Reviews (page 6 of 11)

It's definitely not my new favorite album but there are definitely some interesting things in it. I really what this sounded like to people in 1975 -- I suspect elements of it have become more common since then so it may have really stood out at the time.

Beautiful.

Good album! I can really see why this is considered a groundbreaking album. I hear nirvana, sublime, the eagles and more in these songs. Favorite was “Free Money”, and only song I really didn’t like was “Birdland” sounded a bit like Courtney Barnett, and that’s a bad thing. Wanted to eat this a 3.75, so that means a 4!

(Classic rock / Art rock) Great album with elements of punk rock & poetry and a unique vocal delivery. Birdland is a stand-out track, featuring distorted guitar that borders on noise rock. 8/10

I haven't really connected with Patti Smith, I think mostly because I don't know a lot of her story - I know that and her poetry have been a big thing for others [cough cough, Emily]. That said, I see why this is an album you need to listen to! I especially liked 'Free Money'. I couldn't take the time I wanted to more deeply focus on lyrics so I have to recognize that. But on a top level they felt powerful and I really got a kick out of the music - which felt of its era, yet transcending it. You also have to recognize the influence she had on musicians of her time and generations of punks afterwards deserves some serious respect. Adding this to a rotation so I can keep listening and thinking!

good stuff, nice short listen and the extra tracks on that "deluxe version" are not bad either

GLORIA! Reminds me of high-energy French pop, kinda sick

Better than I thought

Would’ve been 5 but it made me wet my pants

elegie top song liked the vocals, but the instrumentals were clashing and very of the time

I enjoyed this album her voice would sometimes sound strange to me but i like the instruments

Seems very ahead of its time (75!) and can hear later artists this album must have influenced

Great rock and roll. Great vocals. Great energy. A solid album with some odd little talks

actually good

8.4/10

niceeeeeeeeee!!

Decent record, couple of really good songs but nothing really grabbed me.

What a difficult set of songs. Musically I had no problem jumping on board between the piano and rock guitar, its very good. Vocally is where I got hung up, I'm not super particular on very in depth and clever lyrics, and definitely not poetry. That wouldn't be an issue on it own but she is specifically not trying to let the lyrics blend into the song in a traditional sense on a lot of songs. She wants you to confront them head on when she rattles off stories or metaphors in her high nasal delivery and that creates a struggle for my attention away from the music. When it works well I feel like she occupies a similar space to Stevie Nicks and everything comes together really well. When it doesn't i sit with my brow furrowed trying to keep an open mind. The songs were the worst on the first listen so I imagine they will age better on more and more listens but for sure a difficult album.

i may have listened to “Gloria” before and probably had no idea this version was by Patti Smith??? (how lame of me) i don’t have much to say about the album besides it being pretty decent

favs: redondo beach birdland kimberly gloria: in excelsis deo (live) redondo beach (live) birdland (live) free money (live) break it up (live) elegie (live) rating 2.5/5

This album is kind of a mixed bag for me. I like her best when she is making something new out of something old, like her takes on “Gloria” and “Land of 1000 Dances”. The shorter originals, like “Redondo Beach”, “Free Money” and “Break It Up” are also not bad. However, when she channels her inner beat poet chanteuse, like on “Birdland” and vast parts of the “Land” medley, she loses me.

no me termina de enganchar la pati pero reconozco que el album esta muy bien 7/10

It was fine. Didn't love it, didn't hate it. 2.5/5. Raising to 3.

How do I do this without feeling disrespectful? Listen, I know Patti is a pivotal figure in punk rock history, but I just don't really get this album. I guess 1975 was still kinda photo-punk and maybe we just collectively decided that this wasn't exactly the right direction? Maybe she goes on to make a bunch of more punk punk? All I can say is that I listened through this one at least twice and just couldn't get excited for it. On the music alone, I'm a soft 3 stars. Considering her influence and perceived importance, I'm like a soft 3.5 stars.

What an excellent cover of G.L.O.R.I.A. "Land" is a solid second fave track on the album. And Elegie is so moody.

I like horses.

That's a cool cover. You can hear some Lou Reed here.

ikke helt min greie

I have been meaning to listen to this album since I listened to her memoirs a few months ago. Such an interesting album like nothing I've ever heard. Patti Smith is very cool.

Patti Smith’s Horses was fine, but it never hit me the way its reputation suggests it should. I get why people love it, and I’ve got nothing bad to say about it. But I don’t have much praise for it either. It just kind of exists in that middle ground for me. So while everyone else is gushing over it, I’m over here in the corner refreshing the page, waiting for the next album so I can move on.

Not my style, but not bad music.

- I liked this, but I wish I could understand the lyrics better because what I could understand was cool. Her vocal affectations make it a little hard to hear what she's saying. And, they make her sound like someone else, but I can't really place who - sometimes Debbie Harry, but I keep thinking that's not who I'm trying to think of. Maybe a mix of Debbie Harry and Television? - I think I liked the energy and confidence of this more than the actual music, which didn't really leave much of an impression even though it had that Velvet Underground feel to it. - I'd say a 3.5 - I definitely liked this more than a lot of other 3s that I gave, at least.

terrible voz y la usa bien de protagonista, buen disco un poco corto y con temas muy largos. 2 se destacan nomas.

It really grew on me

This was kind of disappointing? Not that it was bad, just felt like it had gotten overhyped for what I felt about it, it was fine. Maybe a little too spoken word poetry-esque for my taste? "Gloria: In Excelsis Deo" and "Free Money" were the standouts for me

Didn’t hate it. Probably won’t come back to it.

A good album, but I don't love it. It was largely quite standard 70s rock with some more ambitious or punkish moments but I don't really see why it's considered a punk album Others have said it, this does feel like one you're supposed to like but it didn't do much for me Some occasional annoying vocal moments like when she sounds like the seagulls in Finding Nemo on the first track and that weird drawling thing on Birdland Highlights: Track 9, Kimberly

It took me a few attempts to make it through. It was fine, but I didn't like it at all.

I don't think I get this one the way that other people do, it's cool at least, it rocks, no issue but can't really join in on the cult following that it seems to have, its energy is pretty fun though its actual sound isn't particularly captivating

I know I listened to this album, but I can’t remember a whole heck of a lot about it. I remember it being an interesting blend of punk and folk, but I’d definitely use “interesting” to describe this album over any other adjective. For better and for worse.

Hit and miss. Some of the tracks are decent, and I’m kind of into the arty feel of them. Others though are completely underwhelming and kind of boring. Bits of this come across as pretentious and I’m not into that. It’s interesting hearing the influence across this though, both before and after. There’s a very Velvet Underground feel to many tracks, and it’s easy to see the influence on later bands like Sonic Youth. 2.5 rounded up.

This was a great find. I was unfamiliar with Patti Smith, and to find this album was a treat. There's an obvious Bob Dylan influence, but what I hear most is a more angry Jim Morrison. Hearing the proto punk sound come through was great.

I didn't enjoy this. That said, I surmise value here because it's progressive-protopunk with a woman at the helm. Points for long-form compositions as acoustic poetry, with a unique edge. I'll go 3 since I've been such a cranky old man lately.

Not sure what I just heard! Kind of a wild ride.

paar bangers, ook wel paar vervelende nummers.

Eh, not really great.

Pas une si grande fzn

Bem mais ou menos

Don't mind it but it doesn't blow me away. It is a nice enough listen, and i do like her voice a lot it's very unique

Excited to finally take some time off to listen to Ms. Smith. This is pretty much as I expected - pretty freaking good, but not too interesting, so at least 3 strong stars for sure, 3.5 on RYM. But honestly this could be 4 as well. P.S. After a couple of revisits definitely one to REVISIT.

Raw, rough and distinguished. So many elements of style on this record, for something that's labeled as a Punk record. This is one I know I'm going to need to listen to again to fully grasp and appreciate it. The songwriting and musicianship is soft and easy most times, but the lyrics are gritty and unorthodox through and through. Off first listen, I like this one.

An album that I appreciate more than I actually enjoy. It isn't that it's bad, there's just nothing on here that compels me to regularly listen to it.

No matter how many times I listen to this album, I still feel like it needs another chance. Just seems to be not my thing. That said, Free Money seems to still out for me. Rating: 5/10 Favorite Song: Free Money

She is hit and miss for me. This wasn’t my fav album.

Has some great songs, but at some points its a bit too much of person talking over some postrock music(?). I do love some of the songs and think I'll appriciate it more with more relistens and reading into the lyrics. 1. Gloria: In Excelsis Deo 2. Kimberly 3. Free Money

Too folky for my taste. I like the tone of her voice though. Not too much to say about this

so much emotion. it holds up.

At times annoying, i feel like other albums of hers are probably better.

I don't really like Patti Smith. This album is good, has some powerful songs on there but she doesn't raise any emotion for me. It's fine.

🌕🌕🌕🌑🌑, though may well have been a 🌕🌕🌗🌑🌑 if I was in a worse mood So I only knew of Patti Smith, as it turns out, from a song title I will not be writing out here, but luckily I had forgotten long enough to leave my impression of Horses untarnished. One thing with Punk that seems to hold true even as far back as this proto-punk is that it can sound a little flat without a lot of drive and a properly monotone yell, and at its worst, I think Horses is that. Not at its worst, interestingly, are the nine-minute, fervent, spoken-word that I suspect have incited many an eye roll since the seventies. I, to my own surprise, kind of dug them—they're the kind of thing I think I was socialized to dislike but have really come around to now that I've fully embraced my own pretentiousness. The first and last songs are the only ones I can see myself coming back to frequently, but that's more than I was expecting from this album—really fun and exciting. This Patti Smith gal is really something, hope she doesn't have any controversial takes on race in her future! 1: Bad | 2: Okay, No Desire to Revisit | 3: Good, Conditionally (OR Inconsistent Mix of Qualities) | 4: Great (OR Technically amazing but missing the sauce emotionally) | 5: Amazing

It's fine, abrasive

Not completely my cup of tea, but the artistry here is really phenomenal. Patti Smith definitely deserves her iconic status.

I’d not heard this album before, something I should’ve listened to by now, as I’m totally aware of Patti, I’ve read a couple of her books…..this album very good in places, and yep, I enjoyed its force, and toughness

Interesting, country kinda sound

I don't own this album. I've never put it on myself, or played it in a jukebox. But, I don't mind when it comes on somewhere. When it's not on, I don't think about it.

Best Song: Free Money. I really like the segment around 1:30 where she starts singing over the drum roll that crescendos behind her. Worst Song: Redondo Beach. The surf rock / beach energy didn't seem to fit the vibe of the rest of the album. Overall: There is a raw creative energy that runs through this album. Everything feels thoughtful and purposeful. I respect the vision that the artist had in making it. It isn't common to have this quality of vocals, vocal artistry, and arrangement. That said, I sometimes wished there was less of a "rock" focus, and that she had instead staying in a quieter, more melancholy sound.

Interesting

Gotta love Patti Smith

A weird hodgepodge of Velvet Underground and other influences, 'Horses' has a challenging sound that warrants re-listens. Some of these songs are sprawling soundscapes and the album is diverse. Top tracks: "Birdland," "Gloria," "Break It Up"

It's always hard for me to get behind the spoken word aspect of albums like this, but otherwise, I enjoyed the music. The instrumentals were interesting (definitely see the Velvet Underground influence there), I didn't mind Smith's voice, and the lyrics were dynamic and ahead of their time. I see the influence it had on future artists, but I probably wouldn't give it another listen myself.

Ella es poesía

I kind of liked it. Definitely had some interesting lyrics.

"Gloria" is the only one here I particularly care for, I think it does a really good job of building up tension. The rest is sort of like, we're told that she's a punk predecessor, but she's not really punk in form, and the original spirit of punk was kinda anti-intellectual so that's not her either, so I'm not really sure where she comes in? "Redondo Beach" sounds like worse Blondie, the rest is in the vein of "Gloria" but doesn't grab me all that much.

Didn’t love this as much as I wanted to :( Patti is obviously SO influential but the album itself…idk. Gloria is a RIPPER of an opening track and Elegie is perfect but the stuff in the middle just felt kind of muddled to me

Really cool album that's a combination of punk and more classical solo rock. It's another case where this seems like a really important album and I get why it's here I just didn't like it as much as I expected to.

Low 3 stars. I really don’t like how whiny the vocals are at times, especially because at other points Patti Smith chooses to actually sing and it’s beautiful. I think what saves this album from being a 2 star for me are the instrumentals. There are some really beautiful and cool songs on here if you don’t pay attention to the vocals. I will say, I get the appeal and how this was seen as groundbreaking for the punk scene, due to how bold it is. Patti Smith is very poetic, but I just cannot deal with her whining and cadence. Makes it boring and hard to listen to, but can respect the history.

Album 174. Horses (https://open.spotify.com/album/0OeuSeP8wp8n8OuTqYb61C?si=rqGx21dmTIqt95UL38TJmg) — Patti Smith (1975) Okak, a week or two ago I added almost every Patti Smith's album to future listening (except this haha). That's her debut album, cool. Next couple days I'm finally gonna listen to all her albums. Basically, I already listened today Easter (https://open.spotify.com/album/1p6cWoueuunhpgy6131zAd?si=Da9GNi1oTfOD50EFPrHRlg) album too, it was great, I've loved Because the Night from that album for a long time. Well, back to Horses. I don't know how to describe this..minimalistic (a little bit) punk rock, but it's so raw that it becomes hard to listen sometimes. But poetry, poetry of Patti Smith is great. And the album has so much energy and passion. She has a very specific voice and I like it. 3/5 Liked: — Gloria: In Excelsis Deo — Free Money

There's something primal about this. It's the sound of a troubled woman excise her most personal demons in public. It's raw, sometimes almost uncomfortable, but also beautiful

This was more an exercise in poetry rather than music for me, but it’s hard to draw a line between poetry and music anyway. I like when people do weird things with their voices. But I’d say some songs were drawn out, but I think that makes sense if you view them as poetry rather than “songs”. Maybe, I will like it better if I listen again. 3/5 - 4/5

This album is a classic aparently but I never hear anyone talk abouth it. Lets see then. Well thats one hell of a voice. I dont think im a fan. She defitively listened to a lot of velvet underground. I hate this band. I dont like punk to begin with. I tried with this one but.. No... Not for me/5

A good listen

Kinda bluesy start then rips right into rock. And what’s that now?! Ode to Van Morrison?! This one song has convinced me that I definitely need to investigate further.

Partially known. Solid album.

Respected more than liked how melodramatic her vocals get (despite the great minimalist cover). Kimberly’s the best

Really like the first song. I don’t really like the almost her raw “talking” singing voice.

I really liked this album. Reminded me of Fiona Apple 7/10 but if i listen to it intently in a dark room, could be a 9 or even 10 Saved a Song? ----- ✅ Saved Album? ------ ✅ Will Listen Again? --- ✅

pop-rock, ya la primera se caga en el cristianismo, en general bastante alegres y movidas, se deja escuchar aunque tampoco mucho, 3/5

Didn't love or hate

Will need a second listen at some point! Loved all the nice piano intros and had some great lyrics but maybe just not my thing. Faves were Kimberly, break it up and elegie

3/5; fine album.

Was a beautiful mess!

Rock, 1975 -> 3

"Jesus died for somebody's sins, but not mine." A strong opening declaration!

I'm obsessed with Patti Smith's voice and more surprised I'd never heard of her before (I'm rather uncultured) but wow! A catchy song to open an album with but for some songs I found them unnecessarily long and repetitive, making them somewhat boring to listen to (but I enjoyed birdland! a bit bizarre to me but nonetheless entertaining) Favourite song on this album is probably free money for the catchy instrumental and I quite liked the vocals, but Horses was a very good listen) Overall, some songs were a bit long and boring and the stories told by her lyrics were intriguing and bizarre, but i was fun and the instrumentals were very enjoyable as well as the controlled and gradual start to each song and later the explosive and chaotic ending.

Fine! Interesting to see this labeled as punk.

I had never heard that before, I quite enjoyed it.

I get sick of her delivery every once in a while but the compositions she puts together on this album are really rocking. I'll have to give this one another listen someday.

ein horse

First song was fun, but it was downhill from there. I heard a live performance by her the other day and listened to her address the crowd. I lost a lot respect for her at that moment, which has affected my view of her music. She’s definitely not punk.

The influence this album had on punk is evident and I do like how she blended other styles of music to make this album. Smith is also clearly a brilliant lyricist with a poem-like quality to her lyrics but I think this just isn't my kind of music. Nothing wrong with it, it's a good album but not something I would add to my regular rotation although Free Money definitely is a highlight. This is an album I can see my opinion changing on after subsequent listening.

really well crafted, just not my exact cup of tea

pretty good. not quite my stuff

Shades of things to come - I hear elements of Patti Smith's voice in Debbie Harry, Sharon Van Etten, Kate Bush, all sorts of other fantastic musicians. Ultimately I didn't think the album itself was particularly memorable, but I could see it growing on me given enough time.

I hear in this a lot of artists I like more - Poe, PJ Harvey, Siouxsie, Tori, so on - but it is, unfortunately, Poetry. Music gets worse the closer it gets to Poetry. I'm glad I gave it another listen because I do like it more than I did on my initial attempt but a track like Birdland makes me want to give it the two I originally planned

Well written and performed, but not necessarily the most interesting

Great poetic punk rock.

My rating 2.6. Critics tell you this album needs to be respected. I respectfully disagree.

This had been on my long list for awhile. Really solid album. She's got a great voice and a poetry to her lyrics. Definitely worth a listen.

This one was hit or miss for me. Some of it was pretty good, but a lot of it was boring or unimpressive. I was expecting a bit more punk rock attitude from what I'd heard about Smith's influence and her place in the movement. Instead, it was a lot more artsy and poetic, with a couple ballad-like compositions in the mix. After this listen, I feel like maybe her music had more impact live than could be captured on a recording. I wouldn't say this was bad, but it didn't really do a lot for me. I'll put it on the borderline of OK and good. Overall: 2.75/5

Decent listen.

Raspy female rock vocals match 70s rock vibe. I never love the lingering discordant guitar solos but this felt “cool”.

Hatte am anfang echt Potenzial, aber leider hat es mich nicht ganz abgeholt. An Stellen war der heulerisches Gesang echt zu viel (anfang von Birdland z.b) 3/5

has its moments

Patti Smith and Bjork are 2 sides of the same coin

Ça me tentais pas vraiment d’écouter ce style là mais j’imagine que ça devait être cool d’entendre ça à l’époque

So this is the album with Redondo Beach!! Great + very creative musically. Loved something in every song. 4.5 stars cos the 0.5 needed a teney bit more dopamine scratching

I am slightly aware of Patti Smith, and I have 2 songs liked by her - with 1 song from this album ("Redondo Beach"). I can't remember why or when I first heard that song but I do like that. So, I'm very interested to dive deeper into this album. After 3 listens I ended up liking "Gloria", "Free Money", and "Elegie" - in addition to "Redondo Beach". The long spoken word parts of several of these songs remind me of the Jim Morrison/Doors "American Prayer" album - and not in a good way. Just didn't like most of that. Apparently this is supposed to be so ground breaking and innovative and influential. That might be, but it's not a perfect album by any stretch. It's just ok to my ears - having liked only half the songs. Liked songs on Spotify: 4/8 Rating: 3/5

It had glimmers of promise but too much talking over itself for me

Some interesting moments and ideas. The attitude is a very enjoyable fuck you… but also, no great songs.

Meh. Not for me. I’m not the audience.

I am going to be honest here, I had never listened to a Patti Smith album but I had read Just Kids, and that gave me the worat of impressions on her, how do people praise her??? . Ok, so I listened to the album and it is ...meh. The instrumental is good but her voice and interpretation does not help. Her fixation on death on the lyrics and her clear references on Rimbaud also make me feel like I am in a funky Portry reading. It is not bad, but it's not as great as they market her. Also, she is not punkthis is pop rock, she used so many good people on her band that it is hard to credit just on her her achievement (also she just got famous becsuse she tagged along with the famous guests in Chelsea Hotel). The song is OK, but I still think she is a horrible person. 3/5

It's definitely interesting. Far more interesting than her later work in my opinion. Not something I'll be following up on, but it really has 1975 New York vibes.

I can see why this album Is on this list, unlike many others in this 1001. However it’s not for me.

Not really my type.

STANDOUTS: Gloria, Free Money, Land I don't have much to say about this, but it is a very lesbian album, so here's the transcript for Billy On The Street - Lesbian Lightning Round. "Okay guys now it's time for a special lightning round today I'm running around New York with a pack of wild lesbians. They're going to chase after people with me and help them answer questions. I guess I can say I've heard of Patti Smith, but I am honestly not sure if I've ever listened to a single track of hers. That being said, her association with the CBGB-era was enough to pique my curiosity. It's a unique sound and not bad, but why all the praise for being a punk rock pioneer? It's not very punk, even compared to other stuff that was coming out at the time. I didn't love it, didn't hate it, but have no desire to ever return to it.

226/1089 i think this album was given to me at the wrong time. For some reason i just wasn’t really receptive to it/in the mood when i think it would otherwise be right up my street. There were parts that almost hooked me and i can appreciate it but I’ll have to revisit 65/100

Odd one. Not my vibe, but I respect what I feel like is true intent and passion.

I’m probably more into the idea of Patti Smith than I am into her music in real life. The lyrics are interesting, and the music isn’t bad, but it doesn’t really appeal to my musical sensibilities. 6.5/10

Very good singing voice but I thought the music was mostly quite meandering and dull

You can see why it influenced so many people. I still don't like her voice.

It was ok, but not sure i’d listen to again

Large animals that typically live on a farm, and can be used for sports, and transportation.

The live version is much better IMO. Not the biggest fan of her vocal style but I get why people are and what it meant at that point in history. Cool shit

Fijn album, mooie stem. Zou ik zeker nog eens luisteren

Couple of nice songs. Kind of interesting album, but not anything crazy

After 50 years, this album still holds up.

Hard to ignore Velvet Underground influence and despite its importance to the '70s NY scene, was a good 1 time listen to appreciate music history, but too much of the same.

"Jesus died for somebodies sins, but not mine" - what an opening line! Started off strong, her mumbling in Birdland was not for me Favs: Gloria, Redondo Beach, Kimberly

i didn't think it was anything special

Põnev ja kuidagi palju iseloomu näitav plaat. Siin ühtegi sellist bänger hitti pole, aga pika kuulamise peale ei tüdinenud sellest stiilist. Minu jaoks just täitsa piisavalt kiiksu, aga mitte midagi erilist. 3.4/5

Bob Dylan if he was a scene kid who discovered garage rock. After a 2nd and 3rd run through, I’m starting to get it more. The lyrics are deep, it’s raw as fuck and the vocals are jarring at times, but that’s the point. It gives me similar vibes to Dylan. Many people including myself are quick to write someone off because they don’t sound like you’d expect or want, but I think I see it now. So much influence. Free Money gives me 90’s alt vibes. Redondo Beat gives me Police and Cars Vibes. Favs: Free Money, Redondo Beat

I bet this absolutely raged at CBGBs back in the day.

Muy legendarion será, pero no es para mí.

Fine. Lyrics were kinda weird and all over the place. Thought she sounded vaguely like Bjork in parts.

Lots to enjoy, Kate Bush meets Leonard Cohen. But maybe a little clinical at times?

Enjoyed it but probably won't go back to it.

A few more listens and this could be a 4 star!

Loved the vibes and lyricism but found the instrumentals quite bland. Gloria was the easy highlight

Timelessly hot album cover? Check. Fascinating autobiography? Check! Excellent start to an album? Are my sins my own? Check! Have I spent probably 20 years trying to *like* this album? CHECK! CHECK! maybe someday.

I'll give her the round up, but truly, this was a 2.5. Birdland got very...spirited and I probably spoiled myself a little by reading about the album before listening because it's described so much as this like proto punk sorta poetry thing and I found it to be meandering and squonky?

An album that I’m SUPPOSE to love, but I don't. I appreciate Patti Smith and her lyrics and voice and that she was groundbreaking in the punk scene, so I feel like I must give it a 3, but all I really want to hear from her is Because the Night and Dancing Barefoot.

Hmmmm. I dunno. Certainly didn’t hate it. But it felt a little too pretentious for me. Like I’ve said with a lot of other punk adjacent stuff, I’m sure this would’ve done a lot more for me back in the 70s, but I did like some of the songwriting and I think smith has a very fun voice. But some of this kinda felt like slam poetry over rock riffs. All around meh?

I'm a big fan of a lot of the songs on this album and Patti Smith - however I can't say that I had listened to the whole album as a whole before and it did become a little much for me, I prefer the songs in little doses rather than a whole hour of it. I wanted to switch gears to something different a couple of times.

Good? I guess? Fine?

Very imaginative, upfront punk vibe, I can feel how it would inspire generations to come. I'd need a few more listens to really set in.

Liked the energy in this one.

Enjoyed some songs. Standout songs: Gloria:In Excelsis Deo Free Money Land: Horses/Land of a thousand dances/la mer(de)

Epic artist. Loved this album.

not my cup of tea but great dynamics and sound

Seminal certainly. Didn’t really do it for me

I can almost smell the velvet underground inspiration I thought I was going to like the album a lot more than I did after the first song, I actually enjoyed that one a lot. It just kinda deteriorated a bit from there. Will absolutely give Patti credit for her vocals, there’s so much talent there; they fit great on more upbeat songs and slower more melodious sounds. I just don’t think anything’s very catchy after the first couple songs, and I didn’t resonate with the lyrics all that much. I can 100% picture the person that would love this album and have it as one of the greatest of all time, it just ain’t me

Female proto punk, good sound, big on historical significance. Saw the 50th anniversary tour stop in Chicago, it was better live (with a 78 year old Patti Smith) than the studio version. I remember first listen didn't grab me, but 2nd and 3rd did. Probably favorite thing was Gloria (1st track) making a second appearance in Elegie (last song) as a kind of reprise. 3 1/2, but 3 for our purposes here.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard a better opening to an album. The first song got me so excited that I was really disappointed by every song after that. This album gets a 3 mainly for how amazing that first song was, the buildup in it was just phenomenal. I don’t really care about the rest of the album in all honesty.

There's a lot that could be said about this album, and the impact that it has on music as a whole. I mean she basically invented punk rock, new wave, and probably poetry as well... Smith’s debut album Horses is placed in the genre of punk rock, but somehow I feel that punk is kind of inaccurate. She certainly doesn’t sound like what punk became. It may be that ‘punk’ is simply a term used for music by artists who are determined to renounce conventional notions of ordered beauty. Adopting a minimalist, bratty, antiestablishment mindset. I don’t know, but to put Patti Smith in the same genre as the Sex Pistols and the Stooges feels criminal. Admittedly, I spent a good chunk of my listening time with this album deciding if I liked or not. I was a bit mixed on Patti’s voice and couldn’t tell if it was annoying or not. It did eventually grow on me. Lyrically, the songs were hit or miss. While I enjoyed something like Kimberly, Birdland was a little underwhelming. Honestly, most of the album felt like it was for a specific group of people. But most of the songs were enjoyable, despite not fully understanding the songs. Did I need to listen to this before I die? The impact of this album alone, makes it a definitely.

very cool

Fine music, but not my thing.

really different, 6.2, very fiona apple, portishead, bjork, joni mitchell, hole coded.. strong for the time period!!

I did like how well defined the album felt whilst being experimental (wow almost what art rock kinda is). Didnt speak to me tho

For me, not a fan of art rock experimental albums. But when I’m tired and don’t really care about anything. It just works better but not like great cause I’m not like a fan of it. There was a steady beat, her vocals were alright. Not to bad.

I know this album is iconic but it's never really clicked for me. Not bad, but also not great in my opinion. Favorite track: Free Money

Listening to Patti Smith felt like wandering through a chaotic city, each person passing by heightening my annoyance until the inevitable breaking point. The experience was a visceral anxiety attack—a blend of frantic rhythmic drums and chaotic oooo's, uueeerr's, and tooo's that mirrored my inner turmoil. Did I enjoy it? Probably not. But as a punk lover, I couldn't help but respect the raw honesty and emotional depth. This album captures the frustration and chaos of modern life, my life, making it a wild ride worth experiencing.

Getting tired of all the dad rock.

Very reminiscent of Velvet Underground. Some interesting songs and good lyrics.

3.9/5 godmother of punk

Jesus died for somebody’s sins but not mine

Would not buy

This was ok. Patti Smith gets a lot of love and I’m sure it’s well deserved, but listening to this album without doing any other research I thought it was just ok.

I’m admire this album and Patti Smith a lot. Incredibly important to the history of punk and everything after. Just not my favourite listen.

I really liked her memoir but her music? It’s aight.

Just kind of boring.

Meh . Alot of the songs felt like they dragged on forever but likeit wasnt horrible

Patti Smith is just one of those artists I've never really "got" for some reason. I know how much of a legend and trailblazer she is, so definitely appreciate that. And I feel like as a fan of punk and a lot of that genre of music, I should have liked her. But I just could never get into her. It was good to listen to this album and give her another shot, but it just isn't my thing.

Eh, it was okay.

she ANGRY fuck yeah

Really liked some songs, really disliked others

Patti was/is an incredibly influential musician and influenced many artists who music I really like. There was some really cool stuff on this album but some of this was tough to sit through. In particular "Birdland" reminded me of the avant-garde performance piece that Idina Menzel's character does in RENT. I've always assumed it was lampooning the art rock scene in general but this made me feel like Patti could've been direct inspiration.

Cool ballad album. Voice can be annoying. Need to listen again

Not bad.

Cool early punk influences not totally my thing but I liked it enough

this album was jst alr, it feels longer than it was and patti’s voice got a bit annoying on the back end of the album, maybe i didn’t like this as much as i would have if i didn’t want to listen to other albums when i listened to this, but overall i didn’t leave with much

Liked most of this it’s just a shame the bits I didn’t like i really didn’t like. (Namely- bird land)!

Gloria and Land are the standouts but others fall flat

First song of the best, I get the spoken word appeal but didn’t quite do it for me

"Horses" by Patti Smith is a groundbreaking album that blends poetry and rock and roll. It's raw, energetic, and super influential will probably listen to it again I enjoyed it but I just need to give it a few more listens and I think it will eventually grow on me.

Lyrically very strong, musically kinda boring. I think I'd have to re-listen to this. For a debut album, not an easy feat.

Didn’t really find much to appreciate here. Indie rock with vocals that were trying too hard and not enough at the same time.

не зашло особо...

I liked this fine but it did not speak to me. My favorite poet/singer is Miss Polly Jean and always will be.

Conflicted. The mother of punk rock and cultural influencer before everyone pretended to do that. I don’t like it though…it’s prototypical and not for everyone.

Okej album men mycket som är rätt tråkigt? 70-talsviben är där, men låtarna är för repetitiva och hennes sätt att sjunga är ibland de sämre delarna av Janis Joplin. Några låtar/texter var bra dock och mycket känsla overall!

Reading that this was meant to be 'poetry punk' makes a lot more sense, as the music did seem to just be background for extended raving lyrics for large chunks of this. Quite liked a lot of the music in there but punk music is rarely improved by sticking around longer than it needs to so I think you'd have to half the runtime to make some of these songs land properly. Okay for one listen but the poetry side of things didn't appeal to me. 2.5.

Classic

This is one of the classic albums I've liked less the more I've listened to it over the years. The first time I listened to it several years ago, the transgressive lyrics and energetic crescendos clearly demarcated it as an important rock classic. It is clearly ahead of its time and is very novel for 1975, since it generates its emotive power from Patti Smith's charisma and songwriting skill as opposed to any kind of technical experimentation, virtuosity or progressiveness that typifies that era in my view. The issue is that its also one of the more inconsistent classic albums. Gloria, Land and especially Free Money are really amazing songs but the other songs are too monotonous and plain, to the extent that they become kind of aggravating. I personally think that lyrics are the least important part of music and good lyrics can only amplify a great song. But no matter how much of a "poet" Patti Smith might be, it doesn't matter if the majority of the songs are too limited to make her poetry shine through. I think it's telling that one of the oft quoted lyrics from the album is literally the first line, because whatever else of genius she says is buried behind a wave of identical droning chords that they are missed by the casual listener. It's very reasonable for someone to adore this album if the magic sauce of Horses' acclaimed songs applies to the rest of the album in their view. Equally I can clearly see how some people see this as trash - most of the album is quite annoying if you are not in the right headspace for it. I think it's fair that this album is critically and culturally preserved and I lean towards it being on the positive side. But it is still very unrefined and probably salvaged somewhat thanks to John Cale's production. Given it was Patti Smith's first album, released when she was only 29, those flaws are completely acceptable, and clearly, ameliorate the album for many people.

Is soothing punk a thing?

birdland sold me a bit

It's nice. I've always had such a hard time connecting to it though. I like the energy of the band, and Patti's vocals are always very theatrical. The album just sits weird in my head though, like so what just happened actually? Stars: Birdland and Kimberly

Gehört in die sammlung

I was expecting 70's singer songwriter. This is not that. It was interesting. It felt a bit like Björk in the delivery. Not the pixie dreamgirl, but how the music takes turns you didn't expect.

A good album. Very raw. Very Patti Smith. But not her best work.

On one hand I get it, on the other, I don't.

Not really my thing but she is obviously VERY talented

Iconic voice, messing with pacing enough to make us uncomfortable. I enjoy how it seems to thumb its nose at the rock band trope. It sounds like (at the time) it should be like a Mick Jagger at the front…

I love her voice, I can sense the power and dedication she puts into her songs Fav song - Kimberly 3/5

Weird in a good way. Something about Birdland reminds me of St. Vincent, also loving the shreds on that one. Kinda punk I like it, never heard of Patti Smith before. I love love love the intro to Elgie. Favorite Track (this listen): Elgie - Wishing the song was longer; beautiful vocals and spoken word, and the guitar is singing too :P

Pretty interesting and different compared to other punk albums I've had to listen to. Usually they sound the same, but this one was like electric Leonard Cohen. Is it great? No, but anything named 'Horses' deserves some respect.

reminds me of kate bush, very whimsical

good...trippy

I like some songs but its okay

I was surprised how her voice seems like other singer after her. I see some of Blondie and Siouxsie in here. Dramatic and poetic songs, some of them longer than the usual punk songs, but this make more interesting. Just two songs got me more actually.

This was my first Patti Smith album I have listened to. Might even be the first songs I knowingly listened to. I listened twice and a lot of it didn't resonate. Maybe if I get to know her, Patti Smith, this album will feel different. It's like high school and right now, Patti is one of the girls I didn't know or found annoying because of how cool she was. Then I see her a number of years after high school and realize we have more in common than we realized just on the surface in high school. Maybe it's like that? I dunno. I am sure I will go back and revisit this at some point.

This was pretty good. Sounds like a raw, angry, rock and roll version of Joni Mitchell. This is an example of bad background music, but when you stop to listen, it really rocks. This is active listening music.

I expected more from this. Didn’t gel with her voice either tbh

Several great songs, although some of them are similar to each other. Magnetic voice, makes her a singer eady to recognize. Some of her songs I would listen to it again.

A bit shouty. Still enjoyed it. Like a punk Joni Mitchell.

Loved the production and the boldness of the lyrics. Lots to love in here in general and lots to get your teeth into. However, there wasn't any song that screamed "listen to me" again but I'm kinda glad I got to listen to it at all.

Yeah it was ok. Heard a lot of things I liked.

Not my music, but dayum there's a lot of power buildup here. Some nice solos though. Will rate better later.

Mixed bag. Liked some tracks, not sure about others

Gloria kicked ass

Easily one of the best album openers we've gotten so far, at least if you're asking me. Any cover of Gloria feels like a guaranteed banger, but Patti Smith's might be my favorite. Land is a transcendent trip that I'm always happy to take. Indulgent, however, is a perfect way to describe some of the other songs on the album. It can feel like a little much at times. Big ups to Lenny Kaye and his guitar work on Horses. 3.75/5 Favorite Tracks: Gloria, Redondo Beach, Break it Up, Land

Patti Smith alternates high & low with some high highs and low lows. Part of it is that you really need to indulge yourself in the scene, right, like her whole mileiu. And that stuff can be really annoying when it runs too long or feels too indulgent. That's definitely the case on Birdland. But Land? That's the best song here! The shorter stuff is roundly good, taking its cues from the VU with some dashes from the 70s singer-songwriter school. Favorite Tracks: Gloria, Redondo Beach, Kimberly, Land

A few of these kind of sounded Sleater-Kinney-ish, which I wasn’t expecting.

Not so bad but not so good

Although it is highly rated, I still don't hear any compelling vocals here. Influential and talented lady. But not something I would want to listen often.

And a half. Very good

A bit much for a Sunday night when you’re slightly hanging but still powerful

I recognize the historical significance, but don't quite fit in with the adulation. I am afraid I thought Horses pretentious or maybe just not all that much. It's okay. Maybe I'm just reacting to the deification.

I've tried with this one before. Today I was able to appreciate how much she's influenced a generation of musicians, so there's that. But it's never done anything for me. I guess I like the idea of Pattie Smith more than the reality. Cool cover, though.

I can't get into her and I've tried

Patti was great! that Smith guy though, ugh

respect the vibes but this ain’t for me

she sounds like a goat

It's very reminiscent of Neil Young to me. It's fine, and I appreciate it was groundbreaking at its time. But it doesn't grab me like other music does.

This album was an impressive Venn diagram of things I don’t like

Alright album, I didn’t like the opening track but the rest was pretty good

She does an absolutely brilliant cover of The Who's My Generation (on the Legacy Edition CD, it was originally a B side on the 7" of Gloria) that had me replaying the second it ended-loved it! The album proper is pretty good but not sure how likely I'm to ever hear it again nothing wrong with it, but I found it a little boring. Some say it's the first punk album, but it doesn't sound punk to me when I think of punk I think of Ramones, Sex Pistols, UK Subs, Black Flag, etc. this to me sounds like singer/song writer stuff just a bit angrier. I get why it's such a highly regarded album, but I prefer listening to Cradle of Filth's cover of Allison Hell off a fairly recent COF album that is a complete return to form & is up there with all the early albums- if you ever liked COF check out stuff like Cryptoriana to this year's The Screaming of Valkyries- what a late career (mid career? Isn't Dani like 50?) delight! John Cale (of The Velvet Underground) produced Horses I guess he & Patti Smith butted heads a lot and a member of her group almost got in a fist fight with. Also, one man from Blue Oyster Cult (Lanier) and one man from Television (Verlaine) appear on the album.

I don’t get it, probably never will. There’s good elements of this, though. Opening line of “Jesus died for somebody’s sins, but not mine” raised my expectations a lot. She just keeps chewing on her words so the delivery is annoying. Best songs were Redondo Beach, Kimberly, and Gloria. Calm 5-6/10

This feels like a good album to clean the house to. Like, just turn up the volume and mindlessly work around the house with this on. Also kinda feels like movie montage music for such a scene. Generally, I like it. Not really adding it to my regular listening list. But I can see why people would.

The first few tracks were bops but I didn’t really jive with the rest. It’s really clear where Geese is getting their sound frlm

I respect Patti Smith. She's got great lyrics. I liked a recent podcast interview I listened to where she was the guest (with Ezra Klein), but I'm just not really into this punk/folk stuff. It's alright, but a lot of these songs just don't hit for me. I need my punk to be a bit less folk and my folk to be a bit less punk.

Enjoyable but didn't love. Very clear paving of the way for other acts. Will try again

its alright i guess

I don't even get how this is considered punk rock, let alone one of the greatest albums of all time. Like, it's not bad at all but whenever I listen to this I'm like "So, that's it, huh?"

the good songs are very good and the bad ones hurt lol. overall i like it

Utrolig alternativt opplegg fra 70 tallet, helt ok, trenger ikke å høre igjen.

It was good. I prefer her more pop and rock songs, but this was a fine morning album.

Just ok

I just wasn't in the mood for this. On another day maybe I would have appreciated it's heart and commitment - but today it just wasn't melodious enough for me.

This was pretty good. Never heard any of these songs before. I'm only familiar with Patti Smith from the singles that got lots of airplay over time.

Good album, enjoyed it but did not love it. A few good songs but not anything I felt a strong connection to or emotional reaction to.

I get it but not really my vibe

Great opener, a bit downhill from there, but enjoyed overall!

Reminds me of Yoko Ono ( not a compliment). Perhaps that was the sound for the time and it got pressed on vinyl. I do admire Simone who followed a dream to make music.

patti smith walked so SOPHIE could run.

Quite good, rather cool, very influential, but not something I’ll voluntarily revisit in the future.

I've really struggled to rate this because it was fine. I thought Patti Smith would be a bit grittier.

Respect it, don't really love it. 3.4/5

I feel like I should care about this album, but I just can't. Fair play to the lass, but it just doesn't tickle any of my bones

This is one of those albums that you're SUPPOSED to love, but I don't. It's just not enjoyable to listen to. I appreciate Patti Smith and her lyrics and voice and that she was groundbreaking in the punk scene, so I feel like I must give it a 3, but all I really want to hear from her is Because the Night and Dancing Barefoot. 3⭐️

I kinda hated this like singing word vomit
