Solid fuzz rock album 1001 album worthy: Yes - 17/31

Mediocre white men: blues rock edition.

This was just a really solid rock album, nothing else to say really

This one just faded into background noise for me. Well made but ultimately uninspiring light rock.

Blues, Rock, 2010 -> 3

Enjoyed this more than I thought I would. I would have enjoyed it more if the vocals didn't have effects on every damn song.

You could remove the spaces between the songs and just have one long continuous song because every one of them sounds exactly the same. I really liked Sinister Kid when it came out, but listening to this entire album is aural torture. Listening to one or two songs is fine, but more than that is just too monotonous. I kept checking how much longer I had left to listen to this album. That's not a good indicator for a repeat listen.

Buena música pero no destaca demasiado. La puedo poner de fondo y disfrutarla así, pero no me vuela la peluca.

I remember this being such a huge record and how representative it was of music at the time. There was a big trend of using vintage equipment and methods to record, and it seems like the Black Keys might've been the band that started the trend. Cool record that had significant impact at the time, but I don't think it's really that unique as time has gone on.

A qualidade da banda é inegável por mais melancólico que o disco possa transmitir! Senti a falta de maiores sucessos.

Brothers is a decent, if unexceptional, record. I like the songs okay, but it's not an album I'd return to often. I get why it helped them cross over to a larger audience, because it's well produced with a handful of catchy songs. (Danger Mouse knows what he's doing). People tend to like that sort of thing, which is fine. I want music that really grabs me and carries me along, preferably with a sound that distinguishes itself as being both genuine and distinctly different, and these songs fall short of doing that. They're trying though. I'm not sure anyone NEEDS to hear this album, but if you're going to check this band out you could pick worse places to start. For blues rock from the current century, I'll take The White Stripes over all the competition, and they've got 5 albums out of 6 that I still enjoy regularly.

3.5 stars

3.5 stars

I think the album is good, and I like a decent amount of songs. I am not their biggest fan. It's between a 3 and 4 for me.

Really liked some songs, really didn't like some songs.

Gutta rocker jo litt

This is sort of when they started to suck. Howlin for you is trash but I enjoyed relistening to this and would definitely not complain if someone put it on. Some of the instrumentation sounds like wu-tang beats.

I like the Black Keys. Brothers is a solid album, but I KNOW it gets better. A LOT better...aka El Camino. I really like the vocals and guitar parts but some songs on this album just aren't as catchy as they will get later on. More like a 2.5 Liked Songs: "Everlasting Light" , "Next Girl" , "Howlin' for You" , "She's Long Gone" , "Ten Cent Pistol" , "Sinnister Kid"

***An ok album

Very solid. The songs all blend together for me though.

Enjoyable but all just sounds like The Black Keys to me which prevents

Few cool songs

Fine, nothing special. If a liquor commercial was an album.

This is a nice CD, I listed to it a bunch when it came out and saw Black Keys on this tour. But I wouldn't have said it's one of the best CDs of that era. Really, as superlatives go, it's more like the most-normal good CD of that era. Not that it's bad, but I'm more just surprised the guy put it on this list. For starters, he seems to be kind of an Anglophile, and most of the best music from this period is from the British bands. This came out kind of at the tail end of the indie rock period and was sort of a bridge between that style, with the raw stripped-down hard-rocking sound, and the bullshit Disneyland Americana of The Lumineers and Mumford & Sons that would come later. Listening to it again now, it opens strong, the first five songs or so are bangers, but it really loses steam at about the halfway point, after "She's Long Gone". To the extent that a band that is to a first approximation a Doors cover band ever had anything at all to say, they definitely didn't have 55 minutes worth of stuff to say. This would've made a better 35 minute CD. It's not really new, it's not really virtuosic, but it's solid within-the-lines rock. I didn't mind putting it back on again.

Nice enough sound. They sort of merged with white denim at this point.

I have a weird relationship with this album. I was SO into the singles when I was in high school, but I found the record itself bloated and a bit boring. Nowadays, I don’t really get much out of “Howlin’ for You” or “Tighten Up,” but deeper cuts like “Sinister Kid” or “10 Cent Pistol” are total jams. It’s a decent album overall; I prefer El Camino if we’re looking at the commercial peak of the Black Keys, but it’s far better than anything they’ve put out since Turn Blue

Very good. Gets a bit repetitive.

Didn’t dislike it, but it was all a bit samey

Let the record show, I’m a fan of The Black Keys, but even they’d likely scoff at 'Brothers' landing on any “best of all time” list. The album marked a shift from their raw, garage-rock roots, with Danger Mouse’s production giving it a slicker feel at the cost of some of the gritty charm found in earlier work. The decision clearly paid off, earning them their first Grammy and going platinum. 'Brothers' has undeniable highlights—“Tighten Up” is an infectious hit, and “Howlin’ for You” delivers a driving rhythm with a catchy chorus. “Next Girl” stands out for its bluesy riff and tension. However, other tracks are solid in isolation but suffer from a lack of distinctive identity, blending into each other. The result is an unsettling dip in energy, leaving you wondering which track you’re even listening to. At over an hour, the album starts to drag, with some moments feeling repetitive. Brothers is a good album, but far from “best of” material. While its hits still resonate, the overall experience is weighed down by pacing issues. The Black Keys would perfect this sound on El Camino, making Brothers, despite its success, feel more like a stepping stone than a defining moment. Did/Do I own this release? No Does this release belong on the list? Even The Black Keys would say no. Would this release make my personal list? No. Will I be listening to it again? Unlikely.

Pretty standard Black Keys - all their songs sound the same to me. That being said, it is a formula that I like. Some pretty funky songs but doesn’t blow me away.

Favourite track: Tighten Up.

A perfectly fine 3.5/5 that can be a 4/5 at 1am at a dive bar. Like some of the artists on here, it is hard to go above a certain rating when they have other projects I just enjoy more (specifically the earlier Rubber Factory). I liked this album enough to see them on their tour for this album and it was clear they were heading for some more mainstream adoption rolling off of this. Actually sitting down to listen to this for the first time in about a decade, I found myself missing some of the grit of their earlier records and being bored by the radio singles, but still enjoyed the vibe as a whole.

I never understood the appeal for this album being so good. Its good, but not that good. Kinda funny these guys tried to do an arena tour and cancelled the whole thing for lack of ticket sales. This is an album by The Black Keys. The rating for this album is 3 stars.

Good hooks but not really grabbing me Howlin for You riff has become a classic One-dimensional blues rock I would probably rate 2.5 if I could. Not bad, but other than the hits it didn’t compel me.

Great new age I guess I would call it indie rock? Really fun throughout, memorable riffs and some great standout tracks

Like every album made by The Black Keys or Kings of Leon, I wish they would just shut up. Such nice pop-rock compositions almost always ruined by the singers voice. I can’t quite pin it down, but there’s something in both the tonality of the singers voice and the lyrics that is so grating on the ears. On the plus side, this is recorded excellently. The fidelity and textures of all the instruments, how they all come together, it’s all fantastic. Softest 3 possible.

Music to sell stuff to.

Never listened to them before. Reazlly good sound

Its okay

I like a lot of the tracks on this album but I also find it to be pretty repetitive. 3.0 rating from me.

packets of energy...grindhouse

The second half of this album was better than the first half. Still, three stars is the most I'm prepared to offer.

Bluesy rock. Pretty good but I didn’t really care for the vocals. Sounded almost electronic in a way.

This was a fine album. Weird to listen to it right after "Let It Bleed" by The Rolling Stones, the influence is obvious, although more on the Blues side than the Country side. Nothing particularly memorable about tjis album.

Heart said higher because it reminded me of being a young lad at university, head said it probably doesn’t deserve to be here. A 3 it is! Woo!

okay, nothing special

I couldn't listen to the second disc because it was unavailable on Spotify and I couldn't be bothered going to youtube just for the live versions of songs. I am surprised with how good this album was and I enjoyed listening to it in the background. I wish we could give half-star ratings, so this would be 3.5 and not just a mid album, but it's not really a 4.

Reminds me of the good old days

Fun album. I actually hadn’t ever heard the whole thing. Had a good time with this one.

A couple of good songs and a decent sound does not a full album make

''Everlasting Light'' is cool. Sounds mysterious. ''Next Girl'' is mid. ''Tighten Up'' is okay, it has cool features. ''Howlin' for You'' is the same as ''Tighten Up''. ''She's Long Gone'' is forgettable. ''Black Mud'' is also forgettable, but makes up for the fact that it's an instrumental. ''The Only One'' is okay, much better than the last two. ''Too Afraid to Love You'' is cool, sounds like The Doors (as does the rest of the album). ''Ten Cent Pistol'' once again, another forgettable song. ''Sinister Kid'' is okay. ''The Go Getter'' is okay, it's interesting. ''I'm Not The One'' is a good song. ''Unknown Brother'' carrying on the strong vibe from ''I'm Not The One''. ''Never Gonna Give You Up'' is a very good song! The best in the album, so far. ''These Days'' is an okay song.

Good alternative band. Love their music.

The songs I liked from this album, I still like but it didn’t introduce anything new to me really. Good not great.

Poppy electric blues rock with light flakes of psychedelia. Catchy hooks, catchy fuzzy/overdriven riffs. Auerbach’s smooth falsetto. Decent groove to it. Pretty repetitive songs and ton of variety in sound - which makes the 55 min run time drag a bit. Not much soars, but it’s very listenable and pretty broadly appealing.

Not super into the music, but appreciate it, nonetheless

First listen through Passive listening while cleaning Vibey. Songs definitely blend together. You can definitely tell they were written at the same time. Undecided if it's a good thing or not. Definitely nice to listen to as background though. Initial impression is 7.5 out of 10. During second listen, will be analyzing more musicality and lyrics

I dunno man I kind of wish I had left my understanding of the Black Keys to be informed by their hits that already made it to me, which are pretty fuckin great! They should get a smiley face on their homework for sticking with the vibe, but the rest of the album feels like a stream of faxed over copies of the hits and I’m a little bummed to have learned there’s not more to it.

I feel the urge to purchase an F150

Funky. Good beats. Some pretty good stuff on this one. Highlights: Everlasting Light Howlin' For You

It was really good. But honestly a bit boring. A lot of the songs seemed to be of the same structure and template and lacked a lot of variety. That being said I thoroughly enjoyed the song "Too Afraid to Love You".

Was nice, but not really my vibe of music

Primo dad blues. You can find this in any fuzz pedal review video. Decent background stuff.

Pretty nice bluesy rock - their next album El Camino is much better and more consistent. This was quite front-loaded.

I like the Black Keys. I haven’t listened in a while. Pretty good.

It's interesting how I can like something and simultaneously found it boring. Don't get me wrong, this has some good songs and I like some of the riffs and chill atmosphere, but I get the sense this band has done better. Also, does it need to be almost an hour?

Groovy.

An American band pretending to be a British band pretending to be an American band. I'm exhausted. I feel like I've heard all of these songs over the years but I've never really been interested enough to seek out this band or this album.

I enjoy this album a fair bit, and a number of years ago I would have given this a 4 or 5. El Camino is better imo Best thing it did for me was get me into Muddy Waters years ago.

Couple songs I really enjoyed. All in all not a bad album but didn’t leave a lasting impression.

It was fine but only really background music tbh

Consistently alright but certainly nothing special.

This is okay. I think the songs are pretty decent, although the album is a bit too long and repetitive. Perfectly middle of the road. 5/10 Would I listen again? I'd probably end up hearing some of the tracks on various commercials

It's not bad, but it feels a little flat throughout

The more I listened the more this grew on me.

It’s good but got a little diluted by the shear number of songs. Edit, edit, edit…so it went from great to good as an album.

Another album that suffers from too damn many songs. At 9/10 songs this album approaches great - probably the high water mark for the band and the modern blues rock genre. At 15 songs it gets a little stale and has no real arc - just lots of music - a lot of it quite good. I would call it 3.5/5.

Some of the better pop music out there. I didn't really love the second half of the album with less hits, though it was still fine to listen to.

Solid blues rock. Loved this album in college, but after listening again it seems to be lacking something.

This album started off decently, but slowly devolved into a sad mess of generic garage rock

I quite liked it for a bit but it was overly long without delivering new ideas. I've always wondered why I'm not more of a Black Keys fan and after listening to an album I now know why - its all so samey.

good but most of the songs kinda sound the same

When I was 16 years old in 2015 or so, I was kind of a big Black Keys fan and I actually bought this album on iTunes, one of my treasured gift-card-off-the-Walmart-rack purchases. Today I have mixed feelings about the Black Keys and their sound. To sum it up, they sometimes feels like the beer commercial version of a much better band. But isn’t that kind of an elitist take? The Black Keys were a valuable window into a wider world of rock music for me, and I imagine I can’t be alone in that. Maybe in the years since they blew up in the early 2010s, they’ve actually become under-appreciated? Anyway, the album. There are a few great songs here alongside a variety of mid bluesy filler. The production is objectively pretty strong, as everything’s very clear and sharp, but something about this fuzzy yet clean sound isn’t clicking for me. I could definitely get in a mood where this album hits for me, but it’s telling that I can remember finishing Brothers for the first time as a teenager and feeling my love for the Black Keys starting to fade. There’s something about this album, and this band as a whole, that just feels hollow and overcooked. But hey, they can still write some great singles and you can still have fun listening to them. Best song: Everlasting Light

I recognize a couple of these songs, Tighten Up and Howlin' for You. This is like some Mississippi delta music or some Bayou music, or something. It's ok, but not my favorite type of music. I don't really have an interesting critique of this album. It doesn't move me, but it isn't terrible. I like the guitar, keys, and at some points, the vocals. The drums are just basic rhythm most of the time (The Go Getter is an exception), which I think is what bothers me about the album. I feel like I could play these drums, which isn't good because I can't play drums. Not trying to hate on it. It definitely fits this album. It isn't a bad album, but I wouldn't ride around listening to this. The back half of the album is much better. Tracks 7, 8, and 11 were a few of my favorites on here.

This was an interesting one. A mix of soul and funk. They went for more of an overall vintage sound throughout the album. I feel like a lot of the songs may have grown out of loose jam sessions rather than maybe someone showing up with a riff or a chorus to build a song around. There were not too many hooks in many of the songs to me. It was sort of a play in the background type of album. Not bad, but nothing really jumping out at me either. I'd heard of the Black Keys for years but had never listened to anything by them. For some reason while listening to them I thought to myself that this is the type of band that might be able to tour with the Alabama Shakes and Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night sweats. Also, for some reason I have the Black Keys lumped in a category in my mind called Millennial Music. That sound usually features some form of group singing at some point in songs, some decent music skill and not too many spikes in emotion. Sort of like some decent vanilla ice cream. Music that is ok to have on in the background but you wouldn't necessarily sit and listen to in a focused way.

Very enjoyable early 2010's white boy music. Some good stuff in there. Not revolutionary but extremely nostalgic, and sometimes that's all that people want.

I wanted to like this and for the first half of it I thought it might be a rare, first time listen, 4-star rating. But then it all got a bit samey and there wasn’t really any variation in any of the sound or vocals. Maybe that’s their vibe, I don’t know. Anyway, it’s ended up as a mid rated album, which I’m not really fussed about ever hearing again

One of my favorite of their albums.

I'm missing some outstanding music experiance. Nice modern blues-rock ...

Sometimes you just need good, solid, unpretentious blues rock. The Black Keys deliver.

It’s always tough when you’re best songs we’re produced by other people. I think they have a cool and unique style that feels modern western inspired, but a lack of creativity around that style leaves me thinking there is some unrealized potential in this album. I did really like the singles but when they run out of money for outside producers the album falls a little flat.

Not bad. Not great, but certainly listenable.

Steady. Not something I’d opt for straight away but I wouldn’t turn it off either

I feel like I've heard the style of "blues-rock-pop" presented on this album so many times and in so many songs...yet I've always mapped it to the Black Keys exclusively. I tacked on the "pop" tag because if there's one thing the Black Keys were incredible at in their heyday, it was making their music attractive to almost any ear that meets it. This formula of smokey and reverb vocals singing these catchy phrases, these punchy, loud drums, and so many layers of guitar distortion were more than enough to excite anyone upon initial impact. Unfortunately, when it comes to their albums, after the first few songs, the honeymoon phase wears off. And in this album's case, considering it's quite lengthy, it's hard to mask how repetitive it gets near the end. With that said, it never gets unenjoyable. Aside from the truck commercialism of 'Howlin For You' that I can't stand, there isn't a *bad* song here. There are certainly some great ones though like 'Tighten Up' especially. I also really love the sentiment presented in the song 'Unknown Brother'. It's a weird album, by an even weirder band. An album that has all the pieces to be, in theory, incredible - but to me at least, the Black Keys style does not complement this longer album format. Good album with some great tracks. Not one I'll rush back to though.

Only really cared for the songs I've heard. The rest was extremely forgettable.

It's alright. There's a little energy to it. I like the rock revival 10 years prior with the strokes and the white stripes etc better tho.

Liked it

Bit boring, funny to hear "Tighten up" that has been used in several intros. Nice sounding guitar at times

Never managed to get into The Black Keys that much, though some of their earlier blues-ier stuff i've heard was pretty good. Expected this to be fairly commercial blues rock, and it is, but there's some really good songs especially stacked at the front. It gets tiring by the time you reach the end, but you could definitely pick a few songs off here and enjoy them on your own time.

Very well executed project, kind of monotonous at certain times, but the quality is there.

grungy and swampy. Decent, but not sure why it' on this list.

i quite liked it actually! not much big standouts to me but i liked the album and the vibe of the songs overall ☺️ would give it a 3.5 if i could but alas…

This was ok, didn’t think there was much variation though—it sounded all very samey.

I wanted to like it but it just didn’t hit the spot for me. A couple of tracks were bangers (howlin for you, chop and change), and I didn’t hate the sound but it just fell a bit flat.

I quite liked this. Bluesy, grungy but I also hear some glam. Yeah, I'd give another of their albums a fair go.

Nothing to do on a Sunday evening, staring into the sunset.

After reading the comments, I was poised to actively hate this album, but I didn’t?

Sounds like a bunch of generic indie songs made up for car commercials. And the fact that they named a song 'Never Gonna Give You Up' that didn't even have to do with Rick Astley is just slander. Not bad though.

It sounded exactly like I expected it would based on the 1 or 2 songs from these guys that I've heard.

Fuck sake some of the sounds here are really cool but it's just so repetitive and kinda formulaic. Not to mention there's 15 songs here, which is just way too many for a modern bluesy album. It's not bad, Lime I said there are some cool sounding parts but just all together I was getting sick of it slowly and slowly as I went. Fav songs: - Everlasting Light - Howlin For You - Black Mud

- good vibes, very enjoyable - love the rock n roll - loses the energy in the second half but gets a lot more bluesy which is kinda cool - solid 3.5

Good album, but could have been stripped back. Can see the influence in the likes of Hozier today

Would I listen to it again: yes Is it a no-skip album: yes Do I like it: yes

It sounds good, but it also misses something. Feels very much like a copy of something.

LOVED the first track and then the rest of the album kind of fell flat.

“Everlasting Light” and the rest.

Sounds like the Black Keys I guess. Not too special to be honest.

Solid blues rock album

Good. Pool playing. Carrie likes them. All was just good and cool. Nothing great.

I get it, but it's not for me. They use a lot of things that I like, but this isn't getting the same response. It's like eating someone's else's favorite flavor of ice cream. It's not bad, but it feels like this is for someone else.

Solid straight ahead rock. I would love to listen to this in a medium-sized venue, kinda intimate atmosphere, but entirely understand why their arena tour fizzled.

I remember really enjoying this on release but I don't think time has been kind to this one. It's perfectly fine of course, but endless licensing to TV and commercials has dulled its appeal and contributed to its overly-clean-production-with-hot-vocals sounding cliché. It's unmistakably the sound of 2010 and possibly even a contributing factor to rock music's decline. Too harsh? Upon relistening I quite enjoyed the lesser-exposed back half I hadn't heard in many years and would probably give it a 3.5 if I could.

My first exposure to The Black Keys was in 2008 when they opened for My Morning Jacket at Red Rocks. I went in not knowing either band and left with my mind blown. What an incredible night - afterwards I dove deep into both bands' catalog. I had The Black Keys first 5 albums in my regular rotation for months afterwards and was stoked when they released Brothers 2 years later. At the time, I remember listening to it quite a bit, talking with friends who were also fans about it, etc. But now, 16 years later, it doesn't strike the same chord, which I'm kind of surprised about. I hadn't listened to this in years and was excited to see it pop up today, but I'm leaving underwhelmed. Yes, it's still good. But I think this album was the beginning of the end of my regular listening of these guys. I saw them again in 2012 and left disappointed to see a band that was once raw and unpolished, which was most of the appeal for me, playing a repetitive stadium tour with the exact same set list every night. What a bummer. This album is the perfect representation of just that - a band that started with a raw and unpolished sound that evolved into one that's overproduced, cookie-cutter, and redundant. It is what it is - very representative of the "Black Keys" sound, but it all sounds pretty much the same. I think that personally the luster has worn off and the fact that they've just released more of the same after same stuff has soured me a bit on these guys. Don't get me wrong - this isn't music that I immediately turn off when it comes on - but it's not something where I look forward to listening to an entire album of anymore, and in my opinion, not anywhere close to The Black Keys' best.

Ganz interessant, aber aufdauer ein wenig langweilig. Die Band hat einen besonderen Sound. Das ist interessant

Bog standard 2010s rock, for better or worse

I mean, it's fine. A bit dull. The production technique of "every mic is slightly too hot" for that vintage sound started to wear on me by the end.

This is like, the soundtrack of BBQ and beer commercials from the 00s-10s. It's not BAD music but they've been licensed so much for that shit it's hard to take it really seriously. The songs aren't terrible, and some of the riffs/melodies are really nice - I would listen to them again but right now, I'm gonna go buy some ribs and Pascifico.

Ihan ok, vähän tylsä

some good songs but still can’t shake the car commercial music vibe

Transported me back to 2010. Talking about who want a TBH from me on Facebook.

its okay it just bores me

This is a quite good album, however, it does get a bit repetitive. I like the Black Keys, but many of the songs on this album - while individually good - sound very similar. Another album that, in my opinion, suffers for going over the hour mark. I really wish I could give this a 3.5. 3 stars doesn’t do it justice, but I just don’t know if it’s 4 stars good.

I like to think the number of Spotify listens on each track represent people's actual reaction to listening to the songs in order. "Hey, this is pretty cool. Nice bluesy synthy rock mash-up genre. I dig it. ... Holy smokes, this is great! Tighten Up, Howlin' For You... very catchy. A nice fresh take on the genre. ... Ah, the next track kind of sounds the same. Oh well, every album has its filler. ... Oh. A lot of these tracks sound exactly the same. They're in the same key, similar tempos, and use an identical instrument line-up. Really, the only difference is occasionally swapping out acoustic with electronic percussion (or vice versa). ... Yep, pretty much all the tracks after the big singles sound the same as one another. I mean, sure, it's good music, but it completely lacks versatility. This could probably get higher than a 3 from me – but it would be a stretch. The high-pitched singing, most prevalent in the opening track Everlasting Light, is really funny, showing that The Black Keys had the ability to not take themselves too seriously. They vaguely emulate that feel throughout the rest of the album, but that initial flurry of excitement and weirdness is never quite recaptured. The album also lacks distinctive guitar riffs or solos. The entire mix has a sort of blustery, lo-fi filter put over it (but it's subtle), greatly reducing the audio quality. It almost sounds like a 40s or 50s rock record if not for the synths. Not that that's a bad thing, but it just lacks what makes really convincing blues. 3/5 Key tracks: Everlasting Light, Tighten Up, Howlin' For You, I'm Not The One, Unknown Brother

Tour cancelling

There are lots of reviews commenting on a lack of authenticity; why not just listen to actual blues; etc. I don't really know enough about where the Black Keys sit, to judge. It didn't strike me as try-hard or pretentious, as some have said. I did clock the resemblance to the White Stripes, who sound cooler imo. I enjoyed it (it was a bit long) and would go 7 out of 10, but perversely, perhaps, would also comment that I don't think it belongs on this list, because I don't think it particularly adds to or illuminates the story of music. So there you go, I did judge in the end.

It was good, liked the instrumentals and background a hell of a lot more than I liked the actual vocals and lyrics. But still a good listen.

Pretty good music

This is a review of an album by the Black Keys I like El Camino better!

couple hits but the sound has aged a bit for me

Solid album 5/10

Non particolarmente bello, alcune carine, non lo ho finito di ascoltare

Enjoyed

Some good tunes on here...but I don't by the concept of this making the list

I enjoyed it. But I remember nothing of it.

Aha, the first band about which I can say ‘I saw them before they were famous’. That was is their early pure two-piece rawer blues encarnation, which I liked (and I guess they lucked out slightly that the White Stripes opened the door on that style renaissance). This album seems to be the point they transitioned to a more popular sound, which I also like. However, I think other later albums are probably stronger at the latter. So this sits in a bit of a hinterland. It’s got some stronger tracks early on, but felt like the album dragged a bit to me. Other ones of theirs might be a 4, but think this is a 3 for me.

My nephew likes them and some good sludgy bluesy rock. Much better than Adele.

Pretty solid stuff. If I ever needed an album that at least 70% of the people in the room would enjoy I reckon this is the pick. Probably a 3.5 rating overall.

Solid grooves and kinda blah

El Camino is a great album, but not ventured further than that, so when this came up instead, I was surprised and intrigued to hear what this would be like. It seems a lot more effects laden than I expected. Their sound is a slower bluesy garagey style, which is a bit different to their later stuff, but I like it. Are there any standout tracks? On first listen, the songs seem to blend into each other in a nice enough way, with quite a bit going on in each song, gentle guitar licks here and there, but when he gets going the guitar playing is excellent. Maybe its a bit too American vintage blues sounding for my regular tastes, but it is good enough for a high 3

El Camino's poppy sound is better imo.

this is what my hands look like after buying my new ford pickup. but then there was someone who coughed a little bit of calming slime on my hands near the end so i was like wow thats nice.

I cannot believe that this album came out in 2010. How is that possible? Wasn't as spectacular as I remember. 3/5

This album is fine. There’s not really much notable about it, it’s just fine. I knew The Black Keys were fuzz rock, but I don’t really like the blues direction on this one.

Synes den bliver monoton og for lang, men det lyder sgu meget godt. Danger Mouse produktioner i 00'erne 🤌🤌

I begyndelsen lød det lidt som et lidt mere moderne take på Jack White, men det er lidt mere sin egen stil. Der er nogle bangers på den her plade, men den bliver tynd mod slutningen.

Top review says it all.

Totally acceptable white boy blues rock slog from the worst decade of music!

too long, didn't really like the singing it makes every song sound the same. The one song he sings a little different is on 'the only one' and idk it still kinda sounds the same 4/10

How do you drain the excitement out of the stomp-thump genre? Decaffeinated rock. It sounds like Portugal the Man overslept for the exam and had to copy off of Imagine Dragons' paper.

Liked, although most songs sounded the same. Reminded me of Alabama Shakes, but not sure if they're really that similar. Favourite song: Tighten Up (that tracks... it did win a Grammy)

Long time since I listened to it. Sounds like White Stripes' garage with a more folky blues feel and pop-like anthems. Sonically coherent, and they have their own identity, but it's a bit repetitive. Strong start (Everlasting Light is a classic that stuck with me), dips in the middle and struggles to bring back up the energy. At 53mn, it drags on too much. It feels like every song could be used as background music in TV shows: as enjoyable as it is forgettable. 6/10

Not bad

I really enjoyed this, although I wished I was listening to the White Stripes a lot of the time. Also the tracks 'Tighten Up', 'These Days ' and 'Never Gonna Give You Up' got my hopes up that they might be cover versions of Nico / Rick Astley / The Untouchables but they just turned out to be more of the same. Solid 3/5.

Coulda been 4, but that Howlin For You song is so annoying. It needs to be dragged out in the snow and shot then thrown into a woodchipper.

Never really bought into The Black Keys hypetrain. I think they are fine enough, but I have never found their music all that compelling. That said, I understand the appeal; they tap a certain chord just right in the indie resurrection of a bluesy sound. Like a much cleaned up White Stripes. They certainly have a distinctive sound -- I can best describe it as "dusty" with effect-laden vocals often ghosting about the instrumentals. Howlin' for You is a fine enough song that always makes me think of Rock and Roll Pt II. I also enjoy the instrumental jam Black Mud. It is a bit rough around the edges, giving an improvised atmosphere to it all, but the groove is undeniable. Mostly had this on in the background this Monday morning. I really didn't mind it at all, but there were very few points that really captured my attention. I like how cohesive this all feels from a production standpoint and did like the little bits of psych influence. While the songs themselves are tight, I felt like nearly an hour straight grew a little tiring. To my ears this is a solid enough high 3.

Nice work!

Listen, I love the Black Keys. Or at least I LOVED them. They were my favorite band for years after I heard Rubber Factory for the first time. I subsequently bought a bunch of their records and a guitar pedal or two to try to sound like Dan Auerbach. This was one album after the one where they started to lose me. It's not terrible, but they started to get too slick and clean-cut. On the one hand, I was glad they weren't sticking to their predictable low-fi garage blues rock, which I'm sure would've gotten old. On the other hand, I didn't want them to go so radio-friendly. Good for them for making a living on their craft. Bad for me. I still have their first few albums on vinyl - except, somewhat ironically, for Rubber Factory - and I might put one on after listening to this. ...honestly, after listening, this still has some kickass tracks, but what I said above is still accurate and this is still a 3/5 at best.

3 mostly an album of ok songs. Very samey sounding and way too much use of that awful over-amplified vocal filter. Unknown brother and sinister kid were the highlights.

Like Alabama Shakes, really well-produced music that has been totally owned by coffeeshops near college campuses. It immediately makes me feel like I'm grading papers late at night and have totally plateau'd on caffeine intake. That's not a knock on the music per se. College coffee music generally reflects budding music connoisseurship of many a barista. Though the stuff that gets played most often does serve a practical purpose, and in the end may be too anodyne to be something worth paying a lot of attention to. Like the americanos I'd be chugging while this played, more than serviceable, but it's not here to take center stage.

Decent rock. A big sound. Howlin’ For You was recognizable. Probably wouldn’t listen to this album again but I’d listen to more Black Keys

Best wel nice, maar niet super speciaal

Some great tracks off the hop but much like their career it falls off in the latter half. I do really enjoy their sound and the hits though.

A lot of reviews are talking about blues, and I kinda get it, but I always thought of the Black Keys as an alternative rock band. Decent album but does blend together. 3/5

I like the black keys but it's nothing particularly special.

Best Song: Everlasting Light. A great, groovy kickoff to the album. More of this would have been better. Worst Song: Howlin' For You. This might just be that the song is a victim of its own success, but I've heard this song more than enough for this lifetime. I find the buzzy quality of the guitar that goes with the singalong really grating. Overall: The album started on a high note, but ended up receding to a relatively boring, plodding middle-ground. Also, the disappointment I felt when I finally reached "Never Gonna Give You Up", only to realize it wasn't a Rick Astley cover, really soured my opinion of the album.

Definitely some bangers on here, and this is probably the least repetitive of black keys albums (who are one of the most repetitive bands ever), but a bit too overproduced for the genre

I get why The Black Keys are on this list - a good 2-piece band with some good tunes, and maybe a little "bluesier" than The White Stripes. Garage rock needs more representation on the 1001 site, more than just "black and white".

I had this album recommended to me over the summer, and now that I’ve listened to it, its just alright. I was hoping there would be a little more, but … I just didn’t catch it I guess. Maybe I’ll relisten in a little to see if I didn’t catch anything

"The Black Keys" has always struck me as a fitting name. The band eeks out as much as seems possible from their (extremely limited) premise, and they get some amazing records out of it. They're shooting for hits, and they deliver. But I can't help but feel like they're being held back by their own premise. It's what gives these songs a kind of "one-note" feeling, which is solidly in the tradition of blues, garage rock, of course. I'm always waiting for them to escape outside the prison they've put themselves in, and try something genuinely new. It's just not enough for me to give brownie points to a band that just gets all the sonics right, the recording, the sound that they have in their heads. They need to go further. The Black Keys has always felt to me like they stunted their own growth, somewhere along the way. I'll have to listen to their more recent material to see where they've gone. But yes. Monochromatic. This is the point in the review where I really give them props, though... sonically, this album is IMMACULATELY recorded. It sounds really perfect. EXACTLY how I want everything to sound. That pulls this from a high 2 to a very low 3 for me. I just should be having more fun, and I'm not really, unless I think about how phenomenal those guitars sound. 3/5

a couple okay songs, ive heard most of them before

“Next Girl” is great , “Tighten Up” was the smash single, I get bored with the Black keys for some reason.

Cool guitar riffs and drumming. Not a favorite but would listen again for sure

Enjoyable album with a great vibes, but apart from the massive singles, no particular highpoints.

This one started out great, and then the last 2/3 or so was incredibly mid. Another case of an album that could've been much better if they just trimmed the fat

Pretty good in small doses, but it gets repetitive after a while.

Propuesta original pero repetitiva en ciertos aspectos Buen disco, nada extraordinario

Listened 2/29/24. I actually own this and loved it when it came out. I haven’t listened to it for about 10 years. Sadly, this album falls flat. It doesn’t hold up. There are other black keys albums that are much better. I was looking forward to enjoying this one, but it disappointed.

Okej inte min sak men lite gött

I had this CD and sold it back. It just didn't hit me. Still feel the same way about it. But the performances are good. I felt a bit of 60s Motown in some of the choices of instrumentation. "Howlin' For You," one of the big hits, do sound more like other songs than originals. "Howlin'" sounds like "Rock 'n Roll (Part 2)" by Gary Glitter. It's that drum beat, you know? Still it has that drive... But besides those and "Sinister Brother" it was just not very memorable for me. It's listenable but I don't go running back to it. Very forgettable. Next. Key songs: "Howlin' For You," "Sinister Brother"

Kind of fun and cinematic, but also bland/homogenous and manufactured. Doesn’t feel at all “genuine.” 2.5 rounded up

Desert/blues sounding rock is not for me either, as it turns out. Bar a few tracks, the album felt a bit same-y to me. However, I enjoyed Dan’s vocal performance and the almost crooning-like sounds he made, which are not exactly typical for blues rock. 3.5/5

10’s vibe, but its more samie than I remember

I feel about this the way I feel about most Black Keys music; not bad, but not great either. The guitar playing is good, the production is great and unique, but I just can't shake the feeling that I'm listening to the audio track of like a beer or clothing commercial. I wouldn't turn it off, but it's not something I would ever seek out either. 2.5/5

Trying not to be bitter at this album for making them mainstream. It has some good jams, but some songs lack a discernible chorus and land a little flat for me. That said, overall it’s a cohesive and enjoyable listen. 3.6

It sounds all right, but it just didn't feel like it had much emotion or heart.

Initial impression wasn’t good, but it’s better on a re-listen. Decent but unspectacular, reminiscent of the White Stripes but with more soul and blues. 2.5/5, but rounding up to 3.

The thing is, I really enjoyed some Black Keys singles when I was 13/14 years old. But now that I'm 26 and have listened to the blues and blues rock for over a decade, it's hard to say this is like... good music? It's not actively bad, and I do still enjoy songs like Tighten Up, but man! Obama Era Manufactured Blues. Howlin' For You and Ten Cent Pistol have their moments!

Some times a band can jam on a groove that isn't all that catchy, yet it works. Other times, it's just a "not catchy" groove, and it very much doesn't pull you in. It's a thin line between the two, and The Black Keys walk on that line very well, rarely straying to either side. And while that's not bad, it's not all that good either. I reminds me of the letter to the seventh church in the Book of Revelation. God wound up spitting the church out because it was lukewarm, neither hot nor cold. This album is like that. It's not bad, but it's just not great either. I like the sound fine, but there are so, so many better albums.

Not the best BK album but well written.

I owned this album! This was a great album. Let see if it holds up. Everlasting Light - The song I remember the best is this one. I know this wasn’t a major hit, but my head can instantly conjure the riff and the first few lines. It is still good, but memory seems better. 3/5 Next Girl - this is still great. It keeps its edge. Even if it was in a commercial. I mean rock gods gotta eat. 4/5 Tighten Up - this on the other hand is overplayed. And a little overlong. I remember really liking this song. What happened? 2/5 Howlin’ For You - a straight forward rock’n’roll heatseeker. 4/5 She’s Long Gone - oh man where have you been all my life? Hidden away on an album I’ve only heard a 1000 times. Love this now. Go fuzz blues rock. 4/5 Black Mud - it seems like the stuff that didn’t hit me younger is absolutely killing me now. It’s an interlude though. Wish they had done more with this. 3/5 The Only One - yeah alright. I mean it’s pretty good. Goes on a bit too long. Can’t in good conscience give it lower than a 3/5, though. Too Afraid To Love You - umm, what is this? It seems criminal I can’t remember some of these songs. But not this one. This one kinda sucks. 1/5 Ten Cent Pistol - boy this one and the one before it are like death in a row. I mean they are both competent songs. So why do they suck? 1/5 Sinister Kid - I feel like I must never have gotten through this whole thing when I listen to it before. I mean let’s be honest, this is peak iTunes era prior to streaming. I probably put just the songs I liked the most on a mixed CD. So not this one, even though it’s fine. 2/5 The Go Getter - this has got a good smokey bar vibe. Like it. 3/5 I’m Not The One - it’s fine 2/5. Unknown Brother - finally a song I remember. Weird I thought this was the end of the album. It steps up from the prior songs, but not enough to escape 3/5. Never Gonna Give You Up - never gonna let you down. Never gonna say goodbye or hurt you. 2/5 These Days - this is a better ending then I remember. 3/5 Overall, more of a melancholy trip than the scorcher I remember. Still a good album, especially since it was mining timeless sounds already, so it’s hard to nail it to it’s actually time. This is one of those bands, probably a trend started with the Black Crowes, that perennially go back to the well of The Rolling Stones to mine more gold. I don’t mind. I listen to the next band that does it. Those bands come and go, and this one is already gone. I think this is hard not to compare to its follow up, the minivan album. That one was a great album. Or at least that’s how I remember it. This one though is 3/5.

Buen disco

A deceiving album. I heard Next Girl years ago and dived into the album, immediately loving the stripped back sound. Like a more bluesy, slightly cooler white stripes. But after a handful of listens I came to the conclusion not lacked depth, and almost every song got boring after a couple of sprints. Fast forward 10 years and my conclusions are exactly the same. I reckon I'd have given this 4* after 2-3 listens, as it is I'm struggling to give it much higher than a 2.5*

It's fine. Some decent songs. But it doesn't elevate into anything special. It's just sort of there. A decent listen but nothing spectacular.

Pretty solid. Felt like I was in a car commercial there for a second. - 7/10

This entire album sounds like a truck commercial 5/10

Did not blow my mind.

Good arena rock. So much bass and low end. Catchy enough

Notable tracks: Everlasting Light, Sinister Kid, Howlin’ For You

shrugs

It’s good. But the black keys can get repetitive

I like the singles but the deep tracks .. zzzz

The hits are good but the rest of the album is boring.

I remember when this album came out in high school. I played guitar and sang Jim Croce for my senior project (mediocre at best) but the girls and Ms. Bowman in my class loved it. This dude came after me and did the most mind blowing piano playing and it was completely under appreciated. Shoutout Traeton! Anyway, he loved this album when it came out, so I always think of him when I hear it. With that in mind, the album had some hits but was an easy listen. To me you could play that entire album through as background music at a bar and I would be cool with it. This was another one of those albums that had a definitive finish. As the last song faded out, I knew it was over.

I probably haven’t listened to this album from beginning to end in about a decade and it was nice to come back to it. The first four songs are a great start to the album, then the Blues Rock carries you through to the end. There are some certified jams on this album, like Everlasting Light, Tighten Up, Howlin’ for You, and Never Gonna Give You Up. The biggest flaw is that some of the songs blend together in the middle of the album and it’s hard to differentiate between them if you aren’t paying close attention. I’m juggling back and forth between a three and four, but I think I’ll stick with a three because it’s early in our 1001 albums and I know there will be even better Blues Rock albums.

Like it initially but got bored, didn’t finish.

3 0r 4

Good album with some standout songs but by the end quite repetitive.

Enjoyed it!

There are some songs I like on this album but I do find that constant distorted guitar a bit wearing by the end of the album. A bit average overall.

If we think of classic rock as a genre rather than era, this album is one of the few that makes the case that their is some continued relevance and room for new contributions to the genre in the 2010s beyond bar bands and tribute acts. Part of the early 2000s rock revival indie era, The Black Keys along with the White Stripes, BRMC, Hives etc kept trying to make garage happen again. They're my favorite of that cluster of bands, and this is both their commercial breakthrough and fullest realization of that vision. If you're going to be a guitar/drum duo, both of those parts need to be top tier, and this album pulls it off with flair. Even if you've never heard this, it feels very familiar: there's nothing super original in it, but the guitar work is a masterful and tasteful display of rock playing that's digested the rock canon - a huge range of tones (fuzzy, overdriven, bright clean, heavy, soaring, jangly, muted), rhythm parts that establish a solid groove and keep things interesting with fills and licks without being distracting or showy, some ripping solos that don't go on too long, total command of the pedal board with dialed in delays/reverb, textural tremelo, whooshing phasers/flange and a bit of wah. There's room left over to fill in with fun bass/organ parts to round out the sound. The drums are similar - nothing spectactular but perfectly in the pocket and committed to a groove. The vocals are played like a guitar on the edge of breakup, pushing into the red for a bit of scuzz around the edges of the verging on falsetto belted out impassioned delivery. Favorites: Ten Cent Pistol, Sinister Kid, Tighten Up, Black Mud

Always a distinctive sounding album with the Black Keys, good tracks, solid all round. 3.5/5

NME stans this album 3/5

Rock'n'Roll Blues with some Britpop and Soul. Nice and true feeling but too constant for my taste.

Indie, groove, smooth, retro, mid/slow, good melodies, nice solos, but basically redundant, album drags to finishing line. Not there best one fmpov

Se me ha hecho un poco largo y monótono.

Not a fan. A couple of good ones.

A drunk bar album. I mean it’s ok if you are in the culture but wtf, why is it so popular?

not to'bad

Too rocky for me, but nice!

Solid album

Pretty good album, lot of the songs sound pretty similar.

Decent. I didn’t mind listening to it, but I don’t see myself seeking it out specifically.

Decent enough garage rock, but lots of other bands do it better.

It’s easy to hate on The Black Keys. They often get compared unfavorably to The White Stripes. People say that they aren’t as interesting as The White Stripes and that this album is too long and repetitive. They also don’t like that singer’s singing. They also think there’s some cool sounding tracks with cool guitar player. They also give this a 3.

I've heard a lot of this over the years but never all together. When it's good it's really good; the first 4-5 songs are very nice, but it loses its way with songs like The Only One and Too Afraid to Love You where the bluesy groove slips and they go into warbly pop mode. Means it only gets a 3, too hit and miss.

A decent listen, but not one I'd ever seek out again, I think? White Stripes-y vibe, as Tim said, but with a bit more veneer and polish to it. That's good - it's a lot smoother than a White Stripes record - and bad - you sand off a lot of the edge. It was all fine, but nothing really great. Definition of a down the middle 3/5.

Starts off with some bangers but drags in the second half.

I liked this a lot more when it came out.

Solid but uninspiring.

Sounds good

A solid album by The Black Keys, who - in my opinion - have done even better elsewhere. The hit songs, Tighten Up and Howlin' for You, are definitely a step above the rest, and an indication of what the band is truly capable of.

Only managed to get through a few songs. I did like it but it started to go through to my head so couldn't finish it off

A strong 3, probably would've rated it higher with another listen, better than the previous album.

Started off strong but it really got a bit samey towards the end. As individual songs I'd give it a 4 but as an album it's a 3

The album was alright. I recognized a couple of songs. It went on a little too long. Some songs were good others came across as pretentious. I will round up.

Gave me flashbacks to all the commercials that used these songs. Enjoyable listen, but because the songs are pretty simple in terms of construction, they all sound pretty similar to me. Standouts: Never Gonna Give You Up, Everlasting Light

J’ai pas haïs ça, mais à la fin tout se mêle un peu ensemble en un tas homogene, faudrait que je le réécoute une deuxième fois

It was super fun. I remember this being a huge hit on the radio. Lot of fun to listen to. But not anything brilliant.

I am already a Black Keys fan. Elements of blues, rock and folk got me adding songs I already liked and adding new ones. This kind of album makes you want to explore the rest of them to find more of the same sound. 3.5

Really liked the scuffed sounding mixing on this one, I like that the instruments weren't polished. It started strong, but it lost me in a few parts and I would've preferred a ton of other vocalists on these songs than the one we got.

Decent album. Liked it a lot more when it first came out.

Solid album. This seems to be a fan favourite amongst Black Keys fans. I think it really encompasses their overall sound. Revisiting this album, I notice how it has their sound from past albums and hints at the future (Turn Blue). The album cover is clever. Tongue in cheek. Simple. This ain't my favourite Black Keys. I was late to the party. I remember hearing this album and previous albums when I worked at HMV and always enjoyed it... But it wasn't until the release of El Camino that turned me on to them. That album influenced me greatly. That raw, bluesy, honest guitar tone hits me hard. In fact it had influenced some of my own writing as well. Unexpectedly. There are some snippets and rhythm tracks on this album that I'm surprised haven't been sampled in other genres, namely hip hop. Maybe they have? I wouldn't know off the top of my head though... And I'm not really going to go out seeking. But this album is pretty tight. The first half is fantastic, then the album slows down.. Not in tempo, but in, I don't want to say quality... Because they're well written, but they just don't resonate with me as well. But then the last few tracks pick it up again for me. The album ends on a wonderfully written song called These Days that has a purposeful and beautiful chorus. It's a slower jam, with guitar slides and licks in the right places. Did you know the drummer married Michelle Branch? Now you do.

12/3/23

Good album but like groundhogs day, it’s the same song every damn time

pretty decent, el camino is better though

For the first half of the album thought it's worth 4 out of 5, but the second half is damn boring, so it gets 3 out of 5

It's the blues! I'm of course familiar with The Black Keys. I like several of the songs on this album. There more recent stuff has kind of been experimental with going into different genres and sounds, but this record is a bit of a blues explosion. Definitely front loaded with bangers. The latter half of the record tails off. 15 tracks, an hour long....not recorded for vinyl was it?

indie notbad

Some good stuff woven into the mix. Seemed like it went on longer than it had to.

Really like , howlin' for you and tighten up. Which is no surprise because they we both realised as singles which is probably why I kind of know them. I generally like the blues sound but it's a bit to generic. The only other song that I might listen to again off the album is I'm not the one.

A few real bangers but a bit of filler too

Nice nice nice. Je connaissais les plus classiques. Début de l'album > Fin de l'album.

Solid. Some good songs but dragged on a bit

Pretty generic blues rock album, white-stripesy

The Black Keys never really hit for me. I know their big hits but never really cared enough to check out their full catalog. This album justifies that feeling for me. Most of the album is pretty bland. Reminds me of The White Stripes but less inspired and over-produced? Tighten Up and Howlin' For You are the best songs on here. I didn't dislike it, wouldn't mind it being on, but I'm not gonna revisit.

Listened to this while playing Return to Dark Tower with my partner. We won! I've never really been a big fan of The Black Keys, and this album didn't really change that at all. It wasn't a bad album...and I might have been mildly into it in 2010...but it didn't much for me now.

There’s one album by the Black Keys on the list and it’s not El Camino. El Camino is better in every aspect. This one is not bad at all. It probably should have been under 45 minutes (most albums really). Favorite song: Tighten up

It starts stronger than it ends middle of the road, three star

Les Black Keys ont tenu à faire leurs petits malins avec cette pochette ridicule, c'est raté.

Not bad

There were some people in college I knew that were straight obsessed with this band. I'm not sure I've ever seen them live, though it wouldn't surprise me if someone tells me I had. Funny enough, this is their breakout album which occurs after the period I was in school. That said.. when I hear this band name no song springs into my head. It's kinda like a raw high gain/fuzz, White Stripey, Dr. Doggy/garage lo-fi sorta thing. I think I wish I had spent more time back then listening but my tastes are a bit different now. -- Hey I know the single, that one is pretty good. Review of Reviews: These reviews made me think a bit. There was a review of someone going a bit long on the point of it all, like what is the point of it, really? This album doesn't really introduce anything new to the genre they are participating in. It is banging the same drum all record. It's not a bad album, but almost entirely forgettable outside of the singles. I think that's about where my opinion falls.. Best Track: Tighten Up

i have fond memories of this bc in high school a friend of mine was trying to impress a girl and he rounded me and another friend up to play at a girl's older sister's like art event, and he made us learn a few Black Keys songs bc The Black Keys was her favorite band

I recognize some of these tunes! Probably from commercials but none the less its fun to discover them in the wild.

Is being beautiful good enough? The adoration of blues and addition soncially beautiful updates should make for a stunner of an album but I own this and never really listen to it. I plowed through it again for this project and it seems even more beautiful to me but emotionally just falls flat. I think because it is lyrically missing a connection to the present. I really love Sinister Kid now and will listent to that again but I do wish I had more love for this...

Not bad at all, Lots of stuff going on

This was ok. I don’t know why but I never gave them a real chance. The blues rock is ok but it’s not moving me

I’m kinda sick of it at this point.

Music to listen to in a car commercial, but still a good time
