure. This isn't at all what I expected from gothic rock. It wasn't bad, there were a few tracks I really liked, particularly the one which had a weird screechy repetitive guitar line, sounded like black eyes. Overall I wouldn't say it particularly stood out, very much a 3.

Alright in the background, but I was a bit disappointed - I expected something luminous from gothic rock. So overall, the album didn't resonate with me at all. The song about fishcakes bumped it up.

Ret fedt! Mørk post-punk, rimelig meget up my alley

Sounded good. Kick in The Eye was my favourite track. Lots better than most of the Goth music that followed it.

Thoughts before listening: 80s goth rock. Bauhaus has always been adjacent to the music I am interested in (punk, indie, alt, etc). but I have never actually listened to them. I think I was turned off by the idea of droney, dark goth music even though I don't actually know thats what they sound like. I felt the same way about the Cure for years, but finally came around, so perhaps the same will happen here. Review: This is a bit of a mixed bag to me. On some songs its everything I feared a Bauhaus record would be: dark, cheesy, synth-led 80s new wave. However, other songs show a real knack for catchy pop rock melodies. There is definitely bad production here similar to other 80s punk scene bands like the Misfits and Joy Division, both of whom are similar to (and in my opinion better than) Bauhaus. In general I prefer the upbeat songs ("The Passion of Lovers", "Dancing", "Kick in the Eye", and "In Fear of Fear") so those will be added to the playlist. This is a 3-star album

i don't think i really "got" it 🥲

interesting album and sound overall, but the individual tracks all felt similar to me. just dark and brooding and proto-new-wavey, but at least that's fairly unique within the 1001 list. this album didn't even have bela lugosi's dead on it! favorites: the passion of lovers, kick in the eye, the man with x-ray eyes, mask, in fear of dub

goth, shows promise, not as good as their next album

intrresting

Reasonably accessible gothic with some catchy phrases, so I could appreciate it.

I can see why this is influential for a certain kind of sound.

I want to be goth now

This used to be my favorite Bauhaus. Maybe it still is, but it seems kinda whatever right now.

First time listening - dig it. 3.5 stars

Very gothic. Very 80s. I wouldn't describe it as 'good' persay, but I enjoyed the ride.

So goth it paints its room black and smokes clove cigarettes. I dont love it, though - Its not a great album. Three stars for being what it is unironically. 3/5

Interesting sounds, but nothing that made me want to listen

Pretty good stuff. Sure I’ll like it more upon more listens so for now its a three

almost exactly what i expected, apart from the fishcake recipe. not sure i necessarily loved it but it was really interesting.

A little trove of new wave rock quirks and gothic eeriness.

Please chill guys

Je sais pas ??? C'est spécial ??? Bien ??? Étrange ???

Bit of a mix this. Certain themes I liked a lot more but some of it was just a bit much. Not sure what I thought about the song about fish cakes..

Bit weird, I didn't mind it but can't imagine I'll go listen to it again any time soon. What's with the fish cakes song?

Great sound. Super innovative at the time.

Sonically robust. Kinda Devo plus Depeche Mode

Sometimes I feel like this list is generated by a bunch of Las Vegas bookies. The goal of the casino is to make the odds even and favorable as possible so that money comes in heavy on both sides. They shoot right down the middle. I give out a whole Lotta threes. This album is well deserving of the right down the middle, three. I like some of it, I didn’t care for some of it. I’m not familiar with these guys, so I can’t speak to why this album is so influential or important or earth shattering. I have played music and I have written music. We have had people who have enjoyed our music. When all the sudden done, I don’t feel like my work is too far off in notoriety or importance from these guys.

Not bad. Pretty good actually. I struggled with Peter Murphy's voice but Daniel Ash's guitar and David J's bass work made up for it. There is some filler but I wouldn't be surprised if I revisited this one in the future.

Feels like if the Smiths went weird/goth. Generally enjoyable album. Best Songs: Of Lilies and Remains, Kick in the Eye, Worst Songs: Hollow Hills, Mask, 1. David Jay...

Ok, I could get more into it with more listens maybe.

I'm not a fan of this genre.

OK but a bit boring

This album had moments of fun “FISH CAKES!”. I loved the rhythm section. This band seemed like contemporaries with the talking heads. I haven’t explored this genre much and enjoyed this trip.

5/10 It was fine. Gothy alternative rock. Didn’t hugely stand out from other stuff out around this time Could clearly hear influences like Clash, Bowie etc Vocals not amazing Production a little sludgy - some songs the instruments somewhat merged into one Preferred the songs where they had more funk/propulsion in the rhythm. Second half better. Best: In Fear of Fear

Couple of classic Goth tracks but the rest were a bit ruin of the mill.

this was hmmm interesting. i will never listen to it again, but it doesn’t mean i hated it. i just won’t look for it again, but it was cool and weird and exactly why i love this project.

Not really my thing. But not terrible. Just probably won't be listening again.

weird, and sometimes in a good way. but sometimes the crappiness shines through. overall average

Huh. Well, I went from, "this is cool," to..."WTF? I hate this crap", to "oh wow I really like this!" I think the album is too long, and I can't decide if the stuff I like is their normal sound, or experimental tracks. Fishcakes. Wow. Sartori reminds a lot of some Belew. Probably the era.

It was good but all the songs blended together not in the best way.

Easy to listen to, hollow hills is a good song

Bauhaus sounds like a Bret Easton Ellis novel, and that is a good thing.

decent songwriting, some of the lyrics are really poetic, even though they are then performed in the least musical way possible. an interesting album nonetheless

So you're telling me that goth is basically gloomy punk???

It's possible that the only song I've heard from Bauhaus is "Bela Lugosi Is Dead", which wasn't on the album Mask. I was familiar enough with the band to know that Bauhaus is part of the Goth movement. The music on Mask seemed like a darker shade of the music from Echo and the Bunnymen. "Dancing" and "Kick in the Eye" were the individual tracks that I rated the highest, but on my first listen I had a hard time distinguishing individual tracks. I did not mark any of the tracks as something I did not like, and I'm willing to listen to more from the band. I don't know if I would come back for a complete re-listen to Mask.

Hair of the dog - Försöker de skrämma livet ur mig? Melodierna är bra än så länge. Sångaren mumlar; lite svårt att höra vad han sjunger. *Väldigt* varierande volym... och konstiga ljud igen Adekvat.

Mye rart noe bra og noe ass

May need another listen but some great moments!

Reconozco la brillantez, pero no termino de entusiasmarme. 3/5

listened 2x, nice to hear the roots of goth rock, but not something i would go back to. 3.1/5

Not so bad.

Minus 1 for recording quality.

Ik ken weinig van het genre, maar ik heb al beter gehoord

An album that lies completely in my musical tastes. Great basslines, dark atmosphere, uptempo enough to make it danceable, lyrics to make you think, interesting rhythms. Everything is here for me. And still, it does me very little and I can't put my finger on it.

This hurts my neuropath ways but they have some nice drums

Perhaps it's just the sheer abundance of Punk and Post-Punk on this list, but I really didn't hate this one. The drumming across this album was performed and mixed really really well for this style, which makes it sound a bit more 90s and added some enjoyment for me. I did, however, hate every instance of a jumpscare on the tracks. -1 bro.

Unhinged Joy Division

I do like the vibe of some of this. Hair of the Dog instrumentals are cool. The Passion of Lovers almost has a slight Smith's feeling. Kick In The Eye a little Bowie. I think I like what they're doing here more than I enjoy the total product.

This does sound ahead of it's time. On first listen I dismissed most of it. On my second listen I'll say the instrumentals impressed me more. I'm getting burned out on this cadence the British vocalists of the 80s use. I don't know it's origins. I can speculate, that they are all taking inspiration from Bowie, but I have no idea. Like on the track Lillies Remains. Holllow Hills reminds me of Nirvana's Come As You Are and it doesn't have that Blinded By Science vocal style, so that's cool.

Enjoyed

From bouncy Bowie glam to eerie atmospheric dark wave we can admit this album to be a grower. In that special time Bauhaus seem even bigger than seen from now.

Kinda dig it. Kinda Fred Schneidery.

Good tone. Overly long with some really weird ideas thrown into the album

Very interesting album not my style but worth listening to

It was alright. Didn't blow me away.

very surprisingly enjoyable

Ikkje lika bra som førstealbumet diverre, men fortsatt kos

Está bien

OoOOOOoooOOO SPooooookKKKKYYYY

Mask is an album that sounds like exactly what an 80s gothic post-punk experimental sound would be. They feel expansive with the added flavour of keyboards and acoustic guitars on top of the standard guitar and drum work. Best: The Passion of Lovers Worst: Satori

Fun mix of surfy beats and punk rock. Album felt a little long for this genre but it was nice for the drive

I don’t think I’ve ever heard Bauhaus before this. I had heard of them though and I definitely had a much different idea of what they’d sound like. While this won’t make it into a long list of albums I’ll come back to time and time again, I am enjoying it. The best way I can describe it is some combination of Joy Division, Bowie’s Berlin trilogy, Pixies, and My Bloody Valentine. I’m not sure if that actually makes sense though.

Lost boys soundtrack

It takes a lot of effort to mix an album this badly. Normally my PC volume stays around 30 and 40, I needed to pump up a solid 60 to listen decently to it. Anyway, it's the right amount of fun and gloomy at the same time. Their first album fits more my music taste, it indulges a bit more on the gloomy side without resulting too goofy. (I don't like numeric ratings, I just give 3 to ALMOST anyone)

Each song felt both hit and miss for me overall. It was interesting to have songs feel both enjoyable and boring in the same three minute span. Overall I'd say decent though

Dark post punk energy in a similar vein to Joy Division

Little more poppy than the first album, which at times sounds like a bad David Bowie rip off, ie Kick in the Eye. However there's a enough variation in this album to keep in interesting. It's good just not great.

While dated sounding, I enjoyed the electronic/post punk/dance sound of this record. And I always like Peter Murphy’s vocals.

Dated and samey, with little light and shade. Influenced a bunch of bands I like, but just too far back and not engaging enough for me to like this. Interesting and deserving of its place on the list though.

It had it's moments and there are some interesting tracks, it's not something I would listen to often, but it did grow on me by the second listen. I understand their appeal, influence and they definitely have a distinct sound, at times dark, other times poppy and dance worthy. Solid, but not really my taste.

I’ve actually enjoyed way more than i’ve enjoyed Bauhaus before.

3/5. A gothic and poppy album that provides a good mix between punk and accessible. There is definitely some days I would not enjoy this but today is one of those days I do enjoy it. The inclusion of funk and happier sounds mixed with dark ambience is always a good choice though.

I’ve not had an industrial post punk album from 1981 for a few weeks actually! Didn’t mind this: moody, gothic, experimental but the fact remains. I don’t like post punk.

Another OK album. 3*

Bauhaus is the band who started the genre of goth rock. Their music is weird, but in a good way. Super experimental. Goth rock isn't really my scene, but sometimes it is interesting to hear the starting point of a whole genre. Bauhaus' music is full of reverb, and haunting synth work, as well as deep, dark vocal delivery. Most of the time, the songs make no sense. An example of this would be the song "1. David Jay 2. Peter Murphy 3. Kevin Haskins 4. Daniel Ash". Almost 2 minutes into the song, the band starts singing about how to make fish cakes, and randomly shouts "FISH CAKES!!!" Near the end of this same song, they play the vocal track backwards, resulting in some weird noise. Props to the band for this album cover. It reminds me of the start of a bad joke: " A goth, an alien, and a panda walk into a bar..." Overall, not my favourite genre, but absolutely important to the creation of goth rock, emo, shoegaze, and more... It must be said that shoegaze, as a genre, can go fuck itself. Favourite songs: The Man With X-Ray Eyes, Harry, Hair of the Dog, The Passion of Lovers, Dancing, In Fear of Dub, Mask Least favourite songs: Hollow Hills, Ear Wax, "1. David Jay 2. Peter Murphy 3. Kevin Haskins 4. Daniel Ash" 3/5

Don't really know much of Bauhaus's stuff aside from Bela Lugosi's Dead. Interesting that this is the one chosen to be on the list. Hollow Hills -- I'm liking this! Kick in the Eye 2 is a nice catchy new wave jam. Harry is kind of a goth ska vibe... Overall it's cool, but not hitting me especially. 3/5

could tell this was going to be interesting when the first track, Hair of the Dog, opens up sounding like electric static. However, I enjoy the drum beat that drives the track. The Passion of Lovers has a good melody too. I didn’t enjoy the vocals much, though. Actually, I didn’t much enjoy any of the vocals on this album. Hollow Hills is very dramatic. It sounds, um, hollow, so I guess that was the goal. However, Kick in the Eye takes me back where I need to be. Something upbeat to dance to. A lot of this album is chaotic to me. The yelling and whining vocals are distracting. Not my scene but decent music.

An eclectic mix of not unpleasant sounds. Reminiscent of Joy Division and the Cure yet remaining unique.

Not as dark and gothy as I'd expected. Definitely didn't expect any disco beats. I feel like I should listen to it again sometime, but for now it's a solid 3.

Had some good moments

Gros album punk, pas tant dans le mood pour l’écouter, pas mal de criage mais de la bonne instrumentation. Hmmmm… un 3 pour l’instant

Not my favorite from Bauhaus

You know I have no real feeling either way. Just listened

much more experimental and varied than I expected. not my favorite but I see the value in it

Fish cakes! Fish cakes! Fish cakes! 7/10
