Reviews (page 2 of 14)
I've never actually listened to Doolittle before today and I feel like I've done myself an injustice. There is not one bad song on this album. Some great musicianship and sheer inventiveness in each song, everything sounds different and still balanced. Definitely going into the rotation!
One of those bands, like Velvet Underground, that spurred thousands to form bands of their own. This album and the previous release Surfer Rosa were absolutely electrifying to me, as a young musician at this time.
Hi-Debaser, Tame, Wave of Mutilation, Here Comes Your Man, Crackity Jones Lo-Mr. Grieves Probably regarded as The Pixies most famous album (this reviewer prefers Trompe le Monde), it's wall-to-wall short and sweet bangers, packed to the gills with Frank Black and Kim Deal coolness, there really isn't a bad track in the bunch, maybe some that just aren't as good as others (Mr. Grieves), but nothing offensive and they're all short that by the time you might think of skipping a track, it's already over, with the longest cut clocking in just shy of 4 minutes. Unfortunately, that means the party is over all too quickly!
I have no idea how they do this. I've listened to this for a long time and love it. But if someone describes songs like Tame and Crackity Jones, you would think this is unlistenable. But the violent vocal delivery somehow fits and there is plenty of time for balance and melodies as well. It's an incredible album.
1989 - Alternative rock; indie rock; noise pop
Loved this album before thos app. This is definitely a must listen for everyone. Certified Alt rock classic.
Who doesn't love Pixies?
This is the album where it all came together for the Pixies; there expertise at going quiet-loud-quiet. Their expertise at churning beautiful pop melodies while maintaining their hard noisy edge. With songs like Debaser, Monkey Gone to Heaven, Here Comes Your Man and especially Gouge Away, The Pixies found the object blend of pop sensibilities and manic rock energy. A no brainer 5 star album.
Two 5s in a row is a rare treat and a third this week to boot. Christmas has come early. I wonder what we'll get on Christmas day. It better be fitting for the occasion. I don't want to be sat around with my family listening to Sinead O'Connor, crying into my Christmas Pudding.
This sounds just as amazing as when I was 15. I remember getting Doolittle and anything else on an indie label out of the library! I love Kim Deal’s backing vocals and the playing on it still sounds really exciting.
‘tame’- less kind to my ears first thing in the morning… ‘Wave of Mutilation’ on the other hand… ‘Here Comes your Man’ makes me feel nostalgic! It feels like pop- mind you, in the nineties I thought Radiohead was an appropriately jolly band to play at a party, so what do I know?! ‘monkey Gone to Heaven’- very familiar! And, one of the best songs about a monkey. ‘la la Love you’- I like the fact that there’s no ambiguity about the lyrics. I do love the noisy riffs, and tuneful melody combo.
So many great songs packed into less than 40 minutes!
This album absolutely owns.
Outstanding album. Every track is top drawer.
One of my all time favorites!
Friends much cooler than I forced the Pixies on me in high school. Hey was on a mixtape that has a very special place in my heart and I still listen to the playlist often. I love this album so much.
Absolute classic, so many great hits in one album! Doolittle, Wave of Mutiliation, Here Comes Your Man and Monkey Gone to Heaven are in my repeat listens! I listened to this album 3 times in the day period it was given to me!
UN CHIEN ANDALOUSIA
Know this one well. Two Pixies albums in a row! Unlike Bossa Nova yesterday which I didn’t know well but thought had the same “vibe” but none of the tunes, this is an unequivocal start-to-finish classic that has been in permanent rotation since I first heard it 15 years ago.
In my top 3 of all time
I wish I found this in 1989
Fantastic album! So, so good mirror universe indie rock. Fave track - there are maybe 2 or 3 tracks on the album that _aren't_ contenders for being a fave. I'm going to pick "No. 13 Baby" from my listens yesterday as the highlight - those guitar lines!
I don’t have a lot to say about this, don’t know enough about the genre or The Pixies but this album is great.
You can’t really go wrong with this album
One of my all time favorites, so nice I listened twice. Just prototypical and great
so good it's not even fair. i will play every track on the jukebox until the end of time.
один из любимейших среди инди-рок альбомов
Have heard this one before but this time it really clicked, great stuff 👌
I am Un Chien Andalou!
It's interesting to get another Pixies album outside of their debut--I wouldn't have guessed that the project editors would have been all that into the Pixies, but now I see that there are three albums in total, which seems a bit overkill. Either way, I've never heard anything from this album before except "Monkey gone to heaven" (and I'm not sure I ever registered that it was by the Pixies, sadly), and if anything I'd say it's probably more cohesive than "Surfer Rosa", certainly more self-assured and polished, even if it necessarily can't have that rawness/freshness that their first album had (and a bit too muddy sounding for my taste). My favorites among the lot were probably "Debaser", "I bleed", "Mr. Grieves", "No 13 baby" and the mesmerizing "Hey". It's fun to hear another round of the Pixies, even if it doesn't seem (to me) like they really moved forward with this album, and sadly the recording process seemed to push Frank Black/Black Francis and Kim Deal even further apart. I'm really torn with a rating for this, as it's not as great as "Surfer Rosa", but it's *so* much better than most of my 3-star ratings, so four it is.
given my age, I'm embarrassed to write this album was new to me, and I quite enjoyed the Pixies quirky sound. I do think "There Goes My Gun" should have followed "Here Comes Your Man."
How is it that the best musical artists don't sound anything like what they were trying to imitate? Kurt, "Teen Spirit" doesn't sound like a Pixies song... and nor does anything on Pablo Honey, Thom. Anyway, great album. Not as weird as its made out to be.
Would give a 3.5 but no halves so I am bumping this up to a four. Very few low points on this album, only a little lower because it's a bit repetitive sonically. Lots of great songs though. Debaser, Here Comes Your Man, and, of course, Hey! Good album.
Boderline 5, another great and flowing alt album
Doolittle One of those bands whose songs I know well through osmosis, but have never given a proper listen to - and another one of those albums I wish I’d listened to earlier as it is pretty great! Debaser, Here Comes Your Man and Monkey Gone to Heaven are obviously the famous ones, and they are brilliant bits of immediate, catchy alt rock. Debaser has that slight new wave feel with the drums and then the surfy backing vocals, Here Comes Your Man is a superb bit of power pop and Monkey Gone to Heaven is just great. There’s some great stuff on here, Wave of Mutilation is brilliantly catchy for a song about driving your car into the sea, I Bleed has some great guitar, Mr Grieves has a kind of country-ish twinge and a great sense of frenetic swing. La La Love You is great, another catchy bit of jangly surf inflected pop with a slight off kilter sense. No 13 Baby is a superior bit of pre-grunge alt rock with, as throughout, some great bass playing. There Goes My Gun is great too, the superb backing vocals and Duane Eddy style guitar solo really make it shine. I loved Silver too, kind of western-ish with a definite English folk atmosphere. I expected it to be far more abrasive and far less melodic, but it does a great job at combining those two things, you can hear their alt rock/punk-ish attitudes and origins, but they are combined with a great sense of pop craft, with new wave, surf, classic rock influences and inflections. And of course the lyrics and themes have enough outsider unconventionality to them to keep them interesting and pull them away from their rock/alt rock peers. A high 4 with potential, looking forward to listening some more. 🧚🧚🧚🧚 Playlist submission: Here Comes Your Man
The Pixies' heyday was slightly before my time, so I never connected with them, but they were famously influential on the early to mid 90s rock bands that I adored, like Nirvana and Radiohead. While I've heard songs like Monkey Gone to Heaven, I've never listened to this album in its entirety. Overall, I think it's pretty OK. It's not transformative, but that's only because it *was* transformative when it was released in the 80s. Some songs sound a little dated, and some songs still sound very subversive. I think the album started a little slowly, but I warmed to it as it went on. Black's voice isn't the greatest, but it's somehow perfect for this band. The use of Kim Deal's hushed vocals on some - but not all - songs tend to add a welcome ethereal quality to the punk rock vibes, and tend to hit hard because the effect is used sparingly. I'd give it a 3.5 if I could. I think it's a very good album that sounds a little dated, while simultaneously holding up surprisingly well for an album released in the 80s.
Surfer Rosa’s rawness and playfulness makes it my fondest Pixies record, but Doolittle may have the better tracklist. I wish it didn’t sound so civilised, but maybe this is like Bunuel’s dinner party characters: black tie, ancient silverware and bloodlusty surrealism. I’d forgotten how brilliant Black Francis’s lyrics and delivery are; he’s a master of fascinating, imaginative and comic obscurity, a contrast to the more typical half-arsed obscurity we encounter with more pretentious members of this list. The numerology section of Monkey is both hilarious and mad.
Pixies were never really a favorite of mine. I get their influence and the songs are good, but I could never buy-in 100%. Part of that is the production; their albums kind of feel stuck in the late 80’s to me, for some reason. The drum sound especially, I really don’t care for it…like, why is the snare drum the loudest instrument on this record? For me, they’re a better “song band” than “album band.” I think they get a lot of leeway from fans on the lesser known songs, because the well known ones are so good. As whole, it was hard not to lose interest about three quarters of the way through Doolittle.
This is honestly a great album. Not something I thought I would be into but I was pleasantly surprised while listening to it. A solid album, maybe I should listen to some of Pixies’ other work.
I was ready to love this based off the singles but it’s too punk for me. I like a lot of the elements- thumping bass; surf guitar; interesting backing vocals; but the over all impression is shrill, shrieky and a bit angsty. If I was born in a different place at a different time I can imagine I’d love it.
Quiet loud quiet loud - awesome alternative rock. Weird as hell lyrics, but this was surely the future of rock, Americana, and new wave post punk back in the late 80s? Loved seeing them back together at Brixton Academy in the early 2000s before Kim left. No disappointment even if Kim and Charles weren't talking to each other! Doolittle is still a great listen.
YES! This is what I'm talking about. Songs that get in, get it done, and get out.
I was hungover like anybody's business while listening to this. A few tracks I didn't quite have associated with The Pixies. Good album. Solid 4/5.
I didn’t expect to like this, but I really did.
I didn't think that I would be thrilled with this one and the first few tracks didn't disappoint me on that sentiment...I mean, fine, but not anything that pushes me to want to listen more. Then around track 4 I started to warm up just a bit. Then I recognized one of the tracks (La La Love You) from a mixtape I received in my younger days and got the warm fuzzies. That endeared the album to me more.
I always kinda hated on the Pixies, but I'm not sure why. It probably had more to do with me not really liking the people who liked the Pixies back in the day. But - they're pretty dope. The songs are "out there" enough while still being catchy in a weird way. Plus, I think their influence on a lot of the 90s-2000s bands that I dig is pretty obvious. I'm still not sure I'm a Pixies "fan" - but I respect them. And - I'm giving them a one-star bump for all the hate and shade I used to throw their way.
First time properly listening to the Pixies and I really enjoyed this.
Pleasantly surprised at the opening of this one. Great guitar-forward anthem style song from a band I always attributed to songs like "Here Comes Your Man," which happens to be on this album. Debaser is a solid rock song. Wave of Mutilation is a great song! After listening to "I Bleed," I think Weezer has some explaining to do about that Sweater Song. This is a surprisingly great album!
Dark and catchy songs, great lyrics and awesome vocals. You'll have to experience several listens to fully get the greatness of this album
2nd album is also one I'm intimately familiar with! Dunno the first time I actually listened through Doolittle, probably not that long ago actually. The big songs are all bangers and I like the less-popular tracks as well.
TBH, I was probably the last to recognise this album’s greatness. At the time I used to think it paled in comparison with Guns N Roses. But it grew on me, eventually. And while not all of Doolittle is sweet, there are multiple tracks whose place in history has been cemented.
Not a fan but this is a classic.
Great 1989 alternative music--a bit punk, a bit itself. From the first track I knew them. (Debaser). The hits on this album are "Here Comes Your Man" and "Hey"--I also liked Debaser, I Bleed, Monkey Gone to Heaven--and Silver. Gouge Away is good too.
Wow, the tracks on this are so short! It's a great vibe - I only knew Here Comes Your Man/Monkey Gone To Heaven before. I'm gutted that I missed out on grunge/alt while it was happening but at least I rode the Britpop wagon for all it was worth.
This was close to getting the 5th star. I remember listening to this album in 1990 at band camp. Then, maybe 6 or so years later hearing singles from it on the radio like it was something new. Such a good album.
I've heard most of the songs off of here, but I don't know that I've ever listened to this album before. So much of what would happen in rock in the 90s is presaged here, and yet this album doesn't sound dated. The sound quality could be a little better, as it sounds a bit lofi at times, but overall it's a really groundbreaking album with no obvious flaws 4/5
Finally some good fucking music
Excellent album, definitely on the forefront of the grunge/alternative rock movement. Funny, I always thought the song "Here Comes Your Man" was a remake of a classic 50s or 60s song. It just has that feel to it, but today I learned it's a Black Francis original. I don't love his voice but otherwise this is a very good album. 4 stars.
I like this album :) already heard it.
Rating: 8/10 Best songs: Debaser, Monkey gone to heaven, Hey
Was reading an article that said the Pixies were the most influential alt/indie rock band of all time and this album shows why.
One of my college roommates was way into The Pixies, so I’m sure I’ve heard this album before. I was very much in the infancy of my music discovery at the time, and I was firmly committed to classic rock. This time I’m actually paying attention. I definitely remember Gouge Away fondly. The biggest surprise of this album is Here Comes Your Man. The chorus, and especially the lead guitar part, sound like a 1950s radio hit by a band of dudes wearing suits on the Ed Sullivan Show projected in black and white. Other highlights are Debaser, Monkey Gone to Heaven, and Hey. I very much dislike the screaming parts of Tame, but they are only a small slice of the album. It’s nice that my friend, J, and I get to bond a bit over this album 20 years after college. He got to tell me it’s about time, dumbass.
I really like this album. I was hooked within like the first 12 seconds of Debaser. Those jangly chords are the truth.
Who doesn't love some Pixies
Good record. Gouge away <3
I’m here for the Pixies. I had heard of them but never listened to them. Weezer vibes and I dig.
This has got me more into the Pixies than I ever have been. Some great tracks in here
First time giving this Pixies album a listen. Glad I’ve got to know the Pixies better during all of this, well defo revisit this album more than the first one I reckon. Knew a couple of the tracks on there, and really enjoyed the ones that I didn’t already know. Here Comes Your Man is a classic.
more punkie than i thought it would be!
It's a fantastic album that I listen to fairly regularly.
I'm quickly becoming a huge Pixies fan. Just legendary tunes and so amazingly different than anything else out there.
Really impressed with the variety here. A ton of great tracks. 4.5
nice
I've already heard the album before coming into this and had already thought it was a little overrated, so after my relisten I still had some similar feelings. I think the highlights of the album like Debaser and Here Comes Your Man are some of the best songs I've ever heard, however asides from the highs the rest of the album is sort of just mediocre indie rock and nosier rock fusion. The influence is unspoken but the album itself sounds a bit outdated to me, so I have to give this a 3.5 stars.
3/5 kind of all samey to me
yeah it was okay 3.5
I liked a few songs of the album, some were not my taste but i can see why people like them.
I wouldn’t doubt it if a bunch of 2000’s bands said the Pixies influenced them. A lot of sounds that sound like they influenced bands like The Killers or Franz Ferdinand
Too long, outstays its welcome. Nowhere near as good as Surfer Rosa. Some great tracks, too much filler.
Doolittle more like poolittle
I’ve never got the hype around Pixies - they have the occasional good track, and influenced a lot of later bands, but never really did it for me back then, and still don’t now. It’s ok.
It was alright. Not the worst thing to listen to, but I don’t know if I would choose this over something else. I actually listened to the whole album.
Doolittle did very little for me. A few good songs (which I have on the greatest hits) this didn’t blow me away. I’m very much in the minority it seems but I just don’t really get the Pixies.
Definitely an acquired taste, need more listens
The first half of the album was really quite enjoyable and I really liked 'Debaser'. The second half got weirder - 'Crackity Jones' and 'No 13 Baby' were not my favourites. I think this album is a grower, but I base my rating on first listen, so it's a 3.
Angst truly is timeless
Expected filler. Got bangers. I was a fan of the lyrics and the vibe, but unsure how quickly I'd run back to this one. Solid. Ps. Here Comes Your Man is the most out of place song on any of the albums so far.
High energy garage rock. This album has some of Pixies best tunes including my favourite and inspo for early V Men - Hey. Having said that it’s a long album with a fair few filler songs which means I’m giving it a 3.
Experimental and undoubtedly inspirational, theres not a lot of filler on this album. While I enjoyed it and probably wouldn't argue if someone put it on, I don't think that I would ever put it on myself. There really isn't a stand out song on this one. It's experimental and accessible, but not particularly catchy. catchy
Songs: Gouge away, Debaser
It was cool listening to an album from the year I was born. Definitely grungy, which I thought I would like. The sound lyric wise is much more free form (think talking heads) but not as great as what comes later in the 90s. It’s a cool starting point into the type of music that will follow. If nothing else it’ll be cool to recognize one of these songs if they pop up.
Never really listened to a full Pixies album before. Some classics "Gouge Away" and "Here comes my man". Overall enjoyed, but probably takes a few more repeat cycles to fully click.
Had some moments where I vibed with it, but just not generally my preferred style. I can see why some love this though.
not 80sist just don't like it
I want to really like it. It’s just ok.
Meh. A few OK songs and the rest was boring
ZZZZZzzzzzzzzzz
Finally can say I've listened to the Pixies. Finally can say why I didn't have any Pixies in my vinyl, CD, or iPod collections. Didn't grab me, maybe only a couple songs were interesting. Unlike a lot of the other blander stuff we've smoked, can't even say I would use this as background music to something.
I don't think this was the best Pixies could have done. not that there was anything wrong with their technique, but I feel like they could do better. A lot of these songs just sounded uncoordinated or clumsy in composition, as if they were still practicing their songwriting. Especially the first two songs and a couple of the later songs where they had some lackluster verses, simple strum patterns on basic chords, and then would just screamed the title of the song over and over again. They were still screaming Tame by the time we got to the track Hey. Gouge Away felt like the best performance while still maintaining the harsh sound they were going for on the rest of the album. I also enjoyed Monkey Gone to Heaven and the times they focused on lyrics such as in I Bleed. My favorite track was Here Comes Your Man for just being more musical. Did I need to hear this before I die? I wouldn’t say so
I am not a big Pixies fan and find most of their music to be a wall of noise. Will take the Pogues any day.
I can kinda understand that it was important for what came after, but now it doesn't sound all that interesting
Maybe they're just an acquired taste but thought this album kinda stank. Here Comes Your Man was the only song I'd listen again and even then it's okay? The instrumentals were very well done which is pretty much the only reason this doesn't get one star
I can't stand this band. I'm not even sorry. 1.5/5
My first thought when I saw this come up today was "Shit, another Pixies album" because I just hated Surfer Rosa when it came up earlier. But I listen to everything so I hit play and initially I disliked the first song because of the yelling rather than singing, but eventually I disliked it a little less. There are some interesting musical moments but overall it's still not something I particularly enjoyed. I didn't hate it nearly as much as Surfer Rosa so I guess there is that.
Before we had mass shootings in the US weird kids just listened to shite like this and got beaten up. Not entirely sure what was worse. 'Here Comes Your Man' is a great song but the rest of the album is pretty weak, some nice melodies but too often interrupted by a gimp having a cy scream. I quite liked the sound of the female singer and some of the lighter moments the album offers which is why it gets an extra star. Too often the band sound like they are trying too hard to cool or different or something, which really doesn't matter as it has all aged really badly. Ooooh aren't we edgy seems to be the order of the day with most of the filler tracks, which is everything but HCYM and Debasser which left me feeling like OK grandpa. At 38 minutes it does outstay it's welcome too, it all becomes rather boring and similar with no attempt to try an do anything different or make a good song.
DEBASER... good punky tune... lyrics are total nonsense... but fun... TAME... is idiotic... but has energy... WAVE OF MUTILATION... must make sense... to someone... lol... not to anyone of my generation, unfortunately... I BLEED... did that very thing... to my ears... the "message" in this record is weird... and seemingly nonsensical... HERE COMES YOUR MAN... ok, now i'm starting to get it... these guys are like The Velvet Underground... but more modern version... this had to be the hit single... i'm guessing... a bit like The Lemonheads... almost too close... hmmm... but it's EASILY the best song so far... DEAD... makes no sense... lol... i guess it's for shock value... fail... MONKEY GONE TO HEAVEN... again... Velvet Undergound-esque... and musically and lyrically not that stand out... like faux intellectuality... i guess... MR GRIEVES... second time the lyricist mentions "neptune"... i guess that makes it acceptable for college professors to like the record... i guess... CRACKITY JONES... i guess is about crack... it is so bad musically that i don't want to find out... LA LA LOVE YOU... must be a take on the dating life of young folks in 1989... no idea... and not interested... the song is kind of catchy... but not enough for a second listen... NO. 13 BABY... a take on Los Angeles chicano life... i'm guessing... horrible music... THERE GOES MY GUN... is a waste of time... HEY... another Velvet Underground impression... like hey, i'm down here in the gutter... don't you like it here with me? lol... pass... SILVER... i guess makes sense to someone... not me... pass... and finally... the last song on the record... thank GOD... GOUGE AWAY... a take on the Biblical story of Samson... they gouged his eyes out... lovely... so some chick hurt you... lol... no need for this drivel... the best thing about this album... is the ridiculous amount of songs... are, mostly... short in duration.
I always feel like I have to justify not liking (The) Pixies, because friends like them, and because they're ostensibly "my sort of thing" ie they fall under "indie rock". So please do scroll on by, but, meanwhile, I feel compelled to point out why I don't like them and never have. (I'll be positive first though. 1. I like the drumming. 2. I like the guitar sound. 3. I like the energy. Sort of.) Now the things I don't like. 1. Their riffs being based largely around major chords, despite the songs being alternative in style. Always bemuses me. 2.His voice. 3. Her voice. 4. Shouty, discordant, or talky, vocals in general. There are exceptions (D. Byrne for instance.) 5. People trying to play "tunes" on bass guitars. That's pretty much it. I did try this, but they're still not for me, for the reasons itemised above. M'lud.
My main takeaway from this album is that Pixies really didn't know who they were on this album. It's inconsistent and scattered. No two songs actually sound like they belong on the same album. It feels like they really WANTED to make something new but, rather than fabricating something actually new, they just used parts of songs from other bands. It's got bits of the punk sound but it lacks an understanding of the WHY of punk which is honestly kind of offensive. And not in the good way like punk is supposed to be. In the bad way like the kid who shows up at the show with a Ramones shirt but has never actually listened to a Ramones album. One year later, they dropped "Bossanova" which was a thousand times better. Somewhere in that year, they figured themselves out. I'm happy for them. Unfortunately, this album wasn't all that great. Ah well. They can't all be winners.
An already stressful day enhanced by the fraught screams of the pixies into my eardrums. Resting heart rate 91bpm.
I fear my words might trigger some boys :( Honestly, I have no idea why I thought this band had a frontwoman? I was like "OMG YAY! My first girlypop record!" I was sadly mistaken, but knew people still hold them in high regard so I'll probably like it anyway? Well... 1. Debaser - really really cool guitars, eh voice. That fact that genius lyrics actually has a gif of that movie really threw me off. 2. Tame - I actually really like the sound, but hate the vibe of the song. Like, yikes. It just grosses me out. 3. Wave of Mutilation - It's fine, it feels familiar 4. I Bleed - Eh ---I realized here that I've been so thrown off by the first 2 tracks so I took a break and listened to 3 Sabrina Carpenter songs as a palate cleanser :D. I am now back, hopefully able to view the rest of the songs individually.--- 5. Here Comes Your Man - It's fine. Probably nothing I'd come back to, but sounds commercial or movie like 6. Dead - I think here is where I just have to concede this is not for me at all I don't hate the guitars or production, but I can't with the lyrics or stories. I just feel really really grossed out. It just feels like the lyrics are screaming "OMG LOOK AT ME GUYS, I'M SO COOL, I'M SO DIFFERENT, I'M SO EMO, AND EDGY, AND WEIRD :P" Not because it's coming from a place of needing to say those things, but from just seeing how weird you can be for weird sake. Like that one Riverdale meme scene "In case you haven’t noticed, I'm weird. I’m a weirdo. I don't fit in. And I don't want to fit in." This is my first DNF, wow.
vibes throughout the album felt quite random to me
Rock without the passion, hooks or melody.
30 seconds in. WTF is this? Oh, it doesn't get better. Okay, skip that song. This base line slaps, too bad the rest of the song sounds like... this. Couldn't make it to the end. 3rd song is the charm, right? So far it started nice.... Wave of Mutilation is actually quite nice. That's not a sentence I had on my bingo card. Crakity Jones... we're back into the trash from the beginning of the album again. Not nice enough to get two stars.
Awful noise….Just no…
Hate it. I really can't enjoy punk (or is this even punk? This album generator is giving me the feeling that I don't really know what punk is - but anyway, I hate this one). Somehow it's simultaneously annoying chaotic noise and musically absolutely boring to me.
nothing much to say, this album is great and influenced some of my favourite rock music. glad to have given it a full listen finally. 4.5/5
Every song on this album (apart from Silver) is amazing.
Love the pixies, and this album in particular was one of the first that really stood out to me in my youth. The last time i listened to them though was when i saw them at the Pavillion... and there was no kim.
This monkey’s gone to eat candy heaven
Fantastic record
All time classic
Lyssnat på den
Classic.
Amazing album. Full of all the good things.
Doolittle was the first Pixies album I heard and I've loved it ever since.
sophomore year in college this was what i played every morning getting ready, an all time fav
4.5/5 https://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/pixies/doolittle/ Amazing album, certainly Pixies' best. Not one I can listen at any given time, but it's variety influenced such a wide range of rock genres.
Amazing album! Honestly, it's The Pixies best album! It's insanely good! The influence that they had on Nirvana and Kurt Cobain is definitely heard. One of the best albums of the 80's! Truly masterful!
Rageeee, compact album, some easy songs to play on the guitar. I like Pixies. Kim Deal and Frank Black are the best

It's not more "pop" (other than Here Comes Your Man), but it's easily their most accessible album.
I'm Gen-X, but somehow the Pixies have always stayed outside my music knowledge. I did see a solo Frank Black open for the Smashing Pumpkins once, and he was altogether pretty terrible, so my excitement to listen to this record was non-existant. How wrong I was. This album fucks...big time! Not a bad track on the record. Each more interesting than the last. The writing is on point, and the playing is hardcore. My little 90s Alternative soul sparkled for 40 minutes and I can't wait to go back and keep this in regular rotation.
A roller coaster of energy. This is what I live for. This is what happens when you let your inner crazy out. It's on the verge of spinning off into chaos, but it never quite does. Spins: 3 Playlist Additions - Debaser - Wave of Mutilation - Here Comes Your Man - Monkey Gone to Heaven - La La Love You - Hey - Gouge Away
Banger
An almost impecable album. 15 tracks, only 2 mid songs, the rest are absolute bangers. Almost every song could have been a single. I always heard how Kurt Cobain and Thom Yorke were fan of the Pixies, and it's interesting how they might have taken the way their albums go through several phases that blend well together. First some straightforward hits like Here Comes Your Man, Monkey Gone to Heaven and La La Love You. Slow burners like Hey, I Bleed and Silver. Then some harder rocking songs like No. 13 Baby, Debaser and my favorite, Gouge Away. And fill in the blanks with quirky tracks like Mr. Grieves, Crackity Jones and Dead. i got into this album while I was deep into alternative rock in the late 90s, which was a great dissapointment to me that they had broken up, but later had the honor of being present for their reunion at Coachella '05. What a joy to find this album whenever it comes into your life.
An album so good it bears repeated listening and regularly shows up in my mental jukebox unannounced. This album is full of delightful earworms-in-the-making. I bought the album for Wave of Mutiliation after hearing a version of it in the movie Pump Up the Volume and found that they had so much more that I loved. The best Pixies album and in my top 100.
banger alert!
Debaser - 4.5/5 Tame - 4/5 Wave of Mutilation - 4.5/5 I Bleed - 4/5 Here Comes Your Man - 5/5 Dead - 4/5 Monkey Gone to Heaven - 4.5/5 Mr. Grieves - 4/5 Crackity Jones - 4/5 La La Love You - 4/5 No. 13 Baby - 4/5 There Goes My Gun - 4/5 Hey - 5/5 Silver - 4/5 Gouge Away - 4.5/5 The Pixies walked so indie rock could run. They somehow managed to take a wide collage of genres and make them all flow so well together that you don't really realize the genre change until you listen long enough. Here Comes Your Man and Hey already got plenty of plays in my playlists, so it was a no-brainer that the rest of the album would be as excellent as those two were. Overall: 5/5 Favorites: Here Comes Your Man, Hey, Debaser, Monkey Gone to Heaven, Gouge Away
Phenomenal album. Very deserving of multiple listens, with multiple songs I've added to my personal rotation. Raw and gritty, and beautiful in the same style as a car crash.
Classic. Peak Pixies. Easy 5
Fucking absolute banger. Elevated the vibes in the room for like a solid 20 minutes after I finished listening
This is a great early alternative album, with some classics and no real skips. The songs are all over the place that go from screaming lyrics and fast paced instrumentals to songs that are almost a little poppy, but in a good way. Debaser, Here Comes Your Man and Monkey Gone to Heaven are my standout tracks.
Álbum clássico e importante do Rock alternativo. Muito influente para bandas dos anos 1990. Muito bem produzido e com ótimos instrumentos e vocais. QoA Adonis New.
Amazing album, huge Pixies fan now. They clearly influenced either directly or indirectly a ton of bands and music that I loved in the 90s/00s growing up. And not only that but these songs are GREAT examples of the style. Love Wave of Mutilation, I Bleed, Debaser, really all the tracks are good, short and sweet bites of goodness, No 13 Baby, Hey, etc.
WAHEY, one of my fave albums. Reminds me of flatting.
All time classic
5 stars Oh man, what an album. I was first introduced to Pixies during the lead up to their 2004 reunion at Coachella. My cooler older brother got into them while I was still into punk and ska. He would mock me and I was close-minded, didn’t want to give Pixies a try. My older brother mockingly told me to listen to “Mr. Grieves” because it started out “ska.” I ended up liking it and moving on to the rest of the album. I loved it and have continued to do so til this day. I described Surfer Rosa as perfect in its imperfection. Well Doolittle perfected the perfect imperfection. While the second half of the album has some odd ball tracks, it works together well to form a cinematic masterpiece. Catchy, noisy, weird, and cool. This album’s got it all.
A few songs into this album, I thought that this was easily a 4 for me, with the potential to be a 5 after a few relistens. A few more songs in, I realized that I was really enjoying the album and that it was a 5 for me. Everything landed well on my ears!
I haven't listened to Doolittle in a while, but it was a really important album for me growing up. And, of course, it's hugely influential for the entire alternative rock scene.
100 percent classic. No skips. Inspired a decade of music, you cannot go wrong
Top 10 all time! 1. Debased 2. Hey! 3. Monkey Gone To Heaven 4. Wave Of Mutilation 5. Gouge Away …all of them!
Love this album. Close to perfect to my ears.
what a banger - so many greats. "debaser", "wave of mutilation", "here comes your man", "monkey gone to heaven", "hey", "gouge away". classic, seminal indie rock.
Revolutionary album. Quintessential pixies.
Such a fun album. Pre-grunge alt rock. Such an influential band, and this one really shows those influences in spades. Easy win here.
primal, raw, weird, but at the same time approachable and catchy, really my gateway drug the tracks play very well with that weird dynamic tension, establishing a contained sound that eventually explodes, mixing primal emotions with moments of really technical musicianship the lyrics have a surreal, nervous, and impulsive tone and are capable of creating images that evoke animalistic and bodily emotions in a unique way, all this beneath simple, catchy, and truly accessible melodies
Can very clearly hear the influence they had on Nirvana. This is such a great album and cool transition era from hair metal to grunge. Not sure why, but Hey will always have me grooving. Front to back, easy listen.
goated chill and interesting
I was starting to think I just didn’t really like the Pixies, but this album was fantastic.
I Love This Album by Pixies
As someone who got killed by 10 million pounds of sludge from New York and New Jersey, I la la love this album. I this this may actually be my most played album of all time, when it really comes down to it. It's always been my ultimate palette cleanser, as weird as that is to say about an album like this. I discovered this album in high school, and while much of the music I liked back then has faded in and out at various points of my ever shifting tastes, Doolittle has always been right there. It's a perfect album to me, because it's comprised of so many different sounds, styles, and moods, but they all coalesce in a strangely gestalt way. It's hard to describe why I love this album so much, other than it's obvious genius and manic performances. Frank Black (or w/e he goes by these days) unleashes some of the most intense vocal performances of modern music history on this album. The songwriting is angular, agressive, and high-concept at times, but also accessible, funny, and straight ahead at others. The whole pot is stirred up to create a perfectly balanced collage of concepts that just hits me in the perfect way. This is another album that's just part of my DNA, so a 5/5 is undeniable.
This is one of those defining albums. I remember listening to it for the first time. I had started to move away from metal and was becoming increasingly alternative. At the time it just felt refreshing and I regretted having spent years listening to Warrant. Now, with time between me and the album it’s still genuinely jaw dropping. Debaser feels fresh and exciting still, Monkey gone to heaven is genuine top 10 songs of all time contention and Here comes my man is like a 60’s classic uncovered. Genuinely era defining stuff
No hay con que darle, es buenisimo!
Grote Pixiesfan hier
10/5. Estifi que j'ai été influencé par cet album.
Plus j'écoute les Pixies plus j'aime ça. Je pense que c'est mon préféré jusqu'à maintenant. Bien aimé Monkey gone to Heaven et Debaser. Amenez-en plus!
Opening track is such a banger. This is fantastic example of the early atl-rock/punk genre that goes underappreciated.
Can't touch it. Closer to a 4 than a 6.
Great energy. Thoroughly enjoyed
Everything is so distilled down to the essential notes that there really isn’t a misplaced moment her
I wanna grow up to be a debaser
The problem with the 80s is that they were too 80s. This list has helped me find the diamonds in the rough — or, more accurately, the rough in the diamonds. This album is one such rough, cool album that 19 year old me should have been listening to in 1989. It brings together the best of the rough sounds of that decade, from X to the Cure to classic R.E.M. to the quirkier tendencies of bands like Was (Not Was). Looking forward, the Pixies anticipate the White Stripes. Great stuff! This is my second listen and it’s better than the first. My friend gave it a 4 so I’m going with 5 so together this earns a well-deserved 4.5. Teamwork 👊
Just brilliant
just a note, I do not know about Pixies or any of their work. So I went in blind. Since I listen to a lot of music, I do have one song liked from a different album of theirs, but honestly I don't remember it very well. I like the vibes of this album a lot. It's weird, wacky and at times aggressive. I feel like this is the most alt an album can get. It also feels like this is what influenced Mitski a lot in her music as other people mentioned! I didn't even think about that--but now honestly I can see it. It also reminds me of Mother Mother's music--they may be influenced by Pixies as well, I wouldn't be surprised if they are. I may listen to more Pixies going forwards since this album is so good! (I'm also a big alt album person).
Classic. I dig these noisy macabre surfy pop nuggets. Rock me, Joe! And shake your butt!
Within the first five seconds of Debaser you know this album is going to be great!
This was great and fun. Couple of iconic songs.
Totally unique for its time. Still sounds fresh and could be new today. Really rate this. 5
Biased maybe, but one of my top 5
Doolittle is a special album. I think Surfer Rosa is great but on Doolittle, everything just seemed to click for Frank Black, Kim Deal and crew. What a way to start things off with Debaser, hooking you right away with that epic bass line. Then they follow it up with Tame and Black shows off just how well he can balance melody with yelps and he mixes in some weirdness with the breathy vocals, he really is great at keeping things interesting. The hits just keep piling on, Wave of Mutilation, I Bleed, Here Comes Your Man, what a run of absolute tracks. This is the album, as a big Modest Mouse fan, you really hear where Isaac Brock took notes on how to play around with yelps and cryptic interesting songwriting. Hey, has always been a favourite of mine, just something about that single shout of Hey! to open it up with yet another clean bass line from deal following shortly after. An absolute gem of an album to close out an already great decade of music in the 80’s. Easy 5 stars
a criticism: Monkey Gone To Heaven isn't as good as The Boys Are Back In Heaven, where the vocal part is from Thin Lizzy.
I would like to amend my other two Pixies reviews to 5s. If there is a shortlist of Great American Bands, Pixies are surely on it.
One of my absolute favorite albums and potentially the one I’ve listened to more than any other. Each song is so unique and memorable on their own but add to the full experience
I was thrilled to see Doolittle on this list, I've loved this album for years! I am not going to be impartial, I am giving it an easy 5 stars. This album is joyous and weird. There's moments that almost sound like different songs being played at the same time. So many albums have been inspired by the Pixies that you can hear the influences, but nothing quite sounds like Doolittle.
Nevermind this monkey, has this human gone to heaven?, because R.E.M. and then the Pixies in consecutive days is a treat. These two bands were collosal in the late 80s setting the template for the alternative rock that ushered in the 90s. The highlights are all the obvious ones like Debaser, Monkey Gone to Heaven, Gouge Away, Here Comes Your Man, Wave of Murilation but all the deep cuts are great too. Saw them live when they reformed, at a festival show, it was so-so, but haven't listened much to their post reunion work but I don't need to because here we have the magic of the Francis / Kim dynamic that won't be topped.
(100/100)
This monkeys gone to heaven
Speaking of ground beefing music
An amazing album.
This album rocks
Good album. Been a favorite for a minute. This monkey is going to heaven.
The last two Pixies albums we heard arrived at times when I didn't have time or energy to write a proper review. Fortunately for me, I've got the time now (though not really the chops, to write a proper review). The Pixies' first five albums are each superb musical statements, and Doolittle is, for me, their greatest work of the five. Every single song stands up to scrutiny; every single song is a gem. I would change nothing about this album. Moreover, on the theory that you can judge an album by the quality of the subsequent covers it inspires, this might be the greatest album ever written due to Wave of Mutilation. From the Pixies own UK Surf version to Grant-Lee Phillip's kinda country version, to Gouge Away's hardcore version, the covers of this song highlight the greatness of the original. Anyway, I'm a fanboi through and through. All the stars for this album.
I first loved this album in high school and I still do. That's no mean feat. While I think Kim Deal is the durable talent in the band, having the unpredictable counterpoint of Black Francis makes magic, see Debaser et al. I think it would be a fun thing to make a playlist of songs with perfect screams in them. Monkey gets included in that playlist for the moment when Black Francis screams "THEN GOD IS SEVEN!"
5/5 - I'd listen to this anytime. It's not perfect, but it's damn good.
su mejor obra sin discusión.
the Joni Mitchell’s Blue of numerological cosmology
It's Doolittle. It's an immediate five stars. Great bass, great guitar, great vocals, great drums, great lyrics. Founded a genre. Been listening to it for thirty years, will probably listen to it for thirty more.
Such a great album. This was so different than anything else when it came out. Love the Pixies.
Pixies – Doolittle (1989) On Day 107, I was completely surprised by this album. While Bossanova felt flat to me early in the challenge, Doolittle is a total "W." It has a structured, grunginess that I definitely recognize from Nirvana, especially on tracks like "Hey" and "Gouge Away." "Here Comes Your Man" was a low-key favorite, along with "Hey," "Gouge Away," and the sleeper hit "No. 13 Baby." The production is consistent and this unique sound of the loud-quiet dynamics kept me engaged the entire time. I know for sure I’ll find even more to love on a relisten. This is a definitive 5/5 experience that gets the second century of this challenge back on track.
This stuff is GREAT
A perfect album.
Yeah! Now this is an album. I knew a few Pixies tracks before but not familiar with this album. The through line to grunge is clear here. And bonus marks because Kim Deal is superb.
Perfect album
Entre lo críptico y lo expansivo. Brillante.
Hits scattered through the album. Enjoyable pace. Low 5
Great start to finish
I’m going back to Doolittle and giving Pixies a low 5, this albums has hit me over the head and surprised me in all the right ways, nobody told me how heavy they were, how interesting they were, it’s been a minor revalation
"Doolittle" is the second studio album by American alternative rock band the Pixies. Alternative rock is the sole Wiki-listed genre. Gil Norton produced the album which resulted in a much polished sound than the Steve Albini-produced debut "Surfer Rosa." The bandmembers included Black Francis (vocals, guitars), Kim Deal (bass, vocals, guitar), Joey Santiago (lead guitar, backing vocals) and David Lovering (drums, vocals, bass). This was their breakthrough album reaching #8 in the UK and #98 in the US but has continued to sell well after its released and over time. The album was an instant critical success especially in Europe and has been cited as one of the key alternative rock albums of the 1980's. A thumping bass, melodic guitar and drums open "Debaser." Forceful lead vocals by Black and whispering echoing vocals by Deal. Layered guitars. Black wants to grew up to be a debaser. Why not? A screeching guitar end in this classic alternative rock song. Drums, a pounding bass and Bkack whispering begin "Tame." Loud guitar strikes and the song goes soft/loud/soft. Nirvana was taking notes and has admitted as much. "Wave of Multitation" also has that same soft/loud/soft dynamic to a lesser extent. A more melodic guitar hook. The song was inspired (so to say) by Japanese businessmen committing murder/suicide by driving their families into the ocean after their business failures. I did not know that. "Here Comes Your Man" is the most pop song on the album. That twangy and familiar guitar. It's not all that happy as the music would lead you to believe as Black sings about the inevitability of a natural disaster like an earthquake. A song that also builds and speeds up. Guitar, drums and bass introduces us to "Monkey Gone to Heaven." Bass-driven with drums. Strings are added. Overlayed guitars. Echoing backing vocals by Deal. And, yes, Joey does rock us with a guitar solo. A song that climaxes as we find out that the devil is six and God is seven. Drummer David Lovering takes over lead vocals in a crooning-Elvis style in "La La Love You." Funky drums. Santiago really rockin' the surf guitar in this one. The album closes with "Gouge Away." A forefront bass and beat. Edgy guitar riffs. It's appropriate they go back to and end with a soft/loud/soft dynamic song. Black with evil vocals in a song about betrayal and Samson and Delilah. Crunchy and melodic guitar riffs, mostly bass driven in two-to-three minute-long songs , layered guitars, tht surf guitar sound, the soft-loud-soft dynamic and surrealistic and weird lyrics. This album is a lot more clear sounding than their debut and is what "the Pixies" sound is to me. Its influences are obvious on the alternative music scene of the 1990's and beyond. It's aged really well and sounded wonderful today. A must have and must listen-to album.
Normally not that into alternative, but this album rocks. Favorite songs: Debaser, Monkey Gone to Heaven
Iconic.
Well, that went hard.
4.8 3x SMF to ATL. 4/2. Old favorite and still classic
This album is solidly in my top 10. spent countless hours listening to this on repeat. And then Hey, is one of my favourite songs. It's just so visceral and dark.
Classic.
Fantastic start, that started to slow towards the end, but I'm on holiday so why not
Favorite pixies album.
Great album
This is really close to 5 stars. Extremely influential. Short, direct, and distinct songs. As far as personal taste is concerned, I really like: Debaser, Monkey gone to heaven, Here comes your man, Mr Grieves, La la love you, Hey, Gouge Away...
Holy shit
Doolittle es una obra maestra del rock, me encanta.
Excelente disco para comenzar !!! ❤️
Always wondered if I'd like them. I do.
One of the greatest albums of all time.
Who knew there was more to The Pixies than Orange Cassidy’s entrance theme?
Goated. One or two mediocre people in my life have really enjoyed this one.
Incredible album, all songs are great, the feel of pre-grunge alternative rock is cemented by their legacy, the energy and chemistry is unmatched. Amazing.
Excellent album
Loved this
This album feels so ahead of its time like mid 90s rock in the 80s. I usually hate albums with a lot of short songs because they’re unable to fully express each song before moving on but this album with like 15 songs in 38 minutes keeps the pace pushing with each song sounding unique and fully developed which I was shocked by.
Equally amazing and inspirational. Best alternative rock album of the 80s.
Since it’s all been said and I can’t justify its brilliance with any new review, here’s just a few random thoughts: More bands should embrace shorter songs. They may have been wary of the production but much as I love their previous records, I think they wear the extra polish well. Doolittle is just one of the most fun albums I own.
First heard debaser while playing skate 3 and then eventually listened to the full album. Changed my fucking life
this is simply the best fucking album of all time. No excuses.
Obviously I knew a few songs on here, but I was quite unfamiliar with the Pixies. What a shame! This is an album, cohesive, loud, personal, hit after hit. One of my favorite discoveries so far.
I’ve almost entirely got 5 star albums this week. I’ve always liked Debaser and the other singles on here but I really should have listened to the rest of their stuff because this has made me realise I do really like them
Znam to! Pixies przedstawil mi moj kolega z Arabii, a czasami z Bangladeszu. Here comes your man - pamietacie ze Tom spiewa to w 500 days of Summer? ja pamietam, a to jeden z najlepszych filmow. Swietna na silownie, do pracy, w autobusie i samochodzie. LUBIE!
Both poppy and heavy as hell, Pixies laid out out the formula for every big alternative hit that would come out in the decade after Doolittle's release. The heaviest cut on here is 'Tame' which sounds like a Nirvana song, with Black Francis' pained howls mirroring Cobain's. The most radio-friendly song is 'Here Comes Your Man', which features a surf guitar riff combined with a happy melody that made the song a hit. The bass playing throughout the album is sublime, even if it isn't all that technical. Kim Deal's basslines are memorable and I'm sure she encouraged many kids to pick up the instrument. 'Debaser' wouldn't be as much of a earworm if it didn't feature Deal's bassline leading the song. This record isn't afraid to get a bit weird, with Francis' yowling delivery and all the surreal lyrics and themes you can find here. Alternative music wouldn't be the same without this album.
I’ve always liked the opening track Debaser the most. 38 minute run time is a sweet spot. This album rules. Easy 5/5
Fav Songs: Debaser, Here Comes Your Man, Monkey Gone To Heaven, Hey, Gouge Away Least Fav: Silver 9.4/10
Two Pixies in a row? This one is fucking straight up uncut mainline plasma energy freaky awesome. Imagine the scene for just one song, "Tame" 'Okay, we need more tiny breathy baby doll laugh noises...great great, now, Frank, scream like your soul is being removed by a sadistic dentist...nice, nice, now hit the drums as hard as possible while we turn the guitars to 11; perfect, that's Tame'
An incredible album - one of my all-time favourites!!
Head and shoulders above everything else in the alternative rock-a-verse.
So weird, so fucking good
Part of the soundtrack of my life!! Love this band & everything they do. This is a absolute classic!
Mood lifter
Stone cold classic
One of my all-time favorites. I've listened to this for over a decade and it always fits just right. Frank Black's vocals mixed over Kim Deals; the insane instrumentation on the punkier ones; La La Love You; Monkey's Gone To Heaven; mf' Here Comes Your Man! Good God, Steve Albini and Pixies mixed for a perfect combination here. No Pixies album quite lives up for me. RIP Albini. RIP Pixies.
Not sure which is the better album, this or Surfer Rosa. But I do wish the Pixies hadn’t flown under my radar back in the day. They maintain a grittiness without sounding sloppy. It’s a finished product, but not an overly polished mass marketed stuff. Kim Diehl’s vocals elevate it so much over a lot of the other heavy-ish alternative rock of the era. Just a fantastic piece of work.
The perfect 90s indie rock album. Hooky, catchy, and addictive, but rough and raw with jangly edges. So great.
Simply one of the very greatest, most influential albums ever.
The best to do it.
Contains only great ideas and only for exactly as long as they remain fully great. An alt-rock miracle
I'm always listening to this album. it's seismic. every piece of it is etched so hard into my brain. When we listened to Surfer Rosa literally yesterday I talked about how much it establishes that great pop songwriting can always be inches away from plunging into more anguished, "ugly" (for lack of a better word, since this is one of the most beautiful albums ever) wells of human expression. I think about how "No. 13 Baby" kicks off with this discordant construction where every element of the song seems to be fighting each other with explosive energy and how it just floats off into the most gorgeous ride off into the sunset. I think about how the delicacy of Frank's vocals on "Wave of Mutilation" are underlined by these sludgy clouds of guitar chords. I think about one of my all time favorite drum parts on "I Bleed", with a tight rhythm section as Kim + Frank fall in and out of sync with each other. The modulation of "Mr. Grieves" from this weird ska skeleton into a jumpy sing-songy jaunt into a swinging barn burner. I simultaneously have these songs burned into my memory and I'm constantly discovering new angles to them. Everything is this insane product of the alchemy between these four musicians. There are many albums out there that I've had the luck of falling in love with, but year on year Doolittle separates more and more from the pack as something increasingly singular and significant. The most annoying thing I've ever done is watch Un Chien Andalou synced with this and be cosmically moved. Gouge Away is the name of one of my favorite bands of these days, just one of the many pieces of shrapnel from this explosive masterpiece.
Just one of the great albums of all time. Absolute gold from start to finish
good
Timeless in my opinion
Yeah, it's a 5 star album. No one else like the Pixies and that run from Come On Pilgrim to Trope Le Monde is a thing of beauty.
Aunque ya la escuche, me parece increible
Frank Black needs his dick sucked for this album
Great album, listened before many times, lived seeing them live a few years back. 4 all time classics (imo) on it in debaser, WofMutiluation, HCYM and Hey
I love this album. So influential - the use of dynamics, the tone, the performances are all outstanding. And excellent songwriting as well.
I * love* this album. Doolittle is a lot of things: the blueprint for the 90's, a successful commercial break-through, even a punk album (kind of). Doolittle is a like a 2D spectrum defined by points at "alternative", "pop", and "punk". And over the course of 15 incredible songs, throughout a brisk, and incredibly aesthetically pleasing, 38 minutes and 38 seconds, this entire spectrum is pretty much fully explored. Debaser, Wave Of Mutilation and Monkey Gone To Heaven are alt-rock perfection. Here Comes Your Man and La La Love You are delightfully catchy, sugar-coated pop songs. And Tame and Crackity Jones are jangle punk explosions. And a lot of the spaces in-between end up as anxious art-pop on songs like No. 13 Baby and There Goes My Gun. Honestly, some of the coolest songs here are where Pixies find weird little nooks of their sound that really hit out of no-where and tie in super nicely. Mr. Grieves pulls off some dub influence, and Silver pulls off some noisy acid country. As a whole, the disparate sounds here work as a coherent sound. And it's because of a couple things. Firstly, the performances here are amazing. These songs are carried by a real manic energy. And the song lengths generally keep low, which leaves you wanting more. And then, the vital completion of this hat trick is that each song gives you a *little* of what the previous song did. Until, at the end of things, when Gouge Away grinds along just long enough to leave you satisfied. This whole album is pretty much perfect. There's pop sugar, alt jangle, and punk fire. And Pixies have the finesse to take their sound to the stratosphere and execute everything here to an *incredible* level.
Laced with something, fucking incredible
I'm a massive pixies fan so my opinion is as subjective as it can be: it's legendary.
No skips, all bangers
A noisy alternative rock landmark. I think I'd forgotten how much fun this one is, but when "Debaser" kicks off I get pretty quickly swept up into its unhinged energy. Some other standouts are "Wave of Mutilation" and "Monkey Gone to Heaven." Just a good time, and apparently pretty influential on the decade that followed it.
Great album. At the time this was a top 5 all timer. Probably top 20 now
Obviously 5 stars
Another album I was familiar with, and its banger after banger. Favourite track: a tough choice, but I love Monkey Gone to Heaven.
Great album, definitely needs to be on this list.
brillant!
5/5. This album is peak early indie rock. takes everything established on Surfer Rosa and just runs with it to make some great songs. Banger after banger.
What can I say. The Pixies, along with the Melvins and a few others, invented 90s alternative music. Try to imagine a rock world where, say, Poison dominates. The Pixies wouldn’t make sense to the average listener. I’ve always admired the bravery and honesty of bands like the Pixies and their audience.
That bass rhythm at the beginning of the album ("Debaser"), hooked me immediately (all of the other bass parts in the album are just as prominent). The whole album is so high energy and catchy with the right amount of dark undertones for me. I especially loved "Monkey Gone to Heaven". A lot of my favorite music has definitely been influenced by Pixies, so I love this.
Incredible record.. Honestly a no-skip situation, every song has it's unique and despite breaking a lot of rules, nothing sound obnoxious (something that happens often when artists try to be to avantgarde imo). A big part for me, is that the songs are nice and short, they don't overstay their welcome. So if you don't fuck with a particular song, it's not to long. Favorite songs: -Monkey Gone To Heaven -Tame -Mr. Grieves -Debaser
I prefer Surfer Rosa, but this album still gets the 5 star nod from me.
A legendary followup to what was already an impressive debut. A little catchier and more diverse than Surfer Rosa, it still manages to surprise yet balance the off-kilter and noisier elements well. Still just an absolute crazy joy to listen to. One of the finest records of the 80s and absolutely influenced the direction of the 90s.
Already in my top 5 best albums of all time. Came out just before I got to college and I wore the album out repeatedly. For me there's before Doolittle and after Doolittle. After this album came out I don't believe I ever bought another Michael Jackson or Phil Collins record again (and I still love those artists, too!)
Y'ever notice how during the chorus of "Monkey Gone to Heaven" Kim is pretty clearly saying 'this much is going to happen,' re-framing Frank's metaphysical ramblings as inevitable apocalyptic prophecy?
debaser is on the skate 3 soundtrack and wave of mutilation is on wakeboarding unleashed featuring shaun murray so i'm biased here song i went back to first after first full listen: debaser
Really great album. Lots of experimental surfer inspired punk rock. Not too long. Punchy and grungy production. Some good hooks, too. Definitely an album ahead of its time. 5/5
This album is one of those that make you go "wait, this is allowed in music??" And indeed, it's tough to overestimate its impact: There's hardly a 90s rock band that didn't pick up a trick or two from this album. The songwriting is straight up genius. I don't use this word often in my reviews. A combination of catchy digestible structures combined with unique, bizzare experiment that work. There are more than a few songs in this album that are timeless, and even the worst songs are still interesting in some way. The music and the lyrics both kind of put a spell: They sound significant and unforgettable ("if man is 5, and the devil is 6..."), but then, they kind of slip away. My only gripe is the female back vocals that feels like it's pasted next to the mix rather than being a true part of it.
una obra de arte hecha musica
One of my top 10 albums. Must have.
First Pixies album I've ever listened to . Didn't realise how influential they were
Easy 5!! One of my all time faves
Sometimes dark and visceral, sometimes bright and poppy, but always energetic and constantly walking a tightrope between subdued and chaotic. And so many hooks!
Electric guitar showcase, great bops
Perfection
Wish I had gotten into the Pixies during their early heyday. Some great albums out of that time frame
No other album sounds like this. It influenced countless albums that came after. I love it and always will love it.
I don't have enough superlatives for this record. It is without question one of the best and most influential records released in the 80s. The landscape of popular (and not so popular) 90s and aughts rock music is completely different without Doolittle. It is also an amazingly diverse collection of songs that always sound like Pixies music. It's nice that they have gotten their laurels in recent years, but I'm constantly amazed that most people my age still don't know who they are or what they did. I saw them with Weezer a few years ago and the place was half empty for Pixies. My friends asked me who the opener was and I couldn't ever respond. Long live Frank Black and Kim Deal
If it wasn't for Silver - sorry, Kim - this would be a perfect record. Besides the one "eh", there are many "wows" on the tracklist. I didn't get the Pixies for years until one day, I sort of forced myself to get familiar. It's the same thing I felt for Pavement: too out there and weird for what I could handle. It turns out I was just a pussy and this is actually great stuff. Matter of fact without the Pixies, Pavement wouldn't be what they are, nor would many other popular 90s indie bands become a thing. There's a weirdness that shakes me within Doolittle. At first, the screams, short run-times and unorthodox song structures pushed me away, but as time folded over, they only made me come back for more. "I bleed" (9/10, 5/5 on this scale)
very good
This has been a favorite since I was in high school.
