Classic
One of the best debut albums ever. No skips
Solid album
Jimi Hendrix has cast perhaps the longest shadow across (rock) music, and perhaps only Chuck Berry's shadow is longer. Are You Experienced is without a doubt more influential and important than Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, and Jimi Hendrix has affected and influenced musical composition as much as The Beatles. That said, I don't really like listening to much Hendrix but in small doses. I've found Are You Experienced to be his most listenable album, but I will not deny his influence.
Gold standard....so far ahead of it's time
Very cool
I love Jimi Hendrix, and this might just be his best album, with the only competition being Electric Ladyland. Psychedelic rock classic
Well known 10/10
I enjoyed listening to this one with Allan. :)
Recorded more than 50 years ago and still sounds unique. What a slap that must have been at that time.
This album is GREAT. Essentially perfect. This is Jimi at his best. The solos are great, the rhythms are awesome, and to do them all while singing...enough said. This album earns all the props it gets and it has some of his biggest hits. The tones and guitar styles are wayyyyy ahead of their time here. Liked Songs: "Purple Haze" , "Manic Depression" , "Hey Joe" , "Love Or Confusion" , "I Don't Live Today" , "The Wind Cries Mary" , "Fire" , "Foxey Lady" , "Stone Free" , "51st Anniversary" , "Highway Chile" , "Can You See Me" , "Remember"
Absolutely groundbreaking album, really changed the game in terms of psychedelic rock
Excellent album! Been listening to it for years
The US version of the album, with the first four singles included, gets my five star voting. Along with Fire, the title track, and indeed every track.
An absolute classic without doubt. You forget how many great songs are on this album. It drags in the final third a bit but it's still more than solid. Mitch Mitchell is incredible. Jazz drumming should be in rock music more often. Finesse.
This is easily the strongest debut album I’ve listened to through this website! Hendrix was a giant in the psychedelic/rock scene and his legacy and artistry lives on decades later. This album has some of my favorite Hendrix tracks such as Purple Haze, Hey Joe, The Wind Cries Mary, and Foxey Lady! I very much enjoyed this album and I will definitely be listening to it again. Give it a listen!
LSD is a hell of a drug. My least favorite of the Experience albums but you can see why this blew people's minds. I love Mitch Mitchell's drumming. I remember walking by the house of my friend Hairboy (not his real name) and listening to him practicing his drums Fire was one of his favorites and you could recognize it from the drums alone. Hendrix's guitar playing is so pleasurable to listen to. Every note in his solos is distinctly articulated rather than speedy licks without intent. His rhythm playing draws on his roots backing soul singers and supports the song structure.
5/5
Classic, groundbreaking and good for a listen anytime you want to be inspired about the impact one guitarist can make on the world.
As mind blowing as the first time I listened to it. As a young teen, learning to play guitar, this record was a very important first influence for me.
Hell yeah great record. Jimi will always be a standout star but the experience really is a band effort. Excellent playing from the trio and some amazing psych songs.
not my favorite Jimi but still a great album. obviously, he's a great guitarist, and the songs are pretty good. there are some all timers here. underrated are the drums and bass here - really the ensemble of the three of them together were incredible and groundbreaking. it's pretty great!
I am too biased for this review. I own a white strat. I don't have much to add to what a genius Jimi is, we still copy his playing 60 years later. Only thing I will add is I think Mitch Mitchell's drumming on this album is awesome. He has a great feel/time that lets Jimi go crazy.
If you like music made after this album, you owe a debt to this album. You can't name me a single musician that wasn't directly influenced by Hendrix or influenced by someone influenced by Hendrix. That's how wide the influence of this album is. It changed music as we know it and the world has been searching for something that reaches these heights since Jimi died.
Jimi is the man, this album is a justified addition to the Top 1001. The intro chords of "Purple Haze" are instantly recognizable by young and old. This is damn near a Greatest Hits package with "PH" (385M listens), "Manic Depression" (30M), "Hey Joe" (331M), "The Wind Cries Mary" (125M), "Fire" (60M), "Foxey Lady" (108M)- all radio staples - plus glue songs & smaller hits like "May This Be Love", "Third Stone From The Sun" and the title track. SOLID lineup! And the remastered and updated version has 6 more songs including "Red House" & "Stone Free". It's a really good album that has held up well, includes a ton of hit songs, gets airplay 57 yrs later, had huge influence on all the rock and alt music that followed and Jimi is a legend. 5 stars for overall quality.
Better than Coldplay
An unreal legend, and a badass album. This is one of the most unique and groundbreaking psychedelic rock records, probably, like… forever. Not only has it been influential - it sort of set the foundation, a sonic blueprint that shaped so much that followed. Listening to Hendrix feels like he dropped out of the sky from another planet, channeling some celestial, astral force through his guitar and voice. There’s an otherworldly quality…he was sent here just to leave his mark on music and culture - a supernatural force. I never really thought about what the word superstar truly meant—but yeah, Hendrix was that 100%.
I inherited a very early pressing of this record on vinyl from my grandpa. I don't know what he was doing with it, as he was more of a Marty Robbins and Glen Miller kinda guy. I like to fantasize that maybe he bought it on a lark when it dropped in the 60s as a way to perhaps understand my mom's hippie phase or something, coz I cannot imagine him listening to this and digging it. Either way, it was in very good condition and a crown jewel of my collection. Every track on this release is essential. As great as they all are, it is a bit frustrating now to contend with the shorter lengths for the tracks that were obviously meant for radio play at just under 3:30. You can hear that those songs were intended or even yearning to go longer, but the record company fades them out so they'll fit on one side of a promo 45. I'm looking at you, Purple Haze and Foxy Lady. Speaking of, I remember when I was a young dumb record store clerk once stating that I could sometimes hear the opening riff from Foxy Lady in my head whenever I saw a hot chick walk by. How he captured that in sound I will never fully understand, but it still kinda fits. Thanks grandpa, and thanks, Jimi.
Loved every track. Such amazing talent.
Brilliant album
Psychedelic guitar rock at its finest. Jimi is a legend and the production on this thing is stellar.
You don't rate this album, it rates you. It told me I was a 5, and my heart rejoiced. "Out of 10", it said, and I promised to be better.
po vamo falar sério o que o hendrix tocava de guitarra era um trem meio absurdo né dá pra escutar a influência clara do mano em absolutamente TUDO que foi feito com uma guitarra depois q ele existiu na terra debut brutal parabéns aos envolvidos
I have never listened to this album before although the famous songs I know well. Amazing. A lot more psychedelic than I was expecting. What a debut and a classic album.
372/1001 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌗
Amazing
The first album from one of of the most influential musicians in rock. Not my favorite Hendrix, but seminal Hendrix. I'm grateful to 1001 for prompting me to listen to this album in its entirety, I haven't done that in a long time.
One of the best out there!
The Good: The artist cares about our opinion… The Bad: He technically did not state it as a question… The Ugly: Nothing really… Is this the best album ever? No. Does it contain some of the best songs ever? Yes! Should this album be mandatory listening? Yes. I can’t recall when I heard Jimi’s guitar playing for the first time, but I believe it is going to be late late ‘80s most likely, which means that my musical pallet was already colored. I wish I could go back and tape my reaction to hearing the intro the Hey Joe for the first time… if only we had time-machines… or maybe it’s a good thing we don’t… I’ve tried to learn how to play several of these songs on the guitar, and I’d argue that The Wind Cries Mary is the one which I dominate the best… Where, in my humblest of opinions, Red House would be the hardest. Regardless, there are too many good songs, and even more great songs on this album—my guilty pleasure being Remember, which wasn’t even on any of the original pressings, which makes rating this album a cheat. I will give this album 5*, however, if you go by the original realeses, not knowing if you need to pick between UK or the US release, potentially this album would get a 4 1/2*, which potentially could be downgraded… just saying… 5*
Why are the UK and US editions so different? I'm going with the US edition, but at some point I may listen to the UK order. The albums come fast and hard- when I was really in my music phase, I would listen to an album for days. Purple Haze- i love this song, but how did it become the iconic Jimi Hendrix track? Manic Depression Hey Joe Love or Confusion May This Be Love I Dont Live Today The Wind Cries Mary- there was a time when this was my favorite Hendrix song-still a bluesy classic Fire Third Stone From the Sun Foxey Lady Are You Experienced? Stone Free 51st Anniversary Highway Chile- great opening riff in... is that a minor key? Can You See Me Remember Red House- my favorite closing line ever, "If my baby won't love me, I know her sister will"
I'm always at least a little scared when I get a real canon classic on here. It always comes with a kind of difficult game of balancing influence and storied circumstances and any of the other proceedings with the inclinations of one's personal taste. I think I've settled on a kind of healthy skepticism that at least lets me take a step back to decide if I even like these albums, because the truth of the matter is that almost no one will truly *love* all of them. And Are You Experienced is about as canon as classics get. This is often cited as, perhaps, the single biggest turning point in rock history, and Hendrix may be cited as the greatest ever guitarist more often than any other single person. And it helps that he kind of invented the "guitar hero" persona, his whole aesthetic and performance style was striking and extremely bold. With that being said, *damn* this is good. Is Hendrix the greatest guitarist ever? I honestly don't know. Detractors may mention more technically proficient guitarists, and on the other end of the scale, you have people talking about Hendrix like some kind of wizard without saying anything insightful about his playing. Honestly, its gotten to the point where, before listening to this, I couldn't have really told you what his playing sounds like, the myth has just escaped the music that much. The thing with Hendrix is that he kind of re-invented the guitar, and how it could be used in popular music. Since starting this list, I've heard quite a few '60s albums, and it has put into perspective just how much Hendrix was in his own league. In one word, I'd say his playing is "organic", this album seems to work similarly to jazz in a lot of ways. A lot of these songs have a kind of baseline riff or motif that is established, and that Hendrix and the rest of the band seem to use as an anchor, but they often kind of play it loose. If you really focus, especially on Hendrix's guitar and Mitch Mitchell's *ultra* underrated drumming, the moment to moment shapes of their instrumental lines are really hard to make out. Everyone here has an ebb and flow, and Hendrix's performance is emphasized by his equally revolutionary fuzz guitar tone. As a result, Hendrix sounds bold, exciting and dynamic, even today, and that carries into the album as a whole. The sound across Are You Experienced borrows a lot from blues rock, soul, and psych without ever really *completely* fitting into any one of them. The only genre that really feels right is "rock", just general "rock", in part because of just how archetypal the sound here is. Additionally, this has some *classics* on it; Purple Haze, Hey Joe, The Wind Cries Mary, Fire, Foxey Lady, and we've already hit nearly half of the tracklist. Everything else here is just as good, Manic Depression is a soulful, bluesy rock song with some great lyrics. Third Stone From The Sun is an engaging jam. Are You Experienced is a fascinating closer, taking a lot of very bold psychedelic elements and blending them seamlessly with the album's sound. Yeah, this one deserves the praise, it's just got everything: iconic songs, exciting performances, *wide* influence. I've got to give this one its flowers.
Awesome! One of the greatest guitarist's greatest albums. What a creative force that reinvented rock and roll guitar. Jimi!
Excellent
First listened to this when at school. Big fan of Hendrix and always good to listen to again. Although I would caution against the track listing on Spotify which contains track not on original album e.g. wind cries Mary, purple haze etc... the original album is 5 stars as it is.
Oh this is tough. It’s Jimi Hendrix so should be an automatic 5. But I always preferred Electric Ladyland so maybe it should be a 4? But it’s an album that there was a before and an after, so a 5 it is.
A titanic classic. Absolutely love Jimmy. One of the few 5 stars I have given.
One word, cool. More words, really groovy, funky, bluesy, stoney 😊... Two all time classics and the rest is also great, easy 5 stars
Well this is great. Still sounds contemporary albeit Foxy Lady lyrics are a little goofy. This must’ve melted everyone’s faces in 1967.
yup
ZG
Still holds up even though I'm not into psychedelia much.
What can I say that have already been said about Jimi Hendrix? He was a once in a generation talent who died too young. This album is one banger after another.
I have listened to JH since I was a 14yo. My dad hated him because he thought Jimi didn't sing well. I thought this was a pretty vacuous assessment from dad. If people don't like JHE because it's not their taste, that's fine. Onto each his own. But you cannot say JH wasn't great, maybe the greatest, guitar player ever. And I hate making absolutist proclamations when the future is so vast. But I've not heard anyone I have liked more or thought had more talent. Maybe I will be lucky enough to live long enough to experience a greater talent. This album is timeless.
10/10 Wow - what an album. Guitar rock, redefined and the bar set for everyone else. The one thing Jimi had that so few other guitarists do is the FEEL of the instrument. He's technically awesome, obviously, but that what his playing is about. Every song is great. For me, the drums and bass are much better on this than Electric aladypand, where they were trying too hard to keep up with the virtuosity. They didn't need to.
I reviewed this on Feb 14th 2025. Having listened again I have nothing additional to say, this is simply a masterpiece. Previous review: "Not everyone loves Jimi, but I do, and this was the first album I heard. I’m always awed by his magic fingers and that unmistakable tone, after all tone is in the fingers. The blues, the rock, the riffs, all great. The influence he still has to this day makes not only this album, but his collective work that much more impressive. This unforgettable experience can’t be mistaken for anything less than a 5."
yeah. it's good. All of Hendrix's recorded output is at least good. I like the second album a bit better, but this one has the indelible tunes on it. this man's early death is the greatest tragedy in rock n' roll history. President of the 27 club.
From the iconic opening notes of “Purple Haze” to the iconic question “Are You Experienced?” that closes the album, this record is absolutely stacked. It has several all-timers in the above, “Wind Cries Mary,” “Foxy Lady,” and “Hey Joe,” but there are no skips. A hell of a debut record and a timeless classic.
Helt konge. Hørte mye på denne i ungdommen si.
- Absolutely wild that you can just listen to the lesser known tracks of this album and still have a groundbreaking experience. The diversity of styles is unreal. - Obviously Hendrix's guitar is the highlight; his use of distortion is a miracle to listen to. But his voice also brings a lot to the table and kudos to Redding and Mitchell (the other members of the Experience) for bringing their A-games.
Awesome !
Лучшее. Могу слушать бесконечно
Djöfull er þetta mikið meistarastykki. Brautryðjandi og besti gítarleikari allra tíma.
Just amazing album, start to finish
Hell yeah, Jimi! Everyone knows this album is awesome. Gonna be a breeze to listen to. Purple Haze Stone cold classic. Everything there is to say about this song has already been said. One of the most recognizable guitar riffs of all time. Iconic. 5/5 Manic Depression A really solid guitar track. Has some great bluesy progression. Love the more psychedelic elements of the track. Gives a controlled chaos sort of feeling. Good. 4/5 Hey Joe A defining song of the era. Jimi delivers the lyrics which such gusto and charm it's hard to recognize how dark their contents really are. Love the psychedelic density of the track. Classic. 5/5 Love Or Confusion Don't love how distant the vocals feel. Awesome guitar playing. I feel the bassline does a great job being a grounding constant for the otherwise chaotic instrumentation. Despite me not enjoying how the vocals are mixed I recognize they have a sort of narrator esque quality to them which sort of fits with the lyrical content. Good. 4/5 May This Be Love I'm enjoying the change up in tone from the previous tracks. Has a bit of a more structured nature to it which is honestly quite appreciated at this point in the album. Love the drums. And of course with every Jimi Hendrix song the guitar is masterfully performed. Great. 4.5/5 I Don't Live Today Has the same bluesy qualities as many of the previous tracks. Impresses with its deep and dense sound. Love the hard hitting chorus. The outro goes crazy. Great. 4.5/5 The Wind Cries Mary Really pleasant and cool. Really like the colourful lyrics. Instrumentally it's a bit slower than many of the previous tracks, though I find little issue with the guitar tone actually shines a lot at this tempo. Good. 4/5 Fire Classic 60s rock swagger. Love the deep bass. Not a standout track by any means, but does a good job at what it tries to do. Decent. 3.5/5 Third Stone From The Sun A psychedelic rock experience. The spoken word, the deep effects, the slowed down vocals and the strange background effects. All add up to a truly unique session of audible strangeness. Love the experimentation. Fantastic. 5/5 Foxey Lady Classic guitar riff. The lyrics are kinda basic, but the performance is definitely pretty great. Oozes confidence and slickness. Good. 4/5 Are You Experienced? I like the parallell piano and guitar a lot. The backwards sounding effects add some interesting colour. A strange almost improvisational sounding track. Love the chaos. Great. 4.5/5 Stone Free It's fun to hear some different percussion. Really soulful vocal delivery. The simplicity of the song's structure is kinda refreshing to hear. Great solo. Good. 4/5 51st Anniversary A really synergistic instrumental, I feel like all the elements work extremely well together. Love how melodic the vocals are at times. Great. 4.5/5 Highway Chile I don't love the intro. The recording sounds a bit rough on this one. Feels kinda simple instrumentally outside the solo which remains pretty great. Decent. 3.5/5 Can You See Me That single bendy opening guitar note is pretty fantastic, love that it repeats throughout the track. The instrumental has a lot of drive to it. Good. 4/5 Remember Sounds colourful. Love the imagery in the lyrics. The mournful vocal delivery is pretty slick. Great groove. Good. 4/5 Red House It's a fairly standard blues rock track, though the guitar sets it apart. Not particularly exciting, but fine for what it is. Completely carried by the stellar guitar playing. Decent. 3.5/5 It's Hendrix okay... Hard to beat when it comes to influence. Not many people get to completely change the approach when it comes to an entire instrument. Complete and utter mastery of every intricacy of the electric guitar. His absolute prescense can carry even a just okay song over the finish line into something special. Sure there's more exciting stuff out there, but if you take into account when this was released its hard to find something as experimental and virtuosic while reaching such a wide audience. It's just so impossibly cool and effortless while also having some edge and rawness to it that only comes from someone who crafts with vision and feeling. And while the guitar may be the main selling point the other elements of the band is a great supporting force, which through its dependability allows for the intense experimentation to flourish. The vocal delivery is nothing to scuff at either. Hendrix has an ability to find just the right cadance and temperature to go with both intense and laid back tunes, showing a great understanding of showmanship and spacing. Fantastic album, would strongly recommend. 5/5 Fave Track Third Stone From The Sun
Raw and powerful with some beautiful ballads. I don't know enough to appreciate the technical prowess, but I feel it.
This was such a lovely chance to revisit an album I listened to when I was a teenager, and also to see that it still held up after all these years. Didn’t get the urge to skip, and they all sounded as fresh and exciting as I remember.
I wasn't prepared for how much I liked this album. Never listened to anything but the classic singles, but this flows really well. Loved it.
Oh man, this is great. Pure psychedelic wonder, and an album I want to come back to again and again - its absolutely not fair that a man in his twenties can play an album like this where it sounds like forty years of craft have gone into it. Jimi was a wonder, and this album is worth just putting on and floating away to. Fire is my personal fave, but it's genuinely hard to choose!
Fantastic!
probably the closest we got to an actual wizard on earth. summoned blood and thunder, water and earth. elemental music. the rhythm section made the whole thing fly even higher, and the times mythologized it. he was just a guy with demons and vices and fears, but he sounded like a god. a song like "manic depression" is always jarring because it's about a human problem. why you singing about this, jimi? aren't you above this, on your own plane? turns out, no. and that's both what made him so great and what robbed the world of more of him. a killer debut and a great record. gimme more jimi.
It was an experience. This drummer, man, what a manic.
It was an experience. YEAAuuh. Found new appreciation for the other two of the trio through repeat listens. Especially the drummer. Crazy crazy quality on a debut album. Experience 5
Pure fire 10/10…..and it’s my third favorite Hendrix album.
Have really grown to love Jimi Hendrix.
I tend to gravitate more towards the bluesy/folky sound of Hey Joe, The Wind Cries Mary and Red House. Overall enjoyed the record and was surprised that this was the album debut for Hendrix!
Another all-time classic, if you don’t like it then you should just get better taste. More or less invented modern rock music and guitar playing (or was at least the best to do it at the time), and still holds up today. Can only have more admiration to Jimi Hendrix cos I’ve tried to play some of it, man was cooking.
Hell of a start
.....in the end it's one of the albums that triggered my love of music.
One of the few albums I’ve listened to where I don’t have a single bad thing to say about it. Jimi is a phenomenal frontman and an even better guitarist. I am glad to say I am now experienced.
Masterpiece
Startling debut by Jimi Hendrix. A masterpiece of guitar virtuosity only surpassed by Electric Ladyland. Undeniable classic.
Gottalove, nuff said
A classic, I don't know how many times I've listened to this album, but it still hasn't gotten boring.
I've definitely been experienced.
I had a glowing review written up that I guess I didn’t save… great fucking album. I think that sums it up.
One of those albums where I was just amazed front to back. I still can’t comprehend how Jimi Hendrix was so ahead of his time.
I got this for Xmas the year ot came out.
Just mindblowingly good. This for me is one of the greatest if not just straight up greatest, debuts of all time. Its ragged, its rough, the guitarwork is out of this world and Jimi's vocals finish the picture to the fullest. The record has an overal theme flowing though it and even though the emphasis is on the electric guitar, there's not a single boring track on here. If I dare say this is 60's psychrock's finest record and even going into the future there's nothing that beats this experience. Favorite track: Purple Haze. Overalll score: 9.8/10
Putting this out there: best debut album ever
A true "album" experience. I can hear the influence from this record in a lot of the genres I love today. Excellent album top to bottom. Great songs individually and especially exceptional as a whole.
thank you jimi hendrix for blessing my ears! fav song is gonna have to be fire - those syncopated drums that happen like twice in the song probably made the people of the late 60's shit their pants in excitement. also, the fact that i knew half of these songs from listening to a greatest hits album like two years ago? in my books, if a song sticks with someone, the artist did something right. and jimi most definitely did something right. will be giving this five stars. undoubtedly. there was not one point on this album where my mind wasnt blown open, the lid sent flying all the way to iceland or some shit; i literally saw it leave at around 1:04 during stone free. he sung those melodies. while playing that guitar. what the freak. "will it burn me if i touch the sun?" - jimi (this guy knew how good he was)
purple haze - wow!!!! very very cool instrumentation and texture. think its about drugs or being in love with a cool girl or both tbf idk u jimi you do you!!! manic depression - hooly shit such a cool intro these drums are mega epic. i am beginning to understand why mr hendy is so famous. i am making guitar player faces at the solo in the middle of the song very very good hey joe - ok we mellowin it down i see uuuu oh okay nevermind its about homicide. ok pretty fire, but tbh it surprises me this one is so popular i think manic depression is better love or confusion - wait holy poop why are the lyrics kinda real hendy ur me fr. beat switch up goes hard may this be love - fuckin wit it! again cant tell if this is about drugs or a woman but its cute if its the latter. ok this is funky now i like this!! cutesy lil instrumental section love to see it i dont live today - absolutely wonderful intro WOW this is quite cool these drums are very sick i like how it goes double time for a sec its like edging me THIS IS THE LEAST LISTENED TO TRACK?!!! underrated af mr hendy omg it switches up ur lying this is so so so cool this might be my fav so far the wind cries mary - very funky; i could not tell you the slightest idea what this could be about but its a sick tune i can imagine it being in the background of a coming of age movie where they get stoned for the first time fire - accurate title. let me stand next to ur fire!!!!!!!!!!! idk what it is about this but it kinda feels like its taken influence from like 50s-60s shoowop kinda songs like the emphasis on certain beats and the bass line its very cool third stone from the sun - love me some swing ITS ABOUT ALIENS FUCK YESSSSSS very very good guitar ..... i think these sound effects are supposed to emulate some kind of alien invasion wait this is so cool was this all done on a guitar. oh okay rip humanity fire way to go out ig quite a haunting outro considering the meaning, i fw it foxey lady - very funky monkey gets me hype i would listen getting ready for a party or something. this might be another favourite!!! are you experienced? - title track ooooh... im ngl im so suprised this was recorded in 1967 its so ahead of its time. yep this ones definitely about drugs! tbh for the title track its not as good as the rest of the album im not fw this one as hard as all the previous stone free - im headbopping,,,,,, i fw this one hardddd idk it just makes me feel happy plus a 10/10 solo love 2 see it 51st anniversary - very dancey like id goth dance to this;; i love how distinct the sound of each track is like theyre so cohesive you can tell so clearly they were written for the same project but theyre all really cool and unique. oh dear why is his voice so hot in this yes whatever you say mr hendy highway chile - very like smooth,, again i can kinda feel a 50s influence like very og rock n roll vibe in the beat - i like it i would listen on a road trip but maybe im just saying that bc it has highway in the title can you see me - pretty cool, a lil boring but thats chill remember - i am getting major beatles or i daresay even elvis vibes right neow!! a lot more mellow and unique to anything on the album, i think this is really cute i would dance around my kitchen on sunday mornings with my future wife to this song red house - very cool track to finish it all off, encapsulates the vibes of the entire album really perfectly in conclusion, very very deserving of the hype hendrix sorry for doubting u king. my top 3 are, 🥉stone free, 🥈foxey lady, 🥇i don't live today
One hit after another. Undeniable musical genius.
He was the first to show what the electric guitar could do--then everyone had to catch up.
5/5 that was fantastic. What a ride. The jimi ive been waiting for and expecting. So this is why everyone loves him. Well deserved
Hey Joe
I think Jimi Hendrix is one of the greatest guitarist of all time, but fir some reason I listened to this album once almost 10 years ago and never listened to it again. I would listen to all of the songs individually, but for some reason I always would put on Axis Bold as Love and Electric Lady Land over this album. I guess that was a mistake, because this album is great. There are still a couple of songs that aren't great, but there are so many all time classics here that it's hard not to love. Mid 5.
Bästa debutplattan någonsin. 10/10
Bangers only! Fuzzy
Incredible. Jimi was a master. 4.8
Really very classic. Debut album from the experience featuring a lot of his best known songs and the psychedelic sound that would only be expanded on. It’s difficult to find words that are as positive as the album deserves. Yes! Very awesome!
Incredible!
Couldn't put it down
Incredible, and incredibly influential.
Wonderful.
so fucking good. why did i never listen to this all the way through before
Good
Incredible guitar playing. Also very heavy for its time
This is my favourite of the Experience albums. I can only imagine what it must have been like to witness Jimi Hendrix's arrival in the UK; it certainly affected those who were there, Eric Clapton among them. He, Peter Green, Mick Taylor and the like were excellent guitar players, who played the blues with a deferential respect to the Chicago players who inspired them. But listen to Red House, where Jimi plays cosmic blues that pushes the envelope, freer and rawer. "Are You Experienced" was preceded by three excellent singles, "Hey Joe", "Purple Haze" and "The Wind Cries Mary", which were included on the US version of the album but not on the original UK version, and the record is all the better for that, more of a singular statement. And it is a band album - opener, "Foxy Lady" rests as much on Mitch Mitchell's busy, jazz inflected drumming as on Hendrix's riffing and vocals; Noel Redding's hypnotic, steady bass playing holds down "3rd Rock from the Sun" while all the stunning, extraterrestrial, whammy bar craziness is threatening to fly us off into space. "Remember" is the Experience's version of Northern Soul; "Love or Confusion" is proto-metal which could sit on Deep Purple in Rock. The beauty of "May This Be Love" crashes into the hard rock riffing of "Fire". No one had played guitar like this before. In these days when every YouTube wannabe can toss off Van Halen two-handed tapping and blistering scales, it could be hard to comprehend the impact Jimi Hendrix had. But imagine what he would and could have done had he lived, where he would have pushed guitar music. Move Over Rover...
5 - great record but it’s closer to a 4 on material. The incredible impact this album has is what brings it to a 5
Album Cover: 10/10
Guitar god
Great album
The deluxe version that is proposed is really incredible, but the original is great, too. An enjoyable mix of songs and styles of Jimi's hits
Listens more like a greatest hits compilation rather than a debut album.
Many great songs, great guitar work, debut album, another artist dead too soon.
Weird the site says "Jimi Hendrix" instead of "The Jimi Hendrix Experience" but it's absolutely wall-to-wall with great tracks. Seem to remember every noted even though I haven't listened to this in ages.
With the resurgence of genres like shoegaze, psychedelia, garage rock, and even this new generation of post-grunge, if you’ve never sat down and really paid attention to “Are You Experienced,” now is the time. This album takes the essence of garage rock to a whole new level. It’s raw, dirty, gritty, and unpolished. Hendrix’s guitar work is drenched in distortion and feedback, giving it a feel of controlled chaos. Every time I think about music from the ‘60s, it blows my mind how an album like this was appreciated and at the forefront, even with all the experimentation in psychedelic rock. Music was valued for its imperfections because they gave the songs so much color and texture. Unfortunately, that appreciation faded as the decades went by, and music became all about perfection, precision, and being so polished it often feels saturated. Jimi Hendrix just happened to be at the right place at the right time, because in today’s world, he might be completely overlooked by the masses.
Riktigt bra skiva. Svinmånga hits. Men även resten är grymt faktiskt. Diggar särskilt third stone from the sun. Det här lyssnar man på från början till slut utan en död stund eller att man vill slippa.
Till skillnad från tidigare skivor är denna verkligen min ungdoms Jimi Hendrix. Mästerlig rakt igenom utan en dålig låt.
Jimi is goated for this one, that is for sure. Let's talk about the sound of this album as a whole: out of this world guitar and drum work that continues to be cheaply imitated to this day. This is a touchstone of modern rock as a genre, and a gem of an early psych album. Rating: 5.0
How am I supposed to even rate this? From Purple Haze to Red House, these are masterpieces of rock music. Top ten album ever, Hendrix at its greatest. It’s fun, exciting, sexy, dangerous, dark, and just beautiful. If you have any interest in music played on guitar then this is a must listen. Easy five stars.
I didn't need to listen to this for the 40th time to know it's a 5-star album, but I did and it still is. This is one of, if not the greatest psychedelic rock album of all time and ironically, I think the other strongest contender is Axis: Bold As Love. Are You Experienced is a whole plethora of feelings encapsulated by incredible performances from Noel Redding, Mitch Mitchel, and Jimi himself. The production is fantastic, even with the limitations at the time (like an entire drum kit being recorded with one or two mics and panned completely to one side). The songwriting is fantastic and fully formed, but I think the strongest attribute of Jimi's music is the atmosphere. At times, it's a strange, no-holds-barred, sexy trip, and at others it's got a moody, dark, almost haunting vibe. He pushes the boundaries of rock music into metal in some places, and R&B or soul in others. Hendrix was, without a doubt, a musical genius. One that was gone from the world far too soon. THe music that he left behind should be cherished that much more. 10/10
Just great.
There is music before Jimi Hendrix, and there is music after Jimi Hendrix. Everything changed with this one man. He was a genius beyond all geniuses.
Gema
I love this record so much. This is one I don't even need to listen to before rating it, but I will listen to it anyway because it's been long enough since my last time. Hendrix is an icon and his guitar is his child. Such gritty riffs, captivating vocals, and his bandmates are a perfect complement to complete the sound. "Manic Depression" is one of my favorite songs of all-time, but every track on this record is great. "Third Stone from the Sun" is a super easy and trippy instrumental track that lays so well in the middle offering a little break to chill. The track list sequence is just right and helps the record flow so well. Kudos to the engineers that mastered this as it really captures Hendrix and all of his essence.
There must be a lot of pedantic people like me doing this project, who get annoyed when we're directed towards longer, later versions of the classic albums we're supposed to be appraising. (Not blaming anyone personally.) Anyway, I found the original version eventually, after a couple of false starts, Purple Hazes and Hey Joes (not really a hardship). I'm going 5 stars either way - it's just the coolest, most magical fusion. The sounds! The soul. The insane drumming. This was way better than Axis Bold As Love imo.
I already kinda knew that this was going to be good, I really liked the album cover before. Guitars are some of the best ever (obviously) but there are some seriously revolutionary stuff on here, some which I think could even be classed as shoegaze, if they were simpler and not too bluesey. some absolutely killer solos, especially the highway chile one, which especially stood out to me. It just feels like every single song is great, but not always in the exact same ways. Only critique is that the singing is not always good, but that is probably to let the instrumentals stand out more. Favourite songs: all Overall around 9/10
There’s a lot of great stuff on here. Many Hendrix hits and gems, but the other songs on here are also pretty great. Overall this is a 5/5 record
Contrary to my earlier statements, I realize now that this really is the best Hendrix record. Nearly all the songs are good and some are even great. Beyond that it’s such an important step in the evolution of rock music as the first hard rock, stoner rock and arguably even heavy metal record (on at least one track) it deserves the highest rating.
As classic as it gets
Epic 9/10 album highlights were Hey Joe, Red House, Purple Haze, Foxey Lady
This is difficult. Jimi, and his main-series albums are beyond criticism. Not that I with to trash the albums or his skills, but... There's so much wonderful stuff on here that you already know, and even the lesser known tracks are inventive and distinctive, but there is a whiff of "He's a genius, so I'm pre-conditioned to see it as wonderful." A solid 4.9997 star album
I’ll never get over watching that man play the guitar with his teeth for the first time. He was something special
5 of 5. Duh
This album changed rock music forever. 5/5
I am not a huge Hendrix fan -- there's something about the raw, basic sound of most of his recordings that reminds me of my high school rock band and sounds very unsophisticated overall to me. Don't get me wrong -- Jimi's guitar playing is absolutely awesome every single time, and Mitch Mitchell and Noel Redding are amazing performers as well, but the overall sound quality often just brings everything down. That said, there are Jimi Hendrix (Experience) songs I love, and this album has every one of them. This was a great listen -- so good, I listened twice in a row -- and I loved it. Five stars.
Escuché Purple Haze y ya sabía que iba a ser un discazo
17 incredible songs. What output!
Hell Yeah!
7-7-7
Ahhh, Jimi. This was great, just as I remembered.
Not my genre, but I certainly can't knock the guitar work. Seriously, I kinda HAFTA give it a 5. It really is an important album.
Had listened to a greatest hits album by Hendrix and apart from the obvious hits didn't really like it. Listening to the same songs in the way they where originally organized and ordered and the experience is brilliant, they flow and the hits don't stand out as much. The whole album experience 5 star
Just an incredible album start to finish.
so many hits on this album. wow.
This one doesn't just rock - it levitates. The guitar doesn’t sound played so much as set on fire, and the grooves feel like they’ve been beamed in from another planet. Feels less like a band playing together and more like a magician pulling sound out of thin air. Hard to believe this was a debut. Spins: ??? Playlist Additions: - Purple Haze - Hey Joe - The Wind Cries Mary - Foxey Lady - Red House
How can I rate it anything but 5? Groovy, funky, virtuosic, seminal, amazing.
How did this even happen? There were huge changes taking place in in music at this time (case studies: Beatles, Dylan) but Hendrix’s first album still seems so unexpected, sounds so good, and feels so impactful. The other two members of the Experience support Jimi well; I love the drum work, which has the relentless Keith Moon sound. And the (few) deep cuts never disappoint. You don’t need this list to tell you to hear this before you die, but it’s always good to hear albums like this again. And again.
Man. 1967. For crying out loud. I can't imagine living in a time with the volume of incredible music being released. What a fabulous album. There are very few artists who can generate so much power track to track with basically three instruments. I know a lot of technical work was done on the back end to fill things out, but the work of all three musicians in amazing. This album feels more like a greatest hits album than a debut, and at the same time, even lesser tracks soar. Rumor has it that they wanted to include a cover of "Like A Rolling Stone" on this album as they were performing it live. As much as I would love to hear it, this album does just fine all on its own. A masterpiece.
Classic Album - probably his best
I can clearly see how this influenced basically every hair metal and rock and roll band I've listened to from the 70s onward. Nice highlight of the blues roots of rock
Jimi... nothing compares
GOAT
the debut album of the late and very great jimi hendrix; a strong and mind-blowing example of creative and psychedelic guitar music. if there's one man that seriously put us ahead of the game when it came to rock music, it would no doubt be hendrix. there's most psychedelia from this time with your weird sitars and folksy, medieval influence, then there's just REALLY REALLY true psy-rock. that's what this album is.
Awesome
The first album on this list that I didn’t just have to “appreciate”…an album that sounded as good as anything else I’ve ever heard, and one I will continue to listen to strictly for enjoyment rather than for any other lofty minded purposes
Such a great album. My first 5. Obviously very familiar with multiple songs on the album, but the ones that I wasn’t aware of were so beautiful. Damn shame Jimi was too cool for this world… what a musical genius.
All time great album. Hendrix remains my favorite guitarist. Frank and I and our band (Easy Steps or Lesbian Make Out Party - not sure what era that was) performed Foxy Lady at our 8th grade talent show to all of our stone faced classmates. I remember being upset with Frank for insisting on doing the Fox ears mime in the chorus. We also refused to stop playing until the teachers attempted to unplug our amps. Rock n Roll baby! Pretty cool 13 year olds though, for real. Hey Joe later became a staple in the cover lineup. For Hendrix on the full album listens you see the gap between his freakish artistic talent and his song writing ability. The good songs are transcendent and the others pale in comparison. Alex has gotten in my head with this stereo/mono thing. The stereo on a few tracks is standing out negatively.
AYE is one of few lifelong albums for me. I can remember listening to this before iTunes days and have tried my hand at learning a ton of these throughout the years. Its an incredible work with a diverse track list. I dont agree with the criticism of it being only “loud rock”. Its got quite a few delicate songs/sections that leave that vibe - wind cries mary, may this be love. With that said, being loud is definitely a part of the Experience’s experience 😂 reading the wiki about the recording process was enlightening. 5 stars.
Not everyone loves Jimi, but I do, and this was the first album I heard. I’m always awed by his magic fingers and that unmistakable tone, after all tone is in the fingers. The blues, the rock, the riffs, all great. The influence he still has to this day makes not only this album, but his collective work that much more impressive. This unforgettable experience can’t be mistaken for anything less than a 5.
5/5
Exceptional
Astounding. It's like a greatest hits record.
my first five star. What can you say? It’s incredible! I can only imagine what it must’ve been like when it was first released.
Haven't listened to this beginning to end in decades. Still holds up! The order seemed weird as I listen to a lot of these tunes often. So great.
Come on, who else even approaches the level of expertise of Hendrix? The ONLY thing this album is missing is the greatest Rock & Roll song of all time, which is on Electric Ladyland. (you figure it out)
Arguably one of the best debut albums off all time. Hendrix busted 😏 on the scene with screaming blues licks and a personality like no other. His other albums for sure were more robust, dynamic, refined and better sounding but the debut always gets me. Its that rootsy blues drenched psychedelic maddness sound. 5 star album always.
This would be my entry for the best debut album ever. The best he did by a country mile and hard to imagine much of modern rock music without this. Nothing to add apart from the fact that do listen to it on headphones as the stereo mixing is full on.
Wonderfull
Loved it. I had heard Jimi before on the radio my whole life. I got a little stoned put on some good headphones and had an experience with this album. Incredible.
Like Jimi’s other two proper LPs this is an easy 5 star album. It just doesn’t sound like anything before or much since. The otherworldly guitar is an obvious standout, but the stellar drumming/bass and surreal lyricism shouldn’t be ignored. Purple Haze is as incredible today as it probably was in the 60’s. There are many other great tracks throughout the journey, and while it could be argued the album is too long it’s never laborious to listen to. Red House is a tremendous closer.
Exceptional guitaring from Mr H, vibe is top notch
I have experienced Jimi Hendrix. Genius.
Here's a question I posit to nobody in particular: Is Jimi Hendrix being forgotten about culturally in a way that other historically great rock acts have not? It sure seems to me to be that way, and I'm unsure of why. Anyway, his talent and style is on full-blown display on this album -- which, to be clear, is made up purely of absolute bangers. There are, of course, well-known classics like 'Hey Joe', 'Purple Haze' and 'Fire', but beyond that you have tracks like 'Highway Chile', with a riff so simplistic and gnarly that it would make early-era Led Zeppelin jealous. You have 'Red House', a track that sounds like it single-handedly transitioned blues into the rock genre. 'Manic Depression' is a track that sounds like it was written in 2027, not 1967. Again, I bring up the thing about Jimi Hendrix's legacy because I'm not sure young people listen to (or even know about) Jimi Hendrix. I mean, I guess young people don't really listen to rock music period, so it makes sense... But Jimi Hendrix is an absolute legend, and 'Are You Experienced' is his greatest produced feat.
Brings back memories. Loved it
Day 0017/1001 of One Album a Day / Listened to whilst: walking my dog Just noticed whilst submitting this rating that I listened to the wrong version, whoops. Still phenomenal nonetheless. Favourite tracks: Purple Haze, Hey Joe, The Wind Cries Mary / Fire / Third Stone From The Sun / Can You See Me / Remember / Red House
Nobody was doing what Jimi was doing in 1967. The pure power and sexual energy he injected into the guitar was absolutely unprecedented and absolutely blew other musicians other professional musicians of the time out of their damn shoes. Jimi didn’t make his guitar weep, he made it sing. So often tunes of the 60s become very much a product of their time. Are You Experienced is so pure that it could be released at anytime and still feel fresh and slightly alien. Easy 5.
YES! Are You Experienced is the missing link of psychedelic music that I've been searching for the last 750 albums. Are You Experienced is the epitome of psychedelic rock as far as I'm concerned. Jimi Hendrix balances rock and psychedelia just right, so even if you aren't a big fan of psychedelic music (and I understand why), this album is accessible and welcoming. Hendrix grabs you with his hooks and lyrics. It doesn't hurt that he entices the listener with some sultry blues like in "Hey Joe." This album contains most of Hendrix's biggest songs, which are indeed great, but I found "Third Stone From The Sun" to be perhaps the most noteworthy. This song has Hendrix playing around in more of an experimental fashion. Maybe it was because I've heard the big hits so many times before, but it felt so fresh to hear something authentically Jimi that I hadn't heard before.
Amazing album. Need this on vinyl someday.
"Purple Haze", "Hey Joe", "Fire", "The Wind Cries Mary", and "Love Or Confusion " are some of the most iconic Rock 'N Roll songs of all time. Combine that with arguably the greatest guitarist of all time, and dare I say an elite drummer, this album is one of the greatest of all time. Favorite Song: "Hey Joe"
Few debut albums have had such impact and influence that Are You Experienced has. Jimi is part of Music Mythology and this is a huge reason why. His story is nigh unbelievable and the tales of his recording sessions are just as wild. Jimi planted a flag in the sand for Rock/Blues/Psychadelia and let it fly proudly.
Just a master musician. I’m not sure what I can say about Jimi that hasn’t already been said.
I'd give this album 6 Stars if I could (6 out of 5)
bangers all over this
So many iconic songs sprinkled throughout this album plus the impact this had on the evolution of rock music lift this effort to five stars for me.
Don’t need to say much.
Hold kæft de kunne skrue nogle albums sammen
Jimi er ret god på giddar, 5 stjerner! Spændende valg ikke at have Purple Haze, Hey Joe eller The Wind Cried Mary på UK udgaven. US udgaven har bedre numre, men synes egentlig UK udgaven flyder bedre, det var en fejl ikke at åbne med FoxEy Lady på US udgaven. Det var en fornøjelse at høre begge
Amazing album with amazing songs.
# Album Name: Are you experienced # Artist: Jimi Hendrix # Rating: 5/5 # Comments: I remember buying this album as a young lad on CD many decades ago. At the time, i knew i liked it, but didnt really understand why. Then as the years went by you begin to understand. This album is special. Imo, its jimmys best album. What an opening track with purple haze. Could an opening track be much better? im not so sure. The quality of the music throughout this album is Grade A shit. I bet Eric Clapton was gutted when he heard this burst onto the scene. Fuck me, that would have been a kick in the balls. Thankfully though, Jimmy brought this banger to our shores and lives were changed forever. Long live the guitar GOAT. Great stuff. # Top Tunes: Too god damn many to name. Standouts are Purple Haze, Hey Joe, Wind cries mary, Foxey Lady, FIRE. # Would I listen to it again? Certainly.
What can I say? It's an all time great.
This still is an amazing recording with so many classic Hendrix greats
Superb
Imagine hearing this when it first came out. It's slightly harder to wrap your mind around what that would have been like only because you've been hearing it and all the others inspired by it for so long, but it's still a mind bending experience to hear this for the first time in its entirety no matter the age or year.
Non c’è nulla da aggiungere
Le 5 stelle più facili del mondo.
Another what can i say that hasn't been said album. It's place in history is set. And it's been on my rotation list heavily for awhile
1 million
Madre, stacked. Hey Joe is lights out.
The American release is way superior to the UK release. However, there's a few great tracks missing that were only on the UK release originally. Spotify has this covered with the extended American version that pretty much has everything in one place. It's a fantastic album from start to finish. Even though some of the songs here have been played to death, they still retain their original sparkle. It has to be a full five stars for this amazing debut.
CLASSIC.
Imagine that you are in 1967 and the guitarists you are used to listening to are Eric Clapton, George Harrison, BB King... You turn on the radio and suddenly the first thing you hear are the first notes of Purple Haze... That changes everything! There was Rock Music before Hendrix and after Hendrix. Even today, if a kid decides to learn to play the guitar, he will come across Hendrix at some point in his learning. That's how great this guy was for music... And this album is the pinnacle of his work. An album that perfectly summarizes and presents him as an artist. 5 stars, of course.
This was exceptional. I am surprised because I didn’t really enjoy Electric Ladyland (which I think is more critically acclaimed). While this is less experimental, it’s more palatable, allowing me to fully appreciate the incredible guitar playing.
Final Jimi Hendrix album on this list. All 5 stars
Another 5 for Jimothy. Consistently great.
I appreciate this album so much. First of all, it's just so good. Second of all, I think so many of the bands I love that use a lot of fuzz, wah, and feedback pedals can be traced back to Jimi Hendrix and this album.
I love this record. No one really played guitar like Jimi Hendrix did. Its not the electric blues, its almost the fuzzy blues. Even beyond the effects on his guitar, its fuzzy. The lyrics are fuzzy and then just the style in which he plays is really fuzzy. It's certainly not linear. Its different from say, Jerry Garcia's take on the blues, where he's kind of playing inverted scales with slight key changes. Jimi is kind of playing traditional blues, soul, gospel, rock n' roll, but then you kind of get lost in it the longer that he goes. Maybe its the combo of bends, slides and wah that he's using, but it kind of just takes you on a journey where its very easy to get lost. Its brilliant. Maybe its that his band is really small, and there are no keys? Its so heavy on guitar, but he uses it for such a large sound that you don't really need anything else. His style doesn't really sound like anyone else. You can hear all of the influences but its more like ingredients that got mixed into something totally different. I think one of the biggest tragedies in modern music is that we lost Jimi Hendrix so young.
I've always encountered Jimi Hendrix in almost every context except his studio albums. Individual tracks, live performances (Monterey, Woodstock, namely) and even a posthumous release ("Valleys of Neptune"). Hell, I first heard "Spanish Castle Magic" in the original "Guitar Hero" as an instrumental and didn't know it had lyrics until later. But I've always loved Hendrix, and loved what I've heard. Some of my favorites of his are on this album, so I was excited. And he didn't disappoint. There isn't much new to say about Hendrix. He's one of those virtuosos that, especially since he died so young, has been talked about and dissected and analyzed and idolized in the 50-plus years since his death that, not unlike the Beatles, there's hardly anything original left to say. He's iconic, he's one of the best to ever pick up a guitar, and he's unforgettable. I would like to note here, though, that his stylistic range here both as a vocalist and a guitarist is amazing to witness. He can shred through something as wild and fun as "Fire," playing fast and with such incredible energy and conveying excitement with his voice in a way that is simply infectious. Then, on the same record and with just as much ease, he can play something as tender and soulful as "The Wind Cries Mary" with just as much passion and expertise. More still, he can absolutely demolish an audience with something as hard and unforgiving as "Purple Haze." The thread tying all these songs together, regardless of genre, feel, style, or tone, is precision. He plays everything with such precise intent to the point where you could tell me he could make a guitar quack like a duck and I'd believe you. Truly one of a kind. It's also more than worth calling out his band. In Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell, Hendrix had a band that was almost on his level. I say almost because, well, Hendrix is talked about as a legend and, while the other two are certainly masters of their instruments, are not remembered quite the same way. Nevertheless, the energy they bring does match that of Hendrix and is vital to the success of the their sound. You need only listen to "Fire" for proof of this. The bass line on that song really drives everything underneath the guitar. The drums are absolutely manic and provide the kind of agile energy needed for a song titled "Fire" and with as quick a riff as it has. It's perfection. I couldn't have been happier with my 300th album for this project. I don't know what else to say. Five stars. Standout Tracks: Manic Depression, Hey Joe, Love or Confusion, The Wind Cries Mary, Fire, Are You Experienced?
Pure genius from a true musical wizard
Not disappointed to see this pop up. I know I rail on about being tired of this genre of music from this era...but this is Jimi, man! Starting out with Purple Haze is FIRE. Does it get worse after that? IT DOES NOT! The next two songs are Manic Depression and Hey Joe! Although it doesn't seem to get the same love as the other two, Manic Depression might be the best song on the album, for my money. But SURELY it falls off after that, right? Well, dear reader, do YOU consider songs like Love or Confusion, Fire, or Foxey Lady "falling off?" How about Are You Experienced or Highway Chile? This album spawns hit after hit after hit. If I were going to be nitpicky, I'd say the album doesn't *have* to be an hour and a quarter with 18 songs. So sure, there are a couple here that don't quite live up to the all-time greatness of the rest, but does that drop the totality of the album out of the 5 star stratosphere? Dear reader, it does not.
Wish I could give 6 stars. Mind blowing, timeless, forever changing electric guitar.
Welp. I listened to the UK version and I was going to A/B it to the US version I have... But no need... The UK is a five star banger anyway and no real need to campare fivers. I probably slightly prefer the US, maybe because it has more of the well known material or that I'm just used to that version. But quite frankly, my least favorite track on the set is on both versions "Love or Confusion" and it's not a dog by any means anyway. Not my topper most, but way up there (10) ★★★★★
This is an all time favorite for me. I got into Hendrix when I was in my teens -- probably like 15-ish. I bought a cassette that had Are You Experienced? on one side and Axis: Bold as Love on the other. I used to listen to it on my Walkman while mowing my grandma's lawn. In retrospect, it helped shape a lot of my musical tastes -- notably my appreciation of fuzz guitar, but also really got me into more music from the 60s as well as more blues based stuff. For being lumped into the blues rock scene, this is a surprisingly diverse album. Personal favorite track is "I Don't Live Today". 5 stars.
Hey man, this Hendrix chap is pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty,, pretty, pretty, pretty good. UK version with bonus tracks for the best sequencing.
Purple Haze Manic Depression Hey Joe I Don't Live Today The Wind Cries Mary Fire 3rd Stone from the Sun Foxy Lady Are You Experienced? Stone Free
It seems to me that this could easily be a greatest hits album. This guy was just in the zone creatively and fun to listen to track to track all the way to the end.
The best 60s psych album by miles. It combines deep roots in American electric blues & RnB, British flower-power aesthetics, genius pop rock songwriting, casually revolutionary guitar playing, high energy fuzz, trippy studio recording effects, and a dangerous dose of pure charisma.
One of the most influential albums, and it still holds up.
Are You Experienced is Jimi Hendrix's debut album. It is one of the defining albums of the psychedelic era, and regarded as one of the very best albums of all time. Hendrix was one of the true guitar virtuosos in rock music; his skillful playing style and extensive use of effects expanded the range of sounds made by the electric guitar. In addition, Hendrix was a gifted songwriter, whose work became a central part of psychedelic rock. Are You Experienced includes a few of Jimi's early hits, like the "Purple Haze," "Hey Joe," and "The Wind Cries Mary." Jimi's intense, expressive guitar work would make any songs well known. The incredible songwriting has made these - and the rest of the tracks on this album - into among the most famous songs in popular music.
Literally more than half the album and classic rock radio staples. It’s amazing. And not just the guitar heroics - the range of music is remarkable.
This is the one album that everyone should hear before they die.
Has any artist ever produced a better maiden voyage than Jimi Hendrix? https://open.substack.com/pub/richcain/p/project-1001-are-you-experienced?r=4ztyq&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&showWelcomeOnShare=false
Fabulous. Welcome to the guitar solo...
I wore that record out! One of the few in my collection on Discogs rated in Fair condition!
One of the biggest challenges to learning the guitar (or any instrument) is to play with *feeling*. Rather than just hitting the right notes at the right times, you let your emotions, your life experiences, whatever is calling you to play these notes in this moment flow from your heart down your arm through your fingertips and into the instrument. Jimi Hendrix is second to none in playing with feeling. The soulfulness in each guitar lick, the endearing timbre of his talk-singing style, the stripped-back percussion that embraces the guitar without overpowering, all cultivate a liveliness, genuineness, and intimacy that one finds all too rarely in music. It feels like Jimi is here in the room, singing and shredding for me and me alone.
Nobody else has ever sounded like they can conjure an earthquake at a whim like Hendrix does.
My contrarian nature makes me reluctant to give a Classic Rock Classic full grades. But I have to speak my Guitar Guy truth. Nobody does it like Hendrix, to the point that I’m not sure I even consider him Influential in the way that we like to call some guys Influential. Has anyone ever really figured out how he did what he was doing and built on it? I don’t think so. It’s hard to imagine hearing this when it first came out. But it’s even kinda hard to imagine hearing it for the first time now, ya know?
I am experienced. No one has ever been able to catch the sound these 3 had. It’s Made unique not just by Jimi’s electric and idiosyncratic guitar style but also by the thunderous and cloudy backdrop of the rhythm section. It was a sound so just represented by these 3 musicians that anybody making music or playing guitar in a similar way is immediately identified as a copy.
I am happy to have this experience, the tracks are each well-crafted musically. Hendrix earns his position as one of the greats. Favorite track: "Purple Haze"
you might be cool, but you'll never be Are You Experienced cool
This may be too bold to say, but Jimi is decent at playing the guitar. Possibly underrated!
And so it seems that The Hendrix Experience finally clicked with me *today* - after just 45+ years of digesting and playing rock music.... I grew up on guitar-based music, have played professionally for decades, etc, I just never got into JHE songs at all. I honestly do think my dislike was heavily based around the lousy mix and the hits I know all too well immediately sound so much goddamn better than they ever did on ~Rock101 back in 1982 - holy hell. With this album having been remixed/remastered (which is too-often nothing at best and a shitty overly-compressed money grab at worst) it feels like I'm hearing it all for the first time, even though 5 or 6 of these songs have been big hits since before I was born. Not much else to say - it's awesome, the *band* were great, and there really was nothing like this before 1967 to prepare the world. It's not my favourite music of all-time but my all-time favourite music would not have been made without this. Ergo it has to be a 5... 9/10 5 stars.
¿El mejor debut de la historia? Posiblemente. ¿La mejor banda de la historia? Seguramente. Thrid stone from the sun es una alucinante viaje... Are you experienced otro aún mayor. Peppers y Magical Mistery Tour, Forever Changes y Da Capo, The Velvet Underground y White light/White head, Surrealistic Pillow,The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, The Who Sell Out, Days of Future Passed, Disraelí Gears, Bee Gees´ First, Younger Than Yesterday, Evolution y Butterfly, Safe as milk, I never loved a man the way i love you y Arrives, Something Else, Scott, Bee Gees´ First (en realidad el segundo), Wild Honey, Sunshine Superman o Happy Together...
Genius - great singing, great playing, wonderful songs, and massively inventive in terms of sound. Still a thrilling listen
A masterpiecee. A revolution. And it’s still my 3rd favorite Jimi record. After listening through for the first time in ages it may move back into second favorite just for Manic Depression and the title track. One of the things Jimi never got enough credit for was his songwriting and overall contribution beyond his guitar playing. That man wrote some incredible songs.
an album that makes you feel like a bad B
Yeah baby, instant feels of groooove!
Great! Want to listen again
Modern rock and roll as we know it would Not exist without Joni Hendrix
This may not quite hit perfect for me on a continuity and vision side. But damn if it isn't perfect for influence. Jiminy went solo, with this debut and changed the guitar. This sound in '67 blew everyone apart then and for generations going forward. Entire genres were formed because ears heard these sounds. Name one guitarist after this that wasn't influence. Jimi was a force unto himself and made everyone experience this one.
Great album. Lots of timeless hits on here as well.
Legendary
This is probably a 4 for pure enjoyment, but its significance and influence (and being a debut!) give it at least 1 bonus star.
This album not only broke new ground in exploring the sounds that it was possible to get out of an electric guitar, it pushed the boundaries of rock music genre mashups with the highlight being the sci-fi epic Third Stone From the Sun which veers wildly from acid rock to free jazz noodling to total freak out. Legend has it that Jimi liked to play so loudly in the studio that the neighbours complained about the noise. Another artist who died far too young.
I am experienced, indeed.
A personal favorite.
Apparently there are two versions of the album, an US and UK version. The Spotify album includes both versions' songs, while also adding three tracks not originally on any of the versions. The US version was better, and the review will focus on the original US version. This was my first time listening to Hendrix, and I've heard so much about his legendary guitar skills. I was blown away, and the psychedelic fused composition was perfect. His themes are both cosmic and very grounded, with great introspection and the use of clever metaphores. Best song: The Wind Cries Mary Worst song: Third Stone From The Sun
I've heard these songs so many times. Still takes me by surprise that is an album, not a compilation. It must have truly blown minds in 1967. The playing is off the scale. I'm listening to the UK version. May This Be Love stands out on this listen. Truly excellent.
Now this is the type of album this list was made for.
I was nervous going into this album because I was afraid it would fail to live up to the legend and even my memory of listening to it with my dad. I should not have feared. It’s brilliant. It was brilliant, and it still is. It’s raw, but precise. It sounds perfectly done without feeling overproduced. It is rock and psychedelic and real blues. I loved every minute.
1. Is it tomorrow or just the end of time? 2. I know what I want but I just don’t know 3. Where you’re gonna run to now? 4. My heart burns with feeling 5. Don’t ever change your ways, fall with we for a million days 6. Feel like I’m livin’ at the bottom of a grave 7. Will the wind ever remember the names it has blown in the past? 8. Let me stand next to your fire 9. Your people I do not understand 10. You make me wanna get up and scream 12. Not necessarily stoned but beautiful 13. Stone free to ride the breeze 14. You must be losing you sweet little mind 15. In love or war you can lose your glory 16. You better come home like you supposed to do 17. Kiss you for my supper
All time classic with banger after banger. Great album!
Of course I’m experienced ! (I say as a LIE 😈)
Easily the group's best album. Every song is phenomenal, Hendrix has ample space to showcase his incredible guitar playing and his songwriting abilities.
Goat 🎸🤘🐐
So cool. An obvious visionary.
It's a classic what can you say
You know, I’ve not traditionally been a Jimi guy - nothing against him, he just wasn’t regularly in my rotation - but I’ve really enjoyed both the albums I’ve got from him so far! Obviously he’s an innovator and virtuoso on the guitar, but I think I’ve learned that people also aren’t talking enough about how his music is FUN. These songs are just fun and catchy! It’s good pop music! I loved this album, I listened to it twice yesterday.
Wonderful 👍
One of the best albums ever? Yeah probably
One of the great guitar albums of all time, and well-structured melodies featuring very few musicians but lots of layers.
One of the best rock albums of the 60s. Jimi, Noel, and Mitch do Ana amazing job ob their debut. Although it is no Electric Lady land, this is still great and a classic for a reason. RIP Jimi, Noel, and Mitch.
10/10
Two Hendrix albums in a week? Not much else to add since it's all great. I like this album slightly more than "Electric Ladyland", so I'll give it a half-star over that one. Twenty-eight stars.
Days after I gave a shockingly low 2 star rating to Electric Ladyland, this album shows up to set the record straight. This one is a genuine 5 star effort.
Okay, I don't know anymore which album in Hendrix' discography is my favourite. What's important, is that Jimi is one of the best artists from that era. I'm not planning to listen to his records on a daily basis anymore, but he still holds a special place in my heart. Great album, top 10 on this list.
This is THE album you must hear before you die. I have been experienced, and I believe everyone should be experienced, and I want to be experienced for the first time again.
One of the greatest to ever do it. I wish we got more. I love the distortion on here.
Great album
Three bushy haired men in psychedelic clothing staring through a fish eye lens, blending through a eye catching combination of yellow and purple. Most people's first impressions of The Jimi Hendrix Experience are of this blasting on record shelves amidst all the other colorful album covers of the period it was released, that fabled year of 1967. And I cannot help but wonder what it was like when the needle hit the groove for the first time as the riff of Purple Haze burst out of the speakers. And everything else that followed tumbled outwards. And onto history. Are You Experienced?, perhaps without complaints, could very well lay claim to being the greatest debut album in rock history in large part due to the magnitude of its aftermath, where the world bore witness to the full fledged bombast of a guitarist who wound up changing everyone's game plan. Alongside the equally important (and game) bassist and drummer in Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell, respectively, an unforgettable experience in discovering, forming, playing and globe-trotting still reels in the cultural consciousness nearly sixty years on. Are you experienced? Well, I am.
Half the tracks on this are amazing, the rest are just really great. Jimi is one of my favourites, but I’ve never seen the albums themselves as flawless. Still gotta give it a 5
Good
Perfect pedicure soundtrack today, although it was hard to keep myself from dancing. Can you imagine this being your debut album? Insane.
Rock. Truly a classic. I love these albums that are essentially a “greatest hits” collection, just so many good songs from beginning to end. Even the songs I hadn’t heard before sounded stellar. Just perfect.
I listened to the whole record with such ease as I was doing other things on my laptop but found myself constantly going back to replay some songs from the start as I really enjoyed them. The guitar playing from Jimi is incredible. Brilliant album!
Jimi's album of exclusively bangers. Spotify has the US version, whereas I am more used to the UK running order. Got to say the US one works so much better. Red House, Remember and Can You See Me are by no means bad songs, but well, Purple Haze, Hey Joe and the Wind Cries Mary. I mean need I say more. Not just that but it simply flows, waxing and waning at the right time. The UK version has one too many noodley-woodley songs in a row instead of interspersing them with punchy snatches of rock, which has the effect of elevating both. The US cover art is miles better also. Sequencing is important!
Not sure if it's a coincidence to get this one on the anniversary of his death. Incredible album he really is in a totally different level. Purple haze still hits so strongly, as for deep cuts I loved the Wind Cries Mary. Even when the songs blur together it's a really incredible record
My mind is in a Purple Haze after that Experience. It was Fire.
Hot take: "Manic Depression" is the greatest waltz of all time.
Come on man. Giving this anything other than a 5 would be insane. Still not sure if it’s better than electric ladyland (they’re both amazing), but nonetheless it is a GREAT album. Where else can you get such terrific songwriting, guitar playing, and lyrics from one person at such a time? George Harrison, although great himself, could never be on the same level, both guitar-wise and (arguably) lyrically as Hendrix. Eric Clapton did have the guitar prowess but not the same emotional capability of Hendrix. Jimi Hendrix was a huge inspiration to so many and a well respected artist, but still took the time to give a story in every album. Every song. It was personal, and it was inspirational. He took the medium in places few saw possible and ways aspired to be replicated for decades. He was open about drug problems and personal issues up until his death, may he rest in peace. This record specifically is classified as one of the best of all time for a reason. Not a single miss here, though The Wind Cries Mary and Highway Chile are personal favorites. And this album was such a splash in the rock landscape at the time, though psychedelic rock wasn’t unheard of. The likes of the Beatles and Pink Floyd had already played around with it before Hendrix debuted. But there’s a difference: Hendrix kept it alive and fresh. He wasn’t doing it for the sake of something cool, he wanted to challenge the norms of classic rock and make defining statements in music history to be written. The psychedelic rock genre today would be nowhere without Hendrix’s willingness to shape culture in an expertly done way. And that’s what it all comes back to. Sure he changed rock. Sure he checked the artists around him. Sure he made award winning albums. But what it all comes down to is how he did it. Not boastfully, but with the technical mastery and patient skill of a band front runner musicians across all genres and decades would only expect from hundreds of years of experience. So in that sense I guess, Hendrix answered his own question. Are You Experienced? Hell yeah, more experienced than a life time could give.
My fav so far 💦💦💦💦💦
Great album - includes classics like Foxey Lady and Purple Haze. Amazing guitar, lyrics, and beats throughout.
whew that guitar is HAWTT
This album rocks. Classic albums can be overrated but this hits.
What a first studio album this is!! It could easily be a greatest hits album. You won’t see a better opening than purple haze, manic depression and Hey Joe. Just brilliant. So many hits that remind me of going out when I was 18-21 and are the reasons, I love music. Stone Free being the biggest. I love it. Its a 5/5 easily Favourite song: Manic depression, Stone free Least favourite: None, all songs are fantastic Album artwork: Perfect album cover
How can you give this anything but 5 stars? It’s an iconic album, and top to bottom filled with great songs. As a Seattle Mariners fan, “Fire” will always make me smile since it’s played after every home win. But “Purple Haze” and “Hey Joe” are also fantastic, plus “Are You Experienced?” ends the album on such a different note, while possibly being the most brilliant song on the entire album. I could go on and on, but I’ll stop now and give it 5 stars.
My least favorite of the Jimi studio albums is still a gem
So many hits on this album, how could it not be a 5?
his best album 8/10
A landmark album...
I am experienced, Jimi! There's nothing I can say about this album that it can't say for itself, though I would remind people that he was 23 when this album was written and 24 when it was released. Unrivaled.
I knew sweet FA about Jimi besides Purple Haze and Along The Watchtower, and I'm glad I sat down with this one. Great lyricism and the band as a whole works great while Jim shreds, I Dont Live Today stuck out to me as an album favorite.
Excellent album. Banger after banger. What a great listen. This is undoubtedly a 5.
Who do you think I am to say something about this album?
