Reviews (page 4 of 7)

Some hits I remember and still enjoy. Pseudo-experimental sound but also feels dated and sonically trendy for 2000. Some beautiful poetry mixed in between some cheesy lyrics.

album wasn’t bad, i’d just say it was decent, the title track was good, and there was an empowering feel in the music, overall the music didn’t blow me away but i respect madonna for her influence

Super poppy, not a huge fan of Madonna but a couple of these tracks aged well imo (better than others) 2.7

Kinda surprised that Music was picked, this really feels like M was chasing the trends instead of forming them. Additionally, William Orbit’s production doesn’t really hold up. But, this is the first Madonna era I really remember- I knew who she was and some of her older songs, but I vividly recall hearing and seeing the videos for the title track and “Don’t Tell Me” often. So there’s definitely nostalgic attachment to it, even if this isn’t her best. C

Wasn't expecting to see Madge pop up again. I suppose this album is evocative of very specific moment in pop culture when she was still relevant and not yet completely cringeworthy. (I say this as someone who went through a HUGE Madonna phase, and did in fact see her on tour in 2004). She did do a bit of a country western aesthetic revival that influenced early aughts fashion. Music and Don't Tell Me were both hits with memorable music videos that got lots of rotation on MuchMusic and/or MTV. It's what I expected though, the hits are hits and they still slap but the rest of this album is boring filler. There isn't anything edgy or exciting here. It's basic pop drivel. I do still love the classic or canon Madonna eras (1983-2005) and respect what she's done as an artist. But everything she's done after Confessions on a Dance Floor has been embarrassing to witness. I don't want to be ageist, BUT, I do wish she'd chosen to age a bit more gracefully like Cher has and act in a way befitting an icon; a way that doesn't diminish her legacy the way all the "edgy" lingerie, grills, and face filler are doing now.

Quite a bit of musical genres in this one. Another end of college days for me. Know the album well.

Good enough to just have playing in the background and ignore.

Wow the opening track took me right back to that time. I like this because it’s basically an electronic album featuring Madonna. Producers deserve title credits!

Following her electro-pop success of Ray of Light, we see similar creativity and excellent electronic production on this record. This one is brighter, faster, and louder. It's also more traditional of a pop album than Ray of Light, which I think serves as a weakness. It's more predictable and it seems like the music is disjoint from Madonna's singing. She also shows less personality and emotion in these songs. The first 3 tracks are a strong start and gives you an idea what this album should have been. Instead, it takes a turn from there with 3 lame tracks: a lifeless ballad, a generic dance tune, and a Cher-level autotune disaster that drags on for 5 minutes of the same line over and over. "Don't Tell Me" is the only song that fits the "cowgirl" design she was going for, with a pleasant blend of electronic, pop, and country that doesn't go too crazy. The following track is some dreamy downtempo, a bit boring and repetitive but also pleasant. "Paradise" is the most creative song and could definitely fit on Ray of Light. And finally, "Gone" is an underwhelming but fitting closer. In comparison to Ray of Light, I do feel it's less consistent and less innovative. The highs don't reach the same, and the lows are just awful. But you do still have top-of-the-notch production skill, and there is quite a bit of surprising innovation throughout.

Seems only tangentially related to Madonna. Could have been anyone singing these tracks. I think I had heard 2 of the songs on here before. It was inoffensive and forgettable but okay for what it is.

I never really liked her music...

bis auf Music und American Pie solala

Surprisingly unremarkable for Madonna

This was quite fun despite some very odd production in places. The songwriting wasn’t quite as strong as the previous Madonna albums on this list (Like a Prayer and Ray of Light), and I’m surprised this made it on over something like True Blue. It was a good time though, even if a bit inconsistent

nowhere near as good as Like a Prayer. don’t love the more “modern” vibe she went for here. not bad though just not good

very 2000 sounding production, sometimes veers into S-Club but a couple of solid smashes in there

3 --- Excelente calidad de grabación y producción. Salvo por los éxitos, los demás tracks son de relleno

What it feels like for a girl er best, Don't tell me er fínt og American Pie hefur sinn sjarma þrátt fyrir ég fíli originalinn betur. Hitt er ágætur filler.

DO NOT BE FOOLED: THIS IS NOT MADONNA'S COUNTRY ALBUM. IN FACT SHE HAS NEVER DONE A COUNTRY ALBUM. Madonna's entry into the 2000's after Ray of Light was bold and brash (more like belongs in the trash!) When pop stars such as Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and Jessica Simpson were modeling their careers after her, Madonna was choosing to innovate and experiment with her own music. The result is a mix of house, folk, downtempo, and other diverse sound influencing her approach to electropop. The result is a mixed bag where some songs definitely work better than others. I commend Madonna for being so willing to evolve and attempting to synthesize new elements. It's just that some parts of the album come across as painfully dated, and the American Pie cover should've been dropped.

Blandly fine? Finely bland? The American Pie cover is a shocker.

Some catchy songs but ultimately a pretty unsophisticated venture into electronic pop.

Pretty good

No way near as good as her other album from the era that is on this list. Bit too bland.

Out of all her albums this one made the list? "I like to singy singy singy like a bird on a wingy wingy wingy"

Not her best. Ok

This album was a pretty good pop album. A few of the songs were superhits from back in the day. All around it seemed to be pretty experimental with it's glitchy sounds and futuristic uses of electronics. It didn't succeed all the time, but was pretty good nonetheless. 3.3/5 -> 3/5.

This is the album Madonna reinvented her image as a cowgirl... and then theres people who still give it low star..

Not the best pick of Madonna albums. Why this is on the list and the earlier work not (f.e. Like a Virgin), beats me.

I generally like Madonna, and have a soft spot for her earlier stuff. This didn't do much for me.

la reprise qui cloture l’album c’est pour m’achever

Alright pop

Madonna blends country and pop well on some of the tracks. Others are standard Madonna pop.

After three opening cuts – which are silly and synthetic, completely disposable club music – there is much to like here. Her voice is/was still in good shape at this point but one woulda like more room for the beats/beds to live and breathe. Perhaps the production was a big deal. The stop-start effect on "Don't Tell Me" is silly. This song also sounds like she's channeling Sublime -- how the mighty have fallen. And poor Joe Henry; his version of this cut -- his own -- is about 1,000 times cooler, though hopefully the royalties from his sister-in-law have cheered him up. The more organic the songs – that is the least plastic and clubby – the better (see "I Deserve It, ' "Gone"). One assumes "Nobody's Perfect" was a relatively early adoption of Autotune (again, who cares?) which doesn't sound any better today and the weird effects (a theremin with sinus congestion?). Best moment of the whole record is the vibe/bed toward the beginning of "What It Feels" but rest of song doesn't remotely do it justice (so maybe h/t to producer on that one). Overall, it's hard to resist the conclusion that this is a trend-chasing exercise by a celebrity desperate to stay relevant. But at least's polished, well-made and often pleasurable.

A more mellow Madonna.

Ik was hiervan aan t genieten. Vond het veel nicer dan ik dacht dat ik het zou vinden, het klonk goed, heel nice geproduceerd etc. Toen kwam american pie

don't think I'll revisit but really not as bad as I expected after really hating "Ray of Light"

It's not her best, and in some ways a bit indulgent. Her French is worse than mine. We didn't need to spend three minutes on Paradise (which should be paradis).

The first few tracks and interesting with a curious electronic vibe, but I like the later tracks that a little bit more mellow and moody. It definitely feels like a mature pop record, though there is nothing catchy enough to warrant repeat listens.

The Queen of Pop shows she’s quite comfortable on the throne, even if her status was starting to slip by the turn of the millennium. The lyrics are a bit clunky, but the beats remain danceable and her confidence shines through. (Side note: Don’t Tell Me was cowritten by Madonna’s brother-in-law Joe Henry, who has a highly underrated music career of his own—including his own take on Don’t Tell Me on his 2001 album Scar, though there it’s called Stop. Extremely recommended!)

Not bad. I can appreciate that she evolved her sound but I guess I like her earlier albums better.

Most of my opinions of Madonna stem from my early exposure to her role in "A League of Their Own" This album, while not my favorite, earns a solid three

Baby making music. But where are the hits, Madge?

somes songs sounded really awkward but others weren't half bad. truly the second half is better than the first. Felt like a fake dance album.

Not for me, but it's clearly well produced and designed to get you moving. 3 The wikipedia article for this album is *sprawling*. This lady has some fans.

эй мистер диджей.. бля, это так старо оказывается... кавер на american pie такой себе, но отчасти понимаю в рамках контекста альбома алкоальбом: маргарита в клубе ночном (3+)

Second half of the album improves a lot. Was not expecting this from Madonna

Had a few good laughs listening to this. It's late-era Madonna, the older pop star trying to keep up with the youngin's. In the era of Britney Spears and whoever else, Madonna puts out this. The production ranges from really cool and interesting to just silly, and that's sort of the album as a whole. I skipped a few songs on here, which is never a good sign, but I also found myself enjoying even more. And "Don't Tell Me" is one I've certainly heard before. I can't really give this more than three stars in good faith because it's goofy and has skips, but I'm not as mad at the inclusion that I worried I would be. Thankfully it's not the only Madonna on the list. Favorite tracks: Music (funny), I Deserve It, Don't Tell Me, Paradise (Not For Me), Gone. Album art: The cherry on top, and what had me worried most of all. The album is called "Music," which is dumb enough on its own, but it's a picture of rancher Madonna? This isn't even a country album, I can only remember one song that arguably veers into country-ish instrumentals, why's she doing all this? I hope she was having a laugh here because I certainly am. 3/5

Much better than I expected it to be, but not amazing either. I definitely underestimated Madonna. 7/10 Top 3: 1. Paradise (Not for Me) 2. Gone 3. Impressive Instant

Ordinary Madonna Pop. Nice, but with sone exceptions boring

What is this album doing in this list?! "Madonna" and "Like A Virgin" are 5 star. "True Blue" is 4.5 and "Like a Prayer" is 4 star. "Frozen" is 4 star, just like "Confessions on a Dance Floor". All other Madonna albums are 3 star at most. Out of these remaining albums, Music is one of the best. It is perhaps a bit more consistent than Frozen, but Frozen contains four absolute 5-star singles, and Music contains none: a couple 4 star, a couple 2 star, rest is 3 star. my vote in 2000: 6/10 my vote in 2024: 6/10

Not a bad album, but why pick this one for the 1001 list?

Oof - first play through I was leaning towards a 2, but maybe I was just in a mood that day - the second play through it isn't striking me as being quite as objectionable. It definitely feels like Madonna is trying to play catch up with Björk or something, right? A couple of the tracks feel like sub standard Daft Punk or Air knock offs. Fave tracks - "Gone" maybe? "Don't Tell Me" is the least objectionable of the singles...

not bad

It would be actually good without the auto tunes

The early 2000s auto tune trend was rough

3 songs at 4/5 stars, the rest 1/2... I dunno about the maths on that, but it's another mixed bag Madonna album that's for sure.

decent album, seemed samey for the genre.

J'aime bien Madonna, mais pas mes chansons préférées ! Mes préférées: Music et Paradise (Not for me) j'ai bien aimé sa voix et le rythme pour celles ci

Definitely good! I liked the first song "music" and all the instrumentals on the other songs. Good voice and lyrics 3.7

A quick listen. While Madonna is a talented artist, I don't particularly care for her style of music.

2000, vuosien vuosi.. milleniumin vaihtovuosi ... uudet teknologiat autotunet sun muut löydetty.. käyteätään tässä täydessä vauhdissa.. varmaan luuli että joku futuurinen saundi heh... JA OIKEASSA OLI.. MAHTAVAA ROBO TEKNOLOGIA LAULAU... hulluja pliippejä ja plööppejä, tieto kone polkkaa.. mutta mikäs tuo american pie coveri, ei hitannut tällä kertaa paradise (not for me)

Pop. Folk

Madonna has been making danceable hits for 40 years. “Music” and “Don’t Tell Me” took me straight back to middle school—Probably haven’t heard those songs for 20 years. Loved the club/house tracks on this album but everything else wasn’t too compelling. Three stars.

Mehdonna effort to stay rlevant.

Full of bops but nosedives at the end into a very unnecessary cover of American Pie.

First cut is great. Some other catchy tunes including a nice cover of American Pie.

Not as groundbreaking as other might say just because they remember few songs from MTV.

Wouldn't really listen to this much

Cringe at times, visionary at others. The deep exploration of the early 2000s pop textures makes this read more like hyperpop than pop.

Ah the autotune era. Has this always been Madonna's thing? Interesting to hear more and feel/experience Madonna's branding of herself as an innocent, sexy girl. 'Music' is a great song, the rest of the album wasn't much for me.

Never listened to entire album. Enjoyed it. But it's MADONNA . . . . .

Niet direct mijn meug, maar ik kan het wel nog appreciëren

The first song is not bad, but the rest of the songs are not necessarily better.

# 119 : Kind of ok well rounded album. There's definitely some filler though. A bit lame for a "Super star", but I liked it more then I thought I would. Fun to listen to, but nothing mind blowing. Favourite Track : Amazing Listened : 28/11/2023

Some great moments in there

Good album, Madonna’s foray into pop electronica is an enjoyable listen. 3/5 mainly only because as much as I enjoyed it, I won’t listen to it regularly.

Better-than-respectable, and the experimentation toes a brave line, Don't Tell Me sublimating the genuinely annoying. However, the album's a seriously mixed bag, and the concept never quite comes together but always slightly binds.

Couple of bangers but not enough

Not actually that bad, some funk/soul influences in there.

Inoffensive

It had it's moments. Kinda felt like the start of a bit of "listen to me, I'm still cool. I can hang with the new girls on the scene" kinda vibe. The "futuristic" pop sounds didn't age too well. And why is she wearing a cowboy hat?

Madonna is tight. Crazy looking these days, but such a good artist. Weird, poppy (for its time) and good energy. Reminds me of a country Britney spears album

This album is kind of like the opposite of Transformer for me. I think Madonna is a pretty good singer. Don't get me wrong, I think Lou Reed's singing could grow on me with future listens to other Lou Reed albums as well as the Velvet Underground albums, but I wasn't a big fan of his singing. What I'm trying to say is that while I think the singing was the worst part of Transformer, I think the best part of Madonna's "Music" is her singing. Nothing else really stuck out to me that much. I didn't like the sound on a lot of the songs. I just don't think that the contrast between the techno sound and the almost folk-like sound work well together. Some of the songs dragged on for me. Did "Paradise (Not for Me)" really need to be 6 minutes? Some of the songs were good though. I think the closer, Gone, is the best song in the album. The editing just isn't my thing a lot of the time. Overall, I can see why others might like it a bit and I understand why this album is on here, but this just isn't my thing at all. low 3/5.

It was ok but nothing grabbed my attention

Some hits and misses

Queen of Pop I prefer some of her other albums over this one though

I should have been less surprised that the 5th highest selling artist of all time has decent music. Too poppy for my tastes, but did a lot with it. Interesting.

I'm scared of Madonna

Madonna is catchy as always. Most of it is a bit too cheesy for my taste, but it’s still really good! My favorite of the album is Nobody’s Perfect - it sounds like a modern day down tempo electronic banger! Includes legendary song American Pie as the outro.

Next album please

I was prepared for this to be an utter trainwreck. But it wasn't, some of it was quite, ahem, 'musical.' However the less said about the horror of the American Pie cover, the better.

This proves why Madonna ruled all pop music

Klassiker

la quiero mucho pero no me pinta tanto este género ah 7.5/10

Totally remember the time this electro producer Madonna record dropped, a certain feeling of postmodern genre clashing made everything feel cocainy euphorical before 9/11 hangover awakeing. Also humour wenn from Ali G then to Achmed „l’ll kill you“ the dead terrorist. Rrrreprezent!

American Pie ruined it for me :/

This was good but not great, some good songs but not the absolute consistency of a great pop album.

Hmm. On a re-listen this feels like a bit of a curate's egg, betrayed by three different producers. Three stellar tracks in Music, What It Feels Like and closer Gone. But bits of it feel like out-takes from Ray of Light, bits of it feel like a not quite fully achieved French filter house album, and bits of it are a bit duff. Then of course one of the worst covers of all time. So can't give it more than three stars.

no false advertising here: it's definitely music by madonna

This was pretty good. Some familiar tracks, really liked the cover of American Pie.

Not her best, but pretty good. 3 stars.

Not her best but I did love this when it was realised

There is a fitting pop superstar arrogance to just naming a release "Music". Madonna signing about what music does to the "bourgeoisie" is the icing on the cake. Obviously with the sort of team behind something like this, there are catchy pop earworms aplenty. I think this list has leaned too heavily into this artist's later catalog; its all pretty forgettable.

This is my least favorite Madonna album, but I do love Impressive Instant. The rest sounds dated & bland compared to her other work. It's honestly disappointing to see this one & not Confessions on a Dance Floor - that one has an ABBA sample for christ's sake! I will always love/hate Madonna, and she'll always be The Queen of Pop, but this album is a general dud.

Best lekker eens een keer zo’n album te luisteren

Good but also has some weak moments. What It Feels Like For A Girl is my favourite.

This album incorporates disco, trance, electro-pop, and country/folk elements. Though the use of these elements is not new, the fact that they’re all present in a pop album by a blockbuster artist is really fascinating. The album does sound really dated due to the effects it uses and its production style, but I did really enjoy it as it gave me a new perspective of an artist who is known for her earlier groundbreaking pop work. Madonna is clearly interested in musical growth and even if it doesn’t always land, I appreciate her trying to expand her horizons.

Pretty good, but honestly nothing really brings me back to it.

Better than expected but still felt a little forgettable

I vaguely recall when this album came out, and it was being heralded as a marked turn in Madonna's career. Listening some 22 years later, it doesn't really have much sense of being groundbreaking, indeed some of the content seems quite dated (see 'Feels Like For A Girl'). Still, there are a few decent tracks, including the titular 'Music' which I recall featured none other than Ali G in the accompanying video

This was fine and I liked it but Madonna is the pop dance goddess and this wasn’t her.

This is not in the latest issues of the book anymore. Probably because it's not different enough from Ray of Light. It's not the worst album on the list by far, so that can't be the reason. It's alright. Not a record I would pick myself. Favorite song: What it feels like for a girl

Good follow up to Ray of Light with some harder house and some indie songs. Awful version of American Pie with unnecessary nursery music.

Back in the day my co-judge and I danced to the title track at Club Med, where it was on high rotation. Madonna made a smart move two years earlier, by teaming up with William Orbit for a fresh club sound and here she adds another producer to the mix with good results, though outside of "Music" the up-tempo tracks aren't as strong. Not often you'll find a multi platinum pop album with such adventurous (for its time) production. As far as transformations go, Madonna's not in the same school as David Bowie or Miles Davis but she's up there. In this version I find the Cowboy image is a bit confusing, considering the overall sound.

I didn’t mind this. A couple of good tracks and a reasonable listen. I’m not familiar with all her albums but I quite liked this point in her career. 3*

Some enjoyable moments and crystal clear production certainly keeps Madonna relevant but Music struggles to match up to the title track and is, overall, a little stodgy.

Heb nog nooit goed naar Madonna geluisterd maar ik vond het wel interessant. Er zitten een aantal spacende nummers tussen. Ik vond het niet bijzonder goed maar wel verrassend

definitely of its time

A real mixed bag with high highs and low lows. Has aged suprisingly well for the most part, considering that its 25 years old at the time of these lines. In all the lows (nobody's perfect) drag the thing too much down for 4 stars that the highs (Don't tell me; What it feels like for a girl) would deserve.

61 of 1001 Madonna - Music Favorite Track : Music Rating : 3 / 5 (Rounded Up) It wasn't as bad as I expected. A bit toned down for Madonna. Some songs seemed more suited for a 20 year old, but who am I to judge?

3/.55 A few great songs.

Year 2000 pop, nice to listen to but nothing mind blowing

I often gripe about production. This has 5* production...total credit to that dude. Tbh its a very listenable album. Some of the lyrics are a bit hokey and there are track (nobody's perfect) with a auto tune thing that i skipped. And American Pie was an execrable cover. Almost a 4.

Some brilliant dance production on this. It's not quite ray of light for me, but it's a very good album

I mean yeah it was music

Ah it's fairly shite tbh. Music is a banger, what it feels like... is okay, there is a.l.o.t. of filler, and that American Pie cover is an abomination.

Thought I’d hate this but it wasn’t bad. Obviously the American Pie cover is terrible. But I don’t really like the original that much anyway.

A good pop album. There's definitely some filler though. But I like that a lot of songs have the eccentric feel of experimental electronica (especially the early tracks). The production gets a little adventurous.

Listened a while ago don't remember it

So, Madonna got together with William orbit and a few other late 90s producers and made an album where she's a cowgirl singing over house beats. OK. I mean, there's part of this I like in theory, but I just don't think Madonna can pretend to be the source of electronic underground, especially in a Stetson.

way more musically unique than I thought it owuld be. cool time signature stuff

I’ve always been a little confused how Madonna became the icon that she is today. This album did not clear up any confusion, but I’m looking forward to hearing her earlier work

I like some Madonna songs, but definitely not these ones. Feels both of the 00's and dated, but it is 2026...

Why do electronic music artists always want to sound like a robot?

There were some nice moments on this album. I particularly liked "Don't tell Me" and "Paradise (Not for Me)" The rest of the album felt kind of awkward and unsure of what it was trying to be or do and I absolutely hated her cover of American Pie.

Me di cuenta q no sé nada de madonna, no sabía que esperar, pero no entiendo porq está este disco. Senti q estaba escuchando temas que quizá les gustarían a un super fan de madonna, a mí no.

Another day another 2000s album on this list from an artist past their prime because the authors didn’t know who was actually making good music in that decade It’s not the worst music I’ve ever heard, Madonna’s clearly a talented vocalist and I appreciate the effort to make something new. Runaway Lover is probably the best song on the album for me, very catchy and fundamentally a solid pop song The rest of this album just isn’t very good unfortunately. The majority of the songs on here kinda suck, Nobody’s Perfect in particular is just a bad song. I think the biggest thing that upsets me about this album is how non-genuine it feels. It really feels like she crammed this album full of industry trends and crowd pleasers (what the hell is American Pie doing on this album man…), and it just really doesn’t feel like Madonna I don’t think every individual moment is bad (like honestly the quality of the music itself is right around a 3), but this albums just kinda a mess for me. High 2 since it doesn’t deeply offend me, but this absolutely shouldn’t be on this list

and the worlds worst cover award goes to madonna!!!!

There are some interesting concepts and risks taken on this album. The second and third tracks feature well crafted electric beats. However, the rest of the album tries to do far too much at once and, more often than not, falls flat on its face. Autotune is frequently overused, and the blend of country and electric is questionable. The cover of "American Pie" is inexcusable. I admire the risks taken here and am sure it influenced others, but at the same time, the album didn't break any new ground and has aged very poorly.

Ok 2000 pop-electronic album from the icon Madonna. Some interesting production choices here, and they do well to fit the electronic sound well into different types of songs from dance-pop to more serious, slower songs. But ultimately, a forgettable album for me that doesn’t really stand above the pack.

While it was not technically bad, I spent the whole album just wanting to move on to something else.

Some ok beats and "What It Feels Like..." is great but this is mostly overproduced forgettable electropop with bad vocals all the way through. And the worst cover I've ever heard in my life to end it. Ugh.

2.5 Meh.

I really love Madonna but not nearly as much as the writers of this list do, apparently. She always has great hits but the album tracks are just... there. The "American Pie" cover is an abomination, which makes this the lowest rated Madge album so far.

1.7 2x american pie cover was atrocious

Some songs were ok but holy shit this "American Pie" is TERRIBLE.

Boy, “grown-up” Madonna sure does suck, doesn’t she? This album, made from the mistaken notion that she needed to “compete“ with teenybopper icons Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera, just shows that you don’t have to be an anonymous Brit to make irritating dance/electronica music. Good points: this is slightly less irritating than its genre competitors, and she does limit herself to 44 minutes, for which I am eternally grateful. Bad points: the whispered and treated vocals that crop up intermittently are extremely irritating, and for an artist I know to be intelligent, these have to be some of the dumbest lyrics ever committed to paper. I thought long and hard about giving this three stars, but realized I would be holding my nose with a death grip in order to avoid the stench from doing so. Two stars, baby.

hrrm, maybe later

It really isn't her best. Some good tracks but that cover of American Pie is so bad.

I'm guessing this was experimental and "revolutionary" at the time. Doesn't make it good though.

I think I prefer earlier Madonna.

It’s incredibly dumb to have this album and Ray of Light on the list. Pick one you lazy editor!

Most of it was quite boring, there were a couple songs that were not bad, American pie definitely much better by Don McLean. I expected much more from Madonna.

2000-luvun poppi on niin outoa.

This is awful. The Queen of pop my arse if this what she thinks is acceptable. Generic, autotuned shoite. Some small highlights saves it from a 1

this was fine, some good moments but the american pie cover was criminal

Not good Madonna.

Madona from the 2000’s sounds like she’s trying to conform to the period. Awful. She needed to stay in her lane. She’s still the Queen of Pop, but historians won’t look back kindly with this effort.

I do not miss the glitchy folktronica of the early 2000s. Madonna’s Music is the biggest and arguably best of that genre with plenty of songs that you can tell are decently composed with promising subject matters but the whole production style is so dated and annoying that I still can’t appreciate it beyond a few tracks that rise above the trends they were chasing.

I didn't get through as much of this as I was hoping. It is okayish.

This was a chore to get through.

I don't love Madonna in general, though some of her offerings are in my saved pile of shit to get to later. But Madonna and this electronic nightmare totally missed the target for me. Would not recommend.

I like Madonna, but I would not tell anybody they need to listen to this electronica wallpaper before they die. At least the version on Deezer doesn't have the American Pie cover. I did have to misophonia skip some tracks with whispering, though. NOPE!

Insipid shite

Terrible start. Try hard electronic beats. If this wasn't Madonna this album wouldn't be on the list. Did less in second half of the album to it's benefit

Didn’t love it. I’ve never really been much of a fan but I prefer her earlier pop content if forced to listen. The dance type songs were what I preferred here.

Did not enjoy, did not hate 2/5

Not the best Madonna album. Fine listen

What a baffling choice for a Madonna album for this list. This is so mediocre, and sometimes it’s just not good at all. There aren’t any real highs, but some definite lows.

This is my second of the three Madonna albums on this list and just based on these alone I don’t understand how she maintained her icon status so long.

It's nowhere near the levels of the best Madge - Frozen, or Ray of Light, or even the early big pop bangers. For one thing, it feels like Madonna adjusting to what music was popular at the time, rather than shaping pop music, as she did through the 80s. It's not particularly bad, and there is one really cool song that feels much more modern than it is - What It Feels Like For A Girl - but overall it's pretty forgettable.

Waaaayyyyy past her prime.

really strange borderline annoying production choices. i feel like they produced this album without headphones on and then didn’t listen to the final product before hitting publish lol

This was Russian roulette for good songs. The title track, for me at least, really works and holds up today. And then the rest of the album happens.... I can't lie, there's probably 3 songs here that I even remotely like. I can't stand the fucking stop start thing that she keeps putting in. It irritates the life out of me as it has no purpose and without an interesting melody and exceptional vocals, it just grates on the ears. For me, Madonna has never been an album artist, but the hits here are not enough to justify having this be a must listen. I don't hate this, but this is a serious decline for Madonna at this point. And given that 'American Life' is next in her discography here, I'd say that this album set her on a path that would kill her relevance to popular culture. Fav Track: Music

El pop de toda la vida cumplidor

Just so standard and boring, did not age well. Someone called her cover of American Pie a war crime and a human rights violation and that could not be more accurate YEESH

Not for me

This is generous, saved by 1 or 2 songs.

I liked a few songs but overall not big on it. 2.5 for me but I’ll go 2

Who made this list? Ugh. I wanted to like this one, but it was just so late 90s-early 2000s club drivel. And then to end it off with that horrible American pie cover? Ugh. Just ugh. 3/10

didn't like, too flat

Felt like a soulless attempt to try something new. Maybe in 2000 it worked but listening to it now it’s bizarre and unpleasant.

Bit boring.

(2.75)

Banger opener then meh

How did this album get here?

This was definitely trash but a couple fun moments i guess

I don’t think there’s anything interesting about this album.

A few songs in, so far, so boring. I am not going to make it to the end of this. Is it more about having continuing sales than about being creative--see how different I am? But not too different--I'm Madonna after all, just a little techno now.

Really dull!!! And what a hateful cover of American Pie.

I liked Madonna well enough in the 80s/early 90s but paid zero attention to this album. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I didn’t hate this. That is until the last track. “American Pie” isn’t a great song but whatever she did to it should be criminal. I am taking this rating down 2 stars for that song. I feel worse about humanity after hearing it.

What a strange album Madonna doing autotune - ugh The cover of American Pie - a musical war-crime A couple of the other songs are ok if listened to away from the rest of the ablum But as a 49 minute listening experience, I am very grateful for the skip button Such a shame, after 1998's wonderful Ray of Light album, which to me remains her career highlight

Why would you add cybernetic upgrades to Madonna? She's already a dangerous individual after assassinating Weird Al & her affiliatation with Pablo Esobar's drug ring. And whatever the fuck she did to that pie. I may trust Jason Biggs with American Pie than Madonna.

I liked Ray of Light but this is not it. The whole album feels embarrassingly disingenuous like that scene from The Matrix where Trinity tells Neo she loves him and that’s why he can’t be dead, complete with the obnoxious whisper voice.

Listened to this after lunch on a relatively boring workday. Terrible idea. Nothing interesting at all going on here. 2/5.

269/1001 Madonna - Music Heard before? ❎ Revisit? ❎ I'm trying to think of why this on the list. For the most part, it's rather middle of the road balladry with a country tinge to it. Not offensive enough to be a one star, but equally pretty poor.

Surprisingly credible. I grew up with Madonna seemingly fitting in with 90s-00s manufactured pop, and as a narrow minded kid I never challenged that thought. I'm often a little bit surprised to realise that she's involved in some quite credible art. This record started with some interesting mature electronic sounds that I was quite into. This reappeared a couple of times throughout. Also featuring were some things that felt like uninteresting 90s-ish pop to me. Wish it were more consistently in that explorative electric space

Generic late 90s/early 00s pop album. The hits have aged poorly, and I feel little reason to come back to this album. Generic pop from 2 and a half decades ago tends not to age the best.

An absolute steaming pile of auto-tuned garbage pop music. Madonna deserves no credit for her work on this album that pushes no artistic boundaries nor develops novel sounds or ideas, and the album's producer deserves none for staunchly following the trends in pop music of the day, all of which aged poorly.

Don't enjoy the electronic dance vibe. Better Madonna albums.

This came up and I said, "oh cool, some Madonna, I haven't listened to her in a while, she's not a favorite, but it's something different to break the 70's and 80's rocktamist streak I've been on." I'm kind of glad every time a women artist comes up. Then I saw what album it was and I was genuinely baffled, why is this on the list. I didn't love Ray of light, but it was a huge album and an important moment in the career of a pretty iconic artist. This continued the trajectory of the previous album, but not in a great direction. A time capsule of a pre 911 sound and and vibe, but others were doing it better. I'll take Britney over this, feels more honest. Maybe I'm being harsh, but everything about this album feels inauthentic and pandering. Not into it. Not really a fair comparison, but this came out 2 weeks before Kid A if we want to check out someone experimenting with electronic sounds. Felt really long, wanted it to be over. Not quite 1 star, because it wasn't upsetting sounding from moment to moment, some of the songs are perfectly catchy if fully vapid. The most 2 star album yet though, can't imagine why it was included on the list.

Madonna trying to sound like 00's Britney - made me a little sad to be honest. While I have huge respect for Madonna as an artist, her music is just not my thing (Plus she really butchered American Pie!?) I feel sad that we live in a world where it seems people like Madonna feel they need to freeze their faces to stay 'young', and make music that sounds like someone else, just to stay relevant. BUT - you do you Madonna, maybe this was the kind of music you WANTED to make, and maybe you don't feel like you HAVE to have plastic surgery but you just WANT to. Nobody's Perfect. Girls just want to have botox, I guess.

A couple of songs were okay, maybe just due to familiarity (music and don't tell me), but most of the rest just faded away. The American pie cover didn't serve anything. High 1/low 2

Great production and at times experimental. But not great song writing compared to her earlier work

American Pie of every bit as bad as I remember it, but it's still the best song on the album. The album really stands on its production which is excellent, but can't sustain interest for a whole album. So it starts off feeling like a 3 but ends up a 2 for me.

Music - 3 Impressive instant - 2 Runaway lover - 1 I deserve it - 2 Amazing - 2 Nobody's perfect - 1 Don't tell me - 3 What it feels like for a girl - 2 Paradise (not for me) - 1 Gone - 3

It's just so predictable and clean. All the sounds sound like pre programmed drum machine kits from the factory, no effort to dirty them up. Bland song structures, no real hooks save for the title track. I know Madonna has much stronger material. This is a 2 from me.

Honestly I think there are a lot of better Madonna efforts that could have been on this list. IMO this isn’t one of her best. After dominating the 80s and 90s, the 2000s was not Madonna’s best decade.

Like 2 good songs ish

Many of my friends loved her music. And she was a cultural moment, especially early on. I saw Desperately Seeking Susan--with who, I wonder?--and enjoyed the story and her cool. But I hated it then, and I still dislike it. Nope!

Inoffensive in the main, but sappy and boring. The autotune dates it badly. Two stars.

I'm surprised that another modern Madge album is on the list. And, again, though she is obviously one of the most important pop stars of all time, these later albums are just not worth being put here. Madge is flagging badly by this point. I would've though her earlier albums would have been more represented. Anyway, this album being here is pointless. Best Tracks: Music; Don't Tell Me; American Pie

Surprised that the majority of the Madonna albums have not been from the 80s. This is not the strongest entry

September 18, 2000 was probably the day the music died... (Sorry, couldn't skip this obvious pun) As I already hinted at in my other Madonna review, I don’t think it’s worth examining her music in isolation—and certainly not entire albums. “Music” also contains a few well-known singles (“Music,” “What It Feels Like…,” “American Pie”) and, apart from that, a lot of boredom. If that were enough, wouldn’t Whitney Houston, for example, also have to be on this list? Exactly. Long story short: “Music” sounds just as uninteresting today as it did 25 years ago.

Musically sound dance tunes, but when it’s not auto tuned, she relies on a vibrato that’s so consistent I’m not sure whether it’s actually another effect. This is not my kind of pop.

So 2000. Auto tune isnt great. This album is all over the place. Dont Tell Me was the only decent song. The American Pie cover is bad.

Not great bar one song.

The title track and Don't Tell Me are pretty good, the rest are not.

Finally a female artist!! I’m glad it’s Madonna too I do like her music. Although I don’t like this album nor any songs on it. It’s too country-pop for me.

Not great. I was kinda digging it until the auto tune started. I have allergies to auto tune.

This is supposed to be experimental? How?

It's okay, solid 2.5......you know, average

I liked it less than expected

Not for me. Only 2 tracks I can call favourite (normally 3) tunes. 1. Music 2. Don’t Tell Me 3. ….

A concerted attempt to be current in 2000, which did not set it up to age particularly well. She could still find some songs that worked for the dancefloor but too much of this feels like her trying on clothes that don't quite fit. The last song about authenticity is a bit ludicrous when this is Madonna using clumsy autotune and dressed as a cowgirl I skipped the bonus track. You know the one

After Ray Of Light, this one felt like a real letdown, pretty much marking the beginning of the Madonna career slide. That last album was so cohesive, but Music just feels like a weird mix of stuff that doesn't always work. The production sounds a bit too sterile at times, and the autotune is annoying, especially on "Nobody's Perfect". It's missing the heart you usually get from her, and it feels like a bunch of generic club tracks and silly gimmicks that haven't aged well. That said, it's not a total bust. The title track "Music" is still a killer pop song, and "Don't Tell Me" is awesome, mixing acoustic guitar with some cool production. Those singles showed she was still ahead of the curve, but as an album, it's a bit weak compared to her best stuff. It's a brave try at something new, but it just feels a bit...dated.

Nothing special. However „Paradise” is great song in my opinion.

OMG MADONNA HI FAVS (top 3): impressive instant, paradise (not for me), gone mençoes honrosas: music, runaway lover, amazing, american pie po me hypei supper por ser um album da madonna mas KKKKK eh ne... mas tem umas boas nota final: 2.5/5

So I'm not anti-Madonna in general, I know she had some fun songs back in the day. I appreciated the vaguely pro-trans language at the beginning of "What It Feels Like for a Girl," and one or two tracks had fun club music-y things going on that reminded me of Rozalla or whatever from the early 90s. So some of this was ok? But most of it was a chore, with autotune, stupid lyrics, and as a bonus some faux-chanteusey nonsense in one of the songs. 2 stars. It would have been 1 star if I'd had to listen to the cover of "American Pie" that's on the extended version - I already despise the original, so threatening me with a cover of that song by Madonna is the kind of thing that would get me to confess in an interrogation. "Anything but that, I swear I'll talk!"

The most generic bang average 00's pop ever

The title track is...something in a bottle. Not lightning, but it hits all the Y2K musical brain itches. That doesn't make it a good song, or a bad song (it's an ok song) it just hits a little bit of everything. And this kind of...a little bit of everything that was happening in 2000 keeps on through the album. It's not good. It's not bad. It's ok, which actually makes it worse than a lot of the things that it's referencing. And it's important as a time capsule that seems to touch the pop music zeitgeist, but it's also entirely forgettable. Inch deep, several feet wide, and I more or less had it pegged by track 2. To be clear: I am not the target audience here. It's background music for me. Almost made a Moby joke here, but then remembered that was Gwen Stefani, but, y'know, same stuff either way. This album is also notable for Madonna's reinvention - difficult for a pop singer to do, and maybe not quite successful in retrospect, it was at least current at the time. Feels a little bit like "industry plant, but an already household name." Hell, Katy Perry didn't pull this one off. Anyway, this is a weird one I keep coming around on. Again, it's not a good album. But...maybe it is a bad one? There are pieces that really are specifically not good, but Madonna is talented and can carry pretty much anything. Ultimately, I guess that it's just kind of there, which isn't great. Takes it down a notch from the coward's 3.

There is a lot going on in this pop album, and I don’t mean that as a compliment. This album feels like watching an old movie with early CGI. At the time of release it probably felt groundbreaking and interesting to see all the new techniques being used. And now it just feels bad. It’s dated and kind of off putting. Even the catchiest songs are plagued with weird electronic drones and overlapping sounds that make them unenjoyable. It just is not for me.

Madonna needs to apologise immediately to Don McLean for absolutely butchering American Pie Even I'm offended listening to that. A true hate crime was commited 2 ⭐️

Fuck this sucks so hard. Music and Don't Tell Me are nostalgic bangers but Nobody's Perfect was a haaaaard listen. She really said nothing equals nothing and that's what this album is, do better MADONNA

The more I listened to this, the more I disliked it. Sorry Madge

Fuck me this is bad. 2 barely recognisable songs with a hit of pop attraction. Beginning to have doubt about the authors of this compendium

Going into this one, I was expecting awful. Dreading it honestly, but it was fine. Seems like Madonna hopped on the bandwagon of auto tune and electro beats of the time and it doesn’t feel exactly right for her. But What It Feels Like for a Girl is a great song.

I'm not really a Madonna fan, but this album might have made me a hater. I Deserve It doesn't suck, but the rest is a showcase of the worst trends in music at the time. It's lyrically vapid and overly edited. The heavy rhythm tracks clash with the vocals and the melodies. It plays dress-up with country without seriously embracing it. It's simultaneously empty empowerment and adolescent hedonism. The electronic manipulation is grating and meaningless. Also, the bonus track is insulting. It turns a song of grief and reflection into a flat, poppy dance track. It sands away any meaning or personality and replaces it with a polished corporate product. It truly is representative of the sound the 2000's. Also, it fails on a large, structural level, as opposed to other albums on this list that I hate on a pure, sonic, moment to moment level. Because of that, I guess it's not a one.

Just gonna put it out there... I don't think that late-90s, early 00s Madonna was really at the peak of her career or putting out can't miss, game changing albums.

this was pretty bad. i dont understand the production choices they made on this, they dont really fit these songs at all. the only song that really interested me was dont tell me and that was mostly the intro.

The first song is absolute trash. I don't care for this style of music. The album gets a second star only because it's Madonna and she's not without incredible talent, even if it's tragically misapplied on this album.

Actually listening to a Madonna album is a good example of why I'm doing this. Enjoyed Don't Tell Me with its fairy unique stuttering background, and the slightly more stripped back I Deserve It. In contrast, the auto tune on several songs and especially Nobody's Perfect feels horribly dated. The cover of American Pie at the end of the album on spotify is one of the worst things I've ever heard, but I think it is a bonus track. Overall a very 2000 album! 3/10

The Hit Factory (New York). Weitere hervorstechende Titel sind „Impressive Instant“, „Runaway Lover“, „Amazing“ und „Paradise (Not For Me)“.

Such a generic name for an album. But this does bring massive nostalgia. Not sure that Madonna overusing autotune constitutes classic status.

not he best album from Madonna

"Music" is the second commercial pop album I've had within a week. Some sections were unbearable to listen to. I'm not a big fan of Madonna, especially after hearing "Music". The only thing I loved about "Music" is the backing tracks by Ahmadzai and others. If it weren't for the production value, I would've had a worse experience. 2 stars for "Music".

frankly boring

Mostly okay. Some dance floor songs, some radio songs. Madonna appears to accomplish what she set out to do here. Mostly not my thing but she does it very well so there's that. I did skip the auto tune song, using that as an effect is like fingernails on a chalkboard to me. Oh no, did not need that cover of "American Pie". Not at all.

In which a rich, middle-aged lady shows herself to be about five years behind the club culture curve. Then has a smash hit anyway. Not saying it's terrible but it's a shame that this is how the mainstream operates.

Alrighty. Interesting... Not even sure what to say about this, not a big fan at all, but at least so far on the 2nd song it's a bit better than that Britney album I had to listen... Cannot see giving this more than 2 stars, I highly doubt even after I listen to it whole, that my opinion will change that much. Maybe even 1

i had high expectations for this since it's madonna but i was disappointed

Was fun. Not my style though. 2.5

Not her best album. I guess autotune was new at the time, but not something I enjoy.

Generic electro pop drivel

this cover of the classic song "American Pie" should be a crime

Not for more at all.

Weird that she has her country music costume on but the album is mostly dance club fare. Her voice sounds pretty good here but I’m assuming some electronic manipulation is likely going on. At any rate this music is not for me but is does have a generally decent sound. Fans of this style should enjoy it.

Didn't like it at the time. Don't like it now.

bullshit ass title. Shoud be Kinda Shit Music. Veery early 2000s sound. Definitely didn’t age well. But also it just doesn’t have the bops I expect from someone like the big Madonna. Absolutely not an album you have to listen to before you die.

One fun song that has lasted as nostalgia but otherwise horrific

ui das album und wies tönt hani soo nöd gern. so de computer 2000er choppy stuff. music isch so en schlechte soong. so bi allne ambitione wo bide madonna au bewundernswert sind mit ihrem erneuerigsdrang, ich find do isch sie ine meeeega komischi richtig. runaway lover au es nüt vomne song, sehr dance mässig aber nöd so richtig well d melodie isch huuuere moll und trurig. i deserve it isch au fett ass mann huuere lasch würkli. und s tönt au afoch nervig? amazing isch chliiii besser. aso s het chli drive und no schöni background gsäng. dont tell me het de papi us irgendme grund if ipod gha früener. de isch huere iigängig. aber de komisch start stop gitarreding findi immernonig cool. what it feels mike isch okay i guess? ich bin echt au chli überrascht wie wenig spass ich han und wie guet das anschinend achoo isch domols. american pie isch glaub s einzige cover und ich finds de best. vorallem d gitarre am schluss vo. refrain isch reeecht geil. einzigs mol woni d instrument cool find. glaub dasch es 2. jop es isch.

I have to imagine there is another Madonna album on this list because if not, this is a sad representation of what she can do. I mean, the album is fine overall but nothing spectacular. I see why the songs that became hits were chosen - nothing else really stands out and I just feel like it is trying too hard to be a relevant pop/edm album but doesn’t hit the mark on either very well.

This had 2 good songs the rest were meh.

Where Madonna briefly stops pretending to be British. The title track is a banger. Ray of Light was heaps better

I don't think this will get repeat listens from me, but this was interesting, had good lyrics and interesting music. I just maybe didn't like this as much as classic era Madonna music.

Light 2

Heard some before; 1.5; Not really sure why this album is on here. Madonna has some other albums that are much better than this, and this one really doesn't hold up well at all with the passage of time. Feels like it's trying to blend elements of trip hop with other production tools from around the turn of the century. And the lyrics just aren't very good at all. And the tracks based around the guitar are just very plain and boring. Favorite Track: Don't Tell Me

This album came out when I was in high school and I thought Madonna felt out of touch and was very upset with the atrocious cover of "American Pie". Now I'm about the same age she was when she made this and I get what she was trying to do and knowing Madonna has a large gay fan base makes me excited she made some club songs for them, but this album is not for me. I hope this isn't Madonna's only entry on this list. This can't be her best work.

To go from Ray of Light to this is quite a step down. It’s fine for the most part, but not her strongest effort

Nah 10/1/26

Had to put myself in the shoes of a teen in the early 2000s and I could see how this would hit back then, but obviously not my taste now

I would just never listen to any of them again

Madonna is so much better than this. Why autotune her? She doesn’t need it!

I didn't really like most of this, but it's interesting to hear what passed for experimental in early aughts pop. The lyrics are pretty consistently awful. Music and Don't Tell Me are both undeniable bangers, particularly the latter. Strong 2.

Forgettable. I didn't find the music bad for the most part, but it just didn't do much to engage me. Not a single song I would add to a playlist, or listen to again on purpose. The version of American Pie, a song I don't care for much anyway, is criminal. I seriously question how this album made it onto this list.

Ugh, another Madonna album and William Orbit certainly isn't helping things here. The 2nd half of the album, was actually much better...until Madonna attempted to cover American Pie. Wow, that was amazing. Amazingly bad.

Generic ass-pop. Madonna has great stuff, this album isn't it.

Yeah man, plenty of artists put out something worth listening to 16 years into their careers. I just don't think Madonna is one of them.

Boring and did not age well AT ALL, choosing autotune was not a great decision, the songs without it are okay. 1.75/5

Music by Madonna is an OK album, but it’s far from her strongest work, which makes its inclusion on the 1001 Albums list a bit surprising. The shift towards a more overtly dance-focused sound is interesting, and there are moments where the production and beats really work. However, despite its slickness, the album never quite feels like it goes anywhere meaningful, lacking the spark and songwriting depth of her best records. There are some genuinely enjoyable pop moments. The title track Music is a great tune and still sounds infectious, while Runaway Lover and What It Feels Like for a Girl are well-crafted, memorable pop songs. Elsewhere, though, the album struggles to maintain momentum. American Pie, in any of its forms, remains a miss for me flat and unnecessary and Paradise (Not for Me) fails to leave much of an impression. Favourite tracks: Music; Runaway Lover; What It Feels Like for a Girl Least favourite tracks: American Pie; Paradise (Not for Me) Album artwork: A classic Madonna album cover

Nothing particularly special, some songs are a bit nostalgic from my childhood, but others have that distict 2000's feel.

Madonna, bringing whatever to the mainstream since forever (or atleast since her second maybe third album). The first couple are bangers for aure but its not because of madonna. And she’s karoke level good at singng at best (listen to i deserve it). Credit to her for finding interesting fringe artists (in music and dance and s&m)and them exploiting the fuck out of them (we could hail her for bringing light to talent but ultimately she’s repackaged it and made a shit load for herself) but now we have the internet, meh, who needs her? I suppose there is a place for good curators but you dont usally idolise the curator. You might thank thwm for their work or admire their taste but you dont salute them for the actual art. She even apologises on nobody’s perfect while perfecting her pitch via autocorrect. FFS.

Well I guess music was not in a good place in the year 2000. What It Feels Like for a Girl narrowly saved this from a 1 just by being a competent pop song.

I remember when this came out and I thought this was the end of her career. I was right

Maybe it’s a generational problem but Madonna will always feel like drunk mom music to me.

Well this was mostly garbage. Shout out to Impressive Enstant and Runaway Lover for being the only semi-redeeming moments for me. (Who knew I'd respond to what I can only describe as futurist house?) Things dropped off a cliff shortly thereafter though. The obviously experimental folksy/country vibe was pretty terrible. Then a bunch of generic dance pop, some of which sounded like experimental demos in all the wrong ways (stutter guitar on Don't Tell Me, I'm talking about you here). American Pie cover was the breaking point for me, and made me question ending my own life it was so bad. By the time I hit the Raga I didn't know what the fuck I was listening to. This is a complete disaster of mismatched styles in a desperate attempt to compete with Britney and Christina in the charts. It's a singles collection, not an album.
