Reviews (page 10 of 12)
Some of this album is great, some of it's too weird for me.
Loved the album and almost all songs. The only thing is, these are not the kind of songs I would put on repeat. I would listen to them if they were in a playlist but I don't think I would willingly play the song.
It's okay I guess
I don’t remember all that much from Friday. I remember enjoying it. Kinda takes an almost rap influence, but with some catchy guitar and slide work. Good casual listening
another quality album from Beck very well produced, if not over produced probably wont g back and listen again though
Reminds me of a proto-alex g I appreciate the sonic diversity and how many genres this guy blends. Not every song was a hit for me but not for any particular reason. Ultimately though i think i didnt totally connect with this album, but i appreciate it for what it is.
Just fine. Not bad at all, but not something I would listen to over and over.
3.5
I figured getting Beck would mean getting early 90s Beck. This is 2000s Beck and just not as special. It's certainly not bad and there are some really enjoyable and creative parts. But as a whole, not his best work.
E-pro: Really like this one! Heavier than I expected from what little I know of Beck. Reminds me of Jack White's later stuff (I promise I don't mean that as an insult) Que' Onda Guero: I really like the instrumental here, but Beck's rapping is not my favorite. Song has a good energy to it. "James Joyce"? Genius claims this is in reference to the stream of consciousness style of the song. Interesting. Girl: Doesn't catch my attention mostly, really liked the slide guitar solo though. Missing: I enjoy the strings, but also doesn't catch me besides. Black Tambourine: Love the beat here, I don't know what kind of drums those are but I love them. The distortion on that guitar makes this one of my favorites in the album so far. Earthquake Weather: Strong intro, is that a harpsichord? Hell Yes: Not enjoying the hook on this song. Love the instrumental though. I'm noticing a pattern with the more hip-hop influenced song on this record where I really enjoy the instrumental but find Beck's delivery weak. Broken Drum: Love the guitar tone, reminds me of an Orville Peck song. Per wikipedia, apparently Jack White actually did play bass guitar on this record. Makes sense. I didn't know Jack White had ever touched a bass though! Go It Alone: Great bass and rhythm generally but otherwise a bit sparse. Farewell Ride: I'll never say no to slide guitar. Rental Car: The heavily distorted guitar from the first song is back! Happy to hear it again.
Mid
It grew on me! There were some bits that I zoned out but overall it was good
Tää oli ihan jees!
Feels like classic Beck, which is fine but... the kinda tongue-in-cheek Beck isn't really my cup of tea. It's well done but not my jam. That synth at the start of Girl is dope as hell though.
Losers Odelay
I think this record was seen as a "return to form" for Beck after Sea Change. This is definitely reminiscent of some of his 90s work like Odelay. It just doesn't have that same charm to me. This record is more influenced by the mid-2000s garage rock revival that was happening at the time, like bands such as The Strokes and White Stripes. Solid record.
Really enjoyed the music on this album Beck's singing style isn't my favorite.
It was alright.
Beck have original style. There aren't many bands with this mix of genres. It's chill and has a certain vibe. But it gets a bit monotone...
Typical Beck album, loses momentum for a good portion towards the middle. At it's best when pulling from different cultural soundscapes. Best Song(s): Que Onde Guero, Missing, Earthquake Weather Listen Again: Probably not
Nothing special.
Lively, upbeat, decent listen
"Guero" is the ninth studio album by American musician Beck. Influences for the album were the September 11th attacks, the death of friend Elliot Smith and an impending child with his girlfriend. It was produced by the Dust Brothers (Joe King and Mike Simpson) and Beck. Güero is Mexican slang for a blond-haired Californian. Commercially, the album did well peaking at #2 in the US, and, critically, the album had generally positive reviews. A heavy guitar and loud drums open the first single "E-Pro." Electronic beats and a loop guitar riff. Sampling the Beastie Boys "So What'cha Want." "Qué Onda Guero" has Beck rapping. This is more along the lines of hip hop. He's describing LA and there are various, random street sounds/noises and actually a little bit of a Latin vibe. "Girl" has a synth melody. An interesting unique acoustic guitar interlude. Beck repeating "Hey, my sun-eyed girl." The third single "Hell Yes" has a deep bass and drums. There's a groove. Scratching going on. Beck back to rapping. Distorted vocals through the vocoder. And, yes, Christina Ricci also on vocals. Another guest appearance with Jack White on bass in "Got It Alone." Funky. Handclaps and drums. A buzzed-out guitar comes in midway through. He'd rather walk it alone. This is a decent album. I'm a little surprised in its inclusion in the 1,001. It's defintely not at the level of the two previous albums I had, "Sea Change" and "Odelay." But, hey there's variety here with rock, blues, hip hop and rap. There's really no bad filler. The singles are decent and for them worth a listen.
Wasn't too big of a fan of Missing Liked the first song's guitars and drums Overall I like the vocals, very well mixed with the instruments Scarecrow - I liked the guitar riff that played throughout the song, the combination of ominous sounds playing quietly throughout the song gave off "open-field" vibes. The main chorus when the harmonica (I think it was one?) played underneath it really brought out the "open-field" vibes I wasn't a super big fan of the whole album, I liked some songs more than others, although that may be because of listening fatigue.
It's alright
Beck is an artist's musician. That is to say there's a lot to unpack from a technical perspective, toying with different techniques and concepts, but as a casual listener I don't find it particularly interesting. If I were a musician, I could probably better appreciate the music more than just the occasional catchy track or two. Something about the pacing of his music just doesn't do it for me. It's slower, he draws out words, it's often lacking energy that I'm looking for when actively listening, but it's fine as something to throw on in the background. Inoffensive static that won't override conversation in the room or distract you if focusing on a task.
It’s fun but okay for me.
3.5 stars
A good album for background music. I liked some songs more than others. I think it needs a few more listens to get really into it.
He's more fun than I thought. I like him best when he's doing half rap, half singing. Favorite song: Que Onda Guero
Personal review: 6.5/10 Fun album but nothing special
Terribly boring listen. I supposed it’s ok
This isn't one of his best LPs and yet, it's still awesome. Love the bossa nova influence on some of the tracks. Beck is a treasure.
I've always been interested in diving into Beck ever since his unexpected Grammy win for "Album of the Year" in 2015. And after reading the mixed reviews on here, it's made me extremely curious about jumping having THIS be my jumping point. Especially since its an distinguished enough album to make it on this list so here are my thoughts: I came out this both confused and impressed. Beck has a talent with constructing melodies and bringing people into an atmosphere but solely based on a one day listen this wasn't enough material to instantly wow me. I'm realizing that I'll have to give this a relisten to truly grasp the purpose of what he was doing here. But right now, I'll chalk it up to not being able to appreciate the artistry. Give it a 3 1/2.
Best Song: E-Pro
Good album! Not to my taste but its a really nice easy listen. I really liked the grungy sounds of the vocals backed up with a funky drumbeat
Some good some bad, feels pre hipster in a way with some of the rapping-solid but wouldn’t come beck…6/10
HL: "Qué Onda Guero", "Earthquake Weather", "Broken Drum", "Rental Car", "Scarecrow" 1st Beck album Can't deny this album has style, but I've never been super taken with Beck's music. This offering does move the needle a bit, but I might have to revisit it a later time with an open heart. The crunchy overdrive in "E-Pro", "Rental Car" & "Go it Alone" remind me of truck commercial cock rock- but with more personality! also cheers to that other anonymous reviewer who namedropped Dzama (the album cover artist), now I have a Canadian art Wikipedia rabbit hole to follow 🍁🍁🍁 Listened to Demon Days by Gorillaz afterward, which I wouldn't say was a better or worse experience. They're both respectable 00's alternative to me 3.5 September 26, 2023
Aversge
It’s fine. It’s like Beck sat down to record a Beck album from the 90s but way slicker and less interesting. Idk it’s fine
I’ve always liked Beck’s brand of Alt, and apparently so do a lot of other people because he’s pretty much the poster child for Alternative music that turned into mainstream Indie over time. This is a pretty typical Beck album from my perspective: A few great songs but as a whole nothing I’ll go crazy for.
Better beck our there, but serviceable if you needed an emergency dose of Beck
Fav: Girls LF: idk, probably Missing Mid 6
very variable, high 3
It’s a solid enough rock album. You enjoy it while it’s on but forget it once it’s over.
6/10
Not my favorite Beck album, but fun and nostalgic.
After a whole lot of sh*t albums, this was just alright. Was really hoping for something amazing, but this was needed after some dog poo. He just isn’t totally my style but I can see the talent.
Upbeat Beck. I really appreciate that he really has a sound that translates no matter what's going on.
This album came out at a time where I was at my snobbiest. I'd turn my nose up at a lot releases from career-mature artists who didn't seem like they were bringing anything new to the table. In many instances, I was robbing myself of enjoyment; this is exemplified in my eventually-reversed low opinion of Interpol's Antics. With Guero, however, I hit the nail on the head.
A little slow to start, but most an enjoyable listen by Beck. Quirky and musically diverse in the best ways, although it feels a little more calculated and less natural than some of his earlier work. Enjoyed it, but Beck has done better. Fave Songs: Broken Drum, Missing, Black Tambourine, Earthquake Weather, E-Pro
particolare
A fun album with a number of known songs for me which will be saved into playlists. Very quirky and a different feel, worth a listen.
Interesting mix of pop, kinda lo-fi, and leaned towards cowboy blues at the end
🫡 7/10
Ugh, this one was tough to rate. I'd like to give it a 3.75. But I feel like it doesn't belong with some of the 4 stars. But I hate to round down. Ultimately, most 4 star albums are better, so I'm very reluctantly rounding down. On a different day I might round up.
Generally better than I remember liking Beck. Like quite a few of the songs, some others not quite as much.
There are a couple of alright tunes on here and I still like the general Beck vibe, but this also starts to sound same-sy. Beck same-sy, but same-sy all the same.
It's full of that mid 00s sonic indie sound. It's OK here and there but mainly just blank. Remind me of 15 other albums that has the sound of that time.
Standard Beck fair. Fine, but not sure why it’s on here
I like the first half. Weirdly aggressive lyrics at odds with the easy-going vibes. Girl is a creepy song. The second half is mostly cowboy songs and 60s pop pastiches, but Rental Car is back in the world of the funky psychopath.
Pretty rad.
Little bit heavy for me
Competent, but far from Beck's best.
It's a great record but it reminds me too much of my old neighborhood in Los Angeles. There's a lot of good but there's much more bad about that time near the rampart district.
Brings back memories of the late 90s. I prefer the old Beck to the new Beck 6/10
Meh, its okay but a one and done.
It's okay. Nothing to write home about.
A musically interesting album that I loved more 18 years ago than I do now. I liked some individual songs more than the album as a whole. Missing and Black Tambourine were where it started to pull me in more.
Very good
I thought, cool, a Beck album I haven't heard before, this should be cool and stuff. Turns out I had heard this before, just when listen to a different album. As Beck as you can get.
I like Beck a lot, but I remember after loving Sea Change being disappointed by Guero. After a listen, I still think it's a subpar effort.
Really hear album. Lots of variety. Would definitely listen again
Probably a 6.5 for me --- Favorites: Broken Drum, Girls, Que Onda Guero, Scarecrow --- Listened to a total of 2-3 times, would probably listen again
Sure, fine
Definite Beck sound, alright but probably not an album I would return to. 3*
It grew on me.
Eh Beck is ok.
The tracks on this album seem fragmented ... some not fitting in with others at all. Not Beck's best effort.
eh
Meh. One good song and a bunch of forgettable stuff. Not terrible, but why in the world would anyone put this on a list of 1001 albums that everyone should hear? 3/5
I sort of checked out on beck somewhere slightly south of Odelay.... like REM I feel like he dialed into something genuine pretty quickly, but I don't know that his sophisti-grunge with hip hop and remix trimmings really evolved much after that. I liked this well enough and he's certainly a clever lyricist - maybe a little too clever, you can almost miss that most of it doesn't say anything in particular.
I first heard of Beck in the mid 90s through the track Loser, and at that time I listened to the album Mellow Gold, which had a few decent tracks and the rest was crap. Roll on 10 years and he releases this "alleged" album Guero... and what do you know... First 3 tracks are OK... and the rest is crap, albeit this album is less appealing than his earlier stuff.
it’s cool but kinda boring. i like the acoustic funk numbers. go it alone sounds like a truck commercial tbh. probably wouldn’t listen again but it’s not a bad album.
It's ok, it's just not enough to get excited about
A return to his "two turntables and a microphone" after the lush and weepy Sea Change. But something has changed since Odelay, Beck sounds cleaner, tighter, more conscious about what he's doing. He sounds less exciting. Even with the Dust Brothers at the sliders the production lacks punch, I'm always wanting the songs to hit harder, but they rarely do. That being said, the first half is really good, it's great to hear Beck having fun again and the album is mostly good but it's far from being a classic in my book.
The first 5 songs are awesome and might be one of my favorite Beck moment. After this, the album fall in a smooth and more generic mood. It's nice, but nothing really stand out after that.
Not bad, but definitely not his best.
well done, not my style
I never really got into Beck. I always felt like he was the gateway to indie rock and for some reason that's always kind of made me feel distanced from his music. Plus he's always been really hyped up as this indie rock/pop darling and I am still working on trying to shake my evasion for art and artists that borderline on being over-hyped. First track is cool. There's this high pitched percussive timpany-like sound that is in the left ear and very unique. Super catchy hook too, and that's something that I think is consistent with his music. He has this sound where he is great at capturing the very specific moment of sitting down with a guitar, playing a riff, and humming over it to create a melody. It's this organic and natural way of songwriting that I always try to tap into that I find incredibly difficult. Writing this way is a good strategy to remove yourself as the performer and to empathize more with the listener. You are humming what you want to hear, and not writing a melody that you want to sing. This is a constant battle of mine. But he does it great. Overall I thought the album was a nice 3/5. I liked a lot of things and I think my bias of not knowing the album that well hurts the score a little. Production was entertaining and had many many unique ideas, and the songwriting was pretty fresh throughout.
There seems to me a definite 'Beck' structure to his albums. Not that it's a bad thing but if you're after exploring new sounds it's a rehash.
Like "Sea Change", only the first couple of songs are good. The rest are droning genericness. It's interesting how different the two albums' sounds are though. The raving rock of "Guero" and the melancholic folksy "Sea Change". Of course, we wouldn't forget his masterpiece, "Odelay", which showed how good an experimental rock can be. For some reason, "Guero" is also described as experimental. But in reality it's nowhere as colorful as "Odelay". Is this the last album that I should listen from him before I die? I hope so. Then I can summarize his major releases now: interesting, but a big hit-an-miss.
Yeah catchy album, I liked this, good album on the list.
Definitely preferred the ones that had a melody more than the rapping but it was still a good album. Production was solid throughout and I’m looking forward to going back to this one. The first song made me think it was gonna be like cage the elephant before they were a thing and I wish he leaned more into that style but there were still some other bangers. Not quite a 4 for me cuz there are a number of skips but it’s a high 3 and I plan on going more into his music. 👍: e pro, broken drum
Some cool tracks. Bummer he’s a scientologist.
Again, I wish there were 1/2 stars. With my system, there has to be at least 1/2 the album with 4-star songs to make it a 4-star record. This one is a very good record, but not 4-star. 3 1/2! Some great songs for sure, but then the rest is just pretty good.
This wasn't so bad, I feel like hipsters would listen to this in an attempt to be different
A good, contemporary bit of fun. It’s like an auditory journey through a busy city.
Solid Beck album, 4* in my memory (18 years ago), but it is a bit too long - even though there are some great songs at the end. Not in the same league as Odelay. I previously rated that album as 4*, so 3* for Guero seems appropriate. Favourite song: Scarecrow, one of the best songs Beck has written.
This sounds like a remake of Odelay, just less convincing in nearly every aspect. Having said that, it's still a good albums of course.
Interesting.
This is the second Beck album I've listened to, the other one being Sea Change. I found this one to be much less my style. I liked his less industrial, more mellow songs on this album. I found the album to get better towards the later tracks. Overall I enjoyed it but I wouldn't say I'd listen to it all the way through again. Favorite Song - Missing, Broken Drum Least Favorite Song - E-Pro, Que Onda Guero These songs being back to back almost made me stop listening to the album. I just couldn't stand the industrial sound in "E-Pro" and the random Spanish dialogue in "Que Onda Guero" got really annoying after a while. No Skip Album? - No
I like Beck, but im a bit surprised to see this album here. It's hardly horrible, but I know he's done better work. That said, checking the album info shows this is his best selling album, so I guess there's that. There's some great tracks on here, but I don't think it has the flair of something like Odelay
As a man who once strangled his younger brother to death, I can safely say that I regard this record as as wonderful soundtrack to kill to. Try it.
Beck sounds a lot like Chris Cornell on Missing. Hell Yes is a great track. Love the country western flare.
I haven't heard a lot of Beck's music, but I like what I've heard, and now that includes this album. I was already familiar with one or two tracks but had not heard the rest. I like the way Beck writes and composes songs, and they are always performed so well.
Feels like a record which should have more of a fixed identity, but still manages to hit the hits.
E-Pro is the only song I knew of going into this album. I was pleasantly surprised by Guero. Not exactly a memorable album but it had some chill sounds and feels like it would be good when you just want some non-intrusive background music.
Not his best nor his worst.
This is a fun beck album with songs I’m familiar with. Epro and girl are some older hits from my youth. The whole album had a nice mix of Spanish and 80s influences with a modern style that made it fun and refreshing. Beck has always been an interesting guy snd his music show that. This is one worth revisiting and is a fun listen. 7.1/10
I feel like this album tries everything all at once, with varied results. Overall a good album, but maybe could use a little focus.
Starts off really strong, the first two tracks are great. The album is pretty long and the later parts are less interesting
3.6 - A solid pop record, probably Beck at his most crowd-pleasing. A few colorful ornaments here and there to keep things interesting. Standouts: “Girl”, “Rental Car”, “Broken Drum.”
This was a good album. Not my favorite album, but it was good. I give it an even 3, Erica a low 4.
A solid album. Pleasant to listen to, even though I don't remember any particular melodies. Kinda like Beck's style. His singing voice was different on two songs I think? + Missing + Earthquake Weather + Send A Message To Her
Lošiji odalay
Listened Before? N Pretty good. Beck has been hit and miss for me but this one is mostly a hit. I don't have a ton of thoughts about it but I understand why it's on the list. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Que' Onda Guero
There are a couple of good songs like “E-Pro” and “Girl”, but nothing really moved me. Interesting mix of hip/hop, electronic, rock, and small elements of country. Favorite songs: E-Pro, Girl, Earthquake Weather, Scarecrow, Rental Car, and Emergency Exit.
I think Beck is pretty alright. Not a musical genius, but not terrible either. Pretty alright. 3 stars.
E-Pro is a great alt rock #1 track. Girl is a great follow up. The rest of the album is typical Beck. Which is always good. 3.5
One of the most authentic and creative musicians. Not sure whether to compare his musical diversity to Tom Waits or his sampling to Malcom McLaren more. Cool sounds but the songs just lack a certain emotion and catchiness to sell them to a 4.
A for effort and creativity but in all this, I personally just wasn't picked up by the album. I can appreciate the genius behind it but personally it doesn't do more than just entertain me decently
I like Beck but kind of found this to be a middling album for him. I definitely recognized a number of the songs but realized I never really gave this one too much time when it came out. There were a few standouts but for the most part it felt like this album was just going through the motions. Standout Tracks: E-Pro, Qué Onda Guero, Black Tambourine, Emergency Exit
Good but not great, very serious by his standards, a few good songs but a lot of filler.
groovy but a little annoying
I think this is a fine album, but it's not one of my favorites by Beck. This, Odelay, and Sea Change are all on this list. I think that Odelay, Midnight Vultures, and Morning Phase would be the three Beck albums that I would pick. However, this is all a matter of opinion, and other folks are entitled to theirs This album benefits by being produced by the Dust Brothers, who also worked on Odelay. What bothers me about this album is that it doesn't feel like he's doing anything new here. A lot of this album feels like Odelay II: Not as Good as Odelay. I guess you could say that this album focuses more on chill grooves from Beck, but I feel like I can get that anywhere. It makes me feel like commercial success is doing a lot of heavy lifting for this album, whereas there are multiple albums that are far more musically interesting that could be on this list 3/5
Meh, this was alright. I did not get much from it.
Heel herkenbaar Beck. Wel oké
Typical Beck album. Some songs are genius, some start well and then turn into noise
I've always been weirdly mid on Beck considering how much he checks the boxes for something I'd like. This definitely feels in line with the better stuff like Odelay but still just not exceptionally exciting to me.
Nice and cheerful, if a bit too long for its own good. I like how Beck is able to completely reinvent himself with every album. Not that many people can claim similar levels of talent.
I really want to like Beck. I feel like I SHOULD like Beck. It just refuses to click with me.
Solidly middle-of-the-road, easy listening album
Like the previous Beck album, this was a decent listen but not something I need to hear again.
I thought I was going to rate this higher, I had this CD back in the day and it is very nostalgic that me. It is the only Beck album I've ever been into. I think each Beck song is very one-dimensional, that one dimension is quite good though. Every song revolves around one hook which Beck comes back to over and over. It works on tracks like E-Pro, Girl, Black Tambourine where he keeps it tight and moving, but by the second half of the record he starts to jam out and the tracks just go nowhere like on Farewell Ride and Broken Drum. He's got talent there just isn't enough for me to latch on to.
Pretty good! Some good jams on here.
Gutsy move to put yourself into the category of musicians who only go by one name, like Madonna, Cher, and Prince. But here Beck is. Great for listening while shopping at a local food store when you’re inspired to try a new Balsamic vinaigrette. Beck is obviously a talented musician, and I couldn’t stop saying hell yes during a couple songs. But on the whole, I didn’t fully connect to the album as much as I wanted to or expected to. I was looking for the emergency exit for at least half the of the songs. The thing I admire about Beck, is his ability to change his voice and singing style for different songs, some being rap-style, some bluesy, and most are folk. Musically, each song usually has a main riff/hook that rides the entire song, and if it’s good, the song is great. Like my favourite on the record - Black Tambourine. However, if the hook is not good…well, then l want to dispose of it like a rental car. I won’t even fill it up with gas before returning it. Not a bad listen at all. E-Pro and Farewell Ride are bangers. But overall, I found something was just missing from the whole experience.
Overall I liked this album. Some funny lyrics and some fun musical moments.
I like Beck's work for the most the part. I just felt that this album was underwhelming.
this is definitely one of the lesser beck albums. fine, but not what i expect from him
Nine studio albums in, Beck is still working the same junkyard arrangements, double-tracked vocals, lazy slacker melodies and hip-hop raps that could have been lifted from any of his previous albums. The sonics on track like "Hell Yes" have already previously been explored on albums like *Mellow Gold* and *Odelay", rendering them superfluous here.
It was a much more mature Beck and it was a lot less innovative Beck. It was more listenable but less memorable. That is to say, there was nothing offensive on this album but I can't say it was an album I needed to hear.
More less
some decent tunes but boring
Hell Yes sounds like he's trying to do a grown up Where It's At. And it's terrible. Where It's At had groove, funk, uniqueness. Hell Yes has nothing. Go It Alone has that kind of roots rock/blues/soul feel that you can picture in a Coen brothers movie. And Farewell Ride has that chain gang/dry landscape feel that would fit also. But even though they are some of the only songs to standout to me, they don't standout enough to actually appear in a Coen brothers movie. I guess what I'm saying is... This was a bit of a nothing to me. Not bad, just a bit bland. I was a big Odelay fan in the day, and even when he tries to channel Odelay such as Hell Yes or Missing, it's like it's been ran through a dishwasher. Really, quite disappointing. I have since found out that Karen O was in Rental Car. Why include someone like her with such great emotional range only to have her go "la la la" and filter the absolute hell out of it? This makes it hard to rate. 3 stars for the actual songs. 2 stars for the disappointment, so 2.5 stars rounded down for the weird Karen O bit.
geit eso
for me its just mid. i liked some songs but it jumps around a lot
boring
Ill be honest and say I didnt give this the most honest of listens but man do I really find Beck to be an absolute snoozer. The worst guy in the comic book store. The man arguing over 50 cents at the grocery store.
Still struggling to get into Beck. Very different genres and styles throughout the album, I appreciate the gusto to try new things.
It had some interesting ideas and at one point I could even hear a tune I could enjoy. Then it went sidewards. I love weird, but this dosen't use it well.
A little boring but not bad
Kinda mid
Boring album some of the beats are good but lyrically not impressed 3/10
Eh, not a big fan of hip-hop. 1st song was kinda nice though
My second Beck album on this list. Once again very underwhelming, not as bad as the previous one though (Sea Change) which was dreadful. This is not for me.
hemroso y sencillo
E-Pro sounds like a song for a really cool ad 😎 His voice reminded me of Rufus Wainwright and Car Seat Headrest at times. 😯💦 My favorites are Girls and Earthquake Weather. ☁️ I say favorites, but I don't see myself listening to them again. The album was pretty interesting in the beginning, but it got boring by the end. I don't love any songs, but I don't hate any either. I had a good time listening though, I closed my eyes and relaxed 😊 Thank you.
Otiose
Its okay. A little repetitive, a little jazzy. Goes a little too bleep bloop when it should be duggadung.
Pistas destacadas E-Pro Guero Missing
There are songs here, but I just can't love Beck
Of all Beck albums, why this one?
Most of it sounded rather droll, a few good songs did not balance out the rest
Good album from a large catalogue by Beck
meh, nothing special in my personal opinion
A tired, spent Beck is better than the sad broken Beck of Sea Change, but Guero felt like a flailing, desperate re-tread then and it still does now. Paul and I had being making the microchip beats of Girl about five years before this. We were hardly at the cutting edge, but to be so far ahead of Beck was embarrassing for all of us. The harmonically static hits of Odelay - Devil's Haircut and The New Pollution - compensated for their statis with an absurd ebullience, but, here, Que'Onda Guero gets stuck in one spot without any such charm, eerily reminiscent in form of Jump Around. Earthquake Weather is likeable and nothing is bad - we have heard much worse - but, although Beck is acting like his mojo had been sitting there for him to reactivate, Guero is a staid, safe record by a man who still hasn't recovered from a love lost and just wants to be loved by us. 1.5 ‘I ache in the places where I used to play’ Leonard Cohen, Tower of Song You observed yesterday that criticising Coldplay was an exercise in futility, before I expended one of my longest reviews (I think) in criticising Coldplay. Surely you won’t say the same of Beck’s Guero. Another of my longest reviews - possibly my longest - was bestowed on Beck’s Sea Change. This was because there is limitless intrigue when an obviously great artist loses his way, but mainly because lots of other people like Sea Change and there is nothing I like better than explaining that, if not exactly ‘why’, lots of other people are wrong. Well Guero isn’t much good either. And it is an especially sad thing for me that, actually, not so many people take the contrary view. Where Sea Change has its true acolytes, painting it deep, moving, and beautiful - no one is inspired to say so much about Guero. It was even one of the few albums removed from subsequent editions of the 1001 albums book. It sold. It pleases. It has Jack White as a guest. You can see how the original editors made their mistake. So why should I get the whacking stick out, really? The long and short of it is that Beck, post-Sea Change, went in search of his Beckiness again and didn’t quite find it. What makes Odelay great (mercifully that is the other Beck album on this list so the Beck selections weren’t a complete fuck-up) is the sense throughout that Beck either doesn’t know or doesn’t care that we are listening. He is having fun; he is amusing himself. Ditto Mutations and Midnite Vultures. Guero doesn’t have that. Beck knows we’re listening now. He wants us to enjoy ourselves. He wants us to dance. He wants us to think the drums and guitars sound awesome. The mix is careful and, frankly, commercial. The lyrics are careful and contained - even making sense a lot of the time. Beck is very talented but it is a deeply self-conscious record. Beck is not having fun. That much is plain as day. I could have stopped at the Leonard Cohen quote, couldn’t I? 1.5/5
Appreciate the production and some guitar work but didn’t really connect with the vibe of the album
The Good: We get to learn a new word! The Bad: Changing the O for an A means dirty… The Ugly: Being a guero guarro… So I forgot an r… shit happens. Beck forgot an excellence, when creating this album. The real good news, however, is that this marks the last Beck album I need to listen to on this list. Odelay was enjoyable, this album, and the other one on the list, not so much. For me, it is starting to feel like Beck is more than a one-trick pony, he’s a shaman who’s been able to fool millions in believing him! Good for him. 2* to keep his hope alive...
I struggle a bit with Beck, I think if I listened to this more it might grown on me
It’s alright, pretty forgettable.
nah
Not my favorite beck album
Few good songs that added to playlist. Not fully my type of music but i get it Thinking 2
It’s only a 2 because Go It Alone elevates this album. Otherwise this has no heart at all
kinda long
Most songs felt like they grabbed a decent loop, but then rode it without change. Maybe not listening closely enough for the subtleties, but the laconic stylings of Beck just don't make me want to put in the work.
girl i'm Bored.. there is so much and also nothing going on at the same time 2/5
incohesive and messy, experimental to an almost obnoxious degree i fear 1.5-2/5
Struggling to rate with all the genre bending but luckily it's all pretty lame. Strap yourselves in, I see there are three Beck albums on here. Was he really that unmissable?
zzzzzz
Beck is a good musician, he's proved that plenty of times. I think he did more so on Sea Change than here because bleh, from Earthquake Weather to Scarecrow I eagerly clock out and that's a good chunk of the record. This album is very well mixed and well played and well informed and blah blah but it's not riveting to me. Second track was funny. There are good moments here and there, but I probably won't come back to this.
When people say they like alternative rock, I find they either lean more towards the 80s or 2000s. As for the 90s, there are parts of the 90s that lean either to the 80s or 2000s. And me, well, I lean towards the 80s. And this here is that 2000s alternative rock. You know, I swear every new rock band is alternative rock nowadays. It makes sense though... as the other big umbrella would be the more "classic" rock which isn't the thing anymore. Now it's all indie-alternative rock. If only rock today was more analog and less "perfect"/overproduced. Well, I can still listen to the more analog stuff, so it doesn't really matter, does it And this, this is 2000s alternative rock
It all sounds the same. Not great but no complaints. Kinda like the hallmark movies of the music world. Sounds like I’m in a soundtrack to charmed or something.
Not for me 2.5
Beck is surely talented, but I don't really like his sound
this one was a huge disappointment. the first two songs were fantastic, the second one had my jaw on the floor. then we immediately start going downhill, i found most of the rest of the album to be extremely cringe. the way he speaks is so god damn annoying like he his a tiny mouth or something. i appreciate the sounds/beats he tries to incorporate in, i gave it a 2 instead of a 1 because each song really was unique and weird in a slightly good way. but he also put repetitive ass sound bits in some of the songs which really got on my nerves (Missing). also idk why people like Hell Yeah that might have been one of the worst songs i’ve ever heard like actually.
So, so dull. If you like it, great, every single song sounds the same, muddy and droning. 2.5/5
Previously unknown. It's fine but as a whole it's sort of boring and too similar.
I get why people like Beck, I just never have. Is he interesting? Yes. Is it very surprising he has hung on for so long and the amount of fans he has? Also yes. I just listen to him and find there weird isn't always good, it's often just weird. Add in that his voice isn't that good and it generally leads to mediocre music, at least to my ear. This album is more of the same, I am afraid, though there were a few bright spots. Hell Yes was kind of fun, certainly had some interesting parts to it. The lead track was good as well. Unfortunately, most of the rest of this was just no bueno.
Some interesting ideas here but ends up being quite boring
Idk
Second album by him and still don’t like it.
Definitely not for me
Ja vel
I love Loser which is the only decent Beck song. The rest are weird
has some good songs, then gets pretty boring
Already listened, not bad
Just not my thing in the slightest
Ughhhhh. It's fine but I truly can't be bothered with it 2.5/5 Songs added to playlist: - E-Pro - Go It Alone - Send A Message To Her - Non-LP Version
I remember this band from when this album came out. It wasn't really my music back then and while it certainly is better this time around its still not a genre I choose to listen to when I listen to music. Its slow rhythms and almost whining singing doesn't really work for me.
EHhhhhh 2.8.
Beats Eclectic
I found the tone boring, I afraid this didn't do much for me.
Boring
Mishmash of stuff that never really adds up to anything. List didn’t need multiple Beck albums.
This just wasn’t the album for me. I don’t like this genre.
This was fine. Didn't blow me away.
meu veredito é: RUIM
Patchy album with some interesting songs. Highlights are broken drum and farewell ride.
cancion fav girl y que onda guero
Thought it was boring too many tracks
I liked the play with Spanish, but again not a memorable album. No songs downloaded
I know it’s a legendary staple album but it’s just eh
Average
didn’t really excite me.
Had one half-decent genx song back in the 90s with Loser. He was overrated then but more overrated (and irrelevant) now. I've tried many many times over the years to get into Beck but honestly, this album is another example of forgettable mess. Stick down a riff... repeat it for the whole song... drone vocals over the top. Broken Drum is the best track... cos it doesn't sound like Beck.
Not my cup of tea, but easy to listen to
Not for me
Almost every song sounds like a dam freestyle,I mean the album is a meh not even an okay it's just so boring i mean this whole album makes You wanna cut off your ears. There are some songs that are fine but from my point of wiew the album its just so boring plain and confusing Bad,Bad,Bad,Bad and Bad just bad
A very experimental album, but it works! Very easy listening. Favourite track: Black Tambourine
Idkkkk i dont get it
Bland, and not to listen to. Don’t really understand its value tbh
This is pretty... mid. Few good songs but that does not make this album a great piece of art amongst other album in this list.
Not in my edition of the book! 2005. 2 stars. A re-tread of previous Beck albums but without the standout tunes. Not his best work and not essential listening.
Wasn’t my taste but objectively good music. Didn’t love the overall sound. Had never heard of Beck before so was good to be introduced to new music.
Pretty fun! Mostly engaging but was a bit meandering overall but that’s his style I guess. No strong feelings for or against.
A pretty underwhelming album from Beck. Fun and quirky highlights but in the most part a bland and samey album with not much to comment on.
Épico
Beck is extremely talented and there's a few bangers on this album.. But the album as a whole, I found it ok, while my wife found it abhorrent.
2.5
Not what I was expecting , good but..
Very versatile and kinda well done in every genre that it touches but kind of a mixed back to me. Since nothing sounds even remotely the same it kinda lost me in the way. Yes there are some cool influences but nothing really sticks out in nearly an hour of runtime. Probably good for fans but not for me.
Not my cup of tea
Forgettable and repetitive. This is the first time I am really confused as to how this made the list honestly.
Preferred Guerolito bc
not rlly my thing but i added 3 somgs soo
Not my taste, but I was able to listen without too much trouble.
It was okay not really the type of music i usually listen to.
for a beck album, this is pretty boring and uncreative
bit all over the shop
meh
I got pretty bored listening to this album. I do like the cover art, though.
pretty generic forgettable 2000s music
A bit meh
Certainly this album delivers on Beck's idiosyncratic sound, and shows him perfecting motifs and styles he helped to pioneer. Songs like Broken Drum stand out as Beck doing something different, but in his own way. But it is hard not to feel like it is a little too late for these soundscapes and mixed genre melodies to make a splash. At this point in time, Beck's sound was tried and true. Highly emulated throughout the late 90s and early oughts. We're left here with an album capstone-ing those sounds all the while Indie music was cascading onto the scene and changing the way pop and rock were being viewed. Add to this that Beck's sounds, though still his own and still experimental, were not breaching the Avante Garde anymore. Bands like Sufjan Stevens, Bright Eyes, Animal Collective, Sigur Ros, Spoon, The Decemberists, were all experimenting in new ways that would change music for the next 10 years. Guero is certainly worth a listen for Beck fans, but I am not sure it is deserving of taking the place of many other albums from 2005.
I’m comfortable enough with myself to stop pretending I care about Beck’s contributions to music
tre ord. no thank u
Bro I paused A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving (50th Anniversary Edition) for this
I’m not sure this needs to be on the list. It’s enjoyable enough, but it’s kind of standard issue Beck (which is good, don’t get me wrong). I can’t help but feel that there may be overlooked worthier contenders. Janet Jackson, say?
Fine. Farewell Ride was decent.
2/5
All over the place
Becomes less interesting the longer it goes on. It sounds very much like a Beck album, not sure why this is included ahead of others.
one of the most boring and uninspired albums i've heard
Like some of the music, hate when Beck does his sing/rap thing.
Not a fan of Beck
This list is losing cred by the day.
It’s not a bad record exactly (well...) but the expectations for this were high coming off a stellar run AND reuniting with the Odelay production duo. Alas, where Beck previously succeeded using vintage sounds and older styles, but skewed through his own unique prism, this just sounded kinda tired and played out. The sister album/follow-up The Information at the very least has a more compelling aesthetic, likewise the thrifty Modern Guilt, but Guero was confirmation that Beck had lost whatever made him special.
This album doesn't really change my opinion of Beck that much, although I did find a couple tracks that I liked. Not awful, but won't add it to my personal collection.
Not bad but he's got better albums
Fine, but not something I’d revisit.
hey I know e-pro and que onde guero is intriguing it's all a lot of unconventional things like dj sounds and less American more international sounds in some and samples and yeah interesting not really my type but the sounds were something I got bored at the end kinda repetitive, not really intriguing to me, doesn't make me feel anything feels empty first two were best ones
Best Song: Que'Onda Guero. It was a real funky beat that complimented Beck's weird delivery. Worst Song: Farewell Ride. An overly moody yeehaw song about horses with the appropriate number of eyes. Overall: This is a little bit better than the other Beck I've been offered, but I'm still not much of a fan. There's something grating about this monotone, disaffected quality that pervades all of his vocals. I listen to music to get affected. Give me something to feel for chrissake.
Just Beck being Beck. Some catchy stuff here but he really doesn’t have anything noteworthy to say. He probably would have been a better producer than songwriter.
Heavy on the breakbeat library but to be expected from mid naughties. Go it alone and farewell ride standouts. The rest in the bin.
borefest
Good instrumentals, chill vibe, but overall not my style.
meh. so meh
go white boy go
I thought the vibes would be more eclectic than it finnaly was, hoped more of that 8 bit keyboards in the intro of Girl sprinkled in more places. E-Pro is a banger and a Rockband classic. The riff of Send a Message to Her(which is a bonus track, didnt realized when I first heard the album) sounds like the one of Devils Haircut in a different key. I mean, its a good album, but its not something that I would say is worthy of a 1001 must listen album before you die list (Odelay and Sea Change would be my only picks) 2/5
tolerable
Upbeat and fun.
Not a beck fan
Ok. ★★
