I started trying to be an analytical listener. But quickly realized that was the wrong energy for this album. Once I was able to just kinda fall into the groove it was a fun listen. Although it felt like very little actual trumpet playing went down.
First time I ever sat and listened to a jazz album straight thru. Not anti- instrumental jazz, just more of a classic rock gal. That said - holy hell, what an album.

I’ve learned that jazz is a genre that takes time to appreciate. On my first listen, I was not impressed at all. By my third, I loved almost everything this project had to offer.
Enjoyed this as background music
I really like this album. It’s not as substantial as Bitches Brew, but it’s pretty close to as important and you can see the progression. In some ways I like it more. I can see a connection between this album and late Talk Talk into post rock, Tortoise, etc. It’s smaller in scope and edits are rough. But it’s got some really good stuff going on. I keep bouncing between a 4 and 5. Rounding up to a 5. On the grand scheme of things this is so big.

Nice, relaxing instrumental album, with a great depth of different instruments, tones, rhythm, etc. A good album to play when doing things such as revision, artwork, music, etc. Clearly a huge amount of detail put into it. The album would of rated higher if there where a bit of vocals, but tbh i dont think singing would of really fitted in with this track, but it's overall a pretty perfect instrumental album.

5/5. Just innovative and unique, trying stuff out, expanding the realm of what jazz could be. There seems to be a conversation, between diverse groups of people and still co-mingling. There's just so much happening in these two songs. Quiet and tapping at pandora's box, wanting to let it out but just playing with it. In the end, it's just a great album, switching between jazz and rock with such ease.
Lekker relaxte muziek dit. Luistert misschien zelfs iets te gemakkelijk, maar wel weer goed gedaan. Lijkt me ook mooie muziek om bij in slaap te vallen, en dat is niet negatief bedoeld deze keer.
Het eerste nummer is veel te vaag. Het doet me daardoor niet veel. 1 ster. In het tweede nummer is de repeterende basis catchy. Bijna triphop, met daaromheen geen zang maar getoeter. 3,5 ster. Gemiddeld: een 2 plus
Jazz kan twee kanten op gaan: zenuwachtig en chaotisch gedoe of rustig en relaxed. Dit is het laatste. Isaac Hayes heeft hier vast inspiratie uit op gedaan voor zijn shaft muziek, de drums op deel 1 van het album zijn zowat een kopie. Het album heet waarschijnlijk Silent Way, omdat Miles het eerste kwartier stilletjes in een hoekje zat, want de toeter komt er pas na een kleine 14 minuten in. Deel 2 begint meer als ambient van Brian Eno. Het past beter bij deze jazz dan bij Brian Eno moet ik zeggen. Eerdere albums van Miles (birth of the cool, kind of blue) heb ik beloond met een 2, omdat ik eerder de neiging had ze door te zappen dan af te luisteren. Deze valt me redelijk mee, waarschijnlijk door het grote aandeel van de gitaar.

I wanted to love this but it just didn’t grab me. I wasn’t really in the headspace to enjoy something this drowsy and aimless. I enjoyed the other Miles Davis we got a lot better, I think I prefer my jazz at a higher energy level.
This is probably my favorite kind of jazz. There's just the right amount of everything here and every instrument is played perfectly.

I’ve listened to over 100 albums at this point. And although there haven’t been that many, the one constant factor throughout everything is that I have not heard a single jazz album I didn’t love. My English teacher called it “pretentious”, but I couldn’t disagree more. It is consistently one of the most fun, innovative, intense, and emotive forms of music there is. And In a Silent Way, one of Miles Davis’ many exceptional achievements, might just be the finest piece of jazz music I’ve ever heard. Composed of just two songs, one being 20 minutes long, the other being nearly there, it is jazz fusion pushed to the highest level of quality. And that fusion really comes into play, because although the foundational elements at play here are rather standard for jazz, the star of the show is John McLaughlin and his guitar. It completely changes the atmosphere, and pushes this record to the level of greatness that it’s at. But the whole band is absolutely stellar. I think the title Shh / Peaceful perfectly incapsulates what feels so extraordinary about this. It’s calm and serene. There is no biting intensity. It is just simply existing. Like the essence of life personified into music. The second song ramps things up slightly, but not so much where it completely destroys the vibe the band had built. Davis was by and large one of the greatest, if not the greatest jazz musicians of all time. Both a master of his own instrument and a master at creating balance in a group of other massively talented musicians. Rating: 10/10

This is the sort of thing I appreciate about having undertaken a project like this one. An opportunity to go a little more off the obvious path (Kind of Blue, Bitch’s Brew) and get into a less familiar album by a massively influential artist. It’s kind of amazing people would consider this album controversial when you consider how influential it feels. Maybe sort of like Dylan goes electric. Whatever the case, this solidifies that Miles was so much more than what he is commonly known for.
If only 2 tracks on the entire album, it is a masterclass work by Miles Davis! Impressive work of the time. This is supposedly a fusion work but I feel like it's more jazz than anything else. I enjoyed listening to the entire record. It was flowing and relaxing while bright and dynamic all at the same time.
I'm a big fan of Miles. This is a great record. Honestly, people can prefer various eras of Miles, but as a body of work, it's amazing. Outrageous that this recording is entirely from a SINGLE THREE HOUR SESSION. Unbelievable.

really really good jazz, not boring, but subtle. the cover fits the music quite well
I don't DISLIKE jazz, I just don't know if I get it HOWEVER, this album chilled me right out, calmed me and gave me early Santana stoner rock vibes. LOVED IT. dimmed the lights, fed some cool blue LED into the room and soaked it in. I can't pretend I understand the structuring any more than I ever did, but those are some cats baby, and I feel cooler after hanging out with them
OK now we are talking. Not that keen on the Vamp section of this, but the slow moody bits are enjoyable and atmospheric. Still not a 5 due to its lack of really solid content.

The trumpet parts were listenable but the backing tracks - organ, drums were so dated sounding that it really ruined this music for me. Jazz is already not my thing and to have something so of it’s time instead of timeless made this unenjoyable. Extra star for Miles Davis’ trumpet
Rating: 10/10 Masterpiece. Beautiful. Transcendent. Meditative. Mindblowing jazz album that keeps delivering. Miles Davis is a genius, knowing when to supplement the gorgeous instrumentals (guitar, drums, and bass) and when to shine with his trumpet. The trumpet tone on this album is fantastic, rather than blaring on some of his other albums. One of the best albums I've heard so far.
I don’t really listen to jazz, but I can say I genuinely enjoyed the sound of this album. For me, it’s music that evokes a certain mood. I could just listen and think, or listen and daydream, or clean, or have a conversation with it in the background. It’s very abstract and spacey sounding, but put me in a good head space.

Love, love, love this album! It took me back to living in Houston and working in the Galleria high-rise. My office had a huge window and I would listen to smooth jazz radio and watch the traffic back up. This album is very relaxing.
I would have to be in a very specific mood to choose this album. Not a huge fan.
So I listened to this when I was at work. It was catchy, and classic. It reminded me of some of he earlier works that I was exposed to when I took a class titled "The History of American Jazz" in the early 90's. Realistically this is not my genre of music....but this album was interesting to get through. 3

I listened to this while working out. I am sure I would have been more open and attentive to it otherwise. However as is on this listen, nothing grabbed me.

It is jazz. It feels very long, longer than it actually is. I appreciate the artistry but won't listen again.
Duality of albums like that - first part is almost impossible for me to digest. Different instruments playing their own songs all at the same time, with some overarching melody from Miles. Very hard song to get through. Second song starts the same, but after some time all parts come together and they finally sound like one band. Miles is really amazing in the second part, and the background actually is very good on its own too. This album won't turn me into jazz addict, or even a casual fan, but it's a nice stepping stone. Let's give it another 10 years, maybe mu musical taste will be more sophisticated then.

Great Jazz!!
Jazz-rock at its finest. Also, if there was a list of best late night albums, this one would be one of the top albums on it.
All for long jazz epics but these really don’t bring enough excitement to the table to justify the runtime. There’s some great flair for mellow jazz here and there, but you have to throw way more spice in to keep things moving over the course of several tens of minutes.
Didn’t really stick with me. I think it is good for background listening.

Miles Davis (and you don't have to hear this from me) is probably the best musician at his instrument in the world of jazz. Never heard of this album. it is a big departure from his conventional "cool" jazz recordings. Especially surprised with the last 3 minutes of in a silent way that sounded more like new age music than jazz music. Nice listen, good vibe.

During my late teenage years, I was blessed with the opportunity to join a jazz orchestra. Each Saturday, I would catch the bus, unpack my case and try to hit the harmony lines. It was good fun: the bandleader was charismatic, my band members were encouraging, the tunes were exciting. But the real joy came at solo time. The soloists would have come up with new lines, new melodies, and explored new thoughts during the week. The real beauty came when they started going down a new pathway for the first time during practice. We could see and hear creation before us. On this album, we not only hear Miles Davis, arguably the most gifted jazz musician of all time, explore new territory, but are also blessed with other giants of the genre sniffing at the boundaries. And not just one at a time, but all together, foraging here and there, leading each other on, responding, riding the drift of each other's thoughts. It's thrilling.
I like jazz. I like beautiful melodies portrayed over rich harmonies, the freedom of the musicians in their expression, and the synergy between band members seems to be unique to the improvisational style. When jazz becomes more long, rambling streams of consciousness with so many threads simultaneously and sequentially that grasping any of them becomes a challenging feat, I begin to enjoy the experience far less. I appreciate this album for its atmospheric feel and its influence on the use of electric instruments, however I can not say with honesty that this is the style of jazz that I would choose to listen to for pleasure.

Quite a cool chilled out album. I liked it
Both songs on the album are a jam all throughout. The instrumentals are very groovy and well done. While there is definitely talent behind the album, I have to say I found myself bored at several points of listening. I wouldn't say all songs should be capped at a shorter time, but this is one of the examples where it felt like sort of an eternity of listening to something very monotonic.

I wasn’t sure I was going to be able to sit through all of this since it was definitely out of my normal musical comfort zone but I’m glad I did if for nothing else but the experience. Very enjoyable listen.
Miles' first "electric" album is subtle, nuanced, and mesmerizing. Virtuosos creating and reacting to each other in real time. A fully immersive experience.

Big fan of Mr. Davis. Big fan of Mr. Hancock, the other players, and the world of fusion. However, if there was something real special in there I didn't notice. I could picture a sort of ethereal transcendence if I weren't so preoccupied with work so I'm inclined to grant 3.5 stars rather than 2.5, given I was neither gallivanting about a misty who-knows-where nor sat at an inner-city bus stop watching cars and strange drunkards move about the evening commuter frenzy. Boy... 4 it is.

Not my cup of tea, kinda appreciate it, but it seems to throw noises in that it knows will annoy me, and I don't know why it wants to do that to me. I'm too tired for that shit. ranked up a bit because there were some really satisfying bits where randomness kind of melded together to reach melody. I'd rather not listen to it again though.

The album had 2 songs on it. The first song was 18 minutes long with so many instruments going at once that didn’t flow at all, in my opinion. I didn’t care for it.
Liked this way more than I expected. I didn't realize this was considered his first true foray into "fusion," though I think that term is kind of weird and limiting. I'd say this is less fusion and more just jazz but with non-traditional instruments (electric piano, organ, and guitar, basically). But I can see how his style is changing somewhat as well, with different types of chord progressions (less progression or change, for one thing). Definitely a really enjoyable listen.

Jazz jazz jazz! I’m jazzing everywhere! I like this more than yesterday’s album, felt like more approachable jazz. Now instead of Emma Stone, I’m Ryan Gosling showing someone else the way of jazz.
This really blew me away. I've only listened to Miles Davis' most well known albums; Birth of the Cool, So What, Bitches Brew, etc. But hadn't gotten around to this one yet. The playing and the grooves are fantastic on this, I can see why it's so well regarded. It's a very obvious precursor to the very improvisational Bitches Brew too. Really makes me want to check out more of Dave Holland and Chick Corea's solo work as well.
I have such a hard time listening to jazz, but I listened to this in the morning and I must say that it gave me a sense of mental surplus throughout the day, really lovely

The Stooges to Bitches Brew's Iggy Pop. Herbie Hancock and Wayne shorter still shine through Davis' unbothered experimentation. Great introduction album for musically oriented non-jazz folk. Just a shame I cant list shining track because of the recording structure.
Maybe Davis’ most intimate record, a really beautiful and contemplative album that somehow came out only a year before the far more out-there Bitches Brew. It lags slightly towards the end, as I feel the middle section of track 2 maybe doesn’t quite develop enough, but the closing few minutes is so serene and adds a really rewarding sense of finality to the project

I really enjoyed this. Just two songs and a very enjoyable experience.
2 songs. Most would call that a 7", but not in the Jazz world. Two of the most mellow and calming jazz tracks to ever be recorded. Well, probably not, but I'm not a huge fan of jazz, and this just hit the spot while doing the dishes (usually an anger-inducing task for me).
Super solid. 2 songs that just keep going, but the album isn't obnoxiously long. It's just a great jazz album.

Zzzzzz This album was pretty lackluster for me. The first song, shhh/Peaceful, played off the same two cords the whole time. Which wouldn't be a problem if it wasn't an 18 minute song. It got very old and almost annoying. In a silent way wasn't as stagnant but it was still way too slow for my tastes

A quiet jazz album. Not much Miles trumpet on side one, but a reasonable amount on the superior title track. All the musicians are now legendary and well-known. Not actually ambient as many critics claim, but just laid back and very loosely funky, albeit repetitive. I know it well, so have difficulty listening to it with fresh ears and can't say if it is actually boring because recognition makes it pleasant. Certainly an easier listen than Bitches Brew and perhaps the opposite in terms of noise and jazz rock to my personal favourite A Tribute To Jack Johnson. Still a good and importantly progressive electric Miles Davis jazz record.

Despite the slight apprehension I went into this album with due to seeing the lengths of both tracks, I actually enjoyed it quite a bit. I love songs that feel sort of hypnotic and allow you to get lost in the music, and that's what this album did for me. Both tracks feel almost ambient and atmospheric and really pulled me into the feeling of the album. Due to its length and aforementioned characteristics, however, I can't say I would actually listen to this album very often outside of using it as background music. This is even despite Davis' doubtless musical talent, because truth be told, it did get a *little* boring for me after a while.

Very listenable, but I'm just not a big fan of jazz.
This a very peaceful listen, like the name of the first song would suggest. On the first song the guitar sound was a standout for me because of how clean it sounds to a point where it can almost be mistaken for a guitar. Both almost 20 minutes Songs also feature parts where an instrument is giving kind of a theme and some other instruments playing over it. Overall this is something that you can put on in the background and that puts you in a pleasant and chill mood, but that doesn't demands your attention.

Good album - obviously masters at play here - but it doesn’t hit home to me as Davis’ earlier records. Still lovely though.

I know nothing about jazz and this is supposed to be a fusion sound for Davis. I guess I can tell based on the background music, but I am not smart enough to figure out exactly what that means and recognize it without being told. Great background music and that's not a backhanded compliment.
I thought this was really great. Def a 'type' of jazz that I enjoy listening to. Not really my 'genre' but I really dug this - squeaks out a 4.
a 36 minute long jazz album consisting of 2 18 minute songs is bound to be good but the second song was really cool in it’s own right
This could very well be the birth of fusion. Some jazz purists may not like it but I like the experimental style of this record. Bold and somewhat courageous outing from Miles. Always pushing the boundaries.
The genius of Miles Davis cannot be adequately described with words. He's just so uniquely... Miles. He elevates the players around him. This was his first venture into more psychedelic jazz fusion sounds. The guitar playing of John McLaughlin particularly stands out to me here. Excellent record.
BL: my previous serving of Miles Davis was somber and beautiful, I’ll be interested to hear what this serving has to offer me. I think this may be a more eclectic record than the last judging by what I can see at face value but I will have to see. Truly a spectacular artist, and I loved the first record. AL: two very well crafted suites to listen to and engage with. The first one does greatly outshine the second however, for that reason alone I do think it is not quite as good as his previous project on this generator. Still an amazing listen none the less FT: “Shhh / Peaceful” 4/5

Two Song album that is rather enjoyable.

Another master piece by Miles Davis. The space and nostalgia expressed over these two songs is captivating. Miles and co take the listener through an interesting mellow journey for over 30 minutes. Sublime work! Also, is it only me but this album serves as the preamble for Bitches Brew?

Am I a bad person for not getting it? I'm can just feel someone in a velvet jacket with an impeccably waxed 'stashe and a jaunty Gitanes hanging out the of corner of his mouth calling me an "uncouth clod". Yes, they're talented. Yes, it's a pleasant enough sound. But where are the feels?
I love Miles Davis but I'm more of a Birth of The Cool guy than this style.

In my memory this was a clear 5-star Miles Davis album. Still liked the album of course - after all, it was a major influence on Laughing Stock, one of the best albums ever - but it took a while before I was convinced again. score: 9/10
I have a slight preference for Bitches Brew that came out less than a year later, but this is nevertheless another great Miles Davis album.

Have never been interested in fusion jazz. My History of Jazz professor tried his best to get me into it years ago but it just wasn’t my thing. Have always loved Miles Davis’ early work and I didn’t not like this record. It just wasn’t my favorite. “In a Silent Way” was the better of the two tracks. It was nice to listen to while I read.
It's a bit standard jazz. A lot of it feels like it's music for a 70s crime drama. Doesn't do much for me.
Very interesting. I don’t normally listen to jazz. But, I really enjoyed this album. It was soothing, entertaining, dynamic, and atmospheric. It almost feels like they’re taking you on a journey The piano, drums, and bass provided wonderful grooving backing. Miles’ trumpet is spectacular and the guitar and saxophone fit in perfectly. What can I say, I think I’d be willing to buy this.

I have only heard his earlier bebop albums. I didn’t think jazz fusion was something I would like at all, but I did. I liked how with only two tracks, he played around a central idea, wandered off, came back and then explored some more.

Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Joe Zawinul, Tony Williams, Chick Corea, John McLaughlin, and Dave Holland are the CSNY of jazz. Despite the gigaton of talent, nobody shows off - and that's kind of the point. So many of the conventions of jazz thrown out the window, just absolute pros at the top of their game given the freedom to lock into a groove with one another and make something extraordinary. This is the epitome of "you gotta know all the rules before you can break em." This first track is literally just one chord and it's electrifying. The title track for me starts to really get exciting around just after the 11 minute mark. A masterclass in minimalism, tone, and sharing the stage. Controversially I enjoy this more than Bitches Brew!

Great early electric Miles. I listened to this yesterday, after not hearing it for years and my takeaway is this could be the greatest jazz-rock jam session ever. Miles surrounded himself with amazing talent. Tony Williams (who recruited many of the other guys), Herbie Hancock, Chick Cores, Wayne Shorter, John McLaughlin, Joe Zawinul and Dave Holland are as good as it gets and Davis gets tremendous mileage from these young players.
Not a jazz fan. Don't know if this is great or just average. Someone else can decide, but won't be listening again.

My main problem with jazz is not that it sounds bad, but rather that it just patters along without going anywhere. At the same time, it's marked by too many jarring changes to blend into a nice but unobtrusive background listening mode.

Even as an avid jazz listener, I wanted to not like this so badly when I saw it was a 2 song album. Alas, Miles Davis delivers again.

In A Silent Way is one of the best work by Miles Davis and a standout album of 1969. This music is hypnotic and soothing all the way through.

Jazz rock fusion but nothing much to this one for me, was ok.
Would could I possibly say about Miles Davis that hasn't already been said by people far more knowledgeable than a "meat and potatoes" guy like myself? He's a legend obviously, and this is a great album. Some of his music that I've listened to doesn't connect with me, but this one does for sure. It's easy to listen to, but you can still appreciate the subtlety, the nuance, the intricacy. This may sound like sacrilege but the keyboard on the first track reminds me a bit of Ray Manzarek's keyboards on the Doors album L.A. Woman - I wonder if Ray was influenced by this. Anyway, great album, would listen again. 4/5.

Better than expected, a great journey of an album
I liked it even though this is not my favorite type of jazz music.
Highlights: The opening of In a Silent Way, Peaceful Leave Em's: N/A Overall Thoughts: Miles Davis makes good jazz music. I don't feel at liberty to offer much more critique because I don't know a whole lot about the genre. I think there are settings in which jazz music can be more potent and interesting such as performed live or as background sounds, but I wouldn't really play this album to do any intense listening. I do prefer the slow jazz music as I think it does a better job communicating emotion. The album consisting of just a front and back side does inhibit my normal rating system of rating each song so I had to freestyle a bit for the score. Score Breakdown: 2.800 & 3 -> 2.900
I gave kind of blue a 5, it is my favorite jazz album of all time! I feel like this one is like a long lazy jam session with no direction. It's not bad it just don't feel like an album.
