I'll be honest. Not good. Not even punk. Just nothingness. First album I have not finished.
My relationship with Mark E Smith has changed over the years. At the moment we're going through a good patch. This is refreshing post-Punk although quite late for '85. Good melodies with the usual Fall sneer.
Repetitive punk rock
Post-punk's hit-and-miss for me, and this one's got plenty of both. It's an interesting reference point for like... There's a spate of psychedelic surf rock groups that cropped up in the 2010s that clearly came from this type of roots, but the journey from here to there is still pretty murky to me

Ok, Lool, I tried. It sounded like a blend of punk and mod and a few tracks sound like the beginnings of a Joy Division sound. Not one of the greatest albums of all time. An interesting musical sampler of sorts. if you were doing a course on the evoluition fo British music. I assume it's an important transition album, or it represents a genre or "moment" in music. but I don't like it... I wil let Wikipedia do the rest as they say it best, actually " their music has generally been characterised by an abrasive, repetitive guitar-driven sound, tense bass and drum rhythms, and Smith's caustic lyrics" yep.
Missed this one, always like an opportunity to call out Mark E. I've not gotten The Fall and never will, strange the status they are afforded. Was there any more prolific post-punk band than The Fall? Between 1979 & 1990, including live albums & compilations, they released close to 30 albums. This was one of their most user-friendly, partly due to the introduction of new member, & Mark E. Smith’s new missus, Brix. I found many of their album’s difficult to listen to, but this one certainly had its moments. I have the single L.A./ Cruiser’s Creek, which is a ripper. Side 2 of the original L.P. is some of the best work the band ever did.
I never got The Fall, so I thought "here's an opportunity to give them a proper go, listen to whole album, one that is regarded as their best and most accessible. Maybe Mark E. Smith's voice isn't the most annoying bleating you ever heard once you get used to it. Maybe this is not just one of those bands that John Peel fell in love with and played so much that they became a beloved British institution through sheer familiarity, regardless of being complete rubbish. Maybe this is a band so bad that they're good." Nope. Just nope.
I really like The Fall, but this is pretty weak for them.
A bloody good record by The Fall. I've never heard Cologne pronounced like that before.
I'm not sure what it is about this album, but I found it very dull. There were occasional parts that I liked, but most of the time it felt like there was nothing happening. It's the album equivalent of eating plain oatmeal much of the time. The sound quality on the album is also a bit poor, though that may result from the copy I was listening to on Youtube 2/5, but it's the best album I've given 2 stars to, if that helps
It's good. I like the energy.
This was a pretty challenging album, though the driving energy of the first half of the album carries it pretty far... the lyrics seem pretty sparse, so i'm not sure what to make of them. The latter half of the album seems a bit more experimental and isn't quite as compelling, but overall a pretty interesting album.

The Fall are another band I've meant to dig into further so I'm happy it's here. These are some fun, lo-fi post-punk jams. Very much in my wheelhouse. I can see how much a lot of bands I love were probably influenced by them.
Cool post-punk with an Iggy Pop influence on a few tracks. I really like the rough, jangly guitars and the loose style of the band. Some of the songwriting gets repetitive though (there’s a few too many songs that chant a refrain over and over again). I like the sound but I’m not sure the songs drew me in enough for repeat listens.
Wow I love the intro to this album. That overdriven baritone guitar is SO heavy. Then that spooky change at 0:37 was super unexpected but cool. I like this intro a lot. So much intrigue. This album feels like a fever dream to me. The main riff of "Barmy" is like happy~ish and fun and then interspersed throughout the rest of the track is contrasting moments of cacophonous mood shifts into almost satanic sounding parts. Nothing ever really settles before it shifts gears too. I really like the almost-off guitar tunings in "What You Need". The song itself felt kind of boring though. "Spoilt Victorian Child" hahahah what is there to say? What a chorus. This album gave me a lot of reactions and for that I am thankful. I don't know if I loved the music however and that's a pretty important criteria for this list. I gotta dig the music. For that reason I'm giving it a 2/5 that leans close to a 3.
Angular, funny, stupid, horrible, uncompromising 80s post-punk. It almost gets to a groove but not quite. You listen to this album for a mood not a boogie though
A great post-punk forerunner LP that delivers plenty of brash, heavy guitar, abstruse songwriting, and overall mercurial sonic whirlwind. Points off mainly for being a tad forgettable - I listened to the album first thing this morning and its excitement is nowhere near present here at the end of the day.
This record feels oily. And very samey sounding the whole way through. I like the way the bass was recorded. The clicks on each bass note was really pleasing. But I'm clearly looking for reasons to like this. It's fine.
This was kind of dreary, but then sometimes very likeable. I waffled between 3 and a 4 for this.

People often forget that post-punk is not one specific sound. It's often equated with the chorus-reverb'd guitars and pulsing drums of Joy Division or The Cure. No sir, there's a whole world of post-punk to explore, from Mission of Burma to This Heat to The Fall. The Fall's first album, Live at the Witch Trials, didn't sit well with me. Too disjointed and poor production led to me not thinking much of The Fall. Getting to land on a later album in their discography lends some insights. It definitely feels like band has matured and evolved since their debut album, with This Nation’s Saving Grace being more straightforward in their songwriting. Having a more focused a honed sound, The Fall's style of post-punk pulls quite a bit from the tones and riffs of art punk. Some songs will build off a simple groove, such as the arpeggiated synth line on L.A. Notably, lead guitarist Brix Smith would step up for this album and take on more songwriting duties, and her contributions are more than welcome here. Hearing this style of post-punk is refreshing, though not everything here meets the same level of quality. Despite this, I have a lot of respect for the sound that The Fall brings to the table, and I'm glad I got to give them a second chance.
This was cool, had never heard of The Fall. Solid album, but I just feel like it’s such a shame to be introduced to all these prolific post-punk groups so out of context. It makes me feel like I’m probably missing something? Dragged on a bit at the end, but cool stuff.

Naar mijn mening een essentieel album. Toen ik the Fall voor het eerst hoorde, dat was ook dit album, voelde het als een soort missende schakel tussen alle andere muziek die ik al luisterde. Zo veel bands, vooral in de UK scene, die deze sound meer dan 30 jaar nog steeds proberen te maken (ook succesvol!), maar dit is de kers op de taart. Het gaat van toegankelijke nummers als Barmy vlekkeloos over naar een nummer als I Am Damo Suzuki, een scherp eerbetoon aan Can en een van de meest unieke zangers die er ooit geweest.

I can see the appeal but this is definitely not my cup of tea.
Most of these songs felt like I was listening to the post-punk equivalent of a hippie jam band. I don't dislike the sounds going on, but it all felt rather aimless. If there were choruses, I rarely ever picked up on them. I usually like weird music like this, but there wasn't much for me to latch onto. Any time a song started with something promising, it was lost rather quickly. It felt very long too. So far, I've really liked the post-punk albums I've gotten, but this album is an outlier. I'm glad some people enjoy this, but I clearly don't get it. My favourite song was Petty (thief) Lout.

The Fall album #2 for me. The first was The Infotainment Scan, which was pretty bad. I gave it a 2 and wish I would downgrade it even more to a 1 if I could edit ratings. Needless to say, there was a sense of dread when this came up. However, I'm pleasantly surprised. The music is fantastic. Energetic. Ubeat. Unique. A little quirky, but in a good way. The vocals were easily the horrific nadir of Infotainment Scan, but the singer manages to not wreck this album. While they are still not a highlight, they complement the album's sound more. I might actually listen to this album again, except for the fear of Spotify throwing any of their dreck tunes into my Daily Mixes (which I quite like).

A workman-like album doing the drill as the Fall - not bad, not excellent - it sounds what an album number 8 of a band would sound like. Not fresh, but right off the production line.
Another record I hadn't heard and it somewhat surprised me because I enjoyed it. Started out strong, but kind of lost me towards the end, but overall, a solid post-punk work by the Fall, one of their better albums.

I’ve already been over this band twice before: don’t like it, don’t get it. This is my least favorite of the three I think, probably because someone else took a significant role in its creation.

I only ever see people who aren't fans of the Fall calling this their best album. It's quite good, but every studio album they released before it is better and so are a few later albums. As Ian McCann later wrote of Middle Class Revolt, This Nation's Saving Grace is "7/10 by their own standards, 8/10 by everyone else's."
Not my cup of tea. The overall sound was interesting, but the vocals were not great, which ruined it for me.
When it locks into a good groove, it's great. Can get a little bit lost in the weeds, though. Favorite tracks: "Bombast", "Paintwork", "Cruiser's Creek"

Even though postpunk seems to be the music I am attracted to more than others, this album took a few listens before the penny dropped. And when it did, it really did. There's a rawness and sometimes a bit of brutality to the songs but still with a poppy edge to it. Channeled energy that hardly ever goes to plain noise and shows how artful most of these songs are made. I enjoyed this a lot. Even with Vixen being a pure ripoff of 'Run, Run, Run' by the Velvet Underground

Hmm; not super impressed. Wiki says this album was their most acclaimed and at the peak of their accessibility, but I found it all pretty bland, with one or two exceptions. Just ok overall.

I only really knew The Fall by name- they’re another punk band who didn’t quite crossover to the states- so hearing this was kind of eye (or I guess ear)-opening. I think the best ideas are used early on and the pacing isn’t strong, but I generally like their sound and I appreciate their lyrics and performances. Will check out more. B
Finally, an album by The Fall makes the list. Not their finest album by any stretch, but still a great piece of work. This album was the start of their stint at trying to be more ‘commercial’, and sadly the lyrics suffered somewhat in comparison to other albums. The album before this - Wonderful and Frightening - is just as polished but with much better songs, both lyrically and musically. There’s a lot of repetitive phrases here that pass for lyrics - I Am Damo Suzuki, My New House - but still enough pithy humour to stop this sounding like any other band. The group sound tight, if not at their most inspired, and lines like "I'm not saying they're really thick / But all the groups who've hit it big…” tell you Mark Smith is not your usual rock lyricist. Parts of this are great (Paintwork, What You Need, Quantifier); others not so much. Not even in my top 10 albums by The Fall, but is definitely in my top 10 of albums in the 1001 Albums list (so far).
This was my first introduction to The Fall back in '85. It was tentative steps from Billy Bragg to The Smiths and then THIS. Impossible to categorise, apart from saying This is The Fall. You know what you're getting, but then again you never really do. It's a frightening album in places, yet full of optimism in others. But mostly it's just bonkers. Spoilt Victorian Child is the obvious highlight. But the riff on Barmy is Eurovision worthy. Cruiser's Creek is classic Fall. A brilliant, brilliant album.

I enjoy this album, but I'm not really sure it is a must hear. This is my 3rd album from The Fall and I haven't even been doing this a full year. It's a solid band, but there really could've been some superior albums in their place.
There were a few songs here I quite liked, but some of it just had far too much going on for me to understand or want to listen to. Definitely can see the British post-punk oozing from this whole album though. Favourite: Spoilt Victorian Child

Typical lo-fi trash can alcoholic mumblings from The Fall. If you know this band then this album isn't doing anything different from their other albums. It does, however, sound only like itself. Best Tracks: Spoilt Victorian Child; Paintwork; Cruiser's Creek
I expect I would have liked this in 1985 but it sounds dreadfully dated these days.
This gets off to a rocky start, the first two songs being throw aways, IMO. It was tempting to Did Not Listen this one, but I read about how much more assessible they became when Smith’s girlfriend, Brix, joined, co-writing and playing guitar. There are some catchy guitar intros as in Spoilt Victorian Child, which I liked. This is followed by L.A which I remember as A Fall anthem, which I’m happy to get reacquainted with and it will come in handy for indoor cycling.
This is a decent post- punk album. The lead guitar is ubiquitous but I think the real star is the bassist. A bit too cacophonous for me but I can see their appeal.
Really great and entertaining post-punk album. The instrumentation is extremely good and the vocals to compliment it are so clever and on point.

Mark Eeeee Smith at his scathing best. Floats in and out like a drunken tide. These are brilliant songs full of repetitive rhythms and melody. Ace!
I've never heard of The Fall or any of the music from This Nation's Saving Grace. There were times that the vocal delivery reminded me of the Clash, or the music reminded me of New Order or The Cure. Overall, I wasn't sure why this album is on the 1001 list. "L.A." caught my attention, but "My New House" should have been half as long. I made it through the album.

I don’t really know this band but I’m a big fan of the fall season. And like the season, this album was pretty cool! Unlike the season, it was kinda long. This concludes my comparison of this band to the fall season. Thank you.
I really like this record, but I'm not sure if I loved it. This is a great record in a lot of spots, but I think cutting down the length a hair would've done some good for this. I'd definitely recommend a listen. 3.5/5

Interesting sounds, full of surprises, lots of charisma in the vocals. I don't know this band terribly well, but more familiar with some of these songs than I expected.
I like quite a bit of this. Loose and fun. Sounds like some our jams at different points. Very catchy in its own odd way. I'd go as far as to say I feel a sort of musical kinship with this. Reminds me a bit of a rougher/looser Robyn Hitchcock at times.
I generally like what The Fall is doing, but unfortunately the album as a whole fell a little flat for me, not a lot of tracks stuck out except for Bombast and My New House (very Talking Heads). 3.5 to 4 since I am generally a fan of the sound.

A chaotic postpunk entry that, just like many of The Fall's albums, requires several listens to either understand or shrug off. Production is lofi but full of intense energy and humor. Wild instrumentation and atonal devices demonstrate the peak of their creativity. Songs are fully fleshed out, with most of them running for 4-6 minutes, yet you never know where a song is headed. It's unpredictable to the point where many songs are intentionally repetitive but then travel in a sudden and unexpected direction. Few tracks I still find annoying, and I think an hour is too much to process. Thoroughly enjoyed Brix's contributions, who apparently wrote many of the songs. Favorites: Barmy, Spoilt Victorian Child, LA, Paintwork, I Am Damo Suzuki

Based on the album art art, title and first song I was not interested in this. Really good album afterwards though. Going to be listening to this more.
Oh. So these guys again. They get another one? Hmm. I don't think I hate this is much as the witch one, but... I'm extremely annoyed by it. A lot of repetitive phrases backing the song title repeated over and over, going for 4–5 minutes each, for over an hour. Next!
I have listened to this multiple times and it still has left me numb to it. I mean, it didn’t disturb me or irritate me most of the time, but it left me completely unimpressed.
After being very unimpressed by The Fall's Live at the Witch Trials, I had rather low expectations for this one. It easily cleared that bar. Some of these songs have a rockabilly feel with vocals that aren't really on what I'd call a reasonable pitch but --- hear me out --- not in a bad way? Not a favorite by any means but I'm warming a bit.
I had another album from The Fall (Live at the Witch Trials) that I didn’t care for much, so I was surprised that there is another The Fall album on the list. This was a little bit better, although just a little. I felt bored. Apparently this is their most accessible album… so I guess The Fall isn’t going to be for me.
Bombast has me feeling the groove. The hooks are a lot like what I used to write when I was just learning guitar. In fact, these songs sound like a bunch of songs that any modern garage band could come up with. I am not particularly taken with it but I don't really hate it either.

Wasn't a big fan of this one. Wasn't a big fan of Mark E. Smith's vocals and couldn't care for his lyrics, or some of the punkier tracks music too (i.e. Bombast and Couldn't Get Ahead). Also found a few slower songs with very quite vocals quite annoying. The thing that saves it for me is the groove based tracks. Songs like L.A., Barmy, Paintwork and Cruiser's Creek weren't brilliant but were fun to listen to.
I... actually didn't mind this? Mark E Smith was bearable? I even enjoyed parts of it?? What is the world coming to!?!
Really strong move compared to other albums by them, but too bloated to get the 5.
Something a bit different - I like it
All heft and no bite. Too repetitive, songs built in very repetitive little guitar licks.
The Fall really were the workhorses of post punk, weren't they? They just plowed along, releasing an amazing body of work over decades, while different styles and their flashier peers came and went. The musicianship here is fantastic, with standout performances across the board. The band maintains the looseness and off-the-cuff aspects of punk, but with an ear to moderation that reveals their method to be much more artful than you would expect. Their ability to judiciously use noise as if it's another instrument works great here. They also drift in and out of different genres and moods pretty seamlessly, which makes for an album that's really full of pleasant surprises, beginning to end. Never really liked The Fall so, while This Nation’s Saving Grace has some interesting moments, it's just not something I enjoyed or appreciated beyond 'yeah I can see why some like this, not me though'. 2/5.
4 for me. Had heard of The Fall (almost entirely due to the big fanfare of publicity they got when Mark Smith died), but never knowingly listened to any of their stuff. I started out thinking that it wasn't really my thing, it's almost a bit too noisy and jarring, but after a few tracks I started to get properly into it. Really solid quality all the way through, I thought, didn't really tail off in any way. It's all a bit weirk, dark, and quirky, but it fits together really well and I like it a lot.
I know few of The Fall's albums but this is fantastic. Looking forward to wading through their other 31 albums for anything approaching TNSG. I love the sequence of 'My New House', 'Paintwork', 'Damo Suzuki', and 'To Nk'.
Never heard of this band before and looking it up they sure are prolific. They have a very interesting sound and it sounds like they are inbetween the 80s and 90s. Really hard for me to decide but I enjoyed it enough. 3.5/5

It's the sort of music that sounds great live with plenty of volume but doesn't translate well into a listenable studio album. Songs are a bit repetitive and I find myself being bored before the end of each track.

Let’s suppose this is an important and representative example of “post-punk.” In that case although I liked listening to this once through, I don’t think I will be looking for more. Another case of nearly all songs being 2-3x longer than they should be. Probably they were fun live, tho.
I tried to like it. Tried real hard, made several attempts. Depsite this, I didn't find it enjoyable as a whole. It has some interesting sounds, but it doesn't outweigh the debatable vocal. Not my jam, at least at the time of listening.

Brzmiało jak coś co mógłbym polubić, mimo najszczerszych chęci nie udało się. Ciekawe linie melodyczne, ale niezbyt interesujący głos, technicznie jakoś nie powala, koncepcji albumu też zbytnio nie rozumiem - wydaje się losową zbieraniną dość generycznych tracków.
A few catchy riffs, notably Barmy, and slightly more coherent vocals than other Fall efforts but a long way to go before the accessibility of The Infotainment. Not awful.
Not bad music. Won’t be one of my favorites
This album is a wonderfully cohesive mix of post-punk/new wave with a healthy dose of 60s garage rock in the style of MC5, rockabilly, and surf rock. The mixture of these more diy genres fits in well with the Fall’s post-punk ethos. Despite the genres involved, the production is very slick and precise. I was disappointed by some of the Fall’s later work, but this album captures their essence at its peak and I understand now why they’re important.

Every chorus was them repeating the name of the song over and over again. Like a shitty British version of Jet. Stopped 3/4 of the way through the album. Favorite song - L.A.
Lotta cool stuff here. So many songs that just have really hypnotic, catchy riffs that are calm yet also ominous. Simple but effective. And then there’s I Am Damo Suzuki which caught me really off guard with the polyrhythms
Probably innovative for its time, a precursor to Modest Mouse and other better noise that came after, but for that, still kind of sucks.

Echt wel goeie rock muziek. Vrij experimenteel met clash achtige (stem) en interessante basslijnen die voor wiegende bewegingen zorgen.
Really enjoyed this one, I'm a sucker for this genre and this era so I knew pretty quickly I was doing to like it.

Surprisingly excellent. I’m a big punk fan but I’d never heard of The Fall and I’m so glad I did. Really cool kinda droning art-rock take on punk music. Reminds me of Velvet Underground or like a pre-LCD Soundsystem
Vjerujem da nije baš lako njih slušati i da ti bude ono nešta wow, ali meni imaju. Mark E. Smith je gospon (počivaj u miru), koji nije pjevao, već je non stopno pričao kroz svaku pjesmu, ali na svoj način da ne ispadne skroz monotono jer u kombinaciji njegove priče koje znaju biti satiričine, realne, čudne i imati repetecije s ciljem naglašavanja nekih dijelova (gdje se meni čini da taj repetativni dio ne mora predstavljati neke veoma važne riječi) ide i ritmični, jači i ponekad dost' glasni instrumentali što oboja ono što žele opisati. Osjeti se dosta utjecaja na današnji post-punk - hladni zvukovi gitare i basa, glasovi - taj način izvođenja pjesama koje me podsjećaju upravo na našeg Markića i samim time vjerujem da su kao grupa napravili jako jako veliki posao u ostavljanju utjecaja u glazbi. Gle, Sonic Youthu su bili jedni od utjecaja, šta imam više za reć. Pjesme sa ovog albuma koje bih izdvojio su: Barmy, Spoilt Victorian Child, L.A., My New House, Couldn't Get Ahead (iako nije na original izdanju, nego na kazetnom) i Paintwork. Mark je volio derat po pivu, pa eto Mark, danas ću popit jedno pivo u tvoje ime. Cheers.

The first two songs are good, song 3 Barmy is great, with a a weird rhythm guitarcdriving the song. The songs of the fall are all kind of weird and quirky...kind of a post-punk / new wave Captain Beefheart. Mark E. Smith's through a megaphone style vocals are certainly an acquired taste. Not much conventional song structure here, just Smith ranting over strange rhythms. But I like it, though a full album can get daunting. 3.5 🌟
The first time listening to the fall. And wow these are the albums we love on this list, not a huge post punk fan so the vocal style does take a bit of getting used to, but feel this is just one of those albums you can keep coming back to and getting so much more from each time. Interesting that this music is the in thing for so many new bands in the U.K. at the moment, (As seen this week with Yard Act debut album getting no2 in the charts) the Fall clearly a huge influence for all these bands.

Good post punk. The mixing does seem to be a little off though, the vocals seem too quiet on some tracks.
A drunk asshole mumbles into a microphone while the bass player uses studio time to learn scales and the rhythm guitar does whatever it wants. Occasionally, a girl who can't carry a tune shows up to sing. Might be tolerable if they were sticking it to the man or something, but it's all pseudointellectual navel-gazing. Best track: Mansion
Good solid punk, have been exposed to a bit of the Mark E Smith lore via Adam Buxton so was kind of familiar with the context.
Wonder if it's better than Live at the Witch Trials. The worst album yet. Yea this sucks.

The best of this album IMO: - Bombast - L.A. Sounds like they recorded the first songs that came in their minds while in a jam/improv session. It's not a bad thing. Some songs lack variation - they repeat the same lyrics and same riffs over and over and over, like looping the same 4-bar sequence ad infinitum (j'exagère un peu). I enjoyed the more instrumental songs like Bombast and L.A. These are the kind of songs I get in my fever dreams. 2.8/5

Mark E. Smith's singing is garbled, the instruments sound out of tune and it sounds like it was recorded in a toilet block, with a cheap cassette player. Yet it is a brilliant, unique and exciting album that has served as an inspiration for so many acts that followed (yes I am looking at you Pavement). I don't listen to the Fall nearly enough
I'm sure this is a fantastic album for folks that really enjoy a particular flavor of punk. I am not one of those folk, and this makes the second 2-star album in a row. C'mon, albums generator! Gimme something I can like!

I'm sorry, I couldn't make it through it. Too long and uninteresting. Really just didn't dig it. I've also just not had a great day, so maybe my perspective is skewed. Also, The Fall is a terrible band name.
Instrumentation was good, but the vocals made it too much like annoying noise for me to really enjoy.
Decent punk rock album. Felt like it lasted a bit longer. The instrumentals were good and the sounds were familiar to other punk albums. In all it was a pretty average album. 5.7/10

Seriously thought this was a Hot Topic "mallpunk" band based on the name. Like a band that would open for My Chemical Romance. Nope. This is old and good. But I can see this band having influenced a lot of those bands. This was a totally unexpected treat and I'll definitely listen again and explore their discography.
I don’t like it. The British punk thing is cool, but it sounds like they were writing these songs while they were recording them. They found a two-bar lick they liked, stuck it on repeat, and mumbled over top of it.

Really liked the music but the incoherent and repetitive lyrics really killed it for me. There were a couple of decent songs at the end to salvage it though.
The one shifted around a lot while listening to it but I ended up on a 4. It got unusual enough while still staying within the realm of dang good.

Admittedly, I know nothing about this band. But I did enjoy the first 30 minutes of this album, then it started to lose me only because of the length. It has a really nice Clash/Smiths ‘punk’ vibe that really appeals to me. This is the first time since we started doing this that I’ve listened to an album by a band I know nothing about and am pretty sure I’ll check out more of their catalogue from this.
Often imitated, never duplicated; no one does sprechgesang as well as Mark E. Smith. He was a cantankerous lad and his attitude sure bled into his work--and to its benefit. Fundamental piece of post-punk right here. Standouts include: "Spoilt Victorian Child", "I Am Damo Suzuki", and "Gut Of The Quantifier". Brix's vocals adds a pop element that's missing from some of their more inaccessible tunes. Loving her voice and the harmonica on "Couldn't Get Ahead" and that pop groove on "paintwork" is hella infectious. That said, it's a long album and it takes a couple songs to ramp up speed at the beginning. 🌟🌟🌟🌟 (4.5 if I could)

Barmy is great. I'd add that one to my punk playlist. Mansion and the similar-sounding To Nik Rocachment: Yarbles are nice bookends to start and end the album. The first couple of times I listened I wasn't impressed but, it started to grow on me. It has its moments. Standout: Barmy

I enjoyed this album, but I feel like it could've been five songs shorter. The repetitiveness was nice in the first half, creating a hazy, timeless effect through each song, but by the end of the album it all just started to sound the same.
Wasn't expecting to enjoy this, but there are some real gems on there... especially paintwork.

Post-punk poets? Post-poetry punks? Punk-poet posties? If you're gonna make approximately 5 squillion albums in your band's lifetime, looseness has to be some kind of categorical imperative. That's certainly true of this mob, in which case something as restricting as genre is for the birds. But poetry in music isn't just about diddling words. It's about tone and feel too. And seeing as looseness as categorical imperative borders on "all art is useless" and some kind of poet said that, we may have our answer after all: all of the above.

90% of time I can't tell what they're saying. The production value is among the worst I've ever heard. Additionally, and it might be intentional, but sometimes it seems like the band isn't playing the same song as the vocalist or the other musicians. Best song on the album was Rollin' Dany. Then I looked it up and it's a fucking cover. The original sounds so much better too. Best thing I can say about them is the album artwork is nice and the song titles are interesting. To their credit, the songs don't all sound the same.

I'm going to have to agree with Nick's comments, this record's runtime is a bit of a slog, which I suppose relates to the records themes. A real upside down/mirrored look at our world, stripped of it's joys and stranding us in a horrific atmosphere. The post-punk poetry here sometimes hits the mark, but can feel a little aimless at times. Rating: 2.5/5 Fav tracks: L.A. and To Nk Roachment: Yarbles
Mixed feelings on this one. I can't help but feel like a little editing would have gone a long way on this one. The material doesn't really justify the run-time, but there's some really excellent moments as well. I can appreciate the disaffected post-punk energy, but it just feels a little muddled to me while giving off a greater air of artfulness or importance than it can back-up with the songs. Well, that was interesting. The best way I can describe this is artfully removing the art from music. The repetitive droning and intentionally bizarre vocal style seem to be designed to draw your attention to the lyrical content, then reinforce it with repetition. In other words, to me this isn't about making music, it's about using elements of music as a vehicle for promoting the ideas held in the content of the lyrics.

I feel like this name comes up in lists and recommendations all the time. I can't say I've ever listened to anything by them. I like the twangy surf rock vibes of some of the songs. Nothing is really jumping out at me as must listens, but I enjoyed the listen.
It actually starts off decent with some catchy riffs and punk style songs. The B Side unfortunately takes it over a cliff.
A fun, interesting mix of genres. Kind of a post-punk vibe throughout, but sometimes it goes full Stooges-style punk. Other times we get Rockabilly. A real treat from start to stop.
It was fine, I liked it a little better than PJ Harvey. I didn't find the music special in anyway. I suppose that has been the point, there are genre defining albums. I certainly found other albums from this era superior. meh out of 5

Like "yeah we're gonna just mess around and you're gonna like it" Punk always feels like they just got drunk the night before and then forgot to write a song. Which to be fair is pretty damn punk BUT it still sounds...last minute. I'm just gonna yell "Spoilt Victorian Child" and it's supposed to mean something besides "Oh no I forgot to write a song"
I've always skirted around The Fall, never truly getting into them or learning about them. Very glad I'm getting the chance to- only a few songs in and I can tell I really like it. It feels like hypnotic, half-obscene punky ramblings. "Spoilt Victorian Child", "LA", were fantastic.
