Reviews (page 7 of 13)

Classic stones album. Although they have better.

pretty mid for such a great band, and like....kinda really sexist, even for the time period

While I do like The Stones, this isn’t their best work. Paint It Black is by far the best track and a banger, but the others don’t really stand out to me in the grand scheme of things.

Paint It Black is a top tier song, but other than that, it's just a decent album and nothing more than that to me.

3, not terrible but also not great

EH, some good stuff but I don't see it as ground-breaking like some seem to feel.

It's aight but wish it was more melodic. Fav song it's not easy

I really wanted to love this. These songs occasionally sound like something Lennon/McCartney would have wrote. However, the production is significantly worse and Mick’s voice just isn’t that great. There are some good tracks here, but I wanted to like it way more than I did.

3 stars and only because I love Paint It Black so much. When they're good, they're really good, when they're bad they're awful!

Fine. First line of the first song is.... “What a drag it is getting old” It’s my birthday today.

Meh. Does have Paint it Black, tho.

Paint it Black but then Lady Jane but back to Under My Thumb. The Stones flip-flop from classic rock tunes to fairly average at best on this. Always felt it was best to cherry pick RS songs

Also not UNhappy I listened to this.

achei um saco de ouvir. imemoravel.

5/10 - Yeesh, some of those lyrics…

Early Stones, and only 43 minutes!! Hallelujah!! I listened to the UK version, which starts with Mother's Little Helper, which is a good start. ‘Stupid Girl’ and 'Lady Jane' I could do with missing, then we get to Under My Thumb, a classic. The US version has Paint It, Black which everyone knows is a fantastic song and one of my all-time favourites. Overall, good for its time, but not enough great tunes apart from those 2 to warrant a high mark. 3 stars

I'm someone who's a little skeptical of The Stones. Through this list I've heard their debut, which was mostly R&B covers that I thought were whatever. And I've heard Exile On Main Street, which had a couple of excellent songs, but otherwise it felt like The Stones wanted me to think they were from New Orleans badly enough that it was distracting. This catches The Stones at a point where they still had a base of British Pop-Rock, but they were clearly drifting towards blusier waters. And I think this is my favorite of the three. Full disclosure: I know the UK edition is pictured here, but I listened to the US version. Firstly, Paint It Black is one of my favorite Stones songs. Second, the tighter track-list, which removes some bloat gives the full picture a better chance with me. I think this was a good call. Paint It Black is definitely still my favorite song here. There's basically nothing like it: its basically a jangly, South Asian inspired proto-punk song. It's dark and mysterious and weirder than it gets credit for, and I dont know how The Stones managed to write it in a vacuum. Even if I dont think they can top Paint It Black, the other songs here are still good. The melodies on Stupid Girl and the xylophone on Under My Thumb are the first things I've heard that finally make the Beatles comparison make sense. Donghae Bother Me, Flight 505, and High and Dry are really great blues rock songs. And Going Home is really brought to life by its fevered performances: it makes for an awfully brisk 11 minutes. I dont think every song here is this exciting, but enough are that I enjoyed this pretty thoroughly. I will also say, I find a lot of the lyrics here compelling, but they are frequently *so* bitter that they are completely unrelatable. This does make the album more interesting, but it also isn't a *great* look, so it may call this factor neutral. Will I eventually make it all the way on The Rolling Stones? Maybe. We'll see.

Love the Stones but have never listened to this album straight through before. Couple huge hits and the rest totally passable, though not going to rank among their best.

Generic Rolling Stones music. Sounds a bit dated and basic compared to their peak era albums. Wouldn’t listen again despite a couple of great tracks.

Good stuff, except for that last song that just kept going on and on and on without adding much at all

3/5 - Paint It, Black is fantastic, aside from that nothing stood out

this is the Stone's first album with all original songs. personally, other than "Mother's Little Helper" and "Under My Thumb" nothing really sticks out. Maybe "Stupid Girl", but that's about it.

Ehhh... For the time I'm sure it was good and relatively ahead of its time. It does feel a bit dated and not really timeless. The two singles are BY FAR the best songs on here. I do like how bluesy it is and sounds like Zeppelin I well before Zeppelin I. The Rolling stones never cease to amaze me with their ability to mix rock, country, and blues into just about every album.

Not my favourite era of Stones. Obviously a couple of great tracks but mostly similar and poor themes covered. Too much denigration of women and the protracted final track was an ache to listen to.

Not too keen on the Rolling Stones as I think a lot of their stuff sounds the same. I do like a handful of their songs though! None of which were on the album unfortunately. With that being said and sounding like I hate them, I did enjoy what this album had to offer.

Some Stones fans will take this as blasphemy, but this was just ok generic blues rock. Better stuff came later in the Stones career. But I guess this may have seemed more groundbreaking at the time. There are a few bangers here.

A bit all over the place. Stones trying to find their way but ultimately doing their natural stuff well

Quite good however can be a bit repetitive and the lyrics have aged terribly, how lovely is it to have misogyny in almost every song. There are some great tunes (under My thumb) but some are forgettable 3.5/5

Pretty enjoyable blues, but not something I'd reach for.

mid now, probably spectacular in 66

Ohh wait I know Paint It, Black, great song. The rest of the album ain’t bad either.

Ascoltato a metà, recupererò

some hits but the average song is not great

gimme the kinks any day over this. there were a couple songs that stood out, but the rest feels like a product of the era.

I can't help thinking this would have been raw as hell sounding in 1966. They're snotty and they're digging deep for riffs. You feel like they're hitting their stride and we're witnessing this band's evolution. Good entry for this list.

Album No. 0129 on my list. Even though I’m very well aware of their cultural significance, I’m not that much into the Rolling Stones. Hence, I had had no experience with any of the songs on “Aftermath”. With my limited Stones background, I guess this is what I would a 60s stones album would sound like. You got Mick Jagger’s classic singing style, you got your classic rhythms, you got your classic occasional “exotic” instruments, you got your classic guitar styles, with just limited electric guitar though. Hence I get why this album is in this list. Quite frankly though, I found the songs themselves to be a little repetitive, none really stood out to me that much. That doesn’t mean they’re bad, but I would have expected some songs that are more… well… important, a little more catchy. Maybe this holds true only for the British version of this album, because I saw that “Paint It, Black” is included on the American version. Will add “Mother’s Little Helper”, “Under My Thumb”, and “Flight 505” to my playlist. 3/5 stars.

Have the Stone ever put together a fully great album a la the Beatles? Honestly, not sure. But this isn't it. We start off with one of the most blistering opening tracks ever, and frankly, one of the Stones best in Paint It, Black. Could it get better from there? One could argue that anything following that would be a letdown. The rest isn't bad. But it's not great, it's not amazing, it's not one of the best albums ever. But Paint It, Black probably deserves a star on its own.

I enjoyed this album! Lots of good songs.

I listened to the US version which doesn't have "Mother's Little Helper" or "Out of Time" but DOES have "Paint It Black." Either way, there's not a lot beyond the hits and it plods along, especially with the closing song "Goin Home" which goes on way too long. Still, this album deepens and varies the Stones sound even if not in the same class as other '66 releases like "Rubber Soul" and "Pet Sounds."

Paint It Black is terrific, I really like It's Not Easy too, but this just lacks the fire and funkiness of their later output, no other songs here really made any impression on me.

3/5 A lot of blues and proto-rock inspiration shining through. Solid, but nothing mind blowing.

kinda zoned out

Under My Thumb is very cringe, as the kids say.

Some of the greatest songs of the stones but also some fillers.

only very few good songs, the rest is a snooze fest.

3 - good but uninspiring

Rolling Stones have a good sound

I feel like it should be higher and there are some bangers but idk it didn’t hit too hard for me

There’s nothing wrong with this album, but something about it was missing for me. It didn’t really excite me while listening to it. There were a few songs where I was intrigued but the majority of the album just happened. Sonically it’s good and I had no complaints, but overall I just didn’t feel much of anything throughout my listen.

im a stupid girl ill own it. under my thumb is such a banger & i cant believe UK didnt have paint it black on this one.

There are some classics on this - but overall it is pretty dated and forgetable. The American version with paint it black is clearly superior to the Uk version.

Mick Jagger is trying his hardest. And so am I.

Pretty cool. Feels more like the Stones than their first few albums which were full of blues covers and not well produced. This still has some of that but the sound has matured more into what they would be known for. A few tracks were too damn long though. Would have been better if they would have put both Mother’s Little Helper and Paint It Black on here and cut down some of the blues jams like Going Home. That track was painfully long. Also Stupid Girl is a bit cringey and mean. Even back in the misogynistic 60s I have to imagine that track didn’t go down well.

*listened before the project* UK version cover. Still, I think This album should started from paint it black

I listened to the UK version of this album, and while there are some decent tracks, it’s not a standout album. Jagger and Richards are still finding their ways as song writers here, and clearly influenced by Lennon and McCartney. It’s a step in the right direction but instrumentally it’s a bit too experimental ‘66.

Not my things, the uk version of this album doesnt hit for me. Maby the us version will. It doesnt have enough to keep my intrest. It isnt bad perse. Just kinda uninspiring

It was a funny album, wouldn't call it the best work of the stones. Simultaneously I can really tell how foundational the stones and this album have been for Rock. Overall a nice album but not something I'd put up again very quickly. 6.5/10

this sounds a lot more like the beatles than I thought it would. its fine...? not amazing.

Not their best, not their worst.

like most Rolling Stones albums, starts of great then takes a nose dive. this one kinda sucks. 3 stars solely because of Under my Thumb

There's a sound to this album, where the guitar draws on an American blues/ bluegrass, woven into the rock n roll sound that probably sounded new, exciting and exotic in the UK, as all American-influenced culture did in the 60s. The sound of the Stones was also led by Mick Jagger's hedonistic howling that stood in marked contrast to the crooning that was expect of the popular music stars of the day. But now, 60 years later, the majority of the album sounds somehow less remarkable, possibly because these sounds have proliferated since, having been refined and repurposed by other artists inspired by the Stones. And in the light of the 21st Century, the misogyny of many of the lyrics leaves a poor taste. Indeed, song no. 2 is titled Stupid Girl. Yes ,the 90s band Garbage have a song with the same title but those lyrics are about a woman reflecting on her own silly moves, but when a bloke sings disparagingly about the choices of a young woman, it sours, and feels like something between slut shaming and verbal abuse. 'Under my Thumb' and 'It ain't Easy' still sound excellent, but much of the rest of the album doesn't sound as well conceived, more a loose experiment with the sound that they may have come up with for each of the songs here recorded.

Top 3 - Paint It, Black - Lady Jane - Under My Thumb

3. Good but far from their best work

The more Stones albums I get, the more I'm convinced that they are a better singles band than an album band.

This album shows the Stones at their best (“Under My Thumb” and “Out of Time”) and absolute worst (“Stupid Girl”). Put in other words, this album captures the contradictions found in a group of cruel young men who occasionally made exceptional music.

Good. Only one song really stood out to me. Classic Rolling Stones early stuff. I like it better than their later albums because it holds true to their blues-rock background.

My favourites of the Rolling Stones albums I’ve had generated so far. An easy listen.

I liked this better than our last Stones album. 3.5 rounded down.

This has always just been an OK Stones album for me. A few decent hits, but no classics — i.e., they are rarely performed live. The 11 minute track “Going Home” is a bit boring, trying perhaps to emulate a 10+ minute track from Dylan. Nice use of Brian Jones on non-guitar instruments. This will be my lowest rated of all our Stones albums.

Not for me, but good for what it is

I'm guessing this is the American version of AFTERMATH, not the English one. It has some indisputably great songs like "Paint It Black" and "Lady Jane." Also, some really good ones like "I Am Waiting" and "Think." And then there's a big fat piece filler called "Goin' Home," which never really gets going anywhere. Then there's "Under My Thumb" and "Stupid Girl." The former is great musically, especially because of Brian Jones's contributions. The latter has a good tune. But even without being particularly woke, the lyrics just bum me out. I don't throw around terms like misogynist easily, but this is that. So what do you do when some songs are five-stars and others are twos?

Views of this album as on par with the likes of Revolver and Pet Sounds are clearly overblown - it has three classic tracks, but also a lot of filler. Still, it does have what feels like a groundbreaking darkness, both in its ability to conjure a hopeless mindset in ‘Paint it Black’ (or ‘Mother’s Little Helper’ on the UK version) and in the casual cruelty of ‘Stupid Girl’ and ‘Under My Thumb’. Otherwise, it’s fun that Brian Jones was bringing unorthodox instruments into the mix, but it’s not quite pronounced enough an effort to make real impression almost 60 years later. A small but significant step towards the band they would soon become. Favorite song: ‘I Am Waiting’

Listened 1/1/26, wish i could give partial stars 3.8

Of the three Rolling Stones albums I've listened to for this so far, Aftermath has been my favorite. I'm probably still good with the greatest hits, but this album has more of my personal highlights than the others ("Paint It, Black," of course, but also "Under My Thumb" and "I am Waiting"). There's no reason "Going Home" needs to be 11 minutes, though.

Paint it Black is epic. Under My Thumb is pretty great. The rest was bordering on dumb. Having heard a lot of 60s groups on this list, I can see why the Rolling Stones felt like the real deal back then, but they've never really done too much for me.

I’m not the biggest fan of Mick’s vocals, but I probably prefer the younger Mick to the, erm, mature Mick. Here, I appreciate the use of less-mainstream instruments. Marimba FTW! Like nearly every Stones album, this is—for me, anyway—a 3.5-star album.

Couple of bangers, but drags on a little long for my liking

Nice, old-fashioned Stones.

It’s okay.

Started with a thought that I don’t understand why they considered legendary. Then heard Under My Thumb and caught myself shaking following the beat. Nice experience

Ok, so some of the rolling stones songs are pretty good, but I don't think this album is reflective of how good they can be musically. It's not an awful album but in my opinion, lots of the songs just sounded the same and the vocals were kind of more "talky" than singing lol.

Not my favorite Rolling Stones record but one I was familiar with. Under my Thumb always sounds so unnerving. Love that one. The album does have a nice vibe of garage rock which is nice

Shouldn't it properly be titled "After-Maths"?

Ffs jagger

I liked it. If I had been alive in the 60s I think I would really like it. Nothing really grabbed me, but I can appreciate the evolution of their sound.

Pretty cool record, definitely a couple bangers. Only think I knew under my thumb and it’s def not my fav on this listen. Most memorable moment is the hi hat on high and dry - if you’re looking for the best sound ever created, look no further. Lady Jane and What to Do are nice wit it!! Listened to while walking through wychwood and on 63 bus.

For an album to start with Paint It Black and head straight into absolute drivel like Stupid Girl should be a crime. There are some really half-decent Stones tracks on here, but a whole lot of crap too. Like lazy, poorly written garbage. It's not possible to rate this higher than 3 stars.

Alright

Not the best Stones album but you can hear it getting there on some tracks. Too many tracks were too poppy/60's jingle-jangle. Shame paint it black wasn't on it, that was their pinnacle in the earlier 60's.

I liked this, but it's pretty tame sounding for 60s rock. Had the UK version since I'm not offended by a long record. It's funny to read that people might be offended by lyrics about women or allusions to a man, who, if he even existed, died 2000 years ago. Oh no! And they call us the snowflake generation. This was decent anyway.

Too much about women

56/1001 First listen. I’ve read the reviews and “misogynistic” was in there a LOT! So i’m ready. Also one reviewer really, really, REALLY hates Mick Jagger! Never been much of a fan of early Stones myself. The singles are fine. I recognize a fair amount of songs on both versions of this album. Hard to get into new old stuff at this point though. 5/10

Sex drugs and rock n roll

I liked this - enjoyable music to have on in the background, although nothing really grabbed me too much. I haven’t listened to heaps of Rolling Stones before asides from the big songs, so maybe there was a little missing for me listening to this in terms of oomph but still good.

Of course, the album features the all-time classic Paint it Black, however, it is only on the US release and I think it's weird to release only mostly the same songs in two countries and still call it the same album. Apart from the respective first tracks, there are only solid to forgettable mid 60s rock songs in both releases.

Fine, not even close to the best stones though

Enjoyable. Songs I hadn't heard much didn't jump out at me

Mixed results, but the blueprint is clearly in place.

Sometimes, worse than the incident itself.

This is the Rolling Stones' answer to Rubber Soul, and it certainly is complementary to it. But it is angrier, more subversive, more akin to The Kinks than the prettyboy Beatles. There is an undercurrent of societal unhappiness and the bohemian discontent of pop stars stuck in hotels with groupies, disillusioned and cut off from the establishment. Toxic masculinity and chauvinism drive many of the songs ("Stupid Girl", "Under My Thumb", "Think", "Out of Time"). Are these really the values the Stones (Jagger and Richards as main songwriters) hold, or is it a character played up for the public? It's hard to tell, and that's not good. These views did not go away in subsequent albums, and disrespect to female partners in their personal lives was prevalent. I don't know enough of the Stones to speculate further, but I will say that much of it goes beyond the typical level of misogyny in blues and rock. Really, it is the emergence of Brian Jones as a psychedelic multi-instrumentalist and as a cultural leader in the group that makes this a breakthrough album. There are also no covers on here. Lyrically, songs like "Under My Thumb" are tough to get behind, but sonically, the marimba hook is just so so good. The rhythm section of Watts and Wyman is also outstanding and groovy throughout. I also love the fuzz bass that Richards uses on songs like "Flight 505". Also a special shoutout to "I Am Waiting" which to me is an underrated song, and features an Appalachian dulcimer. This sits between a 3 and 4 for me, and I would say the UK version is better than the US version (songs like "Mother's Little Helper" fit the tone better than "Paint It Black"). I'm rounding down to 3 just because I can't get behind many of the lyrics.

A couple “innovative” songs (leaving behind the basic rock and roll that made them popular).

I’m annoyed that the UK version of this album opens with Mother’s Little Helper and the US version of this album opens with Paint It Black as those are two of my favourite Stones songs and should be on both versions of the album. After listening to the UK version of this album, I am starting to question whether I do enjoy earlier Stones more than their later work as I stated in my review of their self-titled. I do like the more raw, psychedelic sides of this album quite a bit, and it's interesting as they're definitely finding their sound on this album, but it does kind of drag on a bit. I probably should have stuck to listening to the shorter US version of the album. I’m honestly starting to think that the Stones might actually be more of a greatest hits band for me. They’ve got a lot of tracks I enjoy, but I’m never really drawn to their full studio albums. That said, I do still like this album, I just can't see myself returning to it too frequently.

I didn’t know there was a Stones album called Aftermath. My guess was that it was some 90s release that I had overlooked. Wrong. “Paint It Black” and “Under My Thumb” - obvious classics. I like my Stones a little later than this.

Was okay, had a couple of high points but I think I don't have much of an appreciation for British rock, may listen to again.

its okay

Alright

Some bops and some flops

It’s good, it’s better than their earlier stuff and you can sort of see where they are headed into the peak of their career

this musical group might be a little overglazed

2 sommets (paint it black, under my thumb) dans cet album par ailleurs moyen. Ça sauve un peu la note ! 3.5/5

Sympathy For The Devil was 2 years later. JFC. Going Home is a mess. Under My Thumb and Paint It Black hold up the rest.

Paint it black mocno wyciąga ocenę na 3. Reszta dosyć podobna do siebie wzajemnie. Miejscami brzmi jak country.

Under my thumb, lady Jane, good songs but overall not my cuppa.

I've never gotten SUPER into the Stones. They've always been "fine" to me. Nothing special... just fine. Their early 70s work is excellent, but this album is shaky. Some of it feels incomplete, and the production is muddy on certain tracks. Again, not good - just fine. 5/10

7/10 Highlights: Mother's Little Helper Lady Jane Under My Thumb Out Of Time

7/10 Highlights Under my Thumb Think

Solid opening. Then under my thumb is a belter. Quite a lot of filler ?

Love the rolling stones as icons but most of their early music is just meh. 7.5/10.

I love the Stones. But I am legitimately conflicted over this album. This album seems to be the bridge between the older "bluesy" cover band version of the Stones (that I appreciate!!) and the bad-ass gritty version of the Stones that I fell in love with. But I do NOT have a lot of love for Aftermath was not terribly impressed with this “compilation of songs”. Don’t get me wrong; there is some genius in this album. Paint It Black (goes without saying), Under My Thumb, and Doncha Bother Me are standouts. But for me, this album was too damn schizophrenic and just didn’t come together.

some standards there...fun.

Got to be one of the best album openers of all time. And the closing track, a glimpse of that jammy energy that the Stones do best. Rest of the album is.. good. It's alright. The Stones do offer much more than your neighbourhood Blues rock band, such a wild mix of timbres, but not *that* much more at this point in their career. Still a very solid album. 6.5 / 10 Best track/s: Paint it Black, Goin' Home, Lady Jane

Good album. Some notable singles on here. The Rolling Stones are classic, but not everything about their sound does it for me. Lady Jane and Out of Time were my positive discoveries from this one.

I had no idea that this album was as early as it was - I knew "Paint it Black" and "Under My Thumb" of course, but thought they were later 60s if not early 70s. "Paint it Black" is by far the strongest track here, remaining relevant and a strong cultural influence that pops up in movies and commercials nearly 60 years later. Also, it's such a damn good song. I imagine Morrissey cut his teeth on this, leading him to the dark lyrics he would later pen. "Under My Thumb" is a fun little tune with the xylophone, but I never honestly listened to the lyrics closely until now. Um, creepy and completely inappropriate...Jagger sings about how he can be thanked for "reigning in" his former free-thinking girl so that now she "does just what she's told" and is "a squirming dog who's just had her day," and yet scores of women still wanted to crawl into bed with this louse? Yuck! Aside from that vibe, there are some other good songs here, but I can't give this anything more than a 3.

Pretty good tbh. Paint It, Black was definitely the standout for me. Transitioning straight from that into Stupid Girl is actually insane though

Classic rock

Better than the other stones album on here

Just a lot of classic rock on the b sides, nothing that was piquing my interest.

I don't really know what to make of this album. The early stones always sound like they are trying to be edgier than the Beatles. There are some really good moments on this album and you can hear what they are becoming. All in all though, I'd rather listen to Rubber Soul

My take on The Rolling Stones is that they have some undeniably good hits. The rest is just filler. I haven’t had a full album by them that has made me change my perspective on this. Not unlistenable. Just not something I care to repeat the whole album again.

Why the UK version of this album? The US version has Paint it Black which is the difference between a good album(3 stars) and a VERY good album(4 stars). This is one of the few Stones records I own. This is before they became a parody of themselves.

Couple gems.

Fairly generic. "Under My Thumb" stands out but little else does.

Some proper iconic tracks here, and some unremarkable filler. A Stones album I don't have, so interested to hear it. Their blues heritage comes through strong. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ❌️ ★★★☆☆ (5/10)

There are some cool songs on here and I like the experimentation on a few of them. They'll do better things but this is the start of something. 7/10

Actually not as traumatic an experience as I thought it might be. I don't cope well with Jagger's voice. One or two songs at a time is about my limit, but this wasn't horrendous. It's a lot more folksy than I imagined it would be, and musically it's right up my alley. There are so many great bands I wish I could switch a different singer into, these are one such band.

It's another Stones album. 3

A Rolling Stones album that I found to be workable. Out of the Stones albums I've listened to, this one seems to be the most cohesive. I liked the psychedelic touches to some of the songs.

This is a solid album from the early days of The Rolling Stones. It checks all the boxes. An overall bluesy feel with some psychedelic tones sprinkled throughout. It gets right to it with the opening track Mother's Little Helper. The lyrics are a bit silly and immature. Not really surprising as the band is still pretty young and it's their first full album of original music. Maybe their perspectives on relationships are fairly naive at this point in life. Overall, not their most complex work, but a cool vibe to listen to at a party or while working. 3.5 Stars

Aftermath isn’t a bad album — it’s got some solid tracks and a few moments where the Stones’ swagger really comes through. Songs like “Under My Thumb” and “Paint It, Black” (on the U.S. version) show why people talk about this record as a turning point for the band, with more original material and a bit of experimentation. Still, it doesn’t quite feel like their best work. The energy’s there, but not every song hits, and some of it just feels dated. Honestly, I’ve never totally gotten the hype about the Stones — they’re clearly talented, but Aftermath feels more like an interesting snapshot of its time than a truly great album.

105 Amo Paint it black.

I want my 11 minutes back from listening to Jagger catawall on about Going Home to Bang his girl. That's the most cliche bullshit blues "jam" I've ever heard. It's sounds like piss poor Grateful Dead expression but with Mick's voice "jamming" UGH!! Otherwise the hits are good & the rest is hit and miss. The band behind Mick should get more kudos for they prop up more so.

Very weird that this album had such a massive difference between the UK and US release of this album. Paint It Black is legendary and it's not on the album that was included on the list for some reason Standouts Mother's Little Helper Paint It Black (US version of the album) Under My Thumb 3/5

I found their previous album to sound dated but aftermath specially in its first few track was much more to my speed

This is the final Stones album for me on this list. I def agree with the inclusion as this is the first one that sounds like the Stones we know and like. Still a singles band.

Can't get the image out of my head of boomers dancing to this music and then proceeding to grow up, gain power and wealth and use it to wreck the world for everyone who came after. First bunch of songs are all about women doing the wrong thing. Not doing the their job well (Mother's Little Helper). Too pretty / haughty to take interest in the Mick (Stupid Girl). Shifting power dynamics - now mick is in control (Under My Thumb)

Listened Before? N Good album. I haven't spent much time with early Stones work and this one is a good intro. I enjoyed it, especially the hit Under My Thumb. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Under My Thumb

Irgendwie noch ein witziger Song.

Not bad

Not a huge Stones fan, but this album has some decent songs. Definitely of its time, a bit ahead of it, just like the Beatles. The Stones have always shone bright in their singles. This album is no different. From the sitar use in Paint it Black to the xylophone in Under My Thumb, the most interesting contributions from the Stones come when they experiment. But outside of this, when the produce the same kind of sound as The Zombies or the Kinks you forget why they are lumped into the same lauded and mythic group of artists as the Beatles, Zepplin, and Bowie.

Some classics. Obviously love Paint it, black, but hate the casual misogyny of stupid girl.

This is a “catching up” album it seems. Released the same year as Rubber Soul, Aftermath catches up to the sound of the Beatles in 1963. This is their “With The Beatles.” Like that album, this is a collection of early rock n roll tunes with tight structure and melody, and is pretty boring compared with what came after. I can’t comment on the lyrics because I completely ignored them. Not bad, not that interesting.

point2.

Somewhat underwhelmed. This isn’t a patch on the big 4 albums

I found this really quite boring…. idk

This is probably some great rock and roll in 1966. I was bit bored by most of it.

So I initially listened to this while stuck in SFO on a flight cancellation. Bad mood. There are a number of hits and familiar pieces. Not entirely my preference but I recognize historical context and more good than bad. 3/5

Classic Rock Album.

Yep, that's the Rolling Stones. Not really any different to the other albums on here.

6/10 The Stones got a lot better by the end of the 60s. This album has some fairly weak songwriting - "Stupid Girl" and "Under My Thumb" are nasty little songs and "Going Home" is a pointless 12mins ramble that would have nothing going for it if it was 3mins long. Why would you do that? Much of the recording is dated and sounds like it was done on rubbish handheld tape cassette recorders. Maybe I'm harsher on this because I have high expectations of such a big band, but it really isn't all that good

Not bad but final track boring.

This one grew on me a lot actually

Heard of them, didn’t think much of the album.

Day 65 I have listened to this album perhaps twice before. Classic stones sound that I enjoy and I could also hear Dylan influence in some tracks. The album starts off strong and starts to fade a bit cause they all sound quite the same but I still enjoyed the listen. (3.5/5)

Good have not heard this Rolling stones. I listened the US version. I never really read why there were two fairly different releases between the US and UK.

5.5/10 Highlight: Paint it Black

I've never heard this album before! But it was really good! Just kinda sounded like classic stones!

Alright ... I didn't listen to this album yesterday. It was Friday. I really didn't feel like harshing my vibes with The Rolling Stones, the most overrated band in the history of the world. But I feel I'm familiar enough with it to give it a rating. It's a three. That's what the Stones do. They make albums that are threes.

Some of that lyrical content is red flag material, which is especially unfortunate for Under My Thumb. The back half is way stronger than the first half. I don’t care for most of it besides the opener. Out of Time is great, along with I Am Waiting and Take It or Leave It.

LOVE paint it black but the rest is unfortunately much less good

*Paint it Black is awesome *Goin home is verrrrry long *Decent rock and roll but didn't hook me very much

After looking at the song titles I decided the US shorter version was the one to listen to today. I have a love/hate relationship with The Stones. I think they have a handful of great albums, mainly the run from Beggar's Banquet to Exile On Main Street, with a smattering of excellent songs on some of the later albums. I also think they are mean spirited, misogynistic, sloppy, and very repetitive. This album is all of those things, with the only positive being early use of interesting instrumentation. All of this is done to better effect in their later albums, however. It's not a bad album per se, but it is a frustrating one. They were coming into their own, but just couldn't yet get out of their own way.

Pretty uninteresting for the rolling stones. Mother's little helper is a horrifically underrated song in the stone's catalogue. Under my thumb is pretty good aswell. A lot of this album just sounds like background music though. 6/10 Favourite: Mother's Little Helper Least Favourite: Take It or Leave It

Not their best, not their worst

It's kind of nice to hear some deeper cuts from The Stones, rather than just their big hits. Like many selections on this list, I believe this record is best enjoyed by more hardcore fans than the casual listener. A decent list, but a bigger fan would enjoy this far more than I did. I've always been more of a Beatles guy anyway. ;)

Better than Coldplay

3.2 - gal nieko, bet ne man

Mick Jagger's vocal charisma saves this from simply being Rubber Soulless

I’ve never found the Stones that interesting musically. They charted a bunch of hits, but most of their albums never pulled together for me. Their best albums hit 4 stars for me, but this is not one of those.

i just don’t feel much of anything connection wise towards this music! i know it’s foundational and i understand its importance and it’s definitely solid but… i don’t feel a draw towards it that much. folks who were teenagers in the 60s are going to getch me for this for sure

Meh. Couple of hits

thoughts: (this is for the US version.) maybe this project will change my mind but even with the accolades and all, i’m just not a rolling stones guy. i do love “paint it black” and honestly i really enjoyed “going home” but otherwise, it’s… fine. the more bluesy stuff was cool but otherwise, it came and went and it’s just not for me. songs: “paint it black”, “doncha bother me”, “going home” rating: 6.1/10

A few fun songs mean it's good enough

Peaks with Paint it Black, but the rest is still solid.

So much to talk about! First off - musically this thing is so hit or miss. Typical early Stones. One song is unique and still holds up 60 years later, and the next is just a complete waste of time. There are some boilerplate 60's rockers, some bluesier numbers, and some country-inspired tunes. There's even a clear Beatles rip off ("Flight 505"). But most of it is pretty forgettable. "Paint it Black" (on the US cut), "Mother's Little Helper" (on the UK), "I am Waiting," "Under My Thumb," and "Going Home" are musically interesting and diverse, and will stick with you. The rest you'll forget in 24 hours. I want to call out "Going Home" for a minute. It's so incredibly dopey for the first two or three minutes. The chorus is just so brick-wall dumb. And then....it transforms. And becomes something really interesting. It's like the joke that goes on way too long but the longer it goes on the funnier it gets. It's great. Thematically this album is very tricky. The misogyny is a thread that runs through nearly every song. The obvious examples being "Under My Thumb" and "Stupid Girl," but just about every other song shows an adolescent hatred of women that's pretty embarrassing. I guess they were having a hard time with all the groupies they were pulling. SHRUG. THREE STARS

I get the Stones v Beatles war, and how the Beatles won. Listening to each of the Beatles albums I’ve had so far I recognise at least 90% of the songs. Yet listening to a Stones album then I recognise about 10%. Thousands of radio stations and playlists can’t be wrong. This particular Stones album took a few listens to get into - apart from the 10% (Mothers Little Helper/Under My Thumb). On the whole I like it. Apart from ‘Going Home’. That one single track must have been the launch pad for a million Jagger impressions. Totally over-acted. And too long. Drags the whole album down to a 3.

They can make some decent music when they aren’t being complete tools

I find with a lot of the entries from the 60’s I’m looking at them too much from a current perspective rather than a complete overlook of the album. Realistically I found this to be alright - nothing special, solid roots but nothing to make it pop. But, that’s just the time it’s being played in. If I was in the 60’s and there wasn’t too much else to obsess over, I wouldn’t mind.

A couple classics I knew of. Listenable but tbh couldn't get pulled into it. Favs: Paint in Black, Under My Thumb

Fell off during the second half for me

This was ok. I enjoyed the knock off Beatles songs. The rest were pretty boring I really don't get the hype 3 ⭐️

More fun than I've had with some other rolling Stones albums. More of their classic sound, but did get bored with the album at some point and was ready for it to be over

A few great songs and a few average songs. I listened to the UK version … I’ve loved Mother’s Little Helper since I heard the Mary Coughlan version when I was a teenager, but Paint It Black is undoubtedly a great song…. Don’t understand why they didn’t include both🤷‍♀️

Once again I listen to the stones and come away... not loving it but also enjoying it wayyyyy more than I would expect, mainly because I'd think their style of blues rock would be more of a drag than it winds up being, which I appreciate. I think part of why it clicks here is that the sound is so understated and just chill here which I enjoy more moodwise

So many Rolling Stones albums! That might sound like a complaint, but as someone who was just OK with the Stones, but wouldn't go out of my way to buy or listen to them, it's been eye-opening. As for this album, the first half is far superior to the second half. Much of the second half just sounds like a bar band doing straight-ahead old-school blues. I find it to be weak and uninteresting. The exception is the extended play out of Going Home. That jam at the end is pretty good. Listening to the full Stones albums over the last month or two has made me appreciate their experiments and modernization of old blues. Their earlier albums were young British dudes trying to be like old US blues guys and I'd say not too well. But I guess it got them in the door enough that they had time, money, and resources to experiment and make some great music. I'll listen to the singles from this album, but I don't think I'd listen to the whole thing again. Overall, the album's a three, but Paint it Black is a 4 and Under My Thumb is a fine five!

Good if you like the Stones. ok

Fun listen, I had heard “Under My Thumb” a million times, but I wasn’t expecting this record to be so bluesy! Best Track: Under My Thumb

Not my favorite Stones album, and the misogyny is awful, and there a a lot of tracks that are kinda meh. But it's still a good listen.

An early Rolling Stones album with a few catchy tunes but not a lot of risks. Just some bluesy pop music

It was fine

Would give 3.5 if I could, still maybe a little 60sish for me, but enjoyed more than dusty springfield of yesterday. Listened to the US version

I had a really hard time with this one. I can hear what is going to become the Stones that I know, but those early experiments in stereo sound are particularly jarring to me now.

Life sucks. That's why you need the song to stain everything in sight. wait a minute you are all talking about the British version? guess i don't have any space to put my personal dispair since Paint it Black is not on this. but in fact the glimmer twins' songwriting on this really inspired me a lot. you see at most of the time they sound really shite but later they become better. so i am not to worry about my terrible music skills. 3/5

First few songs are good. Under my thumb is the standout. Rest of the album is just ok.

It's fine, but I don't really get why the Rolling Stones are a big deal

This had a lot of the same problems other Rolling Stones albums we have done did, but Paint It Black is undeniably great, and I also enjoyed Under My Thumb

This album is fine, but it still feels like a transitional work. The songs tend to get a bit repetitive, though the inclusion of Paint It Black on the U.S. version gives it a significant boost.

Maybe this is an important record in the progression the Stones but other than a couple good tracks (Painted Black) it’s just good.

There's a few good songs on here, but a lot of it is forgettable. I listened to the UK version.

It's not their best, some good tracks but a fair bit of filler and under my thumb is very grim in hindsight.

The only song on this album that isn’t aping the Beatles, Beach Boys, Byrds, or Bob is paint it black. Doesn’t sound like the stones to me.

Middle of the road Stones album. None of the songs really stand out except for Under My Thumb, which stands out more for how creepy the lyrics than anything else.

I like how everything sounds, but certain moments felt sorta self indulgent

Decent album

Some good solid rock and roll, hell yeah! Starting out with a nice little song about housewives doing drugs, Mother's Little Helper was pretty funny. The rest of the album kept the energy going, good fun all the way through. Roll on, Stones. Best song: Mother's Little Helper

Vaguely misogynistic with some decent guitar. No song needs to be 11 minutes and 13 seconds long, especially not Going Home.

Didn't capture me in the way I thought it would. Not good spreadsheet music.

I don't love early Stones nearly as much as I love 1970s Stones. This was OK.

Not bad. Could have done without the last song on the album but overall it was alright.

Seems to be a thing with the Stones. The albums drag. Some great songs (although listening to Mother's Little Helper as an adult leaves a sour taste) but not all of it is that enjoyable.

i love the stones but they just have never been an album band for me. also might have listened to the wrong version of this.

This was quite good. Better than the last stones one, but it was really long, I don't need an hour of 3 minute stones tracks. The more interesting instruments really helped in - marimbas etc. A bunch of the singles are pretty good. Apparently on the American release they took 4 of the album tracks out and put paint it black in. Immediately I'd rate that album higher than this.

Never been a huge stones fan. Listening to a full album was interesting, especially to see the band beyond their greatest hits. I simultaneously understand why the band is as big as they are, but also still don’t see what all the fuss is about. Favorite song: Paint It Black

With Aftermath, the Rolling Stones delivered their first album of all Jagger/Richards originals—a bold step toward artistic self-definition in the mid-’60s British rock scene. The album is a mixed bag in terms of quality, but its stylistic range is impressive, veering from sneering satire to delicate balladry. "Mother’s Little Helper" kicks things off with a clanging, Eastern-tinged riff and a caustic commentary on suburban malaise, while "Lady Jane" floats in with Elizabethan grace, showing a softer, courtly side rarely glimpsed in their early work. Then there’s "Under My Thumb," with its slinky marimba groove and lyrics that still raise eyebrows—cocky, catchy, and unmistakably Stones. Even when it misfires, Aftermath stands as a vital document of a band stretching out and discovering the edges of its sound.

Paint it Black is really great, however every other song afterwards fell flat for me. There were a lot of questionable lyrics and odd choices. I can imagine it was really good at the time, but nowadays there's just so much better out there

Yeaaaah it's just ok, lowkey quite mid. Highlights: Paint It, Black

Decent Stones album

A couple of bangers with Paint It Black and Under My Thumb but not revolutionary like Rubber Soul or Pet Sounds

Not my cup of tea. Incredibly samey throughout and lacking any particular oomph. Reading the reviews is how I found out there is a UK vs US version. The US version has 'Paint It Black' which would immediately have given this an extra star, but I shall not update the score because that's not the version I listened too.

Quality work from a legendary band. One of those albums that doesn't hurt their legacy, but by itself, wouldn't alert the world of their nobility.

Either this album is better than some of the other stones ones or I’m falling starting to get them

Pretty good album without any standout hits. As Grant had mentioned to me that Paint It Black is on this album but not the UK version and it feels like the part that was missing

only after listening multiple times did it dawn on me that the reason I know this album (Paint It Black) isn't on the UK version. A vestige of the early album era is this fuckery labels would do with their album releases, similar to how Rubber Soul is different in the UK vs US.

3.5 stars

I Am Waiting saves this album from a 2 star. And part of my love of that song is it's use in the movie Rushmore. I listened to the UK release which didn't have Paint it Black. That would have bumped it to a 3.5, but still a 3 on this site.

Standouts Paint it Black Under My Thumb

(UK version) Full of hits, and showing that these guys had something more up their sleeves than Chuck Berry covers. There are flashes of soul, pop and psychedelia which do a great job of bringing up Carnaby St./Minis/flower dresses/all the other cliches. Gets samey and drawn out through the middle though - must have been one of 1966's longest records! Gnarly tones and cool sounds, though! Favourite tracks: Mothers Little Helper, Under My Thumb, Out of Time

Pretty good, enjoyed it but wasn't super remarkable. Going Home did not have to be 11 minutes long imo. Best song: Mother's Little Helper Notable(s): Under My Thumb

Good to decent stuff. Maybe a bit uninteresting but still was cool enough. 3 stars

It had a couple of good songs, namely Under My Thumb and Out Of Time. The rest weren't bad. A pretty satisfactory rock album all round.

Couple good tunes but not sure this is the Stones album I’d revisit

There are two versions of this album, a UK release and a US release. Thankfully these days it's easy to listen to both. Paint It Black definitely gives the US version the edge, but it's missing Mother's Little Helper which is also a great song. The rest of the album is okay. I read in the wiki that this came out shortly before Bob Dylan - Blonde on Blonde and the Beatles - Revolver... I like those albums better to be honest.

I don't know if this is because I've never been that big a Stones fan, or because I'm a big woke liberal who found 'Under My Thumb' a weird listen, but I enjoyed this a lot less than I thought I would? Paint It Black is good, there's good guitars and some fun experimental stuff here but I think I went into this with high expectations and they weren't met.

The Stones! Sadly I wasn't feeling this one too much. A lot of the songs are good but the ones that aren't are pretty boring and not my favorite. 68/10

Not my fave of theirs but still a few bangers. Quite repetitive.

I don't really like it, but I think their better albums are the early 70s ones, some bits are quite good, like the really popular one, but I think the fake American accent blues thing is just so trash, and the 11 minute song should never have seen the light of day. My favourite stuff from around this era is much more experimental (rubber soul) or doesn't try to hard too hard to be American (the Kinks or the Byrds). Its also so repetitive, and too loong, the first self-titled album was so digestible because it was like 30 minutes Favourite songs: Lady Jane, under my thumb, think. Overall around 5/10

Gotta love albums that have two different versions in separate countries. I’m assuming the book listed the UK version, considering it has a hard-on for the UK. But ultimately, I opted for the US version, because it was shorter… and because of Paint It Black. I’m not skipping that song. In reality though, it doesn’t matter. The differences is song order, as well as four songs that didn’t make the US version. Aftermath, regardless of region, was okay. Most of the songs were just kind of standard repetitive 60’s pop. Stuff like Stupid Girl and Under My Thumb were nice and catchy. But I really could have done without Going Home. Eleven minutes of Mick Jagger improvising is a hard pass from me. Honestly, it was a good call for the US version to stick it at the end. The UK version puts it in the middle. That would have made the rest of the album fatiguing. This was definitely not my favorite album from The Rolling Stones. It’s considered their breakthrough, but I think they needed more development, personally. Favorite track: Paint It Black Other hits: Under My Thumb, Stupid Girl, I Am Waiting, Out of Time

Didn’t realise this was the album that had under my thumb on it, definitely the highlight of the album. The rest wasn’t too bad nothing to right home about, still a fun listening experience

The album where The Stones matured. Still one of the greatest opening numbers to any album.

This was a nice project to run to in the morning. Nothing too spectacular but it sounded like solid timeless music.

Interesting, not 100% mine. Some songs are great though

Valeria a pena comprar este álbum em 1966 nos EUA só pra ouvir Paint it Black, I Am Waiting e Under My Thumb, as três melhores faixas do disco? Sim, valeria. 3.5/5

not my favorite stones album but I still like and appreciate they were so prolific in the mid 60s it was almost comical how many albums they popped out.

A strong start that waned. Meh, meet with a few strong songs.

Another case of a good A side followed by a mostly middling side B. Highlights throughout but they did much of this better on later albums. Definitely of its era right before the truly came into their own.

Not to bad for it's time, but nothing to note worthy. It's a fine tune

Similar issues to other Rolling Stones albums, some brilliant songs (Under My Thumb, Out Of Time, Mother's Little Helper) but plenty of rather forgettable stuff (Stupid Girl, It's Not Easy). Going Home is about 6 minutes too long as well. Not a bad listen but when you consider what The Beach Boys and The Beatles were doing that years, they seem behind.

I'm not really big on the Stones but Paint It Black is an absolute banger. This album is actually pretty solid overall. I should give it more credit.

It's probably getting a bit old nowadays, but still interesting to listen. Some beats were nice and I could find myself tapping my feet along side it.

Beggar's Banquet sounds a whole lot better doesn't it? Heh, this is the primordial stew from whence Beggars, Let It Bleed, Exile and Sticky Fingers all come from. It's not great - it's just blues and covers and blues covers. BUT, there's something else there. Brian's marimba and sitar, the beginning of real progress in song writing. In the end, it's still not quite there. A lesser Stones album for sure, Under My Thumb is great (and I listened to the UK version, so no Paint It Black for me) but the rest isn't memorable. 2.5 rounded up to 3 for me on this one.

Solid record. Some great,some filler.

Hard to believe this is the same band that had that lackluster debut album only 2 years earlier. The big songs on this one are classics. The lesser tracks are musically interesting, but lyrically a bit meh. Leaps and bounds over the self-titled album, though. Faves: "Mother's Little Helper", "Under My Thumb", "Doncha Bother Me" Meh: "I Am Waiting", "Stupid Girl"

Well it was better than the first album.

Really good album. Of course, none of the songs are as good at Paint It, Black; that song really set the tone for the album and it didn't follow suit at all which left it feeling a little disjointed to me. Overall, a very good listen.

Interesante

Early Stones which suffers a bit by comparison of what followed. Songwriting skills and musicianship were still in their infancy. Mothers Little Helper and Under My Thumb are the standouts that have best withstood the passage of time.

good album, some songs felt very bob dylan, and i guess they knew eachother, i wonder why the album is iconic outside of it being a rollingstones album, good but wouldent really die to listen again

Some gems and some filler.

A few good ones (Paint it Boack, I am Waiting, High and Dry), otherwise pretty mediocre. The second half is better than the first. Note: I listened to the American version.

Early, Mid Stones Album, but with a few classics.

I don't think I've ever listened to The Rolling Stones before this, but I wasn't too impressed with this album.

I went back and forth on the rating for this one. Some songs I really enjoyed and others kind of just droned on and on for me. 3.5

Some good songs but too much straight ahead blues for me.
