Definitely one to give some more listens. My kind of music, that gothic post-punk is something i love, and was familiar with their debut album already, which is great. I think it could do with a little trimming down, maybe the version i heard had some bonus songs added onto the end, because the quality definitely dipped in the final few songs. Glad i listened to it though, will have to check out the rest of their discography some time.

In what way is this supposed to be special and even [gulp] good?

Back when I'd heard about goth music, but not actually listened to it, I always pictured it as being really mopey and morose. While it is definitely morose, goth music is so much more danceable than I would ever have imagined. This is an excellent example of that. It's a really fun listen, with catchy melodies combined with more experimental/spacey sounds. 4/5 Really cool early goth album. It shows a lot of the potential that the genre has. I understand a lot better why goth kids liked this music so much. I just don't understand why they were so sad

Started out very promising, but in the end it felt like just another post punk album, that I was trying to power through. Nothing special.

Interesting album, wouldn't bring me back to listening to it again, fun if you like that gothy vibe.

I can't really get behind the vocals; it's chaotic and rough. Some instrumentals are similar, some use more common patterns. It's an interesting piece of art. But I'd never want to listen to it on my own or in a group even

The pop bones and metal bones superimposed are interesting enough. For goth rock, almost every tune is piercingly accessible, but chord progressions and some percussion have a directional relationship with extreme music I think comes later. Sealing the deal is the call to leave the presentation entirely unpolished. Plenty of discord makes the shtick self-aware in a correct way, neither artifice nor irony.

Règle générale par contre c'est un très bon album qui a bien vieilli et je suis surpris de ne pas en avoir entendu parlé plus tôt. 8/10

bit disappointed with this to be honest. I only know Bauhaus from Bela Lugosi's Dead and I think they covered Ziggy Stardust, but haven't heard much on Mask that is that memorable. Can hear traces of Gang of Four and some gothic guitar in places, but overall I found this quite dull

Every lead singer sounds like an asshole, let’s just call it artsy, they’ll listen. If this is a top 1,001 album I need to hear before if die, just let me fucking die. Every time one of these lead singers opens their mouth I see red. The only decent song on the album was Satori. Because there were no vocals and the album was finally fucking over. What kind of dickhead listens to this because they want to!? Thank Christ for the 2 dozen talking heads songs we like because the rest of you sound like liquid shit. Fuck DEVO and fuck all the rest of you. Bunch of wet trash bags. Cat: it’s ok. Has more of a rock feel than some of the other 80s stuff we’ve listened to. Weird lyrics - just stop. I feel a little dead inside having listened to this.

I can hear the influence, and understand why those who like it would love it, and there are a couple of good tracks, but as an album, I won't be rushing to listen again any time soon.

Very influential, but I've tried and just can't get into it.

The respect for this album being from 1981 and considered gothic rock is a bit tame forty years later. The campiness of the 80s, and the weird disco inspirations of the 70s make for an interesting set of grooviness that makes the sound of this album not as dark as gothic has become understood to be in the 21st century. That being said, if for purely historical reference this album is an education in observation of how far music has come.

Interesting, probably worth another listen

One of my favorite things about this 1001 albums project is learning how to accurately predict the global score from other people. The fact that this album is almost a full point lower than The Eagles perfectly sums up the clientele of this project. 3.5/5

Småstrevligt album.

Am I crazy to suggest that I hear some Dead Kennedy's influence in this? Vocally on some tracks, and a little East Bay Ray spice, elsewhere. Black & white cover with yellow font...

True story: in high school gym class they made everyone pair off and choreograph an aerobics routine and then lead the class for a day. My partner (and fellow weirdo) and I picked Kick in the Eye as our song and put in several hours of sincere effort coming up with moves. Surprisingly our dance was a big hit. To this day I am proud of making a bunch of nice normal teenage girls into Bauhaus fans.

All I’ve previously heard from Bauhaus was their breakout single Bela Lugosi’s Dead and their acclaimed debut album which I found a bit one-note and dreary after a while. Imagine my surprise then when the follow-up release just keeps evolving in so many unexpected ways. I keep making a note of songs that are highlights and have practically listed the whole tracklist for a whole host of different reasons. Very inventive, quirky, goth vibes Update: I wrote the above while listening to Hollow Hills, and found the second half pretty underwhelming in comparison. Muscle in Plastic and the title track were both good, but the other songs didn’t live up to the potential that was clearly on show elsewhere

Contrary to belief, goths are some of the funkiest people out there

One almost has to be a child of the '80s for this to have much resonance, by which one means an actual child in the '80s (like via time travel). Otherwise, this just sounds like a relic rooted in time, antique music, if occasionally engaging in shadowy sort of way.

Eh. That song about fish cakes, though.

Hmmmm. The cure did it better. Cool for early 80s. Declined towards the end, why does one of the last tracks sound like a mighty boosh number?

eclectic early ‘80s resembling elements of PiL/Joy Division/Cure/Talking Heads. At times really enjoyable funky dance bass locked in with tight drums. Generally too diverse covering lots of styles. Not bad, just too varied. A very low 3 stars

Like a less catchy The Cure

Edgy and nonsensical lyrically, boring and dull musically. The riff on "Mask" is kinda cool tho ngl.

It's of a different style than I typically hear, and I like it. A bit of a mash-up of electronic, rock, pop, etc. Very cool cover, too.

I happened to see Bauhaus live three times by accident. In all three cases, I thought that I liked Peter Murphy, but that the songs, even the good ones, were way too long. That is my review of this album. Too long song's for what is in them. The audio quality is great though and it's aged as well as it can. But I was bored. And Bella Lugosi's Dead isn't on this one. So there wasn't much for me to sink my teeth into.

A combination of Joy Division, Bowie, and Nick Cave. This was wild. A decent amount to like and dislike so I’ll call it a push. Title track was probably my favorite.

Thought would be more avant garde but wasn't. Still unremarkable.

I've always like the vibe and image of Bauhaus but apart from their Bela Lugosi hit (which I bought on 12") could never get into them. Listening back now their sound is a lot more experimental (not mainstream at all) and authentic. 'Earwax' is a treat. It's pretty spare and basic (in a good way) so I'm happy to have reacquainted with them.

4.0 - Took me a bit to adjust to the muffled drum tracks but I ended up liking this album more than expected. I like the distant guitars that add an element of unrest in the background, as well as the riff on “Of Lilies and Remains.” The vocals, though thin, work well with tortured lyrics, enhancing an overall austere and gothic sound. I imagine I’ll like this even more after a few more listens. Standouts: “Dancing”, “In Fear of Fear”, “Mask.”

Some interesting grooves but I mostly didn’t enjoy this. I think I’d need more context to know what this album is about to fully appreciate it

The second release from one of the pioneers of goth rock is more varied than most of the other pioneers of the goth movement. You can hear much more of the post-punk influences, along with a little dub throughout. I was a fan of Peter Murphy's singing at this point (both for the band and for me personally) - I think later material can be a bit monotonous. The rest of the band is more varied as well. The acoustic elements and keyboard flourishes are welcome, as is the sax on occasion. I don't know if this one makes my list, but a pretty impressive effort all around.

In my quest to find something redeemable, I started listening to the drummer, who was doing some interesting things, as if he were a part of a different band in a different dimension. Groovy feeling "goth rock". Nothing too notable

It's...something. I don't know how or why it's in the top 1000 list, it's weird, not terrible, not good, not memorable. Not groundbreaking. Kind of a waste of an hour.

This is pretty beige. Weird staticky start into some drums which sounds interesting, but it really fades into background music pretty quickly. Vocalist is crap, production mix is a bit weird so you can't really hear them anyway. The overall sound is actually quite good (if not that exciting) but the vocals really break it and don't seem to fit well with the rest. 2/5.

Well this was certainly a trip.....I had to keep checking if this was the album we were suppose to listen to and didn't switch over to some acid trip collaboration created by Spotify. Didn't really enjoy but damn there was some serious weird stuff. At least it wasn't the Dead or Dylan and for that, I'll give the extra .5 1.5 but scored a 1

3 Bauhaus has been on my perpetual listen list for years. I think I first heard of them from the blink-182 song, so I figured it would be punky or at least influential to punk. I think there’s about half to 3/4 of a good album here, with the best parts sounding like Joy Division if they got the chance to continue with Ian Curtis, and without the impending doom of what we all know is to come. There’s some really interesting instrumentation going on with some equally interesting and dark lyrics, shown best during Hollow Hills, which paints an insanely grim and haunted picture. Kick In The Eye feels like the shot in the veins the album needed, but the energy felt short-lived. Everything past Man with the X-Ray Eyes I could take or leave. I can sort of see why people like this band so much but I doubt it’s their best work. The experimental song is neat, but I think I was just exhausted by the album’s length/complexity by the time the end came around. Where Joy Division feels like a funeral march, this feels like a party at the graveyard. Favorites: Hair of the Dog, The Passion of Lovers, Of Lillies and Rainbows, Hollow Hills

3.5 Fish cakes? Fish cakes. When I think of Bauhaus, I begrudgingly think of that Matt-era blink-182 song She’s Out of Her Mind, which has the lyrics “She got a black shirt, black skirt and Bauhaus stuck in her head”. Outside of that, all I knew was that Bauhaus is 80s goth music. And I kind of dug it! In some ways it felt like new wave bands of the era without many of the pop elements, with also maybe a bit of German industrial mixed in? There are also some absolute killer bass hooks that I couldn’t help but bob along to while working. Even the more droning ambient tracks kinda worked for me in the way they helped flesh out the album’s doomy atmosphere. I could see myself listening again… maybe after a shopping trip to buy some black nail polish and eyeliner. Favorite songs: Hair of the Dog, The Passion of Lovers, Dancing Also the lead singer vocally is basically Fred Schneider from the B-52s but goth - change my mind.

This falls into that category of music I don't mind but also don't love. It's decent, nothing bad about it, but it also doesn't grab me for the most part. 3 stars.

This one took me a few days to digest, I wasn't really sure if I liked it or not at first. I've heard of Bauhaus before but I don't think I've listened to them actively. I knew this was going to be gothic rock so I expected something like The Cure, but I was surprised by just how dark and rough this is. Some of the songs were familiar to me, but the two singles(?), "The Passion of Lovers" and "Kick in the Eye" didn't appeal to me as much as the fantastic "Hollow Hills", "The Man With X-Ray Eyes", and "Mask". I think I'll be revisiting it a lot, and I'm delighted to have found it. It's a 4 for me right now because I find it a bit uneven, but I could see the punkier songs growing on me, which could eventually raise it to a 5. Side note: I'm getting sick of the sneaky "Bonus tracks" and "Deluxe Editions" on Spotify. They should be either clearly labelled as bonus or you should be able to filter for the original version. With this album, the title track has a very definite end to it which is kind of spoiled by the 5 off cuts that follow it. Plus it makes the album like 50% longer...I have over 1000 albums to get through here!

This is Tuesday 11 pm WPRB music. It definitely has a crowd, I’m just not in it. In a purely neutral way, it has a timeless quality, it’s hard to assess when it came out without checking. This band feels very influential, “Hollow Hills” feels like the intro to a nirvana song, so clearly the band is pulling on the right strings. Kick In the Eye is a really tight song, and a much better use of that plunky 80s bass sound than yesterday’s album

I kind of couldn't wait for this to be over. Just low tier new wavy and sounds like alot of other new wave of the era, just not as good at all. 4/10.

Enjoyed this one but I guess expected a bit more. Feels like they had plenty of great ideas but didn’t really finish working on them or as if these are merely leftovers from other projects. Still, The Passion of Lovers is a great track. And I guess I expected more of the same, but didn’t really get it in the end. Overall I really enjoyed the cold winter vibes and I got to listen to it on the first day of snowfall which was just perfect coincidence and helped me immerse more into the atmosphere of the album. One thought I had while listening: it could use much more synths In the back. The additional material on the Spotify version is simply bad and completely superfluous. 3.5/5

Great texture, and a couple of decent songs. Bauhaus as a school of thought is all about how form follows function. This is more style over substance. Great style.

It doesn't have Bela Lugosi's Dead on it, but I still enjoy it. Have never listened to the album in its entirety and it doesn't quite all gel for me but still liked most of it. I know it's gothish, but also strikes me like David Bowie made an album with The Doors after they finished Soft Parade.

Good goth fun.

Best Song: The Passion of Lovers. The least Buffalo Bill of all the tracks. Worst Song: Muscle in Plastic. I guess that was intended to be a jazzy interlude, but it just felt like noise. Overall: An hour of overly serious 80s nonsense. None of it is very good.

Driving guitar, intense music from the experimental legends of alternative rock.

This CD starts very poorly. The first couple tracks are no good, and kind of slow. This band is noisy- like what the hell is that sound like an EKG they have going 24-7 on “Of Lillies and Remains”? Just about every song has some kind of unpleasant, vaguely identifiable noise in the background, which is more distracting than anything. That’s exacerbated by their singer, who’s very limited, with an abrasive, shouty voice. About midway through they start to find their footing- “Kick in the Eye” is the first solid track, a fun, fast, white-boy-funky danceable tube, only mildly marred by dissonant sound effects. That must’ve been the start of side 2 on the original record, but they should’ve put it first (probably should’ve had side 2 first, it’s better). Even that runs out of steam too though- “Muscle in Plastic” is incredibly unpleasant noise. I’m right on the fence for giving this a 1- but it does have the core of some decent indie garage rock, if they’d just cut all the noise rock impulses.

I liked the vibe, just wasn't too impressed by it.

While I enjoyed some of the individual tracks here, I never felt as though they gelled into a coherent LP. The mixture of grungy guitar and synths + abstruse songwriting is usually a winner, but a few annoying vocal choices and lack of cohesion derails this one for me.

Had to board a bus at 5:30am, put this song on and was surprised how well this album complemented the pre-dawn atmosphere. So far the two moods are “spooky ghost” and “spooky ghost d a n c e”, and I’m satisfied. HL: “Hollow Hills”, “Mask”, “Kick in the Eye”

El album arranca lugubre con "hair of the dog" y sus sonidos catastroficos impertinentes. Esta cancion cuenta la historia de un hombre el cual pelea por cosas y sigue intentandolo como un "perro", una ludica cancion como muchas de este album que hasta llegan a tocar el "dance punk" muchas veces, un gran ejemplo es "kick in the eye". este es un album muy completo y gran representante de sus generos abarcativos, como al mismo tiempo un gran introducidor de ellos teniendo cambios de estilo constante que no te hacen soltar. Quirky as hell. At times it's spooky vampire music, with a couple departures for island vibes. It's weird but I kinda like it. I don't know a thing about this band but if they've got anymore Dracula in Jamaica albums, I'd be down to try 'em out. Favorite tracks: Mask, Ear Wax, The Passion of Lovers. Album art: Really like the art style, as much as I normally think black and white is bland. Guy on the left looks like Walter White as the Joker. He's with an alien and a panda bear? The vocals remind me a little of the weirdo theatricality of The B-52’s and the music is similar to the muscular and moody post-punk we heard on albums by The Cure and The Smiths. The band also reminded me of a more modern indie band that I like, Wolf Parade. Bauhaus was probably an influence on them. Overall I enjoyed this. It’s dark and a little wild. But I enjoyed it at a bit of distance. Cool to hear but nothing I’ll revisit anytime soon.

Pretty good, groovy album. I know that bauhaus was like an art movement that was very ~cool~ and avant garde, so I was expecting some art rock type of sound here and it's a little more straightforward than what I expected. I guess I thought it would sound more like bauhaus art looks? I so however think the tracks "Ear Wax" and "1. David Jay 2. Peter Murphy 3. Kevin Haskins..." do bit of this abstract sound that I was looking for. I do like the wacky synths on "In Fear of Fear". I do love the piano slams at the end of "Muscle in Plastic". I do like the weird panned plucked instruments (filtered guitars?) at the midway point in "Mask". This whole track is cool and sounds like the band Interpol to me (even though Interpol came out after this band). I do like the mostly~ bass solo track "In Fear of Dub". Oddly enough most of the songs that I like the most on this album are the ones with the lowest play counts on Spotify. I ended up liking the album more the further I got into it.

Love a bit of goth and post-punk, and wasn't familiar with this album, so it was a very nice discovery. Judging by some of the reviews I need to get hold of the CD reissue as some of the bonus tracks generated quite a few comments... Fave track - "The Man With X-Ray Eyes" sounded most gothy. Liked the dancepunkiness of "Dancing", too...

Similar vocal stlyle to the Sisters of Mercy. Not bad, but a bit dirgy - though an incongruous track about pancakes surprised me.

I like this style in general, and some of the tracks sound very different and interesting. The album is a bit long, though; there is definitely some filler that could be left out.

I like this record more when it's energy levels are higher. The varied instrumentation, including saxophone and piano, are nice. The slower, darker moments are also nice, though my attention is held more during the livelier tracks. Favorite tracks: "Of Lillies and Remains", "Dancing", "The Man With X-Ray Eyes"

Highlight: Kick in the Eye, The Passion of Lovers. I'm not sure how to interact with this album. It feels like it's having a conversation I don't know enough to keep up with.

Haunted goth sound, very early 80s. not a far four songs in but still willing to give it a chance. So far I'm not enjoying this album. May give some of their other albums a listen but this one wasn't one of my favorites.

This feels like one of those albums that either a) your already a fan of the band and know their music or b) put this on as background noise just to keep you company while you do other tasks.

Often a second listen helps me to appreciate an album more. It made it worse today. Sometimes a few decades help. Bauhaus was the favorite band of my first college roommate in 1986. I tried then, and I tried today. What is one supposed to feel when one listens to this? And is that something one would choose to feel? *sigh*

Another one that I don't think is for me. There is some interest for me with the music, maybe parts in minor keys are intriguing. But that wasn't enough to put this album in the keeper pile.

This was fine. I didn't hate it.

There were certainly some interesting points and a few fleeting, catchy moments - but most of the time I spent wishing it was over. I did not enjoy listening to this the first time through, and grew increasingly irritable as I slogged through a second listen. I have no desire to hazard a third.

It's somewhere between Joy Division's mechanical gloom and The B-52's' quirky yelping. Admittedly that sounds like quite an eclectic mix, but having heard quite a few albums of this era now I'd say other groups seemed to be doing similar kinds of things at around the same time, but slightly better. The title track was my favourite. 2.5

I’ve never listened to Bauhaus before and I get the sense this probably shouldn’t have been my first taste of them. It’s okay, but maybe a bit melodramatic for my tastes.

I had never heard of this. They really brought out the fun in goth. I loved the theatricality of the album. So many unexpected twists and turns in each song.

Absolutely loved this album, totally off the wall, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't find the lyrics captivating. Interesting.

Ah, the first goth band. The lyrics were the best part, with the style of song delving into funk at times. I can’t rate the bonus tracks, though I did like them a little better than the album. A lot more of the “spooky reggae” sound that Bauhaus is known for, including a song about Debbie Harry of Blondie, and a recipe for fish cakes. Still not sure why this album was chosen of Bauhaus’ debut, “In the Flat Field”, which is more influential and arguably a better album. Still though, this album wasn’t bad.

So i'd listened to this when it came up a couple of months ago and forgot to rank it. That's because it's quite forgettable. So i've re-listened to it. It's how i'd imagine a soundtrack to East Germany (done by a 1981 English band).

I enjoyed this early touchstone in gothic rock more than I thought I would, and grateful it's not anything above 35 minutes, but I won't be particularly excited to hear it again. Bassist David J is like someone in fancy dress at a funeral: he's having a great time and keeping things entertaining where nobody else is. His accomplished basslines are the reason to hear (and revisit) the songs "Dancing", "Kick in the Eye" and "In Fear of Fear". Peter Murphy's vocals are very low in the mix and occasionally cut through ("Dancing"). They have next-to-no finesse or technique, but serve the songs and add to the gloomy atmosphere very well. Drums are primal and tight, ranging from tom-based patterns on the opening track to a bona-fide disco beat in "Kick in the Eye." There are some other highlights here: "Of Lilies and Remains" is a bleakly engaging spoken-word narrative with an interesting concept and lyrics. "Hollow Hills" is dark, brooding, formless- gothic rock at its most indulgent. It's the upbeat material that appeals most to me here, mainly on account of the bass-playing. The songs and the mood are solid, but it's one I'll have to be under a certain cloud to revisit.

What the f*** are these songs about? Sounds like someone told an AI to create music and it just spat out some nonsense. I really don’t see any redeeming qualities to this album. 1/10

Definitely got more into it the more of a chance I gave it. It has that 80s vocal-trappings which sometimes bring it down a bit for me, but damn there are some nice grooves in here as well as some interesting instrumentation. Had to listen to it twice, was originally a 3.5 rounded down to 3 but I think I have to go up to 4 since it is intriguing enough to me. Especially as the album evolves/devolves into experimental.

It’s somewhat reminiscent of Joy Division in that it has that Martin Hannett style wall of sound production that sounds like it was recorded underwater or in someone’s bathroom. Unlike Joy Division though, this was good, not as depressing and didn’t want to make me slit my wrists. It’s just balls to the floor straight ahead industrial post/punk no wave that often funks. It’s good stuff and you can dance to a lot of it. Even better, for once the bonus tracks are not just a bunch of shit demos slapped on the end as an afterthought, they actually add to the overall package, rather than detract from it. Winning!

Didn’t really know what to take away from this album. Felt Like it was all over the place as an alternative album. There were parts that were harder rock and others that felt more foreign and indie style. Overall it never really gelled together and felt messy. 3.6/10

"Muscle In Plastic" has good bass and drums and energy and stuff -Some cool bass lines and guitar sounds in "Hollow Hills" -"Kick In The Eye" has got a nice bass and drum groove -Not a whole lot making me want to come back to it

Surprisingly accessible and clear to hear how Bauhaus have influenced other bands. The Bravery, Interpol. lots of Bauhaus in their sound. I always had Bauhaus pegged as a band that were impressive but difficult to love, that's changed after spending time with this album. I'll definitely be dipping further into their work

I've never heard of Bauhaus before, but you can for sure hear how they've influenced later post punk bands and early goth rock bands. It's not my go to genre by any stretch of the imagination and I'm just not into some of the songs. But there are some absolute winners here.

Vous n'êtes pas sans savoir qu'aujourd'hui, le générateur a élu l'un de ses chouchous comme album du jour, avec The Dark Side Of The Moon de Pink Floyd. J'ai depuis de nombreuses années défendu le fait que cet album était un album surcoté, seulement apprécié d'une classe de hipsters se la jouant puriste. L'heure est venue de le démontrer. Je dispose d'actuellement un album de retard, avant le grand affrontement avec les Pink Floyd. Tenez vous prêt, les murs vont trembler.

3.5 | Supuse que Bauhaus estaría en algún lugar de la lista. No se si vaya a venir el debut pero creo que esta es la elección obvia para poner en caso de solo poner un disco. Aunque personalmente me agrada mucho más algo como Bela Lugosi is Dead aquí es música mucho más accesible, a pesar de iniciar con dos canciones poco convencionales el resto del disco es bastante melódico, en tanto que el disco anterior podía sentirse aun más oscuro que el que ha tocado de The Cure aquí se siente más hacia ese sonido de Siouxsie. Son los verdaderos padres del Gótico (al menos en mi opinión) y creo que es muy simple, a quien le gusta el estilo le pueden encantar, a quien no le gusta le sonarán a escuincles pretenciosos hablando de lo oscuuuuro que es mi vida. Debo decir que caigo en el primer campo.

El disco se me hizo pesado. Sólo conocía The Passion of Lovers. Aunque brinca entre el post-punk y lo gótico, se nota un estilo bien definido que terminará siendo una gran influencia durante todos los ochentas, sólo no entiendo Harry, que parece más una canción de Soda Stereo en el 88. 3.5 Estrellas que voy a subir a 4 porque sí es un gran disco aunque no sea de mi total agrado. Tiene sus momentos, a veces pasado de darks y gótico… pero cuando llegamos al rollo de los Fish Cakes me perdieron. Nunca había oído más allá de una rola o dos de Bauhaus (ninguna de este disco) y ya me imaginaba que iban a estar en la lista (por su importancia histórica) y que no me iba a encantar. Ni modo, lo darks, lo gótico, los toques de electrónica, lo demasiado alternativo no es para mí.

Mask is "experimental" in that inconsistent way where half of these tracks kind of kick ass, and the other half makes them sound like a goth rock take on the B-52s—which is something I wish I could say as a compliment. That being said, the album is propelled by the MVP work of Kevin Haskins and David J to the point that even the misfires usually have a sick bass line or drum pattern to latch onto while everybody else is doing whatever weird bullshit they wanted to fit into the record. It's solid, just maybe steer clear of those reggae-infused bonus tracks.

kind of a weird pick for this list, but still a fun look into a lesser known bauhaus album. the entire thing seems and sounds slapdash which is pretty cool when it works, which is less often than you want.

I might be a Bauhaus fan now! Kind of had them looped in with The Cure but I enjoyed it more than them. I can definitely see where AFI got some of their modern sound.

I get that these guys were innovative and unique for the time. You can definitely tell they influenced a lot of my favorite 80s bands. That said, this album didn't really do anything for me.

Entertaining enough

It's raw, dark, and distinctively gothic. Very true to the punk formula but really takes the "screw everything" to an entirely new level. Vocals are bad. Production is off. Instruments clash. This all sets a high level of dissonance and chaos that makes for a haunting listen. Perhaps a "so bad it's good" situation. However, I feel their previous album did this a lot better. This album is still cohesive but experiments too much without having the ideas flourish as desired. The first side is pretty great, and if the second side were the same, I would have given it 4 stars. The second side of the album is way poppier, feeling more like a "dark New Wave" people can dance to. "Kick in the eye" is great, "The Man with x-ray eyes" is decent, "Mask" is ok (too experimental but I like it), and "In Fear of Fear" and "Muscle in Plastic" are poor choices. Full of funky bass lines, this record is a window into the house I lived in, in 1981/82. This record was always on the turntable and caused my roommate to die his hair black, and start wearing eyeliner. It sounds a bit sad and dated now, but the memories are worth at least a three.

I had some Bauhaus on vinyl back in the day. I thought they were good but not great. My view hasn't changed.

I think the vast majority of people who know Bauhaus are really only familiar with "Bela Lugosi's Dead". But since that single never made it onto an album, 1001 serves up this LP to pay hommage to these pioneers of Goth. I like Passions of Lovers but which reminds me of Joy Division, the next track is edgy and reminds me of the aforementioned Bela, but the rest...
