Reviews (page 3 of 7)

There is some good music on this album, but, overall, it sounds even more fleeting than some of her other albums from this time, such as "Ray of Light" which preceded "Music" and was produced almost entirely by William Orbit, which gave it even more of a late 90's electronica feel. And I believe that "Confessions on a Dance Floor" is more fun (a few albums later in her discography), as it has more of an 80's electro feel.

The most intensely 2000 album there's ever been? There are some bangers in here for sure, a lot of filler (much like Madonna herself these days), and it's kinda samey after a while. a lot of it sounds like scissor sisters but not quite as good - but then Madonna was there first. I feel like there's a lot better Madonna records out there than this one, but this is a fun time nonetheless

De draft punk aux Beatles en passant par Lil Wayne et Natasha Bedingfield ça va dans tous les sens mais c'est pas mauvais...

There were points where it was pretty good and some points it was pretty bad

Well produced, Madonna and William Orbit defo have had an influence on modern house. I like Madonna but I just think a pop album, more than any other genre, need bops. It needs catchy riffs and tricks. I enjoyed this but very little stayed with me, except for the titular track. 6.5 / 10 Best track/s: Paradise, Amazing, Music

OAD #190, Music, was better than OAD #176, Ray of Light. One thing I can say about 2000s Madonna is that she knew how to pick producers. The music is good, if a little safe. I just can't get over how inauthentic Madonna herself sounds, though somehow she manages to pull out two solid tracks at the very end of the album. I didn't listen to the bonus cover of "American Pie," and I don't plan to. And the title reminds me of Bowen Yang's hilarious 2021 Iceberg sketch on SNL. His album's name was also Music. So stupid. Box checked. I don't care. Three stars.

I really liked this album. It was a Madonna's last strong entry into the dance world, or at least that I'm familiar with. Really like the electronic side of this album, good beats, nice writing and production.

I had to laugh at the album summary describing it as 'Experimental', but I thought this was a fairly standard pop record, with the occasional production flourish making it at least a little interesting. The American Pie cover was absolute dog shit, but as a bonus track I won't penalise as much as I'd like to for having the whole thing end on a sour note.

Pretty good. I was surprised with how unique this sounded. Don’t like every song, but most have something interesting about them. Paradise almost sounds like a Damaged Bug song.

Didn’t mind it but that American Pie cover is ROUGH

I'm not huge on pop but this was fine... Until that cover of American pie. Oof.

Nice pop/dance album.

Not what I was expecting in a bad way. I was not that interesting or catchy as a pop album should be, it had some good tracks but I was hoping to get a hidden gem, but it was average at best.

muy popopopopop pero cool

Not much of a Mag fan, only slightly irritating and tolerable pop music, couple of her 'hits' on here, points lost for auto-tuning and the American Pie cover, a 'just scrapped in' ⭐⭐⭐

This of all Madonna albums?

It's really well made but it's still boring, commercial pop music. But that's OK, nothing bad about music that people enjoy and makes them move! I'll give it a 3 because it's much better than most current day equivalents (sorry, Taylor).

it’s fine. madonna has stronger, sharper records // fun, a little sexy, clearly built for movement, dancing // very of its time, but in a way i enjoy rather than resent // production leans into club pop without fully committing to risk, but! vocoder production is good and enjoyable // music title track is a great opener, immediate and confident // runaway lover is underrated, playful and loose // what it feels like for a girl is doing something most mainstream pop girlies today wish they were brave enough to attempt; vulnerable, political, restrained; kind of a softer courtney love energy // paradise might be my fav // gone would have been a perfect closer; reflective, melancholy, genuinely earned // then american pie happens ): the original song is sacred, it is a cultural artifact, it is already complete; covering it adds nothing, reveals nothing, improves nothing it flattens the album’s emotional landing and feels wildly unnecessary ending the record there feels like drinking a beer and waking up with a headache // overall enjoyable, occasionally great, but not essential madonna

The production is annoying and outdated, but the songs themselves are pretty good. 2.5/5.0: Mixed

Jeden z jej najlepších.

i really like some of the more introspective moments on this album, some surprising freshness for a pop album (Gone has got some real trip-hop vibes, Amazing is giving proto-hyper pop).

Que moderna ela, parece muito uma vibe Britney. A mais famosa eu nunca tinha ouvido. Gostei da versão da American Pie dela. Darei um 3*, músicas boas, mas não me chamou muita atenção.

Meh. A fun listen, but not for me. The end of the album really fell off for me and felt way too disjointed.

I had it better in mind. 2,7

The fact that this album was mostly produced by Mirwais is really what gives it any major credibility. Beyond that, 25 years later, I don’t think this album has aged all that well. It sounds very stereotypical of late 90s and early 2000s pop that was trying to merge with the EDM scene of that era. Overall, I highly doubt I’ll ever revisit this album in the future.

Very interesting - this was my first time ever listening to Madonna in a real way. I’m not sure what I was expecting but it didn’t interest me in the way I thought it might. I can only imagine that this was influential for its time but personally not my favorite.

Thought this was really fun. Lot a stuff I wasn't as keen on, but some of the tracks are really smooth. The ones produced by William Orbit especially so.

Was dreading having to listen to this but it was more fun and better than expected

When it bangs, it bangs. The bangers are really damn good, a couple of Madonna’s best singles here. There are 2/3 tracks that really don’t live up to the high standard of the rest of the album but I really enjoyed most of it. I personally prefer William Orbit’s production to Mirwais- it’s more enveloping and immersive but these are small things. A great pop album and a great timestamp in Madonna’s career. Best: What it Feels Like For a Girl Worst: I Deserve It

First half of this album was definitely a 4/5 for me but the last half realllllly dragged for me. A lot of real fun and experimental production on this thing that had me grooving on the better tracks. The more acoustic guitar centered tracks really feels like the progenitor to the dreaded 'mid' pop music that would follow in the 2000s. I feel like slower tracks aren't Madonna's forte.

The cover had me expecting a completely different sound. Liked some songs, hated others. Middle of the road for me

The cover of American Pie was definitely a choice, and not really one I approve of. The rest of the album was alright. Definitely a Madonna reinvention album. I do prefer her mid-80s stuff though.

I’ve never been much of a Madonna fan, but I didn’t hate this music. I thought the production was fantastic, I think it’s different than what I typically stereotype Madonna and her music and considering this is her 8th album, it’s easy to write off a lot of artists at that point.

There was a time when Madonna was of universal significance, where everyone knew her, listened to her, bought her records. Even your Nanna knew "Material Girl" In more recent years, everyone still knows her, but less as an artist and more as a punchline. This album comes about half way between these two extremes. She was still selling records, still getting critical praise, but the days when a new Madonna Video was an event were long behind her. She was coming off the success of "Ray of Light" and seemingly could do no wrong. But Music is nowhere near as strong as that album. Ray of Light had similar studio production antics, but had them applied to actual songs, with Verses, Choruses and Bridges. The tracks on Music don't seem like songs. They're more like beats with words over the top. I imagine that Music is quite the influential album. If Ray of Light was a bit like Madonna catching up with what was happening at the time. Bjork had released Homogenic, Kylie Minogue had released Impossible Princess, Missy Elliot had released Super Duper Fly, all highly produced electronica. But Music was Madonna pushing the things she tried on Ray of Light further into the future. It's not as strong as Ray of Light, but it's probably more significant.

A pretty interesting pop album and quite a different sound from Madonna

I was in high school and college when Madonna first came out with her self-titled debut album followed by Like A Virgin and True Blue - and she became a superstar over the course of that time She was so pervasive and popular that you couldn't not be aware of her at the time. However, I wasn't digging it and never got into her. It just wasn't for me I guess. It seemed it was meant for the girls and not for a guy. Somehow when the Ray of Light album came out in 1998, I finally connected with one of her works and really liked a bunch of songs on that album. Maybe we just intersected since she was having kids around that time and so was I. This one (Music) came out as the next one after Ray of Light and so I gave it a chance. First three tracks don't do it for me, but I like 6 of the last 7 songs. I like the acoustic guitar + electronic vibe of tracks like "I Deserve It", "Nobody's Perfect', "Don't Tell Me", and "Gone". Plus "Amazing" and "Paradise (Not For Me)" are pretty cool. I am actually a little surprised that this album is on this list. I didn't realize it was considered "critically acclaimed". Good for her to have a few on here. Bottom line recommendation - if you are only familiar with Madonna's most famous stuff from the 80s and early 90s and that never grabbed you - give this one a chance. Liked songs on Spotify: 6/10 Rating: 3/5

HAHAHAH ich hasse und liebe dance HAHAHAHAH WIE FUNNNNN??? I deserve it isch chli ruhiger aber reecht catchy de gsang bi paradise ischmer jz chli too much aber allgemein findis album so vill cooler alsi denkt hett american pie HASSI hmm guets 3 oder knapps 4i? hetmi uf jede fall positiv überrascht

Veel gexpirimenteerd met elektronische sounds Soms leuk soms niet Mooie stem

This album feels like it is desperately trying to re-capture former pop-star glory with mixed results. A couple of memorable tracks, one real turd, and some formulaic dance pop electronica. Otherwise known as everything Madonna has done since the 1980s. 2.5⭐️

-this is the first Madonna album i’ve heard in full, the other being Ray Of Light. was excited because the title track is one of my favorite Madonna songs. and admittedly i now feel that track does most of the heavy lifting on here -definitely not quite on the level of Ray Of Light (neeed to listen to that one again soon!) but still thought it was solid. i liked that she continued with the trip hop influence -Favorites: Music, What It Feels Like For A Girl

Solid album. Nobody’s Perfect was my highlight. Good 3.8

My first Madonna album for this project, and sadly a disappointment for me. I assumed some of her albums would be on the list, but this is one I never listened to before so I had no clue what to expect. My main impression was that the production choices made this, at times, unlistenable for me. I liked (and even loved in the case of I Deserve It and Gone) the songs that were left to be themselves, but the ones that were over-produced with auto-tune or too many blips and bleeps just got annoying. I rarely skip past a song in the project, but I was tempted to during Impressive Instant and Nobody's Perfect. These were just abysmal. They could've been decent, especially the latter. Overall I wish this was an album I could've liked a lot or even loved, but instead it's going to get a 3 due to my very mixed feelings. Somehow others got to listen to her version of American Pie. I didn’t. And that’s ok with me.

Madonna's "music" delivers on it's namesake. Great music? not so much. Awful music? not really. But is it music? Yes

A few good songs, an honestly pretty decent background music while working, but not quiet enough to bump it to 4

This music is actually pretty interesting, but it has aged just about as well as a lot of graphic design and other art from the year 2000. I was pleasantly surprised overall, but I wouldn't count this as a favorite.

Madonna reinventing herself. It’s not bad but I like her classic stuff better.

The list has Like a Prayer, Ray of Light and this one. Which tells us more about the weird bias the critics who put the list together. In the early 2000's there was an obsession critics had with Madonna's later career output. I mean, this is fine, a good album. But no True Blue or Like a Virgin are in there? Anyway, definitively some good songs on here. This guy Ahmadzaï who she hired to write the songs had some cool ideas.

I didn’t mind it but some songs felt very much of the time (Music in particular). Also Madonna has a great voice, the auto tune on a few of the songs felt cheesy and dated. Favorite song was Paradise (not for me)

Not her best

It’s Madonna, so diva obvs. But I’m not a fan of dance music as a whole

Madonna's eighth record has her primarily working with producer Mirwais Ahmadzaï and, among their collaborations here, the most interesting are the those that push the furthest into experimental territory (such as "Impressive Instant"). Ahmadzaï's fractured production techniques keep the songs moving (even on tracks that consists of basically one chord). In addition, when Madonna uses less obvious vocal techniques such as hushed vocals or spoken word sections (such as on "Paradise (Not For Me)"), it works remarkably well. The more this album aims towards the conventional however, the less compelling it becomes. The tracks co-produced by William Orbit are especially guilty of this - they are the blandest and least memorable cuts on this record.

She was an hour late when I saw her and had to cut like a prayer. Anyway this album was mid

Odd music

Pretty cool dance music.

Madonna wanted something new again after her best album in her career, Ray of Light. She first started to work again with William Orbit but soon ditched him and worked with Ahmadzaï on this album (two songs were written by Orbit). The end product isn't bad, but it's far from the quality of Ray of Light. The hit singles are all great (Music, Don't Tell Me, What it Feels Like For a Girl). I especially like the remix version of What it Feels like...to which one of the best video clip from that era was made. The early 2000s autotune on some songs are not my cup of tea, though, while some other songs remind me more of the songs from Ray of Light, but with not the same quality (the song Amazing reminds me of Beautiful Stranger). The album is stylish, and groovy but style is more important here than substance.

Electronic dance pop. Not a bad album, some very good songs and some that are meh. Some tracks remind me of a Sheryl Crow song more than a Madonna song? Notable tracks include Music, I Deserve It, Nobody’s Perfect, Don’t Tell Me, What It Feels Like For A Girl.

I mean... good-ish. It's an interesting moment in time and decently done. Felt a little like she was trying to capture something - a feeling and a persona in the late 90's club scene.

Definetly not my style, but it has something that makes you move and dance.

WOW that's a lot of bad autotune! If you scraped off the 2000 crust here there's some good songs. The American Pie cover is nice enough, albeit a week closer. Not sure what theming they were going for with the cover. Doesn't seem to fit with the rest of the album.

(do they start everyone off with this album lmao?) Maybe not surprisingly for me, this is extremely competent pop album and right up my alley (if slightly too polished). Eminently listenable earworms, consistent over a highly collaborative effort (I recognized Guy Sigsworth's fingerprint immediately on "What It Feels Like For A Girl".)

Really fascinating how much processing and effects they shoved onto this album

I really don't know Madonna, but this was neat. It sounds futuristic to me, 25 years after its release date.

It was fine

None of the Madonna bangers I already knew were on here but I thought it was alright

++: Music, Impressive Instant, Runaway Lover, Amazing, What It Feels Like for a Girl +: Nobody's Perfect, Don't Tell Me, Paradise (Not for Me), Gone +-: I Deserve It 7,6/10

She was supposed to work with Aphex Twin on one track. Imagine. 3/5

When this album first came out I didn't get into it. I think I was quickly turned off because the lyrics to "Music" are so "koombaya" and cheesy. Now that I'm hearing the full album, I still feel that way, though I appreciate the music production more. I think I'd like this album a lot more with different lyrics and a different vocalist.

A couple of solid singles surrounded by synth and autotune.

After listening to so many straight electronica, the influences here are a lot more obvious than when I heard this 25 years ago. That said, beyond the still-great singles (Music, Don't Tell Me, What it Feels Like for a Girl) it also veers between bad (Nobody's Perfect, Paradise) to dated (all that autotune.)

Madge does dance - she is polished at this point in her career but there just isn't enough soul in it.

A few tracks I liked. Some of the dance stuff wasn’t my vibe. I will always love Don’t Tell Me.

I have, of course, heard the title track. I did not associate it with Madonna, though, but with the entire girl-pop 2000s sound, which is about half of this album. I feel like in retrospect, it pulled off a bullseye for what the era was asking for. What's going on with production here, it's crisp and funky and very electronic, where does the cowgirl even fit in, it's like Beyonce was taking notes for a post-pandemic banger. This feels like it inclines heavy on the vocals though, especially on the second half, a few overproduced bits that feel a little cheesy, the album is maybe a song or two too long. This is not typical sound, I don't think I want any form of physical copy, but I might listen to it when I'm in a 2000s pop production mood. 3/5

Marginal Album, not one of her best.

Music was probably one of the first instances I remember hearing of Madonna still putting out new music. But why does almost every pop star feel like they need to do a country/country adjacent album at least once in their career? Aside from her released singles, this album was pretty forgettable for me. Best: Music Worst: Paradise (Not for Me)

I don't mind Madonna, and was actually surprised by the second half of the album. Unfortunately the title song was a meme for some of us at company I used to work for (one which will remain unnamed). "Don't tell me to stop Tell the rain not to drop"

3 1/2 Stars: It's undeniable what a huge commercial and critical success Ray of Light was at the time. This follow up found our Queen of Pop dabbling in European EDM and it's really kinda strange on one hand, but pretty great on the other. Don't Tell Me and Music are highlights, but it's the dirty electro sound of Impressive Instant that gets me. I love this album as the marker it serves in my own life.

This is a fine pop album with some forays into electronica/dance and some interesting production choices. It's very much Y2K era sounding and doesn't do much for me one way or another. Some of it is pretty annoying but made up for on songs like "Music," "Don't Tell Me," and "Gone."

She wanna be carti so bad

After coming off what I consider to be her magnum opus with Ray of Light, Madonna decides to revitalize her sound once again for the year millennium with her very boldly titled project, Music. This project unalike Ray of Light, feels like a staple of its' time and really starts to show the downfall of Madonna's music quality as her futuristic and forward thinking sounds are finally starting to catch back up with her. Don't get me wrong there are some great songs on here like Don't Tell Me, but for the most part I was expecting a lot more from here. This project for the most part has a pretty consistent identity, but when it tries something completely different it really loses itself in a way I really didn't think Madonna would let slide so easily. It also doesn't help the beginning of this album seems very all over the place despite the high quality shown off, but thankfully it does manage to catch itself later down the tracklist. I appreciate what Madonna had in mind with this project but its' own worst enemy happens to be itself and the tracklisting of this project. Would it have killed anyone if this was 2 songs shorter, because if it simply removed Impressive Instant and Amazing this easily would be one of her better releases.

The sound of this album took me totally off guard as I didn't expect an electropop album from Madonna. But I did like it. I think some of the mixes between the trance sound, the glitch effects and Madonna's voice are done really well. 'Music', 'Runaway Lover' and 'Amazing' are the best tracks to show how well the blend works. Unfortunately, not all the tracks work as well. From the point you reach 'Amazing', the rest of the songs slow things down and abandon all the interesting electronic elements, and feel way more standard or commercial, and don't offer anything appealing in their own, except for 'What It Feels Like for a Girl', which not only has a great message, but also has a great electronic base. The worst tracks, in my opinion, are 'Impressive Instant' and "Nobody's Perfect" because the have way too much autotune. I don't usually have a problem with autotune, but I don't see it working with her, specially when her voice is as amazing as it is. Overall, a decent electropop album.

pretty mid, it would be good to throw on in the background

Just feel like Madge ran out of ideas by the late 90s and early 2000s. I'm a mystic! I'm a cowgirl! I'll do house music with a country theme! I'll sing in French! This hasn't aged well — especially the Don McClean "American Pie" cover which is probably the worst career choice Madonna ever made, outside of getting a gold tooth.

Review by Me (2.5/5)

This album is so "of its time". This is absolutely what the year 2000 sounded like. Overall this wasn't for me. But I'm not exactly her target market.

This is a solid album from the Queen of Reinvention. However, knowing how the late 90’s/early 2000 played out, everyone was doing an EDM album: Nelly, all the DJs, Sarah McLachlin, even NuMetal kings Korn did an EDM inspired album. As such, I am not a sure this carved new stone, but was more of Madonna keeping up with the times. There is some country influence, like on Don’t Yell Me, and we can’t forget the T-Pain-like autotune everyone was doing on Nobody’s Perfect. There are some good songs here, so no means an insult and I did enjoy listening to it. Her early work was revolutionary; Ray of Light a personal exploration. This album feels like Madonna was just trying to be relevant as an “older” pop star.

While I appreciate the musical diversity present on this album, it certainly has its share of highs and lows. Also gets stronger as the album goes; each song is better than the last in my opinion. Something for everyone, but not all for me. Top tracks: Don't Tell Me, Paradise (Not for Me), Gone

The album wasn’t bad, but it was not something I would listen to on purpose. I liked What it feels like for a girl. Everything else sounds very clubby and gay. That’s not bad, but it’s not my vibe

I always liked "Music." "What It's Like for a Girl" is really sweet and beautiful. Ngl, brought a tear to my eye. Melancholic and moving. Not bad, but a lot tracks, especially on first half, kinda mush together. Production is very early-2000s, which isn't bad in-itself but kinda feels generic and pre-set heavy. Very in-the-box. Second half gets a bit more interesting and diverse. "Paradise (Not for Me)" is cool. Last song doesn't sound like a Madonna song. It's okay. I wouldn't mind if someone else put this on. I'm not likely to ever put it on again, but it's not bad. Just not a whole lot of distinction between tracks.

Solid album. Didn't love the whisper stuff but some songs are real bops

True. This is considered music. Not great music but mid music.

When I think of Madonna, I think of the 80's, and this release shows how unfair that is to Madonna. Here she is, at the precipice of a new millennia making some great dance music.

Not for me

more madonna? okay. for whatever reason, she's suddenly a cowgirl. don't judge the album cover, because this is a electronic dance pop album. i'm... not sure what to think of this album. remember when i reviewed "ray of light" and i almost treated it like madonna's swan song at times? this is exactly why i treated it like such. this album is... kinda baffling to me. futuristic country music...? i don't know... sometimes it's an electronic disco party. sometimes it's a forgettable song that would be on a dance dance revolution songlist. sometimes it's a slow jam with autotune. it's a very strange palette of sound, and honestly i don't know if i feel a lot of it. there's a small portion of the album that i would call underrated, but for the most part i just sat there going... "....huh?"

It’s just an average studio album added to the list simply because she’s madonna 3/5

On the one hand, I can practically taste the pre-9/11 positivity across this album... this music harkens back to a simpler time in America. Madonna's vocal performance is stellar -- except for a handful of instances where she appears to have used auto-tune, which feels like a baffling decision in retrospect. I assumed that would have been a producer's decision, but upon doing research, I was amazed to see it was the opposite: Madonna wanted to use auto-tune, and the producer agreed to it despite his disagreement. Wow. Okay. Then again, other aspects of the production haven't aged all that well. Decisions to 'over-produce' which feel aggravating to listen to and distract from Madonna's singing. But I'd argue the good choices still outweigh the not so good.. it's a fun listen, and there is stuff beneath the surface to grasp on to if you're listening for it.

Not a fan.

This was not as bad as I thought it would be. There are a few catchy beats and some interesting melodies to be found on this album. The title track is pretty annoying, but the album starts well overall. The occasional dud track is not a surprise. It’s a bit safe, but it’s a lot better than some of the albums I have been presented with recently. However, Madonna has better albums than this, so it’s hard to be too generous.

first listen super meh

It was okay. There are better Madonna albums.

Not at all what I expected when I think of Madonna. Very interesting beats and style. Good enough for me!

Not even close to being my normal type of music that I usually choose to listen to, but this album was actually filled with some jams and I highly enjoyed this. Very happy that it wasn't an hour plus long album. Was the perfect length for this genre.

Musically, this album is very cool. You can easily hear how it was ahead of the curve on a lot of 2000s musical trends. Lyrically, however, I found this album to be really juvenile and uninteresting. Everything she is saying is fine, but it feels like she has said it all before at this point in her career. Most of the rhymes are low-hanging fruit and a lot of the themes are pretty predictable.

Music is a great track Too electronic for me, but I can see why it was chosen for this list 3

I feel like this is a response to Cher's "Believe" album. The timeline somewhat fits, and there's at least one song with the autotune CRANKED like Cher's title track. But there's some good stuff in here, and I kinda get why it was put on the list (and subsequently taken off). "Gone" is probably my favorite track, but I think it would have worked better with actual drums and instrumentation as opposed to the programming. It just sounds less... real. I can see why it was pulled, it feels a little similar to "Ray of Light," although it varies more than that did. I think the song "Music" would have been more effective for me if it just stopped instead of fading out. The other song which I enjoyed was "I Deserve It", I thought that was an interesting, contemplative song. So the songs that were not so upbeat I actually enjoyed more. Who would have thought?

The title track is so fun and I feel like it was such an unexpected hit. But I don't really love the rest of the album and how synth heavy and autotune heavy (or whatever voice effects they were using then). Ray of Light was a cool reinvention of Madonna, this one gets a bit over the top - looking at you Impressive Instant, Nobody's Perfect, and Paradise. I did like some of the softer pieces like I Deserve It, Gone, Don't Tell Me, and What it Feels Like for a Girl (the latter two were successful singles, for good reason). Amazing is a good upbeat tune, that doesn't overdo the synth. I know she was trying to set herself apart in a new genre and stay hip with the young kids, and maybe the fact it doesn't totally resonate with me shows I didn't keep up with the times. Started to creep toward 3.5 but didn't feel like going up to 4.

Despite never previously liking Madonna, I've tried to be open minded. Imagine my surprise when I really enjoyed Like a Prayer and Ray of Light, leading to 4 stars for each. But I knew I was in trouble when my wife (a Madonna fan) told me that Music was the last Madonna album she bought because she didn't like all the autotune. Since autotune is an automatic one star reduction (at best) for me, I knew this one was going to be tough. Overall, I'd say there's enough good on the album to (mostly) override my distaste for autotune and, dare I say it, the autotune in the title track was subtle and even worked as a good effect for a change. After I got through the first half, I figured easy 3, maybe even a shot at a 4. Then I got to Nobody's Perfect. HOLY CRAP WHAT A HORRIBLE SONG. Awful autotune, nauseating key sound. Like I literally will remove a star JUST FOR THIS AWFUL TRACK. Wait, then Don't Tell Me - wtf, they purposely made it sound like the track was glitching?? I had to listen on another service just to make sure there wasn't something wrong with the Apple Music track. Who on earth thought that was a good idea?? The rest of the album was ok - nothing groundbreaking, but catchy enough (although Paradise had more autotune/electronic effects on the vocals than I'd like, which was a shame, because I liked the atmosphere of the song). I don't know if those two awful tracks are enough to bring me down to a 2 on the album. I'll go with the 3 because in general the album was growing on me with each listen, and got better on close listen. Feels wrong to give it a 2 in that case - but those two tracks alone make it no more than a 3. Favorite tracks: Music, Amazing, What It Feels Like for a Girl, Gone.

I have to be a big honest boy and say I did not listen to this album at all, however ‘Music’ and ‘Don’t tell me’ are absolute bangers. Off pure instinct this gets a 3 from me

So I think my review here is a bit biased because I remember buying this album when I was 9 and playing it on my sony walkman thinking I was just so cool. I think what made it a big deal to me was that Madonna was already known, she was a huge star but she wasn't my generation's pop star until this album and then she belonged to us too. 2000 being the year it was, this album was weird and wonderful and futuristic and Madonna had gone from 80s icon to stepping straight into the next millennium with a lot of autotune and for some reason dressed as a cowboy but I was here for it and loved it. This was one of the first albums I bought myself making the decision myself for what I wanted to listen to and feeling like I was growing up. Obviously 'What It Feels Like For A Girl' spoke to me in my little 10 year old world and I felt very adult. So I think that this review is a lot more about how music impacts certain parts of your life and it can be really quite mediocre verging on pretty bad music (apart from Don't Tell Me, that is just a standalone wonderful pop song and I won't hear anything against this) but because of what it was to you at that time, you can listen and still singalong to too many of the words you care to admit and it makes you smile. I guess it's good to remember that music has a role in this way too and I'm glad that this has led me to listen to this album 20 years later.

Not great

Typical late 90s/early 00s pop sound with a few new pieces of production technology being shown off. The music is engaging and energetic, and Madonna has a charming voice. She has that showgirl sound, even in the 2000s. Decent record.

Some classics, some meh

Ok - but a bit disappointing and not particularly inspiring

Two good songs, rest kind of boring.

Not bad. Amazing was pretty decent and I quite enjoyed Paradise (Not for Me). The rest varied from okay but not my thing to eh, I don't particularly like this song. 2.5/5 stars.

Une pop électronique chargée et un brin désincarnée. La meilleure chanson est probablement American Pie, soit une reprise de Don McLean, qui transmet une émotion vivante et articulée

Of course, very catchy. Madonna is and has been a master of pop music and, as here, a driving force in the musical zeitgeist. This album marks one of a few moments that drove the mainstream of popular, commercial Western music toward a more heavily electronic sound. Between the beats and the vocal processing, it's hard not to imagine a Daft Punk influence throughout. It's also remarkable that Madonna dominated the charts with this album in her forties: something particularly difficult to do for a woman at that period of time, when female pop vocalists were typically in their early twenties. I've never been a fan of producer-dominated music. I'm interested in the contributions that producers make to albums but on the other hand, I'm left cold by most music that's built from the ground up by a producer tying to figure out what will sell -- and there's a strong current of that, here. That's true as much for pop as it is for Nirvana. To her credit, Madonna scrapped most of an album's worth of material that she'd produced with William Orbit for this record, so her input her is primary. But: as much as she deserves respect for her ability to understand the cultural moment deeply and to push it in a direction (and to drop 9 completed tracks because she doesn't want to repeat herself), the actual music sounds a little clinical. The Western theme has a real foreshadowing of Beyoncé's country turn. The electro-country vibe is still very cool. Madonna's vocals are excellent throughout (and in 2000, let me tell you that you could spot AutoTune from a rural mile away). Honestly, you really should check this out. It's eclectic and weird in the ways that culture from the turn of the millennium could often be. The convergence of disparate genres had begun at this point, but our ability to synthesize them into something organic was still underdeveloped and, though this is a polished version for the era, it still feels a little off-kilter. It's pleasant. The music still feels sterile and more for the benefit of shareholders than listeners but it's at least kinda weird. Standouts: 'Music' was a hit single and it's pretty good. The cover of 'American Pie' is alright; it kind of fucks up the tempo (too straight; thanks, pop music) but the use of a Rhodes piano is pretty great. "What It Feels Like For A Girl' is interesting and also packs a genuine emotional heft -- I'm shocked it hasn't had a resurgence. 'Don't Tell Me' and its chopped up acoustic guitar hook is cool, full stop -- best track on the record and would still be on a lot of good albums. 3.5/5; she's got better albums, but this isn't a bad listen.

""""music""""

I liked the more acoustic songs. I get that Madonna might have wanted to do something different. I wish she would have done something good.

A bit lame, I can't stand the pitch bend fad of the 2000s

It was madonna. Just a bit nothing but not too bad to turn off.

Wasn't expecting techno from Madonna tbh, but I think she does it pretty well! Think the album falls off in the second half, but there're a good number of songs I like in this

This is a music tech exam ahh album I feel like some of the glitchy and techy elements work quite well, like the vocal manipulations in the second song, but some are just trash, like the auto tune on 6, I am not really an auto tune hater, but there's nothing else in the beat so it just sticks out like a sore thumb. But there's obviously a huge budget gone into the production and sound design, even if it is just stealing popular sounds from the time, some bits are really Daft Punk and Euro-techno/house stuff. I feel like parts feel quite bit more arty than some of the poop party pop shit on the radios at the time, some of this (like the title song) is that though. Its quite fun though. ight be just me but it feels like she has nothing to say lyrically, as they are quite stale, which is why the cool effects make them better. Its quite fun though, nothing too offensive (besides maybe the title song). Favourite songs: Impressive instant, runaway lover, Don't tell me, what it feels to be a girl, paradise (not for me), American Pie (although I'm not super familiar with the original). Overall around 6/10

is it just me or is this a totally bizarre choice for a madonna album for this list? i read the wikipedia page and it seemed quite well-acclaimed at the time. is it possible this kind of music has been so refined and polished that this seems pedestrian to me? struggling between a 2 and a 3 but i ultimately didn't mind listening to it that much. i just didn't think anything interesting was happening during it!

Hard to think there was once a time when Autotune was groundbreaking. Not Madonna's best work, but I've always like "What It Feels Like For A Girl".

This album feels extremely dated. All of the sounds here have been so influential in the years after and have since been refined further. Especially the first half is a tough listen if you compare it to anything from the late 2010s. That being said I can appreciate the influence enough to give it its flowers.

старушка весело приуныла

Pop music isn’t my thing but this was a decent enough listen. I liked some songs, I hated a few, I was indifferent to the rest. Top Track - Don’t Tell Me

The influence on every single pop song from the 2000s should not be underestimated. To paraphrase another review, it sounds like the quintessential 2000s album because it influenced plenty of albums from the 2000s, despite this being the third decade of her career.

Sometimes maybe good sometimes maybe bad. It starts off a bit poor with the titular track, but it enters into an unapologetic 90s music vision of the 21st century. Its captured by focusing completely on "dance" & "partying." Maybe this improves over multiple listens, but I can barely understand Madonna's voice between the overproduced music. That may come across as a negative, but it actually gives it a very 90s feel.

I like this era of Madonna better than the mid 80s. She's more developed.

I can appreciate that in the time period where this came out, there was a lot of teen pop and R&B dominating the charts, and Madonna was going for something relevant but more refined. And I think she mostly succeeded, though it's not the sort of music I'm generally a huge fan of (and the cover of American Pie is a travesty).

Actually better than I thought it would be on balance. My younger self would be disappointed that I'm not cooler as a grown-up.

First half I was not sold, but honestly the back half is really great. What it Feels For a Girl was ahead of its time. Decent overall.

Would I (or anyone else) give this faux-confessional Europop knockoff mishegas the time of day of it weren't Madonna? Some of it is pretty nice, I admit, so it gets a 3.

80s and 90s Madonna was an absolute powerhouse. This iteration of her is very far from those heights though. A few good tracks, some that almost became the sound of the early 2000s, but nothing really had the staying power of her earlier work.

Pop mommy. The album came in with a bang and went out with a whimper. If the whole album were like the first 2 songs, it would’ve been 5 stars.

This was like her techno album and it wasn't too bad! It was definitely an album from the after her most popular ones but it was still a big deal for Madonna came out with a new album! Lol

What a strange album. Feels way past Madonna's prime but looking it up, this was nominatdd for a ton of awards. And I was worried, because the first couple songs were rough 90's/ 00's pop. And there was also some egregious autotune here. But this album actually got progressively better over it's runtime. In fact, the last three songs of What It Feels Like for a Girl, Paradise (Not for Me), and Gone were actually pretty good and I liked them a ton. Not enough to push this album past mid, but a respectable score nonetheless.

postives: + it was from madonna who is an icon + it had quite a few songs that are good for dancing too and relatable for a teen girl + gave vibes of an early 2000s charlie XCX with the synth and autotune used + good album length negatives: - i only knew 1 song - some songs were too long in length - the song paradise (not for me) and the weird female voice used creeped me out a bit my favouite songs: miss american pie which was the only one i knew but still loved and what it feels like for a girl

Enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Nice vocals with a Daft Punk vibe in the music. Better pop than other stuff that was coming out around the same time.

Solid album.

It was ok. I don’t care for Madonna’s dance club phase. 3 star.

definitely sounds french

*** 1/2 I like Madonna, but this one is not my favourite

Fine. I’m not a Madonna expert or anything, and she 100% has one or more albums that deserve to be on this list, but in my opinion this album ain’t one of them. The title track is pretty good, but the other songs didn’t grab me (an internet rando whose contributions to society overall are 1,000,000+ times less than Madonna’s).

This isn’t a bad album, but I wouldn’t call it essential listening. It feels very much of its time and hasn’t aged all that well. The only truly terrible thing here is that cover of American Pie...Yikes. Sometimes you just need someone around you that isn't afraid to say no to you. Save that abortion for a concert surprise cover. Overall a decent release, just nothing I'll ever put on intentionally again.

Very interesting production choices but not a bad album

there are a few bangers on here, everything else is good electro-pop, solid over all

Listened to this album a lot when it first came out, but don’t feel like it’s aged well. Only managed to listen to half - it annoyed me

The album art made me thought it'll be country, pleasantly surprised to listen to electronic music. Good stuff 3

I wanted to hate this just cause I thought the cover was lame. I don't though (at least completely). Even with some tackier sounds of the late 90's early 2000's and some pretty lame lyrics. Music, Runaway Lover and Amazing are pretty good. What it feels like for a girl is cool. Sometimes there is almost a portishead/bjork style production to some of these tracks which I'll give props to Madonna for trying out. Other tracks get annoying though.

Some good songs, some bad songs, a couple of hidden gems you wouldn’t think it’s Madonna, but that’s Her, ever changing ever redefining ever searching. Great album.

"Music" +1, late 90s pop music bonaza

• 3/5 • it’s fine, I suppose. Well crafted, polished production, but kinda boring . . .

fun enough, but a little flat for me personally. funk country and folk are claimed as influences and uh i don't know that Madonna's ever actually heard any of those genres

Autotuning and a bad version of American Pie detract from this album. Dated and somewhat stale.

Definitely a DIVA in women’s music. Great singer, music, entertainer. However, this album not good.

I don't recall this album. Madonna on the way down on the relevancy scale, but the dance stuff was OK.

Not exactly my jam. But as a man of a certain age, Madonna holds a semi important place in my development that I will always respect her for.

Glad there was variety to the songs, but there wasn’t anything here to write home about.

Well produced pop music and she's a good singer. Not my thing, though.

Completely forgettable, but the title track was pretty good.

The title track is one of those that I have heard all my life without knowing what it was or who it was by, an it and other tracks sound a lot clubbier than I was expecting. However, I'm not really sure what I was expecting. For all her fame, I don't think I could name more than one or two Madonna songs. Don't Tell Me is some typical but high-quality early 2000s pop. I kind of hate to admit it, but there's a lot of enjoyable tunes on this album and some interesting, unusual and even brave sounds and lyrics.

Favorite Track: Don't Tell Me

It was just okay. I can't really knock it, it was Madonna and definitely one of her stronger showings. Problem, for me, is that Madonna seems to get a great sound stuck in her head and not really know what to do with it, so she just loops it over and over. Being as this is a pretty electronica album, that repetition kind of turns into noise, though not really in a bad way. It's just that the album is the kind of music to play in a store - non offensive to the ears, but also incapable of distracting people from shopping - just background noise (though not quite elevator music).

A grand reinvention at the time holds up just enough to play in the new age.

lol, forgot ali g is in the 'music' video. Madonna seems to always surround herself with an amazing production team. This is not to take anything away from her as a musician; more to say it's a smart business mentality. .

Pretty good stuff - great stuff if you like being in a dance club.

Pretty Good but had higher expectations. She tries something new anyways and that's always appreciable

Maybe there's not a lot here that really stands out or that I could really see myself returning to, but none of it's bad, really, and I don't think I'd mind hearing any of this. Certainly a rather mature, refined album, without being completely sterile

Day465 - to have such a long career i know not every album is top to bottom good so i don’t judge this to harsh

This isn't the genre I usually listen to or enjoy so I'm not rating it too highly but it was a generally enjoyable experience throughout.

The 2000s were really a time. I'm feeling both nostalgic and annoyed from this lol. 2.9.

I don't understand this album. I guess it wasn't bad in any way, but there felt like there was nothing extraordinary about it. It sounded almost like parody of 2000s electro pop. Some of the lyrics were super cliche, but I still don't think it was bad. Weird list is weird. What It Feels Like for a Girl was surprisingly good too.

I got some gripes. First off, this album isn't bad. But do I think it belongs on here though? No. Confessions on a Dance Floor is better and has similar music. It's a better representation of Madonna during this time period. I'm not sure if COADF is on this list or not, but if it isn't, I will riot. The rating of the album is a 3, but I had to express my displeasure in the list; it can be fucking comical.

If electro-pop is your thing, I suppose you could do worse. I would readily admit that Madonna has an album or two worthy of this list. I just wouldn't have thought this latter day effort would be one of them. 2.5/5 (a generous rounded up 3 star rating for the app) Album 12/1001

After the great and mature artistic triumph that was Ray of Light, Madonna was probably disappointed that it wasn't also on par with her previous works commercially. So, Madge went right back into radio-ready songs with Music. But despite it's title track becoming her final Billboard #1, the rest of the songs are actually surprising left-field for a pop album. There's the jagged folktronica sound that Madonna would explore more on her next album, American Life, and there's also some Cher-esque autotuned vocals. The end result is, however, quite fractured and struggled to find its own identity. Even the cover artwork hints at a country-inspired album while it's definitely not one. Key tracks: Music Don't Tell Me What It Feels Like for a Girl

Madonna’s Music didn’t do a whole lot for me, but I’ll give it credit where it’s due—“Runaway Lover” was a legit highlight. Maybe I’ve got a soft spot for early 2000s EDM vibes after all. The rest of the album felt a bit dated, and not in a fun nostalgic way. More like a reminder of when auto-tune started taking over pop music and everyone thought it sounded futuristic. Not terrible, but not something I’d revisit often.

An okay inclusion on the list. 3/5

Mid tier Madonna

never been much of a fan, but i have immense respect for her and everything she has done. tons of talent and a trailblazer in her field. i must say most of these songs are catchy as hell… except when she tries the country thing. it just kind of falls flat.

Wasn’t bad but nowhere near her 80’s stuff.

I thought this would be better than it was, but it was still fine

First two songs start so promising with Madonna doing some fun things that sound fresh even today but then the rest of the album slips into more safe choices and less experimentation.

Ok Madonna- you are talented, but that is the only thing carrying this album. I admit though that it was a good palette cleanser in the moment.

Its fun and catchy but not mind blowing.

I’ve never been a big Madonna fan. I did enjoy this album though

It was decent not something id naturally put on but wouldn’t turn it off if it started to play

This was better than expected. Some bangers, and some kinda bad stuff. Feels like a 3.

Хитовая попса двухтысячных от престарелой шкуры

Wasn't a huge fan of this album (Music and American Pie are terrible), but tracks like Don't Tell Me save it for me. 2.5, rounded up.

A Madonna album, interesting. I'll check this out. I do know the first track. This is very EDM-y, so far. Pretty cool so far. 3-stars.

Some classics, but doesn't stand out to me.

It's a decent album, but not my taste typically. 3/5

68% Best: Runaway Lover; Paradise (Not for Me) Must-Hear? Nah

This isn't for me. There have been way worse albums on this list. But Madonna just is not my speed.

Looked at the track list before it started and recognized none of the songs ... turns out that "Hey Mr. DJ" song is actually the title track. Recognized a lot more of this music than I had thought, but none of it has ever really been what I want to hear. 2.5

When this album came out, you couldn't go to any gathering of a bunch of white people without hearing it. Parties, dances, wedding receptions. They were playing "Music" and "Don't Tell Me" for sure and probably some others sprinkled in. Maybe even "Believe" by Cher in there too since it was kind of the kickoff for this pop girlie autotune electronica phase. Might have popped in "Ray of Light" too, why not. The y2k vibes and the economy were strong. The receptions were open bar. We had all kinds of "healthy" granola bars that were covered in chocolate. Life was so good. This album aged ooookay.

I'm not a big Madonna fan so I had low expectations before I started listening and was pleasantly surprised. A mix of techno/electronica with a little country-adjacent type music that is not bad. Music and Don't Tell Me both stood out. I did not care for Nobody's Perfect with the maxed-out auto-tune and I'll just pretend I didn't hear the American Pie cover.

Madonna’s country album? Ok then. I only remember the single off of it. Let’s see where else the album goes. Well first off I stand corrected: not a country album at all. I don’t hate the late 90s-early 2000s electronica production at all, it’s actually kinda fun. 3 stars if you ignore the bonus track, which we don’t talk about.

as if the title track wasn't already the most y2k artefact imaginable, ali g appears in the video. a quarter century is a long time indeed.

Country with pop themes - Experimental instrumentals that work pretty decent - Nothing offensive but no standouts either

Rare madonna

Not as bad as I expected but it's still mostly dance pop. Probably two and a half stars.

I liked it. Somewhat unexpectedly. I especially enjoyed the ballads. Obviously Madonna is a mature artist at this point in her career with little to prove except that she can create compelling material that reflects an artist that still has something to say. 1/2 star deduction for American Pie which adds little to the original besides a modern production. 3 stars

Couple hits on here and it’s good to see Madonna still had it later in her career.

Some really interesting production here but the album I remembered this being is better than the album it is, it's completely lost it's way by the end.

Eigentlich nicht so meine Musik, aber das Album ist ganz gut.

surprisingly good

Interesting but a bit too electronic for me.

This album felt kind of monumental at first, but the more I thought about it, the less strongly I felt about that. I'll explain. While girl pop icons like Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera were carving out the new girl pop paths, Madonna was doing her own thing, refusing to become a follower rather than a leader in the pop space. This album is a reflection of that: electronic dance pop, quite different from the typical girl pop of the time. So that feels like a big deal. But upon further reflection, it seems like a little less of a big deal because she actually was ALREADY doing this, starting with 1998's "Ray of Light". "Ray of Light" feels infinitely more groundbreaking sonically than "Music" does. The music in "Ray of Light" seems to pack a more meaningful punch and feels less hollow than "Music". The title track, while ridiculously catchy and never skippable, still has a certain lackluster to it, though it is pretty much the album's best offering. Anyway, I baseline enjoyed this because I'm an absolute sucker for electronic pop, but yeah, it seems to lack heart. Hoping "Ray of Light" is on this project somewhere to set right things right. A pretty flat 3.

Not bad

Wow Music took me straight back to that era. I didn't know most of this album, but it encapsulates that period of music really well. 3* Highlights: music and don't tell me (because nostalgia)

Classics maar trager dan je denkt

не так бесит как в молодости (т. к. слишком перформатив), но конкретно это альбом слишком наавтотюненный, сильно не зацепил

Not bad, I've heard the hits from this album but never the whole thing. It's pretty good, the non hit songs are more of the same kind of pop music but it isn't tiring and has a catchy beat. Not sure I would go out of my way to listen to this again but it is not bad at all. If I happened upon it I wouldn't be upset.

The glitch-country-of “don’t tell me” is pretty good. And the warm wave of electronica of “what it feels like for a girl” is nice. “Gone” is another good one. Madonna herself doesn’t exactly shine on this album, but I kinda like the production.

The two big singles from this are good songs, but they also belie how fantastically weird the album around them is. The rest of what's here sound like Madonna was listening to a lot of Air, but also sort of presages hyperpop and the wider crossover of French House? Like Homework was already out, and "Around the World" had had a little impact, but this album came out two months before "One More Time". It's not a *great* album, but it is a fascinating one, and a great example of Madonna's ability to anticipate trends, even in the middle portion of her career.

Not really a fan but there is enough here for 3 stars or C as a rating.

bissi trash, bissi gut

i KNOW i can’t be the only one who has seriously been vibing to some music lately… i enjoyed listening to this!! it always feels a little weird to, like, sit down and listen to a dancey pop album like this; nevertheless i did like it. yeah it’s cheesy but it’s cute!!! yay!!!

that was cute and fun. it sounds a bit dated to me though. it had a lot of leftover stylings of her 90s music but with some of the sort of early 2000s techno flourishes on it which made it really sound like a time capsule of that era in a way that i think did not age super well. i think that's typical of pop and it doesn't make it bad music, it just doesn't sound fresh in the way that some of her (even older) music still does. fav tracks: Runaway Lover, Gone, Impressive Instant

No. 268/1001 Music 3/5 Impressive Instant 2/5 Runaway Lover 3/5 I Deserve It 3/5 Amazing 3/5 Nobody's Perfect 3/5 Don't Tell Me 3/5 What It Feels Like For A Girl 4/5 Paradise 2/5 Gone 4/5 American Pie 4/5 Average: 3,09 I get what she tried to do with this album. Just didn't click for me.

I'm, conflicted on this one. It would have been genuinely groundbreaking at the time, inspiring ultimately better artists (Goldfrapp), but it also popularised the shit trend of autotune

Rating: 7/10 Very good album overall. The production was definitely the standout, blending pop with electronic and country. Pretty experimental and sounds like this album had a large influence on other 2000s pop artists. Most of this aged pretty well (besides the horrendous autotune) and is mostly pretty catchy as well. Favorite songs: Music, I Deserve It, Don't Tell Me, What It Feels Like for a Girl, Paradise (Not for Me), Gone. Worst song: Nobody's Perfect.

It was just alright, not one of her better albums

A few good songs and a few unlistenable songs. Overall not for me

This album wouldn't exist without Cher's Believe. With that said, there are some truly fun songs on here if you don't take it too seriously. Afterall, "it's the millennium."

Honestly surprised by how much I enjoyed this. The production was minimal yet polished. The combination of acoustic guitar, house style beats, and pop vocals made for a fun listen. 3.5 / 5

Madonna has some legendary songs. None of the songs in this album are among them.

"I deserve" " Can't Tell you" Weltklasse.

Madonna's extraordinary collaboration with Scottish legend, Hamish the DJ. I've not listened to this album for over twenty years. I remember it being a surprising continuation of the redemption of Madonna after her slippage of the mid 90s. Music is actually a corking track - the bass is thumping and pumping and it leads nicely to Impressive Instant, which is a track that had completely exited my memory until it kicked off with an absolutely wicked four-on-the-floor beat that invigorates me in ways I might even be ashamed of it wasn't so damn good. Clearly Madonna had taken notice of Boris wosshischops' mixing for Moloko's Sing It Back because it's almost the same level of good. Runaway Lover suffers a bit for being too "out there" - it can't support the tempo it sets itself and feels five years too late, missing Prodigy and Kosheen doing this what it tries to, but nowhere near as well. The vocals sound disconnected and that's a shame. We then come onto a bit of a "Can you try and make me sound a bit like Dido?" sort of track in I deserve it, and I'm tempted to skip. In fact, at over four minutes it IS a skip, because it does everything it needs to within about 50 seconds. Amazing, put onto this album in the year 2000, has incredible resonance in late 2024 with "Hagmaxxing" being the word du jour. Madonna was doing it back in the day, Gen Z. Nobody's Perfect is an abomination of vocoding and it gets a skip straight into the "Madonna being a bastard hybrid of Green Day and Cheryl Crow" that is Don't Tell Me, and that almost gets a skip too. It doesn't, but only because I quite like that start/stop thing it does. It's also (weirdly) the most "Madonna-voice" track in the whole recording. And I quite like that. She has actually got a good voice, and it's nice to hear it almost unfettered here. The whole rest of this album can do one, though. Do I know what it feels like for a girl? No, surprisingly. As other commentors here have said, that cover version of American Pie is a pickled turd. Rating this album for the first 2 tracks, it'd get a comfortable 5. It doesn't hold its energy well enough to be more than a 3.

Really not that memorable to me

Strange, poppy music

Reasonable range of styles

Fun and enjoyable, pop done right

When one thinks of Madonna albums, one easily thinks of any of her first five; Madonna; Like a Virgin; True Blue; Like a Prayer; and Erotica. those albums are trailblazers and ones that are truly mandatory listens. Music and its one hit that felt like Madonna was reinventing herself… again are okay but not an example of a good portion of her output. 3/5

Listened to this with my husband, on our way up north for a little weekend vacation. I mostly liked it but it did sound pretty dated. I forgot all about the other non-“Music” singles on this.

Better than expected. Some great production flourishes and more interesting subject matters. Sadly it also contains one of the most dogshit cover versions in human history, of American Pie. Impressive as I couldn't think of a way to make that mawkish turd worse myself!

I remember this being the album where Madonna completely lost me. It just felt like she was trying to keep up with where popular music was going, but it didn't feel like there was much if any of her in the music. Actually sitting down to listen to the album didn't really change my opinion about that. It's fine, but I also can't justify this album making this list. Ray of Light I could understand, but this album feels far too pedestrian to be one of the 1001 albums I should listen to before my execution 3/5

It’s true, music does make the people come together. And I guess sometimes it unites the bourgeois and the rebels. But more often it just lets the bourgeois cosplay as rebels. Just because some rich kids go out to the club and dance with the riff raff to the music of one of the wealthiest artists of all time doesn’t mean they’re gonna wake up from their hangover the next day and try to change the world. It’s all performative and temporary.

Hate American pie and the title track, but the rest of it is okay.

Much like her face these days, too much filler

Previously rated: Ray Of Light (3/5) *********************** After the first half, I was leaning towards a 4/5. Really solid dance music with some throwback 80s effects. Then the awful auto-tune in Nobody's Perfect and the annoying sound cutting out on the next track Don't Tell Me, I have to take a point off. I'd still rather listen to any of her first four albums.

Not heard any of this before. It surprised me how different it was to what I'm used to from her. Despite being intriguing the experimental sounds don't pay off on every track. I do like how each track sounds so distinct to the previous one. There were some decent tracks but I think I'd need to listen again to fully get the album. Highlights: Impressive Instant Runaway Lover

Madonna 3/3 (after LaP and RoL) HL: “Amazing”, “What It Feels Like For a Girl”, title track Can’t love it, can’t hate it. Exists in a blind spot I have in late 90’s/early aughts pop. Orbit’s work on the track “Amazing” makes me think I underrated his work on Ray of Light. It does anticipate 2000s dance-pop trends as some critics have suggested, but to me they’re all the ones that make me look back and think “what a tacky era of music” But to illustrate my biases, I put on Robyn’s Body Talk (2010) on for the first time the other day, and I don’t think that aged the best either. Would definitely choose that over Madonna’s eighth album on a list of this caliber, though

Pretty catchy

Nunca he sido el más fan de Madonna. No está mal, pero seguro tiene varios mejores. De esos que no entiendo bien que hacen en la lista.

Mixed reaction to this one. I wasn’t looking forward to it when it popped up. However the first bunch of songs I thought were quite good. Unfortunately by the time I hit Nobody’s Perfect the electronically manipulated voice had worn me down and it lost me from that point forward.

The American Pie cover sucks, but there’s some great songs.

Experimental weird album. The production is crazy. Sounds like they listened to daft punks homework and a bunch of 90s techno. The sings is strange. Madonna is strange. I was interested by this album and could see it being influential but I don’t think it would be accurate to say I liked this album. Bizarre stuff

Forgettable

As much as I dislike electronica, pop and dance music, I have to say this album is very good. Madonna reinventing herself after years of domination and fussioning a ton of different generes to make this experimental album which turned out to be better than ever expected. Dont love any specific song but after listening to it in order without interruptions I can say its a top Madonna album and probably top of that genere. This rates high because of the context of Madonna having to bring something new and different to the table and she brought it. The slow songs kill the vibe mood for me but still those are decent songs.

Not her best, but she reinvents herself each album. The autotune song had to go, though.

7/24/24. Admittedly, this is my first time giving Madonna a true shot. I have to say I liked this one, went in without expectations. Pretty clean and enjoyable pop record, just can't decide if this should be a 3 or a 4. My true rating is a 3.5.

Hope there is more Madonna on the list if this is essential. Some bangers though

Favorites Amazing Nobody’s perfect What it feels be like for a girl

"I deserve it" and "amazing" were the best tracks for me, the rest was a bit bland/boring, wasn't what I was expecting from madonna.

Much less worse than anticipated. Holy shit is that American Pie cover the absolute worst thing I've heard in a long time.

A slightly hunched, crabbit Madonna stares us down from the album cover. There is something uncanny about her visage, which is just as well; for half this album she sounds like a glitching android. The other half, well, it's Madonna - she sings with the same expression as most hostages give in proof-of-life videos. That's not to say that there isn't any interest in 'Music'. In fact, as a studio confection there's plenty to enjoy, Madonna and her producers throwing the entire box of tricks at almost every tune going. Just as well, because beneath the bells and whistles are some rather cookie cutter melodies and uninspired song craft. However, I'm almost missing the point here - 'Music' very much is a collection of gaudy sounds and aural gewgaws - it's tinsel all the way down, boys.

I’ve always discounted this album as auto-tune early-2000s bad dance music. After listening to it properly I still don’t like this Madonna like I do 80s Madonna, but it kind of works together and she hadn’t changed as much as I thought. It’s weird they auto-tune her sometimes when she can clearly sing. Probably needs another listen, sadly I don’t have time. I have discovered it has a French producer so another example of French EDM seeming to be not my thing. Fave Track: I Deserve It Rating: 3

3/5. These are some solid electronic pop songs. I do hear the genre bending, and I think it works for a lot of the faster songs but when it slows down, it's hard to really follow and enjoy for some of them. There is even some influence from Alt Rock, R&B, country that I can hear. It's unique and enjoyable but I don't think it's perfect. It might go up in rating on more listens, which I do want to do, but don't think I super enjoyed it save for some songs. Best Song: Music, What It Feels Like For A Girl, Paradise (Not For Me)

Avaus on helpon tuntuinen mutta pirun tehokas: yksi kuuntelu ei riitä. Jos viehättyisin enemmän aikakauden elektronisesta tarkkuudesta, kuuntelisin loputkin uudelleen. Toimiva LP.

it’s a mess but a decent one

Don’t have to much to day about this one! A fine listen

Coolt men lite långtråkigt

First Madonna album I've listened to. It was fine.

Pop music. Over produced. Some people love it. This is the first time I’ve ever purposefully listened to Madonna. It sounded exactly how I thought it would.

This wasn't bad.

The second album in Madonna's maturity phase. We've got some millennium pop optimism going on but it has actually aged better than some of the other albums from this era. A few solid songs make this a good collection.

There are a few duds on this. It's mostly really good though.

This album made quite a comeback for me... It started out pretty bad but really enjoyed the mid to back end of the record. I still prefer the earlier Madonna album, Like a Prayer, but pleasantly surprised.

This is not a preferred genre in my rotation, but I do recognize the cultural significance of the artist, and have much respect for the way she has been able to reinvent herself and evolve continuously to maintain relevance for 40 years. All that said, this album pales in comparison to everything she did leading up to this release. The two singles merit and I can see where they achieved mainstream success. There rest is average at best IMO. 2.5/5

I thought I was gonna be like a virgin when listening to this one since I really don’t know much of her songs outside of the hits. But then around track six I heard that stupid Cher-inspired autotune vocal modulation effect and I realized I wasn’t being touched for the very first time. I liked the acoustic meets electronic element on some tracks, but outside of the two known singles it all just started to sound the same.

The fact that THIS Madonna album is on the list makes me think we have another 2-3 Madonna albums to go... she has never been my favorite and not sure why it was selected to represent her catalog. I did enjoy Music and Don't Tell Me, but the rest is kinda meh (especially when she leans heavily on Autotune). 2.5/5

First track is gorgeous

Perfectly good.

Not her best album. The 80's techno vibe was really weak. Didn't age well

some decent, some poorer I liked the instrumental parts more than her singing

This sounds like a mix of electropop and general acoustic pop. I don't really know why it's on the list since it isn't one of Madonna's essential albums, as far as I understand. "Paradise (Not For Me)" is a great track, though.

Liked this a lot. Talented lady singing about her boyfriends and break ups a bit like Ray of Light but not quite as good

Ágætt stöff. Alls ekki hennar besta.
