Reviews (page 5 of 7)

I really like this record, but I'm not sure if I loved it. This is a great record in a lot of spots, but I think cutting down the length a hair would've done some good for this. I'd definitely recommend a listen. 3.5/5

decent post punk album, its alright not outstanding. Most remarkable feature is the use of guitar riffs throughout that are more noticeable in similar acts

Interesting sounds, full of surprises, lots of charisma in the vocals. I don't know this band terribly well, but more familiar with some of these songs than I expected.

I have listened to this multiple times and it still has left me numb to it. I mean, it didn’t disturb me or irritate me most of the time, but it left me completely unimpressed.

After being very unimpressed by The Fall's Live at the Witch Trials, I had rather low expectations for this one. It easily cleared that bar. Some of these songs have a rockabilly feel with vocals that aren't really on what I'd call a reasonable pitch but --- hear me out --- not in a bad way? Not a favorite by any means but I'm warming a bit.

Bombast has me feeling the groove. The hooks are a lot like what I used to write when I was just learning guitar. In fact, these songs sound like a bunch of songs that any modern garage band could come up with. I am not particularly taken with it but I don't really hate it either.

Rating: 6/10 Best songs: Barmy

Never heard of this band before and looking it up they sure are prolific. They have a very interesting sound and it sounds like they are inbetween the 80s and 90s. Really hard for me to decide but I enjoyed it enough. 3.5/5

Great stuff. I'm just not a big fan of The Fall. This is one of those things where a lot people I respect think they're the best, but I just don't really get it.

Some early British punk, a splash of Talking Heads and even B-52s.

Proto punk

Glad I listened to this. Not my favorite genre, but I appreciate it.

It was just ok.

Let’s suppose this is an important and representative example of “post-punk.” In that case although I liked listening to this once through, I don’t think I will be looking for more. Another case of nearly all songs being 2-3x longer than they should be. Probably they were fun live, tho.

Not bad music. Won’t be one of my favorites

Pièces préférées: L.A., To Nk Roachment: Yarbles, Mansion

Blah. Some cool riffs but a bit repetitive.

Pretty good post punk? Surprised me.

The first two songs are good, song 3 Barmy is great, with a a weird rhythm guitarcdriving the song. The songs of the fall are all kind of weird and quirky...kind of a post-punk / new wave Captain Beefheart. Mark E. Smith's through a megaphone style vocals are certainly an acquired taste. Not much conventional song structure here, just Smith ranting over strange rhythms. But I like it, though a full album can get daunting. 3.5 🌟

Good post punk. The mixing does seem to be a little off though, the vocals seem too quiet on some tracks.

Enjoyable

nah 3/5

not so bad really

The best of this album IMO: - Bombast - L.A. Sounds like they recorded the first songs that came in their minds while in a jam/improv session. It's not a bad thing. Some songs lack variation - they repeat the same lyrics and same riffs over and over and over, like looping the same 4-bar sequence ad infinitum (j'exagère un peu). I enjoyed the more instrumental songs like Bombast and L.A. These are the kind of songs I get in my fever dreams. 2.8/5

Interesante, oscuro, buen disco

decent, first song was way more interesting than the rest.

Decent punk rock album. Felt like it lasted a bit longer. The instrumentals were good and the sounds were familiar to other punk albums. In all it was a pretty average album. 5.7/10

Reminds me of a free form Pixies. Good background music if you are feeling a little agro while exercising or doing physical activity

Pretty good album from a band I new little about

Really liked the music but the incoherent and repetitive lyrics really killed it for me. There were a couple of decent songs at the end to salvage it though.

Nothing too special about this album. Often too repetitive at times. Some songs were cool bit got old quickly enough.. nothing too bad.

Admittedly, I know nothing about this band. But I did enjoy the first 30 minutes of this album, then it started to lose me only because of the length. It has a really nice Clash/Smiths ‘punk’ vibe that really appeals to me. This is the first time since we started doing this that I’ve listened to an album by a band I know nothing about and am pretty sure I’ll check out more of their catalogue from this.

hedwiggy a bit

Barmy is great. I'd add that one to my punk playlist. Mansion and the similar-sounding To Nik Rocachment: Yarbles are nice bookends to start and end the album. The first couple of times I listened I wasn't impressed but, it started to grow on me. It has its moments. Standout: Barmy

Pretty good! Not what I'd usually listen to but it wasn't bad :D

average

I’m glad I’ve listened. I liked Spoilt Victorian Child 😅

I enjoyed this album, but I feel like it could've been five songs shorter. The repetitiveness was nice in the first half, creating a hazy, timeless effect through each song, but by the end of the album it all just started to sound the same.

every other post punk singer wants to be mark e smith so bad and this album makes that extremely clear... paint work

Nota: 5/10

I'm going to have to agree with Nick's comments, this record's runtime is a bit of a slog, which I suppose relates to the records themes. A real upside down/mirrored look at our world, stripped of it's joys and stranding us in a horrific atmosphere. The post-punk poetry here sometimes hits the mark, but can feel a little aimless at times. Rating: 2.5/5 Fav tracks: L.A. and To Nk Roachment: Yarbles

Mixed feelings on this one. I can't help but feel like a little editing would have gone a long way on this one. The material doesn't really justify the run-time, but there's some really excellent moments as well. I can appreciate the disaffected post-punk energy, but it just feels a little muddled to me while giving off a greater air of artfulness or importance than it can back-up with the songs. Favourite track: To Nk Roachment: Yarbles

Enjoyed this more than I expected. Although, l'm more interested in the story of Mark E. Smith and the Fall more than their music.

Lyrically not great but found it to be very interesting nonetheless.

Kinda mixed feelings. Sounds like, post-punk but with a but of a blues influence. Thought it was good but couldn't really decide how much I liked it.

I like this type of post-punk music, but the album itself is just good, nothing really special.

I feel like this name comes up in lists and recommendations all the time. I can't say I've ever listened to anything by them. I like the twangy surf rock vibes of some of the songs. Nothing is really jumping out at me as must listens, but I enjoyed the listen.

Honestly enjoyed this one. Not my absolute favorite thing, but one of the more enjoyable punk albums for me Favorite track: “Barmy”

Not bad. Not bad at all.

I’ve hear The Fall, but never a full album. I like this a lot and needed to hear it, I think! Reminds me of Bad Religion in some ways.

little bit samey with the guitar. god some songs acc sound so off tho ... mmm kinda hot tho

There are some interesting bass parts, but it leaves much to be desired. 7

I like the music

6.5/10 F.t.: I am Damo Suzuki

Very very British and on the 4th of July. USA USA USA!! The album was fine. 4/10 Top song Petty (Thief) Lout

It was ok, but. It for an hour.

NOT ANOTHER 80S POST PUNK ALBUM!!!! My ears are going to start bleeding soon. They might as well call this 801 eighties post punk, and 200 other, albums to listen to. I mean, it's not bad, but nothing special, sounded like the 30 other ones we already listened to, just maybe a little darker.

I had never heard of the Fall and I think I can go the rest of my life without listening to this group again.

Haven't been impressed with these guys after getting some of their other albums. This wasn't much better. Most songs just felt repetitive and meandering. More jammy I guess, but not totally unlistenable at the end of the day.

Just doesn't have the spark to make it to the top 1001. Maybe the 10001?

I was liking this more than Live from the Witch Trials but then it started to taper off. Can't vibe with this guy.

This is by far the most accessible Fall album of the three that I have heard. In fact I was toying with giving it three stars... But as I got to the end of the album, I said "NOPE!". (5.66) ★★½

The best album I have heard by The Fall, but that doesn't say much. 2.5 stars

So much angry 80s noise. Nonsense.

Meh. English punk that sounded from the 70s but was really from the 80s.

some nice tunes and I see where they influenced all of the 90s punk like Rancid. A bit too long for punk.

Gear: Moondrop Variations Artwork: 🐎☁️🏭 Production (Remastered 2011): 🔪🚮💩 Music: 😒🎸🍻 Rating: 👑👑/5

A good album by another punk band but nothing special or out of the ordinary. Just good music but not a must in any list

Fine to keep on but not something I would listen to actively. Even they really interesting instrumentals where blended out by some not-so-pleasant singing.

There's a few tracks and moments that I enjoyed and found quite engaging, and there's a bit of atmosphere. I also appreciate the fact that they're doing something a bit different and are committed to it. But... so much of this is just really samey and repetitive and kind of awkward. It feels kind of low-effort at times as well. It's not one of their better ones. 2.5 rounded down.

Not really my type of music. It feels like an unpolished Arctic monkeys album. Which is probably fair considering the album's genre and release date. I can't help escape the feeling that it's not very appetising in the 2020s however. If you like(d) this kind of music back when, this album was probably a 4. Today, considering my own tastes, it's a 2.

Didn’t like it at all. Seemed to me a mashup of trying to duplicate various musical genres; in my opinion just didn’t work.

heh, it's alright I guess

I was not previously familiar with the artist or album. It's a pretty far out there rock, I guess post-punk. It's dissonant and strange. I can appreciate some of this, but overall it's not particularly pleasant and I would not listen again.

I appreciate the intentions but it doesn't deliver. Little moments demonstrate that none of them are as technically naive as they lead on. So, the cacophony comes across as orchestrated and pretentious; precisely the tendencies that punk (and rock and roll) were reactions against. And while Mark Smith is clearly committed to avant exploration, the backing tracks are, for the most part, pretty bland rock and roll cliches (with atonal guitar blasts). Most damning, I never sense a musical point of view. He sounds like he wants desperately to be "artistic," but has nothing of substance that he wants to communicate. If it's true that creativity is making mistakes and art is knowing which to keep then this is inartistic creativity (a conclusion strongly reinforced by the volume of his output; there might be a decent 35 minute album buried among the stuff that doesn't work, but it's all thrown at us, seemingly without reflection). All that said, listening to this is more enriching than listening to anything that's ever been performed by a computer.

Nothing really jumping out at me. Pretty boring honestly. Makes me remember the times waiting for K-TON at the gym always stalling.

This album is calamitous and angry, smothered in grungy gauze, throttle and grit. At times it’s both perfectly incensed and unlistenable.

Meh. I know, seminal record blah blah.

I don't feel like I "get" the fall. I think this album might contain some of my favourite individual songs that I can think of from them - some stuff with a cool punky atmosphere but also some post rock kind of reel or maybe even fela kuti style. There are also a few tracks that kind of annoyed me. I find the voice a bit abrasive in some context. Sometimes it just feels a bit too rough and punky

Much better than the last Fall album I reviewed. Still not my favorite because of the singer. Rating: 2/10 Favorite Song: vixen

Didn't really stick with me. It was fine, but some of the tracks dragged on (much like the album as a whole). Rounding down cause I don't need to hear this again. One of the higher rated 2s. 2.5/5.

Not really my thing, I appreciate the melody and punk guitar work, but it doesn’t really click for me. I’ll say two stars.

zoned out vabshe idk

I felt like I was going to enjoy this in the first few tracks and then it just started to really drag. Songs too long, and album too long, became a bit drab.

A little less accessible than the last Fall album on the list. Influential, but, enjoyable? Eh maybe. Mid 2s.

didn’t blow me away but songs were ok

I didn't have a lot of time to listen to today's album, and that's fine because this is the one I drew. What I did hear, I did not like, so nothing was lost. The songs sounded like warm up exercises, were instantly forgettable (aside from the ones that were plainly annoying), and the production was terrible. Moving on.

Bad. Production is so poor, vocals unintelligible for the most part. Some good instrumentation makes this album listenable, I didn't hate it but certainly didn't like the majority of this record.

Average 80's post punk. 2.5 stars

Didn't _dislike_ this, but didn't enjoy it. There weren't a lot of memorable points for me, I had a lukewarm reception to all the songs. Also didn't finish the album either time - it was too long :/ 5/10 Fav Track: Barmy Saved a Song? ----- ✅ Saved Album? ------ ❌ Will Listen Again? --- ❌

And more of the Brit-centric playlist that doesn't dive deep enough into the really good stuff that was US and world renowned... This is downright awful. It's incredibly hard to believe this was released in 1985, it lacks all mid-80's flair or coolness. It's just messy, repetitive music with nonsensical vocals that are super repetitive. The only half-decent song was "L.A." which was a repetitive instrumental but had a big fat groove to fall into and guitars to actually carry a melody. I researched why this would ever be included on the T1001 and learned there are 3 albums by The Fall on there. What a joke and such a biased list that I've lost all respect for... Live at the Witch Trials (1979), This Nation's Saving Grace (1985), The Infotainment Scan (1993) - all of which suck. This is really shitty, it sounds like they recorded their warm up session and released it for all to (not) enjoy. Feels as though someones crazy grampa got ahold of the microphone or something. I didn't have fun. 2 stars

Another example of a mostly mediocre British group that is far too over-represented on the list of 1001 albums I must hear before I die (though apparently at least one listener thought they were UNDER-represented and added a FOURTH album by them!). I would certainly not argue against needing to hear one album by them, and this would probably be it. But in what insane (almost certainly very dull) universe does it make sense that I should listen to three (or four!) albums from these guys while pretending that Warren Zevon (ZERO albums on the list!) never existed?

L.A. is a good song. Aside from that, I was underwhelmed. What even is post-punk? In this case, it seems to connote off-kilter, minor rock songs.

don't really like this 2 stars

2,5 - cva ma vf ook ni cva

It feels like every other album I’ve gotten lately on this list is an 80s British post punk band I never heard of. Let’s check this out. It’s just very punk to me. Not necessarily my preferred sound. But this is fine. There’s nothing remarkable or distinctive here. Sounds like somewhat generic later punk to me. Enjoyed Barmy. Can’t understand what he’s saying and there’s a muddled quality to his voice on some songs that isn’t pleasant. Albums seems to vary between fun punk and boring nonsense. Hard to judge something that has some highlights and could’ve been more refined. But guess that’s punk and that’s part of the point. Don’t hate this but the fact that it’s an hour long, with wild swings from good to not great makes this a 2. Could’ve seen a tight 35 minute album that could be a solid 3 here if it cut some of its excess. But this isn’t it. Some fun punk songs though.

Not my thing

It's not offensive but it's also sounds like they recorded it within a wooden barrel. Not good.

3/24/26. Another controversial post-punk record for me, couldn't really get into it. Didn't hate it, but felt it repetitive and rambling. Couldn't really grasp the lyrics either, but that's a me problem!

This is okay as far as punk goes. At least a person can pick out a melody. Still, pretty hard to listen to.

I don't get it, and have no problem saying that 2*

It's ironic how samey a music genre defined by anti-establishment, independent experimentalism gets.

Just ok for me, might need another listen

This was mind numbing

Pretty pointless.

Started out okay enough, but by the halfway point of Vixen/Couldn't Get Ahead/Gut of the Quantifier mark, I just found myself annoyed by both vocalists and praying for it to be over.

Boring

Not great. Mostly talking over noise.

I like the atmosphere this album creates, and the bass at times is great - sometimes a bit groovy with a few songs towards the start. But his vocals suck. I can see what he's going for, but even then, it's just shit. The songs are too repetitive also. Not the album though, as each song is different from the one before and after it. But each individual songs goes on for too long. It's on the harsher side of a two, because there is definitely something here. If it was shorter I might give it a 3.

I’ve never been a fan of Mark E Smith’s voice. Re listening to this album has only cemented my view.

Didn’t care for this. Because crunchy noise by the end

This was forgettable. Sorry.

It's wild to me that this band has three albums on this list and the National has one. And there are so many great artists that have none. Like, why?

Uh-oh. It's The Fall. That's bad. Oh, but the Wiki blurb says this is more accessible than their previous works. That's good! But then I looked at their other albums that I've heard already, and I see my review for "The Infotainment Scan" complained that it was described as "the band's most accessible album" and it came out 8 years *after* this one. That's bad. But then the first few tracks actually sounded like music! The vocals are again entirely unintelligible, but if this holds up this could be the first album from The Fall that doesn't get a 1 from me. That's good! But the album as whole just sounds...simplistic and kinda amateur, if I'm being honest. I don't think I could point to any specific element of this album and call it high quality or even interesting. That's bad. But it wasn't objectively awful, offensively discordant, or a complete struggle to get through, so it won't get a 1. That's good! But The Fall contains potassium benzoate. That's bad.

500th album reviewed! Unfortunately not a winner. There are a few decent riffs here and there, but this album to me is almost all filler. The songs don't really go anywhere, and the sound isn't punchy or interesting enough for me to want to hear one half baked idea for a whole track, with vocals that sound like the band is just freestyling in the studio. I'm willing to give this the benefit of the doubt and maybe it's just not for me, but it's hard to imagine this ever being essential listening.

Has some flashes, but think there’s a lot of filler in here too.

Sounds like really bland new wave, some tracks were fun but overall a bit boring. The mix was also really flat, which kinda goes with the 80s punk aesthetic but I wish the mix was more dynamic

Also not that good but again don’t exactly remember I also skipped like half the songs

very okay

Better than a 1 but not a 3. I would never miss this if I never heard it again.

Basic rock instrumentals with punk vocals i.e. bad.

Not terrible, but they kept blue-balling me with tracks that would've been better if they'd gone 60% harder.

80s black midi (and just as bad)

I have never heard of this band or album before, so I'm coming into this with absolutely zero expectations • Mansion feels like an instrumental a First of October song would have, with spooky lyrics laid over top • I wish the vocals were a bit clearer in the mix at times. Occasionally they get through fine but it feels like they're quieter than the guitar a lot of the time • A lot of these instrumentals are really repetitive. I don't know if any song has had more than one repeating riff so far • L.A. and Vixen are quite a bit better than the songs before them, but my favourite so far is still the instrumental opener. • Paintwork's instrumental is quite nice, I just wish it had a bit more to it • Cruiser's Creek was another song I didn't mind, and it was a good end to the album Overall, I don't think I outright disliked this album, but it's not my thing. It absolutely had its moments, and there were some really nice instrumentals and the vocals also suit the songs well. The more I listened to it the more I got into the vibe of the album. However, the vocal production and repetition throughout the album stopped me from truly enjoying it, and the length of some of the tracks didn't help at all. Favourite song: Mansion

Truly didn’t pay attention to this one

Favorite Track: Barmy

new wave, chaos rock, 1985 -> 2

Going in I have no idea what to expect --- I've never heard of this band or album. I'm guessing something vaguely punk rockish/indie from the album cover, which is probably a bad sign, but I have high hopes! Those hopes were not immediately dashed! The intro was good! I started getting worried by track 3, and by track 5 my hopes were indeed dashed. Do I need to keep listening to this, I asked myself? "Yes, yes I do," I answered. And you know what? It paid off --- as a test of mental resilience and commitment... Just kidding, it wasn't THAT bad. By track 6, L.A., my outlook was picking up a bit. Looks like it's the most famous song on the album and that makes sense. It's one of the most accessible (and of course by "most accessible" I mean, "least sucky"). But it was just one of a few outliers. I actually liked the track Couldn't Get Ahead. Paintwork, Petty (Thief) Lout were decent as well. Closest thing to this that I actually like: The Modern Lovers.

Yet another British post-punk band, sounds so much like the others. The only difference is that this album is perhaps even MORE one-note than the rest. Each song is monotonous and droning, lacking anything that keeps me interested. Would be a 1 star, but adding another star for at least being musical.

Come back to this

I couldn’t make it to the end. The songs are long and extremely repetitive.

This honestly got pretty annoying

Doesn’t do it for me. Repetitive and stabbing ad nauseam with lyrics and guitar. They found some little glimmer and just let that be it. Despite the mediocre nature it creates for the album.

Almost liked almost every song, and then didnt

Ehh.. not my favorite. I'm fatigued of the post-punk-indie-brit music. This was fine. It had some interesting tracks, but mostly kind of meh for me.

I liked the second half of the record better, but it's reeeeeeaaaaally looooong and there was no need for it. Kinda boring.

not my cup of tea

Interesting album, but nothing that really stood out.

Didn't really love the music but I like what this band stands for, whatever that is.

Favorite Track: Barmy

Nothing exceptional

is it possible to shout and mumble at the same time? the fall bravely endeavors to find out! noisy, ugly, unpleasant, musically just a handful of sludge to me.

Was this the same song for a whole album? Painwork was almost cool but got worse

Not for me.

New wave igen.

L.A. är den låt som tilltalar mig mest.

I’m into most of the stuff in this orbit but never really cared for The Fall. Not sure why that is, but they never clicked for me. To be fair though, this is the only album of theirs I listened to. I may like the later stuff better.

Rart album. Minner mer om americana-country enn punk.

Not my style.

Highlight: Mansion Could this be the album that killed British post-punk in the 80s? Perhaps. It borrows heavily from Wire, Television, The Cure and The Smiths. Great bass though. I'll revisit this album when I pull the other two by The Fall. Overall: 3/10

I think we’ve had so much post punk that’s it’s no longer making much of an impression to me. As we approach 900 I’m starting to feel the list padding, two Beta Band, three The Fall, that weird 90s morrisey one, the myriad of Elvis Costello really don’t need to be here.

Ho hum. It's a fair enough picture of how punk turned to depression rather than anger. But that wasn't a good thing was it? Musically a bit bland though bass player working hard to some effect. If you're in a hurry to die I'd skip this.

This may be obvious and possibly intentional, but if you've listened to 10 seconds of a song on this album you've heard the entire song. These are fragments of songs, which can work sparingly, but for EVERY track on a 60 min album to be this way does not work. If the song writing there this could have been a good album.

Meh - vanilla rock that doesn't move me..

Not my genre

Hmm yeah not a big fan of this at all. Repetitive in a Talking Heads way but not quite doing anything interesting with it.

Fenga ikkje denna karen her

I know there is definitely someone who has tried to get me really into The Fall, and while I am by no means committing to their humungous discography of music, I did want to check out this project to see what the hype is all about. This album feels like a much darker and moody version of Talking Heads with the very unique and off-putting vocals. This project is just about as weird as that last description should have you think it is, and if you are looking for a unique factor to the music then this does not disappoint. I definitely don't think I will fully get this project now, which is both a bit saddening and exciting, but unfortunately my score seems to reflect that in the current state. I can see why some people have quite a love for The Fall but I just don't quite see eye to eye on this oddity today...

Not a favorite - I like other music I've heard by The Fall, but not this!

Didnt fuck with it

Did not like it.

Proto-punk

I think most punk is just bad by design and this offers nothing to set it apart from its peers. is it still counter culture if you do the same thing as everyone around you? A lot of blurry noise.

Oh what’s this? A punk album! Not only that… an experimental punk album! I can’t think of anything worse

Interesting british Punkish album. Nothing out of the ordinary tho, lacks a better signer or destacable instrumentals. Or understandable lyrics :D

When Jens thought she talked about the season, sure, I totally understand why you might hear it that way. But when Jens thought she talked about the most overrated post-punk band of all time, it's like, no? Why would you *ever* think that's what I meant?

Never heard this one before and I could go back to that.

A couple of listenable tracks, but too inconsistent for me to really enjoy on the whole.

A couple of catchy moments, but nothing remotely special. 2 stars for trying.

Don’t hate it. But nothing really redeeming either.

There is some fun stuff on here that makes me give it a two out of five. Would probably love this in a bar at 2 am.

Definitely a vibe but not one I needed a whole album of....

This album had the potential to be pretty good if they had a different singer. And a different lyricist.

I’m so tired of 1980s British post-punk. I’m about to give up on this fucking project.

There's good punk and then there's bad punk...this leaned more toward bad punk. You can only get away with being repetitive if the song is short. Most of these songs are way too drawn out and hard to listen to at times.

bro das isch s dritte album vo dene huere tuble womer do druf hend. ha die erste scho recht ass gfunde. das isch früener. bombast tönt noch post punk jo. jo sie kreisched ume. oke stimmt s einte vo ihne vode 90er hani recht cool gfunde. barmy recht igängigi gitarremelodie. my new house isch no lustig? ich finds aber insgesamt ehner langwilig s album. paintwork cooli verschiedeni melodie. aber dass afoch en guy die ganz ziit am yappe isch findi chli müehsam.

When started listening i thought i heard the voice before even though i did not enjoy the sound so i'm guessing this dude has 2 albums on this list... think it was the drunk dude that couldn't sing but were elitistic about it. The band outshines him but the style but his vocal style has influenced other artists who actually made it better so i guess there is a silver lining. the 2 stars are for what came after this and the actually good band that had to play over his ramblings.

What was this again? Some shit punk again I think

A handful of the songs just go on too long. Didn't really dig this album.

Noisy and annoying. Off to yell at a cloud

How much of this punk rock crap is going to be on this list? I’ve heard enough.

The Fall are one of the most iconic underground bands of the 80's, hugely influential and yada yada yada. I was never a big fan. maybe they require some deeper listening. Four of their albums are here, so there will more chances. Key tracks: Barmy

skranglete greier.

Not my cup of tea at all. Musically fine but a pretty dull album

Not my cup of tea. Honestly got worse the more I listened which is not usually the case. Instrumentally I think it was fine though.

Simple hooks and inane lyrics repeated incessantly.

Very very long for what it is. This is the 3rd or 4th album they've had so far on this list and I think its reached the point where now I expect something more impressive. The idea of a third listen seems like punishment Its fine but its not exactly good.

Always a band better in mark e smiths mind than in reality. There are fun bits on this album but a lot of morose shouting. A band that a lot of chin strokers like. Really hard to love though.

Day594 - some say there’s more than one song on this album. but at least it’s long

Punk before it was punk leaves…much to be desired

This album hit the giddy heights of mehness. Forgot it was playing.

Nope. Nope nope nope. Bunch of repetitive pretentious cockwaddle.

As with most of these post punk acts the vocal style is so free it breaks all notions of harmony and cohesiveness. A shame because the instrumentals are fine for the most part until it starts to drag at the end

Ok sound but hella boring. Something tells me this list is going to have a ton of these uk post punk bands...

Too discordant for me but I did like the bass parts.

There's some musical ideas on here that hit for me, but almost across the board the vocals are doing it in for me, both male and female. The vocals are operating on a very B-52s wavelength, but without it being entertaining and fun. I'm finding for me to like post-punk, it needs to have goth or new wave influences in it. When it's just sitting in a purely punk side, it always comes off as irritating, overly full of itself, and nauseating. It doesn't have the drive or joy that punk does, and doesn't have the melancholy of new wave or goth. It always feels like they just took punk, and removed an essential component, while adding grating dissonance. That said, like I said, there are some ideas that hit, particularly the song L.A. where that hits in a more goth/new wave direction. And you can definitely hear this album's influence, whether its Sleater-Kinney (three days in a row I've mentioned them. You'd think they're the only band I've listened to), Sonic Youth, or Gorillaz. But it's gonna be a no from me, dawg. There's nothing here that entertains me, quite a bit that annoys me, and at over an hour long, it's too much. Side note, sad I couldn't keep the 4-streak going. But I did get five 4s in a row!

No thanks.

More generic rock; 2 hours is too long

low average not much creativity

# 541 : This Nation’s Saving Grace by The Fall This Nation’s Saving Grace is often hailed as a post-punk essential, but for me, it didn’t quite live up to the hype. The album has a raw, almost chaotic energy that makes it feel like the band was writing the songs as they recorded them. There’s a certain trashy charm to it—rough around the edges, but not without its moments of fun. That said, the lack of technical polish and structure made it hard to stay engaged. It feels more like a snapshot of a moment than a timeless piece of music. I’m not sure how many people would still genuinely enjoy this today. In the end, this one lands firmly on my personal list of “1001 Albums to AVOID Before You Die.” If you have to listen to this, watch out for : Barmy Listened : 08/08/2025

I love music from this era, and recently threw positive reviews at Duran Duran and The The. But for some reason, The Fall could never interest me. Maybe I miss the point, but it’s not particularly defiant, passionate or even fun; it’s just mediocre.

Yeah that’s not for me my friend. Too much wailing and thrashing.

Haven't heard this album or this band previously that I'm aware of.

It's fine. As with many non-mainstream albums on this list, it's obviously a product of it's time, but devoid of hooks to draw me in.

Songs just seem to have a guitar riff that repeats infinitely while a few words are spoken over it. Honestly, I was ready for it to be over by song 4, but it did get a bit better towards the second half. I guess I'd classify it as art-punk. I just can't tell if I don't like it, or if I just don't like all of it at once.

Apart from Mansion and L.A., none of the tracks really spoke to me. Never been into UK punk or post-punk and this album didn't really do anything to make me enjoy the genre more. Some songs are groovy but the production is lacking, and the same could be said about the singer's vocals

I did not hate the music, and at times quite liked it, but I just cannot stand the vocals. Especially with a runtime of over an hour, the instrumentals can not safe it completely.

This is what you get when your great idea while under the influence comes to fruition. I wonder what they sound like when they’re sober?

Not really my thing. Could enjoy it a bit as background music but wouldn’t be something I would choose. Have found some of the songs getting stuck in my head a bit though. Fav song: Mansion Least fav: Couldn’t Get Ahead

Every song seemed to have one too many things going on (maybe that's what happens when you get through so many band members). All a bit too chaotic and noisy for me to really like. Favourite song: Petty (Thief) Lout Least: Bombast

6 years on from live at the witch trials they appear to have mostly abandoned the freewheeling air that was about the only they had going for them, while mark smith has committed to keeping his vocals solidly in the "forgettable to grating" range

One of The Fall's better albums but still not a band for me. Never really got the Manc angst

Too long and not particularly compelling.

Insufferably boring and repetitive

Good songs, but a forgettable listening experience.

Ehhhh I don't know about this one. The lyrics were indeterminable and the music itself didn't make up for the lack of coherency. It mostly consists of repeating loops with some noises placed over top. I've found that these post-punk bands are all just very mediocre sounding to me and this falls in family. Standout songs were "Vixen" - it got a little bluesy here and the music didn't sound like absolute crap - "Rollin' Danny" - which is a cover.... and "Cruiser's Creek" I don't think I needed to hear this before my death. I really don't like the vocals or the lead singers voice/style. It sounds very rough and goes on for way too long. Really flip flopped between a 1 or 2 star rating on this one but went with a 2 for some ok moments and not being totally irredeemable, but I won't be revisiting any of it. It was weird, they were trying to be weird and that's cool but its not my favorite.

Derivative

Shoegaze punk. Never heard of the band or this album before. Not necessarily a bad album but didn’t resonate with me. I’m not cool enough to like this album although I’m guessing more than 50% of people who like this album are to be pretentious than actually like it. Little hooks or melody. Very repetitive

Good sounding instrumentally but Mark E Smiths voice fucking grates me, absolute shot vocals but at least good instrumental

Don't love it; don't hate it. It's all right. 2.5 stars.

A relatively post-punk record, this is one that I really wanted to like more than I did. There’s a fair bit of goth influence on this album, but I’m not sure it’s the particular flavour of that that speaks to me. It’s got all the classic elements, chaotic guitar riffs, driving basslines that have no shortage of groove, but the vocals just don’t really do it for me. I’m not even really sure how to articulate what exactly I dislike about the vocals on this record, but I just don’t vibe with it. Half the songs almost sound like the Beatles trying to play gothwave? Not sure, won’t be listening again. 2* for the effort.

Not really into punk

I didn’t hate the entire thing I guess. But god some of it was just annoying and extremely repetitive.

did not finish. got (almost) an hour in and did NOT mess with it (there was over an hour left). decided it wasn’t worth my time. was just okay at best, maybe disc 2 would have been better. but i guess i’ll never know. 2/5.

This one's pretty bad. Irritating singer, repetitive music, no clear talent anywhere that I could see, far too long an album. Why do I have to listen to it before I die?

I wish I liked this more. It started good, but lost my intrest as it went on

Spooky rock opening is a bad omen. This has a Velvet Underground/Lou Reed feel to it, Talking Heads too. What You Need is annoying, it's just the bassline over and over and over and over and talking. The Fall has three albums on this list...this list is too British and too middle aged. There's a rockabilly/Chris Isaak/David Lynch soundtrack vibe to Vixen, must have been the time period. This is terrible, repetitive post punk nonsense. This feels very dated. It's the kind of exhausting album that rock critics fall all over themselves to praise but that no one really likes. It's the music of college sophomores. This is a long album as well. You may be Damo Suzuki, but you are also terrible. I am counting the minutes until this is over.

pretty good!! a little repetitive at times, but overall good!

It's kinda half baked, sometimes they have something but it goes no where Will I listen to again: 6%

There were a couple songs okay enough to keep this from a 1. I don’t get the appeal of listening to someone unintelligibly mumble over the same beat for 5+ minutes

Atonal garbage.

Couple of really good tracks, I like the jazz influence hip hop used to have. Kind of monotone rapping of the lyrics, not much energy. Good album, not great.

Busy. They had a unique sound and I wanted to like it but they were just a bit too unpolished and meandered too much in a lot of songs. Lead singer talking in short phrases for much of the song isn’t very interesting.

I liked the instrumental components in this. The repetitive, strained lyrics made some of it a tough listen though. Would need to be in a specific mood.

Why did I need to listen to this?

Falls flat without a saving grace. 2.5/5

Repetitive and dull - I appreciate some will love stuff like this but it’s not for me. Can’t see why it’s on the list.

Yet another album I feel like I’d really like if they had literally any other vocalist. I turned it off on “My New House”. But the backing tracks are great.

Started off wondering if this was a 5 star for me. By the middle everything got more annoying. Felt more like noise than music.

The Wiki has this listed as "Post-Punk", which I can understand why it has that label. The singer wants it to be punk, but the band insists on something more pop. The combo is not really for me. There wasn't anything too terrible on this album, but nothing inspiring either. L.A. is a decent enough add to the 1001 playlist. But the album as a whole gets ~ 2 Stars

Punk B52s

Not really my thing. Kind of forgettable

I don't know much. but now I know he's excited about his new house.

Just alright, maybe I'll have to give it another go though, not much really stood out for me. Vocals were kinda bad. Just a mid tempo 80s punk sound

Certainly better than the previous album entry on the list from The Fall. Much more coherent and put together. I can see the influence this band may have had on the punky alt-rock scene and bands like Spoon, LCD Soundsystem, The Faint, Moving Units, etc. probably give them credit. Could have shaved down the songs on TNSG and the record would have been better. Adding in Brix was a plus for the band as she brought some good guitar riffs and lead support. "Paintwork" lands top track spot for me. I didn't struggle through this one but also won't return to it on purpose...1.95 stars.

I'm not sure what about This Nation's Saving Grace made it something I need to listen to before I die or why The Fall has 3 albums on this list. The prior entries have mostly been mediocre British punk. This album was more of the same with no stand out tracks for me. Some of the songs were redundant and annoying at times. Overall it landed firmly in the "yawn" category where I'm not sure why this deserves an entry. Any favor I had with The Fall has been eroded by having to listen to 3 relatively mediocre albums already. I'd vote to remove this one personally. 2.16 stars

Not much grabbed me with this one. Very forgettable.

I like this kind of music, and The Fall in general, but this was kind of just...there?

Honestly kind of a disappointment after the last The Fall album we got on here - The Infotainment Scan definitely felt more cohesive, and here there's so many points where the lyrics are so background you can barely tell centre there and the music just becomes the same thing over and over. Not in a dub, hypoxic loop kind of way, more like a bored, noodling kind of way. I hope this makes sense, in not sure it does, but this is much less of an album I would want to come back to.

Not for me, second half was a bit better

Reminds me of when I used to go to the pub and they had open mic night. There was always that one table which was obviously the bands family and friends, while everyone else didn't give a s*** and hoped the next band was better.

Post Punk, ben benieuwd. Instrumentaal bevalt dit album me echt heel goed. FAVO: Barmy, Spoilt Victorian Child, Rollin'Dany

This album lacks what at least "The Infotainment Scan" has, which was some decent instrumental work. Both, however, are plagued by boring vocals.

I didn't find this as unpleasant as some other post-punk I've listened to, but I didn't connect with it at all. It was just sort of buzzy and too low tempo for me.

A hard listen

it is ok

Random thoughts: * Drone-y and almost all the songs were indistinguishable. They did have a touch of Velvet Underground. * The last 2 songs were interesting since they incorporated some different musical styles. * Julian suffered through this with me on a road trip and he will not be listening to this again and he agreed with my 2-star rating. He really wanted to rate it but I wanted to add the comments first.

It kind of reminds me of like maybe The Kinks? Had some moments that were a bit frenetic. Idk, the energy of this album just didn't jive with my ears. 2.5

Ok well I hate this a little bit less than Live at the Witch Trials. It still has that awful underproduced and unpolished sound, and it's still messy as hell. At least this one has the odd moment here or there that's actually kinda cool.

Not for me

Tried making it through the whole thing. Couldn’t do it. Don’t enjoy the speaking singing style at all. I understand it’s his style but it doesn’t sound very good and seems very low effort. Instrumentals were fine but nothing interesting going on.

Meh. Reminded me of the Stronks but worse. Not groovy enough to be my taste of alternative.

enjoyed the instrumentals, was not able to focus on it though, not for me

it was aight but i prob won’t be back listening to this anytime soon

Ovaj projekt će me ubiti...

Ok 2/5

2 - I really like some of the instrumental riffs but to e vocal style is a bit horrible to listen to at times

I sure was not a fan of the vocals here. They waned on me so much. Inarticulate and boring. And I know in punk music the vocals shouldn't matter, but they do in fact, and I just hated them. Outside of the vocals, I enjoyed This Nation's Saving Grace. I don't know how remarkable it was, but the beats were good. The tone could become very dark, always a highlight. A lot of the music itself was very strong and engaging, too. On the whole, the lyrics weren't remarkable--well, that depended on how much I could make out. 2.5
