Reviews (page 3 of 14)

Quite Frankly my long standing favorite Jazz album 10 ★★★★★

A true titan of 50s jazz up alongside Kind Of Blue by Miles Davis. A cool as a coolcumber second half and basically unbeatable first half. Blue Rondo Alla Turka is the link between classical, jazz, 2+2+2+3 Middle Eastern folk and 70s prog. Is there anything more misty and gorgeous than the extended piano intro to Strange Meadow Lark? Take Five is the name of the third track and also my answer to when the album asks how many stars it would like.

Palavras me escapam. 5/5

There’s nothing else I can say

One of the all time greatest. Take Five is a standard, but I love Blue Rondo a la Turk.

Take 5 coming on during the monopoly game in Sopranos Home Movies is just 🤌🤌🤌

I've never listened to this album, but I knew one or two songs (1). Way better than I expected. No doubt it's a jazz classic, in the same vein as Kind of Blue.

5. Smooth, rhythmic, somehow both classic and innovative at the same time. Several occasions where I was surprised or turned my head. Take Five is a top ten song OAT for sure. Glad I got this one today.

One of the best jazz albums of all time.

I was expecting the audio quality to sound like it was recorded in a garbage can being rolled down a hill, but the quality was pristine. These compositions are very well put together, everyone in this group is clearly world class, and Take Five was extremely good.

Loved it when I first listened to it years ago and love it now. Wait, wait - I'm gonna try my hand at one of those cringey one-liner funny review: "14/8? 9/8? 5/4? more like 5/5 stars amirite" Anyways, re-listening to this was great; I think I really do enjoy cool jazz more than other upbeat jazz subgenres. Take Five is superb (that drum solo!!) and is my favorite from this album (and also clearly an inspiration for another song, coincidentally, that I was listening to earlier today: KG&TLW's the river). Blue Rondo à la Turk, Kathy's Waltz, and Three to Get Ready are up there as well, really excellent. The only really negative thing I can say about this album is that I put it on as background music, but couldn't concentrate on my work because its just so good. Definitely going to revisit this one soon with my full attention. 9.5/10 Favs: Take Five; Blue Rondo à la Turk; Kathy's Waltz; Three to Get Ready; Strange Meadow Lark

5/5. Fortunately, I was already in a jazz mood when this album dropped on my list so I was geared up to experience some more smooth jazz. This was an amazing listen, with these different time signatures, I never fell into a lull that sometimes happens with slower jazz records. Granted, this also had some more upbeat cool jazz and the classic Take Five that really stands above the rest, with a fantastic drum solo. I don't have any complaints about this one, an accessible yet complex jazz album that can be listened to anytime, each musician shining in their own way. Best Song: Take Five, Blue Rondo à la Turk, Kathy's Waltz

Miiight be the greatest jazz album ever. I cannot rave about it enough so I will just keep this short. Perfect album.

Jazz at it's very best. Totally accessible and requires cocktails and cigarettes.

Cool jass man

Need a montage in a TV show or movie? "Take Five," bitches. This old boomer loves this old boomer jazz album. The first three songs are so damn great and at 38 minutes, this is very listenable again and again. Top tracks: "Take Five," "Blue Rondo à la Turk," "Everybody's Jumpin'," "Strange Meadow Lark"

Goated.

The perfect modern old school

5 star for multiple reasons, but most of it boils down to the fact that I really enjoyed listening through it. Jazz is always one of my go-tos for when I want to listen to something, but I hadn't got to this yet, but it was so cool seeing all the influences from some of my favourite artists. Really fun listen overall, and I'd recommend anyone looking into jazz. I also saw lots of influence in pop music in general, and thought I recognised some songs from samples. FAVOURITE TRACKS: Blue Rondo à La Turk, Take Five, Everybody's Jumpin'

Great Instrumental album

I rate this 5/4.

Amazing, great work on all instruments, fun and unusual time signatures and one tune, everyone knows... Need to listen to more of the Quartet. Strong 4.5.

total slay, of course.

Fantastic! Amazing! Influential! Innovative! Creative! Masterful! This is something that I’ve listened to in the past but revisiting was impactful. I cannot say enough good things about this album.

I'm a simple person. I hear jazz polyrhythms, I give five stars. Music theory never clicked for me when I was learning the piano. Albums like this make me wish it had.

I'm not a regular jazz listener, but of course I've heard most of these. Classic album for sure!

loved this album

Love this. An album I come back to regularly

Already know this is 10/10 no notes. I got this CD as a bar mitzvah gift and it was my first jazz, along with weather report. What a great album.

Amazing !!

Masterpiece

Excellent jazz album. Love Brubeck

5/4 stars

Easy listening. This album is repayable over and over again.

Damn good jazz.

Jazz muy fino, muy delicado y agradable de escuchar. Nunca se me hubiera ocurrido una portada mejor para este disco.

Excellent. An easy 5 star rating.

I think my IQ level just went up.

I've loved this album for years. If I could score this higher than a 5 I would. It's amazing. So many of the jazz albums we've had on this just feel like random nonsense that start, play for 8 minutes then end. This one is amazing. Each track has a motif, the musicians play around with parts the others have played and it means everything flows like actual songs. It's cohesive, but the musicianship is still amazing. Each performer can capture you at any moment. Then there are the time signatures. Having such interesting time signatures but having them in songs in a way that you don't really notice until someone points it out is always brilliant. The timings haven't just been shoe-horned in, they all work. Fantastic.

Fun, fresh, accessible

Loved the first track. It follows an Aksak rhythm, which is something that was big in the Ottoman Empire. Hearing the sequence in a jazz track was cool.

The greatest

Playful and energetic

Jazz at its finest

Feels like jazz that even total noobs can appreciate. I loved it and will loop this album as study music. Tracks to Track: Strange Meadow Lark

5/4 should be Dave Brubeck Day as well as Star Wars day. This album is why.

***** What a Discovery! Did Not know this classic Album. Totally like it.

Piano led western exploration of unconventional time signatures full of exquisite playing, a wide array of tempos and moods, and a timeless jazz standard. Faultless.

Still has an edge like you sitting right there with them. But it’s major chords and subtlety all around. Nothing in your face but it’s got an edge. Should be shot into space for other realms to get and enjoy.

I bought the vinyl for this record, and this turned me on to a whole new genre. Wonderful!

One of the best cool jazz albums of this era. Its a great album, each track is gold.

hell yeah

Great album! Very fun jazz, lots of color and movement without being chaotic or overwhelming. A little short, running only 36 minutes.

Classic

Love this album, one of the first jazz albums I heard as a teen and Take Five made me realize I could be into it. Great throughout and absolutely worthy of being on this list.

I listened to it several more times and now convinced it’s a masterpiece.

This was one of the first jazz records that really hooked me, alongside Kind of Blue. I still return to it from time to time and each time I still get so much pleasure from it. Dave Brubeck is just so effortlessly cool. And yet despite the broad appeal of the album, it is also has a lot of range and complexity.

To be clear, this is a jazz 5. I have a whole separate scale for jazz.

As a free jazz aficionado, this is basic—lightyears from Ayler, Coltrane, Sanders, and Coleman. But damn, finally, a real classic. Take Five is in my headphone test rotation—if it doesn’t slap, the cans go back. Top 10 basic jazz you need to listen to. Cooler than anything you’ll ever make.

Just crazy good piano jazz!

'Take Five' is such an iconic track. The rest of the album was an enjoyable listen as well. Fun!

Rating (1-5): ✩✩✩✩✩ (Maybe in the lower tier of 5) Higlighted songs: Take Five I really liked it >w< It really fits my taste

Masterful. If you enjoy jazz, this is easily one of the greatest albums of all time.

Perfect album for a rainy day alone in the office.

yeah okay polyrhythms! big fan of this one. “take five” is a HUGE jazz staple and i love it so much. was super excited to hear it. the walking bass is a star. 5/5.

thank you department of state for creating jazz

Blue Rondo, Take Five, Kathy’s Waltz

Time Out is wonderful and masterful showing in jazz. I absolutely love this album and can't find anthing bad to say. It was calming, relaxing, peaceful, but yet something that you can really dive into and digest. 9.8/10 93/1001

absolutely mindblowingly amazing! now this is my kind of jazz. and i am extremely picky with the kind of jazz i like, as i normally don’t enjoy it much. but add in prog rock elements like in the first song and i am hooked. literally my first thought was “PROG JAZZ!?” and yeah “take five” is iconic. i forgot what it sounded like so when it came on i instantly went ”IT’S THIS SONG!” 😮 i will admit it mostly went back to, i don’t want to say boring jazz, but more traditional sounding jazz. i much more preferred the sounds of the “prog” section in the first track. the last song “pick up sticks” was very nice and didn’t feel “boring”. a well deserved 5/5 album.

Didn’t finish this one, but side one was really good. Take Five is easily the standout track. Those drums on it are amazing.

This is a classic. Considered one of the best jazz albums ever. I agree. Brilliant from start to finish. Brubeck was a trailblazer and just a very fine person. This album makes me believe there is still hope for us wretched humans. God bless you, Dave Brubecj.

Timeless, catchy, clever, incredibly listenable. A great introduction to jazz for all ages

The fact that Dave was able to create an entire album out of unpopular time signatures and still have them all sound seamless and intentional as well as cohesive deserves four stars on its own. Add that it’s fun and enjoyable to listen to and you have yourselves one of jazz’s greatest albums. Fantastic work, Mr. Brubeck. 5/5

I enjoyed this so much that when the album was over, I just let Spotify keep playing similar music all day lol

masterpiece

10/10… Jazz

I was excited to see this on my list today since Take Five is one of my favorite songs. Listening to the album on my drive to work was giving main character energy! LOL

It's a classic for a reason.

This album is fantastic. This is my second time this year listening to this album. The arrangements and songs are great! I didn’t “get” this album when I first listened, but “take five” stuck with me. After a year trying to understand jazz and bebop, now I get it.

This album will always hold a special place in my heart. It takes me right back to high school band when I was just starting to discover how playful and complex music could be. Learning about odd time signatures felt like unlocking a secret language, and this album made it feel exciting and effortless. It's not just great jazz... it's a nostalgic reminder of when music started to really come alive for me.

This album is an old favorite of mine, an entry-point into jazz. It is obviously interesting for its non-standard time signatures (the title Time Out even indicating that time is a major motif throughout), most notably its two major songs, "Blue Rondo a la Turk" and "Take Five", in 9/8 and 5/4 respectively. In comparison to other jazz this is not that wild, but from a general audience perspective this is novel. After listening to a lot of jazz over the years, these songs feel "safe" to my ear, but mass appeal is not necessarily a bad thing. And I may be overestimating a general audience's interest and attention span for an album like this. But I shouldn't worry about what others think. This is a gem in jazz and in music in general. It has that especially "cool" feel between the drums and Paul Desmond's sax. Desmond's distinct sax tone remains my favorite across all artists-- I once heard it described as being like black oil spilling through the reed. The time signatures and Brubeck's piano add just enough spice to give a little edge. Ultimately it feels a little like a distillation of complex ideas and theory into something digestible for wide audiences. Three of four men in the Dave Brubeck Quartet were white (notable to have an integrated band in 1959), including Brubeck himself. So some may interpret this album as appropriating jazz (and even Balkan music with "Blue Rondo a la Turk"), but it seems to be done with reverence and still adding something novel to the discourse, i.e. not just copying it for profit. I don't doubt that "Take Five" and the album welcomed quite a few people into a world that is often gate-kept. Ultimately, this is a triumph in taking complex ideas and making them presentable and understandable. This translation is often the most difficult task in the academic/scientific world and is just as difficult in music. The album is, ahem, *timeless*.

Легендарный альбом, очень круто записанный, а это конец 50х. Вест коаст белый джаз, прорывной для своего времени.

One of my favorite albums. Paul Desmond is so cool. Great drumming, as well. A pop album that has layers to it. Of all the classic jazz albums this the one I come back to the most because it's so listenable.

The album that made me say "maybe jazz IS for me!" Very accessible; short, sweet and catchy, with some cool time signature stuff. I learned about this one from NPR's Pop Culture Happy Hour and was so stoked to get it today!

pretty awesome, real gem

Been getting into Jazz a little bit more lately, glad I got this, VERY GOOD ALBUM!

I was already intimately familiar with this album. It's one of the albums that turned me on to the entire Jazz genre, especially Cool Jazz. It is effortlessly timeless (see what I did there?). Just beautiful. Worth a listen any time.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Allé, take five

Awesome jazz that shouldn't be considered entry level but is

When I first did a deep dive into jazz I bought the Penguin Guide to Jazz on CD, a huge book, and then bought a selection of albums to which they had awarded five crowns (one up from five stars…). I had previously listened to Miles Davis and Charlie Parker but I really didn’t know what I liked. Time Out was one of the albums I bought but, despite the odd time signatures, I considered it lounge jazz, something to play in the background. This time round I gave it proper attention, with headphones, and no distractions. It is excellent. It is obvious, particularly on the incredible opener, “Blue Rondo A la Turk”, that the music is as influenced by modern classical and Middle Eastern music as it is by what was going on in the jazz scene at the time. It is amazing that music that can be challenging when really concentrated on (try counting BRALT - 2/2/2/3), with riffs that maybe only djent bands play these days, can also be ‘easy-listening’. “Take Five” is the other famous track but there isn’t a bad one here. Brubeck’s piano playing, soft melodies, intricate runs, hammering chords, is stunning and Paul Desmond’s alto sax is unmistakably him, but Eugene Wright and Joe Morello, on bass and drums respectively, deserve huge plaudits. The band is simply fantastic and it often sounds like more than four musicians. Produced by Teo Macero, who would later extract the gold from Miles’s freeform improvisations to create albums such as In A Silent Way and Bitches Brews, the sound is clear - it is like they are in the room (listen to the snap of the bass strings against the fingerboard). So glad I dove back in. Now back to counting…

One of the all-time greatest palettes for a jazz album. Simultaneously chaotic & restorative. Standout track is: “Take Five” and “Kathy’s Waltz”

Love the alternative time signatures on this album! Take 5 and Blue Rondo à la Turk are the standouts.

Keiharde jazz

Great jazz album

My love for jazz peaked here.

Back in 2008 I had the very distinct pleasure of seeing Dave Brubeck perform in Calgary. I can remember very clearly that this was the only performance I’ve ever seen where the artist received a standing ovation before they even started playing. Considering he was 87 at the time, I was absolutely blown away by the show. Dave Brubeck is an absolute legend, and I feel truly lucky that I got to see him play. This album is absolutely incredible, it’s complicated and jazzy, but it’s so easy to listen to. It makes you feel like you’re sitting in a dark smoky cafe in some far off country, in some alternate universe where everything is delightful. There’s so much that could be said here, but I think it’s impossible to really come up with anything that hasn’t already been said about this truly special record. 5*

I've often said that salmon is fish for people that don't really like seafood. It has a nice soft and flaky texture that's not weird at all, a mild, sweet, inoffensive flavor, and it's commonly prepared in a wide variety of very approachable and crowd-pleasing ways. If you ask people who don't particularly like seafood, but don't dislike it, what their favorite fish is, there's a very high chance they'll answer salmon. In a similar fashion, I think Dave Brubeck is jazz for people who don't particularly like jazz. Much like all of the common ick factors of seafood are nullified with salmon, you won't find any jarring tempo changes, screeching horns, or atonal intervals in a Dave Brubeck album. It's approachable and easy to enjoy not "challenging". I don't mean this as a diss on either salmon or Dave Brubeck. I quite like both of them, and in fact together they sound like the foundation of a lovely date night. Sometimes things are well-liked and accessible because they are good, and in the case of art sometimes making something that is both accessible and not boring is actually quite difficult. I don't think think 'Time Out' was set out to be a particularly popular or accessible jazz record. It was intended as an exploration of unusual time signatures inspired by the quartet's travels to other parts of the world, which really sounds like it would be set up for quite the opposite fate. Perhaps thinking such an album wouldn't be successful is an underestimation of either the public's appetite for a bit of complexity in their music or the Dave Brubeck Quartet's ability to compose it in a digestible way. There is obviously the superstar hit "Take Five", a classic, a jazz standard, undoubtedly one of the most iconic records both in jazz music and in the world of unusual time signatures. This track is a five-minute masterpiece, with the thunderous drum solo especially noteworthy. But every track on this album is fantastic. The composition is thoughtful and smart and the playing is airtight, effortlessly cool, beautifully balanced between the alto sax wafting like smoke over the boom and crash of the drum and pianos as the bass quietly looks on and keeps time. Other than "Take Five", the most popular composition from this album is "Blue Rondo à la Turk", a lively and scintillating track that opens the album with a bang. But my favorite track is "Strange Meadow Lark", which I think is the hidden gem of this album. It is so soft and evocative and inspired and in some way I feel it is the emotional center of the album. You've also got "Three to Get Ready", "Kathy's Waltz" and "Pick Up Sticks"... there's no going wrong here. A flawless, landmark album from one of the most iconic jazz outfits, led by a visionary pianist, guided by an interesting creative purpose released in the year that remains the high water mark for jazz as a whole. A rare album that befits the designation of an album you must hear before you die. Playlist pick: "Strange Meadow Lark"

Elegant, fun, and all around fantastic.

As a fan of jazz I loved this album! With iconic Time Out already in my collection, I was intrigued by track one which was deeply nostalgic of old peanuts re runs I watched as a kid! It’s only 39 minutes long so a great starter album for those interested in modern ish jazz

Love this album! I’m a huge fan of odd time signatures, and an even bigger fan of Paul Desmond’s sax playing - his tone and the way he adds these little triplet runs all over the place with ease - just perfect. The changing rhythms make it so arrangements don’t fall victim to the riff/bunch of solos/end with riff format that can make listening to a whole jazz album a bit maddening for me.

I’d estimate ive listened to this album over 50 times in my life as an alto sax player - Paul Desmond made it cool

Blue Rondo is almost my favorite jazz jam

5 out of 4 stars.

Music has no right to be this good. Some of the best jazz I've ever listened to.

Really lovely and excellent jazz record. Perfect for a lazy Sunday morning. Cool jazz baby...

A fun, enjoyable, quick jazz album. I'd heard Take Five somewhere before, but I liked the energy in the whole album. Horns were great.

Never criticize your own cooking at the table. Your guests may love it. Story I read is that Brubeck, having come up with the idea of doing an entire album of songs in odd meters, told the band to go write a song in 5/4. They got back together and ... nothing; shoe gazing. Brubeck said, "c'mon someone must have done something over the last weeks." Paul Desmond (sax) offered that he had two melodies, but they weren't very good, and he couldn't do anything with them. Those two melodies became Take Five, one of the most popular songs in jazz history. I love this album. Sure, they aren't the most sophisticated jazz artists. But Brubeck's incorporation of French Impressionism stylings, Desmond's tone, and the abundance of melodic ideas make them a constant pleasure to listen to. One of my favorite parts of the album is the ROOM. The plate reverb on Dark Side of the Moon is gorgeous. But I think the natural reverb of this studio, which the engineers captured brilliantly on these tracks, is about the best ever recorded. The golden aura it creates around Desmond's sax is, well, it's just to die for.

Absolutely loved this, listened on Sunday morning and was perfect. Take five will likely be the only jazz song I recognise in this list

It’s a classic for a reason.

Amazing, one of my first jazz albums!

THIS WAS SO GOOD

What a great surprise this album was to listen to. It has a lot of great jazz songs and then Take Five came on. I had no Idea where this song was from or who made it but I have heard it many times before. This was a real treat of an album, exactly what I had hoped to find when I first started listening through this list.

I love a good jazz album. This was upbeat, and fun. Time out, a song that I immediately recognized, but never put a name to.

da! zašto je ovo toliko dobro?

Didn’t know that Dave Brubeck made the take five song

Great vibes, love the jazz. Great music to work 5/5

Listened before?: Not all the way through, but definitely. These pieces are ubiquitous. Great! No notes.

What can I say? One of the all time great jazz albums.

A perfect jazz album accompanied by being so unique

I have heard Take Five so many times, but I honestly would not have been able to tell you who it was. And now maybe I'll remember. Also, am I the only one thinking about Severance when hearing some of these songs now?

Every year or so something reminds me of this one and love coming back to it. Take Five - no. 1 jazz single of all time? So good!

Classic album. Everyone in the world has heard a melody from this album sometime in their life.

my favorite album so far

A perfect jazz album. Classic.

Classic jazz. Excellent

absolutely amazing

It's unfortunate that Brubeck's skin color gave him recognition that was not afforded to his peers, but by all reports, he was an unwilling recipient of that recognition. I'm not going to hold that against him given the credit he gave to his black contemporaries. The most unfortunate part is that Brubeck and his quartet are legitimately genius. This is one of the most played jazz albums of all time for a very good reason. Without sacrificing any of the depth or richness of the genre, Time Out manages to be catchy and listenable. I can enjoy it as much with my rhythm guitarist as I can with my wife (who loves CCM and Taylor Swift with a passion I cannot understand). I'll admit that I had not listened to the full album before. Nothing jumps out more than Blue Rondo or Time Out but I loved the piano intro on Strange Meadow Lark and the rest of it was great. Easy 5 stars.

One of the few jazz records I have on vinyl. And glad I do.

The perfect jazz album

amazing

Great, cool jazz from a true visionary.

One of the very few jazz albums I’m familiar with and still a great one. Take Five is the famous track and it’s probably my favorite, but I also like Blue Rondo a lot. After a couple listens I Spotify-likes all but one track: Pick up Sticks.

incrível!

gold star.

Take Five, what a classic

Simultaneously catchy and experimental. It might be fairly tame by today's standards but for the 50s this is so unique. The sax is a major highlight throughout.

This was great! Never would have listened to it. Thanks 1001!

Easily my favourite jazz album of all time. 9.6/10 Best Tracks: “Blue Rondo à la Turk” “Take Five” “Three to Get Ready” “Kathy’s Waltz”

the BEST album you can possibly listen to while making oatmeal and stewed apples 5/5 🍎

Very suave - easy listening. Instruments complement each other well.

One of my all time favorites. Fantastic vibe all the way through.

9/8, 5/4, 3/4, 4/4.

Excellent

I'm not sure if I was in a good mood when this was playing or playing it put me in a good mood but it's good. The kind of jazz that maybe isn't as challenging as some. I think anyone could enjoy this album while also being technically brilliant. It's the kind of jazz that you might hear in a movie and someone who would never listen to jazz eats it up.

Kind of crazy to have two (maybe more!) jazz standards in one record. Blue Rondo A La Turk and Take Five are things I played in high school that my teacher assured me were something eeeeveryone knew how to play. He was right of course/ The genre obviously existed before this album, but this is such a great example of it. Everything is just so damn smooth and the performances have just enough feeling in them to not be robotic. The recording itself is excellent. I could listen to this all day.

One of the best albums ever recorded. Mixed and compound meter aside, everyone on here plays like they live in 5 and 7. Beautiful playing from Desmond, Morello's fills and drum solos are to die for, and Brubeck knows exactly what works and when. A master class of jazz, song composition, soloing, all of the above.

Masterpiece!

This is a great Jazz album. Chill and groovy and probably more technical than my poor knowledge can handle. Take Five alone deserves 5 stars!

Great chill vibes

This is viewed as one of jazz's all-time greats for a reason!

classic jazz album, memories

The good stuff

Absolutely love this throwback!

I like jazz. Sue me!

Good jazz

I could listen to Dave Brubeck all day

Great jazz album, and one I had not heard before. So it was a nice surprise and just what I needed this morning after waking up way too early. It set such a nice chill mood during breakfast while dogsitting.

Smooth jazz

Loved the music and was even familiar with one of the songs. Sounds like New York at night :)

Classic album. One of my favorites for a long time.

No words perfect

Really comfy, and suddenly a classic showed up as well that I'd forgotten.

Banger maybe come dine with me music

We've all heard Take 5 too often to really appreciate it. Good to listen to the rest of the record and be reminded how great these guys were.

I would say that this album is perhaps the most popular and iconic Jazz record of all time. This record reminds me so much of my elder brother who unfortunately is no longer with us. Like me he was an enthusiastic music fan and I probably owe my equally love of music to his influence. But we had diverse tastes. He was a big Jazz fan this was one of his favourite records. But at that time a did not get Jazz at all. I remember having heated debates over the version of Rondo on this album and that of The Nice who were much more to my liking. When I listen to that track nowadays I must concede that I think Keith Emerson owes a lot to Dave Brubeck’s version. The big track on this album Take Five is something I bet everyone into their music are familiar with. It is a masterpiece and even the most Jazz hating critic must admire the construction, way out time signature and the fact it is an instant recognisable toe tapping tune. Over the years I have become to appreciate Jazz and take on what my brother also saw in the genre. Like many more people this will always be my favourite Jazz album. Love you Frank and thank you for the music. 5/5 25/3/25

I really like Desmond's sax tone. And loved the fact that all tunes on the album had a common "playing with time signatures" theme. Great stuff.

Absolutely the best. Read a lot of reviews about listening to jazz by the guys that invented the genre. Interestingly, I remember seeing a doc that talked about Brubeck creating music over a kid over the rhythm of water pumps on his parent's ranch as a kid. This was when he hadn't been exposed to jazz. Kid just had talent and went on to create some of the best music ever created.

* One of my favourite jazz albums

Perfect soundtrack for a Sunday drive to a vineyard lol

Proto Ffxiv battle music for track 1. Then take five was instantly recognized as "that jazz song you always hear". Hell yeah.

I just recently purchased this album on vinyl and it sounds amazing and the music is also incredible even for moderate fans of jazz.

Awesome album, the best.

Stars? Take 5

Played some of these songs in high school band class. Very cool album

So that's where all those songs come from

Even if it was just Take Five, it would be a classic, but its all great. And I am not a jazz person. Talent is talent

I needed that.

Great album. The first track my son said reminded him of Charlie Brown. He’s right about that Vince Guaraldi vibe. When “Take Five” came on it was instantly recognizable, although I realized I had never heard the whole song through. It had some interesting solos and was so nice to hear music be played in a lively sense. Seems more like a recording of an event rather than a produced product. Very refreshing listen.

The project has done it to me again! I hate jazz, so why am I giving this album five stars and adding it to my Tidal library? Perhaps it was the setting in which I listened to it, on the patio with a drink on the first balmy afternoon of a Mediterranean spring. Or maybe it was just that it caught me in the right mood at the right time. In any case, I'm not saying that this album has inured me to the pleasure of jazz, but I can certainly see myself hitting play on Time Out again and again in the future.

A classic Jazz album, can’t go wrong with this

I own this record on vinyl and I have listened to it a few times and absolutely love it. Such good grooves, awesome musicianship all around, and the funky time signatures make my brain happy. Five stars, easily.

pretty good

That was some funky ass jazz

Wonderful!

Easy listening, with a lot of recognizable songs, and interesting too. Loved this one.

Classic

jazz at its finest (in my humble opinion) accessible but also just a solid as hell outing. Definitely in the jazz album pantheon and deservedly so

Jazz and more jazz. Great stuff.

it gives the pleasure of a triggered thought

Music to be put on hold to (complimentary)

Phenomenal

What should one say about this album. Probably one of the generally most popular albums of jazz - also for people, who are not into jazz. Normally that means, that the music is simpler, easier to grasp. But in my opinion this is not the case here. A great album by one of the great jazz musicians.

really catchy. really relaxing. The mix is perfect.

Jazz can be good apparently

One time a coworker was playing this album and when I overheard it I asked if they were listening to a Final Fantasy soundtrack. Granted this was a 60 year old lady and probably had no idea what I was talking about, it just sounded so familiar. "Blue Rondo a la Turk" and "Take Five" were definitely used as inspiration for the battle music and Cinco de Chocobo from Final Fantasy VII respectively (Cinco=Five). And that is a good thing as it brought up a conversation with someone I normally wouldn't have had, that I still remember 10+ years later, and introduced me to Dave Brubeck. It didn't fully turn me on to Jazz, but definitely helped make it more tolerable as before I just thought it was chaotic noise. Great album overall, and I really enjoy that it makes me think of one of my favorite games too. I don't like a ton of jazz, but the jazz I like I really enjoy. Favorite track "Blue Rondo a la Turk" 5/5

Great little jazz album to work to

The best

great!

Delightful

I love the Dave Brubeck Quartet!

Wonderful and classic album! I think I'm becoming a jazz fan. Favourite tracks: Blue Rondo, Take Five

Amazing early Jazz Album

1959 US West Coast jazz. (Take Five)

Loveable Jazz Classic and my algorithm picked up great similar music

timeless classic

Mejor, se puede, pero la vara está alta, muy alta. ¡¡Bárbaro!!

Really cool

Catchy, cool jazz with a distinctive piano rhythm. Just like Dave Brubeck probably didn't expect his tunes to become hits, I didn't expect to be so drawn in by this cool jazz, with its saxophones and catchy rhythmic style

I was aware of some of these songs. Loved it.

Maybe second just to Nina Simone in the albums we've done so far. Love it.

This is an iconic album, and was played like a million times at home. It's an album I couldn't dislike even if I wanted to. I can dream these pieces in detail, forward and backwards. Honestly, I adore the rhythm changes, the grand roomy feeling of the recording, the snappiness of the players... I can't not be in love with this album. I can't even walk regularly with this album on. Every part of my body vibes along.

That’s jazz baby

It's hard not to think of this as anything else than iconic and hugely influential. This stands the test of time (out). Great to listen to to relax or to study.

I'm driving to work and color still paints the sky a vibrant pink. My mood is relaxed and I am in no hurry to reach my destination or the end of the album.

the morning bell rang, signaling a new album from the 1001 album generator site. a certain person sat in front of their computer, played some games, failed, ask themself frustratedly “How come I end up where I started?”, open the site, saw this album, and because of their disinterest in jazz, thought about how they can tolerate it. But maybe it is not a mission impossible if they take five minute's break from the shitty stuff... So this is actually a series of really terrible pun: Because of the existence of "Take Five", songs in 5/4 time are randomly added into the routine. back to the album itself. it is one of a kind of a polyrhythmic feast, with me struggling to count the way through the odd meters of the track. "Blue Rondo a la Turk" starts with excited piano vamps and sounds weird while still maintaining a sense of order, changing time signatures every now and then. "Strange Meadow Lark" is just stereotypical jazz, while "Take Five", the ultimate hit on the album, sounds as classy as ever, making "15 steps" the second best 5/4 song imo. in conclusion, if you like head-hurting stuff but think that maths rock or midwest emo is too noisy, you can come and listen to this.

Jazz of the jazz!

Time Out is easily one of the most listenable and complete jazz albums I’ve ever heard. From the iconic “Take Five” to the adventurous rhythms throughout, every track feels fresh and engaging. It’s a timeless masterpiece that’s as accessible as it is brilliant.

Hell of an album. One of the first jazz albums I bought -- a bit randomly -- and I still love it.

Perfect no notes. I don't have a sophisticated taste in jazz and barely know anything so maybe this wouldn't impress someone deeper into it but idk I thought it ruled

Cool jazz for cool cats

This was tight, balanced, and a novel concept. As an erstwhile saxophonist, I was familiar with some of these tracks, but I'd never heard the album as a whole. This is something I will come back to.

top da ascoltare la mattina mentre fai il porridge

++: Blue Rondo à la Turk, Strange Meadow Lark, Take Five, Three to Get Ready, Kathy's Waltz, Everybody's Jumpin', Pick Up Sticks 9,6/10

Straight outta Charlie Brown. Very relaxing, feels like life with your soulmate, living for months in an upscale apartment near a village in a foreign country during the winter season

Five stars even after the first one minute

now this, this album right here is beautifully constructed jazz music. the first ten seconds, i'm already hooked. this is a jazz album that isn't just significant (looking at you, take five), it's probably one of the finest examples of jazz music ever composed in human history. from the slides of the grand piano to the uneven drum rhythms and maybe a few gentle sax accompaniments here and there, this is simultaneously an album that makes you relax and makes you think... think about how david managed to get inspired all across the globe, making these songs. it's a classy jazz album and i can't recommend it more.

Classic, puts me in a better mood

Insta dodatek do stałej kolejki.

I've read whe wiki article about why this album is special and I still don't understand it. But like with most thing in life judging whithout knowledge is the most reasonable thing to do.

Damn, slick af. Słabe 5

I love every second of this, the staple instruments (bass piano drums) lay down the foundation, while the or saxophone fills in the rest. Something like the Bill Evans trio, while it is incredible, doesn't feel quite as complete as this. It is very rhythmically experimental in some areas, like the end of take 5 but I think it pays of very well. Favorite songs: all. Overall around 9/10

iconic

Great album. Too bad it was so short!

All time jazz classic. Take 5/5.

Entspannte Jazzmusik

An easy 5*, a classic from start to finish

Loved this! Another amazing jazz album

An incredible classic

Getting a good pick of 5s from the generator recently :)

Famous jazz composer, reminds me of Peanuts

Take five. Get five.

Takes five

One of my favourite jazz albums from my favourite jazz band

This album fucks (and then puts on a silk robe).

10/10 no notes!!

Ooh, I really like this one. I realize odd time signature jazz isn’t for everyone but I enjoy it. Had this for a long time but I haven’t heard it in a few years. It needs to get back in regular rotation, Great group of players too.

имба, вайбово, сохранил. подойдет для романтического ужина на фон.

Fabulous

icon status

Own this, love this, own other Dave Brubeck albums too.

Another album I've listened to dozens upon dozens of times. The two tracks pretty much everyone knows are absolutely stellar, of course (Take Five and Blue Rondo A La Turk). But even the lesser known tunes on here are great. Strange Meadowlark has a great rubato piano intro; Three To Get Ready plays more with time (alternating between 6/8 and 4/4); Kathy's Waltz spends the first quarter of its run time in 4/4 and doesn't actually get to actually being a waltz in 3/4 until the first solo. I love the hell out of every second of this album. 5 stars.

Great jazz album, perfect vibe and catchy melodys.

9.5/10. This is like progressive rock. Except it's jazz. I fucking love progressive rock!!!!! :) I'm a sucker for odd time signatures, and this album is an absolute treat to the ears!!!!! :) I need MORE of this in my life!!!!! :)

They don’t call it cool jazz for nothin’ baby

One of the best and most inventive jazz albums of its time. By using uncommon time signatures, like 5/4 or 7/8, Brubeck and co. effectively break the conventions of what should sound like. Most impressively, the compositions never come across as impenetrable "high art" but are instead quite streamlined and accessible. A multi-layered masterpiece. Key tracks: Blue Rondo A La Turk Take Five Three to Get Ready

One of the greatest jazz albums released in the greatest year for jazz. This is one I've enjoyed for a long time, and listening to it again today, it still retains its magic. The cool jazz vibe mixed with unusual time signatures is a thing to behold in the hands of great jazz musicians 5/5

Bloody superb

Absolutely timeless. The way they could build tension and release it was almost cinematic. An easy five stars.

Excellent

Love some Brubeck

Take Five is definitely a masterpiece. The rest of it is really wonderful too. Maybe I like jazz more than I realized? Can't help but want to give this a 5*.

Nice 👌🏼

Amazing

Bangin’

Хорош, не так много такого слушал

One of the most beautiful & brilliant pieces of work, ever!

CLASSIC JAZZ. Excellent! Fell in love with this the first time I heard it.

I was going to give this four stars, but fuck it, Take Five! This was excellent. Our best jazz album on the generator so far, up there with Getz/Gilberto. Listened to it twice in a row. I’d heard Take Five before and it’s such a good track, love it. The whole album is so well recorded and produced, it’s from 1959 but sounds like it released yesterday. And I love the percussion and unusual time signatures. Relaxing but interesting to listen to. Great stuff. I’m not usually a jazz listener but I can’t find a flaw with this. I visited the famous Village Vanguard jazz club in Downtown New York recently and this album makes me want to go back.

Brilliant. Never gets old. Peaceful and energetic at the same time.

Lovely melodies left and right, back to back.

Genial

My first 5 point jazz album. Everybody's Jumpin' was a little sloopy for me by the way a perfect album.

In Ken Burns' JAZZ docuseries there is a segment where Dave Brubeck talks about his rise in jazz and how when he went on his first big tour that took him through the Jim Crow South he reminisced through tears how his bandmates were declined rooms and had to sleep on the bus, how venues wouldn't serve them - all because they were black. His whole approach to equality and civil rights is worth its own read. Dave Brubeck was a humanitarian that made awesome music. Take Five is in the top five if not top two album of all time jazz releases. Its beauty is simple rhythm and harmony. Getting this album on November 6, 2024 was perfect timing. I woke up to the news that the world was probably changing for the worse, so I got up, played this album and went for a pre-dawn walk. Still, Dave Brubeck does his best to remind us, Take Five, it'll get better… eventually. 5/5

Genial

BANGER BANGERS AND MORE BANGERS Love the opening track and it's use by nas in his song the jarreau of rap And Take 5 how could one not like take 5 Big fan of albums that aren't doing to much 7 songs, no fat!

I was first introduced to this album during a Jazz Appreciation class in college (god I miss college). It’s a jazz classic, and honestly just a good time through and through.

classic

clásico de clásicos, hipnótico

No doubter jazz classic

Jazzy af

I think my late teen reaction to this was "blah blah jazz snooze"

Should that not be the most famous jazz album ever?

Really cool jazz album, I’ll be back

Letsgooo well known favorite on this album take five! Great to wake up with.

always love listening to this album - DBQ has really done a great job of bringing jazz into more of the limelight as far as the public image, and the digestibility of their sound mixed with stellar musicianship and complementary relationships between the instruments is highlighted in the album.

Exceptional. Really had to Take Five after it was over to soak it in.

Fantastic beautiful album. Excellent remastering on Qobuz

While I think this album is usually wildly overrated in the jazz canon, that's only because people love it SO much. This album is still cool, stylish and sleak, allowing for a more invested listen or to put this on in the background while you do other things or pretend you're classy. My ramblings aside, Blue Rondo a la Turk is one of the best jazz performances ever and that first drop into 4/4 is one of my favourite tone-setters ever to kick off an album. Just classic stuff.

Eksperimantalan i pomalo kontroverzan u svoje vrijeme zbog neobicnih mjera, a s druge strane, sofisticiran i pitak. Volim ovakav jazz, nenametljiv je a opet ga (dovoljno) pozorno mogu slusati bez da mi uzima sav fokus. Nemam vise sto puno nadodati, osim Brubeckov sljedeci album na plejlistu odmah nakon ovoga.

I love this album. It's one of my go to jazz albums. I have distinct memories of my high school music teacher Mr. Leach playing bits of this album on his piano when he was waiting for us to get ready. Mr. Leach was the best!!! I'm usually good at figuring out time signatures, but Blue Rondo À La Turk still messes me up! Liked Songs Added: Blue Rondo À La Turk Take Five

"Take Five" gets all the headlines, but "Blue Rondo a la Turk" and "Pick up Sticks" are among the all-time great album bookend pairs.
