Another 7/10 listen. It's a good album without having anything that really wowed me. I recognized some songs from before.
Tom Petty has the most punchable face in rock.
Not his best, but still sets the stage for many good albums to come.

Breakdown sounds like a guitar guy video. you're all trying to look up what the Cataract Collective Emulsifier actually does and somebody plays that blues riff in the intro. Fooled Again (I Don't Like It) is a very funny song title. American Girl is very good, what a great guitar thing to do.
I’m less charmed by Americana than I once was, but the Heartbreakers gotta be one of the great American bands right? I think some of the later ones are a bit better than this but I have to inflate it to represent them as a whole. Ludicrous there’s only one in this list, when so many lesser bands have multiple.
It is a good album, but it suffers from paling in comparison to the ones that he as a soloist or with his band would later release. Still a fine record and nice to listen to.
Picking this as the solo Tom Petty album when half of his discog clears it is certainly a choice. A glorified demo tape with American Girl towering over everything else. It's like putting only one Radiohead album on the list and it's Pablo Honey. There's some nice guitar on this, but most of the songs are unremarkable. It's hard to make a 30 minute album drag, but this one does. Rating: 4/10
I love Tom Petty. I love the upbeat, almost punky vibe this album has. Makes me happy!
I knew of Tom Petty but never listened to a whole album. I found this odd to listen to - guitars plucked lightly, low in the mix - drums and vocals prominent - lead vocal voice not attractive. I was interested by Breakdown - my listening companion commented that she knew the song but couldn't tell if Petty was doing a cover or had been covered - I had to do a search to recall Grace Jones' version, which I still really like - is Petty a gifted songwriter but I just couldn't grasp the brilliance of the songs through the disappointment of the vocals and the strangely-empty mixes? Whatever the reason, this album was low impact for me. I give it some credit for simplicity of the songs, and for including Breakdown - I didn't hear anything bad, and at least some of it is good, so I'll say it's Okay, 6/10.
All Tom Petty is great - but this sounds like it would be his first album. Mystery Man was a new treat. 3.5/5
There's some fun stuff on this one and it's cool to hear where they started, but their are much better Tom Petty albums that deserve inclusion on the list more. Damn the Torpedos, Full Moon Fever, and Wildflowers are all "better and more interesting" albums and I think the list could spare one more spot for Tom Petty.

Luna, Breakdown, and American Girl are standouts -overall a pretty standard album outside of those.
Listening to Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers for my 1,000 albums project was an interesting experience. I loved the high energy early on, with "Rockin' Around (With You)" bringing a really cheerful mood, "Anything That's Rock 'n' Roll" turning out to be a major highlight, and "The Wild One, Forever" delivering that big, emotional, sad-guy ballad style. Unfortunately, the middle stretch dropped off for me—"Breakdown" felt full of passion but didn't resonate, while tracks like "Strangered in the Night," "Fooled Again," and "Luna" got kind of dull and samey. Even the famous closer, "American Girl," was just decent to my ears, making this a record with a few fun tracks that ultimately failed to hold my attention.
Wonderful. American Girl is an all-timer, and many of the deep cuts here have real soul and playfulness. 4.5 stars, but couldn't get all the way to 5 because it felt a bit slight at times. Hope to come back to this.
It isn't the beast album of Tom petty
This album was a sweet one. I believe this does well as an example of the rock and roll lifestyle. You know, the imagery of the relentless touring, album every year, the pain of banging your head trying to put words onto a page, and expressions of heartbreak and love. For some reason I feel this album has a kinship of sorts with Boston's self-titled album, I suppose because it's very anthemic and released same year. I enjoyed this a lot more than I realised I was going to. Definitely not 4 star territory, but it's a strong, solid, firm 3. Highlight Song/s: "Hometown Blues" and "Anything That's Rock 'n' Roll"
Straightforward 70s rock. It wasn't particularly good or bad but I did enjoy it. It's impressive how little of Tom's vocals I could understand given how high they are in the mix. I didn't recognize any of the songs on the album but American Girl was the highlight.
I kept thinking about how I’m reminded of Carrie Brownstein’s vocal performances in Sleater Kinney as I listened to Tom Petty’s singing.

I haven't heard this band or even of this band in 30+ years. Why did they disappear? Possibly because it's unmemorable music. Not quite anything. A band for people who prefer something else, but don't mind listening to this.
Adding a whole extra star because 'American Girl' really is one of the Great Songs. Otherwise this is a mostly fine and forgettable set of tracks. But good god, what a closer! To me this song almost reaches the clear and direct simplicity of something like "Johnny B. Goode" in its anthemic qualities. It gets my hearg racing every time.

i have a soft spot for tom petty - he is the flip side of the 70s southern rock sound, more bar band than honkey tonk. you know exactly what you'll get with the heartbreakers, both on this album and future ones; you'll get a soaring guitar every once in a while, you'll get a hammond organ, you'll get tom petty's inexplicably acceptable mush mouth vocals. most of the time it works for me. i'd sit and listen to this album again, it's only 30 minutes long, but i don't think i'll add it to my music library. i did add "breakdown" and "american girl" to my library in a predictable fashion, and went and added other songs from other albums to my playlist because i see he never shows up again in the list. 4/5 from me
This was a Tom Petty album..yup. 35 mins of non offensive rock.
Breakdown and American girl are on my all time favorites playlists. This was a huge part of my childhood. I did not love the whole album, but with fresh ears, there are new songs that will go on playlists.
It's pretty absurd that there is only one Tom Petty album on this list. Even more absurd that this one is not even in his top 3. Regardless, there's plenty to like here. "Breakdown" and "American Girl" are the best-known songs for a reason the latter being one of the best in the classic rock pantheon. "Hometown Blues" has the Johnny Rivers-esque swing reminiscent of "Mountain of Love" and "Mystery Man" with its Southern rock groove is one of Petty's most underappreciated songs. The remaining tracks are all...fine. "Strangered in the Night" is one of Tom Petty's most questionable songs lyrically - not really sure what is supposed to be going on there. A better than decent album and should have stepped aside for so much else in his catalogue but there seems to be an affinity for debut albums on this list.

This was fine - short album of quite enjoyable 70s rock songs. But nothing in particular stood out as either amazing or terrible. 3 stars.
This album is overshadowed by its younger brothers, but still has some great moments of its own.
American Girl's hard-carrying the rest of this album

So I read that this is somehow the ONLY Tom Petty album on this damn list. I love this record, but Damn the Torpedoes, Hard Promises, Long After Dark, Full Moon Fever, and Wildflowers deserve better. Not to mention I like some of his other lesser known albums better than this one. That being said, TP is one of my favorite artists so, while I think this album is more of a 4/5 (Luna, Rockin’, and Strangered are not necessarily faves of mine), I’m giving him a 5 since this is the only album on here. American Girl, Breakdown, Hometown Blues, Mystery Man (doing his best Van Morrison impression), Wild One, Anything that’s Rock n Roll, and Fooled Again are all amazing.

Pretty good, but sort of basic rock/americana and I'm not a huge fan of Tom Petty's voice colour delivery. He has like a weird twang on his vocals.

To a contemporary listener, this album may seem unoriginal, but I can see why it was perceived as fresh in the mid-70s, and how this sound has influenced US rock music since then. Too gringo for my taste tho so that's a 3/5
It's def classic rock Tom Petty type shit. Almost weird this was "new" at some point in history. Most of it's pretty boring TO ME but I understand how others like it. The Wild One, Forever and Fooled Again are pretty good. American Girl is a Strokes song.

Utterly forgettable. Pedestrian, bland. Not just not a great album, but also an album with remarkably few great songs. The only track that aroused any interest was Luna (and whatever interest that might have been had dissipated by the time I went back to hear it again afterwards). Tom Pettys debut. It sounds like he is still looking for his sound that made him hugely successful later on. There are hints of the soft folk Americana rock that is to come. It was not an unpleasant album to listen to, but ir’s not particularly memorable.
Tom Petty is an American classic. He writes straight forward rock and roll songs with memorable hooks and this debut album launched his career with two big hits that established his sound right from the start. Some of the songs are fairly generic compared to his classics but even the simpler songs are enjoyable. This isn’t his best album but it’s a great introduction to one of America’s best rock songwriters.
Another timeless artist that deserves to be represented on this project. A couple of rock & roll classics in Breakdown and American Girl and the rest of the tunes are Tom Petty through and through. A very good listen.
The hits are hits and the rest is good enough to let him record a second album. He obviously gets better over time and the music gets much better. This is fine if fairly common in feel overall.
Some bands come out of the gate on fire, Their best work displayed on their debut album. Tom Petty's debut is really good, few classic bangers with some good enough songs to fill out the rest of the album. He comes out hot, not on fire, but Tom Petty gained momentum with each album, putting out better and better music as he evolved over time. Having his debut album represent him on this list is like judging Peyton Manning on his first couple seasons, really good with mixed results. You need to look at the entire career, or at the very least what was produced at their peak. There are infinitely better Tom Petty albums that should have been included on this list. I was upset about Billy Joel only having one album on the list but at least his was a banger album. This is an absolute injustice to Tom Petty. Only one album on the list and it's one of his weakest. Shameful. The album on it's own is a 3. But i'm giving it a 4 because it's Tom Fing Petty.

Razen v okviru Traveling Wilburys, Pettyja dejansko še nism poslušala. In I guess bo to kinda to za moj exploration Pettyja. Zj sm na sredini albuma nekje ("Strangered in the Night") in loh bi poslušala sam en komad in dobila iz tega esenco albuma. Ok, dejansko zj druga polovica albuma je mal bolj varied. "Fooled Again (I Don't Like It)" in "Mystery Man" sta mi bolj zanimiva. Ugh, mal mi ma tud nadležen vokal. Nasal.
I liked it… it just felt very repetitive like none of the tracks particuarly stood out to me, its definitely a feel good album and you can definitely hear that its approaching 80s as there are some very subtle hints of 80s pop.
A promising, if thin, debut for Tom Petty. Breakdown and American Girl are obvious standouts among what isn't really enough material for a truly good album.

this is a very fun classic rock and roll album, definitely one of the better classic albums i've been given by this generator. there's not an immense amount of depth in it, but it rocks hard.
There's some hits here but besides maybe three songs this thing is a bore, still thought shoe songs are quite good

Tom Petty is more of a miss than a hit for me generally. This album wasn't terrible but didn't grab me at all. The only song I think I knew going on was "American Girl" and that was definitely the standout for me here.

I can see why he was a big deal!
I know Breakdown and American Girl, but have never heard the other songs on this album. They are good in a generic 1976 kind of way. But are shockingly short. I barely have time to register that a new song has started and it is over. Looking at the times, they aren't all that much shorter than any other pop song, but they seem to be over more quickly than I expect. Maybe that's a good thing?

My first exposure to Tom Petty was on a grainy Jonas Brothers livestream in the year of our lord 2009 (the internet used to be fun!). Joe was wearing a terrible purple beanie and they did a half-baked cover of Free Fallin’. It made me swoon (and even at the time I remember feeling that it was covertly/overtly part of the purity/new-agey Christian thing they had mostly grown out of but not quite, for the “loves Jesus and America too line”). I saw John Mayer at the WIN Entertainment Centre like six months later and he also covered Free Fallin’ and it was truly like wow everyone but me knows this song. I feel like “American Girl” must’ve been in the aforementioned music round at Miss Peaches, because of the two Tom Petty songs I am actively conscious of it is my favourite and one I listen to semi-regularly. It was a wonderful way to end this album, which, on the whole, I really enjoyed!
I thought Breakdown and American Girl were pretty great and the rest of the album was not a bad time! maybe interested in hearing more from him

I think American Girl is a truly excellent pop song—the droning guitar part, the melodic bass, the baking vocals, and the iconic chorus. And while the rest of the album never achieves the same heights, it's a great debut from a great band. It surprised me, actually, that their first album came out in 1976! Seems like they should have been around before that.

General thoughts: A bit plain country-esque rock & roll, basic chord progressions and lyrics. Before this, I had the impression Tom Petty was kinda boring, and this is kind of on track. It's not a bad album, but pretty casual, inconsequential. The opener and closer are nice, especially the double guitars on American Girl; I got cockblocked by the fadeout though, which, btw is used on 8 out of 10 songs in the album. Kudos to Luna and Mistery Man as the ones that don't, also they had a different ambiance, which I liked more overall. Outstanding song(s): American Girl Rockin’ Around (With You) Weakest song(s): Hometown Blues Cover: Good looking and aged well. Also liked his logo. The cover is kinda generic, but it's well made. Real rating: 3.3

Fun, straightforward, commercial rock songs that manage to stay the right side of cheesy. His voice sounds a bit like Mr Burns though, and I hate the album cover.
I haven't really listened to Tom Petty much outside of the occasional single here and there (or his contributions as part of the Traveling Wilburys) but I really enjoyed this. Will definitely be entering frequent playlist rotation for me.

This debut album from the most all-American band of all time certainly shows some promise, but it's too rough around the edges to recommend outside of the big hits "Breakdown" and "American Girl." Nothing else stands out besides those 2 songs, and the very first-draft songwriting makes this apparent major label come across as a small-town high school band making a record with their pocket money. Most of the non-hits sound like they came out of some coming-of-age family movie from the late 70s or early 80s. I guess this is well and truly the "heartland rock" sound played to a T. Petty himself also doesn't seem to have found his voice yet - here, he sounds like Gregg Allman getting over a cold. I find that his songwriting style works best when there's a tension or energy just under the surface, and that's something that's largely absent on this paint-by-numbers release. Except for that last song, "American Girl," basically everything here is played as plainly and paint-by-numbers as possible. Not sure if something so uninventive is really so must-listen. Naw, not for me. It's an okay album but pretty basic rock. I'm torn between 2 or 3 stars but there are some pretty throw away songs that bump it down quite a bit for me.
This is an amazing, solid rock and roll album. My only complaint would be it’s only 31 minutes. But every track is great.

I've always been meaning to give Tom Petty's albums a listen as I really like the songs I've heard from him and the Heartbreakers; so this finally gave me my chance. And I must say, it was a really fun listen. Full of cool guitars with that classic bluesy rock vibe. A good time overall. Fav Songs American Girl Breakdown The Wild One, Forever Is it Top 1001 Worthy (is it essential)? Yesss. While you're not gonna find anything truly earthshattering in a Tom Petty album, what you will find is so damn good rock that is consistent throughout. No real duds, a great album.
Favorites: Breakdown, The Wild One, Forever, Mystery Man, Luna, and the obvious American Girl. This is a really fun album. And so good! There is almost a sensual quality to Tom’s voice (RIP 😭) that makes some of the songs so so so enjoyable to listen to. Loved it so much. I’m on the border of giving it a 4 or a 5. I may come back, listen to it again, and might decide to give it a 5. But for now it is a very strong 4.5.
Vintage sounding tones. Somewhat simple drums. Decent songwriting. Tom’s voice is great. I’m just noticing all the country influence on some of the guitar parts. The hits on this thing are timeless, but the other tracks kind of limits the magic overall. 3.4/5.0

Tom Petty never struck me as album oriented and that’s definitely true of the this album. It’s a collection of songs and that seems about it. The songs are really good, and 2 of them are bona fide classics.

With his inspired mixture of John Lennon, Van Morrison, and Lynyrd Skynyrd, TP is The King of classic rock radio singles. Who cares about the albums. Another case where Curator should let the fans pick their fave, which is probably not this one.
This will be interesting. Really only know Tom Petty from his hits. Never listened to this full album. Early on, and it’s just a good rock sound. Breakdown is one of those timeless 70s classic rock songs. It almost feels too generic at times but it’s a fun listen. It’s all just fine. I do enjoy it. Don’t think it excels much beyond just good rock and roll. But that could be fine. The stand out is surely American Girl. It’s crazy that’s it’s a closer, this is a perfect album opener. But guess it’s the idea you leave them wanting more. It didn’t pique my interest much in the middle. But it’s all a fun listen. Classic 3/4. Deciding if I’ll go up or down.

Hmm. It's alright and it admitedly has a great single in American Girl to end the album. But frankly? A bit generic as far as classic rock albums go. Nothing super stand out except for Tom Petty's singing which is admittedly fun.

Very classic sound. I like the variety that it has with the types of songs but doesn’t stray from that 70s feel. Overall pretty good, nothing too fancy.
They'd worked on these songs for quite some time, so they were bound to be good. And there are some GREAT songs on here such as "Breakdown" and "American Girl" that are the building blocks of their entire career. There are certainly shades of what was to come. But, it's also that old adage, "you have a lifetime to make your debut album but only six months to write your next one" (or however that quote goes..). This is a really good debut and a fun record to listen to every time.
Some duds in the middle but overall a very enjoyable and creative album!

A surprisingly uneventful collection of 70s jams. American Girl slaps though, and kinda stands the album up on its own.
short and sweet. classy and cool. i really don't know why i haven't heard a single one of these songs before (except maybe American Girl?), they have the sound of essential 70's-80's listening. there are a couple of skips but mostly consistently quality. favorite song is Rockin' Around (With You) or Breakdown. solid 4
Rating: 6/10 It's 70's American pop rock to a tee. Certainly not bad, also not nearly my choice of thing to listen to. Doesn't overstay its welcome and there's not really any songs I dislike, just a bunch of average ones I'm mostly indifferent about. American Girl really is a classic though

Somewhat boring - Break Down and American Girl are both good songs, but I feel like most of the rest of the album is unremarkable. Didn't dislike it but don't think there's a lot to recommend it beyond two tracks that are going to be on every Tom Petty greatest hits compilation.
A couple of classics on here and a fair amount of non-essential filler tracks. I’ve never been a huge Tom Petty fan but I’m looking forward to checking out some stuff from later in his discography.

Good album but can you imagine how much better it would be if it was called “Tom Petty and The Fart Rippers?”
The face he's making on the album cover makes me want to beat him up. He looks like he has a secret and he's telling me to guess. I don't think I get Tom Petty's deal half the time he sounds like Elvis half the time he sounds like George Harrison and half the time he sounds like he just doesn't know how to enunciate so he's singing the whole song with his mouth open. Most of the songs are just some rockabilly bullshit while they tune their guitars and then suddenly American Girl the perfect song comes on and you're like OOOOOH SHIIITTTTT. Had no idea it was this early I thought it was from his comeback - just every note is perfect.
It's Tom Petty, and there are some great tunes on in here. There are also some that never made the radio for good reason. Cheers.

Woefully meh. This is rock, but Petty's voice is more like gravel - it's insanely irritating. Just so whatever, so blah blah blah, and not in the slightest worthy of inclusion.

So I’m listening to this album and I know the big hits and the rest of the album seems adequate. It’s a debut. It’s seems a bit of a mess because the singer is trying to find a consistent voice. Several songs the voice seems so random as if another person is singing and maybe they are. I’m not going to research because I don’t care that much. People complain that this is the only album by him on the list. Sure but at least it’s being heard. The others are probably more popular and have been heard. But who cares. It’s not my list and I’m just doing this for fun to listen to music I might not know.

Very few embodied the American heartland rock sound like Tom Petty. His slacker and nasal delivery puts you right in the middle of small town USA. Great debut album.

Technically this album is not bad, but it doesn't feel original to me Listening to this feels like walking into a bar and saying "One alcohol, please!" I wouldn't listen to it by choice, but if it randomly played somewhere in a restaurant I wouldn't be mad
Debut album from a band that went on to be huge. Great songwriting from Tom. Some great singles here that went on to be Petty Classics, 'Breakdown', 'Anything That's Rock 'n' Roll' and 'American Girl'.
I’m not the biggest fan of Tom Petty’s voice but his music feels great at this time of the year when the sun is out and the weather is great.

Pretty classic album of rock, tho the lyrics and the music overall are probably easily forgettable, it still has that rock sound and instrumental that is cool. And for a debut album it’s what you expect

I was prepared to hate this, as yet more Country/Blues/Rock Made By Hairy White Men In The Seventies. But it had a bit more to it. A wistfulness, nice Beatlesy harmonies, themes of working class life rather than just being about sleeping with underage girls. I can see the similarities with Bruce Springsteen, and I enjoyed learning the term 'heartland rock'.
Now, you see, this is the kind of music I believe would have been appropriate for the 4th of July. However, I got it on the 6th of July instead... That's life, I guess. This album is a good first effort, but lacks most of the songwriting that Petty's best work has. Most of the songs are pretty mediocre, with mediocre lyrics and mediocre hooks. Petty's vocals are surprisingly Elvis Costello-esque in nature on this record, considering how they sound on his later and better work. I am slightly baffled by this album's inclusion, especially with Full Moon Fever and Damn the Torpedoes being altogether more acclaimed and popular yet absent from this list. But this list has many baffling inclusions, and this album is only the latest one of my project so far. This album is ranked #7 of 18 albums for 1976. File this one in the "debut records that sound like a debut record" folder. Songs are rough around the edges and don't hit for me as some other songs in his later records do. The advantage we have is that we know what Tom Petty would become and I can hear glimpses of that in the songs. "American Girl" is still a bop after all this time and I would argue is one of the best rock songs ever written (don't know where it would lie on a list but it should be on that list). However, it does stick out as a glowing beacon in a sea of mediocrity. 2.5 rounded down to a 2/5
It's aight. I liked the bluesy parts, but the rest was forgetable.
A pretty fun album, didn't expect much with that album cover bu was pleasantly surprised. Was it the best album on this list? No. But it was also far from the worst. The Singer's voice does get a little grating after a few songs, but because the album is that short it didn't really bother me.
I have started to come round on Tom Petty. Some of his early records are just great classic rock. And while each has high high and low lows, this one came in just above mid-level. American Girl + Breakdown are awesome.
Petty and his band are endearing on this debut, even if they’re still coming into their own. “Breakdown” is probably my favorite here, but of course “American Girl” is undeniable too.

Fairly standard rock album. Not my favorite.
Kind of a blah debut. Echoes of Beatles, Springsteen and Van Morrison. American Girl is good, Breakdown is good and sleazy. I wish I could rate it higher.
There are signs of the songwriter Tom Petty would become on this album, but the majority of it is a pretty typical 70s rock album. The title track is of course incredible, not just the best on the album but one of the best of his career. Petty's vocals fit the longing of the song perfectly, and the almost jangly guitar is a real treat. "Breakdown" is also excellent, and "The Wild One, Forever" stands out as a track that has the easy hooks of his career highlights. Elsewhere though, the opener and "Anything That's Rock n Roll" are generic songs about rocking, Petty's best songs were more nuanced despite having the same sentiments. "Luna" is too slow, and several other songs just don't sound like Petty songs. At only half an hour this is a pleasant listen, but his best came later in his career.

Review: This was a very good album. There was only one miss in my opinion so the consistency was amazing. The best elements were for sure the guitar and background instruments. I am not as high on Tom Petty’s vocals as some people are but I still think they are decent. My favorite song was easily American Girl. The up tempo feel works so well for this band and I loved everything about that song. I can see this album also having amazing replay value in the future but I guess we will have to see how well it ages in the playlist.
I’ve loved Tom Petty’s music for decades, and you can hear the early blueprint of what he’d become on the Heartbreakers’ debut. Hearing it for the first time, I found myself both enjoying it and feeling strangely detached from it. The radio staples still shine, but the work that resonates most with me comes later, once Petty and the band settle into their 1980s stride.
I've never actually listened to a Tom Petty album all the way through until now. This is a decent debut. The well known radio hits shine here, but the rest is just average and doesn't pop for me.
American Girl carries the album pretty hard. The rest of it is fine 70s rock, though it is a little boring. That last song is damn good though. Boring for the most part, but it’s pretty short, so that’s not a huge deal. Definitely wouldn’t put this in a list of 1089 albums you need to hear before you die if it were me making the list.

I get why people dont love Tom Petty, but I dont get some of the recent hate....its just good, straightforward rock and roll. The fact that he debuted with "Breakdown" and "American Girl" is impressive, and this album has lots of other catchy, 3 minute, jangly guitar songs with a good backing band, which is right up my alley. "Mystery Man" is a cool one I was unfamiliar with, feels like hes trying to do a Van Morrison thing with that. Overall, great first album that establishes what Petty would make a career out of.

This is quite boring, i've never understood why Tom Petty breaks so many hearts. If we're here because of American Girl, let's listen to the song and move along, why waste time with the album.
I'm sure at the moment it was pushing boundaries. Yeah, there's a few instances where musically it's ahead of its time. It's worth noting. But an entire album's worth of this bland country-boy rock just falls flat to me. I attempted various listens, and I can't bring myself to enjoy it. At best I can forget it's on while it plays in the background. 2.3/5
i like tom petty. this has two hits, or at least songs that people would know - "breakdown" and "american girl". but it definitely feels like a debut otherwise. glimmers of what would come, but otherwise not fully formed. looking ahead it's very surprising that this is on the list and not "wildflowers". that album is better across the board. i don’t know anyone that would say this is tom’s best.

Pretty solid album with some iconic songs. Probably a 3.5/5 but I’ll round up because of tom petty.
Look, I know I complained about the Led Zeppelin album being too long, but this is just too short.The first song actually intrigued me, but then it built up to nothing. Then, about 3 songs in, I just started getting extremely sick of his voice and accent, it's super annoying. The guitars do moderately interesting stuff occasionally but overall if that's what you're looking for, go to another band... His voice is so annoying it makes it impossible for any of the songs to be catchy, and there's nothing else interesting about it. Even the strokes are better than this.
This one didn't move me much when it came out, still doesn't today. I think Petty's a better songwriter than he is a singer.

There were moments here that were ok, but the majority of it was fairly trite. I’d forgotten how much the start of ‘American Girl’ sounds like the strokes before it descended into stock MOR rock fare. Nothing much here to pique the interest.

Such an easy album to listen to. Really did enjoy this. Definitely need to listen to more Tom Petty with and without his heartbreakers.
Maybe some might see this as blasphemy but there is some rock from this era that feels so generic I can't distinguish one band from the other. This is one of those albums.
Tom Petty is a musician whose music I have never sought out because I didn’t have to. He was already an institution of US radio by the time I was a teenager, and now it’s practically the law that classic rock stations have to play him at least twice a day. He’s good. I like his music. But because it’s so oversaturated I can only be indifferent.
'Breakdown' is great, 'American Girl' is all-time-great single, but as an album (especially in comparison to Full Moon Fever or even Wildflowers) it's not consistently that great. I've forgotten most of the songs, and mostly remember the album as a solid debut for a band that was just finding its sound. 3/5
I of course know the hits but had never listened to this album in full before. I was surprised to see it came out in 1976. I bought a Petty biography on sale a couple of years ago and I guess I need to finally get around to reading it. This sounds about how I would have expected it to sound, which is to say I like it but can understand why I had never heard the "non-hit" songs before.
When the cover popped up, I knew immediately it wasn't for me. I was right, I didn't dig it, even tho I don't think is necessarily garbage or somethin like that. Maybe I'll give it a second listen sometime in the future.

I've been gradually losing interest in classic rock as I've gotten older, at least with the stuff I'm not very familiar with. I knew a couple songs from this but I didn't think I would be that interested. I thought it was great though, I like Tom Petty's voice Highlights: Breakdown

Welcome to yet another addition of right band, wrong album. Sure, we have some hits here, and we definitely hear what the band was capable of and likely going to become. But at the end of the day, we have their first hits and a bunch of filler. I've been Fooled Again by this list. I wish it wouldn't Do Me Like That. I also understand that this is the only Heatbreakers album on the list, so it's All or Nothin' with this rating.

This is probably the most egregious case on this list of favouring early albums over artist's later work. This is a reasonable debut album but if you are going to pick one Petty album, why wouldn't you go Damm the Torpedos or Full Moon Fever. There's a bit of borrowing from Dylan, Warren Zevon and Van Morrison here but apart from American Girl and Breakdown it doesn't add up to anything very memorable.
Pretty good but bug standard classis rock. It's good, not that long and does what it sets out to do. Some fun bops here and there but not an all too consequential listen. Bit of an odd inclusion to pick from his entire catalogue, but it's good to see Tom Petty represented.

It's a decent album, but Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers have made many better albums - Damn The Torpedoes and Into The Great Wild Open, for two, and of his solo albums (with heavy involvement from the Heartbreakers) Wildflowers and Full Moon Fever are much better than this. so - 2 stars, for the timeless American Girl
