Reviews (page 9 of 12)
Individuelt fede nok sange, MEGET forskellige.
I was a sophomore in high school when Mellow Gold came out, and that was a pretty important album for me. I’ve seen Beck in concert a couple of times. I liked Odelay, Midnight Vultures and Sea Change. I’ve owned all of those and Mutations and Stereopathic Soul Manure on CD or vinyl. I’d say I’m a moderate Beck fan. I listened to this album for a few weeks when it came out and tried to get into it, but it just didn’t do it for me. It’s fine, but it kind of felt like a rehash of old ideas by someone who didn’t have it any more. Relistening to it today did nothing to change that opinion. It has a few nice moments, but not enough to make it anything like an album you must hear before you die.
A decent album, but nothing I'm likely to be seeking out to listen to all that often.

Every song feels like it belongs to other album
My second Beck album and I fear there is more to come. This album was OK at best not one of his strongest, so I am very surprised it made the cut of this list. I really enjoyed the opening tracks E-pro, Girl and missing. Its was a strong start but the album moved to a more repetitive and slower middle and end. Beck's music is funky, with a hint of indie and grunge yet samy after a while as I do not feel he tries anything new and different. Its an average album. Favourite song: Girl Least favourite: Broken drum and scarecrow Album artwork: It’s a fun cover
I'm always kind of split on Beck. On one hand, his more alt-rock focused songs align pretty well with most of my musical tastes. On the other hand, the concept of "white guy rapping over rock instruments" can be grating if it's not done well (Beastie Boys being an exception). I will say the songs I enjoyed outweighed my distaste for the rest, so all in all this was a good record. I don't think I'm inclined to go out of my way for more Beck, but they're good in small doses in my opinion. Notable Tracks: - E-Pro - Black Tambourine - Scarecrow - good groove - Farewell Ride 6/10
Jordan - 3.5/5 it’s a really good Beck album and lots a variety. He just has a few better albums that I personally can’t go to a 4
Thoroughly enjoyed this. Good listen.
Didn’t love it, didn’t hate it. Good mix of songs, but none that I knew. Might need to listen again.
This is a good album and I enjoyed listening to it a few times. Solid 3. (not sure what all the fuss is about with Beck)
Great name - ok album The film clip for E-pro is an all time fave though
Kind of a weird feeling listening to this one. It's definitely Good Music, no doubt about it, but I'll probably never listen to it again. Except "Rental Car." That's a good one.
Probably more of a 3.5 imo. It has some high high’s and some low low’s
cool stuff, but a very unique style, not for all
Sounds like humorless (and therefore less successful) version of Gorillaz, mainly because the songs just ain't that fun or even interesting.
Great opening track, tailed off a bit thereafter though & started to drag a bit
Yet another ex-1001 album!™ http://1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie.wikidot.com/album-artists-a-z-ex I enjoyed it well enough, it's just that I don't know how to differentiate it from Beck's other albums on the 1001 list. Has a few standout tracks, the rest blend in around the edges.
Not as aggressively grating as the other Beck album I listened to. But there’s also nothing that I really loved either. It’s mostly fine. Wouldn’t have qualms listening again, however I’ll never seek this out intentionally again. 3/5
Didn't love, didn't hate. Solid 3. 3/5
Beck again. This seems much like another Odelay and I guess I have to think about how it just doesn't connect with me, again. Maybe it's those Dust Brothers and the kitbash eclecticism that Beck seems to happily succumb to. Small vignettes of random bits and pieces, bells and whistles stretched to the length of a track that ultimately amounts to just not much. Like, that's going to be nasty now: jingles. The slower Guero gets, the more these seem to take the shape of *songs* however and the more I like it, but this might only apply to "Broken Drum". It's quite adept at being what it is, I guess, but it's not for me and it's not important. Good decision to make it an Ex1001AYMHBYD.
Not bad
Surprising tolerable, when I heard samples for prior songs, I longed to listen to the original song that the sample pulled from instead of continuing with Beck's rip.
Beck returns to the *Odelay*-era mixing of styles that made him a household name in the first place, albeit also with mixed results, unfortunately. Not that the music on *Guero* is "bad", not by a long shot. Most of the songs will actually sound pretty good for anyone who loved Mr. Hansen's couple of early major-label albums. Linear yet driven *Guero* is the mandatory locomotive opening the proceedings, with its killer guitar riff taking a page out of "Devil's Haircut" ; "Girl" is a lively, sweet-sounding pop-folk number only belied by its sinister lyrics ; "Missing" takes a short detour though string-laden *Sea Change* territory ; jittery "Black Tambourine" offers David Lynch an occasion to use Beck's music for a hectic, hallucinatory scene in his own *Inland Empire*, *Hell Yes* is a quirky cold-funk / electro cut that wouldn't have felt out of place in *Midnight Vultures*, "Broken Drum" is a delicate and understated tribute to Elliott Smith ; Jack White comes to cash in a check by playing a riff he could have played in his sleep in "Go It Alone"... And so on, and so forth... The thing is, there is a distinctive *lack of stakes* in the music recorded here. And it's not merely because said music had been heard before in Beck's oeuvre. No one in their right mind would reproach that to countless great acts always digging the same groove, contrary to the endearing Californian kitchen-sink troubadour. No, the real problem is that the pace is often far more inert here compared to the early records of his discography Beck tries so hard to "copy-and-paste" for this one album (subsequent LP *The Information* would offer a more exciting experience in that regard). Besides, the way *Guero*'s tracklist is organized is also conducive to a very disjointed experience, triggering many "so what?" reactions. *Mellow Gold* and *Odelay* harboured myriads of twists and turns, and yet somehow, almost every hairpin curves in them--either between the songs or *inside* them-- was a "wow" moment. Decisively, those miracles don't happen here. I won't blame Beck himself for the misguided inclusion of this record on the list, though. The man is talented, and if the record comes off as if his heart wasn't fully into it, he was just doing his thing at least. The real issue is that someone in Dimery's team actually made a very lazy choice when they considered this LP for inclusion on the 1001 Albums book. Because it's taking up a slot that could have a far, *far* better use. 3/5 for the purposes of this list of "essential" albums. 8/10 for more general purposes (5+3) Number of albums left to review: 94 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 390 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 228 Albums from the list I certainly won't include in mine: 288 (including this one)
Groovy. Think this is the first time I’ve listened to him.
Some fun songs I already knew in this one. Back half of the album came and went for me, 3* Highlights: e-pro, girl
touched on a lot of different genres, which was fun. you didn't know if you were gonna get RHCP or bossanova or some clint eastwood type western picking. didn't save any songs but overall pretty enjoyable
Well this is an album. I'm just not really sure who it's for. Nothing great to note and nothing awful to note. Bang average. 5/10 (2.5/5)
Really unique sound, experimental but pleasant to the ears (definitely not for everyone).
Sometimes I thought I was really enjoying it and other times I was like eh. Overall just seemed to be wishy washy
I like Beck; I've got a couple of his records but not this one. It's okay, seems like more of the same kind of stuff. Nothing particularly stands out and, once again, I'm wondering why it's on this list.
Tried listening to this a few times over the extended review period and idk, it's just fine??? I don't really have anything witty to say for this one, it's just a little collection of various styles of alt-rock, each track was pretty unique I suppose The first half of this album made me feel like I was listening to the licensed soundtrack to an EA Sports title from 2004-2007
yet another case of 'this artist has done better releases before' but i looked it up and odelay is actually on the list so i'll live with it for now. mellow gold released after the book was made so he gets a pass for that one too. my biggest problem with this album really is that i'd just rather listen to the other two. guero sounds like an attempt to recapture the lightning in a bottle that made odelay, which never goes well. i looked it up because i felt this was the case and his releases after odelay, while financially successful, had been received to more mild and at times poorer reception to odelay. apparently guero had been an attempt at a 'return to form' and technically i'd say it was success. guero is like a calculated, formulaic recreation of odelay. E-Pro in particular is very very similar to the opening track on odelay, Devil's Haircut. aside from that there's some influences from the brief depressive string-y stint he went on during sea change, like missing, broken drum and blue jay way. the biggest problem with this album is that the attempts to recreate odelay are mostly the weakest parts of the album, and make up it's bulk. part of the magic of odelay was the rawness of the album, and the revitalisation it brought to all the genres it mashed together. it really was the brainchild of a fan of several highly influential genres that had the musical chops to blend them together and make something not only new but also really fucking good, and something like that can't be recreated perfectly on purpose. his heart just didn't feel in it this time, in comparison to on odelay. the songs where he tries something new, poppy and upbeat like girl and que onda guero are very good and clearly he still had some new tricks up his sleeve, many of which would come to fruition on later releases. apparently he had 35 new tracks on tapes he recorded during a tour which he lost, so he went back to some unfinished tracks that dated back to when he was writing the tracks for odelay, which makes a lot of sense. ultimately this is a good, listenable album. i just don't think it's beck's best, and i can't listen to it without thinking of his best.
This album is insanely similar to the work of Gotye outside of his hits. It made me realise Gotye is a massive fucking hack since his entire non-mainstream music career is just a rip-off of this album.. I'm not mad though. Gotye improved upon it massively. This album to me is good but feels incomplete. It's trying to do so much with Sampledelia and achieves none of the punch or impact Gotye would a achieve a few years later. Most of the tracks on this album are good, very few are great. Broken Drum and Scarecrow are massive highlights for me. Sad pop Beck never fails for me. Love it. 7/10 Fav tracks - Que' Onda Guero, Girl, Missing, Black Tamorine, Earthquake Weather, Hell Yes, Broken Drum, Scarecrow, Farewell Ride, Rental Car, Emergency Exit, Send a Message to Her Least Fav - Go it Alone
I can't hear burger king crown and not think of that one guy on the flight, fun album no real notes it was a good listen but I would not go out of my way to listen to it. To make up the word count here is a summary of the Rwandan Genocide for no reason: On 6 April 1994, the deaths of the Presidents of Burundi and Rwanda in a plane crash caused by a rocket attack, ignited several weeks of intense and systematic massacres. The killings - more than one million people are estimated to have perished - shocked the international community and were clearly acts of genocide. An estimated 150,000 to 250,000 women were also raped. Members of the presidential guard started killing Tutsi civilians in a section of Kigali near the airport. Less than half an hour after the plane crash, roadblocks manned by Hutu militiamen often assisted by gendarmerie (paramilitary police) or military personnel were set up to identify Tutsis. 7 April On 7 April, Radio Television Libres Des Mille Collines (RTLM) aired a broadcast attributing the plane crash to the RPF and a contingent of UN soldiers, as well as incitements to eliminate the "Tutsi cockroach". Later that day the Prime Minister, Agathe Uwilingiyimana and 10 Belgian peacekeepers assigned to protect her were brutally murdered by Rwandan government soldiers in an attack on her home. Other moderate Hutu leaders were similarly assassinated. After the massacre of its troops, Belgium withdrew the rest of its force. 21 April On 21 April, after other countries asked to withdraw troops, the UNAMIR force reduced from an initial 2,165 to 270. If the absence of a resolute commitment to reconciliation by some of the Rwandan parties was one problem, the tragedy was compounded by the faltering response of the international community. The capacity of the United Nations to reduce human suffering in Rwanda was severely constrained by the unwillingness of Member States to respond to the changed circumstances in Rwanda by strengthening UNAMIR’s mandate and contributing additional troops. 22 June On June 22, the Security Council authorized French-led forces to mount a humanitarian mission. The mission, called Operation Turquoise, saved hundreds of civilians in South West Rwanda, but is also said to have allowed soldiers, officials and militiamen involved in the genocide to flee Rwanda through the areas under their control. In other areas, killings continued until 4 July 1994 when the RPF took military control of the entire territory of Rwanda.
A weird combination of early Gorillaz with Chris Cornell vocal. Unfortunately for me, Beck is like a bit worse version of them. Quite mundane album, but funky tunes slightly elevate the record and try to make it interesting. No two songs are alike. But also most of them are not to my liking.
This album is full of nostalgia. Takes me back to a certain time in life. I really like Beck, but still don't LOVE this whole album. Solid, catchy, memorable, not my favorite.
3.5/5
Didn’t realise these guys did Loser. Actually more like didn’t realise these guy did anything other than that. Was a fine album, infant was nonchalant. 3/5
Not bad.
Beck is so prolific and a solid musician, but not someone who comes to mind when choosing what to play. This is a good album, but he does have better ones.
Bueno
Creative? Sure, but it doesn't make me feel anything. Each song is loaded with random sounds that seem to weigh the message down. At the core, there's usually a good groove, but the blank verses are throwing that off as well. On the whole, I'm not sorry for having never gone to a Beck concert.
Not a bad album but I'm not a huge beck fan. Whole album sounded similar. 3 stars
I can appreciate the experimentation that Beck employs, but I just don't really enjoy the music to a high degree. Points for his technical skills, but he doesn't really pass the ear test for me personally.
Beck and his many noises. Always happy to listen to him but will never search him out. Good early morning album. Broken Drum was probably my favorite on the album. Goes in the high 3 range, can't quite give it a 4.
Two Beck albums in ten days? Oh Wowzers, what have I done to deserve this? Anyway, it’s another perfectly pleasant listen (just like Odelay) but nothing special (just like Odelay).
Go back to when he was good
betra en mig minnti. 3,5.
Nice enough
I've always had a big of a tough time with Beck. Theoretically, he falls right in my wheelhouse, but his music often leaves me cold. It doesn't help that this album kicks off with "E-Pro", a song whose repetitiveness annoyed the hell out of me when featured in the video game Rock Band 2. That said, there's a lot of fun material here too. And I can't deny that he's an interesting writer, bouncing between styles while remaining cohesive. This is probably a 3.5 starrer in my eyes, but screw it, I'm rounding down.
Fun, innovative, and a ton of hits. Wouldn't mind hearing this at any time.
Pretty good stuff. Not as off-the-charts weird as his earlier stuff, but still quite enjoyable.
Yet another Beck album on the list, which is deserving, but I've lost count of how many I've reviewed already. Similar to the others, this record is very good with many strong tracks and overall worth the listen. To me though, there aren't any standout tracks that make me feel it's better than some of the others on the list. This might be my least favourite Beck album so far, but it's still better than most of the records here.
Its not a bad album at all, I quite enjoyed it.But I will need a relisten in a few weeks because this seems as one of those albums you think is ok the first listen but it grows in you massively.
On hyvä.
I enjoyed the first song, the rest were meh. Wouldn't listen again, but not unpleasant. Chain reaction sucked.
Like with "Sea Change," I understand why mid-career Beck is so acclaimed. I get why it's so acclaimed. I just can't seem to get into it though. I think it's a big mood thing, though. More so with "Sea Change," but even with "Guero" I think it would help to listen to it when I just happened to be in the right frame of mind. That's another interesting thing I've found with the 1001 experiment - a good rainy day wallowing album on a sunny day is gonna hit different, a fun boppy rocker when you're sad might not do it for you. It seems I never reviewed "Odelay," but rather than delay this review further I'm gonna boldly say it's the Beck album most deserving of being on the list. (Even though it was overplayed and some of it is annoying.)
Not his best album
I thought "Beck" was just Jeff being lazy, but I guess not. It's not terrible but I'm not desperate to listen again.
Very middle of the road, interesting change of style here and there, but ultimately nothing really stuck.
This one has several great songs, but Odelay always reigns supreme for me
not bad, but not balanced
Álbum instigante, mas não me marcou muito. "Go It Alone" a melhor faixa do álbum.
1st time hearing the album, over all not bad. There are some good tunes, but probably not enough for me to come back for another listen.
Cool art, I wouldn’t listen to it on my own
There are some catchy tunes, but this isn't an album I'd be eager to listen to again.
I don't listen to enough Beck, but I enjoyed listening to this.
Passeli albumi, pitää vielä uudemmat kerrat kuunnella.
This is probably Beck’s most fun album. His earliest albums like Mellow Gold and Odelay are great but don’t get the blood pumping like Guero does. Most of Beck’s other great albums like Mutations, Sea Change, and Morning Phase are all softer and more folkish. And Midnite Vultures… well I guess I forgot about that one because it’s funky as hell and probably more fun than Guero actually. But Guero’s still a great album with some of my favorite songs of Beck’s like “Girl”.
Não conhecia e até que gostei
Interesting, but not my jam.
Sea Change is arguably one of my biggest pleasant surprises on here, but the brief bit of Beck I checked out at the time was disappointing, and this album continues that. He was great at singing about heartbreak, this album just seems a bit all over the place and a bit random. Some genres he's alright at, some others I'm questioning the need for. Average.
Pretty different from the last Beck album. There were some interesting songs but a lot were kind of boring.
Enjoyable listen so far, I liked the opening song the best
Beck is cool and I really like some of those basslines. On the other hand, I liked this album but I didn’t find it anything special. Listens: 2 Fave Track: E-pro Rating: 3
Previously rated: Odelay (3/5) Sea Change (2/5) ********************** There is some decent stuff here (E-Pro, Que Onda Guero, Girl, Scarecrow) and some boring stuff (Earthquake Weather, and the last few tracks). He still has that monotone quality to his voice, so I'll probably never get excited to hear this or another Beck album, but it's alright.
Some decent songs but nothing amazing
Rock alternativo. Ni fu ni fa.
Good music, nonsense lyrics are a bit hard for me to get on board with
Not a huge fan of Beck, I find them a bit pretentious and boring, but this was listenable.
hmmm schnarch
Is's a little cheesy, but I still like it.
Earthquake Weather is a truly great song, as are a few others on here. I prefer Seachange vibes and production, but I enjoyed listening to this a lot.
The song with the half Spanish lyric is great and otherwise it's kind of meh
This album kinda confused me a bit. I kept going back and forth on whether I liked it or not. I would hate two songs and then the next song would be an absolute banger. It’s a good album but I honestly don’t really see myself returning to much of it.
Not my fav beck album but dang good
I've loved the hits off this album for a while now, but this was my first time listening to the whole thing. Unfortunately, I don't think there's much value here outside of the hits I already liked.
For me nothing more than a 3.
I feel like this album for me is in the fine line between sort of catchy and terribly boring. It kept getting my interest and losing it all the time. I think overall was good tho
Second song is great! Overall a bit weird and maybe too much going on?
6/10 liked the beat
I like Beck.
It's beck. Cool sound
Yeah, it was alright. Opens strong and then....it's all a bit too similar and lacking in oomph
Not bad, very uppidy but all sound very similar
A bunch of very catchy songs that always opened unpromisingly but worked out by the end. It seemed too long though, each song could be cut by 30 seconds and nothing would be missed. Stand-out: Earthquake Weather
It was a little peculiar. Some of the songs lacked direction, and tended to feel meaningless. I quite enjoyed a couple selections, they had nice form and had some direction. I appreciated the technical musical decisions in many of them, despite it not quite turning out perfect every time.
Beck's not really my thing. A couple of songs are kind of catchy but I wouldn't be sad if I never got to hear them again.
Odelay? But Ok
I can take or leave Beck at any given moment. This is a take.
I could never figure out what a sub eyed girl was. Didn't know the lyric controversy until today. Maybe I should try playing it backwards and see what it says?😉 This is a fun album to listen to, but for me lacks four star status. A great 3.44 though.
Was a little surprised to see this on the list. While it’s a solid album, and I actually forgot how many good songs are on this, it’s probably not even a top 3 Beck album. E-Pro is a jam and the run from Girl to Earthquake Weather is one of the best of the early 00s. There are a few other good songs, but overall this is just a bit better than decent.
I enjoyed it. Nothing groundbreaking for me personally but some nice tunes.
Features heavily on my go-to Pandora chill station.
It was pretty interesting, not a huge fan so some of it was not good sounding to me personally..
Nice chill album. Would listen again but not extremely jazzed about it based on a single listen.
Good background music but kind of meh for me. Like I could vibe to it but I’m probably not going to be putting it on while I’m driving.
I’d give it a 3.5. quite enjoyed several songs, but didn’t *love* it overall
Not for ne
Not his best work
I thought this was ok. I thought I would like it more.
Третий альбом Бека? За сто с чем-то альбомов? Ну я не то что бы против, но мне трудно понять, как лист вроде этого может не включать In The Aeroplane Over The Sea, но при этом содержит, видимо, всю /s дискографию Бека. В любом случае: я предпочту его эксперименты и какое-то движение одинаковому кантри и устаревшему блюзу. Лучшая песня - Go It Alone.
I generally like Beck. None of these songs are ones I’d come back to, but the vibe is good. I wouldn’t mind hearing it again.
A strange inconsistent album with a variety of musical styles. I had high hopes with the opening track "E-Pro" which was a solid alt-rock track, but then it descended into the realms of hip-hop with the second track "Qué Onda Guero". After this the album settles down into blend of pop-rock.
I liked it. Favourite track: Que' Onda Guero
Woo, the album I know from Beck. Brings back early 2005 memories
3.5
Kind of whatever
Beck is such an unique artist, though i didnt enjoy this album as much as some others of his
Good album but Beck has better.
Its all there, its wonderful, virtuoso, tricks, ear candy sounds and playful moments, with polish and genius... and yet, AND YET, as the whole, the 'gestalt' mysteriously doesnt touch my soul. I CANT EXPLAIN IT even if I want it to... instead it just 'klangs' in ym head. And its not just this Beck album, I have bought them and not understood why I cant listen to him. Proof that attraction does not equal compatibility. Intellectually I get it, but by senses reject it. Beck is impressive, but never organically "worked" for me to touched me. I am left with a jarring emptiness. I just cant "listen" to it. SO, as my ratings are weighted towards my personal enjoyment, (more so than the points awarded to quality mastery and specialness or originality): Enjoyment: 1-2 Quality/mastery/specialness: 4-5 Overall: 3
Odelay Part 2. Fun, but inessential. E-Pro and Girl are catchy tunes. You know, this kinda reminds me of the later albums of the Black Keys, after they hooked up with Modest Mouse. Suddenly, they are doing all kinds of radio-friendly production and, despite the surface trappings of a plucky lo-fi alternative record with that Gritty Authenticity(tm) and Bonus Quirk, this is _actually_ a highly refined studio confection, work-shopped, buffed and refined as much as any Britney Spears record, and probably with a not dissimilar budget. Even the appearance of Jack White, Money Mark and Petra Hayden don't really add much interest. Did you see how many engineer and studio assistant credits are on this record? It has a credit for a Sound Designer, for god's sake. It makes me nostalgic for the days of Mellow Gold, where Beck was throwing stuff together in a friend's house with a cheap sampler and some hand-me-down instruments... It's not a bad record, but it doesn't really have anything super interesting to say. I guess you could dance to it, if you wanted, and there a few hummable tunes. 2.5 stars. I note that this album has been expunged from the most recent edition of 1001 Albums.
Great stuff, all over the musical spectrum. 7/10
I like Beck a lot, but had a hard time getting into this one. Still solid though. Will probably listen again, but not in a hurry.
Shades of early Gorillaz, not that it’s a bad thing
Rock alternativo. Ni fu ni fa.
This is when Beck starts to lose me. Typical forgettable pop record from an artist that is rarely either. Good record. Not a good Beck record.
E-Pro is a lot of fun but this is a little bit Beck by numbers (those numbers are still pretty damn good!)
Maybe I like Beck? Some good songs with interesting genre variation and some decent "rapping."
I think I may have actually purchased this CD back in the day. Maybe the last CD I ever bought.... E-Pro is a banger.
forgot bow weird and fun this was could i write poetry to this? n
I love Beck pretty across the board. Hell, I even have a copy of his experimental noise record, "Stereopathetic Soulmanure," around here somewhere. There are a few really good songs here, but this isn't even in his top-five best records. "E-Pro" is the obvious hit song, but was overused as production music in too many car commercials and sports broadcasts.
This album sounds like an attempt to recreate Odelay, but not quite hitting the mark. 2.5 stars
Have tried to get into this a few times before but lose interest after the first track. Girl is pretty nice as well. Big fan of Odelay, and Midnite Vultures when they came out, then floated away from Beck and after hearing he'd released a load of new albums that were good I tried. None of them really landed for me though, and this is one of those. It's probably the closest successor to Odelay in that it has a similar ragtaggle style in a lot of songs, but the level of tunes is just nothing like the same aside from one or two. Stuff like Hell Yes can get in the bin. Pleased that the song he wrote for Elliott Smith, Broken Drum was a clear standout. Lovely. It's another half decent indie guitar album, with some stylings. Not really an essential addition.
Thoughts before listening: Now this is a mid-00s album that I actually enjoy although I might not agree its deserving of this list. To me, Beck peaked just before this album with Mellow Gold, Odelay, and Sea Change, but I did own Guero on cd at the time. I have not however listened in a long time, so I am glad to have a reason to revisit this album. Review: This is good, but I still agree that it doesn't rise to the heights of Beck's earlier albums. There are some good hits here like "E-Pro" and "Girl", and I really like "Black Tambourine" and "Hell Yes" as well. However, there is a lot of filler on this album, with most of the highlights being on the first half and the album losing steam in the second half. 3-stars.
E-Pro, Girl, Go It Alone 4/5 Rest of album 2/5
Not Beck at his best, but not at his worst either. A few stand out tracks like the Rock Band video game banger "E-Pro" (that glomps on Beastie Boys "So What'cha Want") makes it rise above plenty of other releases, but we're far from peak Beck here, but thats ok.
Definitely a solid album start to finish. Worthy of 4 stars but still have to give it 3.
This album was kinda weird but I did Like it mostly. Very interesting ngl. He speaks instead of Sings imo though.
Good, joyful, light, Beck album. Last few sings tailed off a bit.
Some weeks ago I got the Sea Change album, which I liked a lot, so I was looking forward to listening to another Beck album. And the first track was a good and upbeat song, so I stayed positive. However, there were not much else to enjoy. By no means is it a bad album, it’s just not very good. It’s inoffensive background music you can bob your head to, but nothing I will go out of my way to listen to, except for the aforementioned E-Pro and Earthquake Weather, Girl and Go it Alone. A solid 3-star rating, but still a 3-star rating
I have never been into Beck but he’s growing on me.
Saw Beck live, two tall guys standing front row center, arms crossed blocking the view of everyone behind them. They stood arms crossed, not moving for almost the entire show, then E-Pro came on and they turned to face each other, double high-fived and starting dancing. Once the song was over they moved to the back of the crowd. Much like that show, this album is entertaining and slightly strange.
Beck has an interesting sound. I like it in smaller doses than an entire album.
All of Beck sounds so similar to me. It's perfectly fine but nothing that's gonna excite me too much. 3.5
Should listen again, might be a 4
Go it alone was pretty good. The rest of the album was entirely forgettable
Barely knew Beck aside from appearances on SNL which did not overly impress. This was a good album. I will listen to more.
3/5
Mediocre easy listening. Nothing too demanding musically.
Started strong but fizzled out. I enjoyed the mix of pastiche and foreward thinking music.
Delightfully average. Throw this on and you'll have on alright time.
I thought it was on. Not a fan of Beck singing though.
Solid, easy to listen to album.
Had some moments but mostly felt like background music
Beck, another artist I’ve grown to respect more during this journey. This one though wasn’t a standout for me.
Better than I expected and there are some listenable songs on here. Not sure I really want to listen to them again though.
Fun intro to beck
Ok
I should probably listen this more times to really get into it
Not for me
knew all the hits, but the deeper cuts were pretty solid. wish (again) i could give half stars.
Favorite Tracks: E-Pro Farewell Ride
I'm not a huge fan of Beck songs when they come on individually, but somehow the album concept works better for me. (Maybe this is why we should listen to more albums.) Really enjoyed the first half.
Not my favorite but not terrible.
Typical Beck with random sounds and lyrics. First song was good, rest of album was entertaining but not memorable.
Eclectic mix of hip hop, slide guitar and perhaps some South American rhythm. Interesting to listen to.
It wasn’t bad, but poor layering on some tracks left me wanting more. Some standouts were Broken Drum and Epro
Probably my favorite Beck album I have gotten from the list so far. I still don't quite love the album but it was a pretty good listen.
This one's alright. I don't really know if it needs to be on here since there are apparently other, better Beck albums. On top of that, I don't really know if Beck has had enough of a cultural impact to warrant having 3 albums on here, but sure, I guess. This album isn't bad though. I like the overall sound. The instrumentals are nice. I'm not the biggest fan of Beck's vocals, but they aren't particularly bad or anything. The writing is unique. I guess that's kind of to be expected from the guy whose most popular song starts with the line "In the time of chimpanzees, I was a monkey." That song isn't on this album by the way, or any of the albums of his that are on this list. That's weird, but okay. What stands out to me for this album is the variety in both writing and sound. Some songs are very clearly in the alternative rock field that Beck established himself to be a part of, while others are almost hip-hop like in a way. The writing is also about a variety of things, although many tie into similar themes. Overall, a decent album with some pretty positive aspects. 3/5.
E-Pro is another solid Beck album opener. That dude knows how to kick off an album, I'll tell you what
Funky. 3.5
Every Beck album I listen to I like for 15 mins then I'm done with it. He embodies the too cool for school attitude of the early 00's. Nice sound just can never keep concentration throughout
I've never listened to Beck and didn't know what to expect. It started poorly for me: I really didn't like E-Pro. I found it easier to listen to Que Onda Guero. Most of the rest was not interesting to me. I did like most of Broken Drum and kind of got into the rhythm of Go It Alone. The final track (Emergency Exit) was my favorite on the album.
Beck is cool, I like Beck. I will not intentionally listen to Beck so there is that.
Pisti päätä nyökkymään. Aika hiphopmaista. Vähän kuin nu-rockia. Rentoa. Parhaat: Que Onda Guero, Hell Yes, Rental Car
a couple pretty groovy songs, i liked Go It Alone and Que honda guero. other tracks were hit or miss for me, cool instrumentation tho, very creative
Very trancy, interesting sound, unique
I liked.
Good but by no means anywhere near Becks best.
Weird rock but easy to listen. There is a nuce acoustic ballad in here. E-pro.
It’s got some solid songs, but, overall, just kind of an average album.
I wasn’t impressed. Just like the other Beck album I’ve heard, it’s all just pretty average. It’s good, but nothing special at all. 6/10 Top 3: 1. E-Pro 2. Missing 3. Farewell Ride
Not my cup of tea. A few good tracks, but overall not mynfsvorite
This was an ok album.
Fun, and not terrible, but nothing really struck me about it. Maybe Beck's just not my thing.
Well-known recipe of 'Odelay-Beck' with lots of variation and hints of hip-hop, country, folk and electronica. Again cleverly woven together, but not very surprising.
Beck weiß was er macht - aber das Album nimmt mich nicht mit.
E-Pro is an energetic opener, nice crunchy guitar sound. Switches gears quickly into breezy rap-rock on track 2, with electronic and world music stylings. Girl starts with bleeps and bloops before breaking into alt rock. Continues to defy genre expectations or easy categorization as the record progresses, winding through folk/country with Emergency Exit. At the very least this is interesting.
mezcla rara entre nirvana y los red hots
Alternative styles with catchy riffs.
It’s alright like beck isn’t really for me to be completely honest but I don’t hate it either. 3/5
My wife loves Beck. And I have grown to as well. Every time I listen to him, I think that I should listen to him more often; but I don't. I liked this album. It sort of all blended together. I'd listen to it again, but I think the songs are better for like Mix Tapes.
Better than Sea Change
Música alternativa bastante entretenida. Al principio me gustaba bastante, pero al final me ha dado vibes de estar oyendo lo mismo todo el rato por eso le falta ese plus.
Not the best Beck album but there's enough good material to make it a decent listen. I may need to revisit it in the future as it has a chance to grow on me. No denying Beck's creativity but this one falls slightly short compared to previous efforts.
This is like almost every other indie / alternative artist’s album of this music generation / genre.
a cacophony of same-y folk beats with like four absolute stars. hard to rate Favorite Tracks - Girl
It's fun but it doesn't really go anywhere in my opinion.
i'm conflicted because on the one hand, a 2000s album on this list is a rare gift, and i do like some of beck's music. and i appreciate that he's got a kitchen-sink style approach to his songs. but a lot of these songs were repetitive and annoying to me, so 3 stars it is!
it was fine. there are some good tracks here but boy is there a lot of filler. i know beck is capable of writing some absolute bangers, but most of the time he just decides not to? i don't even think it's a case of me not "getting it," i think he's just experimenting and it falls flat into something that's not very interesting. maybe I'm just not a beck fan. favorite: e-pro, girl, black tambourine, earthquake weather
I’m surprised how much I enjoyed this record. I’ve largely avoided Beck, I’ve thought his music not to be particularly interesting and I saw him live once but left unamused. Yet, I fondly recognized two tracks from this album (E-Pro and Girl) which I didn’t even realize were Beck songs. My thoughts on him have changed a bit; maybe I’ll explore more.
It's fine. I think the songs are interesting but they just don't hold my attention the whole way through.
Aphex Twin's influence on electronic music is such that anyone just picking up this record today in 2023 might not realize how special this album really was in 1992, because everything today sounds like this album. But it sounds that way because Aphex Twin showed the way to getting to this sound. It is not an exaggeration to say that after Kraftwerk, that one of the next huge leaps forward was Aphex Twin.
3/5 Groovy rock and hip hop, very Gorillaz-y, hence kind of generic because of this. Not my favorite from Beck personally
It's a fun one, some bangers, some wankers
The first half was pretty funky and creative. The second half was basic Beck stuff, which is fine if you’re into that kind of thing.
Not bad as background music. Bored me after a while, since every song sounds the same and nothing stands out.
Pretty decent 3.5/4
Music was not bad, but it felt a bit incoherent
Feel like it's good music but it doesn't quite speak to me.
I'd previously never really listened to Beck, and it is interesting and good, but not really my style. I didn't finish the album.
Enjoyed this.
A solid Beck album with some fun groovy tunes but nothing that sticks in the memory too much - he has quite a few stronger projects in my opinion
I had decided that I didn't like Beck without ever listening to any of the music, and now, after having listened to an album, I can confidently say that I still don't really like Beck...But also, I don't necessarily dislike Beck either.
It was alright. They talked more than anything. Vibe was okay.
This is one of those weird albums where the performer making it knows they can do whatever they want and they have their demand.
One absolute temazo, couple of catchy tunes. The rest a little hmmm.
It’s not bad. A couple of decent songs but the album isn’t one I’d be rushing to listen to again.
Ok... couple good hits!
Another enjoyable album! Not a huge Beck fan, but this is the closest I have come. There were a few keepers in here towards the end that I liked, Go It Alone and Rental Car.
One of the weaker Beck albums I've heard. The artistry is great as usual, but to me this one lacks focus. Lots of quirky attempts in different directions, and I applaud them, but it doesn't add up to very much. Definitely liked a few songs, but we've had multiple better Beck albums on the list so I'd axe this one. Favorite tracks: E-Pro, Girl, Scarecrow, Rental Car. Album art: Kind of cool picture here, some freaky drawings of a weird guy at a desk, sitting on his own head, whatever else is going on. I like the art style, I don't love that the title is positioned like a sticker covering one of the heads of the guys, disruptive in a way I don't enjoy. But overall, cool. 3/5
This is almost a 4. There are a lot of songs on here that sound pretty ahead of their time, like a proto-Tame Impala or Thundercat (especially Earthquake Weather)
There are a bunch of good songs on here but a bunch of real snoozers as well. As much as I want to give it a 4 I just don't think this is Beck's best
Go it alone - the single I’ve never heard but liked.
Odd funky album.
This was good but I dont think I would ever seek out this album. Love me some Beck though
A little too off the wall for my taste but enjoyed it nonetheless
Different.
I like "Broken Drum". It's a solid album.
A couple fun songs
Mid era Beck which has some echoes of a (slightly more sophisticated) Odelay jumping from genre to genre. Decent.
Didn't get all the way through, but will finish it as soon as possible. I dug the hip-hop style vocals with the twangy guitars.
The genre blending of this is rather interesting, and some of the songs are good in the context of its genre. It is not really a thing I gravitate towards, but I do understand why its in this book.
The singles at the front end are all pretty fun, but it loses steam as it continues.
Average: Nothing outstanding here, it sounds a lot like Beck and it is Beck. Good guitar beats and I am really wondering why there are so many of their albums on this list. Average modern rock.
Sprechgesabg auf Gitarrenrock
Pretty fine baby
30/100 Based on this scale: 1 star - 0 to 19 2 stars - 20 to 39 3 stars - 40 to 59 4 stars - 60 to 79 5 stars - 80 to 100 This album sits somewhere between "ok" and "just there" for me. It has moments, but I don't think I'll ever listen to it again on purpose.
Known before: Artist Standouts: Earthquake Weather 5/10
Known Before: Standouts: 3. Girl 6.0
A little bit of everything. Well recorded, well written/composed and well mixed, but just reminds me why I just didn't need more Beck at some point.
I'm not sure what it is about Beck but every single album i've heard from him is just...ok. I don't mind it while it's on, but after it's done there's never a single song I want to repeat, no urge to check out his other stuff or anything. It just kind of happens and that's it.
3.4 - I feel like have the potential to be a big Beck fan, but I don’t think I like him much as a person and don’t connect with the music. I thought it was quite similar to the eels too. Maybe I’d need to see him live
When I was 13 years old I heard Girl by Beck on the radio and became obsessed with it. I don't know why, such a simple tune, but I was hooked, bought this album and played the track on repeat. E-Pro is a banger. I would presume Beck's most bangliest banger. I always liked Que Onda Guero. I think it holds up pretty well. I really still love Girl. So far this album is a lot better than I thought it would be. Missing, I don't recall this track, but I like it too. Black Tambourine is the first miss for me, but I like Earthquake Weather. Hell Yes is corny, I don't like when Beck does the robot futurist thing. Broken Drum and Scarecrow are both fine but not doing much for me. Go It Alone and Last Farewell Ride are both quite enjoyable, but by this point in the album lots of tracks are suffering from being a bit too long and too repetitive. You could cram these two tracks together and make one more compelling listen. I actually love that Chiribim Chiribom sample in Rental Car - that's maybe the most surprising moment in the album. Emergency Car is bland, Send a Message to Her is just knock-off Devil's Haircut. Chain Reaction is annoying, why bother we such a closer. I like a lot of the tracks and elements here, but this album kinda wears me down with how repetitive it can be, and how many repetitions of similar themes there are. It feels in many ways less than the sum of its parts, which is a shame. Beck is a really creative songwriter, but perhaps not a great album curator. Fave Tracks: E-Pro, Que Onda Guero, Girl, Earthquake Weather, Go It Alone, Rental Car 3.4/5
OK, though Beck has never been on my favorite list
Well, I wasn't psyched to get another Beck album so close on the heels of the last one, but I liked this record better than Odelay. That said, I suppose I just have a negative predilection (not sure that's a thing) toward the dude. I kept harping on things not to like. So that's on me. Lots of cool musical and melodic passages, this one didn't sound so much like a time capsule, but I just don't jive with the guy any more. Would have gotten a 3.5 if that were an option, but it ain't getting the Christmas bump. Sorry Charlie.
I struggled to have strong feelings about this one. Seems like an easy album to cull from the list. There's nothing goundbreaking or particularly interesting happening here. At the same time, I didn't object to anything either. Girl is a good tune. Overall: meh.
Not sure if it's because we just listened to Beck's best album recently or if I just had bad timing with Guero. I wasn't moved but it is Beck and I like his vibe.
Rock alternativo. Bastante ecléctico.
The more interesting sample-driven faster songs were a highlight and I grew tired of some of the slower, softer songs, except Broken Drum and Go It Alone. The majority of songs felt distinct and unique, but other than energy/tempo differences I couldn’t explain why I liked some but not others. The rhythms were very often fun and catchy but what was built on top of it didn’t always resonate with me fully, but was usually catchy nonetheless. Reminded me of fellow LA artist Calexico from a couple months ago, and both of them grew on me stronger as I progressed through the albums. 6.5/10
Alternative rock, Indie rock, Country music, Alternative hip hop, Alternative country, Sampledelia
All I can think of is the rhyming Becktionary from Futurama.
Almost 4/5 but dragged a bit
3 stars
Few cool tracks but you can probably die peacefully without listening to this one.
3.5
Really enjoyed this album. Low-level grooves suit my mood sometimes.
Mostly low key odelay with some gentle mellow gold ie slide geetar. Less interesting rapping and droney singing. Fine but nit as memorable as first two. Becks liked
It's pretty standard Beck; most of the songs sound the same. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it isn't notable, either.
I want to like Beck’s music but it’s just so meh to me. 6/10
året er 2005 jeg er ti år matrix og edgy ting er kult ræpping er fett trommer er gøy Men som 28-åring er ikke mid-2000s cool guy converse, shades og skinny jeans indie viben like kul
#59. Beck was still making music in 2005? This first two songs were quite good. The rest of the album was good too, but the first two were gooder. 3/5: acceptable
I had a complete dissertation on how seeing Beck live in concert at an outdoor venue was easily one of the 3 or 4 greatest concerts of my young life along with how I've finally discovered how to eat popcorn with a little mother fucking purpose and it all made sense somehow but then the dog ate my homework. The whole blessed thing got erased and I realized it doesn't matter anyway because that concert Beck put on was goddamn extraordinary unlike this album, which is half hearted by Beck's standards.
Good to put on and let fade into the background - until you start singing along at random intervals. Brought me back to the mid-aughts.
3-4
Ok funky ok.
It’s pretty good background music Enjoyable though
Solid Beck album, revisiting to some extent the pick n mix magic of Odelay with another album that shows what a good songwriter he is, as well as sonic artist.
Between alternative Hip Hop and Rock IT fails Go bei exceptional.
2005 Alternative rock, Indie rock, Country music, Alternative hip hop, Alternative country, Sampledelia Unique sound & cultural adventure experience 7/10 listen again 22/10/23
I expected too much.
6/10
Started to trail off in the second half but it’s was better than I expected. Shame he’s a Scientologist
Preferred the first half. It's good. Goes a bit weird on some tracks but not to shabby well done beck
I always think his albums will be too strange, and they usually are not. They always manage to straddle the line. I liked this one. 3.5/5 Would listen again
Eclectic, bold and cool, but I'm not drawn to want to listen to this again. Rating: 3/5 Playlist track: E-Pro Date listened: 17/11/23
It wasn’t a bad album. It was just okay. I can see what Beck was trying to accomplish with this album but it ended up falling short.
3 of 5
Beck is so eclectic. This a great example of that. Good songs trough out but some don’t make a lasting impression. 3 stars
I don't mind Beck when he's carving out his own mumbly piece of the "spoken word rock" corner. The sound collage usually works for me, he's good at textures and rhythms. The closer he steps toward hip hop, the less I like it and the less convincing it is. "Hell Yes" was the worst track on the album for me. Didn't hate it overall but wouldn't seek it out.
Solid, but not nearly as good as 2005 Mason thought it was
I remember the singles off this album but I don't think I ever listened to the whole thing. I liked Girl back then and I like it now. There was another song I liked and a couple I disliked, but I was listening while driving so don't recall. It's fine.
Okay. Samey
Like the other Beck album I've gotten, this was kinda long and trails off in the second half. Pretty middle of the road.
No idea what to expect from name/album/artist. Described as Alternative genre. Beck is known for experimental/lo-fi style with a wide-ranging discography. I like lo-fi/experimental so will see how it goes… It’s alright straight off the bat - some nice electric guitar and pretty upbeat. Stuck between 3/4 at the moment, not sure if it’s library worthy yet. Going with 3.
Quite funky, energetic, may be rather popular in friends groups (I guess?). But I get tired of most of the Alternative music somehow. Something about the repetitiveness of the rhythm guitar that gets on my head. At the same time, a lot of audio time is rhythm guitar-free, and are also the most enjoyable.
Wasn't bad, but not really something I'd go listen to on my own.
Good singles in E-Pro, Girl, and Hell Yes, but the deeper cuts don't do much for me. I appreciate the consistent sound throughout and most of the songs start out pretty cool, but so much of this album is repetitive to a fault, I get tired of nearly every song here by the time it's half over.
Meh. Pretty unremarkable.
Takes me back, but not an album I remember specifically.
The first half is quite an eclectic blend of rock and hip hop which fits in with the 2000s sound, yet unmistakably Beck. The second half seems a bit samey and drifts into the background.
