Get up and just dance without lyrics
I like the jazz undertones, the songs are very long
Judging based on the music itself, I was mildly entertained and then bored for each song. Ive heard zombie a million times, but the rest of the tracks were also decent. Broadly speaking, fela kutis story is wild and earns my respect.
i’m not sure who this music is for, but it isn’t me. It’s unobjectionable but doesn’t do anything for me. This one felt like one I need more background info on to understand if there’s some cultural significance or novel musical approach here that I’m unaware of. Otherwise just kinda meandering and repetitive without doing anything beautiful or impressive or catchy.
Not my thing. It was like being on hold for an hour.
I tried! I just don’t have the ears for it.
I rarely ever read the wikipedia pages which I do realize I should see more ofc but I do it mostly to try to not he bias with my opinion however reading this one showed me how truly influential this album is and that was very important to see. Although this genre of music is something I really just don’t like all that much, the album being so influential really helps how I feel about it because now I know why it’s on the list.
2,5
For me… meh. Lots of horns and repetitive beats. I bet this would be great live, as it was more of a stream of consciousness.
I am wavering between a 3 and a 2, but enjoyed this less than most of the 3s so far. I like the 70s sound but found that the long tracks became a bit repetitive.
fun in the first minute but too long songs a bit boring after time
Not my jam
This just isn’t my kind of music but I appreciate that it had me bopping along at times. This album I couldn’t ever picture a scenario of willingly selecting it and listening through headphones. I feel I would enjoy it much more in person as a backdrop. Don’t have the knowledge in this genre to score it fairly
I never thought I'd say this, but I liked the live album better!
Trumpet sounds! TRUMPET SOUNDS!
The title track is really good, but the other three don't hit quite the same level. Interesting, but not really my jam in general. A bit too long-winded for me.
A little too jazzy for me but still respectable!
Was background music really. Didn't hate it but won't listen again in a hurry
Unique and interesting but I find the songs way too long
Not really my lane Seemed OK - but I didn't tap my foot or stop to listen at any point
Too much abrasive brass Afro-Beat and not enough music for my taste. Maybe toss in a lyric here and there.
2.5/5
:/
Did not keep my interest
zombie was great the rest was ok.
Listen to the entire album not sure what I was listening too, so
I can appreciate this without actually enjoying it.
I really couldn’t get into this one
Funky! But too much for a whole album. I could only do a song at a time in future.
I didn't hate it, but it was far too long could have got the same message across in half the time if they wanted to.
Jazz not for me 2/5
5/10 Nice vibes, good musicianship, good background mood music But this is basically a world jazz album and leans heavily into the improv/jam style This means that it feels interesting but ultimately rudderless and a bit empty to me Having read the wikipedia after listening, it seems that this is on the list for the political and societal issues surrounding it, rather than for its musical quality Best: Mistake
Afrobeats , nice but doesn't capture
sounds fine but songs are way too long with extremely lengthy instrumental sections, nice background music but personally difficult to pay attention to or enjoy
all respect for his contributions to music history but i am not a jazz fan so a 4 song 53 minute jazz album is not exactly my thing….. love and respect though
Not my music
Hintergrundmusik
Short record with some interesting historical background. However, the songs have nice grooves but the horn solos are not that interesting to me.
#125. No matter how much meandering jazz nonsense you put in front of me, it'll never not be boring. I'm assuming there are actually people out there that thoroughly enjoy this kind of music, but I'm glad I haven't met them. 2/5: wack
Just ain’t my thing, but respect to the man and the people who enjoy his music.
Not my preferred genre, so never heard of this artist before. I didn't hate it, but would not listen again. Nearly an hour long with only 4 songs. I liked the singing part, there just wasn't very much of it. 2/5
I had never heard of this person before. I was pleasantly surprised. Not my usual thing but was better than I thought. Why such a low star then? Still not my favorite.
Not as good as I remember but it's fela
Something I never would have sought out on my own. The second piece was pretty good. Vocals are ridiculous. Two stars
Creative, but limited depth. Repetitive.
have really been into jazz lately and was excited for this, especially as it was my first album with this project but alas, not for me
This album was the least compelling of the jazz albums I have heard so far. The songs all blended together and felt much too long.
Some lovely rhythms and sax parts, pulsating drums but thought I'd like it more
Jazzy probably iconic because of timing and circumstance but doesn’t withstand test of time innit
It was easy to listen to in the background
2/5
Not my favorite. I like the jazz, but the longer song length stretches my patience with the jazz music.
2.3 - Next
not my style, but cool music
mildly bad
Really really repetitive. After twelve minutes of Mr. Follow I couldn't bear the rhythm anymore. Zombie was a little bit better (maybe because there was more singing ?) but the rest was overall very boring.
Close to a 3 but jazzy stuff not my bag
Would listen to again. Super chill afro jazz.
Not my bag
Extended jams, they were alright, jazzy
Vampire is awesome. Rest of the album less so.
Hade samma artist i förrgår. Så jäkla bra är det ju inte.
Very long and repetitive
...Very interesting, album I would say. I understood nothing in it. But the very chaotic and kinda crazy music in the background is throwing me off,..probably wouldn't listen again. But it ain't terrible.
Doesn't go anywhere, akin to background music. Could dance if shitfaced. Not a good album. Every song sounded the same
Not my cup of tea
Me - only four songs? Nice. Also me, half hour later - how am I only on song two?! Not a bad sound. There could be a time and place for this.
Lite jazz.
Grei proggemusikk
It as an okay Album. Only the beggining track caught my attention for awhile
not for me
Interesting. Pretty relaxing. Not for me, I dislike the singing. Also very long.
The first non-Eurocentric album on this listen through. Really enjoying the vibes. I wish there was a little more evolution in the songs, but I'm pretty sure that's a style thing, a back beat with lots of solos throughout. That does mean it makes excellent background music for me.
It’s not my kind of music. I really didn’t enjoy it.
The songs were quite long and repetitive, but the parts with vocals were really nice - 4.9/10
Good as background music, not much else.
I gotta give it some respect, but I didn't think much listening to it. It was very short, which was nice. I liked this more than his other album I got on here. My favorite song was Zombie.
Wasn't feeling it. Loved few of his songs a while ago, must go listen to them then return to this record.
Not my style of music. I don't doubt his talent or influence - I just don't like it.
OK. Nice African Jazz.
Probably alright, but really not my style. 2/5
Just not my genre
Relevant, but not easily digestible this is the music of a revolution and the soundtrack to change in west Africa. A mix of Afro-beat and Jazz that as anthemic as it is intricate.
While I recognize the cultural impact, this album had, and the musician ship included, I simply did not connect with the genre
Not something I would have found before, not sure if I will end up listening again but did not hate it
While the lyrics are quite tame now, when this came out it ruffled a lot of feathers with the government. Musically I thought it was good but not great. Often long-winded.
Well…
The first two tracks were quite nice. Pretty upbeat and interesting instrumentation, but I was absolutely done after 20 minutes. It got more of a slog as it went on. The third and fourth tracks I didn't like at all.
Tällainen jammailu toimii levyllä vaikka live on varmasti hyvä.
Miinusta heikosta uudelleenkuunteluarvosta (huom. edellä mainitut "osuudet").
I didn't enjoy it that much. Not my genre or cup of tea, and the songs take too much time to "set in".
I kind of got the picture by the first song. Sure, it was pretty jazzy and catchy, but I would probably never go out of my way to listen to this again.
Easy listening but all very samey, not my sort of music but I can appreciate why others would like it
Decent enough and better for me than others I have commented on that were not for me. So rather than the usual 1 I will give it 2 but that is it. Leave me alone
It’s pretty fantastic in style but not very smooth nor pleasant.
Interesting story behind the album. I think I am listening to it in the wrong environment to fully appreciate. Not really my thing, maybe in the summer.
This song is a banger, but really it's just the one 20 minute song broken to into 2 parts.
Better than I expected but hard to think of a time where I would be in the mood for this type of music
I looked into the history of this one and holy shit. I really do rate the wind instruments in this but musically that's about the only praise I can really give it. Not enough happens in this to hold my attention and each song is too long and repetitive. Not the worst thing I've ever heard though
Fine to listen to in the background but quite repetitive.
Nice story and all but just not feelin' it.
Really like the energy of the title track The rest kind of blended together for me
I feel I like Fela is better in small doses. This album really started to sound samey the further I got into it. Decent, but slightly irksome. 2/5
A jazzy Afro centric album that was easy to listen to but nothing that impressive. I don’t have a ton to say about this one other than it was better than expected but I don’t think I’ll revisit it. 3.2/10
Meh
African jazz. Interesting, I can hear how this may have influenced other bands, bringing some of the style into their own music.
Never been a fan of jazz, but always give it a try if I have the chance. This album didn't manage to change my opinion about it. Just feel empty and nothing else while listening to it. They do know their instruments though and their vocals don't sound any bad. /2
I like this music but other than background music this one didn't catch me all that much.
p370. 1976. 2 stars African jazz-funk background music. Pleasant enough, but outstays its welcome. Probably best enjoyed outdoors at a music festival on a sunny day when smoking a quality spliff. Unfortunately you rarely any of those in Stoke. Unlikely to listen to this again.
I dont like jazz
Definitely 10/10 for distracting yourself from an incessant inner monologue. I can fuck with any sexy wind instrument.
Meh
Absolutely love the percussion beats throughout this album. The fusion of genres are interesting and add a nice dynamic. Where this album loses me is with the horns. They're used to great effect when accenting the lyrics or to convey emotions, however every song begins with a 6-8 minute build driven by the horns without introducing any ideas or emotionally resonating. As such, I found myself struggling to continue, despite knowing I would enjoy each track by the 9 minute mark.
The music was just there and at points it got a little long. The music itself is difficult to describe. It has a lot of horns. I didn't get into this album. I won't be revisiting it. I will round up.
Short and sweet
Meh
Jazzy. Took ages to listen to.
A bit annoying. Not as good as Skrillex.
Note quite my style. Very one-dimensional and repetitive.
“The album infuriated the government, setting off a vicious attack against the Kalakuta Republic (a commune that Fela had established in Nigeria), during which one thousand soldiers attacked the commune. Kuti was severely beaten, and his elderly mother was thrown from a window, causing fatal injuries.”
"Fela Kuti, da ist noch richtig was los!“ sagen Deichkind und diese Aussage ist unrichtig. Vielmehr ist diese Platte unglaublich klischeehaft langweilig.
Not his best record and a little bit long for me. African rhythms plus jazz are a good combination. Cover art: 4/5
Not really my cup of tea to be honest.
Goes on a bit, liked the second track better than the first, but don't think I'll revisit it.
Jazz. **
Good
just not for me at all, too long and winding
Instrumentals were pretty good. Strange lyrics and backup vocals.
2/5
Being disconnected from the political situation that inspired the album and not having the technical knowledge to judge the instruments' execution, the album feels repetitive at times to me.
First listen 2/5
It’s fine for what it is. But if never choose to put it on.
Not my type of music
Man, that was weird.
Favourite Song: Zombie
Too repetitive for me. Felt like a random jam session with no real sense of direction. Best track: Zombie
12 minutes plus songs? Background listening...
MEh
Not a bad album but just didn't really get into it
Bit of fun, jazzy record, don't know enough about jazz or African music to tell if its any good
Didn't like the Jazz part as much, but the reggae influence was interesting
no
Honestly listened to the first song and decided the rest could go unheard. Not that it was bad, just did not have the attention span to listen to it.
well where do i even begin, not only does this album have 4 tracks, they each last 10 minutes? and most of it is instumental, some songs should simply not be released and or put out and that is fine, then when there is acctually lyrics, they just repeat the same words over and over, no meaning or lesson at all, ummmmm
Pointless Hate albums with very long tracks Hate albums with hardly any lyrics Hated it
just too droning
also.. sind afrobeats. klingt für mich aber nach jazz iwie und die lieder sind alle ü12 min. außerdem heißts, es is sehr politisch, was sicher gut und wichtig is… aber idk.. würds ma trz nicjt nochmal anhören i guess..1/5
No me parece muy interesante
Its just not my cup of tea.
This album is brief, uninspiring for me, and i was grateful it was over.

Not for me
Too jazzy.
This is not my style. 3 long songs with a couple repetitive lyrics
Glad when this finished ,

Garbage
This is making my headache worse.
not my vibe at all brodie
More endless Jazz noodling...
Too long for me. I agree; it's fun, it's new, and it's refreshing for this shit list. Even though it's not my jam, today I heard something that I wouldn't have been able to find on my own. THIS IS WHAT THE PURPOSE OF THIS LIST SHOULD HAVE BEEN. I know about the story behind the album and I get that it's really important, but that doesn't mean I'm gonna enjoy my time listening to this. It's too much of the same thing. I'm actually really sorry for my rating, but it has to be done.
Not my vibe
Whatthefreak?
Nice beat... aww, fuck... there's a sax... lots and lots of sax... damn, I really hate sax... wait, this track is 12 minutes long?! I don't think I'll make it... oh, a voice! Thank God - something different! Uh... tinkling zombies? OK, I think we're done here. Fortunately, I listened to the original LP version and lost only 25 minutes of my day.
who is actively listening to this? its like background music I can appreciate the background of the album tho
Pass
i see the vision, but the vision is not for me. do not really recommend
Not a fan
the songs are very longgg, and its mostly instrumental.. sorry i got bored listening to it:-(
The instrumentals are boring and repetitive. On the other Fela Kuti album "Live!" the vocals make it interesting, but there are few vocals here.
Really not a fan at all. Difficult to just get through the first song. 1/5 for me.
4 songs but still 53 mins is soooooo much x it’s jazzy and I don’t tend to like this stuff but I rly didn’t hate it! But I’d never play it again x
So far this app has suggested exactly 0 good albums and I've been doing this for 3 weeks. Another shit album.
0.5/5 I sometimes listen to jazz in the background when I just want something in the background and I could see myself putting on some Fela Kuti but I couldn't listen to it by itself. Very repetitive and when they are 12-13min songs it ends up being a looooong listen. I actually didn't mind these songs, but after 4-5mins of each track I grew tired and weary.
I really thought Id like it more and I do want to get into jazz but this did not do it for me. Maybe I havent accquired the taste for this aspect yet, but for now its either a 1 or a 2.
African jazz
All very long songs. Not sure if they’re really my style. Might skip through them. Definitely not my style at all. Sure the songs are good if you’re into jazz or the instruments.
The build up of every single song takes way to long, it's just 4 minutes of the same, followed by another 4 minutes of the same...
4 songs 53 minutes… not my favorite.
Unterirdisches gejammere ohne Struktur.
I had an insanely visceral reaction to this song. Never heard of Fela Kuti before this and while I respect his mission, it legit felt like my throat locked up. I couldn’t breathe. Not a fan.
hated
One was too many, but two albums by Fela, no thank you. Four 12+ minute songs that just go on and on forever. I don't appreciate jazz, don't understand it, it doesn't make me want to move or even keep listening. I'm sure they're great musicians but that noisy horn is ear splitting and just not enjoyable. I made it 2 mins into the title track before I had to pause and regroup. Then the nonsensical, flat, repetitive vocals kicked in to completely ruin my experience. If you made it to the 9 minute mark without fast forwarding you're a badass, or maybe a dumbass! "Mr. Follow Follow" had some musical moments but again, in come the vocals and the screaming backup singers. Nope. I was literally looking around for a door to walk out of. I made it halfway through "Observation..." and threw in the towel altogether. No bueno. Hard to throw one star out but it's the least I can do, literally. NOT Top 1001 worthy, not by a longshot!
Ne, wieder eine Enttäuschung (für meinen Geschmack)!
I can't decide, if I'm just very tired, still reeling from QPR's 7-1 defeat at Coventry, or just not in the mood... But Fela's not my fella today. I struggled with the length of, and lack of variation in, the title track. As a result of that, and the fact that Jane had already turned off the hotel room lights, I'm skimmed tracks 2&3 before giving up entirely. I'm not shaking my booty to Kuti
Rom h do g hi pol is my favorite song
Sounds like halfway through zombie a cat started walking on the keyboard.
Very talented but not one I would enjoy listening to
N.l.
PEREZOTEEEEEE
On an album (?) of just two tracks it was two tracks too many. "Mister Follow Follow" hit my ears as an unwelcome noise until the vocals started, which was 7 minutes or so into the song. One star. Would I listen to this album again? No. Would I but the album? No. 1 "Zombie" 2 Stars 2 "Mister Follow Follow" 1 Star Total - 3 stars Average - 1.5 stars
Ass!
Just 4 rambling jazz songs that really seemed to have no point. Not sure why this is so important for us to hear. Definitely don’t ever need to hear it again.
I’m sure it’s fine as far as Nigerian music goes. It’s just not my taste at all! I’m not a fan of jazz and it has that vibe. Even though it was only four songs, it was still a struggle to get through. Interesting history, though.
Hated it. Would give it zero stars if able. Long and pointless songs.
Not my kind of jazz. 1/5
Not for me
Not my jam.
WTF, 1001 greatest albums? No stars if I could
Initially, I understood the message of the album and even started to enjoy the sound a little. But at some point, it ended up getting boring due to the long length of the tracks. For those who manage to get to the end, it's a great experience. That wasn't the case for me.
Maybe not my stuff.
scheiße

Not mine style of music
Not for me.
First "jazz" album I didn't enjoy although I guess this is trending more funk than jazz. Either way, not for me.
I thought I loved jazz but I think this is too experimental and too mucn for me so maybe I don't love it as much as I thought.
2 albums on this list from Fela Kuti and yet only one for Otis Redding...WTF
Yeah, I still hate jazz.
Not my thing
Couldn't get into it...
The album was so good until they started "singing" aka saying zombie over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over. 1/5. The instrumental sections were good but sadly I cannot overlook 5 minutes of someone saying zombie. Genuinely the opening track ruined the album. Still listened to the rest, they just didn't change my rating.
I do not like long mainly instrumental songs/albums
It’s really almost a perfect album.
4 songs, all at least 15 minutes.
Not something I would listen to again. Instrumentals are all off and out of tune with the lyrics throughout the entire album.
Oh, four songs? Nice! Oh, it's still almost an hour. No. No thanks. Listened for 5 minutes then turned it off. I hate this album.
Interesting. But not really my cup of tea.
I feel like I'm on some sort of drug (or should be) during these. 4 (long) songs on the whole album is crazy.
really?
gostei não. Achei longo e tedioso apenas
Booo
I don't like the trumpet sound and his songs sound boring to me. The trumpet is supposed to entertain me until the vocals come in but instead it's one dimensional and feels more like a music for some cultural festival rather than a song I would put on and let play for 10 minutes. He's an ok singer I wouldn't say he showcases some special level of singing skill as well in his songs. The worst album so far. Feels disconnected. If I could go lower I would.
Having read the background on this album, I appreciate the intent behind it and the risks Fela, and the band, took to produce it. That said, I find this largely irritating. Each song being both very long and very repetitive, I wonder if this is supposed to be trancey, in which case you've got to be out of your gourd to appreciate it. I get that other people really get something out of this, I just have no idea why. I've never understood why it takes, for example, 13 minutes of a repeating pattern with intermittent, random, soloing to 'say' something. I suspect this will appeal to those to get Davis' 'Kind of Blue' style jazz but, with respect, not for me.
Jesus
Not my cup of tea.
Pretty cool jam sesh. Pretty neat to hear such a vibrant style and performance, but just not for my listening pleasure
Zzzz
Eh Nah.
This is an Nigerian funk jam band. The story behind the album is more interesting than the album itself. It's a protest album against the Nigerian military. Its release resulted in the military attacking Kuti's cult compound. This is a weird combination of a brain washing cult actually being right about the government. Anyway, the music is protest music in the vein of funk jam. None of which interests me.
Jazz with the tribal chanting over it was cool at first but now all these albums literally the exact same
Náði þessari plötu ekki...
I can't, it's making my anxiety race along with the music.
