Reviews (page 5 of 7)

Very west coast, not your usual Buckley, not bad..

This was pretty good! I've heard 4 Tim Buckley albums before (really enjoyed 3 of them) but hadn't got to this one, and it was verrrry different to what I was used to Wikipedia described this as the first move to Buckley's 'sex funk era' and... yeah that sums it up really A lot of it is really fun and there are some great grooves, but some of the songs outstay their welcome. It was also quite unlucky for this to come up in the project so shortly after Let's Get It On, which basically does the same thing in a more effective way

Sounds like Tim likes to do it all with his big ole mamas! And everyone else! I especially enjoyed Hong Kong bar.

Sve u svemu okej!

Not bad

The best of this album IMO: - Devil Eyes It was okay. 2.8/5

Normal.

Not bad

Gaanz schlechte 3.

First, this album is offensive and toxic. Second, a huge part of the 1001 albums are the US bluesy bands and performers which starts to bore me.

odd mix of jam and blues

Prefer his son but not a bad listen.

Pabbi Jeff Buckley. Vel áhlustanlegt folk rock með blúsívafi.

An enjoyable listen, a much more interesting album than I expected. would revisit

Groovy.

Ended up as decent background sound.

I nice little album of bluesy-country-rocky songs.

Musically the first couple of tracks were fantastic, but there are some uncomfortable lyrics in here. The latter half of the album was a lot less interesting to listen to, but was fine background music. The strings in 'Make It Right' caught my attention again but not enough to give this more than 3 stars.

Kuulosti kuin Rollarit ja Aerosmith oltais vedetty tehosekottimessa smoothieks. Aika kitkerää... 2 liian vähän ja kolme liikaa.

Ihan pätevä levy

Good album. Able to understand its importance and influence, but not quite my style.

Really enjoyed this one. It was over before I knew it though, which means it didn't stand out enough and probably shouldn't get 4 stars

Plätschert so dahin. Hong Kong Bar ganz netter song.

Didn’t really make an impact. But didn’t offend.

Was upbeat and funky so the music was good for the most part. Probably better without the lyrics.

Not a big fan of most of the lyrics and songs, but make it right is GG playlist

Fun 70's sound with a bit more funk than I've heard in albums from a similar time frame. Nothing super compelling here, but a fun listen. 3.0

Nun ja, irgendwie 70ies... in den 60ern klang er aber besser...

It's fine, but it's like Robert Plant without LZ. Vocals are too much for me personally. Maybe I'd like the folk-era Buckley better.

The album is quite funky and neat. Though I don't see anything too special about it. The singer's manner of singing is interesting.

Pretty darn sex funky.

It was better than I thought it was going to be. Sounded kinda like Led Zeppelin mixed with Bluesy Folk? I enjoyed it, but probably won’t ever listen to it again.

Buckley brings a blend of Soul, R&B, Rock, and Folk all into one unique album. This record welcomes you and invites you to experience something new and refreshing. Although it lacks any major ear worms, it is a notable effort that warrants deeper listening.

Sounds interesting.

not keen on the voice - songs are fine

A little bit of jazz, some R&B and a heap of funk. BT: Move With Me, Get on Top, Nighthawkin'

some crazy stuff in here....some good some not so good - had to skip "get on top" as....WTF?

Quite enjoyed the one-two punch of Tim Buckley this app has delivered up. I think I might prefer this one to Starsailor. Okay, nobody is confusing him for George Clinton, but as a blue-eyed soul cut this ain't half bad

Ok, but not made for me

The album is a great jam for instrument aficionados, but average from a songwriting perspective. I’d be more interested in what his folk output was.

Folk, rock suave, blues...

Insane album. Pretty annoying but I also kinda love it. 6/10

enjoyable. but that's as far as i'd go.

It’s ok

Lekker soul albumpje, niks mis mee

Some of the songs were great, but others are a bit underwhelming. I think I enjoyed Sweet Surrender, Hong Kong Bar, and Make It Right the most. If the rest of them would be as good as those, it would be a 4 but, 3.5 down to 3 for me.

Nice, chill old rock.

Kul æra og stil, men låten er litt både og synes jeg. 3/5

Gets a bit weird at times, but enjoyable. Hit to miss ratio is not the best. Best track: Make It Right

I'm not sure which is more repetitive, the overlong, rip-off funk tracks or the pathetically creepy sexual lyrics, but I must admit a soft spot for Buckley's tuneful and curiously androgynous voice.

The music is fun, but I cannot get into his voice

It's fine, but a bit much after a while even if you try to not pay too much attention to the lyrics (which is extremely good advice in any case). Sweeet sweeet surrendaaahhh uhhhhh ahhh mamaaaa toooooooo.... And so on. Definitely think Isaac Hayes was parodying not just himself but this album (and others like it) as Chef in South Park. Chocolate salty Balls is a better track than any of those here, though.

Greetings from LA I like Tim Buckley, but I don’t think I like this record much. It's good to try something different, but right from the start the knock off barroom honky tonk really didn’t land with me, especially in combination with the lyrics. He’s not a sexy man, and to hear him contort his voice into letting you know that he likes having sex is particularly not sexy, and the whole effect is rather off putting. There are occasions where his folkiness and jazziness poke through though, the intro, strings and overall 70s California vibes to Sweet Surrender are great, and the bluesy guitar and hammond intro to Devil Eyes is possibly the one time the funkiness doesn’t feel forced or ill fitting. Hong Kong Bar is possibly the stand out, the folk-blues acoustic nature of it is great, standing out against the rest of the album. Aside from those three songs I don’t think this has much going for it, and Move With Me, Get on Top and Make it Right are actually quite irritating, and I can’t think I’d listen again, so a 2. 🌅🌅 Playlist submission: Hong Kong Bar

Je savais pas que le père de jeff buckley était musicien aussi Bonne découverte, voix sympa. Rien de transcendant non plus mais un bon moment passé à écouter. Pas de son qui sort du lot. On dirait vraiment un ado en chaleur

Musically the most up my alley compared to the other Tim Buckley albums I've heard, but his vocal performance on here is so annoying. Why does it sound like someone is squeezing his throat? The lyrics are also a bit... weird.

Was this bad music? No. Was it uncomfortable to listen to and made me feel bad? Yes. Will I listen to this again? Hel no.

Wow, the resolute jauntiness here really belies Jeff Buckley's estranged origin story six years prior

Very difficult to listen to.

not bad but not for me

Nothing really remarkable that hasn't been done better by other artists? Why is this an album I need to listen to?

I guess this is supposed to be avant garde or something? I found it inchoate and just pretty boring.

Another album by “that guy” as dad so aptly described. A fairly uninteresting 70s album

That was just bad.

It would actually be pretty good without Tim Buckley. If you have a streaming service that can mute the vocals it’s worth it

I’m angry at this. There is no way in hell that Tim Buckley deserves three albums in this list.

alright

desastre

Álbum normal, se deja escuchar. Identidad propia, eso sí.

idk not my vibe

Not for me

I was out when the rubbing monkey started.

I feel far more distant towards this record than the more patient, introspective Happy Sad (the only other Tim Buckley album I’ve heard). He is going for a jubilant, carefree mix of blues and funk which I don’t think he is naturally suited to and I had trouble surrendering to.

“…Greetings from L.A. did not sell well, although this is probably his best seller…” Gee whiz Wikipedia, I can’t imagine why this dreck didn’t sell.

I really like the album artwork and the name of the album but I cannot give stars to album artwork alone. I wanted more from this and it was disappointing and lacking any vibe. Tim Buckley had a vision but couldn't deliver the LA vibes I was promised

No thanks.

Horny (derogatory)

Apparently Tim referred to this era of his music as “Sex Funk”. Who’s more insistent on their ability to funk, this guy or Parliament? Still laughing at the review, Frank. Spot on. Anyway, Doors did this whole thing better.

Tim Buckley proves that you can be a horny freak but as long as you have a weird enough voice, people won’t think of you like that

Within 10 seconds I realised that there was a whole side of Tim Buckley I was not previously aware of. Quite mixed feelings about this, which was clearly made to be a bit obnoxious. Felt a bit crap and weirdly sleazy, but maybe there's more to it that would be revealed by further listened. For now, it's a low mark.

It was ok in spots. It is a pretty patchy sort of album

I just got this guy a couple days ago why is he back?

move w me - what kinda noise did he make at the start</3 groovy tho "i dont care if u tell me ur married" pardon? get on top - groovy, wtf kinda noises he makin tho sweet surrender - i dont rly agree w his morals.. hes got a nice voice tho ill give him that. kinda sounds like shakira tho (not a bad thing) devil eyes - genuinely what is his problem dude GENUINELY js hootin n hollerin bro make it right - holy hell this guys kinky (i say as if im not)

As I listened to the album, I kept thinking that someone should help this guy. He's clearly struggling.

Have to assume Nighthawkin' isn't referring to when people use metal detectors to steal artifacts from archeological sights. Not really a fan- don't think I needed to hear him sing about licking toes. Favourite song: Nighthawkin' Least: Devil Eyes

I've liked some of Tim Buckley's earlier, more folk-forward material. This albums is very different, and on the whole very odd, and not very good. There are some fun white boy funk moments - "Sweet Surrender" is the arguable album highlight - but for the most part the songs are forgettable funky jams with odd lyrics. Don't hate it, but its pretty forgettable and feels a bit mailed in.

4/10 I strongly disliked large amounts of this. A lot of it feels aimless, weaving melodies with no destination. There are some periods of acceptable somgsmithery that are interesting enough, but there are equal amounts of infuriating warbling that make me want to scream SHUT UP. It also appears that Tim is lucky I'm not a lyrics guy as I was oblivious to the crap he was spewing out until I read the other reviews and I revisited them. Jeez....

The sound was funky and inventive, but the vocals weren't always my favorite. Also, minus one for chauvinistic lyrics ...

Not my thing

Not a fan

Huh, so this is the (not very good) father of Jeff Buckley That album cover looks pretty depressing

Music had energy and fun at times but not much lasting power. Nothing stood out.

I don't care for Tim Buckley.

could be good, the music is sonically funky and bluesy but it's more just background music that's more annoying that it's such a long song, and then you realize it's all about sex and then you're annoyed you're giving it so much of a chance

Lowkey feverish.

The endless stream of albums where 80 percent of the songs are about fucking is getting tiring. It's not a bad album. I'm just getting a bit sick of it.

Interesting change of style but a weird record that I didn’t really enjoy.

I think the best thing Tim did was beget Jeff. Both died too young. Jeff has the greater impact currently and after listening to this I can't see that changing.

How are there 3 Tim Buckley albums and I've rated all of them a 2? Must be a sign that they shouldn't be on this list. Is he related to Jeff Buckley or something? I like Jeff Buckley but this Tim guy can take a hike!

"Now you wanna know the reason why I cheated on you? Well, I had to be hunter again." He then goes on to call her old--or, more precisely, claim he's too young to do her right. Which I guess is a convenient excuse for a 25 year old alcoholic. My favorite parts were the ones where he wasn't singing.

Missed it

Bergochdalbana i kvalitet här. Bästa låten var Make It Right

I don't think I was as mad at this album as other reviewers have been, but maybe because I wasn't paying close enough attention all the way through. The music has been perfectly fine, and yes, I'd tend to agree that Tim is grating. It's maybe a little sub-par for me, and not something I'm really ever going to want to put on again. But it was ok.

Like listening your sexed up weirdo buddy tell stories for a while. Can’t say I liked it very much. I appreciate the jams but my goodness this dude was a freak.

wow he really fell off

Take a shot every time Tim makes an annoying sound that does nothing to make the music better Starting to become a pattern on this list, where the music’s pretty solid (there are some great sax solos in there), but the vocals are actively detrimental. I am starting dig more psychedelic sounding albums a lot. For “experimental” music it doesn’t sound that bad at all. A lot of the lyrics are just shallow, repetitive, and borderline trashy. The actual sound of the vocals themselves is whatever, but it just gets on your nerves so much after a while. The random sounds he shits out really really suck and made it really hard to not skip to the end This is another one where I really don’t know why this one’s on the list; it’s another one that was really tough to research since there’s so little discussion/legacy on it, and it’s really not that special of an album at all.

If it wasn't for that organ, this album would not make it past 2 stars. As it stands, it's just alright. The riff in Hong Kong Bar really drags (again, no organ there so that explains why it's the worst song) There's nothing here that hasn't been done better elsewhere

figured I'd like, but didn't like something that looks good on the clothes rack, but does't suit you in the mirror

Tim Buckley is a talented singer but sucks as a lyricist. His sexual exploits are not sexy but vaguely ridiculous. Less Marvin Gaye than This Is Spinal Tap. Perhaps he was influenced by “Deep Throat” which was a sensation the same year. I saved “Nighthawkin” to my Generator playlist.

If you do t listen to the lyrics this could be a 3/4 star

Trying to speed run the last few days, this was fine. Felt like a mediocre version of other very good artists.

Please don’t ask me to form a coherent opinion of this album, it was fine if I didn’t listen to the lyrics too closely?

another day, another album

Dude clearly thought he was way cooler than he actually was

Cheesy horns and back up singers. Too shmaltzy.

70’s Folk ⭐️

2.0 stars I can appreciate the pivot into funk and groove on this record, and there are flashes of solid songwriting throughout, but it ultimately didn’t land for me. The musical elements were competent and occasionally interesting, yet the overall persona felt forced. The overt sexuality came across more try-hard than embodied, which made it difficult to connect with the record on any deeper level. Sometimes albums hit differently depending on where you’re at when you hear them...this one just didn’t resonate with me right now. There’s talent here, but the vibe wasn’t for me. Favorite track: Nighthawk

Really why

Dude this sucked. Tim just rambles for about 5 minutes too long on every song and is just super horny. I could not care less about this album or Mr. Buckley.

I get it, the man had sex. I knew it before, he has a son whose music I enjoy way more.

There is an alternative universe out there, where this is a decent album performed by a likeable R&B singer with a sense of lyrical nuance. Sadly, we're stuck in the timeline where Tim Buckley is staining the CV of Chuck Rainey and a bunch of other great musicians. What a shame...

This sounded like washing your face with sandpaper must feel.

Saaie instrumentals, vervelend stemmetje.

Ik vond het helaas niet super interessant. Inoffensive maar niet heel boeiend

Tamelijke saaie listen. Gek stemmetje heeft deze man

Did not care for it.

Kinda sound like an uptempo The Doors, but if Jim's mouth was full of cotton wool balls. And without anyone pretended the lyrics are deep. Which as boring and horny as they are, is kind of refreshing

beetje irritante zangstijl ma wel nog leuke blues enzo

It didnt really mesh with me. But I can kinda hear Jeff Buckley, especially in Sweet Surrender, so thats nice

The Good: This album is civil! The Bad: I was just in LA, and there’s no need to greet me from there… The Ugly: Second TB album… why? Yes, another Buckley album… another time I wish that his son would get a second album on the list, instead of the dad… I do have to say that it starts of decent, but then descends into absolute horror… Will give it 2* due to the first 2 songs… you might want to skip the rest

Im happy i got to listen to an album i probably wouldn’t have heard without this project. There were some highlights and cool moments of genre blending. But ultimately it feels like a forgettable album for me.

trevligt, stack inte ut alls, men gammalt och gosigt.

And hello goodbye Tim Buckley seemed like he was pretending to be a folk singer. In this album, it seems like he is pretending to be a blue singer. Many of the songs just turn into him hollering or jabbering. The Hong Kong song was okay.

This is fine, but not a huge fan of his voice or the songs.

not for me

Tim B is not my thing. It’s not awful. But not sure he needs 3+ albums on the list.

not like jeff buckley

Funky but not funkalicious.

The further I got into this album the less I liked it, not really a ringing endorsement.

I didnt hate this, but i didnt find much if merit. First listen lased by without making much if an impresion, just a generic 70's white man funk/blues mainstream record. Second listen highlighted lyrics and wow, thats not good

Seemed like a talented musician, but I didn't enjoy it.

Not the first white boy to do the blues, and just because you were a deadbeat who died young and birthed a kid who did your thing better, though still not amazingly, doesn’t mean I need to care about you. It’s listenable, but it’s far from good.

Listening session: january 14th, while commuting to internship Listened to before: no Thoughts: some parts sound a bit similar to Tim Curry while singing as Frank-N-Furter which is entertaining but beside that this album was not really my thing Favourite track: Move with Me

Groovy, meh?

Bergochdalbana i kvalitet här. Bästa låten var Make It Right

What is this? Like from a musical perspective - no surprises really. But the lyrics.. what

I would say something pithy, but I’ve been laughing at the other disdainful reviews and I can’t add anything clever. This is not good music and I wonder why Buckley’s worst albums are on this list.

Not really my style and more freaky than I thought it would be

Weird funky honky-tonk, like Tim Buckley wanted to make a soundtrack to a blaxplotation movie. The music is great, I couldn’t help dancing while listening to it, but I don’t think his voice is rich enough for this style and the lyrics are very cringey. I’m happy he’s the sort of person to follow his muse and make music he wants to make. Probably a strong 2 from me.

Sounds like Cher…

5/10 - better than his other album, a bit more upbeat

Musique qui vaut bien 4 mais paroles à 1. On a compris Tim, t'es un chaud lapin.

I wouldn't listen to it again

Even the Wikipedia article doesn’t seem to understand why this album would make the list

Didn't know this singer. An OK album.

Music is interesting. Not a fan of his lyrics.

This isn’t unlistenable but it was annoying. Reminded me of a band that tries to jam live but it just doesn’t land

Not for me. Didn't hate it. This isn't an offensive listen by any means; my ears weren't assailed. It's just... there. None of it resonated with me.

The music itself is entertaining and had the album been only instrumental I would have had more to say about it. This dudes voice is grating though and I could not finish the album because of it. As others have also pointed out, the lyrics sound like they were written by a horned up middle schooler.

Some interesting bits but mostly background music

Just feels like a white guy cosplaying. And Van is a dick.

This sounds like of Geordie Greep was earnlestly offensive as opposed to satirically offensive, which I’m not sure is better or worse. Some of the sounds are good but overall not for me

Not too much of my style

I don't actively dislike this, I just don't reslly like anything about it either. 2.5 stars

Tim Funkley… not nearly as good as regular Tim Buckley. This is all a bit too freaky and I don’t just mean with the rampant horndog lyrics - Buckley sounds like a cross between Barney Gumble and the illest groaniest bonobo and his mutant scatting n a-screeching really does pollute what is otherwise a fairly smooth, plush funk n soul album. The folkier, stripped back Hong Kong Bar is actually one of the better songs here and proof that Tim Folkley wins out but generally these opuses about being a house boy, watching the cobra waltz, doing the monkey rub n squeaking those bed springs all day long I would rather hear anyone else sing - Ian Curtis, Noel Edmonds, Stephen Hawking, Robin Gibb… maybe not Robin Gibb.

Just didn’t find anything very special about this one. I wouldn’t call it a boring listen, but nothing of note here except for maybe parts of Sweet Surrender or the last song.

Drug-addled hippie

i dont really wanna hear about tim buckley getting freaky with it but i guess i did anyway

His seventh album. Pop / Folk / Psychedelic Rock. Sex obsessed drunk asshole rambles for thirty nine minutes.

Eh, not for me

Jim Morrison makes a solo album

This is a much 'busier' album than I'd expected, and it seems to be an amalgam of styles. I didn't think it especially great.

Why is this album on the list? It doesn’t seem particularly groundbreaking, and it doesn’t seem like this was very influential. So like, why is it here? Did the editors feel like there wasn’t enough 70s Blues Rock?

More of a jam album

Tim Buckley is a piece of shit for abandoning his son (I love Jeff Buckley). I get that funk songs are generally a little longer but these felt like the same thing for 5-7 minutes, which isn’t always a bad thing but was in this case. The sound is nice, and I can definitely see the appeal, but at times it seemed inauthentic. It sounds like the background music to a sex scene in the 70s in a movie that didn’t want to spend much on the soundtrack. Talks about sex like someone who has only watched porn and read bad wattpad smut. Overall, I think it is what it was received as: a mediocre album from a mediocre artist, but with one better than average song (in my opinion).

21.11.2025

Less weird noises mid song please

𝘎𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘓.𝘈. has a solid musical foundation — the grooves are strong, the arrangements are confident and the instrumentals carry a certain smoky, late-night energy. However, the experience is heavily shaped by Tim Buckley’s vocal delivery, which can feel strange and distracting rather than expressive. His style dominates to the point where it overshadows the otherwise well-crafted tracks, making it difficult to settle into the music. Even though the album has good elements, the unconventional singing prevents them from fully connecting, resulting in an uneven listen rather than a rewarding one.

Funky. Also not for me.

somewhere between funky and groovy! even as a fan of both funk and groove, it doesn't really feel like my thing. kind of meanders like a jazz album might but it didn't get me in that flow state; i can differentiate songs but they don't really pop out individually much. still, i quite like Get On Top and Make It Right

Rating: 4/10 Out of all the Tim Buckley records to choose….whyyy this one? It may be representative of his personality but not his sound, this album is a huge departure from his usual Avant folk sound where he is weird and inaccessible but much more adept

Just a bunch of bullshit in an album Fav song: Sweet Surrender

Surprisingly bluesy and upbeat, with psychedelic rock vibes. Not what I expected from Tim Buckley knowing his other music. The closest to this would be the Doors, probably. I expected this to be way more mellow, it’s like discovering Tim Buckley’s wild side. Cool organ, but otherwise feels relatively standard to me. Too avant-garde for me.

This is one of the best albums ever?? I feel like I could have made these sounds and recorded them.

Actually not bad. The first song started, I thought 'Oh no here we go', but I still gave it a chance. Certainly a man's man kinda album. It played in my headphones while doing yard work and by the end of the album I thought I don't think I really heard much. I think I switched my mind off. In saying that I didn't once think 'I need to stop this'.

Nothing remarkable.

“Do the Monkey Rub” ….

Swing and a miss. Wrong Buckley. Did we get Jeff Buckley's "Grace" album yet? I'm sure it's gotta be on this list somewhere. If it is not, it should replace "Greetings From L.A.". "Grace" isn't really my cup of tea, but I still believe that it is an album that everyone should listen to at least once. After a while, this album just seemed like it was wasting my time.

Sounds like a bog standard pub bands where the only guy with talent is the bass player. At least we have his son to listen to.

Not terrible.

Mid. Tim is a horny man. 2.8/5

Disappointing after the live from London

Timmy needs a cold shower.

This ain't good

Mid. Like bad mid.

Really did not dig this Best Song: Sweet Surrender Rating: 3.0/10 Stars: 2

I wish I hadn't had time to listen to this today.

Boring

I once heard someone say Jeff Buckley wasn't as good as his dad. I think they got the names round the wrong way.

Not his best. A few flashes of brilliance but not peak.

this dude needs a cold shower

I thought this was also shite. Last song was ok but that’s the only time I didn’t want to dig out my ear drum with a pencil while listening.

I'm really looking forward to listening to this, as I have been a big Jeff Buckley fan for more than 30.years and have never made time to listen to his dad . Well! That was jarring. On the positive side, I think he's got a great voice and I liked the music. However, I just listened to the musical equivalent of someone putting ketchup and mustard on a decent medium rare steak. ⭐⭐

Not a fan

Nemam pojma šta da mislim. Znači da je efekat šoka na nivou? Nek ostane dvica pa sam poprilično sigurna da ću na listi čuti za šta je bio sposoban Buckley Sr. dok ga se nije otarasila cijela fan-baza.

Very average. Its ok musically in parts, but lyrically it's like a teenager who's just discovered sex.

Just not my thing.

shibirila

This dude just did not know how to end a song. Long and drawn out for no particular reason. The lyrics were...interesting. It didn't feel ground breaking though.

I don’t think I really cared about any of these songs. Fundamentally they are fine, I just thought they had no character. Nothing that defined it as intriguing but instead just something safe and easy.

Barely a 2.

Not for me but can see there may be an audience for this album

Entirely forgettable. No idea how this made the list.

Not my thing at all. The vocals were bad, the lyrics were weird, just not my type of album.

Not funny enough to be weird.

Hmm. Fun music, not fun lyrics.

Yah I gave this album a bunch of chances cause I did like the instrumentation but the vocals were such a turnoff for me. I was never blown away with his vocal ability and I didn’t think he ever did anything interesting or difffernet with his voice. Honestly I just thought the whole album was wildly boring. Not bad, just unmemorable.

This album was nothing I expected it to be. I had heard of Tim Buckley, but mainly because of his son, Jeff Buckley. I thought Tim Buckley was a singer/songwriter, and he is, but he evolved from the hippie folk scene to a more avant-garde sound, then to a funk sound before passing away at 28 from a drug overdose. It doesn’t seem like Tim Buckley had enough of a career to land an album on the 1,001 list. Greetings From L.A. was probably his biggest-selling album, but it points out in the Wikipedia article, “Like most of his other albums, Greetings from L.A. did not sell well.” Greetings is a kind of a funk album, kind of a rock album, it’s just kind of weird. I can’t tell if it’s supposed to be a parody album or if Tim Buckley is on the level. As a praody album, it's not bad, but as a legit, 'No, this is the album,' it seems a bit self-indulgent to me. I’m just not sure if I’m supposed to take it seriously. Move With Me is the lead song about a man trying to get a married woman to have an affair with him. Actually, most of the songs are about a man trying to have sex with a woman. Wikipedia did refer to this point of Tim Buckley’s career as the “sex funk” period. The problem with the “sex funk” albums was that the lyrics were a little too out there for pop radio, and what few fans Tim Buckley had made as a folk artist were not into sex funk. But he did gain a cult following, probably swingers and folks from nudist colonies, and those who love visiting nude beaches. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. It’s just not a big enough fan base to get you to sell out Madison Square Garden. I still don’t know what to do about this album. Tim Bucklety seems like he might be an a-hole, as he left Jeff Buckley and his mother about six months after Jeff was born and died before any relationship could have been worked out. Jeff Buckley went on to only outlive his father by two years before drowning in the Mississippi River in a weird swimming mishap of some sort. You can live a nice, long life without ever hearing Tim Buckley’s Greetings From L.A. But, if you're into sex funk or are a little sex funk curious, then feel free to indulge.

I'm actually not sure if I *dislike* anything about this record, but I'm not exactly sure I *like* anything about it either. It just kind of wanders aimlessly for me, with none of Buckley's interesting songwriting skills on display and no instrumental passages that offer much in the way of signifigance or memorability. 2.5/5

Some cool moments but could click with it when listening through.

A bit outdated, some songs were just kind of weird, but I liked the part where he scatted and there were some surprisingly nice beats

A few goodsongs that all have somethjng off putting and a couple of mehs add up to two stars

Nice vibe and flow to the songs but his voice becomes annoying.

#706. I absolutely love the Jeff Buckley album that is in this book, so I was quite interested in hearing the music his father made. After listening to three of his albums now, I think I can say with a fair amount of certainty that I do not like Tim Buckley's music. 2/5: not great.

Just ok

I like freaky shit and I especially like 70s freaky shit, but I couldn't enjoy the raunchiness when it was sung through such a ridiculously affected voice.

I still don't like Tim Buckley. This one was very raw. No imagery, very cathartic.

It’s not a terrible album, but it’s definitely very possible. I don’t ever see my self listen to this one again, but it’s not necessarily offensive or anything. I’m between a two and a one star.

This was really disappointing. I was a big Jeff Buckley fan in the 90s. People always said "His father Tim Buckley was even better! A musical genius who died too young." I always just accepted that as a well-known fact. But I never got around to checking it out. Today I learned that he was just run-of-the-mill early 70s rock. I've heard hundreds of small-town bar bands that make basically the sand music.

Isto passou-me muito ao lado, nooop… não dou 1 porque o instrumental até cativa às vezes.

He likes wailing with his voice. I maybe like it less?

I didn't enjoy this.

Another Tim Buckley, another terrible album. Pretty close to a 1.

Not enjoyable

My initial impression was "wow this is bad". > ... Like most of his other albums, Greetings from L.A. did not sell well ... I was like "I fucnking wonder why?". Terrible lyrics, sex-funk, stupid and profane. But I gave it another go. And in the end I even liked a couple of tracks like "Hong Kong Bar" and "Make It Right". "Devil's eyes" is still too graphical to me but the album redeemed itself a bit. Not bad.

Of all the late 60s early 70s singer songwriters I didn’t expect Tim Buckley to be the first to get a repeat for me. Especially his take on funk? Cause well I don’t really like Tim Buckley, think he’s so overrated by critics, some kind of cult artist, that because of his vocal histrionics are taken as value over any good songwriting he gets smoke blown up his ass, did the singer bit shame about the song, and again he did the kill ya self trip to infamy that seems to be good to get yourself on this here list. The songs we get here lame white man blues funk with dodgy sexualised lyrics and if the songs here are in anyway autobiographical he was a shitty person into the bargain. This is his usual vocal gymnastics and if you like it fine, I just find it starts to grate quickly and gets tiresome like get over yourself, want to give it 1 but it’s not quite that shitty 2 Star

Burde gå på noe rus om man skal høre på dette

Once again, I found Tim Buckley's voice really really hard to listen to for a full LP's worth of somewhat summery tunes. The vibe was ok but the songs were forgettable.

bluesige und funkige momente, aber eine schrille stimme ohne ende. hörbar, aber kein „must-have-listened“.

Fine music. Good for what it is. Not my cup of tea.

Musically the sound of some of it was alright and could have been promising. But it was hard to get past the awful singing that accompanied it.

Very dated, sleazy and dull.

I'm firmly in the Jeff Buckley camp through the first song. This is like dime store Dr. John crossed with the poor man's CCR. Abraxas called, it wants its sound back. It's not bad to sound like Santana, Get on Top feels like a rip off of it though. He sounds like a blend of absolutely everything happening in the 70s: Outlaw Country, Psychedelic Rock, Funk, the Sexual Revolution, Drugs, Civil Rights. Tim Buckley's favorite musician was Jim Morrison, I have no doubt.

It's giving Jim Carey / Steve Carell in Bruce Almighty.

Pretty boring, fairly generic. 70’s were an interesting time for rock music, with a lot of change. This one was a last gasp from a dying breed of 60’s era doe-eyed folk crooners. Pleasant enough, but nothing that stands the test of time.

Not a fan. Clearly a musician's musician. I think all his talent was passed on to his son.

This one was really weird. The production was great, I love that early 70s sound but the vocals and howling were just weird. I won’t come back to this one.

Maybe his weakest album that I’ve heard so far but fine

The only reason why I can give this album a 2 instead of a 1 is because the guitar, bass, and drums are really good and pretty funky on this one. Tim's vocals are annoying at times (most times) and the lyrics just keep getting worse and worse as the album goes on. This guy just seems like a real tool who is trying to convince his middle school friends that he has had sex.

Each song starts off kinda cool then gets progressively more lame.

The only thing that redeems this album is the instrumentals. Every song is about sex and cheating and has some racist remark in it. This album did NOT age well, and should stay in the 70s. Next please. Standout Songs Nighthawkin’ (I guess?)

I prefer more chill Time Buckley :/

Heyo, Tim Buckley. First, I listened to Jeff Buckley and now I guess it's time for me to work my way backwards. It’s neat that this book includes genetic lineages on the list. I wonder how many more I’m going to encounter. A lot of lengthy songs on this album. Can’t say that the length is justified, though for what it is it could be worse. Move with Me is a good opener and is likely my favourite song on the album. The chorus is solid, especially with the backup singers. Tim's vocals are mixed in a strange way, however. I get the impression that they should have been much more pronounced than they are in actuality. The performances themselves leave a lot to be desired, too. They’re generally pretty underwhelming. There are other decent moments on this album. Sweet Surrender has some very good strings and other experimental flourishes. I like the instrumental to Devil Eyes. Make It Right is a solid closer. I enjoy the strings and acoustic guitar. The book doesn’t have much to say about this album outside of its genre-blending approach and the Wikipedia page is surprisingly sparse, too. I'm unsure of how to feel about this inclusion. Tim seems to be a well-regarded artist, though his work appears to be heavily out-shined by the work of his successor. I’m inclined to let this one slide, though I think it occupies the lower end of the “must-listen” spectrum.

I never really took the time to listen to anything by Tim Buckley which surprises me a little considering how much I enjoy his son Jeff's music. Having listened to this I can say they are nothing alike. I found this to be generally uninteresting, lyrically offensive and vocally grating. Often times I got the impression that these were parody songs as they have that sort of over the top feeling to vocals and such. It's not the worst thing I've ever heard but it isn't even remotely enjoyable.

This album is fine, and pretty nice background music, but I didn't find anything iconic about it.

This is funny cuz I was just listening to Grace right before this today before I even knew this was the album of the day! That being said that’s really not the craziest coincidence because I listen to Grace a lot haha. Regarding the album, the music is enticing and well made. The lyrical content however is… well he’s racist, constantly horny, and romanticizes infidelity and getting raped so. There isn’t much to love. I feel bad Jeff had to have the deadbeat this man obviously was as a father. I guess he overdosed when Jeff was only 9 anyway. Checks out.

p272, 1972. 2 stars. Startlingly good voice, let down by average songs and the usual early 70s excessive song length. There's a reason it didn't sell well. Also, the lyrics to "Devil Eyes" suggest he may be covering for performance issues. "She's gonna beat me, whip me, spank me". Typical Saturday night out in Stoke, then.

Didn't get very far

Heard of Time Buckley before, but I don't see how he's any different from other late '70s singers.

Funky but racist

Didn’t do anything for me.

On the surface it’s not bad, but the lyrics are gross and cringy

Not really my style, and nothing here stood out as particularly memorable.

★★¼

This was not great. I liked it more than his other album I listened to the day before. I’m not good at paying attention to lyrics so I missed a lot of the gross horny stuff. This is definitely 1-2 territory but since I liked it better than his other album I’ll give it a 2

Sorry, not a fan.

Nothing stood out to me

Not my kind of music

Nada, no lo voy a puntuar mal, pero no me ha interesado nada. Le puse interés, más bien por ser el padre de Jeff que por mérito propio, aunque al final no me ha interesado. Intentaré oír otros trabajos suyos.

Oh hell yeah. Fun quick listen! None of it really stuck with me but I enjoyed the rock vibe, and the instrumentation was varied and creative. Fav Track: Move with Me

Problematic album created by prickly deadbeat.

Enjoyed it but likely wouldn’t return to it. I liked the use of strings and appreciated that it sounded very 70s. However, considering some of the other albums on the list that I’ve really enjoyed, I would struggle to place it higher than 3 stars. For now, I’ve opted for 2 but I may change it later if it grows on me.

Came out with a banger and then fell on its face….

One of the strongest opening lyrics of any album: "I went down to the meat rack tavern And found myself a big ol' healthy girl" It was all downhill from there. Found myself actually laughing out loud by sweet surrender. Really terrible with the exception of track 1, which was awesome.

Yeh, fine

Better than the last Tim Buckley album on the list, but still feels like someone trying to be Jim Morrison, imitation is fine I guess but Jim Morrison was crap too...

A little more pleasant to listen to than his earlier work, but that comes at the cost of sounding a lot more cliché. I didn't really enjoy his earlier albums, but they had their own distinct sound to them. This album sounds like a knock off of any number of bands combining rock, funk and soul at the time. Looking at the wikipedia-page and other sites, this doesn't seem to be a very influential album of his either. I think it was a boring listen, not one I'd return to.

it's okay. everything is executed properly, but after the emotional and visceral Starsailor (which ISN'T ON THIS LIST???), this feels a bit understated. mildly groovy, lyrics are still up to par, and not a terrible album by any means, but it's not really giving me much. Make It Right is beautifully submissive. deserves to be one of the 1001? over STARSAILOR?? not a chance

another nothing album

“Like most of his other albums, Greetings from L.A. did not sell well” Why is it on this list? Not terrible, but just not my taste. Some of the songs were all right.

i liked everything about this album except the vocals, which made it a bit of a tough listen. Way too over the top.
