Nice but a not enough grit in my opinion.

Out of my wheelhouse but a good listen. Chaotic jazz with occasional really pretty post-rock-sounding guitar interludes. Looked it up and apparently it was the beginning of "electric jazz" which was fusion with rock elements. Definitely got that here, but more jazz and post-rock fusion. Dope. I was at a [7].

Was I born not understanding/liking jazz unless it is as freaky as hell like e.g. The Comet is Coming or Black Midi? Miles Davis must be brilliant, everyone tells you he is. But I just can't get a hold on it. As music was pleasant, I give it 3 stars

I imagine this album is considered revolutionary and a landmark. But that didn't stop me from feeling like this was more of a band challenge than the most interesting album in Miles Davis' collection. Even as the different players came in and played beautifully, it felt static. Were there chord changes? The drums were certainly not going anywhere. Obviously all by design, and no doubt a collection of monster players, I enjoyed and was ill at ease in equal measure as this record played.

I want to love Miles Davis because he just oozes coolness. But truth be told I put this on and then it seeped into the background. Maybe it was the timing. I never get blown away by him like other people do.

Another effortlessly cool Miles Davis album, this time with more unusual, electronic sounding backing. Apparently recorded in one day and comprising two tracks (with several movements). I liked side 1 best. Rating: 3.5/5 Playlist track: Shhh / Peaceful Date listened: 19/03/23

Für ein Jazz-Album ungewöhnlich, dass verschiedene Takes zusammengeschnibbelt werden. Man merkt es. Ist dann aber insgesamt nicht weiter schlimm. Ein harmonisches Gipfeltreffen der zeitgenössischen Jazz-Größen.

I don't know if I'm smart enough for Jazz

I'm not really sure if I like this more than Kind of Blue or not, but both were nice. I really liked the titular track. It felt very nostalgic and home-y. It was a nice tune to return to. I was a bit bored at time, but oh well. My favourite song was In A Silent Way.

Miles Davis, clearly, has the ability to create sublime and transcendent music. There are sections of this record that ooze with grace, sections that contain the burning white coals of genius, sections that give me that same feeling as when I first closed my eyes and got immersed into a song. However, Miles uses Modality as a cure-all instead of as a singular prescription. There can be a beauty in creation without mooring; but it is my belief that the lack of standard harmony and musical context detracts from this album and, unfortunately, composes the majority of its play time.

This was actually quite mellow, not the usual squeaky trad jazz so I enjoyed it. Can't say I'd look for it to listen to. 3*

Всратое стерео. И какой-то чересчур раздражающе монотонный бас в самом начале. Нет, ну а что ещё говорить про Майлса Дэвиса? Влад нас уже отчехвостил за то, что мы его не увАжили в прошлый раз. Хотя в этот раз, мне кажется, стало чуть проще, и потому не так тяжело воспринимать эту музыку. Беру свои слова назад, проблемы со стерео были только в самом-самом начале, не знаю, почему. Вообще оказывается, что если в момент прослушивания длинных джазовых треков заниматься чем-то параллельным, то в целом они и не такие уж и длинные. Подумаешь, 18 минут... я вот успел баги в коде пофиксить за это время. В общем, всё-таки наверное это чрезмерно долго. Но в этот раз было комфортнее.

First song made me feel like i was at a jazz club hearing someone jam out. Second song first 4 minutes reminds me of Valheim.

Wasn’t my favorite Miles Davis album, but nevertheless, Miles Davis is still amazing.

I didn’t think albums were made with only one song per side until the Prog rockers. Who knew? I like jazz but don’t know it well enough to appreciate the nuances of the esoteric side of it.

You know… when I listen to an album I always read up on the background of it, and here it’s quite positive: acclaimed seminal album, his transition into fusion jazz, the use of electrical instruments, all that… eh… jazz. But however important the album is, it’s one genre I really can’t get behind, fusion jazz. I’m not a huge jazz fan to begin with, but fusion jazz is just a bit too much. Just Miles Davis is fine, but the rest of the instruments… meh.

38 minutes for two songs. OK. Chill background music while I was working tonight.

I can recognize the immense talent. But these are long songs that kind of feel like they don't go anywhere. I get the same feeling listening to jam band music.

the stage. I really quite enjoyed it. It helped that half a bottle of red had been sunk before Miles got to blow his stuff. But then that's Jazz, YEAH? Abide With Me reduced me to tears.

I know there's so much talent here, and this album has some shining moments. Great transitions, and when it grooves, it grooves. That said, jazz is not my jam.

I liked this more than I thought I would. It's not typical jazz, it's funkier and more free flowing with its instruments than the other jazz albums I've heard

Not what I expceted from my limited knowledge of Davis' work. Only 2 lengthy songs. Chill and ethereal, was a solid listen, but also didn't have much that really grabbed me.

I blinked and it was over. Rather low key for Miles.

The birth of Fusion.

shh/peaceful - love the pacing hihat drums, feels indubitably modern (trancelike quality you get in electronic music) - piano is so dreamlike in the background, tinkling in and out - while the saxophone is - john mclaughlin is a badass, so subtle but defo my fav - trumpet peaks and then drops in at like 6mins creating a brief vacuum which feels like you have lost your guide and fallen into a dreamy abyss. When it comes back it is so much gentler. i feel like i am in a garden of plutonian delights. - the break at 13:30 reverts you back to earth. trumpet becomes hazy and wistful, nostalgic for the distant adventure. weirdly didactic quality (complete reinforcement bias) - imagine telling children but enriching with lessons - i particularly like the little piano falls and climbs that give accents of danger or mystery - not sure i like the ending. just fades out rather suddenly. i would have preferred if all the instruments are faded out of the mix one at a time until it is just the drums in a silent way - love the guitar tone (reminds me of dear prudence) - the reverberation reminds me of gentle raindrops on a lake but the quality of the trumpet is like a tiny rowboat cutting through the water - WTF! 4.18 massive change in atmosphere, hints of excitement but then it slowly reverts back into calmness - around 10 mins: dancy in the most ideal laid back sense, head bobbing, finger twitching stuff - drums get involved more and start to spice things up a little around 13 - 15.30 bass is sexxx - and then drops out suddenly back to the dreamlike start - trumpet at end is my fav part

I’m no jazz scholar, but I know that Miles is one of the all-time best in the biz. I listened to this album at 5am while having a listless soak in the tub. Seemed fitting. The tracks are two very different sides of the same coin. Harmonious in the way they complement each other, but distinctly separate by the starkly contrasting moods each invokes while listening. I preferred the first more triumphant track to the dour second one, but overall good listening experience as a whole.

A chill soundscape that apparently pioneered the genre of Jazz fusion. Not much music or material there to really hang your "this is genius" hat on, in my opinion, but I can appreciate that this represents a milestone in modern jazz.

Original but not bad!

The drummer riding the hihat must have been tired after Shh/Peaceful. Proto ambient fusion suitable for moments of contemplation. When it comes to two trackers by Miles I prefer a Tribute to Jack Johnson, but you can’t really rate an album like this.

This was a huge shift for Miles. While I'm not crazy about where it ended up, I can appreciate this as the transition. McLaughlin and Zawinul are fantastic on it.

Put it on while working and was just something that zipped by...may have to revisit this one...but for now a 3.5.

And there was me thinking that Coltrane album was wild for only having 4 tracks on it. I like the very soundscape-y feel this has, especially track 2. Sometimes dreamy, often slightly mysterious, but never threatening. Pixar-esque.

Strong jazz music that isn't too out there for me.

Very cruisy very smooth very relaxing. If you're rating is based on the number of tracks you like then this is a fiver but for me it's how much I want to listen to it again or if I want to explore it further. As much as I liked this it's not being added to a playlist.

Not a fan of Jazz, but this was a lot less offensive than I expected it to be. Wikipedia says it is a fusion record that ticked off some Jazz aficionados - good to hear. Certainly not a go to record, but better than the one or two stars I anticipated prior to listening. 2.5 and rounding up!

Not my favourite Jazz pieces, I preferred in a silent way to the first track. It doesn’t really have that flow to the stages in the music, it kinda sounds like you just cut up three separate songs and spliced them together

Standard Miles here I think a good album with just 2 extended tracks meandering around their improvisations. Good Jazz but not sure I would have it in my top 1001! I suppose it is about time context but not one of my favourites on the list

Best Song: Shhh. These rules make less sense for an album like this, but the early portion of the album sounds almost alien and ethereal in its use of these technical blips and bloops. Worst Song: None. Overall: Definitely different from the Miles Davis I've listened to previously. The electric elements and rock fusion style definitely make it more easily listenable, but it also doesn't feel like it hits the same heights as Kind of Blue.

Great background music to drink a scotch to on a lazy Sunday afternoon. But, I"m not gonna play this on my way to work.

I flow three ways on Sunday and when the sun is shining I can't seem to find the phone or dial the right number. Then things shift and they continue moving in that direction, buzzing and clacking and who knows what else. For the twelfth time the underside is revealed and special things fall out. Better that way than if you payed attention. But for some, this is the way of the world. Improvisation! Play without thinking. Write without thinking. Live without thinking! But I have no artistic talent, so writing or playing without thinking just results in mush. Not so with Miles.

Reckon this would have gone down a treat in the background when I was at uni getting stoned. Still pleasant, though the high hat 16s are irritating after a while. Miles' tone is always lovely.

Van has never referenced Miles Davies as an influence (they were more contemporaries anyway) but the similarities between the opening of 'in a silent way' and Van's 'haunts of ancient peace' are marked. I'm not accusing Van of plagiarism by any means as Van was able to build upon this beautiful ambient sound and craft one of his greatest recordings whereas Miles' jazzy leanings in the middle of his song are less interesting to me.

Jazz isn't my thing, but I do love the sound Miles got from his horn. Side one belongs to that omnipresent fizzing from the hi-hat and some of the coolest bass I've ever heard. I heard someone use the word "ambient" to describe the album. It is something you'd put on late at night while peacefully discussing with a couple of friends.

Enjoyable to a point, but the majority album made me feel very stressed, as though I was on the verge of a panic attack and that feeling felt like an eternity before letting up in the last few minutes. It evoked a journey in my mind but not one I'm interested in revisiting.

It all sounds very similar. It was very easy listening while eating dinner and would make a nice environment if people were over. Wish I could give it a 3.5/5

After listening to four of his albums, I think I've learned that Miles Davis is the king of cracking a note and then cracking it again when the phrase is repeated so it sounds like the first one was on purpose. If my songs were 20 minutes long, I wouldn't want to do extra takes, either. Best track: Shhh / Peaceful

You're led to believe that Miles Davis is a genius, the primal exponent of a musical form and the template for a generation of artists to follow. But I must be missing something, as this felt like the B-side of the soundtrack to a forgettable Steve McQueen film. 38 minutes felt like much longer, and not in a good way.

29. In a Silent Way - Miles Davis 2 tracks, (but 18 & 19 mins each). This is exactly why I'm doing @1001_albums_gen . Just Miles, his trumpet & some backing snare drum & keyboard. Really unusual/interesting & not something I would normally listen to at all. The use of the snare drum is brilliant and forms the basis for everything else to come and go as it pleases. It has a sort of hypnotic quality. 3/5

What more can you ask for

I generally am not a fan of jazz albums. I feel like I don't have the necessary expertise to fully enjoy them, and as a result, I don't like the music. However, this one is an exception. I enjoyed it as it was lively when it needed to be and soothing when it wanted to be. My only gripe is that each song is just a bit long. Favorite track: In a Silent Way

This was a really interesting listen. I wasn't sure what to expect, and it's probably good I didn't have solid expectations because this album is all over the place. I liked it. I’m giving it 3 stars instead of 4 because I didn’t love all of it but I’d definitely listen to more Miles Davis in the future.

Maybe it's because I listened to it while studying and I've been listening to a lot of instrumentals, but it didn't really click for me

Miles Davis is a name you’ve heard many times before but have not necessarily listened to his music. Like me, you probably knew he played a saxophone...or was it a trumpet? And that he is also a jazz musician. I must admit I did not know anymore than this before listening to this album. My mind was even more curious after discovering there are only two tracks listed on the lp. I can say this though...without coming anywhere remotely close to being an aficionado of jazz or classic instrumental music, I certainly can appreciate the ability and dedication needed to play an instrument at such a level even an outsider and self confessed non-lover of the genre finds it more than enjoyable and even moving in an emotional sense. Do yourself a favour...if you haven’t already. 3 Stars

A true classic, I actually discovered this album through Bill Laswell's "Panthalassa" reworks. Then I went straight to the source. It brings back some memories of good old days.

First impressions: A lot more organ and guitar than I've ever heard in a jazz album. Seemingly the beginnings of jazz "fusion". Not my favorite Miles Davis. His trumpet sounds harsher and can be downright annoying at times. Never felt this way in Kind of Blue.

First time I’ve actually listened to Miles Davis even though I’ve heard his name referenced for so long on the Simpson’s!

Intricate blend of bluesy piano, saxophone, and guitar create a wonderfully jazzy soundscape however music and sound a little frustrating at times.

Surprised when the album ended after two songs. Nice to listen to while working but wouldn't choose this over others.

I didn't like this album as much as kind of blue. Miles Davis is still one of the best when it comes to trumpet and cool jazz.

Well jazz is definitely not my thing. I have no idea where to start even comprehending what I heard. I mean, it probably is technically pure genius and all that other jazz (LOL), but I'm just too incompetent to understand it.

In places, this reminds me of those mindfulness CDs with whale noises that you used to be able to buy in National Trust gift shops. The musicianship is top notch, but it really is just background noise you'd put on to relax at the end of a stressful day. Nothing wrong with that.

I’m not the biggest jazz fan and that’s okay.

(I somehow lost the notes that I'd made prior to listening to the album - but I complimented the album cover! it had really sparked my curiosity! I was keen to listen!) but yeah, I think after listening to the album I'll only keep liking the cover. So so so good! I wish I liked the music more - and don't get me wrong, I've always been drawn to Miles based on his genre and his legacy / reputation, but these 2 tracks were putting me to sleep on my Friday afternoon ride from Bratislava to Žilina (and the traffic jam which made it 30-40 minutes longer certainly didn't help). So, not a perfect setting - and Phoebe Bridgers put out an album which is really tough to follow. But I sat through it. I can appreciate the musicianship, I can appreciate the innovative things he's doing here with new instruments brought into the jazz sphere, but it's just still not for me, I'm afraid. Improvisational jazz is never going to be something I want to sit and listen to. Does this album deserve more than 2 stars? You bet. But is it more than 2 stars for me? No. I will never sit and listen to it. ⭐️⭐️

Big Sim City vibes, but more chaotic, especially the harpsichord player who is very disconnected from the other instruments and seems to be off in their own world, playing their own song most of the time. Not my style for active listening, but good enough background music for a lounge type vibe.

Of course it's good - it's Miles Davis. But the whole time I'm listening I just wish I was listening to Bitches Brew instead - it's so similar but not quite as hard-edged. So I don't know if I would ever go out of my way to listen to this.

I really didn't think this was that good. Miles Davis is a legend and there is other material of his that I like. This I found to be a slog, mainly because of the repetitiveness of the two tracks. This was just devoid of anything interesting or truly risky. 2 stars.

I didn't really enjoy In a Silent Way. The long tracks, heavy emphasis on improvisation, and lack of clear direction just didn't click with me. I can appreciate what Miles Davis was trying to achieve, and listening to this album made me want to explore more of his work. That led me to Kind of Blue, which I found far more engaging and much easier to connect with. I'm not much of a jazz enthusiast, so that certainly influenced my experience. While this album gave me a greater appreciation for Miles Davis as an artist and his impact on music, the album itself simply didn't resonate with me.

I'll be the first to admit I don't really know anything about Jazz. But I had listened to and enjoyed certain stuff, but this album didn't really make me feel anything. It never really seemed to get going, and as soon as I thought it was going too it changed back. Nothing bad, but nothing really memorable. 2.5* rounded to 2*

Not sure I have the taste level required to appreciate something like this. Felt like I was in the lobby bar of a very swish hotel from decades ago. Not entirely sure how it sets itself above anything else in this same genre. It wasn’t bad but it didn’t feel spectacular in any way. This may require a little more deep diving.

Interesting to listen to. Am I ever going to listen to it again? Nope. I just feel like this whole genre is set up to waste good talent under the pretence of 'improvisation'. Just feels like it could be better if they tried harder. I don't know what I'm talking about though.

What an album to sleep to holy moly

I really don't want to be someone who just rules albums out by genre immediately so I swear I try to listen to everything with an open mind. But jazz continues to be outside of my understanding. I enjoyed the first song for a little while from about 6 minutes in and I liked the first and last four minutes of the second song. But both are 20 minute long songs with big sections of what sounds to me to be unstructured freestyle saxophone that drove me a little mad so I'll probably never listen to the bits I did like again. Favourite song: In a Silent Way Least: Shhh / Peaceful

Liked the trumpet parts and it surely is intriguing music if you like jazz. But apparently it was recorded on one day and I think to hear that fact.

Monotonous, i would have love some trumpet melody improvisation along all track.

i had a good time listening but like 10 minutes after the fact i couldn't recall a single individual moment from the entire record. if i got strapped to a clockwork orange machine and forced to just listen and not think about anything else as i stared through unblinking eyes at a bass visualizer for about 40 minutes, i would probably walk away thinking "this is good and cool and important" but as it is im just not that guy. my favorite song was technically It's About That Time

First half is pretty cool, consisting of jazz that scratches my brain and keeps me involved. The second half shuts down my brain's processes, lulling me into a shallow musical coma. Time slows, the tempo is unabating, the trumpet keeps on barking, and I keep searching for the brew (unsuccessfully). Enough about me, I want to see what the jazz enthusiast has to say about this one 4.6/10

no issues with this really, just not for me

I like a bit of Miles, and this was pushing boundaries - lots of electric guitar, electric piano and drums that borrow a little from the rock world. Unfortunately the pieces sound like improvised noodling with little musical structure to my untrained ears, "like a goat shitting into a tin bucket" as an old lady once said in response to hearing experimental jazz. I wouldn't listen to this actively again, but it's pleasant background listening.

I appreciate that Miles Davis is regarded as a genius, but Jazz is about the only genre I can’t ever relate to.

Unlike most jazz this actually had a few redeeming qualities, mainly a tight band that could probably do some cool stuff in other contexts. Still no actualy songs, though; just noodling, which has interesting bits intermittently.

I can really see what this album is going for, and I can understand the appeal of jazz. However, it really isn't for me. The musicians are all very talented, but it just meanders and wanders about for 40 minutes without ever feeling like it's going anywhere.

Yeah this is really not my vibe at all. I appreciate the talent needed to make this music, but no thanks. Never liked trombones much.

Clearly this isn't for me

This is the type of jazz that turns the average listener away from this genre. Unfortunately, this is not the album a beginner wants to listen to.

I can appreciate how Miles Davis is different to Hugh Masekla or Duke Ellington. I can appreciate how THIS Miles Davis album is very different to 'A Kind of Blue' or 'Collector's Items'. But the issue for me is that, even though I can differentiate between these different styles and types, none of the different types stands out to me as better or more unique than another. I enjoyed the dreamy intro to 'In a Silent Way' and I enjoyed the tippy tapping of the drums in 'Shhh / Peaceful'. But I can't seem to find what makes jazz enthusiasts love the genre so much. 38 minutes squished into two songs. Okay jazz, I've heard better. I liked the start of ‘In a silent way’, and I wished it was its own song that I could listen to, but then it transitions to jazz again, I like the ending as well

I didn’t like this album

It mostly just felt like noodling for 40 minutes. There were a few moments of brilliance but a lot of it was over my head. It wasn't unpleasant but it didn't blow me away.

Johnny hates jazz. I don't like it much either, but I appreciated the underlying repetitive nature of this and not the improv jazz that just goes off on one with no rhythm. Early jazz trance music? If you squint a lot maybe.

I didn't really know I was supposed to feel or take away from this. It was happening, then it wasn't. I think the structure-less meandering doesn't really chime with me unfortunately. It felt like the different instruments were just playing whatever they felt like. I see this was the studio album before Bitches Brew which I didn't really like either, much prefer Kind of Blue and Round About Midnight from him

Empezó interesantísimo Me pasa parecido que con Stevie y su álbum. Son claramente muy talentosos, pero no me gusta casi el Jazz :( , o más que no me guste es que me aburre o no le encuentro el alma. Quizá porque disfruto mucho la percusión más dramática y lo teatral y eso no lo encuentro ahí. Es como música de fondo en un almuerzo. No tengo fundamentos técnicos para desmeritarlo, pero no es mi estilo. Al min 9:00 empieza a sonar algo interesante que me recordó como a champeta. nadie canta. I was enjoying the journey and then fell asleep (in a relaxed way not a bored way)

Slightly different than I was expecting, I thought it was going to be pure blues/soul jazz but it’s quite mystical, and kind of tells a story. The music may be from some film or tv program I’ve watched, I’m thinking of Louis Theroux documentary for some reason.

1/3. I just can’t get into this kind of jazz. Little to no dynamics, the same brush drums in the back the entire time, it just sounds like meandering to me. The inclusion of the Hammond is cool I guess, but not in the way they play it here. Just a bore.

10:30 in på B-sidan vaknar basen till liv och det händer något, ett groove. Det varar i knappt fem minuter och är det enda riktigt pigga ögonblicket på den här skivan. A-sidans Shhh/ Peaceful har i och för sig ett snyggt hihatbeat, men det blir aldrig mer än ett 19 minuter långt intro som aldrig kommer igång. Har man hört Bitches brew finns ingen direkt anledning att lyssna på denna sömniga förövning.

OK, nothing too great.

Sonically this was a stellar listen, but with a lot of instrumental records the replayability just isn’t there for me.

I can't really handle how discordant the keys are through this album. I can't feel its rhythm and it feels like it's adding friction for the hell of it -- never do I feel any resolution with its presence. The album would be better off without it.

I’m not a jazz fan so I only listened to the first three songs. I will say, if I were a jazz fan, this would be five stars. Given my somewhat dislike for jazz though, I cannot give it that rating.

I'm not really a jazz fan, so this doesn't exactly get tremendously high marks from me. However, I will say that I truly do appreciate the talent it takes to play like this. I have band experience, and, as someone who has heard bad horns and good horns, this was good. It just isn't for me, unfortunately. If you like jazz, however, you will LOVE this!

Too much jazz noodling for me.
