Honestly did not find many songs that interesting. 5/10
Three discs. Too much for something I listen to as background music. One and a half was enough
Got bored. Was never a fan of the Byrds, so I'm not shocked this isn't my thing.
Not terrible but no idea why this makes the 1001 list.
John sinatra
Plinky plonky honky tonky whitey shitey cack tracks. Inoffensive, uninteresting. Next!
I was super sad to be so bored by this.
Never heard of Gene Clark before today but I am always excited to listen to a new artist. The album started out fine. Nothing ground breaking, but it kept my interest. My mood began to sour about halfway or so through the record when I realized I was getting bored with what I was hearing. Unfortunately, it never got back to that beginning feeling. 2/5
I'm sorry, this was just boring. I don't understand how this is important.
2.5, revisit for mellow CSNY vibe, mix w some pink Floyd
This is about as mediocre an album as I have heard in this project. Nothing about it stands it to me in a “you’ve gotta hear this!” way. Average mellow 70s rock music with a vaguely country twinge. Mostly plodding tempo. There is a track called “True One” near the end that has some nice guitar work. But overall I am not impressed.
Pleasant enough for a casual listen. Not particularly memorable for me, though there is definitely something there that I think I missed. A little country-style rock clearly influenced by Gram Parsons and the other members of the Byrds. I just didn’t get it the first time around. 2 stars (will probably go back to reevaluate)
I firmly believe that "Gene" is one of the greatest names of all time. It invokes all the down-home folksiness of a small-town shopkeep, while still delivering the phonic humour with that HARD G. That's not even getting into the root name of Eugene. I am primed to like this record as shimmering recollections of Gene Snitsky punting a baby into row 4 dance across my neural synapses. I am once again like 20 records behind as I made a pilgrimage to the Maritimes with a grumpy baby and I aged myself about 10 years in the process. Mix that in with borderline dangerous amounts of donair sauce consumed and my IQ might've dropped a few dozen points. Maybe that will help with enjoying most of the tripe on this list. I once clicked a guy's profile on this site, and he had completed it and had an AVERAGE rating of 4.35. Truly the world's biggest music fan. I, however, sit at a steely 2.40 and am clearly talking about anything but this record... "No Other" is fine, but I find myself continually asking, is this really one of the 1001 most towering achievements in the history of recorded music? I feel like I'd find out my great-uncle recorded this in the 60's and would be mildly impressed. This isn't bringing anybody to their knees in reverence. Maybe it is. Whatever. Gene? You drive a hard bargain. I'll grab a couple of those little satchels of peanuts and a lottery ticket. Here's 2.5. Keep the change 2-2.5 HIGHLIGHTS: The eyes, the eyes, the eyes of fruit flies

Forgettable. I'm sure if I were able to give it the proper attention there were some good nuggets in there, but nothing stood out. Sounded a little like Robert Plant at times.
There’s a phenomenon specific to the NFL where a player can play themselves out of the Hall of Fame. A previously great quarterback will overstay their time in the league by a few too many years, and the lasting image is of a washed guy, down three possessions, taking too many sacks trying to throw their team back into the game. Russell Wilson is currently doing this. That’s how I felt listening to these songs. I liked them, then I waited for them to go somewhere, and they all just kinda stalled. That’s fine for “Ambulance Blues” or “Desolation Row,” when they’re outliers on the album in terms of length. But all these were a few minutes too long. Highlights were the opener and “True One.” 2.5/5
I do not understand why many of these albums are on here. I'm going to be stricter with my ratings going forward.
It was good as a background music, but I literally cannot remember any song a day later even though I listened to this album 3 times,
70s country, folk rock. Psych elements I don't particularly enjoy.
I agree more with the contemporary critics I think. Didn't quite get this one.
I have a hard time imagining anyone in 1971 excitedly asking their friends to come over and listen to the new Gene Clark album. And, outside of this group, I’ll probably forget to mention to anyone that I listened to it. Not that it’s bad. It just isn’t the type of music that puts air in my tires.
No matter how much I try, Country music just does not sit right in my ears
Niet zo bijzonder
2/11/26. Enjoyable country rock. Really liked the guitar work on this, but otherwise was pretty neutral on it overall.
Not bad, just pretty fucking boring. Not a COMPLETE dud but for most of it i was waiting for it to end. Back half was better than the front
Man, I love the Byrds but Gene Clark’s solo album just didn’t do it for me.
I read up about Gene, Byrds etc. Album was good without any stand out track though
Maso
really kinda boring country... got nothing outta listening to this. i love the direction of the album cover tho!!!
This album was so dull that at times I forgot I was even listening to music. As I am listening back to the songs, No Other is a fine song by itself with interesting guitar work, but in the context of the album doesn't stand out enough. Just another boring folky album on this list.
Uninteresting country music.
Remarkably dull. Not a fan of country overall, and the same with most gospel. This was not an irritant, so I won't throw it a 1. But it really could be a 1 for me.
meh. fine, just forgettable
"Oh hey finally a good song on this album." *Checks phone* "Oh it's just playing similar music now."
The stuff that sounds like Gram Parsons is not great, but the psychedelic rock stuff like the title track is a lot cooler, but the entire thing is a little overdramatic for me and very forgettable.
😳, love the byrds, this just aight
Not really my thing but I can see something in there.
Mehhhh
Not bad but kind of forgettable, would rather listen to the Byrds
Really enjoyed this
I truly tried to give this one a chance. I liked the jangle of the Byrds, and when that sound was popular in the mid-80s, I loved the bands that incorporated that particular guitar tone and sound from The Replacements, The 3’Oclock, the Bangles and Red Kross, the DBs and Chris Stamey, Don Dixon and R.E.M. Gene is a solid songwriter and a very good vocalist. But as for this record, the songs never shift out of low gear. There is no variety and although the songs are pleasant, they don’t captivate and that certainly don’t have the spark- that certain je ne sais quo- that connects with the listener. Instead of enveloping your mind and transporting you to another place on the planet, you are left, for the entirety of the record, waiting at the station. A shame really. 3/5
rating: 2.5/5
A very classically mid 70s album. I did no research on why it's as popular as it is besides it just sounding like another 70's yacht rock album. It's okay, I'd listen to it again. 5/10
OK, good lyrics, relaxing
Very dull. Really not a fan.
Absolut nicht mein Genre, aber so paar Momente hatte das schon
++: No Other, Lady of the North +: Life's Greatest Fool, Silver Raven, From a Silver Phial +-: Some Misunderstanding, The True One -: Strength of Strings 5,5/10
..
It wasn’t bad, but I just couldn’t get into even one track. I do like the cover art though.
Ok. I wouldn't listen to this if it was not on this list. ★★
So dull that I had no opinion on it, and so middle-of-the-road I had no vocabulary to describe it. Singer-songwriter with high production, maybe? Washed over me without leaving a mark.
When this album started playing on expected this to be one of those country like albums I couldn't sit through in its entirety. However I was able to do it m, did not enjoy it though. Better than Neil Young
I don’t know why I needed to listen to this. Very 70’s. Very forgettable.
bad and boring and lame country music nice 1920ies cover though: does not fit to the music
Boring.
Moderately enjoyable. Normal American Folk album. I don't feel inspired to say anything about it at all.
Inoffensive soft classic rock. Strength of strings was the only song that had me going to check the title. Won't be revisiting.
Gene Clark was a founder member the Byrds, but left after various disputes in 1966, and spent the next decade or so in various collaborations and solo projects. This album from 1974 is a bit of a hodge podge of country, folk, soft rock, jazz and gospel, and the lyrics are similarly diverse (and very possibly drug inspired). Apparently it bombed at the time, and in retrospect it’s interesting rather than essential.
Boring ass country album, just let it play as I ignored it and did other things. Thankfully inoffensive
I really don't like country sounds. I do like the Neil Young folky stuff though.
Once again, another one that’s not my thing.
I really wanted to like this album more than I did - it had a promising start but became redundant quickly
2 out of 5. Something new, little slow but not bad for backfround music. Crazy backstory in the Wikipedia article!
Soft country.
It was alright, some bits felt very pink floyd like. Generally I wouldn't call it the most memorable album ever, very 70s rock, lots of solos but nothing that really stood out.
I dig some of the bluesy elements but overall this was not my cup of tea. It was too slow and too country for me.
4/10
Very bland
Folk/country with some ok instrumentation. As mid as that genre can get.
Madaoigual
Not for me.
Pleasant enough album, just absolutely nothing in it which caught my ear.
not for me.
Favorites: Strength Of Strings, Lady Of The North
This felt Byrds adjacent. Sorta had a country flavor but with some of the good ol 1960s tossed in. Was neither bad nor good for me, just very meh.
One or two interesting tracks but nothing more here.
Really had high hopes for this album. Was hoping for much more.
A lot of the production harkens to the horrible “country-politan” of the 70’s. At this point his best music was behind him. I’d like to hear a stripped down version of these songs because I enjoy his voice and many of his songs.
Its fine, but I don't feel his voice is very engaging and it makes it all rather mundane.
Passed me by and did not engage me
Pretty boring.
Some alright tracks here but pretty slow and unexciting. 2.5 goin down.
2/5
I don't think I've ever come across Gene Clark, so had no expectations other than I saw 70s and rock and was hopeful. I felt like this delivered 80s soft adult contemporary and was moderately unimpressed.
Haven't heard his solo work before. At first I thought this album isn't great but the 2nd half had some nice songs. Still, pretty underwhelming 2/5
2.5 The first half of this was actually really pleasant singer-songwriter stuff. The second half gets really self-indulgent and navel-gazy and I just wasn’t on board with that.
Uninteresting. Not bad for background ambience I suppose, but nothing memorable.
Nothing that REALLY stood out to me on first listen
I've never heard of Gene Clark...and it was...fine. I didn't hate it, but nothing worth writing home about. No songs really stuck out as good or terrible for me. It reminded me of something tho, but couldn't put my finger on it.
Never heard of this artist before. I do like country music, but it's more outlaw country than country rock. After listening to the album, I can safely say it's not for me.
This was rather unremarkable in my honest opinion. The songwriting felt banal. The sound was kind of uninteresting too. I feel almost bad saying this because I can tell that Gene tried hard. But I just don’t vibe with it and it didn’t click.
Got slightly better after the first couple of country songs but not for me unfortunately. 2/5
Periaatteessa voisi toimia koska tunnistan monia asioita joista pidän. Mutta oliko fiilis oikea kuunnella tätä? Ei, ei tänään.
Hey guys biggest Byrds hater here once again complaining about how many albums by them and their solo members were included on this list. I am happy to say that this quote has brought a smile to my face: "it was largely ignored or lambasted by critics and was a commercial failure; the studio time and cost were seen as excessive and indulgent. The record label, Asylum Records, did not promote the album, and by 1976 had deleted it from their catalog. Clark never recovered from the failure of the album". And don't forget his OTHER album on this list said: "Like all of his post-Byrds records, it did very poorly on the US charts." It's almost like we didn't need to include over 10 (If I remember correctly I think it was 13) Byrds related album. Ok rant over, time to listen. What a surprise it is another boring forgettable 70's kind of country kind of psych album. However, this time the more rock oriented song, No Other, is the standout boring tune. Nevermind, that 8 minute track was pretty painful. In the grand scheme of the Byrds' extending listening universe this one isn't as bad as some of the others, but it is still really boring and didn't deserve a spot on this list. mid 2.
< the Beatles
Nah
Not my style, kind of garbage
The best I can say is that I did not hate it.
This was fine. I probably won't revisit it but I wasn't mad about listening to it
I cant really think of anything clever to say about this album. It reminded me of a cross between the beach boys and... Dylan maybe?
Really enjoyed the first song but was kinda disappointed by the rest of it.
After my 2nd day in a row listening to a country album: I'm going to shoot myself
2.5 - Meh
Rescato algo de sazón en toda la cosa. Lo que no rescaté fueron las ganas de escucharlo. Nada memorable, un meh absoluto. Nota: 2.3
Another album where I quite enjoyed it musically, but the overall vibe was a bit depressing, and Gene's voice droned on a bit
It was alright but it wasn't for me
Never realised the connection between Gene Clark and CSN&Y. Never heard any of his music either so was eagerly anticipating listening to this album. It is pleasant enough but little in common to my ears with anything done singularly or collectively by CSN&Y. OK CSN&Y do stray into Country at times but that is my least favourite repertoire of theirs. This album unfortunately has much to much of that Country stuff. 2/5 9/2/25
CBF. This was not very good. "One of the greatest albums ever made.."?. Into a drink coaster or ashtray perhaps. Two.
liked songs: No Other, Not a big fan of Clark's voice. It's very competent music, but nothing groundbreaking. Not really for me. 2
Title track was good but the rest of it was quite meh. Didn't click with me.
Unremarkable
WHEN WILL THIS RABBIT HOLE OF MID DAD ROCK END??? In all seriousness the album was fine. Nothing stood out so it garners a two. (Really being creative over 'ere). Anyway, lets hope SidledsGunnar blesses us with a banger christmas album.
Deserved the negative press, so monotone and dull
Stylistically not my thing
Artiste inconnu. =>2/5
Pretty average not gonna lie. Was disappointed with this as I liked his last album on this project. Never mind.
Boomer
Some of it was really good. Others more like old country..
One good song - a bit Neil Young like
I don't know but this sort of drifted past me. I didn't engage much with it. I might, given the story around it give it another go when I've got some time on my hands but at the moment it scores low. Maybe I'm like David Geffen.
Tiene dos temas buenos, pero en general no me deja nada, un álbum pálido.
Liked no other and silver raven but the rest not really for me
It improved slightly for me at track 3 but just not my thing.
What, another Radiohead album?! 43 minutes from only 8 tracks was the first thing I noticed and when the album began with a country twang, I wondered what kind of journey we'd be on. Sadly, outside of a slight foray into funk on No Other, I found it a pretty middle of the road collection of country rock ballads. Some nice production and the odd interesting idea but not enough to make me revisit it.
Not for me.
There were a few tracks on here that I did enjoy a pretty decent amount. The rest was fine, but not much else other than one or two tracks I may return for
Hmmm. This alt-country stuff is supposed to be my wheelhouse, but I find this pretty ‘blah’. Maybe the roots of the music I still love is in there, and thanks to gene clark for that, but I’m going to keep looking ahead and not behind on this one.
After reading an out this album I really wanted to like it and here were moments that were beautiful but overall it faded into the background. It could be because I tried to listen to it at a time when I was on a Bon Iver kick and this was more straight or something. Good to know this exists and I’ll revisit one day.
Very boring
Pleasant but again, was mostly just above average background music and not something I expect will send me on much of a journey. 2.5
Not really for me
I know there are various Byrds albums in the 1001, and, despite being 250+ in, I still haven't heard any of them. The Byrds aren't a band I've ever been particularly inclined to explore, new wave/ art rock/ post punk fan that I am (apparently those are the accepted terms). Anyway the point is, I would have preferred to judge this after hearing Gene Clark's contributions to the Byrds, first. But never mind. For my taste, it's very... conventional. Nothing particularly to dislike, and undoubtedly melodic and well-constructed. But this type of thing doesn't do a lot for me. Should it be more widely regarded as a classic? Other reviewers think so. Maybe. It didn't seem worse than some pretty well-known Americana from the 70s. Just not my thing. 5 out of 10, but I've got to differentiate somehow.
It’s good but a bit vanilla. And I love vanilla. But this is not a rich creamy vanilla. It’s an icy low fat nilla
En keskittynyt, ei jäänyt mitään mieleen. Aikalaiskriitikoiden kanssa mietin samaa: oliko kaiken studioajan arvoista? Olisiko nopeampi työskentely, pikaisemmat ratkaisut ehkä tuoneet tähän yllättävyyttä? Tuntuu, että on hinkattu kaikki kulmat pois.
Näitä biisejä jää ihan kuuntelemaan, kekseliäitä pikku variaatioita. Biisien ylimitoittaminen ja soiton pehmeä laahavuus liittyvät vuosikertaan. 2,5
Was a bit country for me
Rather boring. It's a shame because there are moments where it feels like it could be so much better. Overall the number one fault of the album is that the songs just aren't memorable at all.
Meh. It’s an okay album but it bounces all over in style and sound elements. In this case, the album isn’t very cohesive. Overall, it’s just there and rather bland.
Not my bag, baby.
Maybe when I'm old, decrepit, and have nothing better to do than sew quilts, I'll feel like listening to this. Until then, keep it the hell away from me.
not my cup of tea
Gear: Meze 109 PRO Artwork: 👨🏻🎨🎨🗿 Mix: 🧏♂️📏🤷♂️ Musik: 🤠🎭🥱 Wertung: 👨🏻🎨👨🏻🎨/5
Sounds like an 80s movie road trip interlude
Another Gene Clark album? REALLY? Admittedly on the last one there was the bit Gilmour clearly got inspired by for 'Wish you were here'. But another one? OK I prefer this one, it's more varied and I think some of the songs are a lot stronger, and it isn't just country rock like the other one, he's definitely moved with the times and sounds better for it. Still a 2 though.
spannend, melancholisch.groovig.
It was fine not good not really bad but just ok
I only like no other. 2.5
An album where I didn't know what to expect with each song, which can be fun but here it just felt jumbled.
another in interesting classic rock album
Singer songwriter, Mag ich gerne hören Sehr beruhigend.
Boring when it’s not country, and aggravating when it is.
A lot of country twang. Not for me.
Competent but I didn't enjoy it much
So so. Does not really do it for me.
Listenable but not my thing. 2*
Yawn…
It's folksy rock. Don't remember a single song. The dude's got talent, but doesn't really leave an impression.
Not for me
not great. 1.7/5 listened 2x
Not sure why this on this list to be honest. Is it good. Yes . Is it amazeballs. No. You could play this amongst any mid60s to 70s American songwriting and I wouldn't be able to pick it out. It's like a good meal at an airport. 2/5. Well executed but Forgettable
I don't know if this is country or rock, kind of forgettable to me.
I wanted to like this album, really. I could hear that great effort was put into the songwriting, the engineering, the production, and the performances, but other than the folky psychedelic track of "No Other", the album seems rather dull. The album is mostly a mix of various forms of soulful country rock, folk rock, and just generally the California singer songwriter sound of the 1970s. No better than 100 or more other records that came out during that decade in these genres. On the other hand I am not a fan of this sound from The Eagles or Neil Young during this era either. I find all of it rather tedious. If you are a big fan of the aforementioned artists perhaps you will enjoy this more than I did. Not a bad record, but not a special one either. I enjoyed it more when he was a bit more experimental.
A markedly uninteresting album. Next.
actually nothing really wrong with this, but just pales in comparison to the other 3s I've rated recently
The acoustic sounds are very nice. The lyrics are cool too. Meh.. I don’t know what it is about “song writers” that I don’t like. And what kind of a genre is that anyway? 2 stars.
Several times I have asked myself about the criteria for compiling this list. Once again it is the case when listening to this album by Gene Clark. For some reason someone things it is important that I should listen to the weakest solo album made by Gene Clark before I die. It is not really bad, but just boring compared to earlier of his albums and as well all the albums by the Byrds when he was still in that band. Strange..
ok, but nothing more
boring. yawning. but at least the album cover is pretty.
Folky sound and pleasant songs
Totally forgettable to me.
Levyn parhaat biisit on ihan viihdyttäviä ja niitä kuuntelee mielellään. Levy kokonaisuutena painuu kuitenkin kategoriaan ei-tarvitse-kuunnella uudelleen.
Ihan ok genressään. Tylsähkö, mutta missään nimessä ei häirinnyt. Kuitenkin keskitason alapuolella
Calm : )
Meh
Meh. Didn't really do anything for me, and I generally like this era/genre.
some fantastic lines tho could i write poetry to this? n
A couple of dope songs, but otherwise this album left my memory right after listening.
Pretty good, but not for me.
"No Other" was the best on this album. Special shout out to "Silver Raven" as well. Dare I say, reminds me of Fleetwood Mac?
Nicht meine Richtung
Liked Silver Raven, No Other, Strength of Strings. A lot of this record is too country for my taste. Absolutely awful cover artwork. Looks like an elementary school art project and if I just saw this in a record shop there's no way I would give it a second glance.
Not really for me
Not bad but not my jam.
OK, but didn't inspire me
More boring folk music.
*yeehaaws sadly*
Sort of generic 70's rock. Didn't find it particularly interesting.
It has some nice songs on it. I don't feel compelled to come back to it -- didn't grab me that much -- but not bad.
Country rock - very croon-y
Very Neil Young, but I don't really enjoy Neil Young. Slow, folky, meh
This was fine, just not my style. Too country for me.
Mild 60s rock with poor man’s Neil Young gestures
Didn't really register wasn't my cup of tea. I keep telling my 15 year son that he needs to start drinking tea but why, he doesn't have to, why don't I leave him alone. I guess I feel he maybe missing out and want him to experience the greatness that is Tea, but maybe I'll cut him some slack.
Not my thing.
😴
Fikk kje med meg så masse, men va vel greit
Very boring really. Not bad, just not great. The most popular song on here, "No Other" is no better than a 3.5 star song. Overall the album is probably 2.5 - 3, mainly just because it's boring. It has no place on a "must listen" list, so I'm rounding down. 2 stars.
First song was awful - what an opener! After that it was kind of average.
It’s a bit one note, and some tracks are quite similar. I didn’t love it, but it is surprising to read that it got dumped on as bad as it did. In that vein though, also surprising to hear any redux reviews hyping it as much as the write up indicates.
quiet. thoughtful. retrospective. nothing that describes me at all. What can I say? It feels dated. I'm not sure what else I should say about it. Oh yeah, it's a fourth studio album. There are a ton of third and fourth studio albums in here.
It's a mood! First time listen to any of these songs, made it the whole way through but not really my bag.
Some nice bits but not my thing
Pretty boring, feels like it’s trying to mix a bunch of genres but it ends up feeling messy. Also every song is at least 1 min too long. No other was pretty good and strength of strings is a good song to do drugs to but everything else is forgettable
“Strength of Strings” is a keeper, but pretty unremarkable in general. Top 5 in album covers though. I’d hang this on my wall regardless of its lackluster musical composition.
Just some good ole fashioned, boring-ass country.
Yet another singer-songwriter effort on the list that left me flat. Not overly wowed by any of Clark’s attempts at bombast, as the core songwriting is just too stereotypical for the era to grab me at any point.
I have already got around to listening to this today, and I can't really think of anything to say about it. It is what it is, really. 2 / 5 stars, I suppose.
meh, should have left it to the dust bins of obscurity
I listened to this while driving, and Natalie read me something about why this album was considered to be significant, but by the end of the album, I’d already forgotten what that was. 2*
Ok. Not my style or genre
Nothing remarkable
Yawner for me
Lenta noiosa, niente di entusiasmante
I think I'm going insane with the records this project keeps throwing at me. This is fine. It's not revolutionary. I can't imagine it being revolutionary in 1974 either. Horrific album art.
Pretentious and boring. No wonder no one has ever heard of this Gene Clark album. Decent playing by the musicians.
Didn’t hate the vibe, just kind of boring.
A review on this album’s wiki said it “accomplished what Gram Parsons set out to do when he was breaking ground on ‘Cosmic American Music.’” That is patently false. Parsons attempts at spacey country rock, with the Burrito Brothers, Byrds, and his solo work, all are essential and classic listening. This album was not. I did love Ben Keith’s pedal steel playing on track 7. But shoutout to Gene Clark for being an original member of the Byrds, whom I love. And he also gets a star just for writing “I’ll Feel A Whole Lot Better.”
GREAT album...if it is trying to put someone to sleep. I read when this first came out it was a commercial flop and I understand why. Then it got rereleased a few times and became a commercial success. No clue why. The instrumentals are good but Gene has a "trying too hard" vibe to his voice. True One wasn't too bad.
Sounds ok. But not a genre I'm particularly fond of.
Nie zirytował mnie ten album i mogłam go sobie słuchać w trakcie gotowania, ale nudy na pudy, za bardzo country dla mnie.
Listened once, was pretty boring. Like the Gene Clark period with the Byrds, but this was super mediocre.
I feel like this album tries to do too much and therefore has no identity. You have country music at the beginning, then some rock, and then a mix between the two with some pop on top?
Forgettable - not worth my time to review even .
Sounds like the eagles. Easy listening Forgetable
This has some good song on it, but overall it didn't do much for me. I can see why it would appeal to some, but not sure if it's needed on the lost. Cover art is a 0/10 for me.
Life's Greatest Fool: 3/5 Silver Raven: 2,5/5 No Other: ?/5 Strength of Strings: ?/5 From a Silver Phial: ?/5 Some Misunderstanding: ?/5 True One: ?/5 Lady of the North: ?/5 Totaal: /5
Not for me.
Pleasant musically but somewhat boring lyrically/vocally. Transitions from country to progressive folk rock. No Other, strength of strings, true one 2.4
Not a bad album. I prefer the byrds but the Dave quality makes it a good 2.5 stars
Kinda just fine.. some songs caught my ear and were slightly interesting, but many just didn’t do much in terms of lyrical or instrumental content. 4/10
I've ended up listening to this loads - not because I massively like it, but because I keep listening to it and then not actually writing anything. It's quite nice, not unpleasant to listen to, somewhere between rock and country. The kind of music you'd get if you put a cowboy hat on one of the lower energy REM albums, or if you dialled down the talent from the Eagles by 10-15%. Much more country at the very beginning and the end than it is during the middle. 2/5, fine.
Pretty typical of the country rock of the era. Some of it worked. This one doesn't.
For a guy who played with the Byrds, a few of these songs sounded like he was copying the Eagles. Another questionable album on this list.
Any other.
tfw you go round that kid from school's house for a slightly awkward dinner and afterwards their mildly odd uncle produces a guitar and suggests a sing-along, then they all warble and clap to some very odd hymns you've never heard before, and then their eyes on you are gleaming
Lady of the North was an okay song but most of it was forgettable. Not my style.
Nothing good and nothing bad to say about this. Very average country/ballad songs. The sort of thing you would hear in a doctors waiting room. Nothing offensive or challenging.
eh. like low 2.5, it’s just the same as everything else
Nice rhythm section
Meh
Not really my thing
Will get No Other listens. Awful lot of country/hip hop/R&B filler in here isn’t there?
Quite liked the title track, otherwise it was terrible.
Think I almost fell asleep listening to it.
Nothing stands out particularly. Sorry Gene.
After the first two tracks that have a countryish flair I was still onboard...and then the rest of the album comes along. One star each for Life's Greatest Fool and Silver Raven, the latter feeling like it is just waiting to be used in a film soundtrack somewhere...but the rest, just not quite my thing.
Not my taste at all, was quite bored. However, it was quite relaxing music that sounded nice.
I heard maybe 2 decent songs that I wouldn’t mind listening to again: Life’s Greatest Fool and True One. Otherwise, the album is very unremarkable.
Half rock, half Country. It was ok, lightly enjoyable but uninteresting.
Not really bad but there is nothing to catch my interest.
This album looks like a hard turn from the metal week I've been enjoying so far. The collage style cover art is not drawing me in but we shall see. I'm immediately put off by the opening song, Life's Greatest Fool. Am I in for some old-timey country western music? There are worse things, though I'm not loving "Life's Greatest Fool". Looking up the artist and the story of the album, no, that's not what I'm listening to. Unfortunately I haven't really liked the Byrds albums I've had so far, and I'm not a huge Neil Young fan, which is where I'm expecting this to go. Silver Raven, the title track, Strength of Strings are all prettier, more enjoyable, and I'd even say even relaxing. I'm not completely convinced by the lyrics but they sound nice. From there we downshifted to absolutely soporific. Not awful but not great, either. Nothing I'll particularly remember or come back to.
I don't think it should have been completely panned when it came out in the 70s, but I can't really see how the whole album is hailed as a lost masterpiece either. The title track 'No Other' is definitely great, and the album on the whole has the hallmarks of a well-executed labor of love. Overall, I got tired with the album by the track 'From a Silver Phial' and found my attention span trailing off over the remaining 3 tracks.
Not into it. Typical folky
Meh
no me gusta nada ni siquiera me acuerdo de como era pero basurilla
Never heard of this. Read the wikipedia page about how the studio wasted a lot of money on it, it was a commercial failure and overall disappointment, and then - suddenly - was rediscovered and met with acclaim. They should have just left it in storage. It's uninspired. Not special.
Generic country music but with some nice orchestral arrangements.
I love the opening Wikipedia statement about this album… “No Other is the fourth solo studio album by American singer-songwriter Gene Clark. Released in September 1974,[A] it was largely ignored or lambasted by critics and was a commercial failure; the studio time and cost were seen as excessive and indulgent. The record label, Asylum Records, did not promote the album, and by 1976 had deleted it from their catalog. Clark never recovered from the failure of the album.” Not really a country fan so this album wasn’t for me
I tend to agree with Wikipedia in this case. I did not see this as extraordinary. Decent but not in the top 2000 of all time
Huske ikkje
This is the fourth album by American folk rock singer-songwriter Gene Clark. Upon release in 1974, critics ignored or disliked the album and it was a commercial failure. Clark never recovered from the failure of the album and died in 1991. In the early 2000s No Other was rereleased, this time to positive reviews and critics calling it a "lost masterpiece," "greatest albums ever," and "Clark's magnum opus". No Other was an ambitious album that blended country, folk, jazz, gospel, blues, and rock music together to create "pure ear candy". I enjoyed listening to this album, but none of the songs really stuck out to me as best of the best. It's sad to learn that Gene Clark died thinking his last album was a monumental failure, although it wasn't.
Good but not great
Yet another in a long list of boring albums this list has pushed on me to rate lately.
Pretty standard BBQ music, I suppose. I don't think I'm the target demographic of a southern man driving on a dusty road. Great folky-songs, albeit a little boring.
I lost my notes on this one for some reason. My computer restarted overnight but I always hit "save" but not really sure what happened. Overall, I liked this album, it's very stereotypical classic rock that leans a little more John Denver than Led Zeppelin. My big gripe was that after listening it didn't have much memorability for me. A common strength of classic rock in its unconscious quest for churning out timeless tunes is the memorability factor. So many songs from that era are memorable, catchy, and have remained on radio stations because of that. This album didn't really deliver on that for me.
Sta fissazione per il country, che palle.
This guy has such a hard-on for what it means to be a loser and what's true, it's just a constant stream of two-bit country boy philosophizing about life. Which is funny because this album was apparently such an abysmal failure when it was originally released. Some things are better left in the rubbish bin. The album art is gorgeous though, it's exactly the kind of arts and craftsmanship stuff I'd expect to get from my friend who makes me mix CDs as gifts sometimes. That's not shade, that's a legit compliment .
I am BORED. Didn't sit through it all. Definitely am missing the whole point of this project.
I was all set to disregard this as just another album that I just didn't understand why it was on the list. It was old and folky and lame. I dug into the Wiki article and liked that this album upset David Geffen so I kept reading while it played in the background. I discovered that this album had gotten new attention due to some artists playing it in its entirety (some artists that I appreciated like Beach House, Fleet Foxes and Grizzly Bear) to promote the genius of this album. So I kept listening... It's evident that most of the world has differing opinions than I do. Even after listening to this and then embarking on one of the concerts, I still found very little to get excited about in this album. In my opinion the cover art outshines the music on this one....
Dreary
twangy. but i love the album cover. buti still kinda hate it.
A classic country album. Silver Raven has some interesting vocal moments. Halfway in and I can't say I have found anything that really grabbed me thus far. Some Misunderstanding is another standout song. meh
Ganska mysigt, otroligt ostörigt. Kan rekommendera till min pappa
yee haw. folk.
Not much to say about this one. A pretty safe album to include on the 1001 Albums list as it doesn't take many chances but doesn't completely suck either. It felt similar to the Neil Young album I listened to earlier on this list (a little more upbeat than that one), but I didn't think that Gene Clark's voice was as unique as Neil's which brought it down a notch for me. I am guessing that this record probably stood out more back in the 1970s when it was originally released, and while I did enjoy it somewhat, it ended up becoming background music to me rather quickly and did not have enough elements that would make me come back to it. Silver Raven was the standout track here, but I barely remembered it by the time the album finished as a lot of the tracks felt the same. This one is a textbook definition of a "middle-of-the-road" album for this list. 2.5/5.
Ergh, not another shitty country album! 30 seconds in and I’m giving it a generous 2/5. I’m willing to bet it doesn’t improve. Ok… I hold my hands up, it was actually pretty good. Had it on in the background and found myself really enjoying it in places. 2/5 - Still too much country on it.
ok
A bit too country folk although Silver Raven was good.
Started well and then started losing me
Perfectly fine collection of rootsy songs sung by someone who has a fairly weak voice. Nothing on here is outright bad, but the vast majority of it just didn't stick with me in any way. The songs themselves are solid, and I think a better vocalist would have been able to bring them to life. Favorite Tracks: "No Other", "Strength of Strings"
Not a fan of folk, not a fan of country.. there's two tracks here that I kind of enjoyed ("No Other" and "Lady of the North"). Other than that, mostly just boring background music.
Overall it was an alright album. Laid back and chill if not a little slow, nothing really stood out and grabbed my attention. Best: Strength of Strings Worst: Some Misunderstanding
Great jeans
I went back and forth with this one- had to listen to it 3 times to decide. Don’t buy much of it, but there’s a couple of nice tunes in there. Can’t see myself coming back to it too often
Not quite my type of country, decent album for background music/relaxing though
More 70s country, pedal steel, Neil Young edging towards Jimmy Buffet. Perfectly tolerable.
Not a standout, unfortunately. Wikipedia described it as unsuccessful on release, only to be called a masterpiece many years later, and I understand the early reception.
This was a bit boring. Just regular country music I suppose. 5/10.
No está malo, pero si muy desabrido.
Prima country achtige muziek, maar wel wat saai
Not a fan, too slow
Never heard of this guy, def not my usual thing. I didn't hate it but I don't think I'll be back for another round. I liked his voice and the solos were p sick but it just kinda felt like a chore to listen to in spots
For the birds
Perfectly Bland, not much else to say.
too old
Like a not as good Neil young
I liked some of the songs, but it wasn't a memorable album overall. 2/5 stars.
I'm just not really into the country sound. I enjoyed 'No other' and 'Strength of Strings', but they couldn't save this album from being 2 stars for me.
Booooooooring.
