Reviews (page 7 of 8)

This album had like 2 enjoyable moments out of the 60 minutes

p460. 1980. 2 stars. Angry, unpleasant noise that goes on for far too long. Bonus point for the quality drumming and bass and the occasional half decent riff.

Kinda samey is the vibe I got

All a bit samey. There's hints of something interesting there, but they're hidden quite well.

It was fine but pretty repetitive

Pretty samey, got the vibe from track 1

Spricht nicht wirklich an.

Not my vibe

This is like a garage band that should have never left the garage.

Fav: Bloodsport Least Fav: Wardance Not a complete joke

Music I can appreciate with that death metal scream that loses my interest.

Pretty plodding and repetitive. I like the punk vibes but there is not much imagination to this.

Meh. There’s a reason nobody likes post punk. It’s just experimental music and somebody singing poorly. Don’t like and this was no exception. Absolutely not remarkable.

what is the fascination with putting sooooo many Brit-punk bands on this list? oh look, here's another. sounds like so many others. blah, blah, blah.

Some good grooves but I found this mostly dull. 2/5

Just load punk noise. At least there is some rhythm.

I just didnt like the style

Punk hate the world music

Okay album, but nothing amazing

Not for me

New sound for me. Kinda metal mixed with 80s dance music? 2/3

Fine album, nothing really stood out

A bit much but ok

Album 582 of 1001 Killing Joke - Killing Joke (1980) Rating : 2.75 / 5 British Post Punk - This is sometimes good but also sometimes pretty bad. Probably worth another listen but just didn't grab me all the way the first time.

Only notable for the interesting synths. Otherwise yet another boring post punk (and as a fan of older and modern punk music I hate that term) album on this list.

Some albums I just need to see the write up of why it makes it into this list...

Why does this remind me of Cut the Crap by the Clash and why is My Sharona suddenly in my head

Favorite Track: Requiem

I'm tired of groups where you can't make out the lyrics! Derivitive of its era, each track depends on the clashing guitar chords with little musical input although 'Complications', 'so36' and 'changes' have possibilities with more production work and song structure. All in all an album I will not bother returning to.

That wasn't funny

Joke is a accurate description

I enjoyed the instrumentals but, really could not stand the vocals. Funny enough after doing some research it seems like they had Dave Grohl on drums, which was a stand out.

Cool industrial sound for 1980; Completely unknown to me and probably would have listened to them in the 90s

Theres good and bad here. First the good: the drummer is amazing, at times it reminded me of SoD which is always nice, theres not a lot of heavy metal on this platform so its always nice to see it pop up. Second the bad: the singer is not great, sounds like he is going to hawk a loogie through the speakers, the british versions where he is not doing flemo is ok but doesn’t really match the tone. His tempo was kind of off throughout the whole album. The other instrumentals other than drums were super mediocre. The songs were too long and I got sick of each one after like a minute. Overall mostly negative with a couple positives. 4/10

Not really for me

Ehhh I’m good on this

Eh this is just okay. Singer looks like Alice Cooper.

Nothing of real value here.

Bit muddy

when you ask AI to make a punk album and it just can't do that real punk edge

I had a bad cold over the weekend and this didn't help things.

Half-interesting sounds that go nowhere interesting.

Didn't hate

Is this supposed to be important? I’ve heard of Killing Joke before, but this doesn’t really make me need to listen to them again. Feels like a suburban form of edgy, even if they are British punks.

I wished I liked this more, but I can't get behind it. Synths just ruin it for me, nor do I care for the vocals. I do like the tempo changes, but I then I run out of things to like. I've had this problem forever.

Not great. Felt like noise. Can hear a little Pink Floyd, maybe Billy Idol, Tool, but the worst parts.

1/8, 13%

Ok rock album.

Spent a lot of the time trying to figure out if this was mega distorted or it was just the vocals on Wardance. Was also surprised it was from 1980 so kudos for that. Musically I thought this was good, but jeez sometimes vocals really let things down.

Some fun riffs and musical effects but this ultimately gets dragged down by the poor vocals. Can definitely see the influence on later punk and metal, my preference is just for something a bit more refined. Listened to: at home. Favorite tracks: The Wait, Change

This album sounds very industrial and even features a goth robot as the vocalist on a few tracks. There's definitely something interesting going on, between the futuristic background sounds and the scratchy production they've managed to blend metal, atmosphere, techno-dub, and garage punk into something that sorta works. I liked a few songs and I do think this was ahead of it's time in the 80's. But I don't really like the band name and some of it feels repetitive. Didn't stand out but decent.

I wanted to like this more than I did. Didn't grab me in any way and didn't do anything nearly as well as some of the other early British punk albums we've heard so far. It felt awful long for a 35 minute run time. For me this is a miss and one I would remove from the list. 1.71 stars

So the Killing Joke is an iconic Alan Moore/Brian Bolland Batman graphic novel that explores the origins of the Joker, how Batman wrought him onto the world, and how a cycle of systematic revenge, physiological torture, and, basically, man's inhumanity to man, is really just an ouroboros and those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it. It's a 3½ to 4 star Batman story and a 2½ to 3 star animation adaptation. This has nothing to do with anything I just said, but I hope you find what I said more enjoyable than this album.

1980 rock, but British and aggressive

Nothing special

More obscure British horseshit. Nothing too exciting about this album. Another post punk/industrial rock record. Favourite songs: Wardance, The Wait, Requiem Least favourite songs: Tomorrow's World, S.O.36, Change 2/5

Not for me

I didn't find this one particularly memorable.

Killing Joke sounds like German music with English vocals. Requiem is a good start but it’s really downhill from there. By Wardance I was out. There are some decent beats but it’s cold industrial for the most part 4.2/10

Seemed fine, wasn’t in the mood for it and lasted 3.5 songs

2.5 It was ok. Nothing really stood out with one go-around. I thought it sounded more like a Clash rip-off than a precursor to industrial music.

It’s ok but does seem pretty influential

I wonder if there will ever be a time in my life that I'm into music like this. Or just any of the dark 80s synthy type goth bands. This was insufferable for me, but I'd understand why fans of a band like, say, The Cure would like them. I feel like this list makes the mistake of taking fringe genres and not only giving you the AAA of them, but also the AA, A, and dare I say B, and C's of the genre. That's how this feels anyways. Not for me.

Tja, punkig ist es schon irgendwie.... Ich mag es nicht. Zu viel Schlagzeug, Kaum Melodien. Interessant

Yeeah... that's not my kind of music. The guitar riffs are nice, but that doesn't make it a good album for me. Very chaotic in moments. In a bad way.

The album was short so it was over quickly. Nothing particularly noteworthy about it. No need to revisit it.

Not my style

Probably technically good but I don't like metal. Hard to judge so I rated based on my preference and not something more objective.

Requiem

I liked some of the guitar work, but just couldn't get into the album. Not the worst but definitely not the best

2024-04-03...

Enjoyed some but not enough

Played on loop at every record store in the 80’s.

something about electronica and punk and the way this sounds tells me it should work buy this feels like a miss.

There was some cool stuff on this album but I still don’t like punk (or post punk in this case). I enjoyed how 80s and electronic it sounded at times. As well as the weird filters on the lead vocals

"Kasumi's review for this album has inspired me to hate on the list author in this review. I can think of 20 albums off the top of my head that deserve a spot on this list but this white man just keeps whipping out the same (often mediocre) genre of old British rock that requires you to read 20 Wikipedia pages to understand. I'm sure they're all significant in some way but to quote my wife, "good music shouldn't have to rely on the listener's prior knowledge to be enjoyable or to convey a message". Nothing against this particular album though it was fine I guess. There were too many songs where they just yell the same word every few seconds (ie. change) and they added remixes to the album so I had to sit through that too. Favourites: requiem, bloodsport. 2/5

apparently this band was super influential and was cited as a major inspiration for nirvana and metallica. i dont really see how tbh because this was kinda mid. i guess in 1980s UK this was the most exciting thing going on. the guitar line was unique and everything was well executed, i just didnt really enjoy sorry guys. also the repeated songs were not good enough to warrant listening to twice. 2/5, i would've enjoyed more if it was more lyrical or melodical or anything, just felt like listening to a tank drive over electric guitars

Better than expected. Not completely enjoyable.

Didn’t care for this one, just not my style

In general I love this genre, but there was something off about this. Too experimental, maybe?

A bit strange.

It has it's moments. I'm getting tired of the excessive UK post punk on this list though. Will I listen to again: 20%

Not terrible. But I hate Punk so not a fan.

unique and interesting. was an experience to listen to the first time, but i will not be repeating. i could not jam with the weird combination of new-wave with heavier elements and goth.

Again, no. Not for me thank you.

A LOT better than I thought.

The main detractors here are wasted space and the awful vocals. The music is not bad, honestly pretty cool at most points, but entirely too many songs just have wasted, empty space with repeated riffs and/or odd background noises. The vocals are abysmal, in my opinion. I feel like there's next to no talent or effort on that front. I'm not big in the industrial/punk scene, so maybe this is neat somewhere, but not for me. Fav track: The Wait

Very mediocre. Side note - What's with the Euro bias on this list? How are there so many underwhelming European artists on this list of albums to listen to before you die?

I know they are very influential, but I was honestly kinda bored? Only song that really caught my interest was S.O.36

Willing poke.

I really like music like this. But this isn't really a very interesting version of this style. Strange choice.

not my usual

I thought I would love this but found it underwhelming.

Heavy, metal I guess. Not for me

Yeah... no.

Some bands’ music sounds more important than it is. Their tight playing and sonic experiments with studio sounds don’t save them.

Not my style

Clearly a product of the early 80s, but it doesn't vibe with me. Neither the songwrighting nor the sound did anything for me. 2/5

OMG, hombres gritando, que original. Esta muy meh.

Boring SORRY

An okay listen, and an interesting mixture of punk, metal and goth. Not so keen on the singing and other than the Wait and Requiem, too many of the other tracks plod along rather aimlessly

I’ve had enough of these muddy 80s mixes man

Found this quite tiring

It's not really my kinda album. None of the songs are bad, but as a whole it just got really old by the end.

Wtf qualified this as music in the 80s

Sound is a bit harsh

Not funny

I'm reviewing this two days after listening to it, and I can't remember anything about it anymore. Oops.

I did not care for the vocals one bit. The ones on "Wardance" were especially jarring and annoying. The music had its moments where I could enjoy it. Overall: meh.

Eipä tarjonnut kummoista kokemusta.

Hetkittäin ihan siistiä meininkiä. Ei kuitenkaan mitään ihmeellistä. Kyl tän kuunteli

really boring

Eh. Didn't love it.

I don't think this band/album broke through in the US. Not quite punk or hard rock, but a combination of both. Reminds me a bit of Nine Inch Nails.

Not for me. I don’t see how this is essential listening. I liked the chiller and more spacious parts the most.

The only thing that album did for me was make me want to listen to Judas Priest...so I did...and it was awesome. I hope that Screaming for Vengeance or British Steel come up on this list

Wardance is scary. I enjoy this more than the "every song sounds the same" punk, but still not my jam really.

nohoyou

Cool heavy rock, not my fav but glad I listened

Didn't like it.

it was ok, some songs had a rush-y vibe which was cool

This was alright

This album- was a joke. And it killed me! No but the singing ruined it completely. The music had some potential however I was too distracted by screaming. Not much else to say. 👎👎👎

Industrial raw roughly-mixed punk sounds like my biggest musical nightmare. ...but man the opener "Requiem" is pretty damn good. It's only after that that things slip off the rails - "Wardance" yeah when your lead singer sounds like gargling thumbtacks would improve things, it's just not gonna go far. The music isn't bad albeit a bit too simplistic to carry the song. And I feel like that applies to virtually the entirety of the rest of the album. I guess to someone who would really hate this genre what's the difference between this and something like Gang of Four? I don't know that these guys could play very well or more importantly write good songs. Based on what I could tell from the wiki article they wanted this recorded as quickly as possible and raw. And... that's where I jump ship. Who gives a fk about whatever the hell "authenticity" means if it's not any good? I can't fully slag on this because it's not all bad - "Bloodsport" I love that synthesizer running through it. But it's ... eh it's just not a good song. That was a great start and then it didn't go anywhere. "Primitive" suffers a similar fate albeit without synth - there's a very cool idea in there but it just drags. This is far from the worst album and there really are elements that work (or come frustratingly close to working) simply because they're cold and angular and even spacious but damn, they should've hired a producer. 4/10 2 stars.

Every song somehow managed to sound exactly the same

Electronic kind of punk

-like 5 songs in, not very into it yet -i didn’t get into it, it just isn’t good -no this album just sucks

There are about 15 songs by XTC that are absolute bangers. Every time one of them comes on I think "I should listen to more XTC." Then, I listen to more XTC and remember why I don't listen to more XTC. This is roughly a yearly occurrence. I struggled through this record, but I really liked 2 songs.

Not my style

Not very interesting. Not bad but also doesn't stand out. My star rating: ⭐- Hated it ⭐⭐- It was ok / meh ⭐⭐⭐- I liked it, good for background music. ⭐⭐⭐⭐-I really liked it, would recommend. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐- Best thing since sliced bread. Other people are wrong with their perfectly logical criticisms. It's part of my personality now.

I can see why this belongs on the list but not for me.

Metal uden rigtig at være det

Not my vibe

Punk never really my thing, even though this band was emerging from the punk scene. They were influential to follow on groups, for example, Dave Grohl, so we have to thank Killing Joke for helping formulate the sound of groups like Foo Fighters

Basic.

This sounds way ahead of its time to me. A nice mix of garage band rock and punk. That being said, it's not really made for me. It was just okay.

i dislike the rough distorted sound plus FX on the vocals

Pretty sure this album gave me a headache. Major thumbs down

Don't remember a lot from yesterday, that's a bad sign

What Ben said

loved the german radio in the background in that one song

Clear line from the clash>killing joke>Jane's addiction, minus the good guitar work of Jane's. First song is fine. The growly synth vocals are not needed. Some of this navigates the space between tolerable and good. Early Nirvana vibes on The Wait. It's OK overall. Probably closer to 3 than 2 but I round down.

Interesting listen. Cool blend of post-punk, metal, electronic, industrial, and even dub. Not something I’m likely to visit again, but I will admit that this album was at least 10 years ahead of its time and definitely deserves its spot on this list.

‘Bloodsport’ was a great song, didn’t particularly like anything else.

No fun man

Not a huge fan

Well, it certainly isn't the sound I was expecting when I started the album. Sadly not really a sound I'm crazy about. It takes a very simple approach for a lot of the songs, but that just means a lot of the songs start out good then don't do anything to stick in my head. I will agree that the bass is very nice, and some of the songs remind me of other songs I do like (early Ministry comes to mind), but this really doesn't do it for me.

Ok album. I liked Complications. Everything else kinda forgettable/samey/repetitive

Not my thing - a bit coarse and heavy

Not crazy about this one. Bloodsport was pretty good, but even that went on a little too long.

Unpleasant to focus on and as background music.

The Wait is a good song, the rest is bad.

some heaviness similar to metal punk too 2.5

Average.

Not that good really.

Not bad but definitely not great. I liked Bloodsport

Listened to this on Friday and thought it wasn't great then, flicking through it now and I don't disagree with past me. Not awful, but not particularly good either. Not my favourite genre, and I don't think a particularly good example of it. 2/5.

"Killing Joke" is an early and raw effort in the industrial rock genre, mixing post punk with a very metallic instrumentation. I understand that this is an historic record for the industrial scene, but doesn't sound particularly good.

Very industrial post punk. Could have been 1990 rather than 1980. Impressive on that basis, but too harsh for me.

* Not for me, but I didn't hate it.

Not for me

It was An album.

I did not enjoy this album until The Wait which is track 5. Aptly named.

Bit too thumpy and repetitive, but fine as background music. Fav new track: Requiem

In the context of 1980 I can see why this was groundbreaking and influenced the whole industrial genre. It's just not my thing

231221 15:49 2.5

Dark crunchy goth grooving. The soundtrack to trying to stay standing up on a dancefloor for longer than you'd like.

A little bit overwhelming for me, but sometimes you're in the mood for something like this.

I really like Killing Joke’s single - Love like blood it’s propulsive and has great guitar and bass hooks. Most of this album doesn’t come close to this benchmark and all of the songs sound pretty much the same to me. The exceptions are Requiem, Wardance and Change but it just isn’t enough for me to seek this out to listen to unfortunately.

Weird. Not really for me.

There's a lot going on here. Not really my thing

Medium

Killing Joke 1980 debut not their later album of the same name which is stupid. Very of its time lyrically, war references despite there not really being a war on middle children of history angst. all about war. Bloodsport is one of the only good tracks and is instrumental, this is not co-incidental. Only other decent track was The Wait which is a cover. S.O.36 this ain't no CBGB primitive is a strong closer but did not save the album and would have been better as an instrumental 2 - not for me but doesn't hurt my ears - experimental for experimentals sake. not a one but could be depending on the day.

A bit of a grower but I'll probably never go back to it.

Por algún motivo me hizo acordar a Sumo. Particularmente Tomorrow's World. 7/10 ludomatics

Not my type of music. Theres better and theres worse, but this falls short of my expectations. Favorite song(s) are Requiem and The Wait. This rating was scaled because its not my type of music, but I understand how other people could listen to it regularly.

Bracing.

Sommige nummers waren echt lekker.

Distant, pissed off, 80s shit. Not the worst but not for me.

Too heavy

Sadly, another entry on this list that is just decent, mostly forgettable rock.

I understand why this could be influential but I just didn't enjoy it that much

Made me feel uneasy

not my thing, but i can see why some might like it.

On first listen this didn’t massively stick out to me. I enjoyed the sound of some of the songs and the new wave elements. I think I was slightly lost by the album being a compilation and therefore would prefer the opportunity to check out albums to get a more cohesive feel of the band’s work.

Noise pollution.

Ei ollut ihan minulle sopivaa musiikkia. En saanut mistään kiinni ja jopa vähän ärsytti.

🤨 nah

Je n’aime pas le punk

this was a real killjoy

Uninspiring

Depressing

Killing Joke, yes, I even own one of their albums, but not this one, a later one. What comes to mind regarding their debut album? Actually, nothing, except that I'll never listen to it again. With some albums, I also wonder if I'd want to discuss them with someone else or even recommend them, and I don't think Killing Joke's debut album is one of them. It's simply boring, but maybe I've misunderstood something. Every time the drums kick in, I feel like I'm listening to the same song—well, the lyrics, but I have to admit, I couldn't care less about them. I'm sorry, but this wouldn't normally get any stars. I find it neither innovative nor interesting in any way. Zero points, no stars.

Despite expecting to enjoy this, nothing really stood out to me. It wasn’t anything special and I didn’t really enjoy it.

I listened to the entire album before realizing I listened to the wrong one because this dumb band released two different self-titled albums. So I'm rating this based on their 11th album, which I suffered through. It's trash. Just purely awful British metal/industrial rock. I quickly skimmed through their 1st album and it's no better. This is the Marmite of music. Nobody likes it, except for the British for some reason. 1/5

Schrott.

Punk range. Annoying noise.

Listening to this was a killer.

This sounds scary :(

*no real music only screaming, and irritating noises

The worst punk album weve had so far.

"Requiem" was passable. The rest didn't do anything for me. Maybe on another day.....

it was bad, liked changes

listened to 2 songs and had enough

This was like KMFDM but without any talent. I hated it. I really, really need to catch a good album soon, because this list is just terrible so far.

No joke, this is utterly fucking terrible.

Started off with annoying vocals and. I'm not even going to finish that thought this album really annoys me, the instrumentals are incredibly promising then theres some throat cancer ridden invalid screaming complete bullshit over it. For disappointing me I cannot forgive...

I am all good with punk and metal but this felt like a mess to me.

mskakakkaakkakaakakkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk

not for me

Another band I couldn’t into. Again, this music is for someone, but not me. I was bored, annoyed, and generally bothered. I zoned out for most of it.

Nope, didn't like this

I didn’t much like the Killing Joke at the time they were new, and the decades since then haven’t changed my view. It’s fairly leaden postpunk music and I really don’t like the vocals layered over the top of it.

Maybe on a second listen

The plodding, chugging guitars at the forefront aren't my bag.

Not my style. It became extremely repetitive and no one song really stood out to me.

Dollar store lemmy kept getting worse

Not for me. I didn’t hate this, but this is not a genre I enjoy.

I don't have any use for this album. Did not expect more from Germans, honestly.

Fucking bad

Did not like. Industrial grind music. Not for me.

Sorry not my thing.

I mean I am only a couple hundred albums into this thing but this album really is one of the 1001 I NEED to listen to? I don't buy it, someone explain.

Just fucking noise. Felt like when you walk into your kids doing music class Awful

I could not find a single thing that I liked about their music

Added 7-29-25

Boring and uninspiring...

I did not find one song to love on this album. 🥲

Not quite

Nope. Unlistenable

I’ve heard of this but never listened before. And it’s a no from me dog.

Horrible

no comment

Not excited from the get-go. I do not enjoy this music. I want to turn it off, but will continue listening for the integrity of this project. 6.5 songs in - is it over yet? Why are there 13 songs?

i dont like men doing punk especially british men

Kinda felt like grating noise. I didn't finish the last couple of songs.

It's just noise

I can........sort of see the appeal, but no song really jumped out at me. Just sort of background rock. If I'm going to get a lot of semi-punk albums that all sound the same, gonna be a slog.

ugfufh

What the goonie googoo was this???

Not a fan, very droney, non engaging

Not for me. I must admit, even though I listened to this only yesterday, I can't remember the album. Very unmemorable.

I made it through 4 songs and called it a day. 1.5 for the effort of making an album

Not for me

This is more boring than I expected....

Not for me

Of all the music I’ve listened to here, this might be the single most devoid of talent album I’ve heard. The vocals suck, the musicanship shows zero evidence of actual ability, and it was overall a completely unpleasant experience. Like listening to a bad high school Battle of the Bands entrant.

Well that was unpleasant

This is just not good, but 1 star or F+ for effort.

Whatever. Boring.

I was working in the Limelight when these guys played. When it was showtime the lead singer turned left instead of right coming out of the dressing room and went full steam into a wall. That was much more entertaining than this album.

No joke, the album name sort of matches with almost a death rock feel (albeit not as harsh) - not a fan of industrial rock!

I actually liked the first song. No to the second No to the third No to the fourth , etc

Is the whole purpose of post-punk to make the most annoying and bad album possible? If so do people unironically like it or are they all just parodies of stuck up pricks? This album had like one guitar riff and an hour of incomprehensible vocals. It's a joke. It's killing me.

Just not my thing, even if Dave Grohl is a fan.

Sorry lads this isn’t my bag.

I don’t think I can finish this one

Couldn't get into it. 1/5

Got two tracks - noth bloody awful - why do I keep getting this crap?

No thank you.

I didn’t really enjoy this.

Cansativo

Not for me

It's different but I really didn't like it
