Reviews (page 10 of 12)
About what you’d except from an early 60s album. Lots of simple love songs with cute little melodies and whatnot. I felt there was more pop than rock or soul on the record which was a letdown. 5/10
This felt like a chore to listen to if I'm going to be honest. I mean, sure, Solomon's singing on here doesn't sound bad, the actual music does sound pretty good. My concern here is that there really isn't anything interesting going for it, just another 1960s Soul album that had some decently charting singles. Rock 'n Soul would probably sound better as background noise or something among those lines.
hell yeah all classic songs in a wonderful style. the performance is what makes this standout. best tracks: goodbye baby (baby goodbye), you can't love them all, cry to me
So-so,
liked this a lot actually, lovely stuff
Enjoyed it, nothing super noteworthy imo
Genres: Soul Formed: ? in 1955? Run time: 12 songs, 35 min, 4 sec The title stems from Burke's title as the "King of Rock 'n' Soul". The singer helped shape the sound of rhythm and blues, he was one of the founding fathers of soul music, and was a key figure bridging R&B and soul. The album resulted in seven top 100 Billboard hits. Track 1, “Cry to Me” has over 142M plays on Spotify, with another four tracks exceeding 1M plays. The remaining seven tracks have over 200k plays. He has a velvety soft voice. Presumably as a result of his gospel background, all the lyrics are clean. Many of the songs are about the love of a girl/woman. It’s not a profound album but the subject matter is pertinent to most of us. The songs are pleasant and easy to listen (and relate) to. It is not necessarily my taste in music but it was enjoyable to listen to. Listen Again?: Probably not My Rating: ***
Nice soul album, pleasant but didn't grab me. Not really many thoughts on it, tbh.
As has been well documented, I'm a big fan of soul music like this. While this wasn't the best of this genre I've heard from this list and wasn't incredibly memorable, I still enjoyed it nonetheless. High 3
I wasn’t too thrilled when I got this and frank sinatra back to back, but I enjoyed this one a bit more because each song was a little unique
5/10
really old school similar to Otis Redding
Some great classics on here. Lovely mellow tunes and fab voice.. Pleasant listening after yesterday’s headf***! Great just to have on in the background.
This was cool and was my first exposure to Burke outside of hearing "Cry to Me" in Dirty Dancing. Burke's a damned good singer with a great range, and I dig the style of music on this album. But at the same time, I can hear why his songs haven't quite stood the test of time like some of the other soul singers of his era. The songwriting is often lackluster, and even when the writing's good, the arrangements don't quite hit the mark (though "Won't You Give Him (One More Chance)" was interesting. I think he needed a great producer to bring out the best in him, like Aretha had in Jerry Wexler or Al Green had in Willie Mitchell. "Cry to Me" is the exception where everything clicks, so no wonder that one has had a life outside of this album. But overall, cool stuff.
I didn't give this the attention it deserves - work shit, innit. From what I heard, it sounds like a monument of an album. The subtle horns on He'll Have to Go add to the emotion of the song. Three stars on a half-hearted first listen. It's probably worth at least one more when I get to grips with the album.
Nice oldies album, relaxing and romantic at the same time. Was a nice listen.
It was alright but another I doubt I'll ever revisit.
I'd rather be listening to Otis
old school. s écoute bien
Nice, pleasant, soulful, but purely in a background music kind of way. It left me a little bored by the end. A nice accompaniment in an old-timey diner or something though. Favourite: Won't You Give Him (One More Chance)
Again - the creepiness of 60s teeny bopping songs - pleasant to listen to but so terrible so many years after the realization of what is actually being said and thought. There are better albums that are worth apoligisim but this can pass.
A perfectly fine soul/rock early RnB album by Solomon Burke. Generally not my cup of tea, however I can appreciate how albums like this allowed us to progress to both the rock and RnB music of today. His quote sums it up perfectly - "without soul, there'd be no rock, and without rock, there'd be no soul." Best: If You Need Me Worst: Hard, Ain't It Hard
lovely classic stuff, great sound, songs sound very distinct from each other but all good 3.5
Great voice, fun listen. Cry to Me is a total classic. the songs are short and move right along, although tbh they are a bit samey by the end; the recording quality isn't doing the music any favors on that front, but also the backing vocals level the songs out regardless of how expressive Solomon's delivery can be. 3.5
Great vocals and a overall easy listen, not gonna be one of my go to oldies
Alright I guess
- Loving these 35 minute albums - Decent soul vibes, a fun listen - Favorite songs: Someone to Love Me
- Great singer and storyteller - Thought the first song was the best and then I was a little disappointed with the rest
It’s so unfortunate here that Solomon Burke couldn’t have a stronger backing here because his voice is like Mama’s homemade Pecan Pie on a cold November evening. This is the kind of soul singing that warms your heart and makes your toes tingle. But then you get the backing vocals that sound like my mother yelling at me to take out the trash, backing music that can be found at any local coffee shop, and song composition that could have been done by my tone-deaf friend. And of course, you’ll always struggle when you front load an album with the best songs.
Not quite standing out to me but I would never complain if this album is playing
Good
Natuurlijk.
Sommige nummers klinken ietwat gedateerd, zoals Just Out of Reach en He'll Have to Go, met zijn Elvis-achtige stem.
Awesome voice, smooth yet sparky sound. Things do get kinda repetitive near the end, particularly with the backup singers who are the most gratingly dated element here (though I do still like them sometimes). Not the most substantial album but a nice listen. Best song: If You Need Me
Criminally underrated.
This is fine for what it is. Not a bad listen but likely not something I'll come back to.
pretty generic sounding for the 60s but that’s not a bad thing! very evident that it was made with a lot of heart too which was cool to listen to
Nice background music
Lives up to the name, enjoyable but not really anything I'll go back to
Lækkert. Cry To Me er en klassiker. God længde.
No surprises here. Exactly what it says on the tin. Soulful, rock n roll. But not really my cup of tea.
Slow but good blend of soul into early rock
Great voice and tone, classic 60s rock style. I've never heard of this artist or any of his songs, I'm surprised he's not more famous. I can hear the influences on other acts. Overall a good album
It's not a bad record by any means, it just didn't resonate with me.
Decent, some good songs
Smooth listening. Great songwriting. Hell of a voice and it just makes me feel good.
Hugely problematic lyrics sung beautifully and soulfully. Easy on the ears but not for me
3/4
It seems like until the Beatles came around (I'm not just attributing this to them) a focus on the voice was all that mattered, and it leads to a lot of songs from the era to sound impressive vocally, but missing something deeper. It is easy listening, certainly, but it's extremely surface level. I can't necessarily blame the album for that, but it doesn't change how I feel about it in the (currently) modern age. Another down the middle album with this one.
Album is all a bit "one note", albeit a talented "note" at that. Soulful and crisp. A monument of its time.
impressive vocal register, pretty okay album
A strong 3 star album.
Solomon Burke sounds great, but this music doesn't move me.
Very listenable early sixties 'classic soul' - perhaps he doesn't touch the desperation or ecstacy that Sam Cooke or Otis Redding can reach, he seems quite a grounded chap. Full marks for putting forward his worldview that not every woman can be loved, as he is only one man.
Love some jazz
3.5/5 The title of the album says it all, Rock ‘N Soul, a great combination of the both genres. First time listening to Solomon Burke, but he is great! Wouldn’t mind to hear more from him. Favourite songs: - Cry to me - You can’t love em all
The Mrs. walked in on the first song and thought it was the Dirty Dancing soundtrack. Ah, 1964. The last song encapsulates my problems with songs of this era: the backup singer sound so... bored. It just makes the piece itself sound boring and old. It made the whole thing end with a bad taste in my mouth. I know it was a cover, but it just didn't feel right. I was hoping for something peppier, but of course... leave them with a slow love song, that's what you did with albums back there. Man, so formulaic. I could hear a bit of where John Fogerty got his vocal sounding from, which is interesting. But still, besides that opening song, it's not something I will revisit . It's a 3, but more like a 2.5, rounded up.
Very good, hits the soul
This is a solid soul R&B album. Burke has a splendid voice that can hit a wide range of notes and brings a lot of emotion. The album is pretty quintessential soul where it’s about love songs in most situations. There’s not much bad about this album. The biggest drawback is the age of it and finding the mood to listen to it. But this is worth revisiting. 6.5/10
Burke ends up sounding dated in toto, but the flourishes behind the vocals make a convincing case for the titular genre. The album might mean more to a connoisseur, at which point one would expect it to appear as less of a deep cut.
One of my first full albums of soul rock, huge fan in general, but i respect the genre though. Not really matching my mood today, but happy to explore solomon burke Wont you give him - is my favourite, its light enough to add to a playlist, but overall strong soul album You can tell the album is era appropriate; specifically the guitar and piani riffs and backup singers. Very cool!
It was alright.
6/10. Seems like the sort of thing I'd like, but also listening to this after lunch kinda put me to sleep, so the jury is still out.
This was nice, really easy listening album. Some of the songs maybe felt a little too similar but I think that’s to be expected of albums from the 60s and earlier. 3.5/5
Chill as it gets.
Good strong early soul
Pretty nice album, love those soul backing vocals
Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: Yeah it’s a charming one full of character and brings out the best of this genre for me so far! Favourite song: Track 3 - Goodbye Baby (Baby Goodbye)
Enjoyed it. Probably not one I’ll listen to again like but was decent
Some mighty fine easy listening. First track is class. Think it really helped i was listening to this in winter, feel the vibe for this stuff more in this season for some reason. Reminded me of the mafia 2 soundtrack which is quality.
Nice easy listen. I proper enjoyed some songs, especially ‘Won’t you Give Him One More Chance’
3/5
The passionate "Can't Nobody Love You" and humorous "You Can't Love em All" stand out from the batch of good but slightly bland songs. Specifically, Solomon's voice is exceptional, but the back-up singers did nothing for me on most of the songs. I award Solomon three sweethearts to love, hopefully they'll last him the length of this album. 🧍♀️🧍♀️🧍♀️
blueprint for modern r&b and soul. sounds christmassy
Nive voice and some nice tunes. As an album, a bit monotonous - especially with the backing vocals.
"I'm the king of rock 'n roll!" declares archduke Franz Ferdinand as his driver pulls into an alley by a sandwich shop in Sarajevo. This album feels like an anachronism. It's good, certainly. Burke writes great songs that bring rock and soul together in a seamless fusion. However, this album feels like the end of a genre and not the beginning of it. A lot of this stuff sounds like Sam Cooke, but not as good. It's a fine album overall, but it's hard to understand why it makes the list. It's not particularly groundbreaking, nor is it a particularly iconic example of this type of music. This genre was buried by the British Invasion shortly after it was released, and that's fine by me, because listening to this album, it feels like it had run it's course 3/5
very of its time
Not bad, kind of classic but there arent any top 10 tracks or anything. 3/5
Had Fats Domino last week, this one survived the times better. Yes, music is to sweet for me but his voice is utterly beautiful and the music pleasant.
Good album.
Solomon Burke's Rock 'N Soul did not surprise or shatter any expectations but it's a solid entry in his catalogue.
Another album of songs that I have heard before but didn't know who sang them!
Pretty good. But dated and not really my kind of music. It's rare that I'd ever be in the mood to say, "hey I should put on some Solomon Burke."
Clair et concis
"Without soul, there'd be no rock, and without rock, there'd be no soul."
This album starts off great with Cry To Me. Even though it’s a slower pace, like the rest of the album, it’s got energy. I feel the soul. Nothing else on the album meets the level of Cry To Me, which is disappointing. It’s difficult to understand how seven top 100 hits are on this album.
Not offensive, but not really exciting either. 2.5/5
Prefs: Goodbye Baby (Baby Goodbye), Cry To Me, Just Out of Reach, You Can't Love Them All, Beautiful Brown Eyes Moins pref: You're Good For Me
I’ve never listened to anything by Burke other than his 2002 release Don’t Give Up On Me - so traveling back almost 40 years from that is quite interesting. Solomon Burke is a powerful singer and delivers a great performance on this record. But while there are no bad tracks nothing ever sticks out as truly extraordinary either. I don’t think that this would have been as out of the ordinary for 1964 as the person placing this album in this list would like us to believe. But nevertheless I feel entertained by Burke’s company.
Excellent for the genre and era. 3/5
I think I might not be giving this album enough credit, there was a lot of really great songs on here, and the runtime was pretty good for what this style was going for. I'd be curious to listen to some other records from him. 3.5/5
Sobresale Cry To Me y You´re Good For Me. 3 estrellas.
Its nice, 3
Not bad
Quite enjoyable
I liked this but wasn't blown away. My favourite song was the one that sounded like happiness is a warm gun by the Beatles
A classic with a great hit but the album was a bit too poetic simp for me, don't get me wrong would still listen but not on repeat.
Nice soulalbum, maar niet overweldigend
Bit boring for my taste. Im not a big soul fan
I like Solomon's voice. It has the perfect soul sound. Not a ton of hits coming off of this though.
Cry To Me was a pretty good song, and given my long break from this, was a good song to come back to. Just Out Of Reach was a bit calmer, would make good background music as opposed to listening to it. Goodbye Baby was again good background music. If You Need Me was a bit more of a listening song than the previous two, which were better background noise. Can’t Nobody Love You was more of the same style, it was good, just nothing new to add. Someone To Love Me was the same, definitely from the 60s. You’re Good For Me was more of the same stuff on the album, nothing jumps out. Won’t You Give Him was a bit different than other songs so won’t complain Hard, Ain’t It Hard was bit more “country” opposed to the rest of the album, so again different. You Can’t Love Em All again really encapsulates that 60s sound, and was a nice throwback. Beautiful Brown Eyes again was good background music. He’ll Have A Go reminded me of Elvis, and was a nice song to close the album off. Overall, the album was good background music, nothing blew me away, but I didn’t dislike anything, would make good restaurant music. 3/5
C'est sympathique. L'enregistrement est bon. J'aime bien.
More Soul than Rock by modern standards but very easy listening whilst working.
I enjoy Cry to Me, I'm pretty sure I first heard it from the movie Dirty Dancing. The album is from the 60's and I prefer this sound of the 60's compared to other artists and songs of that era. Overall, good sound and has good lyrics.
Me gustó, un lenguaje que entiendo mejor.
"Rock 'N Soul" is exactly what it sounds. A rock-'n'-roll soul album. For some reason, the tracks are shuffled in Spotify. I don't know why, and I haven't realized it when I listened. But began with the amazing "Cry to Me". I love the bluesy energy with the smoothness of soul in Burke's personality, especially in this track. Unfortunately, the rest of the album lacks the pure rock-'n'-soul energy of that track. A few tracks are pretty fine, but overall, it felt like generic '60s pop riff offs. I guess it's a must listen since it's the bridge between soul and rock-'n'-roll. But much of the vibes here can easily be blown away by its peers.
The album was good, it reminds me of a lot of similar music from that time. I don't know if this one influenced others or was influenced by others, probably a little bit of both.
I appreciated this for his great voice, the music history relevance, inventiveness and for the song "You're Good For Me" But in the end all song are pretty much turning into a blur and after 3 listens, nothing really sticks, stands out or made really much impression
Kind of samey, but a fun album
Old style but good
Good ol' soul. Burke has a voice that could bring the house down, and he damn well knows how to use it. That's passion, folks. Raw, unbridled passion is what makes these simple souls songs so great in Burke's voice.
Nice slow chill out music. Enjoyed this listen.
Classic 60s soul.
It was a pleasant enough listen; good background music but I think there are better versions of some of the tracks. I’m trying to be less middle of the road in my scoring but2 would be harsh, so another average 3*
Great soulful voice. Super production. Classy. Lost a bit of interest towards the end. No classics but solid throughout.
Just not my style though I can recognize the artistry.
Having something of a soft spot for 60's music this listen was made even better with how good this album was. No songs really stood out to me, but every one of them was as good as the last. 58/100 gecs
A pleasant listen
Great voice but wasn't a fan of the music.
It's a bit like listening to one of the best easy listening stations. Very smooth.
Sequencia clássica de soul.
Like Solomon better than Kanye
I like this one! Never heard of Solomon Burke, he's proclaimed the king of rock and soul (I don't know how that holds up, is that a name he gave himself?). He's got a fantastic voice and the songs work very well in this style. I totally understand the genre branding because it's right between those two. Album got a little redundant, but still an enjoyable listen regardless. Favorite tracks: Goodbye Baby, Won't You Give Him, If You Need Me. Album art: Very basic, but the bold blocking text and the slightly askew image elevate it just a bit. Simple, but I like it. 3.5/5
Se deja escuchar.
Fabulous album from one of the greatest soul voices of all time. Several of these songs are pure classics, with "Cry to Me" being the standout track. It gets a little weak on much of the back half of the album, but on balance this is a really lovely collection of songs. I enjoyed it. Fave Songs: Cry to Me, If You Need Me, Can't Nobody Love You, Someone to Love Me, He'll Have to Go
Solid soul/rock album.
Good for history. Huge for its time, I'm sure, but it doesn't really engage me in 2022 (for example the way Sam Cooke's live album did)
"Sam brought you cake and ice cream, and he called you cherry pie. Ray Charles called you his sunshine, but you never mind. I ain't let nobody let love you, like I'm loving you right now. 'Cause they don't know how, to love you like I do...." Favorites: Cry to Me, Goodbye Baby (Baby Goodbye), Can't Nobody Love You, Hard, Ain't It Hard, You Can't Love 'Em All, Beautiful Brown Eyes, He'll Have to Go.
Really enjoyed it, for a change of pace
Great voice, bit too much of a similar thing going on to make it a stand out album though
Great voice! Cry To Me is great, but then after that opener, the rest of the album is alright, just felt a little lacklustre, (with the exception of Can't Nobody Love You, that's a good 'un).
none
Jj
Soporific. Probably also laxative.
Few songs didn't hit that hard as I expected it to be
Good voice but the instrumentals got repetitive , a solid 3.5-4/5 nevertheless , the best songs imo are Cant nobody love you and Cry to me
Genre: Southern Soul 3/5 An album full of jukebox stuffers and sock hop bangers, perhaps maybe a few years too late (considering it's 1964), Rock'n Soul by Solomon Burke is a totally bland, yet totally sweet, little soul album. There are songs on here that I'm sure your mom/grandma may know. Back in the day, songs like these were sexy, but in today's times they sound rather dated. No harm done though, as Solomon Burke's voice does plenty of legwork to make these songs more enjoyable than they could've been. Cry to Me, a song that sounds somewhat familiar without having heard it before, is a great showcase of Burke's vocal prowess, and the instrumental and choir vocals behind him are exactly what the title suggested: rock'n soul. Beyond that delightful song, the rest of the album sort of wades through some classic blues/soul tunes, not necessarily trying to do too much. It does the job, and it provides a great backing track for whatever you may be doing while listening to it. A classic easy listening, soulful record that should be easily enjoyed by anybody picking it up.
lots of belters, not quite as many bangers. great sound though!
Nice, pleasant sounding music, strong voice. 3
Took me back to Kellerman's ❤️
Enjoyable album. The vocals were really nice but there wasn't much variety I felt between the songs. By the end it felt like a pretty one-note album but I still enjoyed it.
Liked it more than I thought I would, but still pretty old fashioned similar to other artists in that era.
-A lot more soul than rock -Every song was like the dang same, kinda reminded me of some old Christmas song -Got kinda tedious just being the same sort of song over and over again without any real builds of energy or anything
Fínt soul-stöff, góð rödd.
Solomon funk
Soul
It’s a good album who’s title accurately describes the sound. Being as old as the record is it felt fresh to me as a first time listen.
It was pretty good, some nice tunes. I enjoyed it more than yesterday's album by Elvis.
More consistently enjoyable than Elvis in Memphis.
Good soul with a powerful voice. Not my type of thing generally, but the performances are very good and the moody.
I really like old school soul, but I have to admit that Solomon Burke's music has mostly eluded me. This isn't bad, but it does sound a little more primitive than my preferences, and I wish the chorus girls were cut back a little. But there are some stone cold gems in there, enough that I can see me coming back to this when I need something to groove to. C.
Feels very comforting and cozy.
I’m not very well-versed in soul, but I feel like I should at least be able to recognize folks by name on this list. So, this is a surprise. What a voice! I’d toss this on if the occasion is right, but idk if I’ll run around rec’ing this over James Brown anytime soon. 3
This was cool. Especially the first track
Can’t nobody love you Somrone to love me He’ll have to go
I enjoyed what I heard, but not sure I was amazed by any of it?
Inoffensive classic 60s music. Nothing I'll ever put on again but also nothing I've got anything to hold against.
I am not familiar with the SOLOMON BURKE; however, I did see him live once opening up as a second act for LUCINDA WILLIAMS back on July 17, 2002 at Central Park’s SummerStage (Chuck Prophet was the third opening act). I don’t have any favorable reaction upon seeing SOLOMON BURKE live. After listening to ROCK N SOUL, I did not find any warmth or emotion in BURKE’s "soul" music, so I did not appreciate his vocals and the music itself. I do prefer OTIS REDDING over SOLOMON BURKE. I am not crazy about BURKE’s preachin’ vocal quality and his forced nature and there is no groove or swing to the music itself. In 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, ROCK N SOUL is the only album included. Another album at the intersection of R&B and Soul. There's a wide range of influences on this album including some Bossa Nova, and county/western. Though Solomon Burke has a great voice, I understand why he was overshadowed by others in the Soul/R&B scene. He's not as explosive as James Brown, or Sam Cooke (live). His instrumentation is more sparse and calls to mind a more '50s style of instrumentation.
Ok, but nothing outstanding 58 years later. 3
Only if you're in the mood for Early 60's music
Nice representation of early soul-influenced rock and roll. It's not something I'll listen to regularly, but when the mood is right, it's nice. It's from an era before my time but probably due to movies and TV shows I grew up watching, I get feelings of nostalgia from it.
Pretty average soul. I liked it, I don't think it is anything special, however.
I understand he's one or the pioneers of soul, but. not a musical style i've ever showed any real interest in. That said, the album was a pleasant listen
3.5 - One of those soulful voices that seems to emanate deep down to his toes. He’s able to unleash that voice on “Cry to Me.”
Orecchiabile e piacevole.
Good songs to jam listen to on a long ride
Close to 4 stars. Pretty groovy all around, but generally not my kinda vibes
Dobar soul
Pristojan albumčić, paše.
Nice voice!
I know I know a few songs by Solomon Burke, but I'm not sure any are on here. It feels more 50's than 60's. But done really well. Old fashioned but pleasant. Four tracks in, it hasn't moved much tonally. Mid tempo rock and roll/soul music. I feel like it might have set the template from which James Brown et al then jumped off from... But it doesn't make it any less repetitive to listen to. He has a hell of a voice though.
I like that this project has introduced me to underappreciated talent. I did not know of this singer, this album, or any of the songs. And I appreciate Solomon Burke and this album now. I really like his voice and how he interprets these songs. I like that he championed the term "soul singer" and I think it's apt. Songs that stand out to me are "Can't Nobody Love You," "You're Good for Me" and "He'll Have to Go." I definitely love the backup singers on this, as well as the instrumentation backup.
It was nice to hear some soul! I think a few songs will make it into my library, but I don’t know about the entire album.
ROCK ‘N SOUL is a smooth sounding soul album featuring great backup singers. This takes me back to when I was a kid listening to Sam Cooke on my Close ‘n Play record player. I enjoyed Solomon Burke’s music, although I can see why Sam Cooke is more known. Still I’m surprised to have no recollection of Solomon Burke given the quality of this album and his title as the “King of Rock ‘N Soul.” Favorite tracks: Cry To Me; You’re Good For Me; Won’t You Give Him (One More Chance); Hard, Ain’t It Hard; He’ll Have To Go.
60's sound, solid.
3 stars. Its definitely influential, but I won't ever voluntarily listen to something like this. It is far too basic and uninteresting
I enjoyed this album. It reminded me of watching the movie Dirty Dancing.
This sounds like an album you’d put in the background of 50s movies when you don’t wanna use the music everyone knows
Some old school soul. Cool sound, but like a lot of old albums, suffers from sounding very similar track to track
Great voice, good tunes
A pleasant listen of early rock n roll / soul
A fun little romp through what I can only describe as "Music that Marty McFly's parents probably danced to". I love that this dude was a preacher but had a side hustle INVENTING ROCK AND ROLL
Solid album but the lyrics are pretty basic and the songs all sound pretty similar. Still has great vocals and instrumentals on most songs.
This was a bit of fun!
Solid, competent soul
Prachtig, bijna 4 sterren waard!
Goeie zondagochtend muziek.
Hier kan toch niemand op tegen zijn?
Good album to just throw on in the background while you're working around the house or in the office. Amazing how overlooked he is as a singer from this time period. Favorite Tracks: "If You Need Me" and "Can't Nobody Love You"
Lovely stuff
Buen álbum
Soul / Jazz / Big Band
Great stuff
Liked it!
Loved, a bit neat and sweet, but loved it.
Decent, Elvis vibes, I liked the first song most
Mysigt litet album.
Nice vibe. A real player
An amazing voice and great background vocals that carry an otherwise so-so album. The songs feel a little too similar, but they're not bad.
I was not familiar with any of the songs. It was a good listen.
It's not terrible, I just don't need it.
Liked the country influence. Has a little Elvis vibe with some of the arrangements
Classic old timey sound. Pleasant, but nothing that stands out too much
Enjoyable
First song is an instant love. I recognized, He'll Have To Go Favorites: Cry To Me He'll Have To Go
what a cool mix of rock n soul, will defo listen to this in the summer (pretty much right now) when it's too hot to even think of moving
2 of the songs caught my interest but the rest were very forgettable
There's some great crooning on this record, and I enjoyed some of the covers chosen for the album. Solomon Burke's voice has a lot in common with Elvis Presley on some of the rock'n'roll tracks, and Sam Cooke on more of the more soulful tracks. Fav Tracks: Cry to Me and He'll Have to Go
Dirty dancing
Cool
Added "If You Need Me" to my day to day liked list.
Im a fan
Generally easy to listen to. Several songs are pretty similar but some are nice. Good voice. 3.5-ish.
iiii liked it
Smooth mate
decent music, lyrics not particularly striking.
Highlights: Cry to Me, Won't You Give Him (One More Chance) If it weren't for Dirty Dancing (and "The Scene"), we may not even know about Cry to Me...But it's a great song.
This is some smooth music. I like this dude's voice and the songs are easy to listen to.
Ok
3.5/5
Very pleasant listening from a bygone era. I could see this being a nice thing to have a little private dance to or making/eating dinner together.
Fin musikk =/= bra album. 5+/10
No surprises but enjoyable.
Very soulful. Pretty good. 6-7/10
Nice
songs were all very similar, not bad just 🤷🏼♀️
Nice sound for an album from -64. Well worth a listen.
Couple of bops! Not really my thing.
Oh boy oh boy what a set of pipes. The old romantic in me can't resist some of the tunes.
A fun listen! Outside of my normal wheelhouse, but I'm glad to have found it. Not groundbreaking, but nice smooth listening.
Rock n roll classic.
Great voice, very sweet (maybe too sweet) songs.
Does exactly what it says on the box. A good portion of the songs do follow the same drum pattern, but the emotion here is palpable.
Ensimmäisellä kuuntelukerralla tämä tuntui täysin yhdentekevältä, kädenlämpöiseltä tunnelmoinnilta. Jollain oudolla tavalla tämä kuitenkin nappasi mukaansa seuraavilla kuunteluilla. Lopulta ihan miellyttävää, joskaan ei erityisen merkityksellistä, kuunneltavaa
Nice 60's vibe - title suggests its a mix of rock and soul. Easy listening but few song deviate from each other.
started strong but couldn't stay into it
Good album of 60's rock/soul. That being said there may be later artists that I enjoy more of this style.
Not so much my style, too soul for me, but I'm sure its a great album for the genre
Nice jazzy album for some background music
it's ok
Not that bad but not memorable to me
Nice, easy soul music. So many hits recorded here.
Not all old music is sustainable.
Tämä(kin) oli hyvän fiiliksen levy. Ei täysin uus tuttavuus, mut positiivinen bongaus silti
Very ok. Should be called “soul” no rock here. That said, he has a great voice and there are good songs here. Just a little too slow in general.
1964: Cry To Me, If You Need Me
Beautifully sung, and pleasantly smooth but it's also terribly shallow and repetitive. Something that chunter away in the background rather than break life's iron crust.
Cry to me is the standout so far. Just out of reach was so over the top it made me cringe. The simpler the presentation, the better the track. Someone to Love Me sounds great because the lack of clutter and production add-ons. The album has some hits and a few good songs, but I was surprised that it had seven top 100 hits.
Not the best soul album I’ve ever heard, but alright
Like the title suggest it is an interestig blend of rock n roll and soul music. Solomon melds them well, and he has a fantastic voice to do so. But a lot of the songs are fairly uninteresting.
Maybe a 2.5
forgettable
Not that interesting of a sound, really liked won’t you give him (one more chance), but that was pretty much it.
Cool q decirte de fondo
dated then, still dated now.
You’re Good For Me
More classic oldies; about what you’d expect.
2.0 Sam Cooke lite. It’s not bad but I wouldn’t listen to it again.
Good I guess but not my kind of thing
Pretty generic early 60s american rock. Not bad, but nothing spectacular
I forgot this album as I was listening to it
putting this on is like listening to any oldies radio station, however i think the recording and performances are particularly lively.
decent 60s rock, nothing too special
Production is quite bad, even for that time. Musically, there's not much about it, quite generic stuff for that genre. Well, in part because of that, Burke's singing wasn't that impressive.
Not really my kind of music singing is pretty good though bit too simplistic lyrical subject matter is practically the same on every song didn't really like it
A collection of singles over a four year period is not what I call a “must listen” album. 4/10.
Fine listen but nothin memorable
I'm struggling to write much about this one. It was a decent listen, but I doubt I'll come back to it.
I get tired of doowop music real fast
I've heard _of_ Solomon Burke more than I've heard his music. He definitely has a great voice. The songs are fine, but that's all.
Gear: HEDD Audio HEDDphone Two Artwork: ️👨🎤🟨🟦 Production (Mono/Stereo Mix): 🔊🔇👎/🔊🔊👌 Music: 🕰️🧭😑 Rating: 🎙️🎙️(🎙️)/5
Quite monotonous. It's a product of it's time, which is unfortunate for his vocal talent. There are other, better, more innovative sounding soul records that don't fall into the same cliches and production traps this one does.
Can appreciate the history behind.
A great voice, but a mish mash of songs.
No standouts
Pretty generic. This guy apparently didn't want to be labelled as 'R&B' because R&B was considered the devil's music. All I can say is, if you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem.
great guitar playing on this thing loving the soulish fills but everything else feels like a collection of cliches like they were only allowed to play three jams, dont think rating this the same as elton or so is fair, could be listening to it all day but doesnt feel too inspired, im not a dirty dancing guy so i dont connect to it trough that one song
2.4 3x nothing wrong with it
Not my style, did not enjoy.
Music isn’t bad, just not my style
felt like it was lacking in something but it was still nice enough 2.5
I thought this was going to kick more ass than it did. The title "Rock 'N' Soul" gives the impression of something with real power from the soul. Now there is some of that here, but I expect more joy than sadness. Solomon Burke mostly laments over some girl for the majority of this tracklist. I was expecting something like Little Richard with some Otis Redding. I like those guys because there's passion that I can hear from the get go and throughout their works. Solomon Burke has some of that but uses it to mope on the floor rather than getting back up on his feet. I wouldn't say this is essential, just OK. The guitarist really likes his eight note melodies (5/10, 2/5 on this scale)
