Someone tell them to stop
Aimless, meandering saxophone playing that goes on nearly 80 minutes. Might have given this a 2 if it was a single LP but i was fed up after the 1st side, let alone the 4th
Had high hopes for this album, after stumbling upon a reddit post claiming this to be a remarkable album, with multiple people agreeing...only to find it was just a sonic mess. Started out as a 1 Star album, then tracks 2-3 showed some flashes of musical talent, only to wash back down to a 1 in the end. This is the worst side of Prog Rock in my mind. Should call it Regressive Rock.

OMG...this is horrible. I think we should play this on repeat for at least 24 hours to a certain shackled world leader and hope for the best. There is no way that world leader would survive and we'd all go back to being somewhat better Americans. No other word can describe this: torturous.

War doch insgesamt sehr schwach, auch wenn kleine Lichtblicke vorhanden waren.
Das war definitiv ein Album. Zwar scheiße, aber immerhin. Das ist doch keine Musik zwischendurch, einfach nur Geräusche. Wer sitzt 1970 zuhause sagt ich hab Lust auf gute Musik und legt diese Schallplatte ein?

Listened to the full ~2 hour version on Youtube and I kinda regret it. This is a classic example of just because you are talented doesn't mean your music is good. This sounds difficult and complex, but was not a good listen....ugh. There is no melody here ever, barely any words, nothing to hum along to...nothing. It kinda just hurts my head to listen to. There are moments (like the end. The wrap up is really song) but overall this just feels like noise. I won't be returning to this album again. I almost NEVER wanna listen to 15-20 minute songs. They lose me. I didn't really "like" any of the songs, but these were the best ones.... Liked Songs: "Slightly All the Time" and "Moon in June"
This wasn't entirely bad, but it certainly wasn't good. 1.5
I am definitely not a prog rock fan and this album again confirms that. The whole thing comes across as self important, self indulgent, and masturbatory. The last may not be the most apt descriptor though as, with even a little proficiency, this is certainly not a 19:11 affair. You will also most certainly be arrested for performing in public something which probably would have best stayed in the bedroom......and these guys made a record of it. There are some pockets of really interesting music in here and I dig some some the left turns, but IMO, these moments are too few and far between to save this record from itself. Next.

What in the name of god is this
Oh boy, when you open an album up and see 4 tracks with over an hour long runtime, you're either in for a great time or a miserable one. My experience was mostly the latter. This album lives somewhere in between the areas of prog rock, psychadelic rock, and jazz. It's a lot, and it's a slog if you're not into it. I hope these guys stuck to instrumental work though, the lyrics and vocals on "Moon In June" were... pretty bad. That whole song rubbed me the wrong way to be honest. I really liked the beginning of "Out-Bloody-Rageous" but then the horns came in and killed the whole vibe. There are some good instrumentals in parts, and sometimes that guitar comes chugging in with some nice distortion and I have hope but then nothing truly epic ever pans out. I have to give this 1 star. Its just not good enough in my opinion. There are just so many jarring sounds, and these guys needed to learn how to self edit their stuff down a little. It's way too much. I heard this before I died and wish I had that time back.
Really tough listen for me, and a very rare 1 star. I'd like to think I'm open to enjoying a wide range of music, and there's plenty of music I enjoy that others might say is pretentious, and I would vigorously defend it. However, at least that music has a decent sound quality. If you get past the freeform, improvised (I assume), noodly style of this album, it's horribly produced. It's really muddy and flat sounding, which makes the most listenable moments sound like a high school jazz band.

Pointless, annoying, way too long noise being called progressive Rock.
Thanks generator, I hate it. When I listen to music I am not interested in ‘the tension between complicated harmonies, extended improvisation, and the sincere desire to write catchy pop songs’. Well, they certainly failed in the last one here. This is music for boring musos - those who would rather stand at the back of a gig analysing the music than really getting in to it. Robert Wyatt’s accent is irritating (although at least there is not a great deal of it here). And I can’t even imagine this being a blast live, unlike the likes of Throbbing Gristle, Einsturzende Neubaten etc where there is very much a performance element. I imagine them standing concentrating, noodling away. No thanks. Bonus, I was motivated to do my hoovering on the second listen through

This is some of the smelliest trash I've listened to on this list. When the first song began with discordant electronic noises, I wished for the end of this double album. The instrumental parts were OK at times. I do enjoy jazz, but the electronic bits made it so unenjoyable. And when the vocals began, I missed the instrumental parts. The vocals were so terrible and out of tune! I refuse to ever listen to this disaster of an album ever again.

Look, I'm fine with experimental. I love some experimental music. But I also understand that some experiments just don't yield good results. It's ok to admit that. What baffles me is that this experiment, in which four apparently excellent musicians get high and/or drunk and muck about on their instruments (sadly including the quite awful vocals of Robert Wyatt), has made it not only out of the jazz club where it took place but was then actively and consciously pressed onto a release and shared with the world. Sold for money. And even after that series of questionable decisions, the editor(s) of this book somehow decided to go one further, and that a lot of pissing about with instruments was worthy of being deemed a *MUST* hear. And I use the term 'a lot' because it is. 75 long, hard minutes. SEVENTY-FIVE MINUTES. It took about half an hour for any discernible melody to attempt to emerge and I use the term very loosely indeed. I had high hopes as my Dad has raved about Soft Machine for years but either he had gone off them by this point, started to lose his hearing, or he was just taking the piss out of me.

Oh man I did not like this. Jazz rock makes me think of Steely Dan, which is an instant negative. Combine that with very little singing (when there was singing, it was not good) and lots of random sounds to make “music” and you get a real clunker. Ciara said it was the kind of music you hear in a record store and I think it’s spot-on. It’s pretentious, boring, and a real slog to get through. Every song had redeemable moments, but they inevitably found a way to become grating and terrible. I guess if there’s one that was listenable it would be “Slightly All the Time” but that was the jazziest so not saying much there. Just completely not for me

I rate these albums based on how much I like them and how good they make me feel (I'm not a musicologist or an expert, so it couldn't be any other way!). This album is definitely not my thing, sorry; I know it's considered by many to be a perfect 5 but, for me, I can't give it more than 1 star :-( Next :-)

I can respect what they're doing here, but god damn if this isn't just really annoying music to listen to. Every time I listen to a prog rock album punk music makes more and more sense to me.

I disliked this one more than the Pantera album from yesterday.
This was an exercise in patience - rambling, sometimes atonal, and often without melody. This was tiring and entirely unenjoyable.

The first half of Track 1 sounds like some music I heard while walking through one of those “jump scare” haunted house one year. The rest just sounds like an experimental jam session, a failed one.

I get it. I like noise. But how do you separate good noise from bad noise? I don't know, but this is not good noise. It's like 70s sitcom music with feedback and prog leanings. I hate it.
If you follow my reviews, you'll notice my zero-tolerance policy for tracks over 5 minutes in length. This egregiously violates my rules. It also sounds like a truck load of instruments was given to a toddler daycare.

Even though it’s not the worst thing ever I’m 1050 albums in and trying to have a brat summer so forgive me for not giving a 75 minute long psych jazz prog rock album much of a chance. Just don’t have it in me right now or maybe ever.

A big disappointment. Psychedelic rock from 70s, some connection with Pink Floyd, very long songs, mostly instrumental? On paper it looks incredible. But this album was just straight down awful. Boring, nauseating, uninteresting, slightly repulsing. And with the addition of vocalist on the third song, it became even worse. Why did I listen to the whole thing? Give me back my time!
Facelift: Just say No, trust me Just say No. Slightly All The Time: Could have been a decent 5 minute track, didn't survive stretching to 18. Moon In June: Last ever track with lyrics, shame that decission wasn't made before recording this. Out-Bloody-Rageous: Really 3 tracks, none interresting all irritating. Whole Album: Why???

I was looking forward to this listen as I frequently hear about Soft Machine whilst poking around Pink Floyd sites. However... This is borderline un-listenable. A truly horrible album and perhaps my least favourite in the challenge. Just a pointless mess of sounds.

This is just random noise for 78 minutes that sometimes turns into jazz (which I guess in and of itself is just random noise), broken up into four nearly twenty-minute chunks. I checked a few times to see how far I made it in and was surprised to learn each time that I was still on the first track. Fortunately, it gets a little better and more conventional after that, but not by much. As someone who isn’t even a huge fan of jazz to begin with, the attempt at it here feels far from the most interesting the genre has to offer, especially considering how long these tracks are. The third track at least adds some vocals, but they’re kind of terrible - the dude sounds like he’s battling a cold and out of breath for most of it. By the fourth track I was completely tapped out. I’m giving this thing a half-star because there’s a hint of an album buried here somewhere, but my god, was this a slog. I can’t even begin to tell you how grateful I am that Spotify has the bonus tracks on the album grayed out and unplayable. Don’t ever see myself listening to this again.

Never heared of Jazz-Rock before. Musically not bad and after tracks 1 and 2 I´m on at least 2 stars for that. But the voice on track 3 is an imposition. And why is there over 4 minutes annoying noise on track 4 before the music starts. I really don´t like to be pissed of by an album.

Truly awful. Four of the seven tracks on the album were all that YT had. Of those four, each was over 17 minutes. I did not listen to them they were not good.
So I read that this album plays a significant role in what rock ‘n’ roll was to become. I’m glad it’s over! Super hard to listen to.

Horrid
An album I have not previously listened to. This holds up to my prior feelings about prog being too inaccessible and unfocused. Track one is a cacophony that felt like a pretentious attempt to showcase how differently-thinking they are. Also what's with prog musicians and their organs? Turn it down in the mix, good lord. Really not appreciating the vocal contributions on track 3 either, I find them mumbly and a bit off key. Beyond the vocals, the lyrics were meandering and I couldn't grasp much of anything that he was trying to express. I'd probably get more meaning from the song without words altogether. Track 2, on the other hand, was actually pretty excellent. It worked as more of a jazz track, but it never lost a sense of groove and forward motion. The first fourth of track 4 is dope and I could listen to a whole album of that kind of thing. Backwards guitars and bubbling effects really putting one in the zone. Of course they decide to make the next part of the track a jumpy jazz number, which works well unto itself but why they don't just make it another song when it clearly has nothing to do with the first aspect.... Then they go back to ambient and then back to jazz then back to ambient again.. Just make them separate songs, God I have so many questions for these people. I'm glad I'm ruminating on this because I like a lot of difficult, avant garde music. I even like what many describe as boring or downright obnoxious music. What is it that I hate so deeply about these skilled and seemingly very informed musicians in the overall cannon of prog? Altogether, there's some cool moments in this album, and clearly a lot of talent. Ultimately, however, I find genres most grating when they have no restraint. Just because you have a lot of talent, and are brimming with ideas, doesn't mean you have to execute every single one of them to it's maximum degree.

Well, I'm not quite sure where to start with this one. It is certainly experimental. I'm not the biggest fan of jazz, and I just found this way too much for me - rambling all over the place, and a lot of it just noise. I've made a concerted effort to listen to all of the albums suggested on here in full, even if they are not my thing, but on this one I struggled to make it half way through the first song, and just skipped through the rest :(

At its best (Slightly All the Time) this is a mediocre contribution to the jazz fusion world of Miles, Herbie Hancock, Donald Bird, Chick Core, et al. At its worst (FaceLift) it comes across as slightly organized noise.
It's a live album, which should be enough said, right? I said, right? But this one has to be indulgent. It has to have only one song on each side of the record. How the hell am I expected to carry around a record player when I'm walking around? Maybe I'll call it a "record man" or something?
This is about as bad as it gets. Not only is it that experimental instrument noodling, but the dated nature of it locks all the instrumentation into horrible organ or weird 60's electronic noises. Glad when it was over.

This was better than I had expected. The first few minutes felt like just-another-improv-jazz album, but it evolved into a bit more of a prog-jazz wig out. It's not really my bag, but it was ok and easy on the ear.. eventually.
squonky squonky jazz sax and brass, oooooof. i barely made it through the first 10 minutes which were nails-on-chalkboard bad to hear. the album gradually became less bad to listen to, but more boring. i kept wanting to walk away from the second and third tracks to do chores. i kept checking the timestamp. i just didn't want to hear more. then the final track came on and i was into it! i really loved the layering and tones in that track ... and then the jazz horns started again and i was back to disliking it. this album seems to represent a transition moment for this band, unfortunately for me, it's between one genre i am indifferent to and another genre i dislike. i feel unfair giving this album such a low rating since i'm sure the musicianship was very high, but it's just very much something i never want to listen to again.

I started listening to us with headphones, but I could not deal with the instruments being separated. The way they were, the piano on my left ear was driving me nuts. I switched to playing it on my phone speakers and that was better Interesting the album is called third when I hated the 3rd song the most because of the vocals The other 3 songs were fine background music at times but then it would just get really disharmonious and jarring, only to go back to fine again
Wow, this was intense.. I heard these guys were something else, but not really expected this. Very King Crimson esque, but a bit crazier. It was too much for me too dig out enjoyable moments and I don’t think I’ll really connect with this band or music. 2 out of 10
Olen onnellinen siitä, ettei Spotifyssa ollut kuin puolet albumin kappaleista. Puuduttavaa tiluliluleita, ei jatkoon. Tässä meni useampi päivä, vaikka biisejä vain muutama. Mutta niiden kesto onkin 15-20 min.
Who actually likes this album? One of the worst to date by quite some way.
Starts out with just a load of sound, and continues that way for too long. "Creative", in my opinion, implies breaking the norm in a new, positively substatial way. Emphasis on positively. Jumping up and landing flat on your face to try and win the 100 meter race should not be described as a creative approach to the 100 meter, and much in the same manner, the first track of this album should not be described as creative music. There are good parts on the first track, but they are sparse and short lived. It sounds like if miles davis trained and coached The Shaggs. I'm calling it quits after the first track. If you want to hear rock jazz fusion done well, just listen to the Mahavishnu orchestra.

Ok, I can see how it influenced more modern music, perhaps...but not for me.
I love prog and I love jazz, but this was insufferable.

Hey, this sucks. That first track was so incredibly bad, that nothing on the rest of the album could redeem it from a 1 star. Second track was ok, third track had its moments, fourth, ehh, this was not a good time.
I’m glad other people enjoyed this. However, I did not. The first song drove me nuts and I could not do 18 minute songs. So I listened to a little of each song and I’m ready to move on.

Soft Machine ira donc à Baltard en compagnie des autres prétendants au titre de pire album du générateur, comme Napalm Death, Slayer, ou encore CAN.
No. The third “song” where they we red e singing really brought this down to a one for me. Maybe a 1.5 up until that point

If this is #20 on the top 40 ‘cosmic rock’ albums, does this mean: A. I have another 19 to listen to Or B. I am only half way cos if feels like I’ve done 20 already Speaking of 19 or 20. Are the tracks really that length!
Half the album isn’t even on Spotify and what’s left is entirely too long and tiresome to listen to. I really can’t stand tracks that run on longer than 5 minutes. This is a real chore.
