Wild that was recorded in 1982. Always thought this was from the early 90s. Such a unique sound between the vocals, the active bass, and random instrumentation.
4.25
This is class - the bass is sick
Solid
Yeah liked this one
Got this on the eclipse of 24 so that was pretty cool. Also fun punk album as well.
Quirky. Original when it came out. Unique forty years later. Great songs. A bit one-note. But always worth a listen.
3.6 - this was not I expected. I’d only heard blister in the sun and good feeling which are great. But the rest of the album was a lot more raw and heavier than I was expecting. Didn’t hate it though
Nice and original (ish). One of few albums where I think the bad vocals compliment nicely and work. I will not hold it against him then.
This is just so freaking charming and well done. Amazing what a guitar can do.
Fun, a little edgy, and makes you feel like you are listening to them at a house party.
The last thing I expected from this album was a song I actually recognized. But I’m confident that I’ve heard Blister in the Sun somewhere before. Not sure where exactly though. I was genuinely surprised by how delightful and charming this album sounds. I have zero experience with folk punk. But it’s honestly a really intriguing idea. Taking all of the traditional aspects of punk music away, and essentially throwing out a lot of the intensity those things they create, creates a genre that is weirdly satisfying to listen to. Plus, it helps that the band is far more skilled than I expected them to be. This album sounds very much like a product of its time, right between the end of the 70s and the beginning of the 80s. But some of these songs wouldn’t sound out of place on a mid-2000s record. I think the thing that makes this album so enjoyable is just its willingness to bring weird. It isn’t afraid to be out there and try interesting ideas. This is such an unconventional sound, and I am naturally drawn to that. Not necessarily an album I would recommend to the average person, but more someone who can appreciate something more unconventional. Rating: 7/10
Blister in the Sun was everywhere in my youth, but I'm not familiar with this album. It is a pretty good song.. A fun rock and roll album. An interesting progression of a Buddy Holly like sound. The vocals are played like an instrument and keep things interesting, tho sometimes a bit juvenile. Nice bass playing. Sounded good on the car stereo.
The overall sound in this is pretty timeless and unique for its era. You could drop some of these songs into the 90s/2000s and they wouldn't feel out of place. Like I thought "Blister in the Sun" was an early 2000s indie/alt rock song for a while after first being exposed to it. This feels more alternative than punk to be honest, but I guess the acoustic-like sound throughout plays a big part in why I feel that.
Blister in The Sun is one of those songs that I like but I could go the rest of my life without hearing again. That said there's a lot of other really cool songs on here. I had no idea this album came out when I did. I assumed early to mid 90's. I'll definitely come back to this one again.
Raw sound, fast paced and fun
I haven't listened yet. Still working through the previous album. I'm not completely unfamiliar with three Femmes and I'm in general a HUGE fan of self titled albums. I'm excited to see if this fits among the ranks of The Doors, Bad Company, and Mt. Joy or if it's more of an Aerosmith with only the one memorable track.
Victim of whole stars. Given the timing, impact and sound, this is a unique representation of an enduring work. For this to be ‘82 is insane in its own right but given the staying power it’s easily 4.5/5. Giving 4.
I have never heard about them before, and I'm always amazed by how much good stuff has been around since the 80s, with no sign for me. This list is centered around the '70s and '80s albums, but apparently, all bands around that time were much ahead of their time, like the case of Violent Femmes. Sadly, they decrease a bit at the end of the album with some slow songs, which makes me rate them with a 4, but I'll always love to listen to all this proto/pos/folk-punk music.
Pretty good probably could see myself listening to this again some day
It was not what I was expecting from the cover, but it was a pleasant surprise. It's not really a big fave, but nothing heinous either. I liked the music a lot more than I liked the lyrics.
I really want enjoyed that. Lots of brilliant riffs and low fi crunchiness
1. Classic. Nothing to add. 2. Better than Blister in the Sun. Better lyrics, more varied instrumentation. 3. I remember hating this song when I was younger listening to this album. I don't like it but it's not as bad as I remember. It's a bit like the reggae songs on Bad Brains' self-titled. 4. The best song on the album musically. Lyrics are meh, but still slaps. 5. The "hurry" part sucks, HARD. Rest is fine if forgettable. 6. Another of the folk-punk songs. Hook's great, still remember it after 4 years. 7. By the numbers, but catchy as hell. 8. Probably the best, thickest bassline on the album. Fun song. 9. plinplinplinplinplinplinplinplinplinplinplinplinplinplinplinplinplinplin 10. Sleep-inducing in a good way. Nice piano and violin. Overall album rating: 8/10
I had placed this one later than 1983, so it gets an extra star.
I enjoyed this one. Punk feeling with pop sensibility is my jam. I had heard many of the songs of course but I don't think I had ever listened to the whole album. I would give it a 3.75, so I'm rounding up to four. Memorable, my type of music, and will listen to it again.
Interesting album. I hadn't heard many of these songs by the group, but I enjoyed i.
Prýðisalbúm með góðri hljómsveit. Þetta varð smá endurtekningagjarnt á köflum en það var samt ekki eitthvað sem böggaði mig og mig langar að hlusta á þessa plötu aftur og líka spá betur í textunum þannig að þessi fer aftur í hlustun við tækifæri. Gott stöff.
Punk funny lyrics, musically interesting . I didn't know them..yay
classic for a reason
Had the irresistible urge to watch Grosse Pointe Blank this weekend
Very fun album Standout songs: Add it up Promise Gone daddy gone
A great album that holds up remarkably well decades later.
Have not heard this album in like 7-8 years! Kiss Off had me dancing at my desk and kicked off a little introspection on how far I've come since I first got into this album. Living in Milwaukee wasn't on my mind, I was smoking heavily, and was just getting into playing the bass more seriously.
Old school nice and catchy
It's ok?
Listened to this album on a kick a few weeks ago. Love most everything about it. The writing and production on this make it feel timeless to me. An album where the standups and the hits align: Blister In the Sun, Kiss Off, Add it Up, Gone Daddy Gone, Gimme The Car. All great. Love the acoustic punk vibe and bass-work throughout. Solid 4 / 5 for me.
Sounds way ahead of its time
The Levellers are my one and only Folk Punk band, but this is pretty damn good. I've lost count of the number of time I danced to Blister in the Sun in The Limit back in the early 80s.
was nice this one, slightly challenging. The acoustic bass is pretty special, just sounds like he's improvising all the way through. Prolly not gonna listen to it again anytime soon but giving it a 4 for the energy
These guys rock! Huge energy in the songs, can imagine it was even better live. And the softer songs work great too, the closer is perfect! Standout tracks: Blister In The Sun, Kiss Off, Add It Up, Prove My Love, Promise, To The Kill, Gone Daddy Gone, Good Feeling 8,5 out of 10 These guys can rock! Ever wonder what a miz between underground new york punk scene, 50's rockabily and folk rock would sound like? Well this album sound exaclty like that, a folk-punk rock album, inspired by early alternative rock like the velvet underground, the CBGB scenes (Television, The heartbreakers, Richard Hell and the Talking Heads.) and some traditional folk and early rock n roll artists like Hank Williams, Gene Vincent or Woody Guthrie. The result give a strange but somehow good mix, a punk album but accoustic. The main song is Blister in the sun by far the best one, follow by Gone Daddy Gone and Kiss off. Blister in the Sun as some interesting lyrics apparantly refer to heroin use, addiction in general or masturbation, or just a girl, or to be in love. The way Gordon Gano sing the song is also special at some point he literaly whisper the lyrics and the beat is so cool. Gone Daddy Gone as a kinda funny instrumental part with a xylophone intro a very orignal choice of music but yet very good. Kiss Off really make me think of the Velvet Underground, like in the voice, the instrumental and the way they sing the verses (like there she goes again or White light/White heat). Add it Up, prouve my love, promise and To the Kill are other very good songs that really add to this strange but good reccord. Anyway this abum is an early exemple of how the rock sc ene will transform 10 years later, an they were pretty influencial for those band that would follow in the alt rock path.
very distinct vocal sound over alternative rock that feels like it was influential in the creation of They Might Be Giants. Somewhat dark and humorous, the album is classified as Folk-Punk and you see the angsty lyricism over relatively stripped back punk influences.
# Playlist track - Gone Daddy Gone # Notes - After "Blister in the Sun" (which I already knew) I had a WTF look in my face the entire album. - Did those guys do an acoustic punk album? - Whaaaat, Gone Daddy Gone is a cover? - Super fun listen!
There isn’t a song here that I’d say is bad. Plenty of bangers across the board. First half is a strange case, as a few songs are like acoustic punk, which is kinda fun. The electric guitar tracks are great also. I didn’t expect that xylophone near the end as well, lol. This one was fun! Pretty good.
Rating: 8.5/10 Great folk rock album. Great instrumentally and vocally, many catchy melodies and interesting lyrics. The singer has a quirky voice that works very well with the instruments, has some Velvet Underground influence and it seems like the Pixies may have been inspired by these guys which is a huge positive for me. The more upbeat songs were the highlights, some of the slower ones did not resonate with me as much. Favorite songs: Blister In The Sun, Kiss Off, Please Do Not Go, Add It Up, To The Kill, Gone Daddy Gone, Good Feeling. Least favorite song: Confessions.
Enjoyed the sound, need to get used to some of the style
Have always dug the Violent Femmes! Familiar with their five most famous tunes here, but had never listened to the whole album. Surprised that some of the deeper tracks lagged a bit, so that will drop the rating down to a 4/5 but look, nobody does what the Femmes do. They are truly original and I have so much respect for this band!
3.5-4 on my scale. Classic album from my early college days. Acoustic punk is a great way to describe them. Sadly, when I saw them in the 90’s, they were playing folk festivals.
Favourite tracks: blister in the sun; gone daddy gone
another album that i've been meaning to check out for a while. so glad i did. it's great and full of character.
Blister In The Sun is obvi classic. I really like this. Didn't realize this was from the 80s, I thought it was early 2000s. Boppy acoustic music.
Tää oli kiva! Sopivassa suhteessa punk, ja sopivassa naiivi! Jatkoon! 4/5
Rämisevää ja vimmaista, tykkäsin kyllä levystä vaikka incel-biisin lyriikat kuulostaa nykypäivänä vähän erilaisilta kuin ennen.
Great stuff
that's a catchy blister song confessional strumming bits of rage confetti teenage angst is this where greenday came from? never realized how much xylophone is present on gone daddy gone.
Great album. Very close to a 5, but just short.
I remember when this album emerged into the zeitgeist of my high school around 1984. We felt so naughty singing along to "Add It Up" and "Blister In The Sun" out of our parents' earshot. I always have appreciated the raw angst of the album, but Gordon Gano's voice was too much to endure for an entire album. Now so many years later, I don't find it as abrasive as I once did, and I hear some Gun Club hellbilly noise and junky looseness and even some Jonathan Richman outsider individuality that eluded me the first time around. (TBH, part of my resistance to them was their popularity with peers.) Refreshing to rehear the Femmes' debut anew. I suppose they were the prophets of punk and underground my young ears actually needed. The Femmes will unlikely be my new old favorite band, but now I can appreciate them more than I have for the last 35 years.
Lack of polish adds charm and character. This is the exact kind of music I would have hated ten years ago. Glad I'm over that.
Very Enjoyable, WISCONSIN!
Friendly album, surprised by the fact it’s alternative/punky with just acoustic instruments 👌🏼

Absolutely dripping with angst and desperation, in a fun way.
Can be listened to again and again, sounds fresh and cheeky
"Blister in the Sun"!!! I love that song. Damn, the instrumentals are really complicated. Didn't notice that before. This was apparently released in 1983, which is wild to me because the early parts of this album sounds like one of those bands in the 1990s that would make really silly, ironic hits and disappear. It's the lyrics, I think. Very conversational and laced in irony in a way that most bands at the time wouldn't dare to do. It's closest similarity would probably be the Smiths, but this sounds more kitschy, thus the comparison to the one-hit wonders of the 1990s.
Good album i have a greatest hit version on CD however I like this album Better Than I Do The Greatest Hits version weird
fun/ angst / would listen again, liked some more than others should start new star system. 5 amazzing all of it / listening all again 4 really like some 3 liked it 2 didn’t like 1 just nope
Nostalgic
Nice!
Blister on the sun is the best song on this album. Good baselines
Breddy good album
Pretty solid could definitely hear where some bands took from them.
Sometimes you have to be in the mood for an album. I put this on this morning on the way to work and just wasn't feeling it at all. On the way back, I'm all for it. I knew Blister in the Sun but not much more apart from they were on Sabrina the Teenage Witch for some reason? Soundwise, the band's dad is Jonathan Richman and their their grandparents the Velvet Underground. This is the end of my rather disjointed review done on the train home.
This was way better than expected. First of all, I often say, overplayed songs are overplayed for a reason, this is the exception, Blister in the sun might be my least favorite song on the love. I love everything else. Very bass driven. 8.8/10
I'll check it later
regular3/4
Was unusual and fun
I can't listen to this album without a huge sense of nostalgia and memories of high school, school breaks in Alabama, heartbreak and all the emotions you feel when you're that age. I know every song in my bones.
Few really cool tracks and the blend of acoustic punk is something I didn’t expect to love as much as I have.
I listen tooo the album nowwww I’m going clap clapp
Favorite of my wife. Love the first song
Excellent, almost a five.
Great little album, lots of recognisable songs that seem to have had a lot of influence on subsequent artists
Old school alt rock Blister in the sun Activating
Really enjoyed this had heard some of it before but never followed it up. Will have a look at their back catalogue now.
Rigtig cool! Vidste ikke rigtigt hvad jeg skulle forvente. Synes næsten største overraskelse var at det lød som en mandlig sanger
Never listened to this whole album. Enjoyed it.
I never listened to this whole album but know a bunch of the songs. It's a good one.
Fun! Prove my Love is straight up pop, per the liner notes. It sounds a whole lot like The Beatles to me.
Good but not great
Cool influential indie punk. Sounds like it could of dropped today. Really impressed knowing that this came out in 83. Really happy to know these guys aren't just the one hit wonders. A bit chaotic but a ton of energy.
Bärenstark. Klingt sehr ursprünglich. Mit Kraft und Spass an der Musik.
This is a really good album. I knew Blister in the Sun, Kiss off, Add it Up. Why did I not listen to more of this album before now? I know Gone Daddy Gone from a remake that was on the Forza 2 soundtrack. It's burned into my brain. Such a distinctive tone provided by the rhythm section on this record. The upright bass and a very driving snare tone. Jangley, sometimes discordant guitar. Lots of angst and alienation and loneliness expressed in the lyrics. Just a good record all the way through.
8/10
Some really great songs with a couple of songs I still can't seem to enjoy. I guess that's what happens when your band has a love of the discordant
I thought these were one hit wonders from the 90’s Turns out this is a fairly fantastic album of acoustic punk songs from the 80’s
Nice punk rock.
funky funny rock!
DK - Couldn’t believe I loved a folk punk album so much, I was so pleasantly surprised by the tracks on this album. I think my favourite for sure had to be confessions but I honestly loved 8/12 songs on this album so that might change with time. The lead singer absolutely killed it with their vocal performance and the way the album tackles themes of loneliness and love was pretty cool, it doesn’t surprise me the write was 18 at the time of writing the songs as it seemed the album came through the lens of a teenager. Probably the best album I’ve reviewed so far. I saw a review saying that if someone put a gun to my head and asked what decade this was made, I’d say the 90’s and end up being shot. Couldn’t agree more, sounds so ahead of their time. The only thing I can detract from this album is sometimes the lyrics go too over the top or too childish, and I think that takes away from a more focused narrative. Rating 3.5/5 // Aaron - So. Much. Fun. From Beginning to end this project is so enjoyable. The songwriting throughout is really strong, creating a pretty unique sound especially for this era. I loved the strings. First album of this challenge that has made me want to put it on repeat. Kiss Off, Add it Up, and Good Feeling were my favourites. 4/5
4/10, 40%
Solid album
A couple of instantly identifiable singles plus a number of other songs worth listening to. I don't remember listening to this album when I was in college, but probably because of the preferences of the friends I hung out with.
feels like you’re a high schooler skipping school having a Ferris Buelers type day. Some interesting lyrics but really a coming of age album. “Time goes by, I can feel myself growing old. Burning inside, it's making this boy turn out cold” 8/10
So degen, but still very solid musically. I had a lot of fun with this one
Funny ass degen album but music is still good. Like how crazy the strings sound. Especially on kiss off when the singer says some stupid shit and then the bassist proceeds to shred. Best: add it up, blister in the sun, kiss off, prove my love
Hmm I've heard better
Heard it a couple times before this but managed to give it another couple listens today. You wouldn't believe this album came out in 1983, it sounds so 90s. Some great songwriting and desperate vocal performances all over it. 'Gone Daddy Gone' with it's xylophone solo is a real highlight.
This album is so entertaining. I couldn’t exactly pin down the style of music but it was very good.
Quirky
First time listening to this band.. let's go! Teenage angst and inceldom have never been this catchy, raw and honest. The contrast of the DIY vibe of the recording, the untrained vocals and the seriously impressive pop sensibilities, and groovy bass and guitar lines are both disorienting and mesmerizing at the same time. Best songs: Blister in the Sun, Add it Up, Gone Daddy Gone, Good Feeling is a great closer too. 4 prom rejections out of 5
much violin in here I never noticed, solid beginning to END Real Good
an all time classic for me darkly manic bangers for the ages
incel swag 😎
Album variegato, strumentazione essenziale ma fantasiosa, raggiunge dei sorprendenti picchi di creatività, non noioso. Unico vero difetto l'utilizzo di certi topoi musicali a volta banali
Pretty classic casual music, light and funky.
Pretty good used to listen to this at one time
Jazz/punk with bad vocal talent has no right working as good as this album. First time hearing this album and I’m kind of amazed at how much I enjoyed it.
Now I know where this sound comes from! And yeah it gets progressively more distorted
I like it
Track #1, RTÉ.
A classic, fun, dance around my kitchen album. Would have loved to have been able to see this performed live when it first came out.
Good, better than expected
Love this album. Blister in the Sun, Kiss Off, and Gone Daddy Gone will always some of my favorite songs.
Liked it!~
I like
To some extent, a lot of the appeal here is the novelty of what is essentially acoustic punk, which feels like it is more valuable as an historical influence than its own listen. Since the stripped down instrumentation and Reed-y vocals relies very heavily on pop sensibility to be welcome in your ears, the peaks are high but the valleys are a little forgettable. Standouts: Blister in the Sun is obviously a perfect pop song, but Add It Up is the coolest track on here, though it's may just be nostalgic for me as a feature on the Tony Hawk Underground 2 soundtrack. Sleeper: Gone Daddy Gone shows just how far a little extra instrumentation can go.
stripped down and minimal, raw vocals, awesome bass
Lovely lo-fi
I really liked this album. I'd previously heard Blister in the Sun, and Add it Up. This album could be described as acoustic punk, if that's a genre. It has a very raw garage band sound. It's fun to listen too. I was surprised it was released in 1983 because it sounds like early to mid 90s grunge/indy music. Ahead of its time. Very good album.
Upbeat, fun all the way through
A great party album that reminds me of college.
I was fully prepared to not like this as they wang on about the band all the time in The Time Traveller's Wife, and goodness I hated that book. But would listen again
Man, this takes me right back to college, when I first listened to this whole album.
Growing up in the early 90s with almost this entire album on regular alternative radio rotation, I had always thought that the Violent Femmes had had some kind of revival where this album was rediscovered. Now I'm wondering if it just never left the rotation and I "discovered" them in 92 or 93 because that's when I started to listen to alternative radio. I remember seeing these guys live around 95 or 96. Great great album that deserved to be played over and over.
Acustic punk
Absolute classic that was insanely ahead of its time, love this album
Decent punk-ish album with a couple of good songs. Not a big fan of the singing in it, but musically it's solid
A pretty fun listen. I'd say it was a 5 star experience, but I will give it 4 stars because I'm not sure how much replay value it has for me. I'm not much of a punk rocker so I don't think I will find myself wanting to go back to it. Maybe one day if I'm playing a Tony Hawk game and the soundtrack isn't cutting it for me I will throw it on mute and play this album. Song going on my "1001 Songs" Playlist: Blister in the Sun Other Songs Going On My "1001 Albums Savelist" Playlist: Add it Up, To the Kill, Gone Daddy Gone
It's an alright Album. Wasn't grooving to it but it did sound solid. It might be one of those I have to re-listen to over time to fully appreciate. "Blister in the Sun" is always a banger.
C’mon dadddd gimme the car tonight
"punk folk" is a super weird genre on paper but it works j fine in this - add it up is so good
Textured, twangy, twitchy teenage tunes. Very fun and easy to absorb. I especially love how ‘bouncy’ and alive the instruments feel and the perfectly-imperfect vocals.
I’d heard Blister in the Sun, Add It Up, and Gone Daddy Gone. Great album all the way through. Consistent sound throughout.
4.5 stars. Strange but compelling early alternative rock -ish album. The acoustic basslines drive this record and make up for a. Impressive songwriting for an 18 year old high school kid, even if his vocals are a bit high and awkward. Standouts are memorable "Blister In The Sun" and "Gone Daddy Gone".
This album brings me so much joy. Impossible not to wiggle and sing along. The wiggliest album yet.
Really digging these groovy kids and their fresh new sound. Hope the singer manages to get some therapy, mind.
I greatly enjoyed this album
4.5
бодренько, хорошо, цепляет
So good! So ahead of its time. So fun.
Good tunes
Didn’t expect Acoustic guitars and Punk to go together so well Favourite tracks: Blister In The Sun, Add It Up, To The Kill, Gone Daddy Gone
The first time I ever heard of the Violent Femmes was on Sabrina The Teenage Witch. I remember as a child watching it and thinking about how they must have said the band name about 100 times in that episode. Despite this, I thought for a good while after that they were called “Vile FM”. Songs I already knew: Blister In The Sun, Please Do Not Go Favourites: Blister In The Sun, Good Feeling This was an interesting listen. The reason being that it has a punk attitude, but there is hardly any distorted guitar for the whole album. For the most part, it feels like an unplugged album until towards the end where some slight distortion comes in and a few orchestral elements. It is catchy from front to back, with pleasant vocals (including gang vocals). I waited too long to give Vile FM a real good try.
Definitely feels like it could have been made in the last decade. Very catchy songs. 7.8+
Solid album. You can definitely hear how this influenced a lot of late 80's early 90's alternative. Lo-fi at its best.
Overall enjoyed the album! Blister in the Sun, Kiss Off, Please Do Not Go all great tracks!
Alotta fun, easy to get into. It's not particularly special, but if it isn't just very enjoyable, I dunno what it is. 3.5/5 Fav Track: Confessions
Ramshackle angsty whining of the highest order. Content and delivery are perfectly in line, and while the lyricism could become cloying, its ludicrously self involved to the point where I can't take it too seriously. That pairs well with the incredibly catchy hooks and spare, garagey production. I'd heard the hits but I was really having a great time with this one and will be coming back for more. Four and a half. Fave track: Good Feeling
Literally acoustic punk
Great start, but kinda dies down at the end.
Today's record was a hell of a surprise, given the fact that I'd never listened to Violent Femmes stuff until today. From what I've read, they are classed as folk punk, which is exactly what this is. I was struggling to give it a genre, but it is acoustic with a driving bassline on most songs. I never thought I'd say these words, but the xylophone solo in Gone Daddy Gone is awesome! I thought that the band name sounded familiar when I started listening to the album this morning, and learned that Violent Femmes was featured in the song Gotta Get to Peekskill off of the Dropkick Murphy's new album Okemah Rising. I also learned that Blister in the Sun was used in a Wendy's commercial in 2007. The band couldn't agree on how best to set up the usage/royalties, and it ended up becoming a huge lawsuit, and resulted in the breaking up of the band until 2013. Overall, another fantastic "found band and album". From never having heard of them, to a fan of their stuff, this is what this generator is all about. Thoroughly enjoyed today's album! Favourite songs: Gone Daddy Gone, Blister in the Sun, Ugly, Good Feeling, Prove My Love, Add It Up, Please Do Not Go Least favourite songs: Gimme the Car 4/5
Pretty good (acoustic punk?) record. Not entirely memorable for me but I liked all the songs.Only one true banger for me and that’s the first song but the rest was still pretty good.Good not truly great.
Doesn't have a particular mood or theme, but this is 10 imaginative, funny songs that do plenty to stand outside the typical formula for pop.
I was really uncertain about giving this a 4 because it’s very close to 3 stars, but I did anyways. This is my first listen, although I already knew some songs, and I had high expectations. I didn’t really find any new songs that I liked, but I would probably like it more if I re-listened and I already liked 2 songs.
A lot more fun than I was expecting. Angsty, but more of a pop to it and less drab.
Very good!
Acoustic fugazi Best songs: Add it up, to the kill, blisters in the sun
Feels very ahead of its time, you could have told me this was released in the mid '90s and I'd have believed you. You'd have to call it "interesting" - as backhanded as that sounds - aside from a couple of songs ("Blister in the Sun" probably being the most straightforward one) I wouldn't have it in regular rotation for casual listening, but still found something to like in almost every song.
i only knew blister in the dun ofc but the whole album is nice
They made listening to post-punk a bearable activity. The songs felt unique, energetic, and fun. They have a sound that makes them stand out and I’ll always enjoy listening to any if these songs. 4/5
Super punky, lot of fun this album. Garage elements too
Dette er utvilsomt "bråkete". Litt slitsom sanger og instrumentering, men jeg viber med det. Høy allsangfaktor! Høydepunktet er utvilsomt Blister in the sun, men ogaå Gone Daddy Gone er en banger.
For obvious reasons, I always assumed Violent Femmes were a feminist hardcore punk band and never realised they were the guys who did "Go Wild" from the Grosse Pointe Blank soundtrack. Now I know! The album is pretty good too, I like their more laid-back and fun take on punk.
Really quite good. I’m undecided between 4 and 5 for this. I suspect I’ll come down on a 4…
Violent Femmes walked so the Front Bottoms could run.
Love it for the most part. Can be a bit one dimensional but still is great, original content.
This doesnt sound anything like any other early 80s album, even other alternative artists, what a treat. Everyone knows the first track but I had never listened to the rest. It really broke the mold. Would you call this folk-punk? I really liked that they went for some harmonies on Prove My Love and Gone Daddy Gone (the usage of the marimba was pretty funny).
Never listened to this full album before. You can hear a lot of influence in it today. Sort of proto folk punk? Besides the obvious blister in the sun, I really enjoyed Prove My Love and Good Feeling.
Another one of those albums that I discovered during my formative years and my friends absolutely devoured. Blister In The Sun, Kiss Off, Add It Up, all great songs, but my fave is Gone Daddy Gone.
Sleazy scuzzy fun! I maybe thought the Violent Femmes were more indie pop than this, but no, they're punky garagey rock! Fave track - "Blister in the Sun" is the most famous, and I dig it. Also liked "Add It Up" - that's a tune!
I REALLY liked this. Blister In The Sun has been on my radar for years but somehow I missed the rest of the record? They seem to be sitting in between a bunch of stuff, straddling the edges of many genres and styles at once. The punkiness really got me actually. I was finding the 'say shocking stuff' and 'be a big brat' lyrical motives really interesting and funny, and reminded me of Gob (another band I love).
very good
Great album. Blister in the sun is so overplayed, and I've heard it so many times, I can't listen to it any more, so I skipped it
This record is pretty good. I especially like the deranged vocal delivery (though I don’t find it as deranged as others do) and the clear imperfections in the music - it sounds kind of sloppy in a good way. The acoustic guitar also sounds cool on a lot of these songs, such as ‘Blister in the Sun’, probably this album’s most popular song. I don’t know how to end this review. Help.
Blister in the sun is such a classic. A lot of really good punk music here.
I enjoyed this way more than I should have, given how purile some of this stuff is. I’ll listen again, for sure. How old is Blister in the sun, though?! Really thought that was a 90s record.
way better than i was expecting it to be given the name of the band
Wow this is really good. So ahead of its time. I can hear the influence this had on modern emo groups like Modern Baseball.
Great sideA so so sideB. Minimal production. Maximum appreciation
Classic but some songs on this are weak
Such a good, and sometimes horny, album
This was definitely a more interesting than similar ones I’ve gotten. The first track is one of those for me that I might’ve heard playing at some random point in my life but never truly listened to it cuz it sounded familiar and I associated it with radio music. It’s actually pretty good and fun to hear in this setting. The rest was a bit of a mixed bag with to the kill and some other ones being pretty good but I didn’t love the album overall. Can’t decide between a high 3 or a low 4
Used to listen to this a lot when I was a teen. Still haven’t decided if it’s good but it’s for sure very fun to listen to 7/10 Fave: kiss off
The good stuff when it comes to early punk. A classic banger
great lyrics and great body of works that sums up the life of a teenager
Great album with some classic songs. This was actually my first time listening to the entire album, and there were some pleasant surprises, most notably the delightful twang of the acoustic bass on tracks like "Please Do Not Go." Good stuff.
Good album. Very upbeat and catchy. Best songs: Blister In The Sun, Add It Up, Gone Daddy Gone
This had some great songs on it. Really enjoyed it
I've always had a tough time explaining what I like about violent femmes, but I fucking love violent femmes and that's all you need to know.
Classic
Son particulier, rythmes et mélodies contagieux, un groupe qui vieillit somme toute très bien
The vocals can be a bit harsh at times but between Blister in the Sun, Add it Up, and Gone Daddy Gone there are a lot of classics on this album.
An example of how music brings memories. 1987 was a great year.
Wow this is such a surprising and refreshing sound, yet it's so amazingly expressive. It knows exactly what it wants to do and does it all so well
I can't believe this came out in 1983.. I have a whole new appreciation of the Violent Femmes. Killer Acoustic Bass Guitar and clearly influential to Alt and Indie music. Strikingly minimal while whimsical and calamitous
Classic.
Great record I hadn't even heard of. Raw alternative / indie / punk rock that could've been released a decade later than it did. A couple of real bangers with catchy melodies like 'Blister in the Sun' and 'Gone Daddy Gone'.
Classic.
classic
A lot of great songs here, plus some nostalgia. Solid 4/5
A couple recognizable tunes a couple boring tracks. Not a perfect album but a fun listen.
Listened to this album last week for the first time and wasn't a huge fan, this week I love it. Weird how mood and environment can effect your taste in music... but anyways, this is a book club, not a psychology club. Blister in the Sun is definitely the heavy hitter on this album, starts us off with a bang. Please Do Not Go, Gone Daddy Gone and Good Feeling are other favourites. I love the contrast of Good Feeling to the rest of the album - beautiful melody, strings out of nowhere, what a way to finish (not including the two separately released singles at the end in this review). Love their stripped down sound, refreshing to hear something that isn't too over-produced these days. The bass player is awesome. Feels like a pretty influential alt-rock/post punk album - found their sound reminded me of the Pixies at times. Lyrically it feels comically juvenile at times but the songwriter was 18 at the time so I'll allow it. This one will probably get added to my "albums to listen to while working" rolodex.
Liked it. Wouldn’t make my regular rotation but some great tracks and can definitely see the influence they had on what came later.
Enjoyable listen. Unique. Catchy song. Raw. Love the bass and rhythm section.
Nice sounds enougth angry to make middle angry
Enjoyed the almost chilled punk vibe
Good stuff, punky whingy stuff. Not every track hit, but there were some great tunes in there.
I'd kinda heard of Violent Femmes, but wasn't overly familiar, then I'd listened to this album a few times last year and really enjoyed it. 4.5
v good
I forgot hi ow many great songs are on this
Love it!
I love the heavy use of acoustic instruments and the range of influences that are evident in their music
Excellent album, Gordon Gano sounds very similar to Tom Verlaine (of Television) but both bands couldn’t sound any more different!
This album has always been oddly enjoyable to me. In some ways it’s a recipe for disaster; Gordon Gano’s whiney vocals, the wild bass playing, the minimalist production. But somehow it all meshes together and the album weaves in and out of frustrated angry punk and gentle radio-friendly pop songs like they were always meant to be together. The fact that Blister in the Sun, a song that’s played at stadiums to this day, is on the same album as the menacing Add It Up is just amazing. Also this came out in 1983! Thinking about all the alternative/indie bands this influenced is also wild.
love the sound, but lyrics could be... tough at times
Només coneixia "Blister in the sun" i he descobert un àlbum molt entretingut i amb cançons senzilles però efectives, on convergeixen rock, punk, americana i fins i tot una mica de reggae.
Such an iconic artifact of post-punk/early alternative, and it still holds up very well in that context. There's a strong whiff of juvenalia - and why not, it was made by kids - and the Lou Reed/Velvet Underground influence occasionally shades from homage to near imitation. The editing isnt perfect - there are several pretty clunky and abrubt fade outs in songs. But overall it's a surprisingly mature (in its vision and execution) and polished album.
What the fuck was gimme the car. Otherwise great album especially good feeling. Surprised that i still know the words to kiss off when i haven’t listened in Years
My favorite Femmes album. SO many great singles.
I confess, I already have this album. Although the first song of Violent Femmes I heard was (of all things) "The Country Death Song." Very strange, but there you go. Saw them live in college, with the original drummer. It was very interesting as he only had the snare and very little else. But that's how this whole album is, right? (More on that later). You've got a great one-two-three pinch in three of those first four songs: "Blister In The Sun," "Kiss Off," and "Add It Up." "Please Do Not Go" has a Bob Marley-esque kind of feel to it, believe it or not. It's too bad that the first song seems to have been reduced to being the song people clap along to at baseball games. It's a great song, a song about drug abuse (another one of those songs people probably should listen to more closely before they rock out to it...). So, the drums. The rest of the instrumentation doesn't bother me as much, because they do vary up the song styles. And it _DOES_ work. But just the snare? It does make it feel a little... one-dimensional. I always hoped for a little more that way. So that always nags at me, every time I listen to the album. It's that that makes it a 4-star, not a 5-star album for me.
These guys are just so...eclectic? I don't own any of their albums and probably never will but I always find myself strangely drawn to their songs when I hear them. Something about Gano's unique vocals, the unique musical arrangements (e.g., xylophone on Gone Daddy Gone...love it), or the off-kilter lyrics. I know American Music isn't on this album but that sums up their stuff - you hear it once and you think that's a stupid song. But you hear it twice and you can't stop singing along. I guess that's why this is a cult classic. If you quickly listen, you move on angrily. But if you give it a couple listens, you crave it any time you need something good but different than the rest. Or when you want to have some sing along fun. First 4 tracks are a great sequence, even if Blister in the Sun is way overplayed. Prove My Love is also a lot of fun, but also sounds a bit like Kiss Off and Add it Up smashed together. I know these guys and this album aren't for everyone. But they're/it's one of a kind (and good). And that's worth something.
Fun album. Blister in the Sun is one of those songs where I didn't know the name and then immediately said, "I know this!" Good song. I enjoyed pretty much every track. Not groundbreaking (unless there had never been punk folk before?), but a fun listen. Favorite tracks: Blister in the Sun, Kiss Off, Please Do Not Go (great bass break in the middle), Add It Up. Good stuff - I'd definitely listen again.
Nice album. Definitely a reference for future bands that came after it.
Violent Femmes made an awkward, angsty, sexually frustrated record which sounds like nothing else at the time. Creepy yet engaging, disturbing yet funny, this is a high octane burst of brilliant alternative music. With xylophones.
blister in the sun - 3.5 stars kiss off - 3 stars please do not go - 4 stars add it up - 2 stars confessions - 3 stars prove my love - 3.5 stars promise - 4 stars to the kill - 5 stars gone daddy gone -5 stars good feeling - 5 stars ugly - 4 stars gimme the car - 5 stars
Blister in the sun (Riff e vocais excelentes) Please do not go (Riff de baixo viciante)
Discazo, temazos, mucha energía
Sounds like urban punks trying to be hillbillies and I'm hear for it
Það er eins og fólkið segir: þessi plata er frábær! Ég tengi hana svo mikið við síð-níuna að ég gleymi því alltaf inn á milli að hún sé frá snemm-áttunni.
I ended up really liking this. The vocalist has a great idiosyncratic voice.
En osympatisk kille förstörde det här albumet för mig i många år i och med att han gillade det hårt. Dags att vara sjysst.
Jonathan Richman minus genialitet?
Punk beatles
It remains unclear how ironic this was ever meant to be. In real time, one definitely found it the most direct, extreme and clinical expression of Smithsian disaffectedness. It was as if punk anger slid from posturing to pathology and was delivered acoustically. And it was dangerous in a sense; one wanted to ask one's fellow frat party dancers if they took these cuts (either to the recorded versions or those supplied by up-to-date cover bands) if anyone was taking this seriously or – perish the thought – literally. "Do we hear what they're saying? Do we agree?" is what one wanted to know. But not wanting to seem too dull or obvious to the dark, reticent, pre-goth non-cheerleaders who seemed to dig the record, one decided to keep one's mouth shut. Today, it seems far too cleanly presented, if still quite authentically delivered. The catchiness lapses to kitschiness eventually. And the proceedings even read cute today (see xylophone on "Gone Daddy Gone" which is effective and refreshing, though the solo is probably overkill). It scans nearly as parody, being quite light and bright musically in contrast to the doom and gloom emotionally. Indeed, the notion of VF as black-comedy novelty act (the alt music equivalent of Harold and Maude, say) is borne out by the fact that they came and went in a blink and don't seem to have milked matters on the afters market too gratuitously. Still, as a genuinely fun listen and a richly representative artifact of a time, of a place, this record retains distinct value.
A great record whose acoustic leanings prove that punk doesn't have to be loud and fast; the aggression still comes through in the twisted lyrics and vocal delivery and the perfectly mixed rhythm section
When this album came out, it felt like a breath of fresh air. Raw and unpolished, but catchy at the same time. Especially relevant if you were a depressed teenager at the time (which I was). Excellent debut album. 4 stars.
Great!
First one on the list is already a favourite one. Great start!
Flip off your parents, but you won't because this ain't punk. Make out with Mary from biology class, but you won't because this ain't that kind of teenage drama. It's just you listening to whiny angst ridden Violent Femmes, and loving every moment of it.
Reminds me of a bad part of high school, which is a shame because this album slaps. I thought seeing the Femmes a few years ago at an outdoor festival would purge some of those memories, but the venue was overcrowded with white MAGA dudes who were still pretending to live their high school glory. Why can't I get just one screw?
A fun sound a fun album
Toksično ali ipak s razlogom kultno
Cute little album. Such a vibe. Sad they never rlly made anything else this good.
Notes - folk punk, alt punk record - debut album - most of the songs written while the singer was in high school - awkward nerdy edge, but self aware - super stripped back instrumentation lets the song stand on its own - sounds like sitting around listening to some guys you know playing songs - i listen to this album pretty regularly - lotta great earworm melodies and choruses Fav - Kiss off - iconic Least fav - To the kill - sounded like a worse version of songs already on the album 4/5
Rough and ready acoustic punk, and who could fail to love xylophone solos.
Really surprised how many of these songs I knew - wasn't aware of ever having heard much besides Blister. A pretty ace album actually.
Yeah good blister in the sun is classic
I always forget that they're Blister in the Sun. The rest is nice too
Pretty familiar with this album already. It has a lot of great stuff on it. 4/5
This is still pretty good, but not as life-affirming as REM’s debut, or at least it isn’t by today’s standards. Still, I think that “Blister in the Sun” and “Add It Up” will go off at any point in history. B
nice
Like their 1st two albums. Energetic, simple.songs, good voice.
This album has some interesting "figures" with the guitar and the bass and also the voice of the singer make the album interesting. It's also a very peculiar rock the album has this grunge style with classic rock. However a big part of the album sound the same which could make it kinda boring but with no doubt it's a good album to listen to.
Fun eccentric vibe, with dark lyrics Great album
This is not an album to be analyzed. This is one to turn up loud, sing along, and remember how fun college parties were with warm beer and sweaty people oozing pheromones and freedom.
It's been at least 30 years since I've listened to this record — though I heard "Blister In The Sun" in a store or somewhere just the other day — and I remembered more of it than I expected. This struck me as such a wild departure when it was released, acoustic punk with a sense of humor, and I liked it then, but I considered it something of a novelty record. But it's really a good album. The songs hold up, the playing is better than you think it is, and lyrically, there's a lot to like. I was a bit reticent, thinking this was not going to live up to my teenage memories ... why can't I get just one fuck? How subversive. But this is no novelty record. It's definitely affected and not right for all occasions, but it's good, for real.
Yes! This is most definitely an album to listen to before you die. Preferably in your late teens with friends at the party when you are ready to dance. Just don’t jump on the bed…it will break.
Pretty hype. Never noticed the velvet underground influence before. - 4 stars
This is a great alternative album. I’ve included it in my library.
Punk folk. Brilliant. Even better if they made a punk rock version.
I like it a lot, his voice is so laid back, their songs feel so punk, so free, and it's easy to listen, definitely gonna add most of the songs on my playlist. It's apparently Folk Punk Album which I've never heard of, and I would like to hear more!
comico constante, ludico y original blister in the sun ★ kiss off confessions ★ promise gone daddy gone 3.8
Simplicity. It’s three dudes in a half circle around one microphone, singing these catchy little tunes. Love it (8/10) FT: Blister in the Sun, Kiss Off, Confessions, Gone Daddy Gone
It’s raw and radical, it’s childish and refreshing. These early days of Indiepoppunk had their genius moments. And they are still there even 40 years later!
They’d be great for shaky. There were a few songs I knew that I didn’t know was them
Love the Violent Femmes! They’re so incredibly unique and fun to listen to.
Upbeat fun and a couple ear worms
Enjoyed more than I thought I would.
Good, grungy vibes
This is a super interesting album. I'd heard Blister In The Sun plenty but never listened to the whole record. It sounds as if it was made far later than it was. Very early pop punk, indie rock mix. Enjoyed it.
Absolutely good melody
Another new find for me, I had not heard of Violent Femmes before this. Sounds a lot more 90s than early 80s. Love the bare-bones production. And the xylophone solo on Gone Daddy Gone has no business being that good.
The OG folk punk album
First time I've ever hear the full cd played through. Moving this into my rotation.
Weird but great!
requires a few listens to get into it, is quite innovative for year 1983, but other bands made it better later on. 7/10
Actually never listened to this full album. It's really good.
Oh Hell Yes. Though this album is slightly too entwined with my memories of working at Dick Smith and a particular branch manager at the time.
MAD nostalgia points for this one! "Blister in the Sun", "Kiss Off", "Add It Up", "Promise", and "Gone Daddy Gone" were in heavy rotation in late middle school when I was establishing my iTunes library and let me tell you, them play counts were HIGH.
Blister in the sun! One of the best guitar riffs / acoustic guitar riffs of all time. So simple and memorable. I didn't realize this album (this band?) was so acoustic-driven. I love the bass sound and performance that pulls your attention throughout the entire album. It is easily the defining voice on this record. Acoustic bass guitars aren't so commonly used and man does it sound great on these tracks. Overall I thought it was great. Blister in the Sun is obviously the standout track and I think the only thing that hurts the record is that there are a few songs that sound kind of similar to that one and it doesn't stray too far in any direction from that one sound.
Already listened
Pas 100% mon genre, mais c'est impressionnant comment cet album sonne en avance sur son temps. Ça aurait pu sortir dans les années 90
I thought I’d get tired after the first song because the vocals are… unique, but I had a fair amount of fun listening!
Pretty fun album. Only knew the single and there’s more to this band than that one song from all the indie comedies.
