This was ok
Yes, I appreciate it's qualities and value, but this album is not for me.
i do not like goodbye baby. the first two songs were alright. cry to me was the better of the two. this is cute i had swans’ “people like us” queued up after this album. crazy whiplash. this was alright though, didn’t do a whole lot for me.
2+ Stars (6/15)
Varmasti hyvä laulaja mutta mitäänsanomatonta ja erittäin tylsää amerikkalaista taustamusaa. Ei tästä oikein tykkää vaikka miten yrittää. 2/5
Great soul music
Erinnert stark an Elvis. Aber nicht so meine Musik.
sounds good but realistically not gonna listen again
2/5
After seein Regnix giving this a 4-Star review I had to listen in - what a lovely, folky album with some lovely singing. Matty Groves is a banger!
Fine background music for the commute
I have a real issue with a grown man calling a woman little girl. As soon as I heard this lyric I stopped listening.
After hearing and recognizing and liking Cry to Me I had high hopes, but the rest was just meh.
I'm a sucker for 60s and 70s soul records, but this one did not spark joy or sorrow for me.
this albuum is so calming! His voice is so soothing and silky... the lyrics are great too! Soul is not usually my thing, but this is a great album. Only one thing is that the songs all sound the same, they seem to blend together. Songs i would go back to: Cry to Me If You Need Me
okish
Great voice. Can see the appeal but feel we've (I've?) moved on? Not for me. A regrettable 2*
Great voice let down by some curious choices in the arrangements and production. A lot of really thin 123 string acoustic and backing vocals that come from more of a pop background than the gospel/soul vibe that would seem to propel the songs.
It's not bad, but a little old for my taste. It's sock hop rock which is what my grandparents would have listened to in High School. It's definitely cut from the same cloth as Elvis and you can hear it. It's a 4/10
Rate 4/10
A bit bland compared to his peers
idles like it
Ikke kjipt å høre på, men vannvittig kjedelig sjanger
Never liked soul, don't like R&B, Motown for me was Notown - I like a little blues. This is what the radio sounded like when I was growing up and we were awaiting the Brits and California rockers to save us. There is some good guitar work in the background sublimated by the vocals.
Greatest hits artist
соул мне не заходит ну как не крути. сам по себе соул без электроники, трип-хопа и всех остальных к соулу примыкающих не впечатляет(
I want to likenthis album more than i do. Too much of it is bland
Glemte å følga med, men va vel greit
4/10 - There isn’t anything bad on the album, but there isn’t anything to come back to. I feel like there were a multitude of similar albums from that time period that would have been much more important to put on this list.
This sounds like the most basic early 60's album. His voice is good and the music is inoffensive but it isn't memorable. 5/10
First album where I'm like "yeah there's nothing that's really sonically interesting or fun", which means it's my first 2, as I continue to suss out how I'm gonna score things
It was fine? Musically solid but a bit slow for my tastes. I always feel a bit guilty when trying to rank things that clearly have historical gravitas. But this probably sounded a bit indistinguishable because I’m either unfamiliar with the genre or because it had so much influence on the music that followed. Probably both. Either way, clearly music of its time, but not an actively enjoyable listen for me.
Feel good soul! Perfect soundtrack to serve as nostalgic, inoffensive filler for films that baby boomers watched on dates made from 1975-2000. The fact that the first paragraph of the wikipedia article includes the fact that it was included in "1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die" is really telling — there isn't much more to say here.
Nice album, Lyrics and Instrumental are nice, however this album is not my taste in music. I found it a little boring or rather nothing special, but I no way was it bad, just not my kind of music
Suprisingly listenable for me, but wont turn me into a soulhead

Ok, but not my style. ★★
The thing about this old time rock and soul music is that it was before my time so I have no sense of how impactful this was back then. These songs sound all too familiar and not too adventurous nowadays but perhaps back then it sounded fresh. If it did sound fresh back then it doesn’t seem to have stood the test of time and I have a feeling that there were others who came before and after who did it much better. He does have a killer voice though and I wish he had some more interesting material to sing over but then again this is probably his thing and what he’s best at.
This is kinda easy listening if a little boring. If you were telling me this was quite influential, I would believe it but also I would think it's not stood the test of time as what it's influenced. I don't think I'll be chasing that again and feels kinda unremarkable now.
0/12 bekannt 4/10 Beste Songs: if you need me, won’t you give him, can’t nobody love you
There are elements of rock on some of these songs, but even adjusting for what "rock" meant in 1964 this is a disappointingly normal soul album given the title. Burke has great range, capable of smooth crooning and hitting deep notes. But his presence is a bit lacking, and you can't hear the pain in his voice like you can with the greats. His range does allow him to excell at the traditional pop-sounding "Just Out of Reach" and a couple other notably different songs, but the majority of this is well-produced and well-played soul that doesn't stand out in the genre. Little Richard was not a soul singer, and Burke has a more technically impressive voice, but if you want the energy of rock and the passion of soul, Richard had that years before this album.
Don't You Feel Like Crying? 1001 Albums Generator 181 (12/15/2025) The most interesting thing about this album is that the bassline of You Can't Love Em All is basically Stand By Me and the horn melody that comes in around 1:32 is the vocal melody of Basket Case by Green Day, so in a way this song almost plays like a mashup between a song that had just come out and a song that would exist 30 years in the future. I pretty much have nothing to say about this album. The tracks are so interchangeable that the order on Spotify is completely different than the original order. How do I know? Oh, well, the tracklisting is literally on the album cover. It's all totally passable, forgettable crooning oldies. I kind of like how on the Spotify ordering, there's a little run starting around Won't You Give Him (One More Chance) that has a few songs with some country tinges, which were kinda fun. I'm sorry for being so dismissive of a guy that was apparently a legend, but I just can't with these oldies. 2/5. Favs: Cry To Me Can't Nobody Love You Won't You Give Him (One More Chance) Least Fav: He'll Have To Go
Just kind of generic. Didn’t do anything for me…
An incredible vocal performance, from the range to the timbre… just gorgeous I loved the raw emotion in his voice. However did find the instrumentals a little lacking, backing vocals felt sort of dreary in parts. I still very much enjoyed this and its strengths cannot be looked over. I also thought some of the more country style songs were lovely with his voice. 2.5/5
They have a nice voice but music like this does nothing for me
meh
Un po' troppo slow per i miei gusti
Väitän että jossain toisessa mielentilassa tää olis voinu nousta jopa kolmoseen, mutta nyt muutama kelpo viisu ei jaksa kannatella sinne asti. Moni biisi vois hyvin soida Tarantinon leffoissa. Ehkä liian sielullista itelle tämmönen
Jätän kyllä teeskentelemättä että edes läpällä yrittäisin analysoida tällästä museopaskaa. Eihän tuohon aikaan muuta musaa tehty ku juuri tällästä geneeristä shittiä, eikä tämä erotu siitä massasta millään tasolla. 6 minuutissa levy kuunneltu läpi
Ei kyllä saa tällaisesta mitään irti…
Had some good qualities but sounded repetitive!
Quite enjoyed it, Soulfull - great voice
Trotz Burkes kraftvoller Stimme bleibt das Album hinter seinen Möglichkeiten zurück. Die Songauswahl wirkt uneinheitlich, und der emotionale Tiefgang fehlt oft.

Album ok, de soul com diu el títol.
Sounds better in the evening rather than on the way to jury duty
Album No. 0052 on my list. Never heard of Solomon Burke before, this was a completely fresh album for me. I like the mixture of rock and soul in general, but found the songs themselves not that outstanding. I find it hard to name any outstanding songs, even though on the other hand, none of them are really bad. I’ll add “Cry To Me” and “He’ll have To Go” to my playlist though. In essence: 2/5 stars.
Good album easy listen.
Definitely good music. I just don't love slow, swingy, bluesy jazz. It's not even like I didn't enjoy it, it's just not my taste. 2 outta 5
I can see why people like this, but it's not really for me. It has that oldies feel and I'm not into that. Wow, what a beautiful voice, though.
no soul in here
Not my style of music at all but fine
⭐️⭐️ 1001 ALBUMS- # 92 The Crooner of ‘Rock & Soul’ delivers powerful soul with middling arrangements. Solomon Burke was a pioneering American soul singer and preacher, often referred to as the “King of Rock ‘n’ Soul.” He was one of the key figures in shaping soul music in the 1960s, blending elements of gospel, R&B, country, and rock into his music with a deeply emotional and powerful vocal delivery. Burke’s voice is commanding, passionate, and utterly sincere. He could preach over a beat, cry out with heartbreak, or soothe with tenderness — often within the same song. His gospel roots are front and center, but he adapts them effortlessly to secular material. This album doesn’t play like a typical studio LP. It’s a compilation of Burke’s hit singles and key tracks from his early Atlantic years, giving it the feel of a greatest hits record — however lack the cohesiveness of a complete album. 🎧 Classic Track: Cry To Me 🎧 Deep Cut Gem: Won’t You Give Him (One More Chance) 🎧 Personal Favorite: He’ll Have To Go 🚫 Skip Track: You’re Good For Me Themes range from heartache and longing to strength and survival. While the lyrics are mostly straightforward, Burke’s delivery gives them weight. Produced by Bert Berns, the album features the classic Atlantic Records sound: punchy horns, snappy drums, and smooth backing vocals. The arrangements are tight but never overpowering — always leaving space for Burke to shine. 🖼️ Album Artwork: 60’s run of the mill Rock ’n Soul was released not as a thematic studio album, but a strategic compilation of singles, meant to solidify his image and commercial position. This matters because the album, despite its title, isn’t cohesive in the way landmark soul albums would later become. It’s a singles collection masquerading as an LP, and while the quality is high, it lacks narrative flow. Burke leans heavily on melodrama in some tracks. For listeners not attuned to gospel’s emotional expressiveness, it can feel overwrought. His range — while powerful — is occasionally restrained by arrangements that aim more for radio accessibility than vocal exploration. There’s a lack of sonic diversity across the album. The tempos and arrangements stick to a safe midrange. Compared to what Marvin Gaye or James Brown would be doing just a few years later, this feels static. The production, while clean, doesn’t challenge Burke or the listener — it serves the songs but rarely elevates them.
It was fine, nothing special. Solomon has a great voice, but the instrumentation is somewhat generic in my opinion. No track really stood out to me. Fav track: "Cry to me" Not a bad album, just kinda boring. 2/5
Kunne hørt men blir for typisk og litt kjedelig.
beautiful voice but the album is too boring for me
His voice is good, but as a whole this album is kinda samey. Favorite songs were Cry To Me and Can’t Nobody Love You
It was ok, but I wasn’t feeling it as much as I’d hoped.
I'm shocked that I hadnt heard of Solomon Burke before this listen. He has such a great voice. The album itself is mostly standard early 60's soul and ballads. I was also struck by the session musicians on the record, especially the guitar player. They really rip and help to elevate the album. Ultimately, it's a bit "standard." I don't think that ill listen to the whole album again, but all in there are definitely some great tracks that I'll seek out again. Notable tracks: Cry to Me, Won't You Give Him (One More Chance)
Nada demais. Voz legal, arranjos regulares, o que se espera. Entra por um ouvido e sai pelo outro, mas entendo sua inclusão na lista, e imagino que na época esse disco tenha agradado muita gente. Não envelheceu tão bem. 2/5
The fast songs are catchy. The rest is trite.
Edit... I listened to an expanded collection so a couple of my fav tracks should not have been included here. Lowering to two stars based on that. Old school early rock 'n roll soul. Be Bop Grandma made me smile so wide. Arrangements represented the era, his voice & range were easy to listen, I can imagine the background singers dancing along. And that brass bass/sousa on some tracks was just yes. I recall Cry To Me from Dirty Dancing. Listened before? N Saved tracks? A couple Favorite tracks? Be Bop Grandma, Just Out of Reach of My Two Empty Arms, Cry to Me, ⭐⭐⭐ Liked it, saved several tracks
Not really my thing but it was relaxing
2.5
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ sounds like any other soul album, it made me feel a bit sleepy honestly -- boring.
I had previously heard of Solomon Burke but was not familiar with his music. I was disappointed in this album. From the title, I was hoping for more of a rock and roll or soul sound, but this is something else. There's some Spanish guitar, brass and strings, and background singers that I wouldn't associate with either rock and roll or soul. There wasn't anything wrong with this, but I didn't enjoy it and would not listen again.
Burke’s importance in the history of soul music is without question, but the soul is mostly absent here. The songs lack an energy and intensity that the genre itself practically demands. Redundant and uninspired arrangements are the main culprit, but Burke’s effort does little to pick up the slack. Nothing on the album warrants repeated listening.
Shaking my head This isn't bad, but why is it on the list. What makes it so special I have to listen to it? I'm sure dude had his fans, but it's just kind of there, and at times, not very good. 1.8 rounded up to 2.
Certainly not unpleasant, just a bit stuck in time
unlucky that this had to come after aretha franklin. also, not a huge fan of this type of soul. not a bad album per se, but for sure outside of my taste.
Great voice with an impressive range. Kind of a bummer of an album, though. 2.5 stars. I didn't hate it, but the criterion I've been going by is how many tracks I saved in my library, and I saved none. Listened before? N Saved to library? N Favorite track(s): N/A
For better or worse, a collection of true golden oldies. To me, it felt like I'd already been listening for 30 minutes by the time I got to the sixth song, and I checked to find I was only halfway through the album, which has a total runtime of 34 minutes. I should clarify that none of it is bad. It's just old and sounds old and feels old and all is slow and just not exciting at all.
Perfectly servicable. Burke clearly has an excellent voice but there wasn't anything here that'd keep me coming back.
Geiles Album hört sich aber alles sehr gleich an. Trotzdem viel soul zum runterkommen.
boring soul
I feel like I just heard the same song 12 times in a row
I feel like I've already listened to this album like 10 times
Diner music. Enjoyable enough when it’s just one of these songs, or in the right atmosphere, but kinda samey and tough to enjoy in 2025.
Al eens geluisterd. Redelijk oke, maar niet super boeiend
Nice classic rock and roll with a voice full of soul - the first few tracks really stand out to me, very listenable - the middle / last chunk kinda blended together to me - I'd give it a 2.5 / 5 if I could.
I dunno, it was probably good at the time. Hard to hold up for 60 years.
Not for me. Probably too 60s.
It's fine. It's a good soul (or Proto-Soul?) album from 64. It has a lot of the "sameness" throughout the album as a lot of these early releases did. I enjoyed it quite a bit, but it didn't really grab me as much as Sam Cooke's live album, or Isaac Hayes' debut did. 2
Meh
Probably could enjoy a bit more if it was the type of music that I listen to.
🐣🤷🏻♂️
Tältä aikakaudelta on kyllä parempaakin kuin tämä
It was okay. It was good, but not my thing to be honest. I enjoyed it, it's good music, but nothing which says great music.
Best song: Cry to Me Worst song: Won't You Give Him (One More Chance) Added: 4/12
Great start but quickly turns to mediocrity
This starts off strong with the classic “Cry to Me” but, having reached that peak so early, I felt it quickly descended into mediocrity.
Годом ранее Битлы выпустили With THe Beatles! Не понимаю чем же этот альбом заслужил войти в список с громким названием - 1001 альбом который нужно услышать перед смертью.
-Repetitive theme -Nice chorus It's alright
Hit or miss, late-game “my baby left me and I’m so blue” songwriting. Done better by many others before it
Sunday-roast music... I mean it's pleasant enough background music at least. 2/5
Hard to be impartial with anything from the "Dirty Dancing" soundtrack. Otherwise, the rest was all new and just OK. Better than most of the last three weeks' worth of albums, but not something I'd revisit.
Soul
I’ve never heard of this. It feels like I’m looking at an album from an alternate timeline. Yes indeed, it’s Solomon Burke who is rising up the charts here faster than a speeding bullet. Move on over Patti Dervitz and Patches Muldoon, it’s Burke’s time to shine. The only differences between our universe and that one are the music and of course, the ruling of the gargantuan wart hogs that have humanity under their cosmic spells. Throw on your gas mask, we’re transcending universes. Cry to Me - This was the music Frank Zappa was poking fun at on the Mothers of Invention album. I miss that album. Nah, this is fine. He has a nice voice. The vocal freak outs are pretty great. Unwillingly dragged me into the song. Just Out of Reach (Of My Two Empty Arms) - Speaking of unwilling?? Running from me?? Chains?? This would go pretty hard as a soundtrack introducing the villain of some stalker movie/show. I’m available for hire Hollywood, or Nollywood if I am truly blessed. Goodbye Baby (Baby Goodbye) - These are simple songs. They’re nice though. Good ol’ Solomon is putting the emphasis on SOUL in the horrific amalgamation of words “Rock N’ Soul.” The lyrics remain dumb, but the performance here is great. Like, this song is about going to your girlfriend’s party, TOUCHING (??) her one more time and then dumping her, because, and I quote, “I fed you candy, and you fed me dirt.” Still a banger (banger it was). If You Need Me - The boredom has returned. Nothing to write home about here. Can’t Nobody Love You - Oh my word. Don’t say little girl after all of this. Whoa he’s beefing with every singer of every love song ever. Yeah. Fuck you Ray Charles. Great singer. Some of the most questionable lyrics thus far. Someone to Love Me - This is like an engine that won’t turn over. I found I found I found listen huh I found some listen uhh yeah I uhhh. What was I talking about? You’re Good For Me - NOOOOO. If there is a phrase I never need to hear again, it’s “You’re a bad little girl.” Tragic. One of the worst ones here. Won’t You Give Him (One More Chance) - the backup singers have laid down the gauntlet. One more chance. That’s ALL he needs. He won’t say “little girl” again he swears. Hard, Ain’t it Hard - I just uhh don’t care about this. You Can’t Love ‘Em All - I wonder if this is the same street Nate Dogg referenced in seminal G-Funk epic “Regulate.” This mythical street where groups of women wish to fraternize with every singer to ever release music. Imagine a woman singing this song. Conservatives would get mad, even today. But ol Solomon? Go ahead and love them all you little scamp. Beautiful Brown Eyes - What does Ol’ Joey have to do with this. Joe, pour me another one, listen there was this girl “Did ya love her Solomon.” DONT TALK, JOEY. HOW MANY TIME DO I HAVE TO SAY, THIS IS THE SOLOMON SHOW. Now, this girl, what a girl, she had eyes. The colour? Brown. Isn’t that incredible, Joey? I’d like to raise a glass to my friend Ol’ Joey, and that girl with the normal eye colour and no other discernible features. Wherever she may be. “Can I stop holding this drink now Mr. Burke?” *Glass breaking noises* He’ll Have to Go - Yes, he will. Normally I love a good tearful ballad hating on some cheating scum, but this is a boring closer. This is the kind of album that peaks EARLY. See the highlights for reference. Where there is energy and life for a couple singles, these albums do not deviate off of the theme of obsessive love to the point where it’s so unappealing. It may be induce some eye-rolling but modern courtship and relationships have evolved leagues and eons past whatever is going on here. I found a lot of the pining to be unlikeable and manipulative, and a man can only take so much. Leave this in the alternate warthog dimension. In our quest to consume the succulent meat of the porcine overlords of the other galaxies, we will have to bring some ear plugs. 2-2.5 HIGHLIGHTS: Cry to Me, Goodbye Baby (Baby Goodbye)
Maso
Probably good for it’s time but not today
Great vocals and a few memorable tunes, most songs tended to blend together in my mind though.
Oh crap, another old timey album. I hate this. It's so boring... I hear it will be a 2/5 album. I know it's part of the music evolution and all, but I can't force myself to like this stuff.
Some old school '60s soul. Wish I liked it more, his singing voice is truly beautiful, but the songs completely blended into each other for me. Have to give it a 2 because it didn't really do much for me.
2,5
Just not my thing
Favorites: Cry to Me, You're Good for Me Not my thing by a long shot, but I can see why people would adore this type of music. I found a lot of it to be too simplistic for my tastes, and the short length of a lot of these songs leaves a lot to be desired for me. Of course, these were made in completely different times than now, but still.
slow not very fun. 2/5
I had never heard of Soloman Burke before today. I read up on him and it is stated he was the bridge between “mainstream” and “grittier” R&B. I’m not entirely sure what that means. It seems he peaked in the early 60s and while other bigger names (James Brown, Otis Redding,Sam Cooke, Aretha Franklin) excelled, his career stalled. While I really enjoyed many of these songs and his voice, I cannot say I would put him heads and tails above others. Perhaps it is a case of “you had to have been there.” All that aside, this is an enjoyable album.
Mercifully short, as this is exactly the sort of music that I despise. I hated the backing vocals, the badly-dated lyrics, the awful production, and the musical arrangements. The singer kept this from 1 star, but honestly it was close.
in one ear and out the other
I would like Solomon Burke if I enjoyed this Genre of music. I just don’t tho
This is classic early rock and roll/soul sound. It’s good/ok, but nothing that blew me away.
Didn't do much for me, but clearly great voice
Fine album. Solomon's voice is pretty good, but there wasn't much that stood out to me on Rock 'n Soul. I do have an issue with using a fade out as a way to end a song, and that particular method was definitely over-employed on this album. No artist would realistically perform a song live this way, so what's so difficult about replacing the monotonous last 15 seconds of slow fade with 4-8 measures and a cadence?
I liked the first song then got annoyed in the middle and had tuned it out by the end and didn't notice it had stopped playing
Nothing really special to me. Easy listening, good blues/soul rock.
Soul, Schnulz, 1964 -> 2
Cry To Me, naturally, is a classic. But I was disappointed by the rest of the album.
It's ok. A soul album from the 60s not a lot to talk about here it's good background music. 5/10 Favourite: None Least Favourite: You Can't Love Them All
Fine for old ballads
Unremarkable music from the 60s, enjoyable, generic
This sounds fine, but it did not stand out at all.
Not my scene
Solomon Burke er en dyktig sanger og det er kjekt å høre på ham. Instrumentalene er kliniske, uinteressante og mangler energi. Jeg ble også etter hvert lei av de konstante støttevokalistene.
Soul music and me don’t really get on. There are one or two Soul classics which I do like but as a genre I have always avoided it unless it was impossible to do so in nightclubs etc. What I have never done though is dismiss Soul artists for their musical greatness. I accept that many Soul artists are some of the best musicians that ever lived and will be remembered for all time. Solomon Burke although I don’t know much about him, surely is one of these greats. I can hear this in this album regardless of the fact that I would have preferred to have spent this time listening to the likes of Pink Floyd. The album cover is very 60’s. Made me think of the record shops in those days. At least 4 or 5 in every town but all were set out traditionally with records in artist order and a delight to spend hours searching through the LP’s. Many were like this one with the track list on the front so time could be saved not having to also look at the records rear unless you really were going to buy it. A popular song title written on the front would aid this decision to purchase or not. 2/5 18/3/25
Very dated soul music. Alright. Glad it’s over
Definitely a lot more Soul than Rock on this one. Was short enough and didn't irritate but there's not much here to get excited about. Can't remember any songs standing out. So a nailed on 2.
Nice voice, nice bit of swing and vibe, but every song is almost exactly the same. Nothing stood out at all.
Great voice and nice enough, just very dated and not my thing.
Not for me
Decent, but doesn't really float my boat
Enjoyable, simple, possibly ground-breaking, but quickly surpassed by the soul greats like Sam Cooke, Otis, and Wilson Pickett.
Ehhhh
Saai, niet boeiend, geen pakkende nummers. Verder niet verschrikkelijk om naar te luisteren.
Some good 50s soul. Very impressive voice, but songwriting and instrumentation aren't exactly outstanding to make this a great album. Best Tracks: - Cry To Me Worst Tracks: N/A Rating: 5/10
Not really aged well, it’s just fine but not very interesting to listen to.
Some of these older albums that are selected are the "sound old but also sound modern" variety ... not this one, this old. Case in point - these dudes are still calling their sexual partners "little girl" (*pukingemoji*). Also You Can't Love 'Em All is both problematic and wrong - of course you can when they all got the eyes for you like he says. 2/5
Det här är Sol. Eller Seoul kanske det heter?
I was hoping to like this more than I did--not enough soul in the soul or rock in the rock for my taste.
Nice powerful voice. But terrible songs.
Never got into Metallica
Pretty standard blues stuff. Really not much to comment on. This was fine, but boring.
A relaxing and soul album, but nothing special. Production isn't great, though it was made in the 60s.
Solomon sure has some pipes, but man, with the exception of Cry To Me, these songs are just so mind-numbingly predictable and dull. Solomon gets three stars for his performance; the songwriters get 1 star.
There's nothing outright bad about this but it all runs together and there's not really much here that makes me want to come back to it.
Jist sounds like another album from the era. Nothing special stoodnout to me.
anything not pure rock that is released from the 60s (except for sinatra) automatically gets an 3 from me and soul is boring, so there's a penalty so it's a 2
2.5
Soulful Sam Cooke vibes! Unfortunately, all the songs sound alike.
Perfectly lovely voice, fine for the background, but not for me. It just feels a bit too rehearsed, a bit too much like something you'd hear on a Fallout radio station.
A nice collection of classic RnB oldie hits. And that’s it really. As an album it lacks a bit of direction.
Wow! Middle of the road, but slightly left
A bit souly. A bit boring, A bit samey. A bit shit. A bit out of five.
Don't mind the genre. Wasn't a big fan of this though. Nothing wrong with it I don't think. I just don't associate much with it so I drift in and out of giving a shit.
I'm too smashed to review properly. 2 stars
R&B Soul, don’t care for it. Don’t care for it at all. They just find multiple ways to tell us about love and what’s not good about love and how their lover has done them right and or wrong. Someone to Love Me had some cool music happening but R&B just ain’t for me. 2 stars
Good old school soul R&B. I get why it’s on the list. A lot of this music all runs together for me and it’s hard to pick the great from average. 2.75
Once again, boring and uninteresting music for me.
This sounds very familiar, even tho I've never listened to Mr. Burke, atleast while knowing what I was hearing. This has very classic sounding rock ballads, which are filled with clichés, probably because this is where they originated from. I don't know and don't care enough to look into it. Sad to say, I found it quite boring of a album.
Too many songs sound the same. Also, I only recognized one of the songs and it's never been a favourite of mine. (He'll Have To Go) He does have a good voice but I couldn't get into the album.
It's alright but this type of music just doesn't do too much for me. I enjoyed his voice and some of the songs were fun
Fav: Cry To Me Least Fav: Won’t You Give Him (One More Chance)
Need another listen.
Think they forgot about the rock part of the title. Seemed to be entirely soul to me. Having said that it wasn't too bad. But just not thing. So 2 it is.
It was ok for that sort of thing. Better than Elvis and Shakin Stevens combined, so that’s worth 2 stars.
Forgettable and generic soul that has not aged as well as his contemporaries.
Ik vind deze iets te oud en te schel om heel veel plezier aan te beleven. Dat hele harde uithalen van oom Solomon in combinatie met z'n snerpende achtergrondkoortje vind ik niet heel prettig. Ik ga voor 2 sterren.
Not my bag
I’m sure this guy was very influential to a lot of people. But just like a lot of people who are influential, when you listen to them after hearing all the people they influenced it sounds dated. That’s how I feel about this album.
Burke has a great voice and the songs are good, but it all kinda sounds similar song to song and I can't really see that it offers anything that other contemporaries didn't offer.
Too much love, and love, and love.
Can’t say I loved it. Felt lacking in bass lol
Glemte å følga med, men va vel greit
Okay album. Nothing of real note 4/10
Pretty standard 60s soul album in my opinion 2.5
I can see why this made the list, and Burke has an incredible voice, but overall I found the album pretty flat and engaging.
Hey Solomon! Get your ass down to the studio and holler into this tin can we've wired to this wax cylinder.
The vocal production, as with many albums from the early 60s, is poor. It's impossible to ignore once you've noticed it. The quality is pretty low, and the audio peaks every single time Solomon Burke pulls out his soulful wail. And, in a rare turn of events, the backing singers are even worse than the main vocalist (for the same reason: production). It probably doesn't help that one of the higher-range backing vocalists is frequently out of tune. The overall production in this album is questionable, and it detracts noticeably from the listening experience. The lyrics are love-cliched to the point of obscurity. The album does drag a bit in terms of musical themes and styles, not really deviating from a crooning sort of soul for its 35-minute runtime. This lack of diversity was the norm for late 50s and early 60s albums in the UK and US. As another reviewer wrote, early 60s music is "like taking a trip to a forgotten era, one that’s kind of familiar, but also completely foreign. Having been released in 1964, this record is closer to the familiar than to completely foreign, but, it feels…old. Like if you could listen to music in black and white." In fact, the production makes this feel even older - like something from the 40s. It's not impressive for its time. Now for the positives. The songs, in isolation, are well-written. I imagine a lot of artists covered this guy, and the general boomer populace most likely knows a few of these tunes (possibly without knowing the guy's name). The opening track, Cry to Me, is easily the main highlight, having a fun little bass guitar-lead guitar back-and-forth as a hook. 2/5 Key tracks: Cry to Me, If You Need Me, Someone to Love Me
love to see that I know an old song or two. the album was a little to old for me. not into the feel of some of the music but the one that I did know brought back memories.
Yawn. This is really predictable 1960s soul even though to me it's lacking the latter. I read he is a preacher, I'm not surprised. Give me James Brown or Otis Redding any time, but this album is historical interest only (I think). A 2* because he sings OK and I suppose it's not bad 'in its genre'.
Was ok
Nice voice. Some good tunes. Nothing to write home about though.
Eh first song was cool … wouldn’t mind listening to at a jazz bar or something
Snore ‘n Soul 🥱😴
2/5
decent but kind of forgettable
Very repetitive. The vocals are very impressive though. Maybe I just don't get this type of music. 2/5
Solid 2.5
More rock and less soul and it might be alright.
Not too bad, but not really my thing
Favorite: You’re Good for Me Early Philadelphia soul, appreciate that in context of ‘64 this was probably pretty rockin’ and soulful but pretty forgettable against the test of time.
This was ok, but wouldn’t listen to again
Started out so strong but then you came back here due to absoluteboredom
This dude has a great voice and sound. Great rock and roll sound. The album though is very one dimensional with very little else to offer. I can see why its historically important but for me its very samey Favourite song: Cry to me Least favourite: nothing is bad but little stands out Album artwork: Standard cover
Amazing vocalist but nothing particularly interesting about the music for me
When I was a teenager a lot of my eclectic style was being helped by my dad. He listened to rock, country, pop, jazz, and a healthy dose of folk/ singer songwriter stuff. He liked some of the stuff I listened to and I liked quite a bit of the stuff he did. One day an "oldy" came on the radio and the DJ made a deal of it. My dad said "I was around when this song came out. It sucked then, and it still sucks." The song in question was not a good song, I don't even remember what it was. Then my dad added something: "Just because a song is a 'classic' or an oldy or whatever, that does not make it automatically good." When I listened to this album, as a person who likes jazz and blues and this sort of genre, I had the feeling that it was... Ok. Nothing blew me away, I never paused and said "yeah, there it is." I am sure it is fine or whatever; but that is the problem. I won't remember it specifically and I don't want to need a companion booklet to understand why it is supposed to be great.
2 1/2 Just sitä mitä paketissa luvataan
Soul n rock
I feel like it's important that I heard this and understood Burke's place in music history, but I don't see a compelling reason to come back to this.
I really liked his voice, but unfortunately, I found the songs themselves to be kind of boring.
I get that it’s important to include albums like this in the book, because the Blues (especially Blues that influenced rock and soul) is an essential genre to cover in a book like this. I don’t hate it, but it also doesn’t pull me in. I find this style of blues very…bland, uncomplicated, and uncompelling. I just find a lot of the blues very basic, and to me, this sounds extremely dated, but rarely timeless. It’s not quite soulful enough to pull at my heartstrings, but not quite hard enough to rock. And god, does it drag! It felt like it was 90 minutes of the same song, and I was only half way through. Influential, sure, but not essential. If anything, revisiting it with modern ears makes it an even harder listen, unless you love this style of early ’60s music in general, which I don’t.
It's pretty good but hard to see what distinguishes it from many other records of this genre
Bland to the point of being a bit annoying. In the right mood I wouldn't mind this on in the background, but that day is not today.
Pretty good soul music for it's time, high 2.
Honestly a bit disappointed with this one. Not sure what I was expecting, but for an early Rock and Roll album it left me wanting. The first track sets you up for a greatness that the rest of the album didn’t rise to.
Just sounds too old now. Seems good enough for a 2. Will I listen to again: 0%
classic soul album from 1964
Old black singers just wanted to fuck
I'm not familiar with this artist, should be interesting. This is some interesting 60s rock, not too dissimilar from a lot of what else was out there during this time, but it's decent. It's not particularly memorable, but it was a good listen. 2/5
Not as different as I thought it was going to be, but not bad
A poor man's Otis Redding.
Inget speciellt har väl säkert stor betydelse och så men av att bara lyssna på det såhär så hör jag inget nytt för mina öron.
The songs, other than Cry To Me, are fine. Solomon songs the hell out of them, but can't quite elevate the material to anything special.
This is super dated, very much feels like it is from the 60s. Compared to many other albums from the 60s this one doesn’t particularly stand out to me
Nothing bad about this album but nothing particularly good. Great voice, just a little boring. I had this on over coffee on a Saturday morning and my wife remarked, "What the hell is this?"
Plodding and dull throughout. He's got a decent voice but all the songs are like: 'I love my baby' 'baby come back' 'my baby ain't no good for me' 'baby I love you' Just couldn't be interested in it
The album is from before our time. Many songs sound similar with a bit too much Gospel background. A few songs were fillers. Glad to have listened, don’t need to hear it again. Doesn’t hold up to time. 1.8*s
Not bad but too many love songs. Wish Burke put some soul into another topic at least once on this album. The songs are simple and easy to listen to but not stimulating enough.
Classy soul vibes Too much singing bout love
Jag har aldrig riktigt tyckt om soul musik så därför var det inte så förvånande att detta album fick 2/5 stjärnor. Dock var Solomon Burkes röst väldigt bra men det var tempot och bakgrundsmusiken som drog ner allt. Min favoritlåt från albumet var Wont you give him (One more chance).
2/5, good album about a 5/10 but there are better Soul albums
I’ve had Five Guys one time. And I found it to be very bland and boring, especially considering the price. I felt like there were just much better places to go to get burgers and fries for a much more affordable price point. Plus I could probably make a better burger myself for cheaper. Now why am I telling this story? Because this is how this album makes me feel, and I had no other interesting way of starting this. Now I’m not saying this album is overpriced. It didn’t cost me anything. And I’m not saying I could make something better than this, because I couldn’t. But what I am saying is that this album bores me. It’s incredibly plain, like a Five Guys burger. And why would I ever give this the time of day when there are way better rock and soul albums that pushed both of those genres to new heights. I gave this one full listen purely for the list and for the experience. I have the experience now and I don’t plan on ever wasting my time with this again. It sounds mean, and I’m probably being harsher than I need to be, but I just don’t enjoy these placeholder albums that are almost entirely lackluster and could be replaced with much better, more deserving records. Like I said in yesterday’s review, this is on here, and Animals by Pink Floyd isn’t.
revolutiinized soul but obv old
Well done, but not exactly my cup of tea. There's other stuff like this I've heard that works much better for me.
Not a fan of pop/soul, so this was definitely NOT in my wheelhouse... That said, for a 1963-64 album, it was fairly well done... Solomon can clearly sing, and does a good job on every track, and I liked the diversity of sound throughout the album - even though every song was a 3-minute ditty on a similar topics - but I guess that's what songs were like back then... I guess this is on the list because I read that there were like 7 number 1 hits on this album - which is hard to fathom, but okay... Compared to most other albums, this one is going to fall well short, as it is clearly dated... However, for it's time, it was exceptionally well-done compared to most...
Song that I liked Cry to Me
Excellent vocal work too bad all of the songs were pretty boring
Old school for sure. Good vibes and sound overall, but not interested in seeking out more.
Bluesy but puts me to sleep. 2/5
A so-so collection of soul songs. His voice is fine, nothing special.
not interested in soul. though sounds good
Something for the grandkids to remember him by. All 90 of em...
Nodded off
I bet this guy was like Juice Wrld for the 60s. Would have loved to have hot head listening to this. Wont ever be listening to it again though, respectfully
Blues and shit it was very calm 2.5/5
Short. Other than that I don't have many positive things to say about this album
Not my style of music
Never heard of him. Overall pretty good.
fine
Puuh.
A bit old fashioned
It’s pleasant easy listening, but not terribly stand out to me. I wouldn’t turn it off, but I don’t think I would seek it out specifically.
Classic soul vibe with gospel undertones. Really liked a couple of songs
Strong vocals on a very soulful album. Not sure I heard the "rock" that's mentioned in the title though. 2
It's alright, not a huge fan honestly
I feel so bad for rating this 2 stars. Maybe I should hear it again. Couldn't really pick a favorite song that stood out to me. I was stressed while listening to it, running to catch a bus.
This was personally unappealing to me. Not a Soul guy. Didn't recognize any of the tracks.
2.0. Very smooth
Blues and Soul. Slow. 2/5
Not my kind of music, sadly. I reckon the guy sings great and probably is a great songwriter and musician but I just don't like it. That's why it's not a one
No one is going to listen to a Soul record and say “That was terrible”. That’s true for Solomon Burke. It’s fine, it’s nice. It’s just so slow, it almost reminds me of Christmas music 5.0/10
Nice soul/funk album for background listening, but that’s all. Nothing really jumped out for me. Suppose not my genre. 2/5.
I kind of neglected this album. I only listened to the first half. So, this isn't a fully informed rating. I like Solomon's voice, but the backing vocals sound a little too old timey to me.
Dad's music. Its good early morning music. I enjoyed it but im not sure id listen again. 2-3 stars.
Meh, a more boring Sam Cooke
Perus paskaa xm4:set kaatosade testattu, tuntuu ettei saa ykköstä antaa tästä..
Vocally spot on. Sweet voice, pitch perfect. Musically, tight and melodic. What lets this album down is there is almost no veriation in the tracks. Because of this I found it to be a dull album.
Not my type of music
A little dated for me
1/5 - never listening again 2/5 - its decent but not for me 3/5 - would listen again 4/5 - I love it 5/5 - going in my playlist Cry to me 2/5 Just out of reach 3/5 Goodbye baby 3/5 If you need me 5/5 Cant nobody love you 2/5 Someone to love me 2/5 Youre good for me 1/5 Wont you give him 2/5 Hard, aint it hard 2/5 You cant love them all 3/5 Beautiful brown eyes 2/5 He'll have to go 2/5 Album: 2.1/5
Ok but didn’t grab me
Not bad, some fun tracks but ultimately not for me. Cry to meeeee
Voice is beautiful but the album didn’t catch my attention. Listen again: no Purchase for my collection: no Favourite Song: none stick out to me
Nice voice, but quite flat and monotonous.
# 62 : When your only claim to fame is that you are in this list… If You Need Me
Inoffensive, ultimately ended up as background music.
Of it’s time and a cover of a Jim Reeves song says it all. My parents may have liked because there wasn’t’t much else around prior to the Beatles explosion.
Great voice and great sound but it’s a covers album. I get how for some of the history of music that’s how it worked but it’s easy to pick any song out and pick a different version that resonates.
A pleasant surprise but not consistent enough throughout.
Periaatteessa laadukasta kategoriassa 60-luvun alkupuoliskon levykokonaisuudet, mutta erityisesti B-puolella kuorotaustojen, folk-kokeilujen ja matalarimaisen tyytymisen varjostamaa. Olenko kuullut riittävästi kuunnellakseni uudelleen? Ehkä en - etsisin suosiolla kokoelman käsiini.
This is an exceedingly rare soul miss for me. The blend of vocals never really reach a powerful climax for me, which is what I'm always looking for in soul music. The backing instrumentalists are also deprecated too much for me, giving them no chance to overcome my perceived shortcomings with the singing. Favorite track: Beautiful Brown Eyes
Meh. Gets a bit bland during the middle and doesn't pick up again. Old blues rock, I find very good but difficult to enjoy a while album.
First listen Saved 3/12 Top track: Can't Nobody Love You
This album was fine! Not my favorite genre, but incredible talent. A pleasant listen, but not something I’ll go back to.
It was fine enough, just boring. It's a high 2. I don't care enough about it to give it a 3. My favourite song was Just Out Of Reach, I guess.
track 1 - unreal voice, actually really enjoyed this song. voice is just amazing, shame to hear idles covered it track 2 - quite different, once again an enjoyable listen track 3 - more focus on vocals and backings, not as much my thing but still a nice listen. voice still shines through excellently track 4&5 - was working at this point so barely managed to listen to these, felt similar track 6 - more focused on the singers voice again, like. track 7 - albums dragging a bit now idk track 8 - interesting guitar, not what i was expecting. track 9 - quite nice this, enjoyable. very bluesy track 10 - forgettable track 11 - forgettable track 12 - lovely little closer of a track
track 1 - can't listen to this without thinking of the idles cover but was a great song track 2 - didn't do too much for me track 3 - didn't do much for me either track 4 - love this one, Solomon burke has a great voice track 5 - really not my sort of thing but his voice is fantastic track 6 - my favourite so far, loved that track 7 - decent this one track 8 - least favourite this one I think track 9 - okay but tracks are all starting to blend into each other at this point track 10 - didn't even realise a new track had started here track 11 - good background listening track 12 - not bad but once again feels like background listening and hard to focus in overall Burke has a great voice but this isn't my sort of thing, works nicely as background listening but that's as far as this goes for me
Probably wouldn’t listen again, very soulful but not my thing
DNF, every song sounds the same halfway through.
It's pretty good for early soul. Nice groove and voice with gospel back vocals, but I found it really repetitive. There's some diversity here, utilizing strings, horns, Samba beats, and a Latin-sounding guitar, but this just prevented me from being bored the whole way through. Favorites: Cry to Me, You're Good for Me, Won't You Give Him
It was decent. Nothing really special about it and it really dragged on for WHOLE album
Good singing that’s really close to Otis Redding in style but I’ll just listen to Otis Redding if I want that kinda sound. Kinda disappointing cuz I really like early RnB and soul like Redding and Sam Cooke but it didn’t bring anything new to the table and both of those two have better production and singing. Has a few songs I’ll come back to but won’t ever listen to it all again. Super light 3 if I give it that. Buddy Holly’s at least had its biggest hit be his own song too which helped that one’s significance. 👍: cry to me
Man just as boring as buddy holly… Cant nobody love you is good tho
I’m willing to admit this score could be a result of 50s/early 60s fatigue because two days in a row is pretty brutal. Solomon Burke has a real smooth tone, so I’ll give him his props there. But there really wasn’t much that stood out here. Honestly, old music bias aside, I think this just wasn’t that strong an album, even for the genre/time. I’m willing to give this a 2 just because it wasn’t as outright offensive as my 1’s. I didn’t necessarily dislike anything I heard but I can promise you none of this will stick with me. This is one of the first that I’m really questioning its place on this list. Best: If you need me (this song grew on me and kinda goes hard) MMM (yikes): Honestly none. Just spent some time searching for this and couldn’t find anything memorable. I truly don’t think I’ll remember any of these Melodies tomorrow so doing a MMM would be dishonest.
If this were a Harry Potter movie, it'd be The Chamber of Secrets. It's a great genre, and the sound is good. But, it just isn't as good as the other albums from this era and style.
inoffensive, unmemorable background music
very reto and chill. 3? pretty boring tho.
Meh, stereotypical 60's music
