Reviews (page 12 of 14)
Very boring to me.
Meh
This feels like an album steeped in folk traditions, with nods to the rustic folk of the 60s and 70s as well as chamber folk. While its influences are clear, it never rises above them. It's often very pretty, especially when it leans on vocal harmonies. I like the "tell me anything you want, any old lie will do" part on "Ragged Wood," but the lyrics are usually not all that striking. The songs can be a bit busy - I'd rather they focus on one guitar line than have all these backing elements. "Blue Ridge Mountains" stands out as a song that evolves and really opens up, but many of the others just settle into one zone. This one got a lot of hype upon release and it's hard for me to tell why. It's a comfy retreat to classic folk sounds, but artists like Joanna Newson and Sufjan Stevens were doing much more interesting things in the genre around this time.
i cant even remember what this album looked like let alone sounded like / 5
Listenable
This probably goes so hard if you run away to live in a forest
Dull af
Just okay
Decent folk, but kinda bland.
See why its so popular, but honestly sounds like the most bland, mainstream appealing form of music to me, without any rough edges. Was looking forward to finally having some indie in here, but was sadly disappointed.
Some good sounds but it really doesn't speak to me.
Bucolic, pleasant in places, but didn’t really interest me. Quite bland.
Good harmonies and in places a good sound, but the singing was a bit like chanting that, for me, got a annoying/boring. The music wasn't unpleasant.
American folk? I was expecting CCR meets Poco but got this bland drivel, it very quickly became background noise. It had no real saving graces.
This sounds like the time hipsters, pale ale, moustaches on fingers and pulled pork were in. It's not awful, it's well produced, but it's so far removed from my tastes that it just sounds like boring music from what I remember being a terrible time.
Two duds in a row
Is this considered stomp clap hey music? Not sure. This was very popular in the early oughts indie circles when other indie folks artists broke out big like Bon Iver and Wilco. I probably haven’t listened to this in over a decade so let’s try. It’s fine. Good vocals and cute production. A bit forgettable throughout but fine. Two stars I guess.
Listens: 3 Standout Tracks: ? Compared to some of the stuff I've had on the List, this album has, on paper, good listen counts. I know those can be juked, but I tend to take it at face value if we're not talking top ten most popular artists in the world. My point being, people seem to like this. It clearly has wider appeal than, for example, Fugazi's Repeater, who I just listened to a few albums ago. It's also not Beatles material either, but for an album from 2008, it has 7 songs with over a million listens. I do not care much for this album. I don't hate it, but on just about every song, where I think something interesting is going to happen, or when I hope the song is going to go in a particular direction, it doesn't, and I'm left disappointed/deflated and wanting more. Most of the songs are short, so by the time you start to get a "lift-off" moment, the song is just about over. It's just not captivating to me.
This was pleasant enough, but I don't see going out of my way to listening to it again.
It got off to a rough start as I really disliked the first song "Sun It Rises". Then, I kind of loved "White Winter Hymnal". Eventually, it all started to sound very samey, and I lost interest. Not terrible, but nothing I'd ever return to... except "Hymnal".
Well-produced, but, well, boring. 🥱 4/10 Acceptable
It has shades of mountain folk music but it seems like the people who made it are cosplaying mountain folk? That's kinda lame.
What happens when people who own live, laugh, love artwork decide they want to listen to interesting music. This must be what purgatory is like
I zoned out for most of this.
Not my cup of tea.
White winter hymnal always makes me think of when pretty in plaid (an all girls a cappella group at alma, Sam) did it at a Christmas concert. Specifically, Grace Sutherland. I wonder what she’s up to. Probably a wonderful mother to three strapping young dairy farmer boys. Anyway, I really don’t like indie at all
This is commercial folk. It's pretty, with lovely harmonies, but there is little substance in the instrumentation and each note is too perfectly placed. It's wannabe pastoral, the anthem of every millionaire family that opens a gentleman farm to connect with nature. It's inoffensive, and if you like it, that's fine, but not for me
Proper twee girls stuff but in the worst way.
Feels like the whole Girls soundtrack basically. A bit too wishy-washy for my taste.
I did not think it was very interesting.
Music for a funeral
Way emo kinda boring.
not really my style. it sounds very likable: clear lyrics, basic instruments and relatable themes. but nothing strikes me. i enjoyed it but it’s just “any” album
Liked the acoustic well enough but the vocals in this wore on me pretty quickly.
Bored by them then, bored by them now. White Winter Hymnal is an aberration though. In love with that one.
Has a certain bland quality
2 out of 5 I was going to give it 1 star only because this genre is not for me. Too slow and emotional. But then a few songs sounded pretty good and reminded me of Hozier.
This was an interesting listen. I REALLY enjoy the reverb and effects on the vocals, felt very Genesis or Yes like. The first half kept my attention, then the second half put me to sleep. Wow was that repetitive. Album art alone gives it an extra half star.
Not my Jam!!!
Most albums, after the first song you've got a pretty good idea where they're going with the music on that album. Fleet Foxes here offer no surprises. Not that surprises are necessary or desired, but... I got bored. I had missed this album when it came out in the oughts, but now that I know, can't say I missed much.
So this is a weird album for me. When I listen to it it reminds me enough of My Morning Jackets It Still Moves album that I think I enjoy Fleet Foxes. They both have the vocal ranges and recording method for vocals. I do enjoy My Morning Jacket. I don't enjoy Fleet Foxes. I think I want to but it's just not there for me. My wife said it's a good album for a rainy day where you don't do anything more than read and maybe the dishes.
this style of music is to folk what metal is to punk. it sounds kind of similar but it’s a bit baseless and the lyrics are nonsense. it’s fine but it lacks substance
Pleasant, but like a lot of music from this era, absolutely unexciting. I’m old enough that most music from this era either passed me by or I may only be vaguely aware of. In this case I’ve heard the name of the band, but never knowingly listened to any of their music. And, well, meh. I didn’t even think about a second listen this morning.
Folks old country to me.
cleeres sans la magie
Middle of the road softness for the elderly
Sounded like every other folk album. Harmonys mixed with boring guitar. Nothing unique.
Not my thing
I didn't like it when it came out. I still don't like it.
Nice background music for woodworking or if you’re a soft handed beard grooming, cobbler shoe hipster.
cute
Started off interesting 3 stars but was zoned out of it by the end.
So bissi Country Gejaule irgendwie Idk xD
a person can listen to this, I guess.
This one really made an impact on me when it came out, but I suppose at any given time there’s some sort of Folk Revival going on, sweeping up young men who are convincing themselves they are getting old. At times I like the way this is produced. It’s got its moments throughout. Mostly just a relic though.
For some reason, I've always confused this band with The War On Drugs, even though musically they have virtually no connection. Probably because I just find both bands boring. Here's their self-titled debut album, which journalists raved about — and there you have it, an 87 on Metacritic is no joke. It's less than forty minutes long, but those forty minutes felt like over an hour to me. Perhaps it's because all the songs follow the same pattern — acoustic guitar, bass drum, and drawn-out, church-like chants. The cover art also conveys this mood; listening to it makes you feel like a lumberjack living in the 16th century. Mumford & Sons, if they were dull, basically. It's probably a decent release, just not my thing.
meh
meh
It sounded kinda nice/okay
Profoundly bland. 2008 is too recent so sounds dated.
Wet behind the ears. Not unpleasant.
Okay music Not my preferred style Reminds me of ‘send me on my way’ and mumford and sons
Good to listen to while walking, bog all else to tbh. People describing this as folk. Laughable. Utter drivel from some people
This album was pseudo relaxing but I can't place where and when I would listen to it? I can see myself changing the radio station with most of this album but i dodnt hate it. Two stars.
Was lookingforward to this but boring as shit
Not really that intestino to my, I was expectore something different since it said it was the best debut album from any band, but I think it gave me the wrong idea sounding enjoy that much.
Classic Coldplay.
This basically passed me by when it came out and probably for good reasons. It's deathly boring save for a couple track, it feels sloppy in an attempt to be "earthy". A revival of folk that was better as it was.
I liked the indie folk scene this helped blossom. I’ve heard this many times but I was as a little bored on this listen.
So this is Fleet Foxes ... well its better than Grizzly Bear.
I am well aware of this dorky band. Very much not my thing. Fuck off with your folk hymns. I acknowledge that it's well made for what it is I guess.
Their chamber folk stylings were a great counter to the “stomp-clap” indie folk of the late 2000s. That said, gosh, I’ve never found this to be that good either hahah.
This album is what I imagine plays in a white woman's head as they shop for artisanal good at a farmer's market.
Some good songs but can be a bit slow
I suppose this would be nice for someone, but way too mellow for this cat. I will say they are good musicians, just not my thing
boring
weak 2.5
This is very mediocre music. It feels like I've heard it a million times before. The sound is very ordinary, and there's nothing special about the lyrics, music, or vocals.
Really did not vibe with this record. None of the tracks really stood out to me. It also feels like a less gritty and less rock-infused Band of Horses record.
I really expected to love this but I found myself a bit bored. It has a lot of the stuff I like in a folksy album, but it just didn’t reel me in all the way. A few too many of the same ingredients, I think.
Felt like it started off good but really lost interest after a song or two.
This sounds like the music that I'm sure my girlfriend would really enjoy, but for me, not at all. This sound really dominated the early 2010s as easy listening to folk music, and for that reason, I'm tired of this genre of music. I'm sure this album deserves to be on the list as a staple of this genre. Definitely shooting it over to her, though.
not feeling that indie vibe today i guess
Sen He doesn't know why Är Ju också bra. PS. Tack för ett underbart jubileum!
Very quiet fancy melodic folk pop album.
It was just okay
Respect the harmonies, solid musicians, but this is bland.
Sonically, I suppose this is a well made album. However, it doesn’t do anything for me. Except maybe bore me. It’s almost too dense for folk music; there’s just not enough space. Also, it all sounds the same. I had heard someone else make this complaint about Fleet Foxes before, and the response was that’s because if bands have a sound, their songs will sound the same. But there should still be some diversity between songs. If I were to walk out of the room with this album playing, I would be hard pressed to guess if what was playing when I came back in was the same song or a different one. Any good band should be able to have a distinct sound but still create songs that are easily differentiated. Led Zeppelin did that, the Beatles did that. Primus, White Stripes, and on and on. But these are all the same. Now, it was an appropriate soundtrack for my dark drive into the city on this traffic-less New Year’s Eve morning, but that doesn’t mean that I really enjoyed it.
A lot of the user reviews for this album are either saying this is perfect for them or there is not much to say other than awesome cover art. That about sums it up for me as well. This is a nothing burger. Well produced but everything is just middle of the road tempos, fake-folky vocals and it all sounds the same. No sharp edges to be seen sonically. It’s fine for short bursts in a commercial or in a movie soundtrack but that’s about it. No reason to ever listen to this again. But great album art! /s
Better than Coldplay
very interesting… kinda granola but kinda in a good way! has amazing moments but overall not my thing/ wouldn’t reach for it
not my type of sound
I have been sniffy about fleet foxes in the past and had to open my mind to get through this album , unfortunately my view on this band is still unchanged and I don’t like it
Meh
2,3/5
Fleet Foxes sounds sort of floaty and transcendent bringing a pretty unique sound. Personally I find this style of music boring. It’s great if you don’t really want to notice it playing in the background.
Good to start with, but as it went on it sounded more and more like the beach boys. This is not my cup of tea.
i can’t deny that it’s good, but this really isn’t my style of music at all. there’s some songs i like quite a lot, but it just still isn’t a sound i connect with much. it goes for a very “natural” and acoustic sound, and i think i’d like it a lot more if it wasn’t so clean and almost overproduced. final thoughts; it sounds like cishet ethel cain
An entry in the brief but massive "stomp clap" genre. From this distance, they tend to blur together. It's fine, but not notable.
2 out of 5. Pretty album art, and one or two songs here were nice to listen to.
The worst of that wave of mid 2000s folk revival we had to endure. Just feels incredibly phoned in and without any real heart at all. I’m glad Father John Misty jumped this ship when he did.
Little bit boring.. 3/5 max eher 2/5
Found out after listening to half this album that this is the indie/folk band who did "Mykanos" - This (earlier) album sounded a bit "echoey", and less melodic/more "whiney" than I had hoped given how much I like the sound of Mykanos. Yeah I could throw a song or two from this album into a broader playlist (such as "Your Protector") but those echoey backing vocals are something I would struggle with for a repeat listening of the full album.
I was part of the maddening crowd that bought this album when it first came out based on the song White Winter Hymnal. When I heard the entire album I slipped it back into its cover and never listened to it again. It’s difficult to identify individual songs because I’m never quite sure when one song ends and the next one begins. A calculated soulless affair.
not bad but certainly not for me. unfortunately a running theme with this website for me so far— i think i just have terrible luck rn
Well, this was a little depressing. I recognised the second song, but I don't know where it's from. I also was expecting a different sort of sound because I got this band confused with the singer Foxes
Not interesting enough to bring me to hate it. I read a review saying this was music for suburbanites who wish they were country folk and I can't disagree.
This was a big deal when it came out, and I remember many of my co-workers championing it. (We ranked it #12 on our year-end list.) It wasn't my thing then, and that hasn't changed. It's perfectly pleasant and impressively accomplished for a debut (especially one written by someone who was barely in their 20s), but this style of music just doesn't grab me.
I appreciate how finely crafted and constructed this is. But it’s like using margarine vs butter. - the ingredients mixed to be healthy but ending up pretty bland.
A mix of 70s rock, sort of like a country or folky version of Jethro Tull, but not nearly as good--and no flute but guitar. Same sort of vibe, though, would work on a Jethro Tull / 70's folk rock playlist.
4/10 It seems that I revert to an overuse of the word ‘nice’ when I land on music that is reasonably pleasant, fairly well executed but ultimately fairly unengaging to me as a listener. And this is another of those ‘nice’ albums. As an experience, it was inoffensive but fairly bland. There was nothing that really hooked me in or grabbed hold of me and it just passed me by in a wash of niceness and reverb. And boy do they massively overuse reverb. Not only that, but the reverb itself is really artificial sounding, because it sounds like a massive space, but with no tail, like no real space could ever offer. Very odd. When this album first washed over me, I enjoyed it more than on a focused listen, when the repetition and lack of inventiveness became more exposed. In a funny way, they kind of sound like an indie band cosplaying as a folk band, rather than being an actual folk band, and the result is a kind of like wallpaper music, but the wallpaper is an expensive designer print that has been appropriated from some traditional origin. It doesn’t surprise me in the slightest that this album came out just a few years after Brian Wilson’s Smile, as this feels like it’s taken a lot of inspiration from some of the work on that album, but without the same songwriting ability, range or edge of insanity that carried that project. There’s just no sense of adventure to this at all. Not that it’s really bad, it’s just not very interesting either, and I don’t feel like they’ve actually got anything to say. The aesthetic is nice enough, if I’m in the mood for something like this, there are many albums of greater substance and quality that I’d jump to ahead of this. Sun It Rises - Talk about setting your stall out early, twee campfire vocal harmonies with lyrics about woodland life that give way to folksy acoustic guitar twiddles. It’s fairly pleasant, but so soaked in reverb that things are getting kind of washed in together, and then it sort of tails away. White Winter Hymnal - This has got some nice harmonies, but there’s not much to it really. It’s not bad, but I think it’s made to sound bigger than it is by the mixing, and there’s not much under the surface apart from a sheen of pleasantness. Ragged Wood - This is better. There’s a bit of pace to it and the instrumentation has a bit more depth to it. There’s some good dynamic range and the nice vocal harmonies persist. There’s quite a jarring change in the middle, which is a bit odd and then it builds up nicely again from there, but never gets back to anything that interesting. Tiger Mountain Peasant Song - This is another ‘nice enough’ song. Too much reverb again, especially for a ‘bloke with a guitar’ track. It loses all levels of intimacy that a track like this should have. Underneath it, the track is fairly pleasant. Quiet Houses - This is very repetitive. I’m not sure what they’re trying to get at with this one at all. Some of the ideas are ok, but they are dragged out to the nth degree. He Doesn't Know Why - I don’t know why either, to be fair. It’s kind of meandering and all gets lost in the cacophony of reverb and instrumentation. The rhythms are very stilted and the melody just wanders around. Then it ends with some unrelated piano playing that I don’t know the purpose of other than to somehow say “look, we really play these instruments”. Heard Them Stirring - More ‘nice’ music that doesn’t really do anything apart from exist. I’ve really nothing more to add, and apparently, neither did they. Your Protector - This one builds quite well to begin with, but then sort of plateaus. It’s got a bit of toe-tapping rhythm to it, but it’s still fairly bland and unengaging. Meadowlarks - This is quite a nice song that loses itself in the swamp of reverb. The verses to meander around a little, but when it thickens up it’s very pretty, although again, so much reverb. Blue Ridge Mountains - There’s a nice bit of melody to this and while it gets thicker in sound, it never lands on a satisfying denouement. And that hammered single note piano line is really bad. Oliver James - This one seems pretty nice again. It’s got a pleasant chorus, but there’s not a great level of development, except for wandering around the core thread of the song again, and then it just drifts away into an overly reveberant acapella vocal.
⭐️⭐️ 1001 ALBUMS- # 97 Fleet Hipsters…🧔♂️🎹🪕 The quintessential sound of ‘oughts indie rock. As I was listening to this vehemently overrated album, I found myself tuning out completely about 3 songs in and when I regained conscious awareness I swear I thought I had been listening to Band of Horses (or one of about a hundred similar indie folk groups of the era). 😴 The album rubbed me the wrong way almost immediately; is that a poor man’s Beach Boys harmony I heard to kickstart this soulless journey? Sure the music here is pleasant enough, cohesive and tranquil with soothing melodies, however the charm wears off quickly as the aesthetic of the complete sound falls flat. Lacking unique character, these guys just play it way too safe for my deeper enjoyment. 🎧 Classic Track: White Winter Hymnal 🎧 Deep Cut Gem: Ragged Wood 🚫 Skip Track: Sun It Rises Produced by Phil Ek, the album’s sonic palette is warm, organic, and analog-rich. Instruments — acoustic guitar, mandolin, drums, organ — blend into harmonies that often serve as the album’s emotional core. There’s a sense of physical space in the recordings: you can almost hear the wood of the instruments and the air in the room. Lyrically, the album explores memory, belonging, faith, and the natural world. Pecknold writes in fragments — rather than telling stories directly, he evokes moods and landscapes. The recurring imagery of mountains, rivers, and forests serves as metaphor for human feeling: the way love erodes, faith wanes, and time reshapes us all. 🖼️ Album Artwork: Much more artistic than the music This self-titled debut arrived at a moment when indie music was turning inward — away from the jagged post-punk revival and toward something more organic, pastoral, and reflective. It was instantly hailed as a masterpiece, overblown acclaim with record’s blend of luminous harmonies, spiritual imagery, and rustic textures. Yet beneath the glow of its beauty lies a quieter tension: between sincerity and idealization, between authenticity and artifice. This is where a truly critical reading finds depth — and limitation. The album’s unified sound — is its limitation. The songs blend together as the band rarely risks dissonance or confrontation; everything feels harmonically safe, emotionally controlled….dull in its delivery.
New one for me! Lets go. Sparse yet grand. It was OK but not likely to listen to again.
Didn’t really care for this at all. It’s probably closer to a 1.5 than a 2. I can’t justify giving it a 1 because it was good musicianship, I just didn’t like it. Music seemed like a mix of Mumford and sons type music with far cry 5 weird Christian cult style music. Not for me
This album was everywhere when it came out. Now a decade plus later it feels very twee and cute.
Just the same stuff I've already listened to
This was weird for me because I like a lot of stuff similar/adjacent to this, but this just didn't really grab me. "White Winter Hymnal" I had heard before and is great though.
Background not much of anything
I really want to like them... Almost like Bards of the middle ages. I just can't.
Kinda boring
Didn’t jump on the “stomp clap hey” bandwagon when it was popular because I thought it sucked. I still think it sucks.
Background music for the world’s most meh coffee house. A track will inevitably be used for some millennial Big Chill type soundtrack and we’ll have to convince our children that our taste really wasn’t that bad.
There was a lot of hype about this band back in 2008 but I always thought they were a bit overrated. Not that keen on the singing so I still struggle. I do like their acoustic based sound but it's not particularly interesting.
Wobbly voices and acoustic guitairs. Wasn't sure why this was folk music besides the fact he kept talking about fires. I'd say it was a folk asethetic driven indie pop, but that makes me sound like a twat. However did made me wonder what is contemporary folk, should we be singing songs about gimps, farmer shoot outs, bubble T and A level results?
I hadn't heard this before and was quite interested to listen... and I got bored, very bored indeed!
Dangerously close to country, but it doesn't cross the line. It's... fine.
Music with no redeeming features. Didn't grab me.
oh golly-gosh ... how to go from "Hawkwind - Space Ritual" to "Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes" it's hard to evaluate this when the mood of the album just does not jive right now. I think Helplessness Blues would have been a better choice for 1001 albums; maybe it's in there too ? So whilst it's hard to score this right now, i'll award 2.5 stars ... downgraded to 2 as no half-stars permitted
How high was the critic who claimed this was one of thr greatest debuts of all time. Or was this a critic who has listened to F-all music. Its not to say the album is bad. Its alright, nothing special. But it came our in 2008 and sounds very much like albums that came out decades before. It doesn't break new ground, its just the same old indie folk. A couple catchy tunes but most was not my cup of Tea. Others have done it better.
Another one of those indie bands I wondered why I “never got into” until I had to listen to this album… really boring. Not quite as boring as Band of Horses but is up there. Oof.
Snoozefest
Kinda boring. He Doesn't Know Why has the same chord progression as Tell Me Baby by RHCP?
Not my style at all. Definitely a blend of genres and I feel like it does all of them poorly.
I was going to give this a 4 at first. Then I kept listening and it was definite 3. But my god by the end it has to be a 2. I don’t know why this style of indie folk feels so phony, grating and saccharine to me but damn. By the end I couldn’t wait for it to be done. I geese it’s because all the songs sound the same? Anyway, not at all BAD by any means but as one of the top comments said, feels like plastic.
Good vibes for slow painting
I'm perplexed at what this even means.
Boring AF
The late 2000s-early 2010s folk sound gets so tiring to me so fast. This album just solidified that fact in my head. Maybe these guys were the first to get to that sounds? Otherwise, there really isn't anything super notable about this album. I think the peak of this era was Mumford & Son's Babel. Sigh No More was released a year after Fleet Foxes. Maybe they shared some common influences. idk.
Big up for the Bruegel the Elder cover. I channelled this to try to imagine the album as a concept album for a day in the life of a 16th Century Dutch peasant, in the spirit of the recent Call of The Valley. It fitted much of it pastoralism but this still didn't do much for me - file under typical late 00s twee US Indie stuff.
Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes Brooding indie rock from Seattle, Washington that sounds exactly how you think it sounds. A bit of a challenge getting through the last few songs but overall, a fairly inoffensive album of little importance.
I would've loved this 10 years ago. Probably would've given 2.5, I need to figure out how to give scoressss sorry
Folky sound Songs sounded a bit samey
I can appreciate this album being noteworthy for its influence on folk revival, and likely being major players in the 'stomp clap' that is to come, but this album did very little for me.
It's ethereal, college indie folk crap. Music for day traders who think they are interesting people. Did not like this, will not explain further. 2/5
Okay. Sounded wayy older than 2008. The second song tho??? Is that a cover or what? One time our building sub had us sing that in advisory and dang.... I wish it was last year. I liked the vibes of some of the songs, but not what they actually sounded like. Not awful. Wish it were noisier, but they're good with the guitars and I like how peaceful the vocals are. 4.5/10
I like aggressive European party music. This is not that. It is not so good that it converts me. It is not so bad that I wonder why anyone would want to listen. It is in the huge gulf between that where I cannot judge. It isn't for me but I have no idea how many people it is for
Not feeling it Mr Krabs.
Was looking forward to this as I’d heard good things about the band. Disappointed though and was a struggle to get through. Just sounded like Mumford and Sons. Won’t listen again.
A couple of songs I liked, but a lot of sameness otherwise.
holy shit was this boring.
This had moments of being a nice, relaxing time but it was mostly just boring and ambling around in nothingness.
Eh, I’m good.
I'm not sure I knew anything about Fleet Foxes, though I recognized the name, and when I listened to this, I recognized some of the songs. tldr: BORRRR-INNNNNNG Longer version: I really hated this era of music, all that Americana-revival stuff (your Avett Bros., your Mumford and Sons, UGGGHHHH THE LUMINEERS). It might just be that I'm a lunk-headed rock bro, but I just find most straight-folk stuff with no other elements really enervating. I have no doubt there's real talent, the harmonies are impressive, but it's just not for me.
Forgettable 2/5
I mean it’s good but it’s also very Provo PTSD
It’s well produced, I’ll give it that. But, this isn’t anything new and certainly isn’t essential listening. Feels like the ‘bohemian’ aspect of this music hit just the right nerve upon release, but like the name of the band, this feeling is fleeting, and easily replicated by other recordings.
The songs mainly all sound the same. Choir-boy vocals. Nothing distinctive from other bands of that time. If you like it, you like it. I don't.
Sounded too country for my liking, but supposed to be indie.
Half way through I turned off. Too samey, nonsensical dribble. So annoying as they obviously have talent but not for me.
I do feel sorta bad giving this the same rating as Napalm Death...
Hipster, beanie, ipod type beat. I'd probably like it best on a mountain on shrooms. Is that the Holy Hand Grenade in the cover??
Mega twee, typically pitchfork-approved indie pabulum with some occasionally golden harmonies but also lots of ultra sparse, dull, sub-My Morning Jacket songs. One breed of fox I wouldn’t mind seeing as especially squished road kill.
Using strings, horns, piano, and vocal harmonies, and other components drawn from the orchestral and lounge pop of the 1960s, with an emphasis on melody and texture this Chambers Pop feels dull, folksy, lukewarm and inoffensive.
Not a fan then, not a fan now
Heard of the band but haven't heard their music. This album was just boring. Not awful but boring. Literally nothing interesting going on 2/5
Lush harmonies, great musicianship and good songwriting are there. Unfortunately, it all started sounding the same after a couple of songs and I lost interest.
disappointing. appreciate the craft but too boring
This is a fine album of music, but for me, there was nothing particularly memorable here. No moments or songs really stuck out to me.
Had an old Genesis feel to it. Monotonous.
indie folk...ugh...
Lidt ligegyldig men ok.
Not as bad as I was bracing for, but not memorable.
Talented musicians playing music that will never interest me.
folky, was okay not my thing
its ok.... plodding. sad that this is on the list but not My Morning Jacket... this just sounds like Jim James unelectrified with annoying Beach Boy harmonies. Ragged Wood is lifted straight from Golden which came out 4 years before
Ethereal American Folk, played very well with lush close harmonies and wistful lyrics. Done very well but doesn’t excite.
Meh
Beginning: Beautiful harmonies. Feels like a better predecessor to Mumford and Sons. Not really my kind of daily listening, but nice for driving or upbeat background vibes. Got bored of it about half way through. Not my thing, but nice production and vocal layering.
To me this kind of music just blends in. I don't necessarily mean this style of music as it is characterized by this list but rather music with these vocals, this tempo and subject matter. It is not poorly done as far as I can tell it is just vanilla, boring and instantly forgettable. 2/5
while it's not bad, it's also very generic apart from a few pearls. most of it i've forgotten it as soon as i've heard it.
Pretty nice, but pretty boring.
It's a nice album with great harmonies and a lovely sound but I can't imagine wanting to listen to it.
On paper I should like Fleet Foxes, but for some reason they really rub me the wrong way. They have a contrived renaissance feel (like Jethro Tull but way more grating to my ears). They're just kinda lame
++: Sun It Rises, White Winter Hymnal, Quiet Houses +: Ragged Wood, Meadowlarks, Blue Ridge Mountains +-: Tiger Mountain Peasant Song, Heard Them Stirring, Your Protector -: He Doesn't Know Why, Oliver James 5,5/10
So much Bowie is on this list that sometimes it feels like it’s about quantity over quality. This album made no impact on me other than the strangely uninspired cover art.
Nah
Mediocrely dull. Inessential
End of the 00s was rife with the jingle jangle bands like Fleet Foxes. Some were better than others, but overall not a great era. It sounds like it wants to have depth but it doesn't. It's fine overall, but its hollow to me.
Tykkäävät enemmän Garfunkelista kuin Simonista. Onnistuvat silti kehittämään minussakin häivähdyksen siitä jalosta emotionaalisuudesta, jota he kokevat edustavansa. Tokassa biisissä myös jotain.
Utterly forgettable. Surprising myself for the disdain I have for this - my tolerance for twee and twee-adjacent has worn so thin. Only saved from the 1 star by their general competence.
I have nothing against folk music, per se, but I think it’s best experienced in the snug of a traditional pub, whilst drinking a pint of real ale, and played by women with long hair and floaty dresses, or men with straggly beards and chunky jumpers. Needless to say, fingers should be jammed firmly in lugholes. This album is in the American west coast folk tradition of the 60s, but it sounds too clean and overproduced, lacking in any sense of authentic lived experiences. The general effect of it was to wash over me, and not have any impact. I suspect that they might be better live.
I don’t mind this music at all. Quite pleasant, actually. Especially for a debut album. Nice instrumentation and great vocals and harmonies.
Day481 - this is literally music that doesn’t offend anybody. when my youngest was in elementary school they did white winter hymnal in music class. boring at best
boring
So this was like a folk album and its not my type of taste once again. I must say his voice is really nice to listen to but the lyrics are also not really that deep. The 2 stars are one for his voice and that one song ‘Tiger mountain Peasant song’.
Jakoś przeminęło z wiatrem. 2/5
It made me think i was gonna die at some point which i wasn't a massive fan of
Found it boring
Bit samey
I can see what they're going for and it's technically well done. Not just up my alley
disappointing
Basic hymnal structure, folk style instruments, repetitive and boring.
It's not bad, honestly. But I guess the recent zeitgeist has inspired some kind of revulsion against this sound world. It's nicely written music, and probably one of the better examples of this era of folk-tinged indie pop. But it just lacks emotional heft. And for music that's so clearly geared to elicit an emotional reaction, that feels like a shame.
winding-road. sadness. hopeful. Fav Songs: White Winter Hymnal Ragged Wood Oliver James
I tried this years ago and it didn't stick then and it didn't hit the target all these years later. Really respectable listening counts from top to bottom so it's popular, especially "White Winter Hymnal" at 267M listens. Even that song was just a meandering two and half minute ditty. I found it boring and good for background music in a retail store where you can't change the channel. I'd be the guy in the corner asleep at their concert. I would throw on Lord Huron if I wanted sleepy music, at least they have good hooks and a better vocalist. 2 stars, thanks for tryin'!
kind of scary tbh not my favourite 2/5
not a bad album but also not my cup of tea. too slow, too calm. Your Protector was the best song
Pleasant at first but it’s repetitive and drags on.
A bit slow. Seemed like indie rock. But overall didn’t like much of it. Maybe return to this band for another album?
Delicate harmonies and the singer has a nice voice. I found the album overall to be one note/tone and didn’t ever change tempo. Lots of wistful, melancholy ballads that weren’t inspiring at all. People at whatever folk fests this band plays at probably love them. Admittedly not my musical taste.
Meh
An indie record, as imagined by a top 40 listener. Hollow horseshit for those who could drown in a puddle while screaming about the unfathomable depth in which they are mired. Neutral Milk Hotel and The Decemberists both did this old-timey sound better and with a greater variety in the tunes.
I really wanted to like this album but alas it is boring as hell. What a waste of a talented singer in a band that is the equivalent of a warm salad.
The production is good, but it's just a bit boring innit? It's all very twee and lovely and lah-de-dah. Let's all drink a pint of mead and stroke our luscious beards while swapping our favourite vegan recipes.
Melancholic and easy listening, didn’t really catch my attention. Ok listening.
Twee, performative, soulless. Forgettable snd entirely indifferent.
Feels too religious for need
2.5
this is just not for me, but it wasn’t too bad to listen to as I worked. I don’t think men should be allowed to have lead vocals for music like this. a woman’s voice would have been so much more pleasing.
Just not that great, I don’t get it, ok I guess
Fleet foxes have some catchy singles. Not on this album. Not sure it needs to be in this list.
Did not like
Not my cup of tea
Nope, didn't speak to me at all. 2/5
Not for me
Very sleepy sounding. Not for me but I can absolutely see how it works for loads of others.
Gave it the college try, but this one wasn't my favorite. Found it monotonous and couldn't get through the full album.
Couple ok tracks but was kind of like a whole album of those acoustic Alt J tracks that you skip
I'm genuinely happy there are people that will like this. I'm not in their groove. But good for all of you.
Not for me, but I get why some people might like it
I wanted to like this because I really like FJM but I just found it so boring 😔
recycled country music
NOPE.
There wasn't one song on this album that caught and held my interest. It's well produced, but the songs themselves are just not interesting and quite forgettable. The faux folksy theme was uninspiring.
Mumford and Sons bem feito
Progressive-death-folk? Has potential. I wanted a less polished production. This felt very academic, kind of showing off their chops, demonstrating a style. Nothing really hooked me though and mostly derivative. If you're going to do your version of Folk, the lyricism needs to take center stage. This is, again, kind of a stylistic exploration without having much to say. That droll singing voice again. Too cool for the turn-of-the-century. Middle-class white suburbanites don't usually have much to say though.
My interest in folk music exists, but it is very selective. I had never heard of this particular artist before, so I eagerly anticipated pressing the play button. However, within the first couple of songs, disappointment was already palpable. Too slow and too atmospheric. This band was described in spotify to be part of late-2000s indie-folk boom. Also it was described as folk-rock. I found very little folk or rock there, indie maybe. Once again, maybe this is part of this list because it sold so well. Few songs started in an intriguing way but then there was nothing else.
Very much not my kind of music. I remember when the music critics were hyping this up, but I've probably brushed it off and didn't really pay attention, since this was new to me. I wasn't at all surprised to fing this was a Sub Pop release. Popish folk with a very artsey touch feels very forced.
Vague.
Velikodušna trojka jer me The Who dosta ubio u pojam. Tako daa, ajmo mi next.
Not my thing at all. Really didn’t like this. Bit slow and boring - didn’t make me feel anything.
2/5 not for me
2 Sterne. Cooles Cover.
the kinda music that just makes me wanna turn it off the moment i put it on ... i like joy and pleasure but there's something just stomach turning about this music to me and i especially hate the album artwork ... whats insane is that i dont even think its bad it just makes me physically ill BUT i do wanna try the hunter biden special (getting a lap dance while smoking crack cocaine to this music)
You can frolic about in the echoey indie sounds of this album, but most of them will be forgotten to the whimsical sands of time.
Ah man that did not hit. I see what they’re going for and I don’t approve. Maybe it held up better when it came out
My Sophomore roommate in college was obsessed with this album. I, on the other hand, am not a big fan. Overall, I just don't like Indie Folk. I like music with a little bite and this is just soft as vanilla pudding--the most bland kind.
Vanilla pudding, not much else to say really
Good (I guess?) but not for me.
I think I need to give this album another spin to give a good review of it. I like folk music, but I found this album a little slow and artsy. First review is a :star::star:, but I suspect that a few listens may be required to fully enjoy this.
I like the instrumentals. But the lyrics prevented me from totally enjoying it. I will maybe go back soon and feel different. Lets see.
All the songs on this sound the same. I wouldn't say it's a terrible album, but I disagree with it being on a notably list, and I wouldn't seek it out.
Not an unpleasant listening experience but as someone commented to me it’s basically a sound with no substance. So sounds good but not a classic
I may give this one another try in the future...
The whole album has a single vibe. Decent enough mixed into a playlist, but gets boring over a whole album
It wasn’t bad but not really my style.
Lacking feeling
it's OK, not sure why it's on this list.
cute
Folk. Legalzinho
First song pretty good, couple of other decent ones but too folky, 2.5/5
A fine folk pop album. A little boring, not much differentiation between tracks. At least the album is brief and does hold a consistent theme. Sounds like the way a suburban parent wearing Patagonia looks.
This is #day80 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and... what's the hype about? It's my first time listening to Fleet Foxes and quite possibly the last one. While I'm okay with some '60s-70s folk as you might have noticed in my previous reviews, this is way too much modern indie to my ears... Many songs blend into each other, and I can't tell the difference between them. I'm not a fan of this upbeat, positive-folk style either. That's not what I would choose to listen to before I die. Back to low scores because it's a 2 out of 5 this time. Looking forward to #day81.
Meh, thought I was going to like this, but it's way way to folky.
I was just never a huge fan of this kind of late 2000s folk rock.
Do you like indie music?, Well then this album is for you. I like this album, the songs have good rythem and good beat. The voice of the singer is pretty good. The lyrics are pretty weird on the song but it sounds good. Would I recommed this album the songs sound good.
Dull indie rock for coffee shops
old school melodies. recognised the second song and the voice.
Pretty good. 2.5
lost me by the second millennial whoop…
Not my cup of tea; maybe since I’m sick of the second song on here thanks to hearing it so often in the circles I was in. My favorite part was when they just played, then I got caught on the repetitive riff that is their distinguishing riff in the second song….is the riff in every song where ever they couldn’t do other ideas. 2/10
This band is strange for me. They have a pretty cool sound but they very rarely do anytyhing with it! It must all be in the same key or something, because are their songs have the same feeling, but they just do basic soft guitar picking and harmonies. There's only one song I like and I think it's the only one to have drums.
Not quite too my liking, a little sonically drab.
I guess I just don't get folk music. It wasn't bad, but I didn't think the guy could sing very well and the music wasn't that interesting. 2.5/5
Hard to explain but something about this album left me just a bit cold. The ingredients are there; good harmonies, nice, well-crafted indie-folk-but-not-quite, but I've been playing it for a few days and every time it starts again I don't feel like finishing it. Somehow less than the sum of its parts.
Ok-ish, dull music that sounds very similar to other bands
I’ve had a couple of people recommend Fleet Foxes to me over the years and I’ve never taken them up on this. Now, I realise I wasn’t missing anything special. In fact, I hated this. There’s few genres I hate more than “indie folk”. I resisted giving it one star because there are some moments which are not terrible.
Very interesting style, reminds me of old styles mixed with new.
Meh. This isn't my genre. I'm sure Loudermilk would be raving about it, but non-critics like me find it meek and effeminate.
I want to like it more. I tried to like it more. I don’t hate it. But it just suffers from a banal sameness throughout that keeps me from getting overly excited about it. Almost a 3.
Indie folk music with a medieval twist I guess. I was interested on the opening track, but it soon all blurred together. It's almost aggressively inoffensive, and I found it rather dull. I think my biggest gripe with this album is that it could have been released in prior decades and fit right in. It's not ground breaking in any way whatsoever, nor did it start any trends or movements. I'm assuming it's on here because it sold a lot.
