Reviews (page 7 of 12)

Pretty good tbh. Paint It, Black was definitely the standout for me. Transitioning straight from that into Stupid Girl is actually insane though

Classic rock

Better than the other stones album on here

Just a lot of classic rock on the b sides, nothing that was piquing my interest.

I don't really know what to make of this album. The early stones always sound like they are trying to be edgier than the Beatles. There are some really good moments on this album and you can hear what they are becoming. All in all though, I'd rather listen to Rubber Soul

My take on The Rolling Stones is that they have some undeniably good hits. The rest is just filler. I haven’t had a full album by them that has made me change my perspective on this. Not unlistenable. Just not something I care to repeat the whole album again.

Why the UK version of this album? The US version has Paint it Black which is the difference between a good album(3 stars) and a VERY good album(4 stars). This is one of the few Stones records I own. This is before they became a parody of themselves.

Couple gems.

Fairly generic. "Under My Thumb" stands out but little else does.

Some proper iconic tracks here, and some unremarkable filler. A Stones album I don't have, so interested to hear it. Their blues heritage comes through strong. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ❌️ ★★★☆☆ (5/10)

There are some cool songs on here and I like the experimentation on a few of them. They'll do better things but this is the start of something. 7/10

Actually not as traumatic an experience as I thought it might be. I don't cope well with Jagger's voice. One or two songs at a time is about my limit, but this wasn't horrendous. It's a lot more folksy than I imagined it would be, and musically it's right up my alley. There are so many great bands I wish I could switch a different singer into, these are one such band.

It's another Stones album. 3

A Rolling Stones album that I found to be workable. Out of the Stones albums I've listened to, this one seems to be the most cohesive. I liked the psychedelic touches to some of the songs.

This is a solid album from the early days of The Rolling Stones. It checks all the boxes. An overall bluesy feel with some psychedelic tones sprinkled throughout. It gets right to it with the opening track Mother's Little Helper. The lyrics are a bit silly and immature. Not really surprising as the band is still pretty young and it's their first full album of original music. Maybe their perspectives on relationships are fairly naive at this point in life. Overall, not their most complex work, but a cool vibe to listen to at a party or while working. 3.5 Stars

Aftermath isn’t a bad album — it’s got some solid tracks and a few moments where the Stones’ swagger really comes through. Songs like “Under My Thumb” and “Paint It, Black” (on the U.S. version) show why people talk about this record as a turning point for the band, with more original material and a bit of experimentation. Still, it doesn’t quite feel like their best work. The energy’s there, but not every song hits, and some of it just feels dated. Honestly, I’ve never totally gotten the hype about the Stones — they’re clearly talented, but Aftermath feels more like an interesting snapshot of its time than a truly great album.

105 Amo Paint it black.

I want my 11 minutes back from listening to Jagger catawall on about Going Home to Bang his girl. That's the most cliche bullshit blues "jam" I've ever heard. It's sounds like piss poor Grateful Dead expression but with Mick's voice "jamming" UGH!! Otherwise the hits are good & the rest is hit and miss. The band behind Mick should get more kudos for they prop up more so.

Very weird that this album had such a massive difference between the UK and US release of this album. Paint It Black is legendary and it's not on the album that was included on the list for some reason Standouts Mother's Little Helper Paint It Black (US version of the album) Under My Thumb 3/5

I found their previous album to sound dated but aftermath specially in its first few track was much more to my speed

This is the final Stones album for me on this list. I def agree with the inclusion as this is the first one that sounds like the Stones we know and like. Still a singles band.

Can't get the image out of my head of boomers dancing to this music and then proceeding to grow up, gain power and wealth and use it to wreck the world for everyone who came after. First bunch of songs are all about women doing the wrong thing. Not doing the their job well (Mother's Little Helper). Too pretty / haughty to take interest in the Mick (Stupid Girl). Shifting power dynamics - now mick is in control (Under My Thumb)

Listened Before? N Good album. I haven't spent much time with early Stones work and this one is a good intro. I enjoyed it, especially the hit Under My Thumb. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Under My Thumb

Irgendwie noch ein witziger Song.

Not bad

Not a huge Stones fan, but this album has some decent songs. Definitely of its time, a bit ahead of it, just like the Beatles. The Stones have always shone bright in their singles. This album is no different. From the sitar use in Paint it Black to the xylophone in Under My Thumb, the most interesting contributions from the Stones come when they experiment. But outside of this, when the produce the same kind of sound as The Zombies or the Kinks you forget why they are lumped into the same lauded and mythic group of artists as the Beatles, Zepplin, and Bowie.

Some classics. Obviously love Paint it, black, but hate the casual misogyny of stupid girl.

This is a “catching up” album it seems. Released the same year as Rubber Soul, Aftermath catches up to the sound of the Beatles in 1963. This is their “With The Beatles.” Like that album, this is a collection of early rock n roll tunes with tight structure and melody, and is pretty boring compared with what came after. I can’t comment on the lyrics because I completely ignored them. Not bad, not that interesting.

point2.

Somewhat underwhelmed. This isn’t a patch on the big 4 albums

I found this really quite boring…. idk

This is probably some great rock and roll in 1966. I was bit bored by most of it.

Of the three Rolling Stones albums I've listened to for this so far, Aftermath has been my favorite. I'm probably still good with the greatest hits, but this album has more of my personal highlights than the others ("Paint It, Black," of course, but also "Under My Thumb" and "I am Waiting"). There's no reason "Going Home" needs to be 11 minutes, though.

So I initially listened to this while stuck in SFO on a flight cancellation. Bad mood. There are a number of hits and familiar pieces. Not entirely my preference but I recognize historical context and more good than bad. 3/5

Classic Rock Album.

Yep, that's the Rolling Stones. Not really any different to the other albums on here.

6/10 The Stones got a lot better by the end of the 60s. This album has some fairly weak songwriting - "Stupid Girl" and "Under My Thumb" are nasty little songs and "Going Home" is a pointless 12mins ramble that would have nothing going for it if it was 3mins long. Why would you do that? Much of the recording is dated and sounds like it was done on rubbish handheld tape cassette recorders. Maybe I'm harsher on this because I have high expectations of such a big band, but it really isn't all that good

Not bad but final track boring.

This one grew on me a lot actually

Heard of them, didn’t think much of the album.

Day 65 I have listened to this album perhaps twice before. Classic stones sound that I enjoy and I could also hear Dylan influence in some tracks. The album starts off strong and starts to fade a bit cause they all sound quite the same but I still enjoyed the listen. (3.5/5)

Good have not heard this Rolling stones. I listened the US version. I never really read why there were two fairly different releases between the US and UK.

5.5/10 Highlight: Paint it Black

I've never heard this album before! But it was really good! Just kinda sounded like classic stones!

Alright ... I didn't listen to this album yesterday. It was Friday. I really didn't feel like harshing my vibes with The Rolling Stones, the most overrated band in the history of the world. But I feel I'm familiar enough with it to give it a rating. It's a three. That's what the Stones do. They make albums that are threes.

Some of that lyrical content is red flag material, which is especially unfortunate for Under My Thumb. The back half is way stronger than the first half. I don’t care for most of it besides the opener. Out of Time is great, along with I Am Waiting and Take It or Leave It.

LOVE paint it black but the rest is unfortunately much less good

*Paint it Black is awesome *Goin home is verrrrry long *Decent rock and roll but didn't hook me very much

After looking at the song titles I decided the US shorter version was the one to listen to today. I have a love/hate relationship with The Stones. I think they have a handful of great albums, mainly the run from Beggar's Banquet to Exile On Main Street, with a smattering of excellent songs on some of the later albums. I also think they are mean spirited, misogynistic, sloppy, and very repetitive. This album is all of those things, with the only positive being early use of interesting instrumentation. All of this is done to better effect in their later albums, however. It's not a bad album per se, but it is a frustrating one. They were coming into their own, but just couldn't yet get out of their own way.

Pretty uninteresting for the rolling stones. Mother's little helper is a horrifically underrated song in the stone's catalogue. Under my thumb is pretty good aswell. A lot of this album just sounds like background music though. 6/10 Favourite: Mother's Little Helper Least Favourite: Take It or Leave It

Not their best, not their worst

It's kind of nice to hear some deeper cuts from The Stones, rather than just their big hits. Like many selections on this list, I believe this record is best enjoyed by more hardcore fans than the casual listener. A decent list, but a bigger fan would enjoy this far more than I did. I've always been more of a Beatles guy anyway. ;)

Better than Coldplay

3.2 - gal nieko, bet ne man

Mick Jagger's vocal charisma saves this from simply being Rubber Soulless

I’ve never found the Stones that interesting musically. They charted a bunch of hits, but most of their albums never pulled together for me. Their best albums hit 4 stars for me, but this is not one of those.

i just don’t feel much of anything connection wise towards this music! i know it’s foundational and i understand its importance and it’s definitely solid but… i don’t feel a draw towards it that much. folks who were teenagers in the 60s are going to getch me for this for sure

Meh. Couple of hits

thoughts: (this is for the US version.) maybe this project will change my mind but even with the accolades and all, i’m just not a rolling stones guy. i do love “paint it black” and honestly i really enjoyed “going home” but otherwise, it’s… fine. the more bluesy stuff was cool but otherwise, it came and went and it’s just not for me. songs: “paint it black”, “doncha bother me”, “going home” rating: 6.1/10

A few fun songs mean it's good enough

Peaks with Paint it Black, but the rest is still solid.

So much to talk about! First off - musically this thing is so hit or miss. Typical early Stones. One song is unique and still holds up 60 years later, and the next is just a complete waste of time. There are some boilerplate 60's rockers, some bluesier numbers, and some country-inspired tunes. There's even a clear Beatles rip off ("Flight 505"). But most of it is pretty forgettable. "Paint it Black" (on the US cut), "Mother's Little Helper" (on the UK), "I am Waiting," "Under My Thumb," and "Going Home" are musically interesting and diverse, and will stick with you. The rest you'll forget in 24 hours. I want to call out "Going Home" for a minute. It's so incredibly dopey for the first two or three minutes. The chorus is just so brick-wall dumb. And then....it transforms. And becomes something really interesting. It's like the joke that goes on way too long but the longer it goes on the funnier it gets. It's great. Thematically this album is very tricky. The misogyny is a thread that runs through nearly every song. The obvious examples being "Under My Thumb" and "Stupid Girl," but just about every other song shows an adolescent hatred of women that's pretty embarrassing. I guess they were having a hard time with all the groupies they were pulling. SHRUG. THREE STARS

I get the Stones v Beatles war, and how the Beatles won. Listening to each of the Beatles albums I’ve had so far I recognise at least 90% of the songs. Yet listening to a Stones album then I recognise about 10%. Thousands of radio stations and playlists can’t be wrong. This particular Stones album took a few listens to get into - apart from the 10% (Mothers Little Helper/Under My Thumb). On the whole I like it. Apart from ‘Going Home’. That one single track must have been the launch pad for a million Jagger impressions. Totally over-acted. And too long. Drags the whole album down to a 3.

They can make some decent music when they aren’t being complete tools

I find with a lot of the entries from the 60’s I’m looking at them too much from a current perspective rather than a complete overlook of the album. Realistically I found this to be alright - nothing special, solid roots but nothing to make it pop. But, that’s just the time it’s being played in. If I was in the 60’s and there wasn’t too much else to obsess over, I wouldn’t mind.

A couple classics I knew of. Listenable but tbh couldn't get pulled into it. Favs: Paint in Black, Under My Thumb

Fell off during the second half for me

This was ok. I enjoyed the knock off Beatles songs. The rest were pretty boring I really don't get the hype 3 ⭐️

More fun than I've had with some other rolling Stones albums. More of their classic sound, but did get bored with the album at some point and was ready for it to be over

A few great songs and a few average songs. I listened to the UK version … I’ve loved Mother’s Little Helper since I heard the Mary Coughlan version when I was a teenager, but Paint It Black is undoubtedly a great song…. Don’t understand why they didn’t include both🤷‍♀️

Once again I listen to the stones and come away... not loving it but also enjoying it wayyyyy more than I would expect, mainly because I'd think their style of blues rock would be more of a drag than it winds up being, which I appreciate. I think part of why it clicks here is that the sound is so understated and just chill here which I enjoy more moodwise

So many Rolling Stones albums! That might sound like a complaint, but as someone who was just OK with the Stones, but wouldn't go out of my way to buy or listen to them, it's been eye-opening. As for this album, the first half is far superior to the second half. Much of the second half just sounds like a bar band doing straight-ahead old-school blues. I find it to be weak and uninteresting. The exception is the extended play out of Going Home. That jam at the end is pretty good. Listening to the full Stones albums over the last month or two has made me appreciate their experiments and modernization of old blues. Their earlier albums were young British dudes trying to be like old US blues guys and I'd say not too well. But I guess it got them in the door enough that they had time, money, and resources to experiment and make some great music. I'll listen to the singles from this album, but I don't think I'd listen to the whole thing again. Overall, the album's a three, but Paint it Black is a 4 and Under My Thumb is a fine five!

Good if you like the Stones. ok

Fun listen, I had heard “Under My Thumb” a million times, but I wasn’t expecting this record to be so bluesy! Best Track: Under My Thumb

Not my favorite Stones album, and the misogyny is awful, and there a a lot of tracks that are kinda meh. But it's still a good listen.

An early Rolling Stones album with a few catchy tunes but not a lot of risks. Just some bluesy pop music

It was fine

Would give 3.5 if I could, still maybe a little 60sish for me, but enjoyed more than dusty springfield of yesterday. Listened to the US version

I had a really hard time with this one. I can hear what is going to become the Stones that I know, but those early experiments in stereo sound are particularly jarring to me now.

Life sucks. That's why you need the song to stain everything in sight. wait a minute you are all talking about the British version? guess i don't have any space to put my personal dispair since Paint it Black is not on this. but in fact the glimmer twins' songwriting on this really inspired me a lot. you see at most of the time they sound really shite but later they become better. so i am not to worry about my terrible music skills. 3/5

First few songs are good. Under my thumb is the standout. Rest of the album is just ok.

It's fine, but I don't really get why the Rolling Stones are a big deal

This had a lot of the same problems other Rolling Stones albums we have done did, but Paint It Black is undeniably great, and I also enjoyed Under My Thumb

This album is fine, but it still feels like a transitional work. The songs tend to get a bit repetitive, though the inclusion of Paint It Black on the U.S. version gives it a significant boost.

Maybe this is an important record in the progression the Stones but other than a couple good tracks (Painted Black) it’s just good.

There's a few good songs on here, but a lot of it is forgettable. I listened to the UK version.

It's not their best, some good tracks but a fair bit of filler and under my thumb is very grim in hindsight.

The only song on this album that isn’t aping the Beatles, Beach Boys, Byrds, or Bob is paint it black. Doesn’t sound like the stones to me.

Middle of the road Stones album. None of the songs really stand out except for Under My Thumb, which stands out more for how creepy the lyrics than anything else.

I like how everything sounds, but certain moments felt sorta self indulgent

Decent album

Some good solid rock and roll, hell yeah! Starting out with a nice little song about housewives doing drugs, Mother's Little Helper was pretty funny. The rest of the album kept the energy going, good fun all the way through. Roll on, Stones. Best song: Mother's Little Helper

Vaguely misogynistic with some decent guitar. No song needs to be 11 minutes and 13 seconds long, especially not Going Home.

Didn't capture me in the way I thought it would. Not good spreadsheet music.

I don't love early Stones nearly as much as I love 1970s Stones. This was OK.

Not bad. Could have done without the last song on the album but overall it was alright.

Seems to be a thing with the Stones. The albums drag. Some great songs (although listening to Mother's Little Helper as an adult leaves a sour taste) but not all of it is that enjoyable.

i love the stones but they just have never been an album band for me. also might have listened to the wrong version of this.

This was quite good. Better than the last stones one, but it was really long, I don't need an hour of 3 minute stones tracks. The more interesting instruments really helped in - marimbas etc. A bunch of the singles are pretty good. Apparently on the American release they took 4 of the album tracks out and put paint it black in. Immediately I'd rate that album higher than this.

Never been a huge stones fan. Listening to a full album was interesting, especially to see the band beyond their greatest hits. I simultaneously understand why the band is as big as they are, but also still don’t see what all the fuss is about. Favorite song: Paint It Black

With Aftermath, the Rolling Stones delivered their first album of all Jagger/Richards originals—a bold step toward artistic self-definition in the mid-’60s British rock scene. The album is a mixed bag in terms of quality, but its stylistic range is impressive, veering from sneering satire to delicate balladry. "Mother’s Little Helper" kicks things off with a clanging, Eastern-tinged riff and a caustic commentary on suburban malaise, while "Lady Jane" floats in with Elizabethan grace, showing a softer, courtly side rarely glimpsed in their early work. Then there’s "Under My Thumb," with its slinky marimba groove and lyrics that still raise eyebrows—cocky, catchy, and unmistakably Stones. Even when it misfires, Aftermath stands as a vital document of a band stretching out and discovering the edges of its sound.

Paint it Black is really great, however every other song afterwards fell flat for me. There were a lot of questionable lyrics and odd choices. I can imagine it was really good at the time, but nowadays there's just so much better out there

Yeaaaah it's just ok, lowkey quite mid. Highlights: Paint It, Black

Decent Stones album

A couple of bangers with Paint It Black and Under My Thumb but not revolutionary like Rubber Soul or Pet Sounds

Not my cup of tea. Incredibly samey throughout and lacking any particular oomph. Reading the reviews is how I found out there is a UK vs US version. The US version has 'Paint It Black' which would immediately have given this an extra star, but I shall not update the score because that's not the version I listened too.

Quality work from a legendary band. One of those albums that doesn't hurt their legacy, but by itself, wouldn't alert the world of their nobility.

Either this album is better than some of the other stones ones or I’m falling starting to get them

Pretty good album without any standout hits. As Grant had mentioned to me that Paint It Black is on this album but not the UK version and it feels like the part that was missing

only after listening multiple times did it dawn on me that the reason I know this album (Paint It Black) isn't on the UK version. A vestige of the early album era is this fuckery labels would do with their album releases, similar to how Rubber Soul is different in the UK vs US.

3.5 stars

I Am Waiting saves this album from a 2 star. And part of my love of that song is it's use in the movie Rushmore. I listened to the UK release which didn't have Paint it Black. That would have bumped it to a 3.5, but still a 3 on this site.

Standouts Paint it Black Under My Thumb

(UK version) Full of hits, and showing that these guys had something more up their sleeves than Chuck Berry covers. There are flashes of soul, pop and psychedelia which do a great job of bringing up Carnaby St./Minis/flower dresses/all the other cliches. Gets samey and drawn out through the middle though - must have been one of 1966's longest records! Gnarly tones and cool sounds, though! Favourite tracks: Mothers Little Helper, Under My Thumb, Out of Time

Pretty good, enjoyed it but wasn't super remarkable. Going Home did not have to be 11 minutes long imo. Best song: Mother's Little Helper Notable(s): Under My Thumb

Good to decent stuff. Maybe a bit uninteresting but still was cool enough. 3 stars

It had a couple of good songs, namely Under My Thumb and Out Of Time. The rest weren't bad. A pretty satisfactory rock album all round.

Couple good tunes but not sure this is the Stones album I’d revisit

There are two versions of this album, a UK release and a US release. Thankfully these days it's easy to listen to both. Paint It Black definitely gives the US version the edge, but it's missing Mother's Little Helper which is also a great song. The rest of the album is okay. I read in the wiki that this came out shortly before Bob Dylan - Blonde on Blonde and the Beatles - Revolver... I like those albums better to be honest.

I don't know if this is because I've never been that big a Stones fan, or because I'm a big woke liberal who found 'Under My Thumb' a weird listen, but I enjoyed this a lot less than I thought I would? Paint It Black is good, there's good guitars and some fun experimental stuff here but I think I went into this with high expectations and they weren't met.

The Stones! Sadly I wasn't feeling this one too much. A lot of the songs are good but the ones that aren't are pretty boring and not my favorite. 68/10

Not my fave of theirs but still a few bangers. Quite repetitive.

I don't really like it, but I think their better albums are the early 70s ones, some bits are quite good, like the really popular one, but I think the fake American accent blues thing is just so trash, and the 11 minute song should never have seen the light of day. My favourite stuff from around this era is much more experimental (rubber soul) or doesn't try to hard too hard to be American (the Kinks or the Byrds). Its also so repetitive, and too loong, the first self-titled album was so digestible because it was like 30 minutes Favourite songs: Lady Jane, under my thumb, think. Overall around 5/10

Gotta love albums that have two different versions in separate countries. I’m assuming the book listed the UK version, considering it has a hard-on for the UK. But ultimately, I opted for the US version, because it was shorter… and because of Paint It Black. I’m not skipping that song. In reality though, it doesn’t matter. The differences is song order, as well as four songs that didn’t make the US version. Aftermath, regardless of region, was okay. Most of the songs were just kind of standard repetitive 60’s pop. Stuff like Stupid Girl and Under My Thumb were nice and catchy. But I really could have done without Going Home. Eleven minutes of Mick Jagger improvising is a hard pass from me. Honestly, it was a good call for the US version to stick it at the end. The UK version puts it in the middle. That would have made the rest of the album fatiguing. This was definitely not my favorite album from The Rolling Stones. It’s considered their breakthrough, but I think they needed more development, personally. Favorite track: Paint It Black Other hits: Under My Thumb, Stupid Girl, I Am Waiting, Out of Time

Didn’t realise this was the album that had under my thumb on it, definitely the highlight of the album. The rest wasn’t too bad nothing to right home about, still a fun listening experience

The album where The Stones matured. Still one of the greatest opening numbers to any album.

This was a nice project to run to in the morning. Nothing too spectacular but it sounded like solid timeless music.

Interesting, not 100% mine. Some songs are great though

Valeria a pena comprar este álbum em 1966 nos EUA só pra ouvir Paint it Black, I Am Waiting e Under My Thumb, as três melhores faixas do disco? Sim, valeria. 3.5/5

not my favorite stones album but I still like and appreciate they were so prolific in the mid 60s it was almost comical how many albums they popped out.

A strong start that waned. Meh, meet with a few strong songs.

Another case of a good A side followed by a mostly middling side B. Highlights throughout but they did much of this better on later albums. Definitely of its era right before the truly came into their own.

Not to bad for it's time, but nothing to note worthy. It's a fine tune

Similar issues to other Rolling Stones albums, some brilliant songs (Under My Thumb, Out Of Time, Mother's Little Helper) but plenty of rather forgettable stuff (Stupid Girl, It's Not Easy). Going Home is about 6 minutes too long as well. Not a bad listen but when you consider what The Beach Boys and The Beatles were doing that years, they seem behind.

I'm not really big on the Stones but Paint It Black is an absolute banger. This album is actually pretty solid overall. I should give it more credit.

It's probably getting a bit old nowadays, but still interesting to listen. Some beats were nice and I could find myself tapping my feet along side it.

Beggar's Banquet sounds a whole lot better doesn't it? Heh, this is the primordial stew from whence Beggars, Let It Bleed, Exile and Sticky Fingers all come from. It's not great - it's just blues and covers and blues covers. BUT, there's something else there. Brian's marimba and sitar, the beginning of real progress in song writing. In the end, it's still not quite there. A lesser Stones album for sure, Under My Thumb is great (and I listened to the UK version, so no Paint It Black for me) but the rest isn't memorable. 2.5 rounded up to 3 for me on this one.

Solid record. Some great,some filler.

Hard to believe this is the same band that had that lackluster debut album only 2 years earlier. The big songs on this one are classics. The lesser tracks are musically interesting, but lyrically a bit meh. Leaps and bounds over the self-titled album, though. Faves: "Mother's Little Helper", "Under My Thumb", "Doncha Bother Me" Meh: "I Am Waiting", "Stupid Girl"

Well it was better than the first album.

Really good album. Of course, none of the songs are as good at Paint It, Black; that song really set the tone for the album and it didn't follow suit at all which left it feeling a little disjointed to me. Overall, a very good listen.

Interesante

Early Stones which suffers a bit by comparison of what followed. Songwriting skills and musicianship were still in their infancy. Mothers Little Helper and Under My Thumb are the standouts that have best withstood the passage of time.

good album, some songs felt very bob dylan, and i guess they knew eachother, i wonder why the album is iconic outside of it being a rollingstones album, good but wouldent really die to listen again

Some gems and some filler.

A few good ones (Paint it Boack, I am Waiting, High and Dry), otherwise pretty mediocre. The second half is better than the first. Note: I listened to the American version.

Early, Mid Stones Album, but with a few classics.

I don't think I've ever listened to The Rolling Stones before this, but I wasn't too impressed with this album.

I went back and forth on the rating for this one. Some songs I really enjoyed and others kind of just droned on and on for me. 3.5

Some good songs but too much straight ahead blues for me.

Theyre like an artifact to me

A classic, which has aged less gracefully than some of their later works.

Early Rolling Stones. Solid offering, evidence of their strength from the start

very oldies but cute

Mick jagger

Super solid but not spectacular. I let was obvious early in their career that they were copying the sound of the American blues note for note.

Enjoyable and lots of songs I hadn’t heard before, but not as strong as the last Stones album.

First song was iconic. The rest were good, but the last song annoyed me so much I had to dock the score.

I listened to the UK version (as it has the same cover art as the appearance on this list) The usual bluesy Rolling Stones signature sound is here but sort of fed through a lite psychedelic filter with some baroque pop touches. Some songs more than others shine but there is undeniably filler here. I liked the opening track a lot and lady Jane might be my favorite here. I have a huge issue with this albums version of Out of Time: why the fuck would they go with this when the superior orchestral version exists and was relegated to an outtakes album (Metamorphosis, please listen to that version of the song instead of this sloppy shit). That creative choice alone keeps this from being a 4 star album IMO.

I could take or leave this album. Aside from “Mothers Little Helper and Under my Thumb” the rest is forgettable. 1001 album worthy: no - 84/153

I’m definitely a greatest hits girl when it comes to the Stones. The hits are bangers but the rest is a bit meh. And I’m not the greatest fan of Jagger’s voice. That longer track was boring. Could have done with them swapping that out for ‘Paint it Black’, which is sorely missed on the UK version

Okay so I know some of these already cuz obviously? I see why paint it black became the success it was because it's the strongest song on this album. Some of the songs are maybe a little too silly. Also I can't take It's Not Wasy seriously because Jagger complains about doing chores 💀.

a lot of nice songs throughout the album, but some alright songs in between.

Although it doesn't contain any of their mega-hits, there are so many classic Rolling Stones tracks on this album, including "Mother's Little Helper", "Lady Jane", "Under My Thumb", and "Out of Time".

Klassikko, jota on moni versioinut, misogyniaa

Besides the openers on both version, something about this album never managed to snatch me. No aspect of it bothers me, but nothing sticks out. It also doesn't help that Goin Home is 11 and a half minutes long, and turns into an unnecessary jam session. The rest is decent RnB. Maybe the US version, which is more condensed (at least that's what they tell), is better? ⭐⭐⭐

Middle of the road Stones for me. Not tons to reflect on. It's fine to put on and it's fine to not put on.

Listened to the US version (11 songs, 42 min) rather than the UK (14 songs, 53 min). This gets a four based on Paint It Black alone. I like the unexpected use of sitars, dulcimers, etc. throughout the album. However, The Stones continual treatment and references in life and lyric toward women being disposable sex objects is why they will never beat The Beatles, no matter how long they live or crusty they get.

I don't know whether I'm supposed to be listening to the US or UK album here. Paint it Black obviously elevates this but I do like some of the more straight bluesy numbers like Doncha Bother Me. Under My Thumb is pretty gross. Overall it's quite samey, especially the UK version.

I don't know if I'm supposed to listen to the US or UK album for this list. I went with the UK, but the US version is definitely better. I replaces both the opening and final track, and Paint It Black is a classic. Goin' Home is fine, but better than what it's replacing, and much better end to the album. I know enough about the context of the album to ask, why were they the Beatles alternative? I get when the war was Beatles Vs. Beach Boys. The Beatles were innovating in genres on both sides of the Atlantic, but this is mostly stale, at least in the US rock scene. I'm going to be generous and rate this on the US album.

ooff kinda underwhelming for the stones ngl, but still pretty cool stuff here and there 3.5/5

Possibly the first proper Stones album, in that it consists entirely of Jagger/Richards originals. Less positively this record belongs to the period of experimentation with psychedelic and baroque pop, which became a bit of a dead end for them. Brian Jones would mutter about Appalachian dulcimers at press conferences. Lady Jane is the peak example. Mind you, he was a mean marimba player. It’s also the nadir of Stones misogyny (hearing Jagger, of all people, singing about female vanity is the death of irony). Biographers assert that the enigmatic and fiercely intelligent Anita Pallenberg was a huge influence on the band at this time and gave them much of their energy and confidence. Under My Thumb is, I’m sorry to say, the best track on the album, musically at least, and became a live favourite for years.

Not a bad album.... but a day after listening to it, I honestly don't remember much from it at all. Middle of the road & not memorable.

Sorry Mark, this buttered no parsnips. It didn't click for me, and didn't vary much at all. Definitely serviceable, and it's the Rolling Stones, so... 2.5 rounded to 3. Not bad at all, but I'd not make a point to go back to it. :) Also my friend Mark went to see the Rolling Stones on the 6th of July in Hyde Park

UK version is missing Paint it Black which is probably the best song on there. Man I love the Stones but some of these early songs did not age well. They didn't really hit their stride till Beggars Banquet.

It was alright

Never was a Stones fan. It was ok.

It's the Rolling Stones... What can I say? I was always more of a Beatles fan. I like a few of the tracks here but it's not really blowing my socks off.

More Rolling Stones. I am now officially half of my way through the Stoneathon and I am on a nightmare blunt rotation, I'll tell ya hwat. Okay, I'll admit that I'm coming around to these guys. I knew of "Paint It, Black" prior to hearing this album because of some random ass Sonic parody from 15 years ago (https://youtu.be/i6GlLjWjhbE). Holy shit. Take me back. Much of this album is by the numbers and of it's time, though it's 60s rock. I can't complain and have never complained about such a category, especially now that I am coming around to it. "It's Not Easy" and "I Am Waiting" are pretty competent and enjoyable. I enjoy the "dainty" sound on "Lady Jane". Going Home egregiously violates my rule against 5+ minute songs, though the song is engaging enough to where it escapes my wrath. There's a surprising amount of variety on this album now that I think about it. "Paint It, Black" is the obvious highlight. Not because of my familiarity with the song, but because it's a genuinely great tune. Fantastic songwriting and one of the rare recorded instances where Mick Jagger's vocals work. The instrumental is very dynamic and free-flowing as well. I have still yet to hear anything at all about this band outside of the confines of this website. I'm gonna sit my ass down and do some research. That research being the 1001 Albums entry for this album. What is this entry? This shit makes no sense. Okay, the Stones had all of the pieces in place that would propel them to superstardom and this was their first album comprised of original tracks. You don't have to be so coy, Dimery.

Some great songs, but most of the album could be skipped over. The last experimental thing was ... They were bored I think.

Early Stones.

I understand this album may be important, but I didn't find it all that interesting. 2.5

So maybe it’s just the version I’m listening to but the mixing is terrible. I think it’s supposed to represent like being in a club listening to the stones play. But I don’t know. It’s unclear. Either way the album is fine. Some songs are good. Some of them are great. And you can really her the blues influence. But considering it was the released the same year as revolver and year before Sgt pepper’s and pet sounds, it feels too basic.

Not my favorite Stones album, but still pretty cool stuff.

Big catch up Donavon: Sunshine superman there are 3/4 tracks on here that are a blue print for the 70's ps nothing like Bob Dylan Solange hi great theme music that addresses the horrors of racism in America, a theme which this list has educated me on Fela Kuti & Ginger Baker:The Africa 70: Sat in a Jazz bar in the 70s, band playing, Gauloise in hand, whiskey in the other. What an album decades ahead Nico: Just to end any debate she can't sing or write. Save time you will never get back Rolling stones: Aftermath mixture of great tracks and drops, mothers helper former, stupid girl latter. Going home Change to Going insane by the end, the stones could not put a full album of quality tracks together which is what separates them from the Beatles

It's like eating a piece of cold bread, sort of enjoying it but not really, and then looking down at the bread and realizing it's blue and moldy except instead of bread it's the rolling stones album called "aftermath" and the blue and moldy is the misogynist af lyrics. 1 star

I will always use a private session for any Stones albums this site has me listen to, I just don't like them that much and I don't want Spotify to think I do. Couple of classics on this album, but rambling white boy blues that I get tired of. Jagger might be a prototypical frontman, but dear lord, I don't like his voice or the way he uses it.

Mother's little helper -- rough Stupid girl -- Meh Lady Jane -- Good Under my thumb -- YES Doncha Bother Me -- BLuesy, HARP Going Home -- Meh. Oh no, nice long buildup. Out of time -- meh I Am waiting -- OK, bit boring Little red rooster - nice

Rolling stones is great and two absolute classics are on this album -- under my thumb and paint it black. I especially love under my thumb, it's a track about power dynamics and funky. But Rolling stones doesn't do too much for compared to their legendary contemporaries. The rest of the album feels uninspired and copycatish. These guys are ridiculously talented and make lots of catchy great songs. But they just fall short of their contemporaries in finding great meaning in the music. In my opinion.

It’s ok

A few classics here, pretty decent album overall

Heard this one before. It's ok and their later albums are better. Not really a masterpiece with alright instrumentals and sometimes down right bad lyrics.

It's the third Rolling Stones album I've listened to, and it always goes the same way - there are a couple of great songs, but everything else is just forgettable

Enjoyed it more after they got back to some of the blues-ier songs. Always enjoy "Under My Thumb" and "I Am Waiting" 3.5 stars

Meh, OK album but not particularly impressive

I've never listened to this as a proper album before. So, it's another introduction to the early work of a very well-known band. Under My Thumb stands out as a taste of what's to come. And the bluesy songs sound more like their own take on the blues than just covers of older songs.

Another Stones album- I found myself not really enjoying this one as much. It had a couple of hits, but also a lot of songs that didnt age well. It did have some interesting songs I hadent heard before. Overall- good album, but definitely antiquated in subject matter

Interesting that the wikipedia page for Aftermath mentions Rubber Soul 14 times. Liked the instrumentation - pointed out as Jones adding weird instruments to songs. Not keen: Lady Jane, I Am Waiting Keen: Paint it Black, Under My Thumb (Jones' marimba vibes), Flight 505 (classic rock)

Solid overall with a few classic songs in there

A few enjoyable bits but also lots of forgettable numbers.

Who doesn't like Paint it, Black? Lady Jane and Under My Thumb are strong hits too. The rest of the album was good, very 60',s but not quite as strong as their later albums (IMO).

A couple big hits, but found the rest underwhelming.

Pretty good so far, classic stones. Ill need to see what the difference is between UK and US

It's an album very representative of the era, but the Stones hadn’t quite found their distinctive sound yet. Otherwise fun, but nothing exceptional.

Bouncy and fun, a landmark album for the Stones and for rock and roll. Also profoundly unacceptable which is hard to ignore. (UK Version - I sure missed Paint it Black)

It's alright.

Solid all around. I don’t think that I have listened to this album before but it was pretty good

opening w Paint it Black is super strong. it is such an iconic sound & song. the rest of the album tho-pretty boring. except for that rambling, overindulgent final track. that made me irritated.

Enjoyable, blues driven rock album.

I like the Stones. I very much dislike Jagger. +3 for paint it black on its own. The rest is basically mid range stolen repetitive blues. Going home made me physically upset. What an over indulgent piece of shit that is.

Not the Stones best.

Kann man sich geben.

it literally defies the laws of physics how every other song on this album is barely 3 minutes long and yet they all feel like they go on for at least ten minutes. i’m stuck in a hole in the time space continuum with mick jagger and i want out.

Paint It Black is still one of my favorite songs and Lady Jane is also great, so between the two of those in the beginning of the album, I thought maybe I'd like this a lot. But I found a lot of the songs way too repetitive to the point it became grating (Under My Thumb) or they used Mick Jagger's voice in a way that sounded grating to me (High And Dry). I do appreciate the mix of influences and styles on here and I think if it were someone else singing them then maybe I'd enjoy it more. But I realize the appeal of the Rolling Stones for a lot of people is the presence of the titular Rolling Stones so I think they're just not for me.

I'm always surprised when I get a Stones record on this list causethey never sound like I expect them to, even after now having listened to them three times. This was pretty good though - definitely got better as it went on, a couple of the first tracks were a bit wishy washy

Good album First song is very nice but overall quite repetitive and after 3 song it gets boring. Classic rolling Stones tho. 3,5/5

This album has two different versions on streaming services, which is very confusing. I listened to the version that matches the album cover on this website, which does not include the song "Paint it Black".

55/1001 - Paint it Black was cool. I could hear the unique instruments used on the various tracks and how they added to the songs but I didn't find them very interesting for whatever reason. I'll probably listen again another time.

More psychedelic than I thought.

UK version. 3.5. Rounding down because it was a bit boring. Had only heard one song before, not quite memorable.

sounds aggressively like it is from the 60's, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing

Kind of hard to judge without historical context, but Under My Thumb was a true standout on this album

It's a pretty good mid-sixties rock album. The Stones are taking baby steps to bring a grown up band.

Can't recall a single song, especially compared to let it bleed

I guess this is meant to be the UK version. Shame there’s no Paint it Black and that Goin Home is in the middle (the track is good tho), but you do get Mothers Little Helper and Out of Time which are a lot better than most of what is here. Also Under My Thumb is so good but those lyrics yeesh

Pretty typical of early Stones stuff. Some good songs and some songs that seem to be an off road trip trying to find who they want to be. Tough choice between listening to the US or UK releases, but only the first track is different and both are very good. So I recommend you listen to the full play from either version and then backfill with the single you missed.

I’m in the U.S. so that is the one I’m rating and reviewing. However, I wish Mother’s Little Helper and Out Of Time were on the U.S. version to replace Stupid Girl and Goin’ Home. That would’ve bumped my rating up a 4 or maybe 5. I always appreciated the Stones bluesier and grittier sound over the Beatles(especially early Beatles). That style is highlighted on Aftermath. My favorite stretch on the album is tracks 5-8, Doncha Bother Me to High and Dry. Paint it Black is one of my all time favorite Stones songs and a great opening song. It just sucks that Stupid Girl and Lady Jane follow that up on the track listing. Under My Thumb is musically great, lyrically not so much. To rate Aftermath as a whole, I have to go with a 3. It’s not a great album but it is one I can put on with some minimal skipping of certain tracks. 3/5

so i actually went through on Friday and listened to the UK and AS release. having listened to this album twice through, I'll say it was aight. I understand the Stones deserve their place in history, and how giant they were/are, and all that jazz... but this album didn't really pull me in. I was excited to hear 'Paint it Black' (shout out Guitar Hero), but otherwise it was just fine for me.

I didn’t realize The Rolling Stones were this old. Paint It Black is a classic. I got some multi-whiplash in the first few songs, but then sort of began to understand their style a bit more, which was quite varied, arguably dipping into country-western more than rock. Still, I enjoyed the album but nothing very stand-out.

Possibly best band name of all time? Good album and actually way more diverse than I expected.

Good album, a few iconic songs.

Mothers Little Helper, Under My Thumb та Out Of Time решта альбому, який є доволі великим, це більш стандартні блюзові композиції, які не несуть в собі нічого особливо нового.

Some great tracks, but a mid album overall. Going Home did not need to be 11 minutes long.

swaggy

Alright album, paint it black great song, lady Jane is I feel like where the Rolling Stones shined on this album. I also enjoyed think. High and dry is a close second to lady Jane

Not my cup of tea.

As time has gone on I’ve found the Stones less appealing. There were a couple interesting songs on here, Paint It Black and Out of Time come to mind. But that’s about it

Best chill, wat nummers aan playlist toegevoegd. Hoge 3 sterren.

Very early Stones, some simple and catchy songs, and some where Keith Richards was doing too much

Paint it Black is great. The other songs are all right, except for Under My Thumb, which is incredibly skeevy.

Written 29th May: Het album natuurlijk van Paint It, Black en Under My Thumb.

Always liked songs by the Rolling Stones so was worried I would be biased. Thankfully, Stupid Girl and Under My Thumb were such incel tunes it made it easier for me to be more critical. Mothers Little Helper was my fave from this album, always loved the guitar in it. Most of these songs were new to me and I have a couple of new faves like Goin' Home was a mood, can really relate to after not seeing my bf for 1 hour. Didn't expect some sadder ones like It's Not Easy, Take It or Leave It and What To Do. Big fan of juxtapositioning sad lyrics with upbeat instrumentals and vocals so that helped bump up the scoring.

The UK release (the intended release? not sure!) features a ten-plus-minute track of Mick Jagger just riffin’, and boy did it get old! The US release has “Paint It Black” right at the top, which, sure, that works - I like the track but prefer the UK’s opener “Mother’s Little Helper” as an introduction to the album. Album is a little too long and aimless in either release, but there are some undeniable classics such as “Out of Time” and “Under My Thumb” - I’m going to go with “Lady Jane” for my standout since I prefer the strings-first cut of “Out of Time,” and “Lady Jane” was a solid discovery from this exercise.

Another solid but slightly too long RS album

I usually dislike the Stones but this was pretty good.

"Paint it black" and "Under my thumb" are my favorite RS songs (despite the second one's lyrics, and I love the La Roux cover) but most of the album frustrates me. "Stupid girl" gets too cruel and too stupid. Still, I like this album more than Let It Bleed.

What was it about pre-00s male artists that love writing songs about "stupid" or "dumb" girls"? Rolling Stones, Neil Young & Crazy Horse, Run-DMC... the only worse trend was referring to sexual partners as "little girl", i.e. in Going Home, he says "touch me one more time ... little girl". The ablum has some good jingles (Doncha Bother Me, Going Home), but some songs are just grinding to listen to (Out Of Time is a 5:30 song that is 4 minutes too long). Yet, I have to give this credit for sounding like the early 70s in the mid 60s. Clearly this album was influential to rock and roll. 3/5

I only knew Under my Thumb and Paint it Black beforehand, and everything else is fine, but unlike Let it Bleed, I think the non-hits are more filler here. 3.5 Stars, rounding down. A lotta misogyny on this album (even though Under My Thumb is a great tune), so, not sure what to do with that...

The first half of this album has some problematic songs (Stupid Girl) that just aren't great. The back half though has some decent songs that show off the transition from the Britpop of The Beatles to a more rock sound. These songs are certainly better than Let It Bleed, so 3 stars.

This was okay? I honestly didn't find any of it memorable, but that could have been by the nature of my listening to it while making bagels

This is alright, but it's kind of basic, and it's thin beyond the singles. It came out in 1966, which is really early for rock history, and the bar for what constituted innovation at that point was pretty low. On the two strongest tracks, "Paint it Black" and "Under My Thumb" (both pretty nice songs) that innovation is just using an atypical instrument, sitar on the former and glock on the latter. That'll do it. Outside of that, it's pretty basic early-British-invasion stuff, and I don't think it stands out of a crowd. This is sort of an unfair comparison, because these are two of the greatest CDs ever recorded, but compare it to "Rubber Soul" or "Pet Sounds", it just doesn't have anywhere near the depth. And because rock music quality improved markedly between the early 60s and roughly 1970, it's only the very best stuff from the earlier part of that period that can hold up head-to-head against later material. Two things that I think are noteworthy. One, the lyrics have a really, really nasty tone to them - "Stupid Girl" is cruel, "Under My Thumb" is misogynistic, "Paint it Black" is nihilistic, it goes on and on - despite some upbeat major-key numbers, no song is what I would call "positive", very much unlike many other 60s contemporaries. The other thing is it has a real diversity of sound - they've got some basically country ("High And Dry"), some weird British musical hall ("Lady Jane"), some kind of standard classic rock, and then some "other". It's nice diversity, but it also makes it feel kind of scattered. Overall it's fine, but not one I would've pulled out of a crowd.

RIP Brian Jones

Paint it Black - iconic song. Great stuff. Stupid Girl - Kind of Beatlesesque. Slightly dodgy lyrics - maybe a bit sexist? Lady Jane - not what I was expecting - much more acoustic. Nice melody. Related to Henry VIII? Under My Thumb Doncha Bother Me - like this. Very bluesy. Think - liked this as well. Didn't like Going Home that much - too long. A bit repetitive. Probably a 3.5 out of 5.

I love the Stones, but honestly, if they hadn't gone on to make some truly great music, no one would be listening to or talking about this album. Its fine, but not top 1000.

i thought it was fine! a nice mid-60s rock album, pretty straightforward. the most interesting songs to me were the ones that used unconventional instruments, and the rest i could mostly take or leave. for some reason, the Rolling Stones have never really scratched that itch in my brain the same way a band like the Beatles have, but to be fair I am just starting to dive into their discography- so maybe that will change as time goes on and I get further into this list.

It was fine, didn’t hook me as much as i would have liked but it had some good stuff on it. Favorite tracks: Stupid Girl, Going Home (very experimental which I like), Out of Time, and Take It or Leave It.

Enjoyed it, some recognizable tracks for this non rolling Stones fan

Oké but not going to listen to it except for paint it black ofc quiche is a very good song me likey

Decent but nothing special.

Increasingly not too pleased when these albums come up - they seem not to be my thing - but this is a decent collection of songs

I guess this is like their first “great” album… stones have always bored me to death and the more i listen to them the less i like em!

Paint It Black is the best song on here. The rest is decent but they have misogynistic lyrics that made me quite uncomfortable...

Aftermath has a few solid tracks, but most of it didn’t stick with me. Including the UK version on this list does a disservice to everyone, it leaves out “Paint It Black,” arguably their best song. Without it, the album feels incomplete and less impactful.

I only had Sticky Fingers this week. Clear to see the evolution. Aside from Mother's Little Helper and Under My Thumb, this album is just Beatles covers

This was a great surprise. I've always thought of the Stones as a great singles band, not so for albums. The songs hold together well from start to finish. The production is tight and sounds fresh for 1965. My problem with the Stones is that they become the comedy Stones. Not so here. This is a band that in every true sense. Even Mick comes across as a superb singer, and not a cartoon character.

Spotify link has this without Paint it Black. Even so it's a blah effort. Wasn't until Beggars Banquet that this band really took off

Decent album. Ofc intro track is a classic. Maybe would've wished for more experimentation in the rest of the album rather than just rock and roll. Bit, can't go wrong with abit of classic rock. Last song was kinda cool too

6/10 paint it black is among my favorite stones songs. The rest is fine. 1-21-2025

Man, these guys were pissed! I wonder who hurt Mick & Keith, leading to a somewhat misogynistic listen. Having said that, the songs are solid, especially with this being the first album of theirs that’s all original songs, no covers. For a band that’s been active for decades now, they have multiple “eras” that allow you to dive into their discography at multiple inroads, ranging from their early Blues influenced albums to more pop-based eighties sheen and everything in between. This stage isn’t my favorite (their early/mid seventies apex would be my choice), but I definitely respect their growth from their roots. You can almost sense what was to come. Here, the album strikes me as uneven. But the highlight go high. Favorite cuts for me are “Paint It Black”, “Under My Thumb”, “Doncha Bother Me”, “Flight 505”, and “It’s Not Easy”. I give it 3 out of 5 stars.

1. Under my thumb 2. Paint it black 3. Lady Jane

A couple all time greats like paint it black and under my thumb but some of the others fall flat. Probably great at the time but nothing I would consider foundational to todays music

Like the “hits” for classic rock reference. Early sound is classic early Stones. Probly wouldn’t have made it so big if released today. Thought provoking in that respect

Forward-thinking instrumentals that sound polished. A big downside is that this is the UK version that doesn't include "Paint It Black".

Disappointingly sexist.

6/10 Favorite Tracks: Paint It Black, Flight 505, It's Not Easy Least Favorite Tracks: High and Dry, Stupid Girl
