Reviews (page 6 of 13)
Watching the band evolve with their first album of originals? Part blues, rock n roll and pop. 'Under my thumb' in particular shows the huge promise here.
not my favorite stones by any means. but it is solid. “under my thumb” is great. other personal highlights are “mother’s little helper” and “i am waiting”. the u.s. version with “paint it black” is cool too. certainly gives this album another single.
5th Rolling Stones album for me here, and it's getting a bit tedious. Can these paragons of dad rock really be worth that much of my time?... Well, for once, I'd say yes. This may be the version of the Stones I like best, with a sound closer to The Beatles and the original British Invasion rather than the American blues-rock they later tried to emulate. It's also simpler and more to the point, whereas their later albums sometimes feel bloated. There are some pleasant songs and a couple of true hits here (I have a soft spot for "Mother's Little Helper" and "Out of Time"), but also a vague feeling of repetitiveness and a lack of depth that ultimately left me only half-satisfied. Kind of all right, but not something I'd listen to very often. Let's say a strong 3*. 6/10
Interesting proto-Stones album, lots of different sounds from the early 60s/50s, hadn't really hit their stride yet but there are a few really good songs on here
3 stars only because of Paint It Black, one of the best songs ever
The misogyny hasn't aged well.
In theory this is my favourite period for the Stones with them writing their early tunes and Brian Jones mostly engaged and innovative, but it is still only half a decent album to me and the lyrics are so odious. But that marimba part on Under My Thumb.
Not my favourite Stones record. Paint it black is an electric kick-off, but it's pretty mediocre from there. I don't think this album needed an 11 minute closing track either.
I listened to the US version. Pretty cool stuff. Paint It Black rips...the rest, you can see where they're headed but they're just not there yet. Just give me the Mick Taylor era, really. If I'm going to listen to the Stones, that's what I want to hear. I guess the historical significance here is that this is the first album where there are no covers and they wrote all the stuff themselves. Awesome. But I'd rather listen to Goat's Head Soup (which isn't on the generator). So that's what I'm gonna do now.
Glimpses of what I love about the Stones, but I think a lot of their other albums make a lot more sense on a list like this.
2 significant Rolling Stones songs, but the Rolling Stones aren't really an album kind of band. They're more of a singles kind of band to me. So I love the big songs but overall the album is just alright to me.
Favourite Songs: Mother's Little Helper Going Home
Opening with Paint It Black is certainly a bold statement - it's an absolute banger of a track too. As seems to often be the case with the 'Stones by my estimation, it's an album that's one-third awesome rock staples and two-thirds pointless filler. You have tracks like Under My Thumb or Paint It Black that capture you instantly and then pretty forgettable songs like... I dunno, I forgot them already. Fav tracks: Paint It Black, Under My Thumb
Yeah, this score is carried by Paint It, Black tbh
Paint it Black is only on US version
How do you make a song as good as Paint It Black, and then lump it with a collection of completely forgettable songs?
Listened to the UK version so I didn't even get to hear Paint It Black....fine music but lyrics aged like milk
Drugi najbolji Stones album dosad, zanima me hoće li kasnije biti još konkurencije.
A very down the middle album
7/10
Remarkable mainly for the first songwriting attempts of the Glimmer Twins. You can hear what they were reaching for but sounds quite naive in the pop vein of the time. Great to hear Brian Jones’ musical accompaniments playing everything bar the kitchen sink. 3
Fine, bland considering what the stones did at their peak.
I really haven't listened to anything by the Stones that hasn't been played on the radio. This was pretty good. Obviously I already knew the big hits on this one, and the rest were enjoyable.
This is not the Stones era I like. Meh.
classique, fondateur … 3-/5
2,9 Highlights: Mother's Little Helper, Out Of Time
It’s the Rolling Stones…. So giving it a 3/5, not my cup of tea but still a good listen.
meh. old.
Has a pretty good selection of songs and I thought it was pretty enjoyable. 7/10
Own it, but haven't really listened before. Some great songs on here, some dreck too. Going home is such a downer, kills the album. Picks up on the 2nd side. Does not need to be 50 mins, could have cut 15-20 mins. 3 Heard before? Yes Owned: Yes, 94/353 (26%) Will I get: Already have
Not one of their bests but a solid 3 stars
In the Beatles vs the Stones debate, I’m firmly in the Beatles camp, but I do have admiration for the stones, particularly their longevity. The songs here aren’t as familiar to me, but I appreciate the sound. I have wondered in the past how the stones would have sounded if they had a great producer in the studio like the Beatles did. Because I feel like they have good ideas but don’t develop and flesh them out as well as George Martin did with the Beatles. Which is kind of how I feel about this album — good ideas not entirely realized. I am also puzzled to see Paint it Black as part of others’ reviews… that song was not on the album on Apple Music…
This is my first Stones album and I was looking forward to my first exposure to one of the most famous, revered, and influential bands of all time. There aren’t that many times anyone gets to experience that. Unfortunately, I was hardly moved as a whole by this record. I’m assuming there’s better to come with The Stones, as this was the first albun made up of all their own material. Maybe there is something I’m not getting but I thought that, while innovative for the time, certainly, I didn’t fall in love with the tracks here much more than what we’ve heard in the late 60’s. They are well-performed and have some catchy and high-energy moments, but the inconsistency is an issue and nothing blew me away. On top of this, there is some serious misogyny going on and while it’s the 60’s, it certainly doesn’t make me want to listen to it now any more. I might be being a little generous in the end, but there are plenty of solid songs that sound alright for the mid 60’s and some lyrics that aren’t hard to listen to are actually good and interesting. Not exactly taken with this project though. I’m curious what, if any, Stones album will capture me and show me why they’re so loved. 1 listen Favorite Tracks: Mother’s Little Helper
60s music that isn't terrible
Two great tunes on this album but some of the others just felt... lifeless?
Sorry!
One of the best albums by the Stones in the 60s---although unlike so many people, I love Satanic Majesties Request. How they were able to record "Goin' Home" at 11 minutes---broke barriers even though I find it boring. "Lady Jane," "Mother's Little Helper," "Under My Thumb" are the standouts for me.
Would love to listen to this with the windows down, tracing the Welsh coast in my dinghy, cigarette in mouth and speakers turned to the max. I should probably learn how to drive
MIDDD and besides the first song, don’t really appreciate the couple songs that have outdated views on women and they were boring too so
So the American version has Paint It Black, the first really great Rolling Stones song. The UK version opens with Mother's Little Helper, which is an interesting track, but not as effective as Paint It Black. The rest is just kinda messy. Lady Jane feels like a mediocre costume drama. Under My Thumb is musically great Stones, but lyrically dreadful Stones. The rest of it wanders stylistically and indulgently, and it's just... not great, sometimes boring. It's historically interesting as a prologue to the great albums that started 1968, but it's not an album I would tell anyone they really should listen to. 2.5/3, rounding up for the sake of Paint it Black as if it's the American version.
I don’t get the hate people are heaping on the Rolling Stones for this album. It is a product of its time, dated as that may be. This music is 60 years old- older than most of the people even reviewing it, and the philosophy of applying whatever moral standards you have from today to music and art of the far flung past is an extremely flawed idea that is just going to lock you out of being able to enjoy things. This is virtue signaling at its finest, and projecting your moral superiority over music old enough to get a senior citizen discount makes you look like a moron. Nobody is going to fuck you because you think Mick Jagger is a tool for singing about stupid girls. If I were to look into the personal lives of every artist I ever listed to, and added or removed their music from my library based on their moral fiber, I would probably not listen to very much music at all. Assessing your enjoyment of music through a lens of “was this person a good person?” is a fool’s errand and serves only to drive you insane. That said, the music is really good. It has the eternal hits Paint It Black and Under My Thumb on it, which instantly catapulted it to classic status, even back in 1966, but there’s a wide variety of music on here that honestly, the Stones didn’t really go back to much after this album. This one is important because it’s the first time the Stones did an album entirely of their own compositions. Their first 3 albums were mostly just blues covers, which was a thing bands did at that time- lots and lots of covers. This is the demarcation point where the Stones became themselves and ascended the other run of the mill, milquetoast, blues-rock Beatles influenced bands of the era. The Beatles had set the pattern with the matching outfits and mod/bowl haircuts, and everyone else was following. It was still going to take a few albums/years for them to come out from under the long shadow cast by John, Paul, George, and Ringo, but we’ll probably get there on another album. Lady Jane is a really interesting one- which is like a medieval twangy, greensleeves esque ballad with a very knightly/war of the roses theme lyrically. Doncha Bother Me is a jangly, bouncy tune that sounds more akin to what they’d be doing later, and the rest of it is a mix of Beatles sounds, and other 60s era pop music. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
I could take it or leave it…
I listened to both UK/US versions, and honestly the US one was better, trimmed some fat. Under My Thumb is on both tho so net negative either way. Overall it wasn't bad, but a good amount was just eh. The standouts were good tho, I will admit that. Highlights-Mother's Little Helper(UK), Paint it Black(USA), Stupid Girl(guilty pleasure), Lady Jane, Doncha Bother Me, Think, Goin' Home.
I don't really get the Stones. They're fine, but nothing to get excited about.
I know and love the later Stones albums after this one, but I’ll be honest and say I’ve never listened to this. I knew the singles obviously, but the rest was new to me. It was a bit disappointing. Quite repetitive and the songs just aren’t all that strong. Add in the frankly terribly misogynistic and dated lyrics and it makes for a pretty average experience. Released between Rubber Soul and Revolver, quite how anyone at this point thought they were at the level of the Liverpudlian lads is beyond me.
I love Paint it Black, maybe my fav Stones song, but otherwise meh.
These are good smokey, smarmy Stones songs. But goddamn are they misogynistic. I learned Under My Thumb way back when I was heartbroken, and because I was young and foolish, I probably vibed with the notion of blaming other people for being upset. But I can’t imagine covering it today without making some changes.
A lot of these classic rock records can be hit and miss. not a lot of substance or similarity blending these tracks together. the highs are high and the lows are zzz..
Good.
5: I will happily play this album anytime 4: I may occasionally play this album of my own free will 3: I will happily listen to this if someone plays it in the background 2: I will tolerate this if it is playing in the background 1: I will leave the room if someone plays this in the background Listened to both the U.S. and British versions of this. Very front loaded. First 4 tracks are very strong. Back half feels like a pale imitation of their influences.
It's strange — I have a difficult time with many Stones albums. A couple (Exile, for certain) are brilliant from start to finish, but most of the rest have timeless songs parked next to ones I'm content to never hear again. When everything clicks, it's the epitome of rock and roll. When it doesn't, it can be dismissible, even distasteful. Funny, there's some sort of magic that happens in a brilliant song, and it's not easy to qualify. Anyway, half of these have it.
At first, I was reviewing the American release, but then I realized that they, like the Beatles, had a different version for the UK. There are definitely a few gems on here. Out of Time, Mother's Little Helper, Think... But there are quite a number of mid- to just plain bad songs (Lady Jane), plus a whole heap of misogyny. The UK version is definitely better than the US one, though that one has Paint it Black.
Yeah, I’m a Rolling Stones and Beatles fanboy (yes, that’s possible); this is a solid album, though I find *Sticky Fingers* quite a bit better. I don’t get the hate for the Stones at all—come on, Mick and Keith are the coolest people on earth.
Very catchy, to a surprising degree
Hab es tbf nicht fertig gehört
11 songs Paint It, Black is a 5/5 song, that's for sure, but other than that, I found the album to be pretty mediocre. Also worth mentioning that I listened to the US version, which I think is superior, as the UK version didn't have Paint It, Black and was a bit more bloated.
The first song was a nostalgic punch in the face but other than that it is, fine.
Top : Out of Time (Paint It Black sur la version US) Flop : Stupid Girl
Kind of a tough album, because it's hard to know if I'm rating the Rolling Stones compared to others or compared to far superior efforts that I know will follow this 1966 album, where they finally seemed confident enough in their own songwriting to let loose. "Paint It Black" and "Under My Thumb" are the clear standouts, and in the "competition" they were indirectly having with the Beatles at the time, those are the only two tracks that might have had a chance to make it on either Rubber Soul or Revolver, which is how far the Beatles had come by then. Still, this is really the Stones' first effort to focus on the album level (rather than the singles' successes they had already experienced). So points for that, I guess?
Still early Stones, only a couple of years away from their creative peak. You can start to hear the band they will become.
Boy, Mick Jagger really didn't seem to like women. Despite this, it's still a good album. 3.4/5
3/5
Not my favourite of the Stones period. Clearly still trying to find their blues / rock roots.
I play a little game while listening to these albums: I wonder what score this album has? I've been wholly wrong a few times but bang on for this album by the stones (3.4). Two very good songs that we all know. The rest not so much and I have been taking points off for random too long tracks of what sounds like extended free improvisation "noodling". So point off for the 11:13 of going home. I would really like to give it 3 1/2, so right on the average but obviously can't. Ok 1/2 a point for a song about prescription drug abuse (Mother's little helper). Sorry doesn't get it over the line.
Paint it black was good
Longer than I wanted
It's alright. Nothing that I'd consider a stand out.
There are some bangers in this one but I didn’t give it enough listens to really flesh out my review. Probably a mid/high 3.
this was cool. comments on this are mad charged. im not sure i listened to the lyrics very carefully. im not sure whats happening most times with regards to most things
immediately went to the edit page after looking at the lyrics of stupid girl and undr my thumb whyyyy do i never pay attention to lyrics.....downgraded from 4 to 3 but i still think that sonically this is the best rolling stones album and everything should sound like paint it black forever
it's ok, pretty neutral on stones Will I listen to again: 11%
Favorite song: Paint it, Black (of course, there's a reason that song has withstood the test of time and become a classic). Surprise favorite song: I am Waiting. Song I struggled to make it through: the final song, Going Home. 11 minutes and 13 seconds of absolute nonsense in the worst, most self-indulgent, nonsensical way. Overall I give this album 3 stars, there are a couple of redeeming classics / good songs, but an equal or greater number of what fell on my ears as duds.
The Brian Jones and Beatles fingerprints all over this thing are really great. I really really like the instrumentation and production. Sounds like that side had yet to be refined, and was a little derivative, but really strong. I'm usually not too sensitive to lyrics, but the misogyny on this one really is a vibe kill.
Pretty solid old classic rock that doesn't stray too far from the formula. a Couple breakout songs that I had heard before but you can mostly guess what you're in for early on in the album. I think the Vocals are the major identifying factor that give it its edge here and in the future.
(Review for UK Version) A solid album and seminal for 1966, released months before The Beach Boys "Pet Sounds" and The Beatles "Revolver". The Rolling Stones have reached the apex of their early style with more original material than earlier releases. They've already written "Satisfaction", "Play With Fire", "As Tears Go By", "Get Off of My Cloud", so they'd have already solidified themselves in rock history by this album. While this has some big songs for them--"Mother's Little Helper", "Under My Thumb", "Out of Time", "Paint It Black" for the US release--they are still a few years away from hitting their pinnacle. That's the biggest mark against this album. Although it's quite good, it just pales in comparison with basically everything that comes after it: over a decade of great albums. 3.5 / 5, rounded down. This is a pretty big stepping stone for them. Of all the bands that started in the 60's, The Rolling Stones discography is maybe most emblematic of the changes in the world and musical landscape. In just 3 years after this album, the 60's would die in a cloud of confusion and darkness, with The Rolling Stones performing at Altamont Free Concert. With Aftermath, the darkness is looming, but it's hiding in the peripherals. The Free Love movement is dwindling, and leaving behind some scars. And yet, as a whole, Aftermath feels less essential for me personally.
Classic
Rating: 3/5 Playlist track: Under My Thumb (disappointing rapey lyrics though) Date listened: 16-17/06/26 Listen when: - Definitely grows on me the more I listen so this rating could 100% go up but right now it stays where it is.
A few really good tracks, but as an album, it has too much filler to stand out. Faves: Mother's Little Helper, Lady Jane, Under My Thumb
Bangers and some weaker songs
I listened to both the UK and US versions of the album. Both start off with different hits (Mother's Little Helper and Paint it Black, respectively) that are not included on the other version. Those are the best two songs overall, so it's strange they both weren't included on both. Anyway, I was excited after the UK version started, but it quickly devolved into a whole lot of disrespect for women, which was a real turnoff. Musically, I think it's pretty great. Lyrically, it sucks.
3/5 Favorite Song: Think
https://500songs.com/podcast/song-176-sympathy-for-the-devil-by-the-rolling-stones-part-one-a-man-of-wealth-and-taste/
I’ve never been the biggest Rolling Stones fan. This album started of pretty strong, I really enjoyed the first four songs, but from “Goin’ Home” and onward this album really did drag, and was a bit boring.
7- / 10
Paint it Black and then…a pretty okay blues record. Eh.
Nemám ich až tak rád. Som viac beatlesovský ... Ale je to z ich lepších albumov
Paint It, Black is great. The rest is nothing.
nothing that really stands out, just good overall
Mother's Little Helper is a strong opener. I hear the misogyny argument, and I know it was a different time, but Under My Thumb sounds great. It seems like the sort of thing that was written after a bad relationship. Good to know that we have evolved to gangsta rap and Taylor Swift to cover those cringey issues now in a commercially successful way. Lady Jane and Out of Time were OK, and I appreciated blues elements and experimentation throughout the album, but the other tracks weren't memorable.
This is alright. Honestly, it's better than that, I'm just still not that much of a Rolling Stones fan. It's fine.
“paint it, black” and other stuff
I was annoyed to find out after three listens that I had been listening to the U.K. version, which is worse for not having Paint It Black. That is (or would be) one of the two all-timer, rock canon songs on this record, alongside Under My Thumb, which is generally how I feel about Stones records; a couple of eternal tunes, then a bunch of other stuff. That 'other stuff' here has some bright spots - Mother's Little Helper, Out of Time - and also some dull spots, like the dumb, indulgent Going Home. Evens out to about a 3!
6/10
Decent but nothing super outstandingly good
It’s a pretty solid album, not sure why it’s compared to rubber soul, though. Enjoyable, some pretty solid tracks, but I don’t know if he reaches that level. Three stars.
Paint it black and under my thumb were alright
The temptation is to give them high marks because they’re the Rolling Stones. The thing is, while the good songs are really good, there’s a lot of filler here.
Some I liked more than I should. Some showed the talent on display, some obviously missed by miles. It seems I write the same every time I review their albums.
Paint it Black and Under My Thumb (despite its lyrics) are fantastic songs musically. The rest of the album was disappointing. I’ve never understood how this band was compared to The Beatles.
"Look at that stupid girl" I loved so much and so glad I've discovered it LOL. Some of the songs like Going Home I couldn't stand it was so boring.
A classic.
Awww baby stones
bad sequencing and a little bloated tracklist make what should be a great album feel like a little bit of a slog near the end which is unfortunate cause i dont think any of the tracks are Outright Bad
Mostly slow, some good tunes
This is just what I think of when I think of oldie rock. Nothing more or less, nothing better or worse.
I've never heard this album, but yet it feels so familiar. Kudos somehow, Rolling Stones.
Turns out I'm not the biggest Stones fan. Don't get me wrong, the album is good, and a few songs stand out. It's just not that special to me. I think it's an album where I needed to hear it a lot closer to when it was release to fully appreciate it. Nothing on the record blew me away. And about 4-5 songs in I realized that 90% of Mick's lyrics are just repeating the same one to two lines for the entire song. Maybe their other albums will be better.
6.5 - fine, stones don’t do much for me
Kinda average
Mid table Stones
here we can see the Rolling Stones becoming a rock band in the contemporary sense of the word: a band that writes and performs all-original material. previous LPs were partially (or even mostly) comprised of cover versions that showed their love and respect for American folk and blues; but on Aftermath, the Stones start to really put their foot in the ring as contributors to that lineage. as a songwriting duo, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards clearly had a lot of room to grow from here, but standouts like "Mother's Little Helper", "Under My Thumb" and "Out of Time" stand up just as strongly as do the songs from their more legendary albums to follow. Brian Jones is a much bigger factor in this era of the band, with his sitar parts in particular giving a lot of flavor to the musical formula they were working with. this is most notable on "Paint It Black", one of their earliest hits, which landed on the American edition of Aftermath, but not the UK one, so it's not factoring into my review here. that being said, there's still plenty of sitar from Jones, along with marimba, koto and dulcimer. the 52-minute duration of the UK pressing strikes me as ambitious, but not exactly desirable. "Goin' Home" is an 11-minute jam that's one of the earliest examples of such a track on a studio rock album, but not necessarily one of the most notable. the deeper cuts also start to feel pretty repetitive after a while. keep the tracks you like and throw 'em in a playlist or something. light 7/10.
Good album.
Thanks to the game "Guitar Hero III" the song "Paint It, Black" is engraved in my heart :) Sounded to me a kind of deconstruction of country music with rock&roll mixed in.
I enjoyed this album I just thought it felt soooo long. I was like where is the end of it. Some great tracks I can't fault a lot of it but it just feels so drawn out.
Feeling quite conflicted on this one as there as re hip hop records on this I've marked down for their unpleasant misogyny but musically I really like Under My Thumb which is one of several toxic male manipulator anthems from Jagger and co. The US version of this has Paint It Black on it, which is one of the best songs of the decade but there's also quite a few filler tracks on here too, so I'm going to prevaricate and award 3 stars rather than face the bigger question of whether pop music was sexist from it's inception.
Not my #1 Rolling Stones album - some of the songs are repetitive or have annoying lyrics - but includes hits Paint it Black (one of my absolute favs by them) and Under My Thumb.
Surprisingly good album! Rolling Stones is one of the most overrated bands ever. IMO, they’re more of a singles band than an album band, but this album is actually okay. It starts out really strong before the 11 minute drag starts, and brings along the next 3 poor tracks. Out of time is awesome and the album ends in an okay manner. 6/10
Note: I listened to the US edition of this album because that's what was on YouTube Music, though I think the recommendation was for the US edition, which has a pretty different track listing. I know that the Stones are a big deal, and this album is important because it's the first of their albums without any cover songs on it. It's a shame that I didn't like it anywhere near as much as I wanted to. The only song that I'd definitely listen to again is "Paint It Black." A lot of the other songs have very strong instrumentation and would sound great if it wasn't for the horrifying levels of misogyny in the lyrics, even by Rolling Stones standards. And there's no world in which the Stones work as a jam band, so my attitude towards the 11-minute album closer, "Goin' Home," was "Just end already!"
I don't think I've ever listened to Aftermath in full before and there are definite peaks and troughs. It's got that sound of a band in transition - there's the outright pop direction of songs like Mother's Little Helper, Under My Thumb, and Out of Time, then there are the blues tracks like Going Home (which was a slog), High and Dry, etc. The two styles don't sit comfortably alongside one another here to my mind, but they merged these influences almost seamlessly on their future records. An awkward listen all in all. Fun as their earlier years were, I think they had to get their next album (Between the Buttons) and their clumsy psychedelic effort (Their Satanic Majesties) out of the way before they could really get going in earnest. Personally, I don't think you need to listen to anything before Beggar's Banquet. From then on, they were untouchable.
RATING: 7.5/10 HIGHLIGHT: Mother’s Little Helper LOWLIGHT: Doncha Bother Me
Liked the front half of the album but got a bit repetitive by the end.
Sorry lads but I'm not a Stones guy. This is fine.
Fun but not mind blowing. Three
Some songs were great, others not so much. Some lyrics need rethinking. Good Lord.
There are six The Rolling Stones albums on this list, I feel like this one could have been cut. Perfectly fine, but to my ear ordinary, rock and roll.
While I enjoy their hits, the rest of their music doesn't roll for me. ★★★
If the Wikipedia page is correct, I have now listened to everything The Rolling Stones has to offer in this generator after completing 59 percent of this journey. I'm an original album purist, so I only listened to the United Kingdom version, and that may be the difference maker here. Again, I wasn't very impressed. A few key songs helped carry this album to some enjoyability. In this generator, my favorite album by The Rolling Stones is "Let It Bleed". Overall, I say the band is influential, obviously has tremendous longevity, but is overrated as well. Favorite Track: "Lady Jane".
It feels like blasphemy to say, but I wasn't that fond of this album. It was alright to have on in the background I suppose, but with a group like The Rolling Stones I thought it'd knock it out of the park. Was just fine for me, but no takeaways and I wouldn't listen again.
Really shows the blues roots of this band.
Already knew Paint it Black, rest never heard but familiar. I get the hype but had to be there
Nice
Apparently their first album containing tracks they wrote themselves, it’s pretty much the blueprint for their sound. Paint It Black does a lot of heavy lifting for this album and it’s a shame that it’s the opener as it’s a hard act to follow.
This album does nothing to dispell my feeling that the Stones were a singles act until the late 60's. Any albums they have on this list that predate 'Beggar's Banquet' shouldn't be on here - just like this one. The best thing to take away from this is that before The Beatles releases the years ahead Revolver, Lennon joked they should call it 'Before Geography'. Best Tracks: Mother's Little Helper; Under My Thumb; Out of Time
I thought this was a solid Stones album! It didn’t blow me away but I thought it was enjoyable to listen to and I would give it another listen in the future if I was in the mood for some blues/psychedelic rock!
Hay grandes canciones que me he guardado: «Paint It, Black», «Doncha Bother Me» y «It's Not Easy». Especialmente interesante «Under My Thumb».
Paint it black and Under My Thumb rip. When this album rocks - it rocks. When it sucks - it sucks. Too bad it sucks more than it rocks. A lot of this was just Temu Beatles. Overall not the worst stones album. Relatively inoffensive if not bland.
I think i really only enjoy popular Stones songs, the album was okay but a bit boring for me in some parts. I appreciate it but it's not all for me.
That's it? It was fine, but also not super special?
It's hard to rate, cause there's some good stuff. It's just not my style.
No me disgustó, 3/5
Solid, but not up to the levels of Exile, Sticky Fingers, or Let it Bleed. You can kind of see the band starting to move into that territory, but they haven't arrived quite yet. 7/10
Not my favorite from them
Good album
Great vocals and instrumentals, style is very of its time and good (night bar music), just not enough to be much more memorable than this listen. Paint it black will always be a classic, but I found some more liked songs.
An older album. Again I seem to prefer modern producing rather thay the spacious recording of older times. This album was an easy listen. Didn't blow me away, didn't aggravate me either. (3/5)
Never a big Stones fan, they always seemed petulant
Stones albums lose the raw energy that came across when they performed to the point where their albums are just meh
Listens: 4 Standout Tracks: Paint It Black, Under My Thumb I feel like the Rolling Stones have some sort of split-brain going on. On one side of the brain, you have absolute bangers like Sympathy For The Devil, Gimme Shelter, Paint It Black, Under My Thumb. And on the other, you've got really weird (but not necessarily bad) shit like Lady Jane. Maybe my beef is just with that track, which feels otherwise out of place compared to the rest of the album. Its a baroque tune in a sea of rock and roll and blues. Why is it on the album? Paint it Black and Under My Thumb are 5's and the rest of the album is a 3 (Going Home is a 4).
Favorite: Lady Jane
One or two good songs , the rest just about average.
There are two versions of this album - the UK version and the U.S. version - that have slightly different track lists. I listened to the U.S. version mainly because the first song on the album is "Paint It Black" and the song isn't on the UK version at all. "Paint It Black" is my favorite Rolling Stones song and one of my all-time favorite songs, period. As far as the whole album, I definitely enjoyed listening to it. I think the Stones did some things on this album that other bands weren't really doing at the time - experimenting with different instruments, etc. It's not always a popular opinion, but I've always been a bigger Stones fan than a Beatles fan (probably because my Dad is as well). Setting aside the fact that some of the lyrics on some of the songs are pretty cringey and the fact that the last song - "Goin' Home" - just goes on for way too long and never really goes anywhere, this is a solid album.
Cool, different, a little too country/blusey for my liking. Still decent. 3.5/5
bakeliten halgattam, úgyhogy eleve egy másfajta, sokkal nyugodtabb, lassabb, odafigyelősebb halgatási élmény volt. tetszett, de kicsit jobban szeretem a későbbi rockot - ezért a 3 csillag
… Oh… … Well, this is my third time writing this for some reason. Anyway this is the Stones’ first album that a lot of people really pay attention to, due to the fact that it has “Mommy’s Little Helper” on it (which I love, as does my dad) as well as featuring the classic “Paint It, Black” on the American version, which also removes the tedious 11-minute “Going Home.” This album’s also interesting because it has some sort of concept, I suppose in the same way that an album like Aesop Rock’s “Labor Days” has a concept, though that’s one of the best albums of all time and this… I’m getting ahead of myself. It’s basically just endless pessimism as a concept I’m pretty sure. And that’s all well and good, but that basically makes them the evil version of early Beatles, because they take just as much from much better and more capable Black artists as the Beatles used to, but it’s so much less competent (which in most cases is saying something because some of that shit wasn’t good at all). As I mentioned, “Mother’s Little Helper” is superb, but it falls off fast from there, and there’s not much else interesting on the album. It’s just a slog of Mick Jagger trying to be interesting and instead being boring if not grating. I don’t know. It gets to you after a while, how nothing this album is without its highs. Still not bad though. 6.9/10
Couple of great songs…the rest a disappointment.
Middle of the road. One hit song. Not so hyped about the Rolling Stones.
It was alright, I dont think im much of a Rolling Stones fan It seems.
I generally like the 'Stones, but this isn't a strong album. This is a few classic singles accompanied by a bunch of filler. What was with that 11-minute Going Home song? There were about 7 unnecessary minutes in there. Liked Songs Added: Mother's Little Helper Lady Jane Under My Thumb Out Of Time What To Do
Paint it Black is in my top 3 Stones songs and that gives this album some extra points for me as some of the other songs like Stupid Girl don't stand up to the test of time. I do appreciate that this is an album where the Stones found their sound and that's cool.
Rolling Stones albums are just so shitty, One or two good songs with a lot of filler.
'sfine. Honestly this album really feels like the attention was on the first four songs, and the rest are more of the plodding 'okay' blues numbers that The Rolling Stones do. I respect The Rolling Stones a lot but I'm not a superfan. Decent enough album though.
Some great hits and some ones I haven’t heard before. I enjoyed this album.
Feels like I should enjoy this more, but besides Paint It Black it’s a bit forgettable
Solid one from the Rolling Stones,
3 starw
Mucho rock, actitud y ADN Stones. Under my Thumb.
3.0 - Ok
(67/100)
Album #121 The Rolling Stones: Aftermath I will admit that I’ve never actually delved into The Rolling Stones' discography. They have a handful of amazing songs that I have long enjoyed, including the first track from this album, “Paint it Black”; their sound has never gripped me enough to seek out full albums. Of the British Takeover bands, I instead listen to The Beatles, The Kinks, and The Who, before even considering The Stones. I know that Aftermath isn’t considered to be them in their prime, so I am not going to judge the band solely on this album. I can’t say that this impressed me too much. There are some great songs, but overall, everything sort of has that same bluesy atmosphere, which isn’t my favourite sound. There seemed to be a trend in the late 60s of ending your album with a 10-plus-minute song, and this worked for some, like the Velvet Underground with Sister Ray, and The Doors with The End. But Going Home by The Rolling Stones just isn’t able to captivate me as much as the previously mentioned songs, so it ends up feeling like a drag. I don’t think this album is bad by any means; however, I do find it a little dull. Best Songs: Paint It Black, Lady Jane, I Am Waiting Worst Song: Going Home Score out of 10: 6.5
I get why this album is on the list. However, of all the Stones' albums, I don't think that this one should have been on the list. I listened to the U.S. version of this album rather than the U.K. because I love "Paint It Black" and can't stand "Mother's Little Helper". I love that, even on this album, they didn't stick to formulaic songwriting. The difference between "Paing It Black", "Under My Thumb", and "I Am Waiting" are stark in all good ways.
Kinda underwhelmed I expected more but overall solid
Paint it, Black muy buen tema.
No me encantó. Out of time es la única que volvería a escuchar
Musically, I enjoy this iteration of the Stones with its well-crafted pop gems and different genre leanings. The baroque stylings of “Lady Jane” are particularly cool. The misogyny is over the top, though.
Not really all that into the Stones but some of the songs were enjoyable
It’s fine, there’s a few classic songs and a lot of just okay filler. Not every Rolling Stones album needs to be on this list!
Why was "Paint it Black" not on the UK version? Accidently played that one and got "Mother's little Helper" as the opening track. 2 Stars for the UK version and 3 for the US only cause "Paint it Black" is a banger. Rest of it's "meh"
3 stars and only because I love Paint It Black so much. When they're good, they're really good, when they're bad they're awful!
Solid 3. There are better Rolling Stones albums out there.
A couple cool songs. Got this album right after The Who and it's just too much British loosey goosey for me in a row. We CAN play really well, but how do we make it sound like we never rehearsed this before
"Under My Thumb" musica d ascensor, ahr.
Yeah, this is a hard one to rate. The music is pretty good, but the misogyny is rampant. Half the songs are really enjoyable, half the songs are boring and flat. There's two versions of the album, One of which has the absolute classic "Paint It Black" on what is its only album release as far as I can tell, and the other is the real version. Whether I look at it as a great album full of bad lyrics or a bad album with a few real crackers, either way I feel like it averages out on the whole. A 3/5 it is.
My personal replays: Mother's Little Helper
Bit old school but good
Absolutely fine. Nothing outstanding
How did they make paint it black and going home and shove all the boring stuff between it Paint it black is like they were touched my aliens and said, this is what you need to do.
Transitional album for the Stones, didn’t realize they hated women so much.
3.5/5
i think my first introduction to The Rolling Stones was "Paint it Black", which, if I'm remembering this right, was the menu music for the game Twisted Metal Black. or at least it was somewhere in the game. i remember that it was my favorite part of the game, which otherwise bored (or scared) me
Accidentally listened to the UK version, which didn’t have Paint It Black, so I gotta give this a placeholder 3 star review and revisit
A little dated 60s blues rock from the stones but it has its moment. Paint It Black will always be a classic.
General thoughts: I had a hard time deciding between the US or UK versions; the setlists looked wildly different, and opening with "Paint it Black" along a shorter run seemed like an advantage for the US, but I ended up picking the UK because it's their country of origin. Inevitably, I have to compare it to what the Beatles were producing during those years, which would be Rubber Soul. If this were really a race, Aftermath feels some years behind. The opening track sets a gist of a psychedelic and more mature undertone. Actually, the start is strong but falls trepidly after 'Under My Thumb'. The rest of the album is basic Rock'n'Roll and Blues tunes, nothing that makes you think 'Hey, this is something only The Rolling Stones are capable of doing'. No, it's something pretty generic. The album sounds really unpolished and badly produced; there's this constant echo, like it was recorded in a big hall. The drums are lame as hell. The guitar in comparison was really good and unique, it's like it's there doing it's own thing, shining in parallel with the vocals but at the same time not stealing the spotlight. After getting familiar with the UK version I checked the US version and it's basically a rearrangement + "Paint it Black". Side A is near perfect and then side B is average but tanking again thanks to "Goin' Home". Overall, the final rating is similar. Outstanding song(s): Under My Thumb, Lady Jane, Mother's Little Helper Weakest song(s): Goin' Home - Yeah, let's make the outro of the most generic song in the album 11 minutes long, 1/5 of the duration! Cover: This is clearly 'With The Beatles'. Real rating: 3.21

Oh, the trend of the times when an artist was simply a singing head, performing what others had written before them. On this album, The Rolling Stones for the first time abandoned this vicious practice — all the songs here are written by the Jagger / Richards duo, with only the influence of old blues standards remaining, heavily diluted by sitar, marimba, and harmonica, unusual for the genre. Did the band succeed? At first, it certainly did; the entire first half of the album, ending with the epochal jam "Going Home," is excellent. The second half stumbled and then completely lost its way; these aren't exactly bad songs, they're just boring, especially considering the band's current stature. After listening to the album, the initial confusion over the fact that four tracks were cut from the American version dissipates; but they added Paint It Black - that's what I call an equal exchange.
Like other Stones stuff, there are a couple of great songs on here, and the rest is pretty filler-y.
A relic. I bet it was pretty great when it came out. I enjoyed it, but I can't see myself listening to it again
Entry #4 from the Stones. They still have some country flavor on a few tracks, as with their other records. Overall this album is not as good as the earlier Stones albums, although it does have a few hits.
Sigh, more Rolling Stones. Pretty good album cover. Pretty stupid(=sexist) lyrics, but these songs are catchier than some of their others. More mellow and poppy. Not a terrible album, but not really a standout either. (Among albums, that is. A standout among Rolling Stoneses, maybe, since I don't hate it.) Highlights: 'Under My Thumb', 'Take It or Leave It' Lowlight: 'Goin' Home' (Wiki: "The song, while lengthy, is built around a common theme, as opposed to later Stones songs of great length")
I listened to the UK version because it had my favorite Rolling Stones song on it, Mother’s Little Helper, which wasn’t on the US version. The US version had Paint It Black though, which is my second favorite Rolling Stones song. The only other song I knew was Under My Thumb which I like. I wasn’t a fan of the rest of the album.
Pretty good
Light 3,5
Out of time, himno
Reasonable
Another Rolling Stones album. This one has some good songs on it but nothing that totally wins me over. Not the best, not the worst. Solid 2.5 stars.
As a Stones fan this album didn’t do much for me.
This album is the perfect showcase of The Rolling Stones experience. You get to enjoy Mothers Little Helper and Lady Jane, but you also get to suffer through Going Home and High And Dry. Favourite track: Out Of Time
Nice One
All in all a really enjoyable listen. Cool to see how the Stones expanded their influence. But, there was still a lot of white guy blues. This rating is for the UK version, which is what I listened to. That 11 minute track is the middle is rough. But, the US version would probably be a 4, given that it's shorter and has Paint It, Black on it.
Fine, good classic Stones stuff
I find it interesting that I got this "AfterMath" a day after I got The Beatles' Revolver. Both albums came at pivotal times for the groups, and were a change of direction in sound. Revolver is an all-timer. AfterMath is not.
Can’t stand Jagger’s vocals, but musically quite a treat. The last couple of minutes almost sound like proto hi-nrg
:D 2 historicall hits from Rolling Stones in this album
The Rolling Stones seem to create a lot of tracks that sound like the Rolling Stones. They do have a very specific sound. I enjoyed listening to this album, but I find most of their albums and tracks sounding the same and all merging into one another. 2 starts, plus a bonus star for my fav track, 'Mothers little helper'
Paint It Black - 5/5 Stupid Girl - 2.5/5 Lady Jane - 2.5/5 Under My Thumb - 3/5 Doncha Bother Me - 3/5 Think - 3/5 Flight 505 - 2.5/5 High and Dry - 2/5 It's Not Easy - 3/5 I Am Waiting - 3/5 Goin' Home - 3/5 I ultimately decided to listen to the US version of this album just because it had Paint It Black. I had liked Under My Thumb until I actually listened to it and it turned me off. The first track really carries this album as the rest of it. They're a lot more misogynistic than I realized. A 5 for the first track and a meh for the rest averages out to a 3 so I guess that's what I'm going with. Overall: 3/5 Favorites: Paint It Black
Note: Listening to the US release Finally, some original Stones compositions. This is largely where that began, as the Stones experimented with unique instrumentation and leaned on exotic influences (ala the Beatles with "Rubber Soul"). Thus ushering in their "pop rock" period. I guess it'll depend on who you ask, but I tend of prefer this era of the Stones for pretty much the reasons listed above. That being said, can't really ignore the misogyny that creeps in here and the overall quality sort of dips halfway through the record as things start to feel repetitive. I was a little disappointed in all honesty, especially after how things started. Oh well, at least they later gave us Let It Bleed and Sticky Fingers.
Trying to look at this without knowing it’s the Stones to see how it sounds.
One of the more enjoyable Stones albums I think. Paint It Black is a very cool track. Fave Tracks: Paint It Black, Under My Thumb 3.4/5
This early Rolling Stones album is quite a mixed bag. The hits featured here are strong but other tracks seem a bit musically lost. The final track - What To Do - sounds like immitation Beatles. Other tracks have a country and western sound. I'm to score this album on what I'm hearing rather than The Stones and their future sound.
While I can appreciate the impact, appeal, and talent of the Rolling Stones, I find that apart from a few tracks of theirs, their style doesn't do much for me. While I think it’s reductive to compare them with the Beatles, it’s such a pervasive discussion, I thought I’d briefly give my take. Personally, I don’t think there’s any comparison at all. The Beatles were at the forefront of every aspect of the music industry, and I almost see the Rolling Stones as constantly playing catch-up, reliably delivering hits, but not quite landing solidly at each chapter of their journey. In regards to character as well, although I think it’s always best to separate the art from the artist, for many of these 60’s boy bands, and the majority of other bands in the following decades, their image was such a huge part of their success. Once again, there is no comparison. The Beatles were witty, charming, and each had distinct qualities. The Rolling Stones lack that quality, and I’d even go as far as saying some of them are detestable. Especially Bill Wyman, being sexually engaged with a 13-year-old girl when he was in his 40s.
Let it Bleed is the best Stones album. This one has Under My Thumb on it - which is my favourite song of theirs, though. Or does it - there's a US version of the album that I'm convinced I've already listened to. Either way, this is #7 now of Stones albums, and they vary wildly in quality. Aftermath (UK version) doesn't have Paint It Black. It does have lots of twangy guitar, pretty standard but listenable chord progressions, and light, poppy song lyrics. Perhaps a statement of what was to come, but then again, I only know their hits. Listenable, if forgettable.
Sounds very dated and possibly not entirely what I think of from the stones. It was fine, but nothing more. 2.5 is fair and won't be back
Starting an album with "Paint It Black" is wild and really set the bar too high. I've learned since that it was a decision for the US release and now I wish I had done the UK version. Stones have never really been my thing but I have nothing bad to say. Favorite Songs: Paint it Black, I Am Waiting
Fave track was I Am Waiting, the rest was OK. Paint It Black is overplayed and I don't like Under My Thumb.
First Stones I got on the list, it's very safe and enjoyable.
En del bra låtar men lite för mycket 60-tals-vibe
Another pretty decent bluesy entry from The Stones. It was alright, nice to listen to, nothing mind boggling. I listened to the UK version apparently and it didn't have Paint It Black on it, so what the hell? Standouts on this listen were "Mothers Little Helper" "Under My Thumb" and "Doncha Bother Me" Can't give this any higher than a 3. It was fine. Not bad, not great.
Some interesting stuff... but The Rolling Stones are not my cup of tea
mid 3.5 paint it black / mothers little helper, under my thumb e I am waiting são claros destaques, as demais faixas não são ruins mas não chamaram atenção, apenas uma boa sonoridade blues clássica
This one starts off with the all TIme classic 'paint it black'. Though most of the record doesn't come close to this, there's several other highlights in the form of 'Flight 505' and 'going home'. All in all quite enjoyable, but the Stones would go on to release far more exciting award with their next album and beyond.
Several known classic stones songs, Under my Thumb and Mother's Little Helper. Fine Stones filler, but not their most notable work.
Aftermath is definitely a really solid album from The Rolling Stones. This album apparently had two different versions with one being from the UK and the other being from the US (I listened to the latter because that was the first one i could find on Youtube) with the latter having a few songs rearranged or omitted entirely. I still think i would have had the same opinion of this album regardless of which one i listened to though. The production is very fuzzy sounding which i think adds a certain charm to these kinds of album. There were also some interesting ideas in store on this album especially with Paint It Black. This is a rather enjoyable album and a good way to close off my 6 album journey with them. Best Song: Paint It Black Worst Song: Going Home Side Note: Like i have always done with artists with 3 albums or more, album rankings: 1. Sticky Fingers 2. Let It Bleed 3. Aftermath 4. Beggars Banquet 5. The Rolling Stones 6. Exile On Main Street
I think it’s dated-ness makes it difficult for me to enjoy. Paint it Black is one of the best songs ever written though. Also really enjoyed Going Home.
7/10 con solo algunos destellos de genialidad con Under my thumb y Out of time, es el peor disco de los Rolling Stones?
Me thinks this is mediocre at best. Sorry Mick
3,2
⭐️⭐️⭐️
I enjoyed a lot of the classic songs that I knew well. As an album, I think there are bits when it is too repetitive. Overall I enjoyed it, but I think it's a middle of the road album.
3.5 - I did not expect the stylistic difference between songs I know by the Rolling Stones and what I heard on this album.
Paint it Black was a good opener for my walk. Thank you guitar hero. Another song timed perfectly with a hill to get me going. Luck helped this album but it was decent already.
mid-60s Stones, first all-Jagger/Richards songs it's OK, will get better in time
As a 12 year old my favourite tv show was Tour of Duty. Paint it Black was the opening theme & it rocked. I knew nothing about the song until my late teens when I rediscovered Paint it Black. Now nudging 50, battling depression (undiagnosed & diagnosed) for 20 years this song slaps even harder. It’s easily in my top 10 of all time songs. The rest of the songs this album stink. It’s not a good Stones album. I’ll give it a 3 purely on the shoulders of Paint it Black, without it I could easily give it a 1.
I like the marimba on Under My Thumb. Some of the songs are kinda cute.
Solid album…. Fun and shows what they will become.
This is a good Rolling Stones album, definitely showing way more blues and pure rock than the Beatles or Kinks or other pop bands I normally equate them to. Paint It, Black is such an amazing song, the album wins almost for that alone. I think my other favorite song here was I Am Waiting, a surprisingly calm and patient song. The rest of the album is fine, though Stupid Girl and Lady Jane are pretty, well, stupid. Going Home, Under My Thumb, and Think we're good.
Paint It Black and Under My Thumb are classic big hits. The rest of the album is pretty meh. Those two songs don’t even feel like they belong on an album with the other songs.
Though it consists of all original songs, this is a very mediocre album by Rolling Stones standards. It's an ok english blues rock/ rock'n'roll album. It's a 3/5, with only 2 or 3 standout songs, it would've been an immediate 4/5 if it had one of the greatest songs of the 20th century "Paint it Black" included, like the US version of the album. This album has some semblance of what was to come, but they weren't there yet.
Some bangers. Some classics. Some songs that are way too long. But tons of hints of what’s to come. 3 1/2
Another day, another 3 star review from me for the Rolling Stones. Paint it Black is obviously great. Sorry fellas.
I'm not one to take offense easily, but christ alive Under My Thumb is a fucked up song.
Starts very strong. Going home has no business being this long. After that a lot of very samey material. Lot of filler in the second half. Strong first half, bland pedestrian second half.
Yeah Rolling Stones are cool af
Solid rock. Accidentally listened on shuffle. I don't love stupid girl
This is like the Stone’s Hard Days Night in that it’s their first record with all originals. But also the analogy holds in. That they aren’t at their strongest yet. Still good! But between the buttons, let it bleed, satanic majesties are all better imo. I really can’t believe the UK version just left paint it black on the shelf like that though. Fave tracks: going home, out of time, take it or leave it
About what I expected from a Rolling Stones album, which is to say it's fine but not really my thing
A solid early album from one of my favourite bands. More pop focused than their mid career catalogue, not my favourite but pretty decent.
I’ve been in a surprise Beatles rabbithole lately, so it’s fun to check in with ‘The Stones’ to hear what they were up to in ‘66. So which version do we listen to - UK or US? Maybe that depends on your affinity for “Paint It, Black”, which is a very conspicuous difference between the two versions. The UK version is a good Blues/R&B record, but once you know PIB could be on this record, it’s tough to feel like it’s a full-strength record without it (I have a similar complaint about several Beatles records). “Under My Thumb” is strong but it wasn’t gonna move units in America on its own. Also, I’m pretty curious about how “Stupid Girl” managed to be track 2 on both versions, because yikes.
Some classic Stones stuff. Paint it Black off the US version is an all-timer and Out of Time is also really good off the UK version. Under My Thumb is also a classic but there are quite a good amount of misses here and it gets a little boring.
Still early Stones. They hadn't gotten that growl that we expect feom them yet. Still a good album though
Listened to the UK version, didn't realize Paint it Black was on the US release. A couple musical highlights, one song that goes on way to long, and some lyrics that can best be described as questionable. This is not yet the band firing on all cylindars, but they are getting there.
Paint It Black is the only reason this is getting a 3 from me. The rest was at best, just okay, and at worst, just boring
Paint it black 5 Going home 3
Great hits and a few hidden gems but a lot of uninteresting filler as well. Average as far as the Stones go. 7/10 Favorite tracks- “Paint it Black” “Under My Thumb” “I Am Waiting”
Arguably the most in-your-face Stones album I've drawn so far, and also coincidentally(?) the earliest. There are some good, fun basic guitar bops, some shamelessly Beatles-esque songs and one very long, drawn out jammy experimental one. It's good in places but sagged in the second half and didn't really score highly on the consistency stakes for me.
Pleasant, amusing, although some of the lyrics annoyed me
not bad
Ok. Bit dated but no so bad.
Not my favorite but had some pretty good songs.
A tedious Rolling Stones album right off the bat with the krumtastic Kinks kopping Mothers Little Helper and Jagger soon after trying to sound all renaissance minstrel on Lady Jane. The 11 minute formless jam Going Home obviously is a major drag but most of the album is to be honest except for one genius essential song Under My Thumb which is geniusly matched with Brian Jones’ genius marimba. There is an argument as to whether the US or the UK version is better but really they both suck and I would just keep Under My Thumb and Paint It Black on a 1001 songs list and chuck the rest.
2/20/26: I didn't think this was as good as the other album recommended. (Can't remember name) 5/10
For me, the whole album is Paint it Black (what’s with the unnecessary comma?) and maybe a bit of the last song. Paint it Black is so goated lyrically and musically that it justifies the whole record’s existence. But the rest is meh American pastiche to me
Aftermath (UK version) was the Stones breakout album (new sound, no covers) that’s better now than the first time I heard it, around 1971 or 72. Keep in mind that by 71 they had already released Flowers, Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed, and Sticky Fingers (all of which out shine Aftermath.) We had the US version on vinyl, it didn’t get much play other than Paint It Black and Under My Thumb. They had better albums, why play this early one? (3.4*s) We’re gonna have a couple more from The Stones.
I opted to listen to the UK version of Aftermath. It's an OK album overall but after looking at the comparison, perhaps the US got it right by cutting it down a bit. While you would lose one of the original release's best songs in Mother's Little Helper, you would also pick up one of the Stones' best hits in Paint It Black and reduce the run time by about 10 minutes. Aftermath is a pretty accurate amalgamation of The Rolling Stones as a whole for me. The album has a couple pretty good songs and then the rest of it is just OK. None of it is bad, but a lot of it is skippable filler. This is accurate to almost their entire discography for me. Some of their hits are top notch, but so much of the rest of their discography just doesn't move the needle for me. It's mostly fine but also not that great. They are living legends and an indispensable part of rock history, yet while I'm a fan I rarely go to them beyond a couple singles now and then. From 60 years of their career give me their 20 best songs and then call it a day. I know there will be more Rolling Stones on this list and I look forward to the entries. However, outside of Some Girls (which I love) I expect I'll be mostly underwhelmed with their albums. 2.67 stars
Great opener, but the album can't keep up with it. plus, the misogyny can be off putting.
Songs that are stories and random vocal sounds are indicative of the late 60s and early 70s. The Stones prove this with the album, including songs that deal with barbiturates to tackle every day problems.
More experimental, less rock than other stones albums. Enjoyed it, less hits than others. 3.5
Nice it’s ok
As big as the Stones were in the ‘60s, they really hit their zenith at the tail end of the decade and though the ‘70s, as this album illustrates. For all the hints of their brilliance (“Paint It, Black,” “Lady Jane,” “Under My Thumb”) there are several tentative and non-essential blues workouts that suggest they were still putting things together as a musical act. The song "Stupid Girl" is just trash. Still, it’s exciting to listen to a song like “Flight 505” and hear the foundation of their incredible rhythmic boogie foundation being poured.
Do admire sticking an 11 minute song right in the middle of the album. Would give a 3.5 if I could, but rounding this one down.
Good ratio of songs I'd never heard to songs I'm tired of hearing.
First of all, it’s important to note I’m reviewing the definitive UK version as, the US version is drastically different. Even without Paint It Black, side A is clearly very strong Mother’s Little Helper is fantastic as is Under My Thumb, obviously but B side is still to bluesy and unremarkable to me. 7.7/10
Vibes but not that much
3.3 Another Rolling Stones album, another album were the only tracks I like are those couple selected for Forty Licks. I just can't do the faux-Americana, which seems to haunt all of their albums. I've thought for years that when I get older one day the Stones will click. Fast approaching 40, I think thats sadly been and gone. Just not for me.
Didn't feel as catchy as I imagined, but there were some really nice songs there. Was wondering how they'd managed to cover such a range of sound, I appreciated it! 3.5/5 Maybe worth another listen
Has the one vietnam song
Paint it Black is iconic but the rest of the album does not match it’s staying power
Some gems. Definitely if it’s era, and the isms are obvious.
The rolling stones really are just 'fine'. I would have preferred the us version. Shorter and with paint it black.
Highlights: Mother's Little Helper, Under My Thumb, Out Of Time Decent early Stones record, but not thaaaat much more unique compared to the rest of the contemporary teen rock music. I did however pick up on a more southern sound on Doncha Bother Me and a couple other tracks. It points to their more cocky sounding country material from future records like Exile on Main St. There were some pure filler songs like Going Home. When I'm listening to Out Of Time I can only hear the popular Yugoslav song Bejbe, ti nisi tu by Električni orgazam - a later semi-cover (I don't think the lyrics are the same). Overall I found the middle and the end of the record to be pretty meh. Not really all that interesting besides the highlights, so I won't be revisiting the record as a whole.
