Reviews (page 11 of 12)
Once is probably enough. Might end up as a 2. Some nice tracks, but overall I don’t like it.
First couple of tracks are bangers. The rest all sounds the same.
This is what you would expect from a Beck album. I was unfamiliar with this album except for the single(s). All in all this is ok.
Beck goes back to his roots - but I can't see why he would do that. An unsatisfying retread of his earlier work, without the sly wit and sense of new creation that was there
Not for me. Sounds good though.
Kind of generic sounding and boring.
meh
Ok album, not for me. 4.6/10
This was an odd listen. There was one, maybe two track(s) at the beginning of the album with a slightly heavier guitar element that was enjoyable, but then it got fully into the swing of a variety-packed album but nothing really grabbed me. I generally found most songs quite boring so the variety didn’t really help, and if anything meant I couldn’t really get into the swing of it. Maybe I need to give it another try some time but I can’t see myself going to much effort to.
It's very well produced, upbeat, and easy listening. It just has very little depth. It's a mastery in making a wide variety of pleasant noises but there is no emotion in this album. Included within the hodgepodge of genres is some very unconvincing "white middle class guy does hip-hop" which really doesn't land at all. No edge, no grit, no heart. All technicality and no artistry.
in theory it feels like this should be interesting but it just isn’t. like the combo of electronic and acoustic music going on should be pretty cool but i was never excited for a second. just incredibly bland throughout
Beck delivers another smorgasbord of random flavours which don’t work together. Love the ambition, hate the results. Some songs work better than others, but this is often the less interesting ones. And when he raps it’s the worst. Broken Drum stands out positively, delivering something more reflective, in the style I enjoy on Morning Phase.
Another high 2 for Beck for me, more coherent than Odelay but still not to my taste
Very particular vibe
bit boring, couldn't wait for it to end
Idk man, Beck is a weird one for me. Interesting music but somehow it largely ends up falling flat for me. Feel like it lacks soul or something, idk. Broken Drum was cool.
Didn’t do much for me. I appreciate Beck’s effort to try something different, but it just wasn’t my cup of tea. It’s nice to experiment, but this one misses the mark...
Not bad.
Nice to listen to something different but i probably wouldn’t listen again.
Beck has always been a bit of a letdown for me. I want to like his stuff, but it always seems a little too polished and commercial for what he presents.
Beck is in love with musical sounding gimmicks more than he’s in love with making great music. There are some songs on this album where if he would have edited the junk noise, then the songs would have really sung. I’d like to see him step out of his comfort zone and see what he’s capable of.
Prob weakest album I git so far, hes much better when hes a loser baby
I’ve always liked that Sun-eyed Girl song. Beck has some solid standalone songs. But, like all of his other albums, my interest fades out over the span. I always thought he was just ok, and Guero embodies that trend.
Removed Album #15 (List: https://pastebin.com/cSThNiK9) Oh, joy. Another wunnadeez. I’m greatly interested in the albums which have had their “must-listen” status revoked, and this time it’s Beck who’s up on the chopping block. I remember liking “Loser” a few years back, though I’ve never actually sat down and listened to one of his albums. He’s an interesting character from what I recall, though I don’t remember him being much of an influential or massively successful figure – just someone who is well-respected. Oh well, onto the music. Yeah, not bad! An interesting album – there's a bit going on here, though it doesn’t go all the way in hooking me and loses me heavily during the second half. Still, it’s fun for what it is. “E-Pro” is a good opener. I’m not normally a fan of the lo-fi, abrasive guitar sound, yet it works quite well here, and I like the general punchiness of the music. “Que’ Onda Guero” is an even better follow-up. The sampling is quite interesting, as well as the unique flow that the song has. I dig the trip-hop percussion quite a bit as well. “Broken Drum” ain’t half bad. The piano is pretty good, and I like the spacy, reverberated atmosphere. Why was this removed? I’ll consult the book for why it was in here in the first place. A whole lot of nothing beyond how experimental this album is. Moving over to Wikipedia reveals that this is Beck’s best-selling album and was well received at the time. Ehh. Uhmm. Yeah, I’d probably save this album from destruction. I have a limited supply of replacement albums, and this album was better than a good number of the one’s I’ve heard through this list. Congrats, Guero, you're saved.
Another artist this boomer has been (blissfully?) unaware of. Most of it was ok, just not a fan of hiphop. Didn't give it close attention, pressed for time. But then afterwards, Spotify threw up Elevator Music, which i liked.
Well it's on my list of 1001 albums I don't need to listen to again before I die. Meh.
Oh shit, it's that guy from Futurama!
So right now I assume Beck has no less than all his albums on the list. I know this based on what my friends and I have gotten. What weird is none of us have got a good beck album. So I wager all of his stuff is on here because of this. If this list doesn't give me the best beck album I'm gonna be pissed I listened to all of these lame one. One foot in the grave is his best.
Boring
Eh…..
Every time I listen to a Beck album, I have the same contradictory feelings : he’s a very talented artist, and yet his music feels emotionless, and bores me after a few songs. He’s clearly a creative and curious mind, with an interesting "let’s do music with everything we can put our hands on" ethos. But I feel this attitude kind of works against him, because each of his records is a melting pot of a little bit of everything, yet fails to achieve a clear identity. This album is a perfect example. It isn’t bad, it’s well executed – but it’s all over the place, and in the end I’m left wondering what it was all about ; no song stands out, and I didn’t find any kind of passion anywhere. I’ve come to the conclusion that Beck is a music nerd who sees music as a technical challenge. He just wants to have fun, but doesn’t necessarily think about his public. Listening to Guero felt like watching someone else build a model plane or a Lego set : everything clicks right into place, the end result is faultless, but ultimately you’re not the one having fun.
Alternative and especially experimental are just really not for me. Nothing is going on in these lyrics.
Started out strong, and I like other Beck stuff, but it petered out. Bit too avant-garde for a first time listen (says the Radiohead fan).
2.5
literally didnt think of any song
I don’t hate this but it does feel like one big song. Chill on a background but otherwise pretty run at the mill stuff
ok
Nostalghia …. Wow lol. In retrospect not very good, becomes rather arduous to listen to. Takes a long time to get through.
this was very hit and miss for me
This was okay. I have a hard time listening to a Beck album because they're usually kind of directionless and un-unified. And that holds true for Guero, a mixed bag of different songs built with varying beats, instruments, vocal effects, etc. The experimentation is neat, but I don't find any of it compelling to the point of revisiting. I think a big reason for this is Beck's approach to lyrics, which are kind of nonsensical and meandering.
The songs weren't necessarily bad, they were just annoyingly boring. Each song was just a simple beat or riff that carried on for 4 minutes and provided almost nothing exciting to listen to.
Not terrible. Not my style but can see how some people might like it. Very their style. Too many vocables. Earthquake Weather was almost quite good. The instrumental was interesting but I find the band pretty boring. Hell Yes was decent. Best Song - Broken Drum Worst Song - Missing Added to Liked Songs - Black Tambourine, Broken Drum, Scarecrow, Go it Alone, Emergency Exit
Fun sounds and definitely different than what I usually listen to. Only knew one song prior to listening but still no
This was overly repetitive and I didn’t care for it. It wasn’t only repetitive in each song but between songs.
5.5/10 Favorite Track: “E-Pro” Guero wants to be a party, but half the guests never showed up. It throws together rock, hip hop, and flashes of Latin flavor with Beck’s usual genre-blending style, but the energy feels more recycled than inspired. “E-Pro” kicks things off with a strong start, but most of what follows lacks any sort of flavor. There are fun moments, but the album leans too heavily on style over substance. It coasts by not doing much and sounds safe where it should be strange. As my second Beck album, I’m not surprised I don’t like it that much. It is listenable, but never essential.
annoying it pissed me off a bit
It’s an alright album but not really my preferred music.
Eigenlijk 2.5..
Lowkey sad I didn’t like this much considering how much I love odelay
Didn’t finish. It was but ok
it was fine
Really not my style
2 not for me. Parts I was intrigued by though.
Alright, I'm sick of Beck. Maybe I rated his previous record here a little too kindly, or I'm just entirely not in the mood for what sounds like 00's montage music.
I feel very meh about this one. I like the first few songs, especially E-Pro and Qué Onda Guero, but then it just kinda drones on and I don't get much out of it after that.
I mean… I wanted to connect with it… and I thought it was fine…. But I was hoping for more 5/10
Soooo whatever, boring and who cares
I think it's safe to say that Beck as an artist is pretty damn good. He's capable of turning out a couple of really good songs every album. Needless to say, there's a lot of filler here too. 2 stars for the two ultra catchy songs.
meh
Not my favourite beck style, almost a bit gimmicky
I was interrupted partway through the elbum and honestly dreaded going back to finish it. There are a few tracks that were alright, but overall this whole album felt to me as a disjointed, chaotic and aimless mess of disparate songs, half of which felt like lacking any semblance of heart whatsoever. Maybe it's just not my vibe or I didn't get some overarching ideas to the album that would have made it worth it. I made it through, but this was very much not for me.
Strasznie dziwne. Niby spoko ale jakieś takie niespójne i no dziwne. 2/5.
Tries too hard to be off-beat, lands on annoying
"Can we have nirvana?" "We have Nirvana at home!" Jokes aside, his voice has a less raspy and smoother Kurt Cobain quality and the music is decent but nothing sticks with me. Feels like he is a defended one hit wonder because the only track i ever remember by him is "Loser". Not bad but not that special in my opinion
Fine album. But not really my vibe. Never was really. Especially as this was prime art school days
Made me want to put a pencil in my ear and keep pushing. Sometimes derivative, often times aggravating, but never engaging
P.S: Не дарма цей альбом виключено із нового видання «1001 albums you must hear before you die».
Bored. Pretty much forgot it.
Jesus, this list loves Beck.
Other than E-Pro and another song, this album is a little too quirky pop rock for me.
its really not my cup of tea acc. but i can see the vision..
😴
😴
If 2005 were music, it would be this. Interesting and complex, but not for me.
Meh
suits. 2/5 funky. experimental.
Not Becks finest hour a few good tracks but he’s trying too hard to out Beck himself
Not feeling this at all, have a 2 you Scientologist weirdo
His stuff felt tired in the late 90s, tbh. I recognize a couple of these tracks but this all seems very unnecessary to me and an odd addition to this list.
This is inoffensive stuff, what you put on to listen when you have a group round with very different musical tastes. It wouldn't upset anyone. It's ok.
Rekla bih neki prosjek, ali ipak malo niže jer me nije izulo. 2/5, 4.5/10
Beck makes another musical run on sentence While there's some good things going on it just blurs together with nothing about the album to make anything stand out in any way
The first half of this album is uninteresting. The second half is some mildly interesting early 2000's rock. Overall, do I think this needs to be here? No....it's not the worst addition to this list but it also isn't a critical one.
I certainly respect Beck but I'm not sure why he always appears on this list. Very talented, but I don't find his music particularly incredible to warrant multiple albums on this list, much less this boring one. 5/10.
Didn’t fw this at all. Maybe I’m having a bad day at work but god…
1. pro - 2 2. guero - 1.5 3. girl - 0 4. mizzing - 1.5 5. black - 1.5 6. uueather - 1.5 7. hell - 1 8. drum - 1.5 9. crouu - 1 10. alone - 2 11. ride - 1.5 12. rental - 1 13. ezit - 1.5
I’m not a huge Beck person. His music is alright. It’s surprising this is at least his second album on here.
A fine Beck album...nothing too special. Couple of tunes I knew, of the rest, meh.
alright album, didnt find it much interesting.
pretty mid album imo. There 's probably lots of deep history that would make me enjoy this album but I didn't read into this - so take my review with a grain of salt. I just wanted to skip the songs but I pushed through.. They weren't bad songs but I didn't personally enjoy them.
This is a surprise. I mean Beck is great but I wouldn’t put him on such a list. The choice of album is kind of a surprise as well. I could’ve seen any album prior to this one really. This has all the range of a Beck album. Beck’s talky, almost rapping, vocals. Some distorted riffs, some acoustic guitar, some scratchy beats, some all around quirkiness. It’s all pretty cool and everything but I wouldn’t say it’s particularly notable. Two stars.
2/5
I love the rhythms of Beck. One of the more original artists of the 2000s. I was already familiar with this album, nice to hear it again!
A couple of interesting tracks but didn’t really appeal to me
Real “got in on the first year of eligibility and then didn’t make it into the later editions” energy here (❤️: E-Pro, Girl, Broken Drum)
There are some very good songs on here but a lot of it is also forgettable
It could just be that I was tired and irritated while listening to this but I found it tiresome and irritating. A shame, because I have heard and liked a few of Beck's songs before and I liked them - Loser and Time Bomb, for example. The bluesy Go It Alone stood out but I am not sure if I actually like it, or if I just like them more than the surrounding tracks. However it is the beginning of an uptick in insteresting songs, the cowboyish Farewell Ride and the Rental Car which I liked musically. There were moments I liked, but overall underwhelming.
ehh, so so.
I think I should like Beck more than I do, but there's something wears on me when listening to an entire album.
Gar nöd gwüsst was mich da erwarted.
No. Played E-pro (itself 3-3.5, mostly from familiarity) and skipped halfway through the rest and closed it before the final two. Not an album I would put back on for a reconsideration.
Decent Beck album. E-Pro is probably the best song on here. 1001 album worthy: No - 31/56
Not bad but not really my listening style.
i hate to give it two stars but i guess this is just not my thing i never really listened to beck !! i absolutely loved “everybody’s gotta learn sometimes” after watching eternal sunshine though & everyone knows loser ofc thats a banger song
did not like - long, boring, grating
very unique sounds especially from 2005 but towards the end of it, i just found myself feeling bored. i probably wont revisit this album
Thought I might like it but was blah.
It was okay ...
Surprising amount of 90’s hip-hop influence, and some Latin, little country. Never really cared for his voice, but I respect this album.
Second try with Beck—went a tiny bit better than Odelay! Maybe we'll figure it out with Sea Change.
This is #day127 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and... it just happens to be December 13th, Friday. I guess I just don't like Beck. The mix of blues, hip-hop, alternative rock, and whatever else doesn't do it for me. And the vocals... I feel like I'm hearing Bryan Adams gasping for air. There are still two more albums from him on this list, which begs the question: Why would anyone include 3 albums from this guy? You absolutely don't have to listen to Beck before you die. Giving this a 2 out of 5. Looking forward to #day128.
I def don’t get the beck hype. This is just not that interesting to me. Que ‘onda guero caught my attention a bit but the rest, idk man I just listened to it an hour ago and can’t really remember much.
I dunno, din't touch me. Maybe I should try once again. Very inconsistent style and energy of a CD for me.
Fairly interesting to listen to, purely due to it being experimental and a bit off the beaten path. But the uniqueness isn't enough for me to really enjoy it
Still can't get into Beck, though I could make it through this album unlike the other I've encountered on this list so far. 2/5
Doesn't blow my socks off. I respect what he's trying to do with lo-fi and spanning genres but I can't think of an occasion where I'd want to listen to this again. The first line of any Beck write up highlights that he's a native Angeleno. Maybe this music goes over well at Scientology listening parties.
I really enjoyed the first 3 songs. Felt like it fell off a cliff after that. Read Jack White played bass on a track.
And exactly why does this band belong on this list? I want to meet the editors. I feel like after album 100 they just compiled a list of random records. This is not bad but it's most definitely not good.
Did not finish. Seemed bland. Probably deserves another shake.
Not my kind of music; a lot of noises that generally do not harmonize with each other. Sounds a lot like Franz Ferdinand but in more bizarre and messy way.
Not gonna sugarcoat it, this is a bunch of nothing. There's already two very good Beck albums on the list, no point in having this one. It's way too safe and boring.
Just Boring, probably better on more listens.
Beck is a strange listen for me. I think he has some cool and unique music, but it's the kind of music I wouldn't have on a playlist to listen over and over again. I thought my listens were fine and there was nothing that made me ask wtf, but nothing that made want to say "Hey Mindy, check out this song". I did recognize E-Pro from radio plays and there something about Earthquake Weather that stood out from the rest of the album, but pretty much right down the middle for me. 2.5
Enough Beck already!!!!!
Always found beck to be pretty fucking corny. Like hip hop for rich white liberals who vote blue but lock their doors when driving through the hood.
Comes and goes without leaving much of an impression. Sounds a lot like the Beck I remember from the 90s: shaggy alt-rock guitars combined with hip hop beats, slacker vocals sliding between singing and rapping in his signature playful drowsy delivery, some cool production (sounds like Outkast sometimes) and lots of ideas including some fun riffs and lots of swirling sounds. But none of it really stands out, seems like mostly filler and doesn't advance much on the what he'd already accomplished on earlier albums. Not bad, but not essential listening. Favorites: Que' Onda Guero, Girl
Two memorable times in my adolescence an album came out that I hated so bad it cast a negative reflection backwards onto the artist for me for all time and I quit listening to them forever. One was ‘good news for people who love bad news’ and the other one was guero. Upon revisiting: was it worth all that negativity? Not really. Do I like it? No.
Yeah but it lacked coherence I felt different styles in the same album, no identity
It was ok. So difficult to say when it’s not your genre. But it felt like Muzak to me. Appreciated the slower songs more.
Something about Beck just bores me. I can't put my finger on it but it just feels kind of all over the place without leaving any lasting impact.
There are a handful of good songs but for most I’d feel like the song had gone on for ages, check how long it was, and see that it’d only been 2 or 3 minutes. Just bleh.
Go It Alone //
Perfectly listenable, but not something I will personally listen to.
Not a massive fan of Beck. Was hard to get through this album when you arent a fan. But not the worst album I have ever heard.
Album starts well enough. Then gets weird. Then gets annoying. This isn’t even the best Beck album, let alone a top 1000.
This is too experimental for my tastes. Go It Alone probably best track Scarecrow slaps tho, what a nice bass line
Outside of a few hit singles, I've never been all that interested in Beck. And with this record, the same feeling holds true. For me, a lot of his music feels like meandering alternative rock that just doesn't go anywhere. Personally, this record was just OK. Favorite track: Black Drum
Someone tell Ross Gellar to step away from the keyboard. I think there was potential from Broken Drum for a couple of songs. There are other Beck projects that I like but this isn’t one of them. *Random lazer effect*
2.5, väsähdin tähän loppua kohden.
Beck is cheesy as heck and this album is pretty boring after the first few songs
My second Beck album this week! Still not that into Beck, but still not sure why. This album sounded slightly more “mature”, but so what? What am I supposed to do with a slightly more mature piece of toast?
I really enjoyed some tracks but the overall feeling of this being made for a wide audience didn’t escape me through the songs. Didn’t feel genuine
I hate Beck. Also this album felt like it never ended, 3 minutes felt like 6 and 4 minutes felt like 8.
coworker music
Never listening to this album again. It wasn't unlistenable, but Jesus Christ was is boring. I couldn't tell when one song ended and another begun, it all sounded the same. Nearly an hour of repeating guitar chords and barely hearable harmonica. This shit is just plain as - I wanted it to end by the time I got to Farewell Ride. Very soulless and uninspired album. I can't believe I put up with this for an hour.
Good opening track, I have only heard a few Beck songs before and I wasn’t particularly keen on them but this is groovy. Track 2 feels kinda racist but is undeniably groovy. The production and sound mixing is pretty competent and this song is pretty fun. Track 3 is a bit repetitive, perfectly cromulent song but not my bag. Tracks 4, 5 and 6 made me realise I probably should have put this album on in the lounge room and had a coffee instead of listening to this on a stroll. The music here is fine I’m just having a tough time really meshing with it. Track 7 more of the same, good production value but realising that Beck maybe isn’t for me. Track 8 a welcome surprise, I enjoyed this song. Gave up on tracking and doing a song by song for this album. Beck sounds as bored performing this music as I was listening to it. I’m sure there’s an audience for this but it’s not me.
Guero is mostly held up by it's incredible opener E-Pro. If more songs sounded like E-Pro then this album would be way better, but it's not. E-Pro is energizing, instantly grabbing you with it's bombastic drums and devil-may-care vocal delivery on the verses. The rest of the album is standard Beck songs, which are somewhat tedious. I generally think Beck is overrated with occasional moments of brilliance.
I felt as apathetic listening as Beck did making this. music: hated. (⌐■_■)
Beck 📉📉📉 When this one was new, I listened to it a lot. Either it’s aged badly, or I have. Just something mechanical and lifeless about it, can’t quite put my finger on it.
For people who have one, I rather suspect that their favourite Beck album is inseparably entwined with their biographical highs. (Mine is Sea Change). This feels like Mellow Gold Redux. Not really for me.
Not quite my taste
Not mine
Guero is among my least favorite albums by Beck-- and I love Beck. But I specifically like the quality of Beck to evoke emotion. Guero is pretty skin deep, feels lighter and more self aggrandizing than many of his albums that I prefer. Songs like Earthquake Weather really rub me the wrong way. Beck here is like a person where you know from experience they have the capacity to be so kind and special but they choose to ruin it by being an a-hole, and fail to live up to their potential. Probably the only album I would 2 star by Beck.
I like a lot of his stuff. But not this one so much. He doesn’t feel committed to the sound du jour.
I like E-pro, it reminds me of montages in a movie where the main character works toward a project with newfound motivation. Girl also provides movie montage but this time of two people doing fun summer things together like at a fair or something, the guy realizing he’s falling in love with the girl at the end. Black Tambourine is kind of nice, but so far E-pro is the only song I actually like. I don’t think this album is for me. I don’t even want to finish it. They kinda remind me of Radiohead but I like Radiohead more. Finishing this album is a pain, but based on the beginning I have hopes for Scarecrow. I’m abandoning ship. I don’t see why this is an album I must listen to because I would rather not.
Couldn’t get into it.
2 Stars. (5/15)
I see no reason for the inclusion of this album. Beck does the same things he did ten years earlier but it doesn’t feel fresh anymore. This batch of detached musings over pretty ok break beats are on the wrong side of the millennium shift.
Meh
4/10 - The songs were all kind of weird. I did not enjoy most of the songs. The only one that was kind of enjoyable was girl. Worse than the other Beck album.
This is not a Beck album that I like.
I don’t get the Beck hype. It was alright but not worth of the book to be honest.
Who legitimately decides to put on a Beck album? This was very forgettable to me
Not my style
Earthquake weather IS a bop. As a whole it doesn’t excite me though.
This has some grooves but beyond two or three songs nothing sticks and it was actually tough to get through
Beck is an artist I've heard a lot about - so I was eager to jump into this album. I find that this album marinates in its eclecticism and borders parody at points, kind of like Ween, with these throwbacky melodic angles drawing from the worlds of hip-hop and alternative rock. The instrumentals are solid here, I especially love the rivetting layers on the jittery and bassy 'Hell Yes'. I also love the wall of crashing guitars driving the soothing melody on 'Broken Drum', easily my favorite song here. My biggest issue is Beck's one-note and lowkey vocals on many of these songs. While they complement the spacious trip-hop beats on some of these songs, they consequently bog them down. As a result, I'd be lying if I said I was engaged throughout the entirety of this album's relatively modest runtime. There's most certainly a notable charm present on this album - one that's undeniably cool, at times smokey, and very unique sounding. But by the end, I was left wishing it had something more punchy or memorable to offer. For my taste - I found this thing almost too laid-back.
Some instrumental bits I ended up liking, I have learned I don't like Beck though. We'll see if his next albums on this list change anything. Will I listen to again: 0%
I thought this was gonna be jaz but it was a plesant suprise That was rough Go it alone saved it 2
Bought three iPods and a cardigan from the GAP as a result of this boring ass record
Rock, Sprechgesang, 2005 -> 2
Yeah Guero is a bit dull really, isn't it? Throws in occasionally interesting hooks or beats that momentarily make you pay attention but otherwise it's just a bland piece of nothingness. Not even a very interesting singer either, 2.
Not for me, this. Girl probably the best of a pretty mediocre bunch, it's a bit too smooth and lacking in anything that makes it stand out. 2/5.
Nice beat :) On song 2 so far. Girl has a fun 8-bit intro. Missing is sort of a trippy song with the bells? Chimes? Less energy though. I found Black Tambourine to be laughably bad, and boring. Earthquake Weather begins very interestingly. In fact, I liked it so much, that was the first song from this album I added to my liked list. Interesting beat, sorta funky. Interesting lyrics. My favorite song on this album by far. Hell Yes is kind of reminiscent of his older stuff. I also really enjoy this song. I like slower songs, so when Broken Drum started I was excited to see where it went...it went nowhere basically. I liked the lyrics, but musically was boring to me. Scarecrow was fine and I added it because it did make my head bob. None of the last four songs were anything of note to me. Album started slow, got better in the middle, and ended slow. 4/10 I think.
Interesting instrumentation, cool vibes, annoying voice
Couldn’t see myself listening to this again and only barely enjoyed it. 2.5/5
I don't think I really like Beck. I just get nothing out of it. There's clearly some artistry here but I'll pass personally. Fav songs: - E-Pro - Girl
It's like they have made a big set of songs with no apparent conection between, don't match them. However, i really liked at least half of them.
what's so special or interesting about Beck? this is the first album of his that I'm listening to and it's b-o-r-i-n-g. sounds like some mediocre middle-aged white dude who's convinced he's cool and has something profound to say but it's just not the case. couldn't fully finish a single song on this album besides the first one and broken drum. waste of space on the list
Didn’t we do Beck already? After Odelay is there anything to add for only 1000 albums? This is good. No question. But not a must listen. 2.5 marked down because it shouldn’t be here.
- Maybe I am just prickly today, but Beck was not doing it for me. I feel like this album is occasionally trying to have some weight and grit, but it all feels overproduced. - Beck is known for just incorporating random sounds, which sounds like something I would like, but it becomes predictable to the point that it grates on my nerves. - I do not outright hate any tracks here...but I do not necessarily like any of them either. I would probably be inclined to skip every one. - Like Beck, I grew up in a heavily Latino area. But "Que 'Onda Guero" just makes me cringe.
Fair

Like Odelay, this feels like it's everything and nothing at the same time. Dunno, not feeling it right now
forgettable
Wow! I did not like this! I grew up listening to a lot of 2000s alternative music and something about it just irks me nowadays. Maybe in 15 years, I'll be able to find this sort of music nostalgic, but too little time has passed for this album to sound anything but stale. A few tracks on here had moments that I found sonically interesting, but the lyrics gave me little to chew on. If I were to give this project any praise, it would be for the immense amount of genre-hopping that Beck does from track to track without losing his unique style. Aside from that, I got little from this listen.
Expected to like it more. Kind of inconsistent.
Perfectly forgettable. Who is a Beck fan? Is it fans of folk? rock? rap? I guess that's the point? I can appreciate the melding of genres but none are taken to any extreme interesting limits.
Kann man gut nebenbei hören. Den Sprechgsang finde ich OK. Insgesamt ist es eher langweilig.
A few catchy songs, overall Beck is always just kinda meh to me though. Especially when he's trying to make more serious ballad type songs lol. Anyway, it's like a 2.5 I guess.
Not Mutations.
This was my first time back after many, many months away from doing this! So I'm not quite in the groove yet with rating things. I'll call it a 2 or a 3. It wasn't super pleasant, but it was interesting.
I'm not the biggest fan of Beck. I've listened to this album before, but on previous listens it didn't do much for me. 'E-Pro' is a fun song and a good start to the album. There are multiple times throughout this album where a 'breakdown' occurs that really doesn't excite or interest me. There are more songs on here that I'm enjoying than I thought/remembered, but there are still some songs that I really don't like ('Missing', 'Earthquake Weather', 'Emergency Exit'). Probably won't be listening to this again. 2/5
Girls is a jam but Beck’s schtick gets old fast
Saaiheid.
A bit dull. No stand out tracks. Ok as background music. Same as all the Beck stuff I’ve heard.
Good, not my thing
To say this album started off on the wrong foot with me given that it is Beck would be an accurate statement. To say that it was further condemned in my view by being only accessible through YouTube Music for me would be an even more accurate one. On the album: it's the best I've heard from Beck so far...still not great. His musical influence shifts from Radiohead to Gorillaz in this one. On YouTube Music: try creating a worse, more unusable platform than this. Ads after every single song. Buffering only during songs, never during the precious ads! Cannot do a single other thing on the phone while listening besides having the song on the screen. I'm done with it. There has to, HAS TO be a better alternative than this
I never understood the appeal of Beck. This album couldn't provide any answers. Oh well .... 2/5
It felt like there was too many in-jokes here. Ha, bloody ha. But not so funny when you're not in on it. I like the bleeps and the general electronic fiddling. It works best when the analogue comes crashing over the digital. He knows how to write a decent riff. But I wanted something a little extra more. There was no knockout punch. I get the impression that Beck recorded this album for himself, and not his audience. This is never a bad thing. But I don't share his personal musical direction.
: )
Guero indeed. Maybe this slapped at the time but it sounds like a cringey mess to me. I generally like albums to feel thematic rather than "a collection of songs" which is what this was to me.
Coming in fairly fresh to Beck. I have heard some of the overplayed hits and never was motivated to seek out more. Overall there are some banger funky beats but they are scattered among some mediocre stuff for me. Track Reactions (not comprehensive): 1. Immediate head bop. This is a nice one. 2. Funky and fun. 3. I could see this being popular it is just a bit generic/boring for me. 4-8. Not really a fan. 9. Back to a funky fun feel. 10. Keeping that good momentum going. 11. And we lost it... 12-13. Went out with a bit of a whimper.
Background music, some interesting bits but mostly boring
Lisäksi hänen käsityksensä rockista on 90-luvun grunge.
Only listened to part of it
Pretty meh and just not for me
Third album by Beck on this list. It was ok. I was not familiar with any of the songs. I do not think I need to listen to it again. I did not hate it, but it was pretty unremarkable.
only downloaded earthquake weather
Not enjoyed any of the songs - too much sand-dry percussions that I don't like. May be my mood was wrong or a daytime did not fit. May give it a try another day.
Sinceramente...
This felt like Odelay 2 in a bad way.
First song, the most popular one, was already not spectacular. The rest did not get better. 2/5
E pro and girl and alright but there wasn’t much else for me there.
Odio California.
idk i can’t put my finger on wtf Beck even is. It’s not bad it’s not good. It’s an interesting sound, but i don’t like it a lot.
The background rhythm & beats were way too repetitive. Couldn't concentrate on the lyrics & melody because I was distracted by the background.
Just not really my thing. E-pro though
Some interesting bits but in the end just to generic. Too Beck.
It's okay. The entire album feels like a bit too much though, like the noise was just there to be noise rather than with a purpose.
Hard to listen too.
Kind of dull and flat for my taste
E pro- Catchy riff, not sure if the lyrics were good as they kinda get drowned out 👍 Qué Onda Guero- comical observations, its fine, production feels a bit overdone at points Girl- pov ur a serial killer missing - fairly monotonous Black Tambourine- 👍 Earthquake weather- wish the vocals were a bit more emotive but i did like this track 👍 Hell Yes- we really have gone to just listing as our lyrics, I just find this quite annoying Broken Drum- I love heavy instrumentation matching the vocal line 👍 Scarecrow- seems like filler Go It Alone Farewell Ride - And yet this album keeps on going! (I do like this tho)👍 Other songsare more of the same 2/5
Lot of potential in the talent that seems wasted. The beats are largely dry and repetitive, and there's little to no inflection or energy in the singing
Eh
He has a definitive sound, which is good if you like it, but Loser is enough Beck for me
2/5 too calm
I cannot find something to hook on with Beck. I often get recommendations but I cannot relate.
Unremarkable
Not my style
2.75 stars
How did this mundane piece of work get selected?
Trash - first song is ok, quite like a kasabian song. 'Hell Yes' is what made me turn off, load of shite. the rest of the songs before this were just bland. your mans voice has no interesting quality to it. started listening to the second half, 'Broken Drum' is the only song id listen to for a second time Overall they are decently written songs with an uninteresting singer. Critics of the album seem to commend its uniqueness/weirdness. i dont hear that at all
Heard it before?: No Enjoy it? Not really Favourite song: didn’t have one
The man has Talent Oozing out of his Veins. A Mixture of Hip Hop, Funk, Soul, Blues & funk. Each song will have you Dancing and singing. A Great Album
Ok but not my thing
The first song was good but went down hill from there, really quite boring when kinda get into what they're going for. Listened to it through
It’s fine, I guess. My exposure to Beck is minimal. I know Loser, I listened to Debra a couple of times after Baby Driver came out. The biggest thing I know him from is the episode of Futurama he appeared in, which brings the number of Futurama references I’ve made in these reviews up to two. Much like the Dexy’s Midnight Runners album, a lot of the songs blend together to a worrying degree. It’s not an unpleasant blend, I really enjoyed Girl and Broken Drum, but a few times I was listening, zoned out for a second and came back to a something that I thought was just a different movement of one song, only to find it was a completely separate one when I looked up the track listing. I really dunno, I’m really not feeling this, as evidenced by the fact that I’m reviewing this two days late. I suspect Beck is the US equivalent of all of those middling UK Indie albums that keep popping up on this list. He was part of a movement that made sense in it’s time, but ended up not being the predominant trend in it’s genre and so leaves modern listeners a little confused as to the level of critical acclaim that it received. I want to like it more than I do, but I just can’t bring myself to care too much about this collection of mostly middling summery Beach Pop.
I did not enjoy this at all. Every song had me thinking "when will this song be over?" and at the end of every song, I was praying it would be the last one. At least it didn't completely offend my ears? But I would not listen again.
I really hoped I would like this more
Reviewing this a day later and I have no memory of listening to this except I know I did not like it
not terrible but wayyy too repetitive
2/10
interesting mix of songs
A lot of just wasn’t really my vibe, but there were some good songs (Girl, Go It Alone, Emergency Exit). Hell Yes sucked ass. I don’t really like the rapping parts on this album. I don’t know what else is on this list of albums, but I’ve got a hard time figuring out why this is a classic.
Gayero
The first song is easily the best one. The crunchy guitar riff of E-Pro is unforgettable and gets stuck in your head. Pure eargasm. The remaining songs are OK, nothing exceptional
E-PRO = meh, okay but nothing special, wouldn’t have had it as opening track. Reminds me of another song but idk what. QUE ONDA = reminds me a bit of the salmon dance song by chem bros. Catchy but again just boring vibe. GIRL = ahh I like this one. Happy wee tune, driving with windows down on a sunny Sunday or smth. MISSING = I don’t like the repetitive tune and beats etc. nothing is sticking out for me and neither is this. Voice reminds me of pearl jam a bit in this also. BLACK TAMBOURINE = sounds like he’s about to sleep while singing. V boring. Least there’s a tambourine in it. EARTHQUAKE WEATHER = My fave so far, most lively but still chill lmao. Whimsical ending. HELL YES = Rappy and female voice reminds me of a BMTH song. BROKEN DREAM = ohhh I like this one. Quite sad. Again pearl jam esque. Love the instrumental parts. Makes me feel like I’m walking in a daze out of it. SCARECROW = wee bit funky. Repetitive lyrics. GO IT ALONE = nah nah nah nah. FAREWELL RIDE = breaking bad theme tune who? Very cowboy western. Would be a good show song. RENTAL CAR = shame it’s getting better as the album draws to an end. EMERGENCY EXIT = I wish he used his lovely voice for better music. SEND A MESSAGE TO HER = should’ve been on album. CHAIN REACTION = like this one, good ending. Overall, rather boring, one or two good songs I would listen to again but most of it is just lost in the abyss. Rather forgettable. Probably would not listen again.
oof. i mean, i see where he's going, but it's absolutely not my way.
I think I don’t like beck lol
The album isn't even that bad, just very cringe. Every song uses some combination of jingle bells, claps, and that rusty-sounding guitar. It's too Californian.
Eh the singles are ok but overall not great
A decent listen. Low tier as far as beck albums goes for me
Started off strong but got kinda weird for me as it progressed.
I appreciate Beck has an artistic vision. It's just not one that does anything for me. Also, he should not rap. Ever.
Nice concept, not really for me. The music throws me off a bit, doesn't feel cohesive. But interesting
ok
2/5. It's not a bad album honestly, some bops, it's just not my type of music. A personal rating for this one. He just sounds bored which in turn makes me bored even though the songs are good.
I feel as if, were procedurally generated music to ever take hold, it would sound an awful lot like Guero by Beck. For a start, it's repetitive. I say this very neutrally, as repetition can go either way, but there's not a huge amount going on rhythmically. The formula seems to go - establish a groove, swathe it in Beck's weirdly soporific vocals and throw in the odd 'interesting' sound like a wonky guitar or a whimsical, eccentric harmonica, rinse and repeat. All this is done altogether competently and the overall effect is just very, very dull. However, the main reason I see this as a prime candidate for machine-generated music is a real lack of heart. Where's the emotional centre to all thus? Bloodless, glassy-eyed music that spoofs the true genius of creative endeavour. Those slide guitar breaks sure sound pretty though!
Man, this record sounds pretty darn good overall when played loudly in a car. Not as good as “Sea Change,” but pretty darn good. Too bad the songs are no bueno. Nothing ever seems to build to anything on any given song. It’s a collection of sounds that are never really given any direction to go other than to just be played and repeated. It also really dawned on me while listening to this just how much success Beck has had in spite (because?) of a very less than impressive singing voice. That’s nothing new, but dude has multiple Grammys and is still going strong-ish 30 years after his breakout. I’m trying to think of who else from the 90’s falls into that category and I’m drawing a blank. Must be the Scientology bump.
Meh borde inte vara på listan
It was ok, wouldn’t listen to it again.
Can't find Beck interesting
Ew.
Some nice slide guitar in some songs but its not a focus, lyrics not worth worrying about, kinda meh not sure what the hype is about
First listen Saved 5/13 Top track: E-Pro
Ikkje nåken stor beckhamfan heller
Not for me
A little uneven for me. Good then bad
Not sure if we need more than one Beck album on here, especially when every song sounds like it's about to become "Devil's Haircut."
Third Beck album I got on the 1001 list, and I still don't get it...
Vaguely aggressive and aggressively white.
2.25
Don't like his style of rapping/singing and I find his music in this album grates on me, apart from Broken Drum. I like some Beck stuff but this album isn't for me.
Nothing bad, but very forgettable.
A bit experimental for my taste
Not a big fan.
Just not me
Wherein Beck tries his hand at appropriating more than a few different cultures with mixed results. Several songs have a certain catchiness about them, but the end product feels to scattershot and see-what-sticks to feel whole. Can’t decide whether it wants to be radio-friendly or experimentally artistic and lands firmly in the middle at Beck’s usual smarminess
nothing really stuck out I can kinda see how alt rock bands would get inspired by this 2.5
Meh.
Beck is an artist that reminds me of Coldplay in that I can’t put my finger on it, but I really don’t love it. Summer Girl is a good tune and the rest I didn’t enjoy vocally and the instrumentals are extremely repetitive.
A couple catchy tunes including E-Pro to kick things off, but this thing nosedives worse than the Winnipeg Jets season. From Black Tambourine on, just a very forgettable stretch. Highlight - E-Pro Lowlight - Hell Yes
Han är överskattad.
udmærket, moderne rock, eksperimenterende
E-Pro - 3/10 I cant lie this aint fo me
