Reviews (page 5 of 8)
Well, on first listening, I found I liked the most traditional-sounding song, "Two Doves" and found the rest hard to get into. I worked a little to get into "Stillness Is the Move" and started to appreciate it a bit more. Repeated listening may spark more appreciation, but there's hundreds of albums to go and I'm not gonna.
I listened a few times and still couldn’t really get into it. There is a peculiar nature to the compositions that I thought repeated listening might make me better see the beauty. However, I still only found the album as something that I can tolerate, not really like.
Cool, aber auch schwere Kost!
Guter anspruchsvoller Pop
Close to a 4, but I don't feel quite that strongly.
Didn't like as much as I remember. Vocals sound great and interesting music, it just doesn't add up to much really. Stillness Is The Move is a great song though
Very enjoyable. Most likely a strong grower.
OK. Nothing out of the ordinary
Not immediate but wanted to listen again when it got to the end
I really wanted to like this album but it didn't give me anything to really grasp on to. This history was fascinating - including the stories behind the band members and the art work - so I would love to spend more time in the space of this album but in the meantime I'm giving it 3 stars. Mainly becuase I can appreciate the experiemental nature of the album and the fact that the Dirty Projectors tried to do something a little different... It just may be a little TOO different for me.
It's growing on me.
Very much a Euro Alt Rock / Indie type thing. Never heard of this group before. Very up and down with some relatively normal folksy type indie tunes, and then getting into some weird yodeling and jazzy/inconsistent melodies. It was ok, seemed very experimental, not really my cup of tea but I didn't hate it. Vocalists remind me of Mother Mother, lots of harmonies with the 3 of them but the music almost gives me a Swedish or Icelandic Fairy-tale kind of vibe. A bit trippy and very offbeat. It's so hard to pin down.
A bit of odd-ball pop music. Does not stray away from eccentric arrangements and play-styles. But, at it's core, it's still pretty good indie pop music. Some may find the eccentricity annoying, what with the constant off-beat hits and moving from one riff to another. It sounds similar to what ADHD would be like in music form. All that being said, I don't think it would be nearly as memorable if it didn't have those manic moments. One of the simpler songs, Two Doves, is a nice song but doesn't stick with me like the weirder tracks that come before. The drum break in Useful Chamber was particularly fun, leading into the dirty distortion of the next section in the song. I think, at the end of the day, this isn't going to be one of my favorites. It's just too self-indulgent to have any really depth, despite how much I appreciate the choices made to make this album stand out.
5/10 - Talent was there from the musicians but the vocals were super off putting. I feel like they are very pretentious....
Great harmonies with interesting music to go along with it
Interesting. One of the male vocalists sounds like Jeremy of "Woody & Jeremy"
// Favs: – Score: Light to Decent 3
I *think* I liked this. It was an experience.
Alright
Chill, nothing exciting but good.
Stillness is the move is die goede NBA 2k13 bop. 3.5
This was an interesting modern relief after a run of stodgy 80s acts. Kinda weird, thin, jagged stuff. Pretty good in parts but was lacking either a folk mind or a indie pop dancefloor heart.
The singer and some of the songs gave me some serious Ra Ra Riot vibes, which I enjoyed. Highlights: Cannibal Resource, Two Doves, Fluorescent Half Dome
Took a second listen to get this one but it’s actually pretty good. I really like the way they use the guy and girl vocals and some of the weird guitar timing was really interesting. I could see this growing on me and deserving a higher rating but for now it’s a 3. My favorite tracks were “Cannibal Resource” and “Stillness Is The Move”.
Ovo je zapravo jako dobar album. Odlično ime benda, coveri albuma su im top i htio sam neko vrijeme ih preslusati i evo napokon. Nešto malo drugačije, instrumentalna potkrepljeni sa ženskim/muškim vokalima.
Начну с небольшого списка альбомов, вышедших в 2009 году и не указанных в списке: Karnivool — Sound Awake Mastodon — Crack the Skye Sonic Youth — The Eternal Muse — The Resistance Kid Cudi — Man on the Moon: The End of Day Converge — Axe to Fall Porcupine Tree — The Incident Puscifer — "C" Is for (Please Insert Sophomoric Genitalia Reference Here) Tyler the Creator — Bastard Bat for Lashes — Two Suns Immortal — All Shall Fall
I thought it was nice and varied. I didn't think it sounded loads like vampire weekend tbh. I might give it another listen later today because word on the street is it's better the second time.
The sound is immediately recognizable as more modern than most of the 1001 LPs. I like the way the guitar plays the rhythm without strumming. I appreciate the originality of how they accomplish this. There is something in their sound related to the transitions within the songs that you might label unusual or creative (depending on whether you like it) . It's not only the vocals or guitars coming in unexpectedly, although this is done a fair bit, but also other jumps within the songs. I can't describe these maneuvers well and certainly can’t explain how they get the listener to heed the jumps but the fact they accomplish this with the listener validates their creativity. While I appreciate the music and the creativity, I find the "sleight of hand" in their music cumbersome and, at the end of the day, exhausting.
The record was quirky and took some risks. While it was not my cup of tea I know some folks who probably love it or would so.
I don’t know how I feel about this
I enjoyed this album and more so on the second time of listening, my favourite track was ‘stillness is the move’. I would have no idea how to categorise this music genre but i’m a fan yeah. Not quite 4 stars but a high 3.
Frequently kind of jarring, and a little too out there for me to deeply enjoy it.
Salvages a three because its so close to being good. Some of their artistic choices making it see more disjointed than it needs to be. Feels a bit like my head is spinning listening to this album. Worth maybe giving another shot later
Decent!
3/5
This is a quirky collection of songs. I enjoyed the ones with the female vocalists; moving the background vocals up front was very different and original; I didn’t like the constant changes of mood and tempo. This wasn’t in the original 1001 so it must be a recent addition.
I like this more than I'd like to admit.
Enjoyable but kinda weird and hectic
Rock experimental.
n/a
The vocals, a little trying to me. Maybe too clever by half.
I respect the experimental-ness, but it doesn't always work for me. The guys voice is not my cup of tea, the female led vocals are better for me, like on Stillness is The Move which is not bad. But it is definitely indie-pop, which in the end I still don't usually like a lot.
eh
I enjoyed this but didn't love it. I think if I was seeing them live I really like them but nothing really drew me back to the album. As discussed I think they are a time sensitive band and listening to them now they just sound like many others bands but looking at the year this album came out it must have been a pretty fresh sound.
On second listen I did like this album more - I think I would have loved it had I discovered it during my indie phase of high school
Pretty good. A little odd at times but enjoyable.
Alright I guess
3
2009 indie
Interesting
This album caught me on a good day. I was in the mood for something like this. But, as I type this, I realize the album was largely forgettable.
Indie-rock, moderne, opløftende, eksperimenterende, varieret vokal
Too fiddly for me
This is more of a 3.5 than a 3. Some really beautiful moments here, but sometimes a little too chaotic for my taste. Still, I'm surprised by how much I enjoyed it considering the fact that I got a free song from this album back in 2010/2011 and I didn't like it back then. We love to see the evolution of music taste! Growth!!
stop sprawling and start editing people
A bit plinky plonky in places but it had some good tracks
3.5/5. It was different, but good. I liked the sounds on it. I need to listen again.
test
Rätt stökiga, ostrukturerade melodier och många olika typer av sound genom hela albumet. På ett bra sätt! Dock lite för modernt och fräscht för min smak!
Pretty mid, and an uninspiring listen. This list more filler than killer 😒
What if indie rock but having a lot of weirdness and not a lot of catchiness?
Eh this has some interesting bits in it, but I have no idea what it wants to be. Some individual tracks have consistency but as an album its all over the place. What is the point of this, what is it aiming for. I have no idea, but I feel like it missed. 2stars
weird alternative pop that seems like it was made for a particular audience. The type of person that has a mustache tattoo on their finger and only drinks craft beer, artisinal everything, and an incredibly insufferable personality. I cant be mad, I think in 2010 I wouldve forced myself to like this because its different. Its all disjointed as hell, its like the singers are on a different track than the music behind them.
Propositions musicales intéressantes en théories, mais l'impression constante qu'il manque un truc. L'album est banale et je ne peux pas citer une chose que j'ai vraiment kiffer, mais en même temps ne m'explose pas les oreilles
bad
I’m in the bathroom of the Thought Lot taking a wet leaky crap while a college freshman at the sink takes a moment to reflect on their polycule relationship with their professor and other classmates. This is playing off of someone’s iPhone X in the stale next to me. It’s alright.
Absolutely garbage. Nothing new or original, sounded like a wannabe Beatles cover band, with some 'experimental' stuff thrown in, which translates to making stupid noises and strumming guitars randomly. Didn't enjoy anything in this really.
A bit quirky.
Ihan ok meininkiä, useampi vokalisti. Välillä räikeitä rytmissäpysymättömyyksiä mikä ei tuolla tavalla iske laisinkaan.
I gotta say this album felt like it was specifically designed to meet a lot of my regular complaints about other albums while still being “not really my thing”. The best example of this is I’m always complaining that albums need to take bigger risks and incorporate more variety or more creative originality. This album definitely has that, unfortunately it still didn’t really work for me. One of the biggest obstacles for me is I don’t really like the vocals. Far from the worst I’ve heard, and definitely not the worst vocals on this list, but I still found it underwhelming in that capacity. I’ll just cut to the highlights, the songs I liked were “stillness is the move” and “no intention”. Both of these songs I think did the most with their creativity, while the other songs had their moments but I didn’t enjoy any of them at bough to save. I’m glad I gave this album another chance cause I really hated it at first, but it’s not THAT bad.
Dette fikk æ bare ikke til. Vanilla Ice versjonen av Beyonce, No4 vibes, og ingen låter som ga meg behag i øret. Skal være litt snill og trekke opp siden platen var relativt kort.
As decisive as beefheart . Experimental pop. I might like it but for his voice
Experimental but annoying.
It's just annoying enough to frustrate me. I almost like this.
New to me - I had dismissed Dirty Projectors as pretentious guff when they first came out. That snap judgement wasn't totally wrong, but quite enjoyed parts of this. Would listen again.
I had never heard of this, and I really didn’t like it as it started, it got mildly interesting towards the middle (bit depeche mode). Overall not great though
Annoying af
Hat mich richtig genervt! Kann aber nicht behaupten, dass das per se schlecht ist.
These guys really should've invested in a metronome and a few piano lessons. Frugal bastards
Meh
reviews on this were so hateful and so fun to read. to be honest, i don't despise this as much as others apparently do. there were enough interesting musical turns of phrase to elevate this to 2-3 territory, but something about it all does just make you a little angry
Did not enjoy, the music seemed to go nowhere and the songs were forgettable.
The issue I have with art pop / rock, and I assume that this is what we have here, is it don't know what a bad example of the genre is. I like the songs in the middle of this album, but Stillness Is The Move and Two Doves seem to be collaborations. Remade Horizon is my favourite out of the songs with the man singing, as it appears to be the only song where he's sticking close to the tune being played by the musicians and the rhythm being knocked out by percussion. For most of the rest, everyone seems to be going completely rogue, with backing vocals bearing no relation to lead vocals in some of the songs. My favourite part of the entire thing is the last 30 seconds of the last song and it shouldn't be like that. Is this the best that art pop has to offer? I really hope not. A low 2 stars.
I don't think this is that bad, but its still hipster bullshit. Favorite track: The Bride 2.5/5
A couple of OK moments but a lot more WTF is this?
No le presté atención, y aunque supongo que pueda ser por mi culpa entiendo que el disco en sí mismo algo tendrá que ver.
Sure
Had its moments, but not enough to linger long in the memory.
started off so strong with cannibal resource but unfortunately my enthusiasm for this album faded from there. wasn’t super keen on the vocals 😥
I can absolutely imagine BBC 6 Music listeners lapping it up—this feels tailor-made for that crowd: arty, angular, and just accessible enough to feel cool without ever quite settling into something straightforward. Respect it more than I love it.
His vocals aren't that good, the guitar is decent, the background melodies are nice, but put them all together and it's quite shit.
Track 5 reaches acceptable - just. Most of this is dissonant and cacophanous with a highly annoying vocal track.
I tried to get into this album back when it first had buzz because I liked "Stillness Is the Move," but it's too fussy and uptight, and mostly seemed too pleased with its own cleverness
I had never heard of this artist and, when the first track started, fully expected to hate this. Which, for the most part I did, but there were a couple of tracks I found tolerable. Really it’s 1.5* because of that.
I am actually tired of the amount of 2's already spent on this project.
Quirky for the sake of quirky (5.5) ★★½
I can see why the Orca was bitter. This is just a load of herky jerky, angular, twee Pitchfork indie nonsense with the same twiddly insubstantial razor wire guitar lick lashing through nearly every song. The male vocals are as grating as Sam Smith being fed through a cheese grater and the female vocals apart from a few nice spots on Stillness Is The Move and Two Doves were pretty annoying as well. Very nice album cover though.
I didn’t even notice as it went by
Just boring, didn’t grab my attention
dziwne idk 2 a 3
Help me. After this album, I’m confused as to the difference between good musicians playing shitty music and shitty musicians playing good music… And, I think there should be a rule that, in order to be eligible for this list, the vocalist must be required to listen, at least once, to the accompaniment before recording or vice versa, a practice that clearly never happened here.
It feels like a messy album. Some parts sound good, and some just feel weird to me.
No es de mi gusto.
I like it as much as I did in 2009. A little too off-kilter/off-beat to be a pleasant listen, but I guess it's a good challenging listen.
Not bad, but not especially noteworthy. Sounded like a dozen other indie artists
I wish the 00s picks didn’t also have to sound so 60s inspired, but I don’t expect anything more from this list. Even for bands that sounded like this, this is not memorable.
wikipedia has this quote: "Someone was asking me about what I was listening to and I was saying "Oh, Dirty Projectors, I love the new album," and they were like, "Well what kind of music is it?" and I just stopped dead in my tracks and literally didn't know how to describe it. At first I was embarrassed because I didn't know how to describe it, but then I was like, this is what's so amazing about a lot of music now. There are so many different things and there's so much going on and Bitte Orca is so distinctly Dirty Projectors that I didn't even know how to begin to describe what genre it is, you know? " - Ed Droste and some of the reviews on this site are taking the same angle. Confused by that. This is clearly a poppier version of a lot of prog rock acts - you can hear Yes, Jethro Tull, Triumph, so on but heavily mixed with what indie rock / pop was doing at the time like Bon Iver or Tune-Yards. Anybody doing this list might have also been unlucky enough to be inflicted with a Prefab Sprout album and what they were doing isn't terribly far from what Dirty Projectors is doing. It's not nearly so incomprehensible, on either the Good or Bad end of the scale, as people are making it out to be. So is it good? Well, sometimes. The falsetto works for me on a song like Cannibal Resource and is godawful on something like Temecula Sunrise, but that song cold sucks. On The Bride there are sections of the song where it works and sections of the song where you consider devoting your life to damaging the dude's vocal cords. Same deal with relegating Angel Deradoorian and Amber Coffman to the sort of backing vocals thing they're doing. Both are better singers than lead dude but sometimes they are a fantastic accompaniment. Stillness is the Move and Two Doves are by by by far the best songs on the album and even then they make some weird choices I don't think entirely work Right, but is it good? I think overall it falls just short, but I went into this album expecting to absolutely hate it based on the description and kind of liked it instead. if this gets a three it's because I'm rounding up, if this gets a two it's because I get bad vibes from Longstreth
Slop
Vocals ruined this for me, which is sad because I liked some of the guitar work a lot.
Quirky w its own style, some glimmers of interesting composition, but overall a bit too precious for its own good
Listen, I get trying to make something artsy and fun. But by the second song, with his sarcastic(?) yeahs I really just wanted to throw the singer out with the garbage. I like ideas on this but the execution is so poor.
Not nearly as bad as people here are making it out to be. But also not nearly as good as people are trying to make it sound. It IS in fact elitest hipster art pop. At a time when this music was celebrated. Yet this one remained some obscurity. I don't like that much of the layering and panning sounds like someone's first time producing an album. But also do not like how the contents of the songs sound almost improvised. I wish I could appreciate and understand what's going on here. My zany music comes from Animal Collective, Postal Service, Arcade Fire and other genremates who also had releases in this era.
Pretty pretentious, feels like this album thinks it’s better than it is
Not in my edition of the book! 2009. 2.5 stars. Inoffensive US alt-rock with one or two half decent tunes. Ok but not memorable in any way. Not sure why this is on the list?
far too indie for me. too creative or something like that
Cada dia me arrepiento más de hacer esto
I feel like this group just wants to be weird for weird's sake. Like...it's not bad but also not good? There's nothing wrong with using complex time signatures, or uncommon chord sequences and stuff like that. But I don't know...it's just bizarre in an irritating way. At least it's much more interesting than another of the many 60/70s classic rock bands on this list.
So I put this on and my immediate reaction was "Oh, fuck off." But then I guess my brain recalibrated to the weird syncopated rhythms and off kilter harmonies, because then the album was almost over and I kind of forgot I was listening to it. Which I guess is not exactly a ringing endorsement. So yeah, annoying at first, then it turned kinda bland once I got used to it. But then I paid attention it again and came full circle. So, "oh, fuck off."
A 2 - as Ian Smith would say - by the barest of margins. Those first 3 songs were absolutely atrocious. It got better with Stillness Is The Move - being the best song on the album - and the one after that was OK. If that bloke never sang again the world would be a better place for it.
Petty bad
Unnecessary.
i'm so sorry i don't mean to come off as disrespectful but this album is just... a trainwreck. that's the best way i can think to describe this listening experience, genuinely. peace and love. not giving a 1 star rating only because it did not physically pain me to listen.
Not all bad but a lot of this just feels quirky for quirky's sake. It strikes me as a record that would probably grow on you after more listens but sadly I don't really have the desire to do that right now.
There were a couple tracks where temu Mariah carey was on point that I didn't hate but overall a struggle. Is this like Trout Mask Replica where I have to listen 7.3 times before it clicks and I think it is the greatest album ever?
Songs are ambitious and interesting, but I can’t say I plan to listen again.
Not really what I was hoping for.
Not good.
Some beautiful noises and novelties sprinkled throughout. Fundamentally though this is still a collection of dull pop songs over unsatisfyingly complex compositions
Hipster Indie pop, had moments I liked but mostly just can't get into it. I'm sure I would like this more seeing live on stage, but as an album on its own, really not my thing.
Simply ok. Not particularly impressed, doubt I'll come back to this album or this group in the future.
I wanted to like this album. I really did. And while I can acknowledge its immense creativity and interesting musical choices, I honestly didn’t really enjoy it. I get its experimental. But I feel like sometimes “experimental” is code for “hipster experimental music the artists think is really clever and makes them look smart.” The song titles don’t help with that. “Cannibal Resource”? “Useful Chamber”? “Fluorescent Half Dome”? What do these mean? And that’s what this felt like to me. I hate to reduce an album to that. But I just couldn’t really jive with this album. There’s things to like, but I just didn’t get it overall. I don’t really know what else more I can say. It felt like Vampire Weekend’s first album if that album took like, a step further and discarded some of the common conventions of song structure and rhythm. I will not be relistening and I will not seek more of them out. Not bad by any means, but not worth the listen . 3 stars. Did I need to hear this before I die? I could live without it.
Є певні цікаві елементи, але загалом мені якось не сподобалось.
with all the multiple time changes per song, it has a very jerky feeling to it. no flow. once you start liking the song, BANG!, here come the time changes. it's safe to say i will never listen to this album again. silence and alone in my thoughts might be a better choice.
Ok to listen for exposure to it but something i am a fan of.
Album #1,066 I appreciate the effort of wanting to sound different. They accomplished that for sure. Does it always work out? Definitely not, sometimes coming off as Shaggs-inspired with the ever-changing time signatures and the band playing out of time with each other. I thought one song was decent, was Stillness Is the Move, which may also be the most normal sounding one. Useful Chamber is awful (I think I heard the dreaded auto-tune in this one), as is Remade Horizon. Most of it just didn't work for me. The female singers sounded good. The male singer sounded like he wanted to be John Lennon pretty badly.
Very different with some really good guitar in here. I liked the unconventional effects used. The songwriting is creative. The album is ahead of it's time, that's for sure, but it's not for me. I didn’t find the songs that interesting. So while I can appreciate the creative decisions, I didn’t really enjoy them. No favorite track off of this one.
This album is from the New York indie rock group Dirty Projectors. The sound is somewhat unique. I enjoyed the harmonies and the orchestral accompaniment, but I didn’t care for the music. Overall 2.5 out of 5 stars.
I'm just pasting my notes in as I wrote them down during my listen. For such a weird album, I feel like not organizing or cleaning up this review is what Dirty Projectors would have wanted: This is a weird discordant album. Bitte Orca is a dumb name that doesn't mean anything and I irrationally hate it even though lots of bands do it. I can't help it. "Temecula Sunrise" is just chaos, and not necessarily in a good way. "Everyone do your own thing!" doesn't work for a reason. This theme persists throughout the album but to a lesser degree. The male singer started to piss me off pretty quickly. But a lot of the lyrics are at least interesting. Harmonies are nice but off-putting sometimes. Seems like a band trying to do too much, or cram too much into each song. Could stand to tone it back a little. It's at least unique, I'll give them that. There's something to be said about at least standing out in a sea of the same old shit. Standout tracks were "Temecula Sunrise" - it kinda bothered me so much that I keep thinking about it, so it definitely stood out. Dammit they got me.... and "No Intention" - really liked that little guitar theme throughout the song. I dont know quite how to rate this, but it's got me thinking. It's an interesting listen, but one I'd probably not do again. Enough on the album kinda bothered me that it's probably a 2 out of 5, maybe a 2.5.
Too off-the-wall for me. Wouldn't listen again
Todd Rundgrenesque (I don't get it)
The songs are mostly bland and whatever. Good background music. Best song: Stillness Is The Move
Just enough shades of Fleet Foxes to keep me engaged
i feel like i should like it more but it's kinda eh. like i guess they tried to do a bunch of different styles but none of them really work fav song: Temecula Sunrise
Unas de cal y unas de arena. Vibra tipo Foals o LCD Soundsystem, pero ya pasados de efusividad. Escuchable en una caminada tranqui de domingo
This album came across as a self-indulgent, hipster-leaning art statement that felt more concerned with being eccentric than being listenable. It's an overload of sonic experimentation that rarely settles into anything cohesive. Bitte Orca is tolerable at its absolute peak, but at its lowest points it’s a chore to get through. It didn’t resonate with me at all. In all honestly, it feels like another example of why the original 1001-album list didn’t need to be expanded.
This is music for people who want everyone to know how edgy and different they are. In other words, this isn't even remotely likeable music as it never settles into a normal cadence that could be enjoyed. People who give this a 5 want to watch the world burn.
Didn't enjoy this
I liked a few songs. Mainly the ones sang by the female member of the group. The male vocalist just didn’t do it for me. Also there were a few songs that had good parts and then completely changed to a different vibe and killed my enjoyment. A few also had strange time signatures that I couldn’t get into
it sounds like when that one guy with a beanie in a rich "hippie" group threatens to pull out a guitar and suddenly every mf around is jolly and one with nature
Very restless beats with male falsetto....it was interesting to listen to, but I won't listen again. And "Bitte Orca" is such a fucking stupid name.
Certainly not the worst album on this list, but i found this quite forgettable. Not much to hold on to in the listen, even if it wasn’t too bad to listen to.
A little bit too pretentious for me at times and overall kind of boring. But every kind of music has it's own time and place. This album's place and time is when I'm in retirement home however.
o famoso “mais genérico que paracetamol de 5 na farmácia”, não é ruim, mas é ruim
DEFINITIVAMENTE um album de indie rock de 2009. esse album FEDE a millennial puta merda eh meia boca. nao curti mto nao....
Some interesting sounds can be found on Bitte Orca but you have to go through a lot of mediocre to flat out bad junk to find them & to me it's just not worth it. An overall bad experience with brief moments of interesting, inspired music. The vocals are annoying above all else. There goes my 5/5 streak!
The title of this album is very much a harbinger for the music it contains. Two words that don’t fit and are nonsensical together, just because the band thinks it can sounds good. This record is filled with exactly that; the band trying things to be different. But different isn’t always good. Have you ever heard the phrase, “even a blind squirrel finds a nut every once in a while?” That’s this album in a nutshell (pun not intended). Sure, in trying to be unique they very sporadically stumble into something good, but way more often than not it’s just strange and not good at all.
Two Doves was really the only song on the album I enjoyed. The rest though very unique, just didn't hit for me.
Bitte no more
Ok 2/5
Overall, pretty nice album. Again though, nothing that hit me more than anything else. Favorite Song: Two Doves - beautiful lyrics, love the instrumental melody, the “call on me” almost sounds like a bird call
Feels very Coldplay derivative. Like they're trying to do something artsy and unique here but it just doesn't sound good. All the sounds kind of blend into one big ball of meh.
Mannered, proggy, hints of Squeeze, of Beach Boys, plenty of herky-jerky beats and fiddly guitar lines, but not much in the way of melody or hooks or interest. All very insubstantial. If you asked "Alexa, play an audio example of 'clever-clever' ", then this album would be what Alexa played.
I didn’t really enjoy listening to this album. It’s not as bad as a one star album, but it isn’t worth three stars, either. It’s just not my cup of tea. The vocals are kinda shrill and none of the songs really stands out, neither lyrically, nor melody-wise.

Couple songs were ok but some I couldn’t even finish.
Overall that was really bad. The male vocal was terrible and the guitar playing wasn’t any better. I don’t need to hear that ever again.

no pude pasar de la primera canción, tal vez en otro momento le de otra oportunidad
While listening to this album, the word that came to mind was hodgepodge as that is what the music seemed to me. Most of the songs were like a collection of snippets of music strung together with little rhyme or reason and titled and that was the song. I didn't hate it, but for me, it was just mediocre.
'Stillness is the Move' is a great track that I played a couple of times. Seemed out of place with much of the rest of the album. Actually quite disliked the first couple of tracks. Last half of the album was a bit better and enough to stop a 1/5.
Kinda wack tbh
Yo soy la jurado y si no me gustó, no me gustó!
50 seconds into the first song girl what is this this band def went to coachella with flower crowns in 2014 is there gonna be someone yelling in the back of all these songs favorite song: two doves
I think that yankee foxtrot hotel ruined any other 2000s indie folky style type albums for me. None of the others standup to it. And this album though maybe not the exact same genre still isn’t as good. I don’t love this album and it’s just kinda annoying me tbh. The violin and drums sound good though and I like the length of the album. That’s perfect!
This is a strong candidate for the most 2009 album of all time; maybe even more than The XX. It's peak late 00s indie excess and quirkiness for the sake of quirkiness. It's impossible to understand the rise of 'Stomp Clap' indie folk in the 2010s without understanding how unbearable 'regular' indie became. I'm not sure there's even any Stomp Clap records on this list which seems unfair given it's momentary importance, but I won't dwell on it. The Dirty Projectors brand of landfill indie made great fodder for hipster store soundtracks and forgetting that we were in the height of the worst recession since the great depression, but it's never been great active listening music. "Temecula Sunrise" and "Useful Chamber" are especially difficult listens. The only bit of nostalgia I got from this record was a compulsion to listen to Los Campesinos! (apparently my preferred version of this kind of music). Two stars because it offers useful momentary context, but otherwise doesn't feel like required listening. I won't revisit this one.
1.5
Not as good as thought I was. Remembered why I deleted it out of my iTunes. Boring
This is a Seinfeld album - it's an album about nothing. It's not great, not offensive, not imaginative, not bland - it's really not anything. I imagine the band looks like an SNL skit about a hipster/indie pop band that never made it but still somehow continued into their 40's. So many f'ing 2's on this list.
Two Doves wants to sound like Nico's Fairest of the Seasons, right? kinda like aspects of this in a way that makes me ashamed to be a Millennial. things I will defend: - the time signature inconsistencies & changes are a good idea to give the songs forward motion. they show up in organic places. they simply didn't rock hard enough for it to land. - the split parts are a good idea, a thing that is consistently cool in band dynamics. some of the guitar lines are a big nothing, some of them do rock. the indefensible: - Dirty Projectors guy's oversinging lots sounds like a band trying hard to be fun, not pretentious, but they don't get there, and I do feel a little sad judging. this is a 2 because I can't see myself suggesting anyone listen. music: hated. (⌐■_■)
re-living 2013
Not objectively horrible, but so incredibly boring and tuneless.
4/10
I heard a toddler cover this record, track for track, on a Fisher Price toy piano, with his feet.
Favourite: Two Doves
Ehh, not for me. Kind of weird.
Felt pretentious and self-indulgent in an obnoxious way. 2*
I thought i would like this when it FIRST started (based on the instrumentation) but the background vocals were something... I like parts of it but some of the more experimental choices are not for me.
Would have gotten 1 star if not for Two Doves. I don’t know how this album got on this list. Maybe I am too young to appreciate its relevance at the time but I have never heard of this group before today.
favs: stillness is the move
Too busy I can’t submit to anything
I like the name 'Dirty Projectors' and there are a few tracks that have an original sound, but overall I'd take this sound in VERY light doses.
I’m not sure this was for me. I can appreciate the experimental qualities of the songs but none of them resonated with me. I enjoyed the voices of the females in the group.
Very up it's own arse, I think.
Not to my taste
pretentious as 2009 could get
One of the first songs annoyed me so much I don’t even care to refer back to it to name it here. Why the hell is this on here - weak 2 stars, nearly gave it a 1 but I don’t have the strength to relisten and give it much thought
That was pretentious fluff.
Not really my thing. Very unique though, so credits for that. Also, reminds me of Parkitect music, the game I was playing while listening. Highlights: Stillness Is The Move and Useful Chamber.
Respect to LZ. This one's isn't a fave for me
Impressive playing but sounds way too American for me.
Some of this was okay, but it was mostly pretentious and try hard.
2 stars It was giving me anxiety
whatever
Maybe a 2.5
Non traditional song structures.
21st century synth indie. It's fine at what it is but not my thing.
Trying too hard to be something new and interesting, failing miserably. Some okay moments, but overall I did not like this.
Non-offensive millennial indie pop. Not much to be said really. I‘d rather be listening to Grizzly Bear if I wanted my fix of this genre of music
I could smell the hipster on this from a mile away. 2.3.
A perfect combination of "pretentious" and "trying too hard." Personal enjoyment: 2/5 Relevance to this list: 2/5
This one wasn't for me. Gets a 2 because there was one song that was fine.
I was in college deep in the Pitchfork-verse when this came out and even then it didn't click with me. There are beautiful moments but holy shit are they trying SO hard you can hear it. 2/5
Not my thing. Sounds like a cult waiting to dring the kool aid at the end of the concert.
Expérimental rock violin????
This really made me feel old in that it felt so early aughts and that that is an actual thing that can be identified now. That being said, the music was okay, but wasn't really into the vocals. "No Intention" was really the only song I enjoyed on here.
Overall fairly standard Late 00s/ Early 10s Indie/Chamber Pop, the harmonized backing vocals are annoying but the guitar bits are nice. Nothing really stands out positively or that strongly negatively. I would rather just listen to Mac Demarco. This list continues to drop the ball in its 90s-10s Indie selections. 4/10.
• 2/5 • one good single (Stillness is the Move), but the rest is too art-rocky for my taste
Joanna Newsome with attitude. Precious, but with teeth.
Bitte nicht Orca. Why do I have an earworm of the song Remade Horizon...
Was not my jam. I listened through about half of it. Don't think it's great background listening. Nothing musical or lyrically or melodically kept my interest, aside from the "annoying" sections.
Not my taste. Not quite tonal and pleasingly harmonic enough for me.
This is a difficult one to rate. At first I didn't like it and wondered if I'd get through the album. By the middle, it was okay, and then toward the end, not liking it again. I'd give it a 2.5 but not sure I could really bump it up to 3.
'Bitte Orca' is very hard to describe, as there's a lot going on here. Indie Rock seems to be the best genre to describe this release by Dirty Projectors, but there's plenty of falsetto from vocalist and chief songwriter David Longstreth [enough to keep Radiohead or The Darkness fans happy], as well as warm, multilayered female vocals, fiddly guitar and electronic trickery to put this album beyond any solid genre. But is it an enjoyable collection of music? Eh...... While I admire the creativity and ideas put into 'Bitte Orca', the dissonant melodies, random tempo shifts and that 'hard to escape' feeing the group is rushing through the vocals before the music has caught up make this record a rather perplexing listen. Now, if the purpose of the album was to create a unique listening experience that stands out on the basis of its individuality, then it definitely passed the test. But for me, the ideas seem like they're benched before they're given enough space to grow, so its really difficult [for me anyway] to truly appreciate this album. I do like weird, unusual stuff [Mr. Bungle, Primus, Kraftwerk etc.], but there's a consistency in those bands that I struggle to find with Dirty Projectors. It's like I'm hearing a strange, disjointed compilation album from four or five different groups. While I appreciate the daring approach to the album, it just doesn't do it for me. Not one song really grabbed me. 2/5
very low 2
I found the front half of the album somewhat weak, but things started improving with "Stillness Is the Move." By the end I was left thinking that this was a decent album, but unfortunately not one I am likely to seek out often.
One good song and some interesting ideas.
Cover 5 Generally not a fan of experimental groups (Beefheart, Tom Waits, Yoko Ono). I do very much like those that have a semblance of musicianship and understanding of a good beat (Primus). I might not be verbalizing exactly what I mean, though. Anyway, this album leans toward Primus, though they sound nothing like Primus. In other words, they at least restrain themselves from going completely off the edge. Unlike Primus, I'm not interested enough to look into their discography.
*2009. American indie. *Did not like this very much. *Sounds like something from Garden State, but not good. *Boring indie with too high pitched voices. RATING - 5/10
Not sure what's supposed to be so special about this lol
Irritating vocals sung in an atonal and arrhythmic style offset some otherwise promising tracks here. I guess I’m not artistic enough to enjoy this.
Bitte Orca, for all its stupidity and annoying vocals, does belong on this list. For a moment, it perfectly encapsulated an entire scene. For some, this album was sacred. I recall hearing Stillness is the Move for the first time (separately from the album as a whole). The song was so perfectly descriptive of the sound everyone was going for, it actually brought tears to my eyes. When hearing it later, followed by Two Doves, the pair of songs were (and still feel) like excellent compliments of each other. However, barring select musical moments, interesting instances in an otherwise tiresome forty minute jumble, those two songs are pretty much all that remains worthwhile to revisit here.
Vocals and guitar are jarring
There's elements within this album that I like, but I really didn't enjoy how they all came together.
Difficult to listen to.
A bit all over the place. Didn't work for me. The male vocalist is annoying as hell. I don't think they knew what to be as they jumped genres faster than a hurdler. Pass.
Meh, nogal vervelend om naar te luisteren. Soms lijkt het alsof ze ritme haten en klinkt het gewoon warrig. Wannabe Bjork 1.7
Tuneyards meets Neco. It was ok. 2.5 if there was a .5
frekar random plata, ekkert sérstaklega hrifinn af henni
This sounds so painfully 2009 with too much going on.
First time I heard them. An OK album.
Fav: Two Doves Least Fav: The Bride Wtf was this, complete nonsense that every now and then had some cool parts that I could appreciate
ned s ganze glost, has ned so gfühlt
Not for me
Some goods songs, Not for me personally
That was okay, good sound tho
Shoutout NBA 2k13 for "Stillness is the Move" fine other than that 2.5
I didn't hate it.
Did not enjoy this. Something about all the songs was jarring and annoying. 2/5
Music made by people that think they are the reinvention of music. Too many pieces of pointless scarring. I went into this intrigued, I came out a bit dejected. Not nearly as good as they think they are.
I'm not really sure what this is, but whatever it is, it didn't do it for me. Bit too artsy. Not offensive though. I think it had bits and pieces I could enjoy, but it came with too much wanky hipster stuff 2
This isn't dissonance this is just bad singing.
Zuhause, Heidenheim, Deutschland. Zu weird & zu ungefährlich.
Eh, not my thing. This sounds like a band that wants to run in 4-5 different directions and couldn’t decide so they try to go in all directions at once…and not in a good way. I don’t get it
Forgetable
I've never heard of Dirty Projectors heading into this album. The beat in Temecula Surprise was a bit jarring as it felt like each instrument was playing at a different tempo. (To be honest, it actually felt like multiple tracks had this sound.) I favored the female featured vocal tracks compared to David's. I think it fit the genre a bit better. Can't see myself coming back to this though. (1.5/5) Favorites: - Stillness Is The Move
I had no idea who this band was, but this immediately brought me back to the era of early 2010s hipster-pop that I have a soft spot for. The male singer has a sound that reminds me a lot of Passion Pit, but I found myself more drawn to the songs led by the female vocalists. I can’t put my finger on it, but there’s something missing here that bands like Passion Pit or MGMT seem to do a bit better. Favorite tracks: - Stillness Is The Move - Two Doves
It was fine
Too hipster for my tastes.
Ok then. Not sure what this was trying to achieve or why it made so many ‘best of’ lists. Whatever it was, the experiment did not work on me. Flashes of niceness overwhelmed by the lack of cohesion or much of a discernible tune.. No Intention stood out for me. Don’t know why

01) Cannibal Resource - 6,0 02) Temecula Sunrise - 5,0 03) The Bride - 5,0 04) Stillness Is the Move - 5,5 05) Two Doves - 6,5 06) Useful Chamber - 5,5 07) No Intention - 5,5 08) Remade Horizon - 5,5 09) Fluorescent Half Dome - 5,5 TOTAL: 5,56 (56/100) Current ranking: 509/596
The entire time, I was thinking: "what am I supposed to do with this information?" Right from the first track, Cannibal Resource, we hear contrasting elements of several eras of music. The brash, complex timbre of late-70s-esque drumming, guitar tones from a bygone era, both messy and clean vocal harmonies (representing new and old, respectively)... and a melody that's extremely difficult to follow on a first listen. This last aspect is a common theme throughout the album. Temecula Sunrise gets even tougher to follow, introducing what I can only assume are polyrhythms to the mix. And nonsensical guitar solos. Every melody is in conflict with its chord, and at the same time every chord sounds just a bit wrong. The Dirty Projectors pick and choose musical elements seemingly at random – like suddenly introducing a doubled electric guitar and bass line at the end of The Bride with a completely novel riff which is played exactly three times, then the song ends. Stillness Is The Move and Two Doves are the easiest songs to follow mentally. Probably why they have the most listens on Spotify. In both tracks, I enjoyed the vocals and strings competing to see which high-frequency texture could outperform the other. No Intention is also a fun track with a simple modern-rock texture and a great repeating guitar riff. But others, like The Bride and Fluorescent Half Dome, are unapproachable – at least during the first listen. A bit like Captain Beefheart (or what I imagine his stuff is like – still holding out on Trout Mask Replica until I get it on this list). Or maybe a Frank Zappa mimic who aged less elegantly. 2/5 Key tracks: Stillness Is The Move, No Intention
An unremarkable album, didn’t hate it but didn’t like it either. Perhaps an unappealing mash up of different genres enveloped with bad vocals. This is a high 2 for me.
Grand, sounds like 2009. A good rule of thumb with this list is that albums added after the original version was completed are extremely hit or miss. Whoever made this list had a hard time of pinpointing the contemporary albums that would have a lasting impact.
Not as bad as I thought it would be, but very up it’s own ass.
I liked the first track and then things went Chinua Achebe: they fell apart. Not a great listen, a lot of Tune-Yards type odd sound noises. A lot of songs just blended together.
Cannibal Resource...starting off weird. It's almost an anti-song? Like it's trying to avoid making sense Temecula Sunrise...sounds like the dumb shit I would come up with while noodling on guitar The Bride...what is happening?! Stillness is the Move...sort of resembles a pop song. I can groove to it Two Doves...hmm. I appreciate the attempt at a sincere acoustic ballad on an otherwise strange album but it's just not good. Useful Chamber...continues the weirdness. Not an enjoyable listen No Intention...an accessible and welcome reprieve from the rest of this insanity Remade Horizon...guh wtf is this? Sounds like a first draft with high production values Fluorescent Half Dome...not my thing. not my thing at all
It was interesting for sure. Most of the songs didn't really culminate the way I wanted but it was pretty satisfying when they did. Rating: 2.3
There are some genres you can get away with no melody, but indie rock is not one of them. Simpsons: No
This was just a dull indie rock album that didn't really do anything. I'm not sure why this has been placed on the list. Maybe the back end of the 2000s was short on albums, and this was one added to make up the numbers?
A very interesting album. While I do find some of the tracks to be cool and well produced, I feel like most of the tracks are just compiled sounds and random odds and ends. I wish I could say I liked this record more. Sorry…
I was not previously familiar with the artist or album. This is kind of a strange listen. It's indie with both male and female vocals, mostly acoustic guitars, and some tracks have strings as well. There's some strange syncopation and repetition on some tracks that's a bit off-putting. The tracks overall don't feel coherent as an album. Some interesting parts but not enough to come back. Would not listen again.
Não é meu tipo de música. Para meu gosto é muito chato. Ouvi o álbum todo e esse tipo de indie experimental não me pega mesmo. Tangzu Wan'er SG.

I half expected some guy to start screaming "HEY" in the middle of No Intention.
This really does nothing for me, and it's not even good enough to get a 3. Still not like... aggravating or anything, just not really anything. Almost interesting in a couple parts.
Did Dirty Projectors pay to be on this list or something? If you thought this album was boring but that they had some neat ideas, check out their song Break-Thru, it's great.
Thoroughly uninteresting album. I don't think a single song or even moment on this album hooked me aside from the pretty decent Useful Chamber, but also nothing was offensively bad enough to be memorable. Arguably, the worst kind of album.
Another entry in “why on earth was this included in the list?” Some good parts, some incredibly weird and annoying parts. Won’t be revisiting. Shoutout to whoever put “Stillness Is The Move” on the NBA 2K13 soundtrack though
The second half of this album was great. The first part of the album was like a "worst of Arcade Fire" compilation.
This is a little like walking into a modern art museum; it's interesting, but you're not sure you really get it. It makes you feel something, but mostly just uncomfortable with the fact that something is just "off" about it. This is a museum I will not be revisiting.
This didn't leave much of an impression for me. Sounded a bit folky vampire weekend. Very 00s
Idk about this one... I haven't listened to new music in a while and this one did not stick. A lot of the songs felt disjointed and others felt like a hodgepodge of random stuff. I really liked No Intention and that's about it, because it was steady, and had a catchy guitar part. Other than that, the first 3 songs were uneven rhythmically and I wasn't a huge fan of that. Useful Chamber just felt random, and by the end, the songs were kind of uninteresting. I like the idea of having the female singers, and they are good background singers, although it got repetitive throughout all of the songs. The lyrics are good though, that is a strong point on this album. Favorite Song: No Intention Least Favorite Song: Useful Chamber
A bit too twee and clunky for me, even though it actually pulls itself together a bit in the second half. Favorite song is “Stillness Is The Move”, specifically featuring the girl on the left of the album cover, Amber Coffman. I knew I recognized that voice from somewhere, shes featured on Rusko’s “Hold On” and Major Lazers “Get Free”. If you haven’t heard the latter, you should listen to it - one of the better, more meaningful, left-of-field songs to ever come from and edm group.
I still don't know what to make of Bitte Orca. I guess it's easy enough to listen to. It contains some experimental components that I'm not exactly wild about, and a fair descriptor to use is weird. I heard some Eastern-inspired sounds, which is always interesting. But my life is not enriched or better off after this album.
This was definitely eclectic and leaning more into heavy hipster territory of the indie genre. Not that there is anything wrong with that, inherently. That said, this just often felt experimental and noisy and wasn't completely to my liking. Oh well.
Indie background album
Really didn't get this album. It all kinda sounded the same and was just another indie pop album. 4/10
Very choppy n sloppy sounding. It sounds disorganized and as if ideas and rhythms were just slapped together without regard to how they fit in the song. Some interesting moments, but ultimately it’s a fatiguing listen.
I don’t like slow sad bisexual music
This was too indie for my tastes. I wanted to like it but ultimately found it aggravating to listen to.
Seemingly nonsensical lyrics with okish music
meh
At times I started to kinda like it but then the singer started to annoy me again. I was gonna give it a second d listen but decided against it. 2 stars
I really wanted to like this one. And some parts I did. But that was the problem- it was only in parts. I don't think there was one song I liked all the way through; some started good and went bad, some started rough and improved, and others oscillated between the two. Anything else was in the "OK" territory of neither good nor bad. To me, a lot of it felt disjointed. Like the guitar was playing one song and the percussion another, and they didn't really match up to make something cohesive. Or the vocals were in one space and the music was in another. It was like they had a ton of ideas for songs when writing the album, but instead of ditching the worst ones, they kept them all (and combined them) anyway. I'm guessing that's what they were going for, as it was definitely pervasive and was the sound of the album. If so, I'd say they accomplished their goal. I'll give them credit for that. I'll say I was underwhelmed, but not turned off. I appreciated it more than some of the super bland stuff that I've gotten on here, as they tried to do something different. It was definitely interesting. But still, I can't say it was good. Overall: 2.5/5
3/10 MARTHA!!! The raccoons are in the garage again playing the rock music. stop feeding them the butter!!! 5-13-2025
