After the great and mature artistic triumph that was Ray of Light, Madonna was probably disappointed that it wasn't also on par with her previous works commercially. So, Madge went right back into radio-ready songs with Music. But despite it's title track becoming her final Billboard #1, the rest of the songs are actually surprising left-field for a pop album. There's the jagged folktronica sound that Madonna would explore more on her next album, American Life, and there's also some Cher-esque autotuned vocals. The end result is, however, quite fractured and struggled to find its own identity. Even the cover artwork hints at a country-inspired album while it's definitely not one. Madonna’s Music didn’t do a whole lot for me, but I’ll give it credit where it’s due—“Runaway Lover” was a legit highlight. Maybe I’ve got a soft spot for early 2000s EDM vibes after all. The rest of the album felt a bit dated, and not in a fun nostalgic way. More like a reminder of when auto-tune started taking over pop music and everyone thought it sounded futuristic. Not terrible, but not something I’d revisit often.

Mid tier Madonna
never been much of a fan, but i have immense respect for her and everything she has done. tons of talent and a trailblazer in her field. i must say most of these songs are catchy as hell… except when she tries the country thing. it just kind of falls flat.

First two songs start so promising with Madonna doing some fun things that sound fresh even today but then the rest of the album slips into more safe choices and less experimentation.
Ok Madonna- you are talented, but that is the only thing carrying this album. I admit though that it was a good palette cleanser in the moment.

This isn't for me. There have been way worse albums on this list. But Madonna just is not my speed.
Looked at the track list before it started and recognized none of the songs ... turns out that "Hey Mr. DJ" song is actually the title track. Recognized a lot more of this music than I had thought, but none of it has ever really been what I want to hear. 2.5
When this album came out, you couldn't go to any gathering of a bunch of white people without hearing it. Parties, dances, wedding receptions. They were playing "Music" and "Don't Tell Me" for sure and probably some others sprinkled in. Maybe even "Believe" by Cher in there too since it was kind of the kickoff for this pop girlie autotune electronica phase. Might have popped in "Ray of Light" too, why not. The y2k vibes and the economy were strong. The receptions were open bar. We had all kinds of "healthy" granola bars that were covered in chocolate. Life was so good. This album aged ooookay.
I'm not a big Madonna fan so I had low expectations before I started listening and was pleasantly surprised. A mix of techno/electronica with a little country-adjacent type music that is not bad. Music and Don't Tell Me both stood out. I did not care for Nobody's Perfect with the maxed-out auto-tune and I'll just pretend I didn't hear the American Pie cover.
Madonna’s country album? Ok then. I only remember the single off of it. Let’s see where else the album goes. Well first off I stand corrected: not a country album at all. I don’t hate the late 90s-early 2000s electronica production at all, it’s actually kinda fun. 3 stars if you ignore the bonus track, which we don’t talk about.
as if the title track wasn't already the most y2k artefact imaginable, ali g appears in the video. a quarter century is a long time indeed.

Not as bad as I expected but it's still mostly dance pop. Probably two and a half stars.
I liked it. Somewhat unexpectedly. I especially enjoyed the ballads. Obviously Madonna is a mature artist at this point in her career with little to prove except that she can create compelling material that reflects an artist that still has something to say. 1/2 star deduction for American Pie which adds little to the original besides a modern production. 3 stars

Interesting but a bit too electronic for me.
This album felt kind of monumental at first, but the more I thought about it, the less strongly I felt about that. I'll explain. While girl pop icons like Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera were carving out the new girl pop paths, Madonna was doing her own thing, refusing to become a follower rather than a leader in the pop space. This album is a reflection of that: electronic dance pop, quite different from the typical girl pop of the time. So that feels like a big deal. But upon further reflection, it seems like a little less of a big deal because she actually was ALREADY doing this, starting with 1998's "Ray of Light". "Ray of Light" feels infinitely more groundbreaking sonically than "Music" does. The music in "Ray of Light" seems to pack a more meaningful punch and feels less hollow than "Music". The title track, while ridiculously catchy and never skippable, still has a certain lackluster to it, though it is pretty much the album's best offering. Anyway, I baseline enjoyed this because I'm an absolute sucker for electronic pop, but yeah, it seems to lack heart. Hoping "Ray of Light" is on this project somewhere to set right things right. A pretty flat 3.
Not bad
Wow Music took me straight back to that era. I didn't know most of this album, but it encapsulates that period of music really well. 3* Highlights: music and don't tell me (because nostalgia)

Not bad, I've heard the hits from this album but never the whole thing. It's pretty good, the non hit songs are more of the same kind of pop music but it isn't tiring and has a catchy beat. Not sure I would go out of my way to listen to this again but it is not bad at all. If I happened upon it I wouldn't be upset.
The glitch-country-of “don’t tell me” is pretty good. And the warm wave of electronica of “what it feels like for a girl” is nice. “Gone” is another good one. Madonna herself doesn’t exactly shine on this album, but I kinda like the production.
The two big singles from this are good songs, but they also belie how fantastically weird the album around them is. The rest of what's here sound like Madonna was listening to a lot of Air, but also sort of presages hyperpop and the wider crossover of French House? Like Homework was already out, and "Around the World" had had a little impact, but this album came out two months before "One More Time". It's not a *great* album, but it is a fascinating one, and a great example of Madonna's ability to anticipate trends, even in the middle portion of her career.
Not really a fan but there is enough here for 3 stars or C as a rating.

i KNOW i can’t be the only one who has seriously been vibing to some music lately… i enjoyed listening to this!! it always feels a little weird to, like, sit down and listen to a dancey pop album like this; nevertheless i did like it. yeah it’s cheesy but it’s cute!!! yay!!!
that was cute and fun. it sounds a bit dated to me though. it had a lot of leftover stylings of her 90s music but with some of the sort of early 2000s techno flourishes on it which made it really sound like a time capsule of that era in a way that i think did not age super well. i think that's typical of pop and it doesn't make it bad music, it just doesn't sound fresh in the way that some of her (even older) music still does. fav tracks: Runaway Lover, Gone, Impressive Instant

I'm, conflicted on this one. It would have been genuinely groundbreaking at the time, inspiring ultimately better artists (Goldfrapp), but it also popularised the shit trend of autotune
Rating: 7/10 Very good album overall. The production was definitely the standout, blending pop with electronic and country. Pretty experimental and sounds like this album had a large influence on other 2000s pop artists. Most of this aged pretty well (besides the horrendous autotune) and is mostly pretty catchy as well. Favorite songs: Music, I Deserve It, Don't Tell Me, What It Feels Like for a Girl, Paradise (Not for Me), Gone. Worst song: Nobody's Perfect.

This album wouldn't exist without Cher's Believe. With that said, there are some truly fun songs on here if you don't take it too seriously. Afterall, "it's the millennium."
Honestly surprised by how much I enjoyed this. The production was minimal yet polished. The combination of acoustic guitar, house style beats, and pop vocals made for a fun listen. 3.5 / 5

Madonna's extraordinary collaboration with Scottish legend, Hamish the DJ. I've not listened to this album for over twenty years. I remember it being a surprising continuation of the redemption of Madonna after her slippage of the mid 90s. Music is actually a corking track - the bass is thumping and pumping and it leads nicely to Impressive Instant, which is a track that had completely exited my memory until it kicked off with an absolutely wicked four-on-the-floor beat that invigorates me in ways I might even be ashamed of it wasn't so damn good. Clearly Madonna had taken notice of Boris wosshischops' mixing for Moloko's Sing It Back because it's almost the same level of good. Runaway Lover suffers a bit for being too "out there" - it can't support the tempo it sets itself and feels five years too late, missing Prodigy and Kosheen doing this what it tries to, but nowhere near as well. The vocals sound disconnected and that's a shame. We then come onto a bit of a "Can you try and make me sound a bit like Dido?" sort of track in I deserve it, and I'm tempted to skip. In fact, at over four minutes it IS a skip, because it does everything it needs to within about 50 seconds. Amazing, put onto this album in the year 2000, has incredible resonance in late 2024 with "Hagmaxxing" being the word du jour. Madonna was doing it back in the day, Gen Z. Nobody's Perfect is an abomination of vocoding and it gets a skip straight into the "Madonna being a bastard hybrid of Green Day and Cheryl Crow" that is Don't Tell Me, and that almost gets a skip too. It doesn't, but only because I quite like that start/stop thing it does. It's also (weirdly) the most "Madonna-voice" track in the whole recording. And I quite like that. She has actually got a good voice, and it's nice to hear it almost unfettered here. The whole rest of this album can do one, though. Do I know what it feels like for a girl? No, surprisingly. As other commentors here have said, that cover version of American Pie is a pickled turd. Rating this album for the first 2 tracks, it'd get a comfortable 5. It doesn't hold its energy well enough to be more than a 3.

When one thinks of Madonna albums, one easily thinks of any of her first five; Madonna; Like a Virgin; True Blue; Like a Prayer; and Erotica. those albums are trailblazers and ones that are truly mandatory listens. Music and its one hit that felt like Madonna was reinventing herself… again are okay but not an example of a good portion of her output. 3/5
Listened to this with my husband, on our way up north for a little weekend vacation. I mostly liked it but it did sound pretty dated. I forgot all about the other non-“Music” singles on this.
Better than expected. Some great production flourishes and more interesting subject matters. Sadly it also contains one of the most dogshit cover versions in human history, of American Pie. Impressive as I couldn't think of a way to make that mawkish turd worse myself!
I remember this being the album where Madonna completely lost me. It just felt like she was trying to keep up with where popular music was going, but it didn't feel like there was much if any of her in the music. Actually sitting down to listen to the album didn't really change my opinion about that. It's fine, but I also can't justify this album making this list. Ray of Light I could understand, but this album feels far too pedestrian to be one of the 1001 albums I should listen to before my execution 3/5
It’s true, music does make the people come together. And I guess sometimes it unites the bourgeois and the rebels. But more often it just lets the bourgeois cosplay as rebels. Just because some rich kids go out to the club and dance with the riff raff to the music of one of the wealthiest artists of all time doesn’t mean they’re gonna wake up from their hangover the next day and try to change the world. It’s all performative and temporary.

Then the awful auto-tune in Nobody's Perfect and the annoying sound cutting out on the next track Don't Tell Me, I have to take a point off. I'd still rather listen to any of her first four albums.
Not heard any of this before. It surprised me how different it was to what I'm used to from her. Despite being intriguing the experimental sounds don't pay off on every track. I do like how each track sounds so distinct to the previous one. There were some decent tracks but I think I'd need to listen again to fully get the album. Madonna 3/3 (after LaP and RoL) HL: “Amazing”, “What It Feels Like For a Girl”, title track Can’t love it, can’t hate it. Exists in a blind spot I have in late 90’s/early aughts pop. Orbit’s work on the track “Amazing” makes me think I underrated his work on Ray of Light. It does anticipate 2000s dance-pop trends as some critics have suggested, but to me they’re all the ones that make me look back and think “what a tacky era of music” But to illustrate my biases, I put on Robyn’s Body Talk (2010) on for the first time the other day, and I don’t think that aged the best either. Would definitely choose that over Madonna’s eighth album on a list of this caliber, though

Mixed reaction to this one. I wasn’t looking forward to it when it popped up. However the first bunch of songs I thought were quite good. Unfortunately by the time I hit Nobody’s Perfect the electronically manipulated voice had worn me down and it lost me from that point forward.
The American Pie cover sucks, but there’s some great songs.
Experimental weird album. The production is crazy. Sounds like they listened to daft punks homework and a bunch of 90s techno. The sings is strange. Madonna is strange. I was interested by this album and could see it being influential but I don’t think it would be accurate to say I liked this album. Bizarre stuff
Forgettable
As much as I dislike electronica, pop and dance music, I have to say this album is very good. Madonna reinventing herself after years of domination and fussioning a ton of different generes to make this experimental album which turned out to be better than ever expected. Dont love any specific song but after listening to it in order without interruptions I can say its a top Madonna album and probably top of that genere. This rates high because of the context of Madonna having to bring something new and different to the table and she brought it. The slow songs kill the vibe mood for me but still those are decent songs.
Not her best, but she reinvents herself each album. The autotune song had to go, though.
7/24/24. Admittedly, this is my first time giving Madonna a true shot. I have to say I liked this one, went in without expectations. Pretty clean and enjoyable pop record, just can't decide if this should be a 3 or a 4. My true rating is a 3.5.
Hope there is more Madonna on the list if this is essential. Some bangers though

"I deserve it" and "amazing" were the best tracks for me, the rest was a bit bland/boring, wasn't what I was expecting from madonna.
Much less worse than anticipated. Holy shit is that American Pie cover the absolute worst thing I've heard in a long time.
A slightly hunched, crabbit Madonna stares us down from the album cover. There is something uncanny about her visage, which is just as well; for half this album she sounds like a glitching android. The other half, well, it's Madonna - she sings with the same expression as most hostages give in proof-of-life videos. That's not to say that there isn't any interest in 'Music'. In fact, as a studio confection there's plenty to enjoy, Madonna and her producers throwing the entire box of tricks at almost every tune going. Just as well, because beneath the bells and whistles are some rather cookie cutter melodies and uninspired song craft. However, I'm almost missing the point here - 'Music' very much is a collection of gaudy sounds and aural gewgaws - it's tinsel all the way down, boys.
I’ve always discounted this album as auto-tune early-2000s bad dance music. After listening to it properly I still don’t like this Madonna like I do 80s Madonna, but it kind of works together and she hadn’t changed as much as I thought. It’s weird they auto-tune her sometimes when she can clearly sing. Probably needs another listen, sadly I don’t have time. I have discovered it has a French producer so another example of French EDM seeming to be not my thing. Fave Track: I Deserve It Rating: 3

3/5. These are some solid electronic pop songs. I do hear the genre bending, and I think it works for a lot of the faster songs but when it slows down, it's hard to really follow and enjoy for some of them. There is even some influence from Alt Rock, R&B, country that I can hear. It's unique and enjoyable but I don't think it's perfect. It might go up in rating on more listens, which I do want to do, but don't think I super enjoyed it save for some songs. Best Song: Music, What It Feels Like For A Girl, Paradise (Not For Me)

First Madonna album I've listened to. It was fine.
Pop music. Over produced. Some people love it. This is the first time I’ve ever purposefully listened to Madonna. It sounded exactly how I thought it would.
This wasn't bad.
The second album in Madonna's maturity phase. We've got some millennium pop optimism going on but it has actually aged better than some of the other albums from this era. A few solid songs make this a good collection.
There are a few duds on this. It's mostly really good though.
This album made quite a comeback for me... It started out pretty bad but really enjoyed the mid to back end of the record. I still prefer the earlier Madonna album, Like a Prayer, but pleasantly surprised.
This is not a preferred genre in my rotation, but I do recognize the cultural significance of the artist, and have much respect for the way she has been able to reinvent herself and evolve continuously to maintain relevance for 40 years. All that said, this album pales in comparison to everything she did leading up to this release. The two singles merit and I can see where they achieved mainstream success. There rest is average at best IMO. 2.5/5
I thought I was gonna be like a virgin when listening to this one since I really don’t know much of her songs outside of the hits. But then around track six I heard that stupid Cher-inspired autotune vocal modulation effect and I realized I wasn’t being touched for the very first time. I liked the acoustic meets electronic element on some tracks, but outside of the two known singles it all just started to sound the same.
The fact that THIS Madonna album is on the list makes me think we have another 2-3 Madonna albums to go... she has never been my favorite and not sure why it was selected to represent her catalog. I did enjoy Music and Don't Tell Me, but the rest is kinda meh (especially when she leans heavily on Autotune). 2.5/5

Kinda surprised that Music was picked, this really feels like M was chasing the trends instead of forming them. Additionally, William Orbit’s production doesn’t really hold up. But, this is the first Madonna era I really remember- I knew who she was and some of her older songs, but I vividly recall hearing and seeing the videos for the title track and “Don’t Tell Me” often. So there’s definitely nostalgic attachment to it, even if this isn’t her best. C
Wasn't expecting to see Madge pop up again. I suppose this album is evocative of very specific moment in pop culture when she was still relevant and not yet completely cringeworthy. (I say this as someone who went through a HUGE Madonna phase, and did in fact see her on tour in 2004). She did do a bit of a country western aesthetic revival that influenced early aughts fashion. Music and Don't Tell Me were both hits with memorable music videos that got lots of rotation on MuchMusic and/or MTV. It's what I expected though, the hits are hits and they still slap but the rest of this album is boring filler. There isn't anything edgy or exciting here. It's basic pop drivel. I do still love the classic or canon Madonna eras (1983-2005) and respect what she's done as an artist. But everything she's done after Confessions on a Dance Floor has been embarrassing to witness. I don't want to be ageist, BUT, I do wish she'd chosen to age a bit more gracefully like Cher has and act in a way befitting an icon; a way that doesn't diminish her legacy the way all the "edgy" lingerie, grills, and face filler are doing now.

Wow the opening track took me right back to that time. I like this because it’s basically an electronic album featuring Madonna. Producers deserve title credits!
Following her electro-pop success of Ray of Light, we see similar creativity and excellent electronic production on this record. This one is brighter, faster, and louder. It's also more traditional of a pop album than Ray of Light, which I think serves as a weakness. It's more predictable and it seems like the music is disjoint from Madonna's singing. She also shows less personality and emotion in these songs. The first 3 tracks are a strong start and gives you an idea what this album should have been. Instead, it takes a turn from there with 3 lame tracks: a lifeless ballad, a generic dance tune, and a Cher-level autotune disaster that drags on for 5 minutes of the same line over and over. "Don't Tell Me" is the only song that fits the "cowgirl" design she was going for, with a pleasant blend of electronic, pop, and country that doesn't go too crazy. The following track is some dreamy downtempo, a bit boring and repetitive but also pleasant. "Paradise" is the most creative song and could definitely fit on Ray of Light. And finally, "Gone" is an underwhelming but fitting closer. In comparison to Ray of Light, I do feel it's less consistent and less innovative. The highs don't reach the same, and the lows are just awful. But you do still have top-of-the-notch production skill, and there is quite a bit of surprising innovation throughout.
Seems only tangentially related to Madonna. Could have been anyone singing these tracks. I think I had heard 2 of the songs on here before. It was inoffensive and forgettable but okay for what it is.

This was quite fun despite some very odd production in places. The songwriting wasn’t quite as strong as the previous Madonna albums on this list (Like a Prayer and Ray of Light), and I’m surprised this made it on over something like True Blue. It was a good time though, even if a bit inconsistent

Madonna's entry into the 2000's after Ray of Light was bold and brash (more like belongs in the trash!) When pop stars such as Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and Jessica Simpson were modeling their careers after her, Madonna was choosing to innovate and experiment with her own music. The result is a mix of house, folk, downtempo, and other diverse sound influencing her approach to electropop. The result is a mixed bag where some songs definitely work better than others. I commend Madonna for being so willing to evolve and attempting to synthesize new elements. It's just that some parts of the album come across as painfully dated, and the American Pie cover should've been dropped.

This album was a pretty good pop album. A few of the songs were superhits from back in the day. All around it seemed to be pretty experimental with it's glitchy sounds and futuristic uses of electronics. It didn't succeed all the time, but was pretty good nonetheless. 3.3/5 -> 3/5.

Madonna blends country and pop well on some of the tracks. Others are standard Madonna pop.
After three opening cuts – which are silly and synthetic, completely disposable club music – there is much to like here. Her voice is/was still in good shape at this point but one woulda like more room for the beats/beds to live and breathe. Perhaps the production was a big deal. The stop-start effect on "Don't Tell Me" is silly. This song also sounds like she's channeling Sublime -- how the mighty have fallen. And poor Joe Henry; his version of this cut -- his own -- is about 1,000 times cooler, though hopefully the royalties from his sister-in-law have cheered him up. The more organic the songs – that is the least plastic and clubby – the better (see "I Deserve It, ' "Gone"). One assumes "Nobody's Perfect" was a relatively early adoption of Autotune (again, who cares?) which doesn't sound any better today and the weird effects (a theremin with sinus congestion?). Best moment of the whole record is the vibe/bed toward the beginning of "What It Feels" but rest of song doesn't remotely do it justice (so maybe h/t to producer on that one). Overall, it's hard to resist the conclusion that this is a trend-chasing exercise by a celebrity desperate to stay relevant. But at least's polished, well-made and often pleasurable.

It's not her best, and in some ways a bit indulgent. Her French is worse than mine. We didn't need to spend three minutes on Paradise (which should be paradis).
The first few tracks and interesting with a curious electronic vibe, but I like the later tracks that a little bit more mellow and moody. It definitely feels like a mature pop record, though there is nothing catchy enough to warrant repeat listens.
The Queen of Pop shows she’s quite comfortable on the throne, even if her status was starting to slip by the turn of the millennium. The lyrics are a bit clunky, but the beats remain danceable and her confidence shines through. (Side note: Don’t Tell Me was cowritten by Madonna’s brother-in-law Joe Henry, who has a highly underrated music career of his own—including his own take on Don’t Tell Me on his 2001 album Scar, though there it’s called Stop. Extremely recommended!)

Second half of the album improves a lot. Was not expecting this from Madonna
Had a few good laughs listening to this. It's late-era Madonna, the older pop star trying to keep up with the youngin's. In the era of Britney Spears and whoever else, Madonna puts out this. The production ranges from really cool and interesting to just silly, and that's sort of the album as a whole. I skipped a few songs on here, which is never a good sign, but I also found myself enjoying even more. And "Don't Tell Me" is one I've certainly heard before. I can't really give this more than three stars in good faith because it's goofy and has skips, but I'm not as mad at the inclusion that I worried I would be. Thankfully it's not the only Madonna on the list. Favorite tracks: Music (funny), I Deserve It, Don't Tell Me, Paradise (Not For Me), Gone. Album art: The cherry on top, and what had me worried most of all. The album is called "Music," which is dumb enough on its own, but it's a picture of rancher Madonna? This isn't even a country album, I can only remember one song that arguably veers into country-ish instrumentals, why's she doing all this? I hope she was having a laugh here because I certainly am. 3/5

What is this album doing in this list?! "Madonna" and "Like A Virgin" are 5 star. "True Blue" is 4.5 and "Like a Prayer" is 4 star. "Frozen" is 4 star, just like "Confessions on a Dance Floor". All other Madonna albums are 3 star at most. Out of these remaining albums, Music is one of the best. It is perhaps a bit more consistent than Frozen, but Frozen contains four absolute 5-star singles, and Music contains none: a couple 4 star, a couple 2 star, rest is 3 star. my vote in 2000: 6/10 my vote in 2024: 6/10
Not a bad album, but why pick this one for the 1001 list?
Oof - first play through I was leaning towards a 2, but maybe I was just in a mood that day - the second play through it isn't striking me as being quite as objectionable. It definitely feels like Madonna is trying to play catch up with Björk or something, right? A couple of the tracks feel like sub standard Daft Punk or Air knock offs. Fave tracks - "Gone" maybe? "Don't Tell Me" is the least objectionable of the singles...

Madonna has been making danceable hits for 40 years. “Music” and “Don’t Tell Me” took me straight back to middle school—Probably haven’t heard those songs for 20 years. Loved the club/house tracks on this album but everything else wasn’t too compelling. Three stars.

Ah the autotune era. Has this always been Madonna's thing? Interesting to hear more and feel/experience Madonna's branding of herself as an innocent, sexy girl. 'Music' is a great song, the rest of the album wasn't much for me.

Some great moments in there
Good album, Madonna’s foray into pop electronica is an enjoyable listen. 3/5 mainly only because as much as I enjoyed it, I won’t listen to it regularly.
Better-than-respectable, and the experimentation toes a brave line, Don't Tell Me sublimating the genuinely annoying. However, the album's a seriously mixed bag, and the concept never quite comes together but always slightly binds.

This album is kind of like the opposite of Transformer for me. I think Madonna is a pretty good singer. Don't get me wrong, I think Lou Reed's singing could grow on me with future listens to other Lou Reed albums as well as the Velvet Underground albums, but I wasn't a big fan of his singing. What I'm trying to say is that while I think the singing was the worst part of Transformer, I think the best part of Madonna's "Music" is her singing. Nothing else really stuck out to me that much. I didn't like the sound on a lot of the songs. I just don't think that the contrast between the techno sound and the almost folk-like sound work well together. Some of the songs dragged on for me. Did "Paradise (Not for Me)" really need to be 6 minutes? Some of the songs were good though. I think the closer, Gone, is the best song in the album. The editing just isn't my thing a lot of the time. Overall, I can see why others might like it a bit and I understand why this album is on here, but this just isn't my thing at all. low 3/5.

Madonna is catchy as always. Most of it is a bit too cheesy for my taste, but it’s still really good! My favorite of the album is Nobody’s Perfect - it sounds like a modern day down tempo electronic banger! Includes legendary song American Pie as the outro.

I was prepared for this to be an utter trainwreck. But it wasn't, some of it was quite, ahem, 'musical.' However the less said about the horror of the American Pie cover, the better.

This was good but not great, some good songs but not the absolute consistency of a great pop album.
Hmm. On a re-listen this feels like a bit of a curate's egg, betrayed by three different producers. Three stellar tracks in Music, What It Feels Like and closer Gone. But bits of it feel like out-takes from Ray of Light, bits of it feel like a not quite fully achieved French filter house album, and bits of it are a bit duff. Then of course one of the worst covers of all time. So can't give it more than three stars.

There is a fitting pop superstar arrogance to just naming a release "Music". Madonna signing about what music does to the "bourgeoisie" is the icing on the cake. Obviously with the sort of team behind something like this, there are catchy pop earworms aplenty. I think this list has leaned too heavily into this artist's later catalog; its all pretty forgettable.
This is my least favorite Madonna album, but I do love Impressive Instant. The rest sounds dated & bland compared to her other work. It's honestly disappointing to see this one & not Confessions on a Dance Floor - that one has an ABBA sample for christ's sake! I will always love/hate Madonna, and she'll always be The Queen of Pop, but this album is a general dud.

Good but also has some weak moments. What It Feels Like For A Girl is my favourite.
This album incorporates disco, trance, electro-pop, and country/folk elements. Though the use of these elements is not new, the fact that they’re all present in a pop album by a blockbuster artist is really fascinating. The album does sound really dated due to the effects it uses and its production style, but I did really enjoy it as it gave me a new perspective of an artist who is known for her earlier groundbreaking pop work. Madonna is clearly interested in musical growth and even if it doesn’t always land, I appreciate her trying to expand her horizons.

I vaguely recall when this album came out, and it was being heralded as a marked turn in Madonna's career. Listening some 22 years later, it doesn't really have much sense of being groundbreaking, indeed some of the content seems quite dated (see 'Feels Like For A Girl'). Still, there are a few decent tracks, including the titular 'Music' which I recall featured none other than Ali G in the accompanying video

Good follow up to Ray of Light with some harder house and some indie songs. Awful version of American Pie with unnecessary nursery music.
Back in the day my co-judge and I danced to the title track at Club Med, where it was on high rotation. Madonna made a smart move two years earlier, by teaming up with William Orbit for a fresh club sound and here she adds another producer to the mix with good results, though outside of "Music" the up-tempo tracks aren't as strong. Not often you'll find a multi platinum pop album with such adventurous (for its time) production. As far as transformations go, Madonna's not in the same school as David Bowie or Miles Davis but she's up there. In this version I find the Cowboy image is a bit confusing, considering the overall sound.

A real mixed bag with high highs and low lows. Has aged suprisingly well for the most part, considering that its 25 years old at the time of these lines. In all the lows (nobody's perfect) drag the thing too much down for 4 stars that the highs (Don't tell me; What it feels like for a girl) would deserve.

So, Madonna got together with William orbit and a few other late 90s producers and made an album where she's a cowgirl singing over house beats. OK. I mean, there's part of this I like in theory, but I just don't think Madonna can pretend to be the source of electronic underground, especially in a Stetson.

Ah a 2000’s Madonna album. I didn’t need to listen to this, I heard the title track enough on Much Music when I was 16 and well it could have stayed there. What a terrible song, what a terrible album. I will admit that Don’t Tell Me kinda scratched an itch of mine, I think the song kinda sucks but I was into it. To pile on a bit more, I think Madonna tried to tag in late on the “Girl Power” movement with her lazy contribution of “What it Feels Like to be a Girl” and to pile on the even further, this album art is dumb. 2 stars
Another record that immediately takes me back to watching TRL when I got home from middle school in 98-00. It feels like the singles from "Ray Of Light" just ended and then "Music" showed right up to hold Madonna's place on the countdown. I wasn't prepared for some of the aggressive autotune on this album. I know that was kinda in vogue (see what I did there?) at the time, but this feels a lot more garish than I like to remember it. What a time. I'm also not convinced this one NEEDS a spot on the list... It kinda feels like 1.) Madonna has been so broadly influential that Mr. Dimery felt that she should have several records on the list, even if they aren't specifically important on their own. 2.) There was some recency bias when the original list was made that compelled him (and/or the critics who helped him) to favor "Ray Of Light" and "Music". I'm not convinced they're her best, but I've also not listened through her whole discography.
I know this album was sort of meaningful in the overall Madonna catalog in that it was a reinvention and produced a few bit hits. But overall, it's sort of meh and fairly forgettable and another example of an album deep in an artist's catalog that probably could have been skipped to make room for something else that is not represented.

Hey Mr Dinnery, don’t play this album for me! Why this bog standard pop music made it to the list I’ve no idea (if it wasn’t by Madonna it surely wouldn’t be in contention). And to cap it off, a horrific cover of American Pie- you’ll wish the music died alright.
Madonna has some great songs, but unfortunately none of them were on this album. It wasn’t terrible, just pretty dull, with rather grating glitchy electronic production and vocoded/autotuned vocals, and very poor lyrics (case in point: ‘I want to singy, singy, singy, like a bird on a wingy, wingy, wingy’). Along with ‘Amazing’, the catchy title track was one of the stronger songs, although the claim on Wikipedia that it has ‘political implications’ because she uses the word ‘bourgeoisie’ genuinely made me laugh out loud. Mostly fine, but not one I’ll seek out again, hence a high 2 stars.
Banging. Sonically, this comes across as an underground album - urgent, mysterious. Good tunes, too But it runs out of steam during side 1. If it was all as good as the first 3 tracks it would be a four star LP. But, no. 2 stars

Toen dit album uitkwam dacht ik eigenlijk al dat niemand Madonna meer echt serieus nam. Net als dat opgezette lijk van Cher met d'r hit 'Believe'. Blijkbaar hoort dit album toch thuis in een snoblijst. We doen het er maar mee. De openingstrack ken ik en vind ik daarom nog wel aardig, maar daarna begint voor mij eigenlijk het grote uitzitten. Ik vind dit redelijk ruk verder, ik kan er niks mee, heb er geen zin in. Daar staat tegenover dat het wel een prima productie is natuurlijk, Madonna heeft genoeg centen om dat allemaal netjes af te kopen. De nummers op dit album interesseren me gewoon echt helemaal niet. Ik heb hier nog het album 'Fantastic' van Toy-Box liggen, die bevindt zich een beetje in het zelfde straatje met dezelfde geluidseffecten en die zet ik 10 keer liever aan. 'Don't tell me' halverwege het album is ook nog wel aardig, die kennen we uiteraard ook. En aan het einde heb je nog wat herkenbaarheid met die potsierlijke 'American Pie' cover. Twee sterren.

I’m not a massive Madonna fan, but I can appreciate that Ray of Light was a good album that basically reinvented her to a younger audience. This sadly, isn’t a very good album and has pretences of having country vibes, simply by wearing clothing in the videos and album cover like it’s a western movie and having a few guitars. It was given more airtime than it deserved on release. I’d argue that Confessions on a Dancefloor has more reasons to be on here that this album.
You're lucky to get this '2' rating Madonna...on the strength of Music and Don't Tell Me. I guess it's hard to be edgy when you are in your 40s.
The opening song "Music" recaptured some of Madona's pop queen status reflecting a sound of the times. However, many songs after felt liked an exploration of experimental sounds missing their mark. Instead of having a pulse on the 2000s, it flatlined.

What a wet fart. I remember when it came out “Music” was everywhere. I have a soft spot for that one. It’s fun and it’s got a beat, plus she’s got that Bourgeoise line… but other than that, this has NOT aged well. Sounds like garbage and the songs are forgettable to a one.

There was a song or two when the album came out that gave me a I guess Madonna still has it nostalgia vibe. However I quickly forgot about it and 25 years later listening to it did not rekindle that feeling. Maybe for a die-hard Madonna fan this would be an OK album but no idea how it made the top 1000.
