Reviews (page 2 of 12)
Come on now.
Very good
This is so good. The list is providing. Breakdown is a top top top tier song. And yea yea American girl is amazing too. Luna is the only thing on here I don’t love. But god damn do I love breakdown. Breakdown might be a top 100 songs ever written for me.
Yes yes yes, wonderful and great music, mega!!!
tom pettys music is awesome. no notes
Rating: 4.2/5 Short Review: Imagine Bruce Springsteen’s kid brother ran away to California and formed a bar band that accidentally changed your life. Favorite Track: “Breakdown” – it slinks, it stalks, and it sighs. Petty turns vulnerability into a weapon.
Hell of an album. Every song is great. Love TP.
Awesome
First album by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. One of the better debut albums to ever come out. Every song has merit, no filler. "Breakdown" one of the best rock n' roll songs ever done.
This was a good listen
More easy feeling rock-n-roll tracks than I ever would have expected from Tom Petty. Feels incredibly American youth circa 70s, makes me nostalgic for an idealized time that never existed. Two true classics in here. Fooled Again (I Don't Like It) is maybe the whiniest song I've ever heard from the pre-pop-punk era.
First Tom Petty album I’ve ever heard, awesome album! Mystery Man is my favorite but zero misses
Brilliant
Debut Byrds
Beginn einer großen Karriere. Tom fehlt!
Soundtrack of my youth
classic
4.5/5
Great music of days gone by!
- For so many other bands, this would be a 5 star debut that they would roundly pleased to have produced. For this group it's nowhere near their best which makes it so difficult to rate. Even the songs that weren't hits are pretty damn solid and there are a few that could have been hits ..... Once again context matters. I'm going give it a 5 just for "Breakdown", "Strangered In the Night" and "Rockin' Around (with You)" - - Also, according to many others on this project, this is the only Tom Petty release on this list .... WTF? They had at least 3 better releases after this one. Considering some of the absolute DRECK that IS included, that's an absolute travesty. -
For me their first album was a hit machine. The music was so tight and the lyrics were not what you’d expect from a first time album. Saw them in 77 and couldn’t believe how good they were
Legend. Period.
A very good album.
I'm still looking for a bad Tom Petty Song. I'm afraid I couldn't finde one on this album... PLUS: The Album ends on a very nice reminder to Scrubs :^)
Great debut album. Petty was great.
Gehört im Zug mit Neigetechnik von Nürnberg nach Hof
Cool
Me un disco increíble. Lo escuché mientras hacía la cena y me hizo sentir una muy buena vibración.
Mix some Bryds jangle, southern boogie, Rolling Stones and power pop and you get this great album. At the time he was probably overshadowed by the rise of early punk, but it has outlasted most of that.
Really good and put me onto Tom Petty in general
Toevallig laatst nog geluisterd. Tom Petty is onaantastbaar.
👍🏻
A rock standard. Especially with "American Girl"
Tom Petty is one of those artists whose music has stood the test of time and aged incredibly well. Rooted deeply in rock traditions, he’s hands down the best artist within the heartland rock genre. His music is evenly balanced and fits perfectly with just about any mood and any time.
Really cool instrumentation! Reminds me of the doors and other 60s blues rock. Good energy good vibes, lots of cool sounds. I like Tom's voice he kinda sounds like bob dylan In a way. My first time listening to Tom petty on purpose, glad I checked him out. Great guitar work and cool note choices/sonic textures.
Smack dap in the middle of the disco/Elton John era comes a back to basics roll and roll record. Springsteen, Tom Petty and others revitalized roots rock, looked disco in the face and said f’off. It’s a fantastic record but what it signified to me was the struggle of that era in keeping classic rock and roll alive.
why do all of the top reviews say this is forgettable this is iconic
Just completely great
Had heard some Tom Petty songs. I had no clue they sounded so different to all the rock that was coming out in the 70s. Definitely a must listen.
One of the best debut albums!!
Cor - this went by in a flash. A year or so after this album came out we found it cheap in either a car boot sale or jumble sale. Someone had lovingly stuck articles in the gatefold and it seemed to make it a bit more special. This seemed so accomplished for a debut album and got played a lot in our house. Singing along to American Girl at top volume with the folks is a joyful memory. I would rather have this on repeat than a lot of so-called iconic albums and even though a couple of the songs are a bit filler-y, if this is Tom Petty‘s only album on here, then he deserves top marks.
Oh man do I love Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers but I wouldn't say this is the best selection to represent an album of theirs to listen to before you die. That would be Damn The Torpedoes. But when American Girl hits you definitely want more than the 30 minutes they gave us. A great foreshadow of what's to come. And this is Tom Petty and indeed I want to hear his work over and over before I die. Hence, 5+ (I'm still so sad about how he died. Andre wrote a great piece about Petty's death: https://blog.discmakers.com/2017/04/musicians-who-died-in-2017/)
Can't go wrong with Tom Petty. Fantastic album
Holds up great
Wow. I'd only heard the two singles prior to listening today. I like Full Moon Fever, Damn the Torpedoes and Wildflower more as Petty is singing like himself and not alternating between Vam Morrison and Mick Jagger but this is still a great album because of "Breakdown" and "American Girl." 3.5/5
Good ol' Rock and Roll. As simple as can get, but still a hell of a good time. 4.5 bumped up to 5.
Excellent. Tom!
Breakin’ it down
Great album, I love Tom Petty, and will keep coming back.
One of my favorite all time albums.
GREAT album. Maybe a perfect one. When it rocks it REALLY rocks. Even when it slows down and introduces a country twang it's still great. Love Petty's whole career, but this debut is probably the greatest.
What a great debut album. Any album with Breakdown and American Girl is going to be tops for me. The rest was still solid, if not hits.
Amazing, great find
Genial, me encantó.
Unexpected big like
After listening to this short but sweet debut album it is easy to see how this group had a long successful career
Wonderful stuff here, gets a bit safe at times but still tremendous
TPATH's debut, huh? What can I say? 30 minutes of top-notch rock n roll. Very good for a debut. I'm definitely not the best person to review an album that goes well with road trips and motorcycles. For me, it's just 5 stars, automatically! Bonus: I became very happy with the new wave of fans that Tom has been gaining since "Love is a Long Road" was used in the GTA VI trailer, precisely because I also became a Tom Petty fan thanks to a GTA game, in this case, San Andreas, with the song "Runnin' Down a Dream"! LONG LIVE TOM PETTY! You'll never gonna be forgotten!
Great album
Despite hearing his music from the time he started, I didn't become a Tom Petty fan until decades after his debut. I was missing out because I think that he and the Heartbreakers are one of the greatest American bands of all time! This was an excellent debut with multiple great songs right off the bat. They were strong signs of the greatness yet to come. 4.5/5
5/5 great album
Good
Awesome debut
What's not to like about Tom Petty
топ
Whst it is album. Great album. Starter band full of promise. Charismatic front man. Solid backing band.
Hell yes Tom Petty is atop Rock Royalty. Effortlessly poured out important music his entire life.
Gainsvillian legends!
Tom Petty looks kind of like my mom circa 1983, but my mom never put out a banger like this.
I’ve been waiting for good ol’ Tom to pop up! Love it. Such a perfect album.
Very good debut album. Third album “Damn the Torpedoes” was my intro & cemented Petty and the Heartbreakers as one of the favorites in my pantheon. Then I got to go back to this & the 2nd album to discover what I had been missing. This album had the sounds of a band that was going all the way.
The beginning of a masterclass in Rock & Roll. The first line of 'American Girl' defines the U.S.A.
6-10 один трек додав в плейлист
2 good songs. The rest..... not great.
Good stuff. 'Anything that's rock and roll' has been in my top five since 1978, and shows no sign of slipping. 'American girl' is up there too. Never played the whole album before, and it's all pretty good - it probably only deserves 4 stars, but the rest of this list has been so poor, it's easily 5 stars by comparison.
Brutal
Fab
Tp does it like no other and a lot of good ones on here.
classic rock! a lot of songs I’ve heard before so I can now put a name to the songs. very nostalgic
Can’t believe I’ve never heard this.
The only album of his?!!!!
Great
Perfect!
As he will forever be remembered as a Classic-Dad-Rock god, Tom Petty doesn't get enough credit for being a fresh sound in his early years. Incorporating some New Wave flourishes to the tried-and-true Southern Blues Rock formula, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers were ahead of the curve on a sound that wouldn't fully bloom until the 1980's. He delivered the cheeky sneer of Punk Rock from the North to the swamps of Florida. Add a some New-Wavey hand claps, Poppy vocal accents from the band, and shimmering, heavily chorused guitar licks, and there ya go.
Really admire this first record by TP and the H’s. The 60’s were only a few years in the rearview but seemed light years away, when he channeled them in combination with punk / new wave energy as well or better than anybody in this era.
Tom Petty is one of those artists whose music has stood the test of time and aged incredibly well. Rooted deeply in rock traditions, he’s hands down the best artist within the heartland rock genre. His music is evenly balanced and fits perfectly with just about any mood and any time.
Had the distinct pleasure of seeing Tom Petty live at the original Pemberton Music Festival in 2008 and he was absolutely phenomenal. This album is such a raw, beautiful example of one of the greatest songwriters of all time balanced beautifully by the heartbreakers backing him up. Can't like this one enough.
Just bangers. Straight kooky bangers. Early TP is inspiring.
Obviously one of the greatest albums of all time.
Excellent! Has left me wondering why I've never listened to Tom Petty before!
Amazing band, album, and songs!
banger after banger
Pleasantly surprised. Only knew one song. This would be great record if you are chilling outside by a fireplace. Good album.
Love Tom Petty. Just a great talent and a group that I have come to really like. Sad that he passed away. 5 stars because it's a great album.
Legendary
The beginning of some fantastic albums.
So damn good. 5 stars.
A pretty impressive outing for the group! I only knew 2 songs going in, but the whole album rocked! Great guitars and a positive vibe. Definitely will stay in my collection. A solid 5
How is this his debut?!?! Oh man so many good songs, it’s no wonder they’re legends! Listen again: yes Purchase for my collection: I think I have it on vinyl already Favourite Song: Breakdown. Still one of my all time faves.
Classic
Day63 - thank you tom petty for leaving us with such great albums
Great album!!
A short, economical album of blistering rock. What a debut album! Solid hooks and dynamic performances! It is all here. The only complaint I have about this album is that classics like "Breakdown" at only 2:42 are far too short. I could have used one more verse and chorus for all of the classics.
I love Tom Petty and I love his debut. What an introduction to one of America’s premier rock artists.
Opener sounds like a demo for “America Girl”. 2nd tack is breakdown. What a groove. Home town blues is a great track. This is a fatatstic album.
Love this album, classic rock at its best
I knew I'd love this one. Fave Songs "Breakdown", "American Girl", and "Hometown Blues" 5/5
I mean, duh
me gusta mucho
Forgot how much I love Tom Petty! This was great.
Finally some good old rock and roll on this list. Great riffs, catchy tunes, and the unique sound of Tom Petty. Waiting for gems like this to pop up is what keeps me going on this list.
Fantastic- one of the best of all times
Bas feel good
Amazing how this record encapsulated who Tom Petty and his band were. And American Girl is one of the best songs ever written.
American girl wins the 5!
Good old school rock and roll
Great album. Highlights are "Breakdown" and "American Girl".
5/5 for Breakdown and American Girl alone.
I always knew I liked Tom Petty, but had never sat down to listen to a full album. This whole thing was great, start to finish.
Great
The two hit songs off this album are classic. The rest of the album is really solid. It's a short album. I listened through twice without even noticing. I owned this and Damn the Torpedoes on lp for years. The old days, when you could buy records in a parking lot for $1. Mostly this album sounds like a good time.
I can see why this is a classic. It's engaging, catchy, and what you think a 1970's rock album should be.
Felt like a solid 4 for most of the album, but American Girl pops up as a late banger to take all 5
ace
#PettyForever
I don't think I've ever listened to a Tom Petty album, but I'm glad I did now. I'm really only familiar with his biggest hits, but there are so many other great tunes that don't get the same airplay. 🔥
Good
Mega!!!!!!
Wonderful debut. American girl still an all time favorite.
had no idea this was such a fine album. 1976?!?
Grew up on tom petty
Great
love it. didn’t know this was 1976!
9/10
Tom and the boys debut finds them in perfect stones meets byrds meets rockabilly form. I especially love the spacious organ driven Luna.
Diverse tunes and arrangements, you can tell that they were still sharpening the Tom Petty sound and vibe at this time. That being said the song are well executed, well recorded and make for an enjoyable listen.
Tom Petty debut “new wave” album. You can really hear his R&B roots here on tracks like “Luna” & “Fooled Again”, but the classics “American Girl” and “Breakdown” are also present. The rest is sweet icing on this delicious cake.
Solid 5 stars. All songs are great!
Always a 5.
This album will always be good. Tom petty was brilliant
this was a great album. obviously knew the two big songs off of this one already but didn't know the rest. I mean, it's not like it was out of left field, if you know what tom petty sounds like, then you know what tom petty sounds like. but I appreciate his style and his influences, so overall, I really enjoyed this one
It’s Tom Petty
9/10 amazing stuff — I’m really looking forward to hearing more of Petty’s discography
Album 147 of 1001 Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Rating : 5 / 5 Favorite Track : American Girl Pretty good for a debut album. Carried, for the most part, by two hits. The remainder of the album is good but we know what was to come from him later. I am probably ranking this a little higher than I should, but it is Tom Petty's debut.
Oh fuck yeah!!!!! I love Tom Petty. This album is a debut that definitely feels like a debut, but I love Tom so much that everything he does is phenomenal to me. Listening to him gives my soul the sustenance it craves. I love his songwriting, I love his incredibly distinct nasal twang, and I fucking dig his guitar playing. And American Girl is one of my all-time most favourite songs ever written; it's my go-to karaoke number, it's the best song to belt out in the car when you're cruisin' along by yourself trying to escape the doldrums of life, it's everything. I love you, Tom! I was so incredibly sad the day I heard about his passing. He's an absolute gem and I wish I'd had the chance to see him live.
TP is goat!
Classic. Never listened all the way through.
Gotta love Tom Petty. Who doesn’t?
TP is always 5 stars in my view. Breakdown is a favorite always.
Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers debut does not disappoint in any way. I’ll always have a soft spot for Tom Petty.
I really liked this album
You really can't go wrong with a Tom Petty album. His discography is the gift that keeps on giving, with treasures to be found on pretty much everything he ever made. This little gem was the band's debut, showing the band was still a work in progress, but with a level of quality that some bands strive for over years and never can match. It's wonderfully crafted, full of youthful energy but also moments of emotional honesty in the songwriting that would become central to all of Petty's work going forward. It reveals Petty's/the band's full understanding of songcraft and what makes a great album. And they were just getting started. Fave Songs (All songs, from most to least favorite): American Girl; Breakdown; Mystery Man; Hometown Blues; Anything That's Rock 'n' Roll; Strangered in the Night; Luna; Fooled Again (I Don't Like It); The Wild One, Forever; Rockin' Around (With You)
Has all the hits and is just an AWESOME album!
I could swing either way on this but considering how little I usually like "classic rock" suggestions on this list and how much I actually enjoy this one, I'll give it 5 stars. Three chords and a lot of energy, gotta love it.
Un 5 bien mérité, un vrai bon album ! À réécouter !
I can easily see how Petty’s voice isn’t for everyone, but I personally love his simple, catchy music paired with his difficulty with pronouncing words
Thoroughly enjoyed.
If the only two songs of worth were American Girl and Breakdown, the debut from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers would have been a classic. There is, however, so much more here. At the time this was released, Petty's brand of roots-oriented rock didn't really fit with most AOR or even Southern Rock stations. At least in the Metro NYC area, his music was heard on the emerging New Wave stations such as WNEW. As southern fried as he was, he appealed more to the punks and new wave crowd for his fresh sound.
Great album. TP’s deep cuts are better than his hits. 5/5
Tom Petty is so good!
Tom Petty is always 5 stars in my book.
Who puts the best track last on the album?
LOVE Tom Petty! I could listen to him all day
Classic Tom - could not love more. He ranks in my top 10 (maybe 5) live performances.
One of the all time great albums
It does not get much better than this! A 5 star album any day of the week. I saw Tom and the Heartbreakers supporting Nils Lofgren when this album came out. Nils was great, but impossible to follow Tom!
Brilliant, hard to believe it was their first album - it sounds so focused and complete. Breakdown and American Girl are stand outs, but it is all great!
Massa massa
Love love love it. All I need to say.
Very good classic rock
awesome
Good stuff. Petty is a legend.
Always love Tom! This is perhaps one of his best albums!
I already know 5 and it's a damn shame this is his only entry on this list
a really great album. it has what a call a southern USA rock sound
When I was growing up I thought of Tom Petty as an old guy that got played on the classic rock stations with sleepy tunes like "Free Fallin" and "Mary Jane's Last Dance." But I'll be damned if these aren't bangers. My mind has been slowly changing about him over the years, and this album solidifies my fandom - I feel like I finally "get it." My favorite is probably "American Girl," that song is addicting.
I generally like Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, but I didn’t know that I would love this album. So good, track after track!!
I never think of Tom Petty. I don't dislike him but I never feel the need to listen to a whole album. Seems I've been depriving myself. I knew the singles Breakdown and American Girl (the latter of which I love...except when I'm driving alone at night and it comes on the radio and I start to sing along and then I realize I've seen someone sing along to this song driving alone at night and I don't want to put the lotion in the basket and so I turn it off real quick) but I didn't know any of the others. From the first drum beat, I loved this great mix of songs. And at a scant 30 minutes, this album goes down super easy and is never boring.
This is an American classic from a man who is an American classic. What a debut album for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers… What can I say. This is one of the great rock records of the 70s. Fantastic!
good solid album, history to the ears
The frickin' best
this is SO GOOD...please break my heart tom petty
Outstanding first album!
I enjoyed every single song on the album, but none of them are giving me strong emotions just yet. I don't think this will ever reach 5 territory, but it is so solid I can't give it anything below a 4.
Duh.
I've got plenty of Tom Patty's songs in a playllist, but ive never ever listen to whole album
Easy
FIVE
what an album, a stone cold classic
I was surprised by how much I liked this. Only knew a few of his songs before but I keep replaying this album.
Love Tom petty and the heartbreakers! love american girl! and breakdown!
A fantastic album can’t believe I’ve never heard it before.
Amazing album
TP and the Hb will never not be great.
I. Love. Tom. Petty.
LOVE THIS ALBUM!! And the reminder to listen to more tom petty :-)
Feel good tunes!!!
R.I.P. Great album
Perfect in its simplicity
I ruddy love Tom Petty, he's wonderful. This is a fantastic album with some of his best.
Debut album American Girl : an outstanding song. One of the best songs ever period. Breakdown: an excellent song. Distinctive Tom Petty vocals. Great rock and roll voice Michael Campbell: fantastic guitar A very good debut album. Four stars
7/10 Nice start and good rockiness but nothing stood out massively. Highlight: American Girl
02/07/2026 Short and sweet, exactly how I like it. A good album too! May he rest in peace. Spotify listeners: 10.2 million
Review: This was a very good album. There was only one miss in my opinion so the consistency was amazing. The best elements were for sure the guitar and background instruments. I am not as high on Tom Petty’s vocals as some people are but I still think they are decent. My favorite song was easily American Girl. The up tempo feel works so well for this band and I loved everything about that song. I can see this album also having amazing replay value in the future but I guess we will have to see how well it ages in the playlist.
American Girl and Breakdown are my favorites off the album, solid 3.5/5 album imo
Pretty solid album with some iconic songs. Probably a 3.5/5 but I’ll round up because of tom petty.
A pleasant surprise! I know Tom Petty is respected as a songwriter, but on first impressions this looked like basic, leather-jacketed, pre-punk 70s American rawk and roll. And maybe it is that, but it's really good!
Such an easy album to listen to. Really did enjoy this. Definitely need to listen to more Tom Petty with and without his heartbreakers.
It’s really good but I think it’s kinda over-rated. I didn’t really find any tracks mind blowing. They are above average but just not as good as it appears to be.
songs that just want to make you get up and dance. It’s not flashy, but it’s so full of soul and warmth. Fun album, and it ends on an absolute banger.
Only 2 songs on here that I knew, but those songs are great!
Great debut album.
I've been gradually losing interest in classic rock as I've gotten older, at least with the stuff I'm not very familiar with. I knew a couple songs from this but I didn't think I would be that interested. I thought it was great though, I like Tom Petty's voice Highlights: Breakdown
pretty nice! i liked this significantly more than how i normally like this sort of old school rock'n'roll. easy listening. might listen to this again
Pretty good but bug standard classis rock. It's good, not that long and does what it sets out to do. Some fun bops here and there but not an all too consequential listen. Bit of an odd inclusion to pick from his entire catalogue, but it's good to see Tom Petty represented.
None of the songs on the album speak to me, but in general I like him and the band. Soooo
Great debut
Another great debut album. Good, clean rock and roll.
super fun - loved this :)
Man this dude’s music repertoire is surprisingly deep I liked this one quite a bit, it kinda had everything I want in an album; super catchy, multiple standout songs (Anything that’s Rock n Roll, Breakdown, American Girl), good vocals, and plenty of variety. I really love that southern rock sound that’s present in some of their songs, just something we don’t get a ton of on this list unfortunately. Don’t really have a whole lot of complaints about this one; it’s short and sweet but I guess if I had to come up with something it’d be that I don’t think the highs are particularly high. Don’t think there’s any songs that I just can’t help but play on repeat Just a really solid record to cap off the week. Not a life changing album or anything but it’s good music that’s anything but boring, so I’ll happily take it
Just a good album all around, nothing too special nothing bad.
I really enjoyed this one. 30 minutes felt too short!
Great sound. Great voice. Dylanesque. Solid
This might be getting the benefit of the doubt to be a 4 because I know what would follow. The hits are carrying it here, the rest is fairly forgettable filler but at least has a good sound to it.
Very solid but clearly a debut - hints of what would make them so great 4+
I’ve always kind of liked Tom Petty - whether solo or with the Heartbreakers - but it never quite clicked for me 100%. “Mary Jane’s Last Dance” came closest, but that song was never on a regular album. Well, back to this debut album: it’s mostly cool, too, but it lacks those truly outstanding moments. And I still can’t quite put my finger on why it doesn’t really grab me. Based on what I consciously perceive, it should actually be five stars, but it doesn’t feel that way.
Great guitar and pretty fun
A pretty phenomenal debut.
Makes me want a beer, cigarette, and jukebox
Tom Petty rocks and sways...even back in 1976
Love Tom Petty, like this album.
Very much the debut album that hints of what may come while still being a sound album. The best songs are all time Petty. The rest are in the main interesting enough to keep you listening if still showing the development. If had to pick 1 album this would not have been the Petty album I would have picked, (but I would have this and others to be fair)for the list, but then 1 from him while others have many, many is plain wrong and somewhat a token gesture. 4 Star
Not my favorite Tom Petty album but it's still great. Maybe it's just because they are so familiar now but listening to this record, you can feel they got some great chemistry. Interesting mix of songs on here too. Rock, RnB and some Countryish sounding things. One of the greats.
The Tom Petty sound didn't arrive fully formed, but you can hear greatness here.
There are a lot of great Tom Petty records, and this album has two of what I would consider his best songs, but I think there are other albums that would fit this list better. This is still a solid 4.
I know people have strong opinions on Petty, but I am a fan, and this album is a great example of why. The sounds are great and I can listen to Breakdown and American Girl all day.
4/5
Short, bluesy, fun. No time is wasted.
no conocía ninguna canción del álbum pero no sabía que los conocía, que sean los de mary jane last dance y learning to fly ya sabía que me iba a gustar el álbum, y así ha sido, mi favorita breakdown
8/10
Some classics on this one, some that are forgetable
Solid songwriting. Unpopular opinion, Tom Pettys voice bothers the shit out of me. I love Breakdown and American Girl. There’s some sleeper tracks on here that also show up in the greatest hits albums so I was surprised to hear how complete of an album this is.
chilled out album great for cycling !
Classic. Rock. Mostly enjoyable, with a little filler sprinkled in. Other TP albums are better than this one, as a whole.
This was surprising. I liked it better than I expected to. It was definitely more rocking than I expected it to be, as I was ready for a more Americana/roots rock style. It was breezy, light, and fast, never hanging on too long, which is one of its strongest traits. This is a high 3 I'll round to 4.
Great for a debut, still dig his later stuff more
Pretty cool album, got a bit of groove to it and passion,
Amazing debut album, several truly memorable songs, intro to TP's very distinctive voice. Favorite deeper cut: "The Wild One Forever" 10 songs in only 30 minutes!
3.5/5
Nice, but nothing exceptional
Great album
Breakdown and American Girl are so iconic and nostalgiac for me, and beyond that, it's a very pleasant listen overall.
Pretty good album. Enjoyed it for the most part.
I have always liked Tom Petty--he had so many excellent songs and albums, why his first album was chosen for this list is beyond me.
I always thought Tom Petty sounds like if Bob Dyan was a metrosexual rock artist rather than an autistic jew folk singer. I don't really know what the deal is with 'Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers' versus just Tom Petty as a solo artist, but I definitely only recognise music from his solo work. I was expecting to hear some massive hits but wasn't met with any. Anyways, this was short & sweet so I'll keep this review as such. Good listen. Nothing to complain about here, I enjoyed every song but nothing really 'stood out' to me. Good vibes on this one!
Really a 3.5 but I’m rounding up because I love Tom Petty. This album is more important because it kicked off a legendary career than great in itself. But there’s still some monster hits on here. It started a great run for Petty, and his songwriting is undeniably phenomenal. A strange inclusion because Damn the Torpedoes and Wildflowers would be five stars, and Southern Accents and Full Moon Fever would be easy fours, but hey, some Petty is better than no Petty.
Not my favorite Tom Petty but still pretty good.
Tom Petty has always seemed like a timeless artist to me. Overall a good to great album. American Girl feels like a song that has always been and kicks this album up a level.
I like tom petty more than I feel like I should
Loved this. Not sure if I can give it a 5, I don't know if it's something that I'd consider essential but it's a really great debut album. I'm aware that Full Moon Fever isn't a Heartbreakers album but that's peak Petty for me. This album doesn't reach those heights but the deep cuts here were really good. Somewhere between a 4 and a 5 for me.
Good album. Too much filler to consider a great album, but a couple of all-time classics that almost make up for it.
Day 24 Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers (1976) by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers Not the biggest fan of southern rock, so I wasn’t sure how this would land. But this really surprised me. It’s absolutely not boring. I enjoyed it pretty much from the first second, and for the first time in a while I actually felt like the album was too short. Tom Petty’s iconic nasal voice works perfectly with those punchy guitars. It’s catchy, but never crosses into that annoying cheesy territory. What stood out most is that the songs don’t all blur together. There’s actually some texture here, which I don’t always feel with this kind of rock. That made a big difference for me. Wine pairing? No wine. This is cheap American lager that tastes like piss, but somehow it’s exactly right for the moment. Food pairing? Hot dogs on the grill. Vinyl? Yeah, I’d want this. First listen? Yes. Overall 4 out of 5.
A nice pop album is always so refreshing after being forced to listen to hours of dogshit.
Solid
Just finished the Tom Petty book by Warren Zanes which is one of the top 2 rock biographies I've ever read. Tom Petty rules. Solid debut but much much much more brilliance to come. RIP.
It feels appropriate that this closes with "American Girl," the best song, as an indication of where Tom Petty was headed. The rest of this album is fine, but it's not particularly surprising that "Breakdown" is the only other song that broke through. While I'd argue "The Wild One, Forever," deserves more attention, most of this album sets up what was to come from Tom Petty. Noteworthy in its own right, but a preview of better things to come. 3.5 stars, rounding up to 4.
3.5/5
A good start but much better was to come. 4 star. Fave - waiting
Something about Tom Petty always turned me off, but I never really dug into his stuff. Genuinely enjoyed much of this album and will definitely be open ears to more of him if he has other albums in the list.
It’s rockin’!
So good. Has some great bangers and everything works well.
Really enjoyed this one, classic sounds
It's a real tragedy this is the only Tom Petty on the list. What's further is this isn't the best album they put out. You can really tell they're still searching for their sound. They have a lot of influences like Bob Dylan, some more Van Morrison, and some sprinkles of Fleetwood Mac and Bad Company mixed in. Still, this is greater than a lot of the other crap we've had to listen to. I'll take this any day.
American Girl is from 1976. This is shocking.
A lot of it sounds like "a 70s rock song", but that doesn't mean it's not a great album. Probably on this list more of because his later greatness.
Good
Pretty alright, my main issue is some of the vocals arnt that clear and sound weird
3.75. Many songs a little throwaway, but no rubbish.
Another great album, "Strangered in the Night" is amazing
Very good acompaniment with the guitar in the background there. You can almost forget that someone's singing.
Fave songs - Luna and American girl
Не особо зашло
nothing that was an absolute killer worth a 5. other than that I like tom petty
This rocked way harder than I was expecting. Not the dad rock I anticipated
He’s another GOAT!
Ajattomia rokkibiisejä joita kuuntelee mielellään melkein milloin vaan. Tältä levyltä ei kuitenkaan ne itelle kovimmat lekat löytynyt
Rockin around (with you) Fooled again (I Don’t Like It) Luna American Girl Took me a second to get used to Tom Petty’s style of singing but then it grew on me quickly. I really liked it when he sang “I don’t like it!” With such conviction. American Girl is such a great track and sounds like it came from the 90s. There are definitely some boring filler tracks in here too though 70/100
I’ve heard of Tom Petty but never listened to him before. Overall I was pleasantly surprised by this one. There’s nothing groundbreaking on it but I liked every track and it didn’t outstay its welcome. I’d definitely listen to more from him. Top Track - Anything That’s Rock N Roll
lindo chico. buena portada. arranco MUY arriba. va como variando de ritmo, like itt. da vibes rock, country, lentas, buenas letrasss, variadito, muy bueno.
Ripper album
Breakdown has main character energy (Shower)
Some good new songs I hadn’t heard before, will go back
The headline, an upbeat, bluesy, groovy proto new-wave explosion onto the scene. For a debut album it is fantastically well produced with all its roots and blues influences pulling through and yet decidedly more modern than some of the records being put out at the time. In the year of never mind the bollocks and punk asending to the top of youth and pop culture iconography, Tom petty uses those same rock and roll, Motown and doo wop influences that birthed punk to move it into what I can only describe as post punk before punk had even hit its lofty heights. In this record he crafts the landscape of what popular music will be after punk has come and eaten itself alive. Whilst there are no tracks on the album that may hit the heights of his later work there are standout tracks on here that should probably get as much recognition as them. Whilst a criticism included throw at it is that it is very springsteenesque in its writing, with born to run coming oht the year before, it would be hard to outrun the comparisons. Yet I would say that Tom petty’s album has a much rawer feel in terms of instrumentation and does genuinely feel light years ahead of its time, whereas Born to run feels and sounds like 70s. A modern album from a rock and roller who might have just rode the last wave of it. 8.3/10
slapssss
Tom petty rules
Bestes Cover so far (not) aber gute Musik zum Autofahren. Wird wieder laufen.
Æ tror for så vidt æ likte det? Helt greit. Mest overraska over at Tom Petty bare har ett album på lista, når så mange av dem som ligne på han (sånn derre manneartister) har fire-fem album hver på lista. Jaja, det e vel forskjell på folk. Men ikke så ille musikk.
