The passionate "Can't Nobody Love You" and humorous "You Can't Love em All" stand out from the batch of good but slightly bland songs. Specifically, Solomon's voice is exceptional, but the back-up singers did nothing for me on most of the songs. I award Solomon three sweethearts to love, hopefully they'll last him the length of this album. 🧍‍♀️🧍‍♀️🧍‍♀️

Feels like every mediocre soul singer/group in the 60s was trying to recapture what happened here, but it's inimitable. Best track: You're Good for Me

Nive voice and some nice tunes. As an album, a bit monotonous - especially with the backing vocals.

"I'm the king of rock 'n roll!" declares archduke Franz Ferdinand as his driver pulls into an alley by a sandwich shop in Sarajevo. This album feels like an anachronism. It's good, certainly. Burke writes great songs that bring rock and soul together in a seamless fusion. However, this album feels like the end of a genre and not the beginning of it. A lot of this stuff sounds like Sam Cooke, but not as good. It's a fine album overall, but it's hard to understand why it makes the list. It's not particularly groundbreaking, nor is it a particularly iconic example of this type of music. This genre was buried by the British Invasion shortly after it was released, and that's fine by me, because listening to this album, it feels like it had run it's course 3/5

"Rock 'N Soul" is a studio album by American singer Solomon Burke also referred to as "The King of Rock 'N Soul," "King Solomon," "Bishop of Soul" and the "Muhammed Ali of Soul." Burke embraced the interconnectedness of rock and soul. This album was originally released as an LP as Atlantic Record #8096. This album is sort of a compilation of his songs including seven top 100 hits. Burke has a fabulous soulful voice mixed with more rock-pop sounding music "Goodbye Baby (Baby Goodbye)" starts strong with female backing vocals which then harmonize with Burke's voice. Right away he earns his nicknames. One of his biggest songs "Cry to Me" has Burke begin in almost a whisper. He then goes loud and back soft. With the piano, more of a rock song. Honestly, not the best sounding production and mix, kind of muddled. "If You Need Me" is a great example of a rock and soul mix with the music and vocals. "Beautiful Brown Eyes" is romantic and soulful with the horns. The album ends with my favorite song "He'll Have to Go." Strings are added. It's slower. He's telling his girlfriend her other guy will have to go. This is a great album if only just listening to Burke's voice. The music has that early 60's sound. Sometimes not the best quality production/mixing but worth it for the overall music.

Had Fats Domino last week, this one survived the times better. Yes, music is to sweet for me but his voice is utterly beautiful and the music pleasant.

Pretty good. But dated and not really my kind of music. It's rare that I'd ever be in the mood to say, "hey I should put on some Solomon Burke."

Some fascinatingly frantic 12-string on this LP. There would probably be no John Fogarty without Solomon Burke. A great record.

This album was a touch early in the evolution of rock / RnB for me. Very tough to relate in any meaningful way.

Throwback to an era that didn't have color TVs, electricity, or the modern wheel. I felt like I was in the high school gymnasium from Back To The Future just before Marty McFly plugs in his guitar. Though it's fun to listen for a chuckle, this sound belongs in a museum not in my library.

Sorry, Solomon, but I found this to be neither very rocking or very soulful. The endcap to a pretty unspectacular week of albums in which nothing reached above a very low 3. After EW&F's "Shining Star" started us off Monday, nothing after that song has really felt worthy of something I had to listen to before my time on this earthly plane expires.

This album starts off great with Cry To Me. Even though it’s a slower pace, like the rest of the album, it’s got energy. I feel the soul. Nothing else on the album meets the level of Cry To Me, which is disappointing. It’s difficult to understand how seven top 100 hits are on this album.

Solomon Burke is timeless. His voice is addictive.

Rock ’N Soul is exactly how I would’ve described the music on the album, too. It’s very evocative of a certain era, and very sweet on the ears. For enjoyment alone, it’s a solid 3. Buuut it’s an album of covers, and you know my feelings about those, in the context of this list. 2.5

Varied enough to not sound same same like some of its contemporaries and retain my interest.

Meh. I don’t like this kinda music. Boring

I had never heard of Solomon Burke before, but I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed this vibrant record. There is nothing truly groundbreaking happening, perhaps if it was released 10 years earlier, and the lyrical content is not complex at all, but Burke's voice is magnetic and the instrumentation on point. The tracks never overstay their welcome, and there is plenty of variety both in genre, mood and dynamics. Pleasantly surprised!

I’ve never listened to anything by Burke other than his 2002 release Don’t Give Up On Me - so traveling back almost 40 years from that is quite interesting. Solomon Burke is a powerful singer and delivers a great performance on this record. But while there are no bad tracks nothing ever sticks out as truly extraordinary either. I don’t think that this would have been as out of the ordinary for 1964 as the person placing this album in this list would like us to believe. But nevertheless I feel entertained by Burke’s company.

Bluesy. I recognize a song from dirty dancing soundtrack

Best Song: Cry to Me. Bombastic, with an impressive vocal performance. Worst Song: You Can't Love 'Em All. The choir is just shouting. At this point in the album, I've also grown very tired of the "lovey-dovey" subject matter. There are other topics. Overall: The vocals really stand out here, even if a lot of the songwriting shows its age. If he had sung about more interesting things, I think I would have liked this album a lot more.

Fun songs from an era long gone. The picking is excellent and reminds me of how Brian Jones played. The intricate picking continues through the verses in a way that isn't interruptive. The ability to do this impresses me.

This was fine but I think his contemporaries like Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, Ray Charles etc put out more interesting material, hence the reason why he’s not as well known.

Old school cool and classic love songs.

A historically noteworthy and highly listenable album. I really love the very simple and early production on this album, but you can tell they were trying some things. The instrumentation sounds great and Solomon's voice is like silk. If you wanted one criticism its that the songwriting is a bit samey after a while, but then again, its soul, that's not really the point. What a pleasure to listen to.

A classic with a great hit but the album was a bit too poetic simp for me, don't get me wrong would still listen but not on repeat.

A very enjoyable, little soul album. It seems to have more depth than is apparent on the first spin and I might give it another listen in the future. Haven't listened to much classic soul since a while so it was a nice throwback for me.

Bit boring for my taste. Im not a big soul fan

I like Solomon's voice. It has the perfect soul sound. Not a ton of hits coming off of this though.

Cry To Me was a pretty good song, and given my long break from this, was a good song to come back to. Just Out Of Reach was a bit calmer, would make good background music as opposed to listening to it. Goodbye Baby was again good background music. If You Need Me was a bit more of a listening song than the previous two, which were better background noise. Can’t Nobody Love You was more of the same style, it was good, just nothing new to add. Someone To Love Me was the same, definitely from the 60s. You’re Good For Me was more of the same stuff on the album, nothing jumps out. Won’t You Give Him was a bit different than other songs so won’t complain Hard, Ain’t It Hard was bit more “country” opposed to the rest of the album, so again different. You Can’t Love Em All again really encapsulates that 60s sound, and was a nice throwback. Beautiful Brown Eyes again was good background music. He’ll Have A Go reminded me of Elvis, and was a nice song to close the album off. Overall, the album was good background music, nothing blew me away, but I didn’t dislike anything, would make good restaurant music. 3/5

Great voice!

More Soul than Rock by modern standards but very easy listening whilst working.

I enjoy Cry to Me, I'm pretty sure I first heard it from the movie Dirty Dancing. The album is from the 60's and I prefer this sound of the 60's compared to other artists and songs of that era. Overall, good sound and has good lyrics.

"Rock 'N Soul" is exactly what it sounds. A rock-'n'-roll soul album. For some reason, the tracks are shuffled in Spotify. I don't know why, and I haven't realized it when I listened. But began with the amazing "Cry to Me". I love the bluesy energy with the smoothness of soul in Burke's personality, especially in this track. Unfortunately, the rest of the album lacks the pure rock-'n'-soul energy of that track. A few tracks are pretty fine, but overall, it felt like generic '60s pop riff offs. I guess it's a must listen since it's the bridge between soul and rock-'n'-roll. But much of the vibes here can easily be blown away by its peers.

The album was good, it reminds me of a lot of similar music from that time. I don't know if this one influenced others or was influenced by others, probably a little bit of both.

I appreciated this for his great voice, the music history relevance, inventiveness and for the song "You're Good For Me" But in the end all song are pretty much turning into a blur and after 3 listens, nothing really sticks, stands out or made really much impression

Good ol' soul. Burke has a voice that could bring the house down, and he damn well knows how to use it. That's passion, folks. Raw, unbridled passion is what makes these simple souls songs so great in Burke's voice.

great sound although upon first listening you may not guess it is a 60's album but a 50's. alt least that was my impression.

An overall delight, with shades of the great Sam Cooke. This is just loaded with hit after hit. The ideal album for those who can't give their love to just one person.

I feel like I'm in a very cool bay area brunch joint. Or possibly a Quentin Tarantino film. Great, but great for specific contexts is what I'm saying: not an everyday listen. (Except why not? Because it doesn't feel like "my life"?)

Just not my style though I can recognize the artistry.

I really enjoyed the blues-rock blend on this album, and while the lyrics were very simple, his emotions poured out, and I could feel the sting of heartbreak seven decades gone. Cry to Me was my personal favorite, I also especially loved If You Need Me and Beautiful Brown Eyes.

Having something of a soft spot for 60's music this listen was made even better with how good this album was. No songs really stood out to me, but every one of them was as good as the last. 58/100 gecs

I like this one! Never heard of Solomon Burke, he's proclaimed the king of rock and soul (I don't know how that holds up, is that a name he gave himself?). He's got a fantastic voice and the songs work very well in this style. I totally understand the genre branding because it's right between those two. Album got a little redundant, but still an enjoyable listen regardless. Favorite tracks: Goodbye Baby, Won't You Give Him, If You Need Me. Album art: Very basic, but the bold blocking text and the slightly askew image elevate it just a bit. Simple, but I like it. 3.5/5

Oh man. I'm always a sucker for jazz, blues, and soul. This kind of had Sam Cooke vibes, in a good way. I didn't adore it but I did strongly like it. How could you not with that voice? This album makes me want to curl up with a scotch and watch Mad Men. Favorite track: Beautiful Brown Eyes. Lovely production, soulfully sung, great time signature, and blue eyes have enough songs about them already. Nice to have some variety in here.

Fabulous album from one of the greatest soul voices of all time. Several of these songs are pure classics, with "Cry to Me" being the standout track. It gets a little weak on much of the back half of the album, but on balance this is a really lovely collection of songs. I enjoyed it. Wow what a voice, smooth and silky one minute, rough and ready the next. I loved the punchy mono sound (would love to listen to this on vinyl). The songs are simple and the backing is fairly sparse yet full sounding; the typical 'dry' Atlantic sound, which I love. Back in their copycat days the Rolling Stones covered two tracks from this album (Cry to Me and If You Need Me) so you can see how influential it was. It's a bit old fashioned sounding, but who gives a damn when it sounds this good. Not much to fault, so it's easily a 5 star for me.

There are some mind-blowing good songs on this album and some really lack lutre ones. But a great voice and soo much heart ache makes this a stomper.

Genre: Southern Soul 3/5 An album full of jukebox stuffers and sock hop bangers, perhaps maybe a few years too late (considering it's 1964), Rock'n Soul by Solomon Burke is a totally bland, yet totally sweet, little soul album. There are songs on here that I'm sure your mom/grandma may know. Back in the day, songs like these were sexy, but in today's times they sound rather dated. No harm done though, as Solomon Burke's voice does plenty of legwork to make these songs more enjoyable than they could've been. Cry to Me, a song that sounds somewhat familiar without having heard it before, is a great showcase of Burke's vocal prowess, and the instrumental and choir vocals behind him are exactly what the title suggested: rock'n soul. Beyond that delightful song, the rest of the album sort of wades through some classic blues/soul tunes, not necessarily trying to do too much. It does the job, and it provides a great backing track for whatever you may be doing while listening to it. A classic easy listening, soulful record that should be easily enjoyed by anybody picking it up.

This is a covers album that just meanders around for half an hour. He doesn't have a standout voice, and these are all other people's songs. This has no appeal or relevance in 2022. Surely even in the mid-60s it was outdated by a good 10 years. 2/5.

Imagine have the soul to sing 'Cry to Me' with the power and emotion of Solomon Burke. Almost makes me feel like an inferior human being. Sadly his 'prodigious output' means it's a mixed bag of an album, he was probably already writing his next album 10 minutes after releasing this one.

There’s an honesty and purity and directness to this singing and playing that is very rewarding. Burke had such a big voice, but it’s agile and fluid, too, moving smoothly through the different sub-styles (e.g., Calypso, blues, ballads). “You Can’t Love Them All” and “Beautiful Brown Eyes” are the highlights for me. 4/4. Easy.

Iv never heard of Solomon Burke before but I have heard cry to me before from dirty dancing. I’m a fan of Sam Cooke and Otis Reading so was always going to enjoy this. A great soul album one I’ll add to my rotation.

This is a pretty good record. Cry To Me is a great classic tune. You Can't Love 'Em All is a little creepy in a Mambo Number 5 kind of way. Solomon has such a powerful voice and I like how subtly he goes from crooning to wailing. The album has a really great 60's R&B/Soul feel.

I really really liked this album. Some of my favorites: If You Need Me Won't You Give Him (One More Chance) Hard, Ain't It Hard I liked the production a lot. I don't listen to basically anything pre mid-60s, and I like how the guitar was panned all the way to one channel with other instruments sometimes solitary in a channel and sometimes mixed stereo. It felt like the guitar was next to me and not "around me" like I'm used to. I listened through it twice and want to listen again. 5/5

Good soul with a powerful voice. Not my type of thing generally, but the performances are very good and the moody.

I really like old school soul, but I have to admit that Solomon Burke's music has mostly eluded me. This isn't bad, but it does sound a little more primitive than my preferences, and I wish the chorus girls were cut back a little. But there are some stone cold gems in there, enough that I can see me coming back to this when I need something to groove to. C.

Es gibt hier so einen Sender, Bayern 1, da werden den ganzen Tag alte Lieder gespielt. Da kann ich mir das gut vorstellen als ein Album was sich perfekt in den langweiligen Hintergrund einfügt.

Schwierig. Also eigentlich nicht so wirklich heutzutage, aber ich will dem Herren nicht vorwerfen dass er nicht emotional in den Aufnahmeprozess gegangen ist. Nur leider macht das heutzutage nichts mehr mit mir. Die Instrumentals wirken fade, die Texte machomäßig und aus der Zeit gefallen. Da gibt's bessere Pop Soul Sachen.

Das Songwriting überzeugt nicht und dann bleibt irgendwie kein Grund das Album mit 12 gleichen Songs anzuhören, wenn der an sich noch so schön sein mag.

I'm surprised I've never head of this artist! The songs have exciting instrumentation and the vocal performance is very moving! Especially in songs like "If You Need Me"!

I love soul but I was a little underwhelmed on first listen. I guess I prefer the dance tracks to the slow jams and I didn’t recognise anything on here. I enjoyed it more the second time around and do appreciate that he was an important step in creating the genre. His wiki is worth a read!

Boy does Solomon have a voice. Feels like a good album for a cold fall day next to the fire. A little, uh, old timey for me but a pleasant listen.

A new artist and new music for me. I apparently had seen a clip of Burke's performance at his induction to the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame, but apparently I didn't remember much about that. I liked this album. Some of the tracks had elements that sounded like Burke might have influenced Cee Lo Green. "Cry to Me" and "Hard, Ain't it Hard" were the tracks I rated the highest. Both had a good energy and a good groove. This would be an easy album to put on again, to listen to something different than I normally do. Rounding up to 4 stars.

What a voice. I just wish I loved the songs more. I knew Cry to Me and love that song. I was excited when I heard it as the opening track, but nothing that followed grabbed my attention in the same way. I would have liked a little more variety.

Very interesting early soul music. If you like soul and R&B, this album is an interesting look at the early development of the genre.

I am not familiar with the SOLOMON BURKE; however, I did see him live once opening up as a second act for LUCINDA WILLIAMS back on July 17, 2002 at Central Park’s SummerStage (Chuck Prophet was the third opening act). I don’t have any favorable reaction upon seeing SOLOMON BURKE live. After listening to ROCK N SOUL, I did not find any warmth or emotion in BURKE’s "soul" music, so I did not appreciate his vocals and the music itself. I do prefer OTIS REDDING over SOLOMON BURKE. I am not crazy about BURKE’s preachin’ vocal quality and his forced nature and there is no groove or swing to the music itself. Pleasantly surprised. Dusty Gr00ves

Another album at the intersection of R&B and Soul. There's a wide range of influences on this album including some Bossa Nova, and county/western. Though Solomon Burke has a great voice, I understand why he was overshadowed by others in the Soul/R&B scene. He's not as explosive as James Brown, or Sam Cooke (live). His instrumentation is more sparse and calls to mind a more '50s style of instrumentation.

What an absolute gem. His voice has the power of Sam Cooke and Otis Redding. The songs are irrisistable.

Love his voice and the way he spans genres. I think it's hilarious when he name checks Sam Cooke and Ray Charles on "Can't nobody love you."

Bombastic vocal performances, everything here is super slick. Not something I'd always listen to but it's very nice.

He has a great voice. It's interesting hearing this early bridge between R&B and Soul. Definitely a foundational record worthy of being included here.

Fun

Burke reminds me of Brown, Cooke, and Womack. Maybe some Ray Charles too. He’s not quite at the level of those guys but he’s got a sound and the sound of soul.

Nice representation of early soul-influenced rock and roll. It's not something I'll listen to regularly, but when the mood is right, it's nice. It's from an era before my time but probably due to movies and TV shows I grew up watching, I get feelings of nostalgia from it.

Pretty average soul. I liked it, I don't think it is anything special, however.

this is the kind of music i like listening to when im doing stuff around the house like dishes or folding clothes, whistling along, twirling for no reason and feel like im in a movie. the songs blended in with each other for me and not all of them were the most memorable on their own, but for me it was more the entire experience than each song to its own!

Just what it says on the label: a healthy mix of soul and rock n roll. Solomon expertly blends the styles; both sides of the coin feel equally represented and endlessly enjoyable.

Absolutely Classic Sunday Music. Very easy to groove and rock to this piece, and I would say the percussions were played very well.

If you want that album that stokes that fire of romantic angst, the kind that endears you to the lady who chose you but took her sweet time doing so, then this album is for you. If you want that album that provokes that romantic angst whilst in pursuit of the lady you love, but things haven't developed as you hoped they would, and you don't know why but are insistent they should, then this album is for you, but you might also want to think about moving on. If you want that album that reminds you of how decisive and successful you were in landing the woman of your dreams, then this is the album for you. If you are at a 50s and 60s diner and there's a jukebox, then this album is for you. If you want to relive the late night informercials of those classic love songs of the 60s, then this album is for you. Solomon Burke has the incredible voice of a crooner, with gospel fervor. The album is aptly titled 'Rock 'n Soul' as the vocals and lyrics are very much what we would expect from soul, but the music while not quite less 'soul' seemed more inclusive of 'rock'. This listener knows a lot of little things from this era of music, mostly from movies and pop culture, and the experience with 'Rock 'N Soul' is an educational one. Solomon Burke is just too good at this music, and after further research, it becomes clear why. He's part of, if not the baseline for this genre. We could with valid criticism call everyone else imitators, and lament that Solomon Burke wasn't more popular as some of his contemporaries. "Rock 'N Soul" by Solomon Burke gets a 5/5 for this very reason. We can listen to Elvis, The Righteous Brothers, even James Brown, but this album is a ground zero for those talents. Where this album might lack in experimentalism and variety that appeals to the 21st century listener, this album does something even more valuable --- it defines where our music can go from here.

I know I know a few songs by Solomon Burke, but I'm not sure any are on here. It feels more 50's than 60's. But done really well. Old fashioned but pleasant. Four tracks in, it hasn't moved much tonally. Mid tempo rock and roll/soul music. I feel like it might have set the template from which James Brown et al then jumped off from... But it doesn't make it any less repetitive to listen to. He has a hell of a voice though.

I like that this project has introduced me to underappreciated talent. I did not know of this singer, this album, or any of the songs. And I appreciate Solomon Burke and this album now. I really like his voice and how he interprets these songs. I like that he championed the term "soul singer" and I think it's apt. Songs that stand out to me are "Can't Nobody Love You," "You're Good for Me" and "He'll Have to Go." I definitely love the backup singers on this, as well as the instrumentation backup.

Hooray! Some soul! I didn't think I knew this guy but once it started I recognized Cry to Me from that one scene in Dirty Dancing. You know the one. I also know He'll Have to Go but I'm thinking that maybe I really just know the first line, "Put your sweet lips a little closer to the phone," from a TV ad for one of those compilation records in the 70s. (And maybe not this version. Maybe Elvis?) I really like this! Sexy, bluesy, lots of yearning. So glad to be introduced to it.

ROCK ‘N SOUL is a smooth sounding soul album featuring great backup singers. This takes me back to when I was a kid listening to Sam Cooke on my Close ‘n Play record player. I enjoyed Solomon Burke’s music, although I can see why Sam Cooke is more known. Still I’m surprised to have no recollection of Solomon Burke given the quality of this album and his title as the “King of Rock ‘N Soul.” Favorite tracks: Cry To Me; You’re Good For Me; Won’t You Give Him (One More Chance); Hard, Ain’t It Hard; He’ll Have To Go.

Pretty standard mid-60s Atlantic output as far as I can see. There are a few well-known songs on it but, honestly, if I were looking for music like this I'd reach for a Motown Chartbusters compilation.

A classic.

Solomon Burke's soul music LP was released in 1964. It performed well on the charts and seems to be included on this album list because it's specifically soul music, which isn't very common. I didn't think this album had any spark to it - hard pass.

album name checks out. it promises both rock and soul, and that is exactly what it delivers - there's some great old-school rock & roll, and there are some tracks just dripping with the man's naked soul. given what was about to happen in american music at the time it was released, with the british invasion just starting to get properly underway, this album must've felt like a holdover from a time whose time was passing. i'm glad it managed to hang on, though, because it's a great view into the maturing of bluesy rock, and the beginnings of proper soul, all in one.

A fun little romp through what I can only describe as "Music that Marty McFly's parents probably danced to". I love that this dude was a preacher but had a side hustle INVENTING ROCK AND ROLL

Solid album but the lyrics are pretty basic and the songs all sound pretty similar. Still has great vocals and instrumentals on most songs.
