groovy but a little annoying
I think this is a fine album, but it's not one of my favorites by Beck. This, Odelay, and Sea Change are all on this list. I think that Odelay, Midnight Vultures, and Morning Phase would be the three Beck albums that I would pick. However, this is all a matter of opinion, and other folks are entitled to theirs This album benefits by being produced by the Dust Brothers, who also worked on Odelay. What bothers me about this album is that it doesn't feel like he's doing anything new here. A lot of this album feels like Odelay II: Not as Good as Odelay. I guess you could say that this album focuses more on chill grooves from Beck, but I feel like I can get that anywhere. It makes me feel like commercial success is doing a lot of heavy lifting for this album, whereas there are multiple albums that are far more musically interesting that could be on this list 3/5

I've always been weirdly mid on Beck considering how much he checks the boxes for something I'd like. This definitely feels in line with the better stuff like Odelay but still just not exceptionally exciting to me.
Nice and cheerful, if a bit too long for its own good. I like how Beck is able to completely reinvent himself with every album. Not that many people can claim similar levels of talent.
I really want to like Beck. I feel like I SHOULD like Beck. It just refuses to click with me.
Solidly middle-of-the-road, easy listening album
Like the previous Beck album, this was a decent listen but not something I need to hear again.
I thought I was going to rate this higher, I had this CD back in the day and it is very nostalgic that me. It is the only Beck album I've ever been into. I think each Beck song is very one-dimensional, that one dimension is quite good though. Every song revolves around one hook which Beck comes back to over and over. It works on tracks like E-Pro, Girl, Black Tambourine where he keeps it tight and moving, but by the second half of the record he starts to jam out and the tracks just go nowhere like on Farewell Ride and Broken Drum. He's got talent there just isn't enough for me to latch on to.

Gutsy move to put yourself into the category of musicians who only go by one name, like Madonna, Cher, and Prince. But here Beck is. Great for listening while shopping at a local food store when you’re inspired to try a new Balsamic vinaigrette. Beck is obviously a talented musician, and I couldn’t stop saying hell yes during a couple songs. But on the whole, I didn’t fully connect to the album as much as I wanted to or expected to. I was looking for the emergency exit for at least half the of the songs. The thing I admire about Beck, is his ability to change his voice and singing style for different songs, some being rap-style, some bluesy, and most are folk. Musically, each song usually has a main riff/hook that rides the entire song, and if it’s good, the song is great. Like my favourite on the record - Black Tambourine. However, if the hook is not good…well, then l want to dispose of it like a rental car. I won’t even fill it up with gas before returning it. Not a bad listen at all. E-Pro and Farewell Ride are bangers. But overall, I found something was just missing from the whole experience.
Overall I liked this album. Some funny lyrics and some fun musical moments.
I like Beck's work for the most the part. I just felt that this album was underwhelming.

I’m not blaming the album, but It took me almost twice as long to finish up closing at work because I was listening to this record, maybe both occurrences have no correlation whatsoever, but I’m just saying, it made me fuck up in many stupid stuff

Are there too many Beck albums? These jams are fine, if a bit lazy. I suppose it's classic gen-X - Odelay with the edges sanded down. But it's definitely no "Sea Change"

This album throws so many hard-panned street noises at you. I'm jumping at each of them while walking to work.
Some cool instrumentals here and there but Beck himself sounds weird with that Rap-centric delivery used throughout the album. Not bad by any means, just not great.
Idk it’s like, ok. Not great, sorta good, but ultimately ok in the grand scheme of things. I like Beck’s avant-garde lyrics and songwriting for sure, but that’s about all.

Beck Hanson is an interesting character. This album is vastly different from Odelay, the only other Beck album I am familiar with. It honestly is a solid expression of Beck but it's something I need to be in the mood for rather than seek out.
Wanted to like this but apparently you need to learn Spanglish first. Not the worst, definitely not the best
Fell asleep listening to the album, so I started it from the beginning. Whoops. I liked that not every song was the same genre of music. I thought the album was fine, but it won't be one that I would seek to listen to again either.
C'était bien ennuyeux comme il faut. J'ai vraiment pas compris ce que ça fait dans cette liste. Apparemment, Beck pèse dans le game, comme on dit. Alors peut-être qu'il a fait beaucoup de choses, mais sa musique n'a pas l'air d'être ce qu'il fait de mieux. C'est mou. Bon sang, que c'est mou ! Et c'est pas seulement mou, c'est aussi très répétitif et vide. Vraiment une chanson commence, tu te dis que c'est pas si mal, mais tu arrête de faire attention très vite, parce que fondamentalement, il ne se passe rien du tout. Et la plupart du temps, le manque d'énergie a un effet soporifique assez impressionnant. Et puis c'est même pas un peu travaillé. Un rythme nul, deux trois éléments musicaux minimalistes et de temps en temps des voix sans intérêt. Et tu répètes ça pendant trois minutes. Et surtout, tes chansons, tu ne les conclues pas : tu les arrêtes ! Bon, là j'exagère un peu, des fois, les fins sont un peu marquées, mais parfois, la chanson s'arrête juste à la fin d'une boucle, sans aucun build-up ni rien. Et une chose est sûre : c'est sur une chanson sans fin que s'arrête l'album. C'est bien simple, j'étais même pas sûr que l'album avait rebouclé tellement ça s'arrête sans vraiment se terminer. Nan mais vraiment, c'était quoi cette purge ? Qui écoute ça ? Et surtout : qui écoute ça et se dit que c'est génial, ça devrait finir dans les 1001 albums qu'il faut absolument écouter avant de mourir ? PS : je lis les commentaires et pardon ? Il y a plusieurs albums de ce type dans la liste ? Oooooh, ça commence à sentir mauvais, tout ça, je commence à avoir une longue liste d'albums sur lesquels je crains de tomber...
Nine studio albums in, Beck is still working the same junkyard arrangements, double-tracked vocals, lazy slacker melodies and hip-hop raps that could have been lifted from any of his previous albums. The sonics on track like "Hell Yes" have already previously been explored on albums like *Mellow Gold* and *Odelay", rendering them superfluous here.
It was a much more mature Beck and it was a lot less innovative Beck. It was more listenable but less memorable. That is to say, there was nothing offensive on this album but I can't say it was an album I needed to hear.

It’s so boring mannn
some decent tunes but boring
Hell Yes sounds like he's trying to do a grown up Where It's At. And it's terrible. Where It's At had groove, funk, uniqueness. Hell Yes has nothing. Go It Alone has that kind of roots rock/blues/soul feel that you can picture in a Coen brothers movie. And Farewell Ride has that chain gang/dry landscape feel that would fit also. But even though they are some of the only songs to standout to me, they don't standout enough to actually appear in a Coen brothers movie. I guess what I'm saying is... This was a bit of a nothing to me. Not bad, just a bit bland. I was a big Odelay fan in the day, and even when he tries to channel Odelay such as Hell Yes or Missing, it's like it's been ran through a dishwasher. Really, quite disappointing. I have since found out that Karen O was in Rental Car. Why include someone like her with such great emotional range only to have her go "la la la" and filter the absolute hell out of it? This makes it hard to rate. 3 stars for the actual songs. 2 stars for the disappointment, so 2.5 stars rounded down for the weird Karen O bit.

Ill be honest and say I didnt give this the most honest of listens but man do I really find Beck to be an absolute snoozer. The worst guy in the comic book store. The man arguing over 50 cents at the grocery store.
Still struggling to get into Beck. Very different genres and styles throughout the album, I appreciate the gusto to try new things.
It had some interesting ideas and at one point I could even hear a tune I could enjoy. Then it went sidewards. I love weird, but this dosen't use it well.

E-Pro sounds like a song for a really cool ad 😎 His voice reminded me of Rufus Wainwright and Car Seat Headrest at times. 😯💦 My favorites are Girls and Earthquake Weather. ☁️ I say favorites, but I don't see myself listening to them again. The album was pretty interesting in the beginning, but it got boring by the end. I don't love any songs, but I don't hate any either. I had a good time listening though, I closed my eyes and relaxed 😊 Thank you.

Beck tiene sin duda una de las discografías más interesantes de Estados Unidos. Sus primeros trabajos llenos de himnos de los '90s, y sus trabajos más acústicos entregan paisajes introspectivos apreciados por fans y críticos por igual. "Guero", por otra parte, no es uno de los mejores trabajos del ex-cientólogo. Si bien cuenta con el single E-Pro, y mezcla bien la electrónica con el folk (siendo pionero de lo que se conoce como Folktrónica), se siente como un poco más de lo mismo pero menos creativo. meh, nothing special in my personal opinion
A tired, spent Beck is better than the sad broken Beck of Sea Change, but Guero felt like a flailing, desperate re-tread then and it still does now. Paul and I had being making the microchip beats of Girl about five years before this. We were hardly at the cutting edge, but to be so far ahead of Beck was embarrassing for all of us. The harmonically static hits of Odelay - Devil's Haircut and The New Pollution - compensated for their statis with an absurd ebullience, but, here, Que'Onda Guero gets stuck in one spot without any such charm, eerily reminiscent in form of Jump Around. Earthquake Weather is likeable and nothing is bad - we have heard much worse - but, although Beck is acting like his mojo had been sitting there for him to reactivate, Guero is a staid, safe record by a man who still hasn't recovered from a love lost and just wants to be loved by us. 1.5 ‘I ache in the places where I used to play’ Leonard Cohen, Tower of Song You observed yesterday that criticising Coldplay was an exercise in futility, before I expended one of my longest reviews (I think) in criticising Coldplay. Surely you won’t say the same of Beck’s Guero. Another of my longest reviews - possibly my longest - was bestowed on Beck’s Sea Change. This was because there is limitless intrigue when an obviously great artist loses his way, but mainly because lots of other people like Sea Change and there is nothing I like better than explaining that, if not exactly ‘why’, lots of other people are wrong. Well Guero isn’t much good either. And it is an especially sad thing for me that, actually, not so many people take the contrary view. Where Sea Change has its true acolytes, painting it deep, moving, and beautiful - no one is inspired to say so much about Guero. It was even one of the few albums removed from subsequent editions of the 1001 albums book. It sold. It pleases. It has Jack White as a guest. You can see how the original editors made their mistake. So why should I get the whacking stick out, really? The long and short of it is that Beck, post-Sea Change, went in search of his Beckiness again and didn’t quite find it. What makes Odelay great (mercifully that is the other Beck album on this list so the Beck selections weren’t a complete fuck-up) is the sense throughout that Beck either doesn’t know or doesn’t care that we are listening. He is having fun; he is amusing himself. Ditto Mutations and Midnite Vultures. Guero doesn’t have that. Beck knows we’re listening now. He wants us to enjoy ourselves. He wants us to dance. He wants us to think the drums and guitars sound awesome. The mix is careful and, frankly, commercial. The lyrics are careful and contained - even making sense a lot of the time. Beck is very talented but it is a deeply self-conscious record. Beck is not having fun. That much is plain as day. I could have stopped at the Leonard Cohen quote, couldn’t I? 1.5/5
Appreciate the production and some guitar work but didn’t really connect with the vibe of the album
The Good: We get to learn a new word! The Bad: Changing the O for an A means dirty… The Ugly: Being a guero guarro… So I forgot an r… shit happens. Beck forgot an excellence, when creating this album. The real good news, however, is that this marks the last Beck album I need to listen to on this list. Odelay was enjoyable, this album, and the other one on the list, not so much. For me, it is starting to feel like Beck is more than a one-trick pony, he’s a shaman who’s been able to fool millions in believing him! Good for him. 2* to keep his hope alive...

Beck is a good musician, he's proved that plenty of times. I think he did more so on Sea Change than here because bleh, from Earthquake Weather to Scarecrow I eagerly clock out and that's a good chunk of the record. This album is very well mixed and well played and well informed and blah blah but it's not riveting to me. Second track was funny. There are good moments here and there, but I probably won't come back to this.
When people say they like alternative rock, I find they either lean more towards the 80s or 2000s. As for the 90s, there are parts of the 90s that lean either to the 80s or 2000s. And me, well, I lean towards the 80s. And this here is that 2000s alternative rock. You know, I swear every new rock band is alternative rock nowadays. It makes sense though... as the other big umbrella would be the more "classic" rock which isn't the thing anymore. Now it's all indie-alternative rock. If only rock today was more analog and less "perfect"/overproduced. Well, I can still listen to the more analog stuff, so it doesn't really matter, does it And this, this is 2000s alternative rock
It all sounds the same. Not great but no complaints. Kinda like the hallmark movies of the music world. Sounds like I’m in a soundtrack to charmed or something.

Beck is surely talented, but I don't really like his sound
this one was a huge disappointment. the first two songs were fantastic, the second one had my jaw on the floor. then we immediately start going downhill, i found most of the rest of the album to be extremely cringe. the way he speaks is so god damn annoying like he his a tiny mouth or something. i appreciate the sounds/beats he tries to incorporate in, i gave it a 2 instead of a 1 because each song really was unique and weird in a slightly good way. but he also put repetitive ass sound bits in some of the songs which really got on my nerves (Missing). also idk why people like Hell Yeah that might have been one of the worst songs i’ve ever heard like actually.
So, so dull. If you like it, great, every single song sounds the same, muddy and droning. 2.5/5
Previously unknown. It's fine but as a whole it's sort of boring and too similar.
I get why people like Beck, I just never have. Is he interesting? Yes. Is it very surprising he has hung on for so long and the amount of fans he has? Also yes. I just listen to him and find there weird isn't always good, it's often just weird. Add in that his voice isn't that good and it generally leads to mediocre music, at least to my ear. This album is more of the same, I am afraid, though there were a few bright spots. Hell Yes was kind of fun, certainly had some interesting parts to it. The lead track was good as well. Unfortunately, most of the rest of this was just no bueno.

I remember this band from when this album came out. It wasn't really my music back then and while it certainly is better this time around its still not a genre I choose to listen to when I listen to music. Its slow rhythms and almost whining singing doesn't really work for me.

Hai algún momento que ok, que vale, que ten un pase e se deixa escoitar, pero o conxunto prodúceme o mesmo entusiasmo que facer fotocopias, agardar por que a lavadora acabe de centrifugar ou facer cola nas caixas do supermercado. Non é un desastre (aínda que cousas coma 'Hell Yes' me animen a pensar o contrario), pero tampouco acho razóns para volver aquí nun futuro. Empezo a dubidar de que o dos 1.001 discos non sexa unha especie de estafa piramidal

Had one half-decent genx song back in the 90s with Loser. He was overrated then but more overrated (and irrelevant) now. I've tried many many times over the years to get into Beck but honestly, this album is another example of forgettable mess. Stick down a riff... repeat it for the whole song... drone vocals over the top. Broken Drum is the best track... cos it doesn't sound like Beck.

Almost every song sounds like a dam freestyle,I mean the album is a meh not even an okay it's just so boring i mean this whole album makes You wanna cut off your ears. Jag tycker om tanken på Beck mycket mer än jag tycker om Beck. Den eklektiska tanken, inte helt olik den som Damon Albarn praktiserat dom senaste 20 åren, är tilltalande men svårgenomförd har det visat sig. Jag har köpt flera av hans skivor genom åren men dom har mest samlat damm. Guero är inget undantag. Beck är aldrig dålig och ofta t.o.m. intressant och rätt rolig. Men han blir å andra sidan heller aldrig bra. Guero är en massa olika rätt roliga knasiga idéer men det blir aldrig något vettigt utav det. Klarar tvån med ett nödrop

Not what I was expecting , good but..
Very versatile and kinda well done in every genre that it touches but kind of a mixed back to me. Since nothing sounds even remotely the same it kinda lost me in the way. Yes there are some cool influences but nothing really sticks out in nearly an hour of runtime. Probably good for fans but not for me.

A bit meh
Certainly this album delivers on Beck's idiosyncratic sound, and shows him perfecting motifs and styles he helped to pioneer. Songs like Broken Drum stand out as Beck doing something different, but in his own way. But it is hard not to feel like it is a little too late for these soundscapes and mixed genre melodies to make a splash. At this point in time, Beck's sound was tried and true. Highly emulated throughout the late 90s and early oughts. We're left here with an album capstone-ing those sounds all the while Indie music was cascading onto the scene and changing the way pop and rock were being viewed. Add to this that Beck's sounds, though still his own and still experimental, were not breaching the Avante Garde anymore. Bands like Sufjan Stevens, Bright Eyes, Animal Collective, Sigur Ros, Spoon, The Decemberists, were all experimenting in new ways that would change music for the next 10 years. Guero is certainly worth a listen for Beck fans, but I am not sure it is deserving of taking the place of many other albums from 2005.

I’m not sure this needs to be on the list. It’s enjoyable enough, but it’s kind of standard issue Beck (which is good, don’t get me wrong). I can’t help but feel that there may be overlooked worthier contenders. Janet Jackson, say?

This list is losing cred by the day.
It’s not a bad record exactly (well...) but the expectations for this were high coming off a stellar run AND reuniting with the Odelay production duo. Alas, where Beck previously succeeded using vintage sounds and older styles, but skewed through his own unique prism, this just sounded kinda tired and played out. The sister album/follow-up The Information at the very least has a more compelling aesthetic, likewise the thrifty Modern Guilt, but Guero was confirmation that Beck had lost whatever made him special.
This album doesn't really change my opinion of Beck that much, although I did find a couple tracks that I liked. Not awful, but won't add it to my personal collection.
Drôle qu’il ait intitulé son album Guero (qui désigne les gens à la peau claire au Mexique, entre péjoratif et affectif selon les usages). J’aime déjà un peu plus que son premier album Odelay qui m’avait clairement ennuyée, là au moins on a un peu plus de dynamisme instrumental. Part de rien, construction progressive du son dans Missing qui est vraiment cool. hey I know e-pro and que onde guero is intriguing it's all a lot of unconventional things like dj sounds and less American more international sounds in some and samples and yeah interesting not really my type but the sounds were something I got bored at the end kinda repetitive, not really intriguing to me, doesn't make me feel anything feels empty first two were best ones
Best Song: Que'Onda Guero. It was a real funky beat that complimented Beck's weird delivery. Worst Song: Farewell Ride. An overly moody yeehaw song about horses with the appropriate number of eyes. Overall: This is a little bit better than the other Beck I've been offered, but I'm still not much of a fan. There's something grating about this monotone, disaffected quality that pervades all of his vocals. I listen to music to get affected. Give me something to feel for chrissake.
Just Beck being Beck. Some catchy stuff here but he really doesn’t have anything noteworthy to say. He probably would have been a better producer than songwriter.

I thought the vibes would be more eclectic than it finnaly was, hoped more of that 8 bit keyboards in the intro of Girl sprinkled in more places. E-Pro is a banger and a Rockband classic. The riff of Send a Message to Her(which is a bonus track, didnt realized when I first heard the album) sounds like the one of Devils Haircut in a different key. I mean, its a good album, but its not something that I would say is worthy of a 1001 must listen album before you die list (Odelay and Sea Change would be my only picks) 2/5

This was an odd listen. There was one, maybe two track(s) at the beginning of the album with a slightly heavier guitar element that was enjoyable, but then it got fully into the swing of a variety-packed album but nothing really grabbed me. I generally found most songs quite boring so the variety didn’t really help, and if anything meant I couldn’t really get into the swing of it. Maybe I need to give it another try some time but I can’t see myself going to much effort to.
It's very well produced, upbeat, and easy listening. It just has very little depth. It's a mastery in making a wide variety of pleasant noises but there is no emotion in this album. Included within the hodgepodge of genres is some very unconvincing "white middle class guy does hip-hop" which really doesn't land at all. No edge, no grit, no heart. All technicality and no artistry.

Beck delivers another smorgasbord of random flavours which don’t work together. Love the ambition, hate the results. Some songs work better than others, but this is often the less interesting ones. And when he raps it’s the worst. Broken Drum stands out positively, delivering something more reflective, in the style I enjoy on Morning Phase.
Another high 2 for Beck for me, more coherent than Odelay but still not to my taste

Beck has always been a bit of a letdown for me. I want to like his stuff, but it always seems a little too polished and commercial for what he presents.
Beck is in love with musical sounding gimmicks more than he’s in love with making great music. There are some songs on this album where if he would have edited the junk noise, then the songs would have really sung. I’d like to see him step out of his comfort zone and see what he’s capable of.

I’ve always liked that Sun-eyed Girl song. Beck has some solid standalone songs. But, like all of his other albums, my interest fades out over the span. I always thought he was just ok, and Guero embodies that trend.

I’m greatly interested in the albums which have had their “must-listen” status revoked, and this time it’s Beck who’s up on the chopping block. I remember liking “Loser” a few years back, though I’ve never actually sat down and listened to one of his albums. He’s an interesting character from what I recall, though I don’t remember him being much of an influential or massively successful figure – just someone who is well-respected. Oh well, onto the music. Yeah, not bad! An interesting album – there's a bit going on here, though it doesn’t go all the way in hooking me and loses me heavily during the second half. Still, it’s fun for what it is. “E-Pro” is a good opener. I’m not normally a fan of the lo-fi, abrasive guitar sound, yet it works quite well here, and I like the general punchiness of the music. “Que’ Onda Guero” is an even better follow-up. The sampling is quite interesting, as well as the unique flow that the song has. I dig the trip-hop percussion quite a bit as well. “Broken Drum” ain’t half bad. The piano is pretty good, and I like the spacy, reverberated atmosphere. Why was this removed? I’ll consult the book for why it was in here in the first place. A whole lot of nothing beyond how experimental this album is. Moving over to Wikipedia reveals that this is Beck’s best-selling album and was well received at the time. Ehh. Uhmm. Yeah, I’d probably save this album from destruction. I have a limited supply of replacement albums, and this album was better than a good number of the one’s I’ve heard through this list. Congrats, Guero, you're saved.
Another artist this boomer has been (blissfully?) unaware of. Most of it was ok, just not a fan of hiphop. Didn't give it close attention, pressed for time. But then afterwards, Spotify threw up Elevator Music, which i liked.
Well it's on my list of 1001 albums I don't need to listen to again before I die. Meh.

So right now I assume Beck has no less than all his albums on the list. I know this based on what my friends and I have gotten. What weird is none of us have got a good beck album. So I wager all of his stuff is on here because of this. If this list doesn't give me the best beck album I'm gonna be pissed I listened to all of these lame one. One foot in the grave is his best.

Every time I listen to a Beck album, I have the same contradictory feelings : he’s a very talented artist, and yet his music feels emotionless, and bores me after a few songs. He’s clearly a creative and curious mind, with an interesting "let’s do music with everything we can put our hands on" ethos. But I feel this attitude kind of works against him, because each of his records is a melting pot of a little bit of everything, yet fails to achieve a clear identity. This album is a perfect example. It isn’t bad, it’s well executed – but it’s all over the place, and in the end I’m left wondering what it was all about ; no song stands out, and I didn’t find any kind of passion anywhere. I’ve come to the conclusion that Beck is a music nerd who sees music as a technical challenge. He just wants to have fun, but doesn’t necessarily think about his public. Listening to Guero felt like watching someone else build a model plane or a Lego set : everything clicks right into place, the end result is faultless, but ultimately you’re not the one having fun.
Alternative and especially experimental are just really not for me. Nothing is going on in these lyrics.
Started out strong, and I like other Beck stuff, but it petered out. Bit too avant-garde for a first time listen (says the Radiohead fan).

This was okay. I have a hard time listening to a Beck album because they're usually kind of directionless and un-unified. And that holds true for Guero, a mixed bag of different songs built with varying beats, instruments, vocal effects, etc. The experimentation is neat, but I don't find any of it compelling to the point of revisiting. I think a big reason for this is Beck's approach to lyrics, which are kind of nonsensical and meandering.
The songs weren't necessarily bad, they were just annoyingly boring. Each song was just a simple beat or riff that carried on for 4 minutes and provided almost nothing exciting to listen to.

Not terrible. Not my style but can see how some people might like it. Very their style. Too many vocables. Earthquake Weather was almost quite good. The instrumental was interesting but I find the band pretty boring. Hell Yes was decent. This was overly repetitive and I didn’t care for it. It wasn’t only repetitive in each song but between songs.
5.5/10 Favorite Track: “E-Pro” Guero wants to be a party, but half the guests never showed up. It throws together rock, hip hop, and flashes of Latin flavor with Beck’s usual genre-blending style, but the energy feels more recycled than inspired. “E-Pro” kicks things off with a strong start, but most of what follows lacks any sort of flavor. There are fun moments, but the album leans too heavily on style over substance. It coasts by not doing much and sounds safe where it should be strange. As my second Beck album, I’m not surprised I don’t like it that much. It is listenable, but never essential.

I think it's safe to say that Beck as an artist is pretty damn good. He's capable of turning out a couple of really good songs every album. Needless to say, there's a lot of filler here too. 2 stars for the two ultra catchy songs.

Not my favourite beck style, almost a bit gimmicky
I was interrupted partway through the elbum and honestly dreaded going back to finish it. There are a few tracks that were alright, but overall this whole album felt to me as a disjointed, chaotic and aimless mess of disparate songs, half of which felt like lacking any semblance of heart whatsoever. Maybe it's just not my vibe or I didn't get some overarching ideas to the album that would have made it worth it. I made it through, but this was very much not for me.

"Can we have nirvana?" "We have Nirvana at home!" Jokes aside, his voice has a less raspy and smoother Kurt Cobain quality and the music is decent but nothing sticks with me. Feels like he is a defended one hit wonder because the only track i ever remember by him is "Loser". Not bad but not that special in my opinion

Часом складається враження, що гурт намагався на ньому повернутись до своєї первинної форми, намагаючись повторити минулу «магію» влучного поєднання хіп хоп бітів із бруднуватим альтернативним/слакер роком. На відміну від вищезгаданого Odelay, тут все пішло не по плану, і замість тонкого поєднання жанрів, що тримаються між собою завдяки виключному відчуттю мелодії - вийшла незрозуміла каша, що слугує «фоном» для більш сучасного на той час інді-року. Сьогодні я слухав цей альбом напевно що рази три, щиро дивуючись кожен раз: чому він ніяк не може «спрацювати». І певно, що причиною чому та сама «формула» не спрацювала - стало саме слідування цій самій формулі, «усвідомлене» бажання зробити «все як слід». Але при цьому, майже повністю загубити концепцію та шарм у гонитві за формою. P.S: Не дарма цей альбом виключено із нового видання «1001 albums you must hear before you die». Я б також їм пожертвував не задумуючись.

Acho incrível como o Beck faz os discos mais esquecíveis possíveis, sendo que tem tudo pra eu gostar. Sempre junta umas colaborações com gente maneira, tem músicas com ideias interessantes, e nesse até mesmo dedicatória ao Elliott Smith, que deveria me fazer gostar bem mais do disco. Ainda assim, tenho certeza que em menos de uma semana esquecerei de mais um disco dele.

The first half of this album is uninteresting. The second half is some mildly interesting early 2000's rock. Overall, do I think this needs to be here? No....it's not the worst addition to this list but it also isn't a critical one.
I certainly respect Beck but I'm not sure why he always appears on this list. Very talented, but I don't find his music particularly incredible to warrant multiple albums on this list, much less this boring one. 5/10.

pretty mid album imo. There 's probably lots of deep history that would make me enjoy this album but I didn't read into this - so take my review with a grain of salt. I just wanted to skip the songs but I pushed through.. They weren't bad songs but I didn't personally enjoy them.
This is a surprise. I mean Beck is great but I wouldn’t put him on such a list. The choice of album is kind of a surprise as well. I could’ve seen any album prior to this one really. This has all the range of a Beck album. Beck’s talky, almost rapping, vocals. Some distorted riffs, some acoustic guitar, some scratchy beats, some all around quirkiness. It’s all pretty cool and everything but I wouldn’t say it’s particularly notable. Two stars.

It could just be that I was tired and irritated while listening to this but I found it tiresome and irritating. A shame, because I have heard and liked a few of Beck's songs before and I liked them - Loser and Time Bomb, for example. The bluesy Go It Alone stood out but I am not sure if I actually like it, or if I just like them more than the surrounding tracks. However it is the beginning of an uptick in insteresting songs, the cowboyish Farewell Ride and the Rental Car which I liked musically. There were moments I liked, but overall underwhelming.

No. Played E-pro (itself 3-3.5, mostly from familiarity) and skipped halfway through the rest and closed it before the final two. Not an album I would put back on for a reconsideration.
