Favorites: E-Pro Girl Earthquake Weather Broken Drum Go It Alone Farewell Ride Send A Message To Her Genre-bending.

Yeah alright

its good album for doing stuffs like reading or housework but i really wont prefer it when i want to listen music

Repeat listen

Indie/garage rock? Hip hop elements in Que Onda Guero Electro in Girl, so very eclectic! Country elsewhere too, with slide guitar like in Farewell Ride This sound (bouncy garage with semi-spoken lyrics) does get tiring quickly. Doesnt seem so special for the year either? Best track - Que Onda Guero, Hell Yes, Scarecrow, Rental Car 3 stars

Det er rocket, groovy og anderledes, men ikke noget jeg kommer til at lytte meget til. Dog var det et friskt pust af en slags rock jeg ikke havde hørt før.

How in the hell is the Beck album on this list NOT Sea Change?

The production was creative and kept me engaged The first half was strong (E-Pro and Qué Onda Guero stood out), but the album felt repetitive in the second half Didn’t feel any of the tracks were bad but also didn’t feel like any of them were very strong Favorites (A.K.A. Songs I added): None

Some nice songs that I have no desire to listen to again

Surprisingly I liked the album for the most part. Might at some songs to my playlist.

Beck is weird

A bit good

Yeah was'nt a bad album and I quite like Beck

He never did quite manage to reach those Odelay heights again, did he?

Need to listen more to this

Interesting. I haven’t heard anything from this one I don’t believe, but I’ve been known to not skip Beck songs when they come shuffling into the endless expanse of audio stimulation I require. I am like a startled prey animal, desperately seeking some sort of comfort from the terrors perceived by my advanced fear response. I believe they call that GAD in humans. Enough rambling. Will this album be a “Loser,” or will Beck give ‘em heck. I hate myself. E-Pro - I am a professional Farming Simulator E sports competitor, I am a professional Farming Simulator E sports compet… oh hi. I didn’t see you there. I was just trying out this whole “manifesting” thing. Fingers crossed. This song is a little too car commercially for me. This sounds like the kind of song that accompanies an instacart ad that I have to hear 650,000,000 time because I refuse to pay for another subscription service. Que’ Onda Guero - By golly this white boy is funky. Am I allowed to have fun? Not really, but if you can keep a secret, despite this song bringing pretty dumb; it’s pretty damn fun. Girl - The least common song subject. Companionship. That’s some of my trademark silliness. I have nothing else to say about the lyrics. I apologize to all of the literary aficionados who diligently tune in to this web page. This is another song that I feel like I shouldn’t like. Alas, my toes are tapping. Elliott Smith meets Nirvana. Missing - Well we had to come off the high eventually. This sounds like a song that isn’t good. I think I’m getting really close to discovering music criticism. I can feel it. Black Tambourine - This ode to a specific instrument was uhh fine. This is kind of just chugging along. Not horrible or anything. Earthquake Weather - I like this song title. It’s just so nonsensical to me. Makes me think, and that typically takes a village. Decent song. Very laid back. Hell Yes - Hell Yes. We’re back to funky white boi hours. This is a guilty pleasure song in every sense of the word(s). There is a sense of irony which makes this acceptable to listen to. The sounds are so fun. Broken Drum - Oh we’re getting emotional. Another song about an instrument and another fine moment in time that is this album. Scarecrow - Isn’t this the start of Billie Jean? Why is this kind of good as well? I feel like I should hate this but I just can’t. I’m scaring myself. Go It Alone - Oh man the creepy synth break in the middle here. That’s pretty wild for such a silly song. Farewell Ride - Ehhhhhhh it’s still not bad. God damn. Even a dumbass cowboy song is grabbing me. It’s really not that dumb. The soundscape is so interesting here. It seems that there a thousand things going on and I barely know where to listen. In a good way! Rental Car - Hey, that weird 2002 nu-metal breakdown in the middle actually went hard as hell. This is a really fun track. Emergency Exit - I am very slowly evacuating the small toaster fire that is this album. The quirkiest fire evacuation in the world. Make sure your beanies are fire resistant! Quick the Sufjan Stevens vinyl melts the fastest. This album is more concrete proof that my brain has been damaged by our food and daily activities. I don’t care about “vibes” or if something is “chill” but boy howdy, the chill vibes got me on this one. Producing this cool of a record, whilst also being so unapologetically dorky is a massive achievement. The production was impressive to me here. The layering of sounds and introduction of odd background vocals or obscure instruments made everything sound so interesting. Sometimes music can be mindlessly enjoyed, and as the mind fades, I’ll need more of that content. Hook me up to the vibes machine. I’m ready to let go. 3.5 HIGHLIGHTS: Que’ Onda Guero, Girl, Hell Yes, Rental Car

Starts so strong and loses the second half 3 1/2 stars

This is very hit or miss for me Favourite song: Que' Onda Guero

Beck's highest charting album that included "E-Pro" and "Girl" incorporated alternative rock and hip-hop with sampling and psychedelia into a fun album.

Cool selection of melodies and rythms.

This is the second Beck album on the list so far, so only twelve remaining Beck albums. This is the first time I’ve heard the lyric “Burger King crown” in any song, so that’s a plus for Mr. Beck. Otherwise I like that he tries to make each track different from the others. Unfortunately, all the songs seemed forgettable.

More Beck!? First, throw this album cover right in the trash. How dare they cover the doodly monstrosity with a fake sticker. Second, here's the return of the Beck I know and mildly dislike. Peak hipster. Highlights: 'Girl' (I thought the lyric "my sun-eyed girl" was "My son, a girl", oops), 'Missing' (mainly because it sounds exactly like 'Cold Feet' by Lost Lander) Lowlights: 'Qué Onda Guero' (Even though I too existed whitely on Pico and Vermont), 'Farewell Ride'

I liked Beck, he's made some cool music. I liked the first song if this album, but by the end of the album I forgot I was listening to it.

Standout Songs: Girl Earthquake Weather Broken Drum Scarecrow Go It Alone

I love heavy riff-driven, kinda blues-rock and hip-hop-inspired music and this has this in spades but there are a number folk music-y tracks as well. “Go it alone” grabbed me the most on first listen but there’s enough here to give this several spins. The lyrics are typical Beck (you can only guess what they men) but they do create mental pictures that resonate, like an abstract painting rather than traditional storytelling. Instead of telling a clear narrative, he throws out fragments, surreal images, and pop-culture debris, creating a vibe or mental picture rather than a message. I’m left with a country and Western doomed Cowboy vibe.

It’s fine.

Un disco bastante extraño de Beck, que normalmente se mueve en los mundos del folk y el rock alternativo. Sin embargo, en este disco combina eso con toques de psicodelia y trip hop, consiguiendo una fusión bastante peculiar. Decente. 3/5

Ecclectic mix of styles that meanders everywhere, yet goes nowhere. Nothing really stands out and I will probably forget this album soon. The songs themselves are not horrible. 3/5

Good album, fun to revisit. He has better / more influential albums. Starting to doubt this list at this point honestly.

The tediously wilful eccentricity is still there but when he tones it down and finds a groove there's some really excellent stuff

It is just okay, standard alternative rock from 2005. Doesn't really stand out much compared to other Becks. I find I enjoy his more rock oriented work when it isn't quite so polished... The song dedicated to Elliott Smith was nice

Takie, że ciężko powiedzieć. Kilka fajnych kawałków, ale takie zamulone wszystko.

Mad album cover. Different to other Beck I’ve heard (Sea Change) but I’m not so sure that this is my jam..

Beck: Guero: Better than I expected. A lot of really weird tracks and a lot of variety. I enjoyed all of them, though the quality range is pretty big. Some of the songs were ok, and some were excellent. The album goes on a little long, but I would say I enjoyed it, though I would not call it amazing. 7/10

This sounds like standard-issue(?) Beck, if there is such a thing. But I can’t say any of the songs, except maybe “Broken Drum,” really speak to me.

I really like Beck but this is one of his least interesting albums. Though he still writes songs even here, it’s sort of dragged down by the backing tracks.

Truly the ultimate white man musician. This one feels like Beck is playing it safe. There are still great songs here but it doesn’t feel as experimental as Sea Change or Odelay. Favorite songs were E-Pro, Girl, Earthquake Weather, and Go It Alone.

Enjoyable. Experimental. But not exactly memorable.

Pretty solid. Like the samples but sometimes verge on being a bit corny (same with the lyrics). Good beats, fun to bop to. Faves are first 3 tracks: “E-Pro”, “Girl”, and “Que’Onda Guero”. Plus “Hell yes”.

Enjoyable and beck’s musicality is interesting and easy to listen to.

I am somewhat familiar with Beck, having heard Odelay once or twice (though I can't recall much from it). Everything else he's attested to is new to me, though. I liked a reasonable portion of this - mostly for the trippy/psych pockets it explores, and appreciated the experimentation throughout. The production, to its credit, has aged well, too, allowing the dreamy elements of the album to envelop the listener. However, it really did feel lengthy and like a struggle to get through in one sitting. I'm also unmoved by the vocals, which serve a purpose but don't really capture my imagination. I found my attention drifting a bit towards the middle, and couldn't immediately recall what I'd just heard prior, but "Hell Yes" reeled me back in again as a vastly different hip hop track with a classic 90s feel to it.

Too many Beck albums sound the same

Inventive but not great

Good album. So distinctly Beck that is hard to separate from other work by him. 7/10

Beck's last good album? Earthquake weather is goated

A decent first choice being an artist that I was aware of, but an album I’ve never heard. That having been said I wasn’t tempted to listen to it too long.

A few bangers, would only listen all the way through just this once

Good album. Maybe if I had bought the CD in the 2000s I would have forced myself to listen to again and again.

Since Odelay I’ve been dreading the next Beck album, but I must say I was pleasantly surprised by this. Obviously a little wonky but not in the grating, inaccessible way I was expecting

I liked and knew E-Pro, fun song to listen to, liked a few of the mixed up varieties like que onda, the middle of the album just kinda blended together to just songs that sounded like Beck. Liked a few of the ending tracks with that twang sound, but probably wouldn't revisit anything.

Listening casually (work day), super intriguing vibes across the album. Retro cali cowboy fr, very 2000s. Lots of songs I personally may never return to, but the vibes are fun, don't regret listening through it a few times. Beck is so creative. Don't think I would ever have FOMO of a live performance of this album based off of listening. Personally love Earthquake Weather; and like E-Pro, Que' Onda Guero, Girl, and Go It Alone (feel like essential-to-know songs).

An intermix of musical styles. A few turned out to be worth listening to.

Ultimately, I just don’t think Beck is that exciting I guess.

I was today years old when I found out Beck has been making music in the 21st Century. It's decent Alternative Rock music, and quite honestly, there isn't much else to say about it. Favorite Track: "Farewell Ride".

Fine. I want the other beck

I had this CD when it came out. It was fun to revisit today but it doesn't stack up to my favorite Beck albums.

This type of hipster chill sound, displayed here and by many other 2000s/2010s indie rock bands, doesn't come off as very cool to me. But Beck does it better than most, and I enjoyed this album well enough to give a 3. But there's nothing memorable enough to make me feel a desire to return to this album.

I enjoyed a number of Beck songs back in the day. I appreciated the variety of musical styles on the record but ultimately dated and unexciting. Highlight: Que Onda Guero. Track that should never need made: Girl. Ugh.

Interesante....mmmm, interesante

Very cool dude makes cool music. Unfortunately, just being that cool doesn't make your music that great. A blend of genres and without a doubt an ear for blending them I found the middle of the lp a bit forgettable. Personal favorites include "epro", "girl" and "farewell ride". 3.5 🌟

this went triple platinum in someone's weird uncle's garage for sure

I’m not a fan of Beck. He’s fine IMO. This album is listenable. There’s talent and good production. But it didn’t make me appreciate him any more than I already did (which isn’t much). It’s another of those albums that I can’t understand why it’s on this list.

Download

Same as the other Beck albums: certainly not horrible, certainly not great. Really nothing much to say about it at all. No idea why this album is supposed to deserve a spot in this book. Let alone why this artist is supposed to deserve at least three spots.

Pretty good if somewhat forgettable album

Beetje droog

Good album, not his best but some solid tunes.

It’s a continuation of Odalay and Midnight Vultures but less party and more serious. Can’t say if that is a good thing or bad thing.

Didn't love it; didn't hate it

Not what I was expecting

As per usual, Beck is the definition of 2.5/5 - not bad, nothing that stands out.

Beck is fun, but even with very little Beck exposure, Beck just comes off sounding like Beck. I guess he is one of those artists that you either love or you hate. I neither love or hate his music, but it's not anything I reach for on the shelf. Highlights: Black Tamborine, Broken Drum, Scarecrow.

This album leans more punk-inspired than other Beck releases I’ve come across, which gives it a really fresh and fun energy. It’s an entertaining listen that keeps you on your toes, blending punk rock with elements of country, funk, and electronic in a compelling way. While a few tracks like Go It Alone and Farewell Ride were a bit of a snooze, Earthquake Weather stood out as a definite highlight.

Interesting layered sound. Knew and loved 'Black Tambourine' already - but also particularly enjoyed 'Farewell Ride' (the slide guitar) and 'Send a Message to Her'.

Хорошая музыка, атмосферная, но без пиков

The first half of this is faultless but it tails off on side 2. A very good album.

This album was viewed at the time to be Beck's return to the sound that made him popular in the 90's. Pan-genre psychedelic pop songs with lots of sampling. While there is some of that here, it obvious does not reach the heights of Odelay, but I don't think it's trying to either. Still, Beck remains an inventive songwriter, and at this time the world of indie pop was just beginning to catch up with this type of sound, so there was a whole new context to place this album and artist in. Key tracks: E-Pro Girl

It’s fine! Probably a 3.5, it has some great stuff and then some less stuff!

With the only personal highlight of the album being the song "Girl", this was mostly an underwhelming album but not necessarily with any songs that were atrocious. Similar to his other entry, I would rate this a 2.5 and bumping it to 3 to avoid the riff-raff.

Wasn't in the mood for Beck but it's the same as Odelay. Cool album stylistically. A talented guy, but not for me. 3/5.

Pop rock from the 2000s. I like the more produced tracks with drum machines, scratching and close to rapping - those must be clearly inspired by Gorillaz. Too much variation in genre to make an album that feels like a whole in my opinion.

It’s Beck

Beck is unmistakably Beck. It starts to blend together within the album but points for being distinct from his contemporaries. Broken drum in particular was haunting, beautiful, and poignant. Big fan of that one

Dude writes some insanely catchy and yet original songs. Not his best but all Beck is at least good Beck. 3.5 stars

Honestly listened to this while doing chores, I think it’s a good album but not many songs really stood out

I really enjoyed the energy in the first half of the album! The vibe was very carefree and fun, I could see myself blasting this by the beach with a beer in hand. I wouldn't say I am a Beck fan, but this album had a handful of songs I would happily listen to again. The experimental elements looped in with the rock/hip hop vibe is my favorite part of the album!

Your Setting Sun, Your Broken Drum 1001 Albums Generator 37 (05/23/2025) Beck is a bit of an anomalous artist. He never found himself fitting into a box and any attempt to label him with a specific genre was swiftly discarded once he released his next album. After the melancholy and folksiness found on his eighth studio album, Sea Change, Beck completely switched it up with a somewhat back-to-basics return to form in Guero. With a sound that harkens back to his early career hits off of Odelay and Mellow Gold, Guero is certainly more similar to what people had come to expect from the eclectic multi-instrumentalist. However, this album features wide ranging inspiration beyond its alternative rock base, such as trip hop, alternative country, and psychedelia. Similar to yesterday's album, Nitin Sawhney's Beyond Skin, Guero is a melting pot of genre influences. Hopefully Guero is able to execute its experimentation better. The album opens with its biggest song and the first Beck tune I had ever heard: E-Pro. While I don't claim to know what the lyrics are about, I know that ever since I heard that chorus on Rockband when I was a young child, it's been stuck in my head. Que Onda Guero is a hip hop song with a great 90's style boom bap beat. Beck raps with his usual abstract lyricism while field recordings play that are meant to emulate the sounds of a largely Latino area in Los Angeles, similar to the area that Beck grew up in. The third track, Girl, is one of my favorites and also features the first bit of country inspired slide guitar on the album, which we will see much more of throughout the tracklist. From here, we get Black Tambourine, which struck me immediately as being like an inferior E-Pro. It just has a very similar feel but is not able to quite capture the energy of its more popular older brother. Hell Yes, the third single from this album, is another hip hop song, which I actually like even better than Que Onda Guero. It just has such an interesting beat with a kind of glitchy, cut up sample that plays throughout right before Beck says "Hell yes" in a robotic voice. This song's experimentation is great. Following this is the very unique Broken Drum, which is far and away the most heartbreaking song on the album. It was written for Beck's friend and fellow artist Elliott Smith, who had died suddenly a couple years previously. The last third or so of this album is not as high quality as the rest. I think that in general a lot of the energy found earlier on the tracklist is not present from Scarecrow to Emergency Exit. Scarecrow is kind of a boring acoustic blues rocker and Go It Alone features Jack White on the bass, which makes sense, as this song sounds a bit like a rejected White Stripes song. Farewell Ride has an interesting alt-country ambiance to it, but it fails to really go anywhere. Rental Car is my favorite song in this streak, but Emergency Exit is a weak ending to the album. I read somewhere that there were two more songs considered to be added to the album, but I'm glad that they weren't. I think that the advent of CD's, while a great technological advancement, did lead to artists being able to bloat their albums, as opposed to the constricting vinyl. Guero is an example of that. Guero certainly features more good songs than bad, but it struggles with a problem that is all too common in albums from its era: bloat. Despite this, it jumps between various styles with relative ease and gracefulness, and overall I am glad that I listened to it. 3.5/5, rounded down to a 3/5. Favs: E-Pro Girl Hell Yes Least Fav: Missing

É um album para ser ouvido uma vez por ano dependendo do humor. Nao é ruim, mas tambem nao é excelente. “E-Pro”, “Earthquake Weather” e “Emergency Exit” são boas. Acho que não curti as batidas.

This is one of the very few Beck albums that I LIKE (don't love.) Most of his stuff I am either crazy about or not interested in at all. I remember I found it a little disappointing when it was released, but looking back that was at least partly just because he was coming off such an amazing streak of albums. Listening to this today, it's a little better than I remembered. I always liked the stronger/catchier tracks ("E-Pro", "Girl", "Hell Yes",) but never really got into the rest 20 years ago. (Also, I can't believe this album is 20 years old.) After a strong opening 3 tracks, tracks 4 and 6 still do nothing for me though. Kind of brings the album to a screeching halt for me, after a several-album stretch where I would play Beck albums start to finish without losing interest (Mellow Gold, Odelay, Mutations, Midnite Vultures, Sea Change.) I am also convinced nobody is reading these things I write on here, so I feel free to ignore that One Foot in the Grave was in the middle of that stretch and I own it but am not sure I have ever listened to it all the way through, lol. Looking at his discography chronologically, this is the album where I lost interest in Beck. I bought the next one but may have only listened to it once. Didn't get anymore after that. If I could give this 2.5 stars, I would. But I can't, so my love for the stronger tracks earns it a 3.

I was a big fan of Beck in high school and college. After Midnight Vultures getting worn out in my CD player, I was highly anticipating this album. And the feeling I had listening to it this time was the exact same as the first time I heard it. The first 3 tracks had promise and then it fell off a cliff. A bit of a disappointment all around.

I remember this came out in high school, I can't remember if I bought this or not, but like most Beck albums, it was kind of a second or third tier album for me. I liked a lot of the songs ("e-pro", "Girl", "Black Tambourine"), but I never felt a strong connection to the lyrics or songs. Beck is a notable artist from the mid-90s through 2010s, and should probably have a few albums included (Odelay, and maybe Morning Phase, which notably won album of the year over Beyonce), not sure if this is one of his most important although apparently its his best selling.

Idk either 3/4 really good album. Surprisingly, the music was different and unique loved the beats and vocals. Really just felt good listening to this. Each song completely different.

Fine music, not really my taste

This is Beck’s awkward middle child album. He said better albums before and better albums after this release. It’s just OK.

very interesting but all over the place

I get that people like Beck, but his music never really clicked for me. Something about his songwriting and melodies that throws me off. Having said that, it's not really terrible either.

Pleasant but nothing special

Jeff was better

I like Beck. Beck’s done some great things. But I don’t think EVERY album he’s made needs to be on this list. This is okay but it’s just Beck being Beck. It’s not Odelay. It’s not Morning Phase. It’s alright. Three and a half stars.

Excellent album.

Missing is the stand out

Funny to get this the day after The Who Sell Out: like with the Who, this is now my third Beck album and I’m not even 100 albums in. I believe there are still some The Who albums left, but I should be done with Beck after this (I think). One thing I can appreciate is the variety of genres both across and within albums (even if I don’t always like it) and this one is no different. I think I enjoyed this one the most yet, but nearing the end some songs dragged a bit. E-Pro, Que’ Onda Guerro, Black Tambourine, Hell Yes

E-Pro - what is this from?? Some tunes (Girl, black tambourine, go it alone) but long

Good alternative rock/hip-hop/sampledelia album by Beck, it's consistent and interesting throughout. But none of the songs really stand out, as it was the case with 'Loser' from his famous Odelay album. Somehow all the songs flow from one to another. Perhaps that's the reason it's a bit difficult to get into the album at first listen. 3.5, pretty close to 4 but I'll stick with 3 stars first.

Strong start and end again, as someone who only knows loser by beck i enjoyed this album but all the songs sounded the same

Not as good as his other work

I liked this one exactly as much as I expected. I’m probably more familiar with Odelay, but honestly I don’t know much about Beck’s catalog. It is definitely larger than I expected, but I don’t see myself diving into it. It’s fine, good background music while working.

It was fine, felt a little bland in the grand scheme of things.

feels maybe most notable thinking ab it as an inflection, or maybe un-inflection, point in the larger beck discog, of which i only retain a fraction but its hard to ignore that this is the followup to sea change is rly what im saying HJFFS. prob works best when its putting the quirky beck style in a more downcast, disillusioned tone...too old and grouchy for blissfully meaningless odelay-style nonsense, but heart firmly still back behind its protective cage. rly not my ideal setup for a beck record either way tbh (and this kinda sputters out by the end unfortunately) but in a strange way, despite this being one of his most accessible, its probably more for the fans than anything, those who have wormed their way into some kind of emotional trajectory in his mostly very cryptic and guarded music. could be rewarding if i ever have the time for it, i can dig a guy who just finds a couple sounds and is like I Can Make A Song Outta That, but my instinct is he's more of an arm-lengths artist for me, yaknow

Peak Beck, kvalitet. Men litt i lengste laget, aka noe ujevn kvalitet

Not my favorite album by Beck.

Well composed. Worth another listen

Its decent, for some reason ive just been struggling to enjoy it. think i just need more time with it

Álbum muy Beck: Guitarra acústica con sonidos western meets sonidos y voz hablada/semi etérea. En este álbum sentí que estaba a punto de ver una película indie que tomaba lugar en California (primera parte) y en la segunda parte se van a Nuevo México.

Only Beck album I had heard before was Sea Change. That's a record I loved from the first listen. Not the case here. I like a lot of it, very interesting mix of styles and use of textures and loops, but unfortunately sometimes this happens at the expense of the song. That said, when it's good it's great (and when it's not great it makes me want to watch that episode of Futurama). Would give 3.5 stars if possible. Favourite tunes: E-Pro, Girl, Earthquake Weather, Send a Message to Her.

Four songs are really good. The rest are meh

This album takes me back to when I'd watch music videos before the school bus arrived. Life and TV used to be just a bit simpler. A fun album all around for me.

Good album

Good sound. Boring after a while.

Could’ve been so great if it was a shorter album

Solid 7/10: I like the combination of electronic, country, rock, and hip-hop elements. Sometimes the album feels like it gets lost in its own style and takes a track or two to keep moving.

Pretty standard Beck album

I like it more than Odelay.

It's very beck, it's the best beck I've heard but still not a fan

Eclectic, awesome

No. 311/1001 E-Pro 3/5 Que‘Onda Guero 3/5 Girl 3/5 Missing 3/5 Black Tambourine 3/5 Earthquake Weather 4/5 Hell Yes 2/5 Broken Drum 4/5 Scarecrow 3/5 Go It Alone 3/5 Farewell Ride 3/5 Rental Car 3/5 Emergency Exit 3/5 Average: 3,08 Decent album, nothing that I really loved, but altogether a pleasant listen.

Solid heard a few before. Think this could be the definition of a 3star. Seems appropriate.

Distinctive sound but some real lows for me! Beck story 2: I saw U2 live at the bills stadium in Buffalo and Beck opened for them and Beck seemed almost amateurish because playing to a football field is an impossible feat. But U2.... Those lads know how to play

Beck is so confusing to me. Like his grandpa was a great Fluxus artist, his mom was andy warhol’s protegee, in mekas movies and Vaginal Davis(!!)’s bestie. His dad is like an extremely prolific producer and film composer. All these people are cool. Beck is a stupid cheugy scientologist. Anyways the music is pretty nice

He made some good points here and there.

I feel the same about this one as I did the other Beck we did, this is just B-Tier Failure.

Que 'Onda Guero was a good attempt at rewriting 'Loser', and 'Hell Yes' was pretty good - but otherwise nothing on here grabbed me.

good beats but still not a fan of dudes singing

I like Beck but I would not choose this as his most influential or even 2nd or third best album. Still enjoyable but not a must listen.

This is weird. To the point where I don't really enjoy any particular song enough to call it a "favorite". Might to a partial re-listen to see if I just missed a song that I really like. With that said, though, it is a really vibey album and is a nice listen. I don't know if I have much else to really say about it, though. I don't think this is a great album, but it's a good listen and interesting. Favorite Song(s): Broken Drum

It’s got some catchy songs. There’s some Interesting sounds too.

Groovy album. What a talent Beck is!

I was previously familiar with Beck but not this album. This was a pretty interesting listen. As is typical with Beck, there's a vast range of sounds and genres represented. While there wasn't a single standout track that I had to hear again, I would listen to the album again.

Pretty good.

It was alright but kind of faded into the background, I wouldn't be against listening to it again but I doubt I'll go out of my way to

I have to appreciate it for being very creative and different, but it doesn't leave room for fun songs. The songs in this album don't go anywhere. 9 times out of 10 the instrumental you hear at the start, is going to be the instrumental you hear throughout the entire song. Oh and also, all the rap tracks are buns. Not gonna come back to this one.

Energetic, nice background music Fav song - Girl 3/5

***An ok album

Solid. Not great. There’s some weird stuff here, but his acoustic guitar songs always stand out to me.

Meh, not my favorite. Some catchy songs.

3 out of 5. I liked this better than Sea Change.

Another one I've given a thorough listening to. I can see the appeal of the album - it's interesting and well made, but doesn't do enough for me to love it, or want to keep returning to it.

A real jumble, quality-wise, and more evidence to me that Beck, while capable of producing some truly great songs, is simply not my bag most of the time. Highlight is E-Pro, killer groove, great wordless chorus a la some of its contemporary alt rock hits (Song 2, Wake Up, etc.), a few seminal Beck-isms ("talking trash to the garbage around you"/"hammer my bones on the anvil of daylight"). Lowlight is Go It Alone, which is so NHL 08 core it hurts to listen to, and which may have committed the unforgiveable sin of inspiring the careers of The Arkells and their legion of talentless peers. On balance, that's probably worth three stars?

Not for me.

It’s good. But it’s not something I will strongly resonate with. Also I find it not very memorable. Maybe it can be a 4 if I spend more time on it.

i think that Guero is an interesting album, in that it definitely covers a lot of ground... but its just aight in my opinion. kinda strikes me as an artist/album that is quirky, so they are automatically cooler? I dunno, its an interesting take. Guero is fine. probably wouldn't go back to it, but am glad that i sat down and listened to my first full Beck album.

First album on the list for me! Have been a very casual listener of Beck. Some stuff I like some not so much. This album was a pleasant surprise. I liked the chilled, funky and sometimes bluesy vibe. Would listen to again. 3.5/5

-eigenwillig -iwie nicht mein Ding -vllt ein slow burner (?)

Some great tracks but a bit inconsistent. 2.8

I’m a back fan, but this is not my favorite. Second back album already we’ll see what else they have in this list.

Ganz schön unterschiedliche Songs, interessant auf jeden Fall

It was good. Picking a Beck album that doesn't include Loser is the wrong choice though.

I should like this one but I just can't get into it... for example, "Que' Onda Guero" is fun, but it's too long. I know it's only 3 minutes but still...they are simply not attractive enough. Whatever Beck want to.achieve here, it just doesn't work. I don't know why. It's a rather pale album with interesting things going on. Probably between 2.5-3/5

already listened, rating anyway E-Pro - 5/5 Que' Onda Guero - 4/5 Girl - 4/5 Missing - 3/5 Black Tambourine - 4/5 Earthquake Weather - 3/5 Hell Yes - 3/5 Broken Drum - 3/5 Scarecrow - 3/5 Go It Alone - 5/5 Farewell Ride - 4/5 Rental Car - 3/5 Emergency Exit - 3/5 Total score: 3.6/5 (rounding down) it's a fine album, much like the rest of Beck's discography. the middle tracks were probably the weakest and least memorable to me, but there was nothing on here that was unbearable by any means

I don't get the hype with Beck. Its fine.

Beck being fun again! This was well appreciated back when it was released but it's somewhat flat today when compared to Odelay and other favourites. Still lots of good stuff here.

I like Girl and Earthquake Weather, Broken Drum was pretty solid too, weirdly enough I preferred the latter part of this album. Alright variety with the songs but they're all very beck-y.

This album was fine. It’s not his best, and it kinda drags in the second half. It kind of reminds me of late Wes Anderson-“still got the vibes, but now we’re just parodying ourselves.” I’d likely not revisit it past this listen. This is really properly a 2.5, but not offensive to round down, I’d be ok with it in in the background.

The style of this album is very of its time

Not my cup of tea, but I can appreciate the music.

Relevant at the time, still enjoyable, but not amazing. I do like how he mixes genres.

Good sound. Never listened to them before.

6.5, pretty chill, would listen again, not super up my alley but good rock and experimental

I feel like if I listened to this when I was younger, I would have loved it. I'm not as into the very metal and harsh rock music recently. I would say overall it's not a bad album but I would probably not listen to it again.

I enjoyed this album though a lot of the songs sounded somewhat the same.

Some decent stuff here. Good music but I don't know. Beck isn't the best singer there is.

Odelay, but not as good. Had that Brazilian sounding track in my head for days

Kind of interesting, nothing that really captivated me. I like the singer's voice and the variety of sounds on this album. It's a little too long

The talent of Beck Hansen is not disputed. His focus on rhythms and experimentation without exaggeration is the forte of this album. Somewhat lo-fi with use of tech-y hi-fi sounds. Among the bombastic, bam bam toe tapping numbers, you can definitely hear the early genesis of some tracks that are on his best album, Morning Phase. 3 E-Pros out of 5 for me.

The guy is a genius, I love his slide guitar. I liked the single...but too few good moments in the album...repetitive at some points. Worth 2.5 but rated 3

Impressive, but may be not exactly what I would like.

I hadn’t listened to anything from Beck since Odelay in ’96, and I’d been telling myself for a while that I should catch up, especially since his albums generally still get good reviews. Well, I finally did it—and it’s cool. So, it’s from 2005, but it sounds like the ’90s, and in the end, it’s quite similar to Beck’s albums from that era. Still offbeat, sometimes haunting, original… but logically no longer groundbreaking. That said, the influences are varied enough that you never really know what to expect from one track to the next, and that’s something I appreciate. Overall, it’s an easy and nice listen, and I enjoyed the experience— some songs are a bit weak but some are also surprisingly good in my opinion : « Rental Car » has been stuck in my head ever since.

Solid.

this is fine. a couple bops. beck is jughead to me

Not a bad alternative rock album, with some highlights that shine without overshadowing the rest of the album.

first album

Strong 3? Weak 4? Let's call it a 3 1/2.

Beck is one of my second tier go to bands. Someone I will listen to no problem and I know well. I don't love THIS album as much as some of his others but it is still Beck and still pretty fitting to my eclectic style. I really like how each song has its own energy and I never get bored. I don't think Beck falls victim to "greatest hits syndrome" yet I will maintain that this was not my favorite of theirs...

Beck's best but didn't get into it

Goes on for a bit, but not bad

По мнению А: 4/5 По мнению С: 3/5 ИТОГОВАЯ ОЦЕНКА: 3/5 (15.02.2025)

This one was much better than odelay. Enjoyed it

Pretty much just became inoffensive background noise. Not great, not bad, but quite forgettable.

I actually meant the above review for this record. I liked it but not so much the slow songs

Sort of rap vocals over some fairly rocky music- not terrible, but not my sound at all.

This was alright - some good tracks.

Good throw back to high school for me.

Not terrible. Not Loser. Mid Road Beck. 3.33/5

this is the Beck I'm more used to hearing on the radio, although I didn't know any of these songs prior to pressing play. that's probably due to the presence of the Dust Brothers on production, who had previously worked with Beck on Odelay, his most commercially successful album. Beck's eclecticism is back on full display here, especially in comparison with his previous album, Sea Change, which was a lot more singular from a musical and conceptual perspective. there's positives and negatives associated with either approach. I like hearing such a diverse array of instruments from song to song, especially how they get chopped up and reorganized. I just don't think the songwriting is quite as impactful or consistent as I've heard from Beck before. if (or when) I get some more Beck albums out of this list, I'd like to come back to Guero and see if I feel any differently about it. decent 6/10.

alright, i see the vibes. kind of reminds me of gorillaz. not usually what i gravitate towards, but hey, maybe it’ll grow on me. i do like the experimental sounds, but i like the way r&b and rap does it more ngl.

Pretty cool sound, still not really my thing but nice to listen to, cool opener, nice flow, good variety in sound and style

Pleasant to listen to, added a few songs to my playlist. Overall it was not super special and didn't catch my attention too much but still enjoyable all the way through. I'm a bit torn between a 2 or a 3 but considering other albums I've rated 2, I think this is better so I will put it at 3. I would give it a 2.5/5 if possible.

It’s ok, albeit a bit dull

Average

Album #2 of the day. It loses steam near the end but all in all is just a really solid 2000s rock album. Don't expect the energy to last throughout but the opener, E-Pro, is really solid.

Definitely piqued my interest but wasn't interested enough?

Too much noise. Some parts are fun. But too white person funky to enjoy.

I would love to say that i loved this album, and at the start i genuinely did. Unfortunately, this feeling fades away as the album pass by. The beginning was promising, but Beck wasn't capable to keep up album's rhythm. At the end, the album sounds confused and the listener may not understand what happened with the album.

East L.A. vibes, some funk and heavy sampling, festival-ready bangers. With this pedigree I'd have expected something to grab my attention a little more than it did (although fine overall).

Alternative Rock hiphop & electronic elements

some songs were a lot more uninteresting than the others but the good ones were pretty good

It sounds good and all, but it never gets great.

Disco con sonidos interesantes, no había escuchado nada de Beck. He descubierto otra artista. De eso se trata. El disco en sí, cada vez que lo escucho me gusta más, pero no es perfecto para mi. 3 estrellas van bien.

this was decent

Very lukewarm album that doesn't take me anywhere special. The songs alternate between great and tolerable. Very lukewarm Best Song: E-Pro Rating: 5.5/10 3 Stars

Beck's Guero is a really fun and interesting album that feels like a mix of a bunch of different styles. It’s got catchy songs like “E-Pro” that make you want to move, and others like “Girl” that are chill but still stick in your head. The whole album has this cool, laid-back vibe, even when it gets a little weird or experimental. If you like music that’s hard to pin down but still easy to enjoy, this is definitely worth checking out!

More of Beck being Beck and making his own music in whatever style he wants to do, with each track being different from the previous. It's better than some of his other works, but not as good as Guero or Sea Change.

I love Beck, and like this, but wouldn't have it in his top 5 albums, which makes me wonder how much Beck we have ahead. 3.5

I would give it it 3.49. Plenty of interesting tracks but personally I don’t have that much connection to it

Some odd some ok

With as experimental and out-there Beck is, there are always going to be hits and misses on his albums. Beck did a good job being experimental, but also having a sense of cohesiveness throughout the album.

it has really great beck moments, but also some flat and uninspired moments. the single “girl” is lackluster and feels like anyone could have written it. but i love me some “e-pro” and the sloe, groovy “black drum.”

A few quite enjoyable tracks. As a whole the album didn't connect with me like I'd hoped, but it's still quite good. A rounded-down 3.5 stars.

I still don't know what to think about Beck and this album doesn't help. Some of the albums sound unnecessary tiresome and aged badly - especially when Beck tries to incorporate rap. This is more on the rocky side of the things which I do enjoy. It's not mind-blowing and nothing I needed to listen before I die.

Hell yes is a great HipHop influenced song

E-pro is a great track but I was just not that into the rest. Found it boring and annoying in spots. Stark contrast to Sea Change which I do love.

First listen: Rhythm is king. Lots of prominent distorted and pure bass, and the drums littered throughout protrude in almost every song. Percussion is maybe the perfect word to use, lots of it. Beck's ability to string verses together into the chorus is seemless and impressive. He has brilliant cadence and uses theatre of the mind better than most. I can almost always see the person, the thing or the story he is telling in my imagination. Beck's voice is unapologetically authentic, he is and always will be himself vocally. Go It Alone was a song that made me feel uncomfortable yet excited to hear what was coming next - heaps of awesome layers on top of a great melody. Black Tambourine is a short story, almost a poem that you could extract mulitple meanings from - it's fun. However, no song really stuck out to me as a playlist addition. Girl I found a little annoying, and that was kind of a motiff for me personally. Almost every song felt repetitive withe same phrases, musical elements, etc. being used throughout. Some cool songs, sounds and instruments used and explored, I really liked the layering; but I'm not blown away by any of it. It's a funky album with great rhythm, but something I loved, sadly. I really want to like it, but I don't know if I do.

Beck’s albums are all over the place, but this is a good one. Drops off after the first 5 songs or so

3.5 Very soild and an interesting listen. Never really listened to Beck much before besides whats on the radio. Might have to take a listen to the catalog once we finish the list. That should be in a few years time.

this is a cool beck album. not as weird as i wanted it to be but i think it's quite nice anyways

An interesting album which is clearly very influential in the indie scene, but I couldn't quite get into the album as a whole. While there were some great tracks, the songs in between failed to sell the album to me. Standout Tracks: - E-Pro - Girl

Very hard to believe that this would be a top 1000 album. I can think of at least 4/5 better Beck albums, and I don’t consider him to be someone who delivers especially consistent albums. I prefer Beck in folky mode, so this isn’t my favourite version of him. Great lead single and lots of interesting stuff but it’s overlong and my attention wandered. Always worth listening to him, but this is far from his best, in my view.

First Song was enjoyable, then meh

Just another mediocre pop album by Beck. Some catchy riffs but its a little repetitive.

Man the first track on here made me cringe. The rest of the album was decent but that was big hole to climb out of. I don't love Beck to begin with so I'm certainly biased, but I just don't see what he's adding to popular music. "Go It Alone" was the highlight track for me.

Beck is outstanding but has much better other albums

Clever, quirky, talented Beck. Got on his train with Loser and Odelay! This album is pure fun but I found myself ho-humming a bit around the halfway point. Hopefully his album Morning Phase will pop up on our radar, it's gorgeous and a tender side / sound of him I adore.

Quite like

Decent but got a bit repetitive

Decent in places. That first track is that song from that thing back in the 00s… Rental Car feels very Nirvana unplugged

Not bad overall, some good tracks (E-pro and girl) but feels a little lost or too experimental in places. ‘You know I don’t speak Spanish, Baxter’

Parts of it I absolutely loved and others not so much. Overall though I enjoyed it.

I actually enjoyed this album more than the last one. Though it's not really my thing I'll give it a 3

Scarecrow is only scaring himself. I feel that bro.... Decent album from Beck. More enjoyable than the last few.

Didn't expect to like it but I did. A fun fusion of hip-hop, rock, pop and electronic. E Pro and Qué Onda Guero were hip bangers. Girl and Missing had a bittersweet vibe. Earthquake Weather was a super lazy chill-out track. Broken Drum had a post-apocalyptic shoegazy feel to it. Rest of the album was meh though.

Kein Fan von Livealben und die Musik auch nicht überragend.

Kannte Beck nicht. Musik war okay, aber auch nichts was mir im Gedächtnis bleiben wird. Songs der Playlist hinzugefügt: Keine

Liked it more the second time around.

My parents never gave me a proper birds and the bees talk, but I saw the music videos for Sex & Candy (Marcy’s Playground) and Sexx Laws (Beck) every day after school between ‘97 and ‘99 and I didn’t get a girl pregnant until I was 36. I like Beck in medium-sized doses, and took alot of doses over the years, but I don’t think he’s a full-album-through-headphones guy for me right now. I would say hell yeah to a greatest hits, or a few songs on a shuffled playlist, or even this album in the background at a coffee shop - after a few songs, I lean over to my wife and mutter that they’re playing the full album of Guero by Beck, she stares into her latte wondering if she should pop quiz me on her phone number again. Love E Pro and Go It Alone from this one.

Pretty good

This is like a 3.5 star album. I wish there was some sort of theme/style similarity throughout the album, but there just isn't. The random stye jumps are interesting and make for an album that doesn't have any skips, but there's no real cohesiveness that would have me coming back regularly. Not a disappointing one, just felt random. Like if I had ADHD and decided to just create a random playlist.

It’s okay

This is another one in the category of Low (Bowie) for me. I remember seeing posters all over the record store for this album, decided to buy it, and I hated it. Didn't listen to Beck again until I saw him voice a character in Futurama and one of my bandmates made me listen again. I got it this time. Guero is one of those albums that reminds me to try things I do not think I will like.

Gillade den senare hälften mycket mer men en skakig början

Unmistakenly Beck! It’s pretty good. Especially Girl, Black Tambourine, . Buuut 54 minutes of this gets a little too much at a time for my taste. I don’t really get why I have to listen to this before I die. There are definitely other Beck albums that fit that bill much better: Mellow Gold, Odelay or Midnite Vultures. Even Morning Phase.

On the line between like and love and after listening to the first few tracks again, I'm leaning love, but I may forget this album entirely in three days. We Shall See

Beck is not for me. It's all too professional. Not enough HEART in the music. It just does not capture my imagination. I don't dislike it, it's fine, it just leaves me cold.

4/11/24 It's a harmless album, I have no real issues with it. I probably wouldn't listen to it again.

When I first listened to this album, I’ll admit I only had a limited knowledge of Beck’s earlier work, mainly up to and including Odelay. This album struck me as decent, with a sound and production style that felt reminiscent of Odelay. I think The Dust Brothers, who co-produced Odelay, were also involved in this one, which might explain the similar vibe. As I haven’t explored much of Beck's discography beyond those earlier albums, it’s hard for me to compare this to his other work. However, I can say that while it didn’t immediately blow me away, I will certainly give it another listen. It might not be as groundbreaking as Odelay, but it still has Beck’s signature experimental twist. If you're a fan of his sound from that era, this album is likely worth a try.

I vowed never to listen to a full Beck album because he is a Scientologist. If anyone could put effective subliminal messages into their songs, it’s him. I’m going to go for it though, my mind is strong. There’s samples, samples are always good to hear in a song. I really feel like it’s a dying art form. To me, this is classic Beck. Decent songs but not overly great. Somewhat catchy but scattered lyrics most of the time that only he understands, though I feel he geared himself towards a more pop feel with this one. I don’t know, it’s not bad but it’s not blowing my mind. It’s worth a listen to be able to agree with me, which you will. Choice cut: Scarecrow

🎧Good songs: E-Pro, Girl, Go It Alone. Sonically mish-mashed, altogether fine but somewhat forgettable songs: everything else here.

Something about Beck's layered fuzzy sound nauseates me. I'm sure he's really good if he doesn't make you want to throw up. Soy un perdidor.

Not a huge Beck fan outside of Odelay, and this album is really a mixed bag. “E-Pro,” “Girl,” and “Broken Drum” are the best songs, with the latter being the standout track. Production was decent and there were some interesting lyrics, but overall it was just okay. I definitely understand why this one got removed from the list in later editions.

Quite liked it, but quite same

Not exactly my style, but pretty damn cool sounding. Very original, hard to pinpoint a genre. Tiny bit of a Gorillaz x Nine Inch Nails (but cleaner) vibe, clearly early 2000s. No real bangers though?

This is more what I was expecting of a Beck album when “Sea Change” popped up. I don’t like this one nearly as much (although it’s not bad).

It's interesting, pulling from lots of influences and doing it well. I've liked every song so far, but I don't know if I would listen to this as a full album again.

Having only known odelay, this was an interesting listen. Song with slide guitar? Check. Random samples? Check. Vocals in that weird beck-style intonation? Check! It's fine, but not something I'll ever revisit... Probably

It's okay. Felt like it dragged on a bit though

This was a hard one to review, actually want to come back to it and can see it getting more enjoyment on future listens. Probably needed another day with it. E-pro is a banger 3.5/5

I think I can now confidently say I don't like Beck. At least he's distinctive and mixes things up.

Classic Beck: A little eclectic, a little ironic, a little problematic. The latter isn't for appropriation so much as it mostly for Christina Ricci (!?)'s wild ass Japanese accent. In fact, I wish he's gone for more pure internationalism on this album since it gives the album its strongest moments. After all, M.I.A. was just starting to make a career off of it around this time, and if any established American artist was going to really go for it, well...

Out of all the artists that go by one name, Beck is one of them

I like the first few songs, but then I lost interest.

как обычно знаю всего одну песню с самого успешного альбома исполнителя и за то спасибо ОС. надо потом послушать всего Бека, хотя я на нём обжигалась уже…

I did not know this musician. Quite enjoyable as he plays a variety of styles. I like his voice and appreciated all of the tracks.

First, if you haven't seen the video to Girl, you have to check it out. Think Mad Magazine fold-in. I admit I never really "got" Beck and his oddball (to me) lyrics. For me, lyrics might be the most important part of the song. I did like this album but it didn't change my life or anything and I prefer Mixed Bizness if I had to pick a Beck album.

A pleasant surprise, diverse sounds.

Decent. 3/5

Sons étranges et expérimentaux mêlant du DnB, electonica, rock et pop. Pas fan.

dont get it but its not awful

I liked it for the most part

e pro- 5 or 6 que onda guero- i, too, sleep on the sidewalk with a burgerking crown. 6 girl- 4 or 5 missing- 5 black tambourine- 6 earthquake weather- 5 hell yes- 4 or 5 broken drum- 5 scarecrow- 4 go it alone- 4 farewell ride- breaking bad. 4 or 5 rental car- 5 emergency exit- 5 beck more like mid 😎

Decent album, not amazing.

I’m not as enamored of this album as I was in my 20s, but there are still some cool, inventive tracks here. The front half is definitely stronger than the back.

I think Beck writes music, not songs. Great talent but just doesn’t do it for me.

It's cool but it's not my favorite by him. One of those albums in between the great ones where he was finding his next step

Kind of boring, didn't finish listening to it. The first song had a creative music video though.

This album is truly a variety pack. Mostly rock songs with some hip hop sounding songs along with some other styles, overall I found the album to be somewhat enjoyable Standout tracks: E-Pro, Girl, Go It Alone

The germ of a good album here but falls flat too often, strange this in included given Beck's other superior albums included 3*

First time listening to Beck other than the song Loser, me gusta.

the best work i have listened from beck yet. Def his most consistent work. (3.5/5.0)
