3.7 Listened 4x.
David Bowie's excellent production and an energetic yet restrained Iggy Pop made this one an excellent listen. Not sure how often I would put it on in the future but I do know where the standout tracks on it came from. Closer to 3.8 for me
Nice punky good album.
Gute alter Rock
I like Iggy! He’s a Punk pioneer, and a certified bad little bitch. Some of his stuff I love, and his latest album is solid. Never was a big fan of this album, but I get the appeal. God love and keep Iggy Pop!
Banger after banger but boy was it confusing when Bowie stopped, and Iggy started.
I did not use a private Spotify session. I knew several of the songs, of course, but hadn't listened this album. Probably because I thought I had heard "Lust for Life" enough for one lifetime, but that isn't even the best song on the album. I heard a lot of Pixies/Frank Black on this album, wasn't aware of that before.

Solid album. Definitely had that 60/70s Rolling Stones rock feel to it.
Fun rock album
Mitreissend
Super solid punk adjacent rock. I think this aged very well. The songa are memorable and it all feels consistent and fresh.
Lust for Life es top, el resto bastante bastante bien. Un 4 muy alto cerca de un 5.
It was good.
While not every song on this album is a hit, it features a handful of tracks that are classics. It has a raw, stripped-down rock feel that adds great texture to the music. Produced by David Bowie during his Berlin Trilogy years, this album benefits from Bowie’s creative streak.
I enjoyed this one, the riffs drive the songs forward and it's got the two big hits on it, Passenger and Lust for Life.
Classic opening drum beat (see also Are You Gonna Be My Girl and You Can't Hurry Love), followed by solid songs throughout. Impressive that this was written, recorded, and mixed in only eight days. Favorite tracks: Lust for Life (upbeat song about drug use), Sixteen (rocking song about paedophilia), Tonight (nice song about drug overdose), Success (wait, this song isn't about drugs or paedophilia? Loved hearing Bowie's "Oh, shit!" at the end), Fall in Love With Me (good groove, no obvious drug references, but refers to the subject of the song as looking "young" a few too many times for comfort).
Great music with a lot of swing and interesting melodies.
This album solidified for me how important this project has been for shifting my perspective. Before doing this, I probably would listen to the #1 hit and decide it's not for me. Starting off, I wrote it off. At "Turn Blue" (track 7 of 9), I was converted. I've played the whole album a second time through, and I love it! It's so weird and edgy, and I love that an album from half a century ago still feels so fresh. I get major Bowie vibes. Turn Blue is such an awesome track, with so much going on, and it reminds me of Bohemian Rhapsody. Mostly I'm just trying to understand my turnaround, but I'm glad I gave it a chance.
It's a goodun but honestly it's a bit too much rock for me. Also, Success is just such a hard skip...
Fantastic, like Iggy covering aBowie album!
Love it
El bowie punk?
You can hear Bowie's influence all over this, but not as much as The Idiot. Personally I think that's a good thing, although that's probably an unpopular opinion.
I enjoyed this - I only knew the 2 big hits but Success is another highlight. This record is VERY Bowie - I consider this kind of a negative, because I'm distracted by how much of another artist's imprint there is. But it's cool nonetheless
All too frequently with these albums we see someone producing an amazing album before succumbing to the rock n roll lifestyle. Iggy Pop did it the other way round, battling a heroin addiction with the help of his pal David Bowie who not only helped him get clean and collaborated on a couple of albums but paid for some expensive dental work, hence the goofy smile on the cover! The highlight is the thrilling title track, forever linked with Trainspotting.
Godfather of the punk movement
Not as good as his more punk offerings, but some great tracks here
Goo album! Wish I could give it 3 1/2 Stars. Maybe 4.
Some great tracks. Some kinda self-indulgent tracks. Singles are better than the album.
actually surprised that i liked it THAT much
It was a nice listen and I just generally enjoyed it. Maybe it’s more of a 3.5 but I’m feeling generous. I dunno I liked it. I wasn’t going crazy or anything, but yeah good.
never liked this one as much as his stooges stuff but still in that vibe, and has a good few stone cold classic songs. i like the idiot more, but i do really enjoy the grungy aesthetic of this one.
Not my usual style but I recognised the hits and quite enjoyed the whole album
Let’s be clear: “Lust for Life” and “The Passenger” are very good songs, but it’s worth asking questions about the record. The intro to title cut takes too long and then the song goes on too long, too. Iggy sings – by which I mean sneers and growls when appropriate and doesn’t go all warbly too much of the time – much more effectively than on The Idiot where his stabs at mildness and slower tempos largely fell flat. “Tonight” and “Success” are good songs, but for me exit velocity is never achieved. Production is tinny and hollow. The sound is too ragged and too much like a Bowie record where he outsourced the vocals. And the recovered addict going on about his recovery makes neither good conversation or particularly memorable records.
7/5/24. This is my first true introduction into Iggy Pop's world. I also had no idea he collaborated with David Bowie on this, and the result is outstanding. All the songs are well done, energetic, and easy to digest. Will add this to the rotation!
Recognized some classics
Iggy Pop working with David Bowie. I mean, it couldn’t get any cooler than that.
Lust for Life!
Gran disco. Me encanta como canta Turn blue y Fall in love with me.
Pareltje. 8/10 Highlights Lust for Life Some Weird Sin Turn blue
Was not expecting to enjoy that as much as I did.
Fantastic solo album from the godfather of punk music
Definitely Iggy
Best Iggy next to the Stopges.
Good album! Turn Blue was a bit too long for me, The Passenger and Success stood out to me best. Catchy, varied, and didn't outstay its welcome. Plus David Bowie was involved!
Not earth-shattering, but enjoyable, and Iggy's vocals are interesting and unconventional. Musically, Bowie's influence is clear, and I don't think 'that sounds like Bowie' has ever been used as a criticism.
Ironically square cover photo always makes me smile. Superb opener, all time classic. Hoped there were more sleeper gems on this but while the singles are the high points, the rest of it holds up … ok.
Pretty stellar 4.5
As a 90s kid, my first introduction to Iggy Pop was not as a musician, but as Nona F. Mecklenberg's dad on The Adventures of Pete and Pete. So, the song "Sixteen" is just extra creepy for me. He was 30 when he wrote that song. Even if it is kind of tongue in cheek, barf. Otherwise, this is a pretty good album. It's a mix of proto punk and glam rock. Bowie's fingerprints are very obviously all over these songs. Their voices sound good together, but some of the more experimental and jammy moments can occasionally be a little much. Of course, "Lust for Life" and "The Passenger" are classic songs, though I prefer the Siouxsie and the Banshees' cover of the latter. "Turn Blue" is a terrible, cringe-inducing song. If that and "Sixteen" were left off, it would be a much better album. 4/5
4 stars
Don't think I've really listened to much Iggy Pop before. This is actually pretty good.
Favoritas de pana, A tier: Passenger, Lust for Life y Sixteen S TIER: Fall In Love With Me
Extremely good. Feels ahead of its time (and I guess it was, since the title track really blew up in the 90s).
Oh man, I never thought I'd say this, but thank God for Iggy Pop. I was in a long stretch of questionable albums participating in this project and I really came close to quitting. Then came Lust For Life. I'm not a fan of Iggy Pop. I like some of his stuff, especially Stooges. But this album is special all on it's own. After what I've been hearing lately if give this is a 5, but I'll be honest with a 4.
Never listens to Iggy Pop before but damn this was good. Tons of bangers and a whole lot of talent. Each song was unique and interesting and stayed that way all the way through. Favorites were the passenger and sixteen.
I don't like everything here, but what I do like I like a lot. Solid B or 4 stars.
Bello, dai.
Most people don't know that Iggy Pop and David Bowie used to collaborate and David Bowie produced this album and composed Lust for Life. I think because the two went their separate ways for so long people and history kind of forgot these two music giants worked together at one time. That fact only makes this album even better. Lust for Life has unfortunately been overplayed at this point, though. Pop must have sold out because this song makes me think of a car commercial. It's still a great song if you can separate it from that cultural identity. Same with The Passenger, which would make an even better car commercial song and probably did. Again, still great, simple lyrics and all.
I’ve overlooked iggy for awhile. Solid album but not groundbreaking for me. Lofi 70’s Brit rock
Only heard the title track and The Passenger previously. The whole album is good, will definitely revisit.
*in IGN journalist voice* Lust For Life by Iggy Pop makes you feel like Jim Jarmusch
I liked this album overall, this is my first time listening to Iggy Pop and i can see why people like him so much. there’s some amazing song work on here, he really knows how to envelope you in his sonic landscape. lots of amazing blues rock and experimentation on here wish he wasn’t such a creep though. 4/5
Ganske bra.
This record has some gems on it but it’s not as good as The Idiot.
The second of a brace of albums recorded with David Bowie, and a real classic. The whole album is great with a slightly rougher feel than its predecessor (The Idiot), standout tracks are the title track, and of course The Passenger. This album set Iggy Pop's career back on track after his post-Stooges hiatus.
Lust For Life is really good for a lot of the record, obviously a massive Bowie influence but I kinda prefer it to most of what I've heard of Bowie. The two massive songs are obviously great but there's quality throughout, Neighborhood Threat is intense and heartfelt, Sixteen is swaggering and youthful, Fall In Love With Me sounds like about 100 songs from the 2000s trying to imitate it, and on a record of just 9 songs it really annoys me that Turn Blue is SO fucking bad as it's really noticeable. A good 4 for me.
This was really good - a couple of classics in there but the whole album is pretty solid. Good energy pretty much throughout, a couple of changes of pace, obviously a bit of Bowie in there but there's also that punk edge. A middling to low 4.
This nigga sound like The Strokes.
First listen wasn't overly impressive more of a 3.5
Bowie + Iggy 4 eva
What a fun album, if that can be said about an album with themes of addiction, anxiety and alienation! But a collaboration with Bowie is probably what makes this album seem so timeless. The production is magnificent. It allows you to listen at volume and hear all of Pop’s feelings from whimsy to pain to clear headed observation. What a ride.
This album was the one that made me fall in love with Iggy and give Bowie a second chance. Full of bangers.
I was surprised how much I liked this and how much I recognized from it. I honestly am beginning to think David Bowie is at his best in a supporting role. The emotional delivery from Iggy here is so much more than I can really picture coming from Bowie, but you can definitely hear his influence.
I loved this! I'm not terribly surprised, but there are a lot of one hit albums on this list, and I only knew the titular track before pressing play. That is to say that I didn't realize I already knew "The Passenger", and I'm not sure I knew that was Iggy Pop when I had heard it previously. I was surprised by the variety in style contained in such a short record by a dude I mostly know from the Stooges and being Michelle Trachtenberg's dad on Pete & Pete.
OG rocker
This is a pretty good album. Iggy/Stooges are always kind of hit or miss to me, but David Bowie's ... Bowie-ness is really present throughout this album, and I dig Bowie. (I understand Bowie was even more omnipresent on the previous Pop album, "The Idiot", which I haven't listened to yet.)
A classic album that influenced a generation. Easy to listen and memorable.
Good ol' punk rock. A couple of classics, along with some stuff I found interesting.
I need to give it another listen, but overall was nice.
The Passenger: Lovely song, absolutely love the simple beat, and the backing vocals add another layer to the song Overall a nice album, definately worth a relisten (and probably the discography as well)
This is the second studio album by Iggy Pop, who is sometimes referred to as the "Godfather of punk." An early punk rock album, "Lust for Life" is characterized with driving rhythms and catchy hooks. This album was heavily influenced by David Bowie who is probably a large proponent for this album's success. The title track and "The Passenger" are absolute hits.
Really liked it. It's a fundamental album for late-70's punk. We can hear Bowie's influence in here, as we can also notice in his own "Tonight" album (1984). Really nostalgic and efficient.
There is really a David Bowie album, no doubt. As a fan of the earlier, harder , in your face Iggy, there was a much different listening experience. I do have a couple different songs off his album downloaded, but I do prefer the earlier days with the Stooges. He looks great on the album cover too. Seems like the more I realize the impact of Bowie on some many artists, the more I appreciate his contributions to the music world. There were times, it almost felt like Iggy was trying to sound like Bowie. Anyway, back to this album. I did enjoy and there wasn't much to not to like. Lust For Life and The Passenger ate songs you still hear on the radio to this day, but a few others stood out for me, including Sixteen, Fall In Love With Me and Turn Blue. Actually, something about Turn Blue, I really like and may be my favorite song on the album. I can't really explain why. I just dig it. A good Bowie/Iggy album. Letting the genre play out has been fun as well. 4
fun album, some bangers, will go back to it and really interested in iggy pops sound
Enjoyed this one. Was familiar with the title track, but amidst everything else was completely new. It was a lot groovier than I would have expected and I liked that. 4/5 Will listen again
It was pretty good, Iggy Pop is definitely a great artist, would listen to it again
Another pleasant surprise. Never thought I’d listen to an Iggy Pop album let alone enjoy it! Knew the 2 iconic singles before and that was it. But really loved this album. Can definitely hear the Bowie influence. And plenty of cowbell which is never a bad thing!
Iggy is great and I adore the Stooges. This album is his best solo effort with 2 of his best known tracks. You can hear the Bowie influence running through this work like a stick of Blackpool rock. That in itself not a bad thing, but it isn't the Stooges and it was never supposed to be. What this is, is the sound of a man who wanted to clear away the proto-punk excesses and create something new. It works. A 4 star.
I love this one - definitely one of the better albums I’ve gotten in a while. No skips.
solid, energetic bag of tunes falling in the rock/pop realm. A couple of great tracks, the title track being one. I don’t think I have much to say about this one, just an enjoyable record overall.
Very good, never really listened to Iggy outside of the "hits", but very enjoyable would listen again.
Super bekannte Hits. Immer noch gut.
Best Song: Lust for Life Worst Song: Turn Blue
Solid rocking songs with a great fun attitude. Knew the big hits from the 90s Trainspotting revival and enjoyed the rest of the album too.
Super cool. I love Tonight.
The Passenger stands out on the album with its own style Turn Blue - blues? So good
Godfather of punk. This is apparently a collaboration with David Bowie. I hear it; maybe because I want to? Regardless, it’s a great album with many “borrowed” licks or straight up ripped off progressions (Right, Jet???) Egregious!
Good album. Would listen again.
Very hip and cool rock record. Some classics on here I didn’t know were from Iggy. One of those really solid albums I’m happy to have found through this project.
Not bad.
Lust for life!
This album is like a mix of bluesy punkish tracks and those albums of dudes muttering barfy lyrics in fake British accents overtop of doot-doot type "riffs" but is pretty enjoyable with satisfying songwriting to back it up. Shame that David Bowie worked on it though he already has like 30 albums does he really need to leech off of other guys too?? And what is this bloke on about in Turn Blue?????
Pretty good!
Very fun, not quite as (pre-)punk as the stooges, but very varied with loads of guitar. Two obviously well-known classic songs, but the rest are all pretty good too. I did not expect a ballad!
More Iggy - thanks! Passenger is a classic
The Passenger is in that elite bracket of songs that’ll single-handedly boost my rating by a star or two, turning an otherwise poor album into an average one, or a good album into a great one. As it happens I think you can remove it and still be left with a more than decent record - probably the best of the 5 Iggy-featuring albums the list has thrown up so far. There are a few other great tracks on here plus some throwaway but still enjoyable ones. So if we add The Passenger back in and crunch the numbers I think the whole package is worth… 4.5 stars!
OMG IGGY POP😭💕💕💕 I've already listened to this back in 2022, but I think this time around I enjoyed it more. Never realized how catchy the songs are. Overall a great album‼️
What a great collaboration.
Iggy Pop is the man.
Starts strong and does enough after that. The biggest failing is the album art.
Loved this album. Highlights were Lust for life Tonight Passenger Neighbourhood threat. Bowie’s buddy
I really enjoyed this album! I was already a big fan of Lust for Life (and it reminds me of Trainspotting - amazing film - and book!) and Passenger, and it was great to be introduced to the rest of the tracks! I'll be back to listen to this one again
A fantastic collaboration of Bowie & Pop. Well worth a listen
Wow this record is amazing!! First time I listen to it completely and it definitely surprised me. Will listen again for sure!
Great album, really enjoyed this one. I heard of the album but never listened to it, only some of the songs. I’ll remember this one. Favourite songs: - Lust for life - The passenger - Success
Bardzo krótki album. I was not expecting that
Great and sloppy
Liked this a lot more than I expected. I didn’t know a lot about Iggy Pop, had mostly just seen those pics of him looking homeless. But I thought this album was great, a couple of very recognizable tunes and overall kept my attention for the entire record. Would definitely come back to this
Really dig this album. Was considering going as high as a 5 banger based on the first few tracks, but second half wasn’t as strong. Interesting to learn about Bowie’s involvement with this record and its predecessor. Seems pretty obvious after listening. His fingerprints are all over the album. Amazing that Bowie toured with Iggy as his keyboardist and was dead set against stealing the spotlight. Look forward to digging into his catalog a bit more along with The Stooges. 4.25/5
Awesome album I’d never heard before. Opening track really hooks you. Has a timeless feel to it.
Some great songs on this. Passenger is really good as is Lust for Life, Some Weird Sin and Fall In Love with Me. Quality stuff.
Great album. A couple of true bangers on there
Has quite a few hits and memorable songwriting.
I dig it
If you've never listened to the lyrics of "Turn Blue", I recommend it. I think I might be missing something culturally / generationally: "How come the blacks, how come they They copy you so good? They get off on you, so sexually If you wanna make it Young man, you gotta make somebody come Come out of your black, come out of your black Black and strong and black"
An excellent album! I knew Lust for Life (how could you not after its hijacking in so many commercials and soundtracks) but every song on the album is an equal punk/pop (but not pop punk) gem. So many catch but still edgy songs. Definitely going into my regular rotation.
I’d listen again.
I used to hate the song the passenger but now I’m different. Good album!
Lust for Life 4 Sixteen 3.8 Some Weird Sin 3.9 The Passenger 4.2 Tonight 3.9 Success 4 Turn Blue 3.9 Neighborhood Threat 4.1 Fall in Love with Me 4 Score: 3.97
The idiot is more experimental, but Lust for Life is more emblematic of Iggy's persona. The hits are legendary, Bowie's sharp even if he sometimes overshadows Iggy, and the songs are both intelligent and immediate. Next to Fun House as his best record, with or without the stooges.
Great stuff
Just a really good Iggy Pop album. Lust for life and success are great tracks.
Love the music but the singing does get repetitive
Great album. Knew a couple of songs, exposed to a couple ones I’ll listen to again. Really like Fall in Love with Me. And the intro to Lust for Life is fantastic. Each instrument has a unique flourish.
Solid album. I had heard about half of it before. Enjoyed listening to it end to end. Not something I regularly listen to though.
This was good old fashioned rock n’ roll fun with a couple of bangers! Festing another overhyped hipster classic, I was positively surprised.
dosta hitova
This is fucking great and so much fun.
Pretty good and classic. Kinda sounded like a loud Beatles. Had some classics I was familiar with like "The Passenger". Album art is a weird mix of sweet and creepy.
I thought this was going to be rubbish! But I was not aware of the golden touch of David running across this record. His influence is so strong, and combined with Pop's rough and rowdy ways, you have a winning formula. There's times (Turning Blue!) when it sounds like very bad David, and you get the sense that he might have been holding something back for the Berlin Trilogy, but when it works, like on Success, it's an absolute diamond. Great stuff.
Favourite song - Lust for life
Last fall I skipped an Iggy Pop concert because “I’m not really into him”. I’m starting to realize I was wrong. I loved Raw Power and despite not thinking much of the title track my whole life, I love Lust For Life. A great combination of the raw Iggy, yet more accessible. The Passenger, Neighborhood Threat, Some Weird Sin. Success. There is a lot to like here. 8.8/10
didn't realize these songs were iggy pop
This is one creepy-ass album cover. Great record, lots of fun noisy punk/jangle.
That's a great album. A couple very recognizable ones in the mix with other very good songs. It's hard to miss when you have peak David Bowie writing for you.
Pretty cool album. Took a few songs to get into, but then it was downright groovy.
good but not as good as people want to think
Good good good
Iggy Pop: looking like your lesbian aunt since 1977
This is the type of album this list is good for. An album that I should have listened to a long time ago that is really good. Solid album with some great songs
Funny to think of this as Punk... it isn't as angry and aggressive as I think of. I dare even say that I like his vocals and don't even question hierarchy, consumerism, or my existential existence after listening. Favorite tracks are Neighborhood Threat and Fall in Love with Me. I can easily imagine a modern cross-over country band covering them.
7 / 10 Buen sonido punk-rock.
Enjoyed the sound and its uniqueness, a sort of punk-y, Velvet Underground-sounding, full of witty lines type of record
Somewhere between The Beatles and punk rock gets you this classic by Iggy Pop. Energetic and catchy without a skip on it.
This album is the chronicle of excessive appetites of youth, desiring to experience everything, visit every place, and taste every person. The sun is shining, so smile like Iggy.
Favourite tracks: lust for life; the passenger; neighbourhood threat; fall in love with me; success
Listened to this a few times - really good album and a clear influence on a lot of the post-punk/garage type band and albums of the 90s and 00s. I am sure this one is going to head into my rotation now.
The song, "Lust For Life", lives rent-free in my head. It's a timeless piece of rock and roll. To me, it sounds as fresh today as it would have in 1977. Just an astoundingly good song.
The Strokes dos 60... maneirinho
Another album, that without Bowie, we wouldn’t have.
If VH-1 had been around in the late ‘70s, IP would surely have starred in the first “Behind the Music.” The record is very good, gloriously ragged, and certainly better than The Idiot. And IP is all-in – there’s no doubting the commitment. There a handful of excellent songs – "Tonight" and "Success" the lesser known one. But I can’t escape the feeling it has a bit more cred than it deserves. LIkely that’s down to the “recovery” backstory, which doesn’t actually add anything musically.
Favorite Tracks: Lust For Life The Passenger Success
Do I like Iggy for once? Usually I just am not a fan of Iggy Pop, his later work just doesn't do it for me and his work with The Stooges is also just not my thing. But this album does actually do it for me! It is a great album in a way I wasn't expecting.
Dig it
Iggy my man what an album
Pretty good. Never listened to an album by him before
Lust For Life is such an iconic track. And Bowie on backing vocals throughout? Great!
Classic rock
A side is just hit after hit after hit. B side is slightly weaker and trails off so can't give it a perfect score, but an iconic album nonetheless. His voice is great on this record and love the raw, almost live feel to it.
It's alright
The Passenger is timeless, and all the rest of the songs that sound a bit like it are great. The remaining few I didn't like that much. Stand-out: Neighborhood Threat
Enjoyed all I was able to listen to and will be adding it to my playlist.
When it’s good, it’s excellent. But a few songs should’ve been left on the studio floor.
it aight -7/10
No real duds, I found the last three songs a bit boring but still not bad. I enjoyed the expressive vocals
I liked it, I felt like the shouty bits were pretty well balanced with melodic stuff. Bro is very down bad in the last song. 7/10
7.5/10 - I quite enjoyed most of the songs. None of them were bad but none of them were amazing.
this one was pretty good. I didn't really like lust for life but everything else was decent enough. 7/10
It was okay
Ye
Maravilloso
Öfter hören, gutes Zeug. Passenger!!
There have been a lot of fours lately because all of the albums have been good. Iggy did a good job here. I liked the album. It also doesn’t change my life but it’s just really solid.
Can’t listen to this and not think of Trainspotting. One of my favorite movies with such an iconic soundtrack. And those guys loved their Iggy Pop, didn’t they. For me it's probably a 3.5ish... up to 4… I like some of the songs (Lust for Life and The Passenger ) a lot, mostly from nostalgia. The Bowie involvement is cool. Actually, Turn Blue is pretty good when I sit down and listen. Fall In Love With Me is good too, Doors kinda song.

This is horny in a way I don't understand...
I forget how bluesy Iggy Pop was since he was such a punk icon. Lust for Life is probably one of my favorite songs, but this whole album holds up. Some of these songs sound like they could have been recorded by Tom Petty or Bruce Springsteen even. Anyway - good stuff from start to finish.
What a classic!
Another solid Iggy Pop entry. I preferred the previous (The Idiot?) but this is still full of what made The Idiot great, and more smooth round the edges. It’s definitely poppier and less edgy, but not entirely to its detriment. Just shows a level of versatility I didn’t realise he had. Ive been a casual Iggy / Stooges fan for years but stuck to the same few records. The entries on this list are proving to me that he’s up there with the likes of Bowie in terms of being a genius. Some Weird Sin brought back nostalgic feelings of embarrassment after the band I was in as a teenager tried to cover it. I managed to forget the song ever existed. 4.5
Enjoyed this, the hits are great and there were a few more tracks not too far off the level. Quality fell off toward the end but it was fun and the songs were generally as long as they needed to be. Think I still generally preferred the stooges, the punk sound was a bit subdued here, but I think as an album this was better than his band stuff.
Thought the first half of the album was absolutely banging - Lust for Life and The Passenger of course, but Some Weird Sin and Tonight were great. I think it falls apart a bit from just over half way though, ends up being a bit grating. The influence of Bowie is somewhat evident but Iggy certainly carved his own path.
This album is miles better than "The Idiot" that we had previously. I can barely believe that these two albums were made in the same year. The first four tracks are so good it makes the later half seem less than. Overall really enjoyed. Highlights: Lust for Life Sixteen The Passenger
Didn't enjoy the previous solo Iggy album ("the idiot") we have had very much..... This was much better though. Think it came out around the same time but felt more like an Iggy album and not a Bowie album. Could still sense Bowie's influence at times though. The passenger and lust for life are both great tracks. 3.5 but it's Christmas so 4
Mi ricorda Trainspotting
I know Iggy Pop wanted David Bowit to have less of a grip on this album, but I feel if anything this just feels like if David Bowie had continued his glam-ish hard rock rather than experimenting with different musical mediums in the late 70s. That leads to a record that has got some great emotion and gripping parts of it, as well as that Stooges edge that can be enthralling if done right. It does lose me a little on some of the lyrical choices (especially on songs like Sixteen) and a good chunk of songs losing me when they were oh so close to bringing me in, but this is still a rocking tune that feels like the perfect blend between that proto-punk sound and that more intense grip music had going into the 80s, and I think it pulls it off really well.
4 - Difficult one for me. I love Iggy at his best but some tracks just bring the album down. I think he’s so himself that I can’t not like it though.
Never been a huge fan of Lust for Life, I think it's a fine track but it just doesn't do much for me. Some Weird Sin's intro is fun. The Passenger guitar riff has a lot of gravitas. This is a much better hit than Lust for Life for me - the vocal is much more effective. Tonight is pretty good too tbh. Don't mind Success either. Turn Blue is a bit slow and annoying. I feel like Iggy feels the need to try something different with his voice but it doesnt really work. Liked this album a fair bit more than expected. Fave Tracks: Some Weird Sin, The Passenger, Tonight, Fall in Love with Me 3.8/5
Can't get past how much he looks like Jason Gunn on the album cover
first time listening to the full album, it's great
Wahrhaftig coole Songs. Order: 1) The Passenger 2) Neighborhood Threat 4.3
4 iggy is geil
Sehr cooles Album! "Lust For Life" macht richtig Stimmung und motiviert. "The Passenger" ist natürlich auch ein Klassiker! 8.5/10
Great album, some strange subject matter though
Fantastic piece of work. Thank God for David Bowie's involvement making this album. This wasn't my first time listening to it. Even though I'm praising the album I'm still not giving it a 5/5. There are a few songs that are ok compared to awesome songs like The Passenger.
A solid rock album, a bit bowie in places but it seems everyone was then and they were friends so he was just copying his mate a little and have him write the best bit of homework, that's what friends do.
Really like this album. Gained a better appreciation for Iggy. Looking forward to hearing more from him. Have three songs added and could see listening to the album in full in the future. A very solid 4-4.5/5.
Groovy
Soundtracking the iconic opening scene to Trainspotting, the intro and title track evokes powerful memories of my teenage years. It's such a good romp it takes something away from second track, Sixteen, before picking up again with Some Weird Sin and then into standout track The Passenger, its upbeat swagger, instantly recognisable riff, "La la la" chorus making it utterly timeless. The thing that struck me most with this album is there's a lot more to Iggy Pop than what appears on the surface, which I guess is what happens when you have spent a significant amount of time as David Bowie's protege. The Bowie-esque "Tonight" and "True Blue" with their soaring harmonies, shining guitars and varying vocal styles showcase a well-rounded musical offering beyond the bare-chested punk posturing. It's up there with Lou Reed/Velvet Underground and Bowie himself (if not quite hitting the stratospheric heights of the latter, which is an unfair comparison in itself). At 41 mins and with 9 tracks it's not an opus, but with the aforementioned Lust for Life and The Passenger, two almost culture-defining tracks, on the same album - it's hard not to love this album for this fact alone.
I would like to believe anything David Bowie touched turned to gold. This is closer to silver. Iggy kind of was the king of garage rock in the 70’s though. For an album released so late into the 70’s, it definitely feels like it’s taking from that raw power of the late 60’s and early 70’s more than anything. And you can definitely hear the Bowie on the album. Not only does he play on it, but his production style is all over this. Really, Bowie paved the way for rock artists like this. He did it with Lou Reed too. I am continually blown away at how much influence that man really had. Iggy’s voice took me a second to get used to. He has always been an interesting personality, and that bleeds through into this record. It’s dirty, energetic, and full of life. Listen to Turn Blue. The way that song ramps up and then suddenly comes to a conclusion is super cool. Objectively the most interesting song on the album. Rating: 7/10
continuing to have a real cool time. music: appreciated. (⌐■ ̮ ■)
I’ve listened to the Stooges so much but never much Iggy Pop beyond the singles and a few other songs here and there. Big mistake?? I liked this better than most of the Stooges stuff I know!
3.5-4: Similar vibe to the Ramones album but with a bit more to it, some duds later on can't spoil it. Enjoyed more than i expected
My experiences of Iggy have been quite hit or miss. The Idiot seems to be regarded as one of his best albums, yet I didn’t really like it at all. However, there are two songs on today’s album that I already know I enjoy so I’m somewhat more hopeful with this one. Let’s listen! Songs I already knew: Lust For Life, The Passenger Favourites: Lust For Life, The Passenger I will say that I enjoyed this album as a whole, but there are certainly two tracks that stand high above the rest in terms of quality. There were no bad songs here, but the rest of the album doesn’t really make itself memorable. This was certainly much easier to enjoy than The Idiot to my ears, which I’m most definitely glad about. The music is very raw, and would definitely fit under the umbrella of garage rock. I miss the days of music not being overproduced. The rawness of this was very welcome.
All good except for maybe a slow song near the end - a Berlin Bowie album in all but name and pretty upbeat (even Tonight - about a dying girl - is relatively upbeat). There are more conventional song structures here than on some of Bowie’s equivalent LPs of the period and no long Eno textured sound-scapes.
Listened Before? No Album Art: 3 / 5 (This is some prime 13or30 content right here.) Alright so here we go again with Iggy Pop (this time sans Stooges). Opens on the beach-rock inspired title track that I know him best for. This song is pretty sweet even though the mixing is utter garbage. Sounds like vocals were recorded in isolation in some concrete hallway with Iggy at one end and the mic at the other; the instrumentals all lay flat beneath. I think re-mixing with the bass punched up would do this song a huge service; bassist is putting on a clinic, but you can barely hear him. The Passenger is a really cool song. Sounds like The Strokes or one of those early-2000 UK-Indie bands 40 years earlier. Once again, I wish they pushed up the guitar mixing just a bit. Tonight actually feels heavily Bowie influenced. Like the guitar work through the bridge. Neighborhood Threat is another standout track, with Fall In Love With Me tapping into that pre-Strokes sound (I think its mainly the vocal effect). In any case, this is a fine one. Definitely preferred it over the Stooges album several weeks back. Pop is clearly front and center in this one; not only in name, but also in the way that each track is mixed. I would say that generally, the songs are quite good, but I think that the mixing doesn't do the instrumental enough credit. Overall though, this is a solid one. High 3, leaning 4 here. I'll give it the nudge, because I could see myself enjoying more than one listen. Added to Library? No Songs Added to Playlists: - Lust For Life (Sunny-vibes) - The Passenger (Driving)
Unfairly went into this album thinking I wasn't going to like it because I thought it was going to be punky like him with the Stooges. But it's turned out to be a nice groovy album that I really liked . Great album to run to while listening. Adding Tonight to my playlist that song was mad funky
The Passenger // Tonight // Turn Blue // Fall In Love With Me //
Vital, energetic production supports unique view on life. Classic. Timeless.
It’s 77 and Iggy has already transcended punk. It’s got the attitude and energy but feels well composed and deftly performed. I’m not really a fan of “punk” but this feels like something more.
I honestly had only the vaguest idea of who Iggy Pop is and I had never heard any of the songs on this album. But I'm a fan! I found myself bouncing my foot along to the beat, always a good sign. On the whole, catchy and peppy in just the way I like. Standouts were Lust for Life and The Passenger and it seems that I am not unique in thinking so.
The music is iconic. Iggys voice is grating at points. Some songs have aged badly - like sweet sixteen. But there’s a couple of pretty perfect songs on it. I’ll be humming lust for life and Passenger all day.
Recognised a couple of songs, and listened twice so a strong 4
Fire out of the gate! Songs I “knew” but didn’t really know.
Lust For Life was quite the ride for me in terms of quality. The first 3 songs were great and really groovy but the album fell off at the fourth song and stayed that way until the eighth song which was when it got a bit better. It was quite the mixed bag but the first 3 songs were so good, it gets a 3.5 from me (adjusted to 4 for this website) Best Song: Lust For Life Worst Song: Turn Blue
Love some Iggy!
Easy to listen to and has some really catchy songs, first half of the album, is definitely better than the second half. 3.5-4
Powerful and energetic, takes a hold of you and doesn't let go.
Enjoyed. Trainspotting probably has part to do with it
A collection of really good songs. Really like the production style. A couple of songs go on for way too long
Ah, so we have the David Bowie album we need to file under P do we? Notwithstanding two stellar singles - the title track and passenger - this record just oozes Bowie. But, interesting in my view, the thin white duke was already on a different level. Whilst he was helping Pop with this he was working on Low, a far more adventurous work. 7 years later Marillion would create Misplaced Childhood in this same studio, Hansa, overlooking the wall and East Germany. You can feel the starkness of this place in the production. The singles would be enough to give the album 4 stars alone. The rest of the tracks can’t get it to a 5/5 because of the overriding Bowie feel. But there are places where Pop even sounds a little Jagger. Enjoyable album but the history of the time is slightly more interesting than the music overall.
7/10. Kinda cool, nothing mind-blowing
Pretty solid album. Could definitely see how The Passenger was influential on a lot of the alternative and garage rock stuff that came out in the 80s and 90s. 7/10
Prefer Stooges Pop to Bowie Pop, but this is still good.
Energetic but sounds a lot like Bowie. Seems like there’s a general ‘70s pop sound’ that a lot of the non rock albums emulated back then. Still a fun album though. Lust for Life is a classic
Bonkers amounts of energy, and performances I would die to see live. Creepy lyrics tho
I'm glad I've never seen, felt or touched 1970s. It was a confusing and slimy place. Most of the songs end in a fade-out, since humanity had too much to handle back then to take time to finish songs. Production-wise everything is surprisingly very nice. I expected way more "punk" but got a decent "rhythm and blues". From reading about but not really listening much Iggy Pop except mandatory Lust for Life and I Wanna Be Your Dog I expected way less "sadder Rolling Stones". Lyrics are very repetitive, but that's the whole deal. Feels trance-ish. A great album still, but a bit too much of the same thing to my taste. Read up on it - I knew David Bowie was involved!
Fine
Cool! These are some catchy songs with nice production. Even though the songs feel better as individual songs sometimes, and some weird moments, this one is pretty cool! I’d see myself coming back to some songs here.
Yes
I didn’t realise how good this album was. I’m only really aware of Iggy for his hits and his popular culture personality. This was really good. A solid rock album from beginning to end.
Lust For Life is the GOAT!!!! Seriously fucking love this song. The Passenger is so good too, didn't take notes of other standouts but this is some top tier glam rock and I'm a big fan.
Groovy glam jams. Very relistenable, I think I slept on Iggy before but I am coming around to Mr. Pop.
I dig Iggy!
Iggy sort of returns to his former glory. It’s easy to understand why this is the record people gravitate to.
Completely different from his debut, Lust For Life is Iggy Pop developing into his own legendary persona and stepping out of Bowie's shadow (even though this is very much still a collaborative effort). It's aggressive without ever losing sight of musicality - reminding me that the name Iggy Pop is almost as false advertisement as the name The Killers.
Iggy dives deeper back into his Stooges roots while still keeping up with the incredible partnership with David Bowie. It’s what I missed on The Idiot.
Brilliant for its time
Rollicking good time.
Very strong start, but kind of tails off in the second half. Loved Lust for Life and The Passenger.
I enjoyed it quite a bit
Very good
classic
Good tracks.
decent, but didn't engage me.
Great to hear the rest of the album where Lust for Life is from
Groovy and accessible garage rock. It's a lot brighter and full-of-energy than his earlier release that year The Idiot. Bowie's influence is stronger on here than ever, with songs like "Tonight" screaming Bowie's glam work. No bad songs, there's a good diversity of sounds here. But overall, I like the rawness that the instruments sound like they're being recorded from underwater. Has that deep dark groove you see in later goth music yet feels full of life.
Really enjoyed this overall. Some timeless classics and others I enjoyed that I hadn't heard before like neighbourhood threat for example. Really enjoyed the whole thing and will listen again
Lust For Life and The Passenger are classics. I enjoyed this a lot on the whole.
Personally I prefer the idiot but man this is such an insane classic. how often does an older artist come back and male two back to back bangers.
Lust for Life is a great up beat rock track to kickstart the Titular Album. Starting off the album with a very high tempo track to hook the listener. Sixteen is a very broody track that really captivated me. Something about it just makes you really want to groove and snap your fingers like you're a goth in south park. The Passenger really steals the show, just everything you want from a track. Very joyous acoustics on this and a catchy chorus make this a very clear standout. Tonight is a switch of tone to a very somber track detailing the last moments of a woman's life due to heroin overdose. Overall this is a very good album that I can see why is so highly touted. A very great rock record that would inspire many of the best later down the line.
Pop!
Really solid album. Lust for Life remains a banger. Success is an underrated great song. David Bowie's fingerprints are all over this First time listening to the entire album and yeah, it cooks!
Really fun! I like the energy. I feel like this is something that music has exceeded, though. Like there's music released recently that has the same vibes and style but is better. That's influence, though, so good for Iggy
Nice 4*
Iggy ja Ziggy!
Born of the cool. Every sound is very punk and "old" but I really enjoyed it.
Standouts: Lust for Life, The Passenger, Tonight. And I think Turn Blue is a damn good one too!
Great album with Bowles influence evident throughout
Love the Bowie influence on this
This album has an interesting style. There’s a strong 60’s R&B/soul influence but filtered through glam-rock and punk. David Bowie produced the album and co-wrote a lot of the music and you can hear his dramatic style. Iggy Pop can be very theatrical with his vocals too and the production puts his voice front and center. The standout tracks are the classic “Lust for Life,” and “The Passenger.” Great rock songs.
"Lust For Life" the song is so dang good, I really just hate how it became so synonymous with TV ad's. I feel like there were a few companies that used it and used it the same commercial for years and I really can't hear the song without thinking about a TV commercial which is a bummer. "The Passenger" is another killer track. I love the laid back coolness. The melody sits on top of that cool swung guitar rhythm (almost a little like reggae/dub right?) and his voice tone and performance fits so well. What a great album cover. It kind of looks like a TIME magazine cover but in a goofy tongue-in-cheek way. I haven't listened much to Iggy Pop but this record sounded great.
An exploration about what makes life meaningful after being at your lowest point
3.5/5
It's a really good, though not excellent, rock album. Bowie's presence is noticeable, but not as dominants as on The Idiot. Some really solid tracks, but there are a couple of fairly dull ones.
4.5
This is the first album I’ve listened to that was good, not great. It has some iconic songs on it and I know Iggy Pop was very influential to the punk rock scene that came after him. It definitely takes you to the dark alleys and hole in the wall bars in your mind’s eye. It’s a fun album.
Really good album, mix of genres and stands up well
Had some songs I knew about on here. Overall, it was a good album.
Now that’s more like it. Timeless
This was good. More up-tempo than The Idiot.
I only knew the title song before listening. Really enjoyable. I like the pop-punk genre and Iggy was good at it. Didn't hurt to have David Bowie helping out. Turn Blue is a really interesting song. Apparently the lyrics were composed on the spot by Iggy for a tune Bowie had written. That's crazy.
