Reviews (page 6 of 7)
Definitely sounds before it’s time
Some good some not. Music more engaging than lyrics. Particularly like bass guitar. Change might be my favorite.
I could give it another try but I'm not feeling it. I could see myself really liking it if I fist heard it as a teenager
3 1/2, In line with my year-of-Covid angst pretty well. Also nice “prequel” to ‘The Downward Spiral’
Correct, mais un peu trop all over the place je trouve
Interesting, but bit hard
not bad sound wise but hard to get into
Fine, if a bit weird. Not my speed.
Haven’t finished listening.
2.5 stars
This is more of a 3.5 than a 3. Some songs were just listenable, but others were quite nice. Reminds me of middle school and discovering the Cure, the Smiths, and Siouxsie and the Banshees.

"Bloodsport" is kinda catchy. The rest of it doesn't do much for me. It's like The Cure meets the Ramones, and while adding keyboards to punk is part of an interesting mix, it's not something I especially enjoy listening to.
Interesting is the best I can say for this. I can hear the influence it has had in what’s come since, but it sounds like an industrial future where the 60s dr who villains won. Laced with paranoia.
2/3
Fine ?
Bit underwhelming. Nothing even close to as good as Love Like Blood
This was okay just not my usual go to genre. It didn’t really feel punky enough to do it for me.
Not bad...when there were no vocals.
Meh
No private session used for Spotify. I have never listened to a Killing Joke album, mostly knew them from the almost Nirvana riff so I was pretty excited for this album; however I was disappointed. Not impressed with the yelling or the seemingly forced keyboard. I did appreciate the use of a lot of guitar.
Mid, I understand how metal fans would enjoy this album, but for me it seems lacking in substance and isn’t very interesting Overall Score-Strong 4
Very repetitive and ultimately boring. Shame cause it is nicely recorded and has some interesting sounds.
Punk - competent but predictable
I thought this album was really just okay
ehhhh it wasn't bad, but again, just one of those that I didn't really vibe with or get much out of. A lot of that could have been my general lack of love for metal music. I'm sure this was original and important to developing future sounds and whatnot, but not for me!
The beats cool but repetitive.
Repetitive and droning. Favourite Track(s): Change Least Favourite Track(s): The Wait, Bloodsport
Por momentos me gustaba pero la mayoría del tiempo solo me preguntaba cuánto faltaba para que acabara el disco.
Another 2* not worthy of review. This album should be removed from the list and replaced with Mother Love Bone's Apple. Apple was the only album by Mother Love Bone, as its frontman, Andy Wood, died shortly after its release. MLB was set to explode onto the grunge scene, and it clearly would have as Pearl Jam - with MLB's core of Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament - notoriously exploded on the scene soon threafter. Andy was beloved in the emerging Seattle music scene, and his death had broad implications on grunge. Apple is an album that everyone should hear before they die and would be a 4* album if it were included on the list.
Somber, dark and grungy. I like it well enough. A few good grooves in there with Bloodsport and Complications to act as a breath from the more oppressive stuff. I got to Change and REALLY liked that one, but then found out I was listening to the re-issue and Change is a bonus track that wasn't there in 1980. That's too bad, I think that would have been my favorite on this album. With it I'd call this a 3, but without it I think it sits at a high 2.
pretty repetitive honestly. But not that bad.
no my thing
1-2 of the songs on here were decent but did not enjoy the rest, really not a fan of all the shouting x
Good album but not my favorite from Killing Joke
Not my cuppa.
Decidedly inoffensive, which I'm sure wasn't the vibe they were going for at the time.
Won’t revisit
Not my vibe. Maybe deserves another listen to get up to 3 stars.
Ehhhh don’t make me listen to this
I kind of liked the songs that didn’t seem to have any singing. I did not like this man’s singing.
I can 100% see the influences this song had on other artist I like, and I can appreciate that. However, for the most part these songs just dont sound finished. This is also coupled with teh fact that mroe than a few songs have any lyrics and have multiple cuts on the album. You can have simple acoustics/sound, or no vocals, having both just makes it feel empty. Even if we compare them to songs popular that were popular around this time, these sound more like intros and snippets than full fledged songs. If I had to pick a favorite it would probably be Complications.
Punk. More musical than most punk. But ultimately, it gets boring and repetitive. A 2 (it didn’t make me angry).
Not for me
Not sure if this is considered good for the genre but I don’t care for it.
This is not my thing. I can see how maybe when it first came out it had a new sound but now it’s not so fresh.
Overall, a bit meh of an album, nothing really exciting, but it was pretty alright having it in the background, it's just that it wasn't fully enjoyable. It may have been a bit more popular back then, who knows.
great guys. just never really got into the music they make.
I may have enjoyed this when it was released. Not doing much for me now.
This wasn't bad per se- just boring and too long.
Requiem Wardance The Wait Change
Good instrumentals but not a fan of the sound of the vocals. Likes: Wardance, Change
I think I can understand their appeal, it's creative and different, but it isn't really anything I like.
I do truly love post punk, but really did not find much yo enjoy here. The majority of the album is the same lifeless unchanging riffs repeated over and over again. This style can be done very well, but yhe execution here was off. The makings of a great band are here, but overall I'm quite unimpressed
This isn’t good, in my view. But you really can see how you probably need to get through this to get to Nine Inch Nails.
AI Prompt: Make generic rock music from 1980
The only killing joke is listening to this album amirite?
I just don't like metal
Some cool moments, some of the punk and proto industrial elements were interesting but this was largely forgettable and too one-paced
As with the last few albums I have been struggling to actively listen to these so its very difficult to give a good critique or rating. This isn't really my genre, that isn't to say that I can't enjoy punk, or post-punk, just that it'd likely be a little harder for me to find music of this type that I'd enjoy. This, to me, felt somewhat typical of its genre, and therefore not too interesting nor overly enjoyable. It wasn't bad to have on at all, just not much fun either. 48/100
Mediocre.
Didnt grab me
Niet mijn stijl. Heel druk.
Not my style. Staccato hard rock something. It sounds OK, but not what I want right now.
At its best, they sound like the funk punk found on Big Boys' Where's My Towel/Industry Standard. Unfortunately, that's only a couple of tracks. Mostly it sounds like british post punk that often wishes it were heavy metal.
Did not spark any highlights during my listening experience. I'm aware of the iconic status of this band, though.
That was disappointing. Coming off the back of Brian Eno/ Pere Ubu (which are roughly contemporary) this was all a bit dull and trudgy. Requiem is the best track but still felt quite plodding. I gave dub housing a 2 and would listen to that over this everyday so I guess its a 2.
This was fine. It didn’t really grab me, but I can see the long shadow that it casts.
No, not for me. I just not very good really.
A little too heavy for my liking. Musically not bad in parts but the vocals were too punkish with repetitive phrases and more about making noise than making music.
Repetitive RepetitiveRepetitive
I like the instrumentation on most of this album, and found it engaging and varied. Unfortunately Jaz Coleman's unique combination of singing/blaring/yelling/moaning/bleating significantly detracts from (destroys?) all the tracks he sings on...which is almost all of them
Helt okej. Mer punk än New wave vilket naturligtvis är bra. Ganska lite som sticker ut dock. Saknar en rökare med hitspotential. Stark tvåa.
Roligaste post-punken hittills.
Not my favorite
Listened while running. Had good energy but not the strong coherence I would have preferred. Too much electric guitar focus.
This is very generic and not interesting to me. 2/5
I have dipped my toe into punk music during this challenge and inspired by friends. I thought I would enjoy this album more than I did. I think I’m getting old!
can't get the point
Totally whatever, didn’t seem like I needed to hear this before I died.
Ничем не запомнился. 5 из 10.
I appreciate what they are doing, really. And even like some of their lyrics but not my jam. I’m rating a 2 but really probably a 1.5
YAB(P)A Yet Another British (Punk) Album Please show me something interesting! ... Update: meh, did not care for this. All the songs sounded super repetititve. 2*
I liked it, BUT it was forgettable. Less than an hour after listening I barely remember what it sounded like. Also, I am haunted by giving a great Stevie Wonder album a 3. I guess this gets a 2.
Okay, this one I think was just a straight-up miss for me. And it wasn't even like it wasn't potentially my thing or my style or whatever, I thought the sound had potential I just didn't like what they were doing with the songs. Didn't enjoy this one.
Guter Rock
One or two were pretty okay idk
Klonk niet slecht maar blijft niet hangen.
Not my thing, shows good premises but that's it
This was too hardcore for me. I just couldn’t get through the whole thing
I enjoyed the songs where the rhythm section led from the front, mainly because i’m a sucker for prominent drums. Unfortunately this was mainly in the first half of the album. Overall i struggled to connect either this a bit too industrial, a bit too electronic for my tastes
Sometimes I raise an eyebrow when I see an album pop up, amazed that it would make it onto this list - this was one such album. I did find myself enjoying the guitar work on “Bloodsport” and “Change”, which wasn’t on the original UK release but I had zoned out so much by this point I was barely listening until that caught my attention again. Aside from that, there wasn’t much to be found on this album for me to like. Had I a half star option, it would get 2.5 - as I don’t, and it wasn’t as good as some of the albums I’ve given 3 stars to on this project, it gets a 2.
I have a very patchy record with post punk albums and this turned out to be no different. It was very much the law of diminishing returns, as I really liked Requiem and Wardance, but the longer the album went on, the more the repetition started to get to me. First it was annoying, but by the end it was just forgettable. Would be a 2.5, but I'm rounding down 2/5
Was not 100% present while listening to this, but I did think “cool rhythm” and start nodding my head a couple times, particularly Primitive and Requiem. I’m sure there’s something here, but I kinda wanted to tidy up to Norah Jones vibe this morning and not this
Wardance is cool, I got bored by song 7 and had to move on. I do like a chunky industrial guitar though.
Not feeling this one, maybe too early for its time
Loud and not exactly my vibe but some good stuff
Quite liked change, most of it is a little slow. Not totally sparking joy but interesting. Looked it up and change is sampled by LCD sound system who i lovee fave = change
I really didn’t like this one and tbh I don’t entirely get why it’s here personally… but at least it’s not Rod Stewart
An alright debut album from an industrial rock/metal band that I have little knowledge on. I thought it was pretty boring and went by quick. Some decent tracks, still not my favorite kind of music.
These guys have influenced quite a lot of musicians I like but I can’t remember what any of this album sounded like immediately after, but I’ll sit with it some more
Not a huge fan of this flat-sounding punk.
I was unfamiliar with this English hard rock/punk rock band until today. I listened to the original release (eight tracks) of this debut album. Most of the songs were unenjoyable, but for those into this genre I can appreciate that they may find it fabulous. It doesn’t quite have enough going for it to rate it three stars. Sorry Killing Joke.
(Per my last email: Well, this isn't solid gold. But that just means the next one is gonna be even better. Like Deal or No Deal.) 1980 seems early for post-punk. Maybe they should rename punk "proto-punk". Anyway, I don't know about this band. I do hear the industrial, but also the metal, and I guess the (post-) punk. It's not quite the optimal blend of those things, mainly because the singing is just not very beautiful, is it? I do like that Spotify has the lyrics to the first song written as "The Requiem/The Requieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeem". Lotta "e"s. That's fun. Still, sitting at your classic 2. Too angry, but not angry in a way I can relate to, you feel me? Highlight: 'Complications' (Sounded the most Britpop) Lowlight: 'S.O.36' (cool namesake, yay German, but long, noisily repetitive track)
I am slightly disappointed? There are some stand-out tracks but the album seems divided between its punk and industrial influences.
Not bad musically, just largely uninteresting. My favorite was honestly probably Change which wasn't even on the original album. Bloodsport was a nice instrumental. Most songs followed the same pattern of a few random lyrics followed by the name of the song said over and over again and then some instrumentals. That's a fine formula. Nothing great though.
It's not bad. But I'm pretty sure I've written, in my bedroom, better songs than some of the ones in here. But I didn't even record them because I thought they were not good enough. Maybe I'm just not a fan of this genre.
Listened to before: No Granted, this mix of post-punk, metal and industrial sounds very unique, even today. In 1980 this must have been highly innovative. Also I love Jaz Coleman's dialect and the cover is fantastic. But sadly, that's were it ends. The songwriting does not work for me and it is just not my sound. Sorry, but pass
Top track: Change
Feels like being trapped in a factory where the machines are slightly off-beat. Respect the influence, but I was bored out of my mind.
Punk rock with synth. Nothing particularly notable or appealing about this album.
Meh.
Ehh was not a fan of the singing definitely cool just not for me
It started out ok and ended up being pretty repetitive
The wait carrière it to à 2! Some nice moments here and there
picks: wardance, the wait
Is it wrong to say that I felt like every song on this album sounded the exact same? I mean obviously not every song sounded the exact same, especially in the second half which was a nice change of pace compared to the first half Also, despite being remastered (and this might just be me), the vocals on a number of songs did not sound like they were mixed very well (too quiet) Had a decent time with a few songs but pretty forgettable otherwise Favorites: None Honorable Mentions: None
M/v
I had high hopes, but too heavy and impenetrable for me...
A big blast of nothing. It may be an early innovation in post-punk, but I’m glad things moved on.
British rock de nuevo
The Cars but they saw Sabbath one time and made an album based on that.
Not really my style tbf. Pretty repetitive, but overall okay. I will say, the fact this came out in 1980 is pretty cool, innovative for the time.
2/5
This sound isn't for me
4/10 - it was alright
Decent but not thrilling
Meh. Un post punk bastante ruidoso que se hace bastante pesadito (y eso que es corto).
Noise
it's very difficult to understand why this is included in the 1001 best albums of all time. it's average and makes me wish to listen to throbbing gristle. much more like this and the game' over
Nothing to hate I guess, but pretty unremarkable.
Pretty forgettable punk album. Good energy but nothing really stood out to me.
I Love "Love Like Blood", but the debut Album is for me inaccessible
There are fun elements I like here , the atmosphere and heavy metal synth esque mood is appealing , but for the most part the melody doesn’t do enough for me to make it ultimately worth it
Okay rock album, nothing stands out to make them seem different than others
Not bad, but not my preferred genre. Fine enough to play in the background while working, but I don't see myself going back to this one. Favorite tracks: - Requiem
I hated the first few seconds of this, but then it wasn't terrible for a bit, but then I started to hate it again. There's just a lot of repetition in the songs so they seem to just not go anywhere for a really long time. There were some interesting moments but not enough of them to warrant another listen.
Nope
Lo he escuchado de pasada. No me ha parecido malo, pero tampoco me ha hecho mirar qué canción estaba sonando para guardar alguna.
Experimental goth punk.
Extremely heavy metal- fun riffs but a bit much for me.
If you want to listen to bad 1980s car chase music, then this is the album for you.
Unremarkable. There's nothing here that made me want more or have any desire to come back to it.
I'm not a punk guy. But this wasn't actively bad. The worst thing about it is the vocals, but at the same time they're deployed so infrequently as to make most of the songs very dull and repetitive. Would it kill these guys to bust out some melody? The rhythmic stuff is good to be fair, but each songs goes nowhere. It's like they came up with a bunch of riffs and then said "if we play each riff repeatedly for 3 minutes or so that's a finished song"
gitarren? ja. drums? ja. lärm? JA.
boring
Been listening to this list long enough that I'm finally to the point where good music is not strictly enough to get a good score from me. This album is fine, but there are a ton of other groips from this 2-3 years I've enjoyed more, so I don't know if there is really anything here to boost it's score. This does have some rock infused with dated 80s synths which gives it a bit of a unique feel compared to those more typical alt rock bands. My favorite was Change.
Grinding 80s rock. Nothing stood out to me.
How come most of the post punk albums on this list are so bland and boring ? 4/10 fav song : The Wait
It's "post punk", and I can tell it has roots in punk but it isn't quite so raw. That said, any 5 seconds of any song will pretty much tell you what any other 5 seconds sounds like... identically. They have some decent riffs, but you can't just repeat the same riff 60-100 times and call it a "song". I didn't dislike it, but I won't really be looking to listen to more, so rounding down to a 2.
Good old fashioned Punk through and through. Not really my cup of tea but not the worst thing I have heard either. It feels difficult to rate since its not a genre I listen to a lot or enjoy listening to.
Just alright, I would say. Honestly I'm not into rock unless it's near the fringes of the genre, and this is more typical.
Idk, this was ok. I listened to it while walking around Asda, I don’t know how much that added to the experience. I feel like.. this is the kind of music that you can see how it helped pave the way for other stuff and is important because of that, but nothing really stuck with me. I feel like the songs just kind of happened to my ears. That said, there were some melodies and bits that I enjoyed and if they’d developed into something a bit… MORE I would’ve enjoyed it more. SO36 was cool, also Requiem. Yeah, I feel like I get it but I don’t really get it. I think i would’ve been the kind of person who got it in 1980.
I feel the energy, but the music is not my cup of tea, too aggressive, raw and rough, too straight and simple.
This album sounds like Metallica being conceived in a rainy London alley under Cold War dread and cigarette smoke. “Complications” manages to sneak in an actual groove, and “Primitive” and “The Wait” deliver gritty, punk-fueled energy that I don't hate. The rest belongs in a museum—one with barbed wire, strobe lights, and a strict No MAGA Hats policy. Respect is due, but I won’t be streaming “S.O.36” unless I’m trying to clear a Proud Boy rally like the US military blasting Twisted Sister at Noriega in Panama ca. 1989.
not my style. i could see how this perhaps set the stage for like rock operas, kinda? like a coheed and cambria almost, i guess. i dunno, all in all this wasn't really my jam but i guess not everything is going to be
Not bad, but not great. I was vibing with some songs, but then there were long stretches of mediocre boredom. High 2, Low 3. Cool album art!
In the coolest way
The best thing about this is the album cover
#93 - not the energy I was expecting from post punk. This is just kinda... Boring? Muted? Not for me
For what era this came out it's pretty stellar. Would it be something I'd ever listen to again? Nah.
Noisy, slightly punky. Fine, I let it wash over me although the riff of the opening Requiem was a strong start. Not going to re-listen to this, though.
Not great, but not the worst. Probably won't come back to it.
Heavy metal but not really? Not great.
It wasn't pure instrumental, but it felt like it was, and not in a good way.
Post punk New Wave? This was before the "Eighties"
🍑 besides Complications.
This album is full of 2 minute songs stretched to 3-4 minutes
kinda barren, minimalist post punkish grungy rock that is similar to the character select screen of a N64 monster truck. pretty repetitive, almost groovy, but not quite. 2.5/5
I first bought this album when it came out and I thought it was mostly boring. 45 years’ distance has not improved my opinion of it. This album has a kind of black metal meets post punk thing going on and you can see how many bands subsequently have been influenced by it; Nirvana, My Bloody Valentine etc etc would all acknowledge a debt. Non of that makes it an intrinsically listenable album.
Didn't felt memorable after listening to it. Had few cool songs tho but as a album it didn't moved me. (2.5/5.0)
I had heard of this group but never heard of any of these songs. Not horrible but not great.
Utterly forgettable, like too many of the UK based albums on this list.
Pretty good but not spectacular
I found most of the album to be corny tbh 4/10
I love post punk! but hate the brits now :/
Not for me lol
I didn't like it, but I appreciate it's not the same old British punk as on the rest of this list. 2/5
Maybe it’s just not my genre, but I found this to be too much of the same thing in each song. Repeated choruses way too many times. Put another verse in or trim the length. 2.5⭐️
meh
It was alright. I don’t see what the fuss is 1001 album worthy: No - 51/95
Ну The Wait норм. Но больше не хочу это слушать. Для специфичных ситуаций и мест (завод,заброшка,гаражи?).
Ihan megalaahaava, en ihan tajua tätä… koska muuten goottikolina vois toimia, miksi tätä on hidastettu 0.5-kertaiseksi?
Aineksia parempaan. 2,5
Meh...this album was boring. The singer's voice wasn't great. Some of the rhythms were fine, but nothing caught my interest. "Requiem" kinda sucked and is one of their most streamed songs. The album was fine overall but not something I'd return to. Liked Songs: "Bloodsport" , "The Wait" , "Change"
Not bad, but very clumsy and sricky in its`s core
Not particularly enjoyable.
It’s a joke that this album is even on this list because it isn’t killing anything. While it’s not the worst Brit Bias choice from recent days, it still isn’t very good. The only thing this had going for it is that it was tolerable and I was able to finish the album
Very repetitive, basically carried one riff throughout the entire song each time, the riffs were pretty good though but there wasn’t much to this
i listened to this so long ago that i actually have no clue how to rate it, so we're going with a 2.5
A hard driving rock album where every song is just good enough. Unfortunately it lacks any real zip, that would bring me back to listen to it again.
This could have been great if the the songs were kept to about 2 minutes. The same riff over and over, with the lack of any real vocal melody begins to tire. 2.5 stars.
Ok electro rock
This album had like 2 enjoyable moments out of the 60 minutes
p460. 1980. 2 stars. Angry, unpleasant noise that goes on for far too long. Bonus point for the quality drumming and bass and the occasional half decent riff.
Kinda samey is the vibe I got
All a bit samey. There's hints of something interesting there, but they're hidden quite well.
It was fine but pretty repetitive
Pretty samey, got the vibe from track 1
Spricht nicht wirklich an.
Not my vibe
This is like a garage band that should have never left the garage.
Fav: Bloodsport Least Fav: Wardance Not a complete joke
Music I can appreciate with that death metal scream that loses my interest.
Pretty plodding and repetitive. I like the punk vibes but there is not much imagination to this.
Meh. There’s a reason nobody likes post punk. It’s just experimental music and somebody singing poorly. Don’t like and this was no exception. Absolutely not remarkable.
what is the fascination with putting sooooo many Brit-punk bands on this list? oh look, here's another. sounds like so many others. blah, blah, blah.
Some good grooves but I found this mostly dull. 2/5
Just load punk noise. At least there is some rhythm.
2,5
I just didnt like the style
Punk hate the world music
Okay album, but nothing amazing
Not for me
4/10
New sound for me. Kinda metal mixed with 80s dance music? 2/3
Fine album, nothing really stood out
A bit much but ok
Album 582 of 1001 Killing Joke - Killing Joke (1980) Rating : 2.75 / 5 British Post Punk - This is sometimes good but also sometimes pretty bad. Probably worth another listen but just didn't grab me all the way the first time.
Only notable for the interesting synths. Otherwise yet another boring post punk (and as a fan of older and modern punk music I hate that term) album on this list.
Some albums I just need to see the write up of why it makes it into this list...
Why does this remind me of Cut the Crap by the Clash and why is My Sharona suddenly in my head
Favorite Track: Requiem
I'm tired of groups where you can't make out the lyrics! Derivitive of its era, each track depends on the clashing guitar chords with little musical input although 'Complications', 'so36' and 'changes' have possibilities with more production work and song structure. All in all an album I will not bother returning to.
That wasn't funny
Joke is a accurate description
I enjoyed the instrumentals but, really could not stand the vocals. Funny enough after doing some research it seems like they had Dave Grohl on drums, which was a stand out.
Cool industrial sound for 1980; Completely unknown to me and probably would have listened to them in the 90s
Theres good and bad here. First the good: the drummer is amazing, at times it reminded me of SoD which is always nice, theres not a lot of heavy metal on this platform so its always nice to see it pop up. Second the bad: the singer is not great, sounds like he is going to hawk a loogie through the speakers, the british versions where he is not doing flemo is ok but doesn’t really match the tone. His tempo was kind of off throughout the whole album. The other instrumentals other than drums were super mediocre. The songs were too long and I got sick of each one after like a minute. Overall mostly negative with a couple positives. 4/10
Not really for me
Ehhh I’m good on this
Eh this is just okay. Singer looks like Alice Cooper.
nope
Nothing of real value here.
Bit muddy
when you ask AI to make a punk album and it just can't do that real punk edge
I had a bad cold over the weekend and this didn't help things.
Half-interesting sounds that go nowhere interesting.
Didn't hate
Is this supposed to be important? I’ve heard of Killing Joke before, but this doesn’t really make me need to listen to them again. Feels like a suburban form of edgy, even if they are British punks.
I wished I liked this more, but I can't get behind it. Synths just ruin it for me, nor do I care for the vocals. I do like the tempo changes, but I then I run out of things to like. I've had this problem forever.
Not great. Felt like noise. Can hear a little Pink Floyd, maybe Billy Idol, Tool, but the worst parts.
1/8, 13%
Ok rock album.
Spent a lot of the time trying to figure out if this was mega distorted or it was just the vocals on Wardance. Was also surprised it was from 1980 so kudos for that. Musically I thought this was good, but jeez sometimes vocals really let things down.
Some fun riffs and musical effects but this ultimately gets dragged down by the poor vocals. Can definitely see the influence on later punk and metal, my preference is just for something a bit more refined. Listened to: at home. Favorite tracks: The Wait, Change
This album sounds very industrial and even features a goth robot as the vocalist on a few tracks. There's definitely something interesting going on, between the futuristic background sounds and the scratchy production they've managed to blend metal, atmosphere, techno-dub, and garage punk into something that sorta works. I liked a few songs and I do think this was ahead of it's time in the 80's. But I don't really like the band name and some of it feels repetitive. Didn't stand out but decent.
I wanted to like this more than I did. Didn't grab me in any way and didn't do anything nearly as well as some of the other early British punk albums we've heard so far. It felt awful long for a 35 minute run time. For me this is a miss and one I would remove from the list. 1.71 stars
So the Killing Joke is an iconic Alan Moore/Brian Bolland Batman graphic novel that explores the origins of the Joker, how Batman wrought him onto the world, and how a cycle of systematic revenge, physiological torture, and, basically, man's inhumanity to man, is really just an ouroboros and those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it. It's a 3½ to 4 star Batman story and a 2½ to 3 star animation adaptation. This has nothing to do with anything I just said, but I hope you find what I said more enjoyable than this album.
1980 rock, but British and aggressive
Nothing special
More obscure British horseshit. Nothing too exciting about this album. Another post punk/industrial rock record. Favourite songs: Wardance, The Wait, Requiem Least favourite songs: Tomorrow's World, S.O.36, Change 2/5
Not for me
Ugh
I didn't find this one particularly memorable.
Killing Joke sounds like German music with English vocals. Requiem is a good start but it’s really downhill from there. By Wardance I was out. There are some decent beats but it’s cold industrial for the most part 4.2/10
Seemed fine, wasn’t in the mood for it and lasted 3.5 songs
2.5 It was ok. Nothing really stood out with one go-around. I thought it sounded more like a Clash rip-off than a precursor to industrial music.
It’s ok but does seem pretty influential
I wonder if there will ever be a time in my life that I'm into music like this. Or just any of the dark 80s synthy type goth bands. This was insufferable for me, but I'd understand why fans of a band like, say, The Cure would like them. I feel like this list makes the mistake of taking fringe genres and not only giving you the AAA of them, but also the AA, A, and dare I say B, and C's of the genre. That's how this feels anyways. Not for me.
Tja, punkig ist es schon irgendwie.... Ich mag es nicht. Zu viel Schlagzeug, Kaum Melodien. Interessant
Yeeah... that's not my kind of music. The guitar riffs are nice, but that doesn't make it a good album for me. Very chaotic in moments. In a bad way.
2/5
The album was short so it was over quickly. Nothing particularly noteworthy about it. No need to revisit it.
Not my style
Probably technically good but I don't like metal. Hard to judge so I rated based on my preference and not something more objective.
Requiem
I liked some of the guitar work, but just couldn't get into the album. Not the worst but definitely not the best
2024-04-03...
Enjoyed some but not enough
Played on loop at every record store in the 80’s.
something about electronica and punk and the way this sounds tells me it should work buy this feels like a miss.
There was some cool stuff on this album but I still don’t like punk (or post punk in this case). I enjoyed how 80s and electronic it sounded at times. As well as the weird filters on the lead vocals
"Kasumi's review for this album has inspired me to hate on the list author in this review. I can think of 20 albums off the top of my head that deserve a spot on this list but this white man just keeps whipping out the same (often mediocre) genre of old British rock that requires you to read 20 Wikipedia pages to understand. I'm sure they're all significant in some way but to quote my wife, "good music shouldn't have to rely on the listener's prior knowledge to be enjoyable or to convey a message". Nothing against this particular album though it was fine I guess. There were too many songs where they just yell the same word every few seconds (ie. change) and they added remixes to the album so I had to sit through that too. Favourites: requiem, bloodsport. 2/5
apparently this band was super influential and was cited as a major inspiration for nirvana and metallica. i dont really see how tbh because this was kinda mid. i guess in 1980s UK this was the most exciting thing going on. the guitar line was unique and everything was well executed, i just didnt really enjoy sorry guys. also the repeated songs were not good enough to warrant listening to twice. 2/5, i would've enjoyed more if it was more lyrical or melodical or anything, just felt like listening to a tank drive over electric guitars
Better than expected. Not completely enjoyable.
Didn’t care for this one, just not my style
In general I love this genre, but there was something off about this. Too experimental, maybe?
A bit strange.
Genren ja synkkyyden puolesta voisin tykätä, mutta ei vaan ollut minusta kovin hyviä biisejä. Pari ihan jees, mutta kokonaisuus ei kolmoseen yllä.
It has it's moments. I'm getting tired of the excessive UK post punk on this list though. Will I listen to again: 20%
Not terrible. But I hate Punk so not a fan.
unique and interesting. was an experience to listen to the first time, but i will not be repeating. i could not jam with the weird combination of new-wave with heavier elements and goth.
Again, no. Not for me thank you.
A LOT better than I thought.
The main detractors here are wasted space and the awful vocals. The music is not bad, honestly pretty cool at most points, but entirely too many songs just have wasted, empty space with repeated riffs and/or odd background noises. The vocals are abysmal, in my opinion. I feel like there's next to no talent or effort on that front. I'm not big in the industrial/punk scene, so maybe this is neat somewhere, but not for me. Fav track: The Wait
Very mediocre. Side note - What's with the Euro bias on this list? How are there so many underwhelming European artists on this list of albums to listen to before you die?
I know they are very influential, but I was honestly kinda bored? Only song that really caught my interest was S.O.36
Willing poke.
I really like music like this. But this isn't really a very interesting version of this style. Strange choice.
not my usual
I thought I would love this but found it underwhelming.
2.5
Heavy, metal I guess. Not for me
Yeah... no.
Some bands’ music sounds more important than it is. Their tight playing and sonic experiments with studio sounds don’t save them.
kolme debyyttiä putkeen heh. laku biisit olivat niin tyltsää punkki poppua että en edes huomannut että loppupuollea on kiinmostaviakin biisejä. noh, LIIAN MYÖHÄISTÄ heh...ei ollisi knanatttanut bloodsport
